I think we all wanna know about the process for the last two pages

HAHA IM GLAD. THESE TWO PAGES TOOK FOREVER

I was really proud of them when I sketched them out and you can definitely see a lot of details ended up staying the same between the sketch and the final! These were the pages that I probably had the clearest ideas on because I wanted especially Ace drowning and Tage saving him to be impactful and pretty memorable, hence all of the different viewpoints and poses. Getting the head angle on that final page was really annoying but there are some excellent references on referenceangle.com for heads turned upwards, like the following:

What probably took the longest this time around was the lineart, actually, because I got Really Into It and couldn’t stop adding more detail.

This becomes! A trend! Because that one panel of Ace’s hair made me feel like I had to keep that consistent quality of lineart for the rest of the chapter even after that. So that’s why I had to split the chapter lmao

Extra notes on coloring:

Doing underwater pieces is actually a really good exercise for color theory, since warm colors in cool lighting and in a blue environment are often quite different than you’d expect them to be. You can definitely do a shortcut by using hard light blending mode on full opacity, as I’ve shown here, but when you use hard light blending mode, sometimes some specific colors may turn out muddled or brown-ish, like the orange, so I find picking your own colors also gives you some nice freedom over like. Cohesion in your palette.

The other thing that really makes the underwater scenes is the bubbles which are honestly a lot of fun to do! After you realize that bubbles are fundamentally just weird little glass/ mirror balls that take even less effort because the shapes will get distorted anyways you can sorta just do whatever. The key is mostly getting sharp contrast between the darker blues and the bright highlights I think?. If you want a tutorial on bubbles let me know :)

What did i learn from this whole thing i did? That everyone has a unique style, that even if they try to change it it still stays theirs and it's still unique

I also found out that everyone, small artists and big artists, has flaws! It's comforting to know that everyone has flaws so I know I'm just learning and getting better everyday

Another thing I got from this is that everyone's styles are always changing and warping. But thats fine! Because everyone's moving and changing, and the worlds always moving and changing!

So, don't be so hard on yourself if you're struggling to draw or find an art style, how you draw is unique to you and you'll like it one day

Just keep drawing everyday and you'll get there.

I suggest doing this challenge, on paper or digital, wether you color it or not, or post ot or not!

It's great to try out.

managed to find a cel and its matching sketch from my favorite scene in lupin iii: farewell to nostradamus (showing the tagalog dub with my translation because it's genuinely great, also "defective" is not a typo, it's lupin's nickname for detective zenigata in this dub lmao)

being able to obtain a cel that i instantly recognized from a movie/scene i love was one of the things on my bucket list, so im extremely happy to have found this!!

more photos and notes about the artwork under the cut:

the cel and sketch came in one packet, i was initially pretty worried because the package didn't have any sort of hard surface like cardboard to prevent it from bending a lot, but fortunately it's in great condition

whoever previously owned this stapled the cel to the sketch (😭), so i was bracing for the cel's paint to be stuck to the paper since it's 20+ years old, but i let out the biggest fucking sigh of relief when i saw that it was miraculously still separated, so i went ahead and carefully removed the staple

the cel shows very early stages of vinegar syndrome (slight deterioration on the cel structure, though no wrinkling, and super faint vinegar smell) and has light fading in the lineart, but it's still pretty well preserved for its age (made around 1994 or 1995), this cel will have to be stored separately from the rest of my collection to prevent it from spreading to them

this is most likely a key drawing rather than a breakdown or inbetween drawing based on the circle around "13" in the top right corner of the sketch (breakdowns are usually marked by a line underneath the number, inbetweens are usually unmarked); im surprised this cel didn't cost more since it's a really nice key drawing from a feature film, but im guessing it was cheaper since it's zenigata and not the other main cast characters

there is a tiny timing chart near the bottom, i've reached out to my animation lead co-worker to ask if she knows what this indicates since im not very confident in reading timing charts yet haha, will update this note once she gets back to me

EDIT: my co-worker has responded, she said that the timing chart on the sketch is most likely a very simplified version of a quarter timing, here is her note:

EDIT: my co-worker also said that the X's in the sketch most likely indicate that those are empty areas, telling whoever is doing the cleanup to not color in those spots (i had noticed afterwards that there are more X's in other spots that are meant to be empty, so she's definitely on the money)

EDIT: @cultistzenyatta has informed me that the japanese note should read "shirt" シャツ, as in to distinguish between zenigata's coat and shirt sleeve for cleanup to color in

Hi!! Love your artwork and your Charlastor AU with Dawn!!

