CHAPTER TWO
“Perri's Letter and Spinel's Revenge”
It was another boring day at school. Today I avoided Steven and Connie, at least until things cool down. Now Perri and I are walking to her house, later going to see Lexi. I suggested we go right after school, but poor Perri had a meltdown when that phone addicted bitch Sophie teased her about liking Lexi. Saying “A spaz like you can't date someone like Lexi Joel. You have a better chance at hooking up with your catnapping psycho of a friend.”
I would have said “go fuck yourself and stuff your mouth with a dumb jocks cock.”But I kept silent to avoid more trouble. Even though she's a threat to my relationship with Steven, she went too far attacking my wittle buddy. After today, she will pay.
“So. How you feeling bud.” I comforted
“A little better Spinel, thank you, for walking with me.” Perri lamented
She didn't seem any better, so I stopped walking and placed my hands on her shoulders. She jolted a little bit, she does that when someone touches her without her knowing, I need to stop doing that.
“Perri, please don't worry about Sophie. She will never bother you again.” I reassured Perri
“You don't know that Spinel, you can't just make her disappear.” Perry doubted
The truth is I can, and I will.
“Just, please trust me okay. She won't hurt you anymore.” I asserted, starting to get annoyed
“I-,hmm. Okay Spinel, I trust you. Now can we please go to my place.” Perri faltered, noticing me getting annoyed.
Even though Perri and I been friends for a while, there were times I lost my shit. One time in elementary 5, Perri had this cute green alien head chewy. Back then Perri would chew on the collar of her shirt, so Brooklyn got it as an alternative. Later, a boy by the name of Ronaldo ask if he could play with it. Perri didn't say anything, she looked away from the fat little shit. He started to get annoyed and grabbed her arm. When I saw tears running down the poor kids face, I said. “Don't touch my fucking friend, she doesn't want to share. So piss of you bitch-ass comic book reading fat pussy.” After I stand up for my nerdy buddy, the little shit started to ball his eyes out. So I got detention for the weekend, and then Grandmother Whitney put a bar of soap in my mouth. She's an amazing Grandmother, but if you push her buttons she can be a mean old hag.
We finally arrive at Perri's place, it's a cute little cabin-like house. With a more rustic style unlike my home, a traditional Japanese minka. Once we walked to the door, we were greeted by the outgoing Brooklyn Fitzgerald. A fierce and friendly soul, who looks out for her friends. She works as a lumberjack at the local saw mill, fell in love with the stubborn lawyer Pearl Harpor and once one first place in the wood chopping competition at the county fair. Brooklyn was always that person you feel comfortable around, she is a great role-model for Perri and always wants the best for her. She's like the cool aunt I never had, and the only adult I feel comfortable around that isn't my family.
“How you doing kids, I made a tray of onigiri for an afternoon snack.” Brooklyn greeted
“Thanks mom, we're here just to get a bite to eat, spinel and I are going to a study group at the library.” Perri replied
Perri doesn't lie often, but she's surprisingly good at it. It's scary if you think about it.
“Well okay Perri, but remember. Always have your phone, come back home before six, and don't walk in Black Hawk Clan territory.” Brooklyn directed
“Well of course mom.” Perri acknowledged while to two of us walk inside
Their house interior was like one of the those shacks in the movie Friday the 13th. Brooklyn kept it very well maintained, she may be a lumberjack but she's a amazing carpenter.
“I'll be back Spinel, I'm just getting some things from my room.” Perri called, going to grab the letter
“Alright Perri.” I concurred while eating some homemade onigiri
“So, umm. Spins, how's Perri doing.” Brooklyn worried, she's not always the serious type. But when she is, you need to listen and shut up.
“She's, okay. Why do you ask?” I denied, having a good feeling what she's going to say.
“I got a call from the school, saying that Perri had a meltdown.” Brooklyn took a deep breath and continued. “Spinel, I know your aware that Perri is a little different than the other kids. She thinks in a different way and does things differently.” Brooklyn fretted
“I think you are aware of this Spinel, but Perri has Autism.” Brooklyn said looking that she's not finished speaking.
I was aware that Perri isn't like other kids, that why I like her. I love that she would ramble on and on about robotics, AI and Elon Musk. I love that she has that burning passion to expand her learning, even if it's just one topic. In a way, Perri's like a little sister to me. I love her because she's unique, not mediocre like those bimbos at school. She's her own person and doesn't follow a crowd.
“There were many incidents that kids would tease her because she's on the spectrum. They would tease her for being jumpy, they would pick on her because she wouldn't play with the other kids. And let's not forget the time a student grabbed her over a god damn chewie.” Brooklyn bawled, on the verge of tears. Even someone as strong as her can feel defeated sometimes.
“I'm scared spinel, I'm scared that my little girl will get herself hurt. After the diagnosis her father couldn't take it and left. Saying that he wanted a normal child with a normal life. Pearl has a hard time dealing with Perri sometimes, but she still cares about her. All I ask is Spinel, please look out for her.”
“Brook, things won't be like this forever. There's a lot of people with autism and live great lives. Overtime they grow and learn how to cope, Perri's still a kid. She's going to be an amazing person one day. Building robots or something. The point is that sometime people outgrow these problems, it's sometimes doesn't bother them or they cope with it. Your very lucky to have a daughter like Perri. You just have to remember that every successful person had those days that they want to give up. But they keep pushing until they reach their goals. Just like Perri.” I monotoned
“You maybe right Spins, Perri has been growing up. It just seems like yesterday she didn't need her chewy anymore.” Brooklyn hoped
“See, everything's going to be okay. Sophie won't bully her anymore, I promise.” I concluded
“Alright Spinel, lets go to the library now. ” Perri intrupted
“Be safe girls, look out for one another.”
It took us 30 minutes by bus to arrive at the Black Hawk clan's main nest, I don't know why they would call it a nest but whatever. Their nest was a giant old warehouse outside of town, it had a barbed wire fence all around the headquarters. Like those fences you see in prisons. There was a giant chain link fence for the entrance, two bikers were guarding it carrying AK-47s.
“Yo what the fuck, you can't be-, ohhhhhh. It's the catnapper. What business do you have with the Black Hawks.” Thug one marveled
“Is that what they're calling me now, it was psycho bitch last week. We don't what any trouble, we just want to see the road captain.”
“Wait are you talking about, Lex. Hah,well Spins, we can't let you just see the road captain. You have to talk to the founder first, she decides not us.” Thug two announced
“Oh for the love of god.” I whispered to myself
“Well, can we see. Fucking, Jasper or someone.” I badgered
These biker act so tough and fearless. But really, their just a bunch of leather-wearing douches.
“Ahhhhh, if it'll make you shut the fuck up then sure. ” thug one complained
The two annoyed thugs opened the gate, Perri and I walk cautiously into the nest.
Inside the warehouse wasn't any better than the outside. On the left side, there was a bar with tables, chairs and stolen arcade game machines. The right side was their business operation, with safes, factory equipment and a security system. Every biker gang has their source of income. It can be drugs,weapons, cigarettes or anything valuable on the yami-ichi.
The Black Hawks are the kingpins in the drug industry, but they don't just sell any type of drug. They created their own drug that is booming in the Japanese black market. It's called Menohoyō, meaning eye-candy in Japanese. Menohoyō is made just like regular eye-drops, because it is eye-drops. The only reason why it's addictive and illegal, is because it's made of 45% of diethylamide. A main chemical component to make LSD. There's been cases all across the world, reaching places like Brazil, United States and even Russia. There has been many gangs and drug cartels trying to replicate this drug, but all of them failed. Today, the Black Hawks dominate the drug industry, even bribing politicians to keep their business running. It's greasy business, that's why I want Lexi to get out when she still has the chance.
In front of us are the three masterminds of the whole operation.
Jasper Alder, the founder of the gang. Sitting on an old puke green recliner and smoking a five inch Pyramid cigar. She was born in Tokyo and was a target for bullying because she has vitiligo. Due to the bullying she became a mean bitch, once she broke a kids arm because she called her giraffe. Later in life, Jasper got into bodybuilding and motorcycles. Causing her to follow the wrong crowd. She got involved in a lot of crazy shit involving rival gangs. Once she turned twenty-three, she created the Black Hawk Clan. She called it that because one day, her father and her were hunting hawks. A giant common black hawk attacked her father and scratched his throat, causing him to bled to death in the middle of the woods. Jasper manage to shot the hawks wing and flew off. For three nights she was searching that hawk. Later found it on the ground near an old Japanese Wisteria. Jasper chose not to put the bird out of its misery, instead she watched it bled out for three minutes. So long story short, she's twenty-five and runs a drug cartel now.
On her left was the president of the clan, Eleanor Monsoon. She was Jasper right-hand gal, those two used to rob gas-stations when they were teens. Eleanor was also known for her great grandfather being in the Imperial guard divisions during WW2. That's where she gets her fierce comanding attitude.
On the right was the Vice President of the clan, Persephone Windsor. Nothing to special about her, all I can say is she's a snobby bitch born in a very rich family, she supply's most of the equipment and weapons. She's a narcissist and a manipulator who will destroy lives to get her way.
“(Puffing a smoke) Well, I didn't expect to see the pip-squeak and the catnapper today. ” Jasper snarled while inhaling on her cigar.
“Let me do the talking Perri, I got this.” I whispered to Perri
“Hi Jasper, hows the gang and so. Also can we talk to Lexi.” I urged, trying to convince the butch
“(Puffing a smoke). Well Spins, if you have business with the road captain you have business with me. Now spill the beans crazy.” Jasper chided
“It has nothing to do with.Business. We want to see Lexi, because-”
“Because I want to get to know her better, and hopefully she'll get out of this dirty, greasy motorcyclist club you call a business.” Perri interrupted me and dared Jasper
Thanks a lot Perri, we're fucked.
“How dare you, a worthless pest like you speaking to the founder like-” Persephone chastised
“Wait. Hold on your saying you want to hangout and bond, with the black hawk clan road captain. Out of all the nerds at your snobby school. You choose an angsty, hot-headed, with drugged up parents and possibly slept with more guys than you know how many bones are in the human body. So tell be spaz, what makes you think a nerd like you, can ever be with someone as fucked up as Lex. Because honestly, you can do better.” Jasper insulted
I saw that Perri was starting to get upset, but instead being sad, she got mad.
“You, you don't know anything. How dare you talk to someone like that, your not any better you, you, you f-f-fucking clod.” Perri exploded
It would take a tiny miracle to get us out of this shit.
However, the three bikers looked at each other with confusion. There was a silent pause, until.
“...............Haaaahahahahahahahaha.hhaaaaaaahaaahahahaahahahahhaaaahahah.” The three clan leaders burst with laughter
Perri expression turned back to sadness, trying to hold in her tears.
“Hahahaaahhaa, is,haha, is that the best you got tiny,hahhahaha. That's fucking pathetic, hahaha. Oh look at me, I WUV Lexi, hahaha.” Jasper mocked
I could see Perri starting to sob, I wanted to say something but that would be a suicide mission.
“Perri and Lexi sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-” the three clan leaders laughed and mocked
“What the fuck is happening, it's like a fucking circus in here. ” Lexi interrupted
Thank God she's here
“Perri, Spinel. What are you guys doing here.” Lexi gasped
“We were going to see you, until these donkey's stop us from doing so.” I explained
Lexi then turned her attention to the brainy-baby.
“Hey, hey, hey. Perri, my dude. I'm here, it's okay.” Lexi tried comforting Perri
“(Whimpering) it's good to see you again rockstar.” Perri sniffled
“It's good to see you to buddy.” Lexi sympathized
Lexi then turned her attention to the three douches
“What the fuck did you three do.” Lexi accused
“Lex, know your place. You do not bark at me, or I'm sending you back on the streets like the runt you are. ” Jasper retaliated
“Well I guess you have to put be back on the fucking streets, because no one talks to my friends like that.” Lexi condemned
It warms my cold heart to see Lex care so much for Perri, it's so sweet.
