out of curiosity, what are the common qEtoiles mischaracterizations, and the accurate characterizations you wished people used more? Sincerely, an English speaking fan who is re-learning French!

honestly i kind of consider it a mischaracterization when people like... make etoiles into this team leader who always knows what to do and move things forward. or like that he has a bad attitude to like... match his fighting skills. or like the dark knight brooding warrior. he says he is these things. these are lies. he lies about himself constantly. i wouldnt trust a good 2/3 of the things he says about himself to be true. you read him clearer through his actions than his statements.

in my opinion etoiles is more like. sturdy second in command. he's not there to lead, he's there to fill in the holes where they pop up. he's there as cover. he's quick witted in shortchange scenarios, but that is so not the same thing as a genuine strategist. in another expression, if someone is a leader, the leader is a doctor, etoiles's role is more like... the EMS team in an ambulance. He's not there to fix your problem, he's there to keep your problem covered until you can get someone else to fully fix it. but that doesn't mean his role is any less important when he's needed.

Etoiles is also, like, so very much a team player if he respects and trusts a person. And it is so easy to have his respect and trust. His trust starts at 100% for everyone. he's also so very very very good at reading people (gesture to the bbh clip where bbh moves his mouse slightly downward and etoiles calls him out on being depressed). He read Mousey as enjoying dungeons and pvp way more and wanting to hang out with her. He's also one of the only people who like continuously runs in the girlies group and makes all of them pvp with him and they all love it so he keeps coming back to pvp with them. Thats how he started his whole thing with Tina and pvping with her constantly. Reading other people also, he loves finding other pvpers so he attacks roier constantly now bc he knows roier can pvp.

What else OH Etoiles loves whining (and this is because Rayou loves whining) that dude will just complain constantly. You haven't seen an etoiles stream if youve never seen him whine. Can't say I'm not kind of endeared by it. With this too he loves over explaining things (RIP armor powerpoint wish you couldve been given...) because he wants to help everyone....

OH and he's very over exaggerated too in replying to people in a complaining way and a self deprecating way and also likes to try to push the envelope with people and he does all of that to try and get a laugh out of others. like he's well aware people find him going "Oh so you don't give a shit about me and want me to die ? you want etoiles to die ?" fucking hilarious and also loves complaining in the first place thats why he does that. if your etoiles isn't complaining and whining then it isn't etoiles. the self deprecating thing is... its interesting bc he does have full faith in his abilities but will never say it out loud unless its trying to reassure someone who is worried. pushing the envelope is so specific he won't do it too much and its like........... from what ive seen (correct me if im wrong) heavily directed at non francophones where if they laugh at something wack he's done he'll try to do it again to make them laugh more. shoutout to the time he made bbh laugh so much when he cursed he didn't get languaged by bbh so he kept cursing to try to make bbh do it again. the dudes a total people pleaser.

smaller thing ive talked about extensively already (u can prob find it in my q!etoiles tag if i remember i'll edit a link to the posts in here soon lol) etoiles hates losing he looooooves winning he's very intense about it lol. its cute!

on a final note even if you don't become deeply unwell about etoiles like i am i think this highlight clip video has like everything he's like condensed into like 11 minutes. You should watch it. It's a good starting point.

INTERESTING... I really enjoy people's different explorations of how joyces brain works and her kind of thought process and deep dig analysis into why she acts the way she does i think its so fascinating :-) also helps me explore her gender in fun ways

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

OOH... I really enjoy writing her interactions with other characters and her inner monologue as she does so, like rolling her eyes at dennis or how things mac says affect her emotionally. Its not that i dont like but i always am really worried im not in character for out loud dialogue? Because shes such a wild card pun intended i dont want to mischaracterize how she speaks in comparison to how she actually feels which is easier to analyze :-)

can we talk about the mischaracterization of the century.... bc i am torn

there's actually a couple things i do like about his characterization in the manga. i like that he's much more of a contrast to the group's dichotomy. alice acts as the counterweight to the group. where everyone chooses to work together he actively avoids it. even though some people aren't as trusting as others (qtaro and shin for example), they still chose to work WITH the group since it gives them an advantage. alice challenges that. he says what they are thinking: it's impossible to trust people 100% in this situation and he chooses to air his grievances with them instead of keeping his worries to himself.

even though there are people who think the same thing he is, they actively mask that part of themselves and continue to act as though they trust others. alice literally pushes against that ideology. he's not just going to sit there idly and pretend to get along with everyone.

he not only understands that his presence is disruptive for the group, but he understands the disadvantages it comes with.he is completely aware that he is a criminal among them, and that he's automatically assumed to be more dangerous than anyone else there. he's aware that even if he DID work with the group that fact would linger regardless, and he'd be more likely to be chosen in a majority vote.

