Hail The Saviour [Incomplete]
Another resident evil fic, modern au.
19/01/2020
The time, always the time. Running late like the white rabbit. Bright lights flashed through curtain-clad windows. It was still night. Leda sighed quietly, what was she awake for now? The discomfort of the bed she slept upon was enough to leave bruises no matter which way she positioned herself. Windows in a house-like prison. She was an experiment and had been from youth. Her dark brown eyes glanced over the room, having sworn the dream she had was real. The lights were simply just a part of that dream.
“Enough’s enough. You’re making a martyr out of me, Doctor.” A red-headed woman stood in front of a younger Leda, protecting her as if she were her mother. Young Leda trembled with fear, hiding behind the woman who tried to keep her safe - the woman ultimately failing. Red filled her field of vision, blood clinging to fiery hair. Leda shook the woman’s body, nothing happened. No reaction, the woman didn’t get up and she didn’t breathe. Leda sobbed before and as she was taken away.
“Mother Mary forgive me”, she murmured to herself something akin to a prayer, “this is war and I will take blood for the blood spilt before my eyes.” Her dark hair covered her face, pale and nearly translucent. Leda’s head was lowered as she stared upward through her eyebrows - watching as the figure of a woman approached the glass door of her room. This woman, one of the surviving Wesker children, gave a smile. It wasn’t a friendly smile, no. There was a malicious intent behind it yet it could fool damn near anyone - except for Leda. Clear blue, the colour of her eyes. She stared down Leda as if she was her prey.
“Good morning, Leda”, she began, “Have I interrupted your prayers?” “You know exactly when I start, so it’s planned”, Leda answered. Another smile, this time a humoured smile. Her teeth where somewhat visible. “Ah well, you should pick a better time to recite your prayers, right”, she asked the brunette. This garnered an annoyed expression from Leda. “Would if I could but it's a habit at this point. A decade of praying like this in a time of need”, Leda bluntly stated as she sat up in her bed. “Your mother taught you that, I assume”, the blonde asked. “Who else?”
Aris nodded, “I suppose I’ll leave you be for now”, she stated, “You’ll be needing all the rest you can get, Leda.” The lights flicked off the moment Aris left the room, leaving Leda in darkness. Leda grumbled to herself as she laid back down, pulling her heavy blanket over herself again. It wasn’t long before she found herself within another dream.
A blond man stood idly, watching two figures fighting something in the distance. He was dressed in all black, even his sunglasses. A grin had formed on his face, his gloved hands pressed together as he watched the fight from afar. The land was ablaze, dangerously bright hues of yellow, orange and red and the culprit was amused. “Don’t you see”, he asked, “I’m simply saving the world from humanity’s destructive nature.” He was talking to Leda. “And the answer to that is more violence”, she asked him. “Through destruction new life can thrive”, he answered, “Just as how wild fires rid the forest of useless, dried underbrush. Look at how easy they’ve been making it, every step they take is a mistake. Each direction leads them astray.” There was a sick sort of humour in his voice and for some reason, Leda found this more tolerable than Aris’ attempt of being human. She clung to her humanity like a moth was so easily drawn to bright lights. This man, though, completely disregarded it. He was playing god. An angry, merciless and unforgiving god. “You’ll be the one to survive this all”, he added, “but I know you won’t be the only one.” There was an annoyed tone to his voice, as if there being more than one survivor wasn’t something he wanted.
This time, the sun’s light began peaking through the curtains. It was real and it ended Leda’s dream. She sat up groggily and yawned. The man from her dream remained an image burned into her mind.
Aris was returning, Leda knew that. “Well, now it is morning”, she announced, “and I’ve brought someone along for you to meet.” “You talk to me like I’m a child”, Leda responded. “In comparison to me, you are still quite young. What, Twenty, Twenty-one? Anyways”, Aris stated, the person whom I’ve brought along is closer to your age so, I thought it might do you good to talk to him.”
“Socialization never hurt anyone”, Leda acknowledged, sighing as she got up. “Right and maybe you might learn something… since you always seem to want to be learning”, Aris pointed out. Leda narrowed her eyes briefly, still not trusting the other woman. She crossed her arms over her chest. “Get dressed”, Aris added, “He should be on his way soon.” Leda stared Aris down, “What’s wrong with my pyjamas”, she asked. “Just put on real clothes”, Aris answered. Leda rolled her eyes, “Fine.” After their exchange, Aris left the room and Leda began to change.
Leda was quick to change and it was only a few moments before this person Aris spoke of would arrive. He looked all too familiar, which he seemed pleased about. “You seem to know who I am already”, he stated, “I don’t believe Aris has told you much else aside from to expect a visitor, has she?” Leda shook her head, “No”, she answered softly. “Oh, well that’s to be expected of her”, he continued, “she does love setting off paranoia… and anticipation.”
He, Albert Wesker, had taken a mental note of Leda’s seemingly meek response and behaviour. “She told me that you happen to be rather sarcastic and snarky… maybe that’s reserved for her, though.” Leda noticed the similarities of the siblings’ behaviour, which was strange to her - considering her having been an only child. “But that’s not why I’m here”, he continued, “Come with me.”
Leda was all too eager to leave this cage of a room. “I can see that she’s kept you locked away like a bird. Aris does know that you’re leaving her watch, which she isn’t too happy about but she’ll have to get over it.”
There was something so strangely soothing about his voice, Leda couldn’t explain it. Maybe it was the assurance that she was finally getting out of here and that she’d be able make Aris pay for her wrongdoings. Leda wasn’t too sure, that’s what she knew so far. She followed after Albert, immediately looking down as the bright sunlight shone into her eyes. Ten years out of the sun had really done its damage, hadn’t it? Despite her recoil, Leda had truly missed it. That warm light.
Unlike Aris, Albert was able to put up a believable façade of caring although he didn’t. An umbrella was opened over Leda to shield away the sun’s harsh rays.
The ride to the Umbrella Corp labs was silent, but not nearly as silent as the way Aris tended to keep her estate. Leda’s eyes peered from the car window, she watched the scenery changing from rural to city. So much had changed over those ten years. She sank back against the car’s seat, hands folded together as they rested in her lap.
Inside, Albert began to explain to Leda what Uroboros was - leading Leda down a rabbit-hole of curiosity which seemed to please Albert as he willingly explained it further but not the whole of it. The explanation of Uroboros’ full purpose would have to wait until later. “And here, so long as you are supervised, you may go wherever you choose. Outside, even but you must return”, Albert told Leda. Leda nodded in agreement, this was certainly better than the confinement placed upon her by Aris.
30/06/2021
It had taken a full year for the serum to be completed. There had been trials, which showed where the serum needed work. There had been a nearly unhealthy obsession formed over Leda, which she found frightening yet she chose to not display her fear. The upside to having been brought here was that she had begun to look alive again and felt that as well but the downside, she was about to lose that feeling all over again. She agreed to it and there was no way she could turn back now.
There was a purposeful gentleness to the way Albert had taken Leda by the arm, “It’s ready, now. The tests have shown it’s more than perfectly ready at this stage”, he told her. What he hadn’t told her was that it had worked and he had tested it on himself and the other vial was waiting for Leda. There was a distinct feeling he had that told him it would work on her as well. Although outwardly he remained calm, his excitement for the completion of Uroboros was evident.
The time it took for Uroboros was actually quite slow. It wasn't exactly fast, the least it could take was twelve hours and the most was seventy-two. Like the average cold or flu, having it rush to activation would kill the afflicted immediately - rather, turn them into leech-like pustules. He still hadn’t explained to Leda the full of why Uroboros existed in the first place - not that the why mattered much to her anymore.
06/06/2020
Speculations, speculations. Where would they get anyone?
There had been speculations about what could possibly be going on between Albert and Leda - quiet speculations between those on the research team and security alike. They were so close.
His eyes always remained on Leda whenever she was in his line of sight. They thought that he’d possibly and finally felt something akin to love. Or maybe he did genuinely feel it, if that were somehow and magically possible - it sure as hell wasn’t medically possible. Yet.
Obsession. That’s what it was but, he could put on a show even though it was wrong to do so. He just couldn’t let anyone else close to Leda. He’s the one who got her - the one who saved her, the one who continued to save her from humanity and its cruelty. What had started out as a simple curiosity grew to an obsession - all thanks to Aris. Leda belonged to him. She belonged to him and there wasn’t anything that could be done to change that.
He especially adored that look she gave him - one that was of respect fuelled by something nothing short of innocence and adoration. It made him smile. All too often it made him smile and thats what fuelled the speculations of others around. It wasn’t easy to keep those speculations hidden, though.
10/06/2023
The tests had gone accordingly. Uroboros had successfully merged. It had taken a little over three years for it to do so but it was well worth it. Every minute spent sequencing the genetic makeups that Uroboros could successfully merge and form a symbiosis with, every second spent testing and formulating the serum was all worth it. It was a success.
Albert, wherever he had gone, had not been there to see just how successful his experiment was. It was claimed that he was killed, which should have been impossible considering all things.
Leda felt a tug, a pull. Something like a magnet pulling her down a path. It was strong, she could hear a deafening heartbeat and she knew immediately whose it was. Leda knew she had to find him and quickly do so.
Leda.
His voice. She heard him speak so clearly to her as she got ready for this expedition. She needed no-one else for it, not another soul. Where was she to go? She wasn’t quite sure, but she knew that once she found him, things could go back smoothly - accordingly with his plan. And she was quick to find where he was - trapped beneath volcanic stone.
“Hey”, a voice shouted out at her. Leda growled, turning her head as her attention had been grabbed rather quickly. “Kennedy”, she greeted with a grin, “Nice to finally meet you.” “Who the hell are you”, he asked, “what are you doing here?” “The cop instinct still runs strong in you”, she pointed out, “I’m here to pay my respects.” Leon glared at her, watching as Leda rose up from the ground. He staggered back, surprised by Leda’s height. There was no chance in hell that Leda was human anymore. “Leda”, he asked, “You died…” “Kidnapped”, she corrected, “And Albert saved me. He gave to me what Aris stripped away.” “Aris”, he asked, “Who?” “Don’t worry about it”, she warned him, “worry about me - what’s gonna happen to you if you stay in my way.”
Chills ran down Leon’s spine as those words left Leda’s lips with a hiss. He had drawn his gun and had it aimed at her head - but she, she had been his friend once upon a time. He furrowed his eyebrows, “He’s taken your life away from you”, Leon stated. “My life was taken the day Aris took my mother’s life and locked me in a cages like a bird”, she spat, “and you want me back in that rusted cage for the sake of ‘saving’ me.”
Leon felt his eyes stinging as they threatened to well in his eyes, “I really do want to save you”, he told her, “Please, you gotta let me!” “You would have never been able to”, she sighed, “no matter how hard you tried.” In her eyes, she had already been saved.
Leda loomed over Leon, “And there is nothing you can do now. Leave if you know what’s best for you.”
“He’s over there”, a woman’s voice called out. “Where?” “In front of the tall woman, Chris!” Leda grinned again, “Too late.” An inky blood-like substance dripped from a wound on Leda’s palm that already began its healing. “Leon! Leave, let us deal with her”, Chris called out. Both he and Clair had picked up on Leon’s distress. “To the master goes his hound”, Leda mocked.
Gunshots rang out in the air. They were all too focused on shooting Leda down all while a leech-like pustule wriggled its way into the volcanic stone. It was more than strong enough to do so while sparing all else of its strength to give to whatever of the Uroboros survived. Draining and leeching like a vampire who’s not tasted blood in centuries. The bullets struck Leda’s body - piercing her flesh. Blood oozed for a moment from those wounds yet she seemed unfazed.

