Third time. This is the third time Rigo spelled his name with a 'q' instead of an 'r'. With time to kill between missions, Roach and Rigo made it their shared goal to fully get the former into the saddle, with the simplest of ASL. They'd been doing really well with texts and scribbles on scratch paper (or important documents, but were Price and Gallagher gonna care? Probably not...) But unlike Reaper, who seemed to pick up both ASL and BSL like it was nothing, her counterpart was struggling a lot more. They'd gone over easy stuff like "hello," "hungry," "bitch," "bacon," and "dick," but it was kind of important for Rigo to know his own name.

Gary inhaled slowly, holding his breath for a second before the Californian sheepishly grinned before him. "Fuck up again?" The Brit shook his head and held up his hands, this time much slower than the last, spelling out the shortened name. "R," "I," "G," "O," before his hands settled. He watched as the American's hands were brought up, a determined frown across his features while the green-eyed man sat with a content look.

Rigo was cute, to say the least. Sun-kissed sepia skin with a million and one freckles, big brown doe eyes that glittered when he looked over at Gary, wavy deep-brown-nearly-black hair cut into a mullet that swept around his cheeks in the most handsome of ways, a big toothy grin to match his harmonious laugh-- not to mention how touchy he was-- yet in a way that understood boundaries. Their first introduction was polite, proper, though, without any physical touch. Standing awkwardly on either side of Laswell, they waited for the rest of the 141 to unload off the plane. The blonde woman had translated a quick back and forth between them, but otherwise, Gary noticed he stayed pretty quiet. That was until Reaper had gotten more comfortable. It appeared that when she warmed up to the team, he did too.

Suddenly, Rigo was everywhere. Usually at his friend's hip, but gradually, he was there helping with unloading, eating with the team, joining in on the post-mission barrack parties (Scrabble and scary movies), and even sitting closer to Roach. Gary'd noticed that the guy would occasionally catch his eye, sending him a sweet smile, before going back to jabbing at Reaper, who he'd sometimes call "Grim," "pendejo," or "puta" (whatever that meant). After a short while, Rigo was starting to greet him with half-hugs, claps on the shoulder, and even reaching over to pick a piece of dust or dirt off Gary's goggles. Maybe it was because he was always around Reaper, or perhaps he was just that nice, but it never seemed to bother him that he was always wearing some sort of covering.

Rigo started to sign "R," crossing the wrong finger over the other, stopping to laugh at his own silliness, then returning to signing the correct "R." Shit, he was really nice to look at. Knees touching on Roach's room's carpet, the only light being the shitty lamp in the corner, Gary watched him form the other letters. For some reason, every time the Californian looked up, it was like he was scanning the exposed features of the Brit. Without goggles, his beautiful eyes could be shown to the world, and boy, did Rigo absolutely relish in that.

On the final letter, "O," Rigo mimicked a handjob motion, giggling again as Gary shoved him a little. Instinct suddenly had him grabbing Rigo's hand, forcing his fingers to pause and move into an 'o' shape. There was a pause, a hitch in Rigo's breath, as they both realized how little space there was between their faces. Quiet and still was the world around them for that moment.

Without pulling away, his voice hardly above a whisper, Rigo asked Gary something that'd been itching at the back of his mind for quite some time now. "Hey, do you know, um," he swallowed, he was cute when he was nervous. "What's the sign for..." Slowly, Rigo's hand rose again. "K," "I," "S--"

Before he could even finish the second 's,' Gary'd pulled down the mask, grabbed his face, and slammed their lips together. The American jumped, squeaking a little in surprise, but melted into his touch, hands dropping to hold Gary's waist. Gary felt Rigo press forward, moving easily together, humming into the paler man. Lips breaking from his bright smile, finally pulling back and catching their breaths, they simply basked in one another's light. Shoulders rising and falling quickly, eyes locked onto each other, studying each other's features for just another few seconds before the American cut back in. "I don't think I understood that fully," he purred, lips curling up to crinkle his eyes. "Mind showing me again?"

it’s ancient greek! it means homecoming, the idea of a triumphant return home for the hero after a long journey. i found it through looking at the root of nostalgia. in this fic of course it’s kind of a grim tongue in cheek play on it. the reader’s coming back to the mountains, but she’s running away after a bad breakup, and the welcome she gets is... shall we say less than ideal haha

First of all as a person who reads monster shit- hell ya. Mhm. That’s some good shit right there. That was DELICIOUS horror. It actually had me a bit nervous and afraid to read what was gonna happen next 😳

ty nonnie!! i didn’t have the right space for it, but after kohsuke was ripped apart and eaten kuroo stayed by the reader’s side until late in the night, only disappearing when he heard the reader’s parents/search party approaching. they found her lying in pools of blood (and scattered half eaten body parts), shaking and unresponsive – they knew no animal could’ve done something like that. so they knew something lurked in those woods, but considering the reader had repressed the memories, her mom couldn’t just come out and say it <33

Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?

