How to Improve HOTD S2

This is truly just me feeling frustrated with the second season and screaming into the void. Feel free to ignore it I wrote it at 10pm in a hater spiral and probably have some information wrong

1. Shift away from the Alicent vs Rhaenyra thing and highlight Aegon vs Rhaenyra. It would be hard when zero relationship had been established in season 1 but after Jaehaerys’s murder it would have been SOOO easy to shift the focus of Team Green on to Aegon and make him really want to take Nyra down.

2. Speaking of Nyra I’m begging them to give her some agency. Her son was MURDERED. She spent TEN DAYS SEARCHING FOR HIS BODY. She should’ve been ready and raring to go to war at the end of episode one!! She should be doing everything she can to destroy those who took her baby boy from her!! Instead they had her crying about going to war and no one taking her seriously for 5 episodes. Let her be morally grey I’m begging you she is not a saint nor should she be

3. Introduce Ulf and Hugh WHEN they claimed their dragons. No one cares about their lives yet. Regular viewers don’t know who they are. They can talk backstory once you’ve shown why they’re important

4. While we’re introducing characters GIVE US SOME TIME WITH DAERON. Non book readers have no idea who he is. Establishing his place in Oldtown, the fact that he has a dragon, the dichotomy between himself and his brothers all would have been GREAT to see before they started throwing his name around.

5. More screentime for the younger generation! Helaena lost so much of her arc due to them removing her fall into madness (which I’m not mad at btw) but showing her grief would’ve still been nice. Baela is ride or die for house targaryen and that’s about all we’ve seen from her, plz give my girl some agency. Rhaena is angry about being cast aside and that’s got so much meat for character motivations but EVEN THE WRITERS ARE IGNORING HER AND GIVING HER ONE 30 SECOND SCENE EVERY OTHER EPISODE. Jace is also being done dirty, they should be establishing reasons why we should care about him and why he’s such a good heir before the battle of the gullet (which in an ideal world would’ve been where we ended season 2 but).

6. ENOUGH WITH THE HARRENHAL ARC!! The first few scenes were fine but now it’s just repetitive. Daemon wanting to be king in his own right came out of nowhere and will have zero consequences when we all know Nyra is just going to take him back when he’s done pouting. He’s literally just wandering around Harrenhal like a freak. That arc needed 3 episodes at the absolute max to establish the castle and Alys and the river lords and then he should’ve come back. I hate him but they’re wasting his character.

7. Aemond turning into a super villain?? After we established he regretted what he did to Luke?? Trying to take out his own brother for power is fine and I support you if that’s what you want king but maybe give us some more context other than “brother bullies you in front of his friends”?? Maybe my sister was just mean but that’s an average sibling experience as far as I’m concerned. It would have made more sense with the characterization they had already given him if Aemond had been given no choice but to burn Aegon in order to save him and take out Rhaneys and Meleys. The 180 into anime villain felt way too abrupt (like dany going mad sorry)

8. Alicent and Cole………… as much as I fly the Alicent is gay flag it could’ve made sense if they didn’t just immediately beat us over the head with it. We were immediately thrown in the deep end of them having a sexual relationship with zero context other than “everything you feel for me… as your queen” PERHAPS GIVE US SOMETHING MORE. I actually would have loved Alicent reclaiming her sexuality after 20+ years of having to fuck her rotting old husband but they went about it the wrong way.

9. Speaking of Alicent, I feel like they truly do not know what to do with Alicent. They took away every ounce of agency she could have had in order to make her a victim and now they don’t have anything for her to do. They just keep taking everything from her in a way that just shoves her character in a box while also trying to maintain her as one of the main characters?? It’s just all very odd to me

10. In that same vein, I feel like they don’t really know what to do with ANYONE honestly. Game of Thrones also had a big cast following multiple locations but somehow juggling between them all felt much cleaner than it does here. It’s as if they lose track of their characters and forget about them so they throw in a quick 30 second scene to be like “btw they’re still here!!”

11. I need more character interactions. Aegon/Helaena. Daemon with his children. Just people you expect to have some kind of relationship. I don’t think any of those characters have ever actually had a significant interaction with each other which feels absolutely WILD to me but

12. STOP WITH THE TEAMS!!! STOP IT!!! There is no good guy and bad guy here and there shouldn’t be. It’s a monarchy, a whole ass empire that has its roots in an even worse empire. None of the Targaryens are good. They aren’t gods. Rhaenyra has been completely screwed over due to the patriarchy but being a victim doesn’t make you a good person. She’s still sacrificing the country for her birthright. Let her be evil, morally grey, ANYTHING is better than her pushing against common sense in order to seem like a good guy. Aegon and co as well shouldn’t be portrayed entirely of super villains and victims. They’ve also done a shitty thing but at the very least give us some nuance no one is entirely good or bad.

13. This is nitpicky so it’s at the end but it’s called house of the DRAGON. I wanna see more rider/dragon interaction. I shouldn’t be introduced to a dragon the same episode it’s maimed (Sunfyre). You shouldn’t be telling me one of the main characters has a dragon when we haven’t so much as heard her speak about it (Dreamfyre). If a bond is so important between a dragon and it’s rider I want to see that bond

• IN THAY SAME VEIN why was vermithor letting nyra and daemon get all up in his grill?? They’re bonded dragonriders they’ve got their bestie, he doesn’t. Shouldn’t he have lit them up for that?? What makes them so special?? He’s barbecuing Targaryen bastards left and right but these two get a pass?? Why??

And now for some general overall complaints🫶🏼

1. Fix your pacing I’m begging you. They could have made 8 episodes work if they had let us move through the plots faster but instead there’s so much dead air. After Jaehaerys was killed we should’ve been FLYING through plot points. Two child murders are enough to declare a war started, but we still hadn’t seen any battle until episode 4 and then it stalled out again. Harrenhal doesn’t need this much screentime. You don’t need to hint at Rhaena claiming Sheepstealer for 3+ episodes. We don’t need to hum and ha about going to war for 4 episodes. There should be fewer long shots of the actors faces simply reacting and more SPEAKING. More PLOT. MORE OF ANYTHING TO MOVE THE STORY FORWARD

2. Stop repeating information. Characters constantly beat you over the head with the same information over and over again. One character will tell a person something then a second character tells that same person almost the exact same thing an episode later it’s like no one proofread the script.

3. Why are you having your actors use giant words in order to sound more period accurate?? You don’t need to repeat lickspittle every five seconds. You don’t need to use gainsay or comportment. I promise your audience knows it’s a medieval setting, put the thesaurus down you sound like an idiot

4. It’s almost totally inaccessible for non book readers. I watch with my mom and sister, neither of whom have done any research about ASOIAF but have seen GOT, and I’m constantly explaining shit to them. The showrunners rely too much on people having read them that they don’t explain anything. I know Helaena has a dragon, but they don’t because NO ONE HAS MENTIONED IT BEFORE!! BY THE SECOND SEASON!!

5. This is just a me thing but I would’ve LOVED more regional costuming. We got a hint of it with Sabitha Frey wearing a headpiece when treating with Jace and I love the idea of each region having their own specific fashion trends. The costumes are fine, some are even great, but most are lacklustre and feel too fantasy to me. I’m a history girly I want to see more hoods and headpieces and different shapes in the dresses etc etc.

Despite all this there are still some great scenes!! Aspects of this season were awesome and I think the first two episodes in particular were really strong, there is just so much lost potential this season and it has been really disappointing. I’m still gonna be sat for the finale this week but I hope that they really up their game in season three

Really loving how the show is exploring the beginning of Kate and Lucy's relationship and all the insecurities that still lurk in the shadows of honeymoon bliss. There's a lot to love in 2x02:

Kate blurting out, “I want to tell my boss we’re dating,” and Lucy being completely thrown off. It’s Kate’s version of “I want to be intimate,” and Lucy pointing at the coffee shop and going, “Here???”

Lucy being a supportive, stabilizing force for Kate only for us to find out she's equally as freaked out and worried later in her own time (says it to Jesse and then, as pointed out very nicely here, she punches her girlfriend's boss's arm then tries to recover by nervously complimenting his corny apron).

"No, no it's not fine, Lucy... You make it look so easy," is giving "You're always doing nice things for me... I just wanted to show my appreciation." (Both of them feeling like they're not doing enough/doing it as well as the other and trying to do something big to make sure they're reciprocating properly, resulting in them making "mistakes" they feel the need to apologize for.)

