VEEN|HUIS|HOTEL 'Stable Shack,'
Veenhuizen, Drenthe, The Nertherlands,
There’s plenty of history associated with the site, which, in the 1800s, became a penal housing colony for vagrants who were set to work on the surrounding farmland. Veenhuizen is now home to several natural sites of interest and a community of farmers exploring more restorative forms of agriculture.
Overtreders W specialises in temporary and recyclable architecture and took a strict approach to materials for Stable Shack, which occupies a peaceful spot in the middle of a peat meadow. Everything is sourced from the immediate area, with absolutely ‘no flashy new components’ added into the mix.
It lends the Shack a distinctive, piecemeal appearance, with wood borrowed from a local carpenter and roof tiles sourced from a nearby farmyard – tied together using fabric straps and balanced on a concrete base.

Floor Plans - first sketches and tests to discover how the plateau may be used for the exhibition; the first one does enclose a lot a space which may not need to include closed spaces; while the second one (after discussion with my tutor) brings an option which does not entirely enclose a space yet does separate the three scientists

(New York) – The Chinese government is significantly reducing the number of mosques in Ningxia and Gansu provinces under its “mosque consolidation” policy, in violation of the right to freedom of religion, Human Rights Watch said today.
Chinese authorities have decommissioned, closed down, demolished, and converted mosques for secular use as part of the government’s efforts to restrict the practice of Islam. The authorities have removed Islamic architectural features, such as domes and minarets, from many other mosques.
“The Chinese government is not ‘consolidating’ mosques as it claims, but closing many down in violation of religious freedom,” said Maya Wang, acting China director at Human Rights Watch. “The Chinese government’s closure, destruction, and repurposing of mosques is part of a systematic effort to curb the practice of Islam in China.”
Chinese law allows people to practice only in officially approved places of worship of officially approved religions, and authorities retain strict control over houses of worship. Since 2016, when President Xi Jinping called for the “Sinicization” of religions, which aims to ensure that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is the arbiter of people’s spiritual life, state control over religion has strengthened.
“Mosque consolidation”[1] is referenced in an April 2018 central CCP document that outlines a multi-pronged national strategy to “Sinicize” Islam, or make it more Chinese.[2] It instructs the CCP and state agencies throughout the country to “strengthen the standardized management of the construction, renovation and expansion of Islamic religious venues.” The document notes that a central principle behind such “management” is that “there should not be newly built Islamic venues,” in order to “compress the overall number [of mosques].” While there can be exceptions, the document states that “there should be more [mosque] demolitions than constructions.”
Ma Ju, a US-based Hui Muslim activist who has been in contact with Hui in China affected by the policy, told Human Rights Watch that it is part of efforts to “transform” (转化) devout Muslims in order to redirect their loyalty toward the CCP: “Government officials first approach those Communist Party members who are also Hui Muslims … then they move onto ‘persuading’ students and governmental workers, who are threatened with school probation and unemployment if they continue with their faith.”
Available government documents suggest that the Chinese government has been “consolidating” mosques in Ningxia and Gansu provinces, which have the highest Muslim populations in China after Xinjiang.[3] Since 2017, Chinese authorities in Xinjiang have damaged or destroyed two-thirds of the region’s mosques, according to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI). About half have been demolished outright.
In Ningxia, Human Rights Watch has verified and analyzed videos and pictures posted online by Hui Muslims and used satellite imagery to corroborate them in order to examine the policy’s implementation in two villages. Of these villages’ seven mosques, four had significant destruction: three main buildings had been razed and the ablution hall of one was damaged inside. The authorities have removed the domes and minarets of all seven mosques.
Human Rights Watch is unable to determine the number of mosques shuttered or repurposed throughout Ningxia and Gansu, as official documents do not give precise details. In a forthcoming research report, two scholars on Hui Muslims, Hannah Theaker and David Stroup, have estimated that one-third of mosques in Ningxia have been closed since 2020.[4] A March 2021 Radio Free Asia report estimated that between 400 and 500 mosques faced closure in Ningxia, which had 4,203 mosques as of 2014.
The Chinese government claims that the mosque consolidation policy aims to “reduce the economic burden” on Muslims, especially those who live in impoverished and rural areas.[5] Actions against mosques often take place as the Chinese government relocates villagers from these areas, consolidating several villages into one.[6] The government also claims that as different Islamic denominations share the same venues, they learn to become more “unified” and “harmonious.”
Some Hui Muslims have publicly opposed the policy, despite government censorship. In January 2021, Ningxia officials indicted five Hui for “creating disturbances” after they led 20 people to oppose the policy at the village Party chief’s office. People have also protested mosque closures and demolitions, as well as the removal of domes and minarets in Ningxia, Gansu and other Hui Muslim regions, such as Qinghai and Yunnan.[7]
Ma Ju told Human Rights Watch that mosque consolidation aims to dissuade people from going to pray at mosques: “After removing the minarets and domes, local governments would start removing things that are essential to religious activities such as ablution halls and preacher’s podiums.”
Ma Ju said the government has sought to discourage religious practice: “When people stop going, they [the authorities] would then use that as an excuse to close the mosques.” He said that the authorities install surveillance systems in the remaining “Sinicized” mosques: “After the mosques are converted, the local governments strictly monitor attendance at the remaining mosques,” he said. “In the beginning, they would check the attendees’ national identification cards. Then they install surveillance cameras … to flag [those prohibited from mosques, including] Communist Party members or children.”
Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides that “[e]veryone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.” One has the right to manifest their “religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.” The Chinese government should reverse its Sinicization campaign on religions, review and repeal laws and regulations that restrict the right to freedom of religion, and release those detained for peaceful criticism or protest against such restrictive policies.
Foreign governments, particularly member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), should press the Chinese government to cease their mosque consolidation policy and the broader Sinicization campaign.
“The Chinese government’s policies of Sinicization show a blanket disregard for freedom of religion not only of all Muslims in China, but all religious communities in the country,” Wang said. “Governments concerned about religious freedom should raise these issues directly with the Chinese government and at the United Nations and other international forums.”