I was wondering if you think Alastor would make any dawn-themed dad jokes and puns in your AU, and if he does, what would Dawn and Charlie think of them? I can’t really think of any off the top of my head right now, but I know ‘a brand new dawn’ is a phrase he could maybe use!

Now regarding the art advice!! This one got HELLA long so I'll hide it under a cut for everyone's comfort lmao

I know it sounds shallow and like worthless advice, but a huge huuuuge part of getting better at art is to just... make art! Practice makes perfect - it develops your motor skills, gives you somewhat of a muscle memory for certain basic shapes that are a necessity to have a good feel of for good foundation sketching.

Practice also develops your eye for compositing and for how color theory actually applies in practice, it basically helps you develop a more consistent grasp on art as a whole :D

There are some things I've learned over time that definitely helped speed things up though xD

here's some rough sketches I did just to demonstrate what my rougher drawings can look like - also a little diagram (on the right side of the image) of things I keep in mind for the average proportions of a human body!

I tend to sketch very loosely and try to capture the overall vibe and silhouette/rough shapes first before I even think about adding details - there's a certain flow, squish and stretch to everything that's just much easier for me to get a good feel for when I use quick, loose brush strokes and as few lines as possible to convey a concept.

Repeatedly sketching humanoid characters of various shapes, builds and sizes for years genuinely helped enormously in getting not only faster but also more consistent with it!

I'm fairly well practiced with hands and expressions especially at this point since I like to focus on those in my art often, so those come fairly easily to me as well now!

Something I learned along the way about keeping a certain liveliness to my artworks is that sometimes you have to forego anatomical correctness a bit if you want to fully express specific emotions - if you try too hard to keep everything perfectly proportional and realistic, it can make the outcome look stiffer than you might've aimed for - this is something I actually struggle with in my cleaner artworks :'D The ones I do proper lineart for, since a lot of the flow of the original sketch gets lost in the process haha

As for artists/artstyles that inspire me...

There's @/southpauz for example!

Her artstyle is unbelievably expressive and her eye for compositing and her use of shapes is SUBLIME - it inspired me to let loose more with my expressions, exaggerate features a bit more and to push the way I try to vary facial features :D

Then, back when I had that massive Rise of the TMNT phase, the artstyle of it has actually greatly influenced how I draw today!

It manages to be detailed and highly recognizable despite its deceivingly simple style - it exaggerates shapes and uses it to communicate personalities, emotions and action super effectively and taught me a lot about utilizing those more efficiently myself :D

And last but not least Ishida Sui - the mangaka behind Tokyo Ghoul (which used to be a highschool obsession of mine)

His striking use of colors, textures in abstract, yet symbolically heavy ways and his courage to be rough and expressive rather than looking polished, yet also having such a solid understanding of realism blew me the fuck away as a teen and still does now!!!

His art may have less of an influence on my style today than it used to back then, but I think in my more exagerrated, more horror-esque drawings you can kind of see it still :'D Either way I greatly admire him as both a writer and artist.

Sorry for the delay in answering this, I wanted to answer it well!!!

Here's my typical 5-step process:

flats

he has been flatted. You'll notice I also colored the lineart at this stage as well! Also, I do work with the background at the same time, but I have hidden it here for simplicity.

2. Cell shade shadows

I used to skip cell shading and just ball with my rendering, but I have found starting out like this is much faster!!

3. Airbrush shadows and colors

I did two things here, one is just a touch of airbrushing the colors into eachother, to help make everything more harmonious. The other is to airbrush colors onto my shadows! I set that layer to multiply, and mess around until something looks a little like I want.