stuck with you
➵ request: can i request fluff + au #2 + trope #1 "enemies to lovers" + prompt #4 & #19?? thank you 🥰
➵ lee donghyuck x reader | fluff, enemies to lovers au, high school au | 2,760 words | “take off your shirt.” + “can you shut up for just two seconds?”
➵ warnings: cursing and one second of suggestive stuff
➵ a/n: thank u for requesting! i really hope u like it :D i added timestamps to avoid confusion, so this turned out longer than expected oops. if u want a part 2, please let me know!
want to request? check this post out!
present time – thursday, 6:30 p.m.
you’re starting to wish time machines existed right about now. you’ll do just about anything to go back to two hours ago and avoid this mess.
you glance up at donghyuck, who’s put on his thinking cap apparently, and is trying to come up with a way to get you two the hell out of here. “do you have a hairpin? or a bobby pin?” he asks.
you shake your head, “donghyuck, that only works in movies.”
“y/n, i’m trying to come up with solutions here! or do you wanna live in this tiny janitor’s closet for the rest of your life?” he glares at you.
“if i did, i would’ve chosen someone else to share oxygen with. why would i choose you?” you glare back.
he rolls his eyes, indicating that that conversation is over. “whatever. try calling your friends again. someone must still be at school, right?”
you frown, “donghyuck, we had the student council meeting earlier, remember? that ended at six, and it’s almost six-thirty now. all the sports teams’ practice sessions must’ve ended, too. i’m telling you, it’s just us in school.” you shake a little as if trying to wake up from a crazy dream. no avail.
you’re stuck here–no, wait. someone locked you two in here. you’re going to have to trace back your steps to figure out who.
thursday, 4:00 p.m.
“the weekly student council meeting is in session. today, we’re going to discuss prom! i’ve put up a list on the bulletin board that says who’s going to do what. please take a look at it immediately.” you explained, gazing around the group of students in front of you.
you’re the president and donghyuck is the vice president. you two work together almost every day, you’re in the same classes, you have the same friends. but there’s one minor detail in your guys’ relationship: you two hate each other.
hate might be a bit too strong of a word, but it’s true. you and donghyuck, despite working together and being in the same class since third grade, have never gotten along. maybe it’s your guys’ competitiveness. maybe it’s your strong desire to one-up the other. but as long as you can recall, there hasn’t been a single time when he hasn’t made your blood boil.
anyway, you and donghyuck were in charge of planning your senior prom, and ensuring everything and everyone follows said plan.
while discussing the event, you realised you forgot to check with your school’s janitor if he’s free on the day of prom, or if he’s taking a holiday. either way was fine with you, as you were thinking of making everyone clean up after themselves. but just to be sure, you and donghyuck, unfortunately, decided to stop by the closet after the meeting had ended.
thursday, 6:05 p.m.
“i don’t think he’s here. it is after school hours, so i think he went home,” you said, peeping into the dark closet. it was pretty obvious he wasn’t there–the room couldn’t have been more than five feet by five feet. it’s a storage space, but the janitor keeps his bag here before starting work and picks it up right before leaving school.
“yeah, no shit, sherlock.” donghyuck reached around you to flip the light switch on. the lone bulb suspended from the ceiling blazed to life, setting the room alight.
then, suddenly, a figure pushed donghyuck into the confined space, which caused you to jerk inwards. it happened so fast, you barely had time to react, or identify the culprit. you heard keys jingling and fear danced around in your eyes.
donghyuck was still facing the door, while you were standing with your back against the wall. he tried his best to look out the little glass rectangle fitted in the door, but he turned around and shook his head in frustration.
“what the fuck just happened,” you said; it came out more as a statement, but anger resonated through your words.
“we, er, just got locked in here.” he deadpanned as if you couldn’t have figured.
you groaned and clenched your fists. “i’m gonna kill them. you didn’t happen to see their face, did you?”
he shook his head, “nope.”
“well, we know one thing. that person had the key–and only two people have the key to the closet. the janitor, who’s not even here, and the general office staff. but i’m sure they wouldn’t lock us in here.” you said.
donghyuck tilted his head, “okay, then, who...” he trailed off, allowing you to vocalise your theories.
“somebody must have stolen one of the two keys.” your brain’s gears started turning, trying to think of someone who would pull something like this.
“it could be the janitor’s keys. the closet was unlocked when we got here.” donghyuck reminded you.
“yeah...but he never leaves the closet unlocked. he’s very responsible, so it can’t be his set of keys. it’s probably the staff’s set,” you countered. “they barely pay any attention to non-admin matters. that person must’ve stolen their keys, unlocked the door after the janitor left, and waited for us to come here, before locking us in. jesus, i’m so angry. this is so fucking childish,” you groaned again.
donghyuck nodded in slight agreement, surprising you. he never agrees on anything you have to say, but he didn’t have much of a choice in that situation. plus, your theory made sense. “do you think this whole thing was renjun’s idea? he was the one who suggested we check with the janitor about prom night.”
your eyes widened in shock. “oh my god...wait, but it wasn’t renjun’s idea. it was mine, actually–he just reminded me to do so.” you slowly dropped down to the floor and held your head in your hands. you couldn’t believe what was going on. the entire situation seemed to just hit you.
you’re stuck in a small closet with lee donghyuck, your number one enemy.
present time – thursday, 6:40 p.m.
“none of them are picking up. donghyuck, what if they’re all in on this together? kind of like a senior prank–except we’re the ones getting pranked.” you say, panic rising in your voice. you’re standing now, leaning against the wall with your phone clutched tightly in your hand.
knowing your and donghyuck’s friends, you’re sure you’re going to be here all night. they’re quite a bunch. you and donghyuck have a common friend group, but your friends find your ongoing rivalry extremely annoying. it makes perfect sense if they locked you two in here.
donghyuck digests your words quickly. “no way. that’s insane! why the fuck would they do that?”
“well, do you have a better explanation? i’m sure you don’t, considering i’m the only one who’s been thinking of possible theories, while you’re here giving me the only suggestion you have–your stupid bobby pin idea,” you say, breathing heavily.
“can you shut up for just two seconds? always telling me what to do, disagreeing with me, arguing and fighting with me. we’re locked in here, and you think arguing like little kids is gonna get us out?” he shakes his head in disbelief. “god, and to think i had a crush on you last year.” he must not have meant to reveal that little secret, because his ears turn red instantly.
you gape at him, “what–what did you say?”
“look at you, getting a big head again–!”
“donghyuck.”
“i liked you! there, you happy?”
“i like–liked you too, idiot,” you say in a low voice.
then, he laughs–a melodious sound, emitting pure joy and rainbows and sunshine. “some type of rivals we are.”
you laugh with him now, finding the situation so pathetically sad that it was almost funny. laughable. something to reminisce from time to time.
“you...you still like me?” donghyuck asks in a small voice you’ve never heard before.
“take a guess.”
“no?”
you bite the inside of your cheek, “take another guess.”
he grins at you, leaning against one of the shelves–which was a bad move on his part. he accidentally knocks over a bottle of...detergent? who knows, but it ends up uncapped and half-empty once it lands on the floor. luckily it was plastic, so the bottle doesn’t break. unluckily, the other of the liquid splashes on you, soaking your entire shirt. your plain, white, shirt.
donghyuck freezes, “um...y/n, i’m sorry–”
you hold up a hand. the god of testing people’s patience must’ve signed you up for some competitive exam today. “save it.”
donghyuck looks around hastily, trying to find a clean rag. he produces a small yellow cloth from the back of one of the shelves and hands it to you, “here.”
you don’t even say thanks. you quickly take it from him, free your shirt from your jeans, and start wiping and drying it to the best of your ability. you manage to make the shirt as dry as possible, but it was detergent that spilt on you. it was soapy–it was not water.
you groan for the third time today and look at donghyuck, gritting your teeth. “i can’t possibly go out like this.”
he winces, feeling extremely apologetic. “take off your shirt and wear my hoodie instead. i have two layers on,” he suggests.
you give him a double-take, “what the fuck? no! why would i do that?” you exclaim.
“do you have any better ideas?”
you watch as he swiftly takes his hoodie off, revealing a loose tee clad on his body. you hate to admit how good he looks. he hands the item of clothing to you, and you tell him to turn around as you begrudgingly peel your shirt away. you take the rag once again, wiping off as much soapy liquid as you can, and pull the hoodie over your head.
it smells like him, you think. it smells like that expensive cologne he always seems to wear. you show no indication that you find his hoodie soft and comforting, and tell him you’re done. you roll the shirt, squeezing any remnants of detergent out, and stuff it in your bag.
he bites back the smile daring to form on his lips upon seeing you in his hoodie. “okay. now that that’s over, let’s try to get out of here, shall we?”
you nod. “i have our science teacher’s number. maybe i could ask her to help us? she’s always here late, marking papers and assignments.”
donghyuck snaps his fingers, “you’re right! yeah, give her a call.”
you scroll through your contacts till you find the name you’re looking for. you press the call button and set it to speaker mode so donghyuck can hear as well. she picks up after three rings, “hello?”
“hi, miss angela! it’s me, y/n. you see, um, donghyuck and i got locked in the janitor’s closet by someone, and we have no way to get out. are you still in school? if you are, is it possible for you to unlock the door from the outside?”
miss angela hums a little, as if in thought, “i just left, my dear. i could turn the car around if you’d like. i’m sure the office keeps an extra set.”
“yes! that would be great. thank you, miss angela. and we’re sorry for the inconvenience,” you nudge donghyuck with your elbow, who catches on immediately.
“yeah, we’re incredibly sorry. i’ll be sure to submit an extra report–!”
“save it, lee donghyuck. i’ll be there in five to ten minutes,” she hangs up with that.
you pocket your phone and look at donghyuck. “so.”
“so,” he repeats.
“are we going to act like we didn’t just confess to one another earlier?” you ask, biting your lip nervously.
“no, i don’t want to, um, act like we didn’t. i lied, y/n. i had a crush on you last year, yeah, but i never stopped liking you. i still like you. i don’t want to be your enemy anymore.” he nudges you.
you smile shyly, “i like you too, donghyuck.”
just then, you hear keys jingling–an all too familiar sound. you get excited, thinking you’re going to be met with the face of miss angela, but when the door bursts open, you see the smirking faces of renjun and jeno.
“about fucking time!” renjun pulls you and donghyuck outside.
“what?” donghyuck demands. “it was your idea to lock us in there? are you fucking kidding me?”
jeno grimaces, “i’m sorry, it was the only way you two would confess your feelings for each other and stop fighting for good.”
“i can think of plenty of ways–!”
“wait, y/n, are you wearing donghyuck’s hoodie? holy fuck...don’t tell me you guys did it.” renjun looks back and forth between you and donghyuck.
“what? no, of course not!” you retort.
“then why do you have his hoodie on, dear y/n?” jeno asks.
“that’s none of your damn business, lee jeno!” donghyuck looks ready to pounce on him, but you place a hand on his chest, stopping him. his gaze drops down to your hand and it softens.
“there was a little accident...but the good thing is that we’re out. hooray. now, everybody, go home. i have to call miss an–”
“y/n, thank goodness! what happened?” miss angela emerges into the scene, looking a little worried.
you briefly explain the evening’s events to her, without mentioning the confession part. she doesn’t need to know that. you tell her it was a silly prank. nothing more, nothing less.
she visibly sighs a breath of relief. “well, at least it wasn’t some stranger. jeno, renjun, i didn’t expect this from you two. but i’m glad you’re all okay.” she takes her leave, after ensuring you four are on your way home.
jeno and renjun go home via jeno’s car, and you and donghyuck, living only a couple of blocks away from school, decide to walk the journey.
“all this... just so we could stop fighting,” donghyuck laughs. you’re walking side by side, hands occasionally brushing against one another. it’s like something out of a cheesy rom-com. you wouldn’t have it any other way.
“it worked, didn’t it?” you say.
donghyuck stops on the pavement, turning his body to face you. he stretches out a hand to push a strand of hair behind your ear, making you bump his shoulder shyly. he smiles; he wouldn’t have it any other way either.
“i guess it did. but what do we do now?”
“what do you mean?” you raise an eyebrow.
“like, do i walk you home first? do i ask you on a date? god, with you, it’s just so much more...different. if it was someone else, i would’ve gone with my gut, but with you, i don’t wanna mess it up. you know?” donghyuck finally takes your hand in his, intertwining your fingers. you feel his warmth radiate, you feel his touch bringing you safety and comfort. something way more powerful than a hoodie.
“donghyuck, i’m new at this too. i’m just as scared as you are. and that’s okay, trust me. i’m glad it’s me and not anyone else.” you assure him.
you gather up whatever courage you have remaining, tip-toe, and brush your lips against his cheek. you stay there for a moment, just breathing him in. when you pull away, his cheeks are a dusty pink shade.
“do that again,” he tells you.
“no, i think i’m good.” you start walking again.
“y/n!” he whines.
“okay, on one condition.” he raises a brow, “ask me on a date.”
for a moment, he’s bewildered. then, he gets down on one fucking knee, not caring about anyone who might be watching, and clears his throat. “y/n, i like you so much. will you make me the happiest man alive, and go on a date with me this saturday?” he looks up at you expectantly.
you chuckle at his antics and give him a nod. “i would love to, lee donghyuck.”
he grins, all big and bright, and leaps up to envelop you in a hug. his arms go around your waist and yours circle his neck. he whispers in your hair, “i guess we owe renjun and jeno a thank you?”
“i am not going to thank them for locking us up in a closet. in fact, i’m gonna double their prom duties.” you feel his chest vibrate as he laughs at your comment.
however, you are thankful that it was lee donghyuck you got stuck with. so, forget the time machine. you wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“The Claret?” Raz’s voice went shrill, excitement echoing down the phone line. He started to shout something, the words too fast, too loud, too jumbled into one another for Jace to understand any of it. He took the phone away from his ear and just let his friend shout with all of the enthusiasm he could muster.
When the other side of the line went quiet he returned it to his ear, “I’m guessing you want to go?”
“Want to go? You’re joking, right? This is the opportunity of a lifetime! You know how many humans get invited to the Claret?”
“None?”
“None!” You have to go, darling, you just have to!”
Jace stretched his legs out, stretching the sore muscles. It wasn’t a lot, but it would do something to keep them from hurting the next day, “I don’t know. I hate vampires.”
“I don’t care if you hate vampires! You’re going and that’s final. You were invited so there’s nothing to be afraid of. Just be polite and you should be fine.”
“What if I say something I shouldn’t again?”
“Then they’ll let you know. Think before you speak. Don’t call them blood suckers or anything demeaning like that. Treat them like gentlemen. You’ll be fine.”
Jace laid his free arm over his eyes. He didn’t want to go. He tried to think of some excuse, some reason not to go. He thought of using his leg but that would never work. Raz would just tell him to sit at the club, no one’s asking him to dance.
“Is it okay if I just don’t want to? They give me the heeby jeebies.”
“No, darling it isn’t.” Raz sighed, “How about this? I drive over, you drink some liquid courage, we go together. We watch out for each other. I’ll get you home before I have to head over to work.”
“You really want to go, don’t you?”
“Be one of the few humans to go to the most exclusive vampire clubs in the Southwest? Of course!”
“You wouldn’t be able to brag to anyone. No one knows that the nonhumans even exist, that we even exist.”
“I can brag to you!” Raz chuckled before growing serious, “I am coming to get you, it will be fun. If it isn’t, if you hate it, we can always leave. Give me half an hour and I’ll be right there.”
“Yeah, okay.” Jace nodded, surrendering. He could never win against Raz.
“Love you.” Raz always said that at the end of a call, just in case something happened on the way over or before he can see you again. Still, it always put Jace on edge. He didn’t know how to respond to it. He wasn’t gay, he liked women, a lot, and it wasn’t like saying he loved Raz meant romantic love. It was a friendly love. He could never bring himself to say it though.
“Yeah, I know.” was all he could ever return. “Half an hour then.”
The phone clicked and Raz was gone. Jace hung up the phone and set it on the ground beside him. Half an hour. He didn’t even know what to wear to a club like this. Was it a dance club or was it more of a suit and tie affair? Could he go as he was? He had no idea what to wear so he gave up on trying, letting Raz pick something out for him when he got there.
Until then he decided to take his friend’s advice. He poured himself a small glass of the whiskey and nursed it, letting it settle his heart rate and nerves. He didn’t want to be drunk when he got there, so he decided to leave it at that one drink and to keep it alive for as long as he could. After about fifteen minutes he had to stop himself from pouring another.
Instead he called Terrin and left her a message, letting her know where Raz and he were going to be. He didn’t need to, but he wanted her to know where he was, just in case he didn’t make it back. From how Crin had reacted to him, there was a definite chance that he would talk someone else into trying to kill him. They would probably succeed too, relishing in his spilt blood.
He headed into the bathroom, looking himself over and getting himself to look as good as possible. He brushed his ashy brown hair, which was starting to get too long, almost covering his eyes in the front, and shaved the thick stubble from his jaw. Being disabled had really helped him grow lax about his appearance. He flossed and brushed his teeth too, not that he was planning on getting so close to one of those blood suckers close enough to smell his breath. He even thought about doing something to cover up the freckles on his pale skin, make himself look a bit older, but decided against it. He didn’t have anything to cover it up with except for his disguise kit, something he’d only had to use on a few jobs, lots of time in between.
Raz let himself in, shouting at Jace that he was there. He was handsome and Jace knew he would be looking for action that night. He couldn’t understand the man at all sometimes. Who would want to bed one of those disgusting vampires? There were so old, so violent, so blood crazy, Raz must have been an idiot to even think of sleeping with one.
Still, Jace was impressed by how he looked. His hair was brushed upward into little mountains, not gelled into horrible little spikes. He had shaved as well, only leaving blonde wisps in the abstract shape of a goatee. His shirt was tight, a black button up with shining blood red stripes, revealing his thinness and slightly muscular frame. The top two buttons were undone, releasing a few stray hairs.

