This imagined and constructed notion of hypodescent has therefore intended to genocide Afro-Indigenous/Black Native kin’s indigeneity and relegate us to commodifiable and enslaveable chattel even before we are born, thereby ensuring that we could never exist as Indigenous or belong to our Native cultures or nations. These two policies—blood quantum and the one-drop rule—have worked simultaneously to the detriment of Afro-Indigenous/Black Native kin and Freedmen relatives, as they have demanded that we compartmentalize our identities, relinquish any claims of belonging and/or citizenship in our nations, and ultimately necessitate that we deny parts of ourselves that we have every right to fully realize. In addition, this has been and remains an effort to further marginalize us within indigeneity and within our families, communities, and nations. These policies in tandem also work to insinuate that Afro-Indigenous/Black Native kin and Freedmen relatives are simply “not Native enough.” They often go further and assert that we are not, nor can we ever be, Native at all. This of course is false! Black Natives exist, and we belong!

something interesting about dungeon meshi's worldbuilding: the elf-tallman hybrids that we see are referred to as "half-elves" rather than "half-tallmen"
hell, they're oftentimes just called "elves" by other characters.
in the case of laios's party not knowing marcille was a half-elf, it's explained that they just didn't know she wasn't a full elf. which makes sense, none of them pay enough attention to that kind of thing, or know enough about elves to know that certain features like rounded ear tips are highly unusual for full-elves.
but it's more interesting in the case of kabru's party. kabru, who is super observant and was also raised by elves, describes both marcille and fionil (who are both canonically half-elves) simply as "elves". kuro also simply identifies marcille's scent as "elf", despite half-elves probably having slightly different scents than full-elves.
and! even word-of-god type material casually lumps marcille and fionil in with elves, rather than lumping them in with tallmen or giving them their own half-elf category

is this a case of hyperdescent (or hypodescent, depending on if elves are thought of as higher or lower status than tallmen in a given culture)? is it just that half-elves tend to be more similar to elves than to tallmen in matters like lifespan?
of course, our sample size is literally 2 and we know so little about fionil, it's hard to know for sure or rule out other factors.
SIDENOTE:

what is this random character from the elf page's deal? their rounded ear tips definitely look like they're a half-elf, but their facial features and size and ear shape makes me think their other half is half-foot, rather than tallman (...or maybe they're just a kid, lol). the adventurer's bible does say that tallmen can have fertile offspring with half-foots, and we know that tallmen can have infertile offspring with elves. so it would kinda make sense if half-foots could have infertile offspring with elves too.
#eliot posts#dungeon meshi#dm spoilers#dungeon meshi spoilers#delicious in dungeon#worldbuilding#half elves#i was gonna propose that it could be matrilineal or depend on stuff like how they self-identify#but kabru's party would not know that sort of stuff about marcille or fionil#also. that last sidenote was mostly stemmed from me designing my oc adamellie and looking through lore stuff for her

Hopefully I am not overstepping by saying this but. It’s amazing how American leftists understand hypodescent when it comes to “typical” poc and afford them minority status, but when it comes to Ashkenazi who have naturally intermarried with whites during their long diaspora— like all diaspora— they’re magically all evil whites with no Levantine blood left.
The really frustrating thing about left-wing antisemitism is that it's so often couched in terms of anti-racism. It's a fucking trip for me, a black jewish guy, to look at someone's political statement and go, "Okay, so you don't want me to experience ethnic violence because I'm black, but you do think it's okay for me to experience ethnic violence because I'm Jewish."
That doesn't help me feel any safer!

Do you know much about the American Reconstruction? Could you (or your followers) recommend any readings?
Hey there :-) I’m afraid I don’t!
I know W. E. B. Du Bois wrote a book about it, Black Reconstruction in America, which I haven’t read myself but judging by Du Bois’ other work I’m sure it’s worth reading.
Libcom.org also has a section with several books/articles on the Reconstruction Era here.
Hope that helps!

