Hi!!! Am I the only one that thinks that Hyde and Jackie’s make up in 7x17 felt a little bit rushed,wired? I love that in 7x16 Jackie was successful and Hyde was proud of her. But their make up was strange. It felt as if they didn’t learn their lessons, they didn’t grow. I mean Jackie gains her independence, joins a fighting class, wants to secure her future and I think that Hyde slowly realizes he misses her. And suddenly BUM they make up. I read somewhere that season 7 writers wanted them to make up at the end of the season when both of them would realize how much they miss/need each other or sth like that. Do you know if it’s true? Halfway through season 7, season 8 was greenlit, and it changed Jackie and Hyde’s story arc. IIRC, they actually weren’t supposed to reconcile-reconcile, as they do in “Down the Road Apiece” (7x17) until Jackie gives him the ultimatum toward the end of the season 7. She would have continued to grow in her independence while Hyde continues to back off while pining for her.

But when Jackie gets the opportunity to move to Chicago, she tells Hyde, admitting that she still loves him and would give up that opportunity to have a life with him. This would’ve had a much stronger impact character-wise on Hyde and story-wise. He’d watched her become confident in herself without a man (a first in the whole series), but here she is, saying she’d still choose him even after all he does and says to her in “Winter” (7x11) and how she interpreted that as a lack of love for and commitment toward her..

If they hadn’t had their terribly-written reconciliation in “Down the Road Apiece (which I’ve spoken about in these posts: 1, 2, 3), her admission and the option she gives him would’ve had a much stronger affect on him. Maybe the show still would’ve done the whole Hyde Has to Get Completely Wasted to Decide to Commit episode (lame).

I hope instead the writers would’ve had him talking to everyone about it, like he does Eric, Fez, and Leo in other episodes. He would’ve been the Hyde of “Black Dog” (5x09), who seeks out outside reality checks and advice. Asking Red and W.B., for instance, could’ve been a huge moment.

Hyde goes to his two dads, and what they tell him convinces him that letting Jackie go would be the greatest mistake he’d ever made. Red says without Kitty, nothing else in his life would mean a damn thing. W.B. says that without his wife (whom, sadly, in my headcanon died), though their years together were cut far too short, he never would’ve known what true happiness feels like or had his daughter Angie.

Hyde: But is it fair to Jackie, man, for me to hold her back?

Red tells him that marrying Kitty didn’t hold her back from becoming a nurse and doing what she loves career-wise.

W.B. When you find that one person out of billions who makes you happy, that’s worth giving up a small-time job for. And with Jackie’s ambition, she’ll get a dozen more opportunities in no time. Or maybe she’ll decide to go to college if you commit to her, which is what I think she should do. I’m a big believer in education.

W.B. If you don’t give her the chance to be with you, then you’re depriving her -- both of you of finding out what a happy life with each other could be like -- and that would be a tragedy, son.

I would say that nearly all of my fanfics are AUs in some way. Even if only a little because it’s a small change. But I definitely get what you’re saying. TQOAMD was so much fun because of how magical it was. I’ve thought a lot about a Star Wars AU, but I probably won’t end up writing that. As far as crossover-type AUs (putting the T7S characters in some other universe to see how they would act), I think an Umbrella Academy AU would be super fun. Like, the main six were all born on that day and have superpowers. I can talk about this more in a different post so I don’t make this super long.

I totally get why you would stop reading fanfic because of that. I don’t like that either. I watched season 8 through entirely only once. It does have some funny moments and I love Randy and Leo, but overall it sucked. I always try to make Hyde accountable for his actions in fanfics. Do I always succeed? I don’t know.

