The concept of sexual liberation is founded on the ideas and conditionings of society that restricts people's sexual expression, ideas that s3x is wrong and sinful and people who have it ought to be ashamed. Liberation in this sense is freeing oneself from those restrictions, the stigma, and shame we internalize and associate with their sexual expression.

For Kpop idols, they are forced to repress those feelings in order to maintain a pure innocent and almost childlike facade. Anything beyond this is met with instant slut shaming and often treated as a scandal for an idol to even say that they are dating as a result of this.

For instance, Park Jimin had to apologize to his audience before giving a performance because a bunch of ladies were going to hover over him as part of the performance.

I'm not a Pink cadet but those girls especially Lisa has been receiving some heavy backlash for her sexy dances and short shorts lately.

Kpop fans enjoy sexualizing idols but hate it when idols sexualize themselves.

You know, I planned on sort of transitioning away from kpop anyway. After the fuckery that was le sserafims debut, I decided to not follow any other debuts. So anyone who debuted after them doesn’t exist to me anyway. And since a lot of the groups I did like are either disbanded/inactive (gidle sucks now and mamamoo are all mostly solo so I’ll just listen to them individually), I hadn’t really been listening to new kpop for the last year.

But this shit with le sserrafim, and especially watching these delusional idiots try to defend a singing group who literally can barely hold a fucking note if it’s not perfectly engineered in a studio (especially when this is the THIRD TIME in less than a year this has happened) has literally killed any interest in kpop I had. I kept thinking that maybe things would get better, but it’s obviously the kpop industry just can’t handle being on a world stage. Korean values clash too much with international fans, the industry had gone completely image based (don’t need to know how to sing so like you’re skinny and pretty/hot), and the talent isn’t there at all.

And the labels suck so much now. SME is apparently so chaotic and shitty internally that employees are leaving in drones, as are their artists; yg literally debuted baby monster way too early because the idiot doesn’t know how to manage more than one group at a time (barely; how little did he promote black pink when they were his literal bread and butter), and keeps artists in the dungeon so you’ll only get a release once every five years anyway, and JYP is more focused on debuting gimmicky groups that he has no intentions of actually promoting (twice and itzy should just disband soon at this rate. has nmixx or whatever disband yet? What about day 6 and wtf is going on with vcha? Just gave up on them already? Also, he’s apparently going to debut another girl group? Why when you mismanage to the ones you got?), so there’s no real hope of seeing improvement there. And this whole situation with Hybe and Min Hee-Jin is proving that after just getting big enough to compete with the big three, Hybe is all about profit and doesn’t care at all about music and art and making it good. So no hope there. You can try to stan groups from smaller companies but look at what happened with fifty fifty. And that was because they blew up; if a group from a smaller company actually manages to get big, will the company be able to handle it? That’s been an issue before.

And that’s the thing: all this shit doesn’t have anything to do with the music. No one cares about making good music . It’s all about using music to create influencers so they can use them to get brand deals. Music doesn’t matter, the dancing is so bad that ppl are praising para-para arm waving as “good dancing,” every song is over produced and messy sounding, no one can sing, artists don’t eat because god forbid they be a normal size and then kpop fans hate on them (but don’t hate on them for not being able to sing; fucking priorities man lol), and nothing about this shit is fun anymore. Kpop had officially lost the fucking plot.

And I’m so disillusioned that I literally don’t want to hear anything about kpop anymore. I don’t want to listen to it. I don’t want to hear any news. I’m literally just done with it.

I’m still gonna listen to Solar’s upcoming single and anything else the mamamoo girls drop but even then idk. I might make a playlist for older kpop songs so I can revisit when I’m feeling nostalgia, but I’m honestly completely over kpop. Kill it because it needs to be put down.

This is a continuation of our discussion on my last post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me, I think I agree with all of it.

Not sure how I feel about the calling eachother out bit or near scolding of others in the comments. Please let's be welcoming and respectful of others's thoughts regardless of whether or not we agree with it. It's ok to hold diverse views. We do after all come from different backgrounds and have accumulated different experiences and I think it plays out in how we see things. Everyone's opinion is valid. Plus, I purple yall.