If you had the chance to get a single, free tattoo of any size or intricacy right now, what would you want it to be of?
gonna be pedantic and ask “what constitutes a single tattoo” etc etc....that said if we’re talking about a singular Piece, i’ve long wanted a very elaborate dragon-round-a-castle-tower half-sleeve, full color, curled around my right bicep -- i think it’d play well with the stained-glass one on my left.
Are you the kind of person to fantasize about getting into fights?
shfdjshdfj i fantasize more about just. beating people up....not actually receiving damage myself, literally just ridiculous revenge fantasies lmao

Hypodescent- a system created to keep children from mixed marriages in a lower category and help slave owners own their offspring. Commonly known as the one drop rule. The picture below shows how commonly used the idea of hypodescent was used among slave owners.

Above is a picture of a family that has a black mother and a white father. They have three children that are half black and half white. In the days of when the Jim Crow laws were enforced they would be deemed hypodescent. Simply meaning less than other races because they are mixed with black.

We will have #Thanksgiving again in 2021 During this Year Of Years we’ve had a fun time assessing #NativeAmerican proportionality. The #MixedStudentUnion has perhaps been the most open social space in my life where I’ve felt comfortable openly discussing it. Let’s review what we know 💁🏻♀️ Dad’s side: Maternal ➡️ maternal great grandmother was half Cherokee ➕great-great grandfather was Irish Paternal ➡️ African Mom’s side: Maternal ➡️ great grandmother was #biracial, half Native American Senator E Warren ➡️ 1/32nd Native American So I’m Native American than Native American but doubt I could ever identify in that manner as she has a few times. #Hypodescent is another entire conversation... Anywho, hope everyone has the best #TurkeyDay possible given that 2020 keeps on #2020ing #WearAMask 😷 #SocialDistancing Avoid airports at all costs (at Quarantine 2020) https://www.instagram.com/p/CICnpOSD9MY/?igshid=6bvc5dwp0kts

Chapter #5 Fieldwork:
white supremacy - this is an example of white supremacy because the sign is exuding other people based on the the color of their skin. They aren’t accepting any other races into their community. White supremacy is the belief a that whites think they’re above other all races.
Hypo descent - In a phenomenon known as hypo descent people categorize biracial individuals belonging more to minority racial categories than to majority ones. For example Barack Obama was described as black man despite common knowledge that his mother is White. Hypo decent are children racially mixed unions to the lower rank groups.
Jim crow - Segregation of public schools public places and public transportation and the segregation of restrooms restaurants, and drinking fountains for whites and blacks. The u.s. military was also segregated. Mainly is the south after the end of slavery days.
nativism - An example of nativism is someone who will only date people who were born in the united states. nativism is the favoring of people born in a particular place over those who moved there.
Individual racism - This form of racism can be intentional or unintentional examples include telling a racist joke believing in the inherent superiority of white people crossing the street to avoid passing a black man. Individual racism refers to an individuals racist assumptions beliefs or behaviors and is a form of racial discrimination.
race - a person's self-identification with one or more social groups. an individual can report as white black or African American , asian American, Indian and Alaska native, native Hawaiian and other pacific islander or some other race. When Someone asks what race you are, it means a flawed system of classification with no biological basis you come from.

something i've noticed as a mixed "white-passing POC" is that people will claim you're white until it's conveniently time to be blatantly racist to you. i've realised people don't actually see me as white when being white matters, but simultaneously don't see me as a POC when being a POC matters.
why did we never move past hyper/hypodescent this shit is so unbelievably stupid just let me be mixed in peace.
fuck, you said it! that's exactly it!
like i am very light skinned but that has never stopped people from finding other shit to be rude as fuck to me about- my eyes, my brow, my nose, my hair. i have privilege some mixed folk dont have and i know this! but i'm somehow not allowed to claim being a person of color at all due to that One feature, and that's Hmmmmmmmmmm. Bit sus
let us be mixed in peace, holy shit, agreed. i hope you can find the peace you need, it's a nightmare being mixed sometimes, but we have each others backs when the time comes and i greatly appreciate that fr