i also like that he's taken more seriously in the manga. controversial take i know. i'm not saying i don't like the comedy relief role he plays in the game, but i am saying seeing him play more of a foil role is really cool to see. when alice was first created nankidai wanted him to be more of a villainous role, something more akin to Shin. since that role was already filled he decided to change the direction completely and make alice a more lighthearted addition to the story. i do like this part about him it's one of my favorite things! part of me always kind of wished nankidai put more emphasis on his character in the story though, and that's not something you can do with a silly little guy like alice.

i think tonally it's a good choice to make alice a more prominent foil in the manga. having him joke around too much would change the flow of the story completely, especially in the main trial. the plot points are still the same but alice has more intent behind him. he plots more than his game version does.

during the main game, it's decided early on that it would be best to weed out the most suspicious and untrustworthy people first. qtaro openly states that voting for alice is the most obvious decision. alice counters this, stating only voting for him would be stupid and bluffs about his role in the game. he uses the groups distrust of him to his advantage.

claiming he's got an important role to the game right off the bat puts him in a position of power amongst the group. they can't vote for him because they quite literally do not know what card he has up his sleeve.

as compared to how this scene played out in the game, qtaro tells alice he's going to vote for him, alice brushes it off and tells him to do what he wants, and then keiji counters qtaros claims instead of alice. keiji becomes the one to tell qtaro not to vote for alice because putting all of your eggs in one basket could be a risky move. alice becomes more a passive character in this scene. he doesn't care what qtaro does because it doesn't concern him... alice's life has been over for a long time already.

there are a lot of things i dislike about his characterization in the manga too, though. him having a more antagonistic role makes him a less sympathetic character, in my opinion. even though alice was rude and hard to get along with in game, he still had moments of kindness or genuine emotion. he openly states he doesn't care about himself many times, and that he regrets the things he's done. he shows open remorse for the things he's done and a lack of self-preservation. alice doesn't care about what happens to himself, he doesn't deserve to in his mind.

i feel as though that's been stripped away in the manga. this alice is more selfish eager to live. the most obvious example to me is when alice pushes past sara because he thinks he sees the exit. to quote him he says "that's the exit isn't it?...maybe it is, and i can win all on my own." i hardly think alice would ever do this. especially with his sister in the death game with him. why wouldn't he rush to tell reko in hopes of her having a chance to survive? alice would never leave her behind in a situation like this. NEVER EVER. it feels so out of character for him to just push sara aside and rush to save himself in this situation.

alice is a coward yes. alice runs away any chance he gets, but when it comes to his sister he actively runs toward danger. he would literally do anything to protect her. he has KILLED to protect her. i cannot imagine him just leaving her behind for the chance to save himself.

another example of this is when alice makes comments about voting kanna off:

i know alice has only a few moments with kanna, and none of them are in chapter one, but in the game he's shown so much sympathy for her. he cares about her, he considered her kind and worthy of protecting. he literally votes off shin to protect her because he understands what it's like to care for a little sister. he sees reko in her. at this point in the story he's been filled in on everything that has happened. he knows that kanna's older sister just died. he knows that she's suffering and in need of guidance and care. i don't think alice would be so callous at this moment.

i have no idea why they would include alice saying this. there's no scene like it in the game. kanna still arrives late and alice makes a comment about the entire group looking unnerved. it makes him seem cruel. he's not even upset about the possibility of her dying, just that her death was wasted when he could have used it for his advantage.

i think it's gonna be difficult for the manga to change alice to a more sympathetic character after the first main game. he plays a huge part in chapter 2 and becomes a much softer presence to be around. you even get to help him with his sister. i think it'll be difficult to make him appear more naturally offputting but kind instead of just a cold killer, but i hope that they will be able to do it in a seamless way because despite everything, that's still my babygirl 💖

when it comes to his dialogue i really don't think they changed much. everyone has been saying that he's much ruder in the manga but honestly, he's always been kind of an asshole lol. when you compare the game scripts to the manga a lot of the things he's said are quoted pretty closely (except for his talking mannerisms but ill get to that)

in the game alice called sara pigface at one point. he even insulted her appearance. he's called everyone idiots, fools, and rascals. in your time to shine he insults both kai and mishima in their first fondness events. he makes comments about how everyone there are stupid and foolish for putting so much faith in each other and they should see this game is rigged aginst each other.

now when it comes to his talking mannerisms i really can't say much on the official Japanese dialogue. i don't know how accurate it is to his ingame dialogue. in the English translation for the game his dialogue changes drastically to from well-spoken and powerful to pretty meek and anxious. i know for a fact that in the game he hardly ever swore and instead chose to use insults more than expletives.

the manga his dialogue is just as rude but more vulgar in tone. he swears and threatens violence more than he did in the game. the way alice talked in game was so unique and funny to me that it's something i hold DEARLY and it's a shame to see it stripped down to just tough guy talk in the manga. i don't HATE the way he talks it's just not the same and a little disappointing if anything. i hope they play up his talking mannerisms after the first main game and let him be more of a freak ass instead of an asshole.

all in all this alice is edgy and way more awful to the group than his in game counterpart, but he is still alice so i guess it's impossible for me to hate him 🤷‍♂️ i am honestly looking forward to seeing how they are gonna try and tone him down in the second part of the manga, and looking forward to see what route they are gonna use for him. he will never hold a candle to the OG though.