Now, do I think he is trying to pack on muscles........? Yes. He said so himself in Festa when he said he would rush to the mirror when he thought he had gained some muscle only to find out his biceps looks like a muscled kindergartner.

He also said lately he's into exercising and staying in shape which is true because for quite sometime now since early this year he has been talking about how "weak" he is in their Vlives and have even given instances of him not being able to do certain things- certian simple and easy tasks- which is typical of him I'd say. He's always talking about how "weak" he is especially around JK and juxtaposing that with "but JK is so strong" which I'm sorry but I have to smirk at right now cos it's such a typical gay pick me simp thing to do. We've all been there.

Do I think he's trying to be a muscle bunny or revert back to his body shape around debut? Absolutely not. But I do think he is straddling the line of toxic masculinity which is what the conversation is about.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to stay in shape or even enjoying work outs. Last night I ran downstairs because I had left my stew on the stove and now this morning I called renew my gym membership because I discovered running can be actually fun to do... No. No it's not. The gym instructor would have to come for me kicking and screaming.

RM have said even though JM looks skinny and fragile he is one of the strongest within the group. Besides, this is not the first time he's expressed interest in working out and building his body- hello, on Era?

I remember people complaining he looked too buffed up in that period on SNS and PJMs quickly jumping in to clear the searches for it. The choreo for On required agility and endurance and required the members- not just JM build up some definition in their muscles.

We've seen them go through all that. So it's not simply a matter of black and white staying in shape or doing it because he feels pressured to do so. Especially, when you consider that he's undertaken some pretty unhealthy measures in the past in attempts to lose weight or soften out his body post these muscle building, weight gaining periods and we've always chalked it up to his dance and how as a contemporary dancer he has to look a certain way or this or that to try to justify and make sense of it. Next you, know there are six chapters of break the silence of him talking about all the dark places he's been, the pressures to look his best for his fans or for his job and all these other painful stories he's shared with us over the years. And it's like, but why? Why do this to yourself?

I'll never forget the look he gave JK when JK was talking about wanting to build muscles in one of the interviews for the promotion of Be- I think I made a post on it. When JK noticed JMs disapproving glare he backtracked saying he would want to stay skinny after gaining all that muscles.

I mean if I'm to be honest, he was bound to crack at one point. The signs were there being surrounded by all these men who adhere to the traditional aesthetics of a masculine body- from Namjoon to Taehyung.

I wish y'all will steer the conversation in this direction and make it more about gender norms and expressions and breaking stereotypes and diversity in the body aesthetics of men.

Jimin is a man too. He just isn't what people traditionally will label masculine. Androgynous is more an apt word in my opinion. How many times have I said, I think Jungkook hetero passes because his body aesthetics is quintessentially what most associates with a masculine man?

Breaking gender barriers is not just about embracing feminine apparels- that teeters on cross dressing quite frankly and can be a bit performative and baity. Then you have to consider their culture in itself has an inherent pro gender diversity feel to it.

Now, let me explain my problem with the Klout ad campaign a little bit.

Do you see how Tae stands out? And I'm not saying this to fuel the "Tae was their fav" debacle. It's the 007 feel... I'll explain in a bit.

Most often, alcohol advertisers as well as most advertisements intended to sell to men often try to appeal to men's internalized ideals of masculinity or try to shape and define what a man or masculinity should look like. These ideals are so often toxic and detrimental to men and mostly women too.

Take a look at these ads for example. All I had to do was google search ads for men.

Real men drink milk and look at the image they present as real men. This blatantly implies if you don't look like this, if you are not a strong cliff climbing man with abs you are not a real man.

The second image is subtle. I call it the 007 slash Kingsmen-esque ideals of masculinity. It portrays men as sexy cool badass- works out but isn't too buff, filthy rich or middle class, wears Rolex, designer clothes, is kind but has a mean exterior and is every 13 year old wattpad girls's dream of a man. In fiction, you see this kind of masculinity in characters such as Edward cullens to Christian Grey. And a lot of ads for men alternate between these two ideals of masculinity.

Do you see how they modeled Taehyung in these ads after this kind of masctheme? Tae looks the same in almost all the ads. 007 sexy cool badass.