pediatrics, AKA kids are really fucking great but they’re also vulnerable and they deserve the world and ahhh i love them (9/23/19 - 11/1/19)
coming out of family medicine, peds felt like a huge step back in time - i’d gone from seeing people who were, on average, aged 45-60 years old to seeing patients as young as newborn infants. communicating with patients to take a good history and physical changed from being relatively straightforward to feeling like i was playing a game with some of the younger kids. and of course - everything i did became ingrained with one main objective: don’t make the patient cry (spoiler alert: a lot of my patients cried... and it was okay).
my rotation was spilt into 4 weeks of outpatient clinic and 2 weeks of inpatient care at a hospital in the suburbs of Atlanta (so, close to home - which was nice! also a very welcome change from the prior 6 weeks that i’d spent in a small town in SE georgia for fam med). outpatient was definitely a lot of the same thing (colds, allergies, stomach bugs, etc), but i ended up enjoying it a lot more than i thought i would for 2 reasons - 1) my attendings, who were absolute characters, and 2) how diverse my patients were, whether it was age, race, socioeconomic background, or even their relationship with their parents.
inpatient, on the other hand, was a very different experience - it was my very first rotation in a hospital setting, so i finally got to experience the joys of morning rounds and writing SOAP notes and monitoring ins and outs and trying not to fuck up my assessment and plan during my presentations (another spoiler alert: i fucked up a few of my assessment and plans... and it was okay). my favorite thing about working in the inpatient unit was the fact that all of my attendings were female - they were a team of 7 doctors and they were so badass and good at what they did while also balancing it out with an almost-maternal care for their patients. they all had their different quirks (for example - one attending told me that something i included in my patient presentation was unnecessary even though a different attending i worked with the day before deemed that same thing ‘essential’).
while i didn’t really have profound patient interactions like i did on family medicine, there was still a lot about my rotation that was meaningful to me so i thought i’d end this post with a bullet list of some random thoughts:
i LOVED how inclusive my outpatient clinic was with respect to their lgbt patient population. some of our patients (or their parents) were lgbt and all of my attendings were so welcoming and non-judgmental with their dialogue and behavior. i feel like part of this was because of the geographic location of our clinic being close to atlanta but i just love seeing inclusivity in medicine!
BABIES FROM LIKE. TWO TO FIFTEEN MONTHS OLD WERE BY FAR MY FAVORITE PATIENTS. they were SO tiny and cute and there’s honestly nothing more exciting to me than making stupid faces at a sweet little baby and getting a smile in return. over time, doing a physical exam on them became a lot of fun because i got the hang of making it into a little game. my favorite thing would always be to check their reflexes because one of them involved stroking the baby’s palm to see if they’d grasp it in response! SO CUTE AHH
i am now entering a stage of life where i start to lose relatability with teenagers so i was a bit intimidated to do well-checks and sick visits for them, but i quickly learned that a little goes a long way. one of the pins i wear on my white coat is a uterus that says “come at me bro” made by planned parenthood and i was surprised at how many conversations that started with some of the teenage patients i saw! teens quickly became my second-favorite group of patients i saw
my favorite patient-parent interaction that i saw was with a 14 year old boy who had come for a well check - i was asking about his hobbies and he said he didn’t have any, but then his mom kept saying “come on, tell her the truth!” and i was like dying to know what this guy was hiding and before he could answer his mom turns to me and says “he knows how to sew! he sews patches onto his jackets all the time. i think it’s great, his sister doesn’t even know how to sew.” i just loved how this mom was so positive and affirmative towards her son’s sewing hobby and ofc i made sure to tell him that i can’t sew either lol
a lot of fake sounding diseases i learned in school are, in fact, real.... example: day 1 of inpatient peds i met a little one with a condition called kawasaki disease (y’all can read about it here)... a few days later we saw a different patient with necrotizing fasciitis (AKA flesh-eating bacteria infection). i was shook
i would say about 60% of peds is simply listening to parents and ultimately reassuring them that their kid is going to be okay, interspersed with showing them their growth charts and never forgetting to do a good ear exam
third year of med school has just been SO different. a lot of what i’m getting graded on is so performative (aka how we interact with our patients and the healthcare team) that i might as well be in acting school and i’m not really sure how i feel about that. i’m currently on ob/gyn and this feeling has amplified tenfold with the addition of surgeries to my schedule so i’ll keep y’all updated on my thoughts...
anyway, this rotation has made me super passionate about pediatrics and i’m definitely keeping it on my working list of possible specialties i’d like to go into! the opportunities are endless because i can always subspecialize, and i just love the patient population so much.

Nemesis
Archive Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/16979847
Word Count: 2040
Summary: Simon and Baz work at opposing coffee shops with a little more than your typical rivalry against each other. (POV Simon)
Carry On Countdown 2018 Day 19: Coffee Shop AU
“Oh will you stop teasing each other? Fucking hell.” The toothbrush nearly falls from my hand, head spinning to look at Penny leaning against the doorframe. Part of me resists claiming that I’m not ‘teasing’ him; I’d just told her through a frothy mouthful that I’d written his name as ‘Bass’ again today, and now she has the bollocks to tell me that we’re flirting?
“We’re not flirting, Penn,” I mumble, taking the brush out for a moment before jabbing it back into my mouth and scrubbing. I’m looking in the mirror when she responds, only seeing the back of her head, but by her gesture I can tell she’s got some sort of feeling here.
She snorts, raising her hands in the air. “You said flirting, not me.”
I roll my eyes, scrubbing my mouth for a solid 15 more seconds before spitting out a mouthful of soft green foam and rinsing my mouth, turning to Penny and pointing a finger at her. “We are not flirting. He’s practically my nemesis; why the hell would I flirt with my nemesis?”
A loud snort comes from her throat. “I think nemesis is a tad of an over exaggeration. You work at opposing shops, it isn’t like he killed your first born.”
Twisting the cap off the mouthwash, I roll my eyes and let out a “not yet” under my breath. That deserves me a solid pinch on the arm.
And like that, she disappears into her room and leaves me here to sulk, staring into my eyes through the bathroom mirror, cheeks full of burning rinse. I gargle, then spit, eyes locked down on the drain as I flick the water back on and brush it over my lips, then splash it in a wave over my face. Once, twice, then grab a towel and pat myself dry.
I don’t know why I agreed to go to this party knowing that he’ll be there.
All six feet (and maybe a few odd inches), perfect hair, flawless cheekbones and eyebrows and bloody fucking eyes and pretty much the rest of his god awful face of him.
All his fucking sharp dressing, condescending, “I’m-Better-Than-You-Because-I-Shop-Local”, leather wearing, sports car driving, posh accent-having of him.
Basilton fucking Pitch is gonna waltz right up to the party, probably his fucking henchmen at his sides because that’s what they are; he’s practically a supervillain. If you caught Basilton Pitch in a dark room with a spotlight in a turned around armchair, I can nearly guarantee that it’d spin around with him stroking a white, longhaired cat and you’d be like “Well fuck, this is where he belongs”. Even the name sounds like he’s got a master plan to destroy you (or maybe just steal your fucking customers by guiltripping them into thinking that by going chain for anything is killing local businesses). I need tips, too, and not all of us have rich fathers at home who can pay for what benefits cover instead of shitty corporate options.
Standing in front of my mirror, I scan over my sad excuse for a party outfit. I feel like a fucking fool whenever I’m next to him. It’s probably because he wears ridiculous button downs that don’t even have breast pockets somehow while I stand next to him in a 1970s nike tee that I found in a thrift shop dollar bin.
I grab a hoodie as I step out of the bathroom, throwing it on while patting around for my wallet and phone.
It feels like Penny’s practically dragging me there. Honestly, I have no idea whose party this is; shit, all I know is that Baz is gonna be there. Even when I asked Penn, she was vague about every part of it. “Oh, the host’s someone I met in a baseline Business Writing course.” When I’d asked what the hell ‘business writing’ even entails, I ended up bored and tuned her out after hearing ‘grant writing’ and ‘sponsorship proposals’.
You’d think that a student who takes ‘Business Writing’ wouldn’t be so popular, but here we are, a crowded one bedroom, one bath flat ten minutes from campus filled with the reek of spilt beer and hot from people’s continuous breathing.
It takes me nearly five minutes to actually get to the alcohol, and once I get there, I just grab a beer and start chugging.
Add a few shots, maybe one more beer, then definitely another shot or two and I’m completely smashed, eating half a pizza slice in one bite as I sway to the music blasting on the speaker by my ankle. I think it’s Whitney Houston, or Kesha. I can’t remember.
And there he fucking is, across the room with his head leaned back against the wall all coolly. His hair’s knotted up in some bun, and his eyes are shut. You’d probably mistake him as sleeping upright, somehow in full fucking control of his body (honestly, wouldn’t put it past him), but instead he’s got a slight nodding to the music going. He’s got a drink in hand, mostly finished.
I don’t realize my feet have been taking me to him until I’m staring close enough that I can count the eyebrows on his forehead, then he snaps his eyes open to me. Immediately, his lips pull down into a snarl and his gaze narrows in on me. “Snow.”
My jaw hangs open as I squint at him and slur a “Basilton”, trying not to lean forward and topple myself over. My feet steady on the floor, a little too far apart for a normal pose, but I guess I could be preparing for a physical brawl.
He sticks his nose up at me, slowly raising his cup to his lips and sipping with unfair grace. As he pulls away, his lip’s shiny and dripping a tad. Clearly he's fucking pissed and didn’t catch the last drop . My first thought is to lick it up, but then I trickly try to snap away from it.
I want to ask myself why I'd want to lick that up, but that’s a loaded question and I don't think I can even think in “real” sentences right now.
“Who invited you?” I half taunt, raising my eyebrows to him. I’m trying to be intimidating, but it’s failing miserably. In return, he’s just making a deeply offended face and retorts back.
“It’s an open party; I had a class with Megan. And Dev fancies her.” His head tilts slowly to the side as he talks, eyes resting boldly on mine. He rarely seems to break eye contact, making me squirm under his intense gaze.
I snort, raising my eyebrows to him in a very Baz-manner to mock him. “Good thing you’ve got classes; can’t stay making shit lattes all your days.”
He just laughs back; shortly, all in my face (granted, we’re practically in breathing room). “At least I have a future beyond barista tips, Snow.”
“Funny, you talk all up about your fuckin… free… range… beans… then look at you, eh? Economics major, dickwad.”
“I’m no fucking capitalist,” he spits, sneering down at me. I think I’ve leaned closer, because I can see the close details of the recently shaved smoothness of his chin. “You work low wages for a large company without good benefits, you’re fucking bold.”
“I’ve got benefits! Loads!” I call out, waving my arms to the side. My beer sloshes in my hand, spilling a bit onto the carpet. I disregard it, feet stumbling forward. “I’ve got plenty of customers too, since they can read our fucking menu.”
He gasps this time. Genuinely, outright gasps in the meanest way I’ve ever heard anybody fucking gasp, staring at me and looking borderline hurt. “My cursive is exquisite, you uncultured heathen.”
I smile with my entire face, wrinkling my nose up at him. “I don’t scare away my customers though, mister big fuckin cranium! And see! I can speak in big fucking words, arsehole.”
Now he looks more confused than anything, squinting at me as his jaw hangs open and eyebrows knit together. He blinks, squinting further. “You… are quite possibly one of the most pea-brained people I’ve ever encountered,” he laughs square into my face. I think our noses are touching. “Do you think about the words as they leave your mouth? It’d be a goddamn miracle if they even went through any critical thinking process!”
“I’m fucking loveable,” I hit back, head swaying a bit as I talk (or maybe just tilting? Leaning? What the fuck is happening?) “Everyone thinks I’m a ball of fucking love, bitch.”
“You’re more than insufferable, that’s what you are,” he breathes into me.
Then, what feels like out of nowhere (or perhaps it isn't), I’m pushing him against the wall. His mouth’s against mine, and he tastes like the poorly mixed drinks he’s probably been downing all night. Vodka, spiced rum, sugary juices and lemon lime fizzy. I don’t think the taste matters much, though. I don’t think anything really matters much, frankly, because he’s currently spilling the rest of his drink down my back as he wraps his arms around my neck and hauls me closer. I couldn’t care less. I’m on my tiptoes, snogging the life out of him in the middle of this party (I want to take him home and see how he's look below me). He’s leaning down, kissing me back like I’m worth all the air in his lungs (seriously, I need him in my bed now.)
Seems like he’s got the same thought on his mind because the hand on my back keeps tugging my tee, taking fistfuls and just holding me towards him, not letting me go (I might not fully know what I’m doing, but I’m pretty sure it’s not a mistake).
It isn’t until Penny finds us, tugging my shoulder away from Baz and starting to pull me back from him. He lets out a whine, eyes wide as I’m dragged off and Penny shoves herself between us. “You are trashed,” she accuses, poking a finger at my chest before swivelling to Baz. “You are trashed too.” She glances between us then huffs. “Give me your phone.”
“Fuck you, Bunce, I was in the middle of something” Baz mumbles, dragging his phone out and slapping into her palm. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever met anybody with the balls to say that to her. Fuck it, I was that something was in the middle of, but she just looks like she has some sort of feeling (I don’t really know, she’s complicated and usually she says a lot of words that I don’t entirely get and the musics really loud and god I need to pee). While I'm struggling to figure out the situation with my lips not attached to Baz's, Penn types something into the phone and shoves it back into his hands.
“Dial his number in the morning. If you dare fucking ghost him, I'll show up to your flat with a knife and I'll make a handbag out of your skin,” she says flatly, grabbing me by my wrist and dragging me out as I’m complaining loudly. She doesn’t stop dragging me until we’re back to the flat.
After probably the best piss of my life, I find her waiting in the hall with her arms crossed, looking awfully pleased with herself.
I groan, rubbing my face as I practically stagger in place, giggling to the spinning motion of the room. “I wasn’t making a mistake, Penn,” I mumble, rubbing my face as my shoulder leans against the wall (it’s an awfully tight hallway).
“I know, Si,” she says, tutting as she opens my bedroom door for me. “Just get some sleep; you’re going to have to actually use your brain tomorrow and figure wherever the fuck that was..”
“I was snogging,” I mumble. “That's all.”
“With Baz?”
I shrug, smiling at the memory of his lips against mine. Penn just scoffs behind (beside?) me.
“You're gonna have to talk to him, Si.”
I groan again, this time much louder, hitting the pillow and nuzzling into it immediately. “Mmmm I hate that.”
“I know, I know. Goodnight, Simon.”
“Mmmhmm nighty nighttime, Penny.”