So I decided to try share that with you all too in the form of a Familial Yandere Fanfic about them! I hope that it did manage to spark a little bit of that same energy as I thought that the ending alongside the rescue from those evil NPC’s was very sweet if not scary in a Yandere sense

I very much struggled with the Sabo story too like I was half tempted to be like “Fuck, I can’t do this…” but then came that idea and all turned out okay!

Plus I can see Sabo going through like twenty stress balls in a day if he’s fighting his Yandere urges like the people around him are just staring wide eyed as he pops another one, grabs a new one, and then pops that one like two squeezes later

🌟: Who’s the tease in the relationship?

Oso, it's Oso, Mizuki couldn't get on his level even if they tried lol. But actually, he teases them alot and gets under their skin (though they don't show it) more than anyone else. Zuki is the least friendly and "submissive" with him (as in they don't put up the people-pleaser facade, i'm not talking about anything gross yet) and picks on him without guilt, at least with Kara they limit what they do but Oso isn't shown mercy. I think Mizuki would come off as sadistic towards him because they hate being teased so much (they like it alot but always becomes violent when they feel that way) and the two would battle to get under each other's skin. But because Oso is very uncaring, it'd be harder to piss him off, so Oso wins mostly.

💔: Is it hard being away from each other?

Mizuki doesn't like being alone for long periods of time, it's less of a "I need him!!" thing and more a general loneliness, they've spent years without anyone to talk to and are a bit desperate to not be left alone with their thoughts. At times, Oso can tell they're clingier than usual and tease them a bit, its rare but they'd sometimes be outright and ask Oso to stay with them for a while, he always agrees but is taken aback by their sincerity. Besides the rare moments, they both have to spend days away from each other to avoid a murder occurring.

💗: How do you two like to cuddle?

Mizuki hates staring face-to-face for most things, so spooning is the common position and other times Zuki will like to lay on top on him in a different direction than how hes laying and hold onto him, it's an awkward position but it somehow works for them. Osomatsu likes being the big spoon because Zuki will crush the life out of him like a pillow when they get to be big spoon (sometimes he let's them but he's almost broken a rib like twice now) and because he likes fond- (use ur imagination, still too early). Another thing that isn't as important but im mentioning anyway: Mizuki likes kissing his neck while big spoon and Oso loves it but can't survive long enough to feel it (Zuki doesn't like how he reacts to kisses so they try to do it subtlety)

💚: Who gets jealous?

I'd say Osomatsu does but I often imagine no for my own personal comfort, realistically though, yeah Oso would be more jealous than Mizuki. Zuki doesn't care as long as they aren't feeling/ arent' abandoned (I often think of Oso this way too because of personal reasons... ) I guess maybe sometimes Oso would get jealous of them hanging out with his brothers or them hanging out with Akita (Akita is old "friends" with Mizuki btw) Akita for sure, he and his brothers in general I think would be weird about Akita.

💕: Who’s the clingier one in the relationship?

They're both clingy and try not to show it to eachother. As said in the first question, Zuki struggles to be by their self these days so they're around their friends a lot. Oso at times becomes clingy towards Zuki and bugs them the same way they bug him, often times because he wants affection that he doesn't really get from anyone else. It's super rare that they'd either of them would admit to being needy but I like to imagine they genuinely comfort each other when they do, and occasionally... Oso would spend a night with them for comfort, ANYWAY. (sorry for the mushiness bit here i just gotta get it off my mind)

writing things Oso related is hard actually, I worry I may be mischaracterizing him but idk, I am not the Oso expert

1. the character everyone gets wrong

i hate to be cliché'd but TSUKASA. i admit i used to be partly guilty of it before i realized that tsukasa isn't really empty inside, he keeps being a parallel to mafuyu by not only being actually full (? inside but being like. really full inside. tsukasa has several personas and he acts very differently depending on who he's interacting with and they're all sorta tsukasa to a degree but they're also not really? tsukasa please stop being worrying or be but have this acknowledged pls

anyway, people tend to portray tsukasa with no nuance at all, he's either a happy careless guy or so sad that he could put every N25 member combined to shame. as i said he's REALLY worrying but he genuinely really likes what he does and has passion and drive. he's just team "i can't be sad if i don't acknowledge i'm sad so i'll just leave the issue there until i forget it :)"

6. which ship fans are the most annoying?

i am inclined to say kanade x mafuyu because i still genuinely can't see how they'd have a healthy romantic relationship, so when i see content of the ship while i'm on misc tags i'm like

and they make every single thing kanade does about mafuyu. i mean, canon already sorta does that, but even when it's not about that, they MAKE IT about mafuyu. do these guys even like kanade? do they see her as her own character? i wonder...