Now, I may not be a makeup beauty guru or MUA or whatever, but one thing I've picked up on especially when it comes to makeup for men- BTS and Kpop idols mostly is that, they soften out the harsh features on their faces and make them appear more androgynous or effeminate to suit the Kpop look and they ditch it entirely in different settings.

So for instance, Tae and Kookie's natural hawkish eyebrows tend to get softened around the arch and edges- don't know how the fuck they do that- but it appears less in your face intense most times when they wear make up in kpop related contents.

However, in certain other contents that lean towards a certain gender theme those features are emphasized. Not to say hawkish features are masculine features. Just saying in men, Kpop idols, my observation is they soften those features out with makeup or surgery.

Now, take a look at JM in these ads and look at everything from his posture, make up, hairstyle and brows. It's as if someone took an eraser to his androgynousity and erased his feminine side. Take a look at his photo above and compare it to the ads.

I am not a man. But I feel the gender look they went for, intended to appeal to men, tapped into a rather outdated stereotype of what man and masculinity should look like.

What is a man?

What should a man look like?

What aesthetics of masculinity is Jimin gravitating towards now? And I'm not talking clothes, I'm talking the expression of his gender. Time and again, he's talked about how looking a certain way made him uncomfortable in the past because he was constantly fighting his feminine side. He is androgynous. Sometimes he leans more into his feminine side. Other times he leans more into his masculine side but this is the only time he's leaning into his masculinity that makes me uncomfortable to watch because like I said it bothers on toxic masculinity.

He's said whoever he was, the version fighting to look masculine, that wasn't him. So forgive me if I worry whenever i see him suppressing his feminine side and acting like 'one of the boys.' Him staying in shape is not synonymous with him erasing a valid part of himself or suppressing it. He can stay in shape, celebrate his masculinity and still be FILTER.

What I'm saying is, this not a conversation about him exercising. This is a conversation about an ad erasing his feminine side and boxing him into a narrow expression of his gender and how that might be affecting his view of himself especially in the way he's been gravitating towards a certain masculine aesthetics and how that could be toxic.

Tae has said the same thing and BTS have agreed the JM as of 2019 was the real JM according to them.They said he was that way- suppressing his feminine side, because there weren't much songs and choreos that suited him and so he had had to bend himself to fit with the others.

And so when I see him leaning a certain way I tend to wonder if his exterior environment is playing a role in that. I hope you can understand that.

He is a contemporary dancer and strength and flexibility are prerequisites for his craft. The company go out of their way to incorporate contemporary dance in their choreos for JM's sake which helps solve that problem of him trying too hard to look a certain way.

May be I'm projecting. May be my little brother is effeminate and I've always recommended Jimin as a role for him to tell him not to try to look different just because other boys look different. May be I've seen him try one too many times to kill himself in the gym trying to build on muscles and getting frustrated with himself because he ends up looking like someone else. You can't gym the queerness away. Society will never let you be who you want to be so you might as well flip it the middle finger.

These boys are being shaped by their environment. I hate to say this but the environment they are in isn't exactly progressive and the longer they stay in there cut off from the outside world...

Flying out helps. Meeting different people and being exposed to different cultures and conversations on gender expression helps.

Anywho, these are just concerns I have. Will have them till I see that's not where he is headed towards. But let's not act like these ad campaigns do not and can not psychologically impact these boys especially as these advertisers are not looking to tap into their own definition of gender and masculinity but shape it and redefine it to appeal to the demographic they intend to market to.

I think this is just a grey area for me. Rather than try to change JM to look a certain way in order to sell alcohol. I think the ground breaking thing would be to have a man who looks like JM show us how someone like him would sell a can of drink. I think that would be revolutionary.

What happened?

3 days ago, the german radio host Matthias Mattuschik from the station Bayern3 spew racist remarks about BTS because of their MTV Unplugged cover of coldplay. He is a fanboy of coldplay and only wanted to introduce their song ‚Fix you‘ but somehow it was necessary to explain to his listeners why it was an utter insult that BTS had an MTV unplugged concert (he called it paradox, because it‘s a boyband) where they were allowed to cover his favorite song. Coldplay allowed the cover by the way and even commented on it positively.