“Ah you fucking bitch, alright. You can see your, friend now.(inhaling on her cigar).” Jasper said in defeat
“Come on Perri, is there something you wanted to tell me.” Lexi adviced
“One second Lexi.” Perri protested
She turned her direction towards me, running up to me and giving me a hug. It was a tight hug, like a bear hug.
“You are the greatest friend in the world, I'm so lucky to have met you.” Perri chirped
I still didn't understand this platonic affection, this is the second time in a row, and I don't feel anything. My heart feels heavy and silent, there's no emotion. Why am I like this.
But to make her feel better, I hugged her back.
It lasted for 3 minutes, everyone in the warehouse was staring at us. But I didn't care, as long as she's happy.
She finally let go and walk towards Lexi, both of them waving goodbye to me. I guess it wasn't such a bad day after all.
“Hold on Spinel, just a minute.” Jasper asserted
I spoke to soon.
“Even though I'm letting your friend hang with the road captain, you still have to do something for me in return. ” Jasper decided
“Jasper. I can't be your drug mule.” I stated
“Don't worry your panties off, your not delivering drugs. I've chosen something that you may like. Do you know Sophie Turner.” Jasper explained
“What about her.”
“She hasn't been paying her IOU's for the Menohoyō's she's been buying for her parties. She keeps saying “My dad is rich, I'll get your money, stop bugging me, bla bla bla.” So because of her I'm losing money, she's my top buyer in Akuma no tochi. So what I need you to do is, take her out.” Jasper offered
Well isn't that pure irony.
“I think I can do that Jasper, but I'm going to need some equipment.” I demanded
“Sure, anything. You just can't tell the clan was involved.” Jasper added
“I need a hacksaw, trash bags, bleach, cleaning supplies, nails and the key to the saw mill.” I listed
“Done. Go to our SGT at arms, Ruth. She'll get you what you need. Remember Spinel, this never happened.” Jasper concluded
Once I reached the exit, a familiar voice called out for me.
“Spinel, Wait. I want to talk to you!”
Well what do you know, I thought Ryan was the last person who would talk to me here.
“Listen Spinel, I did some thinking and wanted to apologize about yesterday. I took my frustrations out on you, it was wrong. I should have never called you runner-tits, your a beautiful, smart girl. One day, some very lucky guy will meet you. I'm sorry.” Ryan apologized
I didn't expect someone like Ryan to say that, it took a lot of guts to admit something like that. I respect that.
“I forgive you Ryan, no hard feelings.”
“Thank you Spinel, I'll let you go now. But remember, the Black Hawks have your back.” Ryan thanked
“Your welcome, I'll see you around.”
It is time, time to give that bitch what she deserves. Good thing I didn't give all that birthday cake to the meow-meows.
I finally arrive to Sophie's place, no ones home but her. I have everything I need to silence her for good. And it all starts with a piece of cake.
I walked to her door and placed a small pink box on the doorstep. I knocked on the door and hid behind a bush.
“Hello, is some out there. Justin you better not be fucking with me.” Sophie cautioned
“Oh, what's this. (opens the box) aww, it's a piece of cake. I guess Justin isn't a dick after all. ”
Sophie picked up the cake from the box and went back inside, without locking the door. I quietly snuck in behind her, when I found out that she took the bait. I always make the best cakes, thanks to Momma. But for this special occasion, I added my secret ingredient.
I saw her take the first bite, then the second, and finally the third. Until she took her fourth bite.
“Mmmh mhhhh- ACK,ACK. Gahh. Barf.” Sophie said while gagging and puking blood
That's right, the secret ingredient os nails. I placed a couple of small nails in the sweet-treat, hoping it would tear her esophagus apart.
“Aww, did poor wittle Sophie bit off more than she could chew.” I teased her while kneeling down beside her.
“Who's a spaz now bitch. I would have came for your ass later. But you had to pick on my wittle buddy. That's one step to far.” I rasped
I looked at her in disgust while watching her struggle to breathe. This was the first human I ever killed, I'm tired of releasing my pain on cats. Taking them from their owners, putting them in a bag, and slamming that said bag onto the concrete floor! Who ever knew inflicting pain on someone like her can feel so, pleasurable. Reliving. The pure horror in their eyes fills my desire, my desire to butcher these whores that stand in my way. I shouldn't have done this sooner.
“ACK ACK ACK, gahh. Fuck youu, you psychotic cun-(pukes blood). Barf. Huff, puff, huff, puff. Huff...ack....ack...ack.........ah.” Sophie cried her last words.
“Just so you know, it's homemade not store bought.” I joked
Well that took longer than I expected. I had to saw her in ten part, bag them, clean the floor, bleach the floor, dispose any evidence, take the body parts to the saw mill and shred them up. I also had to burn my cloths as well, at least I brought a spare set. But it all ended smoothly. I got my revenge, and now only five more rivals to go. Perri can now see Lexi anytime, I hope they worked out, they'll make a cute couple. Even though school sucked ass at least it ended on a positive note. Now time to go home, and great my amazing famil-.
“Hey. Spinel.”
Okay who could that be.
I turned around wanting to know whose behind me. And oh fuck I wish didn't. This day was perfect for Perri and I, and she's the last person I wanted to see, God damn it!
“Hello Spinel”
“Hello. Connie.”

TW: Mention of suicide attempt 
Stanley pushed a mixtape that Richie made for him into his car stereo. The House That Built Me by Miranda Lambert plays softly on the winding road to Ben Hanscom’s house for a Losers Club sleepover. The fiery sun rolls down the sky, painting a trail of pink on a pastel blue blanket. Barely-visible stars blink, sprinkles across the yellow sky. Stanley unrolled his window to hear the chirping crickets that no one else in all of Derry slowed down to listen to. 
At a stoplight, Stanley took a package of mint gum from the car’s cup holder. He unwrapped the flimsy strip of candy and folded it onto his tongue. Stanley checked his rear view mirror, keeping an eye on the full moon as it approached him. He was a good driver. He picked up the skill the day he got behind the wheel. He kept a rigid posture, hyper-aware every time a green light would flick on, gripping the wheel with both hands. 
On the other hand, Stan Uris’s best friend, Richie Tozier, was the exact opposite. Stan always made fun of him before they turned fifteen. (“I’m terrified to see you behind the wheel, Trashmouth, there’s gonna be a lot of lives lost!”) He’d joke. The two loved to joke. Richie and Stanley shot rebuttal after rebuttal, teasing each other whenever possible. In their teenage years of mood swings and raging testosterone, the reckless kids loved poking fun at one another. Their shield of an ego would protect them from such “love-filled” words. Stanley’s ego though, slowly crumbled, and his confidence too. He had to build a shield—a wall—out of something else. 
The Miranda Lambert song ended as Vienna by Billy Joel began. A smirk appeared on the lone driver’s face as the opening piano blinked through the speaker. 
“Slow down you crazy child. You’re so ambitious for a juvenile…” He hummed, moving his head to the rhythm. Not quite bopping or swaying, but a healthy middle ground, “Why are you still so afraid? Hmm…” 
Stanley let the crinkling piano and gentle vocals set around him as he subconsciously drove slower, reaching the Hanscoms’ neighborhood. He twisted the steering wheel, to prolong his drive. Stanley hated to stop in the middle of a song. Especially such a masterpiece as Vienna. His tires grazed the road until the song finished. He found his way to Ben’s house, nearing the song’s end. The same crinkling piano that opened the melody also closed it, prompting Stan to turn off the engine.
He noticed Barn Boy Mike Hanlon’s truck, similar to Richie’s pick-up in the driveway. He thought about Mike. He never understood the boy. Stan couldn’t resist rolling his eyes or making some passive aggressive comments sometimes, but Mike kept silent for minutes and more at a time. He reclined in the comfort of seeing his friends smile or share banter. Mike would blush under his dark skin at the sound of their laughter. Sometimes, Stan thought Mike Hanlon knew more about any of the Losers than the rest of them did. Other times, he prayed he didn’t. 
Stanley saw Beverly Marsh’s beat-up wagon of a car too. He got out of his car and went to examine the rusty thing. Beverly drove well. Her reflexes never failed her; she knew the moves of every driver around her; and she had the second most driving experience of the group, (first being Bill.) The thing was that she inherited the car from her dad after he stopped driving. The alcoholic got his license confiscated and left his car to Daddy’s Little Girl. Stanley bent to see a broken windshield wiper and examine the chipped paint. 
He assumed Eddie may already have arrived since the boy hated driving and lived within walking distance of Ben’s anyway. He finally decided to find out, hoping from Beverely’s car to the steps up to Ben’s front door. He knocked three times and stepped back, flexing up and down on his toes. Excitement ran through his veins whenever the Losers were about to meet up. 
“Hey!” Ben’s bright grin lifted his cheekbones. Ben was a chubby kid, but way more handsome than most of the fit kids at school. His hair always fell into the perfect place unlike anyone in the Bowers Gang. His eyes shone with gratitude. He looked like someone who should be in a toothpaste commercial, where at the end a little sparkle effect was added to his smile. 
“Ben, hey!” Stanley smiled back at his friend. Richie and Beverly both called Ben Hanscom “Ben Handsome” at some point behind his back. Beverly always loved plays on words. Ben once wrote Beverly a sloppy haiku entitled “January Embers.” Richie was the first person Beverly told about her crush on the golden-hearted boy, over a few cigarettes, a good month after the one-hit-wonder wrote: 
Your hair is winter fire 
January Embers 
My Heart burns there too
Their stuttering friend, Bill Denbrough, loved words as well. He wrote a lot in journals no one dared to read. Pencils don’t stutter, so when he wasn’t around the Losers, he built pages upon pages of expression. Bill had it bad for Beverly, but Ben Handsome got the girl first. Stan hated himself for being glad about it. 
Stan peaked inside, hearing a movie, some arguing, and bubbly laughter. 
“Come on in!” Ben pulled him inside. We’re watching Back to The Future. Kind of…” he trailed off, leading him to the living room. 
“All I’m saying is,” Eddie stubbornly argued, with sharp hand gestures to prove his point, “You can’t not have a backstory for a friendship! How the hell did Marty McFly and this stupid scientist guy meet? They clearly didn’t meet at school! Doc isn’t Marty’s dad or grandfather! You can’t just give us nothing!” Eddie stuck to his strict opinions on things.
“Eddie, it’s just a movie!” Beverly chuckled, crunching down on some popcorn. “Calm down.” 
Mike rolled his eyes with the widest grin on his face. As the rest of the Losers Club barely tolerated Eddie’s hard opinions, Mike enjoyed the supervised chaos. 
“That’s what I’m saying! It’s a shit movie!” Eddie leaned back on a dark blue pillow, against a white couch. 
“Woah, woah, we don’t talk shit about Back to The Future!” Stanley spoke up as he entered the living room. Ben smiled. 
“Maybe you don’t,” he shrugged, “I think the movie is trash!” he complained. 
“I’ve got an idea,” Beverly snatched the remote from the table and turned the TV off, earning three groans and one silent ‘thank you’ from her friends, “Who wants to play truth or dare?” Those groans were replaced with cheers. 
“Are we gonna wait for Richie and B-B-Bill?” Stan mocked Bill Denbrough’s stutter. He was only allowed to do so because they’ve been best friends since practically birth. He fumbled with the sleeve of his hoodie, sitting next to Eddie Kaspbrak. His lanky frame reclined against the leather piece of furniture. 
“I guess,” Ben shrugged, “I’ll download a truth or dare app in the meantime.” 
“We’re using an app?” Stanley laughed. 
Eddie jumped at his opportunity to insult his friend, “Well, you couldn’t use your brain. We all know the saying ‘can’t use what you don’t have.’” 
“That was a trash comeback,” Stan commented, fumbling with his Star of David necklace. He admired Eddie’s unwillingness to not chime in. 
“You’re a trash comeback!” the boy crossed his arms with raised eyebrows. 
Stanley furrowed his eyebrows, “What?” 
“FBI, open up!” Richie boomed, kicking at the door.
“We brought s-s-snacks!” Bill’s soft normal-pitched, stuttering voice chimed in. 
