horror movies... [itoshi rin x reader]
★ in which rin watches a horror film with his new gf for the first time (aka justice for cinnamoroll). ★
(not proofread)
"to be honest, rin, i hate horror movies." you looked over sheepishly to your boyfriend of a few months, who, to the untrained eye, seemingly made no change to his stoic facial expression. but you could see the slight downturn of his cheeks, his eyes stilling in disappointment. though the two of you hadn't been dating long, and there was still a lot to learn about each other, you prided yourself in being able to notice even the subtle changes in rin's expression. seeing him with this look on his face made you flail desperately to fix the situation.
"b-but i don't mind watching one! we watched a film of my choice, it's only fair we watch one of yours now."
you and rin were having a movie night. the couch in your apartment was decked out in blankets and cushions, and, most importantly, the oversized cinnamoroll plushie rin had won you on your first date to the arcade. snacks and popcorn lay on the coffee table in front of you, and were half-eaten or discarded, for the sake of not ruining your appetite for dinner (rin was meticulous about that sort of thing, and you love him for it). this was your first movie night in a few months, owing to the busy schedules of both you and your footballer boyfriend, so you were eager to make it perfect. you had just finished watching Pride and Prejudice, one of your favourites.
you were sat directly next to rin, huddled under the same blanket and thighs touching, but pointedly not cuddling. the both of you were relatively new to relationships, and while you have cuddled before, you were conscious of cuddling him too close or too much. you'd like to think you know rin well, very well, better than others. but that didn't mean you knew when he was completely comfortable with physical affection. for one thing, he rarely initiated it, opting for tight hugs and not much else. though you loved physical affection, you didn't want to make rin uncomfortable.
"we don't have to watch this, you know." rin starts, "it's not a big deal."
"yes, we do! i want to watch the things you like, rin." you say brightly, turning to the side to smile up at him. he looks at you, again with a somewhat blank expression, but the tinge of red on his ears reassures you that your message was received. he huffs slightly, pressing play and bringing the just-delivered box of pizza to his lap, offering you the first slice.
"i'm still surprised you agreed to get pizza," you laugh, holding the slice delicately with your hands, "what about your protein goals?"
"one day off will do no harm."
the film had started, but you, with the ever active brain, began to feel anxious. one of the main things, or perhaps the only thing, you dislike about horror films are the jumpscares. you were incredibly easy to scare, and jumpscares had your heart pounding and your body airborne. it wasn't a fun feeling, and the scary storylines of horror films made it even worse. the last time you watched a horror film, the ghosts would be the only thing you could see when you closed your eyes (and, consequently, you couldn't go to sleep properly for a few days after watching). you would probably have to deal with not being able to sleep for the next few days again, but that was well worth it to watch rin's favourite film.
there was one thing, you think, that might help dealing with the scares of the horror film playing in front of you right now, and that would be if you could cuddle up to your boyfriend and hide your face in his strong chest. rin had a special talent for making you feel safe without trying, just by putting his arms around you. you start to daydream about being scooped up into rin's arms, him telling you that 'you're fine, you're safe' and 'it's just a movie'. but you snap out of it easily, scolding yourself for being too presumptuous. if rin wanted to cuddle, he would have initiated it himself. having finished your pizza, you grip onto your cinnamoroll plushie instead, bracing yourself for the jumpscares in the film.
rin, on the other hand, has not been able to concentrate since he first pressed play. he had been watching you out of the the corner of his eye, smushing your cute, round cheek against the oversized plushie in your arms. you were so cute, he thought, with your hair loose, falling gracefully over your shoulders. your nose was slightly scrunched, probably in anticipation of a jumpscare, and rin thought it was the most adorable thing ever. the pajamas you had on were fluffy, making you look like a plushie in your own right. you looked so...huggable. there was an odd feeling in rin's stomach, a weird churning, at the sight of you cuddling something. something other than him, perhaps? he sighed quietly, and brushed it off as being due to the greasy pizza he had just eaten. maybe one day off can do harm.
"AAH!" you screamed, as the murderer in the film appeared out of nowhere behind the main character's mother (she was almost certainly going to die now). you gripped onto cinnamoroll for dear life, squeezing your eyes shut and burying you face into one his ears. at the same time, rin gasped and reached out for you instinctively, hesitating once his hand reached your shoulder. he contemplated something, thoughts whirring as he slowly recoiled his arm, eyes fixated on your scared form. you looked back at him, smiling apologetically for your loud scream.
"sorry, rin. i'm so sorry. gosh, how embarassing, haha." rin frowned at your words, partly because you had nothing to be sorry for, and partly because you were still cuddling that damn plushie.
"it's...fine. are you okay?"
"yeah, i'm oka-AAAH!" the father had just now been murdered also. why was everyone dying in this film? you began whimpering slightly, squeezing poor cinnamoroll that it looked like it might explode. rin frowned deeply, and he huffed loudly as he turned from you back to the tv screen. you looked over at him questioningly as he grumbled under his breath.
"rin? is something wrong? oh, am i being too loud? i'm sorry, i'll try not to scr-"
"that's not it. it's fine, don't worry."
"what's the matter then?"
you were now turned fully towards rin as he diligently faced the tv, not being able to look you in the eye in fear of choking up. stealing a single glance, he huffed again at the sight of that stupid white dog still snuggled tightly within your arms. he made eye contact with cinnamoroll, scolding himself at the fact that he was jealous over a damn plushie.
"y'know...if you get scared...we can.." he trailed off, and now you were even more curious as to what was wrong with your boyfriend. was he annoyed at you getting scared? no, he did say that wasn't it. was he going to suggest to turn the movie off? maybe he thought you weren't having fun.
"don't worry about me rin! i want to watch this film with you - you said it's one of your favourites. don't turn it off because of me!"
and there you go again, with that blinding smile and that sparkle in your eyes. rin felt weak, the churning feeling in his stomach not ceasing. he coughed and turned away, cheeks burning furiously. after he didn't respond, you looked back up at him and blinked inquisitively.
the sounds of suspense could be heard from the tv screen, making you gasp softly and snap your head back to the movie, before burying your head back into the plushie. rin's frown deepened. this is so stupid.
in an instant, the cinnamoroll plushie was pried from your hands and tossed to the other side of the couch. you mouth opened in an 'o', watching wordlessly as rin threw your plushie, turning back to you with determination in his eyes.
"rin? what–oh–"
he took a breath, then hooked his arm under your knees, wrapping his other arm around your shoulders. in one fell swoop, you were hoisted onto rin's leg, hands landing onto his chest, all the while your bewildered expression stuck on his ever-stoic face.
though his eyebrows were furrowed, his cheeks were a soft pink, and his eyes held a gentle look in them, as if they were asking, pleading you to lean on him. "if you get scared, i'll hold you. you don't need that plushie." he says in a low, soft tone.
you smiled, your blush matching his. keeping your hands firmly on his chest, you buried yourself deeper as he rearranged the blanket atop of you both.
and when the next jumpscare made its way onto the screen, you screamed unapologetically, burying your face into rin's chest while he soothingly rubbed your back. a ghost of a smile played on his lips on account of how cute you looked in that moment.
"it's okay, you're okay...i'm here." he whispered.
"thanks, rin."
he squeezes you reassuringly, taking one last look of victory at the forgotten cinnamoroll plushie.

thinking about the whole robpat!batman movie’s thesis being “shit. fuck. turns out this whole time the legacy of my rage and vengeance-fueled vigilante justice has been enabling domestic terrorism by entitled white men. all along what this city needed and what i needed was healing and extending our hands to our neighbors instead of continuing the cycle of trauma and violence” like the movie put their whole chest into that. it looked at their audience and said to their face “you guys never actually understood what batman is about. you saw the dark brooding aesthetic and the toxic masculinity and the individualistic lonewolfism and you see that as something to aspire to, when the point of batman was always Corruption And Evil Exists Within Those With Power And Money Not In Mental Illness, and by missing that and making it all about yourself you became the villain of this story.” in theaters right in front of batman stans. no wonder robpat was cast for this like i’ve never seen someone pull off self-loathing white man so naturally
#laughs awkwardly#sorry i watched black adam recently (long story) and like. i can't help but feel like the subversive parts of it#just weren't as strong as how it felt to watch a batman movie where batman had to beat the crap of his own fans#like [SPOILERS] black adam wanted to be self-aware about superhero films and wanted to point out the american propaganda#inherent to the concept of 'international justice' but because it was primarily pulled off through funny quips it felt like it didn't COMMIT#(felt very marvel in that respect actually)#like yes your main character told off the western superheroes for the hypocrisy of their 'peace' efforts but then... what?#in the end the westerners were still the genuine and helpful people they claimed they were. the main characters had to trust them to survive#in the end the self-actualization of an oppressed people felt hollow because we barely spent any time with them during the story#in the end the people's chosen hero turned out to be not who they thought he was and his character turning point to become a hero was...#he magically knew to break out of an underwater prison? honestly that part was a little confusing to me but extremely horrifying#like this guy basically explicitly said 'you should kill me. that's what i want' AND THEY JUST DID NOT DO THAT#like obviously i know he needed to come back since the movie was about him but like. damn. way to not at all respect his autonomy#he said 'i should die' and they went 'haha but instead we're gonna put you in storage forever so you never reunite with your family in death#HORROR. THE MOST DYSTOPIAN SHIT I'VE EVER SEEN. YOUR BODY IS NOT YOUR OWN IN CASE WE FIND IT USEFUL LATER#WE'RE SO PEACEFUL THAT WE CAN NEVER ACCEPT [GASP] MURDER BUT ANY OTHER VIOLATION OF YOUR CONSENT IS FINE#HOW WAS THIS BRUSHED OVER SO CASUALLY#WHAT WAS I TALKING ABOUT BEFORE#yeah you know what i don't really know where i was going with this either. i just had Thoughts#like did i think the rob!patman the movie took itself so seriously it was accidentally kind of comedic? yeah for sure#but because they took it seriously it felt like the element of metacommentary was sincere. like i can also take it seriously#i keep thinking about that scene where rpatz was interrogating the riddler and the horror that dawns on him#because he's looking at this man who idolizes batman but despises bruce wayne and realizes Oh God That's Me. This Is What I Created#like shit dude i don't think superhero films necessarily should or must be Deep in an Artistic way but i can give them props for trying?

I hope this is what you were looking for :) thank you for requesting
FWB..again?
Tumblr media
Y/N has forced Eddie to watch countless movies about friends with benefits never working out. The guy falls for the girl or the girl falls for the guy. It was a common plot line. And Eddie was pissed that he found himself in the same situation.
Eddie and Y/N started hooking up months ago, on a random night when they were both drunk. The next morning they tried to remain just friends, making sure nothing was awkward. But that didn't last long. They fell into each other beds over and over. Neither had a conversation about feelings or calling things off when their minds changed.
But lately, Eddie sensed something between her and Steve. And it made his blood burn. Eddie couldn't stand Steve as it was, but now he's coming after his girl? Well, not his girl, but pretty damn sure felt like it. When they were alone, she never talked about Steve, not even a tiny sentence. But every time he saw them together, they were always in a heated discussion. It was like Steve waited on every word that left her mouth.
Eddie never knew how to handle his feelings. Why else would he be friends with benefits with the girl he's secretly been in love with for years? He knew sex and he knew he did it well. But a relationship? He wasn't sure if he had what it took. Steve Harrington was a relationship guy, maybe she knew that.
Eddie didn't want to feel second best to the King Steve Harrington. He also didn't want to be her plaything while she made advances towards someone else. So he called it off. He ripped the band-aid off as fast as he could, watching the confusion take over her face. She questioned him, but he didn't give answers. He didn't admit that he was insecure and jealous of Steve. He didn't want to stand in the way of her finding the love of her life.
He just didn't know that he was the love of her life.
Eddie knew calling it off would be hard, but he didn't think of the aftermath. How even more painful it was to sleep with her scent on his pillows. Or how bad it hurt that every night it was less and less strong. He didn't talk to her much anymore. He was too embarrassed to be around her while he was keeping his heart together. She tried to keep the friendship alive, calling him and inviting him out. But he always declined. Being with her was a taste of what he couldn't have.
~~~
Y/N wasn't sure what changed with Eddie. She couldn't remember anything changing that would lead to him breaking them up. But when she asked, he didn't have anything to say. It hurt more than anything, she loved him and loved having parts of him that no one else did. Maybe that's what changed? Maybe he found someone else?
She tried to stay focused on Steve. She's been helping him with his dating life and it was a good distraction for her. Her love life was failing, but maybe she could help him.
~~~
Eddie walked around the video store for a few minutes before he caught Steve. He wanted to run before he noticed, but Steve was already waving him over.
"Hey Steve," Eddie said through his clenched teeth, passing over the horror film. Steve greeted him back and rang up his movie.
Eddie didn't want to ask and he didn't want to know. So why the hell did he ask?
"So...how's things with Y/N?"
Eddie wanted to smack himself. Steve looked at him confused as he grabbed the receipt.
"What do you mean?"
"Oh nothing, just figured you guys were together or something." Eddie shrugged, acting like the thought hadn't kept him up for days.