4. Painting

This is the time sink - there's no getting around it, it just takes forever!! It's a lot about making the dark areas darker, and artifically injecting some color diversity - I like to diversify shades, and just slap on slight hue shifts as i go, and if it sucks I just paint over it some more. I draw different colors into eachother (look at the black shirt above, see how i bring in the tan and whites into the grey?) and add detail and texture. It's a little hard to explain beyond that, hmm... Do let me know if you have specific questions about it!

5. bedazzle and effects

I add extra highlights to the highlights, maybe a sparkle or two on a hard edge, hash lines for texture, and occasionally I also do screentones in shadows. Also, importantly, i blur things that shgould be out of focus! See on the arms and legs here - the bottom image has them blurred more intensely the further they are from the focal point. It's a small thing, but this effect goes a long way!

Annd done!

It's the little things that make a rendered piece sing! A balance between detailing and speed is a tricky one to figure out - I'm still working on that myself!

Also, there's two different ways I render at the moment, one is the quick-messy for sketches, which is what I've done for most of my fanart lately, but I assumed that you were asking about my full process so I went into detail on that. Tho if you're curious about my sketch rendering, anyone is welcome to ask me about that as well!

You’re challenged by Bookworm Becky!

Superheroine Wordgirl wants to battle!

My “as close as I can get to Pokemon” style is back! ... and just as confused as before.

Ah, the official Pokemon style. It changes with every generation, has confusing shading techniques in some gens, and I just kinda had to go with “the best I could manage” again XP (pretty proud of Bob’s tail flame though! That was tricky to do).

Moving on from my artist woes, it’s Becky and Bob Botsford and their secret identities of Wordgirl and Captain Huggyface! Been on a Wordgirl kick recently and since it came directly after a Pokemon kick, well, my brain inevitably crossed the two over. My brain also decided that it was enough of a masochist to want to take another crack at Pokemon style(ish), so here we are! I think the lineart has improved for the most part for human characters; I definitely felt more confident making Becky/Wordgirl! I actually based her off Shauna from XY... Not sure what urged me to do so, but I guess it worked so I ain’t complaining, haha.

Posing was actually tricky. I was originally going to put Becky in a bit more of a cutesy pose, but actually decided against it. She’s Becky Botsford, mild mannered ten year old. I figured, why not make the contrast between her and the Wordgirl pose all the more apparent? Ya know, put all her energy into the bold super-identity! So that I did, though I will say hands pointing at the screen is not a fav of mine to do at the moment, lol

As for Bob, I honestly didn’t really think of many difference there’d be between him and a regular Monferno, but I did add a couple of extra hair tufts to the back of his head. They’re there to represent the front hair tufts he has in the show :3 And of course he’s gotta be eating something, so I looked around and found a berry that would work for him. Not that he’d discriminate against most other berries, but I wanted one that made sense in some way, so a Shuca berry it was! They halve the damage from a super-effective ground-type attack, and have a “spicy-sweet-smooth” flavor chart and with Monferno being a fire type, I figured that spicy part worked out.

Speaking of, it actually took a moment of my time to brainstorm through what Pokemon to make Bob. It had to be a monkey, but what kind? First, there was the point of what type to make him, so I watched a few Wordgirl episodes and happened across a fight between him and Leslie and basically slapped my forehead because a doi- Fighting type for his ability to do Karate! So with that narrowed down, I tried to go through my memories for what monkey Pokemon were fighting types. Passiman came first, but they’re a bit too big for Bob to be. The Mankey line doesn’t quite fit in with his body type or nature, so I had to forgo that too. Then I remembered the fire-fighting starter monkey that made an obvious fit: Monferno! Which also works out because of course a ten year old would have a starter Pokemon as a main partner, and Monferno also shares the blue and red that Captain Huggyface’s uniform has.

Becky/Wordgirl wasn’t too hard to redesign outside of doing it in (the as close as I can get to) Pokemon style. The hardest part of Becky was the skirt thanks to shading, but I think I managed something decent. Second place actually goes to her book bag though. That main button was harder to nail down than I thought it’d be... As for the charms, I thought they could be a cute nod to two main things about her- the secret identity and her love of unicorns, which I figured would translate into a love of Ponyta/Rapidash in the Pokemon universe. Especially the Galarian forms, haha.