Ben marched to the door to welcome the conclusion of the group inside, “Hi!” Ben made way for the two, brushing his blond bangs from his eyes. 
“What’s up, Losers?” Richie stepped inside, pacing to the usual meeting spot; Ben’s living room. He dropped a shopping bag of snacks near the couch as the Losers crowded around it like starved wolves in a pack. Really, that’s what they were; a pack. 
“We were just about to play some truth or dare,” Mike informed, “For recap, Eddie’s been bashing on every little detail of Back to The Future and Stanley is a trash comeback.” 
“That doesn’t even make sense.” Stanley scoffed. 
“He’s also in love with Bill,” Mike added, making Stanley’s eyes go wide. “What are your sources? Aren’t you supposed to be the smart one?” This was one of those moments he severely hoped Mike didn’t know Stanley more than he knew himself. Truly, Stan didn’t know himself at all. He lost it somewhere in his mind and figured he may find it later. Perhaps, like an innovator digging through a dumpster, trying to find parts and pieces, he’d create something; bring it to life one day. 
“You’re the Jewish one,” Richie poked Stanley’s shoulder. “Aren’t you supposed to be, like, mad intelligent?” 
“Just mad.” Stan rolled his eyes. 
The one thing he knew for sure about himself was that he had his secret which was the fact that Mr. Uris had no interest in women. He liked Bill as more than a friend since they were fourteen years old. The Losers were sixteen and seventeen now and he couldn’t kill the butterflies in his stomach when Stuttering Bill’s lips curled into a smile. 
“The app’s downloaded if you guys are ready to play,” Ben held up his phone, showcasing the title screen of the application. 
“I’m ready!” Beverly excitedly raised her hand. 
“Me t-too,” Bill’s gentle voice followed Bev’s sharp one. The rest of the group ad-libbed ‘yes’s and ‘ready’s. 
Ben has a very nice house. Marble floors matching the marble island in his kitchen, a nice white couch with navy pillows to go with the white walls, accented with dark blue trim. He had a wood-and-glass coffee table too, separating the couch and the TV. It was comfy. 
Ben shooed everyone into the office, closed away from the living room with white french doors. There was a desk in the back of the room and shelves with books and comics and journals, displayed along the walls. The well-lit room had a shaggy carpet on top of the cold floor.
The Losers gradually made their way into a circle. Counter-clockwise, starting by the back of the room was Ben, then Beverly, then Eddie, then Richie, then Stan, then Bill, then Mike, then back to Ben. 
“Alright,” Ben started, looking at Beverly, “Miss Marsh, Truth or Dare?” 
“Dare!” her eyes glowed. The brave girl, far more chivalrous than any of the “men” in the room, loved adventures and thrills. Stanley insisted they call him a ‘man’ because of his bar mitzvah that barely happened. Bill and Mike were the real men of the house, but they both tied with Beverly even at that. The ‘dare’ part of truth or dare was a piece of cake.
Ben clicked the ‘dare’ button, “I dare you to put ice cubes down your shirt and leave them there until they melt,” he read with an amused expression. 
“Son of a bitch,” Beverly heaved herself up, the key on her necklace jingling. She opened the door, “How many should I get?” 
“Just grab a cup and we’ll see what happens,” Ben answered, offering a smile toward her, picking at the fabric of his hoodie. Beverly nodded and went off. 
“A whole cup?” Eddie’s eyes went wide. 
“Yes sir,” Ben nodded. Ben was not at all the evil type, even in truth or dare. The Losers dubbed him the ‘sweetheart.’ As long as everyone was safe and comfortable though, he enjoyed a bit of excitement, just like Mike did. Mike supervised all the shenanigans the group got into. Unlike him, Ben had no control over what happened. He liked to dip his toes into the pool of chaos nonetheless. 
Beverly arrived back, a full cup, shaking with ice cubes. She smiled and held one of the frozen squares to showcase it for the group, “There’s at least fifteen in here.” 
The Losers waited in anticipation and Beverly sighed. Her overalls would certainly keep the cubes in place. She slid the ice down the back of her shirt with a wince, “One.” 
She counted out the rest, managing to keep her breathing steady as the sharp temperature nipped at her back. 
“N-No one a-asked you to do a-a-all sixteen,” Bill reminded, an amused grin on his face. 
“That was the dare!” She shivered. 
“Actually,” Ben took a sharp inhale and showed the phone screen, “It never specified how many. It said ‘ice cubes’ in the plural, but could have just been referring to two.” This was a time that Beverly was not so much a fan of words. 
The red-headed Beverly deadpanned Bill and flipped him off. She had gorgeous red hair that used to hug her neck, but after cutting it short, it curled into the air around her as a pixie style. The only similarity was the color which matched the freckles sprinkled about her face and arms. 
“Why b-be mad at me? B-B-Ben’s the one who m-mmm-made you get a full cuh-cup!” Bill giggled, playing as if he were ‘oh, so offended.’ 
“I’m in so much discomfort,” she squirmed as she sat down, the ice numbing her lower back, “Okay, Eddie, truth or dare?” Ben passed on the phone after hitting ‘dare complete.’ Beverly earned one point for her troubles. 
“Truth,” he answered. 
“Pussy!” Richie taunted, “Just kidding, I love you, you fucking pussy-ass-coward.” Eddie huffed and looked to Beverly who now had Ben’s phone. 
“Who, out of the people in this room, is your least favorite?” she read with a smirk and curious eyes. 
“Richie,” he answered without a hesitation, making a grab for the phone. 
“Bitch, please, we all know you guys are gay for each other,” Stan called, receiving an exasperated blush from Eddie and a cackle from Richie. 
“That’s not true! I fucking hate him and his stupid face!” Eddie covered. 
Beverly kept the phone hostage, “I’ve got a better truth: Who do you have a crush on Eddie?” her direct eye contact intimidated the asthmatic. 
“I already answered a question!” he made another attempt for the phone, “That’s how the game works, you get one truth per turn!” 
“Nah-ah!” She pointed, “Come on…” 
“Richie’s, like, worse than Stan!” Eddie defended himself, “I wouldn’t date him if my life depended on it.” 
Ouch. Stanley thought, but found comfort in being on a higher ranking than Tozier. 
“Oh come on, I’m not so terrible!” Richie reasoned. “Are you saying you’d rather date Stan the Man Uris than this?” he posed, puckering his lips. 
“Gross, Rich.” Eddie’s nose turned up in disgust. “I’m not dating either of you.” he crossed his arms.
“Beep, beep, b-b-both of y-yyy-you.” Bill brushed his shoulder against Stanley. Something about it seemed non-accidental. 
“Richie, Truth or Dare?” Eddie turned to him. 
“I’m not on speaking terms with you,” Richie crossed his arms. 
“Oh, come on, I was kidding!” he admired Richie’s attempt to not burst into giggles. Eddie sighed and kissed Richie’s cheek, whispering a ‘no homo’ which received a wolf-whistle from Mike. “Truth or dare, you stupid bitch.” He took out a bottle of hand sanitizer from his fanny pack and applied it like a chapstick. 
“Dare,” the flustered and confused boy stated. 
Eddie took a second to click on the ‘dare’ button and read the task, “Ew, this one’s gross, I’m not reading it.” 
“What?” Richie whined. “I bet it’s fine!” he strived to take the phone. 
“You’re not licking the fucking floor, Richie.” Eddie snatched the phone away from Richie’s reach.
“Gross!” Beverly made vomiting noises. “Was that the dare?” she asked, earning a wrinkled nose and a nod from Eddie.
“Um?” Bill’s eyebrows furrowed, “Is n-no one paying at-t-tention to that k-kiss?”
“Just let ‘em do their thing,” Stan looked at Bill, wishing he could do the same to the blue-eyed boy. He’d imagined kissing Bill. He’d imagined holding his hand, cuddling, going on dates, pursuing a relationship, dancing, anything.  
“I f-fucking knew it!” Bill celebrated. Stanley couldn’t help but blush at the gleam in his crush’s eyes.
“It’s okay, guys, he said ‘no homo,’” Richie put his hands up in innocence. He thought for a second about the dare. “I’ll lick the floor though.” he shrugged.
“I can’t believe I’d rather watch you--” Eddie read off a new dare, “--Twerking for 60 seconds to a song of the group’s choosing.” 
“Please for the love of God do Please Don’t Go Girl!” Ben cackled, having the song stuck in his head all day.
“No!” Bev whined, “Babe, that’s our song! I don’t want to be dancing with you one night and end up thinking of Richie’s ass.” 
Stanley could only be jealous. Not because he wanted to dance with Beverly or Ben, but because he wanted someone to dance with. He looked over at his crush, envisioning Bill’s hands on Stanley’s hips and Stanley’s on Bill’s shoulders. 
“You’re right, you’re very right.” Ben nodded. “I vote You Got It then.” 
“Ben, no one wants to twerk to your New Kids in The Block trash.” Richie urged, pushing his glasses higher onto his nose. 
Ben pouted, whispering a correction, “It’s On The Block. Not In.”
“Whatever.” Richie said. “Can I please do Crazy Frog?” 
“Why don’t we pick something nice like Frank Sinatra?” Mike suggested ignoring Richie’s proposal. 
“Crazy Frog it is!” Eddie decided, cueing up music on his own phone. 
Beverly bopped her head, trying to hype Eddie into doing the same next to her. He just laughed along with her refusing to dance. Mike made another wolf-whistle as Richie twerked--poorly. Bill pretended to slide dollar bills off his hands at Richie. “Yeah! That’s my be-be-best f-friend!” He cheered.
Stanley admired how Bill encouraged him, even while doing a terrible job. He wouldn’t dare to be brave like Richie, but he hoped that if he was, Bill would be just as proud. Maybe even wear the same goofy smile. 
At the one minute mark, Eddie paused the music. “Who else is mentally scarred from that?” Five loser-hands all shot into the air. 
“Fuck you, fuck all of you.” Richie sat as the crowd booed him offstage. He failed to refrain from laughing. “Stanley, your turn.” he nudged him once Eddie handed him the phone. “Truth or dare?” 
He glanced in Bill’s direction, but decided not to fully look at Bill. “Dare.” he swallowed. 
“Ooh, unexpected!” Beverly grinned, spinning around to lay on her stomach. She put her elbows on the floor and her chin in her hands to observe. 
“Oh-ho-ho, you ain’t gonna believe this one, laddie!” Richie plastered an Australian, maybe slightly pirate-ish accent. “Feast yer eyes!” he shoved the screen in Stanley’s face causing the boy to squint and retract his head.
“Could you maybe like…” he brought the phone to a distance he could see. “What’s it s-ss-say?” Bill asked him. 
“Let the group go through your phone, sixty seconds each.” Stanley recited the line. “Easy, I guess, yeah.” he nodded. Off the top of his head, he couldn’t think of any embarrassing text messages or photos. Stanley was a clean kid. “Did you wanna go first?” he handed it off to Richie, “We can just go clockwise?” 
“You got it, chap!” Richie took the phone, “Which one of ye rascals’ll set up a time ticker for the gang?” he looked up. 
Mike pulled out his phone and went to the timer app, “I've got it. One minute is on the clock… and…” He glanced up to each member of the group. Everyone leaned forward in anticipation, “Go!” he initiated. 
“I’m going to the messages!” Richie declared and scrolled. The room erupted in instructions and suggestions, “Let’s see what Stanley is talking about with his dad…” Richie read a few messages out loud about handing in homework and test grades. He was doing relatively well in school, earning a congrats and a high five from Mike, across Bill’s torso. They studied sometimes together and both aced an English test no one else passed. 
Richie got bored of reminders about school and his dad asking about Torahs that would always go missing from Rabbi Uris’s office. (“Dad, why in the name of Baruch Atah Adonai would I take six Torahs and keep it a secret?”) He went to messages between him and Mike. “Why were you and Mike sending memes back and forth at three a.m.?”
“As opposed to nudes? No, thanks man.” Stan tilted his head. 
“I bet I’ll find some, somewhere here.” Richie laughed, reading three funny memes out loud before the timer rang. 
“Pass it on!” Eddie held out his hand. Eddie looked at the rest of the memes, saying most of them outloud. Laughter roared from the group. 