"Isn't she with you? Like aren't you guys together?" Steve was confused. All she talked about was Eddie, Eddie, and more Eddie.
"We aren't together." Eddie rushed out. "I mean we were! But not together, together. Just having hot sex but like that's it." He rambled
"....yeah I didn't need to know the last part." Steve cringed. He loved Y/N as a sister and hearing that made his stomach turn. "But anyway, why did you think she and I were together?"
"Just figured from seeing you guys together," Eddie explained, but now he had a feeling he sounded like an idiot.
"Oh no. I don't like her and she's into you, bud." Steve said, patting Eddie's shoulder with a tight smile.
~~~
With the confirmation from Steve's mouth that Y/N was into Eddie and Eddie alone, he raced to her house.
He nervously knocked on her door. He wasn't sure how she would react to seeing him again. Considering he ignored every possible interaction with her. To his luck, she opened the door. Her eyes were red and puffy. But she smiled at him.
"Oh hey!" She greeted him, she sounded happy and bubbly. But he could tell she was crying minutes or even seconds before she opened the door.
"Hey, can we talk?" To his surprise, she welcomed him inside and led him to her room. A room he'd been in many times but now felt like a stranger standing in it.
"What's up?" She asked, sitting on her bed as she faced him. He stood near her doorway, ready for a fast exit in case she wanted to scream at him for messing everything up.
"I think you deserve to know why I ended things." He said, playing with his rings as he watched her. Her smile fell, like the reminder of what he did washed over her again.
"Um, yeah. It would be nice to have that closure." She agreed.
"I'm kind of an idiot," he began, smiling as she laughed. "I like you, and I'm pretty sure I'm in love with you. And it scared me. But I also got scared because I thought something was happening between you and Steve. I didn't want to be in the way of a relationship that would be good for you! So I figured running away seemed like the best idea. I'm sorry for hurting you and us."
"I don't like Steve at all " she said quickly.
"Which I know! He told me. He said you were into me." Eddie explained
She blushed and was a little annoyed Steve told him, but at the same time that's what brought Eddie back to her.
"Well it's true, I like you. And I'm pretty sure I love you too. Then you dumped me out of nowhere and I thought maybe you found someone else. I was only with Steve because he wanted help with his sucky dating life." Y/N chuckled.
Eddie finally moved his legs, sitting next to her as he grabbed her hand.
"Never will there be anyone else. It's like those shitty movies you make me watch. Where you scream at the TV because the two characters are in love but don't do anything about it." He explained. He loved the way she smiled and laughed again.
"Maybe we shouldn't be those characters. Maybe we should do something about it." She whispered, leaning in towards him.
"I think so too " he whispered back. His lips melted against hers as he kissed her. He hummed at the familiar taste and feeling.
Eddie Munson could be a relationship guy too
And they were roommates part 2
Tumblr media
A/N: well well well... If it isn't the latest manic episode from my brain. Anyways enjoy...
TW: none..? Angst, cuz bwahahah I'm mean.
here's part one
____
You sat hugging tightly your fluffy pillow against your chest. The living room was plunged into darkness, the tv being the only thing shining through the room. It was a little after midnight, and you were completely alone. Ghost had warned you that he'd be home late so you wouldn't make dinner for him. You still did though.
First you had wanted to go sleep or maybe play a bit on your consoles but you were quickly bored. You weren't exactly waiting for him… no. You just… wanted to make sure he had eaten. Yes. That was it.
So here you were. Sitting on the couch, in front of a horror movie. Not the best idea, but nothing was interesting enough at this hour.
You had mixed feelings about horror movies. But one thing was for sure. Right now, you hated them. Your morbid curiosity made you unable to change channels though.
Your eyes were glued to the screen. You watched as the woman was hiding. You felt your skin crawl at the idea. Perhaps was it even exciting? No. You brushed that thought away. The silence from the movie and the house was almost suffocating. Time seemed to stretch, the seconds feeling like minutes.
Something in the corner of your eyes caught your attention. Just as the movie's music suddenly rang to break the suspense you glance to your left, the tall silhouette standing next to the couch clearly visible.
The scream escaping your lips was expected. The pillow thrown? Maybe not so much.
The silhouette launched itself on top of you, a strong body keeping you from escaping as a gloved hand draped over your mouth, keeping you from screaming.
"Sparrow!"
You stopped squirming at the voice. Your racing heart and quickened breath was the only thing heard. The tv remote had fallen and muted the film when you had started fighting the intruder. But there was no intruder.
"It's me. Breathe." He said in a soothing voice.
Tears burned your eyes. As he lifted his hand from your mouth, a whine escaped your lips.
"Ghost…" you whispered.
"Yes.. I'm sorry. I.. I didn't mean to scare you." He tried, his voice still low.
The situation was now clearer. His body trapped yours as you both laid on the couch. Your hands were fisted in his hoodie, hanging on for dear life. He was wearing a simple balaclava with a skull print, he sometimes wore it around the house. His eyes had a mixture of concern and determination.
"Sparrow." He called, trying to keep your focus on him.
"I would never hurt you." His voice sounded calm. Normal. Thinking that you could hear a little fear in it was just your imagination. What could he be scared of? That you wouldn't believe him? That you'd actually be scared of… no.
"I know" you threw back at him. For some reason, even though it had only been a little over a month since you shared the appartement, you were absolutely sure without a single doubt that he wouldn't hurt you.
He softly sat back, making you let go of his hoodie. He pulled you up with him, making you sit next to him.
You took a deep breath.
"Are you ok?" He asked.
"Yeah… I hate horror movies."
"Why are you watching one then?"
"Because I'm obviously an idiot who loves to wake up the whole base by screaming bloody murder at 1 am."
He chuckled.
He chuckled. He rarely did. Had you even heard him chuckle before?
He eyed you.
"I didn't know what time you'd be home. You surprised me." You said matter of factly.
"Yes. I think the whole base figured that out." He teased.
You rolled your eyes at him. You glanced back to notice him staring at you.
"What..?"
No answer.
"Ghost? You really do have a staring problem, you know you-"
His gloved hand rose to your face, his thumb softly brushing a tear that had rolled down your cheek. You didn't even feel it fall. You blinked. He didn't let anything show but somehow, just a little bit, you could feel he felt guilty.
"I'm a crybaby… sorry" you joked. Trying to lighten the mood.
"Next time I'll call the base, I'll know when to expect you" you laughed.
He still didn't react. He simply glanced down at the coffee table. He grabbed something from it.
"Unlock it." He ordered. God was he bossy sometimes.
You looked down at your phone in his hand. You frowned but did as he asked. You watched him type something before handing it back to you. You looked at the screen, reading the contact infos on it.
Lieutenant Ghost Riley.
Riley… your heart jumped in your chest. Riley. He was giving you his last name.
"Call me next time. Or text me. If I don't text you." he said.
You looked up at him, smiling softly.
"Yes lieutenant."
He cleared his throat.
"By the way. A pillow is not a good weapon. Next time throw the popcorn bowl at least."
Your cheeks turned to a light shade of red, remembering your reflex as you were scared.
"Sorry.."
__
"Please ! I'm really bored!" You whined following the masked man. He sighed.
"Sparrow. Stop." He warned.
You groaned exaggeratedly. It had been a week after he made you scream at the top of your lungs at 1 am. You had received a little visit from two soldiers, no less than 20 minutes later, ready to berate you for waking up the apartment complex. Fortunately for you, they quickly retracted once the lieutenant had shown up behind you, admitting it was his fault. They both apologized, looking shocked, immediately recognizing him by his mask. Funny. Wonder what they were thinking, I mean, he did make you scream.
"I promise, it'll be great. I'll show you how to do it… we can have some fun!" You tried, batting your lashes at him.
He glanced at you. His eyes showed annoyance yet no anger.
"If I accept, are you going to stop whining?" He asked.
You nodded frantically.
You had noticed his slight behavior change since the movie night. He was a little more gentle. A little more… clingy? He spent a bit more time around you, even if no words were exchanged. Sometimes he'd even do push-ups in the living room while you read a book.
He groaned. You smiled widely. You won! He accepted it! No… you were not using this new change of behavior to befriend him at all. Who would think that?
You jumped on the couch, patting the space next to you. He walked around it and sat next to you. Grabbing the vibrating object on the coffee table he gazed at you darkly.
"You're gonna owe me for this."
You bit your lip.  Turning to the tv you started to explain the controls of the game.
Yes. He accepted. He was playing Mario kart with you. You kept jumping in place.
After a good 40 minutes, ghost leaned forward. You had lost your gigglyness. You both were fighting for first place. You didn't even notice how serious ghost had gotten about this game. It didn't even hit you that he was actually enjoying himself.
"Fuckin hell…" he cursed.
You had your bottom lip into a torturing bite. It had turned a deep reddish color from all the times your adrenaline caused you to bite it.  You were kneeling on the couch next to him, too excited to even sit still.
Finally reaching the finish line you jumped happily. Ghost groaned, letting himself fall back into the couch. You leaned forward to him on all fours. He stared at your frame, eyes resting on your lips.
"I win lieutenant! You're gonna have to be better than that…" you teased a smirk on said lips.
Silence fell for a second. You saw the gaze he had on your lips. Did you hurt yourself? You let your tongue pass on it, not tasting any blood on it. The move made him frown.
"Ghost..?" You asked, unsure if he was mad.
He glanced up. His gaze had darkened and it sent a delicious shiver down your spine. But as quickly as you noticed it, it was gone. Perhaps you had imagined it.
"Revenge?" He asked.
You smiled. Shaking the thought off your mind.
"You bet!"
___
You stared at the screen in front of you. You wanted to finish the stupid report on your latest task. Unfortunately your mind kept running over the latest events.
Things had remained pretty friendly with Ghost. The teasing, the gaming and sharing food. But for the past week something had changed.
You clung to the blanket covering your shoulders as you sat on the couch. The file opened on your lap. The cold had settled slowly, December finally rolling in. You wondered if it would snow this year.
Ghost had been distant. Cold. You tried not to take it personally because he probably had his own problems. But he hadn't eaten dinner with you for the past two days. He had brought breakfast and left for base without even sitting next to you.
You were worried… deep down, you were hurt. You missed the small bits of attention, his presence… you missed him. You sighed. Trying to focus back on the report.
A soft knock on the door made you frown, looking up. You sat there for a few seconds before another knock was heard. Dropping the file on the coffee table, you walked up to the door, unlocking it and opening it.
A man stood there, clearly a soldier from the base. His beard and funny hat made you smile.
"Oh… hi, I think I got the wrong apartment…" he said with the most adorable smile you saw on a man.
"Hi, who are you looking for? Maybe I can help." You answered.
"Hmm, I'm looking for Lieutenant Riley."
You nodded.
"You are in the right place actually. But he's not home at the moment."
The man stared at you for a moment.
"You… you are the roommate?"
You chuckled.
"You make it sound like I'm the Boogeyman… yes, I am the roommate." You smiled.
He chuckled.
"Well. It's a surprise and a pleasure to meet you. I'm captain John price" He presented his hand to you.
You extended yours to shake it.
"I'm… hum… sparrow…" you answered awkwardly with a sorry look.
He nodded, understanding the situation.
"Would you like to come in? He should be home soon." You invited.
"Oh, thank you, unfortunately I have somewhere else to be. He asked me to drop this file."
You looked down at the file, a big red 'confidential' stamped on it.
"Could you give it to him when he gets home? "
"Sure! No problem." You smiled, grabbing the file he was giving you.
"But… I have to ask. Don't open it. I trust that you'll do what's best. " He eyed you maliciously, without any hint of threat or negativity.
"Yes sir." You smiled.
He nodded one last time before bidding his goodbye.
Stepping back inside, you closed the door behind you. You slightly jumped as your phone rang. You cursed internally, this day was just stretching itself to no end.
Half an hour later you were dressed and ready to go to the base. There was an immediate need for your presence because of a potential security breach. You had dressed quickly, grabbing laptop, tablets and other electronics that might help you. Running around the living room, desperately trying to hurry up without forgetting anything. Throwing your coat on the counter, the sound of paper falling to the ground made you halt.
"God I hate this fucking report!"
Spinning around and dropping to the floor you started grabbing each sheet of paper, desperately trying to make them slip back into the file.
Suddenly you froze. The big red confidential staring at you. Oh no… no no no…
It wasn't your file. It wasn't your damn report.
"Fuck…"
"What the fuck are you doing?!"
You jumped, eyes flashing with shock as you noticed ghost standing at the entrance of the hallway.
"I-its not what you think! I made it fall! I swear I-"
"Shut up!"
You froze. The sting of the anger in his voice hurt a lot more than you expected.
He rushed to the ground next to you, grabbing every piece of paper, snatching the ones in your hand before standing up.
"Wait ! Please I-" you tried.
"I told you to shut up." He barked.
"Just let me explain!" You insisted.
"Explain what?!"
"I wouldn't do that to you ghost! We're …" you looked up at him from the ground, pleading eyes.
"What? Friends? You think we're friends?"
You bit your lip.
"We're not. Fucking wake up. And stay away from my shit." He snapped.
