          Iann’s glass gently tapped against Tuah’s as the sound rang through the dank and dark room they all rested in, silencing the parties mutterings and gossiping. Assortments of candy and sweets that could rot ones teeth from the outside in had insects crawling about, hidden by the darkness with occasional scatterings illuminated by the moons light that loomed through large and worn windows. Decorations hung in shades of navy while roses stems sat in jars for the birthday girl was spending her first of many with the collective, away getting ready with the stylish nymph that insisted he would dress her properly for the evenings sinister celebrations.

           “A toast,” Iann announced, looking out at those who were their, seated or stood about the room with those they had been muttering with. His voice strong and commanding of the situation, as did his deeply coloured mustache that was thick as his mind could often be. “To the glorious mysteries of life. To all that binds a family as one,” he insisted. Perhaps they were not family by blood but they were family by choice and love, even hate in some instances as Iann noticed the faerie male seated stoically at the piano while Bella stood on the other side of the room holding her glass high in hand. 

          His attention returning to that of everyone he proceeded. “To mirth, to merriment, to manslaughter,” he continued, the room filling with a soft and bemused laughter. Each person raised their own glass and a few agreed with a ‘here, here’ that was lost amongst the laughter and the small amount of clapping that came with it. What kind of town would Soapberry be if not for the occasional death to those who were not worthy of it’s embrace only rivaled perhaps by someone trying to choke you to death.

          “To dear friends,” Iann engaged, rising his glass to Faye and her partner Fane with her child in lap. While Faye sat with a mother’s posture, shoulders slightly slumped as she tried to stay awake at such a late hour, in her white dress and pearls that sat tightly against her neck her she sipped on a glass of deep burgundy coloured wine. The lace on the white dress partially stained by what one could assume was the wine, were one stupid enough to think so. Fane to her side had been speaking much like someone had autotuned a teacher in Charlie Brown, no words coming out. It had been Ephram’s idea and everyone in the room with abilities had rather agreed they’d prefer the inane screeching they couldn’t understand to his incidental boasting. Still Faye smiled as Fane leaned in, completely unaware of the enchantment that Eowyn in her lap enjoyed.

           “To new friends,” Iann followed, eyes shifting to Nuadia in a long black suit that hung from their bones and her companion Jaewon who matched them almost completely except they had a distressed shirt beneath. Their close embrace causing Iann to give them a sinister wink as his own glass bubbled and frothed. At his wink and gaze Nuadia smiled, their own turning to Jaewon with a giggle at their lips. A clink of their own glasses came, like Iann’s they frothed but something Nuadia had done made them drip with a black and gooey glitter, and Jaewon looked back with his own kind of hungry eyes. The two had been embracing for practically the whole evening, completely and utterly absorbed in one another. Each word they spoke sweet but savage all at once.

           “To youth,” Iann’s next gush came, eyes following to Bellamy. His prized child even if she was not such held the glass of thickest red, lips stained with it as she looked back at him, focused on the man speaking rather than the man beside her. Yet Miles looked at her, watched as Bella raised her glass. Her body was hugged tightly by a slim black dress making every light that hit her exaggerate what was going on beneath. Did she wear things with the specific purpose of taunting him? Especially as there was no one there that evening he could leave with, most people paired up from the looks of things.

           It was only when Miles spoke her golden eyes flickered over to him. “How do I look?” he questioned. He had grown a mustache over his plump lips in contest with Iann and Bella had found that it did not suit him, the look as awful as an evening at Chuck-E-Cheese would be. Yet even with it Bellamy found herself reaching out and touching the lapel of the deep navy suit she had put him in just earlier that day, his shirt black and form fitting as Bellamy had been the one to pick it. “Disturbing,” she answered. Why he thought looking like the man she imagined as her father would work for him she would not understand.

         “To passion,” Iann began to finish, turning his eyes to his darling date. Like Miles he had been stuffed by Bellamy into a tight black shirt, buttons pulling over his muscles and Iann wanted to just rip the goddamn thing off him and expose the tan and tight body he had beneath. “To paradise,” Tuah responded with an accent thicker than he generally had in public. “To pain,” Iann said, glass rising higher and his hand extending to Tuah’s form oblivious to those around them. “Tonight,” Tuah insisted with an unusually confident smirk. Iann could not stop himself, leaning into his immortal lover so he could taste the ominous drink on his lips.

        A bemused and self indulgent laugh game from the door as Teddy caught the gesture Iann and Tuah intended to make in front of everyone who most certainly had no interest in seeing it. “Make way for the birthday girl,” Teddy announced as he stepped out of the way of the door. Following him Ephram came in, a deep blue cake looking like an aggressive sea on a trolley before him. Like every other person in there he wore a deep black suit but the first five buttons had been undone, much to Teddy’s displeasure as he had repeatedly tried to do them up while each had been waiting on different things. Teddy on the girl and Ephram on the cake.

        Once Ephram was out of the way though Elena stepped through in a glittering royal blue gown. It hung from her flesh like netting might hang off a caught fish. Amongst the layered fishnet that made it up was gemstones in large and small sizes. The girls long hair pooled over her shoulders but showed her defined and tan colour bones. Teddy had done well getting her into the contraption Bella had bought but could not get her into the heels so her painted toes stuck out from beneath it. The soles of her feet were dusty in the old home they had thrown her celebration in but Elena did not care because all eyes were on her. Everyone had come there to celebrate her first birthday on the surface.

        “Kit, will you do the honours,” Nuadia said, looking towards the animal that had been lurking at their feet. The animal seemed to look at them with a distasteful gaze as he knew he could not light a cake a cakes candles. Instead he merely removed himself from her feet and went to Elena’s, Ephram taking on the job of lighting the cake before taking a seat beside his beloved who had been fairly ignored until Ephram’s return as he’d been avoiding conflict with the vampire as much as Bella had with him.

