Royai Horoscope

A Roy and Riza Character and Relationship Analysis based on their Zodiac signs

Disclaimer: I am not suggesting horoscopes are scientific means of analyzing personality nor that it is accurate. This is just for fun!

Roy Mustang

Birthday: 06/01/1885 (on basis of Roy’s Day and his actual birthyear)

Zodiac Sign: Gemini - the Twins

Element Sign: Air

We may think he’s more suited in being a Fire sign, but if you take a closer look with how Roy creates fire, it all makes sense. Hiromu Arakawa shares in one omake that Roy creates fire by controlling the amount of oxygen in the air. I believe Flame Alchemy is based on the concept of control. We only notice the times Roy has lost control, but we fail to appreciate all the times he maintainted it. He’s not what he seems from the surface, and this is why we think he’s always not what he appears on the surface. Which leads us too conclude that he may appear two-faced.

Traits:

two-faced - like most Geminis, Roy tends to have a reputation of being two-faced. His personality depends on how others treat him, and how he views them. He loves to stir rumors and gossips, creating an impression that is completely different from who he actually is (E14, FMAB) (I’m making a more in-depth character analysis about this, but one that is based on psychology)

social chameleon - being the life of the party, Roy knows how to socialize with different types of people. He can easily read the room and know exactly what other people want to hear from him, as with most Geminis. This makes him extremely popular among townsfolk and political leaders.

flirtatious - and of course, Roy is popular with women, as stated by Team Mustang (FMA 03, E37). He’s naturally flirtatious, whether he does it on purpose or not. Like most Geminis, Roy jumps from one date to another. But we see him go to dates to collect information before tackling a conflict, another trait of Geminis. He asks Olivier for dinner as a disguise to relay information and planning (FMAB, E42-46 im not sure which one). Again, every action he does isn’t what it appears on the surface. And of course, he deliberately makes people believe he’s a womanizer. He shares his reason for being Führer was to let female officers wear miniskirts (FMA 03, E13), but later on we see it’s because he wanted to protect people (FMAB, E10). This leads us too concluding that he’s...

intelligent - most Geminis don’t appear to be smart at first, but when taken a closer look, they’re rather cunning and have remarkable wit. As seen with how he strategizes plans, Roy’s intellect is unquestionable. He even competes with Maes Hughes during their military academy days (FMAB Special E04). Aside from that, he is also emotionally intelligent, as in most Geminis. In another iconic scene, Roy immediately knows something is wrong upon talking to Riza on the phone (FMAB, E38)

optimistic - in general, Geminis are the kind of people who look forward to the future rather than attempting to change the past. Roy is actually optimistic. We never see him falter or mope around, he’s always the one who says “we can do better next time.” He tells Ed to stand up and have a chance on getting their bodies back rather than sulk about what had happened (FMAB, E2).

impulsive - due to Gemini’s adaptability and versatility, they never stay in one place. We see Roy move from one date to another and procrastinate on paperwork (FMA 03, E37). Riza frequently tells him not to be reckless, (FMAB E01, E05 - encounter with Scar, E19 - coming to the scene). When Roy had offered her flowers, he reasoned that he got “too drunk” and ended up buying a carload of flowers (FMAB, E38). Another one of his two-facedness. Although it was an excuse, Riza paid no attention to it. Maybe because she was that used to his impulsiveness lololololol. But we see this trait heighten when he was consumed with anger and vengeance on Envy (E53-54).

Riza Hawkeye

Birthday: 09/01/ 1887-1889 (based on Riza’s day and age range)

Zodiac Sign: Virgo - The Virgin

Element Sign: Earth

Earth signs are always grounded. We see how Riza always keeps her calm in situations (except when she thought Roy died lol). It’s no wonder how she holds Team Mustang together and keeps their sanity. Sometimes I wonder how she puts up with them lol.

Traits:

perfectionist - like in most Virgos, we see Riza always striving for the best. This is most evident in her specialty: accurate gunshots. When a military officer complimented her for striking the bull’s eye in the firing range, she told him “I still have a long way to go.” (FMA manga, Volume 6). Kimblee even taunts her, “Doesn’t it make you feel satisfied when you hit the target on one shot?”, whose words hit Riza like her own on-point bullets (FMAB, E30). In FMA 03, we see her blame herself for not being there on time. Roy replies by saying the world isn’t perfect, but that makes it beautiful (FMA 03, E51).