I’m not sure anyone is still reading my stories. I haven’t migrated my X-Files ones to AO3. I don’t think Gossamer provides any viewing statistics. I’d be very happy to hear that people still like my work.

What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?

My X-Files fandom experience was amazing. I remember that sense of excitement and immediacy. It was thrilling to write stories (and read those of other authors, of course) in an active fandom for a show that was on the air. It was truly my first experience in an online world--a parallel world to my real life existence. I learned how to keep a foot in each world. As I recall, it was very hard to keep my focus in my “meat” world, when the online one was so fast moving and thrilling. But I did get some balance in my life as time went on.

Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?

Message boards and mailing lists were my experience. They were primitive compared to the pretty screens now. I forged some amazing friendships, some of them with people I discovered lived relatively near me. All I wanted to do was discuss episodes and fic. The flame wars were a little intimidating, but also amusing if you didn’t get swept up.

What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?

I was very passionate about the fandom--as I said, there were times when my online life seemed to overpower my real life experiences. I learned to manage that, and think I’m all the better for that. And I found some amazing friendships that are active and thriving today. I learned a lot about writing with XF fanfic. The level of quality was stunning. A decent percentage of fic were as good or better than traditional published fiction. But there were so many writers! I wanted to make an impact on the fanfiction world, but that meant taking my writing very seriously and learning to develop a story, pace that story, make it compelling and believable.

What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?

I had a couple of coworkers that talked about the show all the time. I was curious, so I watched an episode. I believe it was the cannibal town one. I thought David Duchovny was odd looking and wasn’t terribly impressed. But I tried another episode - Wetwired, which blew me away with the morgue scene when Mulder thinks he’s going to identify Scully’s body. Ah...I thought, now, I see what everyone is talking about! And from then I was hooked.

What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?

As I watched, I wanted more. I was fairly new to the internet (frankly, the internet was new to almost everyone) I found episode reviews, and some of them were fantastic. Some mentioned fanfiction. I was unaware of such a thing, though to be honest, since childhood, I’d been spinning stories in my head about characters on TV shows. I found some fanfic. The first couple of stories were not great (at least one was horrible) but then I found some that were very good. Probably a bit soap-operaish, but still readable. And then I became voracious as I plowed through the mass of stories looking for the good stuff. And boy was there good stuff.

What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?

I’m not estranged from it, but I don’t spend much time with it after all these years. I’ve found fanfic in some other shows that I like and only occasionally read old XF stories.

Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?

I’ve not been as involved with any other fandoms, i.e. following commentary on the show. I tend to dive into TV shows well after their heyday, so I’m always late to the party. I do read fanfic from other shows, and have actually written fanfic for other shows, but I need a really good idea to write. None of the other fandoms for my other shows are as busy and active as XF, even ones currently in production. And none of them have as much fanfic and certainly not the level of brilliance that we had in XF.

Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?

I tend to go for interesting partnerships, very much in the XF fashion. And a flawed hero is always a plus! The partnerships don’t necessarily have to be romantic---in fact I find I prefer those that are not. Really, Mulder and Scully were the only ones I felt deeply as a pairing, probably due to the chemistry between the actors. But the partnerships have to be well-balanced and realistic. I loved the characters on Sleepy Hollow. The two main characters were very much in the mold of Mulder/Scully.

My newest passion is British detective shows and I’ve completely fallen for the “Morse-verse” shows, Inspector Morse, Inspector Lewis and Endeavour. Less of an XF feel, but compelling characters with interesting backstories. Other favorite partnerships in the British detective genre are on Inspector Lynley and Broadchurch.

Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?