10. worst part of fanon?

TSUKASA ADOPTING EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER EVER. they took him saying toya is like a little brother to him (more on that later) and ran. a marathon. and a half. around the moon. and back.

tsukasa only has one sister, and it's saki! toya tenma is a sweet sentiment, really, but that's where it should've stopped.

everything i've seen about kanade tenma is super mischaracterized too. i know they haven't talked much, but i feel like their dynamic wouldn't be like that at all if they were to live together. and i was right about the mafuyu-tsukasa dynamic way before they even met, which obviously means i'm always right (?

minori tenma is the least frequent, minori shinonome is something i've seen a lot and that i don't really get either, like, is it because minori's hair is brown-ish? is it? and what about minori tenma? is it because tsukasa cheered her up that one time? i'm the first one asking for more actual leadersquad interactions, but hc-ing them as siblings just because of that...

people who go "yeah minori tenma/shinonome real because she's marrying tsukasa/saki or akito/ena" are the backbone of this fandom

25. common fandom complaint you're tired of hearing

please stop treating toya x tsukasa/saki shippers as if they're the scum of the earth i promise you they're perfectly good ships

i feel like i say this a lot but just because tsukasa sees toya as a younger brother, it doesn't mean that toya feels the same. he has never said it in the game (afaik) and he actually changes the subject rapidly whenever tsukasa mentions it. saki has never said anything regarding seeing toya like that, so it's safe to say he's just a childhood friend to her.

speaking of! i've also seen people proclaim that nene and rui are "sibling coded" which. doesn't make sense either? like if you see them like that, it's fine! same with toya tenma and the rest of the sibling hcs, don't let this rando on the internet stop you, i'm not the biggest toya x tsukasa fan myself, but one thing is that and other is going around people's posts policing what they do or don't post. i don't think you're going to get anything more than annoy the op, really.

first and foremost: no hate to anyone who has these interpretations, i just think it’s not “true” to the original themes of the story, and at sometimes can fall into mischaracterization entirely. sometimes this is fine, i don’t think people are bad people for this, i just disagree and can get really angry over it- but that’s just because j&h has been a special interest for years on my behalf, so im very passionate about it.

im of the opinion that jekyll/hyde, though there is a degree of separation between them (in the way one doesn’t feel like themself when under extreme amounts of stress), are essentially the exact same person- the distance between them is marked by depersonalization and intense mood swings. it’s a little more complicated than im letting on, since the way i think about it is lifted from my experiences with schizoaffective disorder (mania, depersonalization, disassociation, addiction) but also a part of me worries im setting a negative example for mentally ill/queer people by writing an antagonist this way. but im mentally ill so i do what i want. i just don’t like to personally think of it as a DID situation, cause 1. unless the person who has this head canon HAS DID, it’s almost always written as ableist (and ppl with DID who see it that way are perfectly fine- it’s just people who DONT have it often write it distastefully) and 2. i just think this interpretation detracts from the reality of jekyll was always the one in control. but also i don’t think we can really apply psychology to this situation WITHOUT making it somewhat problematic, since adding labels to jekyll’s condition is difficult and can fall into ableist stereotyping or complete misinterpretation. i write jekyll as a mentally ill addict. because i, MYSELF, am a mentally ill addict, but i don’t really label him beyond what symptoms he experiences unlike many others. that is my little cross to bear i guess but i try not to fault people (especially younger fans) from having different interpretations since mine comes from a more personal place (as well as trying to avoid shooting myself in the foot by negatively stereotyping my own lived experiences)

anyway my the worst offender in terms of hcs is the infantilization of hyde and jekyll. typically there’s one or the other. hyde is either portrayed as extremely (UNSETTLINGLY) young, or innocent and just rambunctious, and entirely separate from jekyll - or people see jekyll as an entirely good person corrupted by Hyde’s influence, and not that he was already an unhealthy person. and, overall, that they are entirely separate, FULLY FORMED people when, as we see during the breakdown in the book, both jekyll and hyde are essentially figments, masks to wear under the guise of respectability. neither of them are the “true” jekyll. also, they fuck. hyde fucks. sorry to say but he probably fucks daily. it is an unfortunate reality we must contend with that jekyll is just weirdly horny. people ignore this but it must be said that jekyll is a horny old man. i don’t think he’s a genuine sex pest like SOME portrayals (COUGH COUGH MUSICAL) but i do think he has a lot of unhealthy ideas about it. ask me about my jekyll being queer thoughts and ill write you an essay. also adding to this i hate jekyde it disgusts me it pisses me off sorry to anyone who follows me who likes it but i will never ever write it that way and any and all interpretations i see like that revile me.

