Sorry guys. I'm ranting about Joel again because djskakaka that's my favorite guy. This post is a direct result of the tags in a post I reblogged and I just HAD TO TALK ABOUT IT MORE.
Okay, so Joel always carries himself to high regard. He has lots of confidence in himself, is generally apathetic and dry to any matter that doesn't concern him, and he overall loves to bite back at things. He's a big fan of chaos and violence, and stays generally bitter when things go badly for him. He can be ruthless and reckless and that's just natural for him because he's one of the many Life Series wolf-coded characters.
But something about Joel in Secret Life is just...kind? He's kind and caring, in his Joel Smallishbeans way. Especially in later sessions.
In Etho's little remembering the past era, he reassures him that he does still care for him. When Lizzie invites everyone to her party in a rushed frenzy, he attends because he thinks it's only fair. When Pearl was apprehensive about her task being guessed, he purposefully wastes his guess so she doesn't have to be worried around him. He trusts Jimmy to assist him with his task even while everyone else is cautious about his red name status. And when it all came down to it, Joel tells Martyn to stay back after all the reds have dropped like flies because even if all the reds were a threat to them, he still didn't want to see them all die in one episode.
In Secret Life, Joel still has everything he's always had. He's still bloodthirsty and holds silly grudges, evident with the whole Scott thing this session. He's still cheeky and likes to mess around and make sarcastic comments often, but at the end of the day he's Joel. He tends to stay loyal to his allies and I think he's more thoughtful than lots of people realize.
This may be part of the reason I love the Mounders. They were all sort of distant in the way they would wander off and do their own thing, but when it came down to it, they always stuck by each other. They remained loyal despite what seemed to be really loose ends tying them all together, and that means SO much to me! I guess it makes sense though; a team with the lonely wolf girl from Double Life and the lonely wolf boy from Last Life were enough to neutralize the whole, "Bdubs can be kinda disloyal" thing and the whole "Mumbo was apprehensive of any color lesser than he was" thing.
Anyways. Life Series Joel Smallishbeans. That's my guy bro...THAT'S MY GUYYYYYY
Also! The post that inspired this was by @simplydm! Their post about Joel's comment to Martyn reminded me how much that scene made me orbit around the moon so I thought they deserved to mentioned in this. Sorry to them if uh they didn't want to be tagged though. I will remove it if that ends up being the case!

Scar's busy trying to make their rock look prettier. Cleo leans against it. It's cold against their back; good. They still feel the heat of burning mansions and anger and TNT and burning pyres. They don't have long now until they're yellow. Both they and Scar know exactly what they'll do then.
They and Scar do, at least.
Bdubs is loudly muttering indistinct things to himself while repeatedly shoving a hoe into an enchantment table. Cleo watches for a bit.
"Scar and I have some people to get revenge on tomorrow," Cleo says.
Bdubs nods. "Oh yes. Those nasty Bad Boys, they won't know what's coming to them! Just as soon as I finish dealing with this stupid hoe."
Scar snickers from the corner. "But Bdubs, I thought that was -"
"HEY!" Bdubs says. "WATCH IT!"
"Yeah Bdubs, I thought you were good with your hoes," Cleo says, because they've never been one to let a joke like that just go by.
"I'll have you know that I'm excellent at handling hoes. The best at it. The best at hoes," Bdubs says. Scar laughs so loud he nearly chokes.
"Wow, didn't need to know you thought that," Cleo says.
"I'm - no you idiots!" Bdubs says. "You're putting things in my mouth!"
"Like the hoes?" Scar says.
"Screw you guys," Bdubs says, huffing and returning to the steady chime of the enchantment table and grind of the grindstone. Cleo tries to catch her breath again through the laughter to remember her original point.
Wiping at her eyes, she leans back. "To be honest though, I have no idea what your plans are. You sort of just... vanished today?"
"Yeah. We lost you," Scar says. "Not very responsible parenting. Or older sibling-ing."
"Who said you were older?" grumps Bdubs.
"Well you see, the older sibling is normally taller, and -"
"Boys," Cleo says. They both stop.
"Sorry mom," Scar says, sounding not even remotely sorry.
"I regret you two," Cleo says.
"Awww. But you love us," Bdubs says.
"Absolutely not," Cleo says. "Besides, you're dodging my question. Where were you?"
"Well, I can't just tell you that," Bdubs says. "Then people will know!"
Cleo and Scar are both quiet for a long moment.
"That's sort of the point? It'll just be us," Scar says. "Us, your partners in crime, knowing where you were. That's all we're asking."
Bdubs harumphs. "And I said I'm not telling. They'll know if I tell you. The people who are watching. And they don't get to know, you hear me? Nope, I'm a man of mystery. I'm here to keep them guessing, I am!"
Cleo and Scar glance at each other. Scar is grimacing. Ah. He knows what Bdubs is talking about, doesn't he. Cleo's not sure they do. They almost do, but clearly not in the same way Scar does.
Still, they know enough.
Cleo huffs overdramatically. "Fine then. Keep your secrets. See if I tell you mine."
"You can't have secrets! You're our mom!" Scar says.
"You have a bizarre idea of how this works," Cleo says.
"Aha!" Bdubs says. "A - no I read it wrong. Gosh darn it."
He puts the hoe in the grindstone again, washing off whatever he'd enchanted it with. Cleo leans back against the wall to cool the burns they still feel. They prepare for the next morning.

“Do you have a clock yet?” Impulse asked.
It was a warm day, the bright sunlight sweetened by the gentle breeze off the sea. Everything was new, the next chapter in the life series, and yet, some things stayed the same.
Bdubs searched his inventory. “I don’t, actually, no!”
Tango made some joke about not being able to sleep away the night here, and under that cover of laughter and jokes, Impulse stole down to the rudimentary hole he, Tango, Skizz, and Etho were calling home. Perhaps it was a little silly, to use resources so frivolously like this, but Impulse didn’t care.
Every time Impulse made a clock, he was always surprised how easy the recipe really was. Some redstone, a bit of gold. It felt almost juvenile that such a simple thing held so much weight and history within it.
When the clock was finished, Impulse flipped open the lid and picked up a small knife someone had left around- probably Etho- and began scratching letters into the golden surface.
“Well, I better be off, I’m sure Scar and Cleo are missing me.” Impulse heard Bdubs say from above. He snapped the clock closed, panicked, and raced back up to the surface.
“Wait, Bdubs!” He thrust the clock into Bdubs’ hands. “For you. For old times sake, huh? And maybe a bit of a bribe to not target me.” Impulse laughed, and Bdubs smiled down at the clock.
“Oh, thank you, Impulse!” Bdubs replied, putting it in his off-hand. “For old time’s sake.”
——
“Listen, Bdubs, I have something for you.” Cleo said. It was, if Cleo had to guess, the last day the Clockers would be alive. They were all rushing around, gathering materials and weapons. “You don’t happen to have a clock, do you?”
“Uhh…” Bdubs dug in his pockets for a moment. “I do! Impulse gave it to me way back on the first day!”
“Of course he did.” Cleo muttered, rolling her eyes slightly. “Listen, we can give you a better one. Give it to me.”
Bdubs handed it over, and Cleo went down to their family anvil, ignoring Scar’s babbling.
It was a standard clock, she saw as she looked down at it properly, with a golden lid with a window to the top half of the clock- if you were in a rush, the top was all you needed to tell the time. Cleo took out her tools, and popped the lid, intending to carve something into the back side of the clock lid. It clicked open, revealing the simple sun and moon that told the time, and the scratchings that were already cut into the back of the lid.
For my soulmate -i
“Oh, Impulse.” Cleo murmured softly. She ran her thumb across the letters, tracing each one like she knew Impulse would have wanted someone else to do.