On the Wordgirl side, there was a bit more I decided to add. Most of it was dedicated to making her uniform feel a little bit more Pokemon-y, so I added some extra details to the boots and gloves then added pouches to her belt. The goggles were technically a part of that too, but also just because I like the idea of her one day adding them to her uniform (maybe one too many times of getting random goop in her eyes would make her consider it lol). I definitely like the results- I think it makes her look a bit like she’s wearing some sort of space hero outfit :D

As for what exactly this AU would entail, I’d like to think it wouldn’t change much from the main show. Becky lives in a city somewhere in Unova, living her daily life as a regular trainer that goes to a quaint little school with her partner Pokemon, Bob the Monferno (that’s totally normal to have as a starter in Unova; please ignore the part where she should have a Unovian starter). But in her secret double life, she takes on the odd supervillains in her city as Wordgirl, alien superheroine with a perfect vocabulary! But I do imagine Captain Huggyface would get to do more with his moveset of Ember, Close Combat, Mach Punch, and Focus Energy, (Becky unfortunately slacks a little on Pokemon training) as well as an appetite that rivals a Snorlax.

hard to define 'ending' in the context of art - it supposes a sort of narrative structure not every of my drawings has. maybe this one. because, in the words of the rolling stones, you can't always get what you want.

i guess this defines happy ending but i also had to think of this one, just because i can hallucinate the story that it took for them to get to that cocktail sippin' ending.

yes, sometimes lol i've had people fighting wars in my twitter replies when i posted cas/jack art. wah wah wah he's his dad. wah wah wah they're brothers. wah wah wah kill yourself. ridiculous and irrelevant. i do still think fondly of some replies i get though, like the one that was in russian and said 'such a talent and only for the sake of lust... sad.'

Hello! I'm very much in love with your art style, I can see the emotion, mood, time and effort u put into them as an artist. I know u get this a lot, but i really appreciate ur posts, as an amateur artist myself looking at your art motivates me to improve myself and inspire me.

ahh thank you :’) !! I’m happy my stuff can inspire you !! Personally I think I struggle a bit sometimes with diversity in body types ? That and drawing static standing poses.

Because I draw mostly fanart on here, and a lot of it is for the same series, a lot of the bodies I end up drawing are masculine, muscular, and fairly lean. I think it does a bit of a disservice to my ability to draw other builds, and I struggle sometimes with variety in my personal work and character design haha

I also like doing dynamic poses and find that when I have to draw static standing stuff, my work can look a little awkward sometimes. That and I misjudge how tall people are and I always have to shrink torsos to make room for the legs lmao, I don’t have as big a problem with that when I’m doing more dynamic stuff.

I also struggle with lineart, especially in the face, which is why I never do it LOL, I have a real hard time getting the line quality and dynamism that’s present in my sketches which can be frustrating. Plus my hands are really shaky so drawing clean lines is difficult in general :’)

I don’t think most of these problems are specific to digital art ? But lineart one definitely was what stopped me from getting into digital stuff before. Wishing you luck with digital art ! I’m always down to give tips !

And I saw that you said you draw on your phone?!?! So i always.. sketch it out. Roughly. Get the details down, yes, but this part will pretty much be invisible, so it doesnt have to be perfect. Sorry boyd) In this piece (and some others) i redid the sketch a few times to get everything placed and sized how i like it…

After this..? I just put in the colors under the sketch. Here, id like to get them relatively like how i want them to be (though sometimes ill just put in a single color and choose the colors WHILE im rendering)… Its Good To Keep Them Messy I Think

And then… I put all the layers into a folder and render it all on a new layer…. Its that simple… Some people will do it on a bunch of layers to keep all the different elements separate, but i feel its confusing and youll get tripped up in all the layers… I simply use one. Sometimes ill make a new layer if im not feeling confident about a detail, but, usually, its just one. The colors i laid down? im simply colorpicking those and making them more defined, usually blockier.. And dont worry! Its easy to move things around, having to repaint some stuff isnt as bad as you think (ESPECIALLY if you dont use lineart. I hate lineart sometimes😌)