2x02 is likely an intentional callback/parallel to 1x07 to show how far they've come:

Kate hesitantly whispering in a dark corner about being compartmented  after Lucy invited her out in front of people vs. Kate, in public, outright saying she wants to introduce Lucy to her boss and coworkers and inviting her to the barbeque (and wanting Lucy's input)

Lucy being all hush-hush with Ernie in the empty hallway vs. Lucy rambling loudly to Jesse about her girlfriend possibly losing her position because of conflict of interest concerns while walking down that same hallway (and then the bullpen) now full of coworkers

Kate not wanting anyone at work, especially Lucy’s team, to find out about them (”Ernie’s not people”) vs. Kate jumping at the chance to ask Jesse for advice despite him giving her an out (in general, Jesse, who labelled Kate 'the Mean Girl™️' in the pilot, now watching her lament over her own incompetence because of a silly misunderstanding all while making silly faces and asking him how to not piss off his teammate/little sister/friend)

"You make it look so easy." "We don't have to do this today." "No, no, I want to, it's just—it's a lot for me,"

is a less combative version of,

"I'm trying to do this your way, you know, be all expressive and smiley, it's just—it's hard for me to be-" "Human?" "I'm trying here, Lucy."

They're both self-deprecating scenes for Kate. She admits she's embarrassed by herself in 1x07 and we see it in 2x02 after she confesses that this is the first time she's ever introduced a girlfriend to her coworkers. In 1x07, it's like Kate's begging Lucy to see her and understand her. In 2x02, it feels more like deep shame (especially when she looks down at "It's a lot for me") over disappointing and failing Lucy again after saying she’d do things differently this time. Lucy, who’s the most amazing woman she’s ever met, who’s crazy about her, who’s still trying to reassure her when Kate can’t even do something as simple as correct her boss when he assumes she’s dating a guy. 

A big difference is that in one, Kate knows she hurt Lucy and is delivering a necessary apology after a disagreement and in the other, Kate thinks she’s hurt Lucy, even though Lucy's tells her it's fine. Kate still insists that it's not, is quick to say “it’s my fault”, and is stressing out big time over a small mistake. It also feels like the difference between the two Kacy scenes is this feeling of Kate “has to” vs. Kate “wants to”. S1 Kate is sharing because she messed up and is trying to cling onto the potential this relationship has and S2 Kate already knows the pain of losing Lucy to her own bad choices and wants to be better (1x07 ends with Kate in that state because she was prompted, but in 2x02 she starts the episode already having decided on her own that she wants to involve Lucy).

In 1x07, Lucy’s hurt and upset, so even when Kate’s being vulnerable (after Lucy offered up some vulnerability first) and turning her assumptions on their head, she lashes out. Ernie’s advice earlier in the episode is light-hearted ribbing, but also coated in the fact that maybe Lucy was wrong to make assumptions from her own insecurities. She can’t be sympathetic towards Kate just yet. Eventually, she recognizes the effort Kate’s putting in and agrees to terms that’ll make her the most comfortable. Kate’s asking for a lot of things in this scene: forgiveness, understanding, another chance, time. 

In 2x02, Lucy can clearly see Kate's distress and realizes the big leap Kate's trying to make for her, for them. Sees the workplace stakes 1x07 Kate might have been worried about and spirals a little too before Jesse course-corrects her. When Kate admits how new this type of milestone is for her, despite it being something Lucy's wanted since s1, she prioritizes Kate's comfort and says they don't have to do this today. It's only when Kate makes it absolutely clear that this is something she wants to do, something they both want, that Lucy switches the type of support she offers.

Kate puts herself out there, lets herself be vulnerable, and Lucy meets her halfway: in 1x07 when she agrees to being a secret and in 2x02 when she's supporting Kate's decision to be transparent and open about them.

The first is a compromise in the dark, in the closed-door break room tucked in the corner of the office, after their coworkers have gone home. Lucy flirts and teases, but she walks away, leaving Kate to chase after her. It obviously means a lot to both of them, but they don't say that out loud, instead choosing to be all coy about it and deflecting. They probably spend the night together, Kate showing her appreciation in the comfort of her own home.

The second is a reminder and a promise that Kate isn't alone anymore because they're in a serious, committed relationship. Lucy reaches out, leaves no room for doubt as she links their hands together, and tells Kate earnestly that she's right there by her side, that she's here to stay no matter what. In the light of day, out in the open, on their way to meet Kate's coworkers. Then, she walks with her into the bbq, stands by her the whole time, and uses that Lucy Tara charm on everyone. And Kate repays all that by being brave, by being openly sweet, loving, and affectionate with Lucy in front of everyone.

omg i LOVEDDDD orv i read it on my phone in the summer of 2023 when i had nothing else to do and it was genuinely so so good like the novel is PEAK i never read the webcomic version because i’m attached to the translations in the novel even though they’re not “official” but genuinely the novel is probably one of if not THE best things i’ve ever read like it actually changed my brain chemistry fr (it’s a long build but the ending arc is peak fiction)

I just hope the way they look at each other in the 2x04 feels justified. If Kiara get separated in the first episode and they don’t reunite until the end of 2x02 or 2x03 I just hope we see enough of the shift in their dynamic for that scene to not feel rushed.

I know what you mean, because all the build up and tiny moments is so important to me too. I’d rather them take two more whole seasons to get together than rush it for a second. But I think it should make sense and here’s why:

They’ve already started the shift in 2x10. They’ve established Kie doing a sort of double take and realizing how many of the same things they want and how alike they are. And the serious life or death thing they just endured together has definitely changed their relationship. We have Kie experiencing the fear of losing JJ and JJ having a “oh holy shit she was really worried” moment. They already seem paired off in what we’ve seen from the island and I think this is a natural result of what happened in 2x10. Them gravitating towards each other without entirely realizing it. I think they’ll take the opportunity right away to remind us that things are a little different between them, there’s a bit of a tonal shift. And THEN we’re gonna be shown JJ freaking the hell out about Kie being in danger and trying to get her back. That’s a lot of opportunity to show us how passionately JJ feels about this. And then when he gets her back, they’re experiencing that extremely intimate hug and I think the still in 3x04 is gonna be a carry over from all that pent up emotion.

And Jiara is already best friends and have been for their whole life. We’ve already been shown through acting that JJ has feelings for Kie. I don’t think it will take THAT much to make the shift to a new kind of intimacy, at least for that one scene, feel believable. Also important to remember he’s holding her friendship bracelets! Plus, I really do think seeing it in still form makes it even more unhinged than it actually is (which is diekwkej so unhinged). PLUS, they didn’t rush either pokie (somewhat regrettably lmao) or Jiara in S2 so that’s earned them a little trust from me that they want to do it right.

«we need to talk, party members only.» «mike c’mon!» «no, this is not negotiable!»

«I get why El was your mage now.» «what?» «Lucas told me about her» «he shouldn’t have, and just because you know the truth, that doesn’t mean you’re in our party. You know that right?»

And he NEVER apologized.

“Oh but he was mourning Eleven 🥺 he felt like everyone was moving on from her 🥺”

SO YOU AGREE? His lashing outs are totally understandable if you put them in the right context? It’s almost like he prioritizes whoever of his loved ones is in danger/hurt.

Now, I know that y’all care about everyone else’s trauma but Mike’s but I think, I THINK, that there is a reason why a model student, classic nerdy kid starts cheating in his tests, misbehaving and vandalizing the school. It’s not like he saw the girl that he loved fucking disintegrate in front of his eyes at the age of twelve. Because it’s totally healthy for a kid to call a presumed dead girl for 353 days and no one comforts him about it.

Now, by some freaking miracle, he gets her back. But she’s not just a normal girl, she’s like Superman, she’s the one that always gets put in danger. So Mike has to live with the constant fear of losing her. It’s almost like y’all keep ignoring the broken record of:

«I can’t lose you again» - season 2!

«Because I love her, and I can’t lose her again!» - season 3 !

«El, I don’t know how to live without you. I can’t lose you.» -season 4!

This kid is traumatized by losing El. So of course he’s concerned about it when Hopper threatens him saying that he could ban him from seeing her. When the freaking government comes in and tells him that he may never see her again. On top of that, I don’t know if you guys actually heard what he was talking about with Will in the car, but his self confidence is in hell. He feels that he is undeserving of El’s love and that’s another reason of worrying over how he may lose her.

