I jokingly thought before that reading Junie B. Jones as a kid turned me into a feminist, but unironically, it kind of did.

I honestly think it comes down to the fact that Junie B. was not only allowed to be "weird," but her character arc never concluded like other girl characters would. In other media featuring "weird girls," the girl always ended her arc tamed - by force or convince, she would be prettied up, she would smile and be polite, and she would never speak out of turn. She would be perfect then, and would shed her veneer of individuality with the freedom that is conformity. As a kid, I noticed that girls weren't permitted to be "weird" like boys were. So when I read Junie B. Jones, I loved that she was frankly just fucking weird. She said things out of turn, she was rambunctious and imaginative and she was a realistic portrayal of a little girl. I loved reading those books because the narrative taught her lessons without punishing her for being weird, if that makes sense. So often, narratives punished weird girls for the crime of being a socially unacceptable girl, not for any true wrongdoing like lying.

Anyway, I just think it's interesting, because I watched and read a ton of books and shows and movies featuring girls and women, but none of them truly empathized with (or even tried to empathize with) weird girls on their own merits and capabilities and terms, or embraced the idea of a "socially inept/unacceptable" girl without punishing her in some way for her supposed ineptitude.

Well, that was a much bigger shitstorm than I had been expecting.

First of all, kid's ok, they just kept him over night because he's so young and concussions are a bit more of a risk, especially given his extensive medical history. Thankfully though, he seems to be on the mend, and he should be home by the time you Darlings are seeing this post.

As for why you're seeing this post, originally I was just meant to be playing emergency babysitter until the dad finished work and got home, but unfortunately he's just as big of a piece of shit as he usually is (Why they're still together and actively having more kids I have no idea) and decided that since someone was already with the kids, then instead of rushing home like he was asked to by his wife, he was going to make the best of it and go out drinking with his friends.

Both his wife and his elderly mother in law tried to contact him, but after the third set of calls, he turned off his phone. Not once did he ask who was with his kids, or how his injured son was, all he cared about was going out and drinking. (I sincerely hope she leaves his arse soon. Holy shit)

The mum did apologise to me repeatedly, but since their only living family is her elderly mother who is by no means capable of looking after five kids under the age of seven, she really didn't have a choice but to rely on me until her or her (shitty) husband could return home. And for obvious reasons, she couldn't exactly leave a four year old in the hospital by himself.

In the end, the "dad" didn't get home until about nine am this morning, stinking of grog, and I don't feel comfortable leaving them with him. I did quickly head back and grab a charger for my phone so that I could type this up, but since the youngest ones will be waking from their after feed nap soon, and the mum is still a way's off from getting back, I'm probably not going to have time to sort through my reblogs properly.

On a small positive note though, it does look like all my stuff is back now, so I should be able to go back to posting older reblogs tomorrow. For now, I'm just going to focus on the kids and then go back and crash into my own bed.

Lol I saw someone say that Mazey Day had no message. YOU'RE GONNA SAY THAT?? ABOUT THE MOST OBVIOUS ONE?? IN A POST PRINCESS DIANA'S DEATH WORLD? POST THE FREE BRITTANY MOVEMENT?

Even ignoring the paparazzi are demons and turning celebrities into objects to be objectified and commodified (which is a very common Black Mirror concept) is bad message, there is the more general throughline of the season that I think Mazey Day was heavy handed on.

Pairing the paparazzi commentary and the true crime commentary from Loch Henry, it's hard not to see what we are repeatedly told. They tell us directly several times that bad things sell more than positive things. Mazey Day was that times 1000, and planted into a supernatural take on our world (the spectacle of Mazey's transformation made worse by the paparazzi interference, honestly not a bad twist for such a message). The through line of bad things being of higher value was VERY strong this season. The direct question from the interviewer; why is Joan is Awful called Joan is Awful, why so negative? And the fake Netflix producer answers; because people find good things less believable, and negative shows make them transfixed in horror. Pia says to Davis in Loch Henry, the question is how could someone do something this awful? How could something like this happen? People have to watch to try to figure it out. She can't stop watching the tape of Davis' parents torturing their victims even when stopping earlier could have potentially saved her life. Mazey Day is the same concept, but more direct. Hector says several times how much a shot would be worth, and the prices get higher and higher depending on how horrific the situation is. And in the end, even after acting like she cared and was different than all the other paparazzi, Bo still takes the shot of Mazey as she kills herself. Even Mazey seems to accept this is what has to be done in her final moments.

I understand why people are having an aversion to the supernatural twist, although I personally really enjoyed it as like I said, it ratchets up the impact of the message. We get to see in gory glory the ruin these people have on Mazey's life, right away, whereas in real life it takes years of damage. Even Bo, who thought she was helping, doesn't know Mazey or her situation, which is instantly proven to us. Her interference resulted in all of the deaths that followed, and ultimately Mazey's. The "crackpot holistic medicine" doctor might have been able to help her. He had instilled some hope, saying they would take it one day at a time. If they had all left Mazey alone, this might have been able to happen.
