Tumblr’s Core Prodct Stratgy
Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on trying to keep our sinking ship afloat for as long as possible. This means desperately trying to copy every new fly-by-night social media app that some multi-billionaire sh*t out during their daily Peloton routine. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. If you find the things we say here worrisome, please understand that is our exact intention. You've outgrown our target demographic. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
The Diagnosis
It's lookin' pretty bad y'all!
After somehow losing hundreds of thousands of users during the great pr0n purge of 2018, we started to wonder if anything could be done to get back to where we were. We even brought in a management consultant who charged us a ridiculous amount of money. It would make you sick if you knew how much, but we got a few nice meals out of it at least. Anyhow, we handed this guy the app, and HE HAD NO IDEA HOW TO USE IT! It was f*cking hilarious! But suddenly it all clicked -- our users are a bunch of stupid idiots who can't even do basic arithmetic. I mean, they spend all day looking at their phones, so what do you expect?
Tumblr’s best feature is its unique content and vibrant communities. But who cares, right? We're just as happy getting traffic from people sh*t-posting memes, vague-booking, giving out-of-context hot takes to news events, and spewing whatever random thought is in their head at the moment. Plus that stuff doesn't p*ss off Apple.
To keep this thing going we need new people. And by "people" we mean teenagers, like we used to have back in the good ol' days. Unfortunately we're all in our 40s now, so we have no idea what they want. But teenagers are so cool! Imagine if they talked to us like we're one of them? We're getting hard just thinking about it.
Our Guidng Principls
To make Tumblr cool again, we must address these huge glaring issues.
People can look at a blog without logging in. How is that fair to all the poor schlubs who had to fill out forms to get an account? Also we haven't figured out a way to force ads onto the personalized pages yet. But we swear that's not the main reason.
People can see content they are looking for or linked to. People can keep up with blogs they follow. But the problem with this is, people don't know what they want. We know what they want! We're smart. We wrote this damn site, remember?
Promote posts that incite pointless conversations. Posts that are guaranteed to bait every troll into responding. Isn't that why all your Magat relatives love Facebook so much? We can do that!
P*ss off your content creators in every way possible (see #2).
Create algorithms that throw an unending barrage of irrelevant content in your face. Have you seen Instagram lately? We could do that so easy!!!
The app is slow. The website is slow. Obviously this is because of GIFs. Facebook and Instagram don't allow them, so why should we?
Conclusion
Our mission changes on a day-to-day basis. Right now we're super jealous of all the attention that new Threads thing is getting. We're still not sure what it is, but we're gonna download it after work.

A few years ago, I noticed that a number of factories in China had started opening TikTok accounts and posting footage from their assembly lines. The videos offered a rare glimpse into global supply chains, and millions of Western TikTok users marveled at teddy bears being stuffed with polyester fiberfill, machines dipping gardening gloves into hot liquified nitrile rubber, and quality assurance testers seeing whether cheap cigarette lighters worked. (My friend and former colleague Andrew Deck wrote a great story about factory TikTok for Rest of World in 2021.)
Since then, hundreds of other Chinese factories have joined TikTok. Some of them produce industrial equipment that would never be bought by normal people, like dump trucks or bottle labeling machines. And while the older factory accounts were often created by marketing agencies, these newer ones seem to largely be the work of earnest salespeople trying to find new customers. Many of them are relying on AI translation and text-to-speech tools, making the videos unintentionally sound very funny.
One of these manufacturers is a company called Donghua Jinlong, which is headquartered in Hebei province about 200 miles from Beijing. It sells “high quality industrial grade glycine,” a type of nutritional additive that evidently sounds silly and abstract to people who never need to think about how processed food is made. Donghua Jinglong and its glycine have become a relatively big meme on TikTok, Instagram, and X over the last few days, and some of the company’s videos are getting over 100,000 views (even though its official account only has roughly 4,400 followers).
Donghua Jinlong itself, however, doesn’t seem to have any idea what’s going on. People in the comments keep begging it to make official merch, but the company doesn’t understand why anyone would want a sweatshirt or t-shirt with the name of an industrial manufacturer on it. Shitposters have also started referencing the Donghua Jinlong meme in the comments of videos from other Chinese factories.
A company called HengYuan, for example, posted a video of what can only be described as a machine for filling Tide Pods, and one of the top comments is someone asking “Could you pack food grade glycine in this?”
Clearly baffled, HengYuan responded, “No. This is used to pack detergent in PVA Film.”
The Donghua Jinlong meme is a great microcosm of what’s actually happening on TikTok when it comes to content from China. Some people might argue that Chinese manufacturers are choosing to post on the app because its parent company, ByteDance, is also from China. In other words, these factories could be held up as an example of TikTok allowing Chinese influence to grow in the US (albeit a bizarre one).