also, a general pet peeve - i hate when people draw them young. i guess it’s fine, i just can’t not see them as old men. even hyde, to me, appears in his mid-to-late 30s. (though I keep it intentionally vague.) i don’t see any of the main cast being under the age of 45, with the exception of minor characters such as the witness and several members of jekyll’s staff.

as for my FAVORITES (oh ehehehe) im a huge jekyll/utterson fan for purely self indulgent reasons. I interpret their relationship as romantically charged, and AMPHIMAL revolves around this principal- but ohhh it’s a tragedy anon it’s a TRAGEDYY. they never get together, and any affection is marked by shame. (a lot of amphimal deals HEAVILY with the politics of the time, which includes patriarchal thinking / fear of being outed as gay which, at the time, was punishable by prison time - 3-5 years of hard labor, sometimes more - but the death penalty had been lifted not too long before the start of amphimal, which still lingers in the public memory) (adding: and being transgender was basically just not a recognized thing: important because utterson is trans in my retelling) but I do have many many drawings of the two of them in romantic endeavors despite the fact that it never happens in story proper. the longing hurts more when you are denied what you want.

but ok so like. long story short? i have specific interpretations about the relationships between certain characters, as well as the conditions of them in general - IM NOT THE AUTHORITY ON THIS THOUGH!!! i just try to stay true to the original idea of jekyll being an extremely unreliable narrator. ending this with the musical is my enemy. yes i will listen to confrontation on repeat bevause Anthony warlow sings like an angel but FUCK I HATE THE MUSICAL. except they did something with long hair jekyll. that was cool. anyway bye

I personally do think so (and I ship them haha) bit I'd love to have your opinion too! There's alot of contention in the fandom around their relationship and it always infuriates me, I'd love to know what you think!!

Thanks for the question! I do ship Amy and Laurie. I am actually working an episode for season 3 of the Little Women podcast where I´ll be analyzing the chapter "learning to forget" where Laurie proposes Amy.

The bottom line is I think Laurie´s relationship with Amy is completely different than with Jo. With Jo, he is annoyed when she tells him what to do, like in the book there are moments when Laurie is genuinely annoyed when Jo preachers him about neglecting his studies etc. Laurie gets easily agitated by Jo and Jo by him. I don´t think he was in love with Jo in the begin with, being with Jo is almost an excuse not to grow and worry about the future.

With Amy, it´s the total opposite. After re-reading the chapter, it´s amazing how he thinks of Amy´s words (aren´t you ashamed of yourself) and decides to change and Laurie as a character becomes a lot more pleasant to be around. He literally turns from a boy into a man and becomes a working member of the society (with Jo he would have stayed as Lazy Laurie).

When I read Christine Doyle´s essay (Singing Mignon´s song) I had a moment of clarity about the relationships. There is a quote about Louisa May Alcott highlighting the idea of how a person grows and gets into a higher level of self-understanding when they move on from an unsatisfying relationship to one that works.

That´s when I was like "Oh now I get it, that was Alcott´s quest all along". These couples represent that idea. When Jo falls in love with Friedrich, he completes her because he helps her to become the best version of herself and the same goes with Laurie when he is with Amy.

I think both couples suffer from unbelievable mischaracterization in the movies. Between 1933 and 2019 films the filmmakers put a lot more effort into romanticizing Jo and Laurie and then minimizing the importance of Jo/Friedrich and Amy/Laurie relationships presenting them as afterthoughts.

These quotes that Alcott wrote about the character´s "transference" she penned out already as a teen, so it definitely was not an afterthought and I believe we can trace a lot of that to Louisa May Alcott´s personal relationships as well (Henry/Ladislas).

I think it is such an amazing way to look at relationships and anyone who has been in a bad and unbalanced relationship and then found a healthier one (or wished to find one) could benefit from that. So yes, Amy and Laurie and Friedrich and Jo storylines are very important and an internal part of the story of Little Women.

There's definitely been a lot of AM bashing lately, although I have no idea why. The most recent one on twitter was abt how toshinori is actually more cruel and abusive than endeavor (??). That along other takes I've seen claiming he manipulates and uses izuku for his own benefit, and is izuku's worst mentor, and is a groomer and predator and apparently a kidnapper (according to someone that claimed he took izuku from inko..) always make me wonder what manga these people are reading bc while toshinori has made mistakes and is flawed, he loves izuku dearly. He has always shown to worry abt him and to want the best for him. How anyone looks at their relationship and comes up with takes that their relationship is toxic and that toshinori is awful to izuku is beyond me, bc that man loves his boy so much. I don't even know why he's so hated by the fandom for these mischaracterizations and bashing to come up so often. Even weirder considering how a lot of characters that have made such things he's accused of or done other bad things and are also flawed, get forgiven very easily and are still loved by the fandom, yet they can't do the same for toshi. Idk, at this point I'm just wondering what has his character done that makes ppl so angry with him.

