FILM REVIEW: Heneral Luna "A Filipino Biopic Film that Keeps you on the edge of your Seat"

Heneral Luna Film is one of the greatest movie that have been ever produced in the Philippine movie industry. There should be more movies like this to be given to people especially Filipinos, because it helps us more to understand why our country is like this in the first place and how it can shape us to be a true Filipino. At first, I thought it was a boring film because it didn't easily capture my attention but I was wrong, it reminded me the quote "Do not judge the book by its cover". It was really a magnificent and flabbergasting film.

"Tremendous" the word that can describe about Historical. The movie , character, plot, setting and climax are perfect. The movie is not trying hard but it is very entertaining to watch because the comedy present was nice addition to the film. Humor was such an unexpected yet integral element of the script, from those crisp off-color expletives of Luna to those sarcastic side comments of Lt. Rusca (Archie Alemania). The part of the movie that depicted reality in history was the battlefield/ great war of the Philippine soldier with their General which is Antonio Luna against the American Invaders. Luna Forge Ahead to the American Invaders because some of the soldiers were killed in that war and because of that the American invaders step-back because they saw the unity of the Philippine soldiers forge ahead to follow their general. The setting in the film was perfect and it portray the history by taking the film in the places where did the historical events happened. Their costume and props was nice and well-appreciated, it was full of effort because they coordinate to color, size, period and etc. and their setting and way of life really matched the historical events by revisiting the Philippine history , and showing the Consumption that the Filipino's experiencing. There are invaders , yet General Luna (John Arcilla) is indeed fiercely brave, ferocious and madly passionate but if we notice there is no solidarity to be found amongst countrymen only in fighting , personal interest and politicking. "Elegant" the word that can describe the historical storytelling it was very clear, exciting and engaging from beginning to end , with a fresh graphic novel to it by its attention-grabbing introduction which is the first key to hooked the audience/viewers.

About the Cinematography, words cannot describe my satisfaction about it, this film will grab you with its gorgeous cinematography. The images on the big screen had such vivid colors and innovative angles especially in the scene where Luna is attacking the american Invaders and when he is infront of the Philippine flag interviewed by Joven(journalist). The period production design and the costume design were meticulous detail in the scene where Ignacio recounts that the flashback scene to Luna's childhood. During a beautiful edited flashback sequence, there was a stylist scene about Rizal's execution that was so uniquely abd hauntingly rendered. There are most gruesome and graphic special effects showing the violent brutally of warfare which will shock you, the dark scenes means gloomy and keeping the information from someone. The narrative framing help the film so much because the frame to a story can do a lot of things, it can provide further context to the story, telling the audience how to view these events; it can suggest that the story is fiction or truth; it can give us exposition dumps efficient without impacting the pacing of the main narrative; or even draw attention to the artifice of the medium. The film-making is stunning , slick and stylish and the production looks pretty neat because the movie is paced nicely even at times its layered to different events , but put itself together consistently. For me, the most striking part/scene is in the cabinet meeting when General Luna said/ask to a part of cabinet who agree in the side of Sr. Paterno "Negosyo o Kalayaan, Bayan o Sarili. Pumili ka! ". He showed the loyalty , ultra-nationalism and a character of a great leader, what he wanted was to secure our country from the American Invaders and by saying that line, it mark my heart and teaches me not to become selfish but to become selfless and we need to bear in mind that "Bayan muna bago sarili ". The part of the film that has hidden meaning was the ending when the Philippine flag was burned because for me it symbolize that we are not totally free from our greatest enemy which is ourselves. The flow of the story was spectacular and magnificent because it is well elaborated, the historical events and the flow of the film reallt captures the viewer's attention that makes them understand easily the message.

"Sensational" a word that can describe about the characters, the actors really give justice to their role because their acting is beyond impressive specifically John Arcilla as Antonio Luna, he brings a genuine humanity and at the same time a really compelling sense of madness which terifically lives up to the complexity of its subject. The supporting also lend real gravity and even delight on screen really an awesome performance and acting skills that really give justice to their role. Aside from Luna, the most striking personality was Pako and Ruska because they serve and become faithful to one leader, you can see their efforts, determination and perseverance to do their job as a soldier which is to defend our nation from the enemies and invaders. They actually have the capacity to spread peace and unity, they have the willingness in their heart, they embody the spirit of volunteerism and a person that is " Where you go, I go" , they became the image of bravery and strength. The portrayal of the Characters help the film so much because without those portrator the film will not be made perfectly, it will not be effective without them , they are the one who give life to the film that give tbeir efforts to help the film succeed.

[About the Context], Our country is experiencing and facing hardships and problems nowadays but the politicians and their traits that we see in our government today. All the bickering , mudslinging and turncoatism for the sake of more riches and power in becoming a commodity inside the Philippine Politics. No wonder that our politocians (not generalizing them) wants the majority to remain poor and ignorant fpr them to easily manipulate the masses. "Self-Interests" the undying sin of our history and likewise in our current situation, the root of all corruption has been rampant in our society , some of the leaders easily dont care about what problems this country's facing what really is important for them is their self- interest. Just like Luna said " Wala ba tayong karapatan na mabuhay ng malaya?" , we are living in a Democratic country and in the law it state in Article 3, section 4 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution that we have the freedom in our country but we are not totally free from ourselves, we are not free from the chains of self-interest and underlying principles in life. There aee some leaders that are Quisling but also there are some soldier who is willing to die for our "Inang Bayan" a real hero like Luna.

Overall, Heneral Luna is not just a film but a wake up call driving the ever reminder that some things never change. Its message- we Filipinos are our own greatest and worst enemies, lacking in resolution and torn by self interest. It is a story representative of not just our current and still chaotic political landscape but of who we are and what we can do but don't. Though it may not be perfect in its execution , the film does it's duty in leaving with the question lingering " Negosyo o Kalayaan, Bayan O Sarili."

Edith Runekill sits down in the driver's seat and turns the keys in the ignition. She's making a Good Decision.

Edith Runekill: "Nice thing about being out this late is that there's not really any other cars out on the open road."

"So you can drive really fast."

"Y'know. If you like that kinda thing."

Grim smirks

Grim: "I could get used to it."

Edith Runekill revvs the engine, and pushes down the accelerator (KIDS DONT DRINK AND DRIVE).

Grim doesn't fasten her seatbelt (KIDS ALWAYS FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT)

In this session, Grim and Edith raise hell. Buckle in, this and the next few are RP-heavy sessions.

The set-up: Grim and Edith get up to some good old-fashioned country girl fun.

The Game: It’s evening, the group’s checked in to a motel for the night, but neither Grim nor Edith feel like turning in. They find each other in the forecourt--Grim writing something in a journal and Edith emerging from a traveler’s shrine. They both agree that the motel, the car, and the whole situation feels too claustrophobic and they decide to take a walk.

Grim: "Lotta memories even all the way out here for you, huh?"

Edith Runekill accepts the cigarette gladly

Grim offers her a light and then lights her own

Edith Runekill: "Yeah. Getting out this far from New Luskan wasn't hard once I got my driver's license. And some of the kids at school lived out here, too, the district extends past city limits a ways."

Grim nods, eyeing the darkened Corn Wastes peppered with small distant buildings

Grim: "Gotta say, kinda nice bein' back out somewhere that ain't all paved 'n high rises."

Edith Runekill nods.

Edith Runekill: "I'm happier in the city, but you really learn how much you take just... having space for granted, when you're living in some shoebox-sized aparment out west."

"Air's probably healthier to breathe, too." She takes a drag on her cigarette, but because it is 1933 she does not see the irony of this.

"And, you know, you can see the stars.”

Grim grunts and nods, glancing upward as they walk

Grim: "Half familiar out here. Time we get out east, I'll know 'em again."

Edith Runekill nods again. "Seein' the stars around here's like seeing old friends again, really. When I was a kid I read every book I could about 'em, and learned all their names and what different cultures saw when they looked up in the sky; the names they gave their constellations, the figures they immortalized in the heavens."

Edith Runekill: "First real time I started thinking about history and mythology and old stories, really."

Grim smiles a little

Grim: "What're these, out here?"

Edith Runekill: "We call that one the longboat. That one's been watching over us since long before we came here; Iluskan reavers navigated by it back in the old days. But west of here, back along the Dragon Coast, it's the Longbow. And if you go further south, it's the Minotaur's Horns."

"The people who lived on the Golden Plains before the spellplague, before we came along, called it Chauntea's Plough. Even though I don't really see it."

Grim watches where she's pointing and nods, taking a drag on her cigarette before she responds

Grim: "Heard've it as the Plough, or the Moon's Rest."

"Don't barely see it out east, except dependin' on the season."

Edith Runekill: "Neverwinter's not really a place for stargazing no matter what season it is, truth be told. City lights drown out most all the stars."

Grim nods

Grim: "Always miss 'em in Thay. Different kinda lights there, though."

Edith Runekill: "Lotsa neon lights out that way, right? There's some places like that in Neverwinter, for the tourists, but mostly the light's just the natural consequence of squeezing eight million people into one city. Lotta light, lotta heat."

Grim: "Mm. Hard to describe 'til you see it. Ain't never known a place like it, for good or ill."

Edith Runekill: "I seen Thay in pictures, but that's not really the same. And I read all the old history of Thay, the rise and fall of the Zulkins, Szass Tam, and such. But that doesn't really tell you what kinda place it is now."

"Anymore than cracking open a book about Old Sespech'll tell you about Plaguewrought Land."

Grim glances across the open fields and grunts

Grim: "Folks out here seem real...rooted in history." A little pointed there, perhaps.

Edith Runekill: "Well, not much was left of Sespech but its history, after the Spellplague. And the first Homesteaders to come here when it was safe again didn't come with much more than the shirts on their backs and the history in their stories."

"Kinda has a way on pressing in on you from both ends."

Grim didn't mean that but it's okay. She takes another drag on her cigarette and huffs out smoke.

Grim: "Guess everyone's got their reason."

They muse more on the nature of city versus country life. The city’s full of constant change while the country tries to stay rooted in its old traditions.

Grim: "That's the country for you. Ain't no reason to go changin' things that ain't broke, for the most part."

"In the cities, everythin's breakin' over and over every day."

Grim takes a contemplative drag on her cigarette and shrugs

Edith Runekill: "Mn. Yeah. But..."

Edith Runekill frowns, and looks faintly agonized. "Considering how things went back home I can't help but think things here are broke afterall."

Grim: "Out where I come from, land's different but folks are farmers just the same. Old grudges on Thay still alive 'n well. Folks keep the house spirits, look to the witches, same as they have on hundreds of years."

Grim glances at Edith and nods

Grim: "Some things gotta break."

Grim then changes tracks and asks Edith what it was like growing up in this place, romance-wise.

Grim: "How was it, growin' up here, bein'...one for the ladies?"

Edith Runekill: "Well I managed to not realize it until... like... a couple weeks ago. So." She smiles ruefully. "Could be better."

Grim: "Y'never had a, uh, a real good friend out here? Or grown folks to look to or nothin'?"

Edith Runekill shakes her head. "The only place I ever saw things like that was in history. Ancient poetesses strumming lyres. Warrior queens. Things like that. It was all stuff that appealed to me, but it seemed like it was something that was gone. Something for someone else in some other time."

Edith Runekill: "Turns out actually it just meant that my only exposure to anything other than the way things were here was in history books so of course it seemed like a thing only in history."

Grim watches her quietly, taking this in

Grim: "Mm."

"Ain't no wonder you never thought on it, I guess."

Edith Runekill looks thoughtful; she's thinking this stuff over for basically the first time ever.

Edith Runekill: "Guess some of my friendships with other girls were... um. Kind of..."

"Intense?"

"But that's just how it is when you're a girl."

Grim smirks

Grim: "That so?"

"Guess I wouldn't know."

Edith Runekill smiles, embarrassed. "I'm still... thinking things through."

Edith Runekill: "Looking at a lot of things with fresh eyes. You know."

Grim nods, more serious

Grim: "I do."

"Weren't so much of that where I came from, neither. I know how it is, comin' around at first."

Edith Runekill: "Yeah. It's like... it's not just a thing that happened all of a sudden? It was always right there in plain sight but I just never seen it. And since I like boys too I thought... I thought I was just how everyone was..."

Grim nods

Grim thinks of something and laughs a little, ashing her cigarette

Grim: "Y'know, I had a boy of my own once."

"Long time back, before I figured my own head out."

"Was a real quick way to seein' what was what."

Edith Runekill: "Ha."

"Kinda a miracle my high school boyfriend didn't turn me off boys entirely. Lucky subsequent boys were an improvement, I guess."

