The issue with genetically modified foods isn’t their being genetically modified—unfortunately, in this sense it has become a snarl word for crunchy granola morons to expound their fears (and ignorance) of modern poisons evilly wreaking irreparable damage on bodies that should only eat “pure,” “acceptable” plant matter grown in a sacred grove’s grotto and constantly bathed in moonlight or whatever.

The real issue is that companies like monsanto are attempting to patent the genes of their products along with patenting the plants themselves and the genetic modification processes used to breed and raise them. They have already sued farmers in countries like mexico and india for accidentally growing crops that crossbred with monsanto seeds due to cross-pollination, and, as recompense, have tried to seize their land. Monsanto already has a nigh monopoly on the seed market and many farmers are forced to buy from them—what will happen then, in a market already dominated by a single few multinationals, attempting to expand that control further by the way of natural biological processes via arguing that actually, they have a patent awarded to them, so now natural growth of plants has no bearing on the rights of the individual? What kind of precedent will this set if dna can be patented by a single company and commercialised?

COP has always been a kick-the-can joke.

each performance ends with some collective resolution that will be phased-in within 30 years. it always seems to be 30 years? phased-in solar or wind energy, phased-in electric cars, reduced emissions, etc…

generational kick-the-can… the wealthy can ride it out, corporations will survive, lobby for concessions & governments will go to war over resources… war/military spending far exceeds financial commitments by the industrial powerhouses.

this joke continues with an oil baron as president of COP 28. & think tanks debating the mealy-mouthed terminology that will be used & how they may be interpreted — 'phased out' or 'phased down' … in 30 years …