This doesn’t come up as much in later seasons but I suspect the Hephaestus’s shifting architecture, objects moving around, and the feeling that there’s more people on board comes from the aliens fucking with time so I’m convinced at least once Minkowski opened the door to the observation deck, saw Hui and Fourier there, shut the door, counted to ten, and opened it again to see an empty room and just never brought it up because she thought she was losing it.

If you do white, IMO, a deep blue is the perfect contrast. Love that the TV isn’t hung over the fireplace! It has its own space.
Tumblr media
Guest powder room in the hall has a lovely feature wall that you’ll see replicated throughout the house. Notice the vintage design of the hall tile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The family room has a modern fireplace with built-in shelving and a huge glass wall that opens to the garden.

Pretty dining room still has the original corner fireplace mantle. Modern lighting coordinates in each room and some still have the original ceiling medallions.
Tumblr media
This is cool- burners in a straight line. No reaching over hot pots and pans.

The large kitchen opens to the patio. (I need those cherries.) Notice the appliances hidden in the islands for a sleek look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s a great back entrance with a mud room, drop zone, and coat closet.

The home is on several levels, which makes it interesting. Love that lamp.
Tumblr media
Love the levels. Here’s a nice desk area.
Tumblr media
The delicate originally railing.
Tumblr media
This is so pretty and bright. Love the plants.
Tumblr media
Personally, this makes me feel at home, b/c this is how I make the bed- a little lumpy, comforter thrown over the pillows.
Tumblr media
Love the lighting fixture and beams. Notice the walk-in closet and the desk area.
Tumblr media
Bright en-suite. Notice the feature wall.