You sat there in shock as he walked past you. The sound of his bedroom slamming marking the start of the waterfalls. The silent tears burnt your cheeks.
Your phone rang once again, reminding you of your little emergency. You stood up in a hurry, grabbing all your things, slamming the front door on your way out.
You glanced at your watch. 2 am. You had been programming and coding for the past 6 hours, with very little breaks. You were exhausted. But the security breach had been fully secured and you had found a few clues on what or who was behind it.
It was time to head back home and let the rest of the team work on it.
Somehow you were anxious. You hoped he was asleep. That you could get in without facing him. You wanted to apologize again. You were mixed between fury and pain.
If you were honest you had been getting attached to him… you were enjoying spending time with him… how could you possibly think that he… would feel the same.
You bit your lip once more, trying to keep the tears at bay.
Turning the key in the lock you stepped inside the quiet house. Not a sound or a light. You sighed. Walking in the living room, flipping the switch, you looked around the now bright room. Everything was as you left it. Had he dinned?
You stepped in further into the room, dropping your coat on the couch. You let the silence drown you. Your eyes felt heavy.
You walked toward the fridge to grab a glass of water, noticing the file on the counter.
No red letters on top, and no report. It was a different file. This time you purposely opened it.
"Mission informations… south.. america?"
You blinked. He was gone. He went on a mission. He had left. Without a word. Or a text.
The first tears felt bitter. Rage first. And then sadness. He didn't care… he never did…
Worry settled in now… what if he never came back? No. No!
You sat on the stool, now fully crying. He was gone. Eyes glancing at the little wrapped gift next to your bag.
"Riley you stupid idiot…"
Adam slowly becomes more tolerate and less misogynistic over time via osmosis but won't admit it and instead hides it.
Adam thinks women bitch too much about the pink tax until he's sent out to get period products for Reader and Lute, only to realise that his cost of his shopping just doubled in price from just one pack.
Adam thinks women bitch too much about not being welcomed to normally male occupied spaces until he's playing late night online and hears a woman join only to leave after five minutes because everyone kept harassing them.
Adam hounds a girl for her number, thinking that he's so smooth for getting it in the end, but then decided to lose it after watching a film with Reader and Lute where it showed a girl terrified of what would happen if she didn't give a guy her number and hears Reader and Lute, two very capable women, talk about how they've been in similar positions.
Adam has done a lot of thinking lately.
Personally, I'd like to think that Heaven, while flawed, is above some of the nonsense like the pink tax. I do still think catcalling and being harassed happens, probably mainly in result to a lot of men modeling Adam's behavior.
But once he gets with you and you start calling him on his shit, and therefore Lute gets more comfortable calling him out, and especially after the period simulator, he's more aware of certain things.
I feel like eventually he'd ask you if this is how bad it is now, what did you do when you were alive? When you had to work constantly, sometimes 2 jobs at a time, just to afford basics. That's when you tell him you didn't really have a choice but to suck it up. That you weren't allowed to get a hysterectomy, you couldn't take sick days just for a period, and that most doctors wouldn't believe you anyway.
Especially if you're a trans person this is a big foot in the door to explaining how poorly women and queer people are treated. Hit em with the fact that religious nuts use Adam and God as examples for their behavior and he's going to feel physically sick. I think he'd have to take a few days to just be by himself and really think about how he acts and how people interpret that.
From there it's a slow build up to correcting his behavior. And it's not always gonna be easy. He's going to be defensive, he'll tell you that you're overreacting and that him persistently following a girl around to ask her for her number repeatedly isn't bad, it shows he's interested. He's a nice guy.
Tell him that's what other men thought too until "insert any woman you can think of who was assualted".
Lute's more direct, she sits his ass down and has him watch as many true crime stories of women getting kidnapped, SA, tortured, and murdered as she can find. Usually she picks ones based off the names you drop. He really only has to hear 4 or 5 before it sinks in. (Tiktok reminded me of the girl who was tortured to death for 45 days and assualted with lit fireworks so, have that fresh horror in your minds).
Tell him about any personal experiences you had and how terrifying it is to be a woman or queer. Show him the responses to the man or the bear question. Let him fully realize how many people, people he knows as strong and capable, would rather face the bear because "the worst the bear can do is kill me". Or "Nobody accuses me of liking being attacked by a bear"
"No one asked me what I was wearing when the bear attacked"
"People would actually believe me if I said I was attacked by a bear."
"The bear sees me as a person."
"The bear lives in the woods, the man probably followed me."
Each answer is gonna send a new shiver down his spine.
Reforming Adam isn't an easy or fast process but it's fully possible because I don't think he's bad or a fullblown narcissist. I think he's been told his entire existence that he's a good guy, a pinnacle of creation, someone to be admired and obeyed without question.
You could argue he may be a bit controlling and narcissistic because of how he treated Lillith and requested a submissive wife with Eve. And I don't think he's ever not going to be full of himself and expect his ideal partner to be a bit more traditional in the sense that they're a housewife/domestic type. But he also likes people who go out and have fun, can get wild, and he definitely thinks it's hot if you can defend yourself even if it strokes his ego if you let him do it.
But overall, I think with enough time, patience, and exposure Adam could become a better person. Probably the type who would throw hands with himself if he could. Definitely becomes the type to start borderline hating other men.
Adding onto that other ask, about horror films- what would be the gang’s reaction to a person, like me, who will watch anything, good or bad, just as long as it HAS gore in it? It’s not because I feel it’s like cool, or edgy, to like gore- I’ve just got an uncomfortably strong, autistic fascination with anything remotely morbid or upsetting- for reasons unbeknownst to me, I cannot help myself, I just get so happy and interested sdjg bonus points for any practical effects 👍🏻
A/N: I don't blame you, practical effects are awesome
RACEWAY AU REACTS TO AN EXTREMELY GORY MOVIE
CAINE: He is extremely uncomfortable watching humans being torn apart in horrifically painful ways, but feels awkward about just leaving after being invited to enjoy a movie.
POMNI: If the story is good, she'll stay. Otherwise, nah. She leaves.
RAGATHA: Meh, the effects are decent, so she stays.
JAX: "Ooo, violence." Eats popcorn.
GANGLE: She will actually vomit. Doesn't matter if she knows it's fake.
ZOOBLE: Their eyes will give an expression of disgust before silently leaving the room.
KINGER: No bugs? He's bored. Bye.
GUMMIGOO: He'll watch if the movie's actually good, but will leave if it gets boring.
LOO: "Wow, that's a lot of syrup. I didn't know humans had that much inside of them." Munches candy.
SETH: He's straight up laughing if the practical effects aren't convincing. Otherwise, he is just enjoying the gorefest. He likes to picture it happening to a particular person.
ABEL: He silently enjoys the movie. Watching the way the killer tears his victims asunder, taking notes.
SLEEPOVER SWEETHEARTS
Tumblr media
summary— when wanda agrees to do your makeup during a sleepover, she’s thrilled at the chance to spend time with her crush. little does she know, you have a confession of your own to make.
pairing: wanda maximoff x reader
warnings: none that i know of! just fluff! <3
a/n: hiii this is my first fic ever! something short, hope you enjoy!
word count: 0.9k
Wanda had always been a bit shy around her crush, Y/N L/N.
Like her, you were a more recent addition to the team, but you joined the Avengers a little earlier. The two of you became closer and quickly developed a good friendship as a result of being able to relate to one another and share this new world of fighting crime.
You were the definition of cool: smart, confident, and kind. Wanda couldn't help but admire you.
She had absolutely no idea that you admired her just as much as she did you, leading to an unknowingly mutual pining between the two of you.
So when you invited Wanda over for a sleepover in your room, Wanda was thrilled. She couldn't wait to spend the evening hanging out with you, even if it meant enduring a few hours of horror movies (which Wanda secretly found terrifying).
As the two of you settled in for the evening, you commented, admiring Wanda's flawlessly drawn eyeliner and glossed lips, "You always look so lovely.”
Wanda felt her face blushing red at the compliment. She had spent hours earlier perfecting her makeup in hopes of impressing you that evening. She muttered, "Thanks," as her heart raced.
A few minutes later, you turned to Wanda with a grin. "Hey, do you think you could do my makeup like yours? I love the way it looks."
Wanda's heartbeat quickened. She had never done anyone else's makeup before, but she was giddy with excitement at the thought of being so close to you. "Yeah," she replied, trying to keep her voice as casual as possible.
Wanda pulled out her makeup bag as you leaned back on your pillow. She started meticulously applying foundation to your flawless complexion. She applied eyeliner, mascara, and blush while remaining silent, her hands working softly and precisely.
Wanda couldn't help but steal a glimpse, or maybe multiple glimpses, at your face while she was working. Wanda had a strong desire to touch you, run her fingers through your hair, and gush about how lovely you are,
but she didn't.
She simply concentrated on the task at hand, being extra cautious to make sure your makeup was as perfect as hers.
Finally, she leaned back, admiring her handiwork. You looked stunning—your eyes were smoky and dark, and your lips were perfectly glossy.
You sat up, gazing at yourself in the handheld mirror with a smile. "Wow, Wanda," you said, turning to look at her. "You're amazing. Thank you so much."
Wanda felt a sudden, overwhelming surge of joy wash over her body. She gave a hesitant but delighted "No problem; I'm glad you like it" in response.
As you guys settled in for the evening, Wanda couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. She had gotten to spend time with you, whom she had been in love with for a while now, and had even gotten to do your makeup. It was a small victory, but it made her heart sing.
Wanda felt her fingers brush against yours as you huddled close to one another to watch the horror movie. You didn't move away, and Wanda's fingers briefly intertwined with yours. Wanda's heart leaped for joy despite the small gesture.
There was a chance you could possibly feel the same way she did, she reasoned. Wanda had a sense of hope as you and her watched the movie together, thinking that perhaps more could come from this special night.
Wanda couldn't concentrate on the movie anymore. Her mind was racing with thoughts of you and what the small gesture might mean.
She wanted to ask you to confirm that you both were on the same page, but she didn't want to ruin the moment.
You smiled, turning to Wanda after the film’s credits began rolling. You shivered, whispering, "That was terrifying."
Wanda laughed, feeling relieved that the film was over. "Yeah, I'm not a big fan of horror movies either."
You shifted closer to Wanda, and she felt her heart race. You tell her softly, "Thanks for doing my makeup tonight, I really, really appreciate it. I feel so pretty."
Wanda's heart swelled with happiness. "You are beautiful," she said, quietly enough that you could just barely hear her.
You're relieved you did hear Wanda, because those words were enough to push you to have the courage to say the words you were about to tell her.
Your eyes search Wanda's as you face her. "I've been meaning to tell you something."
Wanda's heartbeat quickened. Were you about to admit your feelings?
You continued, fumbling with your hands, "I love you, Wanda. I’ve loved you for the longest time.”
Wanda's mouth fell open in shock. "You... you do?"
You nodded, your eyes shining. "I know we've been friends for a while now, but I can't help the way I feel. And just being with you tonight made me realize that I had to tell you."
Wanda's heart soared. "Y/N, I feel the same way," she said, feeling tears prick at the corners of her eyes.
Your face lit up with a smile. "Really?"
Wanda nodded, feeling a sense of relief and joy wash over her. "Yes, really. I've felt this way for so long, but I was too scared to say anything."
Wanda felt how delicate your lips were as you leaned in and kissed her. The two of you beamed at eachother as you both pulled away.
For a moment, it felt as though you were the only two people in the world; surrounded by a bubble of your new-found happiness.
“I’m so glad I told you,”
“Me too.”
A Plebian's Review of the Last Voyage of the Demeter
I don't do reviews normally but I have many thoughts I wanted to share after recently watching this movie. In general, I did enjoy this movie and I thought it was a fun watch. As someone who read Dracula and enjoys most modern Dracula stories I would watch it again if it came on. (6/10)
Non-spoilers:
It took some liberties with the source material. Combine the recent Poirot movies with modern vampire lore and that's what you should expect, not something strictly adhering to the novel. Not necessarily a bad thing, but if you're enjoying dracula daily just know this isn't really that.
On that note, Dracula bibliophiles aside, it's a pretty good movie on its own. It's suited for modern audiences and won't confuse them with Stoker's vampire lore (ex. what can and can't kill a vampire, what powers Dracula has).
It had pretty gory moments that you may not be prepared for if slasher movies aren't something you watch. Also, check out doesthedogdie bc there are a lot of potential triggers.
The lighting for this movie was really good imo. There was a strong contrast between day and night which awesome, but you could also still actually see what was going on in the dark. There were a couple times when Dracula was in a shadow and you couldn't really see him but it was for effect as opposed to trying to be "realistic" (looking at you, GOT).
The design for Dracula was cool and they do play into him getting stronger and scarier as he continuously feeds.
The Captain is not the main character (in contrast to the source material's Captain's log). Here, it's Dr Clemens we follow and we get an occasional Caltain's narration from the log.
If you like Until Dawn and other titles from Supermassive Games, you'd probably enjoy it. Dracula's design, the kills, and character choices feel like you're watching a playthrough. Not to mention there are a lot of close-up shots of characters in the same way Supermassive Games does.