It was so painfully Impulse. Despite some mistakes in his past, he was sweet and kind and loving. And a bit of a bastard, but that was besides the point- weren’t they all. The clock was a given- of course it had been Impulse to give Bdubs a clock. It wasn’t hard to see how much Impulse adored him. And the inscription… Cleo sighed. There was no way that Bdubs had seen it. She brushed away the metal dust that marred the letters slightly; Impulse had probably been in a hurry and hasn’t had time to brush them off yet. Bdubs wouldn’t have let it sit in his pocket like that if he’d known… or maybe he would have. Bdubs was surprisingly unreadable sometimes.
She closed the lid gently, and flipped the clock over onto its back. There she carved out her own message for Bdubs.
mamma’s favourite boy
She buffed her carving with a cloth that looked like it had come from Scar’s shirt, until the gold shined. It wasn’t really about who loved Bdubs more- there’s more then one way to love a person, and no one was adored the way Bdubs was. He would carry two peoples love with him today. Even if he didn’t know it.

(Divine Poly Soup Group, Implied Grian x Scar x Mumbo)
When Gem (Goddess of Nature) and Impulse (God of Wealth) started dating Pearl (Goddess of the Moon), they kinda expected her older brother Grian to pull them aside for a chat.
What they did not expect is Grian somehow killing them both with the sun. When they respawned, he told them if either one broke Pearl’s heart they’d get an early visit from Cleo (Goddess of Death).
In Grian’s defense, Pearl did something similar with Scar and Mumbo when they first started dating.
Bonus dialogue:
“How did we get killed by the sun?? We’re gods!”
“Yeah, so is Grian. And he’s the sun god, so-”
“Wait really? I thought it was Bdubs.”
“Nope! Bdubs is sleep, remember?”
The thing is, Gem would say she's pretty good friends with Cleo as well. So she guesses it's mutually assured destruction. Not that they have any intention of hurting Pearl, they're a very healthy relationship thank you! Born over a love of good soup.
Pearl found the whole thing hilarious, with an empathetic pat on Impulse's shoulder and giggled, "That's Gri for you." So it's good to know, at least, that it isn't them specifically he has a problem with.

The Watcher's hands weave threads of green and gold and red throughout those Grian loves.
And in those threads the Watchers tie souls. Souls bound in love. Souls bound in pain. Souls bound between one another. Some try to fight it--insisting that they are not soulmates, that their soul belongs to another, but it's a tiresome, futile effort to reject the manipulation of the soul.
Not that Grian thinks so.
He's seen how the others react as they try to reject their soulmates. Scott thinks of Pearl constantly, dotes on her well-being, obsessively calls her to him under the guise of toying with her. Martyn sobs for Cleo. BDubs panics when Impulse is too far from him.
The Watcher's threads are strong.
But not to Grian.
"We're not soulmates," he insists one evening, the harsh words riding on the breeze rushing pass their base and off into the ravine.
He's perched atop pointed dripstone, watching lazily as Scar puts the Jellie pandas to sleep. His friend looks up at Grian with a start, brow quirked in a teasing glance. "Oh?"
"Yep," Grian goes on. Clipped wings help him leap from the cake and onto the perimeter of the Jellie Sanctuary. "Big B's my soulmate now. Just so you know."
Scar snorts then turns back the Jellies, feeding one bamboo. "Well, alright then!"
Grian squints. "Seriously. I'm leaving you. Big B and I are running away together."
"Right."
"Far away," Grian says, placing emphasis on the distance as he looks to the sky, pretending not to be drinking in Scar's every reaction. "We're gonna build our own ranch in the mountains. Farm goats."
"Sounds nice."
"Without you."
"Just remember to eat," Scar says with hum, scratching beneath a Jellie's chin. "I'll try not to get us on Red!"
But the red has already infiltrated Grian's soul, shown through a burning in his cheeks. He puffs them out in frustration (a little more bird-like than he'd prefer) feathers at his back fluffing in a similar response as he jumps into the sanctuary.
It spooks the Jellies and a few grumble in response, the one nearly tipping Scar's chair backwards. Scar rights himself with a laugh, finally meeting Grian's eyes.
And he's fine. No hidden jealousy, no subtle longing. Nothing. He's...
He's fine.
Grian puffs up a bit more. "Do you not care if I leave?"
Scar finally seems to register Grian's tone and sobers. He tilts his head, full attention on Grian.
Finally.
"Do you want me to?" Scar asks, and Grian feels like he could explode.
"YES!! We're soulmates! We should be doing what the others are, shouldn't we? Being alone should sound miserable!"
Scar just offers a confused chuckle, looking around the sanctuary as if the Jellies could help him escape. "Well it doesn't sound fun but I don't own you, G. If you want to leave, you can leave!"
"But--" Grian fumbles for words, trying his best to soothe a soul that won't calm. He ends up just crossing his arms. "This isn't how the game goes. Everyone else--they want to be together, they're obsessed with each other. Why aren't we?"
"Because we're not them?" Scar guesses. He's clicked off his brakes so he can move closer to Grian, offering a hand. "Why do you want to be?"
Grian looks away from the open palm.
He doesn't know. He doesn't know why this is so important to him, why he wants to see Scar get worked up and angry and insist that they're meant to be together. He doesn't know why this has him panicking.
Everyone else--their soulmates are their everythings, but no matter what Grian does, Scar's attention can easily find something else. Does that mean he doesn't care?
"Gri?"
Grian sniffs. "You do care, right? About me? You like being soulmates?"
Scar laughs, a bit more genuine in his surprise. "Of course I do! Did you think I didn't?"
"Maybe?" Grian shrugs and, finally, places a hand in Scar's offered palm. Familiar fingers wrap around his, and he's happy to let the sensation calm him. "I just don't get why it hasn't affected us like everyone else. Guess I figured something was wrong."
"Something wrong--?" Scar shakes his head and tugs an unsuspecting Grian forward, the man squawking a bit as he falls forward and into Scar's lap. Scar immediately traps him in a hug, pressing their foreheads together.
When he speaks again it's with a fond smile and a faux British accent. "'I am in your service until you lose your first life'."
The anger disperses at the poor mockery and Grian snorts, making an attempt to shove Scar away. "That's borderline offensive!"
Scar only pulls Grian closer, a teasing glint in his eye. "'I don't want to see him go! I just can't let him go!'"
"Alright," Grian laughs, and he gives in. He melts in Scar's arms, wings a curtain of feathers separating them from the Jellies. And they're alone. And they're together. And Grian is putty in Scar's lap, sturdy arms holding him close. "What's all this then?"
"Proof," Scar says, voice normal again. "And accent practice."
Grian shakes his head. "Needs work. And proof of what?"
"That we're soulmates." Scar's hand moves from Grian's back to his chest, plucking the ethereal thread between them. "The Watchers didn't tie this, Grian. We did. Back when this all started."
"I don't--"
"If we aren't like everyone else, it's because they're all new to this! They've never been bound to someone else before. But we have." Scar's fingers roll into an open palm pressed firmly over Grian's heart. He can feel his heart race at the sensation, and Scar's follows. "We're soulmates, Grian."
And Grian collapses. Tears which threatened his eyes spill and he shifts to wrap his arms around Scar, chests pressed together so that two synced hearts might combine. He buries his face in Scar's neck and Scar holds him.
Scar holds him.
"We're soulmates," Grian whispers to the wind and the evening stars.
And a loyal partner whispers back: "We're soulmates."

==========================================================
“Bdubs.”
“Yes, my love?”
Etho smiled.
“I have a theory.”
Bdubs looked up at Etho from his place on the dirt, already pulling off his gardening gloves.
“A theory? What, you a scientist or something?” he snickered. Etho offered him a hand to get to his feet, and he took it.
“If I’m a scientist, I’m not a very good one,” he chuckled. “But I guess I’m just curious. You wanna test it out with me?”
They had been more than a human and his android friend for a while now, so Etho had taken to his own head to do a bit of… personal research. He wanted to show more affection in the way humans did, just to show Bdubs how much he cared, and he’d found some, confusing but interesting results. After looking into it further and diving deep into some sketchy forums, he was pretty sure this would work.