But Donghua Jinlong also has a Facebook page with even more followers, it’s just that no one is engaging with its posts there. That’s because there are likely very few people searching social media for a new glycine supplier at any given time. TikTok, however, doesn’t rely on users to actively seek out content, it serves videos to them via an algorithm. So now tons of random people are coming across glycine manufacturers and Tide Pod machines by accident, and they’re happily turning the whole thing into a joke.
I personally find these videos to be fascinating, both because It’s cool to learn how things are made, and because they provide the opportunity to watch in real time what happens when random Chinese companies come into contact with American social media users. I don’t think this is the type of Chinese influence lawmakers are imagining when they worry about TikTok, but it’s arguably much more interesting and human.

if the characters of the terror were like internet personalities (streamers, youtubers, podcasters etc) what do you think everyone would do and what would their viral moment be (for better or for worse)
oh that is an incredible question actually. let me think.
James "Walking Podcast" Fitzjames has it all of course. Instagram, youtube, personal website, ridiculously embellished linkedin, 2-3 podcasts, etc etc. Goes viral for various things, unfortunately mostly entitled shenanigans (Selfies cuddling the cheetah that hopped into your jeep aren't cool, James)
Goodsir, predictably, has a small professional twit or similar that he posts on occasionally. Goes viral for an enthusiastic 5am ramble reply to a shitpost.
Jopson moonlights with an ASMR account that politely and unapologetically straddles the line between niche subject and thinly veiled fetish content. "ASMR Personal attention: your valet helps you get dressed for the day"
Little has a rather anonymous internet presence. That's for the better, because he spends way too much time on rule34, furaffinity, and reddit.
Collins is a top notch gamer. Uploads walkthroughs and speedruns with commentary. The kind of guy who loses a 2 hour run to a frame perfect skip, simply goes "ah, yea that is hard to get", resets and keeps going.
Sol Tozer has a medium size twitch following. Goes viral for casually mentioning "brojobs" on stream, and again after people discover his personal hornyposting twit where he's been posting hole and pup play content
James Clark Ross has charismatic host energy. Idk what he does tho. Seems like the guy who would narrate speedruns on Games Done Quick, or do educational and creative projects. "We built a historically accurate tea clipper in my backyard" type videos.
Hodgson runs a cryptic music meme page. "Biblically accurate Tschaikovsky" type stuff. Goes viral for a Kunstlied based on loss.png
Irving's got a popular facebook page creating those graphic-design-is-my-passion type images boomers love to send on messenger apps. You know the ones. Noone knows how many of his followers are following the page ironically.
When Crozier is feeling grouchy he replies to questions on forums by linking a vaguely related question from 3 years ago and closing the thread.

Sticker Cutter Research
I was looking into getting a sticker cutting machine, and I decided to start by looking into cricut which is a well known brand. I had a look at what models they had than their feature etc, but what I was most concerned about was their software. Printer companies like to lock you into a defacto subscription to support hardware you don't really own, and as I was to discover, cricut are operating in a similar way.
The cricut software is online-only*. To cut your own designs you need to use their software to upload your art to their server. There's no way to cut a new design without a logged-in cricut account and an internet connection. At one point in 2021 they flirted with limiting free accounts to 20 uploads/month but backed down after huge community backlash, as far as I can tell.
The incident spawned several community efforts to write open-source firmware for cricut hardware. Some efforts were successful for specific models/serial numbers, but require cracking open the case and hooking in to the debug contacts to flash the chip; not exactly widely accessible. Another project sought to create a python cricut server you can run locally, and then divert the app's calls to the server to your local one.
I restarted my search, this time beginning with looking for extant open-source software for driving cutters, and found this project, which looks a little awkward to use, but functional. They list a bunch of cutter hardwares and whether they're compatible or not. Of those, I recognised the sihouette brand name from other artists talking about them.
I downloaded the silhouette software to try like I did w the cricut software, and immediately it was notable that it didn't try to connect to the internet at all. It's a bit clunky, in that way printer and scanner software tends to be, but I honestly greatly preferred using it to cricut's sluggish electron app⁺. Their software has a few paid tiers above the free one, adding stuff like sgv import/export/and reading cut settings from a barcode on the input material. They're one-off payments, and seem reasonable to me.
This is not so much a review, as sharing some of the research I've done. I haven't yet used either a cricut or a silhouette, and I haven't researched other brands either. But I wanted to talk about this research because to me, cricut's aggressively online nature is a red flag. Software that must connect to a server to run is software that runs only at the whim of the server owner (and only as long as it's profitable to keep the server up). And if that software is the only thing that will make your several hundred dollars worth of plastic and (cheap, according to a teardown I read) servos run, then you have no guarantee you'll be able to run it in the future.
Do you use a desktop cnc cutter? What has your experience been like with the hardware and software? Do you have any experience from home printers with good print quality and user-refillable ink cartridges?