A bit less now, though I’m still involved with a wonderful group of ladies who love the X-Files. When we get together for a yearly weekend, we binge episodes and eat impressive amounts of junk food. XF isn’t on network TV these days, but if it was, I’d probably watch it.

A couple of years ago, I listened to Kumail Nanjiani’s XF podcast on my long commute. I loved the commentary and interviews so much that I did watch some old episodes.

Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?

I don’t read much XF fic. I’m currently reading in some other fandoms, but it’s harder to find good stories--the ones I follow aren’t very active these days and the quality just isn’t what XF was. We were so lucky. We had maybe 20 incredible top authors at any one time, then maybe another tier of 50 to 100 good to maybe great writers. And with new episodes, there was so much inspiration. We were so spoiled.

Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?

Everything from Syntax6, MaybeAmanda, Kel. A special story for me was “Strangers and the Strange Dead” by Kipler because I remember reading that very early in the morning in my unheated basement in the winter because that was the only time I could use our single computer without others in the family complaining. I remember actually gasping at the big reveal in the story. I can even remember the story’s opening line!

What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?

I was just learning how to write fiction when I was involved in XF, so I’m not sure my best work is there, though the bulk of my stories are there. I liked some of the work I did with others. I wrote Bone of Contention and Out of the Everywhere with Kel and I think that those stories got the best aspects of both of our styles. For stories I wrote myself, I think they’re not bad, but they are rather short and it’s always easier to maintain a theme and style for a short story. I liked Black Cherry Velvet. I’m writing some Inspector Lewis stories that I think are pretty good--they benefit from the years of experience that I was gaining through XF.

Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?

Never say never, but I probably won’t write more XF. I used to burn with it, but I think that got burned out a bit. Still, I have such wonderful memories of the whole period. It might be worth looking at again.

Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?

As I mentioned, I am currently playing in the Inspector Lewis world. It’s sad--it’s a very small and not terribly active fandom. Sad that my best work is in an inactive fandom where I’m lucky if 20 or 30 people are reading them. It doesn’t help that I don’t write the most popular pairing.

But I’m really enjoying it. I occasionally write for Man From Uncle, which really shows my age, as that was a childhood obsession.

Where do you get ideas for stories?

With XF, it was always a take on an episode--did I get a tiny idea that I wanted to develop, or was I not thrilled with the way something went on the show. Now, it’s usually a “what if” kind of thing where I get inspired by a possible event and explore how that would play out, i.e. “What if this character had a one night stand resulting in an unplanned pregnancy?” What would happen? How would he handle the consequences of this? How would it change his life?

What's the story behind your pen name?

It’s literally my own name. I SOOOO wish I’d used a pen name. But I was naive and fandom was so new to me that it never occurred to me that a pen name would be better. I always told myself that my real name sounded like something made up, like a TV newscaster name, and I hoped people assumed it was a pen name.

Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?

My husband and my kids were the only ones who knew about it for many years. Then I went to a fandom/fic gathering for three days and had to explain to a few other family members and my work mates why I was going to Chicago on my own. It’s still mostly a need to know thing and they don’t really need to know.

Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?

I’m on AO3 as msk. And everything I wrote for XF is on Gossamer.

I haven’t been very active here lately (autumn cleaning and other adulting things) so it is really great I found this (old) tag - thank you @bluebellraven

1. What's a book that you recommend most often?

I don’t think I have a “go-to” book to recommend, because people and circumstances are very different. On tumblr, I think I recommended the Touchstone trilogy (starting with The Various) by Steve Augarde a lot because I think it does not get the recognition it deserves.

2. A memory that makes you smile?

Soooo many. Pretty much always when I think of my cats. Or travelling with my sister.

3. What music do you like listening to?

A lot of 90s and early 2000 (”music from my youth”). Plus Beatles. Apart from a wild mix of single songs, on the USB drive I listen to most of the times are all the Beatles albums, all (?) of the Scissor Sisters albums, Wir Sind Helden and Snow Patrol.

4. Favourite movie/show to watch with friends?

I love watching cartoons and anime with my sister, such as The Dragon Prince and ATLA, the Gibhli movies but also Dirk Gently and Umbrella Academy (obscure fantasy-mystery series you can talk about for hours afterwards). And we recently started the extended Lord of the Rings movies which is really great to watch together and disclaim whenever something new comes up.

