Little Men Part 2: Girls at Plumfield

I like Jo much better this time! She’s grown!

I’ve expressed before my annoyance at Jo for being mean and making fun of feminine girls, the Calls chapter etc. Also, adaptations don’t help. To me they portray her as annoying and mean, and I just want to slap her.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Jo respecting Daisy’s domesticity and even finding it valuable. So much that she was convinced that Daisy’s influence would do good on Nan, seeing as Nan is following her early steps.

I loved that when the boys didn’t let Daisy play with them, she built her a kitchen!!!! (with Laurie’s help). And when the boys didn’t let Nan into their club, she created the Cosy Club. And also how even when the boys where mean, the girls were generous and invited them to their spaces if they behaved well.

But she also wants the boys to learn to play with girls and be respectful to them. She does not approve of Demi, Tom and Nat ruining Daisy’s ball. It’s not funny.

Daisy (I guess I should warn you for spoilers??)

Daisy is a tiny Meg. She’s super sweet and domestic and just lovely. I often felt that she must be lonely being the only girl. Thank God Nan came! But seriously, her presence is so refreshing. In a school full of boys, Daisy’s garden has only flowers, she has a kitchen to play with, she cares for her dolls’ dresses.

She’s also very brave and loyal. When everyone suspected of Nat, she was the only one who defended him, she consoled him and adored his music. She also loves Demi. I understand why Louisa focused on Demi when John died, but I would have wanted to read more about Daisy’s grief.

Nan

Nan is a tiny Jo. She’s wild and energetic and Jo can recognize herself in the girl. Luckily Jo has matured and learn to respect limits and she tries to educate Nan in the same way. She’s such a contrast to Daisy. And they both help each other to not go too far.

I loved how brave she was for Rob when they got lost.

This is one of my favorite scenes:

“Yes; but I[Jo] keep talking, and lately she [Nan] has improved much. You saw how prettily she shook hands with you [Laurie], and how gentle she was with Bess. Daisy's example has its effect upon her, and I'm quite sure that a few months will work wonders.”

Here Mrs. Jo's remarks were cut short by the appearance of Nan tearing round the corner at a break-neck pace, driving a mettlesome team of four boys, and followed by Daisy trundling Bess in a wheelbarrow. Hat off, hair flying, whip cracking, and barrow bumping, up they came in a cloud of dust, looking as wild a set of little hoydens as one would wish to see.

“So, these are the model children, are they? It's lucky I didn't bring Mrs. Curtis out to see your school for the cultivation of morals and manners; she would never have recovered from the shock of this spectacle”, said Mr. Laurie, laughing at Mrs. Jo's premature rejoicing over Nan's improvement.

She’s learning limits but that doesn’t mean she loses her personality. It’s a bit worrying how willing she is to cut limbs, but I think it’s amazing that she wants to be a doctor. Like I said before, I appreciate that when she showed interest in healing and taking care of people, Jo automatically went for doctor, not nurse.

I thank Louisa for portraying a healthy female friendship between girls who couldn’t be more different.

Positive Female Relationships: While I love a good cat-fight as much as the next hoyden, celebrating The Sisterhood of positive female relationships is near and dear to my heart.  Be it close friendships, actual sisters, or unlikely allies, nothing makes me happier than women supporting other women 😊

Grey Heroes & Villains: I love nothing more than complicated characters who are more than their allotted role in a story.  Give me heroes that have real flaws (not ‘she cared too much’ tyvm), and villains who are more than the trait ‘likes to hurt people’ or ‘twirls moustache while cackling’.

Humour & Irreverence: While I am capable of taking things seriously, I just think everything is more fun (and palatable) when it’s at least a little bit funny, or doesn’t take itself too seriously.  Both as a tool to lighten a reader’s emotional load, and to make people smile, it’s just not something I could ever do without.