* Cricut's app tried to connect to more than 14 different addresses, including facebook, youtube, google analytics, datadoghq.com, and launchdarkly.com. Launch Darkly are a service provider that help software companies do a whole bunch of things I'm coming to despise, for example, they offer infrastructure for serving different features to different demographics and comparing results to control groups. You know how at various times you've gotten wildly different numbers of ads than your friends on instagram? They were using techniques like this to work out how many ads they could show without affecting their pickup/engagement rates. Scummy stuff.
⁺ Electron apps are web-pages pretending to be applications. They use heaps of ram, tend to have very poor performance, and encourage frustrating UI design that doesn't follow OS conventions. Discord's app is a notable example of an Electron app

July Creator of the Month: Eadanga
Tumblr media
Please welcome this month’s Creator of the Month: @eadanga
Each month, CFWC highlights one of our talented fanfic writers or artists. The writer or artist is selected at random. More info can be found on the navigation page. Past COTM's can be found here.
Tumblr Blog Name: Eadanga How do you want to be known on Tumblr? Esang
Quick Links:
Tumblr Blog Masterlist
1- When did you start playing Choices? What was the first book you played?
I don't remember the year, but I started playing when it was only The Crown & The Flame, The Freshman, and Most Wanted. I thought it was a rip-off of Episode because many apps like that exist. The first book I started playing was The Crown & The Flame, and then I got bored of it, so I tried The Freshman, and I was hooked. Been playing ever since 😃
2- When and why did you join Choices fandom?
I joined about four years ago. I was in a Choices group on Facebook and saw people sharing fanfics. I first thought it was an ad, but when I looked, it was a fanfic, and it was amazing. That's when I joined so I could read more, and then I posted one of my own that I wrote.
3- How did you pick your blog name?
Literally, it's just my name. I didn't think I'd be here long, not to mention posting. It's the first letter of my name, Esang, and my last name, Adanga. Maybe one day I'll change it 🤣😂
4- Pull up the first post in your archive, and tell us about it!
This was my first post. I saw people making stories in the Choices group and decided to make one of my own. I didn't think it would get much attention, but it did 😁
5- Do you write fanfiction, create fan art, or are you one of those really gifted people who do both?
I write fanfiction, but I’m not really good at making art, lol
6- How long have you been creating for Choices and for any other fandoms?
Let's see, I think I started in 2020. Choices is the only fandom I write for.
7- What is your favorite Choices book, and what is your favorite Choices book to create for?
The Freshman and The Royal Romance will always be my number one favorite books to read and write for 😁
8- Share your first Choices fanfic or fan art that you posted with us. Do you still like it, or would you change it if you were creating it today?
This was my favorite, and I'll never change anything about it. It is so romantic, hehe 😍
9- What is your favorite piece of fiction or art that you created?
This one wrote it for @flowerpowell, and even though she doesn't post anymore, it was so much fun to write something for her.
10- Do you have a fic/art that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to do well but found it could use a little more love?
It's definitely my Deepest Desire series. I didn't expect people to enjoy it, especially @littlegreenmoo, who was having a field day with that series 🤣. Chris's Journal could have been better; a little bit more detail would have made it pop.
11- (WRITERS) If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?
I hate angst, and I haven't written smut since my Deepest Desire series 🤣 so fluff all the way. I love happy endings 😁
12 - Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MCs or in your writing?
I put some of me in my MCs, like when they're cooking, cause I love to cook 😁
13 - What element of writing/art do you struggle with most?
Keeping up with a schedule. I make one, but then real life gets in the way, and I gotta change it.
14 - Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?
Eternal Love, I haven't written for that in a long time. I just got caught up with other fanfics, and then you lose inspiration, but I will get back to it one day.
15 - If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to see your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you show them first?
Yes, I would love to show them, but I've shown my work without people asking. I've shown my best friend my work; she didn't ask. I just showed it to her, and she enjoyed it. I've shown my mom, too. She constantly told me to send it somewhere and get paid even though I only write for fun, not as a job. I stopped showing her after that because she was tired of hearing that.
16 - Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing or art? Are there any artists that influence you?
@maxattackpowell and @drivenbyfantasy are both no longer here, but their fanfics inspired mine. I’m grateful to both of them for that.
17- (WRITERS)  Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series?
The Graduate would make a great movie or Choices book, hehe.
18- Do you write original fiction or create non-fandom art?
Choices is my first fandom.
19-  What other hobbies do you have?
I love cooking and baking, watching anime (I'm a total anime nerd 🤣), spending time with my baby @choicesgodfanatic, reading Archie comics, watching cartoons, praise dancing, and writing episode stories.