I Love You, You Pay My Rent: Chapter Twenty
First Chapter (Prologue)
Previous Chapter (Chapter 19)
Nico had been living with Will for almost three months. The two of them had been through a lot, but at least now Nico could honestly say he didn't think Will was a murderer anymore. He was just worried that someone in his family might be. And the person they might have murdered was Will's mum. And that Will was only in a relationship with him as some sort of twisted plot of revenge.
It was all Jason's fault.
One suggestion was all it took and now Nico couldn't get the idea out of his head. Why else would Will be with Nico? What did he see in him? Somehow it made much more sense for Will to be dating him out of some twisted revenge plot that because he liked him. Will had once called him cute and funny. That was clearly a lie.
"Nico are you thinking again?" Will asked.
Will had maybe, possibly noticed his downward spiral towards almost complete paranoia. At first he'd been dismissive of Nico's concerns (which at first had manifested in needing constant reassurance that Will wasn't mad at him), sometimes gently dismissive and sometimes rolling his eyes and telling Nico he was being silly or that he had an active imagination.
As the days wore on Will had become more concerned.
"You want to go out?"
Nico murmured something vague and unintelligible in response and left it up to Will to decide whether it was agreement or dissent.
Will sighed.
"Nico please can you just look at me?"
Nico didn't want to because, whether maliciously or not, Will's eyes were hypnotising and he'd only have to look at Nico all sincere and beautiful and Nico would fold and give in and they'd end up doing something and Nico would probably have a good time and forget all about the fact his boyfriend might be some kind of super spy sent to destroy him and his family. Which on one hand would probably be good for him.
But on the other, what if that's what Will wanted?
He heard Will sigh and walk off. Nico tried to ignore the spike of guilt that stabbed him in the chest. He drew his knees up to his chest and forced himself to stay still, to not run after Will and give Will what he wanted -
"Will wait!"
Nico was weak and Will had him completely under his thumb.
Will turned and he was so hopeful, his whole being lit up with a tentative light as he watched Nico, waiting like he'd been asked.
Nico didn't really know what he wanted, what he was going to suggest and eventually Will took pity on him.
"We could go watch a movie?"
It was actually not a bad suggestion. It was something to do, which would satisfy Will, without requiring too much interaction Nico didn't know if he could fake, which satisfied him.
"Movie sounds good," Nico said.
A weight seemed to come off Will's shoulders and he seemed about ten pounds lighter, the corners of his mouth turning up in a delighted smile, he quickly squashed.
"I'll be ready in ten minutes," he said softly, clearly trying to be carefully neutral. He'd been treating Nico like a scared wounded animal for the past few days, trying not to push Nico too hard or too far, giving him space and generally being supportive and kind.
And yet no matter what Will did, Nico still couldn't bring himself to trust him.
Nico was a terrible person.
They walked to the nearest cinema, side by side. The grey clouds had finally broken, allowing sunlight to peek through, but the pale warmth didn't seem as strong as it should be. There was still a pressure in the air and Nico thought they were due another storm sometime soon.
Will was quiet as they walked, and thoughtful. Nico didn't try to make conversation, and left Will to his thoughts whatever they might be. Worry or glee at Nico's downward mood? Was he concerned, or happy that his plan was working out perfectly.
In the theatre lobby, Will left Nico staring at the playlist and went to buy popcorn. Nico must have zoned out staring at the billings because the next he knew Will was beside him again
"Are you okay?" Will asked. "Not dizzy or anything? I don't want to have to call another ambulance for you."
His tone was light, teasing but there was something beneath it, and Nico realised Will was actually concerned. Irrationally concerned maybe, but concerned.
"Fine," Nico said.
Will's answering smile was pale to his normal smiles, like the reflection of who he used to be.
Nico felt another one of those stabs of guilt.
"What are we watching?" Will asked.
Nico had forgotten he was supposed to be choosing the film.
"Uh Bridesmaids," Nico said, picking the first movie his eyes fell upon.
Will raised an eyebrow but didn't comment. Nico just shrugged.
If he'd expected Bridesmaids to be a nice, cheerful rom com that was light enough that he could pretend to be invested in the plot for an hour or so, so that Will would be happy, while really thinking over and over, round and round, he was mistaken. Bridesmaids, it turned out, was a horror movie.
Will particularly seemed oddly affected by it and Nico suddenly felt the distance between them sharper than ever when Will jumped, jogging the stranger on the other side of him rather than Nico. Jealously warred with guilt then and Nico took his hand, lacing their fingers.
Jason and his stupid accusations could go to hell. He was screwing up a perfectly good relationship over nothing.
Probably nothing. Because there was a chance however slim that -
Stop it Nico.
The next time Will jumped it was Nico who ended up being elbowed, and the popcorn spilt on the floor. Nico smirked at him and Will looked sheepish.
Nico had seen worse films. The shapeshifter was creepy, as was the idea it was among them and no one knew where or what it was plotting or who it would manipulate next, but it didn't really scare him. It was scaring Will and Nico didn't really understand why since Will too had seen worse and most of the time had actually come out better than Nico. Reyna had been cautious of Will as a match for Nico since, on the surface of it, they had so little in common, up until she'd watched a horror with the two of them and it had been Nico that was grabbing at Will, Nico who wouldn't sleep unless Will was next to him.
It was the first time Nico had really understood that somehow Will had been equated with safety for him, and he'd fallen a little further.
They got to about twenty minutes from the end (Nico judged) and were well into the climax when Will suddenly stood and told Nico he'd meet him afterwards. Nico watched him go stunned, and then his brain kicked in and he stood and followed.
It took him a full five minutes to find Will and a traitorous voice in his head wondered if Will was making a call to have him assassinated. Then he found him outside, sitting on the pavement in a patch of sunlight.
"Smart," Nico said. "Shadows can't get you in the sun, it's their biggest weakness."
Will closed his eyes and gave a rueful smile.
"You didn't have to leave," he said.
"I wasn't overly invested. The cheerleader one was going to get killed, the snooty businesswoman was the shifter and the one about to go off to collage was going to survive at the end."
"You see it before?" Will asked.
"No but it was really cliche and predictable. We've seen worse."
Will nodded.
"I know," he said. "I know. I don't know what got me. The special effects weren't all that good -"
"I'm pretty sure at one point they were using ketchup for blood."
WiIl laughed shakily.
"Real blood doesn't look a thing like that," Will agreed. "The consistency was all wrong." Nico was about to mock him for having a good knowledge of blood when he remembered Will quite frequently ended up covered in the stuff in his role as a medic to a scary gang so he shut his mouth and decided not to ruin his new hour long streak of acting normal around Will by starting another fight about Will's extra curricular activities.
"Exactly," Nico said. "So you're fine? You know no shapeshifter is going to come and kill you in the middle of the night."
"In theory," Will said.
He was actually trembling Nico realised.
"Will come on," Nico said, trying for the gentle sincerity Will was so good at when it suited him, and failing almost entirely.
"It was just a movie. A bad movie."
"I know," Will said again but he wasn't looking at Nico.
Nico stood, pulled Will up with him.
"Forget about it," Nico suggested. "Let's go do something else."
His something else was unspecified and he and Will ended up walking around a bit, searching for the something else. Will didn't feel like eating, Nico didn't want to go into the arcade because he thought the lights and sounds would make him want to stab something and eventually they just sat found a bench and sat in silence. Nico wasn't entirely sure if it was a comfortable silence or an awkward one. He alternated between trying to shut off the part of his brain that was busy formulating a list of accusations against Will, and watching Will watching the sky, eyes tracing the patterns the sunlight made as it filtered through the edges of the gathering clouds.
Will remembered he had to go into library, and Nico was left to walk home alone. Jason had tried to call him several times since the meeting between their fathers. Nico had picked up exactly once to ensure that, to the best of Jason's knowledge Will was currently completely off his father's radar, or at least so near to the bottom of his list of priorities he may as well not be listed at all. Jason had affirmed his father seemed preoccupied with Thalia, the theft and the associated drama and had lost interest in Will.
Every time he'd called since Nico had ignored him. He tried again as Nico wandered back to the very empty apartment, and Nico again swiped the call away. Then the thought of Will, so vulnerable and scared after a film that really shouldn’t have bothered him, had him tapping to call back.
Jason was the answer, Nico realised. Jason had started it and maybe Jason could stop it.
The relief in Jason's voice when he answered the call was so strong that Nico almost felt bad for ignoring him. Almost.
"What if Will really is just using me?" he said interrupting Jason's greeting.
Jason was quiet for a moment.
"Do you believe he is?"
"No," Nico said firmly.
"I didn't," he added.
"Well I don't think I did," he clarified.
He ran his free hand through his hair.
"This is all your fault Jason. I would never have thought it but now you've got me wondering. He knew about Percy. He keeps being nice but it's like he knows exactly how to control me, we were just watching a film and he freaked and he wouldn't normally freak but he did and I went after him and it was so manipulative. Except maybe it wasn't. How am I supposed to know?"
Jason was quiet.
"Jason!" Nico snapped. "Help me. This is your doing."
"I don't know what to say," Jason said. "I'm sorry I brought it up at all, I was trying to look into it on my own and find out either way because I knew you'd descend into paranoia."
"Well I’m there. I’m very much there. And if I don't stop with my descent into paranoia I'm going to screw up and decide Will is some kind of master criminal. So this is your responsibility. Fix it."
Nico had reached the apartment.
"Still with Will?" Octavian asked as they passed in the lobby.
Nico ignored him, tried not to think about Octavian as he climbed the stairs. Octavian had always told him to stay away. Nico had always thought Octavian was a lying, reprobate but maybe his warnings meant something after all.
"Nico are you listening?"
"What?" Nico snapped, stress bleeding into his tone. "No, look Jason I'll talk to you later alright?"
It was a lie.
When Will came back from class, tired and stressed, and Nico refused to have dinner Nico saw the first signs of frustration in Will, his patience and sincere give-Nico-space-and-let-him-figure-whatever-this-is-out slipping. There was a flicker of annoyance in his expression and he seemed about to say something, but then he just gave up and swapped to resigned, shoulders slumping.
"Alright," he said and left Nico.
Nico felt another stab of guilt and he ignored it.
Will ran out of patience after a fraught week. He probably would have lasted longer if he didn't have so much work. Or perhaps the work had been a distraction and without it to return to he would have lost it with Nico much quicker.
"I don't get it," he finally snapped. "It's my mom who's dead. If anything I should be the one sulking."
"So sulk!" Nico had responded waspishly. It was the wrong thing to say, Nico knew it, but it came out along with an all too familiar rush of anger.
He saw Will draw back and something splintered between the two of them.
We're not broken, just bent Pink had sung on the first track of Will's heart CD. Pink didn't know anything.
Nico had stopped bothering to use his own room when it occurred to him that Will's was bigger, his bathroom was nicer, the mattress was better. Plus Will's room had Will in it. The first few times he'd simply been talking with Will on the bed and at some passed out, curled next to him. Will had obviously caught onto the charade pretty quickly, faster than Nico himself had as it turned out, but he had kept it up with a slight smile.
It felt weird sleeping in his own bed again. It made his heart twist when he heard Will cry out in his sleep, the sound muffled by the wall between them. Nico lay still, paralysed. He wanted more than anything to calm Will's nightmares, but he couldn't make himself move.
Will was taking over the living room again, textbooks piled around him and bags under his eyes. He didn't greet Nico when Nico came in to try and watch TV, didn't even seem to register him.
"Hey," Nico said.
Will didn't respond.
"Make sure you drink something," Nico told him in a small voice.
Will didn't answer and Nico left, wondering how they'd managed to fall back into being little more than strangers and why he couldn't just go and apologise, walk over to Will and beg his forgiveness. Kiss and make up.
Percy was probably one of the least observant people in the world when it came to relationships. Nico had had a crush on him for years and he'd never even noticed. But when he came round one day to invite in inverted commas Nico to go suit shopping for the wedding he winced.
"It's like an ice age hit," he said. "Please tell me you're not still hung up on the idea that Will's manipulating you?"
Nico shrugged.
"Jason meant well but he was clearly wrong. He never saw the two of you together. Will likes you Nico. He couldn't fake the way he looked at you."
Nico really, really wanted to believe him.
Will didn't ask where he was when he got home. Nico supposed that was fair enough, he seldom asked where Will went when he went out these days, and he hadn't commented on the blood staining Will's sleeves when he'd come home at 3am. Octavian had and Nico had just let the comment wash over him, too tired to form a response.
"You lasted longer than the last roomate," Octavian commented as Nico walked away.
The second time Will cracked Nico had been texting Hazel about some projects he was doing and Hazel was texting him about why he seemed so sad. Nico didn't know how that had turned into an argument, or even that at some point Will had come home, but suddenly the two of them were shouting and Nico was vicious, more vicious than he had any right to be.
"At least I'm not healing dangerous criminals!"
Will had flinched back and all the rage that had been burning through Nico suddenly vanished. He had crossed the line, he knew. And so, when tears began blurring against the blue in Will’s eyes, and he turned and fled back to his room, slamming the door behind him Nico didn't follow. Will wouldn't want to see him now.
Will apologised first which was typical. Nico tried, and failed, not to be mad at him about that.
"I don't get it," Will said. "What is going on in your head?"
Nico didn't tell him. Even if he'd wanted to he couldn't form thoughts clearly explaining the rationale behind how he thought the only reason Will would ever like him was out of some twisted revenge plot, let alone explain that to Will.
Will had waited, eyes pleading but Nico just shook his head. And then it wasn't a wall between them anymore but an abyss.
To his surprise the next time Jason called it wasn't Jason at all but Piper.
"Jason told me," she said. "He feels awful but he didn't know how to help. He thought maybe I'd be able to give some advice."
Nico liked Piper but he really didn't think she'd be able to help, and besides he didn't know exactly how much Jason had told her.
It was a Thursday when Nico found himself in the living room with Will. Neither had been in the same space without something to do for a horribly long time: Will was burying himself in studying again and Nico was getting good both at avoidance techniques and finding things to do that meant he wouldn't have to think and form a conversation.
In retrospect Nico knew what was coming. It was the feeling of dread again, but more localised his time, as he watched things spiral out of control between the two of them.
He didn't know where to go, so he went to Reyna's. She told him he was an idiot and he couldn't help but agree. She tried to talk to him, casual conversation at first but then gently trying to get him to open up. Nico didn't - couldn't respond. She asked him how he felt and he didn't know how to respond to that either. He couldn't feel anything. He was numb.