Y’all mad. Mad because these last 2 seasons it was Will receiving the short end of the stick because for once in his life Mike prioritizes someone that was not him. He tried to apologize to Will after their fight in s3, he apologized to Will after their argument in s4. That’s more than what he actually did in s1/2 to El/Max. He still asked him if everything was okay in the theater in s3, he still put a hand on his shoulder and reassured him that they’d kill Vecna without a doubt.

“But he didn’t realize Will was crying in the car.” Okay cut him some slack for once, FOR ONCE. The military wants to kill his gf and he was thinking about what Will said to him. And even if he confronted him, then Will would’ve had to lie to him, because I don’t know if you have noticed; Will was not ready to explicitly come out to his brother, you think he would’ve come out to his unrequited crush? He lied about the painting saying it was El who commissioned it for a reason.

Mike loves his friends, he loves his girlfriend. He’s a fourteen year old boy that can’t express his feelings because the last time he interacted with his family was 49292 years go, he has anger issues, abandonment trauma, and y’all act as if he’s Jason or Billy.

People love traumatized characters until they display symptoms of trauma.

Note to self: don’t be gay (or queer-coded) in Indiana.

No, seriously.

I want to start with Robin, the only confirmed queer character we have on the show (and that alone is a bullshit statement considering the broad cast of characters the show’s working with).

She was originally intended to get with Steve in the end of S3 but Joe and Maya, in a push for them to remain platonic rather than romantic, actually brought up the idea of her being gay. The coming out scene was a great way to bring Robin further into her own, making her more of a distinct character than she would have been as just another love interest for King Steve, but it was also an amazing way to show Steve’s development as a character.

Come S4, we met Vickie, and it looked like we’d finally get a queer relationship on-screen until this scene.

And was this scene really necessary? Was it? Why did we need to see Steve hyping Robin up only to have her hopes for Vickie liking her shattered in the middle of a fucking gun store?

While the end scene with them in the gym gave me some hope, it’s still nothing concrete. This following quote is from a Netflix article about Vickie and Robin:

A “glimmer of hope”? Seriously? Even the one character confirmed to be gay can’t have a happy, on-screen relationship, however minor it is to the plot. FOUR seasons in and we can’t get a single queer couple.

Which brings me to my next point...Will.

He’s been queer-coded since S1 and it’s only gotten worse as time went on. In school, all of the Party members were bullied for being weird and nerdy, but there were also more specific things the bullies would target each of them for; Dustin’s lisp, Lucas’ race, and Will’s sexuality. He’s called various gay slurs by classmates, Lonnie Beyers, etc.

Then S2, and “It’s not my fault you don’t even like girls!” They can try and play that off as Mike saying Will just never seems to have crushes, but the delivery of the line, the fear in Will’s eyes as Mike says it, tells a far different story.

S4.01 upped the ante by a huge amount. Yeah, there were littler moments like the Alan Turing hero project or the girl in Will’s class, but it was no longer about throwaway lines or middle school bullies. We, the audience, watched Will’s growing jealousy and resignation towards Mike and El. We saw the pain on Will’s face when Mike said “We’re friends! Just friends” with a little too much force.

It was hard to watch, but 4.02 left a chance for the Duffers to fix what they’d started… They did no such thing.

Right out the gate we got the scene where Will was giving Mike advice about “El”. Will spills his heart out all over the floor of that van without ever saying what he truly wants to say and what comes of it? Nothing.

This scene was heartbreaking. It was a punch to the gut. It was a huge, fat fuck you from the Duffers.

Because Will bared his pain and his love to Mike in the only way he thought he could get it all through to him and in the end it’s just a device to further Mike and El’s heterosexual relationship. Not only that, but the encouragement and love Will shows to Mike before the final battle is used to help El defeat Vecna.

And yet maybe I could have forgiven them for all that, maybe, if we could just get 100% concrete evidence that Will is gay. The scene before the freezer bath when Will and Jonathan were talking could have been the perfect moment. “I’m gay,” Will all but whispers into his shoulder, and Jonathan just wraps his arms around his brother even tighter because it’s the only way he can convey that he knows and he loves him and he’s so goddamn proud…

…But we can’t even get something as simple as that.

Queer pain being used to win a battle and advance the plot while seeing no fruition for the queer character himself is worse than having no rep at all.

I want to wrap this up with my last point, the Duffers’ final slap-in-the-face to queer audiences.

Sweet, sweet Eddie Munson.

The town pariah, the outcast, the freak. The godless Satan-worshipper who was corrupting the youth.

When I say Eddie was queer-coded, that’s what I mean. I don’t mean his metalhead style or the handkerchief in his back pocket. I mean he was a misunderstood loner who’d distanced himself from other students as a form of protection, who was being literally hunted for a crime he didn’t commit.

A young man who died a violent death trying to be a hero and save a town that had never wanted him.

And who do we see mourn him, in the end? Just Dustin, who held him as he died, and his uncle, who always advocated for his innocence. He died the kind of death millions of queer people suffered during that time thanks to AIDS: largely alone and hated by most of society, with only the few people who had known him best willing to try and carry on his memory.

Why Lloyd is my least favorite ninja and how I rewrite him

Notes:// you know the rodeo by now, long post so it’s going to be under a read more, and I’m not gonna tag this with Lloyd because of the criticisms I have against his character, if you don’t want to hear Lloyd be critiqued then don’t reas the post

Why I don’t like Lloyd

Maybe it’s because I’m a Kai kinnie or maybe it’s because I have a bias agaisnt the younger sibling but Lloyd has never really been a favorite of mine

He was enjoyable in s1 but after that he kinda lost all personality for me and I stopped enjoying him

I think this is mostly for two reasons:

1. His screen time

2. His “character arcs”

I’ll go ahead and knock out his screentime here because it pretty much speaks for himself

Lloyd takes up so much screentime in the show that it’s actually jarring, he’s the character with the most seasons, having s1-2, s4, s8-11, and finally s14 ((the island special)). Which I think makes lloyds writing flaws all the more noticable

A big reason, albeit a bit of a petty one, for why I don’t like him is because he constant hyjacks other characters plots and makes them about him, this happened with Kai in both s4 and s11

Even if he’s not the main focus of a season, he always has a side plot focusing on him like in s3 and s12

The writers need to include Lloyd in other seasons is making it harder for the other main characters to actually have enough screentime to grow and develop on there own

And as a side effect of this, Lloyd gets to become the most important character in every season he is, taking roles from other characters who needed them

My best example is Cole being leader, he was set up and established as leader in the pilots and s1, and he did pretty good in it! Cole being a leader is a interesting concept that I would have loved to see been developed

But after Lloyd grew up they threw that plot point into the trash so they could have the mystical green ninja be leader even though throughout s1-7 he hardly actually talks to the main cast and him being leader doesn’t add any interesting dynamic like cole and kais rivalry despite Kai being a sort of right hand man to Coles leadership.

And in s1-s7 especially everything literally revolves around Lloyd to the point where his existence is more important than everyone else’s, and everyone’s motivations are to protect him.

Again I understand he is important, he’s the green ninja, but you have to let your other characters grow and develop, Lloyd is not the only main character in your show

Like for fuck sakes I don’t need 3 arcs about Lloyd and his dad, can I finally have another Kai season

Lloyds character arcs honestly kinda suck

Lloyds kinda an ass

The reason I like jay more then Lloyd even though jay has been way more mean spirited then Lloyd throughout the entire series is because you can atleast make the argument that jay doesn’t know when his jokes can hurt. And the show doesn’t portray jay as in the right, he gets what he deserves for some of the meanier things he says.

The same can’t be said about Lloyd

Lloyd says things to the other ninja that is honestly so mean spirited it’s jarring to hear it from him

Best example being when Lloyd told Kai to get over his shit when Kai was grieving in s4

But what makes it so frustrating is that the show always portrays Lloyd like he’s in the right which is why a lot of his character arcs feel flat or uninteresting

The only time this doesn’t apply is in s2 and in s3, in s2 the show paints Lloyd as being unfair to Misako when he RIGHTFULLY gets mad at her for abandoning him, I’ll get back to this later

The second time in s3 is when he’s traveling with Garmadon and having to be taught to balance his powers, which is actually one part of s3 I really liked, it was nice to see these two bond and have Garmadon teach Lloyd something that wu would other wise not teach him. And it’s a real shame the season cut it short AGAIN

The biggest example of the show making Lloyd seem in the right no matter what is in s4, Lloyds whole arc there was to learn how to view things from a different perspective and appreciate the things others have done for him. And this is would work if the show decided to do the same.