Bdubs rose an eyebrow, frowning.
“With you?” He narrowed his eyes, crossing his arms over his chest. “This isn’t something… weird, is it? Because that’s the vibe I’m getting here!”
Etho rose an eyebrow.
“Weird? How so?”
“Like- Like, I dunno! It seems like you’re propositioning me for somethin’!”
“Is that what you think of me? Wow, Bdubs-”
“No, no no! Don’t you twist my words-” Bdubs huffed, then stamped his foot in the dirt. “Gah! You always do this! Seriously, they make you things way too smart-” He pinched his brows. “Nevermind. You can’t just ask me to test something with you while looking at me like- Like that! It’s weird, and you’re making Bdubs’ mind go to places Bdubs’ mind shouldn’t!”
Etho blinked.
“Looking at you like what?” He wasn’t making a face, was he? Bdubs couldn’t even see half of his face! There was no way he could tell what he was thinking just by looking at his eyes-
“Nevermind! Let’s just-” Bdubs waved a hand and turned, “-go do whatever it is you want me to. Make this quick, though – I’ve got moss to get back to!”
“Your moss will be just fine, don’t worry,” Etho smiled, taking Bdubs’ hand to lead him back to the house.
They got a few feet further before Bdubs grumbled, “I can walk myself, y’know,” but he didn’t let go.
Etho led him inside and shut the door. He let Bdubs set his things down and get comfortable, watching him quietly. Eventually, Bdubs stopped trotting around, absentmindedly mumbling to himself, and stood in front of Etho again with his hands on his hips. He narrowed his eyes again.
"What's this experiment then, huh? You gonna strap me to a table and probe me or something?"
"If that's what you want, then-"
"No! Don't finish that sentence! I don't want that at all!"
Etho laughed, "Really? Are you-"
"Yes I'm sure!" Bdubs poked him in the chest. "Just get on with it!"
Etho stepped closer to Bdubs, studying him for a moment. He noted that his body temperature had risen, his face subtly flushed, but didn't think much of it. He was just outside working all day, after all. It only made sense.
"Close your eyes."
Bdubs frowned.
"What, are you gonna rob me or something? You know I've got nothin' worth robbing!" He crossed his arms over his chest, moss shedding from his sleeves with the movement. Etho made a note to buy a lint roller later.
"I know. I carry your things for you,” he deadpanned, earning some more disgruntled noises from Bdubs.
“Ugh, fine! I guess I’ll do it,” he huffed and turned his nose up. He squeezed his eyes shut, and Etho watched him carefully. He waited, just a few seconds, and Bdubs peeked just one eye open.
“Liar,” he teased, and Bdubs threw his arms up.
“You didn’t do anything! You’re tellin’ me to close my eyes and then not doing anything, how am I not gonna look?! You could be stealing my stuff!”
“What stuff?”
“Oh you-” Bdubs snapped his mouth shut, cutting himself off, then turned. He walked a little circle before planting himself right back in the same spot, reassuming his arms-crossed stance. “Fine, I’ll actually close my eyes this time. Happy?”
Etho watched him shut his eyes a second time and smiled, “Very.”
He waited another moment and, when Bdubs didn’t open his eyes again, he stepped closer.
Careful, he thought. It is a delicate process for humans to get to this step in their relationships. I cannot mess this up.
He brought his hand up to gently grace Bdubs’ cheek, fingers brushing warm skin. He caught the sharp inhale from the other, and he hesitated.
“Is this alright?”
Bdubs just nodded, his jaw taught and shoulders tense. Etho worried he’d overstepped.
“I need verbal confirmation.” He didn’t, but he wanted it.
“Yes- I said make this quick, didn’t I?”
Etho hummed, “Yes, you can’t leave your moss waiting.”
His fingers slid further back, his palm cupping Bdubs’ face. He was warm to the touch, and for a moment Etho worried he was developing a fever when he remembered that this was normal in this situation. He dipped his hand down to trace Bdubs’ jaw, pausing as he felt the pulse pick up beneath his touch.
120 BPM, he measured. Interesting.
He pressed his palm to Bdubs’ skin, cupping his cheek. He felt him shift his weight, eyes catching the way he moved his foot over the floor, his hand slipping from Bdubs’ face as he moved away.
“Hold still for me,” Etho instructed. He couldn’t do this properly if Bdubs continued to squirm.
“I am!”
“You’re not, though.”
Bdubs huffed through his nose, then promptly stopped his fidgeting.
“Thank you,” Etho hummed softly. He swiped his thumb over Bdubs’ skin, and realized he was just stalling. He knew why; Bdubs was human, and he wasn’t. As much research as he’d done couldn’t equal natural ability – instinct. No matter how hard he tried, he could never quite understand fully.
But this could be the first step to trying, and he knew trying was better than nothing. He couldn’t mess this up; he had to take it slow.
Unluckily for him, Bdubs happened to be one of the most impatient people on earth.
“Is this the theory? Are you reading my mind or something? I didn’t give you permission to read my mind – you don’t wanna know what goes on in there!” he rambled. “Not that it’s anything bad, I just don’t think you could handle it. Bdubs’ mind is powerful, you know.”
Etho laughed.
“Shhh. I’m sure it is, but you know I can’t read minds. We’ve been over this before.”
“I know, but you could be lyin’ to me! You’ve done it before-”
“Not on purpose.”
“-and you wouldn’t hesitate to do it again!”
Etho was quickly realizing that if he wanted Bdubs to be quiet, he’d have to make him. He leaned in closer, their faces inches apart. He used his free hand to pull down his mask.
“Bdubs.”
He watched the other’s mouth stop before he said another word, shutting for a moment before he spoke.
“What? What is it? Do I have something on my face?”
Etho was quiet for a moment, then remembered something he’d found in his research. Perfect. He smirked.
“You don’t, and that’s the problem.”
He closed the distance between their lips finally, ignoring the warning flashing at the edge of his vision. He could hear the thirium rushing through his body; he could almost feel Bdubs’ lips against his. Almost.
Their kiss was short, though, because Bdubs quickly shoved him away to an arm’s length, hands grabbing Etho’s shoulders in what could only be bewilderment. His eyes were wide, his mouth was open, and his face was flushed bright red.
“What the hell are you doing?! Why- What-” he stumbled over his words, barely able to form a sentence. “You’re- You just kissed me! Why?! Why would you do that?!”
Etho blinked. He drew his hand back.
“Is that… Is kissing not, okay? I thought-”
“I don’t care what you thought! Why would you do that?! You’re- You’re-” Bdubs stuttered, hands not leaving Etho’s shoulders. Etho dreaded the words he was stuck on, his chest aching already. He wished it was just his thirium pump acting up.
“I’m… not human. I know.” He finished the sentence for him, eyes cast to the ground. “I read that it’s something you do when you want to show affection for someone. I can’t really, you know, do that in the way I would, uh, as an android, with you.” He looked up again, putting a hand over Bdubs’ as he met his eyes. “I overstepped, I’m sorry.”
Bdubs just stared at him, blank-faced. Etho searched his features, trying to find any hint that his apology had been accepted, but Bdubs only blinked.
Then, he laughed.
“Whaat? What are you talking about?” He dropped his hands from Etho’s shoulders. “I’m not mad! I just- I don’t get where all this is comin’ from! I mean, first off, it’s weird kissin’ you- Not in a bad way! Just- I don’t think you were made for that. Your lips are all weird and rubbery and-”
Etho sighed in relief, hanging his head. He put a hand on Bdubs’ shoulder, balancing himself as he laughed loud. Bdubs stopped rambling and frowned.
“What? What’s so funny? Why are you laughing?”
Etho just shook his head, chuckling.
“I’m just so relieved!" he gasped, though he didn't even need the air. "I thought you hated me for a second!"
"I couldn't hate you! If I hated you, you would'a been gone a long time ago, I'll tell you that much." He turned his nose up, then gave Etho a quizzical look. "I just don't get it. You can't even feel any of- well, that! Why kiss me if you're gettin' nothing outta it? It doesn't make any sense!"