CH. 5 YOUR TURN FIELDWORK
Phenotype: This picture shows phenotype because it shows the different races. It shows the different colors of everyone and the different features of everyone. Every race and person has a different genetic sequence. An example of phenotype is height, hair color, eye color, and more. Phenotype is basically how you’re viewed your physical form and structure. Phenotypes aren’t just physical traits. It can also include behavior. In females typically white people get surgery to change themselves to look more like African American women. It’s crazy because many African American people don’t want big bottoms and want to lose weight because they think they’re too big, but that is what society makes it feel like.
Miscegenation: is a demeaning historical term for interracial marriage. (page 162) The picture shows a black and white couple married. Miscegenation comes from the Latin word. White men were punished for marrying or dating black women because of how many white women there were. I don’t understand why this would be a problem because you can’t control what a person loves or like. If that’s their preference then that’s what people like even if it is a different race or gender. People believe that miscegenation is an answer to world peace. I think Miscegenation is amazing because you can learn much from a different race. Different backgrounds and different environments.
Racialization; is the process of categorizing, differentiating, and attributing a particular racial character to a person or group of people. (page 178) An example who would once have been forbidden from academic spaces and still feel out of place must navigate these repressive structures in their educational journeys. In Covid-19, people stopped eating from Chinese stores because supposedly covid-19 came from “Chinese people”. Or when people don’t eat Jamaican food because they don’t want them cooking their food. Putting people in groups is not okay because it's like stereotyping people. I wouldn't want to be placed in a group because of the color I am. Or separating me from something because of my skin color.
Microaggressions; is Common, everyday verbal or behavioral indignities and slights that communicate hostile, derogatory, and negative messages about someone's race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. (page 182) Microaggression shows in this picture because of her hair texture. So people will say things because of how she looks. The quote someone said to her was probably very hurtful but sometimes people might not think they're affecting someone with what they say. Microaggressions are used a lot today. But instead of assuming they could ask her race.
Intersectionality; is an analytic framework for assessing how factors such as race, gender, and class interact to shape individual life chances and societal patterns of stratification. (page 187) Examples of intersectionality include gender, caste, sex, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, religion, disability, weight, and physical appearance.
Hypodescent is Sometimes called the "one drop of blood rule"; the assignment of children of racially "mixed" unions to the subordinate group. (page 169) This picture shows one drop of blood. It basically means if you have one drop of blood of any different race. In the picture, the girl is 100% Chinese and 100% caucasian if you see the in-between it means she’s mixed. Another example is how Obama his mom was white but his dad was black so when people found out they said he wasn’t fully black and he was mixed.

What is race?
The debate that has gone on for many years is: what is race?
From our textbook, race is defined as "a flawed system of classification, created, and re-created over time, that uses certain physical characteristics to divide the human population...". Race also has no biological basis, meaning that there are no biological traits within our genes that determine our race. So ultimately, race exists as a social construct or human-made concept, but not as a biological concept.
Since race was created to divide humans, there has been an evident gap in power and equality amongst the groups, this concept is known as racism. Below I have included 6 concepts regarding race and racism to further explain the two concepts.
White Supremacy
youtube
The song that I included by Childish Gambino is one of the greatest examples of the effects of white supremacy within the United States. Within the song, he discusses the troubles of being a black person in a country that was constructed with racist individuals and ideals that are still present in modern times. Examples of those troubles include a church shooting that occurred in 2015 where 9 innocent black people were murdered. The YouTube clip I included is a brief video that talks about various sundown towns that are in the United States. A sundown town is an area where non-white individuals are not allowed to live, and should not be within close proximity after the sun has set (hence the name) to avoid becoming victims of gruesome acts. Both the song and YouTube video show examples of the concept that white is the "superior race" and therefore have a higher power to discriminate other racial groups.
Miscegenation
youtube
Both the clip of the wedding and the image depict people of alternate races either getting married or already married. That is mainly what the key concept of miscegenation is about, as it focuses on interracial marriage. This is a key concept of race/racism as for a while throughout history this was forbidden but is now becoming a normality in society.
Institutional Racism
Although this may seem like a picture of 5 regular men, this actually shows the central park five. These men at the ages of 14-16 were falsely accused of rape, assault, and attempted murder of a woman despite no proper evidence connecting them to the crime. This specifically shows the racial disparities that occur within the criminal justice system as rather than putting in the effort to find the actual suspect(s), they found it easier to pinpoint the crime onto 5 innocent black teenagers.
Nativism
The article above talks about Donald Trump's plan in 2020 to "suspend" immigration in response to the coronavirus. This is a prime example of nativism as Donald was trying to promote discriminatory acts by linking the coronavirus disease to immigrants, furthermore trying to preserve a nation for the "natives".
Microaggression
youtube