I wonder how many people are genuinely that bad at reading things, or are just using hyperbolic language to try and convince other people to also not like a character. If you say you don’t like a character, no one really cares. But if you say that character is problematic, then suddenly it’s a moral imperative for others in the fandom to also not like him and portray him in a negative light.

So I initially deleted this because I didn’t want to get into it, but I also think the question is genuine and I wanted to explain my thinking. CW for emotional and physical abuse and sexual assault.

I am tagging @silverlinedeyes​ because this ask concerns them and I don’t appreciate being vagued, whether it’s a blogger or someone answering an ask that mentions me. I try not to vague other people and I’m not perfect but... just getting this all out in the open.

So I can’t speak for everyone who was upset at the initial post comparing Ianthe and Gwyn. Personally, I kind-of grimaced and was mostly confused about what in the world they could possibly have in common and why such a comparison would be necessary. As people, they are fundamentally different. And to me, the comparison is incredibly thin. Eye color and priestesses? How many priestesses have that eye color? And to use that to connect them to a creature we’ve only read about in two sentences in the whole series, a creature we’ve never actually seen on page and know next to nothing about? Basically, the intention or purpose behind the comparison didn’t make sense to me.

Now I’ll be perfectly transparent - I didn’t read the whole post because I could tell that it wasn’t for me. I also didn’t go around vaguing it. It was mentioned in some asks that I got and I tried to limit my commentary on that post and focus on the comparisons I had made, intentionally. Because 1) I can’t speak from the position of a SA survivor, and those are the people that post concerned, and 2) I didn’t fully read it, and 3) I don’t want to vague people! This fandom is divided enough. I know I made a joke after acosf came out how we are all having separate, loud conversations in the same room and refusing to acknowledge the other conversations while somehow responding to one another. And it was kinda funny at first, but now it’s exhausting.

To me, comparing Ianthe, who is universally reviled as a r*pist, and Gwyn, who we know is a SA survivor, is unnecessary. That’s pretty much what it comes down to. Why do we need to do this? What is it telling us about any of the characters? About relationships? I know a lot of people found it anything from distasteful to downright offensive, and while I think that just about anything is fair game when it comes to fictional characters, I also personally think that the intention behind the comparison was confusing. I just personally don’t understand why we would need to talk about those characters in the same breath. What purpose does it serve? Someone who can speak from the position of a SA can please feel free to add on, if comfortable!

The reason that I compare Az and Tamlin is to analyze them as people, as characters, because I see a lot of similarities in who they are on a (currently) fundamental level - their anger, their loneliness, their attempts to restrain their destructive impulses. These are major parts of who they are as people and how they interact with the world. There were red flags present in acotar that I recognized from my personal life and that I can now see in Azriel. Frankly, it concerns me that people see Tamlin as a completely irredeemable villain, while not recognizing that Azriel shares some of the same personality traits. 

Comparing a r*apist and a SA survivor is an unequal comparison. Emotional and physical abuse, on the other hand, tends to be generational. I’m not an expert on a professional or academic level, but I did a quick search on my university’s database, and found this from “Interrupting the Intergenerational Transmission of Violence”, and please note that these lines were the context or background - this article didn’t set out to prove these statements to be true, they are already commonly accepted knowledge and so their research was looking to solve the problem:

Children exposed to domestic violence are at increased risk for a wide range of emotional and behavioural disorders. Conduct disorder, in particular, may ultimately lead to the perpetration of further domestic violence in the next generation. Parental characteristics such as warmth and positive attributions may mitigate the risk for intergenerational transmission of violence.

I think that as a fandom, people really, really tend to mischaracterize Azriel. It bothers me. He’s not soft. I’m sorry, he’s just not. We have multiple examples of him being described, using words like “rage”, “cruel”, “temper”. One of the first posts I ever made in this fandom that got a lot of attention (over four years ago) was trying to correct these mischaracterizations. They keep happening.

There was an icy rage in Azriel I had never been able to thaw. In the centuries I’d known him, he’d said little about his life, those years in his father’s keep, locked in darkness. (ACOMAF)

One moment, Azriel was seated. The next, he’d blasted through Eris’s shield with a flare of blue light and tackled him backward, wood shattering beneath them. “Shit,” Cassian spat, and was instantly there— And met a wall of blue. These are just a few of the examples, but we can also think about acofas when he gets angry at dinner thinking about how his mother was treated as a servant, when he can’t handle being around people who are happy on Solstice. I could make a whole post but I’m kinda sick of talking about Azriel at this point.

I have experienced an emotionally abusive relationship much like feylin was. I made myself so small, for years, because this person’s anger and anxiety and grief took up so much space in the world. I felt like I had to overcompensate, to not make them feel jealous if I was having a good day, and to not take on my negative feelings if I had a bad day. So I just stopped feeling things. For years. It didn’t go well. I’m still dealing with the aftermath. 