Etho's laughter died off, but he let his hand linger on Bdubs' shoulder. He processed the question for a moment, then looked the other in his eyes again.
"I do feel it, though. I'm not supposed to, but I do."
Bdubs rose an eyebrow. He stepped just a pace closer.
"Really? How?" He tilted his head just a few degrees to the right, the action catching Etho's eyes easily. He stared for a moment, fondness warming a smile on his face, before he answered.
"This." He pointed to the damage on the left of his face, touching the part closest to his lips. "It's not a lot, but since I never got it repaired, I have touch sensations here."
Bdubs nodded, hand on his chin as he hummed and thought for a moment. Etho dropped his hand from his shoulder.
"Really? So…" He stepped closer. Etho took the cue, leaning down so they were eye level. "So if I kissed you here, you'd feel it more?"
He put a hand up, just brushing the damaged area. Etho felt it, the warmth of Bdubs' skin flooding his face.
It was… different. Not weird. Just different.
"Yes," he breathed, afraid to move too much.
A warning flashed, "Thirium Pump Irregularity Detected."
Shut up.
Bdubs grinned. His hand pulled Etho's face in closer. Their lips brushed.
"I don't need 'verbal confirmation' for this, do I?"
Etho smiled, "No, you don't."

Did you regret it? Any of it?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not one thing. Tango shakes his head with a grin. I wouldn’t change it for the world
You should. Jimmy mumbles, flowers wilted and falling out his hair. If I were you, I would
What is there to regret? The best ranch around? Raising a Warden from the depths of the earth? Having a soulmate who can steal horses, build us a nice house, and go along with all my crazy schemes? He throws an arm around Jimmy’s shoulders.
And Jimmy smiles. Well, I guess I don’t regret anything either, then
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You kidding me?! I regret dying like an absolute noob! Ren shouts, trying to kick at a pebble
I dunno. I had fun building Box. BigB shrugs, sitting on the cobble steps.
Ren stops to look up at him. You don’t regret anything? He asks
Hurting you. BigB replies, after a slight hesitation. And Ren nods.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not getting revenge for my Jellies. Scar sighs, staring wistfully at the ashen remains of his panda sanctuary.
Is that seriously it? The pandas? Grian stands next to him, mouth twisted into an exhausted frown
Well, not killing Joel and Etho for burning the sanctuary down. He thinks a moment. And for getting us both killed, I guess.
Yeah. You and me both
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joel stomps around the ruins of the Relation Ship. I wish I took Scott’s final life. I wish I never went to the stupid Nether.
I wish you didn’t take me along. Etho chuckles.
You went on your own. I wish we didn’t die to a stupid trapped portal.
That’s true. Etho nods. I didn’t want to let you go on your own.
I wish the Relation Ship didn’t get burnt. I wish we could’ve rebuilt. I wish I killed more people.
You hear this guy? Etho jerks a thumb at Joel. Had to put up with this day and night
Shut up. You love me.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I regret ever killing Pearl’s stupid mangy dog. Bdubs laughs. She’s nuts over the thing!
I think I might’ve killed Tilly. Impulse taps his chin.
Bdubs waves it off. Ah, who cares. At least we went out together.
Impulse smiles, then points at him. You know what? I regret that the pool never went green.
I know! Biggest tragedy of the whole damn thing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What do you regret, Martyn? Cleo stares at him coldly.
Martyn chuckles and scratches his leg. Pushing you off the bridge. I think we would’ve won, otherwise.
What else?
What else?! This is very one sided and very targeted. What do you regret, Cleo?
She’s silent a moment. I wouldn’t have changed anything.
It’s all me then. Clearly I’m the toxic one in this relationship
They smile at each other.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I regret that Tilly wasn’t my real soulmate. Pearl grins.
I regret not blowing you up instead. Scott lies with a smile
Oh, you wouldn’t have. You’re a softie.
I regret that Cleo wasn’t my soulbound. She was my true and real soulmate.
That’s hurtful! Pearl giggles. She stares at her lap a moment. I wish they didn’t turn on us
Scott pats her on the shoulder.

Note
I wouldn't consider myself a analysist, because I'm not big brained nor have good enough memory for that; but like (and this may be my bias speaking) double life changed life!Pearl so much in the way it just amplified her already existing traits. She's very sheep in a wolf's clothing to me especially after dl made her even more disenchanted with the inherent isolation of later life sessions (what w/ being forced into that by day one of dl, immediately distrusted at a level only just barely below reds themselves). Like I could be getting the characterazation completely wrong, as I don't remember the seasons very well, but Pearl's playstyle very much feels like she's just capitalizing on her "hidden" chaos, being the kindest ally but also down to be unhinged when the moment calls for it, losing that kindness so fast in double life from being rejected and never getting it back nearly as strong as before. I feel like life!Pearl has gotten so use to the games and Watcher schennagins at this point that she just leans hard into the premise and her innate chaos <2 (can you tell she's my favourite character lol /silly)
Post-DL!Pearl I love her especially! Do I think she’s even more chaotic than she was in DL? No but for sure DL changed her like Whwhwh permanently she’s my fave winner bc of how prevalent that development is, to make those choices on her terms - not bc the game tells her to. Her POVs are very refreshing bc -in compare to everyone else- she’s so relaxed (bc she’s won before), and she makes it clear she’s not here to win (she already has)- she wants to have fun and uplift her friends :]
Her around ppl that aren’t her teammates is… a wildcard- but the trust in her allies is unshakeable. she reminds me of a mentor figure to them she wants what’s best for the team…. I don’t like the way ppl have been undermining the Mounders this season bc they aren’t attached at the hip 24/7, to Pearl they mean a lot to her SHE chose them and vice versa. so much that they’ll mutually go do things behind the other’s back that would help them survive in the long run and she trusts them with her LIFE. This especially between Pearl and Bdubs and their allyship makes me so delirious evrrytime she brings him up I’m getting Nosy Neighbours deja vu :[
“They’re Mounders (Joel and Bdubs), they would never betray me like that.” -Pearl ep6
“You can’t just TAKE him (Bdubs), he’s a Mounder.” -Pearl ep5 in the building competition
[the whole thing with Joel and Bdubs wasting their yellow-life guesses for Pearl ep6]
“I’m not here to win. I here for Bdubs to win.” -Pearl ep6
“I can’t. I can’t… she’s (Pearl) my biggest cheerleader. I can’t do that do her.” -Bdubs ep6
That part in SL Session 6 when Pearl, her dogs, and Bdubs hid in the skeleton farm away from the Wither/Warden fight, and when a red name (Martyn) found them- I wonder if she was ever scared the game would take Bdubs too like it did to BigB last season… I mean it already took Mumbo.

Etho Session 3 Liveblog:
slkdfjklsdjfsl 18 seconds in and I'm already losing it.
Etho: "I'm here with Cleo! :) Cleo's looking at the sky... because Cleo likes the sky. So blue, so pretty. She might've got hit by a car and now her neck is broken."
Etho bemoaning the lack of water, then turning around like "Oh, here it is. I'll just make an infinite source block."
Etho following Bdubs around and dunking water on him.
Bdubs: "??? Why are you trying to wash me??"
This is especially funny in the context of Bdubs in Session 2 accidentally relapsing into the roleplay of being Cleo and Etho's kid before Cleo reminded him that was a different series slkdjf.
sldkfj Bdubs peering out the window at the needy boys like "Oh, that's sweet, they've got BigB... I really wanted them to find another."
?? Etho is my 3rd POV. I've seen Tango and Grian so far and this is my first close-up on Impulse. What's that man doing with his skin? Did he kintsuji his face?
slkdjf Etho getting three hearts from the Heart Foundation. His first two decisions are to run to Cleo and tell them they need to bring their enchanting table over to share, then to give Cleo his heart.
Smart move by Etho to approach Pearl and offer to help her when his job is to attempt sabotage.