20- BONUS - tell us anything you’d like (if you want to)
Thanks to everyone who enjoys all my stories, and don't ever worry about me leaving cause I'm here to stay. Choices is why I met my amazing love @choicesgodfanatic. It's part of our love story, and I'll never give up on it.
Plus, I've met some wonderful people here and never want to leave them. So glad you all enjoy my fanfics, and look out for many more cause more is coming your way 😁

Are We Dating the Same Guy? Tobias Edition
Tumblr media
There are Facebook groups called "Are We Dating the Same Guy?". They exist to "expose" cheaters and guys who are just creeps in general. Women will post a photo/profile and ask if anyone has any tea or red flag alerts. The other day I was scrolling through a local one and saw a friend of mine. Talk about a WHOA moment. A few days later, the "AWDSG? Boston" group was recommended to me, and my mind automatically went to... what if Tobias and/or Ethan were on this? I ran the idea past @lucy-268 and @genevievemd and asked if I should do it for Ethan or Tobias. Their answer was, "Both is good." So, in honor of them, I'm doing both. Here is Tobias's version.
Book:              Open Heart (Post Series)
Pairing:           Tobias Carrick x F!MC (Casey Carrick)
Rating:            Teen
Words: 1,428 plus edit
Summary: Casey & Tobias are both on parental leave following the birth of their first daughter. When Tobias steps out for an errand, Sienna notifies Casey that she found Tobias on "Are We Dating the Same Guy? Boston/Cambridge", and apparently, he has a Tinder account. Here's what happens when Tobias returns.
A/N: The story precedes the FB post of Tobias on the "AWDSG?" page. *** Participating in @choiceschallenge-may2023 | ex-crush/lover, bedroom, love. *** @creativepromptsforwriting - Cute Interactions - 23. putting their chin of the other's shoulder
Ethan Edition found here.

Parental leave was a good thing. That’s what Tobias was thinking as he rushed up the stairs to his daughter’s nursery. He was only gone for an hour, rushing out when they realized how low they were on diapers, but that was 60 minutes too long away from his wife and new baby as far as he was concerned. He couldn’t imagine being away from them longer than that.
Casey promptly shushed him when he stuck his head in the door. She had been trying to get little Samantha down for a nap since he left, and she had finally succeeded. Tobias tiptoed over and rested his head on his wife’s shoulder, they both lovingly gazed at their precious little creation fast asleep in her crib.
“You’re a natural,” he whispered into her ear.
“If I was a natural, this wouldn’t have taken a full hour,” Casey whispered back, motioning toward the door.
With the baby monitor in hand, the couple headed to their bedroom across the hall and collapsed into bed together. Their mothers had offered them sage advice… when the baby sleeps, you sleep. That’s how you survive the first few months. For the most part, they listened, but unbeknownst to Tobias, this wouldn’t be one of those times.
“I missed you,” he sleepily muttered. “I hate being away from my girls.”
“Mmmh,” Casey yawned. “Do you now?”
“Yep, I do.”
He expected her to snuggle closer like she normally did, but Casey sluggishly sat up and twisted in her husband’s direction. A smirk was on her lips, but he was too exhausted to determine if it was a playful or one of annoyance.
“You sure about that?” She yawned again. “I mean… I suppose you’ll need some time away from us if you’re going to meet up with the women you find on Tinder.”
He rolled his eyes with a chuckle and motioned for her to return to his side. “Yeah, sure, hon. That’s what I need.”
But Casey didn’t return. She took out her phone, opened an app, and flung it in his direction.
“Really, smartass? Then explain this?”
Tobias’s eyes popped open. It was the Tinder profile he had created nearly three years earlier in retaliation for Casey creating one of her own after they split.
“Case!” He exclaimed, suddenly wide awake. “This isn’t new, OK? This is the profile I created back when… I thought… I thought I had taken this down! You don’t seriously believe I’m on Tinder, do you?”
Casey bit her lower lip in an attempt to prevent her laughter. Was that actually sweat forming on his brow?
“I don’t know, Tobias? You tell me! Because apparently, you also have a little fan club on the Are We Dating the Same Guy’s Facebook page.”
“I’m sorry… on what?”
Casey defiantly folded her arms before her chest, pouting for effect. “Don’t act all innocent! Like you’ve never heard of it.”
“Casey!” He said far too loudly. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. And, oh my God, do you seriously think I’m out there looking for a side piece? Is that really what you think of me?”
“Sshhh!!!” She said, placing her hand over his mouth as her smile spread. It was going too far now; besides, she would not have him waking Sammy up. “Of course not!” She insisted, pushing him back against the pillows and laying on top of him. “You’re a smart man, and you know damn well you’d never find better than me.”
“Damn straight! But where the hell is this coming from? Are you trying to give me a heart attack so you and your younger lover can run off with my money?”