Grim: "To each their own, I guess."

Grim then asks if Edith ever even had any fun, growing up in a place like this. Edith confesses that the town they’re in was where she and her peers would buy moonshine.

Grim thinks about this, then breaks into a slow grin

Grim: "I recall somesuch about jumpin' out've cars?"

Edith Runekill: "...oh, did I happen to mention that?"

"Turns out the grass here's real good at breaking your fall."

"With the help of a little liquid courage, anyway." She smiles in a most un-Edith-like manner.

Grim is kind of all about that smile

Grim: "They still sell this shit?"

Edith Runekill nods. "And getting ahold of it's gonna be a lot easier than it woulda been back then since I'm actually an adult now."

Edith Runekill: "I mean nobody really cares out here but it's simpler."

Grim: "Well hell, old times' sake?"

Edith Runekill: "Now that I've had jhuild I'm pretty sure I can drink literally anything."

Grim snorts

Grim: "I gotta show you up after that. Ain't never gonna hear the last, if not."

Edith Runekill: "You're on."

Slipping back into her old high school routine, Edith leads Grim to a shack/stand by the motel: 'Aldorn's Magical Supplies, Potions, & Tinctures'.

Edith Runekill: Edith knocks shave-and-a-haircut on the side of the stand and a metal shutter opens, revealing an extremely old-looking human man. He's wearing an apron over wizard's robes, and his pointed hat, while tattered, is perched at a jaunty angle. He doesn't look Iluskan, but when he speaks, his accent is pure Plaguewrought.

Nora R.: "Well, well, well, if it isn't little Edie Runekill all growed up! Heard you skipped town, Runekill."

Edith Runekill: "Kinda did. But I'm passin' through again. And now that I'm a qualified wizard let's just say I'm burning through the 'potions' and 'tinctures' real quick these days."

Grim looks at Edith

Nora R.: The old wizard peers at Grim. "Who's your friend?"

Grim: "A friend."

Edith Runekill: "Um. Anyway." She fishes her wallet out of her purse and slides some gold notes across the counter. "I'd like to buy two... healing potions."

Nora R.: "Now, before I accept your money, since you been away for a while I feel obliged to remind you that since you're not actually a high school student anymore. You... you know you're allowed to just buy normal alcohol from a real liquor store, right?"

Grim has never seen an illicit deal this nerdy in her life

Edith Runekill: "I... well. I gotta lotta memories of this place, is all."

Nora R.: He takes the money, shrugging dramatically. "One like you in every class, I reckon. Gimme just a sec." The shutter closes with a bang.

Grim: "Never knew you had it in you, Runekill."

Nora R.: There's some clattering from inside the stand, and the shutter opens up again. The man hands Edith two large flasks that don't even slightly look like healing potions.

"Mixed you up something a little special this time, Runekill. Call it... a belated graduation present."

Edith tells Grim people have been buying moonshine from this fellow since her parents were teens. Grim wonders how the town can be considered “dry” if he’s been here as long as anyone remembers to sell his liquor but Edith shrugs her off. They each take a drink--it’s not as strong as the jhuild, but it’s not far off, either--and keep on with the evening.

Grim: "I'll attest. You got some grit, Runekill."

Grim raises her flask to Edith and takes another swig. It's surprisingly drinkable for something that takes all the skin off the inside of her mouth

Grim: "Where'd you kids go to huck rocks, anyhow?"

Edith Runekill: "Well if we go exactly there there'd probably be some kids huckin' rocks still."

Grim smirks

Grim: "Fair 'nough."

Edith Runekill: "Still! Let's think of something to do. Drinking's only step one. Step two is findin' some hell to raise."

Grim raises her flask to Edith

Grim: "You're speakin' my language."

Grim glances towards the motel

Grim: "Reckon Syd'd notice us borrowin' the car?

Edith Runekill: "Even if she does, and she won't, it's just legitimate sightseeing. I'm just showin' you 'round my old stomping grounds. Nothin' wrong with that."

Grim nods to her

Grim: "She can recall the damn thing anyway."

Edith Runekill: "I'm sure it'll be fine."

Grim heads for the car with no further debate, pausing to unhitch it from the camper

It’s the ‘30s, people would think you strange if you didn’t drink and drive.

Edith Runekill: The car zooms down the darkened, winding highway. Windmills, barns, and silos are silhouetted against the starry sky. Brightly lit billboards for roadside attractions punctuate the trip, as do seedy rest areas and motels blazing with neon light. The neon's new, even just in the last four years; Edith eyes it curiously as she drives past.

Finally, she pulls off the road and onto a clearing adjacent to a barbed wire fence. The car skids to a halt, sending up a cloud of dust. It looks really cool, but it gets in Edith's face so she just starts coughing.

"Well! Here we are."

Grim vaults out and heads after her, sizing up the fence curiously

Edith Runekill attaches the sword in its scabbard to her belt, and then pulls a gun (!!!) out of the glove compartment and puts it in a holster.

Edith Runekill hops out of the car and starts walking towards the fence.

Edith Runekill stares at one particular stretch of the fence. "Oh, they finally fixed the hole. Guess we're stuck."

Edith Runekill: "Haha just kidding."

Edith Runekill Knocks the gate open.

Grim simultaneously knocks Edith in the back of her head with the heel of her palm

Edith Runekill: "Ow!"

Grim: "Sorry, y'just reminded me."

"Now we're even."

Edith Runekill: "Wh... oh."

"Ohhhhh."

Edith Runekill laughs.

Edith Runekill: "Had that one coming."

Grim: "Hell you go listenin' to Pepper for, I just don't know."

The pair of them trespass into the area’s local junkyard/makeout point/teen loitering arena. Edith has plans to practice her non-magical target shooting at the range.

Edith Runekill: "And by 'shooting range' I mean 'a board we put bottles on'."

Grim slowly grins. A grin that takes over her entire face as she looks at Edith.

Grim: "Fuck yeah I do."

Edith Runekill: "Neat." She starts walking down one of the paths, until they finally arrive at a slightly more open area. Off to the side, there's a sign with a long list of names and numbers scratched into it. At the very bottom it says "Edith R.: 0".

"High scores," she says, ruefully.

Grim looks over the list, her eye settling last on "Edith R." She snorts.

Edith Runekill: There's a few other familiar names-- it doesn't go far enough for, say, Pa Runekill or Pastor John, but you see a "Tom" in the middle of the pack. And a "Grace" near the top.

Grim: "I bet you could flick a fly out the air with one've them magical hands you get. How come you ain't able at this?"

Edith Runekill: "Since this was back before I could mage hand a feather off a duck. I'd like to think I'd do better now. But I guess there's only one way to find out!"

Grim: "Show me what you got, Runekill."

Turns out she doesn’t have much and misses the bottle on the first shot, but does pretty well on the second. Grim takes a shot to show her how it’s done and they alternate killing bottles while she gives Edith some tips.

Grim: "Ain't shot target like this in years."

Edith Runekill: "Neither have I. Well. I guess I ain't actually shot the targets ever before now. Shot at 'em, maybe."

Grim: "Used to shoot like this with the kids, back on the circuit. Me 'n Byrd and Kray 'n the others out've Thay."

Grim finds a low wall to settle on and smoke as Edith sets back up

Edith Runekill: "Universal pastime of the bored yet well-armed." She shoots Grim a grin as she lines up another shot.

"Looks like my luck's turnin' around!"

Grim: "Ain't no luck about it, you got your eye in." Grim steps up to take her shot.

Grim almost wangs it, but catches the bottle on one side, spinning it to the ground to shatter

Edith Runekill: "I think that one's just wounded."

Grim makes a Psshh sound

Grim: "Like hell. You go count the shards, that's a dead-ass soldier."

Edith Runekill walks up to inspect the fallen warrior. She puts up a hand and casts Mending on it. She cradles it in her arms and carries it up to Grim with mock solemnity.

Edith Runekill: "It was touch and go, but... he's gonna make it. He's going home..."

Grim cracks up

Grim: "Well shit, now I ain't got the heart."

Edith Runekill laughs too, and gently sets the bottle down. "A hero..."

Grim nods and tips her hat to the bottle

Grim: "Doin' about as well as us, this far."

Edith Runekill: "Ha."

"Guess if it ever comes down to me needin' to make a shot with this little gun we're probably in trouble..."

"But every arrow in the quiver counts, y'know?"

"Every arrow in every mixed metaphor."

"Wait that wasn't even mixed was it"

Edith Runekill takes another swig of 'healing potion' rather than think about this

Grim: "Comes down to it, you can make a shot." Grim raises her flask to Edith and takes a swig. It doesn't make her flinch any more. That might be a bad sign.

"I'd bet my life on you, anyhow."

Edith Runekill: "And I'd bet my life on you. And, truth be told, probably already have a bunch of times, kinda scrapes we get into." She takes another swig. She hadn't flinched at all from the start. Which is probably a Very Bad sign.

Grim nods at this, eyeing the target bottles

Grim: "Hell, if I die by your side, I reckon it'll be about as good as I could hope for."

Edith Runekill smiles. "I'm optimistic enough to think we maybe got a shot at this. But... if not. Well. Hell of a way to go."

Grim: "Right?" Grim smirks and smacks Edith on the shoulder.

"Ain't ever trusted many, and it's been a long time since, but-" She looks at Edith and shrugs, huffing around her cigarette. "-I sure as hell trust you."

Edith Runekill smiles, and actually wipes away a tear or two (!).

Edith Runekill: "Aw, Grim..."

"That's... you got no idea what an honor that is to hear from you."

Grim snorts and raises her rifle

Grim: "Don't get used to it."

Grim asks Edith what set her on the wizard path, she seems like she’d be a good enough fighter if she’d put her mind to it. Edith says it’s not so much the fighting that she enjoys, but the knowledge and learning that goes into being an accomplished wizard that she loves. Even though she never had much of an education, Grim can admire that in Edith and appreciate the passion she has for her profession.

Grim asks if she thinks young Edith would be proud of how she turned out. Overall, she thinks her younger self would be impressed, even with as sheltered as she used to be.

They take a break from shooting to talk about Edith’s old high school in New Luskan--they drove by it on the way to the junkyard. Specifically they talk about its mascot, the Rashemi Barbarian complete with plaster and wood statue. The Rashemi, if it isn’t clear, are an ethnic minority and it’s the 30s and we’re in fantasy Nebraska so the statue looks about how you might imagine.

Grim: "What d'you reckon she'd make of that mascot?"

Edith Runekill: "Too sheltered to get why it's bad, probably."

"That stuff just fades into the background until you been away a while..."

"And then you just see it and you're like, how was I just okay seeing that every day as a kid?"

Grim glances at Edith and smiles

Grim: "Wanna go fuck it up?"

Edith Runekill: "Hm. I'm not... I'm not sure."

Edith Runekill takes another drink

Edith Runekill: "Okay, I'm sure."

Grim grins

Grim: "That's my fuckin' girl."

Edith Runekill: "We'll be doing the town a public service anyway, that thing's an embarrassment."

Grim: "No fuckin' shit." Grim hops up and heads back towards the car.

The night is going super well.

They start driving back towards the school and along the way, Grim reminds Edith about the car jumping.

Grim: "Hey Runekill."

Edith Runekill takes advantage of the fact that it's the 1930s and everyone still drives like manics to drive like a maniac.

Grim: "How fast this car goin' when you jumped out b'fore?"

Edith Runekill: "Um... slower than this. This car's got more punch to it than anything we were driving around."

"But this is about the right stretch of highway for a soft landing..."

Grim: "Y'wanna break another record?"

Edith Runekill grins the grin of somebody driving like a maniac and willing to do something extremely dangerous to get hyped up to destroy some public property.

Grim has never been seriously into Edith until this moment

Edith Runekill: "You first."

Grim stands up and crouches on the passenger side door, then hurls herself out and rolls

Grim rolls over and flops on her back, then sits up and looks to Edith in the speeding car

Edith Runekill trusts the Magic Paladin Steed Car to know when to stop and follows Grim out the car. What a good idea. What a good thing, that Edith is doing. This is good.

Edith Runekill gracefully flips out of the car and onto the pavement which was rushing by. [infernal] "SHIIIIIIIT!"

Edith Runekill: "Oof. Well."

Grim watches Edith wipe out and swears, launching up to her feet to race over

Edith Runekill sits up. She's got a nasty scrape where her calf scraped the pavement, and a rapidly darkening bruise on the side of her face. She gives Grim a thumb's up.

Edith Runekill: "Guess that's the first time I did it from the driver's side..."

"Didn't compensate for that..."