After Eddie spent his whole turn looking at Mike and Stan’s meme collection and Stanley calmed down a bit, he passed the phone to Beverly who passed it onto Ben. Ben passed on to Mike and Mike passed on to Bill. Stanley was almost completely calm by now. He was laughing along with the group. They made fun of Ben for sending Stanley drafts of poems that he wanted his friend to review before giving Beverly.
He had very little anxiety about them finding something personal since none of them yet came across something bad. He was just almost home free. 
“I’m guh-guh-guh-going into your sss-search histor-r-ry,” Bill declared. 
Richie cackled, “Why didn’t I think about that?” he huffed. Stanley’s eyes went wide, “What? No, that’s gotta be, like, illegal!” he reasoned. He was terrified of being outed. He knew he’d been doing research in the past week about if being gay was actually a bad thing. Gay quizzes, gay research, gay history, why gay? 
His mind raced: What if they hate me? What if they don’t want me around anymore? He loved being a loser because “you had nothing to lose” but he did. If he lost the losers, he truly did have nothing left but himself. That’s the thing he hated most. 
“So, you’re hi-hiding s-ss-s-something then?” he teased, looking to Bill to start the timer. 
“What would I be hiding?” Stan asked, before quickly adding: “Bill, don’t you dare, I’m actually begging you,” he could hear his heart pounding in his throat. What if Bill came across something terribly worse than Stanley imagined? The feeling sank in his stomach as his heart rose into his throat. 
“And I’m a-a-a-actually going into y-your ss-s-search history,” Bill rebutted, “Hey, if I f-f-find your wwweird p-porn, I won’t say it ah-ah-out loud.” The group laughed. Stan chuckled as his heart sank a little deeper, because he knew it would be far from pornography. 
“Fuck you, man,” Stan flipped him off
“F-fuck you!” Bill’s face scrunched up. 
“Sorry, I’m too busy fucking your mom!” Richie chimed in. He watched Eddie and Stan roll their eyes in unison. He saw Bill’s blue brown irises glowing almost white with the light of the phone.
“I w-w-won’t go into yyy-your search histor-r-y,” Bill bluffed. “Start the t-t-timer.” 
“Thanks.” 
“It just makes us all the more curious, Stanley,” Mike reminded him. He raised his eyebrow. Stanley did not like that gesture. 
“Yeah, well,” Stan brushed it off, looking at Bill. 
“Three, two, one!” Mike began the timer, officially. 
Bill typed his way into Stan’s history to silently be met with a few things. Stan glanced down at the phone. 
“Billiam, you bitch!” he reached for the phone. Bill deflected this turning his arm away. Stanley lunged at him but the boy dodged and stood up, reading out some searches, “From last night: Lots uh-uh-of reddit… Some songs… l-lll-lyrics… F-facebook… That’s a lot of s-s-swear words in Heb-b-brew.” his eyes widened.
“Stan, please!” Bill whisper-begged, an itching at his lungs brewed up. 
The Losers snickered along, all oblivious. Richie chanted “Fight! Fight! Fight!” as Stanley got on top of him to wrestle the phone away. 
“Bill,” Mike warned. He hated to see Stanley so panicked and used a stern voice, “Billy, hang on, I don’t think you should…” 
“H-how to t-t-tie a tie?” (“Stan you can’t tie a tie?”) Richie taunted Stanley from inches away. Bill was barely focused on the words, just Stan’s priceless yet genuinely desperate reactions.
“What is-” Bill’s voice shut down for a good second. He looked at Stanley’s, coughing once, then a few more times, almost clearly stalling. Can you overdose on melatonin? How many milligrams of melatonin can the brain handle? What is the suicide hotline number? Followed by other related searches to pull the tears from one's eyes and drain the color from one's face. They met eye contact, exchanging a thousand words before Beverly said,
“Bill? What is it?” she leaned forward, now more concerned than gossipy.
“I-I sh-shh-shhh-shouldn’t,” Bill turned Stanley’s phone off and returned it to him. He sighed. This brought some brief attention to the distressed boy. Stan’s throat tensed as if he were on the brink of vomiting. Gravity seemed to pull his chest together, tightening and tightening and tighter, and he was almost sure he’d close into himself if it continued. 
“What?” Eddie eyebrows furrowed, “What was on there?” he leaned his chin out at Stanley, the curiosity burning him up like one of the Bev’s cigarettes. 
Stanley put his hands up like a robber who’d just been caught with a bad, bad crime. As if a pack of police officers surrounding him all had guns, pointing shiny red lights at his vulnerable, unprotected chest. A light-headedness pressured him and his blood ran cold--Cold enough to re-freeze the ice in Beverly’s shirt.
“Bill?” Beverly sat upright, no longer relaxed on the floor, prompting his name, more as a search for a solution than a question. 
“I sh-shh-shouldn’t s-sa-say.” Bill stammered, much to Stanley’s delight. “P-p-per-per-p-personal.” 
The guns were still up, but this time, Bill was his bulletproof vest. Granted, he never tried on such a shield before, so he wasn’t sure how good it’d work, but he had something. 
“Is it something we should worry about?” Richie looked from Stan to Bill, indecisively. “Give us something, guys.”
Stanley shook his head with an instant, “No,” he answered, “Just personal.” 
Mike nodded, “And we respect that. Right guys?” he asked the group, as a pleasant reminder to lower their firearms and let the guilty man free.
Stanley gave both Mike and Bill separate thankful expressions. 
After a good minute of calming down, Bill still had the remains of thoughts flowing through his mind. Can you overdose on melatonin? What is the suicide hotline number? Can you overdose on melatonin? What is the suicide hotline number?
The group continued. Ben spilled the beans on how long it took for him to write January Embers and Bev gushed over him for the rest of the night. (“Babe, you spent a whole hour on seventeen syllables? That’s so cute!”) 
Bill tapped his nails on the floor. Stanley watched his anxious hand. “I’ll be right back,” Stanley stood up, “I’m gonna go to the bathroom,” he was met with a few nods and ‘ok’s. He had been dared to chug a whole can of soda in one gulp so no one blamed him. After Stanley shut the office door, Bill propped up. 
“I’m gonna be right back too,” he got up and followed. Stanley turned around at hearing the door open. He typically would feel butterflies in his stomach and blush in Bill’s presence, but after Stanley’s dare, he couldn’t think of a person he wanted to see less. 
“Hi,” he waved, “What’s up?” he walked toward the bathroom, Bill following. 
“C-can we t-t-t-talk?” Bill proposed, searching Stanley’s posture for any clues of expression. Stan turned around to face him, making the job easier. 
“Sure…” he prayed it wouldn’t be about the searches, but he knew, somehow, that he’d run out of luck for the day, “About…?” 
“I’m s-s-sss-sorry for still guh-guh-going into your hi-h-h-hi-history when you were c-c-clearly upset ab-b-b-bout it,” he started, looking between Stanley’s right and left eye, unsure of which one to make eye contact with. “I d-d-didn’t think i-i-i-i-it’d be that ssss-s-serious, I juh-juh-juh-just thought th-that…” he searched for words he didn’t prepare before hand, “Well, I d-d-don’t know wuh-wuh-what I thought b-but I just d-d-d-didn’t really c-consider how you f-fe-fe-felt and I’m sorry.” 
“Stanley, it’s okay, it’s a game as far as everyone knows, right?” Stanley touched his shoulder. Bill was stressed to say the least. Thin balloons clustered in his mind, all filling up with helium and popping loudly at different times. All the colors of this loud, wild rainbow. He needed answers he was too scared to ask for. 
“I’m- Is th-th-th-there- D-d-d-do you really fff-f-fe-feel like you wuh-want to d-d-d-d…?” it took a good ten seconds of ‘d-d-d’ before Stanley realized he wouldn’t be able to finish. 
“I got help,” Stan cut him off, “It means the world that you care, but I promise I’ll be okay.” Bill shook his head. That just wouldn’t do. 
“F-f-from whom?” the boy demanded. 
“Uh- you know, just- people. You know?” he stammered. At least he wasn’t worse than Bill at this point.
“Th-that’s a l-lll-lie,” Bill pointed out, “St-Sta-Stanley, have you t-t-told your p-p-p-parents about this? You c-c-c-can’t- You have to g-guh-get help. A-actual help, like p-p-profff-fessional shit or m-mmm-m-medicine,” Bill told him. It was not a suggestion, but a fact.
“No, I don’t,” the words rolled off of Stanley’s tongue, with perfect diction, “I can just… promise real hard to be safe?” he suggested. “I wouldn’t break a promise to you.” he shook his head, tapping the scar on his hand from their blood oath. 
“Stan, p-p-please,” Bill decided on Stanley’s left eye to stare at, “You’ve guh-guh-got to t-t-tell your p-parents, or- or I will,” he threatened. 
Stanley shook his head, “Bill, for the love of God. Literal God. Please keep this a secret,” he begged him, his anxiety spiking once again. 
“We ca-ca-can’t keep this a sss-s-secret.” he spoke, slowly and calmly, though Bill Denbrough was anything but that. 
“Please, Bill!” he reasoned, “I’ll actually do anything at all. I swear. I don’t want my parents to worry. I don’t want them to know everything and then never leave me alone about it.” He breathed. “I don’t want them to treat me differently or treat me like I can’t be alone!” 
“I’m nnn-n-not taking no for an answer on this wuh-wuh-one,” Bill decided. Every plea Stanley made only pushed Bill to give in, but he knew better. The two of them were tense. Anxiety sparked between the two of them when all Stanley wanted was a spark of love, not tragedy. Each word tasted like gasoline. Stanley had a lighter. He could easily mix the two. 
“I’ll work on it on my own!” he put his pinky out, “I promise! I really promise. I swear, Bill. I swear on my life.” They shared a collective thought. “I swear on your life. I can do it on my own!” 
“Stan,” his tone lowered as something clicked in his mind, “You don’t have to do it on your own,” he abandoned his coercive method instead, and approached gently, “I ha-ha-have no idea what I would do if- if maybe one day I woke up and you didn’t. Or what if… I missed my chance to say that I really appreciate you. Or if I never got to go to the quarry with you. Or give you another hug. Or tell you all the- a-a-a-all th-thh-” he huffed as his stutter made an ugly return. 
“Bill, I promise, I’m okay, I promise,” Stanley repeated for him. He heard laughter from the group, but the joy from the closed off room did not seem to reach either of the teens. 
“N-n-no, juh-just-” He took a deep breath. “I n-need-” Another breath. A breath so clear and refreshing that Eddie Kaspbrak would be jealous. “Stanley, I need you to know that I love you. That… not just friendship. I guess. Like the real, romantic, I want to be near you all the time. I want to make you smile and I want to dance with you and take away all your pain until I can just see you smile, type of love. I want to write you poems like Ben does for Beverly. And even if that never happens, I don’t know what I’d do if you didn’t know it.” Bill stared at Stanley, almost frozen. He couldn’t find it in him to move or speak to him. He listened. 
Stanley had been hit with something he never experienced before. His stomach turned and his mind fuzzed; those butterflies were back. His eyebrows furrowed, lip jaw just barely dropped, which turned into a smile. Time passed too quickly and he knew he was wasting time, standing still. 
“I- wow,” he raised his eyebrows. “Bill, can I give you a dare?” he swallowed, as Bill nodded. 
“I dare you to kiss me and then hug me for a really long time.” Stanley grinned.
Without hesitation, Bill slinked his hand onto Stanley’s jaw and collided his lips chapped with Stanley’s soft ones. Stan imagined if Mike saw, he’d do another one of his famous wolf-whistles. 
Stanley pulled away and smiled, “I feel the same way you do,” he whispered as Bill pulled him in again--not for a kiss, but for the promised hug, “I have for a while.” 
“Wuh-wuh-will you b-be my b-b-buh-buh-buh-boyf-friend?” Bill asked as his face lit up, unable to contain his excitement. The butterflies in his stomach were replaced with fireworks and a grin permanently planted on his face. 