hardworking and organized - she gets things done stat. She does Roy’s paperwork and always reminds him to do them. Aside from that, she is very dedicated on work, she even delivers paperwork to the Führer’s residence late at night (FMAB, E37). Her dedication for work is most evident when she stood up all night while Roy was in a meeting in Central HQ (FMAB, E25). Other than that, she is obedient, she never fails to comply any order as long as it is within her morale. Even on the verge of death, she told the gold-toothed doctor she won’t die since she is “under strict orders not to die.” (FMAB, E58)

stubborn and uptight - in line with the previous trait, most Virgos are stubborn and uptight. Once they set their mind on a plan, they want it followed pronto! Roy even comments that Riza is stubborn (FMAB, E24) when she insists she will wait until Roy’s meeting is finished. Because of this, Riza may appear uptight. She bosses around Team Mustang, basically. For this reason, co-workers regard her as Roy’s babysitter (FMAB, E17). She tends to follow an everyday routine, as seen on how she and Black Hayate spends their mornings (FMA 03, E37).

reserved and untrusting - for some reason, we see Riza as reserved. I can’t pinpoint an exact moment where she’s shy, but I guess we assume she is because she rarely speaks. Riza isn’t an open book, and Virgos tend to have trouble trusting other people. This is evident since Riza holds the secrets of Flame Alchemy on her back. As an independent person, she may find it hard to rely on someone. It might have been hard for Riza to choose to trust Roy, and doing so might have caused a whole lot of consideration. That is, until she finally asks Roy, “Can I entrust you my father’s research?” Well, we see how much trust she gives to him since we never once saw her complain about anything— except with Roy.

honest - Riza is known to have a dry humor, and she never holds back on any comment she has. It’s seen on how she makes jokes with Rebecca Catalina (FMAB, E46). She’s blunt with her words— even calling Roy, her superior, an idiot or is useless (FMA 03 E15; FMAB E01, E05, E19, E53). She even asks Fuhrer Bradley a personal question, “Is that even called a family?” (FMAB, E42). Riza also declined Pride’s offer to join their forces, even in the face of threat (FMAB, E37).

patient and observant - aside from dealing with Team Mustang on a daily basis, her patience is very apparent on her character. In order to take a shot, she waits for the perfect timing. She’s also very observant, especially on the things Roy fail to communicate verbally. Whenever they visited Hughes’ grave, it was shown that Riza can sense Roy’s grief, and knows something is up (FMAB E10, E50)

intelligent - other than all the aforementioned reasons, we see Riza’s intelligence as she was able to count and remember the steps from Laboratory 5 to the door. And they figured out it was between the Fuhrer’s residence and Central HQ. (FMAB, E21). A more iconic scene was when she was able to figure out who Pride is (FMAB, E37).

kind - We see Riza as empathetic, especially to the young. She is in good terms with Winry (FMAB, E02; FMA Star of Milos) and Ed and Al (FMAB, E30). We see her voluntarily adopt Black Hayate (FMA 03, E13). Roy even admits it, “She may appear like that, but the Lieutenant is really kind.” (FMA manga, somewhere sksjskdjsks idk what volume)

Roy and Riza Compatibility

Both of them are polar opposites, like Roy is outgoing and Riza is shy. These might create conflict or it might also complement their flaws. Roy’s spontaneity helps with Riza’s rigidity. Just as Riza helps him stay on track with his work, Roy lets her lossen up a bit (FMAB E17-E19, where Riza is disguised as Elizabeth).

Riza’s critical untrusting judgement and Roy’s two-facedness may create conflict between them. Plus, Roy being easily bored might not work well with what Riza wants, which is routine and constancy. There might also be a problem with Roy’s flirtiness, which might ignite Riza’s doubtfulness.

Fortunately, they have both lessened these problems since they have laid their relationship on trust. Riza has entrused her back to Roy, along with the secrets of Flame Alchemy. Roy, on the other hand, has also entrusted his back to her (and his life, as she is free to take it if he will stray away from the right path). We see this on FMAB E54, when Riza stopped Roy from being consumed by revenge. In that scene, we also saw how Roy’s impulsiveness was balanced out by Riza’s strict compliance to rules and routine.

Aside from their differences, they also share many similarities. With their high emotional and intellectual compatibility, they entertain themselves in witty banters (well we often observe that). They share the same realistic attitude, and goals towards life (creating a better world even through a muddy path, FMAB E30).

They also share a negative trait of not being able to express their feelings easily. They may have trouble putting their feelings into words. Good thing they both learned to communicate nonverbally— and this is seen on another iconic moment when Riza’s glance saved them both from threat (FMAB, E54). After all, they’ve “known each other for quite some time.”

Are there any other popular fandoms like JoJo and AOT that you did not get into? Me personally, it was AOT and FMAB. AOT was justing meh to me, and while I enjoyed FMAB, I did not stay in the fandom for too long. I get flak from my friends for not being into such classics, but I personally do not care for them, and I feel like it should be fine to not like the same things as your friends.