        With the companionship of his witch Freddie began to play ‘Happy Birthday’ woefully on the piano. No one sang, instead watching as Elena lit up at the prospect of candles and Teddy explained the human process of them and the wish she could make. Her glee was enough to make every feel wonderfully dreadful.

FEH - af1899 talks about Ninja Shamir and Summer Tana's refine

Hey there.

First of all, my apologies for the late coming on my previous blog entry, I've been kind of busy at the time and uhhh, after that, thought I'd might as well wait for the event information reveal then went to sleep and had more things to do. Anyway, it's a pre-datamine thoughts and reactions post, so there might not be much of interest by now, but I hope it's your liking.

Anyway...

With the software 5.11.0 and the datamine rolling out, here are my thoughts and plans for the two units that catch my interest in the update, plus a little commentary on what we've gotten in refines, everything after the cut!

Summer Tana

Originally, this weapon wasn't so interesting, it just provided mobility to nearby allies if Tana was healthy enough (HP ≥ 50% of MHP), but the refine came to correct that, her base effect improves so that its [Guidance]-esque effect works all the time, she gets a base stat boost and she gets offensive boosts during battle of her target foe is healthy enough, plus the same added effect as [Scattered Fangs] Nino, offering [Joint Drive Atk] and [Joint Drive Spd] at once.

I think this is a good refine: simple, useful and flexible; it does, however, come with that "foe's HP ≥ 75%" requirement I have never liked, it's too specific and makes me think I.S. assumes we can consistently ORKO foes with a unit released over three years ago, but without at least enough support, ORKOing foes all/most of the time isn't as easy as it sounds. Fortunately, it's required only for an extra boost on attack and speed +4 during battles, but is still kind of annoying.

Anyway, I've revamped my build on Summer Tana, so here's the new and improved version:

It's not an outstanding build, but I do think that her situation improved considerably compared to last time I've shown her, when clearing Legendary Julia's limited abyssal map, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

[Ward Fliers] is a placeholder, I'm afraid to mention I don't have much else of use.

Ninja Shamir

While I'm not as excited for her as I was with Summer Tana's refine, I was still pleasantly surprised to read official confirmation on Shamir's new alt, as a free unit no less!

PenekoR has drawn her artwork this time, and goodness, this is absolutely gorgeous. For starters, the effects and color palette of her uniform blend wonderfully, and some parts of the uniform itself draw from her original clothes, like her jacket. The drawings feel carefully well done down to every detail, it can be hard to believe at first she's a free unit too.

The quotes don't leave room for disappointment, either. Although she displays a cold and distant personality, this is most likely due to her role as a ninja, which has other demands compared to her job as a knight of Seiros, plus she takes her job seriously and wants to make a living out of being a mercenary of sorts. Now, I'm not fully acquainted with her characterization in Fire Emblem: Three Houses since I could never finish it, but I do know a few things about her, including what has happened back on her homeland 10 years ago prior to the game's events, but I'm not going to explain anything after this in this post to avoid spoilers.

Anyway, talking about her gameplay elements, her statline ahs been revealed through datamining, that it's going to be:

MHP: 42

ATT: 37

SPD: 40 <super asset>

DEF: 31 <super flaw>

RES: 32

BST: 182

And well... as you can see, basically slightly improved Ninja Hana, with the exception of the [Shuriken Cleaver+], which can be considered a "sidegrade", as it trades speed for power, it can't also be refined like the other inheritable seasonal weapons in this update, but that makes sense I suppose. She comes pre-built to be an offensive unit, with a very workable speed that easily becomes her overall best boon, not just for the super asset, but also because it works with a myriad of builds that go along with her statline so well, this includes defensive builds with {damage reduction} B-skills and [Unbound Axe+], to give you an example, as her bulk is pretty usable... actually, you should use it, unless you really want to make of her an offensive unit, which is fine.

This is what I like on both Shamir and Hana: their statlines are flexible and you could easily go in one of several directions with them. For example, I thought I'd do this for Shamir:

Just a tanking build of sorts, could potentially pair her up with Brave Lucina occasionally, but it looks pretty fun to use, even on its own, I'd also consider [Rouse Atk/Spd 3] for sure, but I tend to like {Joint Drive} skills so I just slapped it on the build. 🙃

Overall though, I'm pretty satisfied with Ninja Shamir, and I can't wait to build her! She's going to be an interesting project like Hana and Summer Adult Tiki, indeed.

About the other refines

This time, I'll just briefly talk about the refines I didn't cover, here's the picture that PM1 assembled to put all refines in one place (source: his Reddit thread):

After looking at every refine, I can tell how everyone was treated nicely in one way or another, Kaze can fire faster and stronger special skills, Kliff is bulkier and now has access to his own [Guard] instance, Legendary Marth is an even better stat stacking beast, blah blah blah...

It's indeed a solid batch with the Legendaries being clearly standing out with brand new refines that gives them new purpose and significantly improved performance to whoever was already investing on them, the others didn't feel particularly lacking either.

“The Sickening Proof” || YEAR 3 – Ch.37 (HP au)

A/N: This is my first fan fic I’m writing mainly as a way to practice. This is a retelling of the hp books with an inserted character. Although most every character will be written about, this is mostly for the pro snape fandom. Please do not fear, although this is a severus x oc story, it is an incredibly slow burn as I do not intend for them to get together at all until after the final book events. Chapters will be posted twice a week.

This derivative work follows the events of the Harry Potter books by Jk Rowling and is intended as a fun way to practice my writing. Thank you for reading :D

Snape might as well have been a terrifying shrieking shack ghost. He certainly got the right type of reaction from everyone.

Hermione let off a loud, shrill scream. Lupin jumped a foot in the air and turned. Harry went white as a sheet, though not as white as Ron. Sirius Black whirled so fast Heather thought he’d make himself puke. She just stared, dumb-founded at her Head of House for not only catching them out after hours, but outside of Hogwarts grounds after hours and outside of Hogsmeade visits. Maybe she’d be the one puking.