Me watching Martyn accuse Pearl, having already seen Tango's POV and knowing they did a lot of backpedaling and back and forth and checking the footage to see if Martyn had already used his one accusation of the session, and knowing the result was that they do let Martyn fail Tango: "Uh-oh."
Me watching Jimmy do something similar with Mumbo because I'm pretty sure he also made an attempt to call Tango out: "Uh-oh."
All fun and games in the end, though. Gotta be human and make mistakes; keeps you humble.
Oh now I'm putting together the pieces, Etho's going to confess his love to Joel in the end in an attempt to make people believe he has the same task as Scott... Although he did re-roll his "make someone believe you have the same" task, so hmm...
[Watching a few more minutes] - Gotcha, Grian cut the part out of his video where he told Etho to go say "I love you" to someone.
slksjdf so let me get this straight, Etho was given the job of saying "I love you" to someone with the attempt to make them say it back, knowing full well that Scott successfully got Cleo to say "I love you" back to him, and Etho STILL chooses to pursue Joel and say "I love you" to him instead of Cleo, his basing partner this season. Incredible. No notes. Long live the Boat Boy goofballs.
?? Again Jimmy accuses Etho of a task, so maybe Yellows are just allowed to guess until they get it right? In which case both Martyn and Jimmy are in the clear. I may have misunderstood the rules; will have to watch more POVs to be sure.
Etho's so good at throwing people off his trail with false tasks. He spends the session dumping water buckets on people and building walls to separate people for no reason.
Mumbo calls him "washed up" and Etho immediately dumps the water bucket on himself slkdjf. GG.

SWAP COMPLETE.
Your name is Bdubs. You are currently sitting on a bench on the street in your coworker's neighborhood. About a block down the road, there's a bar you've personally decided must at least be a little evil. On either side of you, your coworkers are mother henning you. It's unnecessary. They both know you've done this song and dance before.
They both hate you've done this song and dance before.
Whatever. Two more years and you're done with your contractual obligations, and you'll have enough hazard pay that you and Etho and Cleo can all go retire to like, you don't know, a town outside a ski resort in Colorado or something. Live where all them rich, fancy celebrities live. Or, well, maybe not that, but retire to the country and you can finally actually use that architecture degree you sold your soul for. Maybe.
Anyway, none of that matters that much, given that, at the moment, you're still reeling from both having briefly been someone else (what?) and also no longer having a migraine (this should be fine but it's weirder than you thought it would be).
"I'm going to do it. I'm going to kill a general of the United States Army," mutters Cleo. "I'm actually going to do it."
"Chill out!" you shout, irritated.
"You chill out! I just watched you nearly collapse for no reason but the thing they put in your neck!"
"Yeah, well, it's supposed to help me be better, isn't it? Wouldn't'a done it if there weren't upsides."
"Oh, I can name a few reasons they would--"
"Wouldn't'a sent me out on a mission if there weren't upsides, or at least, few enough downsides to make it worth it," you clarify. Cleo shuts her mouth and looks away. Yeah. Okay. Okay.
You take stock of everything that's happened since you left base two days ago:
You've been dizzy.
You've been nauseous.
You've been having trouble sleeping--weird, because you could fall asleep on a bed of nails directly in front of stadium lights, but there you are.
You've been getting migraines.
You've been--weird. You don't know how to put it. You've been weird. Cleo knows it. You know it. You're pretty sure in the like, three hours worth of talking you've done to Etho today, he knows it.
There's been something scratching at the back of your head, like it's trying to get in.
It's stopped. You don’t think that’s because it’s gone. You suspect it’s because it won.
You have to admit Cleo has a point. You aren't going to say anything, though. She's already mad enough she might commit a federal crime and get you both disappeared for, you aren't sure, threatening the integrity of classified military experiments? Like, you're not sure you own the thing they implanted in you, which is--
Which is--
Focus. It doesn't matter for today. For right now. As long as you stop Cleo from committing a murder, you're probably all good.
"Uhh, guys, you two... okay?" Etho asks.
"Peachy," you say. "Don't even have a headache anymore."
"I hate that they do this to you," Cleo says.
"Yeah, uh, count me in. Towards. The hating things," Etho says awkwardly. God, you love that man. No one else could declare his loyalty so badly. "So I guess you're allergic to alcohol now or something?"
"What? No, that can't be it," you say. "I refuse. If I don't get a beer after this I'm suing."
Cleo huffs. "Well, if I have to perform CPR because you try to drink a beer, that's not my fault."
"Oh, screw you."
A shudder runs through your skull. It rings like a bell. You stick out your tongue and don't say anything yet; you'll put it down in the stupid diary later.
[CONNECTION GRANTED.]
Besides, the sooner you get your current job done, the sooner you can go home and ignore all of this.

Hermitcraft cooking tier-list
Tumblr media
as compiled by @mawofthemagnetar and I with further explanations below the line
Great Food, Totally Safe
This cook will make sure your food is safe and tasty no matter your species! Pretty self-explanatory.
VintageBeef - All butchers are great cooks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Renthedog - Great at grilling, even if he generally prefers meat on the rare side. His steak tartar is to die for.
Impulse - While his area of interest is more centered around candy, he can make you a decent dinner.
EvilXisuma - He learned how to cook out of spite. Major stress-baker vibes.
Iskall, PearlescentMoon, GeminiTay, Welsknight - These guys are all functional adults. They can cook.
Great Food, but Watch Out
This cook will make you a wonderfully tasting dish. However, it might not be harmless. Eat at your own risk.
ZombieCleo - Your meal will be meticulously prepared with skill, love, and heart (often literally). Its a shame the only people fully capable of appreciating her hard work are fellow members of the undead.
JoeHills - The food will be either great or a biohazard. Its anyone's guess which one it'll be this time. That's the Joe Hills Difference.
CubFan and GTWS - While the food will be excellent, the Vex have odd rules surrounding food. Make sure you have a lawyer present.
StressMonster - She may be a great baker, however those skills do not necessarily transfer. Compliment her pastry, steer clear of her casserole.
Mediocre in all contexts
Not good, nor hazardous. The plain white toast bread of cooks.
TFC, xBCrafted, Etho - Bachelor pad people with bachelor diets. Can make a store-bought mac-n-cheese.
Xisuma, FalseSymmetry, Hypnotizd - They just eat MRE's. Can cook an egg if need be.
The food will be Bad
Self-explanatory. You will not leave the table feeling good about yourself.
MumboJumbo - The man is incapable of handling the pressure of cooking for another person. The end product is not worth the emotional toll.
Grian - Under not circumstance should this man be given access to an oven.
Zedaph - His food is not contaminated thanks to his proper PPE usage. That is the highest compliment anyone could give.
That is a Biohazard, Do Not Eat
Just don't.
Keralis - oh you know, (read EHK series for context)
DocM77 - Despite being Ren's grilling buddy, he will put redstone on the food and forget to tell you about that. Do not eat.
TangoTek - Believes that blaze powder is an appropriate spice to use. Do not eat.
Bdubs - This man will eat things out of the garbage. Unless you can guarantee the ingredient's freshness - Do not eat.
iJevin - He isn't fully in on what is appropriate to feed humans. Preparing and cooking food seems like a waste of time. Absorbing it whole is much more efficient. Do not eat.

HEAR ME OUT
Scar as Apollo and Gem as Artemis…
Starting with Gem;
-HER ANTLERS!! Deer are sacred animals to Artemis and she is also the goddess of the moon and thats so shiny duo crumbs (pearl as the moon).
-Pearl could also work as a follower of Artemis though because of her disastrous double life relationship with Scott. Followers of Artemis swore off love and lived a life of chaste, which aligns well with Pearl having forgiven Scott after she won but never having the same relationship with him that she had in Last Life.
-Artemis herself also swore off love of any kind.. and guess who wasn’t there for Double life for a soul bound?