LOOOOOOL oh my god yes, probably most of them and the timing on this ask is actually great because I just had a discussion about this kind of stuff with a great friend of mine the other day. Not specifically about popular anime/manga necessarily, but just how incredibly fucked up fandom culture and fandom mindset is anymore. The whole thing is fascinating and honestly just wild to me because I’ve never been able to relate to it. Like, just reading this and if you look it up on this blog, I’ve talked about Fullmetal Alchemist (both Brotherhood and the 2003). It’s one of my favorites of all time. It’s the only anime I’ve bothered to buy all the manga for and have the complete collection because I just loved it that much. Having someone come into my ask box and say they didn’t care for it, I feel absolutely nothing. Because there’s nothing wrong with that and it doesn’t matter to me at all?? Everyone is different, everyone will like different things and have differing opinions, so I don’t understand why so many people have taken on this really fucked up fandom mentality that they need to attack someone or make a big scene about things that don’t matter.

I can obviously only speak for myself about any of this and using my own experiences here, but just like when I was having that discussion with my close friend recently, we both noticed that the best and longest relationships we’ve had with people online are with people that aren’t super invested in fandom. We enjoy anime and movies, but I swear the absolute best and most down to earth people that I’ve grown attached to and consider important to my life are the people that are chill and relaxed and none of them have ever or would ever attack someone online over something stupid like anime or fictional characters. I’m going to throw this example out there because it fits really well with this topic: Not too long ago, this random chick I never knew existed made this big long callout post about me and put it in the main Gintama tag. In this post, she called me all kinds of things -- arrogant, selfish, narcissistic, and a bunch of other buzzwords.

Why? Because I’d deleted my fanfiction over two years ago and she wanted to publicly let me know I’m a horrible person for doing so. And then, in the same post amongst all these nasty things, she begs me to repost all my fanfiction. So, this is a piece of that ‘fandom mentality,’ but then you also have to add in the fact that she’d posted in a public Gintama discord group her intention to make this callout post and they all agreed that they should and encouraged her to do it. These people that I’d never met and that know absolutely nothing about me were saying things like, “Yeah you can tell a lot about a person when they delete their fanfiction.” And one of the people involved in wanting this callout post to happen was someone I’d spoken to before, had only been extremely nice and inclusive to, and on top of that she was still following me. I don’t know if it was to keep tabs on me or what, but the whole thing is just wild to me and I’m endlessly fascinated by this whole fandom culture mentality because I don’t understand it. If you don’t like me, that’s totally fine, I won’t hold that against you as it’s not a big deal to me. I’m confident and strong enough as a person to be able to withstand if some random stranger doesn’t like me, but if you don’t like me then lol why are you following me?

But what’s so fascinating about this callout culture is that these people legitimately think that ganging up on people they disagree with is good and they’re doing the world some kind of service by treating people like shit. Whereas for me, sitting where I’m at as the one that had been attacked, I’m so glad I was never part of anything like that. Calling people out over something as stupid as fanfiction? God, I can’t imagine. Some of my favorite artists had deleted their work due to reposting and do I miss it? Of course! I loved their talent and creativity, but more than anything, I respect their decision to look after themselves. It’s wild to me that some people don’t possess this really simple concept and get so involved in getting things for free and consuming all they can that they completely lose sight of reality. I could seriously go on and on about this subject because I’m being completely honest when I say it’s incredibly interesting to me. What’s also kind of hilarious about it is that the groups that go around attacking people rarely stick together. There was this phenomenal post on twitter that a friend sent me. Here’s the link to it, I highly suggest giving it a read and reading the comments too because the whole thing hits the nail on the head.

Anyway, all of this rambling has a point and that point is this: maybe you need better friends. I’m absolutely not saying they’re bad people or that there are good things about them that you enjoy because I’m definitely sure there are! But if they’re genuinely making you feel bad over something as stupid as “you don’t like this anime,” then find people in a better mental place to hang out with. I am not kidding when I say my best online friends that I’ve had for literal years and talk to every single day through discord or texting, they are extremely well adjusted and enjoy anime/writing/drawing casually. From experience I’ve found that the people super obsessed with anime, feel entitled to free stuff from writers/artists, talk trash about people in cliques, stalk people -- these are the ones you want to avoid at all costs because they may be your “friends” but if you do anything they consider to be “wrong,” their next target is going to be super easy because it’s going to be you.

I like that in this universe they actually acknowledge that hey comic books are a thing and this whole superheroes/villains/powers thing is kind of ridiculous bc it’s legit like playing out scenes straight from those comic books but also this is real life and it’s actually happening and really does pose a lot of danger and complications to a lot of people, so we’re going to treat it as something real and serious and affecting us

I might’ve spoken too soon but I really hope they don’t blow that mindset

I feel like too often superhero shows/movies just either completely gloss over the effects this stuff has on society as a whole, or it’s like a completely new thing for them, like there’s never been the concept of a fictional superhero or a comic book there before.

ok i wasn’t that mad about kamui being upstaged (idk why I kinda like the guy) but now she’s acting a little too cocky for me and I feel kind of bad for Death Arms and Backdraft (?) because they definitely do deserve at least a little credit

yes. official. overseen by the government. I’m not saying it’s necessarily a good idea bc I’m not getting into the whole mess the MCU basically did regarding that, but it really does add to the worldbuilding and making it seem more realistic/draw you in a little more because you can bet that would be a thing that would actually happen in some capacity if such a large percentage of the population had superpowers, and crime was at an all-time high at the same time, with normal methods without powers likely not doing much to combat that, and it being even harder because everyone’s is different

3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)

Dear Lord, there are so many, but if I had to pick one...