Spoilers under the cut:
The Good:
The cinematography was pretty good. I particularly liked shots that followed through the ship to the cargo hold where count bat boi was sleeping.
They also filmed the gory scenes really well, and one scene that stood out was when one person who's become a thrall bashes his head through a door and then slides his nose along the splintered panels as he looks up. Impactful to say the least. They didn't pan away and leave it up to our imaginations but went all in and I applaud it.
Things were recognizable from the novel (names, events, some vampire mythos). I was genuinely surprised that they marked Dracula's coffins with dragons and kept that he slept in dirt, since modern audiences probably wouldn't have known about these things. When we (modern audiences) hear "Dracula" we think it means "vampire" as opposed to "dragon", and we would likely expect Dracula's cargo to be velvet-lined coffins.
The opening scene (finding the ship at Whitby & the wagon train of the coffins) had me immediately invested and excited, and I was already looking forward to this movie (I chose it over Barbie lol).
The Captain's actor was phenomenal. He went all out when he was grieving Toby's death and he really didn't have to but I'm so glad he did. While the character itself wasn't consistent, the actor made it believable. He was strict and kind when he was sane, he was frantic and distraught when he was insane, and his moments of grief and hope were all palpable. Good choice.
"Oh my God it has wings" When I say I LAUGHED SO HARD
Honestly there were a lot of funny moments. Some were genuine to cut the tension and help build characters but being ND and desensitized to horror I don't know if I was supposed to laugh at some of them, like when the cook's dingy knocked against the side of the hull. And when vampire Toby jumped up.
The use of knocking was a cool addition. I enjoyed when they used it like when Toby was in trouble and when Dracula was messing with the two dudes on deck.
One of the key things of Dracula's personality is that yes - he can kill you in 10s - but he won't because he's a sadistic bastard that enjoys drawing it out and playing the wager to see if you'll die of fear before he can bite you. They absolutely captured it. Homie is purposeful in how he terrifies his victims before giving them a gruesome death.
I think the model ship they showed at the end was the original model ship for the Demeter in the 90's Dracula movie (or at least a nod to it), which is how this movie was started apparently. Nice touch.
The Grievances:
Dr Clemens was a mary sue. I'm sorry, there's no way around this. Man has bad main character syndrome. I can accept a black man fighting tooth and nail to graduate Cambridge top of his class and struggle in a world that won't see his abilities because they won't look past his skin color, but on top of that he's an astronomer, a sailer, a strategist, a detective, and everyone immediately falls in love with him? Hell, he cured Toby's [1] grief over losing his lifelong friend (Huck, the dog, who was MUTILATED) and [2] guilt for all the animals dying because it was his responsibility to take care of him, and [3] fear for whatever unknown thing did this, with a headpat and "sometimes shit happens and you can't do anything about it".
He took one look at Anna, Dracula's beef jerky ration, and immediately went "she has an infection, she needs a blood transfusion", then proceeded to give her repeated transfusions over several days and he was totally fine. Up running around and fighting vampires meanwhile in reality he would have been bedridden from lack of blood and possible complications from the procedures.
Also, why is he the only clean person? Everyone's covered in grime and blood and dude looks like he just walked out of a proactive commercial. Even when he's floating in the middle of the ocean for days with an open neck wound he looks like he was just in the shower. Compare it with the Captain's burns and the first thrall's face after banging the through a door and the dissonance just pulls me out of the movie.
Keeping him alive just to sequel bait. Just. Why. Hollywood, it's okay to kill your protagonist. 1912 did it really well. Plus, I personally wasn't invested enough in this character to want to see a sequel following his vendetta with Dracula. We already know about Jonathan and Van Helsing. You can make movies that stand alone. It's okay.
If you want to sequel bait why don't you have him delirious from being lost at sea for several days and end up at the asylum with Dr Seward and Renfield? That would actually be cool and you could still have Dracula show up to taunt him.
Also, in regards to Anna, while I think it was a cool idea to use her for lore dumping and as a surprise for the audience, I was disappointed with her. She had the potential to provide a lot of info and help fight Dracula but instead she had to be the "strong independent woman". I don't hate this trope (think about Ripley in Alien, or any of the women in the original novel) but it wasn't done well here. While it's cool to see her gain confidence and wield a gun against count bat boi I was really hoping she would provide more info like his weaknesses. She says "he ran out of food in my country" but we know this isn't *literally* true because we see people at the beginning. It's the fact her people knew how to keep Dracula away that he ran out of food and he decided to try greener pastures. You could bring up HOW they did that (religious tokens, garlic, silver, etc.).
Also when she does try to give info about Dracula it's still vague and meant to be mysterious. Bruh, you are locked on a boat with this monster and you know your only hope for survival is to flee or work together to get rid of him. Why are you not giving as much info and details as possible? Because that's what the script said bc the writers wanted to make dracula look cool by relying on the characters to say it? Okay.
This movie relies on a lot of telling instead of showing. It's like they don't trust their audience to pay attention or understand what's going on. The only time I legit felt they showed and not told (lol) was when the Captain asked if what happened to the animals could be transmitted to humans and Dr Clemens lied and said no. You could see in the actor's face the inner monologue of telling the truth vs preventing chaos. It was nice and gave more info about the character than him actually yelling his life history at the first mate.
It also suffers from the writers trying to make every scene be memorable. There are too many times characters say things because it sounds cool or would be good in the trailer rather than because it makes sense for the character to say that.
Honestly all the characters fall flat for me (besides the captain who's character is treated like a pinball). They're all archetypes rather than people. The protagonist. The independent woman. The racist drunkard. The child. The religious guy. The guy that makes obscene jokes. The only names I know are Toby, Dr Clemens, and Anna. Bc they get said a lot as opposed to me actually caring about them.
On that note, I am definitely biased because I loved the Captain's log from the novel, but I wish that this was from the Captain's pov, culminating in him tying himself to the wheel and dying from shock or exposure like in the book. Then Whitby.
On that note, I am still upset that they used modern vampire mythos yet again for Dracula. In the book the Captain dies after being taunted for days by Dracula after tying himself to the wheel, only possible because the rosary in his hand protects him. It's a noble but horrific sacrifice made of fear and a duty to not let the evil on the ship reach land. In this movie, however, he reaches the wheel and dies because the rosary has no power over Dracula (it's also how Toby dies).
Oh, also the sun kills vampires. How do we know? Because occasionally some people turn into vampires, but only when it's convenient for the plot (looking at you, Anna). Why don't they use this against Dracula and dump the dirt box they know he's sleeping in during the day? Who knows. But they wasted a lot of potential to play on the audience's expectations (rather than giving into them) by using Dracula during the day. Y'know what's scarier than a vampire picking off your crew at night? A vampire picking off your crew at ANY time when you only expect it at night because SURPRISE sunlight just doesn't let him crawl in lizard fashion.
Are you seriously telling me Dracula sustained himself off of Anna for several weeks, and then decided to slaughter the crew mere days before the boat docked? Yes, he was weak bc of it but I don't think the director knows how blood works (see Dr Clemens's transfusion issue). Also, if that's the case, how did Anna not suffocate in her dirt box for hours on end for weeks? Just fill the other 48 crates with dead people and say Anna was the last caprisun in the box and it would make more sense.
Also, why have their last hurrah be the day before they reach Whitby? It made the movie seem too fast; it felt like it only took a week to get from Transylvania to England. Why not find Anna early on, then disperse the crew member deaths across a couple weeks like in the novel? It would help with the suspense and you could have the Captain tie himself to the wheel then let us experience the time passing after he dies so the audience has a moment to sit with the deaths and feel hopeless. Bc that's what the role of the Demeter is, story-wise. It's supposed to make us afraid of Dracula and feel hopeless in his presence. Not give us hope and make him into our rival we have the possibility to get revenge on. That's what our dear friend Jonathan is for.
Dracula never takes human form. Why do all adaptations refuse to give him his bushy mustache? COWARDS.
Okay, he *sort of* takes human form. But they really just put him in a waistcoat and top hat then expected us to believe that showed he was cunning. You literally said he's both man and beast then only show the beast. One of Dracula's main appeal is that he's clever and his sadistically human traits are the only thing preventing him from immediately ripping you to shreds. And he can pass as human, so he could be anyone. Yet we only see the beast part.
While this movie was fun to watch, it comes off more as a gruesome drama or action movie than a horror. I never really feel any suspense or dread. Compare it to Alien which had the same situation. Alien did such a good job of making you feel scared and claustrophobic when you're surrounded by the vastness of space (in this case, the ocean) and being hunted down by an intelligent monster. I was watching this to see how Dracula killed people rather than seeing how they struggled to survive.
I can believe this movie was in production hell not just because of the writing but some errors. In one scene, the Captain's burn is on the right side of his face but there's a close-up cut and suddenly it's on the left side like someone flipped the screen. And this is just one error out of a couple. No Starbucks cups tho.
It sounds like I don't like this movie because of all of my nit-picking grievances, but I really did like it. I think my issues are just because my expectations were too high going in. I was expecting a loyal expansion of an underappreciated segment of a classic novel, which is really rare these days. And a *suspenseful* horror.
I see why Guillermo del Toro and Stephen King suggested it. It's pretty similar to their stuff, just more fast-paced. So if you like that stuff and Until Dawn I think you'll really enjoy it.
🧚‍♀️ Anon
To be honest I’m a little unsure for a Part 1 for Sins of the Father (I really love that title though)
So I’m completely fine and curious about what you would write for it (I currently have no ideas at the moment for SotF but I might get some later, I might need to watch the newer Scream Movies)
Here are a few ideas I have though in general, I’d like to hear what you think
Mostly I can see Darling use her mother’s last name to hide being related to Kira
Does Darling move back to Morioh?
What if the shock of the murders results in a Horror Movie being put in production (Maybe it’s called ‘Morioh Massacre’ or something) and a bunch of rumors spread about it being based on a True Story about Morioh’s infamous Serial Killer
I definitely like the parallel with Kira, Darling just wants to have a normal life (But unlike her father she doesn’t have his murderous impulses, but maybe she did inherit his rage whenever she feels like she can’t get away from his legacy) only someone in Morioh is after her, calling her, cryptic messages and gruesome murders whenever she goes
Maybe this is how her Stand finally manifests (Her Stand has always been apart of her life when Kira got it, but either she’s never been strong enough to fully manifest it or she new about its existence but never could grasp it’s full potential and abilities until her life was threatened and thrown into turmoil)
Darling uses her Horror Movie trivial, sarcasm and dry humor as a coping mechanism (In reality she’s angry and tired, but she doesn’t want to be the helpless victim, especially since she knows they’re always the first to die)
Maybe Josuke knew Darling? But she was known as that quiet nerdy girl? (His mom and her mom knew each other, before her disappearance) Maybe Josuke and Darling we’re friends but grew apart when she had to move away because of the bullying?
I wasn’t very sure with this and I just wrote a few ideas (My mind kinda went ham)
Also that fanart you drew was very cute I liked it a lot
Ok so I have a few idea, still want to keep things cryptic for now.
Reader was in her last year of middle school when the truth of yoshikage Kira came out and due to her last name this led to a lot of negative attention. Thus her grandparents moved and had her last name changed to her mothers.
I'm thinking that darling knows who Josuke was as he was a year above them. Probably though word of mouth as well as seeing him after leaving class but they never knew eachother personally. Perhaps Josuke knows her through association due this grandfather being friends with her grandparents, he probably saw a couple of photos that his mother had been shown. Perhaps even a slight push to befriend her but didn't do so.
I'm thinking that After graduation Josuke may have taken a gap year to America to see his dad and such before going to university and ending up in the same course not entirely sure on the subject yet.
The horror movie idea is really interesting. Perhaps it's brought up by a work colleague. They're really excited and start going on about it and darling is saying some stuff that is out of character from what they know. Leading to them asking why they aren't interested.
"Oh I just think it's a bit exploitive" she'd say.
"But you really like chainsaw massacre and that's kinda based off of Ed Gein" they'd point out. (It was the only example I could come up rn with that wasn't an out right exploitation film)
Perhaps it's brought up the case again as well and some of former students of the middle school bring up that there was a girl there related to him. She might even be confronted by a relative of one of the victims.
Putting her really on edge and Josuke might just walk in on a situation without context and immediately rush in to help. And probably gets some clues that she's being stalked or harassed.
Her stand probably developed after a particular incident back in marioh cho before leaving, she'd had hit her breaking point and retaliated against one if the other student. Her first outburst. After she left she started to receive texts and most likely followed by subsequent injuries. Act 2 probably developed a few years later after another incident. Perhaps her stand was trying to get revenge on someone on her behalf. (Sometimes it targets particular people who threaten darling, other times it chooses random victims)
Thanks for liking the design I came up with, currently sharing my laptop with my partner so I can't use it as often. If I could I would have done some photo bashing to get a idea for act 3s Appearance.
Arkhelios Adventures
Tumblr media
Just after midnight, Evren decided to raid the refrigerator. Endless thoughts ran uninterrupted through his head from Reogus' visit. Adrian's snoring wasn't helping much either.
Tumblr media
"Can you see them? They've come home."
