silent hill 2 rambling no one asked for under the cut

anyone who's followed me for a minute will know that i'm an angela orosco girly from start to finish, but GOD if the remake doesn't have me feeling a certain kind of way about eddie too

i feel like...............i feel like it would've been very easy, given what we see of him, to make eddie A Certain Kind of Way, and idk how to phrase it better than that but...........what we get of his story, right, is he's been the brunt of some awful, awful antagonistic behavior. a bully, maybe? someone his age? an adult who really just made everything worse for him? both? whatever it is, it's clear that he's been on the receiving end of some rancid bullying, for lack of a better term, and that's why he's so defensive, so quick to whirl back on james, AND, at least in the beginning, so quick to backpedal when james raises his eyebrows at him

now, by the time we run into him in the labyrinth, it's pretty safe to say he's gone off the deep end, right? he's at the end of his metaphorical rope. there's no more backpedaling and no more crying, he's just furious and done and ready to go all-out. and i feel like. it would've been. so easy. and so, idk predictable, for that to be his character the WHOLE game, right? the bullied becoming the bully, the guy whose torment can be read as justified because he's just so fucking unpleasant and maybe even dangerous

but then i think about laura.

we see eddie interact with laura, and it's......idk man, it stops me every time. laura's a little bit of a snotnose, right? she's bratty - and understandably so. she's pokes at eddie, she prods at him, she makes fun of him, and he gets a little dour about it, a little pouty, but he's never mean to her. he's never angry at her. he's never even SNAPPY. even in the original, as he eats his pizza and she teases him, his response isn't to insult her back or snap at her, it's "hey, why did you have to say that???" he sits with her in the movie theater and they talk. this place is full of monsters, but he sits there and eats his ice cream, talking to a lost little girl. and again, he's pouty, sure. he's a bit of a storm cloud, but he's not..........mean. he's not cruel. he's just sort of. sad. and frustrated. and resigned to the shit situation he's in.

"why don't you just say you're sorry?" laura asks him, and eddie, beaten, sighs, "no one would believe me. they never do."

i'm not about to become an eddie apologist, don't get me wrong, but like. IDK MAN the remake is just so, so gorgeous and it has me feeling all kinds of ways about the gang. i'm sitting here thinking and it hit me out of nowhere that, uh, eddie is...kind of nicer to laura than james is?????????? like???????????????????? obviously the way james treats her changes as the game goes on but idk. IDK!!!!!! most of james and laura's interactions are them shouting at each other and fighting, and then there's EDDIE of all people, just. hanging out with her. having a chat.

Favorite character from a non-Wildbow work?

that's fucking really hard. I'm a huge fan of superheroes and the like.

I mean from a pure blorbo perspective, there's a few obscure spider-man characters? I remember some post like how a person who read 100 comic books their favorite characters is skrumble skrinklo who appeared in one issue of Splorkman in 1997 but like. I am a big big fan of april parker/mayhem, the possible-clone of mayday parker from the MC2 universe (called universe 982), who showed up for I think 10 issues before she became evil, fought spider-girl, and then died. I'm also a big fan of jessica drew/spider-woman, the cloned version of peter parker from the original marvel ultimate universe (called universe 1610). Both of these characters I like because the original writers dropped the ball with them so astronomically hard that I get mad.

The thing about comics is that almost nobody will ever like a comic for how good it is, they'll only like it for how good it could have been. Like you'll only like a comic character or storyline for the really cool ideas it never does anything with ever. Cause like both these characters could have been really cool! but they weren't because the writers never explored any of the really cool ideas. Even though comic books have been running for like a hundred years basically no character has ever actually been explored because of how many usually very bad writers are around.

Along those same lines is Supergirl, my favorite DC character. See? the first and most popular version of supergirl is the kara zor el version of supergirl who debuted in nineteen fifty fucking nine and i have never seen an actually good take on her character except for the tom king one from supergirl woman of tomorrow and that still fucking sucked (plus tom king is a jackass and i hate him). My favorite version of supergirl is actually the new 52 one, again, not for the actual execution, which was the worst thing ever, but because of the ideas it never ever even remotely explored because its a comic book and nobody has ever written a good comic book ever.

I think my favorite video game characters are new vegas characters so i don't think i can say who they are considering that you're playing new vegas literally right now. Maybe arthur morgan? that's the basic bitch favorite video game character, but i do really like him. less than [spoilers new vegas character] though.

favorite webcomic character is ava ire (from ava's demon). thistle (from daughter of the lilies) is in second place i guess (she does lose points for being straight. heterophobic flagler you heard it here folks) but it's ava ire.

For a book character... I'd have to say maybe um. Hmmmmm I honestly haven't read a real book in ages. or at least not one with characters i really liked. Not since dreadnought. Which is kind of embarassing, that book was definitely made for a younger demographic and it shows. See one of the things I liked about wildbow was how interesting and unique his characters were and like. i'm really running dry on characters here, they all feel really flat compared to wildbow's stuff. I kind of liked mai from magical girl gunslinger but that's a royalroad litrpg so it doesn't count as real literature. I'll say I guessssssssss bilbo baggins?????????? It's really weak and it's totally possible i'm forgetting some character who i'd like way more though