There’s this post-canon FMAB fic called Original Sin that I’ve been yelling about for about two years now. Like, I really want to write this scene where Roy and Riza finally get together the night before Riza believes they’re going to be arrested for war crimes. However, the legislation Roy signed into law has a loophole that protects Riza. So while Riza expects to be punished for Ishval, Roy never intends on letting her take any blame, but he doesn’t tell her that until officers arrive the next morning and only arrest him. Heartbreaking stuff, I think.

But the work I’d have to put into the fic (researching the Nuremberg trials, drafting a mock law and gaining more confidence when writing smut) is intimidating. Plus, the fandom has been slowly going inactive, especially for writers who don’t have a large following. A few years ago, I could clear almost 100 kudos on a one-shot. Now, I’m lucky to get 20 kudos on a chapter fic, and while it’s not all about kudos, validation feels good. I don’t have a lot of free time, so I have to pick and choose what I write these days.

5. What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?

I recently wrote Momo Yaoyorozu in The Favor, and I identified with her a lot. I’m the type of person who (I’m told) doesn't often come across as insecure, but privately, I’m such a worrywart. I get nervous about almost everything. The people who know me best tell me constantly not to assume the worst, but I always do. And I have the bad habit of using other people as a measuring stick for my success, which I really, really should not do.

I often think about the confident Momo Yaoyorozu we saw in the first episodes of BNHA. As class 1-A got to know Momo, we learned that she’s not as confident as she seems, and she even undervalues the things she’s undeniably good at. That spoke to me. And I’d so like to tell Momo that one day she’ll have perfect confidence, but realistically confidence is something I work on constantly. For me, it's more an exercise of surrounding myself with people who sustain and support me. Luckily, Momo is fictional. I think it’ll work out better for her.

16. Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)

Get this: I’m applying to zines.

In the past, I’ve been a little anti-zine, unfairly so. Don't get me wrong; I buy zines. I think the fair use case law needs an overhaul. The existing analysis in those cases is a little reductive, and some of the resulting decisions are shady. However, my overall vision for fanfiction includes a free, accessible space where content creators and consumers can connect and share stories without gatekeeping. (So basically AO3.)

But when my view count started diminishing, I decided to try something new. I went outside of my comfort zone and applied for a zine. I didn’t think I’d get in, but I did. So far, my experiences have been extremely positive!

Writing without sharing is an exercise in patience, but getting to collaborate with artists and seeing an amazing product come together makes the wait worthwhile. I especially like working with zines that donate their profits to charity and meeting people I’d seen on AO3 but hadn’t approached. I shouldn't have waited so long to get my name out there, but all I can do now is learn from that mistake and try harder in the future.

1. who’s one of your favorite characters and why?

currently, since i’m reading the raven cycle, it’s gansey. honestly i love all the characters bcuz maggie is so fucking good at writing them. even the villians. and the gray man! fuck don’t even get me started on morally gray characters. going into the books i thought i would like ronan or adam the best just bcuz you raved about them a lot and usually those are the character i tend to love and i still very much love them but gansey man. he took me by surprise.

he just has so much of my aesthetics. like he has a fucking mint plant bcuz he likes mint and somehow always unlimited mint leaves in his pockets for whenever feels like minty freshness. he was wire frame glasses. he lives in an old factory. he adds to his miniature model town when he can’t sleep. he has journals. and likes the fucking beatles!! he drives a broken down piece of garbage that’s probably held together by duck tape and he knows it and loves it. he is an old soul! he is an Intellectual™. but also Clueless™. he is such a fucking dad friend. always going “lynch” “parrish” jane”. and he’s so wholesome and such a good and caring friend and it kills him inside when he can’t help his friends and oh god oh god please help me i love him

2. last book you read – what did you think of it?

I finished the hate u give by angie thomas a couple of days ago and I absolutely loved it. it focuses on police brutality and racism also touches on various different topics like drug abuse, gangs, abuse, different views on interracial couples, etc. It was an incredibly powerful and impactful book. It was kind of hard for me to read bcuz generally, I read books to get away from the world we live in and this was very much the reality of the world we live in. the injustice of it. and angie writes it in a way that it is unapologetically honest. but it is so so important. I wrote a full review here on my book blog but it’s a spoiler-y so beware.

also I’m so excited to see amandla stenberg play starr. I’m gonna have to wait a few months to watch it (bcuz there are no frickin theatres here) but still... I know it’s gonna be great.