Tumblr media
Evren spun around to see his stepdaughter, Adrienne, staring in his direction. Not staring at him per se, it was more like she was staring through him, her eyes focused on something behind him that only she could see.
"Rien, honey, it's past your bedtime," he said quietly. "Every one is in bed. No one is outside, I promise. Your dad and I will keep you safe."
Rien had episodes like this from time to time and while they were unnerving at best and terrifying at worst, they usually passed without incident. Everyone gave Rien her space and she usually calmed down after disappearing for some time to sort out her emotions.
"Why don't you get some warm milk and head back to bed?" Evren suggested. "I could use some myself. Sit down at the table and I'll make some for you."
Tumblr media
"Life is being called towards death. There needs to be balance. There needs to be order. I can fix it, I know I can."
Evren nodded as he poured the milk into a glass.
"I'm sure you can, but it's past your bedtime. It will have to wait for tomorrow. Here's your milk. Do you want me to stay up with you?"
Adrienne shook her head and took a seat at the table.
"No, I'm okay. I can drink my milk alone. I'm almost a teenager, after all."
Evren nodded. This wasn't the first time he'd caught Adrienne up in the middle of the night spouting phrases straight out of a horror film. It certainly wouldn't be the last either. All of her parents agreed that the behavior was concerning, but harmless. It wasn't like she was sneaking off in the middle of the night, chasing danger like Theo might.
"Straight to bed when you're finished," Evren ordered. "Goodnight, Rien. Your father and I both love you very much. We're always here when you need us."
Adrienne nodded quickly, making a show of sipping her drink.
"Goodnight."
Leo Toyonaga surveyed the house before him cautiously. As Lukas was fond of reminding him, Leo, his father, and his first born child, Varia, all were destined to serve the deity of life and preserve the order of the universe. Much like the reapers obeyed the Grim Reaper, who served Death, Leo came from a long line of guardians genetically called to protect the living. It was a thankless calling that didn't pay well and involved incredible danger, all to serve a deity who wasn't a fan of showing support or sharing attention.
Leo honestly didn't mind being called to such a dangerous duty. It was what he was born for, to help people and protect those he loved. His own father, Vrai, tried his best to pass his share of that sacred duty to his son. Vrai had nearly died serving Life and had to abdicate his Strangetown throne in order to continue serving. Lukas had taken and taken from him over the years, and now Vrai considered himself retired. That was one of the perks of dating the Grim Reaper. Gee could usually get his stepparent to leave Vrai alone, no matter how much Lukas whined.
But tonight, Leo needed a second pair of eyes. He could feel something wrong somewhere in Twikkii Island. A storm was brewing and it was driving Leo crazy. The past few days had been filled with migraines, visions that he suspected were prophetic, and a general feeling of uneasiness. If he wanted it all to stop, he would need to resolve the problem. He was certain that his father still felt the call to Twikkii Island like he did, despite denying it. Life's guardians were called to serve for life, despite Vrai's "retirement".
Tumblr media
"Are you sure it's this street?" Vrai asked, scanning the street for signs of supernatural involvement. "It looks pretty calm."
Leo rolled his eyes.
"You can feel it, same as me. Of course it's here."
"Maybe it's a trick Lukas is playing on us. Some kind of performance evaluation. For this pull to be so strong...it has to be a test."
Tumblr media
"It's not a test, my grandparents are just returning home."
Both men were startled by a preteen standing on the stairs, staring intently at them. Beside her, two spirits floated around the yard.
"Holy shit," Leo gasped, stunned by the scene before him. "Ghosts? Actual ghosts? Where are the reapers? Who's supposed to be watching for this?"
Tumblr media
"Me, I guess. Life has been called towards death, and I can help you find the balance."
The girl watched them with curiosity. She was younger than Leo's oldest daughter, but not by much. She was maybe twelve at most.
"Just wait a minute, I have to get my coat."
The preteen slipped away for a moment, leaving the adults baffled at what to do next.
"We need to do something," Leo declared, staring at his father for ideas. "Should you call Gee? Let him know that ghosts have been seen in the living world?"
Vrai frowned.
"This isn't the first time spirits have been sighted. It's been happening everywhere. Gee has been trying to find the cause for a while now. The last thing he needs is for his father to find out."
"We can't command the dead!" Leo hissed. "He's going to have to call a reaper here to clean this up. This shouldn't be happening, Dad. If Gee can't fix this, maybe he shouldn't be the Grim Reaper."
"Try to control them," Vrai urged, suddenly interested in doing his job. "I'll help, but it's been a while. You'll need to start and I'll jump in when I can."
Tumblr media
Leo grit his teeth, but nodded his agreement. It was nice to have his father on his side, even if it was only to protect his partner. Leo reached within himself, searching for any possible ability he possessed that could fix this problem.
Energy. Everything in the universe could be broken down into energy. Every single bit of energy all flowed through the Ocean, tying it all together. Leo could feel the life on the air around him. Plants, insects, and animals- they all answered his call without problem. The two spirits were completely unmoved.
"Let me help."
Vrai extended his hand, hoping that teamwork would somehow bridge the gap between life and death.
It was no use. Whatever limited contact they could make with the spirits was failing. Not only that, but both men were quickly losing control of the energy they could command. Leo's hands were burning as the absence of life in the spirits overpowered the living energy he was trying to command them with.
"I can't keep this up," he grunted. Beside him, Vrai looked equally overwhelmed. "Not even Lukas could pull this off, it's not our jurisdiction. You need to call Gee. If not him, then at least the head reaper of Twikkii Island. Someone qualified needs to fix this."
Tumblr media
"I got my coat!"
The preteen's happy chirp interrupted the two Toyonaga's panicked discussion. Adrienne dropped dramatically to the ground, perfectly poised to take command of the situation.
"Dad says not to go out at night without a coat. The ocean makes everything colder at night. My name's Rien, by the way. Those are my grandparents floating around. They're just lost and confused; it's not their fault."
Tumblr media
"Grandma! Grandpa! You have to listen to me. You're not supposed to be here. You need to rejoin the spirits."
Adrienne began to levitate, summoning energy that appeared to redirect the aimless floating of the spirits. While Leo watched in awe at her effortless control of the spirits of her grandparents, he couldn't help but notice the smooth horns that had appeared on her head while she did so. It wasn't a true dark form, at least as far as Leo understood the concept. Besides, weren't demons loosely connected with life, not death? What was happening to the world that he thought he'd understood? Ghosts were everywhere, demons were commanding the dead...what could possibly be next? Did Lukas know about this? Did Death?
Tumblr media
"Go in peace, Grandpa. Dad and Luci will carry your legacy until you meet again. The Siew family still stands together, just like you always told Dad. You can let go. We'll be fine."
With her words, the spirit shimmered slightly before dissolving completely before the mesmerized Toyonagas' eyes. Both ghosts were gone, no effort required on their part.
Tumblr media
"It was nice meeting you," Adrienne said, with all the proper manners expected of a young noble lady of Twikkii Island. "I should probably go back to bed now that the spirits are at rest."
"What-what did you just do? Demonic magic can't-"
"I'm a Bellamy," the girl stated, as if it should be obvious. "There's lots that I can do that most demons can't. My brother's not the only one who can get things done."
"Your brother?" Vrai asked. Already, this little excursion of theirs had turned from casual to mysterious and troubling. He didn't really need to add demon drama to it if he didn't have to.
"Theodosius," Leo supplied, looking at the sister of such a being warily. Everyone had heard of the little demon hybrid in his circles. His kids played with Theo at the Siew cottage and occasionally had lessons together at school. Theo was quickly becoming a project of Lukas', which was never a good thing, no matter who you were. Theo had been cursed to create his powers, while this girl didn't show any sign of a curse. She simply...was. Leo wasn't sure if that was better or worse for him. Curses were indeed powerful, but Theo was at least trying to control his. There was no controlling the natural gifts of this girl by any method Leo knew about. Clearly, this Bellamy family warranted keeping an eye on.
Tumblr media
"Yeah, my brother's Theo," Adrienne confirmed, still cheerful despite having just seen the ghosts of her grandparents float across her yard. "He's away at school right now. I miss him."
Leo smiled politely.
"I'll bet. Well, thank you for your help, Rien. We couldn't have done it without you."
The two men looked at each other, beyond ready to leave this place. Leo had a mountain of paperwork to try to explain what had happened, which would hopefully escalate the issue of wandering spirits past the level of regular reapers. If this was happening everywhere, something had to be wrong, and Leo didn't share his father's optimism about Gee's ability to handle the situation.
"It was nice meeting you," Adrienne replied. "I'll be sure to let Lukas know how helpful you've been next time I see them. Things seem to be getting worse lately, but my brother's coming home soon. Maybe he could help a little, but by then, it will already be too late. See ya!"
The girl spun around and bolted up the stairs to her home, leaving the two men baffled.
"Be too late for what?!"
Plopping back down onto the couch, Chris wrapped his burly arm around his smaller sized girlfriend, Jill, the two were embracing one another as their eyes were locked onto the little, mounted television, the movie playing was 'Nightmare on Elm Street', a classic horror film that surprisingly, the two hadn't seen yet, so they decided to binge some of the franchise together, it made for a perfect date night.
"The pizza I ordered is about thirty minutes away." Chris stated to Jill, his fingertips rubbing up and down her forearm. "How come it's so far away? Where's the nearest pizzeria?" Jill asked, her voice had a tint of curiosity fused into it. "Well, about an hour or so, but we got lucky, this is what I get for living out in the countryside." Chris laughed, kissing the top of Jill's hair, her hair smelling like coconut, which Chris was entranced by.
"I see... Makes sense." Jill responded, continuing to keep her head nuzzled on his shoulder, the movie still resuming in the background. The scene currently playing was showing Freddy, the main villain, he looked burnt, it reminded Jill of her cooking when she was younger. "Freddy looks like a lasagna I once made... No, I'm sorry, attempted to make." Jill giggled, causing Chris to snort alongside with her. "Funny girl." Chris whispered, his eyes focused on the tv.
Jill was never scared of horror movies, but the idea of some burnt, crispy old man haunting your dreams wasn't pleasant ; out of any horror villain, he's the one Jill thinks is the creepiest. As for Chris though, he isn't scared of any of these fools, especially after what he's been through. Ever since the Arklay incident and Rockfort, he hasn't feared much, he almost feels as though nothing can stop him. That could also be from Jill though, she makes him feel unstoppable.
"Isn't the thought of someone invading your dreams scary?" Jill questioned, looking up at Chris. "Little bit, yeah, but I don't have anything interesting going up in my noggin." Chris chortled, squeezing her arm with affection. "Oh, you don't dream of me?" Jill teased, slapping his thigh playfully. "Oh sweetheart, I definitely dream of you." He commented, the dirty joke plain in sight. "Oh you're bad." Jill laughed, hiding her head in his shoulder, her weeziness over coming her.
In all honesty, the two could barley keep their eyes on the movie, they just kept talking and missing important sections of it, but honestly, they didn't care, they were enjoying one on one time with each other, and that's all that matters to them. "Who do you think would win, Leather face or Freddy?" Jill questioned, beaming at her own silly question, it was an obvious answer. "Well, that's kind of tough..." "How so?" Jill asked again.
"Well, baby, Leather face is kind of dumb, which makes him vulnerable, then again he is strong, especially with that chainsaw. Freddy can haunt dreams and cause people to kill themselves, and since Leather face is already beaten up on enough by his family, it's a possibility. If we're talking hand to hand however, I believe Leather face wins." Chris explained, his points making more sense now. "Makes sense, we should watch the TCM series together, it's such a good classic." Jill stated. "Definitely." Chris muttered, his eyes gandering back up at the television in front of them.
Chris couldn't help but feel a warm pit in his stomach. He felt euphoric knowing he was alone, just with Jill. Spending time with her was his favorite thing in the entire world. "Wanna take a break from the movie, at least till the pizza arrives?" Chris questioned, standing off of the couch and stretching his jacked arms into the arm, his thin fabricated shirt lifting up, revealing his lower stomach religion. "Oh sure, and do what?" She asked aloud. "Come here hun." Chris requested, grabbing a red plaid blanket off of the couch. Jill obliged.
She was quite curious as to what Chris had in mind ; just as long as it wasn't sitting by the front porch light outside, those bugs would eat her alive, she hates the idea even. Chris, who was in front of Jill, grabbed a flashlight from the kitchen drawer, clicking it on and off a couple times to test if the battery had held up. "What do you need that for?" Jill wondered. "You'll see baby." Chris replied, pecking her cheek and opened the front door, which was right by the kitchen area.
"Come on now." Chris demanded, ambling outside with the girl right behind him as he stepped down his porch, the sound of cicadas and other little insects could be heard. Not only that, the occasional car passing by was loud, the cool night breeze made whistling noises as it flew right on past their faces, the feeling was refreshing. "Haven't done this in awhile." Chris spoke to himself, the blanket still on his left arm. "What is 'this' exactly?" Jill asked the man. "You're such an impatient girl, but I love it." Chris retorted.