(Do you know Netflix Party? It’s an extension to google chrome. You can watch Netflix shows with several people, each person from their own home but the show is streamed simultaneously. I love it)

5. What is the last book that you've read and what did you think of it?

I just decided to finish “4 Räder, Küche, Bad” by Fredy Gareis (a play on the German way of advertising flats: 4 rooms, kitchen, bathroom - but rooms exchanged for wheels). It tells about the decision of F. Gareis and his partner to move out of their flat and into a car, driving around Germany and working from their car/going to the places to work (they are writer and journalist, respectively). It was meh. Somehow the story didn’t stick with me, it seemed like he never touched on things of interest for me or that resonate with me. Therefore, I decided to stop.

6. Cat person or dog person?

Do you need to ask ;-)

7. Do you remember your dreams when you wake up?

Sometimes. Recently, mostly those I have of my work. Not fun.

8. What is the funniest book that you've read?

All books by Marc-Uwe Kling (I think Qualityland has also been translated, though it is not so much laugh-out-loud funny but cynical-funny. His books about living with a communist kangoroo is mostly laugh-out-loud)

9. Favourite food?

Depends on my mood. But cake is nearly always welcome.

10. What are you reading right now?

I am in between books. I think I will pick up City of Brass again. Or the last book of The Mirror Visitor quartet by Christelle Dabos. Or “Zuück in Sommerby” by Kristen Boie (middle grade book with strong Astrid Lindgren vibes).

Okay so, every thursday my goddamn dormmates go to party and they're very loud so when they come home no one can sleep, even if we tell them to shut tf up and I was going home on the next day so I was pretty annoyed by them bc of all that. I joked to him about getting me out of there bc I'm so mad(him and the others were out drinking but I didn't wanna go bc I got my monthly problem that day) and he asked me to go there so I did(I mean, I'd rather be with them than listening to my stupid dormmates). When we were going home he didn't want to bc his roommates would kill him for arriving so late so I might have offered him to sleep in my room and he might have asked me to sleep in the same bed fjdbfjfnf I did say no tho bc my bed is really small and there's no way we would have had enough place there soooo that's the tea fkdbfkfk(and f u tumblr for deleting my ask)(on side note, I dyed my hair blue and when I sent him the picture he said that it's good and asked me why am I sending him pictures of pretty strangers and I said that maybe he'd like one of them) - shortie anon

SoooO I became obsEsSED with these two

so I've decided tooo write some HC's I've thinking about!!! also, in this blog we support nb Roguefort.

When Roguefort goes to "work" Sparkling feels a lot of anxiety and can't fall asleep until he arrives

In everyday life situations Roguefort annoys Sparkling with silly pickup lines, ending in a war, who wins gets the kiss!

but none wants to accept the defeat

When Sparkling is working at a party and sees his beloved, he looks at them like an idiot and when they finally meet their eyes they begin to wink without stopping almost trying to decipher what his intention is FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM

The work of both ends late in the night, so their "moments of love" are usually in the day

I say day because they sleep all morning and Roguefort doesn't plan to let him get up earlier

Sparkling internally fears that his lover will be imprisoned, he thinks that their work it's too risky and could not bear his absence

Roguefort doesn't want to have a serious relationship with Sparkling because of the fear of being involved in a crime in which he is not involved even though they basically live together

Roguefort often compares their jewels with Sparkling's smile and eyes

Sparkling falls very easily for they, probably met them because also tried to steal his stuff

Roguefort speaks while sleep and sometimes makes Sparkling freak out

Some nights Sparkling agrees to go for a walk with them and observe the lights of the city while they talk about meaningless things or judge people they know just for fun

I have a physics exam tomorrow and I don't know anythiNG but here am I 2AM posting stuff at tumblr where I have like 6 followers

Some Blind Things I (and actual blind person) Have Done

I talk all the time about what’s realistic for a blind person to do and how to write a blind character who isn’t a complete media myth of touching faces and super powers... soooo, part of that is knowing what kind of things an actual blind person (me) fucks up doing because I’m blind.

These moments include: Me sarcastically telling people I cannot see the thing they’re doing. Moments where I have zero manners. Moments where I do have manners. Making people uncomfortable because they’re staring at me. Great phrases like, “I have too much ADHD to count to eight.” and “It’s literally illegal for me to drive.” and “Wait, who are you?” “That’s not how we talk to people Mimzy.” My cats’ growing concern that I can’t see them or tell them apart but continuing to love me. Channeling my inner Toph Bei-Fong. Updates on the ongoing insomnia writing.