-Her only Allies in sl, besides the moon herself, were Scott and Impulse. Both of which could work as devout followers of Artemis because of their rejection of their own respective soulmates. Scott acknowledges his past lovers as his exes and never (to my knowledge) expresses wanting to get back with them. Impulse, too, never hesitated to attack the mounders even if they had Bdubs on their side. Impulse and Bdubs had a great relationship in Double Life but I like to think that, for this theory to work, they’ve just decided to keep that relationship in Dl.
-Besides the moon, Artemis is also a symbol of the hunt which is exactly what she did in sl sessions 7-8; hunt people down with the aid of the moon. Imagine moonlight illuminating her path as she stalks her prey….
Scars turn;
-Now, Apollo isn’t the god of the Sun (that would be Helios… or Grian in this case) but rather of sunlight, but the sun is still a huge symbol of him. Not to go all desert duo on you but the crumbs are there. Scar also covers himself in sunflowers in sl, a flower known to always be facing the sun, basking in its light. It’s worth mentioning that Scar was only close to winning when he and the Sun were inseparable in 3rd life, and he actually won when he was faced with the symbol of the moon and the moon herself.
-This is more silly but Apollo is highly connected with musical arts (specifically the lyre) and could you imagine if that scene where Grian and Scar were singing together wasn’t just Scar being oblivious but instead Apollo using any chance he can get to showcase his musical talent to the Sun?
-Apollo’s gift of Prophecy… Scar “we all die in the end” would be more prophetic if we all collectively gaslight ourselves into believing that he died after hitting succeed on his task. But in these death games, everyone knows by now how it ends. I think Scar acknowledging this is somehow foreshadowing how he wins though; by murdering everyone who stands in his way, not accepting sacrifices and turning on his temporary allies the second its clear that it would benefit him. When he said everyone would die he truly meant EVERYONE would die, and a majority will die to him or his twin (Artemis).
-Apollo and Artemis are both known for using Archery, but Scar is literally Hotguy come on now. His last kill was an arrow to Pearl that knocked her off of a cliff, an ARROW at the MOON. Scar is an incredibly skilled bow user and I would include this in Gem’s part too but I’m pretty sure she’s gotten more kills on sl by sword.
-Lastly, the Muses. Apollo, being the god of arts and music, was the choir leader of the 9 muses on Olympus. Now, Scar was never friends with more than 2 people at a time in the life series but lets look at his kills instead. In session 9 alone, he got 6 Permakills and 2 assists (Big B and Skizz) which brings us up to 8. Not enough but he lasted for 9 sessions, which is pretty cool if you interpret every session as a muse. Each session’s task being a huge influence on how Scar acts, even if he fails the task.
I think the 9 muses, Gem’s preferred weapon, and Apollo’s connection to medicine and Scar’s lack thereof are the weakest parts of this delusional rant but I still love the idea of the final battle in sl featuring the moon rejecting Artemis and a battle between the Twins. Apollo winning only after destroying the moon herself, who lost her will to win after the events of Dl. Apollo having once been allied with the Sun, and the Moon once having her win handed to her by her soulmate. Anyways Shinyduo Desertduo and Scar/Pearl narrative foils real and true.

blood moon – part three
read on ao3 | read part one | gemcyt/life series, 3.2k words
for this update, i scrapped an old scene that provided context but was otherwise very boring. if you're curious, there's a longer explanation available in my ao3 notes.
Bdubs woke up in the late morning to the sound of several people arguing in the next room. He recognized Grian and Cleo’s voices, so he got up to see what all the fuss was, only to run right into Pearl in the hallway.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” Pearl said in a low voice. “I was just…”
“Snooping around?” Bdubs attempted to deliver this line with an intimidating glare, but he only managed a yawn.
“What? No, of course not! I just wanted—I wanted to talk to you, actually.”
“Why’s that?”
“Grian said you were an expert on building. I had a few questions for you.”
“Really?” He brightened. “What else did he tell you about me?”
“He said if I had any questions about making a base, I should go to you first.”
“Well, he’s absolutely right. I know everything there is to know about building. I built this base we’re standing in now, you know. It’s called a crastle.”
“It’s lovely,” Pearl said. “Probably my favorite base! Don’t tell Grian, though.”
“Oh, you flatterer.” Bdubs waved her off modestly. “I do my best. So what were your questions?”
“Do you know what a chimney is?”
…A chimney. Right. Yes, he definitely knew what that was. “It’s the top part of a fireplace,” Bdubs said with perfect confidence.
“And what’s a fireplace?”
“Why, it’s the place you put fire, of course!”
Pearl looked baffled. “Why would you need a place to put fire?”
This stumped him for a few moments. Why would anyone have a place for fire in their home? “It’s a very complicated question,” Bdubs said. “I could explain it, but it would take all day, and I’m sure you’d find it very boring.”
“Right, of course.” A small smile appeared on Pearl’s face. “I wouldn’t want to take up all of your valuable time.”
“Is there anything else you want to know?”
“I guess I want to know why you’ve all started building bases for yourselves in the first place,” Pearl said. “They’re very lovely, but I don’t understand what they’re for, exactly.”
“Oh, of course! You’re a pearl, so you’ve probably never had a space just for yourself, right?”
Pearl blinked. “I guess not.”
“When me, Cleo, Tango, and Impulse first got here, we found lots of old ruins,” Bdubs explained. “That’s where we got all our books. Let me see, where is it…” He got up and looked through the nearby bookshelf. “Here it is! Man-Made Wonders of The World.”
He presented the book to Pearl with a giddy smile. Pearl took it, flipping through the first few pages with delicate hands. “What’s a man?”
“It’s short for human,” Bdubs said. He was very proud of having figured that one out on his own. “They’re a type of life-form that used to live here on this planet a long time ago. Cleo thinks they’re extinct, because otherwise we would have found one by now.”
“And they built all these? Without gem technology?” Pearl’s eyes widened. “Where are these structures? Have you seen them all?”
“Well, that’s the problem,” Bdubs sighed. “This planet’s really big, and none of us have a working ship anymore. If we had one, we might be able to explore, but it would be a long journey on foot, and Cleo doesn’t believe me when I tell her I can make sure we don’t get lost.”
“That’s a shame,” Pearl said, so quietly that Bdubs almost missed it.
“Wait a minute!” he said. “You must have had a ship to get here, right? Where is it?”
Pearl looked very much as if an agate had just walked in and caught her goofing off. “Well, you see—”
“Bdubs!” Cleo called from the other room. “What are you shouting about?”
“Coming!” Bdubs answered. “Don’t go anywhere,” he told Pearl, before poking his head into the other room.
He was greeted with the sight of two unfamiliar gems, a rose quartz and a peridot, the latter of whom seemed to be attempting to hide behind Grian. (It wasn’t working.) “These are Lizzie and Mumbo,” Cleo told Bdubs. “They came here with Pearl, apparently. Pearl was just here a second ago, but…”
“Oh, she was talking to me!” Bdubs said. “We were having a wonderful little conversation about bases.” He glanced back into the hallway, but Pearl had already disappeared. “Huh. She must have wandered off.”
“Seems to be a habit of hers.” Cleo didn’t look too happy. “You entertain our guests for a minute, and I’ll go make sure she’s not rifling around in our storage.”
“Sure thing!” Bdubs’ arms instinctively went to perform the diamond salute, but he knew Cleo hated when he did that, so he disguised the gesture by clapping his hands together. “So how did you guys all get here? Where’s your ship?”
“They claim there’s no ship,” Cleo said on their way out of the room. Her tone of voice clearly indicated that she didn’t believe them.
“It crashed,” Lizzie told him very solemnly. “Horribly. Went up in flames and everything. Big disaster.”
“Funny coincidence,” Bdubs said, “that’s exactly what happened to ours.”
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Pearl through the window, in the process of sneaking away. She met Bdubs’ gaze for a split second, and gave him a wink before vanishing from view.