Snape moved slowly in a hunched crouch, inching towards Lupin as he aimed at his heart, arm fully extended and unwavering. He was a predator ready to strike and it stilled the air around them. “Thank you, Potters, for leaving the cloak behind for me. It came very useful.”

As still and calculated as Snape looked, he spoke from breaths. Heather could see it was a great struggle to contain his look of triumph, though she could still see it plainly in his eyes.

“Not expecting me, Lupin?” Snape’s eyes glittered as he continued to hold their silent attention perfectly. “You’d forgotten to take your Potion tonight, Lupin – not surprising considering how relentlessly unreliable you prove to be. And… like the responsible dog-sitter I am… I took a gobletful along with me to your office. How very lucky was I, that there, open on your desk, was a certain map.”

Snape’s eyes flickered to Harry and Heather for a second, letting them know they never had him fooled. Heather swallowed and began to shiver with fear. Surely, this was their last year attending Hogwarts… whether they made it through tonight or not.

“One glance,” Snape continued, “and I knew everything I needed to know. I saw you run along the passage and out of sight.”

Lupin licked his lips and began speaking with a quiver. “Severus – ”

“I’ve told the Headmaster again. And again,” Snape spat the words out like venom. “That you’ve been the one helping Black into the castle. And here’s the proof. If only I had guessed you’d be using this old place as your hideout – Only I never dreamed you’d have the nerve.”

“Severus, you’re making a mistake,” Lupin held his hand down and out, as if trying to physically lower Snape’s anger. “You haven’t heard it all – I can explain everything – Sirius was never going to kill Harry or Heather – ”

“I’ll be the one to call and let them know they’ll be needing TWO cells in Azkaban tonight.” Snape’s eyes gleamed fanatically. “I shall be interested to see how Dumbledore takes this… He was quite convinced you were harmless… A tame werewolf – ”

Lupin shook his head and took a step back. “You fool…” he said softly. “Would you really put an innocent man back in Azkaban over a schoolboy grudge – ”

BANG!

Thin, green, snakelike cords shot out from the tip of Snape’s ready wand and wrapped themselves around Lupin’s head, shutting his mouth tight. More twisted themselves around Lupin’s wrists and ankles, unbalancing him and knocking him to the floor. He fell with a heavy thump and groaned.

Black growled furiously and started to lunge at Snape. Snape snapped his wrist to Black and held his wand tip right between Sirius Black’s eyes, stopping him mid motion.

“Give me a reason,” Snape whispered. “Give me a reason to do it, and I swear I will.”

Heather didn’t doubt for a second that whatever it was, Snape really would do it. Nor did she doubt, that at the first chance Sirius Black saw, he’d turn into that horrible dog and rip Snape’s throat out in one quick tear. It was plainly obvious to her, that in the presence of one another, they were only both still alive by some miracle.

“Professor,” Heather whispered, trembling.

He did not take his eyes off Black. She looked around and saw Hermione pressing her hands to her mouth and turned away. Harry stood frozen, looking wide-eyed between Lupin and Snape. Ron was looking even paler and was sweating as he continued to struggle with Scabbers in his grip.

She turned back to the terrifying display of lethal hatred Snape and Black were somehow managing to rein in and remembered Professor Trelawney’s words. Tonight was the night Voldemort’s servant would return to him, and Sirius Black was the only one so far accused, no matter how much Lupin was trying to convince them of his innocence.

Hermione creaked along the floorboard to Heather, steady, so as to not make either man jump or flinch at the noise. “Professor Snape – m-maybe – it wouldn’t hurt to listen to them – to what they’re trying to explain?”

“You four are already facing certain expulsion from this school,” Snape spat. “Not only, but also currently in the presence of a convicted murderer and a werewolf. For once in your LIVES – hold, your tongues – however hard that might BE, Granger.”

“B-but i-if – if there was a mistake – ”

“SILENCE, YOU STUPID GIRL!” Sparks were sizzling out of the end of Snape’s wand as he seethed, looking very deranged. “DON’T TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND!”

Black did not seem to flinch at the threat of Snape’s attack, still waiting for an opening with deadly patience. Hermione fell silent and stepped back.

“Vengeance is very sweet,” Snape breathed. “I did hope I would be the one to catch you…”

Black forced a laugh that deepened Snape’s glare. “Joke’s on you again. Severus. As long as this boy takes his rat up to the castle I’ll come quietly.”

Snape’s mouth twitched up in amusement. “The castle?” he said silkily. “We won’t need to go that far… All I have to do is call the dementors once we get out of the Willow. They’ll be so pleased. They’ve been so eager to see you, Black… I wonder how long they would hold off on giving you their long-awaited kiss… Seconds? Minutes perhaps?”

Sirius Black’s color went from grey-white to egg-white at the mention. “Severus – You’ve got to hear me out,” he croaked. “The rat – look at the rat – ”

Heather stared into Snape’s eyes, wondering to see if the man’s desperate pleas would change anything in Snape’s certainty, but all she could see was a mad glint she’d never seen in anyone before.

Snape snapped his fingers and the ends of Lupin’s serpent-y ropes flew to his hands. “Come on. All of you. I’ll drag the werewolf. Perhaps the dementors will have a kiss for him too.” His eyes flicked to Heather. “Potter. Open the door.”

Heather nodded, hoping beyond hope that this was all the prophecy working itself out correctly. She edged passed Sirius Black and put a hand on the doorknob. She looked down and twisted it, but before it could open even a centimeter, a body had rammed into her and the door had slammed shut.

She looked up at Harry with shock.

“Get out of the way, Potter. You’re in enough trouble as it is,” he snarled. “If I hadn’t been here to save your skin – ”

“But Professor Lupin could have killed me about a hundred times this year! I’ve been alone with him loads of times – same with Heather. If he was working with Black, why didn’t he finish us off then?”