“YES! That’s it! You’re on to me!” she nuzzled her face in the crook of his neck to muffle her laughter. Still bewildered, Tobias turned her chin toward him in search of an explanation.
“Your Tinder profile is still up,” she said. “Buts so is mine, apparently. It looks like neither of us idiots took it down.”
“Yeah, well, this was right around the time of the attack. My focus was on you, and I didn’t give a shit about Tinder or much else back then.”
“Same with me. And since I had notifications turned off, I never even thought to take it down.”
Tobias took out his phone and opened his old Tinder account. He pulled up Casey’s profile and let out a long, slow whistle. “Look at her… you know, I’d love a piece of that.”
“Well, according to Dr. Garcia, you’ll have to wait another four or five weeks,” she smiled. “But we probably should take them both down.”
“Yeah, given that we’re married with a new baby… it’s a bad aesthetic,” he smirked.
Casey’s finger slid over her phone, about to click deactivate, when Tobias grabbed her hand.
“Wait!” He teased. “Before you do that, are you sure you don’t want to, you know, add a third here?”
She pulled his phone from his hand and pressed deactivate on both devices simultaneously. “You’re such an ass!”
“You love my ass!” He grinned, pulling her into a kiss.
“Always.”
“But wait, what was the other thing you mentioned… something about a fan club?”
“Oh, that’s how this all came to be! Sienna belongs to a Facebook group called ‘Are We Dating the Same Guy?’ Women in the Boston area go on it and post pictures if they think they’re dating a two-timer, or they’ll post a guy they want to meet on a dating app to ask if anyone has any info on them.”
“OK… and?”
“And,” she handed him her phone, “You’re on it!”
“I’m what?”
“Relax,” Casey laughed, “It dates back to 2019, so I don’t have to start divorce proceedings or anything. But someone was about to swipe right on Tinder, and they thought they’d consult the page first. Looks like a bevy of your conquests had a thing or two to say about you….”
The color drained from Tobias’s face.
“Lisa… Amanda… Celia… though she had nothing good to say. Even Audrey had something to add.”
“Audrey?! She knew about this and didn’t tell me!”
“Don’t worry. It looks like she had your back, babe. Though… I was right all along… she did want my title all along. At least she sees reason now!”
Tobias only half heard her, too busy reading all the comments. “What is Celia talking about? I never once led her on!”
“Mmm hmm, and Audrey backs that story. But Amanda and Lisa give you rave reviews, dear. Who knew you were Yelp! Certified 5 stars… and I do mean Yelp!” She giggled.
“I mean, it makes sense,” he boasted. “But you see here… it took you to get me off the market. You’re something special, Mrs. Carrick.”
“You better believe it, Mr. Carrick,” she grinned.
“What are you typing there?” he asked.
“I’m just adding my review,” Casey deadpanned.
“Casey, are you….”
“Relax! I’m just posting an off-the-market notice. You are all mine, buster! Well, mine and Sammy’s.”
“Damn right! And thank God you know that! This could have gone down a very ugly path, even though I didn’t know this existed.”
“I know,” Casey smiled, gently caressing his cheek. “But I know you, baby… and I trust you.”
“That means more to me than you’ll ever know. Now, how do we get this shit taken down?”
A notification popped up on Casey’s phone, “Looks like you’re in luck. The admin just read my comment and asked if she should remove it.”
“YES!” Tobias said, typing furiously. “Hey, do you mind if I thank the women for their… reviews… first?”
Casey shot him a look with a raised brow. “Just keep it brief… we probably only have an hour before Sammy is up again.”
“And what do you want to do with that hour?” He winked.
“In four or five weeks, I’ll have a different answer, but right now…”
“Please say sleep in my arms, please say sleep in my arms, please say sleep in my arms….”
“I was going to say sleep in your arms,” she laughed.
“Yes,” he cheered, pulling her beside him; he held her close and placed a kiss atop her head. “You see, you’re just perfect for me.”
He was waiting for a reply… smart alec or sweet… he knew one would follow, but it never did.
“Case? Casey?”
But her only reply was a soft, barely there snore.
“That’s OK, baby,” he chuckled, pulling the blanket over them. “You have the right idea!”

not to like, hop on the fuck tumblr train that’s been going around but choo choo motherfuckers i have an idea for a social media platform that will be completely feral. if you know coding (bc i do not) and you want to actually genuinely help with this let me know!! because i think i have something fun here.
at the beginning of the most recent wave of stupid updates that tumblr has so wonderfully (/s) supplied us, and when twitter became x, i realized that there’s kind of a gap in the market of a genuinely good social media platform and i was split between two options in my head.
Orbital, a “serious” social media platform that would have a lot of themes around space and take itself seriously as a genuine competitor for the virtual black hole that x and instagram and facebook has left over the last few years.
or Foolery, a less serious social media platform that would not take itself seriously and lean into the fuckery that is tumblr and twitter and somehow combine them, with themes around the circus and other performative careers.
can you guess which one i want to do?