18.best character arc and why (genuinely this is just an excuse for a long ass character analysis post): well i don’t know if it’s the best but Margaret’s arc is amazing, or at least for me. i couldn’t stand her in season 1 (i literally couldn’t) and hated the fact she was there as this sort of side-chick who was sleeping with a married Frank and trying to remove Henry from command and screaming at everyone but how much she grows !!!!! and i don’t even know when it happens (although Frank’s departure has to do with it, im sure) but she just becomes a compelte different person. she’s nicer, she screams less, she shows her feelings, she’s overall a great friend and everyone’s much nicer to her and i just love her so much!!!! i also particulary love her sort of father/daughter relationship with Col. Potter <3 and of course the way her relationship with the nurses is so much different in the later seasons (also s5 episode The Nurses????? MASTERPIECE). I’m so glad she dumped Donlad btw and I’m so glad she became her own person in the later seasons; no Hot-Lips, just Margaret, with all the flaws and virtues and that as the series progresses she is allowed to be her own person without needed to be dependant on a man (which doesn’t mean she doesn’t have her romances i mean, that’s part of who she is as a character in a way, but she becomes much more than just her the pretty head of nurses, the mean Margaret who shows little compassion and who’s there to be an authoritarian figure, she’s just a person and that’s explored and it’s so cool). i love her <3

By the way, early in the episode, a woman dressed like a pilgrim -- presumably from the land of untold stories -- came into Granny’s Diner.

Gotta admit, I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF. Perhaps Emma consulted her for fashion tips.

So . . . . . . I did NOT hate this episode! I was certain I would, and frankly, aside from one thing, I have very LITTLE memory of it because I spent a fuck ton of time bitching about this show while it aired live, but this one was a fairly decent episode, minus the CS bullshit. I thought a Cinderella centric would be ridiculous and a waste of my time -- but I was wrong.

Writing Advice (mostly for beginners )

Dark Sides

MUAH-HAHAHA! Welcome to another edition of writing advice that ....no one asked for. Ok, just for the record, I'm making this post mainly as a sort of stress relief. I would've worked on my character spotlights, but I'm still figuring out how I'm going to do them exactly. Don't worry, I will start that right after this

Before we begin proper, let me make something perfectly clear. You do NOT need to take my advice or agree with me. This is simply me giving advice that I hope will help others. If you'd like to add on anything, or give your own thoughts on this matter, please feel free to do so. Btw, here, table of contents because yes:

Part 1, What the flippity-flop is a "dark side"?

For formality's sake, let's discuss what a dark side is. A "dark side" is a term meant to discribe how a usually good thing or person has a more negative aspect about them. "Dark", of course, being used to describe behaviours that are seen as being morally wrong. Greed, anger, you get the picture. As an example, say you have a character who is usually sweet and harmless, but has a hidden malicious streak. Congrats, you've found a character with a dark side. However, let's be a little more specific as this definition of having a dark side can apply to any usually character with a flaw. In storytelling, a character with a dark side is almost always a good person, however, they have some negative quality about them that society doesn't see. And this negative quality is usually something extreme, like being a serial killer.

You'll often see this trope in genres such as horror, or thrillers. There is more then one way go give your character a dark side, so let's go over some ways to do so.

Part 2, Can a dark side come from a character's own flaws?

Absolutely. A character doesn't need to be processed or have something out of their control occur to them in order to have a dark side. I honestly find it disappointed how few people actually allow a character's dark side to come from their own flaws. It can lead to great character depth and even character development, two things that can make a really interesting character. These characters don't need a demon or anything outside their control. They're rotten apples that just have a bright exterior.

An example of a character with this kind of dark side is Johanna from Sweeney Todd. Specifically, the musical. The movie admittedly butchers (pun intended) her character. After her father was unjustly imprisoned and her mother went off her rocker, Johanna became the ward of the despicable Judge Turpin. Under his care, Johanna was imprisoned inside his house for most of her life, and of course, Turpin is perving on her and wants to marry her. During the story, Johanna meets Anthony, who she doesn't even know much about, and he falls in love with her at first sight. Turpin tries to stop this relationship by locking Johanna in an asylum, but she kills the guard and runs off with Anthony. Throughout the play, we get hints that Johanna isn't as sweet and pure as she appears, and who knows how much of her relationship with Anthony is really love or her desperately trying to get away from Turpin, taking advantage of Anthony and using him for her own gain.