The clip I included is an accurate demonstration of how certain people undermine the effects of microaggressions in today's society. The cartoon I included shows examples of common verbal examples of microaggressions that people say to others. Microaggressions typically are subtle or accidental acts/comments of discrimination towards certain groups. In the cartoon, the girl in the middle may appear to be Latina explaining why the person said to her,: you don't speak Spanish?". This is a microaggression because (1)just because someone has certain features this does not mean they are Hispanic/Latino, and (2) even if she is, this does not mean she has to speak Spanish.
Hypodescent Rule
youtube
The hypodescent rule also rereferred to as the one drop rule deals with the classification of a racially-mixed individual. Many people refer to Barrack Obama as a black man, despite him being mixed as he has a white mother and black father. The video I included discusses this topic as the question poses: what determines one's blackness? Do you need to have a certain percentage of black in you to be considered black? With the hypodescent rule, as long as you have some amount of black within your ancestry, you are considered black.
Conclusion Although the social construct of race has been created to divide us, society has worked towards a brighter future that recognizes our differences and celebrates them. Truthfully, I believe that there is only one true race and that is the human race. I don't believe in letting a man-made concept continue to divide/separate us and I hope one day we can all come to that agreement.

How Is Race Constructed Around The World
Microaggression
Microaggressions are characterized as routine, everyday slights and insults that send hostile, disparaging, or negative messages about a person's race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. This picture, which is attached, shows the microaggressions that students experience in schools. A classmate made a snide remark about a boy, saying that he was only so good at sports because he was black. It makes no difference to their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation if they are skilled at something. One of the strangest things I've ever heard a white woman say to a black woman when she was working with me was: "I didn't know black people's hair grew so fast." purely because she saw her wearing braids after seeing a small ponytail the day before. She had no right to say that. . These microaggressions, no matter how small, have the same effect as the more intentional, harmful slurs.
JIM CROW
Jim Crow laws emerged as a result of the abolition of slavery. These laws were put into place to keep Blacks and Whites apart while also letting Black people know which race was still superior. This entry is a disgusting representation of the Jim Crow era in America. Black people are not permitted to enter the town after dark unless they have a legitimate employment excuse, according to a sign in the picture. This is particularly heinous because, as I suspect, White people felt justified in attacking or killing Black people in the evenings because the law had previously stated that they shouldn't have been out at all.
White Supremacy
White supremacy is the idea that white people should rule society because they are a superior race. The Nazis and other groups that emphasize white supremacy want to make white people the only superior race that exists. This frequently occurs when microaggressions occur, for example. Non-POC individuals think they are the solution to all of the world's issues and that their lives revolve around them. Now that everyone is accustomed to it, it has become natural.
Miscegenation
Miscegenation is the copulating of individuals who are thought to be of various racial types. Back then, intermarried couples were forbidden, and if they had children, the children were referred to as bastards and other derogatory terms based on race. Interracial marriage and occasionally even sex between people of different races were illegal under the anti-miscegenation laws, which were used to enforce racial segregation at the level of marriage and intimate relationships.
Hypodescent
Hypodescent is the classification or identification of a biracial or multiracial person as belonging to the lowest-ranking racial group in terms of social status. In the United States, this rule was targeted and applied, as in the case of Susie Phipps. She assumed she was white because she appeared to be it at birth. But in 1977, when she asked for a copy of her birth certificate, she discovered that she was identified as "colored." A Louisiana law mandated that anyone with even a small percentage of black ancestry be considered black. As a result, Phipps' legal case was lost because the state was able to prove that she was 3/32nds black. Of course, the rule does not apply in reverse. Any black person with white ancestors would not be seen as white or get treated differently.
Race
Race is a faulty classification scheme that divides the human population into presumably distinct groups based on physical traits The term "race" was initially used to describe groups of people who shared a language and to denote national allegiances. By the 17th century, it was used to describe physical characteristics.