I have also witnessed physical domestic violence, as a child. I don’t think I need to explain further than that.

My fanfiction A Loveless Romantic deals heavily with the feylin abuse, and I only feel comfortable writing it because of my personal experiences. I’ve written posts about Nesta and alcohol and another post that I can’t currently find about why acotar is such a good book because it shows us all of those red flags for abuse before many people knew they were red flags. (If I can find it I’ll reblog.) My point is, when I go into analyses and metas like these, they aren’t just an exercise in “oh hey what if?!” It’s “here is my experience with this topic and so here’s how I read this with that background.”

The comparison between Azriel and Tamlin is deeply personal to me, and I didn’t exactly expect to have to disclose my personal history when making it, but when I see people vaguing about how the comparison “hurts people who have experienced abuse”, hi, OP knows exactly what she’s talking about on a personal level, thanks. So I’m going to keep talking about it, because I know what I’m talking about, and it bothers me that people can’t see it in fiction because I worry that they then won’t be able to see it IRL until it’s too late. I’m going to keep writing my “thinkpieces” because this is a topic I know a lot about, it’s important to me, and it’s something that I think a lot of people can and should learn more about.

Good god, I genuinely want this series to end happy.

I think there's a reason why Season 1 holds a special place in so many people's hearts. Not just because of how well-written it was, how simple, yet also complex the story was, and the twists and turns we got along the way, but because there was hope.

Even after Wilbur blew up L'manburg and Techno spawned Withers, there was still hope. They could rebuild, they could move forward.

And I am not saying that the lore isn't hopeful anymore, but I am saying that post-Exile arc and ESPECIALLY post-Doomsday, it feels like the hope has been slowly draining. And I know that this series can actually take on the subverting expectations thing and do it well, but I am constantly worried about the characters I love being hurt more than they already have been.

Tommy has been doing so well, and he has been trying to heal, but with Wilbur back, Tommy is also back into following him. (And trust me when I say that I love Wilbur and think he's incredibly mischaracterized by this fandom, but I also know that him being around Tommy right now is not healthy.)

And Techno is in prison with Dream, and while yes this setup can go anywhere, there's also that ringing possibility that Dream is gonna be broken out due to Techno not knowing why Dream is there to begin with.

And yes I am fully aware that most people on the server don't like Dream and if he was broken out, a lot of people would not hesitate to kill him. But a little persuasion, charisma, and a couple dozen Withers can do far more damage than what most people think.

Wilbur needs to snap out of his pure black and white mindset and realize that it's not as simple as "oh Dream killed Tommy but revived him, and he revived me too, maybe Dream isn't as evil as everyone thinks he is," because not only is that mindset wrong, but it's dangerous.

I don't know where I am going with this honestly, but I want there to be hope. Both the s1 and s2 finales were phenomenal and ended on high notes, and I hope the s3 finale ends off on a high note as well. I just want good things for these characters, and I want there to be some actual communication between everyone, because it's been plaguing the server since day 1.

Okay so my favorite published authors are Jandy Nelson (I’ll Give You The Sun is a book I reread constantly. It’s my comfort book. I swear if my soul was anywhere besides my body, there’s a piece of it trapped in that book.), Fredrick Backman (specifically And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer), Brigid Kemmerer (literally all of the books she’s published with Bloomsbury I’ve read and adored), and Neal Schusterman (Specifically the Arc of a Scythe Trilogy). They all write in ways that affect me deeply and they mean a lot to me. I don’t necessarily try to emulate them, but they definitely are the authors I consult (by reading and rereading their works) to get ideas and to learn how to write.

Fanfic authors. I think I’ve made it pretty damn clear on here that I am hopelessly in love with @imaginethathaikyuu (I’m still too scared to tag her I’m sorry) and her writing. She means the whole world to me in every way. Her writing always hits me in a MAGICAL way. Especially her newer pieces. -Having an angsty fight - particularly Kuroo’s GETS TO ME. Like... damn. Makes me... melt. Idek why. It’s just, again, how real she makes it feel. From the atmosphere and setting to the way the characters behave. A lot of times in “argument angst” (is that a term?) the arguments feel so shallow and stupid. And I’m like “on my moodiest days I wouldn’t react like that” or “Kuroo WOULD NEVER”. But these feel so real. Ughhhh.

-You give Kenma a gift mid-stream 

-Kenma gets turned on during a stream - can you tell I love the way she writes streamer Kenma 😌 also this is my fav nsfw-esque Kenma piece solely because it feels accurate to his character in a beautiful way despite me headcanoning that he’s ace.

There’s a cute SMAU called Sunshine by @pudding-head-kenma and idk how she does it. It’s so good. I could never tell a story this complex, THIS WELL, using only text messages and tweets and such. She also does mini headcanons that are REALLY cute.