3. do you consider yourself a good decision maker?

these three words do not belong together i really can’t say... maybe 72% of the time i am? yup that seems pretty accurate

4. preferred studying method?

pfffffftttt method? what method? i tend to study at my desk to avoid falling asleep. and i listen to lofi hip hop or jazz. and i usually study in 3 hour intervals bcuz i have trouble focusing for longer periods of time and have to take breaks. is that what you meant?

5. favorite word from your native language?

I don’t necessarily have a favorite word... but when I learned my Spanish alphabet I would like to say the letter ‘y’ over and over again because it was fun to pronounce. It’s pronounced ~ i griega ~ which is really fun to say. I just really love Spanish and rollng my ‘r’s.

6. do you have a problematic character you’d die for?

7. is there something you felt like you’d never be good at, but are somewhat decent at doing now?

I feel like my social skills have improved a shit ton. I used to not be able to speak to people without stuttering a lot or while holding eye contact for longer than 5 seconds. I used to not be able to order food for myself. And now I can interact with people better and I pick up on social cues better. And I smile at people I don’t know when I’m happy bcuz I feel like it and I like to spread positivity. things like this may seem small to other people but it’s not small for me. I think I’ve come a long way and I’m incredibly proud of myself for all of it.

8. what’s your general temperament like?

i’m either mellow and chill or wild and weird. there is no in-between.

9. something you want to get better at?

my mentality. in general really. but something i’ve been struggling with a lot recently is not being able to not do anything. i love having lazy days i do. they allow me to relax and take a break from things that have been stressing me out. but the next day when I get back into it and start to get things done... I put myself down about taking a day off. about wasting time when i could’ve gotten so much done. this mentality is such a toxic one and I hate that I have it. I hate that I always have to be productive to consider myself useful. I hate that I can’t relax and enjoy myself anymore without my brain going into overdrive to tell me how much of a fucking waste of oxygen I am. I was very near to tears a couple of days ago because I took a few hours off of schoolwork bcuz I had a migraine and the whole time my brain wouldn’t shut up you’re wasting time you could be done with so many assignments by now you could be doing useful things right now you don’t know how to do jack shit why the fuck are you even in school if you’re not going to study why is mom spending valuable money on your education when you can’t fucking stick to your fucking schedule fuck

i hate that i have that mentality. and i would just like it to kindly fuck off.

10. something popular everyone else likes but you don’t?

fuck... ummmmmmm... i think it’d be easier for me to tell you something i like that is underrated or unknown...

oh! um ferris beuller? that john hughes movie with matthew broderick. i mean, i like the movie, i just don’t love it like everyone seems to. it’s a nice light movie about teenagers skipping school and having fun. but i don’t like ferris bcuz he comes off as a sort of douche. escpecially towards his friend cameron, who very clearly has mental health issues that ferris tends to brush off quite a lot. so i don’t really understand why people rave about it so much.

11. before consuming books/movies, do you read reviews, or do you like going in blind?

I, for the most part, go in blind. I have a tendency to put things on my list, to eventually watch/read, because I hear good things about them or I myself just would like to consume the content, but a never get to it immediately. I get to it months later, sometimes a year or two later, when I’ve more often than not forgotten all about anything I’ve heard about it. but even then, I don’t generally read reviews because I don’t really care what other people think of it. The only people’s opinions I care about are my friends and family because I like to discuss the content I consume with people close to me. Especially if I feel strongly about said content. so, no, i don’t seek out reviews. it’s usually that i happen upon reviews and them i’m like ‘good to know i guess?’ i don’t rely on critics cuz critics sometimes don’t know what Good Content is

The Funeral Room, once blank, was now bursting with different colors. I didn’t think Kokichi would have the finse to write out a plan like this.

“Yeah, I totally stole this idea from FMAB! We shouldn’t take any chances! Knowing Junko, if she’s anything like what I’ve learned from the games, she’ll pull some backhanded twist to allow herself to view this room,” Kokichi explained as we first began the plan, “Plus I like to think of him as my sugar~” Before I got the chance to ask what ‘FMAB’ was, he was rattling off key codes for me to remember. The main people in our plan, those we’re hoping to last the longest, are the typical base ingredients of cake. The topping were the extras, or rather, people we were unsure we could trust. There were flavorings, too, and all of this was becoming a bit overwhelming. But I understood Kokichi’s reasoning clearly; we couldn’t let Junko have the slightest chance of figuring out this plan.

We pushed the bed from its original position to cover the corner entrance. This was to make sure no one could inadvertently come through. And, well, I was a bit anxious. The memories of last time were still screaming at me, though, Kokichi’s words were louder than them.

We were sitting on the bed, scanning over the written words on each whiteboard. I estimated about a day had passed since we got up here. It would really help if they had a clock here, but I guess, they’re already giving us an edge by letting us plot.