And its done after i get alll the details i want in (sometimes, you dont need to detail everything. Focus on whats important! If you like..). Well, the drawing part is, atleast. I usually run it over with some special brushes i made to make it look more scratched up and dirty. Then i do some chromatic abberation shenanigans! And some noise. Then… Its done :)

Though… if there is one thing i must say…… You can wiggle around the hue and saturation a little while rendering it makes it more interesting and flavorful… You can wiggle it around ALOT to make things look holographic…. Oh! and keep it simple… And also desaturating colors a lot combined with the context of other colors around them can do some crazy stuff… I can make orange look like green 🕴️ (Okay that was . More than one thing. And?)

But really..:: Do what YOU want. Its your art :) I cant tell you what to do! Do all of these things. Do none of these things. Just do what YOU want to. Nothing I or ANYONE says dictates what you must do or what is correct in your expressions.

  Ok since you drew Gai incredibly soft i couldn't take my eyes from your drawings. But today was the last bit of me holding myself back from showering you with praise. The way you draw the hands is beautiful, and oh you've created a amazing face drawing style for yourself. The facial expressions you drew really reflect the emotions of the characters very well. Not to mention the bodies. Ok... Yeah well, no need to give you headache with my talking-

But please let me ask. Did you practice drawing each body part individually, or did you just go over your favorite characters and let your drawing style settle on its own? I ask this because every time I take a break from drawing, the way I draw the characters' faces changes and I can't get the consistency I want. The same goes for the body and hands, how many hands did you have to draw to be able to draw hands that soft and good :')

  And lastly, can I ask which brush you used in PS? Yes, I'm sorry to bother you with my questions, but as I said, I couldn't stop myself after seeing your sketch and lineart comparison today.

Disclaimer: I use a translator, so if there are errors in the text, please excuse me in advance! I'm glad to hear praise in any form, and if you really want to please me with it - don't hold back, haha! I am very pleased that you like my style and you ask questions - I will be happy to answer them! In fact, I always drew a character, not a separate body part. Once my great-grandfather told me that hands and even eyes, apart from the whole body, are able to convey the emotions of a character better than words, and this left its imprint in my subconscious. I always drew the way I wanted myself, how I felt the character and felt the slightest changes in the perception of the drawing when I changed the positions of my hands or slightly covered the eyes of the character in the drawing. This is a kind of magic that arises through experience and work. But I must be really crazy if I haven't practiced drawing my hands separately from my body, haha! Only if the composition and the idea required it. Even in manga, my favorite things to draw are hands, hair, and eyes. And to be honest, I had to draw A LOT OF hands. And it also seems to me that you should not worry that your hands or face did not turn out as you expected from yourself. Drawing is still hard work and you know it perfectly well, but you probably see progress in your abilities even after so much time without a conditional pencil in your hands. I'm going to sound corny, but you can definitely do it if you just enjoy drawing and practice a lot. Lee taught us not to give up haha! You will definitely succeed! And yes, this is the most common brush in PS, I originally had it among the main brushes after downloading the program itself. It's hard for me to say the exact name, because I have a program with Russian, but the closest brush in appearance is KYLE Ultimate - Mr. natural or Rough Inker 3 I will be glad if I have the courage to answer your questions and you will ask more! Absolutely amazing linework and generally incredible vibes. They are drawing a webcomic called CHOKEPOINT i have been meaning to check out but I adore their art just in general. I've been using a lot of their art as inspo lately and can't get enough of their cyberpunk designs, horror vibes, and use of pops of colour to emphasise and showcase their incredibly in depth line work and details!