Again back to that scene with Lloyd and Kai in s4, the show treats Lloyd as if he’s in the right and it’s never addressed after this. Even though this is supposed to be the beginning of lloyds arc where he’s supposed to learn to view things from a different perspective

This scene would have worked if

1. The show didn’t paint him in the right for this, either by having Lloyd apologize or having the show acknowledged how it might have hurt Kai

2. If the plot Lloyd has remained a side plot instead of taking up the entire focus

Seriously, s4 could have been the ONE season where you can have a Lloyd side plot thats not forced and yet they fucked it up and made it the entire focus of the season thanks a lot.

To quote what I said in my Nya anayalsis awhile back

“I’m not upset that he has a flaw, just that it’s not recognized as one”

Lloyd would work way better as a character if the show just let him have consequences for his actions

Ever since he grew up and got the green ninja role he’s been treated like he can’t do no wrong which is clearly not true

But since we’re already on this topic

Hurting Lloyd doesn’t make him a good character

I feel like Tommy ((and sometimes the fandom)) really misunderstand what the use of suffering for in a story

There atleast 3 reasons writers make there characters suffer

1. To undergo a arc and realize where they have been wrong or to give a character a lot more depth to expand upon

2. If the story is a fallen hero one and the character suffers because of his Huberius

3. If the story is a tragedy

Ninjago is neither a fallen hero story or a tragedy and his pain doesn’t develop him as a character

A lot of writers don’t understand that suffering isn’t what makes a character good, it’s what pushes them to become good, you can’t just throw a character at the wall and expect them to instantly be a well written fleshed out character

A lot of the suffering Lloyd has to endure is mostly for no reason and it’s really mean spirited because it adds nothing to the plot, it’s just there to hurt him

Let’s bring up s11 as an example, Lloyd didn’t HAVE to fight the ice emperor from a writing standpoint, if anything it should have been kais battle because his lose of power and Zane going evil would have been a perfect reflection of s4 and tie it up after it ended kais character a bit open ended

But no let’s have Lloyd do it instead because haha isn’t trauma COOL and HIP

Now to be clear, I’m not saying that all of your stories have to end on a happy ending or anything like that, if your a writer then your allowed to do whatever you want with your personal writing

What I am saying is that ninjago is an actual SHOW made by PROFESSIONAL writers and they can’t understand the concept of a story structure

And the lack of actually addressing his trauma is really bringing down Lloyd as a character

Because it comes to a point where you understand why Lloyd is sometimes mean or distrustful of other people and it’s frustrating because you know that it’s flaws of him that are never going to be fixed because there writers want there trauma baby

How I would rewrite him

I’ve seen a lot of people suggest Lloyd become a villain in a future season and you know what, I sort of agree

But not in the way you think

I feel like it would be way more compelling if Lloyd was a villain but is still a ninja, instead of Lloyd switching sides, the show is switching perspectives

More or less I want Lloyd to be a reflection of the “true” villain, which is how wu ((and subsequently Lloyd)) put small Victories as more important then the ninjas life, passion, and desire, and how there black and white thinking of good and evil ends up to a lot of problems because there’s a lot of grey area there choosing to ignore

I want Lloyd to start of being loyal to wu’s philosophy and the protagonist, for random example let’s say Kai, sudden turn on these ideas in order to look outside the box to find if there truly is a better way to protect people without harming himself

I want Lloyd to be upset over what he thinks is a turn to the dark side when in reality, it would make his motivations make sense and not make his turn to “villainy” be out of character.

And over the course of the season he starts to realize how wus and subsequently his leadership has hurt the others and himself, and have him reflect on if all the pain they suffer through just to clean up wus mistakes is really worth it like wu says, or if there’s a better way like kai says

As for Lloyds actual character himself, I’d like for his flaws to be more noticeable

Have Lloyd be a gifted kid who gets praise when he doesn’t deserve it but still kinda acts like a brat because he’s still mentally like 10

Have him be a control freak who follows the rules way to strictly and is all serious when they have to do missions

Have his idealization of wu be realized and critiqued because honestly wu sucks ass

Would this make his character less like able? Maybe, but then he’d actually have depth and something to improve on

He can still have his s3 and s4 arcs, it’s just now they’re more important because he’s actually learning to be better

Alright round two on the Blackstede AUs I really need to see, this time featuring Flinthamilton! We have two nickels guys and I am gonna use them goddamn it.

Takes place well after s4 of Black Sails and s2 of OFMD. (We’re going to assume James and Thomas have eloped from the plantation and settled in a nice little cottage somewhere obviously.)

So The Revenge crew are landbound for a little rest and resupply. (When the morale is low and the pockets full, a little shopping spree is in order -Stede) Everyone’s off doing their own thing, Jim testing out new hats, Olu checking out the jewelry, Roach bargaining over a set of butcher knives, heck even Lucius had the day off of scribing Stede’s every move. All was swell for the first time on a land trip. All except for one.

Edward stood in front of a street vendor glaring at books upon books all spread out with their fancy titles and pretty bindings. He’d been wandering around for hours trying to find something just right. Something for Stede that is. Giving gifts wasn’t his thing but the bizarre little man brought out strange behaviors in Ed. Thus he was trying and failing to find a book that Stede might like. Really anything would do, but it had to be perfect.

He’s interrupted from his grumbling when a man beside him compliments the book in his hand as being a good read. The stranger is tall as shit with short blonde hair. He’s carrying a stack of books already so Ed assumes the guy knows his shit.

They chat for awhile, Ed eventually learns the man’s name is Thomas and he helps sell books at this vendor for a larger bookstore in the city. He wraps Ed’s purchase in brown paper and kindly invites him (and the soon to be owner of the purchased book) to dinner at his house, noting that he has a much nicer collection of books at home.

Later after Ed’s awkwardly given Stede his gift (“For me?” “Yeah, whatever, fuck off.”) He broaches the idea of dinner with the promise of a fancy personal library tour from Thomas. Stede is delighted, of course.

The library lives up to the hype, at least for Stede, for Ed it’s really just another pile of books. Thomas and Stede are excitedly chatting over poems when the front door swings open and a sturdy man saunters in with a bewildered look upon his face. He glances between Thomas and his guests but has to do a double take when he sees Ed lounged back on an armchair with his feet kicked up. Ed knows immediately this man is dangerous and the look of recognition in his eyes when he glares at Ed is cause for trouble.

Thomas, oblivious, greets the man (James) and happily tells him how they all met and that they’d be staying for dinner.

James gives a heaving sigh and closes his eyes as he listens to Thomas. When Thomas is done he turns a much softer gaze on the man and says in a tired but kind voice, “Thomas, dear. You’ve invited Blackbeard and The Gentleman Pirate to our house for stories and soup is what you’ve done.”

Stede is standing aghast the whole time, though it’s only later after they’d left that he aggressively whacks Ed’s shoulder and proclaims how the foolish man had brought them to have dinner with Captain-freaking-Flint and apparently his lover! Honestly he’s a little starstruck. Best dinner date ever.

The show is stablishing siblings relationships, even though it's just one season we got Anthony-Daphne, Benedict-Eloise as the strongest ones, although I notice Benedict had a close relationship with Anthony, Eloise and Colin, I wouldn't be surprise if it's Daphne the one who is going to talk to Kate about Anthony, especially because the show wants to focus a little more in female power but I hope I'm wrong and it's Benedict because it makes more sense given how much time they spend together

I think so too. As much as I would rather it be Ben or Colin, I think that's going to be Daphne's main plotline this season. With Rege leaving, Daphne's role is tricky enough. They can focus on motherhood which is wonderful but there's so much they could do with that when she's alone. It's sad the opportunity they missed out on not having Simon there, as Simon dealing with all his issues now that he's a father would have been such a good sub-plot for them as a couple. As they deal with them really at all in season 1. I think it's easier to put the attention on Daphne helping Anthony as well, since that's what he tried and failed to do in season 1 and draw it away from Rege's absence as I think a lot of people will be talking about that. Which is a shame, as freaking JONATHAN BAILEY AND SIMONE ASHLEY ARE PLAYING ANTHONY BRIDGERTON AND KATE SHARMA and honestly we’re all going to be like simon who? daphne who? after this season as it is going to be SO GOOD. 