Stanley hugged him tighter, burying his forehead in Bill’s neck. “Fuck yeah.”
Bill closed his eyes. He caressed Stanley’s back, exhaling a sigh of relief. He kissed Stanley’s head, not exactly aiming for a cheek or his temple, but just as his head was leaned on Bill’s shoulder. Bill rested his chin on Stanley’s shoulder. 
“C-c-cool,” a smile crept onto Bill’s face.
The sun had completely rolled down the sky, leaving a black blanket with silver, glittering dots and a big round moon that he could see from the window. For the first time in a while, the butterflies visited when Stan thought about staying alive. He reached for Bill’s hand hesitantly and cracked a slow grin. Bill looked at him and smiled, squeezing his hand back. Stanley searches his brain for the right words. He ended up whispering, “I appreciate you to an incredible extent.” 
Bill blushed and replied with, “I love you, too”
“I-” Stan’s face heated up at his inability to properly piece together the three fast words. He giggled and nodded.
Bill gazed at him, “D-d-don’t forget it,” he squeezed Stanley’s hand gently. “O-o-okay?” 
“I won’t. Same to you.” Stanley squeezed Bill’s hand in return with a proud smile. 
“Stan, y-y-you know we sss-s-still have to t-t-tell someone.” Bill raised his eyebrow, watching Stanley’s face fall to consideration. 
Stan almost wanted to protest. ‘No, we don’t.’ or ‘I told you, didn’t I?’ or ‘Why?’ or ‘Just give it a week on my own and we’ll figure it out after that.’ he thought about saying. Instead he looked at Bill’s face, longing for closure.
“I know.” he sighed. “Come over tomorrow and we can talk about details and all that, I guess?” he scratched the back of his neck. 
“I’ll b-b-be there.” Bill nodded, “I’m proud of y-you.” 
Stanley beamed, kissing Bill’s cheek again. Bill copied him, kissing Stanley’s cheek. Stanley’s face heated up, blossoming like bright red roses. He went to kiss Bill’s cheek again, but Bill matched his lips to Stanley’s and they shared a kiss. Stanley was exhilarated; overwhelmed with what he’d wanted for years. 
Richie stepped outside to check on the two, “Hey, what’s taking you so lo- oh.” The two pulled away from each other. “Reminds me of myself and Eddie’s mother last night.” 
“I am going to end your fucking life, Richie.” Stanley threatened. 
Richie put his hands up in innocence, “Just saying!” he went back into the office. Even through the closed doors, the couple heard: “Don’t bother them kids.” Richie’s Brooklyn accent “They’s suckin’ face and Eds here owes me five Washingtons.” 
Stanley and Bill chuckled. Stan smoothly put one more kiss on Bill’s cheek before, leading him back to the office. Their hands never unclasped. Stanley looked over to him as Bill opened the doors. The attention turned to the two. 
“Were you two actually kissing?” Eddie dropped his attention from his conversation with other Losers. “Cause I’m not paying Richie five dollars.” 
“Are you kidding? Denbrough was practically getting laid out there!” Richie answered, receiving five voices of laughter and one Jewish glare. (“Beep, beep, Richie.” “You g-g-guys put buh-buh-bets on us?”)
“Not getting laid, however, was getting a boyfriend,” Stanley corrected.
“Doubt it,” Eddie challenged, shrugging. “Not paying.” he shook his stubborn head. 
Bill glanced at Stanley, then kissed him on the lips for proof, catching the boy off guard. Stan almost fell over, before holding Bill’s waist and kissing back. “Whatttt!”s and “Woah!”s and Mike’s wolf whistle filled their office space. The two separated, grinning, sitting down in their original places. 
Mike looked at the two with an expression that could only be described as ‘I knew it.’ Eddie looked over at a smirking Richie. He knew as well. 
“I’m happy for you guys,” Ben smiled at the two. 
“Me too,” Beverly’s eyes shone with pride. 
“Th-th-thanks,” Bill answered for them with a smile, noticing Beverly and Ben holding hands. He whispered to Stanley, “C-c-come cuddle, let’s be a c-cuter cuh-cuh-couple then them.” 
Stanley giggled, leaning his head on Bill’s shoulder. “Thank you so much by the way.” he said, not exactly paying attention to the other Losers’ words. “You’re the best, Bill.”

Plot: (Y/N) goes to the beach and thinks she’s experiencing love at first sight.

It feels like something’s happening to me
In the summertime, I met a guy
He was so fine, he blew my mind
My friends are telling me
“Girl, he’s a loser”
But they can’t see
My friends and I had decided to take a summer trip to the beach. I felt really good that day. My hair seemed more wavy that day than normal, bouncy even. I was dressed in my best blue striped bikini, the bottoms were high waisted and had small tassels hanging off the hips. There was also one hanging from my top, right between my cleavage. Dawn, one of my friends, called out to me.
“Ay, (Y/N)! Come here a second.” I made my way over and I brushed my hair away from my face. “Yeah?” They were calling me over so we could put on the sunblock. I didn’t need much since I usually tanned instead of burning. That doesn’t help our poor friend, Katie. Poor girl was as pale as a lilly and turned into a lobster as soon as the skin touched her. We really had to drag her out of the house more often. I looked up from applying the sunblock and I managed to catch sight of one of the HOTTEST guys I have ever laid my eyes on.
His tanned skin and sculpted body really caught my eyes. He did not seem to have a lot of muscle, besides his obvious abs, but he seemed to be toned. His dark curly hair also caught my attention. His friends were pretty nice to look at too, but something about him stood out to me.
Jessica scoffed as she looked at him, “Oh come on, girl. He’s a loser. You cannot possibly be attracted to someone who looks like that. However~” Her eyes obviously drifted to the more sculpted of his friends. Of course. She was only ever interested in the body builder type of boys. However, I was intrigued by the other boy from before.

Oh god, not only was he pretty to look at, but his voice was gorgeous as well. I could tell he had some kind of accent but I wasn’t sure what kind. I swore it was Hispanic in origin. His laugh was amazing. It reminded me of a chiming bell in the middle of a clear day. What was happening to me? I felt nervous and like I wanted to throw up, but in a good way. I wish I had the courage to talk to this stranger. My friends were calling him a loser without knowing who he was.
That’s when I felt something hit me. No, like actually hit me. Apparently I had been staring out at the water for too long, where the stranger was originally standing. I had landed on my ass in the sand. Oh god, this is so embarrassing.
From the first time I saw his eyes,
There was sunshine every time
He walks into the room
I feel my heart go boom boom boom!
“Hey, are you alright?” I blinked to try and focus, all while holding my head where the object-- a ball-- had hit me. My eyes focused on those beautiful brown eyes. I swore the sun was shining like two hundred times brighter when mine met his. “Oh, um, yeah thanks.” I stuttered as I realized he was trying to help me up. Placing my hand in his, the stranger helped me up. “My name is Joel, I’m sorry about hitting you.” He paused for a minute to tilt his head slightly. “You seemed pretty zoned out. What were you thinking so hard about?”
Joel. That was a gorgeous name for a gorgeous boy. “Oh, I was thinking about how beautiful today is.” I lied through my teeth. What a damn liar I am. But wait, he said I was zoned out. That means he was staring at me too! My face flushed a bright red color as Joel laughed. “Okay, whatever you say. I’m just glad you’re alright. My friends happened to hit the ball a little too hard.” Suddenly, I heard shouting behind him. Joel smiled shyly at me, “What’s your name?” I smiled back and replied, “(Y/N).” I shook his hand properly this time in greeting.
His head turned so he could yell back. Only to speak in the most beautiful and smooth Spanish voice, which I recognized the Mexican diction from Spanish class. Holy shit, was I lucky or what? My friends seemed to be eyeing us together but let us continue talking.
“Would you like to play volleyball with us, (Y/N)? Maybe your friends could play too and make the teams even.” Joel offered me. I nodded and smirked slightly, “Sounds like fun.” I knew my friends and I were not athletic by any means, but it would be fun.
I jogged over to my friends once Joel gave me instructions on where to meet them. “Woah, (Y/N), you actually talked to the hottie. I’m proud of you.” Dawn playfully elbowed me in the side. I smiled as I nodded. “Yeah, I did, and he invited us to play volleyball with his friends. It’s going to be five on five, so I guess we’ll choose teams over there? Or we can do two on two matches. I’m not sure which one they want to do, but are you interested?” I asked with a smirk. They nodded quickly and practically begged me to lead them over. Jessica had gone home apparently. She had to go home she claimed. Oh well, looks like it’ll be me, Nikki, Veronica, Katie and Dawn.
“(Y/N)!” Joel greeted as we walked over to them. “Nice to see you made it!” He began to introduce us to his friends. “This is Zabdiel, Christopher, Richard, and Erick.” He pointed to each of the boys and they greeted us. “Nice to meet you. I’m (Y/N), this is Dawn, Katie, Veronica, and Nikki!”
We greeted one another before we decided to choose teams. Me and Richard were captains, so we chose our teams schoolyard style. On my team, I had Joel, Katie, Christopher, and Erick. The other team was Richard, Dawn, Zabdiel, Veronica, and Nikki.

After a few rounds, we stayed with them to do a bonfire on the beach. That was Christopher’s idea. Apparently, he and Katie are our pyromaniacs. They were the ones who jumped on making the fire. I had pulled on a hoodie and some shorts to cover my bathing suit as I sat by the fire. Joel was helping supervise the giant man-child that is Christopher.
He sat down next to me when he was done and I felt those butterflies in my stomach again. He smiled as he offered me a water bottle. I accepted it gracefully and thanked him. We all sat around and spoke to one another, getting to know each other more. All night, I was bothered by those damn butterflies! I smiled as I thought about how Joel apologized. He was really cute and really sweet. Today had been a great day.
Sadly, we had to say goodbye. But before we did, I had gotten a slip of paper in my pocket along with a note. ‘I really enjoyed today. Thanks for the awesome time! Sorry again for hitting you xx - Joel’. I squeaked as Dawn poked my side. “Ooh, you got his number!” She whispered. I blushed even harder. What was happening to me? I think it was a crush at first sight situation.

This is a bit long & also like sad so under the cut~! 
“it’s okay baby! Daddy’s got you!” The man cried holding onto his daughter with all the strength he could possibly muster all while running dangerously fast in any clear direction. A sudden massive villain attack in the middle of the night and right in the middle of a sleeping neighborhood broke out! There were so many, the man ran in every which direction he could to avoid any nasty villains out for blood, it seemed endless, they just kept coming. He tried to drive an abandoned car out of the neighborhood but a mutant quirk wielder destroyed the vehicle right in the middle of the street. While rapidly escaping with the help of his weakened barrier quirk, the child fell hard twisting her ankle in the process, her father picked her up and just ran, it was all he could do. They were still such a long ways away from any hospital or hero agencies, hell the police weren’t even in walking distance, but he had to keep her safe. “Daddy’s got you!!”
“Is that so?” Another mutant snickered out, jumping down from a roof top, just a few yards away from the small family. The mutant looked like some sort of porcupine horridly experimented walked around on two feet, hunched over due to the disfigured quills on his back.
Stepping back, covering his child more with his arms, the man panicked, “I HAVE A CHILD!” his voice wailed out desperately, stepping back a few more because the mutant’s quills perked forward.
“…..you better RUN THEN!!” the villain cracked laughing out as the spines flew at the two, the pure forced of the attack knocked the man to the floor, his child flying from his arms. The disgusting mutant began to lunge forward but he wouldn’t be able to reach the man because……………..
Toshinori, Yagi
“All Might is here!” That deep booming voice called out all the while stomping onto the mutant’s head, slamming the villain to the floor instantly. He grabbed the villain by the spines and yanked him up, “attcking a father bravely risking his life for his child is nothing but pure evil!! You shall never roam these peaceful streets aga—– “YUKI?! OH GOD YUKI!!” All Might’s voice were cut off by the father’s pained howl, snapping his attention to the bleeding child on the floor, silently crying while staring at the father terrified to even touch her. Three large quills pierced her stomach, impaling her organs. All Might threw the villain into a near by wall and ran over to the sobbing father, he found himself paralyzed by the sight of all the blood, the pained look on her face and the cries that escaped her. “I know baby…. oh god…. it’s gonna hurt Yuki… oh no my sweet baby girl….! Let me hold you… please…” The man’s voice cracked as he struggled to place the screaming child in his arms, he didn’t want to pain her but she wasn’t going to make it and all he wanted was to hold her one last time. All Might snapped out of it when her cries suddenly stopped, rushing over to the now screaming parent’s side and leaning down beside him, he saw that the child was no longer with them anymore.