I continue to come back to their art and they are also a huge inspo for me. I'm generally trying to find a way to adapt their colouring into my own style because it's absolutely gorgeous! Do you like Mecha? Do you like guns? Do you like cute girls and/or boys!? Well, hot shit, me too!!! You NEED to check out Tyto_Alba! Straight up, another one of my top 3. He has legitimately changed the way I do my lineart, the way i draw soft shapes (like butts and stuff :3c) and my god the mechs as well! I legitimately had a hard time finding a good singular piece of their art to use here cos they are so fantastic at both sexy art AND mechs that i really had to find something that showed off a little of both! Something that I personally have noticed with their art as well is just how fuckin incredible they are at drawing HANDS! I am obssessed with their skill with hands and I hope to match up to them some day in that regard! I feel like I'm getting there but I LOVE the way theyre always so Shaped and well posed. As well as how detailed they manage to be without being too attention grabbing unless intentionally in the focus! What's more, they use simple colours so effectively! Much to be loved here! And of course, their NSFW content is top tier! Really excellent soft shapes and squish and really fantastic context and intensity!

RizDraws (NSFW)

Listen... LISTEN OKAY!!! We're hitting the NSFW exclusive part of the list and you have to understand that NSFW artists are just as incredibly skilled as any other artist and that porn is FINE AND NORMAL! Having sexual interest is not unusual. Having a desire to draw these things is a human and regular thing. I could talk for paragraphs about how puritanism is harmful and ultimately denying something natural and inherently human and anyone telling you otherwise has ulterior motives. But that's not what this post is about. I say this because an artist showcase tends beat around the bush with this stuff but I am unwilling to be vague about this. NSFW art is valid and, what's more, Important! That being said, Riz is incredible! The squish! The faces! The fluids! The Dicks! All so good! They somehow straddle the line between pinups and porn in such a brilliant way that I would be happy to have their art on my wall and I'm not kidding haha! The particular way they colour with the chalky texture is often sought after and I see why! Personally I don't look to emulate it myself but I most certainly enjoy looking at it! The way Riz uses their lines and their particular style of chalky colour to make the squish of clothes against flesh really look real! It's somethin else!

Andava (NSFW)

Now where Riz does the mid point between pinups and porn, Andava is definitively porn haha! xD That being said. Hot damn dude! In particular the way they do bodies and have a variety in body types, shapes of boobs and faces. Especially faces. Their characters are really good too and it's very easy to develop a favourite (for me it's Erika and Alexis) There's a reason people have cosplayed their characters and it shows! Absolutely love the variety, the situations/positions they draw! Theyre incredible as making stuff feel messy as well! Highly recommend browsing through their stuff and finding a favourite OC of theirs haha! I was lucky enough to get a commission off them years ago when they were still fairly small in terms of following. So long ago that Tumblr still allowed porn at the time haha! I dont think Discord even existed yet! Still wanna grab a commission off Andava of the same character one day! ALRIGHT I think I will leave it there for now! I could absolutely go longer and talk about even more of my fave artists and why I like them, and how they've inspired me but I get the feeling I should hold off haha (unless of course people would like to see more) I hope this has thoroughly answered your question. Sorry for the wait! I've been away for the weekend and now that I'm back the fatigue is hitting very hard. Don't got too much new stuff to share, honestly!

I've been slowly but surely putting a lot of love into a commission illustration that I won't be showing until I'm finished with it, but y'all can have the teensiest lil sneaky peeky of the lineart for funsies.

Also I had in my notes app a small, quick thing I wrote that I'll share, too. Nothing major! Was just having some fun exploring Faith and Hiram again. Her, in a very vulnerable conflicted place after Fallbrook. Him, taking a leap and tearing down one of his own walls as a last effort to make his newfound fondness known.

Not super cleaned up and probably going to change but ya'know that's why it's a wip after all. I'm very tired, haha 👍

The growing irritation in Hiram's voice made her feel sick.

Faith looked away from the screen, hoping he couldn't tell her lip was quivering. She was so tired. Her puffy eyes were red and sore.

Is this why he called me? Just to scold me?

She tried to open her mouth to speak but her voice abandoned her.

"Faith..." he took a moment to let his tone calm "I believe you, okay. I believe you have fond memories of your time together and that he was good to you. But how certain at this point can you even be that any of that was truthful?"

Faith instinctively put her hand up to her neck, only to find it empty.

Hiram could see in her face that he was only causing more pain, but he was concerned. How was he supposed to feel?