Grim slows as Edith gets up, then shakes her head and snorts

Grim: "Dumbass."

They both compose themselves and break into the high school for a little after hours education on proper respect for all cultures.

Edith Runekill stares up at the imposing figure of the New Luskan High Barbarian.

Grim comes to a halt by her shoulder and follows her gaze

Grim: "...what a piece've hateful fuckin' ignorant ass bullshit."

".......let's light it on fire."

Edith Runekill: "I was gonna offer a, uh, non-fire-based way to dismantle it. But... but if you want a fire, I can set a fire."

Edith Runekill looks delighted at this turn of events.

Grim: "Wipe it the fuck out, Runekill."

"If my folks died this way, this thing don't oughta get no better."

Edith Runekill does some mental math, determines that nothing else flammable is within a 20 foot radius of the Barbarian, and then Does What Comes Naturally To Her

Grim flinches a little, closing her eyes and turning away as it goes up in flames

Edith Runekill puts a steadying hand on Grim's shoulder.

Grim flinches but doesn't shake her off. She takes a deep breath and then a swig from her flask without opening her eyes

Edith Runekill: The NLHS Barbarian burns and burns and burns. It's already nothing more than a metal superstructure embedded in a nimbus of flame; everything that made it identifiable has been burned away.

Edith Runekill would never admit it in current company. But, privately, she thinks that this looks totally sick, and that fire is really cool and good.

Edith Runekill: Runekill's runes-- usually a soft blue-- are all glowing fiery red; it's the first time she's cast a spell with it. She's... pretty into it, honestly.

Grim seems rooted to the spot for a minute, not opening her eyes. She takes a deep breath and then another, and then she raises a hand to find Edith's arm silently.

Edith Runekill sheathes the sword and lays her other hand on Grim's.

Edith Runekill: "Want me to put it out now?"

Grim grunts

Edith Runekill: "Put it out in the fantastically destructive way this piece of garbage deserves, of course."

Edith Runekill takes out Runekill again and summons an Ice Storm.

The burning statue is pummeled by a column of ice, snow, and wind. The fire is put out, an the metal frame-- badly oxidized by the fire-- is crushed by the force. There's nothing left of the Barbarian but ash and rebar.

Edith Runekill: "Well. We sure showed him."

"I... I can't believe I did that, haha."

Grim inhales but doesn't open her eyes, still gripping Edith's hand for a minute

Grim: ".....he done for?"

Edith Runekill: "Yeah. It's gone."

Grim nods

Edith Runekill: "We... should probably get gone, too."

Grim: "Yeah, no shit." She finally opens her eyes and glances at the smoking ruins of the mascot, then turns about to head for the door.

Vandalism is a cool and victimless crime and this will have no lasting consequences.

The pair gets back in the car to head back to the motel, Grim cursing the town as they drive and telling Edith she’s better than the place. Edith takes the compliment, but acknowledges it took a lot of work on her part and that most people in the area are content not to change.

Grim: "Don't rightly give a shit about other folks. You came outta here, an' you made somethin' good've yourself. An' I ain't seen much good since we got here." Grim falls into a thoughtful silence for a moment, then adds. "They din't never deserve you."

Edith Runekill: "Yeah," she says, quietly, barely audible over the car's engine, "But that's a hard thing to reckon with about the place that made you."

Grim remains silent for some time, then shifts in her seat and slugs back some moonshine

Grim: "Place that made me ain't on earth no more."

"Burned down, 'long with everyone that might've been my kin."

"I don't know what a place oughta be, that makes you, but I know you're better'n this."

Edith Runekill drives silently for a while, taking this in.

Edith Runekill: "That's... an awful thing to gotta go through."

Grim doesn't answer for a while, watching the dark fields race by

Grim: "Don't remember it, mostly."

"Only know what I'm told."

Edith Runekill drives silently a while. She hears a siren off in the distance, in the direction of New Luskan, and speeds up.

Grim glances towards the mirror at the sound of the sirens, then back out at the fields and takes another swig from her flask

Edith Runekill: "It's just... this place is always gonna be the context I came from. A lot's changed about me since I left-- or even before I left, in the run-up to making that choice-- but I still got a lot of it in me, too. I talk Plaguelands. I still get a thrill outta driving like I am right now, all alone on the road. I still believe in Auril, even if... even if Pastor Jack tried to hurt me...? I still look at this landscape and think home. But it's not, it's not, it's not."

Grim: "S'where you come from. Like I come from the far out desert, no matter how far I go." She's staring off at the endless fields in the dark. "I come out've ash 'n ghosts, 'n that sticks. Don't matter where you live after. But it matters how y'choose to live, after."

Edith Runekill: "Yeah... and. And I case how I chose to live, in the end, was in the city. Even though it's somewhere where the stars don't shine, where everyone's all cramped together, where there's smog in the air."

"Or... or no. Maybe what I really chose... was this."

"Chasing Szass Tam halfway across Faerun."

"Since it seems... like the right thing to do?"

"I dunno."

Grim smiles a little

Grim: "Don't know myself, Runekill. But I know I don't regret a second, bein' out here with y'all."

Edith Runekill: "I... regret a few seconds, maybe. Like when I jumped outta that car."

"And frankly I regret thinking going out here again would be a good idea at all?"

"But... but I don't regret... I don't regret this."

"This... whole... thing..."

Grim snorts and glances at Edith

Grim: "Y'gave it your best. Don't ever go havin' regrets on that account."

"Truth be told, I wish I could go on with the. uh..." she trails off searching for a word. "The...faith you got."

"In people. In places. In history turnin' out right."

"I got no faith in folks. S'how it took me so long comin' around to all y'all."

They finish their heart-to-heart by noticing the police are behind and closing in. Being the only speeding car on the road near a scene of wanton arson has a way of making you a target.

Grim glances at the police lights in the mirror and purses her lips

Grim: "Shit, we gotta lose this heat."

"Else Syd'll be real disappointed."

Edith Runekill: [Infernal] "Shit, I thought they'd still be back in town..."

[Infernal] "Fucking shit-ass fucking pigs fuck them."

[Common] "Don't worry, I'm sure we can shake 'em."

Grim glances at Edith. She has no idea what any of those words mean, but it's weirdly hot.

Grim will never admit it

Grim: "You done this before?"

Edith Runekill: "...no. Not... not as such."

"I know some side-roads, though."

Grim: "Alright, so let's get it right first time."

Grim nods to Edith and sits forward, squinting at the stars to get a bearing on where they are

Edith Runekill makes a truly alarming hairpin turn past a billboard for fantasy Burmashave onto a rocky dirt road.

Grim hollers despite herself. Blood will out.

Edith Runekill: "This oughta loop back around to the motel... trouble is I don't know if the cops know to look this way..."

Grim shifts up to sit on the passenger side door, leaning over to sight along her rifle at the pursuing cars

Grim: "Don't go leadin' them to the others, we got this."

Grim wangs a shot off the road just ahead of the cops

Grim curses and reloads

Nora R.: The car vanishes.

Grim drops suddenly and rolls as she hits the road

Edith Runekill Blinks

Grim lunges to reach for Edith, only to freeze when Edith vanishes right in front of her

Grim watches the cop cars pass and then kind of fREAKS OUT??

Grim scrambles into the middle of the road, feeling around like she might find an invisible Edith

Edith Runekill reappears.

Edith Runekill: "Sorry. Blink cloak."

"Had to vanish in a hurry after I messed up the landing."

Grim stumbles and lands on her hands and knees, staring at Edith

Grim: "SHIT."

"You scared the HELL outta me, girl."

Edith Runekill: "I'm... kinda disappointed in the car."

Edith Runekill: "Destroying the Barbarian was the right thing to do."

"Sorry..."

"You okay?"

Grim flops down to sit in the middle of the road

Grim: " Well, shit, I guess so, since you ain't DEAD or nothin'."

Somehow the paladin car wasn’t down for the festivities, leaving them to walk back to the motel. It’s a nice night for it, anyway, and it’s easier to talk when you’re not driving and being chased by Johnny law. Despite the turn the evening took, Grim and Edith both agree they’re feeling better than they were after leaving the farm.

Grim looks across at Edith as she lights up, studying her

Grim: "Y'know, first day we met, never would've reckoned on spendin' a night this way with you."

Edith Runekill: "Yeah. Remember the next day? The museum? Me digging out the records for everything Mal and I recovered from Tethyamar?"

"Guess that's two times now I met somebody important in my life in a way where I wound up frantically trying to provenance a bunch of artifacts."

Grim laughs a little

Grim: "Y'wanna know the truth?"

"Din't know shit about what I was lookin' at. I just wanted t'see how you pair acted under pressure."

Edith Runekill laughs.

Edith Runekill: "I was real mad that you thought Mal had stolen stuff... but also I was a little mad you thought Mal had stolen stuff when, if we had stolen anything, then darn it, I woulda stolen it too."

"Felt like I wasn't getting credit."

Grim laughs at this

Grim: "Shit, Runekill. Weren't nothin' personal."

"I only get paid for the one on the sheet."

Like all drunks having a good time, they also have deep philosophical discussions.

Edith Runekill: "Ahh, women in academia never get written up for the work they do."

Grim: "Or jailed, I guess." Grim nudges Edith with a smirk.

Edith Runekill: "Well. If we keep up acts of cultural criticism like what we did tonight I might manage it."

Grim: "If I ain't behind bars yet, I reckon you got a long future on the outside." Grim toasts Edith with her flask and takes a long swig.

Edith Runekill: "Or maybe a short one, depending on how things shake out with Tam."

Edith Runekill grins and takes a swig, too.

Grim: "Fuck that rotten ol' Thayer asshole." Grim turns her head and spits into the ditch. "He died more oftener'n us so far, ain't he?"

Edith Runekill: "Plus he apparently got locked in a basement for... oh, 1400 or so and only just managed to find his way out."

*since... oh, 1400 or so

Grim nods and snorts

Grim: "Fuckin' dumbshit. We got his ass dead to rights, don't even worry 'bout it."

Edith Runekill is still drunk enough to believe this

Edith Runekill: "Yeah. He's a goner."

Grim toasts and swigs again, looping an arm around Edith's shoulders as they walk

Grim: "Like I told your pa, Runekill. You're gonna be one've them folk books get written on. That's for real."

Edith Runekill: "You said that to Pa?"

"Well, first, thanks, that's really flattering."

"But, second... y'know. Yeah. I think we are. This thing we're doing... it's the kinda thing stories are made of."

Edith Runekill looks up at the stars again as they trudge down the dirt access road. "Not sure what they'll say about this part of the story, granted."

Grim snorts

Grim: "They don't never tell this part."

"Probly just as well."

Edith Runekill: "On the bright side, if they do tell that part everyone will remember what a bullshit mascot in a bullshit town that was."

Grim: "If nobody remember that shit, I ain't ever about to complain."

Edith Runekill: "Anyway. Every story could use a lighter interlude."

"Something to give everyone a break even when things are getting rough."

Grim nods at this

Edith Runekill: "So. We've done wonders for pacing, is what I'm getting at here."

"The car vanishing even left room for this lovely walk together and a long talk under the stars."

Stares at the camera like I’m in The Office.

Edith makes a mental note to ask Syd what the deal was with the car: as far as she’s concerned, they didn’t do anything immoral by destroying the statue and losing the cops. Grim admits she never really saw eye to eye with paladins--Syd included--but trusts her heart’s in the right place.

Edith Runekill: "Yeah... she... she seems different from most other paladins I known. Or... or heard about." She casts her eyes downwards, remembering the story Mal told.

Grim: "...more I find folks workin' off their religions, less it seems regular people can stand up to the gods."

"Ain't one of us one thing or another. Not like the gods. Even Ilmater."

Edith Runekill: "Faith's... important to me. It's... a community, a cultural tradition. History that ties us to our ancestors even when they were far away, even when they were leading totally different lives. It's still a thread connecting us to the North, y'know? It's... it's important. Even after everything that's happened these past few days it's important. But... I mean..."

"That can't be the only tool you use to figure out what the right thing to do is, right?"

Grim nods slowly

Edith Runekill: "When your only tool's a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. When your only tool's Auril, every problem looks like it should be set on fire."

"Wait. Well. You know what I mean."

Grim glances at Edith and nods.

Grim: "Findin' Ilmater's the first time in my life I ever had anythin' to work for. But I ain't ever measured up. Don't know that anyone does. Maybe it's part've the deal, that we gotta keep on tryin', or maybe this world just ain't made for mortals the way it's made for gods."

"Either way, I found somethin' to live for. An' for me, that matters. Even if it don't to Ilmater, in the grand ol' scheme."