Scott was out in the garden when Jimmy heard a visitor knocking at their door. Usually he waited for Scott to tell him what to expect, but it had been a while since they’d had any surprises, and besides, Scott rarely gave him a straight answer when it came to the future. So instead of waiting for him, Jimmy got up and opened the door by himself.
“Hi! You’re Jimmy, right?” Pearl stuck out her arm, and he took it, bewildered. “I just learned about handshakes from Bdubs. Did I do it right?”
“Probably,” Jimmy said with a shrug. “I wouldn’t know. What’s up?”
“You fuse a lot, right? I wanna talk about fusion.”
She must have seen Flower Agate at the party last night. “Yeah, sure. Come on in.” Jimmy stepped aside to allow Pearl to enter. She took a few steps, only to be stopped by the sudden appearance of a wall of ice between them.
“No,” Scott said evenly from where he stood at the back door, his arm outstretched. “Not happening.”
“Scott, what’s going on?” Jimmy backed away from Pearl, who looked just as confused as he felt. “Is something wrong?”
Scott ignored him. “I can’t tell what you’re planning,” he said to Pearl, “but it won’t work. You’re going to get yourself and a lot of other gems hurt.”
“What are you talking about?” Pearl asked. The ice only came up to her waist, but she didn’t try to step over it. “I don’t want to hurt anyone.” Her voice trembled on the words.
“Maybe not, but you will.”
“Is this about a future vision you saw?” Pearl said. “Just tell me what it was, that way I can—”
“I’m not taking that risk,” Scott said. “Just stay away from me and Jimmy.”
“Hey, wait a minute!” Jimmy interrupted. “Can’t we talk about this? I’d rather have nobody get hurt, if that’s an option.”
“You and I can talk about this,” Scott told him. “But you—” he turned his attention back to Pearl, “—need to leave.”
Before Pearl could respond, Scott pushed the ice wall further forward, forcing her out the door. It slammed shut, and he hurried over to lock it.
“What has gotten into you?” Jimmy asked him. “Wouldn’t it have been a better idea to talk it out with her? What harm can one pearl do?”
“You really have to ask that question? You’ve met Joel.”
He couldn’t argue with that—Joel had caused a lot of trouble when he’d first arrived. But for the brief time they’d spoken, Pearl had been perfectly pleasant. “Can you at least tell me what’s going to happen?”
“I can’t,” Scott said.
Jimmy rolled his eyes. “Yes, you can.”
“No, I can’t. There are too many possibilities right now. We’ll have to wait it out and see how things end up.”
Jimmy loved Scott, he really did, but sometimes he made Jimmy want to tear his hair out. “Then what’s the use of future vision if we still don’t know what to do?”
Scott didn’t answer him. Jimmy looked down to see a small ring of ice encircling the hem of his skirt.
“Sorry, sorry,” he said hastily, reaching to pry Scott free of the ice. He set him down on the couch. “Forget I said that. How about tonight? Can you see what happens tonight?”
“We go to the party,” Scott said slowly. “We fuse again. It’s—I think there’s a new fusion? It’s hard to see as Flower Agate.”
“So that’s good, right?” Jimmy asked. “We’re safe.”
“I think so.”
“We’re safe,” Jimmy repeated, with more confidence this time. “We’ll be fine.”
He hoped Scott believed him. He wasn’t sure he believed himself.
Mumbo was at a party with a bunch of rebel gems, and people were fusing.
At least, that’s what he thought they were doing. Pearl had warned him this would happen, but it was one thing to hear about it and quite another to see it for himself. Right now, the sapphire and the lapis lazuli were involved in a dance that made Mumbo want to politely avert his eyes—yet at the same time, he couldn’t look away.
“This is…a lot,” he said.
“Yeah,” Pearl agreed. “Are you freaking out? It’s okay if you’re freaking out. We can go back to the ship.”
“No, it’s alright!” Mumbo couldn’t imagine going back to the ship and letting this happen without him. “We can stay.”
The sapphire and lapis finally fused, and he got to watch in real time as their forms merged into one. It was slow and confusing and oddly beautiful. He let out a gasp when the ball of light finally solidified into a single figure, which stood taller than most of the other nearby gems.
“I’m trying to be supportive of Gri,” Pearl said. “I know he likes this. When he fused yesterday, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him look so…”
“Happy?” Mumbo guessed, searching for Grian in the crowd. He found him talking to a blue gem, with Scar somewhere off in the distance. Maybe Grian didn’t always fuse with Scar, then. Maybe he liked to branch out. “He seems really at home here.”
He’d officially reunited with Grian that morning, which had been wonderful, but…strange. Tense. Mumbo had been expecting everything to promptly return to normal once they found Gri, but it was becoming more and more obvious that that would not be the case. Even worse, Pearl seemed to be in denial about it, and Mumbo had been taking cues from her for long enough that he had no idea what to do.
His attention was pulled to the nephrite and green jasper he’d met earlier, who were—well, if the previous fusion dance had made Mumbo want to look away, this one made him want to bury his head in the ground. Still, he watched. He’d never seen anything even remotely like it. He couldn’t imagine himself ever making moves like that, but perhaps he could manage a twirl or two. Would he have to take off his limb enhancers?
“I don’t know what else to do,” Pearl said.  “Do you think if I fused with him, it would convince him to choose us instead of them?”
“Huh?” The second fusion dance had reached its culmination, but a third and a fourth had started up. Mumbo managed to tear his eyes away for a moment to look at Pearl. She had taken on an odd in-between color, which corresponded with the sun’s current position most of the way below the horizon. “Beg your pardon, did you say you were thinking of fusing with Grian?”
“I might as well try.” Pearl got to her feet. “I’ll just go ask him. No big deal, right?”
Mumbo was fairly certain that Pearl and Grian fusing would be a recipe for disaster, but he doubted Pearl would listen to him. “He’s been talking to that blue gem for quite a while now. You might be interrupting something.”
“I don’t care.” Pearl was fully red now. “We’re losing him. He’s in love with this planet. If we don’t offer him something better, he’s going to realize he prefers it to us.”
“Surely there’s a better way than—”
Pearl had already begun walking away before he could finish. Mumbo didn’t follow her. He’d seen enough of Pearl in her red state to know there wasn’t anything he could do except watch the disaster unfold in front of him.
“Boys,” a very sarcastic voice said behind him.
Mumbo looked up to see Rose Quartz—no, Lizzie—taking a seat in the grass beside him. “What’s a boy?” he asked.
“Not sure!” Lizzie said. “I heard Cleo say it earlier, just like that. I think it’s an insult.”
“Boys,” Mumbo repeated, trying to mimic her derision. He watched Pearl storm up to Grian and grab his arm, pulling him away from the blue quartz. “I really don’t understand pearls.”
“Me neither,” Lizzie said, with a little huff of exasperation. “Want a flower? I’ve been picking off the petals for fun.” She passed Mumbo a small white blossom with long petals, the stem severed halfway down.
Mumbo methodically plucked every third petal as he watched Pearl and Grian’s conversation from afar. He didn’t dare approach them, but he couldn’t help but wonder what they were saying.
“What are you even saying?” Grian said, throwing up his hands. “Have you gone mad?”
“Am I not good enough to fuse with?” Pearl asked. “You’ll fuse with spinels and quartzes but not me?”
“Pearl, I’m not—” Grian cast a glance at BigB, who was trying to mind his own business. It was proving to be a very difficult task. “I haven’t even fused with any quartzes yet, I’ll have you know. And besides, it’s not about what type of gem you are.”
“So why not? Spit it out.”
“I don’t think this is a good time.” Grian looked wary, but his mind was clearly made up. “Not while you’re still red.”
“That’s it, then?” Pearl threw up her hands. “You won’t fuse with me because I’m off-color?”
BigB winced at that one. “Woah, okay, I don’t think that’s—”
“Don’t you start,” Pearl snapped. “I’m talking to Grian right now.”
“Actually, I was talking to him first,” Grian said, before BigB could figure out a polite way to exit the conversation. “I know you’re still adjusting to living here, Pearl, but BigB didn’t do anything wrong.”