He had a point, maybe that truly wasn’t the intention…

“I wouldn’t fathom to understand the way a werewolf’s mind works,” Snape hissed. “Now get out of the way, Potter.”

Or maybe all Black wanted was to make sure he knew where the boy who defeated his master was. So that when he went back to Voldemort, he could tell him everything. Then Lupin wouldn’t have needed to kill them at all. He would have only needed to help Black hide until the day he needed to return…

“Harry,” Heather shoved him away hard, making him stumble back. “Sirius Black was Voldemort’s servant and he still is! Please… We’ll all just leave and go back to the castle and nothing bad will happen tonight, alright? Please?”

Harry looked at her, and back down to Lupin, up at Black, and finally back at Snape. After a moment, he took his place at the door again. “No.”

“Potter,” Snape gave a warning growl. “I will not listen to you or these – ”

“YOU’RE PATHETIC!” Harry staggered forward with the weight of his words. He meant it with all his being. “JUST BECAUSE THEY MADE A FOOL OF YOU AT SCHOOL YOU WON’T LISTEN – ”

“QUIET! I WILL NOT BE SPOKEN TO LIKE THAT!” Snape looked like he’d had enough of everything. The sparks started up again on the ends of his wand like a frayed wire ready to start a large uncontrollable fire. “Like father, like son, Potter! I’ve just saved your neck; you should be thanking me on hands and knees! You would have been well served if he’d killed you! You’d have died like your father, too arrogant to believe you might be mistaken in Black – Now get out of my way, or I. Will. Make. You. GET OUT OF THE WAY POTTER!”

Before Heather could think she raised her wand, and at the same time as Harry yelled ‘Expelliarmus,’ she yelled “Flipendo!” right at Snape’s heaving chest, putting all of her pain and anger into the words.

Both Harry and Heather’s spells blasted out of their wands and hit Snape square in his chest, lifting him off the ground and sent him flying onto the wall with a thunderous thump. He fell onto the bed below him, making Ron dive for the floor. Snape’s wand had been blasted out of his hand and landed with a rolling click down at Harry’s feet.

Heather was at the bed in an instant, checking to see if Snape was alive. There was a trickle of blood oozing from under his hair. She gasped and pressed her hands to her mouth. She was shaking, trembling so hard she might have fallen if she wasn’t kneeling on the bed besides Snape’s still body.

Sirius Black gave a quick, victorious laugh that snapped Heather back into the moment.

“Don’t worry. He’s only knocked out.” Black glanced at Ron and back at Harry and Heather. “You two really should have left him to me…”

This was wrong. This was so horribly wrong. Snape was knocked out and Sirius Black, convicted murderer, servant of Voldemort, was free and loose. She had been so angry she had completely lost her mind after hearing him say those awful things. She wanted to hurt him, make him regret saying Harry should have died. She could care less what he’d said about their father. Harry was everything she had. And now… this night could end in her worst fear.

“We attacked a teacher…” Hermione was shaking her head furiously, staring at Snape’s body. “We – we attacked a teacher!”

Heather sniffed. She’d have run and hugged Hermione if this was any other situation. It had really only been Harry and her that attacked him.

“We’re going to be in so much trouble – !”

“We were already going to get expelled, Hermione,” Ron groaned from the floor.

Sirius Black had managed to untie Lupin and they both stood quickly.

Lupin rubbed his wrists and mouth. “Thank you, Heather, Harry.”

Heather shook her head, regretting her actions immensely.

“This doesn’t mean we believe you,” Harry replied.

“No, of course not.” Lupin nodded. “I think it’s time we show you the proof.”

Black turned to Ron. “Give me Peter. Now.”

Ron held Scabbers closer to his chest. “Come off it,” he whimpered. “Are you trying to tell us he broke out of Azkaban just to get his hands on Scabbers? That’s just… That’s mental,” he said weakly. “Peter can turn into a rat – there are millions of them! How’s he know this one is Peter if he was locked up in Azkaban!”

Lupin turned to Black with a puzzled look that made Heather’s heart stop and her stomach flip.

“How DID you find out he was here?” Lupin asked with a slight frown.

Black stared at Lupin as he extended out his hand like a claw. He bent his elbow and in one exasperated motion pulled out a wrinkled paper from an inside pocket. He smiled and handed it to Lupin, who took it and smoothed it out.

Harry inched closer and Heather followed suit, peering around Lupin’s shoulder to look down at the very same photograph Heather and Harry had seen of the Weasleys the previous summer holiday. It was a Daily Prophet clipping of Ron and his family posing to show off the vacation they had won, and Scabbers was clinging to Ron’s shoulder.

“What is it?” Ron croaked.

“Your family on vacation,” Heather whispered, stepping back.

“Mental!” Ron yelled.

“How did you come by this?” Lupin asked Black, thunderstruck.

Black gritted his teeth. “Fudge. When he came down to inspect Azkaban, he gave me his paper.” Black laughed weakly. “And there he was. Right on the front page. On this boy’s shoulder… I knew him at once… How many times had I seen him transform? And the caption… it said he was going back to Hogwarts… Back where Harry and Heather were…”

Lupin stared at Sirius black with wide-eyes and in total disbelief. Heather felt sick.

Lupin looked back at the picture and pointed. “Merlin...” He looked from the picture to Scabbers and back. “His paw.”

Black nodded.

“What about it!” Ron looked down at Scabbers.

“He’s got a tow missing,” Black said flatly.

Lupin looked at Scabbers incredulously. “Of course… So brilliant. He cut it off himself.”

“Right when I cornered him. Right before he transformed. He yelled for the whole street to hear. Before I could curse him he blew apart the street and killed everyone within twenty feet of him… and sped down the sewer with the other filthy rats.”