(Foolery, it’s Foolery. i am obsessed with this stupid idea.)
so, i have put some thought into this. like, not a lot, but more than none! here is a few of the basics that i have thought about:
The sign-in/sign-up page would have a randomized slogan from a list of however many we come up with. ‘Welcome to the show’, ‘a place for tricks and treats’, ‘a place filled with shenanigans’ etc
Home Icon - a big top circus tent, where you would end up doom scrolling content. this would have two different modes, similar to tumblr, it would default to chronological, but you could also chose to participate in an algorithm.
Profile Icon - a clown nose, on desktop every time you click on it, it honks like a clown nose does. view your account here.
Creating a post would be called ‘Create an Act’ with different forms available—text, picture, video, poll, etc. the icon for this would be a quill.
Followers would be labeled as the Audience, which would be toggle-able, by default this is set to private, which means that only the owner of the account would be able to see the number, but can be turned public. There would also be an option to just list your Troupe, which would be your mutuals.
There are three admin accounts—Tom, Foolery, and Tomfoolery. Foolery is the publicity, Tom is the cryptid user that appears randomly to comment on peoples post, and Tomfoolery is updates, polling, feedback, etc.
Tickets are notifications as a whole—how many interactions with the post there are, whether that’s likes (peanuts), reposts (unnamed, maybe just reposts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯), comments, etc.
Peanuts are likes. It means you enjoyed the Act (post). maybe feeds the algorithm.?
Golden Tickets are similar to blaze—you can use a Golden Ticket to boost an Act, whether it’s your own or another person’s, so it shows up as a recommended Act for more people in the same fandom/side of Foolery.
now onto the even less thought out ideas, but things that have been on my mind:
I want there to be a tagging system similar to tumblr, but a filtering system similar to ao3? idk if that makes sense, but my basic thoughts are: +tags are used to add to a certain tag and can be searched using that tag. -tags are used to exclude that tag, and can be used to avoid the tag itself. (ex. a post tagged with ‘+steddie’ would be able to be searched using the tag, but a post tagged ‘-steddie’ would specifically be excluded from that tag, but still used as a kind of ‘content warning’ type thing, like ‘-tw blood’ or something similar)
Tragedy/Comedy masks? idk what for, but i think they’d be fun.
Jester Hat - used to signify ‘official’ accounts? i doubt companies or celebrities would use Foolery because obviously but like. just in case, we can publicly shame them for using the literal clown app.
porn. nudity. whatever. nsfw SAFE babes. all your porn is welcome.
anti-ai sorry not really lol
and that’s all the thinking i’ve done about it. but like. i think it would be fun to create, i just don’t have the knowledge nor the resources to actually create a website or app. and if you couldn’t tell, it’s definitely slightly inspired by tumblr minus all of the bs that it’s doing lmao.
so. dm me ig? if you wanna do anything with this? i warn you now: idk what i am doing. i don’t have a discord set up or anything. and! nothing will probably come out of this. however!! it might be a fun project to fuck around with. my roommate is trying to learn coding and one of my closest online friends is in college for it, but i know nothing about it whatsoever and i think that we three people cannot do this alone.

Tumblr media
MERROCK TASK #20
SOCIAL MEDIA
at what age did your character start using social media?
sometime in middle school, so 12 or 13
did their parents monitor their use, if they were young?
they certainly tried. there were parental controls on the family desktop but there were also ways to get around it without them knowing. but it wasn’t for lack of trying!
has your character ever had fake identities or accounts online?
wasn’t everyone in AOL chat rooms pretending to be 18 at 13? she also absolutely has a burner she uses for FBI activities
no shame: do they remember myspace? did they use it?
she lived on MySpace! the dramaaaaaa! high school would not have been the same without it.
who would be in their top eight today?
Stelly, Livvy, Mandy, Jamie, Nari, her sister, and her closest cousins
what social media platforms do they use today?
Instagram and TikTok mostly, Tumblr sometimes, the salon technically has a Facebook page but it’s only updated as needed for important info
do they have public profiles, or go private?
everything in her name is public, nothing to hide here
how about their following? are they pretty lowkey, or do they have a decent following?
she has a decent following due to the salon and roxie each having their own pages but nothing crazy
do they tend to pick obvious usernames, ones with sentimental value, funny things? how do they decide?
when she was younger, her usernames were out there and creative. these days most are simple and a variation of her name. something along the lines of “xsylcuenco” or “sylviacb”
profile pictures: the same across all platforms?