There was a specific spot Chris was treading towards, so that he could lay the blanket out for the two of them to lay on. Chris used to star gaze with his younger sister, Claire Redfield, back when they were a bit younger. He always found it to be a kindred thing, it lifted his spirits. Although, the man couldn't name was constellation for you even if he tried. The most he could do was little dipper and big dipper.
Once he noticed the large, patchy grass in front of him, Chris tossed the blanket in the air, holding it by it's ends and gently laying it out, shuffling it around until it looked neat. "So are we just gonna lay here? I don't wanna get murdered, especially after just watching that movie." Jill tittered. "Oh, you'll be okay, I'm here." Chris whispered, taking her hand and sitting her down along side him, the both of them laying down side by side and staring up into the stary, ominous sky.
"Star gazing? How romantic." Jill teased him playfully, staring up at the teeny tiny stars that were miles and miles and miles away from them, it felt like she could just squeeze them till they pop if she squinted one eye. "Yeah... Thought it'd be nice, the downside is how cold it is." Chris chuckled, gazing at the sky with her, making note of the fact there were sadly no constellations, he had hoped but not everything comes true, does it?
"You're so sweet." Jill complimented him, turning her head to look at him, seeing how his face rested whilst looking up above. "I try." Chris spoke, not moving his eyes from the stars, even glancing at the bright, white moon. "You know any constellations?" Chris questioned her. "No, not really, only the basic ones... Never necessarily had the time to think about them, how they looked and where they are usually located at, y'know?" "I get that." Chris said, now peeping his eyes at her, in awe at how pretty she was.
Chris honestly felt like the luckiest man in the world. So many men had wanted Jill before, even asked her out. One time, when he and Jill, along with a couple friends were out at a bar, this dude came up and asked if she wanted to dance and get a drink, but she declined. This man was also tall, and good looking, it was surprising to Chris when she had did that, but he most definitely did not complain. He was the chosen one.
"I think you're very pretty." Chris praised Jill, not being able to resist the urge to say something about her ethereal beauty. Jill glanced over at Chris, a tint of blush forming on her cheeks. She wasn't the type to get flustered easily, but fuck she couldn't help it with Chris. "Thank you babe." Jill responded, whilst doing so, she slid her hand into his, allowing their fingers to intertwine with one another.
As the two held hands and star gazed, it felt so peaceful, as if it was just them all alone in the world. After the Arklay incident, they definitely got closer, and even more close after Chris returned from Europe. Jill knew she has loved Chris for a long time, and she's just ecstatic she finally gets to be with him. She hopes he feels the same way. When Chris had asked her out, everything she was dealing with at that very moment just suddenly faded and all that had mattered to her, was him. It's always gonna be him.
"Man, I hope that pizza comes soon, I'm starving." Chris joked, turning to officially face Jill, now laying on his side. Jill turned herself over too, looking at him with genuine love & care. "Yea, I could go for it too, but I don't know if I wanna keep watching that movie." Jill admitted. "How come? You scared?" Chris teased, squeezing her hand lovingly. "Oh quit! Definitely not, it's just not my cup of tea, that's all." Jill spoke truthfully. "I'll take your word for it." Chris responded, knowing she was being honest.
Jill placed her smooth, supple hand onto Chris's cheek, feeling the incoming scruff on it, caressing his cheek with earnest. Chris then placed his big hand upon her hip, pulling her into him more as he did so. Both leaned in at the same time, kissing each other with passion and loyalty. Jill felt as though she could simply melt into his arms, ditto for Chris.
Breathing in deeply, the man moved his hand to her upper back, ravishing in the feeling of her right in his arms, safe and sound, as she should be. Their lips continued to move softly against one another, neither even attempted to slip some tongue action in though, they were both too anxious. "I love you." Jill whispered, her forehead pressed against his, the wind was picking up now, almost as if it was matching the intense mood going on between them.
"I love you too." Chris quietly said back to her, his hand remaining on her waist. "I'm happy you were able to come over tonight... I have a question." Chris spoke, his voice timid. "Me too baby... Ask away." She muttered out, her doe-like eyes gazing at him with honest love. "Would you like to spend the night...? Here? I just think it's getting kind of late to drive yourself home, y'know..." He asked her, seeming nervous about the question and it's entirety.
"Oh, well, I don't see why not... Sure." She answered. Deep down, Jill felt utter glory with the fact he asked her that. She had wanted to ask before, many times when she'd come over, but she always felt as if it's be to early, or that he'd decline her offer. Jill felt full, full of love and contentness.
"What do ya say, we head back inside? Pizza should be here eventually anyways, and I don't know about you but I'm cold." Chris cackled, sitting up on the blanket and holding out his hand, it was stiff due to the temperature but the gesture was thoughtful. "Ha, yeah, I'm okay with going back inside." Jill responded, snickering along with him. The girl took the man's calloused hand and held it as they walked back into his home.
Chris had rough, calloused hands but to Jill, it was attractive. It showed how much of a hard working man he was ; ambitious was a trait she always seeked when getting with somebody. As the couple strided up the steps, Jill stopped and studied Chris for a moment before speaking, "Do you think you'll work in this field for the rest of your life? Or at least till you decide to retire?" She asked aloud, it was a random question, but also had so much tenderness to it. It was a deep thought Chris hadn't put a lot of time into thinking about.
"To be completely honest with you hun, I haven't thought about my future that much, especially the work side of things. To be more forward, most likely, yeah... I wanna serve this world justice, y'know?" Chris said, his words brave and full of passion, he was such a good person. "I agree... I wanna help out the world, especially since it's going to complete shit. Raccoon City was a disaster... Then Arklay..." Jill sighed out, clearly upset whilst thinking about both tragic events.
Watching as Jill put her head down, Chris placed his hand onto her shoulder, stroking it with carefulness. "Don't think about it too much sweetheart, it's the past now, I know it'll stick with you forever, but letting go is a solution." He said kindly, moving both of his hands to her cheeks, tilting her head up to look directly into his eyes. Jill encased her arms around his waist as she hugged him warmly.
The man expired to himself, his hands hugging her head, caressing her soft, brown hair as he did so. All Chris wanted was to take care of Jill, and to love her. Seeing her dwell on such horrific events killed him on the inside, honestly seeing her down in anyway hurt him, because in his eyes, she deserves nothing but eternal joy. Kissing the top of her head, he pulled away and said something that stuck with her, "You'll always be my safe space, I hope I'm yours too." Chris muttered out, his words were obviously so meaningful.
"You are, Chris." She mumbled, hugging him even tighter now. "Good." He whispered.
The two pulled away after about a minute, Chris broke the peaceful silence. "Let's get you inside, and under a blanket, we can watch something else too." Chris added, opening the front door and leading her inside. "Sounds like a plan." Jill laughed, following him and heaving as he closed the door with a final light push.
Now that i've watched every one piece movie that isn't a retelling of an anime arc or straw hat chase i'm gonna go ahead and indulge in the very human tendency of ranking them in order from best to worst (SPOILERS!!!!):
One Piece: Strong World. Maybe it's because this was the first movie i watched and my first experience with one piece in animation but strong world has remained my favorite since day one (though the second place is very very close i must say). The straw hats are all great and have their little moment to shine the plot is solid and they do a great job with nami, out of the four straw hats with a movie more focused on them she's by far the one that gets the best treatment. Strong world is in the perfect position of being a pre time skip movie, so it's not dragged down by the expanding cast of post time skip, but also since it was the tenth anniversary movie they put in more effort than with the previous movies and it shows. Also sanjis cowboy outfit instantly makes it top tier.
One Piece: Film Gold. I'm... kind of obsessed with this movie?? Seeing the straw hats in a heist really scratched an itch i didn't know i had but my god does it feel good. The designs really excelled here the crew looks gorgeous throughout the entire movie and tesoro's island is so interesting and fits very well in the one piece world. Tesoro is also my favorite villain of any movie, i've seen people say he's the perfect blend between crocodile and doffy and that's so true lmao. Loved having zoro as the damsell in distress, inject that shit straight into my veins i love it when the strong character is the one in need of rescue. Everyone was very cool during the heist but i remember really enjoying franky and luffy's dynamic cause lbr we're kinda starved of it in the manga so it was nice to see them interact so much here. Overall amazing movie and the only one i've rewatched out of all of them.
Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. This movie has become a cult classic amongst the fandom and with good reason. It breaks away from the loud spectacle of the other movies and is quieter and more unsettling and so far the only example of actual psychological horror in the lore. I've talked about this before but that final scene with the straw hats cheering luffy on even while they're being consumed by the baron and luffy struggling to the brink of death to save them changed me... I love seeing this family love each other so much!!
Clockwork Island Adventure. I know, I know what's the second movie doing so high up... but it was just so good!! It's very short but that's just a benefit to the plot and i love the gimmick of each straw hat being captured one by one till it's just luffy remaining and the one who has to free them (can you tell i love the movies where the straw hats are kidnapped and the others have to rescue them?? that's my drug). Sanji's fight in this movie kicks ass too, the animation is gorgeous.
One Piece: Film Red. This might seem like a sin, to have this movie so far down the list cause i've seen its pretty unanimously tied up with baron omatsuri as the best movie but to be honest i feel like that's just recency bias. The movie is still a spectacle and the songs slap and yes one of them was in the top 5 of my spotify wrapped this year lol. Uta is a good antagonist but i was never that hooked by her shared past with shanks and luffy, mainly because it's so aggressively impossible for it to be canon, it almost broke my suspension of disbelief. Zosan sleeping side by side was pleasing to my monkey brain and it almost made up for including st charlos in the movie seriously what the fuck was he doing there-
One piece: Stampede. The start of this movie is amazing cause they come up with the perfect competition to have all of these pirate crews on the same place but it quickly devolves into a "how many characters can we fit in" contest and the plot quickly turns into "lets all beat up the villain", which is fine! I did like seeing so many characters, at one point half way through the movie crocodile just appears out of nowhere lmao but hey i'm not complaining i love crocodile. Usopp is the straw hat who's focused on the most in the movie and i feel conflicted with what they did with him cause it just felt like they were making him go through his water 7 arc all over again by having his inferiority complex flaring up. And usopps arc was amazing in water 7 but reviving it for this movie felt a bit weird and repetitive. Despite this though i was very happy seeing him getting the focus, usopp is a painfully underrated character so having him on the spotlight is always welcome.
Dead End Adventure. This movie is a lot of fun. There's a bar fight, a secret pirate race and sanji being his sneaky self and helping out luffy during the final fight. Whats not to love?
One Piece: Film Z. Much like Stampede, i really enjoyed the start of this movie cause the monster trio get to briefly fight the big baddie together, but the plot kinda loses some steam for me after that. Also they tried to make the admirals sympathetic cause the villain is a retired admiral who was once their mentor but i really really really dont care about the marines at all so that was a bit awkward. The straw hats look stunning in this movie, i love that in the movies they give them a million different outfits and the ones from this one absolutely slayed.
Choppers Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals. Another fun movie where all the straw hats get a moment be cool. There's a kid on this island who i found completely insufferable but i can forgive this movie cause this is also where zosan have that famous scene where they praise the other to their defeated oponent, which made my monkey brain happy.
One Piece: The Movie. This movie's biggest misstep is that sanji isn't in it, but even with this critical flaw it was still quite enjoyable. Zoro is very funny on his own but add luffy into the mix and their dynamic was hilarious. Usopp as always was great. The villain is small potatoes tbh but not really the important part of the movie, which focuses more on the relationship between the kid they meet and his gramps. The final message was surprisingly very sweet. Also sanji appears briefly in the end credits to appease me.
Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle. This movie is a-okay. The villains are a complete joke and it takes the crew less than five minutes to deal with them. The crew dynamics carry all of my enjoyment with this one.
The Cursed Holy Sword. Yeah... this movie commited the unforgivable sin of having zoro as the main focus and yet managing to do absolutely nothing interesting with him. Even if they did shamelessly create kuina 2.0 with saga, they could've delved into how zoro would react when two different duties (his promise to saga and his position as the crew swordsman) clash against each other... but instead we see no conflict with zoro, even though we all know this situation would be conflicting for him. They just make him scowl throughout the whole runtime and thats just not who Zoro is... Luffy and usopp are a lot of fun though.
TL; DR my ranking is:
Strong World
Gold
Baron Omatsuri
Clockword Island
Red
Stampede
Dead End
Z
Choppers Kingdom
One Piece: The Movie
Karakuri Castle
Cursed Holy Sword
Conclusion: the one piece brainrot is no joke.
October Reading Recap
The Husky and His White Cat Shizun: vol. 3 by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou. Still in the territory of a part of this book I remember fairly well, and while the whole underworld arc is good it's not my favorite part of the book and mostly I come away from it going "Rong Jiu has rights." which is true! and I do think Meatbun knows it actually but it still hurts how his arc goes here. Me: continually getting too wound up in the fates of side characters and distracted from what's going on with the mains.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to moving into the next parts of the book, which I don't remember as well. Though I know it's a while before it gets really painful, aka what I'm most excited to reread.