Pearl gave him a look of pure fury, then turned the same gaze on BigB, who immediately put up his hands in surrender. “Fine,” she said. “I get it. You’d rather hang out with your new friends.”
“Pearl, I don’t—”
“Whatever, Gri,” she said coldly, and turned on her heel, walking away into the dark.
Grian sighed. “I’m sorry you had to see that,” he told BigB.
“Did you know her from somewhere?” BigB asked him. “That really didn’t seem like a conversation between two gems that met yesterday.”
“I guess there’s no point in keeping it a secret if she wants to have loud arguments in front of people,” Grian said. “Yeah, I know her. At least, I thought I did.”
“That bad, huh?”
Grian shrugged. “Something’s going on with her, but I have no idea what it is.”
“You think it has anything to do with the whole color-changing thing?”
“I don’t know. I’ve never seen her do that before.” Grian stared off into the woods where Pearl had just disappeared. “I’ve never seen any gem do that before.”
“Me neither,” BigB said. “I bet if anyone knows, it’s Ren. He’s seen a lot of weird stuff.”
“You think he’d know something?” Grian looked even more worried at the prospect. “I’m not sure if I should bother him with this.”
“I can ask him,” BigB volunteered. “I don’t mind.”
He looked around at the rest of the party, finding Ren lounging in the grass by himself. He was surprised Ren and Martyn hadn’t formed Red Diamond yet, considering all the other fusions that were going on, but he wasn’t about to question it. “Hey, Ren! Can I ask you something?”
“What’s up, dude?” Ren waved him over. “Is something wrong?”
“Not with me,” BigB said. “I just wanted to ask, have you ever seen a gem change color?”
“Hmm.” Ren took a moment to think. “I can’t say I have. Not permanently, at least.”
“What about temporarily?”
“Well, that’s a different story. I’ve seen it happen a few times.”
“You have? Really?”
“Sure, have, m’dude. It’s pretty funky.” Ren sat up straight, immediately towering over BigB. “Happens sometimes on planets with different types of suns. Most gems look about the same, but sometimes a gem will go a bit—well, I don’t want to say off-color, but—”
“So it’s just a trick of the light?” BigB asked.
“Sometimes,” Ren said. “Sometimes nothing else happens, but—haven’t seen it myself, mind you, but I’ve heard certain gems will start to go a little off the rails, if you know what I mean.”
BigB laughed. “Like we all did when we got here?”
“Hey! Not all of us!”
“You’re right,” BigB said. “It was mostly you and Martyn.”
Ren sighed. “I suppose you’re not wrong. Why were you asking about color-changing gems, anyway?”
“You’ve met the new gems, haven’t you?”
“Seen ‘em, yes. Not really had a chat with any of them yet. I was planning on introducing myself, but I was worried I might intimidate them with my size.”
“You could always shrink down,” BigB suggested. “But yeah, Grian and I just talked to Pearl, and she was kind of…the wrong color? Last I saw her she was close to the same color as Grian, but this time she was red. Is that normal?”
“She was red, you say?” Ren looked alarmed. “Are you sure?”
“Pretty sure. Saw it with my own eyes. Grian said it happened last night, too.”
“That’s…not good,” Ren said. “Where is she now?”
“She got upset and ran off.” BigB pointed in the direction he’d seen Pearl disappear. Ren’s frown only deepened.
“We should probably go make sure she’s okay.” He got to his feet, then looked down at BigB and hesitated. “Maybe I’ll take your advice on that shrinking thing. Wouldn’t want to scare her.”
BigB watched as Ren shrank down to match his height. Amusingly, Ren’s gem stayed the same size, making it look huge on his chest. It was odd to be able to look Ren in the eye, but BigB found he quite liked it.
“Alright, you lead the way,” Ren told him.
“Just you and me?” BigB asked. “We’re not getting anyone else?”
“We don’t need a whole group for one pearl,” Ren said. “She’s not hostile, is she?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Then I’m sure we’ll be fine!” Ren flashed him a grin. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

while I sob my heart out here, take the ideas for a Hilda inspired au (just the Hilda world as a setting) for life series people!
[SEASON 3 SPOILERS BEWARE]
Evo gang (Matryn, Pearl, Jimmy, Big B, and Grian) all got trapped in the fairy isles but while most where able to get out and then forget grian was trapped for longer and remembered
Bdubs being an elf is endlessly funny to me but maybe part of the lost clan because idk about the paperwork aspect, that if he could be a Vittra
on that thought, Mumbo is a human. He has the same eyes as david
Pearl would have a deer fox- or you know that really big puppy that nissa kept
Cleo would be a marra…. Idk man there are only ghosts rather than undead but I guess the Draugen would work better
Gem would be a witch who escaped the void of no return
joel- would be a nissa maybe, but the very pesky kind
this guy is an enigma, etho maybe the Lindworm type creature? They both suffer from social anxiety lol
jimmy would somehow be linked to the great raven, I love them both dearly
skizz I think would be a member of the lost clan
tango plays the mad scientist role I think someone like Victoria van…. What’s her name would be amazing. He can be unhinged as a treat
Lizzie is a fairy, is that even a question?
ren also a member of the Draugen I think him and Cleo would get along swell
scott, I think he’d be a witch and use a lot of tide mice, or an escaped fairy from the isle maybe
impulse, tango, martyn, mumbo, and grian are all fully human
big b and pearl are part fairy and human.
(I was so so close to making Pearl a nissa)

Oh this task is going to be so hard for etho. We have seen his acting and it’s not much. This series is truly Etho’s Weird and Quirky era. Bdubs and Etho being Old at each other. HOW IS JIMMY YELLOW! WHY. Dude that hard task reroll is actually easier lol. REVENGE ON SCAR!! “What are you going to do, stab me?” Gem noooo.
ETHO WON HEART LOTTERY?!? Of course he did. Blatant favoritism right here. HOW DID BEANS MISS THE WATER??? Is the green horse a texture pack or a special mob?? What’s going on? Oof that’s a rough task Grian. Etho that’s so evil. Pearl’s going to kill you if she ever figures it out.
Everyone knows pearls task kinda and they’re just stopping her from doing it LOL. straight up taunting her. I think etho has given himself away. Oh that’s such a sly cut. He gave the gapple in his hot bar to Mumbo for info. Wait I didn’t catch what tango said. Yellow?
THAT THUNDER AS GRIAN PRONOUNCES HIS JUDGEMENT!! And bigb and Lizzie shamelessly taking advantage of his situation.
ETHO LITERALLY A MEME AS HE REPLIES A CONFUSED THANK YOU TO A LOVE CONFESSION FROM GRIAN AHAHAH. the brutal rejection from beans. Wait so grian i guess is not allowed to fail others since he’s the rulebook. And didn’t etho cause tango to fail? Huh.
IMPULSE WITH THE JUMP LINE HAHAA. huh im surprised Martyn didn’t guess it. I guess he fails on a technicality. I would have passed him given the looseness of the previous sessions. Washed up with the water buckets lol.
Huh I guess greens don’t have to confirm the guesses even if they’re right. Unless a yellow is making it. I suppose that is the definition of a secret.
Wait that’s not a fair task for gem??? It’s not even true and it’s kinda boring to railroad people into doing hard tasks. Oooh I thought she glassed four. Huh. Oh that makes sense as a punishment for false successes. Oh that’s honestly pretty lucky for her. It’s early into the series, they were planning to raid the nether anyways. I can’t believe they didn’t trade for fire res first or wear pumpkin heads rip. Rip. ITS AN 11 EYE??? RIGGED. DEFINITELY ON PURPOSE. Oh she didn’t do the secret rooms lol. Ong she should definitely speedrun to the secret keeper before someone guesses her. It was so obvious.
JOEL AND HIS POUNDERS AND GOING DOWN LOL. she can pretend to sacrifice the items to a fire lol. But yeah just obfuscating with various items should work. lol she’s done with victory.