Chapter 5 Fieldwork
#1 Racism
Find 'racism' on TikTok | TikTok Search
The definition of race is "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized." I'd say this illustrates the concept of race because I think that racism is in the definition of race. I also read something about racial identity, and it stated that "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized."
#2 Phenotype https://www.tiktok.com/@justinjikan/video/7156721600140954926?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7177196937103738411
Phenotype is the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment. For example, size, hair color, mating behavior and pattern of movement are all traits of a particular phenotype. Phenotypes can change as a result of environmental factors, or their traits can change as an organism evolves or adapts. This would fit into race culture because this allows people to make race assumptions based off visual looks. I think that this also does incorporate racism in its own because of the possible ignorance that this topic brings.
#3 White Supremacy
Find 'white supremacy' on TikTok | TikTok Search
the belief that whites people constitute a superior race and should therefore dominate society, typically to the exclusion or detriment of other racial and ethnic groups, in particular black or Jewish people. "White supremacy, beliefs and ideas purporting natural superiority of the lighter-skinned, or “white,” human races over other racial groups. In contemporary usage, the term white supremacist has been used to describe some groups espousing ultranationalist, racist, or fascist doctrines. White supremacist groups often have relied on violence to achieve their goals. White supremacy, beliefs and ideas purporting natural superiority of the lighter-skinned, or “white,” human races over other racial groups. In contemporary usage, the term white supremacist has been used to describe some groups espousing ultranationalist, racist, or fascist doctrines. #4 Miscegenation https://www.tiktok.com/@smileybunch/video/6964453445877255430is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7177196937103738411
Miscegenation is the interbreeding of people considered to be of different racial types. For example, or to further explain this Miscegenation is the blending of different races, whether by marriage, cohabitation, procreation, or sexual intercourse. Miscegenation has been outlawed in the past, but over time society became more tolerant and accepting of the idea to the point where the term “miscegenation” has a negative connotation today. “Miscegenation” is all but eliminated from the modern vocabulary, with terms like “interracial” and “cross-cultural” now replacing the racist and archaic “miscegenation.” Id says this also generates racism people some people don't like the idea of interbreeding of people different racial types which for some people generates problems and creates racism.
#5 Hypodescent
Find 'Hypodescent ' on TikTok | TikTok Search
Hypodescent is defined as classify of a child of a mix union or “the subordinate category of any one of many ancestors”. It is also known as the one drop of blood rule. As for example, if a girl have a white skin tone and both of their parent are white, however one of her grandmas was an African- American. The entire concept of hypodescent is wrapped up in the obsession with so-called ''purity of blood.'' This means that your ancestry is racially homogenous. In this system, any racial mixing dilutes that purity. Since you are no longer ''pure,'' you don't belong in the pure category, and since this is a system where there are only two categories, you're automatically assigned to the other one.
6# Institutional Racism
Find 'Institutional Racism' on TikTok | TikTok Search
Institutional Racism discrimination or unequal treatment on the basis of membership in a particular ethnic group typically one that is a minority or marginalized, arising from systems, structures, or expectations that have become established within an institution or organization. "Unlike the racism perpetrated by individuals, institutional racism, also referred to as systemic racism, has the power to negatively affect the bulk of people belonging to a racial group. Institutional racism can be seen in areas of wealth and income, criminal justice, employment, health care, housing, education, and politics, among others." Id would say that this is a prime example of racism and how it comes in different ways. And I found out that The term "institutional racism" was first used in 1967 in the book "Black Power: The Politics of Liberation" written by Stokely Carmichael