Unappealing Sex/Romance: Most usually sex and romance are written to be appealing to our hearts (or other parts of our anatomy), but I love having these things be a part of a story in a way that isn’t meant to be satisfying, or a turn on. While usually unappealing sex/romance equates to violence, I like to explore other ways it can make a person laugh or cringe by venturing into societal taboos, capitalizing on awkward encounters, or giving characters space to express themselves in non-traditional ways 😈

Female Protagonists: We do all love our excess of boy heroes, but I don’t seem capable of formulating a story in my head without the main characters being mostly (if not all) women.  Ladies of different shapes, sizes, backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, ideas, personalities, and orientations.  I’m especially fond of a clever, tenacious gal who doesn’t need a man to rescue her or hold her hand!

( medalion rahimi / cis woman ) ZADIE JABBARI is 22 years old and is a JUNIOR at thales university. SHE is majoring in CREATIVE WRITING and is known for being THE HOYDEN as SHE can be OUTGOING and ADVENTUROUS as well as FLAKY and EXCESSIVE. every time i see HER, SHE reminds me of ENTERING A PARTY WITH GLITTERY STAR PASTIES UNDERNEATH AN OVERSIZED FAUX FUR COAT, SKIN LITTERED WITH STICK AND POKE TATTOOS, A LAUGH REMINISCENT OF A WITCH’S CACKLE. 

Background:

adopted at birth by her two fathers, Iman and David, who lived in New York, New York.  She has two older brothers: Zander and Jaspar.

The family was well of with Iman being a pharmacist and David being an interior designer. David frequently encouraged the kids to spread their creativity into their spaces, so his encouragement paired with his constant desire to renovate meant that there was almost always a room that was in the middle of being remodeled, refurnished, or repainted.

Growing up, Zadie was a spitfire. She would roughhouse with her brothers, unafraid to tackle them or challenge them athletically. She was a tomboy and found it difficult to relate to most girls her age. It wasn’t that she didn’t like girls, it was more that other girls didn’t like her. She was boisterous and borderline obnoxious at times, bold in a way that many of her potential friends found intolerable.

It wasn’t until sophomore year of high school that she began playing with her femininity, experimenting with makeup and her style. She often still wore her baggy shirts and mom jeans, but she would also pop on some heels and a bodycon dress for a party. To this day, her daytime and nighttime styles look like entirely different types of people.

She thrived on the attention she received, thrived on attention, in general. She had a way of commanding the attention of a room, making it where it was near impossible not to notice she was there. She loved entertaining, capturing the attention of a circle while she recounted the details of a bad hookup or rattled off jokes.

When she applied for Thales, her family thought it was an odd choice. But frankly, Zadie was ready to explore the world even if this exploration started by just moving to another state. She wanted to get away, start from scratch, and find herself.

She found refuge in roller derby, just fast paced enough to keep her interested and as a bonus, she befriended many of the players. She’s a blocker.

When she turned 21, she started participating at open mic night at a local comedy club. It was a high. Nothing made her feel more alive than the roar of a laughing crowd. She’s constantly jotting down jokes or antidotes to work into a routine.

Bought a stick and poke tattoo kit and went wild. She’s covered in tiny tattoos that she does when she’s bored or that she gets someone else to do. She’s always trying to convince people to let her give them one.

She… doesn’t have a clear idea of her future. She thinks she might want to do stand up or write for a show like SNL or even become a reality tv star. She knows the end goal (gain an audience), but she’s not 100% on the vehicle to get there.

Connection to Nana: She was party friends with and a bad influence on Nana. She encouraged that they frequent parties and that Nana trade off studying for whatever activity caught Zadie’s attention that moment. Part of her was jealous at how planned out Nana’s life was and how magnetic she was, but part of her also had a crush on her. Nana was her Heather, basically.

Connection to Steven:  She was one of Steven’s secret affairs. She never had any interest in anything more with him. She was more enticed by the idea of corrupting someone so pristine. Making the lawful good Steven fold on his morals? Hilarious.

Loud, sociable, and bold. She’s the first to try to make an introvert come out of their shell, but also the type to pour beer on her shirt and request a wet t-shirt contest.

Kind of a jealous person when someone has something she wants e.g. Nana. She occasionally lets it get in the way of friendships and can sometimes engage in subtle sabotage.
