okay, bc i have seen this argument alot now (and it also seems to be the view point of aonuma himself..) is that "zelda cant do everything link does bc whats the point then"
and i take personal offense on that bc its a stupid argument (in. my. very. personal. opinion.- not judging people for liking it. its a ME thing)
whats the point? its that its her.
its still a different character, different in story, background, personality, but i WANT to play zelda and she can do everything link does, why does she have to be so restricted and be bend over backwards to find some new way to make her 'useful' when link gets to do basically everything no questions asked (the only thing thats hers is like .. sealing power and sacrificial maiden, which i find a little underwhelming to say the least), if theres no point to it why are there always modders that model swap link with someone else, and in that case it has even less impact bc its an artificial model swap with no changes to the story (which can and should still be different when its the vanilla game with a different protagonist... its still a different character), clearly theres joy in just the model being a different one- and that isnt even to mention the story possibilities, since, again, its stil a different character
if we ever (never ... i know who we are talking about here) get to play as ganondorf i want to him to be just as versatile and active as link is, if we got a point and click adventure game for him instead bc 'whats the point' id be disappointed too- you can find any sort of excuse/explanation for zelda to be singled out but the fact remains it tracks with how female characters are often treated, and that hits a very sore spot for me
i guess i am unfortunately one of those annoying people that want to see female characters be treated exactly the same as male characters, possibly bc i am myself afab but identify as agender and have a deeply personal dislike for anything 'traditional' feminine bc i cannot and never will be able to truly live as myself in real life, it influences all of my work, my work is as just as much as my opinion on this, very personal
and in line with my point about modding, i see theres joy in just beign able to play as her even if its like this, i get that, i also get it for the creative aspect (though that mechanic worries me even more for the future bc it really seems to be the path now that -freedom = good, linear anything = bad-) it is a different idea and its not like i cant see that value-
im not trying be "right" either, just bc i have that opinion doesnt mean i need everyone to agree, its a very personal thing, if you like it good for you! not for me though, and i think both of that is equally valid
i just personally wish she was allowed to be just like link, fight just like him but be different bc its still her and not him in the end- to be physically/playstyle like jsut like him, but you know ... as her, i dont think shed stop being zelda if she could wield a sword just like him
i dont really know how to get my point/feelings across, i dont want to step too much into personal stuff nor spam people with something that ultimately doesnt interest me alot, im just saddened by it really
(EDIT: bc i forgot to add this on here again; this isnt as much of a problem as it might sound like here, just the main topic i wanted to talk about; why im so uninterested in it is MAINLY bc i dont trust them to write anything interesting/care about lore anymore after totk, im always on the more pessimistic side that thinks its most likely worse than id hope and i know even the past games arent perfect or super interestingly written, but now its much more just a general distrust, together with everything like the price ... im just much less hopeful and cant get excited until i see more of it, like im waiting for the game to get out and reveal that its just as much of a mess and money i regret spending- kind of fear)

“What do you mean there’s still so much biphobia in fan spaces? Bisexuals are like some of the most popular characters!”
Yeah, and they either get treated like this:
Or like this:
“Biphobia isn’t real” neither are your braincells