3. Demonic possession

I'll be honest, often times this can feel like a cope out. Oh it's not the character's fault. A demon is just controlling them. My advice for dark sides that involve possession is to perhaps focus on the mental state of the person being possessed. Did they want to be possessed? Do they like it? How do they deal with it? How does it affect them? Yada, yada, yada. By focusing on how the person feels about the possession and how they deal with it, you can create a sympathetic and interesting character the audience can care about.

Also, try to make whatever is possessing them interesting. This may be a me thing, but honestly, almost all the time the thing doing the possessing is just some one note baddie, whose entire personality is "LOL, evil." Look, yeah, the idea is that they're supposed to be bad, but can we get some variety? Maybe they like cracking bad jokes. Maybe they enjoy Shakespeare. Maybe they're a romantic. Maybe they're possessing someone in order to escape something. I don't know, just stop with the one note baddie!

4. Problem with using DID

Otherwise known as multiple personality disorder, this disorder used in media to give some excuse for our good guy to be a bad guy. A recent example of this has been done in the movie, "Spilt". Again, this is often seen as a bit of a cope out as it gives a lazy excuse for a good guy to suddenly be Jack the Ripper. However, in recent times, this trope has been scrutinized by writing critics, and since a lot of amateur writer's use this trope, I feel as though I should touch on it here. A lot of people feel as though the portrayal of DID in this fashion is, well, offensive. It portrays those with DID as dangerous individuals with some sort of Jekyll and Hyde thing going on. Speaking of Jekyll and Hyde....

5. Discussing Jekyll and Hyde

While The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is by all means a wonderful story, I find that a lot of people rip this story off when they use the evil split personality trope. The funny thing is, Jekyll and Hyde is actually a better example of a dark side coming from one's own flaws rather than that of an evil split personality. In the story, Hyde is created when Jekyll experiments on himself. What is this experiment? Jekyll is trying to seperate the good and bad from a person to see what would happen if you had an individual who was "unrestrained by morality ". Guess what that means, kiddos. Hyde, in a way, IS Jekyll. Hyde is Jekyll unrestrained by morality. He's all of Jekyll's flaws anthropromorphed into a person. Hyde isn't a case of DID. Personalities created by DID, also known as "Alters" , are created by the individual experiencing trauma at a very young age. Trauma so severe, their brain develops different personalities just so that that person can deal with it. Hyde isn't an alter. He's a glorified display of all of Jekyll's flaws created by science magic.

6. So what do?

According to people far more knowledgeable about DID than I could ever be, alters generally aren't violent mass murderers. Alters can, however, be angry and even violent. Another thing to take into consideration is representation. Do you really want to risk representing a group as terrible people? I personally do not recommend using this trope if you're just starting out. DID is a complicated topic for a lot of people. If you really want to take the plunge, I highly, HIGHLY encourage you to do your research.

7. Final thoughts

Dark sides can be so much fun to do. There's so many directions you can take them in, and different ways of going about giving your character a dark side. However, be careful if your dark side is in some way due to a mental disorder your character has. If you don't feel as though you're ready to tackle mental disorders, I'd strongly recommend staying away from using them. When done right, a dark side can make a character not just sympathetic or scary (depending on what you're going for), it can create an interesting character.

Dehumanising and Dangerous - Mental Illness in Video Games

Some of you may remember an article I posted a while back talking about the accurate depiction of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Hitman (2016). I was discussing this with a friend and it got me thinking. The representation in Hitman is even better than first thought. Modern media – particularly more popularised media – is not kind to mental illness. We all know this. But in Hitman's case, the victim's OCD did not make him the evil doer. It's all too easy for lazy writers to paint mental illness as something that changes you from a mild mannered neurotypical into a violent neurodivergent monster much like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

There are just so many examples of this kind of villain. Farcry 3's Vaas did unspeakable things because he was “Criminally Insane”. The fact that Vaas was the game's poster boy as well did not do them any favours. Everyone knew his catchphrase “Insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results”. Silent Hill 2's villain had no definable motive other than insanity for making the protagonist run the Murder Gauntlet. Layers of Fear too, used insanity as a justification for the protagonist to cut his wife into pieces after her suicide to use in his “Magnum Opus”. Always seeking perfection but never achieving it.