There’s no chronological order to them, I’m not sure there’s going to be any order to them at all, but it’s 3 am and I can’t sleep and it’s called the Late Night Writing Advice Blog for a reason.

(I definitely did not have to double check my own blog title while typing that, definitely not)

Note: This list gets a little long, but it’s a funny read and I was up until 4:30 (this note is from a future Mimzy who’s almost finished posting this, after 1.5 hours)

The Things!

-My best friend and I hang out mostly at night because of his 9-5 job, and he still lives with his parents who probably don’t like me so when we hang out we’re mostly driving around on random adventures and coffee/tea runs and late night dinners.

So it’s night, and my night vision is awful and I have to wear sunglasses anyway because what I can see is painfully bright headlights so yeah I see basically nothing.

With my best friend, I have

1. after asking him a question: “Did you nod at me and I just didn’t see it.” “I did nod.” or after waiting long enough for a response he’ll realize what he did on his own and say, “I was shaking my head no, sorry.”

2. Reaching into total darkness to touch his shoulder and touched his armpit instead.

3. Dropped something from my bag onto his messy car floor and asked him to find it for me because it all looks blurry and grey-black down there, even without sunglasses

4. Sensed he was going for a high five and I gave him a perfect high five. Surprised, he wanted to test it again. I completely missed.

5. “We’re passing the oil refinery, so enjoy hearing, touching, smelling, tasting that.” plus 3 other identical jokes on the same drive. “Hey, can you stop making blind jokes, I’m starting to hate them these days.” “When did that happen?” “When one not-great classmate slash sort of friend made them all the time.” “That’s a shame.” “Blind jokes from sighted people are also super repetitive. The only blind jokes I seem to like are from other blind people.”

6. Him: “You’re rolling your eyes behind your sunglasses, I can tell!”

7. Once we saw snow once our way driving home from Las Vegas. It was March, it was after midnight, and the warmest it had been at any point in that night was 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 degrees Celsius. That’s a real comparison?? That’s a scary number to an American who’s barely ever left California. We were driving through the mountainy area of California where the temp really drops and for three seconds we saw snow in the wind. Well, he saw it. Something moved, it was small and flaky but like... that was actually snow and I couldn’t see it? (this was three, almost four years ago)

8. Last weekend we drove around the rich neighborhoods to look at Christmas decorations because I love Christmas lights because for ones light actually looks pretty instead of painful and I can see it at night without hurting, so it’s nice. I love the pretty visual things. Blindness will not take the pretty visual things from me! And the decorations just make me so happy and I wanted to do that last year but never did, so we did that this year

9. I also told him about the cripple punk tag on Tumblr last weekend and he was delighted to know it exists because he’s got other chronic health issues including downright awful knees.

Other blind things not directly involving my best friend

1. I have paused writing to ask a sighted person if it’s realistic for my sighted characters to see X item from Y distance away. Usually my dad with his stupidly perfect vision.

2. Realizing I’m forgetting what sighted people can see. It’s been four years since I saw like a normal person. And all my sighted memories are literally blurry from age.

3. But I still have dreams where I see normally. And then dreams where everything is too bright like in real life and I cannot see and what is happening???

At home, specifically

1. I have three cats who I can’t tell the difference between. I have a small black and brown tabby cat. A black and orange tortie cat who is slightly heavy but medium build. An all black cat who is huge and has the longest fur I’ve ever touched on a cat. I cannot tell the difference between them until I’m up close. Especially if the lighting bad.

2. Tonight I almost set my laptop on top of Remy, my brown and black tabby, because I didn’t see here a foot away from me, curled up next to my leg, somehow blending in with my orange and blue comforter. Her concerned look I did see and was horrified by my almost fuck up and apologized profusely for.

3. Cannot see Felix, my black cat, half the time if the lighting is bad and have almost sat on him, put my feet in his face, tripped over him, etc. because he blends into the shadows and oh my fucking god I cannot see that.

Note: Remy cuddles with me all the time. Felix adores me but will not be caught dead cuddling anyone because dignity, but if he’s in my room and nobody’s around to see he’s insistent on cuddling. Rio (black and orange tortie) is devoted to my mum, and she knows she makes me nervous when she suddenly jumps on me and I get really shifty and squirmy and not fun to cuddle with, so we’re cool and I give her pets but she doesn’t usually crawl onto me unless she wants to make my mum jealous.