The triumphant pair returns to the motel to find Syd and Pepper still awake and outside.

Grim spots the silhouettes of Pepper and Syd in the badminton court and raises her empty flask to them in greeting as they approach.

Edith Runekill looks super thrilled to be back, even though she's limping slightly, bruised all over half her face, and she has a bleeding gash on one leg still.

Grim is a little less thrilled, she actually quite liked being out in the middle of absolutely nowhere

Pepper has her racquet down at her side and has been having a somewhat animated conversation with Sydney. She catches sight of Grim's flask glinting under the street lamp and seems to wince.

Sydney Gaydos follows Pepper's eyes to see a certain pair returning and oh, the usually cheerful dragonborn glowers at seeing them. "It seems they finally decided to show up, " she comments to Pepper.

Pepper raises the racket a precise 45 degrees before lowering it like a drawbridge.

Grim expects approximately zero pushback from these two, and looks at Edith as they arrive back in the forecourt

Hm.

Grim: "What's the story, Runekill, you headin' right on up to bed?"

Edith Runekill: "Well. Should probably eat something first to soak up all this.... healing potion. And... and drink some water. But yeah, I'm pretty... pretty exhausted, by this point."

"Good exercise, though."

"We oughta go for more walks."

Grim smirks and claps her shoulder, then nods to the all night eatery

Grim: "Get you a burger?"

Edith Runekill: "Auril, yes."

Pepper , in a sing-song voice in Elvish at NO ONE IN PARTICULAR sings "[Elvish] You fu-ucked u-up." It's just what she sang at the Pastor back at Edith's house. Weird.

Pepper scratches at her head with the racket and admires the gutters on the motel.

Edith Runekill: {t Pepper: wait what}

Sydney Gaydos waits til they get nice and close before stepping to the side and stopping them. "You both have some serious explaining to do, " she grunts, staring down at both of them.

Edith Runekill: {t Pepper: im so drunk}

Grim steers Edith towards the eatery, still kind of relying on leaning on her to stay upright and walk in a straight line

Grim stops as they almost collide with Syd

Grim sizes up Syd, mildly perplexed

Grim: "Some problem, Scales?"

Pepper gives Grim the most pitiful of looks. So this is how her parents felt oh-so-many times.

Edith Runekill: {t Pepper: oh shit}

{t Pepper: peppper}

Sydney Gaydos: "You can say that, " she starts off slow. "Taking Gaydos' holy paladin mount on a joyride to the country without her permission then FIRING on police vehicles?!"

Pepper: {T Edith: whyyyyyyy}

Edith Runekill: {t Pepper: im so druink rigt now. did you know that.}

Grim looks right back. She's never experienced parental disapproval, this means nothing to her

Edith Runekill has learned not one day ago that parents are bullshit and is feeling punchy

Oh.

Edith Runekill: "We destroyed a... a hated symbol of the racist, backwards attitudes of Plaguewrought Land, and then took certain actions to evade the enforcers of that violent cultural hegemony who objected to our political message."

Grim nods in affirmation of Edith

Pepper squints at Edith, then looks to Grim for help deciphering that mess.

Edith Runekill: {t Pepper: we lit that awful high school amscot statue on fire and good riddance it was so tacky and made the whole town look bad and just driving by it made me feel grossed out but everyone heres just used to it so Drastic Measures Were Takaen}

Pepper rubs her temple with her free hand.

Pepper: "Okay," she says in response to nothing in particular.

Edith Runekill: "It's not our fault the cops chose to leverage their monopoly on state violence to repress our important act of cultural criticism!"

Grim has no idea what Edith just said, but she nods anyway

Sydney Gaydos regards both of them carefully. "And you thought by shooting at them, which could possibly of caused harm to them, was right? For your own actions? Did you even consider thinking far ahead? Or acting on impulse as you usually do?" Sydney turns to look straight at Grim.

Grim: "Din't nobody shoot at 'em, I went for takin' out a tire." Grim eyeballs Syd right back, getting a little annoyed just by merit of being stared at.

Sydney Gaydos: "Knowing your skill and powers, Grim, " she finally says it, "you could have easily blew out a front end of a car. Did you not think that could cause harm? A tire going out, cars crashing, and so on?"

Edith Runekill: "Sounds like the car's aligned itself with the hegemonic power structure of Plaguewrought Land's cultural mores."

Grim: "Did that shit happen?"

Oh boy.

Sydney Gaydos FUMES. "The car is directly tied to Gaydos' own moral code! She would have also been against firing at law enforcement." Back to Grim. "Knowing you, you would have not stopped firing until you achieved your desired results."

Grim lets go of Edith and straightens up, staring back at Syd

Grim: "An' just what're those, you reckon, Gaydos?"

Edith Runekill is becoming increasingly drunk as the effects of finishing the flask all at once begin to hit her; she sways visibly as Grim lets go of her.

Grim catches hold of Edith again, better safe than sorry

Sydney Gaydos: "Achieving whatever you selfishly want. Like previously with your firing at the Lich's car or even more recently that drug bender of yours with Malkas. Do you think these actions through? Think of the consequences?"

Grim 's jaw sets

Edith Runekill: "You'd've needed a time machine to know how shooting the car woulda turned out!"

Grim: "You got a problem with me suddenly?"

Edith Runekill: "That's unfair to pin on Grim and you know it."

Pepper slides up between Sydney and Grim, facing Sydney. "Hey, c'mon."

Grim attempts to shoulder Pepper aside, still looking at Sydney

Edith Runekill: "Anyay, just 'cause somebody has a badge doesn't mean they're doing the right thing! Cops here are as bad as everyone else who's made it their business keeping things they way they are, from Pastor Jack on down!!!!"

Grim: "You sayin' I'm responsible for that shit? For Secomber?"

Edith Runekill begins singing drunkenly, remembering political meetings from Undergrad: "Arise, ye workers from your slumber! Arise, ye prisoners of want!"

Pepper stays put in front of Sydney. "Edith, please."

Sydney Gaydos doesn't try to move past Pepper, but does elect to ignore and talk over her. Also Edith too. "Did you think shooting anything, especially the car of the Lich, would result in a good outcome?!"

Edith Runekill: "Immobilizing the Lich woulda been a real good outcome and at the time it seemed like it played out that way!"

"He had to push his car out instead of flying away!"

"You're being real unfair, Syd."

Pepper: "He had that one coming. If he dug around in her head half as bad as he did mine, she should've shot it twice."

Pull up, gang, pull up.

Grim glowers at Sydney, fist clenched and physically trembling with restraint

Pepper flicks her eyes back at Grim then up at Sydney again.

Grim: "You be real clear, now, Gaydos."

Edith Runekill: "Y-yeah..."

Grim: "You sayin' I'm responsible for Secomber?"

Sydney Gaydos: "I'm not saying you are, " ohhh she dropped her speaking quirk, "but do you truly consider yourself not responsible at all? I don't."

Edith Runekill punches Sydney

Pepper looks at Edith. She doesn't need to dodge because there's an awful lot of Sydney and not much of Edith.

Grim is too surprised by what just happened to do anything except look at Edith like 0_0

Sydney Gaydos that makes her head snap a little, but it doesn't hurt. She turns to eye Edith. "Not an action I expected of you."

Pepper: "You had that one coming, too," she mumbles.

Edith Runekill: "Well I didn't expect you to have such a shocking lack of empathy for how it went down when we faced off against Tam and what finding out about Secomber was like!!! So THERE!!!"

Edith Runekill is DrunkMad now

Pepper just pats Edith's head with mage hand. settle down

Pepper pokes Sydney in the chest. "You said you were gonna talk to them about the car, you didn't have to really. Bring up all that other stuff."

Edith Runekill attempts to swat Pepper's mage hand away with a mage hand of her own, but she's a.) too drunk and angry to navigate this complex 3D spatial relationship and b.) mage hand doesn't work like that

Grim is kind of stunned by this entire interaction, tbh. She looks from Edith to Sydney and back, at a loss.

Sydney Gaydos: "Actions have consequences. Big ones, and small ones. " she looks between the group. "It is long past high time that gets learned." However she takes a step back, more somber now. "Capridi is in her room, it is obvious you need healing." Sydney would offer but you know, lol.

Pepper runs her fingers through her hair.

Grim stares through Sydney, then shakes her head and speaks blandly.

Edith Runekill: "Like, okay, whatever, yell at us about using the car without permission, or about the cops or whatever, and I'll argue. But-- but that-- but what you said..."

Grim: "Go fuck yourself, Gaydos."

Well.

Grim steps around Sydney to head on into the diner. She's over this confrontation.

Edith Runekill thinks that maybe getting healed actually is a good idea but she's too mad to admit it. She puts a hand on Grim's shoulder and follows her towards the diner.

Sydney Gaydos: "Edith, " she says as she passes by, "your car privileges are restricted until I decide otherwise. It is the same for Grim but I don't think it effects her as much."

Pepper starts muttering in Elvish. It could be a prayer. It could be cussing. The only two Elvish speakers are too far away and drunk to tell.

Grim finds a booth and doesn't even order food. That's how fucked up this is.

Edith Runekill looks over her shoulder, looking more annoyed at Syndey than she has in her entire life. "Good luck navigating our awful Plaguewrought highway system without me."

Pepper just gives Edith a weird look she figures she won't remember in the morning.

Edith Runekill Will Remember This

Edith Runekill: "Without me driving, I mean."

"I'll be there."

"Well, anyway."

"I'm going into the diner now."

Edith Runekill does so.

Grim glances up at Edith as she enters, hands flat on the table in front of her. She honestly doesn't know where she us right now, but Edith's here so it's probably okay.

Edith Runekill puts her hands on Grim's. "You're okay. It's okay. Nothing she said was right."

Edith Runekill: "Right as in factual or right as in moral."

Grim takes a breath and focuses on Edith, then exhales. She holds onto Edith's hands for dear life.

Grim: "...the fuck did I do, Runekill?"

Edith Runekill: "You didn't do anything, Grim. You made a tough call in probably the scariest fight of all our lives with Tam getting in our heads. And if you hadn't he would've just flown away right then and there."

Edith Runekill: "If Szass Tam thought, well, my car got busted, time to ravage a city known for its auto industry and hurt lots of people to fix it... that's an awful thing Tam did. It's him."

Grim shudders and grips Edith's fingers, then lowers her head to rest on the table

Grim: "...I'm too fuckin' drunk for this."

"What the fuck."

Edith Runekill: "Let's... let's order those burgers. And drink lots of water." She's ALSO too drunk for this but she's trying Very Hard to keep it together for Grim.

Grim grunts assent. After a moment she releases Edith's hands and folds her arms over her head without moving from the table

Edith Runekill orders food from a waitress who, thank Auril, does NOT recognize Edith. The waitress regards Edith and Grim with the mix of pity and impatience she reserves for the soon-to-be-hungover.

Grim takes a long breath and lets it out, cradling her head on the table for a few minutes before she pulls herself together enough to sit up and find her cigarette.

Grim fumbles a cigarette into her mouth and lights it, then slides the packet over to Edith. Her hands are trembling.

Edith Runekill lights a cigarette, too. For some mysterious reason she isn't keen to go to the car and get her own cigarettes back. Wonder why.

Grim rests her chin in her hand, fingers covering her mouth as she smokes.

Edith Runekill smokes too, watching Grim in silence.

Grim is a billion miles away, and it doesn't look like a good place to be

This is fine. Getting back to outside.

Sydney Gaydos doesn't say anything after that, and turns her head to face forward, starting into the darkness ahead.

Pepper: "Uuuuuugh Plaguewrought Land sucks!" she says to the open sky.

Sydney Gaydos: "That it does, Pepper, " Sydney comments quietly, still staring ahead. "Are you going to go join them inside?"

Pepper: "Huh? Oh." She looks back and forth. "I dunno. Not. Right now?"

Pepper: "Syd," she's quiet and sounds almost pleading. "What the hell?"

Sydney Gaydos takes a long breath in, and lets it out slowly before speaking. "Not my most tactical way of confronting things." She tilts her head towards Pepper. "Was it?"

Pepper: "Not the--oh my god, Syd," she buries her face in her hands. "That shit was like a month ago, it couldn't have waited one more night?" She sighs. "You know that was. Gods I don't even have a word for what happened just now." She ponders to the night sky.

Sydney Gaydos: "A miscalculation, " Sydney offered helpfully, ignoring the rest of that. She sighs again. "Go inside Pepper. Make sure Edith and Grim get healed. I'll be sleeping outside in the camper, the car, or wherever is convenient."