“Scabbers probably got in a fight with another rat!” Ron looked to Hermione, Heather, and Harry for support, but they all stayed very quiet. “He can’t be Peter, he’s been in my family for – ”

“Twelve years, isn’t that right?” Black snapped.

“Rats don’t live that long, Ron.” Lupin looked down at Scabbers. “That’s an abnormally long time for even magical rats.”

“No, we’ve just been taking good care of him!”

“He looks sick and underweight. I’m guessing he started getting like this right around the time when he heard Sirius had finally escaped.”

Ron was shaking his head. “No. No. It was that cat! That monster! He’s been scaring Scabbers ill! That mad cat!”

“He’s not mad.” Black bent down and pet Crookshanks as he purred between his legs. “He recognized him for what he was immediately. He even tried to help me. Tried to bring him to me and couldn’t. Then he tried to bring ME to him. Stole the Gryffindor passwords for me.”

Poor Neville. Heather was feeling a little less ill as everything was slowly getting clearer, to her immense and relieving surprise.

“He tried relentlessly for me. Then he said Peter faked his death – bit himself and left blood on the bed – he must have supposed if it worked once it could work again – ”

Something clicked and Heather felt like puking again. She shook her head. “He really is Peter… And he knew you’d come to finish him off – ”

“That’s why he faked his death! Why he’s been running!” Harry yelled, coming to the same conclusion Heather had just come to. “He knew you’d murder him like you murdered our parents!”

“I will murder him!” Black yelled back.

“We should have let Snape take you – ”

“Harry – ” Lupin put up his hands quickly. “All this time we’ve thought Sirius betrayed them and Peter tracked him down – But it was the other way around! Peter betrayed them, and Sirius tracked him down!”

Heather stepped forward, refusing to let Lupin continue with the lies. “No. We know Sirius was their Secret-Keeper, Peter couldn’t have betrayed them. Only HE could. Only the Secret-Keeper could betray them.”

“Precisely.” Lupin stared at her.

She blinked several times. “Peter wasn’t their Secret-Keeper…”

“I persuaded Lily and James to change to Peter at the last moment.” Black’s sunken eyes darkened with pained regret and he looked down as he continued. “I Persuaded them to use him as their Secret-Keeper instead of me… The night they died I had arranged to check on Peter. To make sure he was still safe. But when I got to his hiding place he wasn’t there. There wasn’t any sign of a struggle. I got scared and headed to your parent’s house right away… That’s when I saw it had been destroyed… and their bodies… I realized what Peter must have done… He betrayed them… But it’s my fault they’re dead. I as good as killed them – ” his voice caught and he turned away.

Lupin, looking down, shook his head. “Enough… Let’s really prove what happened. Ron,” he stepped over to Ron and extended his hand. “Give me that rat. I’ll force him to show himself. It won’t hurt him if he really is a rat.”

Scabbers was struggling like crazy in Ron’s grip. Ron looked down at him, and finally handed him over to Lupin. Scabbers started squeaking and squealing at the top of his tiny lungs, thrashing and twisting in Lupin’s hands.

Lupin turned to Sirius, who was back to his ferocious-looking self, teeth bared and all. “Ready, Sirius?”

Black nodded.

Lupin handed Sirius his wand. “Do the honors.”

Black snatched it from him at once. “Gladly!” He pointed the wand and a bright flash of white-blue light erupted from the tip, engulfing Scabbers’ body.

Lupin had let go and jumped away, and for a moment Scabbers was suspended mid-air and thrashing wildly. Ron yelled. And the rat hit the floor.

For a few seconds nothing happened, and then the rat started growing. It arched its spine and held his ears down. His tail began to shrink as his head and hands grew and turned from worm-pink to pale-pink. In a quick blink the rat turned into a grotesque child-sized creature and in another quick blink there was a man cowering in the very spot Scabbers had been.

Heather quickly turned and threw up under one of the farther boarded up windows, clutching her stomach and holding back her hair as she did.

8. paper or electronic books? for the aesthetic, paper (the smell and the covers, so precious) but on daily life electronic books are so much more practical

12. would you like to be famous? if so, what for? maybe after i died. i don’t deal well with too much attention over me. for writing great novels maybe?

19. what is the strangest thing you have eaten? i love japonese food (at least the brazilian version of it al~skçal) but eating raw fish is always a bit bizarre when i stop to think about it

21. do you like spicy food? yesss, but not to the point when the pepper takes over the flavor of it, so only as a complimentary condiment i guess

23. do you keep a diary or journal? i try to, it helps my mental health, but i mostly remember to write in it when i’m super sad/depressed/anxious

Depends. In middle school I went through two Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys Case Files every day. I read the last three Harry Potter books in a weekend. I read about 400 wpm with 100% comprehension, so ... do the math ;)

Eh ... sometimes it’s fun to see characters/settings/events on screen, but something’s always lost in the plot.

I’m not sure ... I remember being at the school book fair in first grade and picking up a fat book and one of the older kids thought it was too long for me but I was just like, “so I’ll read one book for several days instead of two or three books. It’s the same amount of reading.”

Ohh, that’s hard ... so much nostalgia! JKR of course, and LM Montgomery. I loved the Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew books as a kid

most things written about 1930 and earlier; stuff that’s commonly known/familiar tropes (like all the various adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, or Pride and Prejudice), stuff that’s technically well-written and meaty enough to be analyzed for English/literature classes. Good books but not necessarily enjoyable books, if that makes sense. Classics should have a wide range of appeal and stand the test of time. 

49: Which books do you think should be taught in every school?

books that are similar to that school’s student population and books that are different. Books that will expand the experience and imagination of their readers. Books that allow their readers to identify with a character(s) and realize they are not alone.

50: Which books should be banned from all schools?

None. No books get banned. Personal choice yes, censorship no. Censorship is a slippery slope, and who decides who gets to be the censor? Nope.