Kickin’ & Screamin’ // Chapter 19
Title: Kickin’ & Screamin’ Fandom: The 100 Pairing: Kabby Tag/Warnings: Modern AU Setting, Kicking and Screaming AU, Kid!Delinquents Chapter(s): 19/22 Read earlier chapters on: AO3
Chapter Summary: You never know when that lucky break is gonna come
Chapter 19: Forgiveness does not change the past, but it gives the future a chance
Abby felt like she was sitting outside the principal’s office like she had been back when she was in middle school.
The only difference between now and then was that she wasn’t in trouble for letting a snake free in Ms. Diana Sydney’s class.
Can you blame her? The woman tried giving a surprise, comprehensive exam that would’ve been worth 15% of their grade.
Thanks to Abby, that exam never happened. Mainly because Ms. Diana Sydney spilt her coffee over all the exam booklets and her computer when the snake wrapped around her leg.
It was definitely worth the three day suspension.
But what she felt sitting in that chair then was nothing compared to what she felt now. She was mainly proud and defiant then (and somewhat afraid of what Principal Cadogon would do).
Now, she was uncertain, empty even.
She held the resignation papers in her hand. Late last night, she had sat at her kitchen table, filling them out. It took her a few hours because she had to stop every few lines.
She was still in disbelief.
Even though they had lost two days ago, the reality of the fallout was still fresh in her mind. The heartache was still fresh.
The only thing keeping her head high at the moment was the fact she hadn’t seen Cage after the game. The last time she saw him was when he left the field.
Now, she was waiting outside Pike’s office. She had set up a meeting to hand in her resignation papers. Originally, it was supposed to happen a half hour ago, but Pike had texted her saying that an emergency situation had been brought to his attention.
And with perfect timing, she saw her old business partner walking up.
Marcus didn’t carry the usual confidence and power he held in his stance. He looked as detached as he felt. His eyes were trained to the floor until he reached the waiting area. Then, they fell on Abby.
The two looked at each other, no words being exchanged. They didn’t need to be. Both knew what the other was going through, both knew how the other felt. Both knew there was nothing they could do.
He broke the eye contact and plopped down into a seat one away from Abby. He wasn’t sure how the tension between them concerning the game against the Reapers was. He knew it wasn’t bad during the semifinals, but now it was past that.
His past actions then had influenced the outcome of the semifinals. He was the reason they lost the game and their positions as coaches. The resignation papers in his hand felt like dead weight, a burden. He could only assume she felt the same the way as he watched the way she was clutching her own.
He would understand if she hated him. He would understand if she didn’t accept his apology as he broke the silence by saying, “I’m sorry.”
Her eyes drifted over to where he sat. She didn’t respond right away. She knew this conversation was coming, but she still wasn’t prepared for it. If she was honest with herself, she didn’t think she ever would have been.
That little honesty confused her.  She had been ready to face anything Marcus threw at her, even what he pulled at the Reapers’ game. She had known what to do, how to react. Right now, she wasn’t sure what to say in response. Why?
Maybe it was the way his voice sounded genuine. Maybe it was the fact that she didn’t like being this upset at him. Maybe it was that she couldn’t stand not talking to him, even if it was just their constant bickering and teasing.
Maybe it was the realization that the “tension” they had played with may hold more than a passionate make out in his hallway or against the bathroom wall.
In that tension there was an understanding, there were years of history between them, and now it was all fucked up by his actions that one game. It made her uncomfortable, and for some reason she knew it made him uncomfortable too.
So, deciding to take the comfortable way and how she knew to handle him usually, she acted like Abby and asked in mocking tone, “For?”
He immediately recognized it and he smiled as he looked down to his hands. He appreciated her attempt at small humor, at her attempt to make things normal between them. Unlike old times, however, it was forced. He feared it would never return to like old time unless he was serious this one time and sincerely apologized.
Looking back to her, he told her with a shrug, “Everything.”
She raised an eyebrow back at him, encouraging him to go on.
“From the arguments that lead to what I did at the Reapers game, to what I did at the Reapers game, to losing the semifinals, and to ultimately losing our positions as the kids’ coaches,” he explained. He ran a hand through his hair as he shook his head in defeat. “It’s all my fault.”
Abby didn’t reply right away. She examined Marcus for a short while.
He was fidgeting with his fingers, once in a great a while running them through his hair or scratching at his beard. His right foot was tapping silently against the ground, knee bumping as well. He couldn’t make eye contact with her either.
She sat back in her chair, looking to the ceiling. “You fucked up bad,” she finally replied. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw his shoulders sag in defeat. It broke her heart the slightest bit.
She continued on, telling him, “Now, what you did against the Reapers, that little stunt…that was a bullshit move.” She saw his shoulders dip a bit more at the jab. She kept her eyes on the ceiling as she finished up, “I shouldn’t forgive you. I should run you over with my car like I planned on doing when I left the hospital that day.”
It was silent as the words hung between them. Marcus watched his hands, not sure how to carry on the conversation. Abby kept her eyes on the ceiling, heart beating a little faster as her next words formed in her mind.
She told him, “Other than that, we’re both at fault.”
This makes him curious as he looks over to her. Her eyes are still trained on the ceiling and he gets enraptured in the way she’s lost in a memory.
In her mind, she’s back on the field the day of the incident. She’s just been stopped by Indra, blocking her way to the man she wanted nothing more than to tear apart. Or, hit with her car.
Then, she had admitted to Indra that they both were guilty of avoiding their mistakes and pointing the other’s out. They were even guiltier when they found an easy outlet to mask those mistakes.
“How?” Is all he asks.
She chuckled a bit as she looked away from the ceiling. She finally looked over to him and simply told him, “We both know what part of coaching we suck at, but we ignored them from the sake of our ego and pride between each other. There’s no doubt that was part of the reason that drove you to your decision that day.”
Marcus found himself agreeing, thinking of the differences he had found between that Tuesday and Thursday.
“That’s the true reason behind why we’re failing,” Abby explained. She just shrugged as she continued, “We couldn’t work together to fix those issues because we still wanted that up on the other. It was worse when those Grounder kids joined because then we didn’t need to fix those issues. Those issues didn’t matter since we were winning.”
Marcus nodded as he listened. That was glaring when they had their ass kicked by Alpha Station. It was also clear after Lincoln had gotten hurt. If Abby had let Clarke on defense earlier, she may have been able to work with Miller and the rest of the backline to prevent the winning goal. If Marcus had made earlier practices more enjoyable, maybe Miller would’ve run back like he did in that Thursday practice.
She bit her lip, her next words on the tip of her tongue. It was different admitting her faults to Clarke than it was admitting them to Marcus.
She forced the words out before she could chicken out. “And when those issues became glaring after the Alpha Station game and the incident with the Reapers game, I only wanted to blame you and your faults. It took Clarke to show me that I was at fault as well.”
Marcus regarded her with curiosity. Had Clarke opened her eyes as Bellamy did with him?
“It was after the Tuesday practice,” Abby began, “and Clarke looked depressed. Hell, all the kids did when I picked her up. I, of course, blamed you because you don’t know the definition of fun. Clarke had agreed but brought up a memory that resembled our situation.”
Marcus’ mind was flashing back to his own dinner with Bellamy that same night. Had both been slapped back into reality by their own kids on the same night?
“What she told me…it opened my eyes to say the least,” Abby told him, frowning the slightest bit. She regarded Marcus with sad eyes. “You know how hard it is to hear from your daughter that you’ve been wrong about her all season?”
If only Abby knew. Marcus thought of Octavia and how Bellamy accused him of never asking the same thing he demanded of Abby. “You have no idea,” Marcus more mumbled to himself.
Abby still caught wind of it and reached over, her hand coming to hold his lightly. He watched their hands for a second before finding her eyes. There was an understanding in them and she offered him a reassuring smile. He gave her one back.
“You know what she told me that night? Besides telling me I was wrong,” Marcus chuckled at her bitter tone as she continued to smile at him, “she told me that I was afraid of change once and I was in the same position. I kept coaching as if I was still coaching for the Lifesavers. I wasn’t coaching for the Delinquents.”
The realization Marcus had made that Thursday practice rushed into his mind. It was essentially the same thing. He recognized that the Delinquents needed them both, not the coach of the Lifesavers or the Assassins. They needed the coaches of the Delinquents.
“And I realized she was right,” Abby said. “The Delinquents needed her on defense, not at forward. Even though they lost this past Saturday, the game would’ve been a lot worse if Clarke wasn’t on defense.”
Marcus took it all in. Abby had finally admitted what he had accused her of for the past month. She even admitted that he was right about Clarke. But Marcus didn’t feel the leap of joy he figured he would feel. Instead, he felt guilty on his own part.
He squeezed her hand as a gesture of comfort and it drew her eyes back to him. He winked and whispered, hoping to make her smile, “Bout damn time.”
It earned him a laugh and he smiled in response. He had rarely heard her laughter when they would argue relentlessly. Every time he heard, he only wished she would laugh more. Secretly, he wished he would be the reason behind it.
He began stroking her thumb with his, his eyes watching his own movements. “I too had realized what a dick I had been to the kids after a chat with Bellamy that same Tuesday night.”
Abby leaned over slightly and whispered to him, “Bout damn time.”
He laughed, genuinely and full-heartedly. He shook his head as Abby watched him with her own smile. She had stated it before, but her favorite thing about Marcus (besides the hair obviously) was his laugh when it wasn’t directed at her.
“About six years ago, I made a promise to my kids that I wouldn’t ever do what someone that used to be close to us did,” he told her. She watched him with curiosity. He sighed, saying, “With what I did at the Reapers game, I broke that promise.”
He could feel Abby squeeze his hand back and he smiled as he looked back to them. “I didn’t even realize it myself, Bellamy had to point it out,” he admitted, voice cracking with disappointment. It wasn’t the only thing cracking as he felt pain in his chest.
“What that person had done to me, I did it to you,” he told her. The memory brought him pain, both of his ex-wife and the game. “I was once on the end you were on that day. I know how it felt to be betrayed like that, behind your back and for selfish reasons, but I still went out and did it.”
His hand was beginning to shake and Abby’s clasped his tighter. His foot tapping became erratic. “I was so blinded by my need to prove you wrong, to show that I knew how to win and knew what Octavia wanted, that I disregarded your feelings when I did what I did. And I feel like shit for doing it.”
His voice was cracking, a tear crawling down his cheek. He quickly wiped it away, shaking his head, not able to make eye contact with her. “I became the person I resented the most and couldn’t see it, but my twelve year old kids could. I’m so sorry, Abby.”
Hearing his voice drowned with tears and pain made Abby’s heart break. What he had done was shitty and she was glad he saw that. That didn’t mean it still didn’t make her feel bad for him, she did. She squeezed his hand for comfort, earning a shaky sigh from him.
“When Bellamy told me that,” Marcus continued, “it was like a wakeup call. I felt guilty immediately. I tried to blame my ignorance on knowing what Octavia wanted for my actions. Even though Bellamy had pointed out what I did, I still didn’t want to admit my fault.”
He watched her fingers as he took a moment to collect himself. He admitted to her, “He asked me if I truly knew what made Octavia happy. And I do, I really do. I just didn’t want to admit it was something you had brought to the team.”
Abby was stunned for a second. She knew exactly what he was talking about. He was talking about sharks and minnows.
He gripped her hand tighter to his, lacing the fingers the slightest. He said, “I didn’t want to admit it because I thought I was superior to you in coaching. I didn’t want a game from a ‘lesser coach’ making Octavia happy when I had failed for five years.”
Abby’s eyes had went to their hands. He was still stroking her hand; he hadn’t stopped the moment since she grabbed his hand. She found it comforting as her heart was racing from his words.
“I thought your game, sharks and minnows, was a waste of time,” he explained, “but then I saw the difference in the practices immediately when I ran it on Thursday. It was like a blow to the stomach. It was glaring.”
He finally looked over to her and offered her a weak smile. “It made me realize that fun wasn’t so bad. It made me realize that if we truly wanted to succeed, then the kids would need both of their coaches. They needed the coaches of the Delinquents.”
It was silent between them as Marcus kept moving his thumb across her palm. Even though it was meant as a comforting gesture for her, he found himself relaxing as he repeated the pattern over and over again.
“You may think you suck at coaching,” he abruptly said, thinking of the many times she rarely told him so. He had agreed then, but not anymore. “But you don’t. You excel in the one part of coaching I lack in. I’ll be damned if I don’t think that makes you a great coach.”
His words struck home. It took him five years for him to recognize her as a coach after they won their first game with the Delinquents. But somehow, this felt more real. This felt as if he was actually recognizing her as a coach.
It made her happy.
She joked to him, “Seems like we balance each other out pretty well, huh?”
He smirked over to her, that one special smirk. It didn’t piss her off like it did the past few weeks. He said, “I’m lucky to have someone like you.”
Abby’s mind raced back to the beginning of the season, when the two had just received the news of the merging of their two teams. They were at a restaurant where Abby had learned Marcus hated pickles. She had also teased him by telling their waitress that he’d be lucky to have someone like her.
She smirked back and admitted, “What was supposed to be the worst thing to happen to us turned out to be the best thing.”
Silence fell between the two as the words settled. Neither disagreed, both knew she was right. The start was rough and even rougher in the middle, but now they were coming to the end of their journey and it was smoothing out.
They admitted their faults and both knew how to handle them. Too bad there was no chance for them to prove it.
Pike’s office door slammed open, ripping away the little world the two were absorbed in. Their hands detached and they looked to see a pissed off Nia.
She paid no attention to them as she made her way down the hall and out of the building. The two looked to the other, confusion written across both faces.
Right after, Pike exited his office and his eyes drifted to the two. He smiled big and clapped his hands, telling them, “Just the two I wanted to see!”
Abby looked to the resignation paper in her hands and then back to Pike. “Well,” she said, “we did have an appointment.”
His eyes followed her same movement and offered her grin. He told them, “You’re not going to need those anymore.”
Abby and Marcus looked to each other, even more confusion appearing on their faces. Marcus looked to Pike, saying, “I’m not complaining, but what?”
He lifted his hand to show the way into his office. He told them, “Come in, both of you. We have a lot to talk about.”
Abby wasn’t sure if that was good news but his words about not needing her resignation papers sent off alarms in her head. Was that in connection to Nia storming out? What was going on?
The two entered his office and got a sense of Déjà vu as Pike closed the door behind them. They sat in the same chairs they had at the beginning of the season as Pike made his way to his own chair behind his desk.
He held his hands out and the two offered their resignation papers. He glanced over them and flickered his eyes to them. They were confused and it showed. He smiled and proceeded to rip the papers up.
Abby watched astonished, as did Marcus. The two looked to each other again, not sure what to say.
When Pike finished, he wiped his hands, smiling at the masterpiece of a mess he had made on his desk. He folded his hands together and rested them on his desk as he regarded the two with a warm smile.
It was silent until Abby asked, “What the fuck?”
Pike laughed and responded, “I said the same thing about an hour ago.”
That didn’t answer Abby’s outburst, it just made her more confused. She replied, “I have no fucking idea what is going on. Why is Nia storming out like a child? Why did you rip up our resignation papers?”
Pike shook his head and said, “I’m surprised you haven’t heard yet.”
That caught their attention. They glanced at each for a small moment before Marcus looked back to Pike, asking, “Heard what?”
“I got a call this morning from Alie,” he started off, “and she told me some interesting news about a player on Ice Nation. Do you remember a girl named Echo?”
Hell, anyone could. She was the reason Abby spent all night working on those damn papers. They both nodded, curious as to where Pike was going with it.
“Well,” he shrugged, “Alie took a closer look at her player card and registration forms. She had told me she had remembered reffing the girl earlier in the season for a premiere team, but wasn’t sure. She got back to me this morning with the news.”
Abby’s heart was pounding. If what Alie had thought was true, and Echo was a premiere player, then that would make her ineligible to play in Arkadia’s rec league. Resulting from that, Ice Nation would’ve broken the rules by using an illegal player.
Pike confirmed her suspicions by adding on, “Echo is indeed a premiere player. I called up Nia for a meeting and she swears ignorance on knowing of Echo’s eligibility. Her sincere surprise after I told her made me believe her.”
Marcus and Abby knew Nia was competitive and would do anything to win, but she would never cheat. She believed in training hard for what you wanted and you would win what you earned.
“She then proceeded to tell me that Cage had recommended Echo to join her roster as a guest player,” Pike continued on, “since she would be light on the bench that weekend.”
Marcus’ memory immediately went back to the game against the Reapers. His mind settled on him bumping into Cage in the parking lot after they had won. He had been on the phone with Nia. Just like everything else, it was getting hard to believe all his involvements were just coincidences.
“She told me that Cage said Echo would be able to play, that she passed the qualifications,” Pike shook his head. “She did, except the fact that she was a premiere player.”
They understood why Nia was so upset now. She had trusted Cage to bring her a good, eligible player. Instead, he tried to twisting his way around the rules (again) for his own gain.
Both Abby and Marcus knew why he did it. He was afraid of versing them in the finals and actually losing. He saw them as a threat, one he needed to eliminate.
Just like Indra, just like new teams that would’ve entered the league.
“So,” Abby commented, “does that mean…”
Pike smiled to her. “It means that Ice Nation, whether it be Nia’s fault or not, broke the rules. They used an ineligible player and that player was the make or break for your game.”
Abby felt her heart pounding faster in anticipation after every word he spoke. Her hands gripped the arms of the chair, scooting to the edge of her seat. Was it truly happening? Was that lucky break Abby had been waiting for, for five years, finally here?
Marcus watched him with wary eyes. He knew what was coming next, but he wasn’t sure if he could believe it. Hell, he had hoped after that loss that something like this would come up. He never knew the lucky break Abby mentioned would actually be a real thing.
Pike offered them a giant grin as he announced, “Ice Nation has been disqualified. The Delinquents are in the finals against Mount Weather.”