Pepper gives a supportive pat to Sydney's arm.

Pepper: "I'm not a fan of kicking someone while they're down, but that goes for you, too, okay? If you need to talk or. Not talk. Or whatever."

Sydney Gaydos 's body sags at the pat and Pepper's words. "I... thank you. Your offer means more to me than you will ever know..." she hesitates, but places a hand on her shoulder. "For now, I think the best place is inside for you is with the others. They... need the support, it seems."

Pepper: "Yeah. Okay." She pats Syd's hand, then heads off to the diner.

party chapter twelve - shalaska - pureCAMP

A/N - here’s another pathetic apology. it’s been over a month. i am a mess and a ball of stress, and i’m very sorry. i hope you like this<3

When Alaska woke up, the bed was empty. She could’ve lain there forever – would have if she hadn’t been alone – but her outstretched arms were grasping at nothing but cold pillows, and she wanted to be grasping at a warm body. She knew she’d fallen asleep encompassed in a warm body, one that was composed of familiar geometric shapes and sharp angles, but that body was gone now. Alaska blinked a few times and sat up, feeling groggy. She could hear voices. One sounded clear and high and female, the other low and rough and male. Part of her wanted to listen, but the other part begged her to lie back once more.

So she did, sinking back down into the pillow and closing her eyes as she listened to the voices grow louder and closer in proximity. The voices should have been instantly recognisable to her; she’d heard those two exact voices arguing and laughing many mornings when they were on tour, but fatigue made her mind foggy. All she could think about was the previous night.

Sharon had said that Alaska ‘didn’t deserve the bad publicity’ that was synonymous with her name. She’d said a lot of things, but that one stuck in her mind. It wasn’t like Alaska didn’t get bad publicity anyway, but she understood where Sharon was coming from. It was only recently that Alaska’s general public view had shifted from liked and loved to loved or hated, whereas Sharon had been a figure of strong controversy and adoration since her win, way back when. It must have been exhausting for her.

Almost absent-mindedly, Alaska reached for her phone to break the cardinal rule of reality TV superstardom. She was guilty of it, almost everyone she knew was guilty of it at some point, and even though it brought nothing but strife it was still an unshakeable urge. To know, to read, to acknowledge.

Anonymous: i know right… she used to be really sweet but then she let all the “fan favourite” fame get to her head and she’s a total snake now. I never understood why everyone loved her anyway, she was so fake on her season. And on as2 she clearly just wanted to keep detox and Roxxxy in the competition, and then she had a meltdown because she was about to be treated the way she treated everyone else. So then what does she do when everyone’s commenting snakes about her and her relevance is crashing down (because who cares about her when you could care about Katya)? She pulls out her last trick and does a show with sharon needles. Sad, really. Sad how she pretends they’re still super good friends and uses her to boost her fame and ego when she needs it. Besides the fact that sharon is a complete dick (look on reddit) it’s obvious that alaska only performs with her because it makes people excited and sharon seems to really like her… gross. Dont use another queen for your own good. Anyone else agree?

Honestly, that was mostly standard. Tons of people thought she was a snake for caring about her friends, and viciously defended Katya – the same Katya who would call her at midnight, giggling because a fly had landed on her baby hands and she’d managed to capture a few seconds of it on snapchat. Those were the deluded kind, and their words about being a snake or undeserving were ones she’d grown used to, and unaffected by.

Even so, the comment riled her up. She hated when fans assumed things about her life that they wouldn’t know. For one, she was friends with Katya. Secondly, how dare they assume she was just using Sharon? How dare they claim disgusting falsehoods from behind their keyboards, hidden warriors declaring that Alaska was using Sharon for her own benefit? They didn’t know that Alaska’s heart had been beating differently since they’d kissed, and how would they? They didn’t know Alaska had been falling hard for the past few months, and Sharon had fallen too, and how would they? They didn’t know that the overdose had shattered a gaping hole in her heart that bled with the worry that it would be too late for their love to survive, and how would they? How could they assume something so blatantly wrong? They knew nothing. Nothing at all.

“-irresponsible. But you already know, so I won’t keep going on. Morning, Lasky.”

Alaska sat up, forcing a smile onto her face to counteract the inevitable anger that came from reading comments about herself and the people she cared about. Michelle looked beautiful as always, her face creased with motherly concern, and Sharon’s pyjama top was undone all the way down, Alaska’s eyes instantly drawn to the sliver of exposed chest.

“I’m being lectured again about being irresponsible and taking drugs. It was an accident! But whatever.” Sharon informed her, and resumed her argument with Michelle.

The woman in question frowned. “How do you accidentally do drugs? You don’t just fall face-first into a pile of powders, Sharon.”

Sharon snorted. “No, you fall purse-first. I didn’t mean that it was an accident that I did coke. That was very much intentional.”

Even through the years of her sobriety, Alaska knew exactly what Sharon meant. It was never an accident. After so long, she still hadn’t forgotten. She never would. Memories like that just didn’t go away. It was seared into her mind forever, the way that the club lights would get brighter and the pounding of the music in her chest would spread to her head, her arms and fingertips, all through her body until she felt nothing and everything at the same time. The way she felt numb yet hyper-sensitive, seeing everything in vivid technicolour that made her ache in a painful but good way.

“She means how much she took.” Alaska said quietly. The memories flashing through her mind were scattered, frayed at the edges and missing chunks, and it made her feel sick. “It’s so stupidly easy to overdose, Michelle. You have no idea.”

Immediately, Sharon’s gaze lowered to her feet. The older queen knew exactly what Alaska was remembering, knew she was reflecting on their old club days.

“You just… you have a little and it’s fun, it feels good, it lowers your inhibitions, and then it wears off after like ten minutes. Ten minutes, that’s it. So you go get more, because you can’t feel it anymore and you want to feel it again. And then you keep doing it, because it lasts a little longer each time and you lose a little more sense every time but it still wears off. You forget that it builds up in your system and… and…”

Alaska couldn’t finish. The image of Sharon, with her dilated pupils and her quivering hands, leaning over the mattress to vomit on the carpet before falling back onto the bed, it was far too raw. Far too real. No matter what happened, no matter how she recovered or how many jokes would be made about it, that moment would never leave her. It had chilled her to the bone.

“You take too much. You overdose. You nearly die and ruin the tour and Christmas and any chance you had at redeeming your fucked-up reputation.” Sharon finished bitterly. “You worry your friends, you worry your mom, you worry anyone who bothered to care for you. It’s so easy, Michelle. It shouldn’t be, but it is.”

Michelle’s brow creased further, warmth and concern evident in her eyes. “Thank god you’re okay now. Why did you in the first place? I know you’re… partial to your illegal substances.”

Sharon bit her plumped lip and fidgeted. “Well, there is the fact that I like it, but… I don’t know. Is there ever a reason? I wanted to go out and party after stressing about the tour and arguments and all of that, and I happen to be a Ru Girl. People will give you anything when you’re a Ru Girl. Of course I said no the way a drag queen does, which sounds like ‘Sure!’ and the rest is drag. History. Her-story. Whatever. I’m alive, at least.”

Her attempt at lightening the mood, tossing in a few jokes to elicit a laugh, didn’t really work. Alaska smiled weakly, mainly out of tact, her emotions mirrored in Michelle’s face. The older woman looked as if she might tear up and hug the life out of Sharon in an instant.

“Right. Is the next rehab session soon?”

Sharon cut in before Alaska could drop a spiel that would keep Michelle happy. “Yeah, but I’m not going.”

“Oh shit,” Alaska muttered under her breath as Michelle’s face went from concerned to angered.

“Let me talk, first. Don’t look at me like that,” Sharon murmured. “I’ll go every now and then, but it’s not necessary. I know why I did it and what led me to that environment – I’m a fucking drag queen. Do I get urges? Yes, but I have Alaska by my side 24/7 to guilt me into being a good girl. I don’t need their goddamn group therapy where John the divorced father of three kids and heroin addict tells us he used to work in a bank. I can make this change on my own.”

Michelle didn’t look convinced, but she nodded. “If you think so. I’m gonna call or visit regularly, to check in. In the meantime, I know you’ve updated your social media, but I think you should speak to your friends who spent Christmas fretting about you.”

Alaska winced, knowing that the worries of their friends was one of Sharon’s biggest guilt-trippers, guaranteed to cause her mood to change. She’d already learnt how to tiptoe delicate around things that could trigger mood swings, but Michelle hadn’t been around to notice.

“Don’t fucking remind me.” Sharon grunted, but Alaska noticed that she reached for her phone from her pocket as Michelle walked out of the house. Her own phone began to buzz as Sharon typed.

At the same time that Sharon looked down at Alaska in the bed, Alaska shot her a sheepish smile. Her mind raced, but she really had no idea how else to relax.

Sharon vocalized Alaska’s thoughts. “You just told our friends that we’re currently in the same place, which can literally only be my home.”

Thankfully, the only undertones in her voice were ones of amusement. Sharon collapsed onto the bed next to her, a wide grin spreading onto her face as she watched Alaska try and figure out a response.

“Uh… I guess I did. Oops.” She managed.

Sharon cracked up. “You’re so stupid!” She laughed, shifting under the covers to where Alaska was still sat up. She pushed Alaska so she was also lying down and held both of her hands. “I wanna kiss your idiot face. You mind?”

Alaska chuckled, freeing her hands so she could tug Sharon closer. “My idiot face wants to be kissed.”

In an instant, Alaska completely forgot that she’d slipped up to their friends, because Sharon’s lips were connected with hers. The older queen’s teeth bit into Alaska’s bottom lip, sucking it gently as her hands roamed in her short dark curls. Her touch was soft but insistent, wantonly asking for more whilst keeping the boundaries between them. Flush against her, Sharon was cold from walking around the house, and she curled her body into Alaska’s for warmth and closeness as their tongues entered each other’s mouths. After a few seconds they pulled apart, needing air, and pressed their sweating foreheads against one another. When Alaska opened her eyes, she saw thick dark lashes and bright blue eyes watching her, the tiniest of smiles accompanying their loving gaze.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” She panted, breathless. She couldn’t control the smile that made its way onto her face as she took in Sharon’s expression.

Sharon smiled wider. “Looking at you like what?”

“Like you love me.”

The blonde kissed her again, languid and luxurious, as if she had all the time in the world. A quiet gasp escaped from Alaska’s lips, but she was in too much bliss to care.

“Because I do, pumpkin. Every moment I get to kiss you is every kiss I missed out on in four years of fucking up. That’s a lot of lost time to make up for.” Sharon breathed, her gaze never once leaving Alaska’s face. Her skin was flushed red, her lips slightly swollen from kissing, her hair mussed from Alaska’s hands – in short, she’d never looked so beautiful. Alaska’s heart beat faster at the sight of her.

“Four years is a lot of time to make up for.” Alaska repeated, arching her neck as Sharon began to plant kisses along the bottom of her jaw. “Four long years.”

Sharon started concentrating on a spot just underneath the curve of her jawline, sucking at the sensitive skin there. When she was done, she kissed the red mark she’d left.

“I can handle that.” Sharon took a moment to breathe and speak, before instantly getting back to work at Alaska’s jaw and neck. Her facial hair was growing through again, the short, dark stubble, and Alaska knew Sharon had a thing for it. Back when they had been together before, although she had never admitted it out loud, Alaska always noticed the slight increase in affection – mainly kisses on her jawline – when she had facial hair.

“We should do something today.” Sharon said suddenly, nipping at Alaska’s ear.

Alaska laughed at Sharon’s imitation of what she herself used to do when they originally dated. “Like what? Isn’t the next rehab session later today?”

A hint of teasing laced Alaska’s words. She knew there was no way in hell she was going to get Sharon to go another time – at least not in the same week. Just as she expected, Sharon let out a loud whine.

“It’s Thursday! We agreed that I wasn’t gonna go today, don’t make me go back to that suicide-inducing church. They’ll make me speak to the fucking priest, I’ll burst into flames. I mean something fun! Just us.” Sharon’s plea was almost childlike, her feverish touch and hungry lips making way for wide blue eyes and a hopeful expression.

Alaska hummed, deliberately dragging her decision out. “Hmm… all I remember is you saying you’d cook if I didn’t make you go… I don’t know, Noodles.”

“Please!” Sharon begged. “Come on, I never use proper manners. Indulge me.”

“I’m gonna need some more persuasion than that. Indulge me, what? I’m missing some manners there.” Alaska taunted further.

Sharon sighed. “Can you pass me my glasses? I can’t see a goddamn thing.”