Also, Anthony was unpopular for some people for how he treated Daphne and Siena in season 1. He tried to redeem himself with Daphne towards the end of season one but since this is his season, a way for his character to appeal more to everyone (even though I can't see how anyone can't adore him, especially seeing his storyline in s2 and reading TVWLM and also, look at him) but putting Daphne and Anthony together in s2 and focusing on repairing their relationship with will show his character growth as well.

I would have preferred Daphne being there for Eloise during her debut more than Anthony and Ben with Anthony as he tries to find a wife and tries to pretend the love of his life isn't right in front of him, glaring at him @KateSharma <3

The show has done well with sibling relationships, they’ve such a brilliant family dynamic and show how siblings actually behave. I also want them all to focus on Edmund and talk about him. Edmund is so central to Anthony’s story and it would be amazing if they explore how it affects all the siblings, as well as Anthony. I want to see conversations about him between Anthony and Ben who would have more memories with him, as well as Colin, Daphne and Eloise. I want to see Eloise talking about being with Edmund when he died. Violet talking about him. Hyacinth, Fran and Gregory asking about him as well as they were so young and H didn’t meet him and Gregory wouldn’t remember him. Anthony needs to talk about his dad and Ben is the person he needs to do it with, someone who remembers him and understands why Anthony needs to.

 I hope they continue showing how siblings are focus on the conflict in the sibling relationships but also on the happier side to sibling relationships. Like the ones who are very close-Ben and Anthony, Colin and Daphne and hopefully we see Eloise and Francesca this season! I'd love to see Anthony and Eloise as well taking on society together, as he'll be chaperoning her and focusing on not screwing it up like he did was Daphne's. In TSWL, the Anthony and Eloise scene was so good and heartwarming and I would scenes like that in season two. Johnny and Claudia also have incredible chemistry and we didn't get enough of them in season 1.

Anthony and Colin definitely butt heads but I'd love to see Ben and Colin teasing him this entire season and also being there for him, but I think we're not going to see a lot of Colin. I think he'll be traveling. If we do see him, I think we could see him maybe sleeping around and a bit miserable post-Marina.

I just really want more of Anthony, Colin and Ben as a trio. I really hope they keep the scene in TVWLM at Whites when he announces he's going to get married as it's hilarious but also the scene at the end of the book where they tell him to go home to Kate. Their brotherhood is so lovely and I want to see the Bridgerton women's sisterhood as well! Eloise will reluctantly end up relying or confiding in Benedict or Daphne as she's going to hate her debut but also be insecure, scared and overwhelmed. I can't see her going to Violet too much with her fears, same with Anthony for a lot of reasons, so it would be nice if they confide in each other or Eloise with Benedict or Daphne and Anthony with Ben.

I also need some Anthony, Hyacinth and Gregory scenes. As well as Anthony and Francesca being so alike and getting each other. Those are headcanons in my head I need to come true pleaseee. Hyacinth not having one scene with Anthony in her book was a robbery and I'll never be over it. Same with Francesca and when he was wicked. His little sister was a widow and her big brother Anthony didn't get one scene with her !? Anthony Bridgerton !? Come on!

I think it's more likely Eloise will go to Ben though as if they're focusing on Anthony and Daphne more in s2, Eloise and Ben already have a close relationship. There's Penelope too who Eloise will talk to but I can see a bit more conflict for their friendship in s2 as from their fight in season 1, Penelope calling her a 'pretty Bridgerton', that might be something Eloise worries about and her debut will be a lot more successful than Penelope's and there could be more jealously.

Excited to see what is ahead of us! The great thing about this show is if you read the books, you know the main couples storyline but we also get to see all the other siblings storylines before/after their books as well that we have no idea about, as well as characters like Penelope and the Fetheringtons!

Ok so I'm going to try and put my thoughts about S3 into coherent phrases. Beware for spoilers! (also this is going to be long)

-Though I really liked how the season started with the raft leaving Nublar, I kinda wish they’d given us some scenes before that, since there’s four months between the ending of s2 and the beginning of s3. But then again, that’s what fanfiction is for *clicks pen*.

-Not Kenji wanting to do a human catapult- *facepalms*.

-Me on Episode 1: BEN’S NOT GOING TO WANT TO LEAVE THE ISLAND AND I’M SOOO NOT OKAY (yes i was crying since episode one got a problem with that?)

There was also the thing with Bumpy, that was kind of a barrier between them and the rest of the campers. Before watching the season I thought that we’d have a happy Ben but the more I think of it, it makes sense that they decided to show us him realizing he doesn’t have to go back to his old self, but that he also doesn’t have to act like he’s still alone and that he has the camp fam to rely on. That doesn’t mean I’m forgetting Ben almost punching Darius into the next century, that felt a bit off. Nevertheless, stan Ben “be gay do crimes” Pincus.

-YASAMMY NATION HOW ARE YOU DOING???? Since that angsty moment in 03x05 I knew we were going to get some Yasammy, but I WASN’T EXPECTING THIS MUCH. The flashbacks from Yaz’s POV got me every time, and the way they made the moments match, that sudden change from present to flashback was just amazing. And don’t get me started on Yaz’s breakdown at Wu’s lab, I was freaking screaming and sobbing. She was so desperate to find a cure for Sammy. If that’s not love then I don’t know what the f*ck that was. Also, she practically YELLED at Scorpius Rex FOR SAMMY. She twisted her ankle again and kept going, Sammy was her only motivation to keep going. And how she smiled at her when she woke up? You’ve got it so bad Fadoula. And then her trying to be positive to cheer Sammy up? Cringey for everyone, sure, but the effort is what matters. I absolutely adore how the writers are taking their relationship, I can’t wait for Season 4 to give us even more content (or even make it canon, the possibilities are endless!)

-”Ben, you beautiful, disturbed, beautiful boy” is an accurate description of his character

-The way Yaz was holding Sammy at the end of 03x06, Dinostar hugging and Ben and Kenji being just...so far apart feels symbolic, like it has hidden meaning.

-The “I love you, bud” got me because I was watching the show in spanish (they said “te quiero, amigo”) and between the lack of Benji and all the development Ben and Darius had gotten this season really had me thinking for the last three episodes that Benrius had just become canon and...I took that personally *flashback to me sobbing in the living room, calling my friends in desesperation*. That also has me worried bc now I see Benrius as a possible ship and I’m not sure of how well would I deal with that. Maybe a few months ago I would’ve been fine but now...I’m too invested into Benji, sorry 😔

-Kenji at the end of this season...where do I start? Dude has no other family (A REAL FAMILY) except for the Camp Fam, and he was obviously feeling guilty on 03X06 because if he had hurried up with the packing they would have gotten out of the treehouse sooner, and maybe Sammy wouldn’t have gotten attacked. Then they were about to leave Ben alone on the island, and now Wu and his crew had Brooklynn captive. In the span of less than 24 hours he had been about to lose 3 members of his “family”, so it’s a bit understandable that he didn’t understand Darius’s plan and ran away with the laptop. And we saw him being even more and more protective of the campers through the entire season. And then we got this scene of him protecting Brooklynn (again, Kenji and Brook being big brother and little sister). And luckily, the laptop got destroyed, because if not we would be having a very different convo right now. And I’m not even gonna get started on his words to Darius bc that’s the next part.

-Darius...Darius my boy...this was probably the angstiest season from his POV. The entire drama with Ben wanting to stay on Nublar, the Scorpius Rex, then trying to expose Wu, and then Kenji’s words at the end of the season. I want to focus on this last one bc I really don’t have much to say rn about the guilt arc w Ben that I haven’t said in Ben’s analysis. Kenji practically blamed him for putting Brooklynn in danger, when it was her who decided to risk it and expose Wu rather than saving herself. And also, something to recall, who made Darius the leader? Kenji. Darius is a child, and while I see the nature of Kenji’s anger, that doesn’t excuse him from the fact that he has hurt Darius deeply when he’s not really to blame. Darius already has all this guilt stored from Ben’s fall and the stress from PRACTICALLY CARRYING THE GROUP ON HIS BACK, adding this drama with Kenji is going to make him break. Cry my child, please cry. I need you to.