Dark Carnivals: Modern Horrors and the Origins of American Empire by W. Scott Poole. I was so frustrated by this book. I wanted it to be an analysis of horror films and their relationship to American imperialism; what I got was a lot of overwrought prose and repetition of the titular metaphor that was very light on the analysis of the actual texts and heavy on the scathing opinions about what is "good" (politically) horror and what is "bad" (politically) horror. Which, fine, my politics are technically the same as his politics, but it was annoying to read in a book that I thought was going to be more analytical. I had high hopes for this book and it failed them; makes me more hesitant to read his other book about horror and World War I, which I have had on my list for a while. But I liked his book on Lovecraft, funnily enough, so not totally sure what went wrong here.
Paradise-1 by David Wellington. I did not realize that this book was first in a series and I'm a little bit annoyed about it. It was decent horror but it doesn't need to be a series and the lack of resolution bugs me, because now if I want resolution I have to read the next book and I don't think I really want to read the next book. Space horror seems like it would be such a rich land full of possibility and yet I keep being disappointed by space horror. (If, in this case, less disappointed than I was by Dead Silence.)
Remnants of Filth: vol. 1 by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou. She's done it again! It's a differently fucked up relationship, to be sure, but boy am I already here for it, despite feeling like I know very little about what's going on. Gu Mang is my jam as far as character type, and I really like the dynamic as its laid out as having been previously between him and Mo Xi, and also how it is now. Dedicated friends/lovers turned to bitter enemies turned to one of them fractured to a shadow of himself leaving the other bereft of resolution...mm, good stuff. Can't wait to find out more about what's going on under Gu Mang's surface. Looking forward to reading more of this one and glad that I already have the second volume to go to. (And the rest, technically, but I do like reading cnovels in print when I can more than reading on a computer.)
I, Robot by Isaac Asimov. Look at me! Reading classic sci-fi knowing only the bare minimum about it. I liked it more than I expected to, and was less bothered by the way the women were written than I expected to. I didn't realize that it was more a string of short stories tied together by a frame narrative than a novel, but it was really fine that I didn't know that going in - didn't affect my enjoyment, I don't think. And I did enjoy it! I might not have read it on my own, but I read it for a sci-fi book club and ended up liking both it and the book club. Not sure I'd give it, like, a strong recommendation, but I'm glad I finally read it. It'll be interesting seeing what echoes/traces of it I can now pick up in other robot/AI-related writing.
Monstress: vol. 5-7 by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. This comic is so good you guys. So. Good. I don't really know what else to say here, except that she continues to step up her game even more with every volume, and I don't know how she's keeping all the balls in the air that she is with this story as deftly as she is. I have no idea where this story is going, either, and I can't wait to find out. I don't know. Themes of monstrosity and agency and lack of agency and how to be a good person (or try) in a terrible world. With a whole lot more than that. Also there's gay betrayal, if you're into that.
Ariadne by Jennifer Saint. Why do I continue to read Greek Mythology retellings when at best they end up making me go "eh, it was okay I guess"? Not sure. But this was okay, I guess. I liked the same author's Electra better.
Pathogenesis: A History of the World in Eight Plagues by Jonathan Kennedy. More of a "history of the western world categorized by periods of time in which there were various diseases" which...was not quite what I was hoping for, but it was still a good, solid book about epidemiology and the impact of disease on history. A lot of it was familiar to me (how disease enabled the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs and Incas, for instance, but also British colonization in North America), but I did learn some new things, particularly in the sections about Paleolithic/Neolithic diseases. All in all a book I read because I'm particularly interested in the subject but not probably one I'd recommend as the one book that they'd have to read about it.
The Hollow Kind by Andy Davidson. I made it a goal in October to read some spooky books and ended up only reading three, but this was easily my favorite of those - and my favorite non-Darcy Coates horror I've read in a while, too. I wasn't totally sure what to expect from this one, and the slow reveal in the first two thirds particularly was very well done. I found myself slightly more compelled by the portions set in the past than by the present storyline, but not so much as to ding the whole book for it. And I liked that the monster was left pretty vague and undefined, too; that's always my preference. Some very gross descriptions and body horror, as a caveat for those who might be interested but are sensitive about such things.
Die: vol. 1-3 by Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans. I'm finally rereading (and finishing) this series and...I forgot how much I like it. Not only because the art is gorgeous (and the art is gorgeous) but Kieron Gillen's writing remains as sharp as ever, and the way he is playing with fantasy as a genre is very fun for me as a fantasy nerd. My favorite issue remains the one about The Lord of the Rings, though. I don't know that this one is quite as good as The Wicked and the Divine as a whole, but I'll have to reread that one taken as a whole, too, before making that determination.
And the art really is gorgeous. Stephanie Hans remains a fave.
Homegrown: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Right-Wing Extremism by Jeffrey Toobin. A decent narrative about the Oklahoma City bombing, certainly competently written, but he interrupted himself a little too often drawing parallels to January 6th, in my opinion, and I don't feel like I took anything particularly new or fresh away from this. Which is maybe an artifact of the fact that I've read a number of better books about the rise of right-wing extremism in the 90s, and this one wasn't one of them, but I'm going to go ahead and damn with faint praise when I say "it was fine."
currently I'm rereading Banewreaker by Jacqueline Carey which is a fascinating text in ways that I'm going to need to chew on for a bit, so that I can finally read the sequel. but then a bunch of stuff came in for me at the library, so I'm next probably going to be reading Silver Nitrate by Sylvia Moreno-Garcia, and then Godslayer by Jacqueline Carey, and then The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu, and then Children of Memory by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and then Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez. or that's the plan, anyway. we'll see how fast it gets derailed.
also somewhere in there planning on reading more Female General and Eldest Princess and most likely the second volume of Remnants of Filth. I'm trying to spend less time on the internet in general (you absolutely could not tell I am sure) so let's make it a busy reading month instead.
Late Night With the Devil
Tumblr media
I was lucky enough to go see Late Night with the Devil in the theater last night...I didn't realize until the day I bought the ticket that this is a very limited release. I also didn't realize that it was made by Shudder...it will be streaming there next month, for anyone who missed the screenings.
Here are some scattered thoughts:
I would definitely recommend it to horror fans.
Do I think it's the greatest horror movie ever made?
No.
But I think my hype for this was so strong that it was impossible for the movie to live up to it. This movie is a much slower burn than I expected. Given the trailer, I thought this was going to be a white-knuckle thriller, where shit starts happening within the first couple minutes, and doesn't let go until the end. And while there are some intense moments (we'll get to that), it just takes a while to get to them. But the film does fill you with dread from the first few moments...you know something awful is going to happen, but you need to wait an hour until it does.
Basic Premise:
We open with a documentary-style montage telling us about the background of Jack Delroy (played by a fantastic David Dasmalchian), and his rise to fame as a late-night TV host. And then we are told that we are about to see the footage (both in front of and behind the camera) of his final, shocking episode.
I don't think I realized that this was actually going to be a found footage movie. But I really like the way it was used to tell the story. We watch the entire episode and see all the things that happen when the studio cameras are off in real-time, which makes for very effective story telling.
I also didn't realize that this was a low-budget film...not that that's a bad thing...some of the best horror movies were made on shoestring budgets. But because I didn't realize that (again, because the marketing made it look incredible, kudos), there were a couple moments that...surprised me, let's say...tough to go into it without spoiling....Let me put it this way...some of the makeup is fantastic...and some looks like they could have used a liiiitle bit more money. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a ding on the movie...some of the cheaper makeup effects still look good, but there's a part of me that wonders what it would have looked like with a higher budget. But at least they were real practical effects! I'll take a cheaper makeup effect than an overdone CG effect any day of the week. Speaking of CG, there were a couple of moments that used CGI that kind of took me out of the movie...especially given all the other makeup effects...I remember thinking that they could have done that practically.
*and everything else about this movie looks great, I just happened to notice the makeup more last night, I don't know why...but I really liked the overall aesthetic of the movie...they really nailed that late-70's feel*
Now, I know that this is all sounding like a negative review, and I promise it's not! These are just the little things that I noticed during the movie.
One makeup effect I loved?
Lily's makeup during the "contact" scene (the one shown in the trailer so it's not spoilers!). When she looked up at the doctor as the demon, hair covering half her face, I genuinely thought they had switched actors and that she was now being played by a man. The subtle change in eye color, a cheek prosthetic and the actress's wonderful physical acting really had me fooled. It wasn't until her hair was off her face that I realized it was all one person.
And going off of that...the scene where the doctor asks to speak to the demon (again, it's not a spoiler, this was heavily featured in the trailer) is hands-down the best scene in the movie. That was the moment I got tense, with my hands balled into fists. And the scene does something really smart, with the doctor telling the audience to stay quiet...it almost forces us to bottle in our reaction, which only increases our tension and dread.
I would really like to see this one again. I just read the NY Times review (glowing, BTW) that said it may actually be scarier at home than a theater....I mean, it is about a TV show...so to see the "Night Owls" episode on your TV with all the insanity unfolding may make it more terrifying.
All in all, I thought this was a damn good movie. Again, I think my expectations were a bit too high and so it took me a while to adjust and process.
All of the acting was fantastic. I'm so glad that David Dasmalchian is leading a movie...he's such a great actor. I thought the young actress who plays Lily (Ingrid Torelli) did a fantastic job...she made Lily so off-putting and strange, and it was clear that she was struggling with what (or who) ever is inside her.
In the trailer, Kevin Smith was quoted as calling this Rosemary's Baby meets Network...and I half agree with that statement. I'd consider it more Network meets Don't Look Now. You have the examination of the price of fame and the hunger for ratings, while all the while there is this creeping sense of dread and something happening just off camera that leads you to a shocking ending you don't expect. There's also a bit of Scanners thrown in there too (I've seen a lot of people comparing the poster to Scanners)...so if you're squeamish about really over-the-top gore, this is your warning, there are a couple of moments that took me by total surprise.
If I had to give it a letter grade, I'd probably give it an A-. Brought down only because I'm not the biggest fan of over-the-top gore, so that hypnosis scene wasn't too pleasant for me (If you've seen it, you know what I mean) and I wish that they hadn't needed to use CG for a couple effects. But all-in-all, a really solid horror film that I deserves to be seen!
Tumblr media
Also, just as the studio logos started, our theater lights just...turned on...fortunately they were off by the time the movie started, but it was a weird little hiccup. I think a staff member was actually in the audience and was able to get it fixed asap.
PLL: OS (Summer School) 2x04 thoughts
*Spoilers for 2x01-2x04 of Summer School
okay y'all, I've done my nails, washed my hair, I've got my under eye masks on, and a box of old fashioned butter fudge, let's watch 2x04.
EDIT: just a fair warning, I'm absolutely overthinking (I like overthinking) and if you aren't interested in someone overanalyzing a tv show down to the tiniest detail, this post is not for you.
We're officially halfway through the season!
In the "previously on" recap, they play that clip of Mrs. Beasley saying, "we must all do our part to save those who are worthy," (<< or something very close to that), which certainly plays into my "sinners" being punished Mrs. Beasley/Pastor Malachi "Bloody Rose" theories, but I also worry about the show specifically bringing our attention to it this early on.
One thing that I've been thinking about more and more, which makes this season a little difficult to predict, is that we don't really know what "Rose" wants. We have really 0 concrete motivation at this point. In season 1, while we didn't know how all the pieces fit together, we knew the A storyline was centered around Angela, her death, and the role the moms played in it. Since "Bloody Rose" isn't actually Rose Waters (or certainly doesn't seem to be), we don't really know why she's tormenting the Liars, or why she's killing other people. While I've been working on my "sinners" theory, and this episode definitely has some elements that play into that, the lack of a defined "goal" keeps us guessing a lot more this season.
Rose Waters - Are we convinced that the "actual" Rose Water IS Rose Waters? While I've never really thought "Bloody Rose" is Rose, it does put my guard up that the girls immediately buy in to her being the real Rose. I'm not sure rn.
I’ve taken note of the SpookySpaghetti Waters Family films, and I haven’t talked about them at all before, because they’re pretty much just going over stuff (in an incredibly dramatized way) we already know, and I could honestly go the rest of my life never hearing Mouse say “SpookySpaghetti” again, like we GET it, but considering how much screentime they’re giving the plot line, I do have to consider the fact that the films & website may be more important than just a convenient place to dump info & have "Rose" contact people. One thought that comes to mind (despite the character being largely absent so far this season), is that Wes told Tabby in 2X01 that the film festival she was rejected from had rejected him 3 times. We know he’s obsessed with horror, and he’s the one who talked Tabby into posting her film online in order to get it out there. Could the films we’re seeing be Wes’ rejected festival films? Does it matter? This is what I mean when I say I overthink things.
The fact that ROSE is using the “final girl” terminology does immediately make me think of Wes & Christian. It’s kind of hard to imagine Mrs. Beasley (who has been my top suspect since 2x01) knowing/using the “final girl” label, and Wes did quite literally call Tabby a final girl at the beginning of the season, but I don’t feel I can draw any strong conclusions on this one, just taking note.