Alaska bit back a comment about Sharon’s age, choosing the path to a quiet life. Shifting over, she reached for the table where the blonde’s glasses were sat and managed to hook them onto her finger, practically flinging them at Sharon’s face. Sharon wrinkled her nose, filling Alaska with the uncontrollable urge to kiss it, and put the glasses on.

“There we are.” She said, satisfied, and pulled herself up. She positioned her hands either side of Alaska’s head, moving so her body hovered over hers. Alaska was essentially pinned into place.

“You look prettier when I’m wearing glasses.” Sharon stated, lowering herself down.

Her lips kissed Alaska’s gently, teasing her. She knew the light touch wouldn’t be enough, and Alaska would crave more as she always did. When Alaska tried to lift her head to intensify the kiss, Sharon drew back ever so slightly, so the pressure stayed tantalisingly soft. The ball was in her court.

“Are you persuaded yet?” Sharon breathed, not giving Alaska the chance to respond before resuming her unbearably gentle kiss. Alaska found herself shaking her head.

“You’re not? Okay, what about this?”

Sharon withdrew suddenly, and Alaska moaned at the loss of her warmth above her. She waited desperately for something else, something more, allowing her to get her own way and enjoy her time with Sharon.

What she received instead was entirely unexpected; a pair of strong red hands scrabbling at her sides, her stomach, under her arms, tickling her. Alaska shrieked and flailed, uncontrollable laughter escaping from her as she writhed about. Sharon knew all of her weak spots – a four year relationship had ensured that – and she abused them all, delighting in the squeals of laughter she was causing and joining in with a few joyful chuckles of her own.

“FINE! FINE! FINE! WE CAN DO S-S-SOMETHING! YOU DON’T HA-HAVE TO GO!” Alaska giggled, practically yelling the words. “FREE ME! L-LET ME GO!”

Instantly upon her surrender, Sharon laughed and leaned down again to kiss her, this time properly. Her weight on top of Alaska – lighter due to her stay in hospital – was comforting, and when they pulled apart, Alaska grinned dumbly.

“Your glasses bumped my nose.” She complained, rubbing the little red mark they’d left. “Have you got any ideas of what you want to do today?”

Sharon smiled, pushing them up with her middle finger. “Your nose bumped my glasses. I actually don’t know. We could just see if there’s anything to do and make something out of the day.”

“I like that.”

Appearing in public with Sharon wasn’t new to Alaska, especially not when they were in drag. Appearing with public in Sharon out of drag happened a few times, generally during BOTS or with friends, never really alone. Appearing with Sharon out of drag, in public, in Pittsburgh, with the knowledge that there was some kind of relationship-but-not-relationship happening behind the scenes? Alaska didn’t really know how to act.

The city had practically become a hive for fans of strange, weird, underground drag to flock to, or just fans of Sharon, Alaska and the Haus of Haunt. The two didn’t dare to hold hands or come across as too affectionate, because they just never knew who was going to see them. Not all drag race fans were skinny white twinks obsessing over Jeffree Starr, and all it would take was a single sneaky picture from a fan of the two acting differently to spark even more online drama. Alaska wanted to avoid as much of the drama as possible, even if Sharon had already added to it,

Thankfully, their walk down the streets of Pittsburgh had been fairly uneventful. No one really gave them a second look, not caring or not knowing who they were. Alaska knew the city had a great sense of pride for the two of them, but in the daytime they weren’t really stars. The true reverence was at night, in full paint, under the sweltering lights of a club. As two fairly ordinary looking guys, minus a little bit of Botox, there was no point in staring. Unlike when they were in drag, there was really nothing to see.

“This feels so weird. We worked so hard to never be seen with each other.” Sharon mused. “I spent ages wanting to be with you and now it’s happened, it feels strange. Get what I mean?”

Alaska nodded. “Completely. I was just in denial, and now-”

“We’re here.” Sharon finished.

There was something symbolic about it, simply walking through the city. It was pleasant enough to walk around, enjoying the peace, but there was more to it. Every step felt like retracing an old memory – drunkenly stumbling down the road after a long show, kissing for the first time in the shelter of the bus stop when it rained, dates back when no one cared to learn their names. They’d come full circle, in a way. They were back where it had all started.

As they walked into the lesser-populated parts of the city, the amount of people thinned. The occasional group of kids skated past, but other than that, it was mostly empty. A few people walked past, but not enough for Alaska to feel too exposed. She slipped her hand into Sharon’s, smiling bashfully as Sharon gave hers a squeeze and didn’t object. For some reason, Alaska felt her heart swell. Sharon didn’t mind her showing a little bit of affection in public. Maybe things were changing.

Caught up in conversation, Alaska didn’t even notice the man walking in their direction until they collided, momentarily leaving Alaska dizzy. She opened her mouth, ready to apologise, and stopped when she saw Sharon’s expression.

The blonde looked shell-shocked, her lips parted slightly as she and the stranger stared each other down. Alaska tried to search for something familiar about him, but found nothing in his brown eyes, ruffled black hair, and lean build.

“Aaron. Good to see you.” He said, his voice expressionless.

Alaska frowned. Hardly anyone called Sharon Aaron. In fact, Alaska had only heard Michelle call her Aaron once, and that was in the hospital after just over half a decade of knowing her. Even Alaska herself usually called her Sharon. It was strange hearing her referred to as Aaron.

“You too, Mark.” Sharon replied, her voice even. Mark turned to Alaska, and Sharon quickly filled her in. “Alaska, this is Mark… my ex-fiancé. Mark, you know Alaska.”

Mark pursed his lips, his eyes cold. His gaze fell onto their entwined fingers. “I do know Alaska. You’ve reunited?”

Sharon coughed. “Let’s not do this, Mark. I really don’t want to do this.”

A sense of protectiveness welled up inside Alaska. Sharon’s voice was quiet, totally unlike herself. She seemed stripped of her confidence, something Alaska had been trying her best to preserve and build up since the overdose.

“Funny, I recognise those words from the night you told me I wasn’t good enough. He’ll get cold feet and leave you, the way he left me.”

Mark directed the last part towards Alaska, who glared at him. How dare he?

“You know it wasn’t like that.” Sharon sighed. “Things weren’t working. I was unhappy.”

Involuntarily, her grip on Alaska’s hand tightened. Alaska had had enough.

“Back the fuck up, Mark. It’s not your place to tell Sharon what makes her happy or criticise her for pursuing her own happiness. The last thing she needs right now is you stressing her out by being an asshole.” She spat.

Mark narrowed his eyes. “Oh? You care about her wellbeing? Again, funny how we broke up, you started talking again and then she took an overdose. I’m not saying it was intentional, but I’m saying that she’s always been good at lying.”

“That’s not true!” Sharon insisted, fiercely defending Alaska more than herself. “Don’t listen to him. Come on, let’s just get out of here.”

Mark scowled. “You’re good at brainwashing people, Aaron. I never knew you could do it to the same person twice. Thank god I got free from it.”

Without another word, Mark continued walking down the street, and Alaska tugged Sharon along, desperate to distract her from what had just happened. Sharon had told her back in the hotel room months ago that she’d had a fiancé she couldn’t bring herself to marry. No doubt Alaska had been mentioned, judging by Mark’s hostility towards the pair. Alaska recalled Sharon admitting that she couldn’t bring herself to say she loved him.

“Sharon?”

“Yeah?”

Alaska hesitated, but pushed on. “I love you.”

There was a long pause. Oh, shit, Alaska thought. I’ve gone and fucked it up now. This was going to be the part when Sharon couldn’t say it back, was just enjoying their hands-free, no stress thing they had going on. Perhaps Alaska had it twisted. But no, she was overreacting. Or was she? Sharon didn’t love her. But she did! She’d spent so long saying so. What if things had changed? Alaska was freaking out. The silence dragged on for what feel like hours, each second that ticked past stabbing into Alaska like a knife.

“I love you too.” Sharon responded. “I like saying that as long as I’m saying it to you.”

Alaska pulled the shorter queen into a whirlwind kiss, wrapping her arms around her and tilting her face upwards before letting her go and smiling.

“Shall we just go home? I can call a cab if you’re gonna find it hard to walk all the way back.”

Sharon brought Alaska’s hand to her lips and kissed it. “Whatever you want. I need to start thinking about you more.” Alaska’s insides felt warm, but something wasn’t right. A gust of cold wind on the back of her neck, a mosaic out of place in a beautiful picture. Everything was perfect but something just didn’t feel right. A feeling of foreboding began to encroach.

How does it make you feel when your partner is cold and distant? Or when theyre critical and prickly? Does it make you want to rip their clothes off, order in a vat of whipped cream and install a chandelier to swing from?

No? Well theres your problem according, at least, to Michele Weiner-Davis, the marriage-guidance counsellor whose Ted talk explaining her unconventional advice to warring couples has been viewed almost 3.5 million times online.

Her advice couldnt be simpler: shag. Do it even if you dont want to, do it especially if you dont want to and, most important of all, do it frequently whether you want to or not. To make it even clearer, shes borrowed one of the most famous advertising slogans of recent times: Just Do It. Your partner will be grateful, happier and therefore nicer, too, she explains from her clinic in Colorado. Its a win-win situation for both of you!

Weiner-Daviss self-confessed zealotry for marriage has its roots in the moment her mother blew her teenage world apart by announcing that her seemingly perfect marriage had been a sham for its 23-year duration. She was 16 at the time, and says she wasnt the only one who didnt recover from the bombshell: her mother never remarried and her two sons rarely speak to her.

The experience, says Weiner-Davis who states that her greatest achievement is her own 40-year marriage was transformative. She became a staunch believer in the fact that most divorces can be prevented; that the relief of a post-divorce life is temporary but the pain of divorce is permanent; and that if couples put enough work into staying together, they can fall back in love and live happily ever after.

Over the years, Weiner-Davis has honed her message. Shes now stripped it back to what she believes is the essence of a successful marriage. Gone is any therapeutic consideration of a couples history; of their emotional travails; of cause and consequence. Now she is entirely one-track minded: no matter how appalling the state of a marriage, she believes that kind, generous and frequent sex can bring it back from the teetering edge of collapse.

Her realisation was hard-won. For decades, I was in the trenches with warring couples, she says. But there were times when I was not too effective. I realised that there was a pattern to the times Id failed. There was always one spouse desperately hoping for more touch and because that was not happening, they were not investing themselves in the relationship in other ways.

Weiner-Davis stopped focussing on the couples difficulties from an emotional angle and addressed them exclusively as sexual problems. that when the so-called low-desire partner who is, she is at pains to emphasise, just as likely to be a man or a woman was encouraged to have sex they didnt particularly want, not only did they end up enjoying themselves but the high-desire partner became a much nicer person to be around.

I heard the same story from my clients so often that I did some research, she said, and found several different sex researchers who confirmed what I was finding: that for millions of people, they have to be physically stimulated before they feel desire.

Armed with this new theory, Weiner-Davis began encouraging her low-desire clients to be receptive to the sexual advances of their high-desire spouse, even if they werent feeling up for it. I found that unless there was something a lot more complicated going on, she insists, there were usually substantial relationship benefits to making love with your high-desire partner.

She rejects any suggestion that shes advocating a sexually subservient, anti-feminist, lie back and think of England approach. In fact, she says this is the embodiment of female empowerment.

Its not just telling women to spread their legs, she insists. This is not just about sex. For a high-desire spouse, sex isnt usually about the orgasm: its about someone wanting to feel that their partner desires and wants them. Im hoping that women will feel empowered that they are getting their own needs met through understanding their partner.

No still means no, she says. But it helps to not just say no. Instead, explain why you dont want to make love, suggest a later date and ask whether theres something you can do for your spouse right now instead. But heres the deal, she adds: There had better be a whole more Yess or Laters than Nos because if the Nos win, it leads to the problems I have been talking about.

Weiner-Davis points out that while its commonly accepted that couples should make all their important family decisions together, when it comes to sex, who ever has the lower sex drive makes a unilateral choice for them both. And, just to rub salt in the wound, she adds, the disenfranchised, high-desire one is expected to stay monogamous. No wonder, she says, they get cross.

I mention Weiner-Daviss theory to some female friends of mine. The overriding response is: Oh God, not another thing for my To Do list! Weiner-Davis is quick to condemn this response. Imagine if, when a woman said she wanted to have more intimate conversations or a date night, her husband said: Its just one more thing on my To Do list! For a high-desire spouse who experiences love through touch instead of quality time, its exactly the same impact. Ive had grown men crying in my office, crying about the sense of rejection they feel from their low-desire wives.