All he knew about the vicar was how he betrayed his captain and how broken up she's been over it since. He worried that if Faith couldn't detach herself from these feelings then she'll only be inviting Max in to take advantage of her all over again.

"I just.." Hiram swallowed, knowing he'd have to talk about feelings if he wanted her to listen "I'm worried about you. I don't want you to get hurt again."

Faith's heart skipped a beat. She wasn't prepared for Hiram to drop his usual demeanor.

"I know I can't change your mind about going to Scylla. With him, I mean. But know if... if things don't..." he was growing frustrated and embarrassed "my door is always open is what I'm trying to say!" he finally blurted out, almost as if he were terrified.

Oh, how he wanted to end the call so badly.

So uh

I went unexpectedly hard as fuck on this So the story is that I was hanging out in my discord server with my friends and my friend who i will call bird man, talked how he should draw his dragon character asoma at some point but he doesnt have a design for him yet. I know bird man struggles with drawing and character design and I also just love (re)designing characters for my friends so I innocently asked what he would describe the character to look like, thinking I probably wouldnt be able to make him anything with my current state of mind and body. I get a vague description (which is no problem because it means more creative freedom) and get to work on sketching

This was my first draft that I shared:

Colors were a lil rushed because i hadnt eaten anything and was waiting for groceries to be delivered so i set out to render it once i had my groceries and i had eaten a bit Then after eating and doing the dishes I refined the sketch to this

I changed the head angle and added wings so there wouldnt be as much empty space Then i set out to do the lineart with a new brush, leading to some experimentation before i ended on this:

Now it was time to redo the colors and i decided to change them up a bunch because the original palette didnt really look too nice and was kinda rushed and i knew i could do better. Now I dont have screenshots of my coloring process because I was in the zone and just kept working on it without more breaks until i ended up with the fully rendered version so uh yeah My muse just came out of nowhere, tackled me and then shook me like a rabid dog with a dog toy Can't say I will draw another piece as detailed as this one any time soon or even when i will make another drawing in general as im just feeling out when and what i want to draw or if i want to draw at all Anyway sorry for the long post Basically I wanted to make bird man a gift and my brain just took of running with the idea. Didn't make bird man anything for his birthday because i was very out of it back then so i guess thats why my brain went so hard on it haha I hope you guys enjoy!

[ meet the prisoners! (t2 edition) ] prisoner 004: chiba naomi

this woman. she caused me so much suffering. basically, when i first finished working on her t2 design, i. uh. i noticed that i made a mistake only like a day after i was done.

her arms were too short JDJKSKSDLKSLK.

so i kept procrastinating and telling myself that i will fix it later and when i actually tried to do it, IT WAS SO PAINFUL BECAUSE IT ALREADY HAD ALL THE COLORS AND SHADING AND ALL OF THAT. i still managed to fix it though, but if the lineart looks weird, that's why! her arms still look wrong to me, but trust me, they looked worse.

but anyway, i still love naomi's character a lot even if her crime isn't that mysterious or difficult to solve <3

General info.

T1 Verdict: Naomi was voted innocent and she did not expect that. She genuinely thought that she will be voted guilty, she really thought that Eiji is that person who will understand how bad her crime actually was.. Like, she even kind of told them about how young her victim was before her video got extracted, why would those two forgive her? Haha, so they're not that different from those other people.. Naomi was shocked at first, but at the same time she got used to hearing that what happened wasn't her fault, so.. Eh, maybe she should just agree with the guards. She's tired of trying to prove that she's guilty, she had tried to do it so many times before she even arrived here, so what's the point? People will still forgive her for some reason. Maybe she's just that sympathetic or it's so easy to understand her, she's not sure. So for now, she will just embrace it and go with the flow.