-Was it just me, or did the Goodbye Bumpy scene felt a bit dry?

Rebel Robin podcast (ep 3 &4 analysis)

For those who haven’t read them yet. Here’s the analysis for podcast ep 1&2. Analysis of Rebel Robin book-here. And eastereggs from rebel robin novel- here.

So the main things I noticed in ep 3 was how Robin spying was shown as a huge NEGATIVE-and Mr Hauser got upset over her doing so. Robin listens to mr. Hauser’s phone call (like Karen with Mike in s3/ us gov spying on calls in s1) & on a different occasion Robin also eavesdrops on a private convo he is having with someone else in his classroom ( like El spying on Mike talking to Lucas in s3). And when he finds out about this he tells her how wrong it was to spy on other people like that. In the past, I also talked about how the theme of spying is shown for many other st characters ( in the show) and how it  isn’t romanticized like people think it is- here .

Anyways , Ep 3 ends with a call from a h*mophobic teen( Dash) telling Robin to “stay away” from Mr. Hauser cause he’s “dangerous”. Why he thinks he’s dangerous is solely for the fact he’s gay.I think this theme may come into play in s4 Hawkins (in relation to the satanic panic). In ep 4 Robin jokes to (gay) Mr. Hauser  : “ So what are you into... satanism?” (Sadly most queer people have been told over and over we’re going to hell for being gay/lgbt+. it’s sadly an almost universal experience.) For those unaware- the ‘satanic panic’ was a right wing christian movement in the 80′s that WRONGLY associated certain things with supposed satanism.  Just some of the many things they demonized : rock music , stephen king , wearing black,  horror/fantasy media, and of course queer people and d&d (hellfire club - the name is a a xmen ref but in the show it’s probably an inside joke about the satanic panic and people being scared of d&d). We see foreshadowing of the satanic panic hinted in s3 (in relation to d&d)- on tv the narrator asks if “satanism” (pans to d&d set) is to blame for the odd occurrances in Hawkins. And given how the s4 el-trailer had the clock say 3:00am for the “witching hour” also called “the devil’s hour” since it’s supposed to be a subversion of jesus dy*ing at 3:00 pm. And the possibility s4 may take place around Easter.  I think we’ll see that religious (Christian) extre*sm  causes many people in Hawkins to interpret the supernatural as ‘satanic’. And no , I’m obviously not talking poorly about all religious/christian people).

After this Mr. Hauser jokes how Hawkins is like “lord of the flies” and how he “worries” what would happen if teens were left to their own devices-like in the book. The themes in the book mostly focus on the dangers of ‘mob mentality’ and how human beings can become v*olent and turn on each other- if the safety of civilization disappears...

This I believe is foreshadowing - i mentioned in a post a while back (here). How movies on the s4 list had the theme of :  a supernatural event indirectly causing towns people to act irrationally and turn on eachother v*olently. Despite literal monsters attacking them from outside (they chose to turn on eachother instead). In the end some townspeople become the real monsters via mob mentality/v*oence/false witch hunts (the mist, the birds, etc). In ‘the birds’ (while people are hidding in a store)- they wrongly  blame certain characters for the supernatural chaos. Similarly, in ‘the mist’ (crowd of townspeople are trapped in a store) and some  start interpreting the monsters as being sent as punishment by god- some town’s people start quoting the bible and saying the only way to stop the punishment is to start “sacrificing the s*nners and nonbelievers”. BIG YIKES.ST references mapple street (where the wheelers and sinclairs live). It’s based on the twilight zone ep of the same name “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” .The ‘monsters’ of that episode -were the townspeople turning on eachother because they incorrectly think their own neighbors are part of an invading supernatural army. The enemy was actually the paranoia/mob mentality-not the supernatural force they feared.  And yes i do think this concept is linked with 80s satanic panic and will cause some town division/obstacles for our heroes to deal with . **I also think the s4 bts of the Hawkins blood clinic-may be used to show h*mophobia (linked to satanic panic) in the town. Like in one s4 movie “paradise lost”the punk rock boys who were into black clothes, rock music , horror/stephen king books- were accused by the town’s people of being gay AND have demonic powers that are k*lling fellow town’s people.

Mr Hauser says he thinks steve Harrington is Ralph from lord of the flies. And Robin disagrees saying he’s Jack. Personally- since this was when Robin didn’t know/hated Steve. I think Mr hauser is right that Steve is Ralph (one of the oldest boys) who’s “commitment to civilization and morality is strong”. But Jack  (perhaps the popular s4 kid Jake?) and his savage crew take control of the group and start trying to attack Ralph and his friends (steve’s crew- over satanic panic?). How this begins is -

 Jack, torments Ralph and others. And some kids begin to develop savage personalities, after someone claims to have seen a Beast (demongorgan?) in the woods. This creates fear among the boys, which allows Jack to access more power.Ralph gets into an argument with Jack, who splits from the tribe. Many of the other boys follow Jack, who uses fear to manipulate the boys into leaving Ralph. And Jack’s crew begin attacking Ralph and his friends.

Ok, next topic of ep 4- the sentimental part of my brain got emotional when hearing how upset Robin was. And than Mr Hauser-telling her she’s wrong and she’s not “broken” or “rotten” and “nothing about her needs to be fixed’” (got me right in the feels) . As a queer person- I feel like every lgbt+ kid/teen needs to hear what Mr. Hauser said to Robin. 

However,  the analytical part of my brain -did notice some easterggs/ series parallels.

The convo starts with them talking about music Mr hauser likes (such as Bowie). And transitions to Mr Haauser asking about things she likes, whether she’s being bullied, and he later tells her “ DON’T let other people’s small mindedness make you fell bad about yourself. you don’t need to change yourself-no matter what anyone else says” . And Mr Hauser than says him calling her the “weirdest girl in Hawkins” was a compliment (not an insult-like she initially assumed). 

This is remarkably similar to certain scenes in s1/2. In s1, Jonathan mentions musicians he likes such as Bowie, asks Will about what he likes,  and tells Will “don't like things cause people tell you you’re supposed to-especially not him (their dad who called him h*mophobic names)” . In s2, Jonathan tries to cheer Will up after asking if he's being being bullied. And calls Will  “a freak” (and says it’s a good thing) and he should be content with being a “freak “ and compares Will to Bowie ( who was openly queer since the 70s) . 

In ep 4, Robin also mentions how sad she is that her parents won’t let her ride her bike anymore cause their paranoid about her safety  (like what happened to Will in s2).

Robin (before Mr. Hauser comforts her) says she feels like she has a “rot” inside her  . This is a s2 eastergg that could be linked to either Will or El. Will says his now-memories are “growing”, spreading”, and killing.” Later Kali says the emotional pain caused by her father  caused a “wound” to “spread”. Later allusion-Brenner tells El she has a “terrible wound “ (“a rot”) that Will “grow, spread, and kill.”

The reason Robin rants about feeling like she has a “rot” inside her is because she’s being bullied, and  lost all her Hawkins friends and says  “maybe I’m broken maybe there is just something about me that drives people away? I’m the only common denominator-there’s something wrong with me! There’s something inside of me that’s just rotten and there’s nothing i can do to fix it”. Which 1)-poor Robin. 2) I feel like could easily be How Will feels in s4(who will be the same age as Robin is here in the podcast)- his dad abandoned him, all his hawkins friends are gone , the st s4 movies have h*mophobic bullying in them (and he was bullied in the past). In a interview Noah said Will in s4 “doesn’t really get along with people-it’s just him and Mike.”  I think it fits more so with Will than El . But they may feel similar:  it’s implied in s4 audition tapes she’ll be bullied too,  she moved away from her friends,  and her father (Hopper) fake “passed away.” It could easily be how both Will and El feel in s4- that there is  something “broken”/ “rotten” about them . In fact, in the rebel Robin novel there is even a character named Sheena. Sheena reminds me a bit of a mix between Will and el . She is very quiet, queercoded, and is often bullied. And she finds mean notes and other things stuffed  in her locker- placed there by bullies. A bit like how Will found the zombie-boy note in his locker. A teacher doesn’t stop her bullying just blames her and says “ This wouldn’t happen if you made it just a smidgen easier for PEOPLE to understand you.”(sort of reminding me of that Noah quote about s4 Will not getting along with most people/Jonathan saying not to change himself cause “people” say to). But sheena can be another name for Jane (there was also a 80s show character named Sheena who was psychic) so ...maybe foreshadowing of el/jane being bullied in highschool? Along with Will?