4. Can sneak up on family members and friends because I move so quietly, so at least there’s that. Not a blind thing, but it makes up for some things.

5. Have walked up to someone I thought was a friend, realized I don’t know them, and the first thing out my mouth was “Wait, who are you?” and then a close friend (and the party host) grab me by the shoulders and say, “That’s not how we talk to people,” and just like, where are your manners Mimzy, wtf, but I never saw that stranger again so it’s okay.

Side Note: blindness aside, I do have a habit of just rudely speaking my mind in not-appropriate settings because I just don’t care and don’t have the anxiety to at least act like I care. They’re very satisfying, but usually very rare moments.

6. Please stop moving things around the house!

7. “What do you mean there are cobwebs?” *Shines a flashlight at the dark corners of my room* “oh my god...”

8. Me, to my family members, “Please close those curtains, light hurts. Please turn off that lamp, it’s too bright in here.” *me, later turns off most of the lights in the house* Family members: “Why is it so dark in here? I can’t see.” *Me, channeling my inner Toph Bei-Fong* “Oh no, what a tragedy!”

9. Mum is the only one who vaguely appreciates my light sensitivity because she also has snow vision (a mild case) and has a little light sensitivity, sometimes, on her bad days.

More Not Quite Appropriate Things!

There are so many things that I say only to realize that there is a very nearby stranger who heard that out of context and it sounded so bad.

1. Best Friend (while I’m walking down stairs just fine, by myself, don’t need anyone’s help, I can do it!) “There are eight steps.” “I don’t need your help.” “I know but--” “I’m fine!” “I’m just trying to help.” “I have too much ADHD to count to eight anyway!”

“I have too much ADHD to count to eight anyway,” is exactly what two strangers heard while walking right behind me.

Why would you sneak up on someone who’s so obviously blind??

2. “Sea foam green is an ugly color anyway.” I was in a mall, it was well lit and I was using my cane and managing with my crap vision, but I managed to see that specific color I hate on a dress right next to me, and the woman walking on the other side of the mannequin display heard that and did a double take on my obviously blind self.

Or so I’m told by my mom who could see what happened.

3. Similar to above, I was in the Artist Village in San Diego, which is a huge tourist trap, and I was sort of a tourist too, but it’s freaking outdoors, so I have the cane and sunglasses. And I’m in an Artist Village (very visual thing) with my parents, so out of place. And this random dude was apparently staring at me. Cannot see him, absolutely no idea which direction my mum is pointing towards, everything is blank and weird and not see-able, but I turned my head and by some miracle looked directly at him and he freaked out and looked away.

4. “Oh yeah, make fun of the blind person!” sarcastically, but loudly, somewhere public after a joke a friend had made that I was actually okay with.

5. “Driving and hiking are my two biggest weaknesses,” said out of context to people who didn’t know I was blind.

7. “Why can’t you drive?” *points to cane* *he does not get it* “It’s very illegal for me to drive.” *does not get it* “They’re blind dude,” classmate says. “Very blind.” “You seem to get around just fine,” says the man who only see me indoors with the very best lighting scenario for my vision. “Yeah, but that’s because I have the cane.” “So?” You seem just fine, he seems to think. How dumb are you? I definitely think. “Why do you need the cane?” “Because I would die if I didn’t have it. I have almost died. People would die if I tried to drive.”

8. Later: “Did he think you could just drive and use your cane to feel the road or something?” “I guess.”

9. More questions from other people who don’t know me very well asking why I can’t drive. “Because it’s illegal.” Their confusion is wondering specifically why it’s illegal rather than thinking I’m not actually blind. I explain the laws in the driving handbook, because I have read it (unlike some people I guess. How did you miss the ‘drivers must be able to see at least 20/40 with their best corrected eye” and I haven’t been in that category for two years.

Note: My day blindness came two years before my vision acuity reached visually impaired status. So, like, two years of wishing I had a cane but thinking “I’m not blind enough” and still being terrified in certain situations and risking my life walking around without one or some sighted guide.

I can see indoors pretty well so I get by on prescription glasses and no cane (I see 20/70 - 20/100 with glasses) but sometimes the mall is crowded and nobody gives me space and I’m just not comfortable getting so close to people, so I bust out my cane (and maybe my sunglasses too) so I look extra blind and people will give me the space to walk without running into someone.