I then regale her with the experience of a friend whose husband had started his own business which quickly went catastrophically wrong. The family finances were in peril and he couldnt cope. His wife stepped in. Alongside her own job and while juggling the childcare, she worked late into the night for weeks to stabilise their security. During this time, she was scrupulous in not blaming her husband, either explicitly or implicitly.

With crisis narrowly averted, the stressed and sleep-deprived wife realised her husband was being snippy and sulky. When she asked what was wrong, he exclaimed: We havent had sex for weeks! Surely, I ask Weiner-Davis, this shows that not all demands for sex should be met with her Just Do It ethos.

Not at all, she says. This woman knew his ego needed to be protected and tried to do that by not blaming him for his mistakes. But it sounds like the bigger statement for him was: Am I still a man and do you still desire me?

But its the selfish, uncontrolled behaviour of a spoilt child, I insist. Weiner-Davis doesnt disagree. Women often say that they feel they have three children instead of two children and a husband, she admits. But the fact that this husband was telling his wife what he was feeling sad about is a really good sign: some people throw in the towel.

Is the deal explicit, I ask, does the low-desire one say: OK, well make love more often, but then you have to turn your iPhone off every once in a while so we can actually talk?

Yes and no, Weiner-Davis says. This isnt about keeping score. Relationships are not 50:50. Theyre 100:100. We have to take responsibility for doing everything that it takes to put the relationship on track even if youre not getting the response you want initially. Thats really hard.

Its about asking yourself, she says, when he or she speaks and acts badly, whether its because you have not had sex for four weeks. Is their anger actually about feeling hurt and rejected? If it is, the low-desire spouse needs to be more sexy even though they will not want to do this. And the other one needs to ask themselves when the last time the couple spent quality time together.

On the other hand, Weiner-Davis admits there is a limit. Id say that after several weeks, if nothing has changed in terms of reciprocity, then the couple do need to sit down and identify whats missing in their relationship for each of them and what they would like to have.

If you have a low sex drive try to adopt the Nike philosophy and Just Do It!, even if you feel neutral towards having sex at that moment.

If youre the one with a high sex drive, try to discover the way your partner wants to receive love. Its typically through quality time, words of affirmation, thoughtful, practical acts of caring and material gifts.

If you dont want sex at a particular moment, explain why and suggest another specific time – and ask whether you can do something else physical at that moment for your partner instead.

If you have a higher sex drive than your partner, try to empathise with them and accept they might never want wild or creative sex, but see the increased level of intercourse as a gift showing their love.

Remember theres no daily or weekly minimum to ensure a healthy sex life. As a couple you need to work out together what works for you.

Shitlist Reviews - Halloween 2018 - American Horror Story Season 3 + 4

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m Amateur Fan 2.27 and welcome to the Shitlist, where bad movies burn and welcome back to the Halloween reviews of 2018, today unfortunately is going to be the end of the AHS reviews due to the fact that I’ve not watched season 6-8 yet though I’m eager to continue it next year.

This week I’m going to dive into the third and fourth season of American Horror Story, Coven which is essentially based on witches living in the modern world and Freak show which is based on sideshow performers in the 1950s attempting to adapt in a world that doesn’t want them which is similar towards racism during that era as well now that I think of it.

We’ll start with Coven first which I think would be the strongest of the franchise, not only because of the history that the season is based on which is the Salem witch trials from the 16th century but also the setting which is more mystical based aside from historically based when it comes to Witchcraft. New Orleans, joking aside I think this season is another one of my favourites of the franchise among Asylum due to its involvement with the art of Magic and mixing it with reality.

for those who don’t know, Coven is set in the modern day era based on a group of witches who are adapting towards their powers in their group known as a coven, the season also introduces a series of mystical abilities aside from Witchcraft such as Necromancy, incantations and most notably Voodoo with the attendance of one of the season’s key characters.

The season is based on oppression aside from the witchcraft angle leading it towards racism, prejudice and mother/daughter relationships... I would like to mention is that this season is also based on real-life murderers such as the Axe-men of New Orleans in 1919 who’s responsible for killing 6 people and injuring more, Delphine LaLaurie, a socialite whose responsible for torturing and the deaths of multiple slaves that she owned, and finally Marie Laveau, a voodoo practitioner who was also known as the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.

The show also introduces 2 actresses who are well received when it comes to winning awards, Kathy Bates (Misery) and Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got to Do with It), which I’d to admit, improves the season greatly because not only of their appearance but of their relation towards their characters that they portray in the season.

The Story as I mentioned briefly is yet on witches but adapting to a new world as well as improving their own society, meaning that they face many problems from voodoo practitioners and witch-hunters which I will get into shortly, main perspective is similar to Asylum and Murder House but the main characters are different as we have leading ladies to act as the witch supreme, and a bunch of teenage girls whom seem to act more independent on their powers, one of which I greatly despise...

The witches are descendants from those who escaped the Salem Witches Trials from the 16th century that I mentioned before which leads them to reside in Miss Robichaux’s Academy along with the headmistress Cordelia Foxx who has an uneasy relationship with her mother, Fiona Good, the Coven’s Supreme, a witch born every generation who possesses the powers known as the Seven Wonders of Witchcraft.

The show also has some similarities towards other shows and movies relating to witchcraft, most notably the Craft from the 80s which is one of my favourite movies relating to witches. Aside from the witch-craft story arc, it also shows religion being strictly against magic mainly Christianity which is confusing seeing that in Christian mythology Jesus is seen using powers despite him being the son of God... but that rant is for another day.

Betrayal is seen mainly towards the show from several characters such as Fiona and Madison, one of the show’s characters. The season also represents itself as a teenage coming-of-age story about teenagers as well as they adapt from being young towards adulthood.

Some of the shows characters are pretty unique in their own way mainly relating to numerous plots in the show such mainly towards the rules of witchcraft and how the world of Voodoo works, mainly towards key characters as well, which is both saddening and dark at the same time, with that said I’m not going to go into spoiler territory about this season, mainly because it would be too baffling to explain in a written format as well as it being more visually explored.

With that said, let’s dive into the characters as well as some of the stories relating to the show to explore the mythology of Coven.

Cordelia Foxx is played by Sarah Paulson (as I said before most of the actors will be returning for following seasons, mainly Paulson, Peters, Bates and Rube), Her profession is the headmistress of the school which doesn’t mean much to her character, her authority doesn’t prove strong towards all the females under her protection mainly because of a few differences as well as her own arc.

Cordelia is in attempting to have a child with her husband/witch-hunter David which fails on nearly every level, including when it’s coming towards Voodoo, leaving her somehow empathic, especially when it comes down in towards the end of the show. The daughter to Fiona Good, she does have a lot of motivation when it’s down to rising against her better half for being both a student towards a teacher.

Fiona Good is known as a manipulator as well as a contriving monster when it comes to seeing her act out her plots, though she is played by Jessica Lange who does a very good job when it comes to playing leading villains such as Sister Jude in Asylum, her own arc is somehow different when it comes to the show as you too can sympathise with her when it comes over to her attempt to cure herself away from a fatal illness which I assume that has effected most of you in your lives... Cancer...

Yup, she is attempting to use everything from medical science, witchcraft potions and even begging to her rival Marie Laveau to assist her, you may feel sorry for her but secretly she’s more of a monster than anyone I’ve seen in the show who I’d admit does get her comeuppance at the end, her character as a mother is more conniving than any other villain in the show.

Her mother angle towards Cordelia is something different as she has changed greatly from a caring-mother figure towards a self-centred monster who only cares for her own gain but in different scenes in the show, she’s seen to be caring towards different characters, even in her last scene with her daughter, she’s remorseful for all the things she’s done to her.

Zoe Benson (played by Taissa Farminga) is the lead teenager of the Coven, before you ask my sudden change from the previous review on why I hated the character of Violet for being annoying and whining towards Taissa playing pretty much the same character in this season, it’s because her actions actually do something that improves that plot on a greater level, mainly it’s to inspire conflict between other characters as well as to improve the story remotely towards her own reputation.

Zoe’s ability is to cause brain haemorrhaging during sex towards her partner which caused her to be sent to the Academy, her character is more independent than the other teenage characters, mainly due to her expression on doing things that benefit her character and others. Her good heartedness could be her down fall but due to everything that she does in the show, in fact, I was actually rooting for her during the episodes because how much her character changed during the season. Though the same can’t be said for the next character....

Madison Montgomery (played by Emma Roberts, daughter to Eric Roberts) is possibly the most hated character of the season, despite what I’ve said about Fiona, Madison is way worse, and it makes it way worse that she’s an actress, her character is both despicable towards others due to her narcissism and arrogance of her fame.

I think this is more related to other actors and actresses whose career went on a downward spiral after drug issues as well as alcohol abuse which would be explained but in her case it’s because she’s a spoiled brat which made different to explore, aside from her constant whining for everything she wants, she’s also pretty much a monster whose willing to murder at this point, from when we first meet her you know that she’s trouble.

Her power is telekinesis which she used in killing a director for an advert she was auditioning for, which was gruesome as well as ridiculous, like Fiona she too gets her comeuppance especially when it comes to her wants rather than her needs. Every time she’s on the screen I’m at desperate attempt to either turn the TV or throw the remote at the TV...

Our next character is Misty Day (played by Lily Rabe) I have to admit, this character was enchanting and possibly the most positive through-out the season, mainly of her interest on removing negativity and being more focused on listening to music mainly Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks who she idolizes believing her to be the White Witch (who stars in the show as a cameo).

Her ability is the gift of resurgence which is the power to fully resurrect the dead, though her powers were found out during a preach of religion (take your pick) leading her to be burned alive, she does come back to life leading her to spend her time in the swamps. She’s the most kind of the show who I admire due to her despising to kill anything and looking for a place to act as a family.

Her powers were incredibly useful during the seasons run especially when it came to her powers and good-nature but this lead to an inevitable downfall when it came to her downfall following one of the trials of the Seven Wonders leading her body to literally turn to Ash,

Queenie (played by Gabourey Sidibe) is a young witch whose descended from Tituba, one of the first witches who survived the Salem Witch Trials, her ability is to transfer pain and suffering on herself to another person, yup she’s literally a living Voodoo doll, her character is somehow charming especially when it comes towards the other characters as she is more knowledgeable towards being challenged due to other characters being racist against her.

She does have some improvements in the season when it comes to expressing beliefs towards other characters, mainly towards her growing new abilities such as telekinesis and to appear in the afterlife despite being alive. I actually liked what they did with her character, as she is more of the voice of reason despite her naivety especially as she’s the most street-wise of the Coven

Nan (played by Jamie Brewer) is shown as the least socially-sophisticated of the group being more quick-thinking than the other girls, leading her to be more warming rather than the others, her ability is clairvoyance and telepathy leading her to find one of the villains in the show as well as having the ability to speak to people despite them having tongues.

She does have a dark side though as when she found out that her crush on the boy next door was killed by his mother, she literally forces the mother to violently drink bleach whilst using her telekinesis to throw Zoe away from her, Her downfall though was not satisfying to see when she was killed by Marie and Fiona leading her to live in the Afterlife, I would have loved to see her evolve when it comes to her powers as well.

Marie Laveau (played by Angela Bassett) is possibly one of the high-lights of the show, mainly because of her beliefs and her respect for Voodoo as well as the lore that follows, which is interesting to look at if you come to think of it, her story is more of a rivalry between 3 persons, the descendants of the Salem witches (mainly Fiona), the Witch-hunters and finally Delphine who murdered her lover many years before.

Her story again is based only on revenge towards Delphine who she poisons to live eternal which left a live-long conflict between the both of them, her powers are interesting as she states that for each power or incantation relating to voodoo, there reluctantly is a price, mainly a sacrifice or something belonging to those who need it which I can understand.

This is explored in one of the episodes as she sacrifices her new-born babe to become immortal towards one of the Voodoo Gods, leading her to continuously sacrifice one child for one year, though this cycle can be ended as well as all her voodoo enchantments permanently when she passes away via death or murder.

I’ve to admit, this character is possibly the strongest one of the season as you explore her pain and suffering and understand why she hates the witches and every other users of magic so much, you can feel the oppression towards her especially when it comes towards worshipping gods of voodoo.

Frances Conroy returns to the show as Myrtle Snow, the Head of the Witches Council who is one of the rivals of Fiona despite her loving Cordelia as a mother would, I thought her more as a mentor rather than just a standard character, especially one with such authority which is higher than Fiona, but when it comes to showing her authority among the girls of academy, she’s kind of weak in comparison to Fiona as if she’s more secondary rather than primary.

Though she is ruthless in her own way, her expression towards magic is believable in saying that safety is more better in numbers than it is alone which is why she was more attracted to Musty Day being the next supreme rather than any of the others.

