The thing about the current California wildfires, as someone whose field of study is literally natural disasters, is that people want so badly to blame someone and to believe humans can fix it. It's the dual thing: something this bad can't just be random chance, someone caused it, and something this bad needs a hero to save the day.
I've seen calls for the National Guard to come in. They're already there, actually. They can't do anything because the Palisades are running out of water to pull from hydrants.
I've seen calls for aircrafts to fly in and dump water on the fires, like they have in the past. They haven't been able to do that because the Santa Ana wind currents have reached hurricane-level windspeeds at flying altitude, getting up to 99 mph. If you fly a plane into that, particularly the kind that drops water and at the elevation those planes fly, the planes will get blasted out of the sky and take the pilots with them.
I've seen people say it's God punishing the democrats. Sure, great idea, but if you believe in the Christian God, He sent His only son to pay for the sins of mankind and stopped inflicting natural disasters on people he disagreed with. That was, like, the whole religion.
I've seen people blame the politicians. Governor Newsom rejected millions of gallons of water. The damn democrats in office enacted all these policies to restrict drinking water access from poor people so that rich farmers can use it all. Both of those statements are spun to a certain political bias and also reference far more nuanced issues than can be summed in a single sentence.
But the fact is this: California's ecosystem is built for annual controlled burns that don't happen and the Santa Ana winds are an annual phenomenon. It's rare that the fires and the Santa Anas collide, but this year they did. And we don't have protocol in place for that. California doesn't have the resources for that. The US responded like this with Hurricane Helene, too- the Dems control the weather and sent the hurricane to wipe out the red states before the election; the good guy national guard will be there soon to help people, the government is handing out money to survivors, the evil government is denying survivors' applications for aid, it's all a conspiracy!
And a lot of it is anti-science conspiracy theory-obsessed MAGA brainrot but even well-meaning right-wingers and left-wingers alike are completely ignorant to the glaring reality of the situation: we're facing the impacts of decades of anthropogenic climate change and we can't save ourselves from it. There are no heroes here and there is no greater power to explain it. The best we can do is try not to let it get worse and to respond to these situations with empathy.

A More Serious Post: Evacuation Kits / Go-Bags.
Everyone should have a go-bag that they've prepared over time in the event of an emergency. It should include:
- All documents including IDs, passports, social security cards, insurance information, medical records: vitally include any documentation of recent medical procedures, documentation of any current legal proceedings, etc (or copies of all of the above)
- Credit & Debit Cards, cash, etc
- Medications (and clean medical applicators like syringes and such. If it needs to be kept cooled, I've seen people reccomend that the bag be kept within a few steps of a kitchen or fridge to be accessible to coolers/ice packs)
- Clothing (Three days of clothing per person tends to be a fair assessment. Typically add in a coat no matter the weather and a mask of any kind)
- Three days of non-perishable food per person per day. If there is a baby involved, include formula (EVEN if they are breastfed. Babies sometimes struggle to latch on when in stressful situations)
- Water. This rule of thumb is a gallon per living being per day for at least three days. Add an additional reusable water bottle for each being if possible.
- Animal/Pet Supplies (Pet food, collapsable litter box, backup litter in ziploc bags, poop bags, etc). Include Pet Medical Records if available
- First Aid Kit (which should be in your car anyway, but remember that you can't always take your car)
- Chargers for all devices
- Extra! Flashlight! Trust me on this one, you do not want to be relying on your phone. Preferably solar or battery powered but remember to add in extra batteries if it is the latter
- Basic Hygiene/Health Aid such as N95s, gloves, surgical masks, hand sanitizer, eye protection, saline, etc
THEN you add in sentimental items and valuables. Make sure you have thought about what items you own that you 100% could never ever live without and try to see if you can make sure they can be grabbed quickly if you are ever in an evacuation zone.
It is overwhelming and for a lot of people it takes time to curate this bag. You would much rather prefer to think about it now than panic in an emergency and forget something you can never find again.
Best of luck to all.

LA Wildfire Relief & Unhoused/Mutual Aid Donation Info 1/10/25
Hello friends, I've made a list of some of the many, many amazing grassroots organizations and mutual aid groups here in LA that are helping out with wildfire relief, advocacy for our unhoused communities, and advocacy for our firefightersmany of whom are incarcerated individuals making slave wages with no guarantee of continued employment once freed.
We've seen an incredible outpouring of volunteers in the last couple of days, but could still use all the help we can get. Even donating just a couple bucks or helping to spread the word is super super helpful!
This is by no means a comprehensive list, but I hope it provides a starting point for anyone who is looking to help out. Feel free to reblog and add more as needed, especially if there is an organization you want to highlight!
(Note: I'm including Instagram links for all of these orgs as things here in LA have been changing rapidly and that is where I have been able to find the most up-to-date information.)
💙 MUTUAL AID LOS ANGELES NETWORK (MALAN) is an online directory for mutual aid groups across the greater Los Angeles area. They've also been maintaining a massive spreadsheet of available resources for anyone affected by the fires, as well as information for volunteers.

💙 ANTI-RECIDIVISM COALITION works to end mass incarceration in California by empowering formerly and currently incarcerated people with a support network, reentry services, and opportunities to advocate for change. This includes the 800 or so incarcerated individuals who are currently fighting the wildfires here in LA with no guarantee of continued employment once freed.

💙 IT'S BIGGER THAN US provides community spaces and services to help South Los Angeles flourish. They've converted their HQ to a distribution center where they sort necessities to be delivered to those in need all over the city.

Donate: https://itsbiggerthanus-bloom.kindful.com/
💙 PROJECT ANGEL FOOD prepares and delivers meals to Angelenos in need, including first responders and people and families affected or displaced by the fires. They expanded to a second temporary kitchen location earlier this year to accommodate increased demand as well as increased numbers of volunteers!

But the groups listed do provide services across all of LA to Angelenos affected by all the fires.)

Hi Tumblr!! Idk if this’ll work but it’s worth a shot:
Any Californians on here? Involved with your local community? Experienced a wildfire evacuation lately or in the last few years?
If so: How organized was it? Had you done drills for it in the past? Was there a publicly available evacuation “plan” well in advance, maybe on your town/city’s website? Of the routes, et cetera? Or maybe there wasn’t one at all and you found yourself scrambling, log jammed in traffic as you tried to make your escape.
I’m doing a case study of wildfire evacuation plans (or the lack thereof) in California communities but I’ve been having trouble locating any evacuation plans or the like. So I guess I’m turning to tumblr! Haha. Hope this goes well.