He didn’t know what he could do in this moment, nothing could ever fix this, all he could do was wrap both of the them in his muscular arms. The man cried as loud as he could and All Might allowed him his moment for as long as he needed keeping them safe now that he was there, he would smash any villain that dared venture close and any that was near when he was able to move them to safety. Sadly, he could not come in time to save the girl, he did not want to break down in front of the father but the moment he went home, Toshinori broke down in his home while in the shower. His thin, destroyed body shaking as he wailed harshly on the floor. He couldn’t help but think if only he wasn’t so pathetic.
Togata, Mirio
Lemillion phased through the floor just underneath the mutant, his fist jabbing straight into the villain’s gut, knocking the villain and his dinner out onto the floor, “not so fast criminal!” He kicked against the limp body to check and see if the evildoer was actually knocked out, his usually wide smile on his face returning when he turned around. He offered a hand to the man on the floor and as the man went to take it, Lemillion lifted his eyes to the child on the floor, his smile and hand instantly dropping. The man followed his gaze and began to scramble over to the girl, crawling on the floor desperately trying to reach her, “…no…no,no,no, no, NO!” He screamed while picking her limp body off the floor and began to hold onto her again, “don’t do this to me….no. don’t…please….wake up!” Lemillion’s eyes widened seeing the large quill shoved into her chest, his knees could no longer hold his own body up any longer, giving out and sending down onto the floor. This was his first loss and she was only a child.
He couldn’t think… He couldn’t move…. He couldn’t even breathe…!!
“Lemillion! Lemillion, snap out of it!” Nighteye snapped, grabbing both of the other hero’s shoulder and shaking him, worried written all over his usually serious face. “….It never gets any easier but you can’t give up….” He murmured while embracing Lemillion, who was now crying his eyes out, sobbing out loudly, he was still a kid himself after all.
Amajiki, Tamaki 
Suneater’s tentacles wrapped tightly around the villain’s entire body lifting him into the air and away from the two civilians, not wanting any harm to come to them. The villain’s quills pierced their Suneater’s fingers, making him wince out, lowering the villain back down a bit, the villain attempted to do the same attack twice but Suneater figured that much and hardened the tentacles with crab shells, a few quills snapping from the intense pressure they were being put into. As the villain continued to struggle, Suneater tried to knock him out, not liking how the villain began spilling out such foul language at him. He slammed a clam hand harshly down onto the mutant’s head and was about to do it again but his attention was snapped behind himself. A loud screaming from the man began to echo in the streets and this made Suneater’s heart sink deeply into his stomach, and made him terrified to see why this man was in such distress. But his feet moved by themselves, his eyes wide underneath the hood hiding them and his whole body trembling harshly. As he got closer he hear the tiny cries of pain coming from the bleeding child in the man’s arms, one side of her small frame was riddled with quills, quickly killing this small child. “My child…. my sweet baby!” The crying man repeated nothing but those words, his face buried into the child’s hair, the two of them clinging onto one another until she went silent.
Suneater slide to his knees on the floor and began to wail out, Fatgum coming to his side within minutes. The round, tall man lifted up his crying intern and squished him into his body, embracing this child as tightly as he could, keeping him close to him while talking with the father. Offering his aid, Fatgum was able to bring the three of them to a safety point, making sure not to leave Amajiki alone from here on out. Mirio and Kirishima came out of no where and quickly pulled Amajiki into a tight emotional group hug, they had heard what their friend had to go through.
Aizawa, Shouta
Eraserhead’s capturing weapon was sent flying, slithering through the air as if they cloth was alive, coiling around it’s prey and immobilizing the villain fairly quickly. “Villains like you are too reckless. It makes it easier to capture you though.” He murmured out bluntly, his hands keeping a tight grip on the cloth to ensure there would be no escaping, turning to face the downed parent, “get your child and ge—-!” His eyes caught sight of the blood spilling out of the girl’s body, and his heart sank, just by the look of her from where he was standing he could tell the prognosis of her surviving this was incredibly low. His head snapped forward when her father rushed to her side and began to rock back and forth with her tiny body in his arms. This part of the job never got any easier, especially when a child was involved, it wasn’t the first child he lost during his years of being a hero and sadly, it wouldn’t be the last. But it still never got any easier to experience, it got harder when he became a teacher to children just as small as her though. Tying the cloth tightly Eraserhead made sure that this horrid villain wouldn’t have any chances at escaping, so that he would spend the rest of his days rotting in custody for what he had done tonight. While doing that and shoving the said villain against the wall, Eraserhead let the father have what remaining time he had left with his child uninterrupted.
He even told the police to let the man be until he was ready to remove himself away from his child’s corpse, to allow him to say his goodbyes. When he did, Eraserhead came up to the man and bowed to him, “forgive me for not making it in time to save your child…. allow me to help with whatever you may need for a proper burial.” Exchanging some information with the man, Aizawa personally offered him a shoulder if he needed one to cry on, knowing that no matter what he could possibly offer, he couldn’t bring back the life of a lost child.

…boom…barnes family…there it is…
          Iann’s glass gently tapped against Tuah’s as the sound rang through the dank and dark room they all rested in, silencing the parties mutterings and gossiping. Assortments of candy and sweets that could rot ones teeth from the outside in had insects crawling about, hidden by the darkness with occasional scatterings illuminated by the moons light that loomed through large and worn windows. Decorations hung in shades of navy while roses stems sat in jars for the birthday girl was spending her first of many with the collective, away getting ready with the stylish nymph that insisted he would dress her properly for the evenings sinister celebrations.
           “A toast,” Iann announced, looking out at those who were their, seated or stood about the room with those they had been muttering with. His voice strong and commanding of the situation, as did his deeply coloured mustache that was thick as his mind could often be. “To the glorious mysteries of life. To all that binds a family as one,” he insisted. Perhaps they were not family by blood but they were family by choice and love, even hate in some instances as Iann noticed the faerie male seated stoically at the piano while Bella stood on the other side of the room holding her glass high in hand. 
          His attention returning to that of everyone he proceeded. “To mirth, to merriment, to manslaughter,” he continued, the room filling with a soft and bemused laughter. Each person raised their own glass and a few agreed with a ‘here, here’ that was lost amongst the laughter and the small amount of clapping that came with it. What kind of town would Soapberry be if not for the occasional death to those who were not worthy of it’s embrace only rivaled perhaps by someone trying to choke you to death.
          “To dear friends,” Iann engaged, rising his glass to Faye and her partner Fane with her child in lap. While Faye sat with a mother’s posture, shoulders slightly slumped as she tried to stay awake at such a late hour, in her white dress and pearls that sat tightly against her neck her she sipped on a glass of deep burgundy coloured wine. The lace on the white dress partially stained by what one could assume was the wine, were one stupid enough to think so. Fane to her side had been speaking much like someone had autotuned a teacher in Charlie Brown, no words coming out. It had been Ephram’s idea and everyone in the room with abilities had rather agreed they’d prefer the inane screeching they couldn’t understand to his incidental boasting. Still Faye smiled as Fane leaned in, completely unaware of the enchantment that Eowyn in her lap enjoyed.
           “To new friends,” Iann followed, eyes shifting to Nuadia in a long black suit that hung from their bones and her companion Jaewon who matched them almost completely except they had a distressed shirt beneath. Their close embrace causing Iann to give them a sinister wink as his own glass bubbled and frothed. At his wink and gaze Nuadia smiled, their own turning to Jaewon with a giggle at their lips. A clink of their own glasses came, like Iann’s they frothed but something Nuadia had done made them drip with a black and gooey glitter, and Jaewon looked back with his own kind of hungry eyes. The two had been embracing for practically the whole evening, completely and utterly absorbed in one another. Each word they spoke sweet but savage all at once.
           “To youth,” Iann’s next gush came, eyes following to Bellamy. His prized child even if she was not such held the glass of thickest red, lips stained with it as she looked back at him, focused on the man speaking rather than the man beside her. Yet Miles looked at her, watched as Bella raised her glass. Her body was hugged tightly by a slim black dress making every light that hit her exaggerate what was going on beneath. Did she wear things with the specific purpose of taunting him? Especially as there was no one there that evening he could leave with, most people paired up from the looks of things.
           It was only when Miles spoke her golden eyes flickered over to him. “How do I look?” he questioned. He had grown a mustache over his plump lips in contest with Iann and Bella had found that it did not suit him, the look as awful as an evening at Chuck-E-Cheese would be. Yet even with it Bellamy found herself reaching out and touching the lapel of the deep navy suit she had put him in just earlier that day, his shirt black and form fitting as Bellamy had been the one to pick it. “Disturbing,” she answered. Why he thought looking like the man she imagined as her father would work for him she would not understand.
         “To passion,” Iann began to finish, turning his eyes to his darling date. Like Miles he had been stuffed by Bellamy into a tight black shirt, buttons pulling over his muscles and Iann wanted to just rip the goddamn thing off him and expose the tan and tight body he had beneath. “To paradise,” Tuah responded with an accent thicker than he generally had in public. “To pain,” Iann said, glass rising higher and his hand extending to Tuah’s form oblivious to those around them. “Tonight,” Tuah insisted with an unusually confident smirk. Iann could not stop himself, leaning into his immortal lover so he could taste the ominous drink on his lips.
        A bemused and self indulgent laugh game from the door as Teddy caught the gesture Iann and Tuah intended to make in front of everyone who most certainly had no interest in seeing it. “Make way for the birthday girl,” Teddy announced as he stepped out of the way of the door. Following him Ephram came in, a deep blue cake looking like an aggressive sea on a trolley before him. Like every other person in there he wore a deep black suit but the first five buttons had been undone, much to Teddy’s displeasure as he had repeatedly tried to do them up while each had been waiting on different things. Teddy on the girl and Ephram on the cake.
        Once Ephram was out of the way though Elena stepped through in a glittering royal blue gown. It hung from her flesh like netting might hang off a caught fish. Amongst the layered fishnet that made it up was gemstones in large and small sizes. The girls long hair pooled over her shoulders but showed her defined and tan colour bones. Teddy had done well getting her into the contraption Bella had bought but could not get her into the heels so her painted toes stuck out from beneath it. The soles of her feet were dusty in the old home they had thrown her celebration in but Elena did not care because all eyes were on her. Everyone had come there to celebrate her first birthday on the surface.
        “Kit, will you do the honours,” Nuadia said, looking towards the animal that had been lurking at their feet. The animal seemed to look at them with a distasteful gaze as he knew he could not light a cake a cakes candles. Instead he merely removed himself from her feet and went to Elena’s, Ephram taking on the job of lighting the cake before taking a seat beside his beloved who had been fairly ignored until Ephram’s return as he’d been avoiding conflict with the vampire as much as Bella had with him.
        With the companionship of his witch Freddie began to play ‘Happy Birthday’ woefully on the piano. No one sang, instead watching as Elena lit up at the prospect of candles and Teddy explained the human process of them and the wish she could make. Her glee was enough to make every feel wonderfully dreadful.

The Beginning of a Legacy: Chapter 4
Chapter 4
“Captain,” Malaha greeted as John and his group stepped into the briefing room.
“Major,” he greeted in return and saluted.
Everyone followed suit, except for Joel, who just tipped his hat like the typical Southern gentleman he tried to style himself as. The Major gave Joel a fond look before she shook her head. Leave it to Joel to charm everyone in high command into not caring if he saluted or not. He’d be charming them out of their wallets if they allowed it; he was good at getting what he wanted. John glanced past Malaha and took stock of the group assembled around the table. Young eyes stared at him, each one a little more nervous than the last.