Kyle played by Evan Peters.... I honestly didn’t know much about the character aside from him being literally a zombie that was brought back from the dead after a paternity stunt turned into a crime, which he was a victim off, though he was there in the show he didn’t do that much if I was entirely honest, I think he was only there due to conflict between Madison and Zoe.

The same goes to Spalding (played by Denis O’Hare) as he did have some secrets only that they would be become more prominent when time in the show progresses aside from it falling flat leading for the performance to be heavily underplayed, I would have loved to see him more active rather than just being there.

The second highlight of the show goes to Kathy Bates, who plays Delphine LaLaurie and wow does she steal the show, in short term to describe her character, think of Donald Trump acting like Buffalo Bill in a female body.... and I’ll let that thought sink into your nightmares. Joking aside Delphine is possibly the most racist character out there in live action, like a live-action Eric Cartman in a weird way, her character is possibly the most enjoyable as well in the season.

Her story is known to historical record by murdering her slaves as well as torture to use their blood as pharmaceutical remedies such as restoring her youth or making her look younger, though her conflict begins when she does kill Marie Laveau’s lover leading her to gain retaliation by poisoning her leading her to live immortal torment for her crimes.

But this is a pretty interesting look of things when she is reawakened in the modern world, as she is notably racist towards Queenie through verbal assaults leading a story of remorse when it comes to showing her how things have changed following the racist abolishment following Martin Luthor King and Roots (a story of Slave Trade which I would recommend if you are interested in history).

Her character is powerful following her returning to live back in her old ways leading to murder a show-woman as well as living in torment following the After-life, I would state on how she does that but I think it’s best to say that you have to watch the show, Kathy steals the show by force because of her performance, even when she placed a demented monster, you see a sadness following the reason why she does it.

As I said before, Coven is one of the strongest of the series, mainly towards magic and following different perspectives from characters, especially relating from the past to the present from those harbouring grudges that are life-bound. I highly recommend this one for those simple reasons.

Freak Show on the other hand is quite different, set in 1952 Florida and set on a Freak-show side-attraction after the great depression of America, the season mainly deals with discrimination following ableism, acceptance, exploitation, entertainment and medical oddities, I of which can relate to which will be for another day.

The season is set following a struggling freak show led by Elsa Mars who dreamt her way into show business by finding a home for her ‘monsters’ but dreams of her own fame, members of her group are Jimmy Darling aka the Lobster boy, born with syndactyly who dreams of a normal life, Elsa’s second in command and Jimmy’s mother Ethel, a bearded lady; her former partner, Dell Toledo, a strongman with a dark past; His three-breasted wife, Desiree Dupree.

Siamese conjoined twins Beth and Dot Tattler who are on the run from a murder and many others, their troubles are darkened when the involvement of a travelling conman Stanley poses as a Hollywood executive with his assistant Maggie Esmerelda posing as a fortune teller, who has the intention of murdering the freaks for profit; the spoils of wealthy, inbred Dandy Mott and doting mother Gloria who has an unhealthy obsession with freaks and finally the deranged deformed killer clown Twisty who targets both freaks and townsfolk alike,

Though this is possibly the most popular season the franchise, I doubt it to be one of my favourites even if it does contain some interesting scenes as well as imagery following the depression, discrimination over the freaks and the townsfolk as well as being welcome to a community that no-one wants. The medical history based on the freaks themselves is actually factual, explaining it to be either deformities following birth or tumours or disease that escalated from control following incidents.

Though I enjoy watching the season for the character’s interactions I also watch it because the medical history is more developed and explored when it’s outshined from the public view and expressed more independently towards medical science.

The characters are interesting as well as extended, possibly the most I’ve ever look at when it comes down to reviewing them character by character. Again as in Coven some of the characters are based by facts as well as medical science which will be explored at another time when I review something similar to this season.

Elsa Mars played by Jessica Lange is the owner or proprietor of the Cabinet of Curiosities who has a darkened history of her own, she was a dominatrix from Germany but after a Nazi experimentation following a young Arnold Arden (see last review for details) she was deformed by the legs and managed to acquire help from a carpenter who helped her with her problem leading her to movie to America following the War leaving the pain only to fall in love with Show business with dreams to become a singer only to fall sorry for the Freaks as she worked for a Carnival.

Unlike the other characters Jessica Lange has played in the previous, you can feel for her emotions as well as her pain when it comes to her story, especially with her loss and redemption of leaving what she had behind for another occupation, her lust for fame and fortune unfortunately got hidden away when she fell in love with the Freaks as well as the people she cared for the most, even though her dreams kept overseeing her.

She plays more of a sympathising hero in a weird turn of events especially when it comes to being a caring figure, I was actually rooting for her in this season because of her jealousy over others, mainly towards the reason why she became a manager, her freaks. Though she does go through the standard villain phase as normal people go through but when you think about it in a weird way, she’s doing this for the benefit of her own career as well as to motivate the other Freaks that she’s worked with.

Ethel Darling (played by Kathy Bates) is known as the bearded lady of the season as well as the mother of Jimmy but her story was bleaker than usual, back in the 1920s, she was a successful vaudeville star before she met and married Dell which eventually turned to be a bad choice learning that her career was turned over leading her to become pregnant with Jimmy and leaving Dell after he attempted to kill him as an infant. She came across Elsa in a drunk tank after fighting her alcohol addiction leading her to become loyal to Elsa but more so the Freaks.

Ethel was shown more compassionate but can become aggressive when she needs to be in the season, mainly towards Jimmy as he was growing up in Show business as well as being protective from the outside world as well as how cruel it can be. Like Elsa, she’s more of a sympathising character with her relationships with the Freaks especially with Dell who she takes an instant disliking for.

Kathy brings more to the table than her last role as she was more of a motherly figure to pretty much everyone she came across, which is something I thought was more needed to the series rather than have it straight out gory, I’ve high appraise to Kathy for giving one hell of a performance.

Bette and Dot Tattler played by Sarah Paulson are a set of conjoined twins and the neck, meaning that they have a pair of heads on their shoulders, Bette is the left side while Dot is the right leading them to have two alternate perspectives. Bette is more innocent and friendly than Dot leading her to dream of Hollywood glamour and movies, while Dot is more cynical and distrusts everyone leading her to remember their sheltered life as one following safety.

They were first found in their farmhouse injured with their dead mother who Bette stabbed for revenge of keeping them locked away for so many years, they were found by Elsa leading them to sanctuary at the Freak Show.

I’ve to admit, Sarah Paulson has done an incredible job when it comes to playing twins, especially in this case relating towards them being conjoined, I‘ve to admit I liked the idea towards this and the writers did not disappoint on how the twins were going to be played out, it’s more close to a Jekyll and Hyde scenario rather than twins but in a way it works.

I’ve to admit, Bette’s naivety got out of hand pretty quickly as well as Dot’s curiosity towards the outside world got interesting in a fast pace than I would have anticipated but aside from that, the twins are impressive and got through the story very well, aside from that they empathy that they received was pretty bland after all they did arrive there as fugitives but that stood aside with the Freaks and Jimmy being in the way... speaking of.

Jimmy Darling played by Evan Peters was another high-light of the show, being brought up by a single mother with a strong passion for the outside world including attempt to keep his deformities as standard, though that alone he does have outbursts against the outside world leading him to be more hateful in a sympathising way, possibly due to the fact that people feared his deformities.

Peters was interesting with this character as you could easily tell that even though he was young, he was one hell of a leader, being the power of the team with intentions of being protective of his group, even the Freaks themselves agree with him including Elsa despite her loyalty to them; Though his outbursts are pretty mundane to say the least especially when it came to several of the Freaks dying that he feels responsible for them being gone from his protection.

I’m just thankful that he and some over characters had a happy ending towards the fall of the season, despite him having some authority problems involving dismemberment.

Dell Toledo aka the Strongman was played by Michael Chiklis (most of you will remember him as Vic in The Shield) is obviously the father to Jimmy but the husband to Desiree. Dell is seen in the show as resentful, troubled and quick to anger when things don’t go his way which can be relatable to some people; though he’s often seen as corrupted by greed and wants.

He does show remorse for what he’s done though towards the end, especially not being there for Jimmy following a murder attempt, as well as for a series of murders that he committed, involving someone to do with the Freaks, I’ve to admit, this was impressive, though for the next character had different opinions on the matter at hand.

Desiree, played by Angela Bassett was interesting as a character as she witnessed one of the murders that her husband committed years ago, leading her to become aware of the husbands doing. Her role was more different than I expected when it came to Freak Show as she had more of an open personality towards the other Freaks, including Jimmy as she acted more open to him rather than she did with Dell.

Her past does eventually come back to her following a former lover but it’s different at its intent when it comes to realising who she really is and what she really wants, mainly to live her life as a Freak or to live her life as a normal person. Angela brings a great performance in this but I think it’s less of a performance as she did in Coven, she brings more care into the character but not as much she doesn’t use enough potential to make the characters aware on what they really want which is similar towards a midlife crisis.

Stanley played superbly by Denis O’Hare, you can tell that he was going for the sly main villain whose only motivation was greed, I was in a away rooting for the villain in this one because of how manipulative he was towards the key characters, destroying the reputation of the Cabinet of Curiosities as well as making his scams into items of profit featuring the freaks.

The idea behind this was interesting to look at as it looks like he’s been doing this for years especially when it comes to money, but his past does eventually come back to bite him in the ass when the Freaks start to figure out who he really is and what he wants, leading his uprising to be a heavy downfall, his performance was interesting to look at as he felt smug whilst doing so such as a regular con-man (personal experience again, another story).

Maggie Esmerelda however is the same but in a different stance as she does work alongside Stanley as a partner in crime but does fall victim in falling for the Freaks especially having a heavy guilty conscious which is something that has been done before but in way that Emma Roberts does it is completely different, you feel her sorrow for what she’s doing as well as making something different from faking a persona that she’s clearly not.

Her wants and needs are different when it comes to the Freaks such as falling for the Leader (Jimmy) when it comes to protecting them, her performance was incredible though she does have the occasional moment when it comes to collaborating with her partner, her other intentions come into play when it’s helping them out aside from murdering them for profiteering, though it’s taken in a whole new perspective, Emma has changed beautifully when it comes to the seasonal change.

Gloria Mott was played interestingly by Frances Conroy as she was had a motherly love towards her own son, even though it appears that she’s scared of him in that he’s going to do something dangerous, though you can tell that she is angered by her sons actions especially when it comes to some certain.... psychological problems.

I don’t think of much when it comes to this character, only the fact that in realistic terms is that she should have been harder on him when he was younger. I’m not surprised that she was rejected from her son’s life, especially when it came to his spoilt manner and aggressiveness towards others.

Dandy however... is something completely different when I think of psychological, most of you know that he does end up becoming a murderer but in that statement there is a difference when it comes to murderer as in Nature vs. Nurture, (I’ll explain that shortly), Dandy however seems to do it by mere madness rather than both topics.

Played incredibly by Finn Wittrock is obviously the psychopathic son of Gloria which you can tell from the result of inbreeding as well as antisocial behaviour from a previous childhood relating to killing animals and relying on sadism for entertainment, though his madness escalates when he meets one of the villains of the show Twisty leading him to develop a god complex which greatly bites him in the ass when it’s near the end of the season.

Finn plays Dandy impressively such as an adult acting as a child in most of his life via social isolation, lack of parental control and possible insanity via inbreeding, (which is historically proven), but when it comes to throwing outbursts, it becomes rather annoying yet humorous rather than scary or threatening, though his outbursts do rely on some attempt of fear, especially towards some people he ‘cares’ about.

Though he does obtain an unhealthy obsession when it comes towards the Freaks (or any freak in general) he does attempt to join them by stating that he is indeed one (which is a spoiler), his main obsession in Bette and Dot does become his greatest down fall which I believe started his psychosis to go out of hand especially when it comes to challenging someone like Jimmy Darling or Elsa Mars.

Freak Show is an interesting season to look at either to look at actors who were actual deformed and hired for the series, or for medical interests or just how the show has progressed, it’s still incredible as a season, but for I would rate it a solid 7 out of 10, it’s not as interesting as Coven or mind blowing as Asylum but it’s ok for a stand-alone season.

That concludes Season 3 and 4 of American Horror Story and unfortunately, that concludes the AHS series that I’ve got for this year, mainly because I need to watch the remain series including Season 8 which I’ve been told is an intriguing one to look at; despite the downfalls from the acting as well as the plot holes in the series; I still think it’s going strong, especially when it shows that some horrors are best explored while others are to remain hidden.