T2 Personality: Naomi certainly did change and she's not even trying to ask for a guilty verdict anymore. She's more calm and relaxed now, but it's not because she was forgiven, it's simply because she decided to accept everyone forgiving her. She's tired of trying to make everyone believe that she's this dangerous murderer, so if others think her crime wasn't that bad even though her victim was so young, fine, she'll just nod and agree. Naomi is also more honest about her feelings now and even though she still gets along with most younger prisoners, she's more open about disliking Asahi and says that no matter how hard this boy is trying to make others think that he's changed, he still deserves to be punished. The fact that he's the youngest prisoner here is scary to her not because "Oh no, what a child like him is doing here?", but because this child must have done something truly awful to end up here.

T2 Relationship dynamics:

She gets along with both Akio and Aimi and she's happy to see that they've become friends. Of course, she didn't want Akio to get injured, so she helps Aimi with taking care of him sometimes. If they need something, she will ask the guards for it as usual and she understands that because of Akio being voted guilty, now he really needs someone to request things for him.

Her relationship with Riku, another prisoner who's one of the younger ones, is a bit more complicated, because she really does want to help him and she has experience with helping kids who have mental health problems (even though they were much younger than Riku), but she also has a feeling that Riku doesn't want to get help. Maybe he thinks he's fine or that he doesn't deserve to be taken care of. If that's the case, she can understand him. Actually, she would love to know more about him. Who knows, maybe their family situations are actually more similar than they both thought.

Her relationship with Asahi is much worse now and uh, Asahi, if you thought she's gonna be your new mother figure, you were wrong. She doesn't hesitate to stop Asahi if she sees or hears him making fun of someone again and if he says something rude, she will tell him to shut up. She's had enough of his behavior and she actually thinks that Asahi trying to act more nice and polite makes him more suspicious. Like, why is this 12-year old (the prisoners' birthdays are canon here, so yes, he's actually 12 years old now) trying to manipulate all prisoners and even the guards? Who does he think he is?.. Oh well, it probably would be easy for a cute child to make others feel sorry for him. That's also probably why he was forgiven anyway.

I think her singing INMF is actually more like her kind of making fun of people who forgave her. Yes, this can be seen as both her breaking the fourth wall and calling people out in-universe. Like, oh, okay, she gets it. She's just this poor tired woman who killed an annoying child who was hated by everyone around him, both kids and adults. It's fine, she understands. She's so pitiable, isn't she?

Trivia:

Her letting her hair down can be seen as her trying to act more honest and more true to herself. No more holding back now.. At least she sees it as being more honest, though I can't say she's right. I actually feel like her agreeing with everything the guards do sounds like her running away from reality.

She feels more comfortable in her new outfit now because the old one reminded her of her crime way too much. (She also was wearing the same clothes both when she committed her crime and when she was brought here)

She doesn't really care about being voted innocent or guilty anymore. She's okay with the guards doing whatever they want. It's not like her opinion matters here anyway.

A dark shade of red was chosen as her second image color because of how her T2 MV ends (or where it ends, to be more specific) and because I thought it fits her nicely: her first image color is much calmer compared to the second one, it's like the first color is how other people see her (and how she wants them to see her), but the second color is her real, more violent and aggressive side.

Your art is very beautiful and I really admire your choice of colours . I absolutely admire how you paint the lips and nose. Can you please tell me what you do to give your lips a 3D effect? What do you use first (markers or pastels)?

and thanks for the question, too. It’s made me think hard… So hard that I had to draw something making photos along the way. I’m not very pleased with this drawing but for art’s sake I’m attaching the photo of the process.

I believe that much of the success depends on the first pencil sketch. I use the sharpest side of a pencil lead for the deepest shadows (like a line of a mouth f. e.) and lineart, then, with the broad side of it, I make less dark areas (like the mouth itself + other areas but I was too lazy to draw them carefully on the example). After that I apply bright and light accents with markers (so yes, markers go first) — 2d and 3d steps on the pic (on this stage my drawing looks like a disaster, haha.....). Then I switch to a darker color (4th step, and it looks better!). In the 5th pic I added a dark violet pastel pencil to enhance the contrast and add texture at the same time and also a light salmon pink one to balance colors. Finally, I used oil pastels, not really successfully in that case I could say — it’s always a gamble, you know, at which point you’d f#$k it all up (or not). So, I guess, contrasting colors + different texture + original pencil sketch do the work you’re talking about.