Pokémon FireRed Nuzlocke [Part 12]

Can we beat the game using Nuzlocke rules and only battling against trainers?

The current answer is leaning towards no. Still, we shan’t give up or in.

Four badges in. Next stop?

Uh. Haven’t decided yet.

So things did not go what I would call according to plan with the Grimer. Ideally, it would have been a higher level than 30. It wouldn’t need me to hold its hand through a bunch of leveling. It would immediately be an asset. Life would be beautiful. Nothing would hurt.

Only it’s level 30.

I have a Ground, Water, Electric, and Normal Type in rotation. Grass has historically been a problem, but it is much less of a problem with a Snorlax. Oak isn’t always the most useful, but he’ll be receiving a huge power boost come Surf collection.

Bark and Trunk are going to be wanting all the Attack EVs I can feed them. Sap is going to want Attack as well. And HP.

Its move pool is a huge plus, and I would be happy to have it available, but to make it available, a lot of switch training would have to happen. When Sprinkle went through that, experience gain dropped to a slow crawl. Sprinkle was only level 25, and at an even later stage in the game, but the approach taken with this round was intended to be geared towards a minimum of pokemon.

Other things to consider would be that in the first run, I lost two pokemon, and a lot of work went into making up for that. The two runs can’t be compared fairly with what levels to expect further down the road. ...I. think.

By the first Elite Four fight, Po was level 46. My highest level pokemon was 49.

It did not go well.

I need this one to go better.

Does it go better with Sap, or does it go better with maxing the heck out of the other four.

I really, really want to use Sap.

Having a status-reliant choice instead of a pure powerhouse makes me more comfortable with everything else. Minimize is good. Screech is welcome. Sludge Bomb is welcome. Acid Armor is welcome. Muk is a kickass thing to have available.

But I’m not sure splitting the exp is going to do me any favors this late in the game. Silph offers a lot of lenience, I guess, but. Cycling Road is going to go to Trunk. So is a lot else, and what doesn’t should help out Bark.

Five pokemon starts to be a lot.

...Gloom’s technically not viable because Oddish and species clause, but screw it, it’s not going to be used, I’m too lazy to look up what else is here, and I just want this part done and over with. I know that’s really bad form. but. I am not a rules lawyer. once, maybe. not anymore.

So far with trainers, the way I’m keeping my sanity with exp division is that the Bikers go to Trunk, and Bark and Sap get the Bird Keepers.

It is slow and tiresome. I do not care for thinking when I am playing my video games.

We’re in Route 18 now, and doing the same nonsense to a Raticate. This is it. This is the point. This is where I stop caring about any of the rules except the no grinding thing. Everything else is irrelevant.

Bark ffs. Stop. Sigh.

+414 exp. Route 18 officially dead.

(Also, this looks like I should have known that she would kill it, but Bark still knows Mud Slap. It does as much nothing as anything on my team can. Still not enough nothing when critical hits are involved.)

Back in the realm of completely legal catches, we have a Poliwag!

Throwing a Great Ball proves the best strategy. In that it works. Poliwag get! Its name is Oak.

In other, trainer-related news, Sap hits 34 and learns Acid Armor.

We have also cleared out the section of trainers that is not Saffron and not Cycling Road that comes pre-Koga. Naisu.

So, post-Cycling Road, Trunk is level 41, Bark is level 42, Sap is 35, Oak is 37, and Acorn is 40. I think what makes the most sense in terms of safety is to go clear out the Silph building, then deal with the dojo and assorted Gyms.

I don’t remember if it was me or someone I knew, but as a child, I have distinct memories of the timer flat-lining just a handful of squares away from talking to this guy. It filled me with enough sadness that I think maybe I was the one having the issues.

Granted, it’s much easier without having to record every single fight, but the memories of the most recent time I did this are harsh and painful and I don’t like them.

Because there are so many vitamins hidden around the building, I’m starting to really panic about how my team is going to handle the final parts of the game. I of course love all my children equally, but losing the first team was rough, and I can’t imagine that I’ll continue to engage with my pokemon on any level if things consistently fall to pieces in the very last sequences.

In a funny way, I think the EV training I’m softly tripping through might be hampering things a little. The balance is more sideways than my usual in-game teams have, because I’m focusing a lot on who’s fighting what. There are no random bursts of Defense being distributed, for instance. Oak is the closest to balance, and that’s because Oak had to do most everything before we had a real team (no offense buddy, you rock).

I don’t know. I’m paranoid. Things did not go well with Heero and friends. I think I want to invest in some of the X [stat] items, you know, like the way of the speedrunner, but the way I usually play these games involves brute force.

Full stop.

I can’t repeat enough how little I enjoy thinking in my video games.

But what that means is that I’m not used to using X items. And spending a turn on something I haven’t spent years of background noise thinking about could have disastrous consequences.

The disaster is something I fear. Clearly.

Sigh. There’s not helping it right now, so. Silph.

Where I’m going to try not to get Sap killed by letting him have this fight for great exp. I trust Sap’s moves. I trust the concept of their usefulness. Then I see critical hits and tragedy everywhere.

You know. I have the post that says this involves a level 37 Hitmonlee open in another tab. And yet. This still comes as a horrible shock and my brain is already playing taps for Sap.

Oak’s job is to eat Sabrina. With any luck, Oak will continue to be a help with Blaine, though Bark and Sap will want some of that sweet exp too.

...Basically, what this all means is that I’ve stopped worrying about most of what’s going on with my team. I’m now just watching the levels and letting my dread run the show.

Dread and Oak. The dream team. Oak’s hit 44. I have faith.

.....Ooookay things are going awry because a Calm Minded Alakazam packs a wallop with Psychic, so I’m switching in Acorn under the assumption that he can survive one Psychic and will outspeed the thing.