In that vein of thought... Chip/Christian - I know I was not initially sold on the “Christian is connected to Chip” theories, because it feels like a retread of old ground, BUT I’m a little suspicious that they haven’t really brought Chip and his mom up since the first episode, other than Tabby having flashbacks of him & seeing similarities in Christian. I also noticed Christian referred to Tabby as a final girl (though he does so in relation to her potentially starring in the film), which is terminology I am keeping my eyes open for from anyone other than the main girls. I’m still not completely sold on the suspicions of Christian, but the fact they AREN’T pointing at him right now (which I expected them to do as soon as they realized the Bloody Rose situation was an actual threat since he literally has A and Rose masks in his basement) has me re-evaluating his threat level.
Dr. Sullivan - This character has been a tough one for me. I know she’s from the original show, and a lot of people think that rules her out. I’m not so sure about that (if they’re willing to take jabs at Ezra, a main character from a very popular [but also despised] ship, then I wouldn’t be surprised if they took other characters from the original show and changed the perception of them), and honestly I don’t remember her. It’s been a LONG time since I watched the original show, so I’m missing some of the context with this character. It’s also difficult to know what her motivation would be- yes, it seems Rose was one of her patients, there is a connection, but if she IS behind things, I think we’re missing some really vital information, presumably about the “loss” that is hinted at when Imogen is talking to her this episode. Surely that’s coming back around at some point (is this info we have about her from the main show and I just don’t know it? Someone help me out here). It feels like Dr. Sullivan's past has a part to play, but is she a bad guy? IDK. That being said, we have no proof that Dr. Sullivan was actually pushed down the stairs. She could have just as easily injured herself escaping the fire during Mouse’s test.
Mothers and daughters, mothers and daughters, mothers and daughters, this is haunting me. Everything is about mothers and daughters- basically all of season 1, Rose’s lore, Imogen’s plot, Kelly’s plot, etc. Mothers betraying daughters (Rose’s abuse of Angela, Noa’s mom letting her take the fall for her drugs, Faran’s mom causing her permanent injury/pain with unnecessary surgery, infantilizing/stunting Mouse, failing Karen & isolating/abusing Kelly, etc. etc.), Mothers protecting daughters (Davie’s support of Imogen, Imogen’s fears for Estelle, Tabby’s mom threatening Wes, etc.). This feels so central and so important to the identity of this show, but I feel like I’m missing an important puzzle piece here.
Not important, but like, y’all where can I get one of these jobs where you can just leave because things are “slow” or take a nap in the office because you’re tired and still get paid?
Henry - The Henry/Faran relationship still feels very tenuous/on the rocks. We know so little about Henry, and sometimes he does feel just flat out obsessed with Faran (which, like, I get it, but you’re in a slasher/murder mystery, so…) like, “I just wanna be close to you,” sounds nice, but feels weird. IDK. I have the same problem with being suspicious of Henry that I do with Ash, which is that we’ve never been given any indication of what their connection could be to the larger events at play and we’ve also never been given a particularly good motive for why they might do terrible things to terrorize their girlfriends (Ash more than Henry because I GUESS Henry could be super mad at Faran for the dance stuff, but that feels like it’s pushing it quite a bit) and most, if not all of their scenes, revolve around their girlfriends. Speaking of-
Ash - I don’t have a lot to say here because we get very little new info to work with here. He’s done nothing particularly suspicious (other than being by himself during the Rose search scene, meaning he could have called Faran as "Rose") and I have no idea what his motive could be, so I don’t have a valid reason to put him on my suspect list. He currently has no known connection to Rose, Archie, Angela, and the Millwood past. He currently has no known connection to the church (and considering some of the other topics we see the church condemn, it seems unlikely they are accepting of trans identities). Also, I like him, so until he says or does something that triggers suspicion, I’m gonna allow myself to think the best of him. BUT-
Um. Are we gonna talk about Red Right Hand playing over Mouse & Ash’s search scene or…? Like I said, I have no solid reason to suspect Ash, but you cannot play that song without invoking Scream and NEVER TRUST THE LOVE INTEREST. Are they fucking with us? Is that what this is? Also, from a production standpoint, why was Jordan Gonzalez upgraded to a main cast member this season when this is all the screen time he’s had so far? It doesn’t feel like more than season 1 yet, so does that mean he’ll have a heftier role in the back half of the season? I am spiraling, y’all.
Idk that calling the somewhat obsessed mom (not that I blame Imogen for her overprotective feelings) of your infant daughter to come babysit when you’ve been trying to get her to leave you alone makes ANY sense, particularly since Imogen implied earlier that they don’t even know about the Millwood stuff that could make Estelle a target, but okay?
Johnny - We really don't learn anything about him this episode. Imogen has been through so much, and last season Shawn, Henry, and Ash all turned out good (within the context of that season, who knows this season), so I'm just going to hope this is a good thing for Imogen. That's really all I have to say about this right now. My judgement of him is pending.
Okaaayyy, let's talk about Shawn/Noa/Jen - I've said my piece before about my dislike of infidelity plots and love triangles, there's no need to go further into that here. If there's one saving grace of this plot, it's that I think it could have very important ties to the overall plot of the season ("could" being the operative word here). As I've mentioned before, if Shawn actually learned about Noa & Jen's relationship at some point in the past, he absolutely could be plotting longterm revenge. It almost seems like he almost has to be bad to somewhat soften the blow of Noa's actions, but... maybe they just are working up towards him dumping her. If he's done nothing wrong, then holy hell this is awful for him. I mean, not only did your girlfriend cheat on you (presumably more than once, since Shawn & Noa were a couple when she was in juvie, too), but she also convinced you to give her $2,000 dollars to bail out her "friend" (which, by the way, she also lied to you about why that friend was arrested) who she immediately cheats on you with. Regardless of Shawn's role in the story, that is seriously messed up of Noa. If Shawn is bad, she doesn't know it, so wtf. I'm also really curious about Jen as an individual. She brings up her mom a lot (and uses that connection she has with Noa with her mom being an addict) and the need for money for her mom's rehab (is that even why she needs money?) and with the themes of this show, that doesn't feel like a throwaway thing. We never see her father (also she never mentions a stepmother or a relationship for her father, but there's loads of women's clothes in that house, so are those Jen's clothes? Her mom's old clothes? A partner her father has that just wasn't mentioned?) so we can only take her word for who he is and what he's like, and that's kind of hard to do, considering everything. And was that even her Dad's house? I can't help but wonder if Jen has deeper ties to the main plot than we realize. If not, I think it's certainly a good bet that Noa's "test" will involve her love triangle. She's definitely the most "mysterious" of the new love interests so far this season. While I don't love infidelity plot lines, I'm interested to see where all this goes.
“Rose” - I’m going to make an assumption here (maybe I shouldn’t), that much like Ghostface, Rose’s strength/agility is not necessarily realistic to the character under the mask. And because I think this, I’m not going to waste time comparing her size/strength/agility to Faran.
Quick Note: Of course I was screaming at Faran not to go and play along with "Rose," but regardless I love her and she's strong as hell.
Alright. It's time for the Kelly/Mrs. Beasley/Pastor Malachi/Church plot discussion.
First of all, obviously everything about Kelly's plot/scenes in this episode are massive red flags, and I'm not sure whether to feel validated or like that's massive distraction technique. We are halfway through the season, maybe it's not too early for this. Or maybe the church being involved in the Rose plot (if they are) isn't meant to be a twist, but some of the characters involved are? It does bother me that the show is leaning so hard into the cult-like aspects of the church, because obviously that makes them incredibly suspicious. And what the hell is happening to Kelly?? Like what did we not see?
Kairos - Okay, this was something I had to look up, because wtf. They just dropped this so casually in with Kelly mentioning group therapy and trauma bonding, but this is a really specific bit of terminology. So, it’s safe to say that I waded through some religious stuff I was not familiar with in order to try to get a better understanding of this. Kairos (Caerus) is, in Greek mythology, the personification of opportunity. He is associated with the “fleeting moment” where the scales may tip in one direction or another. “Kairos moments” refers to the right moment for decision/action. In Christianity, Kairos is “the appointed time in the purpose of God.” So anyway, I ended up reading a bunch of Bible verses picked out by various “Kairos” groups, and basically it seems like the Christian interpretation and usage of “Kairos” is often related to the concept of conversion. Kairos is a dangerous time, a moment where you have an opportunity that you will not have again, but one that can lead to positive transformation and, if you miss it, immeasurable loss. There was also a section about submitting to the judgement of authority and how rebelling against this authority is an affront to God (and if that doesn’t feel related to Kelly’s storyline idk what does) and how you can bring ruin and judgement on yourself through things like “adultery” “murdering” “stealing” “coveting”. All of this fits in very much into the concept I’ve had of “Rose” punishing “sinners” and viewing herself as God’s Judgement. BUT is it too early for us to have all this stuff just pointing straight at the church?? It seems too early. Oh, and don’t think I didn’t notice how many of these “sins” Noa has committed in this episode alone.
The constant bombardment of religious iconography, the church plot line being so present, Rose's backstory being directly linked to religious abuse, "sins" and "tests" being central to the plot of the story, the entire concept of the redemption house, the mention of kairos... At this point if the church stuff is a side plot and not directly related to Rose, I'm going to be disappointed, because I'd rather have coherent, well supported motive than a shocking "gotcha" moment. But we'll see.
OKAY, I think that's it from me tonight, y'all. Also I'm sorry for how many times I've written "y'all" in this post (I grew up in the south, I come by it naturally, I promise). Send me an ask or something if you want to spiral & overthink with me. 💜
Homemade Meals and Films | Detective Loki x m!reader
@areyouwaiting asked: well here I am
Det. Loki x male reader
“You’re not eating that shit, I’ll make you something decent” as a prompt because that bitch doesn’t eat right
Thanks <33
summary: Loki has shit eating habits, but you've finally got an excuse to change that.
tws: swearing, mentions of smoking
Admittedly, when he was working, Loki ate like shit. He also slept like it. Black coffee and occasional snacks throughout the day weren't exactly any good for him, neither were cigarettes and cans of Red Bull. Sure, he could have easily gotten something a little better, or at least filling, at any of the fast food and takeaway places that were around, as they were open for a good chunk of the day and they were nice and cheap, but Loki rarely ever went there; usually, he found himself sat in the same cafe drinking the same shit as always. He never ate properly, never drank properly, he never slept properly; every day, he would come home to you in the exact same state. Hungry. Tired. Looking like a bag of shit that had been dragged through a bush backwards. In all the years you had known him, and in all the years since that you had been dating, you had always wanted to change that; you wanted to make sure that he was properly fed, that he wasn't just drinking black coffee and that he was actually getting some fucking sleep, but you had never gotten the chance.
Until tonight. Until he came home at quarter past two in the morning, when the air was cold and the wind was howling and the rain was on tap, when the streets were quiet and the biggest worry you had was making sure that the television would pause before 'Train to Busan' started on the film channel. You made sure that you had everything set up just right; the bedding changed and still warm from the tumble dryer, the scent of leather coating the air in the room, the lights turned off except for the little lamp that sat in the corner, the duvet chucked on the sofa as the television froze when you pressed the pause button. The film would start in half an hour. Pots and pans on the stove as you decided that you would make the thing that would be best for him: a good strong curry. Thankfully you had enough spices and herbs that it would actually taste of something and that it would actually have a kick to it instead of that mild bullshit people often had. A good strong curry; filling, good for the body, and good for the mind.
Loki came home just as you were pulling the vegetables out, laying them in order beside the wooden chopping board; he didn't think much of it, draping himself across your back and kissing your neck sweetly as he grumbled so softly. "What are you doing?"
"I know you went to the café," you started, grabbing a peeled onion and starting to chop it up. "And you're not eating that shit, I'll make you something decent - I'm gonna make you a curry."
He smiled, nuzzling into the back of your neck as he closed his eyes and grumbled again, ever so faint and ever so soft; he could smell the spices already, making his stomach growl as he did his best not to complain about it. The top buttons of his shirt were undone, and he could feel the slight shiver from the winter air begin to creep its way up, making him clench his jaw. "What kinda curry?"
"It's a veggie Phaal," you told him. "It'll be good for you, trust me."
"How?"
"It's filling," you started, "so it'll fill your stomach more than black coffee and fucking snacks. It's balanced and nutritious... and it's good for the mind."
Loki grumbled again. "How?"
"It tastes good," you chuckled softly. "And stuff that tastes good is always good for the mind... but don't worry - there's a horror film on tonight, so I figured, y'know, we could snuggle down after eating. Watch it together. I brought the duvet down, too."
He couldn't stop the smile that came to him as he turned around and looked at the sofa; the thick duvet smothering it, the frozen television screen, he recognised the lumps of pillows beneath the duvet, too. "Thank you."
"It's not a big deal," you scoffed. "I mean, I'm your boyfriend - isn't it part of the territory that I gotta look after you?"
"Well, yeah, but-"
"Then go sit down," you told him gently. "Get yourself comfortable, and we'll eat, watch a film, and then go to bed."
All Loki could do was nod as he dared to pull away from you, thinking to himself how lucky he was that he had such a caring boyfriend as he got himself comfortable amongst the duvet and the pillows; maybe one day, there would be a canopy in your future. Maybe one day, there would be a glass to step on. Maybe. If you put up with him long enough.