Layers of Fear is not the only game to use mental illness to justify the player's actions either. The best example I can think of for this is, regrettably, one of my favourite games. Alice: Madness Returns uses a game mechanic called Hysteria, which sees you go berserk with extra damage buffs and increased damage resistance. This can be triggered when you reach a low health value. I know this sounds like a simple enrage technique but it is the name – Hysteria – that puts this into uncomfortable territory. It feels like a weaponised crisis state and that's upsetting. Alice is shown to have memory problems and PTSD from events in her childhood too so this further pushes Hysteria into the “Not Cool Bro” category.

Asylums are also far too prevalent as a set for a Horror game. Manhunt 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, The Evil Within 2, Outlast, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, The Inpatient... I could go on and on. They are always painted as horrifying places, places to be scared of rather than places of healing. Whereas it is certainly true that mental health treatment in the past was nothing short of barbaric it is certainly not the case now, and I fear that people still believe they're going to be strapped down in a straight jacket and have their brain zapped randomly without any anaesthetic.* It's just not the case. I feel like being set in an asylum also gives games a horror genre unnecessarily. For example, Town of Light. Town of Light was challenging, difficult to play through but not horrifying. I feel like the classification was entirely wrong in this case. To me, if you call Town of Light a horror game you need to call Life is Strange a horror as well. Both have terrifying scenes but only one is set in an asylum. I'll let you guess which one made me cry. The “aesthetic” of the creepy asylum is one that should be questioned, and it should be carefully thought about whether placing your game in such a place is necessary.

I have spent time in a mental hospital. 3 months. I have to say the anticipation of going in and remembering all the horror games I'd played, fearing violent fellow patients and inhumane treatment, was worse than my actual stay. The perception I got from playing those games made me so much more afraid to get the help I needed to at the time. I can guarantee that these perceptions of treatment facilities have caused other people who really needed the extra help to avoid these places out of fear too. You also fear yourself if you are diagnosed with a mental illness, perhaps this means you are “evil” too, and about to go on a violent rampage as soon as you get stressed? (You're not, btw.) There comes a point where we have to take responsibility for the media we put out into the world, and this is doubly true when it could affect vulnerable groups. Life is hard enough with a mental illness, don't make it harder for people to seek treatment. Be a bit more responsible. Indie titles are getting better at humanising mental health disorders – in particular Actual Sunlight and The Cat Lady which show accurate depictions of what living with depression and suicide attempts is like, we just need Triple A titles to catch up. It's time to stop selling us mentally ill villains. There are much better motivations out there.

*Electro-shock therapy is still practiced in mental health treatment, but the patient is sedated to avoid any pain, and is on the whole a lot more humane. The patient can also opt out of the procedure. It can be really effective in the treatment of certain disorders and is nothing to be scared of. Source: Personal Experience.

Disclaimer: You won’t hear much about the virus in this. I’m not a denier, I know the damage and destruction covid19 has caused and the death toll, therefore I am not yet cold enough not to realise this is going to sound completely selfish, but that is my decision. This was the year I decided to officially identify as Non-Binary, not that anyone actually cares or believes me or things i'm "(insert stereotype at will)" enough. except for those very VERY rare people who do and who actually listen and hear me when I speak