Weekly Update: What came here (19-26 March)
These to His Memory—since he held them dear,
Perchance as finding there unconsciously
Some image of himself—I dedicate,
I dedicate, I consecrate with tears—
These Idylls-Idylls of the King (Alfred Tennyson)
So yeah this week is slowed down but thank goodness I took off on Monday to rest up for me,so what I am focused to clear up the prompts I did not have time to type up. In addition I have been doing more portrait studies so the reasoning why I did not have time to write that much. So you may see an improvement of my drawings xD
Idylls of the Kings: And yes I have been tackling with Idylls of the King which is a toughie but I am slowly getting there,my favorite is Viven and Merlin
"Says she not well? and there is more—this rhyme
Is like the fair pearl-necklace of the Queen,
That burst in dancing, and the pearls were spilt;
Some lost, some stolen, some as relics kept.
But nevermore the same two sister pearls
Ran down the silken thread to kiss each other
On her white neck—so is it with this rhyme:
and parts of the marriage of Geraint
Had married Enid, Yniol's only child,
And loved her, as he loved the light of Heaven.
And as the light of Heaven varies, now
At sunrise, now at sunset, now by night
With moon and trembling stars, so loved Geraint
To make her beauty vary day by day,
In crimsons and in purples and in gems.
So yes it was mega wild XD,ham up the Victorian melancholy which speaking about which I did up my all girl King Arthur story Last Rites which she saved a wandering girl knight which speak about her problems with Arthurian (Which supposed to be Arta but then again I forget that story).
The old and the New (Angst included): Following by that I did up Salam which I have this idea for ages on killing the Prince for ages,so I am actually ok with that though I am not a big fan of angst. Which I did one with Drago’s interactions with Euilalia with Understood which I really loved that little passage of him with Cecily which I drew Cecily one boob thing (Yes I did the thing)
Drago read through the papers,he could not help but to hear the giggle of Cecily. That was perhaps his favorite sound in the world. She seems to saunter away into the light. What he notice is how beautiful she was, wearing those one breasted dresses with silks flapping across the winds. Her perfume strangled him. At that one moment he nearly want to grab her hand and followed her to the light. Eulalia noticed that wistful smile of his. It was rare as a mirage in the desert. (A.K.A STAB ME IN THE CHEST YOU ASSHOLE)
Which I made up from that angst with Surpise which Apollonia is the queen of gatecrashing sex XD. To be honest I enjoyed writing that given I was pretty stressed on the new schedule route which he is like GODDAMN Apollonia which I planned her directing her brother to do the dirty deed which he is not having it xD. So yes Apollonia get to have the sex with Little Nat which I explored her kinks in which she is really dominating XD
Tumblr media
Cecily’s adventures stories: Meanwhile I get to expand my Cecily Adventure stories characters which I welcomed my Simon Pegg character St Clarie who is pretty much king douchebag in Shots which she is like Ew. Stop. NO. Do not worry you will see him as i am planning one which he meet Cecily pregnant and he is like I know you and she is like goodbye motherf**er
Tumblr media
and Eurus the mysterious dragon (which is an homage to Borch Three Jackdaws) with Breathe which I painted her placidly which is fun.
Tumblr media
RELEASE: (YOU KNOW WHEN YOU WATCH THAT SHOW): Meanwhile I am trying out with the adventures of Rasmus and Eustance with the Mononoke tone with The Mad Beauty with the Island of Sighs which I subvert Kate’s mythologies of the island (Inspired by my love for Chinese love stories) with the girl in the mountain being crazy. Sadly there is no cool dude like Medicine seller to settle your problems as Rasmus is the king of troll though yes I am borrowing inspiration of him. Anyway speaking about my infinite love for Mononoke,so I watched the prequel to the series which is amazingly beautiful and it is better than the series version of Bakeneko (OOPS but never less that series is beautiful). So I am thinking of a fanfic idea which I called it State which refers to the Medicine Seller’s analysis to defeat the Mononoke which I have chosen my favorite yokai as the headers so the one I am expanding is Monotogari (Again a homage to one of Mizoguchi’s works Ugetsu Monotogari which deals with the supernatural which I am planning to watch next to prepare for that fanfic) with the chapter called Kami-Sama which the Mononoke took a form of a God which it went twisted when it demands to sacrifice random people for the sake of safe passage D:
Tumblr media
MOVIES THANK GOD: Onto the movies,so i have been back to watching films,so it feels so good. It started with La La Land which I really liked a lot especially with how they did the moving back and forth in focus with the characters with Wonder which spark to rewatch Rebel without a Cause which I absolutely loved for realises which I homage the planetarium scene (which La La land did it subtly) with Morphine Infinite with Fitzy and Mercurio which I did not write often but I want to create that dreading feeling when I watched that scene). And speaking of movies I rewatch Cocteau’s La Belle Et Bete with my sister which I fell in love as it reminds me of my Sleeping Prince story which I want that eerie feeling. So I may do that weird Gothic feel I watched in Cocteau’s films

Cheapest place to get insured on a friends car?
"Cheapest place to get insured on a friends car?
I was insured for a week on a friends car, a 1.4 peugeot 206.  on her policy and it was 22, i thought this was a little steep, as my car insurance only cost me 18 a month for my own car (when i had 1) and that was a 1.6 escort.   whats the best option as i won't drive uninsured, and need to borrow her car again and her insurance company says they can't add me as a named driver as she has changed her policy 4 times already this year!

Can I (Being a named driver on his fully comprehensive insurence) drive someone else's car with there permission? Thanks in advance""
Why do insurance companies hate performance/modified cars?
It seems like the ideal insurance company wants you to drive a safe and slow bumper car and have absolutely no fun driving to and from wherever you are going. They assume that any sports car or car with performance enhancements means you will crash. It means you are a reckless driver and no good to the general public. It means you will blatantly violate the rules of the road and have no remorse for doing it. All of that is a load of crap... Most of the major car companies don't even offer, when getting a free quote, to see Ferrari's or Lamborghinis prices, they just won't insure them! Your expected to report any and all modifications to the company so they can jack up the premium. So why do they hate those types of cars so much?""

The Wall Street Journal published an article a few weeks ago discussing how rate shopping for auto insurance can payoff. Understand what discounts you qualify for 3. Price matters, but service does also Does the cost of auto insurance outweigh all other factors? Were you aware of what insurance companies are looking at to determine costs? How does quality of service factor into your final decision? If I change the address to my friends house who lives like 2miles away the price goes down to 2700 and if I change the address to my Nans address who only lives 15minutes away it goes down to 1500. Someone please help and don't just tell me stuff I already know.

Pregnant? Health Insurance?
My bf and I have been intimate for the past almost 3 years, which is how long we've been together, we've only used protection a few times. I have been on BC for the past year to a year and a half, it's the generic for Tri-Nessa. About 2 weeks ago, maybe a little longer than that, I quit the BC and we had unprotected sex for maybe 3 days in a row and he came inside of me, on the third day after we had finished I got cramps in my lower back which usually is how my cramps feel a day or two before I get my period but I also had very light bleeding and the next day it had gotten heavier and lasted a couple days. Now this was no where near the date I'm supposed to get my period, which I thought was weird. I took three pregnancy tests but they were all negative, then again I took them way too soon. I have a appt with my obgyn on Monday. Also, ive been feeling sluggish, not wanting to move much, when I sit down on the couch its like i cant get comfortable and my side like cramps up. Opinions? About insurance, I'm on insurance with my mom because she has food stamps and gets a disability check, so I have united health care insurance through her. I dropped out of school, dumb decision, I know, but I found a babysitting job and I get paid $150 a week. So they didn't put me in the school program at welfare. Now my insurance will run out in August when I turn 18 so if I find out I'm pregnant would they give me and the baby free insurance? My sister just had her third and she plus my nephew had both received free Medicaid. She's 28 so does free insurance differ by age? Since she's 28 and I'm 18 is she eligible for it because she's older or am I eligible as well? My bf and I have been busting our asses looking for jobs and he's signed up for The National Gaurd. We've been together way too long and he is very happy whether I am pregnant or not, he's a good man. I don't give a crap about any rude comments or opinions, I am just looking for advice from girls with experience.""

Which auto insurance company will NOT check my credit?
I saw an advertisement for one, but forget which one it is. I have pretty good credit, but I do not believe in their correlation between credit & driving skills. I also do not believe that they should penalize people with bad credit under the assumption that these people will file a false claim. These insurance companies have all the incentive to damage people's credit files so they charge more for their products. I also pay in full, so they will not be extending credit to me. Even if the policy costs more, I do not wish to reward bad behavior by doing business with the big insurance companies.""

Help with car insurance please?
Hello, I Live in the UK, I am 22 years old and I have a Kia picanto which is my everyday car. My girlfriend is the main driver and owner and I am a named driver on the policy. I have a Subaru Impreza which I want to use at weekends etc and only little use. Is there any sort of Insurance for this? Its a 1998 plate so don't think I qualify for classic cover. Basically I will do about 500 miles a year in the Subaru and can't afford the 4000 for the year. I know a lot of people will say just sell it etc etc. But I love the car and owned for the last year and do not want to sell. I just want a little help please. With the cost of petrol etc I no longer use the Subaru as everyday use as it gets me about 11 MPG and the Kia about 53 MPG and can't afford two full price premiums. So is there any temp weekend cover for the year or small use/classic kind of thing? Any advice will be very much appreciated. Kind Regards""

I called my insurance to add him onto my car and they refuse to. Why do people keep comparing health insurance mandates to car insurance mandates?
Car insurance mandates are done at the STATE level, in accordance with the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. constitution. Yet people (the president included) continue to claim that a FEDERAL mandate to buy insurance is no different than being required to cover your car. (Completely ignoring that you have to BUY a car before you must get insurance...the govt's basically saying they own your body...insure it or be taxed) So isn't a FEDERAL mandate unconstitutional unless you plan on writing an amendment to the Constitution so that such a mandate is in accordance with the Tenth Amendment?? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27384.html The questions from ABCs George Stephanopoulos highlighted a politically dangerous new aspect of the health reform debate for Obama  as critics from Republican leaders to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say his reform proposals amount to a middle-class tax increase. Obama promised during the campaign that Americans earning less than $250,000 a year would not see any tax increases from an Obama administration. Obama strongly denied that the mandate amounts to a tax increase  saying it was no different than requiring people to have auto insurance and charging a penalty if they dont. He also said it was important for everyone to have insurance so that people who do carry insurance dont have to shoulder the load for people who dont. The excise tax is designed as an enforcement mechanism to ensure people will carry insurance.""

My car insurance company (One Call) recently cancelled my policy due to them not receiving my proof of no claims in time (that's another issue). How am I supposed to afford car insurance?
I'm driving uninsured right now because for me to get car insurance is $900 every six months. That would crush me financially right now. Between rent and gas, and what little Starbucks pretends to pay me, not to mention food (and sometimes that's one meal a day, and even then it may be stealing expired sandwiches and pastries from the garbage can at Starbucks). So, it's utterly naive of the government to think of driving as a luxury , when in reality- when you have to travel 20 miles a day to get to work at Starbucks- walking is unrealistic. The bus routes do not go by there, by the way. How the hell do they expect a 24-year old man to afford car insurance, when he has to work to earn the money to pay for it, and he has to drive to work, and in order to drive he has to drive illegally?! The @#*%ing system is completely screwed up if you ask me. Don't get me started on how the hell I'm supposed to afford gas these days, either.""
Questions about insurance in NJ?

She lives with us and is getting to the point where she does not drive much anymore. She was told by her insurance company that i do not have to be put on her plan because we live in the same house, but i'm just curious how i would go about proving that i am insured if i ever got into an accident in her car. Can i just hold on to a copy of my POI from one of my parent's two card (in my wallet) to show a police officer, or do I need something specifically for that car? Thank you for the help :)""

Any place in CA that has cheap health insurance?
Please this is important. I need to know if any company sells cheap health insurance under $100 because my insurance got canceled because I'm not a full time student in college. I tried to apply right away but classes filled up really fast. And plus my ID expired and I was gonna get my drivers license before this all happened and I don't wanna pay $30 for both an ID and drivers license. My parents are gonna force me to get Tri Care insurance ($200 a month) if I don't find a cheaper company right away. And I don't wanna pay that much. Please help me, I'm so stressed out I'm having thoughts of suicide! I wish this never happened but I didn't know about this insurance thing/policy about full time classes until now. I'm so... stressed. Please help me out! Plus if you tell me about the company what do you have to lose? In fact it's helping you out! Thanks.""

Car Insurance - Young Driver 18 years old Male - NEED HELP PLEASE!!!!?
I have recently passed my driving test (3 days ago!) and will be buying a car ASAP as I have a job lined up and have just left school. I've tried tens of comparison sites and even rang some insurance companies direct to try and get a better quote... I have looked at the smallest possible engine size, that being 0.8l and 1l engines. I've looked at cars such as FORD KA, Vauxhall Corsa, Nissan Micra, Renault Clio and a few others too. The cheapest quote I have found for all of the cars is for a 2000 Ford KA 1.3l 3dr 4 seats (the smallest KA engine size possible) and that price was 3,800 paying monthly with a company called My Policy . However, I have used various other KA registration plates all the same engine size but some being 2003 models or 2005 and the insurance jumps to over 6,000! I haven't found another FORD KA cheaper than 5,500 and obviously if I can't get that one particular car out of the thousands for sale that insurance quote will be invalid anyway. Basically, I've tried everything. Adding named drivers (with lots of driving experience 30+ years), putting my car in a locked garage, on the road, tried different cars - models, registration plates, ages, engine sizes, and not to forget the countless comparison sites. The funny thing is with MyPolicy I went onto their site directly to get a quote and they were unable to give me a quote when entering exactly the same information into the Tiger.co.uk comparison site, that site brought up the 3,800 quote with MyPolicy but when I use their site directly they can't give me a quote... I know insurance is based on MANY factors, believe me I understand that. I tried entering different post codes (just out of curiosity) and it did help, but only fractionally. It just seems (other than the 1 obscure quote of 3,800 on ONE car, out of the 100+ I've tried) that I can't get a quote cheaper than 5,000 for a car with the smallest engine size and insurance group possible... It's ridiculous. Please don't advise fronting because it's illegal and I want to build up some NCD anyway. CAN ANYONE HELP ME GET A QUOTE CHEAPER THAN 3,500?! Thanks a lot, -Ash.""

Legal question about car insurance?
I bought a car off of my coworker a few months back, and everything is in my name. I had paid for insurance but I was going through a rough patch and it lapsed. My mother, whom is living with me, decided to be nice and pay for a month of insurance, through a new company. This is a new policy, as my old one had lapsed. Recently though, my mother and myself have had a falling out. She's holding my car over my head. She says since she paid for a month of insurance she has free reign over using my car. The car is in my name, and as far as I'm aware based on documents the insurance is as well. The only difference is she paid for that one month of insurance for me. And that month she paid for is still active. So like I said, she is holding the car over my head. I left my house the other night with my car key so she couldn't use it - This is after everyone I asked that I knew told me to take the keys. She is also living with me, I am renting the home. She is making threats through text messages saying that if I don't return the car key she will cancel my policy. Is that possible for her to do? She just paid for a month of insurance, and I believe I'm completely in control of my policy. I don't believe it can be cancelled through her calling. Is that possible? Anyone know? So not only do I own the car, I also rent the house. Legally I don't believe she can hold my own car over my head. Also, to add... After taking my keys, I left my home and went to a my girlfriends to get away for a while. Since I have taken my car keys, she has taken and hid my car battery to insure that I am unable to remove my car from my property. She refuses to give it back because she paid for my one month of insurance to start my policy again... So my questions... 1. Is it possible for her to cancel my insurance is the car is in my name, and if the policy, I believe, is also in my name? 2. Legally, can I call the local police department and have her surrender both my car, as well as it's car battery to me? I don't have my registration information on me, she removed that from the car as well. But a quick look up on my license, as well as my car insurance card that I have should be enough to validate it is indeed my car, correct?""

Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 727-745: Chapter (72) The Rebellion of Absalom
This chapter is based on 2 Samuel 13-19.
“He shall restore fourfold,” had been David's unwitting sentence upon himself, on listening to the prophet Nathan's parable; and according to his own sentence he was to be judged. Four of his sons must fall, and the loss of each would be a result of the father's sin.
The shameful crime of Amnon, the first-born, was permitted by David to pass unpunished and unrebuked. The law pronounced death upon the adulterer, and the unnatural crime of Amnon made him doubly guilty. But David, self-condemned for his own sin, failed to bring the offender to justice. For two full years Absalom, the natural protector of the sister so foully wronged, concealed his purpose of revenge, but only to strike more surely at the last. At a feast of the king's sons the drunken, incestuous Amnon was slain by his brother's command.
Twofold judgment had been meted out to David. The terrible message was carried to him, “Absalom hath slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left. Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.” The king's sons, returning in alarm to Jerusalem, revealed to their father the truth; Amnon alone had been slain; and they “lifted up their voice and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.” But Absalom fled to Talmai, the king of Geshur, his mother's father.
Like other sons of David, Amnon had been left to selfish indulgence. He had sought to gratify every thought of his heart, regardless of the requirements of God. Notwithstanding his great sin, God had borne long with him. For two years he had been granted opportunity for repentance; but he continued in sin, and with his guilt upon him, he was cut down by death, to await the awful tribunal of the judgment.
David had neglected the duty of punishing the crime of Amnon, and because of the unfaithfulness of the king and father and the impenitence of the son, the Lord permitted events to take their natural course, and did not restrain Absalom. When parents or rulers neglect the duty of punishing iniquity, God Himself will take the case in hand. His restraining power will be in a measure removed from the agencies of evil, so that a train of circumstances will arise which will punish sin with sin.
The evil results of David's unjust indulgence toward Amnon were not ended, for it was here that Absalom's alienation from his father began. After he fled to Geshur, David, feeling that the crime of his son demanded some punishment, refused him permission to return. And this had a tendency to increase rather than to lessen the inextricable evils in which the king had come to be involved. Absalom, energetic, ambitious, and unprincipled, shut out by his exile from participation in the affairs of the kingdom, soon gave himself up to dangerous scheming.
At the close of two years Joab determined to effect a reconciliation between the father and his son. And with this object in view he secured the services of a woman of Tekoah, reputed for wisdom. Instructed by Joab, the woman represented herself to David as a widow whose two sons had been her only comfort and support. In a quarrel one of these had slain the other, and now all the relatives of the family demanded that the survivor should be given up to the avenger of blood. “And so,” said the mother, “they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.” The king's feelings were touched by this appeal, and he assured the woman of the royal protection for her son.
After drawing from him repeated promises for the young man's safety, she entreated the king's forbearance, declaring that he had spoken as one at fault, in that he did not fetch home again his banished. “For,” she said, “we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person; yet doth He devise means, that His banished be not expelled from Him.” This tender and touching portrayal of the love of God toward the sinner—coming as it did from Joab, the rude soldier—is a striking evidence of the familiarity of the Israelites with the great truths of redemption. The king, feeling his own need of God's mercy, could not resist this appeal. To Joab the command was given, “Go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again.”
Absalom was permitted to return to Jerusalem, but not to appear at court or to meet his father. David had begun to see the evil effects of his indulgence toward his children; and tenderly as he loved this beautiful and gifted son, he felt it necessary, as a lesson both to Absalom and to the people, that abhorrence for such a crime should be manifested. Absalom lived two years in his own house, but banished from the court. His sister dwelt with him, and her presence kept alive the memory of the irreparable wrong she had suffered. In the popular estimation the prince was a hero rather than an offender. And having this advantage, he set himself to gain the hearts of the people. His personal appearance was such as to win the admiration of all beholders. “In all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.” It was not wise for the king to leave a man of Absalom's character—ambitious, impulsive, and passionate—to brood for two years over supposed grievances. And David's action in permitting him to return to Jerusalem, and yet refusing to admit him to his presence, enlisted in his behalf the sympathies of the people.
With the memory ever before him of his own transgression of the law of God, David seemed morally paralyzed; he was weak and irresolute, when before his sin he had been courageous and decided. His influence with the people had been weakened. And all this favored the designs of his unnatural son.
Through the influence of Joab, Absalom was again admitted to his father's presence; but though there was an outward reconciliation, he continued his ambitious scheming. He now assumed an almost royal state, having chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. And while the king was more and more inclined to desire retirement and solitude, Absalom sedulously courted the popular favor.
The influence of David's listlessness and irresolution extended to his subordinates; negligence and delay characterized the administration of justice. Absalom artfully turned every cause of dissatisfaction to his own advantage. Day by day this man of noble mien might be seen at the gate of the city, where a crowd of suppliants waited to present their wrongs for redress.
Absalom mingled with them and listened to their grievances, expressing sympathy with their sufferings and regret at the inefficiency of the government. Having thus listened to the story of a man of Israel, the prince would reply, “Thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee;” adding, “O that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice! And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.”
Fomented by the artful insinuations of the prince, discontent with the government was fast spreading. The praise of Absalom was on the lips of all. He was generally regarded as heir to the kingdom; the people looked upon him with pride as worthy of this high station, and a desire was kindled that he might occupy the throne. “So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.” Yet the king, blinded by affection for his son, suspected nothing. The princely state which Absalom had assumed, was regarded by David as intended to do honor to his court—as an expression of joy at the reconciliation.
The minds of the people being prepared for what was to follow, Absalom secretly sent picked men throughout the tribes, to concert measures for a revolt. And now the cloak of religious devotion was assumed to conceal his traitorous designs. A vow made long before while he was in exile must be paid in Hebron. Absalom said to the king, “I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron. For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.” The fond father, comforted with this evidence of piety in his son, dismissed him with his blessing. The conspiracy was now fully matured. Absalom's crowning act of hypocrisy was designed not only to blind the king but to establish the confidence of the people, and thus to lead them on to rebellion against the king whom God had chosen.
Absalom set forth for Hebron, and there went with him “two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not anything.” These men went with Absalom, little thinking that their love for the son was leading them into rebellion against the father. Upon arriving at Hebron, Absalom immediately summoned Ahithophel, one of the chief counselors of David, a man in high repute for wisdom, whose opinion was thought to be as safe and wise as that of an oracle. Ahithophel joined the conspirators, and his support made the cause of Absalom appear certain of success, attracting to his standard many influential men from all parts of the land. As the trumpet of revolt was sounded, the prince's spies throughout the country spread the tidings that Absalom was king, and many of the people gathered to him.
Meanwhile the alarm was carried to Jerusalem, to the king. David was suddenly aroused, to see rebellion breaking out close beside his throne. His own son—the son whom he had loved and trusted—had been planning to seize his crown and doubtless to take his life. In his great peril David shook off the depression that had so long rested upon him, and with the spirit of his earlier years he prepared to meet this terrible emergency. Absalom was mustering his forces at Hebron, only twenty miles away. The rebels would soon be at the gates of Jerusalem.
From his palace David looked out upon his capital—“beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, ... the city of the great King.”Psalm 48:2. He shuddered at the thought of exposing it to carnage and devastation. Should he call to his help the subjects still loyal to his throne, and make a stand to hold his capital? Should he permit Jerusalem to be deluged with blood? His decision was taken. The horrors of war should not fall upon the chosen city. He would leave Jerusalem, and then test the fidelity of his people, giving them an opportunity to rally to his support. In this great crisis it was his duty to God and to his people to maintain the authority with which Heaven had invested him. The issue of the conflict he would trust with God.
In humility and sorrow David passed out of the gate of Jerusalem—driven from his throne, from his palace, from the ark of God, by the insurrection of his cherished son. The people followed in long, sad procession, like a funeral train. David's bodyguard of Cherethites, Pelethites, and six hundred Gittites from Gath, under the command of Ittai, accompanied the king. But David, with characteristic unselfishness, could not consent that these strangers who had sought his protection should be involved in his calamity. He expressed surprise that they should be ready to make this sacrifice for him. Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, “Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile. Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.”
Ittai answered, “As the Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.” These men had been converted from paganism to the worship of Jehovah, and nobly they now proved their fidelity to their God and their king. David, with grateful heart, accepted their devotion to his apparently sinking cause, and all passed over the brook Kidron on the way toward the wilderness.
Again the procession halted. A company clad in holy vestments was approaching. “And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God.” The followers of David looked upon this as a happy omen. The presence of that sacred symbol was to them a pledge of their deliverance and ultimate victory. It would inspire the people with courage to rally to the king. Its absence from Jerusalem would bring terror to the adherents of Absalom.
At sight of the ark joy and hope for a brief moment thrilled the heart of David. But soon other thoughts came to him. As the appointed ruler of God's heritage he was under solemn responsibility. Not personal interests, but the glory of God and the good of his people, were to be uppermost in the mind of Israel's king. God, who dwelt between the cherubim, had said of Jerusalem, “This is My rest” (Psalm 132:14); and without divine authority neither priest nor king had a right to remove therefrom the symbol of His presence. And David knew that his heart and life must be in harmony with the divine precepts, else the ark would be the means of disaster rather than of success. His great sin was ever before him. He recognized in this conspiracy the just judgment of God. The sword that was not to depart from his house had been unsheathed. He knew not what the result of the struggle might be. It was not for him to remove from the capital of the nation the sacred statutes which embodied the will of their divine Sovereign, which were the constitution of the realm and the foundation of its prosperity.
He commanded Zadok, “Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favor in the eyes of the Lord, He will bring me again, and show me both it and His habitation: but if He thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let Him do to me as seemeth good unto Him.”
David added, “Art not thou a seer?”—a man appointed of God to instruct the people. “Return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.” In the city the priests might do him good service by learning the movements and purposes of the rebels, and secretly communicating them to the king by their sons, Ahimaaz and Jonathan.
As the priests turned back toward Jerusalem a deeper shadow fell upon the departing throng. Their king a fugitive, themselves outcasts, forsaken even by the ark of God—the future was dark with terror and foreboding. “And David went up by the ascent of Mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” Again David was forced to recognize in his calamities the results of his own sin. The defection of Ahithophel, the ablest and most wily of political leaders, was prompted by revenge for the family disgrace involved in the wrong to Bathsheba, who was his granddaughter.
“And David said, O Lord, I pray Thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” Upon reaching the top of the mount, the king bowed in prayer, casting upon God the burden of his soul and humbly supplicating divine mercy. His prayer seemed to be at once answered. Hushai the Archite, a wise and able counselor, who had proved himself a faithful friend to David, now came to him with his robes rent and with earth upon his head, to cast in his fortunes with the dethroned and fugitive king. David saw, as by a divine enlightenment, that this man, faithful and truehearted, was the one needed to serve the interests of the king in the councils at the capital. At David's request Hushai returned to Jerusalem to offer his services to Absalom and defeat the crafty counsel of Ahithophel.
With this gleam of light in the darkness, the king and his followers pursued their way down the eastern slope of Olivet, through a rocky and desolate waste, through wild ravines, and along stony and precipitous paths, toward the Jordan. “And when King David came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed still as he came. And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of King David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial. The Lord hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the Lord hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a bloody man.”
In David's prosperity Shimei had not shown by word or act that he was not a loyal subject. But in the affliction of the king this Benjamite revealed his true character. He had honored David upon his throne, but he cursed him in his humiliation. Base and selfish, he looked upon others as of the same character as himself, and, inspired by Satan, he wreaked his hatred upon him whom God had chastened. The spirit that leads man to triumph over, to revile or distress, one who is in affliction is the spirit of Satan.
Shimei's accusations against David were utterly false—a baseless and malignant slander. David had not been guilty of wrong toward Saul or his house. When Saul was wholly in his power, and he could have slain him, he merely cut the skirt of his robe, and he reproached himself for showing even this disrespect for the Lord's anointed.
Of David's sacred regard for human life, striking evidence had been given, even while he himself was hunted like a beast of prey. One day while he was hidden in the cave of Adullam, his thoughts turning back to the untroubled freedom of his boyhood life, the fugitive exclaimed, “Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!” 2 Samuel 23:13-17. Bethlehem was at that time in the hands of the Philistines; but three mighty men of David's band broke through the guard, and brought of the water of Bethlehem to their master. David could not drink it. “Be it far from me,” he cried; “is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives?” And he reverently poured out the water as an offering to God. David had been a man of war, much of his life had been spent amid scenes of violence; but of all who have passed through such an ordeal, few indeed have been so little affected by its hardening, demoralizing influence as was David.
David's nephew, Abishai, one of the bravest of his captains, could not listen patiently to Shimei's insulting words. “Why,” he exclaimed, “should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.” But the king forbade him. “Behold,” he said, “my son ... seeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for the Lord hath bidden him. It may be that the Lord will look on mine affliction, and that the Lord will requite me good for his cursing this day.”
Conscience was uttering bitter and humiliating truths to David. While his faithful subjects wondered at his sudden reverse of fortune, it was no mystery to the king. He had often had forebodings of an hour like this. He had wondered that God had so long borne with his sins, and had delayed the merited retribution. And now in his hurried and sorrowful flight, his feet bare, his royal robes changed for sackcloth, the lamentations of his followers awaking the echoes of the hills, he thought of his loved capital—of the place which had been the scene of his sin—and as he remembered the goodness and long-suffering of God, he was not altogether without hope. He felt that the Lord would still deal with him in mercy.
Many a wrongdoer has excused his own sin by pointing to David's fall, but how few there are who manifest David's penitence and humility. How few would bear reproof and retribution with the patience and fortitude that he manifested. He had confessed his sin, and for years had sought to do his duty as a faithful servant of God; he had labored for the upbuilding of his kingdom, and under his rule it had attained to strength and prosperity never reached before. He had gathered rich stores of material for the building of the house of God, and now was all the labor of his life to be swept away? Must the results of years of consecrated toil, the work of genius and devotion and statesmanship, pass into the hands of his reckless and traitorous son, who regarded not the honor of God nor the prosperity of Israel? How natural it would have seemed for David to murmur against God in this great affliction!
But he saw in his own sin the cause of his trouble. The words of the prophet Micah breathe the spirit that inspired David's heart. “When I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me. I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against Him, until He plead my cause, and execute judgment for me.” Micah 7:8, 9. And the Lord did not forsake David. This chapter in his experience, when, under cruelest wrong and insult, he shows himself to be humble, unselfish, generous, and submissive, is one of the noblest in his whole experience. Never was the ruler of Israel more truly great in the sight of heaven than at this hour of his deepest outward humiliation.
Had God permitted David to go on unrebuked in sin, and while transgressing the divine precepts, to remain in peace and prosperity upon his throne, the skeptic and infidel might have had some excuse for citing the history of David as a reproach to the religion of the Bible. But in the experience through which He caused David to pass, the Lord shows that He cannot tolerate or excuse sin. And David's history enables us to see also the great ends which God has in view in His dealings with sin; it enables us to trace, even through darkest judgments, the working out of His purposes of mercy and beneficence. He caused David to pass under the rod, but He did not destroy him; the furnace is to purify, but not to consume. The Lord says, “If they break My statutes, and keep not My commandments; then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless My loving-kindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer My faithfulness to fail.” Psalm 89:31-33.
Soon after David left Jerusalem, Absalom and his army entered, and without a struggle took possession of the stronghold of Israel. Hushai was among the first to greet the new-crowned monarch, and the prince was surprised and gratified at the accession of his father's old friend and counselor. Absalom was confident of success. Thus far his schemes had prospered, and eager to strengthen his throne and secure the confidence of the nation, he welcomed Hushai to his court.
Absalom was now surrounded by a large force, but it was mostly composed of men untrained for war. As yet they had not been brought into conflict. Ahithophel well knew that David's situation was far from hopeless. A large part of the nation were still true to him; he was surrounded by tried warriors, who were faithful to their king, and his army was commanded by able and experienced generals. Ahithophel knew that after the first burst of enthusiasm in favor of the new king, a reaction would come. Should the rebellion fail, Absalom might be able to secure a reconciliation with his father; then Ahithophel, as his chief counselor, would be held most guilty for the rebellion; upon him the heaviest punishment would fall. To prevent Absalom from retracing his steps, Ahithophel counseled him to an act that in the eyes of the whole nation would make reconciliation impossible. With hellish cunning this wily and unprincipled statesman urged Absalom to add the crime of incest to that of rebellion. In the sight of all Israel he was to take to himself his father's concubines, according to the custom of oriental nations, thus declaring that he succeeded to his father's throne. And Absalom carried out the vile suggestion. Thus was fulfilled the word of God to David by the prophet, “Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor.... For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.” 2 Samuel 12:11, 12. Not that God prompted these acts of wickedness, but because of David's sin He did not exercise His power to prevent them.
Ahithophel had been held in high esteem for his wisdom, but he was destitute of the enlightenment which comes from God. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10); and this, Ahithophel did not possess, or he could hardly have based the success of treason upon the crime of incest. Men of corrupt hearts plot wickedness, as if there were no overruling Providence to cross their designs; but “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.” Psalm 2:4. The Lord declares: “They would none of My counsel: they despised all My reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.” Proverbs 1:30-32.
Having succeeded in the plot for securing his own safety, Ahithophel urged upon Absalom the necessity of immediate action against David. “Let me now choose out twelve thousand men,” he said, “and I will arise and pursue after David this night: and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only: and I will bring back all the people unto thee.” This plan was approved by the king's counselors. Had it been followed, David would surely have been slain, unless the Lord had directly interposed to save him. But a wisdom higher than that of the renowned Ahithophel was directing events. “The Lord had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom.”
Hushai had not been called to the council, and he would not intrude himself unasked, lest suspicion should be drawn upon him as a spy; but after the assembly had dispersed, Absalom, who had a high regard for the judgment of his father's counselor, submitted to him the plan of Ahithophel. Hushai saw that if the proposed plan were followed, David would be lost. And he said, “The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time. For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place;” he argued that, if Absalom's forces should pursue David, they would not capture the king; and should they suffer a reverse, it would tend to dishearten them and work great harm to Absalom's cause. “For,” he said, “all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men.” And he suggested a plan attractive to a vain and selfish nature, fond of the show of power: “I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person. So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one. Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.
“And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” But there was one who was not deceived—one who clearly foresaw the result of this fatal mistake of Absalom's. Ahithophel knew that the cause of the rebels was lost. And he knew that whatever might be the fate of the prince, there was no hope for the counselor who had instigated his greatest crimes. Ahithophel had encouraged Absalom in rebellion; he had counseled him to the most abominable wickedness, to the dishonor of his father; he had advised the slaying of David and had planned its accomplishment; he had cut off the last possibility of his own reconciliation with the king; and now another was preferred before him, even by Absalom. Jealous, angry, and desperate, Ahithophel “gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died.” Such was the result of the wisdom of one, who, with all his high endowments, did not make God his counselor. Satan allures men with flattering promises, but in the end it will be found by every soul, that the “wages of sin is death.” Romans 6:23.
Hushai, not certain that his counsel would be followed by the fickle king, lost no time in warning David to escape beyond Jordan without delay. To the priests, who were to forward it by their sons, Hushai sent the message: “Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counseled. Now therefore ... lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.”
The young men were suspected and pursued, yet they succeeded in performing their perilous mission. David, spent with toil and grief after that first day of flight, received the message that he must cross the Jordan that night, for his son was seeking his life.
What were the feelings of the father and king, so cruelly wronged, in this terrible peril? “A mighty valiant man,” a man of war, a king, whose word was law, betrayed by his son whom he had loved and indulged and unwisely trusted, wronged and deserted by subjects bound to him by the strongest ties of honor and fealty—in what words did David pour out the feelings of his soul? In the hour of his darkest trial David's heart was stayed upon God, and he sang:
“Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! Many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. But Thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; My glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the Lord with my voice, And He heard me out of His holy hill. I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, That have set themselves against me round about.... Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: Thy blessing is upon Thy people.” Psalm 3:1-8.
David and all his company—warriors and statesmen, old men and youth, the women and the little children—in the darkness of night crossed the deep and swift-flowing river. “By the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan.”
David and his forces fell back to Mahanaim, which had been the royal seat of Ishbosheth. This was a strongly fortified city, surrounded by a mountainous district favorable for retreat in case of war. The country was well-provisioned, and the people were friendly to the cause of David. Here many adherents joined him, while wealthy tribesmen brought abundant gifts of provision, and other needed supplies.
Hushai's counsel had achieved its object, gaining for David opportunity for escape; but the rash and impetuous prince could not be long restrained, and he soon set out in pursuit of his father. “And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.” Absalom made Amasa, the son of David's sister Abigail, commander-in-chief of his forces. His army was large, but it was undisciplined and poorly prepared to cope with the tried soldiers of his father.
David divided his forces into three battalions under the command of Joab, Abishai, and Ittai the Gittite. It had been his purpose himself to lead his army in the field; but against this the officers of the army, the counselors, and the people vehemently protested. “Thou shalt not go forth,” they said: “for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou be ready to succour us out of the city. And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do.” 2 Samuel 18:3, 4, R.V.
From the walls of the city the long lines of the rebel army were in full view. The usurper was accompanied by a vast host, in comparison with which David's force seemed but a handful. But as the king looked upon the opposing forces, the thought uppermost in his mind was not of the crown and the kingdom, nor of his own life, that depended upon the wage of battle. The father's heart was filled with love and pity for his rebellious son. As the army filed out from the city gates David encouraged his faithful soldiers, bidding them go forth trusting that the God of Israel would give them the victory. But even here he could not repress his love for Absalom. As Joab, leading the first column, passed his king, the conqueror of a hundred battlefields stooped his proud head to hear the monarch's last message, as with trembling voice he said, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom.” And Abishai and Ittai received the same charge—“Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom.” But the king's solicitude, seeming to declare that Absalom was dearer to him than his kingdom, dearer even than the subjects faithful to his throne, only increased the indignation of the soldiers against the unnatural son.
The place of battle was a wood near the Jordan, in which the great numbers of Absalom's army were only a disadvantage to him. Among the thickets and marshes of the forest these undisciplined troops became confused and unmanageable. And “the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.” Absalom, seeing that the day was lost, had turned to flee, when his head was caught between the branches of a widespreading tree, and his mule going out from under him, he was left helplessly suspended, a prey to his enemies. In this condition he was found by a soldier, who, for fear of displeasing the king, spared Absalom, but reported to Joab what he had seen. Joab was restrained by no scruples. He had befriended Absalom, having twice secured his reconciliation with David, and the trust had been shamelessly betrayed. But for the advantages gained by Absalom through Joab's intercession, this rebellion, with all its horrors, could never have occurred. Now it was in Joab's power at one blow to destroy the instigator of all this evil. “And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom.... And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him.”
Thus perished the instigators of rebellion in Israel. Ahithophel had died by his own hand. The princely Absalom, whose glorious beauty had been the pride of Israel, had been cut down in the vigor of his youth, his dead body thrust into a pit, and covered with a heap of stones, in token of everlasting reproach. During his lifetime Absalom had reared for himself a costly monument in the king's dale, but the only memorial which marked his grave was that heap of stones in the wilderness.
The leader of the rebellion being slain, Joab by the sound of the trumpet recalled his army from the pursuit of the fleeing host, and messengers were at once dispatched to bear the tidings to the king.
The watchman upon the city wall, looking out toward the battlefield, discovered a man running alone. Soon a second came in sight. As the first drew nearer, the watchman said to the king, who was waiting beside the gate, “Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings. And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the Lord thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.” To the king's eager inquiry, “Is the young man Absalom safe?” Ahimaaz returned an evasive answer.
The second messenger came, crying, “Tidings, my lord the king: for the Lord hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.” Again from the father's lips came the absorbing question, “Is the young man Absalom safe?” Unable to conceal the heavy tidings, the herald answered, “The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.” It was enough. David questioned no further, but with bowed head he “went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom! my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!”
The victorious army, returning from the field, approached the city, their shouts of triumph awaking the echoes of the hills. But as they entered the city gate the shout died away, their banners drooped in their hands, and with downcast gaze they advanced more like those who had suffered defeat than like conquerors. For the king was not waiting to bid them welcome, but from the chamber above the gate his wailing cry was heard, “O my son Absalom! my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!”
“The victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people; for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son. And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.”
Joab was filled with indignation. God had given them reason for triumph and gladness; the greatest rebellion that had ever been known in Israel had been crushed; and yet this great victory was turned to mourning for him whose crime had cost the blood of thousands of brave men. The rude, blunt captain pushed his way into the presence of the king, and boldly said, “Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters; ... in that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well. Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the Lord, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that befell thee from thy youth until now.”
Harsh and even cruel as was the reproof to the heart-stricken king, David did not resent it. Seeing that his general was right, he went down to the gate, and with words of courage and commendation greeted his brave soldiers as they marched past him.