do you ship helena bertinelli with anyone? if yes, then which characters and why? what's your favorite helena ship? do you have any helena rarepairs? (i know you've talked about helena/steph and you're so right about it, it's a very interesting ship)
!!!! i have so many ships for my best girl ever yes oh my god thank you for asking.
my top pairing is probably Vic Sage/the Question. Vic is the basic answer, but man. i love them so much. no couple has matched each other's freak like that have. Justice League Unlimited is a great adaptation of Helena in general, but it also did a great adaptation of Helena and Vic's relationship. how he just dedicates himself to helping her with no expected return, but also wants to make sure she doesn't go too far in a hunt for vengeance that never ends for her. i think a lot of characters often want to change Helena or expect things out of her for their own needs, like the Batfam and the BoP. but Vic is one of the few people who just wants her to be better for her own good. when he tries to stop her from killing it's not because of his morals, it's because he doesn't want this crusade to consume her. and i just. man i think about them a lot. Helena rlly likes weird little men who give themselves wholly to her.
Zinda Blake/Lady Blackhawk is also a top ship for me. tbh i just like Zinda. but i do love how Helena and Zinda interact, being the more rough and tumble members of the BoP. they're both outsiders, in different ways. Helena is an outsider of the Batfam and Zinda is literally from a different time and an outsider to the current world. their friendship is so genuine and i think if Babs and Dinah can have. whatever homoerotic nonsense going on during BoP, then Zinda and Helena deserve some homoerotic nonsense too. as a treat.
if we're willing to count New-52 Helena, then i enjoy Helena/Dick/Tiger. i think Helena and Dick being a past relationship is really important in pre-Flashpoint for Helena's development, though i don't ship them as a serious couple beyond a fling. but in the New-52, i think this throuple be fun. Helena and Tiger respect each other as two very driven, no-nonsense agents and then well. they both clearly have some kind of thing for Dick. so it's fun finding the balance of how they could all work together romantically.
and ofc. it's a crime to mention Helena ships and not mention Renee Montoya/the Question. every time they interact it's really fucking gay. it's so gay that Kate Kane, Renee's own ex, assumed Helena and Renee were gay. i cannot be convinced against this ship. i genuinely think this ship should be canon. i mean. DC did tease us with this moment from an alternate universe and it's lived rent for me since. fucking criminal for us to only get one panel of what we could have if DC let Helena be a fruit in the main universe. being in love with Helena Bertinelli should be a right of passage for the Question mantle, i personally believe. if you asked me like. genuinely who i want to see Helena date in the current comics, Renee is my top pick. (i would say Vic but he's fucking dead and the New-52 butchered him so rip my mans-)
lois lane (2019) #10
besides those ships, just about every ship for Helena probably falls into the category of rarepair. like you said i've talked about my love for Helena/Steph before bc god. i think it should be a thing more people ship. once i finish the fic i'm writing about them i will convince others to like it.
i also think Helena/Cass could be fun. in a *lot* of ways Helena and Cass are narrative parallels to each other. Helena was a victim of her family being murdered at about the same age Cass was forced to be a murderer. Helena grows up to believe in lethal justice because of this, and Cass grows up to be staunchly against it. Cass' Batgirl suit was made *by* Helena. they both want to be protectors of the most vulnerable people. they balance each other out in a lot of ways and i think they should kiss about it.
also probably a rarepair, i think Helena/Lady Shiva is fun. their fight during Birds of Prey (2010) had... questionable moments for Helena's characterization, but i do love so much that Helena knocks Shiva off her feet and gains a deep respect from Shiva. like. Shiva gives her a nickname and shows her admiration. i would like to see fanfic where Shiva continues to be weirdly admirable of Helena and bothering her non-stop. they could be a fun fucked up toxic yuri moment. this is just. so gay to me.
birds of prey (2010) #6
my most rare Helena pair would probably be Helena Wayne, actually. but specifically Helena Wayne of JSA (2022). ever since, for some reason, it was made canon that the current Helena Wayne was named after Helena Bertinelli and took the name Huntress to honor her i *cannot* stop thinking about them meeting. because in-universe it makes *no* fucking sense for Bruce to name his kid after *Helena Bertinelli*, someone he's regularly at odds with and doesn't like. it's clearly an awkward explanation to try to make the whole two Huntress situation make sense. (it's almost as bad as Helena Wayne in the New-52 using Helena Bertinelli as an alias.) but because it's such an odd choice, i do think it could be fun for Helena Wayne, when she's back in time to see Bruce, to find Helena Bertinelli to get to know the woman she was named after and Helena Bertinelli just being. baffled by the idea of *Batman* naming his kid after her. it could be a fun fucked up moment.
my other super rarepair is Kara Zor-L/Power Girl. they had like. one meaningful interaction of JSA Classified and it's been PLAGUING me. something about when Power Girl doesn't remember her past and she's seeking a friend, she instinctively goes to find Huntress? but it's wrong bc this isn't *her* Huntress and neither of them understand why Power Girl would seek Helena out? god it's so good. i'm always a big fan of ships where one person in the ship is *so* obviously using the other person as a replacement for someone they lost and they both know it. it's such a doomed angsty thing where you could play with Helena actually really liking Kara, but knowing that she's just a replacement for Kara's Helena Wayne. good fucked up shit man.
and lastly: i really ship her with Dawn Granger/Dove. there's no canon basis for this, they didn't have a ton of interactions even when they were both on the BoP. but there's a very kind innocence to Dawn that contrasts Helena's violence really well. and i do love a ship with a corruption kink vibe to it. let Helena corrupt Dawn. i could write such fucked up porn about these two.