*It’s not a eastergg/parallel...just speculation. Unlike the rebel robin book... in the podcast (in multiple episodes) almost every time she opens up to Mr Hauser about her problems she says it’s ok for him to do the same and she’ll be supportive and listen. However, Mr Hauser (so far) always rejects her offer-much to her hurt/frustration. In ep 4, she asks if he has someone his “own age” he can talk to about his problems-which he says he does. Now... since in ep 4 Mr hauser is paralleled to Jonathan maybe Jonathan will have someone his own age to talk to about his problems (maybe his new friend Argyle?) We see similar to Mr Hauser giving advice/pep talks to (gay) Robin. Jonathan is always giving advice/peptalks to our (gay-coded) Will. But so far- Jonathan has no one he really emotionally leaned on in the same way (Will does with Jonathan). I also wonder if Will in s4 starts gets tired of how he always confides in Jonathan (but Jonathan never does the same with Will  in return)? Like Robin with Mr. Hauser?

ahhhh my portwell tweet has almost a thousand likes!! idek how that happened bc this post is literally just me freaking out about getting them back on my screen but hey 🤷‍♀️

just a reminder that the toxic r*nas on twitter are nothing but a small, (very) vocal minority that goes out of their way to shit on portwell. almost every fandom has that one set of shippers or subsection of the fandom whose full-time job is being miserable and making the people around them miserable. literally. i’ve seen it time and time again. tv shows, movies, books, everything.

at this point, i’ve learned to stay in my lane, let them live in their bubble of delusion, and just use the block button whenever i have to. and yeah, it does suck that there’s always gonna be people who wanna come into your lane and block your line of vision. in our case, we keep seeing r*nas post about how portwell isn’t gonna last, they’re gonna break up over the summer, r*na endgame, yada yada yada.

and look. i get it. everything is really uncertain right now. none of us fully trust tim after some of the switcheroo’s he’s pulled on the characters and just the fact that show runners are hard to trust in general.

but we’ve already got plenty of people rooting against us and trying to bring us down. we don’t need to do that to ourselves. i know it’s hard not to get in your own head about literally every single thing that could go wrong in season 3. i’m well aware that portwell has some cards stacked against them.

and yet, i’ve still got nothing but hope and an open mindset going into this next season. like, i’ve been waiting in agony for so long to get this announcement and i was literally screaming in public when the confirmation dropped. my heart was overflowing with joy just thinking about all the canon!portwell content we’re about to enjoy. like come on - portwell hugging, kissing, holding hands, cuddling, a forehead kiss, a dance, a whole lotta flirting - it’s honestly a lot more than i would’ve dared hope for.

it’s so so important to learn to see the good things in life. we’ve been given so many blessings. there are people who complain about the writing/music of season 2 (which i might be in the minority here but i genuinely loved all of the development we got this season and the soundtrack is way better imo), but just the fact that they put out a full season to entertain us in the middle of a pandemic is something that we take for granted.

and to be honest, i sometimes take for granted portwell itself too. like how much thought the writers put into crafting the relationship, all the parallels and the tropes and the way their relationship in s2 mirrors and complements their individual character trajectories in s1. all of the little details and the hints they gave us. and ofc the s2 finale. like yeah i was disappointed that we didn’t see the kiss, but the ending was honestly so them. the characters got the happy ending they needed and the audience got the reassurance we needed, but it didn’t overstep where ej/gina were in their relationship at that point in time and didn’t try to overdramatize it too soon. it left something more to be explored in season 3, a lot more, which is precisely why we’ve all been so anxiously awaiting this announcement.

so why all of a sudden do we think that that exploration isn’t gonna happen? that we’re gonna be let down? is it what the r*nas are saying? because remember they also said portwell would stay besties (proven false), portwell was one-sided (proven false), portwell’s age gap meant the writers would never go there (proven false), portwell was a plot device (proven false), and that portwell was like siblings (proven very false by literally the fucking script itself).

the haters can say what they want, but it’s becoming increasingly obvious that everything they say is shrouded in delusion - trying to comfort themselves as they come to the realization that their ship is not only pretty much bones, but it’s also overshadowed by an unexpected pairing that is now possibly the best love story on the show.

so what we’re not gonna do is let r*na or anything else (including our own fears and anxieties) ruin this for us. we’re gonna be fine.

okay so for paigeandy obvi we're starting andy's an old childhood friend of the halliwell's for the sake of cleanliness did not date any of them (if we're going messy tho dated prue hooked up once or twice with phoebe (not while dating prue, but neither of them ever mentioned it around prue bc well. yikes.) And piper had a major crush on andy for like. a decade. from ages 13 to 23) and he's a cop and does. stuff idk helps people and this lands him frequently in bed with social services which is. consistently. a pain in the ass. and he doesn't try to hold it against them bc they're clearly understaffed underpaid there's a lot to do but um jesus. and everyone in the precinct Hates having to go over there to do stuff bc you're just standing in the lobby drinking bad coffee for fifty minutes before you can even get a word in with the work and unlucky andy he drew the short straw ends up at social services and who should he meet there if not this gorgeous but really scatterbrained berkeley grad with a mouth like a sailor and a heart of gold and now um there's no need to draw straws at the station because andy straight up volunteers to go to social services just to see paige which she notices of course because like. were you jinxed or something? cursed? i've never known someone to draw the short straw so many times. and andy's like no i just um. like being hands on with my work i don't like leaving up to some dumb rookie with bad luck and paige is like oh don't worry i promise it is still being left to some dumb rookie with bad luck i mean i am right here blah blah blah banter conversation hint at a tragic backstory give it half a season and then it's official bf/gf shit and as far as charmed goes it's a prophecy about four sisters and the halliwells are like phew. dodged a bullet there lmao. until they do something only charmed ones could do and they're like Wait. Fuck. Is There A Fourth Sister Out There? so they find paige within the first hmm ten episodes or so.

so since we have both s1 phoebeleo and paigeandy i'd say they'd be on the fastest track but i feel like paige does have a lot more issues when it comes to getting married and having kids than phoebe does regardless i think by s4 they're married on track to have kids with pruecole we're doing the s3 introduction and the enemies to lovers arc we seal that with either a wedding at the very end of s4 or at the very beginning of s5 however kids is like. like they both want kids but prue has daddy issues and cole has mommy issues not to mention the charmed one/demon hybrid so they need to do some soul searching on that one. prue's probably pregnant by the end of s5 and has her baby halfway thru s6. paige may or may not have had kids at this point if they did they were kind of a whoopsies baby but she and andy r embracing it with open arms.

piperkyle imo is peak in a divorce/widower era it's been pitched like piperkyle au where he's not fucking insane piperkyle au where she's not brokenhearted piperkyle au where they're both normal happy people who then meet but like. nah. the appeal of them to me really is being the broken fucked up human being and feeling like you're kinda just gonna stay broken and fucked up bc you had your shot and you blew it so now you're here get used to it and then to have someone to meet someone who sees you so genuinely as you are that at first it's disgusting leave me alone i hate you but out of that just honest sight grows familiarity and comfort and before you even realized it happened love and jfc i'm in love with them???? but you realize that you're always happier when they're around you want to stay by their side and you don't even have to wonder if they feel the same because you just know they do because you Know each other and you don't have to wait for them to turn and run once they see who you really are because they know who you are they've known from the start saw the ugly the broken and vile and looked past that and saw the beauty and genuine love underneath like 🗣‼🗣‼🗣‼🗣‼. piperkyle consistently makes me insane. So. in order to hit this. we're bringing in dan. that's right, from season two to six (maybe just five but i'd like to have the pruecole arc wrapped up in a nice bow by the time we open up the next enemies to lovers) piper and dan give a relationship the old college try going from the honeymoon phase to the cringe failmarriage stage until it's eventually just time to call it quits like you literally can't move forward. so because of the delayed start piperkyle would def be the last to have kids but because this is a long slowburn full of character development and just like. vulnerable bonding moments i think that once they go official as a couple wedding and kids are not far off on the horizon i think if we close out a season (a hypothetical 9 or 10) with them getting together for the first time then we gotta burn some miles on the freak out denial stage because i always think that's funny that'll last half a season? maybe a third. and then by the end of the season we're looking at a wedding. by the end of the following season they def have a kid

The invincible comic is like super gratuitous with its violence so much so I'm shocked the show was able to adapt it in a faithful way! I think you’re really amazing!