2. Have also done that just because the indoor lights were also too bright and I need my sunglasses.

3. Have stared at my phone in public with cane/sunglasses, or tried taking photos with it, and I get so many weird looks because blind people see nothing I guess, none of us have any vision at all! (read sarcasm)

4. Walking into a coffee shop I’ve been to before and I know they change their teas all the freaking time. Also got the cane. “Hi, can you tell me what iced teas you have right now?” “Oh, they’re all on that sign.” *blank look* Do you not realize I’m blind? I’m thinking. “What kind of black tea do you have? Do you have any tropical black tea?” (because they usually do and I love tropical black tea, and they did that day too, so I ordered that.)

5. I cannot read menus. Those restaurants that have the menus above the register are awful, evil. Cannot read. In the wonderful days of my childhood I didn’t have prescription glasses for my moderately not great but still mostly functional vision (my dad has perfect vision and no concept whatsoever about what it’s like to not be able to see those things!) So imagine my parents dragging me to restaurants like that and I’m 10 years old and supposedly can read perfectly fine but I cannot read that menu and I think it’s some personal character fault of mine that I just don’t know how to read those kinds of menus, so I have to ask my mum to help me choose a food to order and eat, and then that’s the only thing I ever order any time I ever go back. So, I’m quickly getting sick of those places because I only eat one item there and I want to try something new with a restaurant with those nice hand held menus, but those are sit-down restaurants and apparently they cost more money, sooo...

6. That was a rant I went on with my best friend last weekend

Side note: It’s almost 4 am, my mum just woke up, saw the light on in my room from under the crack of my door and said hi. I’m at a point right now where she just expects it and isn’t one to judge (unlike my dad who has zero insomnia because he has hypersomnia and I don’t know how humans do that)

Side Note Ten Minutes Later: My laptop is at 10% but I plugged it in because dammit I am finishing this tonight and it will have all the things.

7. “Hey, where’s the trash can? I can’t find one.” *also mistakes a trashcan and a human being just sitting still. All the time* “Why not just litter then?” best friend asks, knowing exactly how I’ll respond. “I have manners!”

8. I hate traveling even a little by myself. My orientation and mobility skills with my cane aren’t that bad, but they’re not good enough for me to feel comfortable walking around by myself anywhere that isn’t super familiar with routes I already have practiced and memorized (school, close friend’s houses or apartments, the blocks in my neighborhood I’ve walked 500 times coming too and from school or walking dogs with my parents). Anywhere unfamiliar or wide/open or crowded or God Forbid, OUTSIDE is a source of terror and will not let my traveling companions leave me alone for longer than a few minutes and certainly not walk away on my own.

9. Will not go to bars because I present female and I am visibly disabled and that makes me look like an easy target and why would I risk that unnecessarily?

amora’s mother was a spring witch and her father was a summer witch. to their delight, ami was born a spring witch just like her mother. however, ami would later realize this was not as good as it seemed

her mother was a midwife and she wanted nothing more than for amora to follow in her footsteps. unfortunately, amora never had any interest in midwifery

during amora’s teen years, her parents started arguing frequently about the direction they wanted amora to go in. her mother was set on midwifery, but her father understood the importance of choosing your own future. aside from arguing about amora, her parents stopped seeing eye to eye on many other things as well, and eventually they split up

amora did not handle her parents split well. mostly, she blamed herself. she feels like if she had just pursued midwifery like her mother had wanted, none of this would have happened

after the split, she had to live with her disapproving mother. her father not only moved out, but he moved to a different city to be around some of his family. this kind of broke her heart a lil. she saw it more as her father trying to stay far away from her

so, amora continued living with her mom who continued to disapprove of her choices. for a while, she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do. however, after her parents divorce, she became especially interested in matchmaking

she figured since she drove her parents apart, she could redeem herself by bringing others together. she quickly became obsessed with the idea of love

amora more recently found out her father remarried and started a new family. she doesn’t really speak to him much anymore, so the idea that he is present in the lives of his new family hurts her a lot. but in the end, she still blames herself for driving her father away

so, amora has a father she barely sees and a mother who continues to try to micro-manage her life and make a carbon copy of herself out of her daughter