Anyway -It has been a trashcan fire of a year since February/March February when I saw the Hu and Counterfeit alongside Ally. And I say February/March because that was the weekend I say my year ended...the good part anyway. Because it was that weekend when I got the ultimate honour, privilege and miracle of meeting Jason Carter, After that it was like a Dementor had French kissed the year and I can’t be the only one who thought it? Conventions and gigs postponed, rescheduled and ultimately cancelled, masks, social distancing, lockdowns the works. And can I just say - I didn’t clap, and I don’t feel in the slightest bit ashamed for it. Despite or maybe because I have friends and a few family who work in the NHS I couldn't bear to be a part of the hypocritical BS idea. I live in a country that will clap for their 'beloved' life saving NHS but then stand silent when Pay rises are frozen and when the NHS is in danger, we as a country expect a lot but don't lift a finger to gave back, clapping doesn’t pay bills. But...Bright points in the year let’s try staying positive and leaving the crap outside shall we...well... The main one has got to be that the US finally found their sense and President Elect Joe Biden will b sworn in January 20, 2021. After that... I’ll have to get back to you. Oh...no..no that’s not one... seriously I’ll have a think and get back to you. Conventions: Just one this year, for me, because of the obvious... But what a convention FCD Events presents 2258 a Babylon 5 Conventions: Where, as well as finally being among actual self confessed fans and being able to tick a b5 convention off my bucket list after starting cons way too late to attend the OG cons I did the impossible... I MET JASON CARTER... have I mentioned this? Have I? Should I say t again? I MET JASON CARTER!!! Also Mira Furlan, Tracy Scoggins and Patricia Tallman, but I met him! Finally! And... Just a reminder I did warn you guys, several times that it was likely hell would freeze over if I ever got that particular honour, do not say I didn’t. I’d never done an FCD before, I’d meant to, even bought a ticket but it just never seemed to happen, but the second someone said b5 con, I was so there! Karan Robinson made my year by making me the Anla’Shok uniform. And Nadine added the cherry on top by making the belt buckle that ONLY Marcus and Entil’Zha Sinclair wear: D (for the record: Velcro still hates me) David one of the organisers of FCD kept randomly shouting “We live for the one.” And when people other than m actually knew the response and responded... dude kick in the feels I kid you not. Next Year (Angel Willing) Adam and I are attending the Teen Wolf conventions entitled “Howl at the Moon 4” in Paris, France... which is cool on so many levels not least of which being I get to meet JR Bourne and Daniel Sharman again and get to visit the church of St Julian of the poor. And yes, there are cons planned here in the UK. But... well. It’s already looking Grey, and not the good kind. Music and Gigs: Two gigs one after the other at the 02 Ritz in Manchester. The First:

The Hu a Mongolian band who Ally really likes and I think are pretty cool. They are amazing live there’s no doubt, can hold their own in England even in a room of idiots. The 2nd :