“Now, with all of our planning done, I want to pick your brain a bit. About me and you. I don’t want this to all be wasted space in some room, ya’know,” Kokichi said, leaning his head on my shoulder, “We need a strategy to supplement this plan.”

“Right...I want to believe people would believe you about the killing game, but once your personality becomes full set, there’s no clue what’ll be the truth or a lie coming from you,” I said, pondering as a placed my hand underneath my chin. I rested that arm on my knee, thinking of how to get things organized properly. From the debriefing I received before coming in the stadium, I’d get one clue and the full map of the killing game territory. Those I wanted to keep secret for now, and if plans required use of them, I should be as vague as possible with Kokichi. Kokichi was an ally to me, but the perks I gained from surviving last cycle were my own. I had to keep that request of hers if all else fails.

“And, on top of that, you’re going to have some memory issues still. Your full memory won’t be unlocked until you figure out your talent again, right?” Kokichi added, his arms wrapping around my me. I hadn’t realized his body had already invaded my personal space and likely wasn’t moving an inch from here. But, as long as we were productive, I didn’t mind much of what Kokichi had been doing. In a strange way, it reminded me of my youngest sister with how he had been acting.

“Yeah, right,” I replied, curving my head to view the first section of our plan. Or, in our code, the first ingredients in our recipe:

One Donut

One litre of Fanta

One pound of flour

One pound of Sugar

“How about we make flour and Sugar become friends with our Donut early on? That way, when they realize- - ” I started to explain, but Kokichi pressed his head in my chest.

“No! Flour is a cunt. I already don’t like her from training. I think I prefer taking a ‘good cop bad cop’ stance on this. I’ll be the object of disgust for everyone, follow my scripted character, but then also break out of character when needed. You can be the nice voice of reason that gradually turns everyone to pay attention to my words,” Kokichi suggested. But could he really break out of character once we enter the domain of the game? Even with how my cycle went, no one broke character. No matter how much people didn’t want to play their characters, once the game engine shut on, there was no turning back. Kokichi likely wasn’t an exception of the 27 other top candidates they have scouted thus far.

“I don’t think good cop bad cop would work. Remember, you’re only able to break out of character now because we’re outside the domain of the game. Once we’re in the domain of the game, you’ll be stuck to your personality to a tee,” I explained. I watched as Kokichi’s face turned sour, looking down as the shadows from his har obscured his face.

“I can break out of it, ya’know? That’s why I’ve been so dedicated to mastering my character now. You have to believe in me if this is going to work, Rantaro,” Kokichi said, pressing his face into my chest. When I tried to pluck him out, his arms wrapped tighter around me. I wondered why Kokichi was being especially close to me as of late? Had Kokichi and Shuichi really been close lovers before all of this, and he had been missing that feeling of closeness?

“What do I have to do to gain your trust? How can I earn it? I need it, everyone in the world needs it,” Kokichi mumbled into my chest, his fist gripping at the fabric of my shirt, “I’m special. You told me that. You told me I’ll remember everything but I’ll be reduced to a liar. But, just because I lie a lot, doesn’t mean every statement I’ll say is a lie.” Wait, what was Kokichi getting at? The game was purposely designed thus far to have Kokichi as the cornerstone to assist the protagonists with the class trials. In addition, much like Nagito and Togami, Kokichi will irritate the protagonists to a variety of emotional levels. That included having Kokichi tell frequent lies of varying intensity.

“I mean, almost everything out of your mouth will be a lie, Kokichi, we need to come to terms to that first. Then--”

“I did not get fucked by Shuichi.”

“This isn’t the t---”

“I didn’t get fucked by Shuichi. Just kidding, that’s a lie! See? I can lie but still tell the truth in a roundabout way. If I get an urge to lie but know the truth, I can use that setup. You see? OR,” Kokichi said, his face poking out of my chest with a grin, “I didn’t get fucked by Shuichi. But if I did, I’d be--”

“Ok, Ok, whatever, I believe you. It’s not like we can test things before the fact. But I still want to be able to verify that I’m talking to you and not your character you somehow,” I replied before Kokichi said some more ‘experimental lies’. A scarlet blush consumed my face as I looked down at him this time. I had to stop him before he got off track again.

“Like, a test phrase or whatever? Do you think you’ll be in the right mindset to even gauge my answer for it? Seriously, you need to find your research room first. After that, when your memories come back fully, we should be able to collaborate. Since we’re not sure what memories you’ll have, the main focus is for you to find your room. Leave the dirty work to me,” Kokichi said with a grin, pushing his head up to kiss my cheek. I let out an awkward laugh, shaking my head at him. Even with everything we’ve been put through, Kokichi still found new ways to deter me from our current blight. Just like my younger sister. Or am I using him as a placeholder for her at this point? I’m not really sure...but Kokichi has a good point. My research room should help jog my memory. My survivors perks should assist me in finding that. No need to get Kokichi involved in that section of the plan.