“So, this is Overwatch?” John asked. “A motley bunch, if nothing else.”
“The best from around the world, Captain Morrison,” Malaha chuckled. “Don’t let their age fool you; they’re as dedicated to this cause as you are and just as qualified.”
“It’s not their dedication I worry about,” John replied as his eyes landed on an enormous young man with barely the beginnings of a beard on his chin. “Why the hell is there a teenager at my table?”
The boy in question grinned widely before he got to his feet, holding a massive hand out towards John. He was easily almost six and a half feet tall and by the looks of him, he wasn’t done growing yet. He wasn’t just tall, either; he was covered in thick muscles. Was it natural for a kid his age to be that ripped? It was sort of disquieting.
“Reinhardt Wilhelm at your service!” he boomed, making Laura squeak in surprise.
Kid had a good set of lungs on him too. At least someone’s voice was going to carry over the battlefield when orders needed to be shouted.
“Captain Morrison,” John replied as he shook the boy’s hand. “That doesn’t tell me why you’re here, kid.”
“Ah, I was nominated from my order,” Reinhardt beamed and puffed his chest out. “We Crusaders are the best that Germany has to offer!”
“Never heard of the group,” John said coldly. “And I question their motives for sending a child to me.”
“John,” Joel elbowed him in the side. “Ease up. I was runnin’ guns when I was his age.”
“Let’s not bring up your sordid past, Joel,” John shot him a look. “It is not a good example to use.”
“Why not? Best they know who they’re dealin’ with,” Joel smirked. “‘Sides, hard to call anyone that’s as big as Reinhardt a kid. Fuck, he’s bigger than I am and I ain’t a short-ass, unlike you, Snow White.”
“Snow White had ebony black hair; I’m more like Cinderella,” John shook his head. “Van is going to be so insulted that you didn’t pay attention to our discussion, Joel. And after she decided you were Robin Hood too.”
“Considerin’ the one she was talkin’ about was a fox, I’m sort of happy about forgettin’ it ‘til this moment,” he teased before winking at Reinhardt. “Little girls are usually pretty good at complimentin’ ya, but they’re just as fast to insult ya thinkin’ they’re being cute. She’d probably call you ‘Little John’ or Ballou cuz a yer size.”
Reinhardt grinned and puffed his chest out even more. Leave it to the kid to take being likened to a bear as a compliment. John did his best not to roll his eyes as Joel leaned on the table.
“How long you serve, Reinhardt?” Joel asked.
“A little over a year, sir,” Reinhardt smiled.
“Ah, don’t sir me; I ain’t the one with the shiny badge on my chest,” Joel laughed. “Just call me Joel. Or McCree; I’ll answer to both.”
“So they’re sending a private instead of an officer,” John growled. “They aren’t fighting their case very well.”
“John, breathe,” Joel shot him a smirk. “Decision’s already been made. Roll with it.”
“I could hit you,” John glared at him.
Joel smirked more and flipped him off. John reached out and cuffed the older man over the head, but all it got him was a gruff laugh and a hand in his hair ruffling it roughly.
“That’s ol’ Cap fer ya,” Joel crowed. “Cares too much fer his own good. Don’t worry, boys and girls, John’ll carry yer busted ass off the battlefield no matter how much he’s cussin’ you out.”
John reached up to try and fix his ruffled hair, glaring at Joel, but it softened at the man’s fond smile. Joel set his hands on his hips before he glanced around at the table.
“So, who else wants to introduce themselves?” he asked. “You know, before the Cap’ is forced to give his military spiel and we’re all reduced to numbers in some jackass’ book.”
A woman rose elegantly to her feet and bowed her head. “Shimada Miyu,” she said with a lighter Japanese accent than John was expecting. “It is an honour to serve with you, Morrison-sama.” She glanced up and smirked at him. “You can return the bow if you wish, just keep your head above mine.”
“I’ll settle for a handshake,” John replied.
“Thank Christ!” Miyu laughed as she reached across the table to shake his hand. “I hate having to deal with Americans that don’t know the first thing about proper bows.”
Joel cackled with glee at her comment and tipped his hat. “Ah, lil lady, I think we’re gunna get along just fine,” he teased.
“I should hope so,” she winked. “We ex-criminals have to stick together.”
“What?” Laura piped up.
Joel lifted his hat a little out of his eyes and squinted at Miyu. Miyu smirked and batted her eyelashes, shifting her shoulders back and forth. Joel threw his head back and laughed, reaching out to thump John’s chest.
“Well I’ll be,” he laughed. “If it ain’t the White Dragon of Hanamura! My, you grew up into a fine young lady, Miss Miyu. I didn’t recognize ya!”
“Care to fill the rest of us in?” John sighed.
“Deadlock and the Shimada clan had some dealin’s over the years,” Joel grinned. “Miyu’s the fine offspring of a powerful yakuza leader. ‘Though, I expect if yer here, that cousin of yers finally managed to wrench control from yer elders.”
“Exactly,” Miyu nodded. “I am here as a peace offering from the Shimada Clan to the Japanese Military.”
“So we’re working with criminals,” a man growled, glaring at Miyu and Joel. “Is this really the best the world has to offer?”
“Who the governments chose to send is out of my control, Sergeant,” Malaha said. “You will just have to deal with it.”
“You expect me to trust criminals to watch my back?” the Sergeant demanded, his dark eyes narrowing. “This is loco.”
“I have no reason to turn on you unless you give me a reason to, Reyes-san,” Miyu inclined her head.
Sergeant Reyes glared at her and said something in Spanish. John’s Spanish was horrible; he’d learned French in high school and the most he could say was “hello” and “where’s the bathroom”. Miyu smiled sweetly at the Sergeant before punching him across the face and knocking him flat on his ass. She gave her fist a shake and set a hand on her hip.
“You know what he said?” John asked as everyone shuffled closer to stare at the dazed man on the floor.
“Not a clue,” she shrugged. “But I know when I’ve been insulted.”
“Pretty sure I heard a puta in there,” Joel chuckled. “So he at least called you a ‘bitch’.”
“Typical,” Miyu smirked before looking at John. “So,” she smiled, “when do we leave?”
“So, you got anyone waiting for you at home, Captain?”
Joel glanced up. Sergeant Reyes still had a beautiful black eye from where Miyu had punched him, but the idiot had at least stopped insulting her when she was in hearing range. He had pitched a fit when John made it clear that Joel was his Second in Command over a “more qualified” military officer. Joel was still waiting for the right moment to pin the man to a wall and shake some sense into him. Now was not the time for his backwards, bro-military logic. They had a dangerous war to win.
“Kid,” John smiled. “Only seven.”
“Look like you or his mom?” Reyes asked.
“Him,” Laura smirked. “Damn near spitting image, if you ask me. Great big blue eyes and corn-gold blond hair. Such a little sweetie.”
“Thank you, Laura,” John shook his head. “I’m sure Jack will love that you said that. He’s always so scared people won’t know he’s my son.”
Laura grinned widely before she returned to listening to her iPod. Joel shook his head in amusement as Reyes lifted an eyebrow at Laura. He clearly didn’t approve of the scout being on the same team as him either. Whether because she was young or inexperienced with military protocol was something Joel still had to puzzle out. Reyes shook his head and turned back to John.
“So, what, you white boys just breed true or something?” he asked.
“Wow, asshole,” Joel called. “My kids look like me too.”
“Hey, I didn’t mean anything by it,” Reyes smiled. “You know that, right, gringo?”
John shot him a look and shook his head. Just like the big boss to let insults slide so that no feathers were ruffled. Kid better not think Joel was that nice.
“What about you, Reyes? Who’s waiting at home for you?” John asked.
“Brother, sister-in-law, and their kids,” Reyes smirked.
“How sweet,” John said icily.
“Oh, come on, Cap; I’m just playing around,” Reyes said sweetly. “What’s the matter; can’t take a joke?”
“Jokes should be funny,” Miyu said as she walked over and dropped down between John and Reyes. “Not meant to make someone feel small over something as petty as living family members.”
“I’d listen to the lady,” Joel commented as he readjusted his hat. “Ain’t gunna get anywhere if we’re at each other’s throats over stupid shit like this.”
“Hey, I’m just trying to make small talk,” Reyes lifted his hands.
“Then speak of something else,” Miyu replied.
“Fine; what’s home to you?” Reyes demanded.
“A village on top of a hill,” Miyu smiled. “It’s old and swamped by tradition. Tokyo is not far from us, so at night you can see the lights in the sky. It’s beautiful in spring, full of warmth and sunshine. There are cherry blossoms floating everywhere. I miss it.”
“How long you been away, Miyu?” Joel asked.
“Two years,” Miyu looked down at her feet. “I have been protecting the rest of Asia from the omnics. I have not held my cousin’s son since he was born. My cousin tells me that he is expecting another child. I want to be there to hold them at least once.”
“Home’s a farm,” John sighed. “Corn plantations as far as the eye can see. Wide open spaces. Porch with a swing seat. Tire swing hanging from the old oak in the front yard. Chickens running around and pecking at everything. Dirt road all the way up to the highway. Sweet ice tea on a summer night.”
“Sounds like heaven,” Miyu smiled. “What happened to it?”
“Omnics,” John sighed. “Don’t know how much is left of the old farmstead. Could probably save something of it when this hell is done with. What about you, Joel?”
Joel smiled as he tipped his hat back. “Wild west is what I call home,” he chuckled. “Hot sun, sun-baked earth, not a tree fer miles in any direction. Just you, a gun, and whatever mode of transportation you prefer. Used to drive an ol’ pick-up, personally. But, home’s also a warm house filled with the laughter of children. Never thought I’d be much of a family man ‘til my little rugrats were born.”
“Apartment in Bloomington,” Laura said as she pulled an earbud out. “Not overly fancy, but it’s nice. Just me, Dad, and Tigger.”
“A village in Germany,” Reinhardt sighed softly from where he was sitting. “The cool breezes of summer wafting in out of the forest. Homemade bread filling the house. I will never see it again.”
“I’m sorry,” Joel murmured. “Omnics?”
“Ja,” Reinhardt nodded his head. “It is what spurred me into the army so young. There was nothing left of my home and I could not bear the thought of others suffering as I did. I swore I would protect all that I could. I do not plan on breaking that vow ever.”
“What about you, Reyes?” Joel asked. “What’s home to you?”
Reyes shifted uncomfortably and looked away. “A home in L.A,” he grumbled. “Nothing special about it. Just nice and full of people.”
“Any of them actually miss you?” Joel growled in Spanish. Reyes looked at him in surprise and Joel smiled. “What, you really think you’re the only one capable of knowing two languages?”
“Didn’t peg you as being Mexican,” Reyes said. “Little dark.”
“Not Mexican; Navajo,” Joel shrugged. “Learned Spanish in high school and kept at it since it was useful to know. Regardless, you’re a right arrogant bastard. You think only Mexicans can speak Spanish? A good chunk of the fucking world speaks Spanish, jackass.”
“You don’t talk like a white boy, that’s all.”
“And racist to boot,” Joel snorted, wishing he could spit. He was pretty sure the pilot would gut him if he spat in her plane. “Fuckers like you give the rest of us a bad name.”
“Rest of us?” Reyes demanded. “You’re nothing but a half-bred…”
“Oh, finish that sentence,” Joel snarled as he got to his feet, “I dare ya!”
“Joel,” John got to his feet. “I don’t know what you two are arguing about, but it’s not worth it.”
“Yes, listen to your slave driver,” Reyes smirked.
“John, I gotta lot of respect fer ya, but let me handle this,” Joel growled. “This shitstain needs to learn a lesson.”
John looked at him before he gently pulled Miyu to her feet. “You don’t want to be in his way,” he said at her indignant look. “Trust me.”
Joel waited until Miyu and John had moved to a different set of seats before he attacked. The shock in Reyes’ eyes was satisfying as Joel slammed him against the wall. He recovered fast, driving his knee up into Joel’s stomach to make him back off. He underestimated how fast Joel could recover, however, and wasted the few precious seconds to smirk.