As a german i know that to other people our language sounds quite agressive in general, but this is a whole different level. This isn‘t said in a jokingly way, it‘s pure hatred.

He called BTS a virus against which hopefully there will be a vaccine soon, that their cover of coldplay is blasphemy and that they are little pisser who should get a 20-year vacation in North Korea. Considering the rising violence against Asians all over the world because of Covid, his speech is extremely harmful and normalizes hate against Asians apart from the fact that it was racism in it’s purest form. Why the wish for a South Korean Group to have vacation in the North Korean dictatorship is inhumane and racist, i hopefully don‘t have to explain further. He even said, he can‘t be xenophobic, because he drives a korean brand car (which turned out to be japanese). The new ‚i can‘t be racist, i have a black friend‘.

This also hasn‘t been the first time, in 2018 he made an antisemetic comparison between smoker and jews for which he got a little attention, but no consequences.

Furthermore ARMY dug up a picture on his instagram from 2020 with the caption ‚ Is more evidence needed?!?,‘

A short note:

What makes this even more infuriating is that the radio station is regulated by public-law and german citizens are OBLIGATED to pay for it. We literally are forced to pay money to a radio station that broadcasts openly racist slurs! And no, it‘s not allowed. They have policies that explicitly say they are not allowed to discriminate, they have to support diversity and have to be politically and economically independant.

Do they give a fuck? Apparently not really.

Did Bayern3 answer the hashtags and the pressure?

They did, first came a short nonpology where they said that the show, which Matthias Matuschik is broadcasting, is known for his direct and honest opinions and that he could have worded it better. They are sorry if anyone felt insulted, which is excusing the feeling of the fans, but not the act in itself.

After Army answered with the hashtag ‚Racism is not an opinion‘ and various media coverage surfaced, they posted a second ‚apology‘, where they -again- said that they are distancing themselves from what was said and Matthias has always been an avid supporter of refugees so he is very far away from being a racist. (Supporting refugees doesn’t excuse you from saying racist things though.) Matthias stated that he is shocked from the reactions, that he is ‚sorry if people felt what he said was racist‘ and that his family is getting death threats. (which is in no way acceptable of course.) They would review what was said so it doesn‘t happen again.

This would have probably been the beginning of a conversation, if Matthias wouldn‘t have went to facebook after his second apology to like a supporting post that basically stated that the topic is way overhyped and in the 80s you were allowed to say your opinion without people getting butthurt (this is a short form.) News Coverage

Thankfully, we got a lot of support from I-ARMY and K-ARMY, otherwise we wouldn‘t have been able to trend the hashtags day and night and kept them in the top categories in germany and worldwide. We also got a lot of support from international media who called out the racism and put them into context in really amazing articles. We even got celebrities like halsey, max, lauv, steve aoki, JJ Ryan, DJ Swivel, Liam McEwan, Zara Larsson, MTV UK, Columbia Records and some more bring attention to the issue and show their support for BTS in the face of racism.

This support was probably the reason why we even got a second ‚apology‘, because guess what? German media ain‘t having it. Since the beginning of our protest, i think i saw 2 articles in total which actually called it racism, various newspapers and online magazines were downplaying it by talking about ‚insults‘ and concentrating on Matthias calling BTS pisser instead of quoting the actual racist remarks he made. We got no TV news whatsoever. So naturally, german locals looking at this protest think that Fans are going on a rampage because their favorite boygroup got insulted.

It has been maddening. The radio station and host have been trying to sit this whole thing out for days, in hope we lose energy over the weekend and it‘s draining to not be heard or taken seriously. For me it‘s still a priviledged perspective, because i don‘t have to bear consequences when this thing is over, one way or another. But for Asians in our country, also some of my friends, this horror in times of covid will continue. The lack of serious German Media coverage has been frustrating and embarrasing to say the least, but also shown again, that the topic gets overshadowed by prejudices against KPop, the fanbase and Asians as part of satirical fun (which it isn‘t).

Why is that?