I also no longer have something on my team with Thunderbolt, so. The script is no longer clear. I guess I can be less worried about levels, but. This right here might be the end of this round.

With a heavy heart, we head to the oceans where Acorn should have reigned supreme.

And stop Sap from evolving so he can learn Sludge Bomb at 43. Hopefully doing that won’t lead to another unfortunate accident, but if it does happen, I’m sadly resigned to it.

I don’t know how many times Sap has hurt himself in confusion in this fight, but it’s too many.

Then the Tentacruel comes in when this is finally over, and Sap hurts himself in confusion.

Yeah.

Sap’s just eating every single confusion problem of the entire run. He’s taking it all for himself.

But. we. get. through. it. As a family.

Hit Route 20, and now I have a level 8 Tentacool. Its name is Oak.

Supersonic is hitting everything and it is absolutely miserable.

Seafoam Island gives us.... Golbat! Apparently we already had a Zubat, so whoops, but in any case, its name is Oak. And needs to be moved from the D E A D box because whoops.

Does Oak want to learn Fly and help greatly with things not being awful?

And I am at 30 pokemon in my Pokedex, so it’s time for me to go grab my Itemfinder and Leftovers.

Okay, so for this Gym, I think I’ll be using Sap more than expected. Bark and Oak will deal with a lot of Giovanni, because they don’t have to worry about Ground really causing an extra problem. That makes this a better place for Trunk and Sap to level up. Agreed?

Yeah sure, whatever.

I guess the other thing to consider is if Bark will really be a help in this endeavor.

She’s very, very fast, and will learn Earthquake naturally. But she can’t take a hit, and with the loss of Acorn, I’m thinking what I have to do is just have Trunk, Oak, and Sap tank everything; lots of X items, lots of Full Restores.

Most of the time, Bark can’t afford to take a second hit of anything.

If I really want to optimize, Cutting down to three out of my four might be the better call.

Ugh, that’s such a dangerous number, though.

Sap has an amazing move set. I really could just...

Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, Lance, Rival.

Trunk could probably handle Lorelei. Sap could do the Fighting half of Bruno, and the other half isn’t really a problem. The plan with Agatha was always to teach Po Shadow Ball, but then Zaft needed Thunderbolt, so I couldn’t afford it. Lance is hell, but not one a Dugtrio is likely to improve by much.

I have no idea what to do for Oak.

But if I can set Sap up, a lot of problems become manageable. I can’t brute force this. I keep saying that, and I keep ignoring it because that’s not how I play these games. I need better strategies. Bark’s Attack stat isn’t up to being a glass cannon. She’s a glass rifle, maybe. Fantastic, but eating up resources without serving an extra purpose. She’ll be just as dead in two hits if I keep on giving her exp. Leveling could remove that weakness, but I don’t have anything to work with there.

I have to focus on three.

Damn it.

For now, let’s finish Blaine, shall we.

I definitely can be adventurous but I feel like I have been a lot more ruthless with characters in the past. Of late I have tended to take less risks with my kinks and themes, both because I haven’t gravitated towards writing darker themes as much as I did a few years ago, but also probably feeling less secure about exploring certain content with the whole trend towards kink and ship shaming. I’m trying to actively push my boundaries more though and I’m running an anti-Valentine’s dark fic fest on @hpdarkarts in Feb next year, and HP Horror Fest will be back on that platform, plus I have my Gryles and Drarry kink fics to finish so I’m hoping my adventurous spirit is coming back. Also @hpkinkfest is coming back for 2019 too, so plenty of potential to explore less written things.

I don’t migrate much at all. I have a number of fandoms I read fic and meta in but don’t consistently participate in as a writer - the main two of those are Sherlock and Supernatural. I’m very much still active in Harry Potter. BBC Radio One RPF is the only other fandom I have launched myself into with the same kind of energy as HP, but I lurked for a long time before getting involved, so I’ve only been properly writing in the fandom since last summer when I started posting Kissing in the Rain, although I had one fic which predates that. HP and BBC Radio One RPF with a lot of fondness for the 1D boys and particularly Harry and Louis should continue to make up the majority of my fandom activities over the next year I expect, with a possible uptick in writing in Supernatural. I’m keeping an eye on Voltron and have some very persuasive friends shipping the hell out of Sheith so that’s kind of on my radar too right now.

Losing His Religion is my Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy kink series. It’s not a multi-chaptered WIP but it’s a series that’s overdue an update. Although the first part, Bedroom Hymns, can be read as a One Shot, the second part, Confessions, will make the whole thing feel more complete. The second part has been stalled for a while, but most definitely not abandoned. 

The 50 Reasons Series isn’t a WIP in that it requires an update (the fics are all standalone) but I should probably pick it up again soon, and stop starting new ones and finish the ones I already have in progress, see my WIP folder of doom.

Well, it’s finally done.  After all these years of just refusing to play the damn game, I beat Dark Souls 2 in its entirety.  Which means, I have now beaten the entire series to 100% completion, and it is time to make a decision.

I’ll start with the game itself.  I know a lot of people identify it as the jankiest, and that it just doesn’t function right.  I’m not quite sure I’d agree with that entirely?  It’s definitely weird, though.  Like, when adaptability is low and your roll sucks, you’ll be rolling through something but still take damage for reasons.  That’s kinda shitty.  And it’s only really fixable by keeping low weight and trying to allocate points there early on.  So we hope you enjoy playing melee only for most of the game.  Not that it makes sense to do anything else anyway.