As much as I agree that it would have been nice to see Charlie snap and rip and tear into somebody (particularly I wish she got a longer fight with Adam) I do not think her going after Valentino would be as good as people think
For starters the point of Charlie in Episode 4 is that she’s meant to make things worse because she doesn’t know the depth of Angels situation. She is breaking Angels boundaries by going to his place of work and talking to his boss, which even outside of the Valentino situation would be a major red flag since she’s doing it without his consent. However adding Valentino into the mix it becomes a worse problem because she, unintentionally, makes things worse for Angel with her meddling. A common problem where trying to interfere between an abuser and their victim will, in the end, only hurt the victim
The same thing goes for trying to confront the abuser on the victims behalf. Her attacking and threatening Valentino would not have made things better for Angel. Valentino would have just lashed out at Angel later or put him into dangerous situations during shoots. Because in the end, Angel’s soul belongs to him and at this time we don’t know if Charlie even has the power to break such deals. And even if she did have such power, her doing so without Angel’s permission would have also been a problem.
Story wise it would have been an incredibly terrible writing choice. Charlie coming in to play savior would have erased any agency Angel has over the situation, instead turning him into a prop to make her look good. He’d be less of a character for it, even if the story was rewritten to explore the aftermath of working for Valentino. Because Angels story about finding his own agency again and bettering himself is enhanced by the fact that it’s showing him breaking away from Valentino, hitting a high point where he stands up for himself, setting his own boundaries, at the club despite being aware of the consequences.
And even when Valentino hits back, Angel has his friends to fall back on. Husk and Cherri are there to be supportive, which is what Angel needs at that moment. In general, this is the best way to help victims of abuse. To be there for them and support them as much as you’re able to until they can break things off themselves. Trying to step in when they’re not ready might drive them further away, and even put them in more dangerous situations.
In the end, maybe the show will have somebody stepping in to be his savior. Given the way it has gone so far though, I do hope it comes about by Angel turning to his friends for help in leaving/breaking the contract. I think it would be a much more fitting way for the show to go, and tie in nicely to how Angel says in Episide 4 how he doesn’t need saving. Because Angel can handle himself, but he now has a support network he can turn to to back him up with just one word

i see some muns saying male OCs do get a lot of attention than females but man oh man in my personal experience i write a male OC of color, created a solo blog for him and he used to be a marvel OC(he’s now fandomless) and guess what only five to ten people interact with him.
newsflash: he’s not white and i use an obscure FC for him. he’s a filipino!

Controversial take but I geniunely feel fandom would be better with female characters if we stopped being so fixated on canon misogyny and just, treat female characters as characters than checks of good progressive writing™.
Because so often do we focus on whether or not these female characters are valid geniune representation of womenhood or just misogynistic characters. Female characters cannot just be poorly written, if they're poorly written that means their writing is misogynistic because to write a woman poorly means you're a misogynist.
And so, we focus so much on whether or not female characters are good portrayals of womenhood we stop treating them as characters. We don't think about their personality, backstory, role in the story, relationship with other characters (regadless of gender), thematic importance or ways these elements can be expanded on without taking into account how progressive and feminist these characters are. And this just takes away the fun from fandom. If you're looking at a character just as a progressive statement™ you don't think about them in any other way, and at worst are outright discouraged from using them in other ways.
Don't get me wrong, canon can be misogynistic in a way that turns people off. Many tropes are baked in misogyny or have misogynistic implications, which can be a huge turnoff for women, people raised as women and others. It is understandable if someone doesn't want to work with female characters because of canon.
But if we spend so much of our mental time and energy thinking about whether female characters have misogynistic writing, it really ruins our enjoyment of female characters. It turns female characters into labor rather than fun. And again, no one wants fandom to be like work. It is meant to be fun. So in order to have fun with female characters I think we all could benefit from not always thinking about feminist criteria and instead just, having fun and playing with these characters, expanding on their canon portrayal and thinking of fun possibilities with other characters. Just like people do with male characters.
But idk that's just my two cents.

Been thinking about Steve and Robin’s friendship so here’s every parallel they have with some form of Byler proof (mostly of Mike being queer-coded) that l can remember:
The scene of Robin rejecting Steve because she likes girls being framed similarly to a scene where Mike apologises to El in the same episode. This might be the show implying that Mike and El are better as a platonic relationship than a romantic one.
2. Steve tries to convince Robin that Vickie likes girls (or to be more specific, boobies) because she returned Fast Times paused at 53.05, which shows a shot of a character in a bikini played by Phoebe Cates.
But where have we heard of Phoebe Cates before?
3. Steve coming to the conclusion of Vickie liking girls based on an observation of her returned video tape, while Robin loses hope because Vickie has a boyfriend….paralleling us as an audience coming to the conclusion that Mike likes boys based on hints in the show that imply that, while Will thinks he has no chance because Mike is dating El.
BONUS!
Some Robin x Vickie parallels with Byler just for funsies-