Counterfeit (also with Ally) I went VIP and got to meet the boys again, and listen to a Q&A with them. I will forever love them, not just because of Jamie’s acting side despite what people say. Didn’t realise how special until recently though because; after keeping fans going and hyping up new singles during lockdowns, they recently decided to go their separate ways. Jamie’s gone solo and he’s put three songs out on YouTube. _ I was meant to be attending a one off gig by Ruelle and Fleurie both of who had music used on Shadowhunters, even talked my friend Lou into it, but it was a victim of the lockdowns and things and I’m not the optimistic type so I doubt it’ll ever happen now, will be lucky if even one of the ladies comes over here if I’m honest. Recently I’ve rediscovered a love for Black Veil Brides and their leader Andy Black’s solo stuff. Olivia Hyde of Bad Pollyanna recently killed everyone in her black unicorn’s fanbase with an amazing solo album, me included. Ally has introduced me to a few interesting bands this year, *Wingtips – very 80s Goth, very Ally (translation: very cool.) *Allegiance Reign – a Japanese Samurai metal band, not sure what Ally actually thinks of these guys, she found them while perusing YouTube and thought of me :D Suggestions greatly accepted, I am always up for giving new stuff a try. Hopefully next year things will even out and gigs will be able to be put on again. TV and Fandom’s: *We FINALLY got Roswell: New Mexico in the UK, and ITV blitzed through 2 seasons in less than a month, but it was enough for me to decide I loved it, maybe more than I did the original. Alex is my fave, but obv Michael isn’t half bad, nor is Max when he’s not making goo-goo eyes at Liz. * Finally got to see 9-1-1 Lone Star and I absolutely love it, (I kinda knew I would from all the talk) * Decided to give the Charmed reboot a 2nd look and it’s proved addictive, now waiting for s2 to be downloadable on Amazon or something. *In march I was so, so excited for the return of The Expanse and the fact the main cast were coming to a con in the UK, then.. The verse went to hell. I still Love the Expanse, but I’m not as die hard as I was, not for lack of trying. Still love it for Anna of course, any excuse to see her. *After 15 years Supernatural finally ended in 2020 with season15: I stopped watching religiously at the end of season 6 but that does not mean I stopped liking the show just that I didn’t like the direction (like with The Expanse recently) I loved watching the reaction of the fans, and how much they (we if I’m counted) mean to the cast. * I have to mention Cursed... My understanding of "friendship." is skewed, and I’m not saying that to be "Vulcan." it’s honest, and anyone who wants to know how or why just has to ask. But let’s leave it at that for this. It makes some things more stark... and I've said this recently, but this binfire has made even me more aware of who’s out there in my verse, whose pack, who’s potential, and who’s just pathetic. The last I’m not going to waste my breath on. The first two: Pack and Potential (read: new acquaintances /potential friends) Pack: Yes I go on about friends as 'Pack like a person whose OD'd on Teen Wolf... because I am so :P My pack as a whole are varied, and spread out across this country with a few dotted around Europe and Aus. hopefully they know who they are because I don't do mushy crap as they know. But if they do know, they know I'm there when I'm needed and more than willing to sod off when not. Yorkshire brass makes me frank and I’d hope fair. There are 2...mayb 3 who sit above the rest, in special place for the things they've done and things they've been through with me. I make no denial of that. But everyone is important to me. I've spent too many years and got too many scars and burned too many photos and bridges because of fake people and users to not be honest to a fault. It’s who I am. Potential: the Counterfeit gig in Manchester, 2258 and yes even Tiktok have given me the opportunity to make some interesting acquaintances this year, and some I hope will become friends in the real in the future, but for now I will say - "I am defensive, stand off ish, sometimes bull headed and of course opinionated, but I am by no means blind. Well… when I said “Licht bilingual headcanons” I actually meant “LawLicht headcanons with German included” (?). Ahahahahajhasd is that still ok for you Anon-chan? xD Welp, here they go anyway lol:

1. Licht starting to trash-talk in German to Hyde, thiking he wouldn’t understand, but then Hyde responds in German and Licht is shocked xD And… maybe a little turned on(?)

2. Licht being used to English so much (or Japanese) that he only talks in German when feeling homesick/sentimental. 3. That said, if Hyde sees him somewhat down, he goes and talks to him in German so he can relax.

4. Sometimes when Licht is practicing piano, Hyde starts singing in German to accompany Licht’s music. Licht secretly enjoys it.

5. I mentioned in a post some time ago that I like the idea of Hyde’s humming or singing calms Licht down. Well, Licht feels specially comfy when Hyde sings in German.6. When abroad, Licht and Hyde like taking walks while talking in German, even if they know the local language of the place they’re in. Surpisingly, Licht feels more comfortable and expresses himself more openly when he’s talking in his mother tongue. 7. Licht’s speech becomes slightly different and becomes more talktative with Hyde in German. Not because of the language itself, but because of the type of message he’s saying. Some things he find it less embarrassing to say in German -wink wink-8. Licht gives Hyde German nicknames. Sometimes, sweet nicknames that the rest can’t understand (“the rest,” referring to Mahiru and the other Eves www)9. Hyde dirty talks to Licht in German 8) Successfully(?)10. ^He actually says kinky stuff in German to Licht in front of everyone cause he has no shame knows no one will understand. Except they actually do, since his Servamp siblings probably know a bunch of languages too ww.

While Jackie is set on moving on, Hyde is set on getting Jackie back and changing his ways for both her and his sake. Whatever it takes.

Eric never left to Africa, and Kelso is in Chicago with Brooke, but is still around. Donna sticks to her feminist values like in the early seasons and is a better friend to Jackie. Jackie is close to the Forman's as well, and her relationship with her father will be prominent and better here as well. Overall positive with some angst.