This is my personal take and not a deep analysis, just my personal observations: Germany might be progressive in a lot of aspects, but they still have deeply ingrained every day racism against asians and they have a huge problem realizing and admitting to that. We don‘t have a lot of asian representation and there is a huge alieniation from asians for a lot of german 50+ (also less, but those are the ones in power mostly). Racism against Asians is not seen enough and people don‘t empathize, partly because they‘re white privileged people who don‘t have to live with certain stigma, partly because they simply don‘t care to educate themselves about minorities in their own country. This ignorance is widespread, if it doesn‘t happen in front of your doorstep, it‘s probably nonexistant. It‘s also not only reserved for Asians, january 2021 we had a talkshow where 5 white german people talked happily about what minorities such as Romani people think as insulting or racist. They did get a lot of backleash because obviously they talk about matters, without letting minorities be part of the discussion, but real consequences? Nope.

I doubt that this protest will get Matthias Matuschik fired (which it should if you are openly racist on a public platform), because the pressure is too low and the radio station has shown with their first statement that they thought it‘s rather funny than problematic. But i don’t know what‘s going to happen. Apart from being an ARMY, i am an adult who condemns racism in any way or form. Why german media chooses to overlook the essence of the debate and makes it a hystercial fanbase issue is beyond me.

I've been following kpop for about 6 yrs now and there have obviously been some things that don't make sense to me (being an international fan) in terms of the relationship idols have with their company, fans and the media.

I'm not a kfan or cfan and I respect and understand that this music industry is only obligated to cater to the cultural expectations of the central audience.

However, I do find these things annoying...

1. Korean entertainment companies often force and train their employees to portray an image of purity and innocence. They basically have to be as perfect as humanly possible.

-I hate this because I genuinely do not like fake ppl. It literally triggers me. I love the kpop industry for its creativity, boldness, and artistry. They are truly entertainers but I really wish the idols themselves had the freedom to speak their mind and live their lives. To feel however they want and express it in a way of their choosing. I don't want anyone to ever have to hide parts of themselves just to keep me entertained. I want them to be real and be themselves. Fall in love, go to the grocery store, etc without having to hide.

2. There is no difference between the professional lives and the personal ives of idols. Both are weighed as equals. If they make a mistake in their personal life, their entire career may be in jeopardy.

-this bothers me because I feel like there should be a boundary in how the media and fans interact with idols. I dont think as a fan I should be involved in the personal lives of celebrities. If a crime has been committed, then the police need to be involved and the person needs to be prosecuted. If the person is simply an asshole, then I still don't think its my business. Im here to be entertained not be their friend. I dont believe in public hearings where everyone shouts out allegations with no evidence and no trial. People get hurt this way and justice is rarely ever served.

This whole year has been nothing but Witch hunts and accusations. A lot of my faves have had to pay the price. All with the central problem being that idols are not allowed to be human. Being a kpop idol seems more like a way of life rather than a job and its fucked up frankly.

Retired Excuses

I know I said that was my last post but I never keep promises. I want to address many issues with the kpop community. I feel like this is a step for some people to realize the racist, toxic, gaslighting, and just complicit behaviors that go on. My last post was about educating idols, this post is going into the excuses that some of you fans make when it comes to idols when they Cultural Appropriate or do something Racist. I will also combat those excuses telling you why you're COMPLETELY WRONG. I have more discussion topics especially when it comes the anti Blackness in some fandoms. This post isn't to one of three people it to and for everyone that makes these types of excuses. I've even included black stans who excuses Idols.

Also, I'm not an Anti or a Hater. I don't hate kpop and I only hate a VERY FEW idols.

Let's get to it!

EXCUSE

This is the definition of an excuse.

Now that we know what that means that's exactly what some of you fans like to do with your idols. Your idol can do something so fucked up and there will still be fans making excuses and defending them. I mean look at Seungri...he still has a shooter when it's in their face. I'm not gonna talk about him too much bc his stans are too sensitive.

The excuses that we're giving and that these kpop companies are giving are bull shit. At least with SM, they don't even apologize or even say anything because they know and don't care. This brings me to the conclusion that SM as a company is racist and some of the idols there are possibly racist. SM is a company that treats their idols poorly, so why would they care about fans especially black fans when they know next comeback we'll buy it.