What is a major problem is how many times your slow-ass character is surrounded by like 5 enemies.  Look, the Souls series is weird.  A single boss with big attacks is not really that threatening, but a room of three normal enemies is a death sentence if you aggro them all simultaneously.  There are a ton of bosses where the only real difficulty is crowd control.  Skeleton Lords, Ruin Sentinels, Looking Glass Knight, Twin Dragonriders, Throne Defender and Watcher, Duke’s Dear Freya, Executioner’s Chariot (which extra sucks because adds are infinite unless you kill the necromancers), Darklurker, the fucking Belfry Gargoyles, Royal Rat Authority.  Then in NG+ you get Lost Sinner summoning help, and the DLC introduces all kinds of fresh hell for you, like Elana (who I actually love, but only from lore standpoint), Lud and Zallen, the Ivory King, and the ganksquad.  So much of this game is difficulty by suddenly being surrounded by too many units, and there are locations that are outright impossible to get through without a bow or spells to draw one person at a time (the run to Velstadt and the Ancient Dragon most notably).

That said...this is probably the easiest of the games.  Not for any sensible reason like bosses just being easier or anything.  It’s because you can power-level like a motherfucker, and are almost encouraged to do so.  Levels scale so minimally that, at around level 200, you still only need around 50,000 souls to level.  That is not a high bar to set, and level 200 means you can pack a lot of different tools, including your melee weapon of choice, spells of choice, and still have a good HP pool and a solid roll.  Not gonna lie: actually love this fact.  I think that the series as a whole suffers from not really allowing you to mix-and-match sets.  A lot of things require specification, and quality builds are notoriously Not That Good.  So being able to fairly easily cap most relevant stats in the first playthrough is fantastic.

That said, then you have the negative: Soul Memory.  So, in this game, you can be summoned to help a player fight a boss, to regain your humanity without using the finite consumable Effigies.  This is good, because going hollow means your HP gets cut pretty sharply, up to 50% of your max life.  Which is stupid as hell, but whatever.  Now, to be summoned, you need to be in the right tier as other players.  Meaning that, if you want to be summoned reliably to fight Old Iron King, you need to be...not at Soul Memory 800k.  Otherwise it takes like 3 days to get your 30 sunlight medals you need for that spell to get the trophies.  Not that I’m bitter.  Basically, as you fight the boss, you gain more souls, which puts you at a higher soul memory, which puts you out of range of typical players, so you can’t really farm reliably or recover humanity reliably from easier bosses.  I like the idea of encouraging co-op, but the soul memory system is awful.  It probably also influences invasions, but fuck invaders.  If you invade people, you’re a piece of shit and I hope your system bricks.

As the last thing to note: the major complain I often see is “why are so many bosses just armored sword man; what is this, Smash 4?”  Which is super legit.  There are a lot of bosses that are just different variants on knight.  Especially in the main game, this made it really easy to reach Velstadt...and basically beat him no damage.  Because you know what’s happening now.  You know how the knight fight goes, and there’s nothing all that unique.  It’s very same-y.  Of course, this does nothing to stop me from getting my shit pushed in like 37 times against Fume Knight, but honestly fuck that asshole.

Lore-wise, I feel like this is the weakest of the games, but I also feel like it’s closest to what I would want out of a sequel.  I’m serious.  I think that DS1 presented a fairly complete story, that didn’t really have a need for continuation in this way.  DS2′s focus on bringing all these references to DS1 back is obnoxious, and the thing that holds it back the most.  Focus on kingdoms within the world all you want.  Focus on this entirely separate place called Drangleic and have it focus on all this unique stuff, in a place that doesn’t even know what the hell Lordran is or why the curse is showing up.  But keeping it separate was really what is lacking here.  Why is Ornstein just here?  Just hanging out?  Why is the statue for the Warriors of Sunlight still here when nothing else remained, and why is it near fucking Earthen Peak of all damn places?  Why do the four great lord souls from DS1 just show up on NG+ with the new four great souls?  Just keep them separate.  You didn’t have to do this.

There is, however, one thing I actually like that’s a tie-in, and that’s the queens.  I like the idea of Manus’ defeat resulting in the creation of these beings of the abyss showing up, and trying in their own ways to bring things back to the Dark.  It’s something that ties in nicely, but isn’t just a shallow reference without meaning.  It also helps that they’re pretty cool.  Elana is, as I mentioned, my favorite, which has a lot to do with her trying to poison a dragon to death.  Fuck that dragon up, girl.  Stupid bitch lizard ain’t got shit.  She’s also just the most outright conniving of the four, I think.

Overall, it’s not a terrible game, but it does feel very different.  I think the main thing I take away is that it’s still very much a Dark Souls game.  It’s all focused around difficulty meaning dying a lot, but this time with added penalties in the form of hollowing, and soul memory fucking literally everything up by putting you out of summon range whenever you suck and have to re-do runs to the boss, or try to farm levels to handle a problem.  Magic is still boring a shit, and this game is almost the worst offender considering all my best spell options were just throwing Dark Orb at shit until it stopped breathing because it was fast and had a stupidly high number of casts compared to everything else in the game.  I still feel like boss health is way too goddamn high given how unforgiving the game is toward any mistake in a fight, and how little variation there often is in a moveset.  I’ve said before that I enjoy this series largely because it’s an active playing process that lets you build up your character, and that stat allocations are something I adore above all else, but it’s just not doing it for me.  I’ve played about every type of build I can, in every game.  Magic is always boring and way less effective than heavy armor with a stick.  Melee weapons function very differently, but every major boss still boils down to learn pattern, dodge or block, attack one or maybe two times then back to defense so you don’t eat shit, repeat for 15 minutes until dead.  It’s...kinda boring by now.

Which leads me to this: I’m trading this entire series in for Etrian Odyssey V on Tuesday.  I don’t hate the games, but I find there is no further enjoyment to be had here.  I’m more invested in completing a build, which leads to a lot of time just spent grinding, and I experience more frustration with getting through a run than anything else, since the series has become more of a placeholder between games than something I actually want to play on its own.  In a weird way, it’s almost become too effective of a placeholder, and I could probably accomplish more significant things or branch out a bit instead of just replaying these whenever I’m bored and waiting on something else to come out.  So, I’m done.  I’m trading it all in, and honestly, thank god.