“Even then, Junko will probably put my research room somewhere not easily reached. I wouldn’t put it past her to unveil my room last or close to that. It’ll probably be the same for yours,” I explained, “Especially since we’re following a script similar to the 1st and 2nd games. One of us needs to survive until the end, or at the very least, help the best we can to end the killing game in session. Our best hope for that will be the 1st class trial, if the format will stay the same as Junko has planned it to be. Junko plans on combining the elements of the last trial in the first game with the ending for the 2nd game.”

“So you’re saying it’ll be one of those ‘revealing the truth’ to the killing game events like the 1st and 2nd games? That means Junko plans on…” “Yep. If no one dies quick enough to her liking for the first round of things,” I said, securely wrapping my arms around Kokichi, “Junko’ll kill someone herself. That’s where discussions were leaning toward as we got closer to the 1st audition day. If we’re able to catch the mastermind early on that way, then the whole killing game will be a wash. Two failures for killing games in a row should discourage demand and overall interest within the fanbase.” I leaned in a bit, bowing my head to feel Kokichi’s neck along mine. Burying himself closer into me, my blush felt hot. I think I understand why Kokichi likes this closeness now. The warmth of his body helped with starving off the old memories of cycles past. Kokichi leaned into my touch, his head placing itself alongside mine on my shoulder.

“It’s likely to be one of the protagonists right? If it’s Shuichi…” Kokichi trailed off, his voice not wanting to finish the sentence. His arms held me tight. His hands gripped at my shirt still, reminiscent of how my sister would do that when she got really emotional over things. Though, I knew Kokichi’s grip wasn’t as pure as that. Especially since he had previously referred to my...lower region as a food condiment.

“We don’t need to think that far out. We just need to ensure we corner and conquer the mastermind. If someone ends up dying as a result of things, I know a failsafe we can visit once survivors fully exit the game domain. I only know of it because, well, I’d rather not get into it,” I said, nuzzling the side of Kokichi’s head. Kokichi’s body curled up close to my own, his head cradled by my shoulder and head as he seemed to drift off. Kokichi deserved to sleep some of the stress. I’ll do the thinking for now while he rested. I hadn’t known much for the intimate love Shuichi and Kokichi shared, but, I did know how to best comfort my sisters. That’ll have to do for now, Kokichi.

1. What superpower would you choose? The ability to stop time, so I can catch up with the million things I wish I’d done by now, like being up to date with all the shows I want to watch, get in good shape, learn a lot of things and read a lot of books.

2. What is the first story in any media that just blew you away? I’m not sure since I’ve been watching TV shows since childhood. I’m thinking probably the revelation of Future Trunks in DBZ. But a story as a whole... almost any anime or show I’ve seen tbh, I’m easily pleased when it comes to fiction.

3. If you had a bag of cash to give away to a charity/cause, who would you give it to? Definitely an animal protection cause, but absolutely not PETA.

4. Who would you want to introduce to your favourite fandom and why? I’ve been trying to get my best friend to watch FMAB (she watched ‘03) for years and she keeps saying she will but doesn’t do it. Also my sister who watched ‘03 too but she hasn’t cared about anime for years now.

5. Do you like your middle name? I don’t have one.

6. If you could live in another country for a year, which country would you live in? Japan.

7. Why that country? I’m definitely going for vacations/tourism one day and I just don’t think a couple months would be enough to get to know/do everything I want to there.

8. What is your ‘art form?’ ie. are you a writer/artist/editor/singer/a little mix of both? I’m a writer, but I tried other artistic things too. I wrote some songs (just the lyrics, I can’t play any instruments), I took singing classes for two years, I’m passionate about dancing, I enjoy photography and editing videos, but that’s a little less art and a little more technical knowledge.

9. In relation to the above question, what is something you’re proud of or find is one of your strengths in your talent? About my writing, I like to think that my dialogues sound very natural, and that I’m decent good at descriptions.

10. If you had to lose a sense or a limb, which would it be? My sense of taste. I’d just eat healthily and never get tempted to consume any sugar or unnecessary stuff that is no good for the body ^^ 11. If you could sit down face to face with someone and just rave on about a mutual fandom, who would it be? That’d be @angel-with-a-pipette. Maybe one day it’ll happen :)

Why did you drop Fullmetal Alchemist after that episode?

Spoiler rant ahead (for both the 2003 and 2009 series).

I’ll preface by saying I have seen the original animé series and enjoyed it - even up to and including the ending, which is a major reason why I held off on watching Brotherhood for so long since I was largely satisfied with the conclusion I got.

That being said, watching AMVs over the years did make me curious about the “alternate/official takes”, as it were - in particular the scene of crying Winry holding a gun and Ed comforting her since it was featured so often. So it was one of the “big scenes” I was looking forward to when my friend finally convinced me to (re)watch the series with him (it being his second viewing).