I’m so relieved that you answer asks and discuss speculation because I really need someone to talk this through.

So, I have watched a couple of other thriller series along the same lines where the makers don’t have any issues killing off major characters off the show.

There are a couple of things that are happening in this show which I think (and I honest to god hope I’m wrong) are building up to them killing off Ressler.

They get together, they partially admit their feelings (which we’ve been waiting for too Damn long) - so they get closure. Ressler is in the hospital, they show him deteriorating, he goes into v-fib.

And all of this is not that much of a game changer but hear me out. The task force is being dismantled and they need to give the viewers sth that they won’t expect. And bring some new spice in s9. With Liz going full time into crime, it seems a lot easier for them to kill off Ressler.

My only counter debate to my point is that they would have killed him off the moment he got shot (like they did with Meera) rather than show him being treated.

I really need to know what you think. Please tell me he’s not gonna die cause honestly who on earth will watch the show then?

Hi there! I have to say a special thank you to you, @alrightygirl, and to my anon (above) who I have lumped in, for the shoutouts on my stories. I came to Tumblr in the first place during the hiatus between S2/S3 in part because I realized some of my fav fanfic authors (@aussieokie !) were here so I am especially happy to read this.

I'm not sure people realize how much we fanfic writers thrive on feedback, and especially on the multi chapter works we invested so much time into. So thank you, and I have to say I really am looking forward to the end of the season so I can step away from the BTS hunt and my inbox and get back to just creating. Hopefully the writers will leave things in a good place in 8.22 so there's plenty to work with. Ok, on to the substance of your ask and I'll put in a jump because I can already tell this is getting long.

I really do NOT think Ressler will die. I didn't think so before 8x19 and I still don't think so after the "medical drama" of 8x20. Because that's what I think they're doing - they're creating drama because it's the end of the season and they want people freaking out and guessing over who will survive. Call it the curse of cable, or thrillers or whatever, but we as audiences have been conditioned to believe that major characters have to die every year, even if it's pointless.

The thing is, The Blacklist has never been that show. They have killed three "main characters" in the life of the show. Meera in S1 (and I later read Parminder only had a one-year deal), Tom in S5 (with huge fanfare and foreshadowing and an entire "hero" arc following a failed spinoff with a new series eagerly awaiting him at NBC), and Samar in S6 after the actress specifically requested to be released from her contract after S5 and gave them time to write her character an appropriate conclusion arc which also had huge foreshadowing.

Could they go a different route this year? Sure. We're late in the life of the show and twists and cliffhangers and budgets all come into play but the thing is - I just still really don't see it when it comes to Ressler.

For me, the characters' perspective is always paramount. What purpose would Ressler's death serve? It would make Liz more upset (because, you know, Sam, Tom, Katarina, her sister, her whole team weren't enough?). And other than that......?

The audience already knows the gravity of the stakes. So does Liz. So does every other character. The only purpose Ressler's death would serve that I see (and to be clear, I am focusing only on the characters in the show not the irrational fandom hate for his character) is to "punish" Liz more, to make her feel worse about what she's done, to deal another body blow on top of all that she's suffered already.

I don't think Liz needs that. (I'm positive nearly all of Reddit disagrees).

She turned herself in to Cooper because she recognized the bloodshed needed to end after she FEARED losing him. She stayed by Ressler's side and spoke her entire speech in the hearse and by his unconscious side because she can't handle losing him too. This is exactly the scenario the writers teased when Eisendrath teased all those months ago that maybe he would use her feelings for him to get her to come back.

He didn't overtly "use" her feelings in the end because that is not Ressler. He is not that guy. But in the end, her feelings for him were EXACTLY why she turned herself in.

I don't think Liz doesn't need to be punished further or suffer more in anyone's eyes except those who still can't come to terms with her war against Red. I don't think the writers feel that way about her character. To the contrary, they introduced a hallucinated Kaplan to try to give her a pass and also had her give lengthy explanations to both Ressler and Aram defending her behavior. I think from all I have read and seen that the writers view Liz as a victim of circumstances caused by Red - something Cooper has also articulated to Panabaker along the way in defending why Liz has done what she's done under extraordinary circumstances. We can all agree or disagree on the why and the method and the extremes but the bottom line is that I think the writers still view Liz as more "victim" or "forced criminal" than diabolical villain so killing Ressler, on top of everyone else Liz has lost, is just another deep blow on top of all the blows that have turned her into who she is. I think we're past the point that that is necessary and we'll be even further past that point after 8.21/8.22 when Liz learns some truths.

This has gotten crazy long so I'll just add these final thoughts which I have also articulated in prior posts:

- I think if the writers were going to write out Ressler - an original character from the Pilot - they would do so with more hype and fanfare and story than what he's gotten this season. Sure he was present in 8x19 a lot but it was really Liz's story. She was the heroine saving him and moving them from place to place while he suffered. I think the writers have enough respect for Diego to give him at least as much substantial story as Tom and Samar got in their sendoffs if this was really the end. He's a good guy and a good character and he deserves more than for his final moments to be a quiet fade to black in Vfib in a hospital with only Park present (or even Liz present for a final, vague, goodbye). A show that can't do that isn't a show I'm interested in watching, you know?

- his agents congratulated him on the S9 renewal back when it was announced. Hardly an indicator that a major character is getting jettisoned.

-You'd also think, if he was leaving this season, that he'd be doing more to elevate his profile on social media like he did at the end of Homeland to gear up for a new gig. He's done NOTHING.

-Finally, there has been literally nothing in JB's recent interview with The Blacklist Exposed, any of the BTS, the press, the episode descriptions, the crew photos, or anything else to date to indicate that a major actor/character is leaving. I know people can hide the ball but usually in this show, something slips through. So far - nothing. (No, I don't take Megan's thank you's or wrap party photos that way).

Anyway, hopefully we'll all be here at this time next year (or a few weeks earlier if things are back to normal), analyzing S9 and all that has happened. Thanks for the ask!

I can imagine around this time (post s2 or s3?) the party starts to hold the dnd campaigns at steves house, just cause, well, it's not like they want to bike everywhere anymore, steve has a big living room with an equally big coffee table, plus if they ask him to order pizza, he orders the pizza.

by now the kids know that Steve and Billy are just 'friends', that when billy drops max off he usually ends up staying for a bit, they know that Billy spends a big chunk of the week sleeping at Steve's too, but that's just cause they're best friends, right?

at some point, its probably late at night, Billy is half asleep on the couch watching the party do their thing (which has been going on for 6 hours now) and steve got up for a second to grab them drinks, also half asleep, then the dreaded moment happens. Steve comes back with the drinks, lingering behind the couch to hand billy a can, them proceeded to lean over the back of the couch and kiss billys cheek and squeeze his shoulder, he obliviously rounded the couch to plop down beside billy, and sees the entire party staring at them in shock.

"Wha?-" Steve barely manages to get out before Mike says loudly "Did you just kiss billy?!" and Steve is completely frozen, glancing at Billy who is now wide eyed staring at Steve "uhh did- did I?" at this point steve is desperately trying to play it off, anxiously looking between billy and the party "cause I dont- think I did?". the room erupts with questions and Billy just stands up and walks out, Steve ignoring the parties chaos and immediately following billy out.

billy isnt ashamed to be with steve, it's just a whole wack of internalized homophobia and a fear of neil finding out. cue an argument between steve and billy, cause let's be honest steve does n o t care as much that the party found out, ofc he knew they would freak out but they would never hate him for liking guys, Billy on the other hand is freaking out, hes pissed steve slipped up like that, so he got in his car and drove off.

That leads to steve panicking, thinking he fked up another relationship, that billy is gone for good. but max (who secretly already knew about them, on a night she was supposed to be at els she came home early and caught Steve and billy asleep cuddling in bed) she went to go talk to him, cause she knew he was just scared but ofc theres nothing wrong with this. fast forward in time and steve and billy get to the point of being completely open around the party (Billy makes it gross 99% of the time)