Joel surged forward and grabbed Reyes by the head, wrenching him around. He smashed his head to the ground and got an elbow to the jaw during the maneuver. He bit the end of his tongue, filling his mouth with blood as he stumbled back. He grinned, letting Reyes see the gory sight, before he spat on the floor. He wasn’t exactly going to swallow it; he’d clean it up afterwards so the pilot didn’t kill him.
He saw the combat knife emerge from Reyes’ boot as he looked up. He blocked the blow, grinning as he twisted Reyes’ arm under his. He wrenched up, forcing Reyes’ hand open and making him drop the knife.
“Next time you pull a knife,” Joel growled before his machete came free of its sheath, “make sure your opponent doesn’t have a bigger one.” He pressed the blade against Reyes’ cheek and dragged it slowly down the curve of his jaw. “Now remember yer place or yer gunna find out why they call me ‘Coyote’. I ain’t the big boss. I ain’t nice to shits like you.”
He pulled away slowly, running the tip of his machete under Reyes’ trembling chin. He pulled it away swiftly, nicking the skin just enough to make a thin line of red appear. He slipped his machete back into its sheath before heading for the medical supply cupboard in search of something that would make his tongue stop bleeding. Reyes got the message loud and clear.

I just got off the phone with the admission person for Rogers Hospital as well as with a manager of an apartment for people in treatment. And guess what, they both have openings and have accepted me into their programs. So now it’s smooth sailing into treatment. Go me. 
If I sound slightly sarcastic it’s because I’m wigging out right now. Like, I understand that I need this and that a part of me actually wants it, but boy do I really not want to actually go through it. And now there is literally no blockade in my way. I have the doctors appointment on Friday, move into the apartment whenever they email me back with the lease agreement, and start the program on Monday. THAT iS IN 6 DAYS HOLY SHIT. I’m wigging out. So my thought logic is to spend some time now to reflect on just how I got to this very moment of stress and anxiety. And maybe give myself some credit for what I have already gone through this year in order to feel a slight bit of confidence going into what could be one of the scariest things of my life. 
One of the last weekends before senior year started I slept with my now ex boyfriend for the first time. And I’m not talking sex, I’m talking about the literal sleeping next to him aspect of our relationship. I hadn't done that with anyone for a year and a half and it was the hardest thing that I had to overcome with the label of being in a relationship. I remember that night I had no interest in cuddling, touching, or even being there next to him, the only thing on my mind was surviving the night. And it was all simply because the last time I had laid down next to a guy and slept I was left vulnerable and exploited by his greed and dominance. And that was all I could think about as the lights went out that night: I was allowing myself to be completely vulnerable to Joel in that moment. But that moment passed and eventually I was able to spend many nights by his side that involved more than my thoughts of just pure survival. I was able to push myself in those situations and come away stronger in the terms of my trust in men. I pushed myself and I was able to grow from that strength. 
On the other hand, when it came to sleeping with Joel, and not in the literal sense, I had some real challenges. The first time was like the opening of the flood gates of pure relapse. I had been doing well and then after that situation I abandoned all food for days. Don’t ask me why I did it, I barely know it myself, but it led to me sitting here now looking at another stint in treatment. I went from eating balanced meals every day to having friends ask me to send them a snap chat of every bit of food I put in my mouth because they were terrified I would waste away. I cried in my car about a bag of fruit snacks. Spent a night sitting next to the toilet hyperventilating about a bite of pizza. I gave power to the underlaying beast within me and it fed on me in a way that I have never been able to feed myself. But maybe if that hadn't happened I never would be sitting here going back into treatment. Maybe I needed to fall down in order to take the steps to try and really soar. God these metaphors are cheesy as hell. But they speak the truth. Along with relapsing into my eating disorder I also relapsed into my self-harm. I had gone so long without inflicting physical harm to myself, but all it took was being in a bad mental place, watching a rape documentary, and boom, perfect recipe for new scars to appear on my body. And just a side note I guess, the self-harm extended from small lines of pain appearing on my skin to nights of intense thoughts of ending my life. As well as an afternoon spent in an emergency room explaining to doctors that I wanted to end my life. That wasn’t one of my finer moments in life I have to admit. But to make it slightly positive, I haven't self-harmed in almost a month and I haven't had strong suicidal thoughts for even longer than that. The biggest reason for all of this comes from Sam, who sat me down and got on her infamous soap box and described how it can no longer be an option to even ponder over. So thanks Sam, this has been your special shoutout. Also shoutout to Claire for your bluntness and ability to confront me at my worse. And it is important that this period of no self-harm continues because I know once I fuck up it’s gonna be harder to try and stay clean in treatment where being clean is expected. I have to continue to leave my skin looking good for I guess the rest of my life (not gonna lie, that’s as intense as it is scary to think about) 
Another thing that I went through that I want to point out is the fact that I lived with the idea that I was pregnant for 3 weeks as well as walked around being pregnant for 7 weeks. Like, what the fuck? First of all, the pure stress that being pregnant does to you is one like no other. And add on the fact that I found out I was pregnant the day after breaking up with my boyfriend...it wasn't easy. It is a decision that literally changes your life and the potential life of those cells. I could be 5 months pregnant right now while typing this. I could almost be a mother. But at what cost? My mental health would have been at such jeopardy. I hate my body now, what would my disorder make of a growing belly? The choice that I made lives with me all the time. Yesterday I was shopping and when I was leaving a store there was a three year old boy coming in the store with his mom. When he saw me he held the door open (with the help of his mom) and smiled at me saying “there you go.” The first thing that came into my mind was the idea that that could've been my life in three years. Those moments were in my grasp and I gave it up for the sake of my mental health and own life. If I wouldve kept the baby I don't think I would have been making those calls that I made today. But whenever there is a child in my presence my mind is plagued with the decision. But it was something that I don’t regret and that whole situation was just another indicator of how strong I can be. (though arguably some would say I wasn't strong because I chose to abort). But do you know how hard it is to walk into an abortion clinic by yourself and go through all of that with no physical support by your side? I was completely alone on that day and yes, I had friends check in on me before and after it, but during it was where the courage took place. And I did that all on my own.  And it’s gonna be the same on the day I walk into treatment. I’m gonna have friends sending me texts before and after but the actual day of treatment is gonna be so difficult and it’ll be me on my own trying to not get discharged on my first day. 
The biggest thing that I am worried about for treatment is my anxiety. Go figure, I am having anxiety about anxiety. But it has been the worst I have ever experienced recently. Before this year I would get panicky and would experience nausea but it is as if this year my body pushed even further and gave me anxiety that was quite literally paralyzing. The first time i honesty thought i was dying when I was trapped in my own fear that did not allow my entire body to move at all.  Do you know what that is like? To be trapped within your own body while your boyfriend is moving on top of you and you have no way to make it or him stop? All I could do was just lay there because my mind was too powerful to overcome it. I thought it was just a freak thing that would only happen that one time. But it happened again while I was driving one day freaking out about my life and feeling as if I was this huge disappointment for everyone in my life. I know that if it happens again that all it takes is time and being talked down by someone and the paralysis will ease up, but god am I terrified that I will experience it at treatment. I’ll take almost anything other than the feeling of being unable to control the muscles in my own body. 
And I guess with that I have covered the last 9 months of my life. There has been a lot that I have gone through, not gonna lie or undermine it. And to say the last year of college was enjoyable and a breeze would be the lie of the year. But all of the struggles and relapses have led me to those phone calls I had today. I’m not doing well, and it’s gonna get a lot worse from here on out, but maybe if I can get myself into a mind place that isn't all anxiety, I will be able to make these last few months of intense struggle meaningful and worthwhile. And who knows maybe in the future I won’t be sick with this thing. Wouldn't that be the ultimate knee slapper?

A quick and early newsletter this week, since we're in Texas for a few days visiting friends game-centric & non game-centric - among them Venus Patrol/ex-IGF supremo Brandon Boyer (& world's cutest megadog Scout), as well as Gamasutra publisher/EIC Kris Graft.
One thing I did find interesting from the links I still managed to excavate, though - the recent GDC video linked below about the making of VR standout Raw Data has a fairly high dislike-to-like ratio compared to other GDC videos (more dislikes than normal).
Why? Well, partly because the game dared to hit Early Access at $40 USD with a fairly linear story, by the look of it. If the hope was that VR would ensnare the 'core gamer', I'm starting to wonder whether VR experiences are even core gamer-compatible in terms of narrative, linearity & replayability. Which would be a pretty big stumbling block, if true... Anyhow, until next time?

[Video Game Deep Cuts is a weekly newsletter from curator/video game industry veteran Simon Carless, rounding up the best longread & standout articles & videos about games, every weekend. This week's highlights include videos on the making of Raw Data & the surprise debut of Scanner Sombre, plus the history of seminal NES emulator NESticle.
A quick and early newsletter this week, since we're in Texas for a few days visiting friends game-centric & non game-centric - among them Venus Patrol/ex-IGF supremo Brandon Boyer (& world's cutest megadog Scout), as well as Gamasutra publisher/EIC Kris Graft.
One thing I did find interesting from the links I still managed to excavate, though - the recent GDC video linked below about the making of VR standout Raw Data has a fairly high dislike-to-like ratio compared to other GDC videos (more dislikes than normal).
Why? Well, partly because the game dared to hit Early Access at $40 USD with a fairly linear story, by the look of it. If the hope was that VR would ensnare the 'core gamer', I'm starting to wonder whether VR experiences are even core gamer-compatible in terms of narrative, linearity & replayability. Which would be a pretty big stumbling block, if true... Anyhow, until next time?

Being NPCsplained at with screeds of exposition and feeling you’re taking little meaningful part in it all, game dialogue can make you want to run back into the hills."
[Game] Story - What Is It Good For? (Thomas Grip / Gamasutra Blogs) "This "go write a book instead" attitude isn't new. One of my favorite articles on the subject is Jesper Juul's "Games Telling Stories?". Interestingly, I pretty much agree with all of the points that Juul raises, but reject most of his conclusions. I think that video games are very well suited for telling stories and that there is no inherent conflict. [SIMON'S NOTE: another response to that Bogost article, of course!]"

In Gacha We Trust: The Appeal of Japanese Free to Play Games (Allen Kwan / Medium) "Richard Garfield recently penned a manifesto on free to play (F2P) games that encourage spending, or what he calls “skinnerware”. While there is perhaps a little bit of irony in the fact that the person responsible for creating one of the bigger “skinnerware” games, Magic the Gathering, writing a manifesto decrying the exploitative nature of these types of games, reading his post made me reflect on the F2P games that I play. [Video Game Deep Cuts is a weekly newsletter from curator/video game industry veteran Simon Carless, rounding up the best longread & standout articles & videos about games, every weekend. This week's highlights include videos on the making of Raw Data & the surprise debut of Scanner Sombre, plus the history of seminal NES emulator NESticle.
A quick and early newsletter this week, since we're in Texas for a few days visiting friends game-centric & non game-centric - among them Venus Patrol/ex-IGF supremo Brandon Boyer (& world's cutest megadog Scout), as well as Gamasutra publisher/EIC Kris Graft.
One thing I did find interesting from the links I still managed to excavate, though - the recent GDC video linked below about the making of VR standout Raw Data has a fairly high dislike-to-like ratio compared to other GDC videos (more dislikes than normal).
Why? Well, partly because the game dared to hit Early Access at $40 USD with a fairly linear story, by the look of it. If the hope was that VR would ensnare the 'core gamer', I'm starting to wonder whether VR experiences are even core gamer-compatible in terms of narrative, linearity & replayability. Which would be a pretty big stumbling block, if true... Anyhow, until next time?

Being NPCsplained at with screeds of exposition and feeling you’re taking little meaningful part in it all, game dialogue can make you want to run back into the hills."
[Game] Story - What Is It Good For? (Thomas Grip / Gamasutra Blogs) "This "go write a book instead" attitude isn't new. One of my favorite articles on the subject is Jesper Juul's "Games Telling Stories?". Interestingly, I pretty much agree with all of the points that Juul raises, but reject most of his conclusions.