The 19th century is basically a shoujo drama and Kiku is the protagonist: Prussia and Japan have a very close linked history together, so much so that Japan adapted the German Civil law system into it's legal system. European, especially French painters adored Japanese art styles and adapted them in their own paintings to create the Japanonism art movement. Kiku basically could pick an choose.
Agreed! He's got the whole world in his pocket! And Kiku sampled. Monogamy, in my opinion, isn't how nations function in general. Kiku has deep ties and emotional attachments to a lot of countries. I just really like romantic relationships where I'm mostly looking at respect and mutual benefit with these eldritch dirt fucks and the Dutch fill that need lmao. Fuckng bastards.
The Dutch are shockingly loyal, and this cultural trust seems to have built up even after the end of Sakoku. Linguistically, Japanese dictionaries preferred Dutch over English loan words right up until post-WW2. In Nagasaki, the Dutch are seen constantly in the architecture and food culture. It's fascinating how we've discovered an English linguistic bias in sources. When we compensate for this, history decentralizes Britain and America for us and reveals a Japan whose ties, especially to the west, are much more complicated than the Anglosphere. Even after taking several courses on Japanese history over my university years, I found so much about Korea, Japan, Germany, Italy, France, Taiwan, Australia, etc. But the Dutch stands out to me. Physically Kiku's land is more formed by Dutch work than American or British. Water management, harbours, bridges, canals, drainage, agriculture reforms, erosion management. And these things started centuries ago and are still going.
And the art! Ah! The French and Japonisme... some art that makes me highly uncomfortable. La Japonaise is some of the least egregious but holy mother of orientalism. Monet's bridges are much more respectful. Van Gogh's works are primarily in that category. Starry Night was directly inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Upon the birth of his nephew in the Spring of 1890, Van Gogh painted his famous Almond Blossoms, also inspired by Japanese nature prints. For Jan who would have grown up a medieval Christian, those almond blossoms would have as much significance as the sakura in Japan and I really do think there's at least a copy of it above their bed at some point. The first Dutch ship that crashlanded in Japan did so in April 1600. The entire relationship is 400 years of everything spring comes with
The Dutch gave Japan its first modern ship, the Kankō Maru. The Dutch Monarch and diplomatic corps write love letters, make super emotional speeches, and show affection for Japan in their official statements. Kiku might be slightly more reticent in his public affection, but I don't think it's any less profound. He built an entire replica of a Dutch city that is the largest in the country. Huis Ten Bosch is literally larger than Tokyo Disneyland. Idk, man; there's just a lot here that makes me emotional. Like, look at this piece from the poetry Basho, as translated by Jane Reichhold.
kapitan mo tsukubawase keri kimi go haru
even the captain bows down before the lord of spring