Nope. Every app has a vibe, your profile photo should match the vibe
and just what profile pictures do they use?
selfies and they are updated often for her pages, the salon page has the salon logo
what kind of bio writer are they? silly, cute, sweet, or just basic?
depends on the season of life, she changes her bios often, sometimes it’s even just emojis
how much time per day would you say that your character spends on social media?
too much. she scrolls first thing in the morning and last thing at night, plus her job requires advertising on socials sooo… a lot. between clients, she’s usually scrolling.
is there one platform that they visit more than others?
TikTok, hands down
if they have kids, do they use social media? how do they feel about that? if not, and they want kids, will they let them use it someday?
Roxie has an Instagram, does that count? that’s the closest to a child she’ll ever have so it’s not a huge concern for her, personally
be honest: have they ever created an account for something else, like a hobby, or... to try to make their cat internet famous?
both the salon and Roxie’s pages started out for fun so you can say so
do they run any professional or business accounts?
the salon has both an Instagram and TikTok
have they ever left a social media platform (or more than one) for any specific reason?
she used to be on Twitter a lot more, these days it’s more broken than anything so she rarely checks it
do they plan on using social media into their older ages?
she can’t function without it so she doesn’t see that changing
have they ever made any long-lasting friendships through social media?
yes, she’s been deep on social media long enough not to have. some of those friendships have even made it to real life.
or on the flip side, gotten into any big social media beef?
see high school MySpace drama.
have they ever felt negatively impacted by social media as a user?
Sylvia’s reputation probably wouldn’t have suffered as much as it did the way that social media allowed for gossip to spread but in her mid-20s, all of that became irrelevant so looking back, it just toughened her up
who is their favorite person / account to follow on social media?
she follows lots of celebrities and influencers, it’s tough to pick just one
would they say that social media has had an overall more positive or negative impact on the world?
these days, it is positive. social media has allowed her to build her client base and therefore her business much quicker than it would have otherwise
and finally: a/s/l? (and do they know what that means?)
32/F/ME - duh!

I know it really depends on my location and all that, but do you have any advice on how I could meet older lgbt people? I feel like it’s really important for us in the younger generations to connect with the older generations and learn about our history, but I just don’t know how.
It can be different depending on the size of your city/town and somewhat regional.
Start with local non profits. Pride Fests, PFLAG, LGBT+ youth gropus that may need volunteers etc. Get involved. These groups can teach you valuable life skills, pass on local history and LGBT history that is factual and first hand. You can gain job referrals, contacts and resources that can help you with everything from employment to housing in your life.
If there is a library in your town ask about LGBT (or be specitific as in Lesbian or gay etc) book clubs. Most librarians, even small towns get grants to help community members form groups and are happy to help organize and advertise one. Host an intergeneration lesbian (or whatever you are ;) ) book club. Pick a non fiction book from before you were born and after. Gather to discuss, maybe even watch the companion movie if one exists. Make it about a story and not political readings to keep it light.
Facebook. I know, it is for old people, but you won't find many of us on Tumblr or Discord. Instagram and Tiktok are getting better with older members of the LGBT+ joining and learning to navigate but they aren't regional. Check for a local FB page. We have a Lesbians of Iowa and Queer Women of Iowa page here. You might have a state or city page. Try the MeetUp app. There are broader Facebook pages for all or some of the letters of the acronym as well. Like Rural LGBT pages and LGBT Teachers etc.
I was taught by my elder lesbians friends that if you can't find what you are looking for create the space. It can be as simple as meet up at the breakfast place. If you can get the idea to one older lesbian and ask her to share, you are on the way.
Women's festivals are amazing placed to make intergenerational connections. It has always been encouraged to make random friends at them but in the past few years there has been an active push with workshops and appointed gathering times to get women of various generations together to talk and make friends.
I hope some of this helps. Don't get discouraged. There are lots of us older people happy to invite younger people to our established friend groups.