Anything and everything by @haik-choo is gold. Literal gold. The way she writes Tsukishima is IMMACULATE. Toxic headcanons, mischaracterizations all of its gold. And she’s a beautiful shitposter. She drops shit that makes me CACKLE at the most random times. All of it is a big yes for me.

when I finally found some time to answer this, I apparently had a LOT of words to say (wrote like 1000 of them that only covered Monday/Tuesday) but really… are we even mildly surprised?

I’ve attempted to condense my thoughts into my typical jot note style for easier reading.

- episodes this week were written by Martin Fustes, Sharon Marshall, Jane Pearson, Bill Taylor, Karin Young, and Sarah Bagshaw in that order - we should all be grateful to Emmerdale for giving us Bill Taylor on the first episode of Charity’s birthday (he was a co-writer with Isobel Cameron on the cellar kiss episode) - big love to our Vanity writing stans

- there was no Charity or Vanessa on Monday but I still watched because I’m INVESTED

- Nicola is my self-centred queen and I will not accept dismissal of how hilarious she is - I would be joyous to see her get a meatier storyline this year but will always love her as one of the comedic relief characters in the village

- the church storyline was wrapped up TOO FAST and I am UNHAPPY- in what universe would Harriet, morals central, forgive a wrong that quickly?- if the guilt doesn’t fester in her and then blow I will riot- good for Dawn standing her ground with the 40 different reasons she was mad in the span of 10 seconds

- I HAVE A GREAT RAGE ABOUT ALL THINGS INVOLVING MOIRA RIGHT NOW- I wrote a big, long paragraph about this but basically:- she was targeted by Nate and everyone seems to have forgotten this???- he was so damn pervy and creepy??? (”Come on, you know you want to.”)- she tried repeatedly to end things at the beginning???- everyone is focused on the choices she made at the end of the affair which is half valid- but now they are TAKING HER CHILDREN- and she’s LOSING IT- and Moira NEEDS HELP PLEASE- why is everyone more concerned with whether Cain will forgive either of them???- Someone Protect Moira 2020

- Tuesday was all about Noah’s anger and I respect it- Charity is a terrible mother and that’s been long understood, however much she tries now is mildly irrelevant in the face of how Noah has grown up- was there a scene missing in this ep, though???- because approximately 13.5 seconds later he was smiling and forgiving her

- I am here for the foreseeable future where Sarah/Noah are a brother/sister duo keeping each others’ secrets- get on with your lying selves, kids

- Fight Club in the shop on Wednesday- Graham knows exactly where to push when it comes to upsetting Charity and it feeds well to the d R a M a- love to see her explode as she does tbh- Charity a year ago would’ve punched this mans, so… GROWTH 

- Rhona is a God Damn dumb ass at this point- in what universe does Rhona (previously raped by an abusive, manipulative spouse) choose to be in a relationship with a proven violent man???- AND THEN WALK AROUND SAYING HE’S A GOOD MAN?!?!?- I am bitter about this blatant mischaracterization for the sake of plot goals- Zoe Henry’s accent, though… 

- CHARITY’S BIRTHDAY HOORAY- it was canon compliant for me that Vanessa would give a well thought-out but actually terrible gift and Charity’s reaction was… Charity- she thought the good thing was the 100% cashmere part for sure- her fashion sense is non-existent compared to Charity’s- it was all valid- (remember that time Vanessa grabbed a christening card on the way to the event and then didn’t pay for it until later because she was in a rush?)

- I was so worried for Sarah’s choices this whole episode and then they damn did bamboozle me- it makes me sad that most of you don’t get to see Sarah’s scenes- Katie Hill and Jack Downham are FANTASTIC 

- Charity stepped up a few times towards the end of the week to remind Cain of the impact of having a father who didn’t care about their mothers felt when they were kids and I am PROUD of her for that- also, those two together is really quite wonderful when you can mentally block out the less than lovely parts of their history… great chemistry

- Kim Tate hired Ryan and his best line all ep was: “This is a job interview, so like… shut up.”- side note for Thursday: Charity really, genuinely puttered around the pub doing what looked like actual work?? New Years Resolution? amazing

- second favourite line on Thursday was Marlon’s: “Matty told Vic, who told Aaron, who told me.”- loved Charity and Marlon gossiping together, I laughed out loud

- SARAH AND NOAH’S SCENE AT THE END OF THE EPISODE IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD WATCH

- by Friday, Charity was meeting Cara in the street and forming opinions- all of those opinions were “impressed”- Charity’s excitement in telling Vanessa about the happenings was adorable- also the TOUCH thank you Michelle

- we are all utterly confused by Nate being welcomed to their family cuppa time

well, that’s the gist of what I can remember experiencing this last week (6th January - 10th January). there were things involving Leyla/Liam, of course, and the impact on Jacob/Leeana, and more semantics regarding Theo’s arrival. but, alas, we’ll call this the centralization of my feelings for the time being.