Please let us know if you are interested. We have reserved _ tickets for your firm.
We hope to hear from you soon!
------
DK was supposed to go to Natasha's office to congratulate her as the four of them, Natasha, DK, Mingyu and Minghao received the said e-mail. However, he received an e-mail from Natasha. It seems like she forgot to remove her friends in cc.
It states: "Thank you for the invitation and for your nice words. However, I will not be able to attend such festival for personal reasons. With that, I would like to still avail such tickets for the other architects and designers of our firm."
Nakita niya ang kaniyang kaibigan, from the glass window of her office, who's currently staring at the e-mail she just sent.
It's been almost 10 years since the Spain era ni Natasha. The era where everything went wrong. But ever since the day she got back, she's been trying to improve herself for the better. And this e-mail? Triggered some of the bad memories that has happened before.
DK then immediately messaged their group chat, the one without Natasha.
tatlonghari (aka no natasha gc) DK: Huy! Nabasa niyo 'yung e-mail? Mingyu: Gagi, oo! Putek, magrereply pa lang ako na i'll go, tapos ni-reject naman ni Natasha. Anyare? Hao: Ano pa nga ba... DK: Na-trigger ata, pre. Nakatitig lang ngayon sa screen ng laptop. Mga 20 minutes na. Hao: Spain ba naman. Mingyu: Shet, sabihan ba natin si Cho? DK: Wag muna siguro. Diba, Gyu? Mingyu: Oo, gags... ang dami niya talagang Romanesque drawings, pati plates niya nung college, Spain-inspired talaga. Kaya kahit papano, alam ko galit pa din 'yan sa sarili niya for what happened eh. Hao: Tangina kasi eh. Hay, nakakainis naman talaga nangyari non, pero wala, that's her lesson... DK: Grabe 'no? Her dreams shattered because of that... Hao: True. Pangarap talaga niyan maging Architect sa Spain. Pero ang gaga, hay. Mingyu: Di niyo ba pansin? Never na siya nagdrawing or gumawa ng plano ulit ng Spain-inspired? Ang daming clients na gusto ng ganong style tapos binibigay sa ibang Architects sa firm. DK: Triggering talaga 'yung Spain sa kaniya, I would say.
DK went back to his office room and waited for Natasha to come out of her office. She only smiled at the staff and went out. He followed her location, tama nga si Mingyu, she's currently on her way to her old condo. Nasa parking na sila. He saw Natasha went out of the car and he then messaged her, "Nat! Saan ka?"
He saw her open her phone, tumigil saglit para magreply. Pabura-bura ng message, but still, she replied, "Bahay na! Whyyyy"
"Wala, wala. May naiwan kasi ako sa office!"
"Nandoon pa ata 'yung secretary mo hahaha"
"Ayt. Btw, is everything okay?"
"Oo naman. :)"
She sighed and went inside the elevator. DK waited inside his car, and messaged their friends, "Yeah, nandito nga siya sa condo niya."
---
Ever since she got back from Spain, binaon na ni Natasha sa limot ang Spain, and everything that goes with it. It was one of the best things that's ever happened in her life, pero sinira lang din niya. Everything went down the drain when she trusted the wrong persons, she almost lost everything, her friends, her family and even her life.
Spain was her dream. The freedom, its gothic-style buildings, the life, everything. But Spain became her nightmare.
As soon as she stepped inside her condo unit, she was welcomed by her old self. She even saw her board na may note: "Spain, please come thru!" "Spain, baka naman! Ako na 'to!"
Bukod sa notes, naka-frame pa ang iba niyang plates na Spain-inspired.
She sat down on her sofa, nakatitig sa painting that her mom gave her when she received the news that she's going to Spain. Hindi niya namalayan na umiiyak na din siya. Her dreams that turned into nightmares.
Every now and then, she tries to go back to her condo, to try and see for herself kung naka-move on na ba talaga siya. Truth be told, hindi pa din talaga. Regrets are always coming back to her. Masakit.
She can't even mention this to her friends kasi alam niya na hindi maganda ang nangyari noon. It's been almost 10 years but the pain, regret, and fear of losing everyone is still there. Alam naman niya na it was her fault. Pero ang hirap lang din na wala siyang mapagsabihan tungkol dito.
She can't even say this to her therapist, fearing that she will just open something that shouldn't be opened and seen.
She's keeping all these to herself, she's trying to bury this part of herself.
Her phone rang and it was Seungcheol. She wiped her tears and gulped, then answered the phone, "Hi, love! Napatawag ka?"
"Love, tuloy pa ba tayo tonight? 8pm kasi 'yung dinner with the Ortegas. It's 7:30pm na din..."
"Oh my, sorry! I got caught up sa meeting. I'll see you there na lang, love."
"Okay lang. Ingat sa pagddrive, okay?"
"Ikaw din. I love you, Cho." She hung up the call.
Next time ulit? Sana sa susunod kaya ko na. She said to herself, everytime she goes out of this condo. She's trying but still, the ending? She tried.
Pagbukas ng pinto, she saw her friend, DK, who's sitting outside her unit. "Hi."
Namutla naman si Natasha, "Bakit..."
"How long have you been hiding this from us?"
He then hugged his friend, tightly. And just like that, Natasha broke down in his arms, "I'm sorry, DK. I'm sorry."
Pati si DK ay naluha din, "Shhh." Using her phone, he messaged his friend,
DK to Seungcheol: DK 'to. Pwede rain check muna si Nat? Seungcheol: Ha? Anong nangyari? DK: Ako, ako may problema. I just need a friend. Okay lang ba? Seungcheol: Okay, sige. Di ako naniniwala. Okay lang ba si Nat? DK: Honestly? I think she was never okay. Seungcheol: Nasan kayo? DK: Sinundan ko lang siya, nandito siya sa condo niya nung college. Seungcheol: Ano nangyari? DK: Ask mo na lang sila Hao or Mingyu. Just–wag susugod agad dito. I don't think she even wants someone to know this side of her. Seungcheol: Okay. Please, update mo ako. DK: I will.
He never saw Natasha cry like this. Kahit noong ikinasal siya kay Seungcheol, she never cried like this. And it pains him to know that while everyone moved on with their lives, Natasha's still stuck in the past. They never knew this side of her. Not until now.
Akala nila she healed from that past. It's clear that she never did. And no one knows about it.