Once it was revealed Scar was the one who killed Winry’s parents instead of Roy, I knew the above had to be a result of the inevitable confrontation over it, and was eagerly anticipating said meeting and the explanation as to why Scar killed them. Surely, with everyone so vocally supportive of FMAB, their deaths must be even more intense and heartbreaking than the original! …Right?

And so what was the reason for their deaths?

…

Because their eyes were blue.

That’s it.

If that’s not the dumbest, table-flipping excuse enough to kill someone, I don’t know what is.

But let me clarify by backing up a bit: It wasn’t Winry’s breakdown scene specifically that made me want to drop the series. It was everything building up to it within the episode itself that just made me… so apathetic that I couldn’t even be bothered to care.

Maybe it’s just me, but I had a very visceral reaction to just how… cliché the presentation of the Ishvalan War was. Of course the Amestrian soldiers were seen as blue-eyed devils who relished in massacring women and children! Because look! Racism and violence = bad! No shit Sherlock.

Of course, I know these are still real-world issues that need to be addressed, but I’m just getting a little tired of relying on the trope in fiction to signal who the “bad guys” are, is all. Perhaps it’s bc I saw Wonder Woman recently, which handled these subjects in a much more unbiased and mature manner (if not exactly perfect either). There’s grace to be had in subtlety.

And that’s a problem I have with the presentation of the story in general. A lot of its messages I feel I’m being beaten over the head with. Perhaps the animators are partially at fault, I haven’t read the manga so I can’t compare how heavy-handed Scar’s backstory was there. And yes, I’m now aware of the later twist that Envy was the one behind starting the war, but I can’t say I’m a big fan of that development either for the very fact he felt the need to monologue about it, complete with maniacal villain laughter. To boil things down to even further “black and white” left a horribly bad taste in my mouth. (Another reason I prefer the Homunculi of the original.)

The whole thing made me absolutely loathe Scar’s character in this version for how hypocritical he was being. And I thought, maybe he’d redeem himself a bit by the end when Winry calls him out and he realizes the error of his ways - but no, he is entirely unrepentant. Yes, I know they later have another heart-to-heart and sorta settle their differences and he eventually becomes their ally, but the fact he was so stubborn in the first place doesn’t endear me to him. I know people’s minds don’t change so easily, but for God’s sakes those doctors saved your life. Even if you slaughtered them in a fit of rage and confusion, shouldn’t you feel some remorse when their grief-stricken daughter is staring you right in the face?

And from Winry’s side, I vastly preferred her emotional conflict over finding out Roy was responsible for her parents’ deaths in the original and having to come to terms with that knowledge. Roy’s reasons for killing them were much more complex and compelling IMO, to the point he was so tortured by guilt he was nearly driven to suicide by it. Scar’s arc in Brotherhood just doesn’t compare.

The writing of that singular episode made me so mad I refused to watch any more episodes for a while, since it effectively killed any excitement I had up to that point. I was also afraid that other future “spoilers” i had been looking forward to would similarly be disappointing after all the hype. I only resumed after a month-long hiatus when I saw another friend was also rewatching the series and singing praises for it. By that time my anger had died down and I could at least stomache to continue.

All that said, I am enjoying the series now, especially upon learning more of Hoenheim’s history. (I’m really just here for Hoendorkdad interactions with his sons. *shot* Plus I’ve found a new motivation in making MCA comparison posts.) Unlike the whole “Red Eyes good Blue Eyes bad” debacle, the revelation that Ed and Al were descendants of the ruined country Xerxes, as indicated by their golden hair and eyes, was a good example of clever storytelling and world-building. It was a nicely slipped in detail that wasn’t hamfistedly called attention to; I hadn’t even noticed it until my friend pointed it out. …Although it’s still later deliberately spelled out anyway. But whatever. Point still counts.

Still, it was hard getting there after Scar’s backstory ep, since suffice to say it left a permanent “scar” on my viewing experience no matter how good the rest of the show may be. Anytime the Ishvalan War was brought up thereafter and the vices of “prejudice” stressed it reminded me of how I just wanted to gag myself with a spoon during that episode, and tried to speed past that part of the plot as quickly as possible lest it sour the overall score further. I mean, when you spend half the entire episode bored/sick of it and just wishing for it to end, that’s a warning sign.

I may be looking at the original with rose-tinted glasses (it’s been a while since I saw it as well), but the thing is, I’m starting to recognize that FMA (both the original and Brotherhood) is, in essence, very much a baby’s first shounen/animé, constantly hammering its morals in for the kids at home. And as far as introductory series to the genre go, it’s good! Great even. I just… kinda wish I hadn’t waited so long to see the universally lauded “sibling series” when regardless of whether I had seen the original first or not, I probably would’ve enjoyed Brotherhood a lot more had I watched it when I was younger and not after I’ve consumed a ton more media since then.