HAVE FAITH IN GOD Introduction - Faith in God is a vital aspect of our Christian walk. - The truth is that we all put our faith in something. - The question is where should our faith be placed and do we actually live our lives with faith in God? - I believe that the Lord is calling us back to a life of 'faith in God'! - Jude 1:20-21 'But you, beloved, keep building yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.' - Our faith in God is something very special, in fact the Bible calls it 'HOLY'. - We are instructed to build up ourselves in faith. - Our faith should be a focus point in our lives. - The question we should ask ourselves is: 'How much faith does it take to live your kind of Christian life?' 1. WHAT DO YOU PLACE YOUR FAITH IN? - I believe that God is calling us back to a new level of faith in Him. - I want to see a new wave of faith taking root in the lives of believers. - A faith that will cause us to trust the Lord for the fulfillment of His promises and that we would see wonderful things happen. - A faith in God that would replace all the other things we may have placed our faith in. - Here are some things we can place our faith in: - 1. FAITH IN THE PAST - We call this traditionalism. - 1 Peter 1:18 'Since you know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain manner of life received by tradition from your fathers.' - Sometimes we think that we can put our faith in the way things have always been done. - Perhaps we believe if we just do what our fathers did we will be ok. - The Bible calls this a 'vain manner of life'. - We should not place our faith in the past. - The past is no guarantee of the future. - 2. FAITH IN THINGS - We call this materialism. - The world places a very heavy emphasis on this aspect. - Years ago a popular singer sang a song that focused on this aspect. The words of the song went like this: 'Losing everything, is like the sun going down on me!' - Proverbs 11:18 'Evil people get rich for the moment, but the reward of the godly will last.' - Things may give us a lift for a moment, but that soon fades. - I remember one occasion in my life when I was fortunate enough to buy a new car. It was the first time this had happened and the smell was wonderful and I felt like a million dollars as I drove out of the showroom. I didn't want anyone to eat or drink anything in the car, in case they spilt something. But very soon the wonder of the new car faded and it simply became my means of transport. - Faith in things, or materialism, is something that is fickle and passing. - But faith in God brings a reward to the godly that will last. - 3. FAITH IN POSITION. - This is called influencialism. - This occurs because we believe that because of the position we hold, we will be able to influence any situation to our benefit. - For this reason many people clamour for positions and they are convinced that when they get there, their problems will be over. - Or we can believe that our connection to powerful and influential people will provide the answer we have been hoping for. - Psalm 146:3 'Don't put your confidence in powerful people; there is no help for you there.' (New Living Translation) - This scripture is sobering. - 4. FAITH IN RELIGION - Sometimes our faith can be more religion than relationship with God. - We then put our faith in religion. - We call this phariseism. - Luke 18:9 'Jesus also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves, thinking they were righteous, but who looked down on everyone else...' - Faith in religion brings death, but faith in God brings life. - 5. FAITH IN MAN - We call this humanism. - Jeremiah 17:5 This is what the Lord says: 'Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away form the Lord.' - This kind of faith has taken the world by storm. - Humanity becomes its own god and it thinks it is the solution to every issue and problem. - 6. FAITH IN REASON - We call this rationalism. - Proverbs 3:5 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding...' - Our own understanding or the understanding within the human race, is not something that can be depended on and it is not something we can put our faith in. - The Bible makes it very clear: 'lean not on your own understanding.' - The Bible also makes it very clear what we should do: 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart...' - That is where our faith should actually rest. 2. FAITH IN GOD OPENS THE DOOR TO POSSIBILITIES - Faith sweeps the believer out of the every-day, normal run-of-the-mill type of life into the supernatural! - Jesus said, 'WITH GOD all things are possible'. - Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, 'With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.' - He also said 'all things are possible TO HIM WHO BELIEVES'. - Mark 9:23 Jesus said, 'Everything is possible for one who believes.' - This means that through faith, all that is possible to God becomes equally possible to us. - Praise the Lord! 3. WHAT IS FAITH ACTUALLY? - In English we have two words: a noun, FAITH; a verb, TO BELIEVE. - In Greek we have 'pistis', FAITH and 'pisteuo', TO BELIEVE, both words having the same root 'pist'. - Therefore to have faith is to believe. - The Greek words formed from this root occur almost 600 times in the New Testament. - This many occurrences of this word obviously represent a theme that is central to the message of the Bible. - To have faith in God is to believe in God. - It means we do not have faith in all these other things, but we believe in God and His ability, power and final authority. - FAITH DEFINED: - Hebrews 11:1 says, 'Now faith is the SUBSTANCE of things hoped for, the EVIDENCE (conviction) of things not seen.' - 'SUBSTANCE' literally means, 'that which stands under or provides the basis for'. - For example, a title deed is the substance of ownership, it proves ownership. - 'EVIDENCE' is like a bank guaranteed cheque! - A proof of things not seen; a proof that there is cash in the bank. - In other words faith relates us to the invisible world - the world of the unseen. - Hebrews 11:3 'By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.' - Hebrews 11:27 'It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king's anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible.' 4. OUR FAITH CAN GROW - The Bible tells us that we have each received a measure of faith. - Romans 12:3 'God has dealt to every man the measure of faith.' - The Bible tells us that our faith can grow. - 2 Thessalonians 1:3 'We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.' - 1. LITTLE FAITH - Luke 12:28 'If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will He clothe you - you of little faith!' - 2. GREAT FAITH - Matthew 8:10 When Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those following Him, 'Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.' - 3. FULL OF FAITH - Acts 6:5 'They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.' - Our faith increases as we feed on the FOOD OF FAITH, which is the Word of God. - Romans 10:17 'So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' - The Bible also says that we can grow 'from faith to faith.' - Romans 1:17 'For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.' - God's ultimate plan for us is that we should live the LIFE OF FAITH. - Through meditation on God's Word our faith will grow. Meditate! 5. WE ARE CALLED TO LIVE A LIFE OF FAITH! - Faith is like an adventure or a trip in which we move from point "A" to point "B". - At point "A" we exercise our faith, possible by way of praying the 'prayer of faith'. - Our problem comes as we endeavour to move from that prayer of faith to point "B", the answer to the prayer. - How does one bridge this gap? - Well, the Bible is very clear on this point in that it clearly states that we must add to our faith 'ENDURANCE'. - Hebrews 6:12 '...follow the example of those who are going to inherit God's promises because of their faith and endurance.' (New Living Translation) - In other words once we have prayed the prayer of faith we must NOT give up on expecting the answer to be forthcoming. - Jesus is more interested in our faith lives than most of us realize. - Part of His current ministry is to assist us to move on to mature faith. - Hebrews 12:2 says that Jesus is the 'AUTHOR and the FINISHER of our faith.' - Imagine being personally taught by Jesus? 'Looking unto Jesus' is therefore the key to experiencing the 'finishing of our faith'. - Jesus, through His Word is the One who takes us from point "A" to point "B". - God's ultimate plan for us is that we should live a life of faith. - Six centuries before Christ, the prophet Habakkuk said, 'The righteous shall LIVE BY FAITH'. (This is one of the two occurrences of the word 'faith' in the Old Testament). - This statement of the prophet is quoted three times in the New Testament, in Romans 1:17, in Galatians 3:11 and in Hebrews 10:38. - It calls on us to cover every area of our living with faith. - Let us live a life of faith!