"Oh, they didn't know" this excuse is dumb especially when it's a picture of them in the act. For example when the photo of Hendery in that hat and the photo with Sowon. Those were both taken down so quickly. Why? Because they knew what they did was wrong. So if your fans need to stop thinking these grown-ass ADULTS are stupid. Korea is in the top rankings for academics. Though not every idol is from Korea they are still from either Japan or China which are also at the top for academics. "They're Korean why would they know things happening in America" here is also another excuse. The world is only connected by two things the internet and social media. After this summer during the BLM protests the whole world was watching the U.S and some are still doing it. Even if they aren't focused on the US they can do some research.  Also if they can pay attention to the different tik to dances and listen to music from the U.S they can know what goes on here.

"They didn't say the N-word that means ___ in Korean" Now this is a blurred excuse but it's not hard to hear the N-word. Like the Korean word for I is Ne-ga it's pronounced Ney-gah when you break down the word Korean vowels are different from English. N-word pronounced Nig- and the rest of the letters.  When you break the words down they sound completely different even when using the vowels. There is no way you can mistake those words. Therefore no excuse. 

"I'm black and I don't feel offended" You're a victim? You would rather defend these idols who hurt your people any don't know and care about you? That's sad. And for the white fans that use that as an example...your opinion and 2 cents are not valid. We don't care to hear it from you. What that does is Invalidate black stans who were hurt by this.

"They already apologized. Let it go" Just because an idol apologizes for that doesn't mean shit. That's like saying a murder asking the victim that they murdered for forgiveness. Just because they apologized doesn't mean we have to forgive them.

"It's the company/stylist's fault" Stop only blaming the stylist and company.

“Its appreciation not appropriation”  Flush it down the toilet. That sounds like the same excuses Jackson made. If Black stans are offended they're offended. Did your idol ask beforehand to use our culture?, No they just did it because they thought it was trendy and cute. Also, is that what yall have to say when it comes to some idols who nock black people? Because all I hear was crickets. If an idol wants to appreciate black people and black culture they can do three things.

1.) Something nice for Black fans and black fans only

2.) Speak on black issues, tell Something that they learned with black history, and or take the time to learn about our culture instead of STEALING it for their style.

3.) Donate to black lives matter(the bare minimum) (Also Army don't bring up the one Million dollar donation that's gonna be a post soon.)

4.) Do all three(above and beyond expectations)

But the sad part is they don't do it. Because they don't care. If they're actually in love with the culture, how come they barely know anything about it? Please answer this in the comments or reblog or DM me.

When it comes to boxing braids you think they are Bo Derek braids... no honey that was a white woman STEALING from black women. Bonnets to the same thing. I only seen one idol wear a bonnet and that's Jaebeom but that's still debatable. A durag is not a hat or a headdress you put on (KIM JONGIN I'M TALKING ABOUT YOU SIR THAT GOES FOR NCT AS WELL). I would appreciate it if idols started being more considerate especially when it comes to using black culture. So saying it's them Appreciating our culture is a No. You're making us look like the bad guys when all we want is to have something for ourselves. Idk what ya'll don't get Black people had to BUILD their own after slavery. Our invention that people use today that could've been a big industry was STOLEN. Then let's get into music how WHITE people would STEAL MUSIC because they had no original idea. Then when we FINALLY were comfortable not being excepted and having our own little safe space. That was destroyed by white people too. They had to steal everything from black people. That's why we're upset when idols use our culture and half of them don't know the meaning behind it and if they do know they don't care. They just care about the Shiney new trend or aesthetic.

“if that's appropriation then learning Korean is too” here are the definitions of Language and Culture. Because some of you need it.

Korean is a language...Language is universal like music.  Music is a language, you are using it to communicate and express your emotions as you do with Language. Culture is completely different. Sure language is in culture but culture isn't a language.

“They weren't trying to be offensive/you're being too sensitive” Who are you? Who are you to tell me how I should feel? Especially if your white you get no opinion and we black stans don't want your two cents. If anything some of ya'll got real sensitive at the Taehyung hates white people joke. They have a brain they have morals and they have free will to make decisions. So there is no fucking excuse.