The Infinite Advert
It is a Wednesday night, the time of year is irrelevant because tonight I am doing what I do most nights. I'm on the couch or in my bed, my left hand of its own volition strokes at my facial hair. It plucks any that feels out of place. How it determines which to preen and which to spare is beyond me. The operation is mechanical, exacting and precise. While the left works the right entertains. It holds my cell phone, my fingers, even when empty, rest in the shape of it. Four fingers wrapped around the back while the thumb floats, ready to scroll. My right hand shows me the world. Ads for SUVS, photos of old friends starting families, dogs, cats, houseplants. I scroll and scroll through waves of injustice and mental health advice, absorbing information, commenting silently on what people choose to share. Every so often I get the desire to submit pieces of my own life if only in an effort to prove that I exist outside of this cycle. More often than not I come to my senses deleting the photo or witty tweet I'd spent the last half hour concocting. I stalk my exes which unearths memories buried for the sake of my ego. Masochism offers novelty, though there are only so many scabs to pick. To clear my head I turn my attention toward hookups and one night stands in search of photos that might fill in the gaps and remind me of what their bodies felt like. With a buzz my phone informs me that UberEats is offering $20 off on Popeye's Fried Chicken— for a moment my scrolling stops as the serotonin of receiving a notification slips through my fingers. I mourn the loss briefly and then before regular brain function can resume I continue my journey. With deft flicks I alternate apps; Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, Instagram, Discord, Twitter, Tiktok… when I've opened Facebook it occurs to me that I've become desperate. Somewhere between missed birthdays, Bible verses and conspiracy theories I begin to think that maybe I'm lonely and that a partner might save me from the void or at the very least distract me for a bit. I open Tinder, Bumble, Hinge and the swiping begins again. I examine the profiles of women in my area and judge them based upon how they choose to present themselves. Bad angles, blurry photos, hiding amongst crowds all rejectable offenses. Buzz words like BLM and Adventure cause me to sneer. The matches I am able to make I rarely engage with, though I peruse their profiles and imagine how our interactions might play out if I weren't just using them for validation. I feel guilty about none of this as I assume they are doing the same as I am across town. Eventually I tire of possibility and go in search of porn. I scroll through page after page of thumbnails hunting for the right video. The options are endless and so rather than masturbate as I intended I create reasons not to; bad quality, unappetizing position choices, too rough, too soft, over produced, racist, constant talking, forced moaning, and on and on until I'm no longer aroused. This is when the guilt comes and before I know it my left hand has a new job. It doesn't take long, a minute or so, the orgasm is barely noticeable, but the new wave of guilt that follows is heavy. It is enough to shake me from my daze and I am suddenly aware of the time, hours have passed, lost to the algorithm, my precious minutes converted into data to be sold. My phone buzzes in my hand and I waste no time checking to see who might be reaching out to me. The notification reads: Your average screen time has increased by two hours this week and I open up Twitter to begin the cycle again.

This Goncharov debate is only circling back to the two issues your marvelous blog has put into question all year long. (years?)
One, we are facing a new generation of people that have no idea how to use the internet. If people google search for the movie, and the first result is the Wikipedia page for it, and they settle for that information alone, then obviously they don't know how to look for other sources of information that is not the already digested ones by either social media or Wikipedia. The second is known for being the target of trolls constantly messing with the entries every time some meme is blown out of proportion.
But I don't buy this explanation from some other anons. People are always championing for wokeness but get blinded by their wish of making everything safe because I just google it, and several results mention how all this is a big Tumblr joke. Come on kids, if you can get easily gaslighted by the internet, then this obviously means the people you defend or yourself, maybe need to learn how to navigate this. This has to do with fake news and that stuff, but I thought that only happened to my 68-year-old mum because her only source is Facebook. There are several articles already about how this is “reality internet/unreality/meme”.
Second. Mental illness. I don't mean to victim blame anyone, I suffer from mental illness too, bipolarity, OCD, and clinical depression. I have my bad days. But I am aware of my issues, and that's why I have to be self-aware and not engage with everything that makes me hurt. Once again we need to understand that the only safe space, is the one you create for yourself. The internet is not supposed to be monitored or censured, people can try to control it, but honestly, that would only kill the internet, they already are containing people with algorithms and fake news as it is. To use another meme. “You can't handle the truth”. But others do.
Now, some people are not self-aware of their mental illness, but why do we need to turn it into a responsibility for everyone?. This is the same issue as kids on the internet, I don't have kids, so why should I care about some random kid wandering unsupervised by his parents into the space I have created for myself?. If I had a kid, I certainly would NEVER give them free access to the internet, and when ready, I would teach them at least, how to use it. This is the same issue with people with severe mental illness. It's the responsibility of their families (not their friends either, being in charge of the health of a friend would turn into caregivers burnout).
I might sound extreme, but this is similar to giving a mentally ill person a Gun. People are saying that those kinds of individuals “loss their grip of reality” because of a meme, and in turn, this makes them self harm?, suicidal?....this is the same then as giving them something as dangerous as a weapon. Only people think there's nothing wrong, and it's harmless to have an internet connection.
But if it was, then we wouldn't be speaking about people getting hurt by a joke. But as with guns, those are tools too, it's not problem of the tool, but who is allowed to use one/carry one. People need to stop babying others on the internet, it's no one's duty to make it safe. It took me less than five posts down in my main to see people fighting about Goncharov’s plot differences to make me realize it was a meme.
Do you know what actually needs unreality tags?. Everything and everyone on Tiktok, like put a tag on the App. In fact, I constantly need reality checks every time I enter Instagram and I see an incredible hegemonical beauty on vacation on some paradise island. Influencers should tag themselves as unreality because they induce in me an existential crisis with their dreamlike perfect -from outside capitalist lives. Maybe the real problem is social media….Nah, lets blame the creative artsy game of those dorks instead…right?...
