Wahoo!! Happy (almost) New Year, and happy retrospective listmaking season!! I had an insane year for movies (308 this year, and 297 new to me), and a ton of trouble narrowing them down to 90 new favorites, much less nine, so I'm giving myself a cheater's runners-up list below the cut -- all of which might as well be on my top 9, too. Links go to letterboxd:
Blow-Up (1966), dir. Michelangelo Antonioni
Pickpocket (1959), dir. Robert Bresson
Tokyo Drifter (1966), dir. Seijun Suzuki
Horse Feathers (1932), dir. Norman Z. McLeod
Blue (1993), dir. Derek Jarman
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), dir. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger
A Woman is a Woman (1961), dir. Jean-Luc Godard
Daisies (1966), Věra Chytilová
Grand Illusion (1937), dir. Jean Renoir
As for runners-up: most any of these could have ended up in my top 9. They're all amazing, or had a strong impact on me, or were affecting or fascinating in some way -- and I'm still leaving off an unbelievable number. Anyway, here they are, in no order:
Taste of Cherry (1997), dir. Abbas Kiarostami
Opening Night (1977), dir. John Cassavetes
The Crowd (1928), dir. King Vidor
Dragon Inn (1967), dir. King Hu
Long Day’s Journey Into Night (2018), Bi Gan
The Third Man (1949), dir. Carol Reed
Le Samouraï (1967), dir. Jean-Pierre Melville
Xala (1975), dir. Ousmane Sembène
The Exiles (1961), dir. Kent MacKenzie
Cure (1997), dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa
American Dreams (Lost and Found) (1984), dir. James Benning
Sholay (1975), dir. Ramesh Sippy
To Be or Not to Be (1942), dir. Ernst Lubitsch
A Face in the Crowd (1957), dir. Elia Kazan
Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975), dir. Chantal Akerman
Pather Panchali (1955), dir. Satyajit Ray
Closely Watched Trains (1966), dir. Jiří Menzel
The Double Life of Véronique (1991), dir. Krzysztof Kieślowski
High Anxiety (1977), dir. Mel Brooks
Two-way tie for A Matter of Life and Death (1946), dir. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and Peeping Tom (1960), dir. Michael Powell
(also -- sorry to tag so many people and a few that I don't know very well (yet!), but I love learning what people are watching and getting recommendations u are all passionate about -- please feel free to share ur top 9 new-to-you of the year (or more or less) and tag some friends if you'd like, but no pressure if you'd rather not!! @hawkesque @pomegranate @partlyironic @efort @machihunnicutt @honey--wraith @fieryphrazes @captainhunnicutt @persianflaw @writedrunk @andloawhatsit @columbosunday @theberryboy @draftdodgerag @writtenbyalanalda @loopnoid @local-human-disaster @ezrasimp @localpubliclibrary @radioprune @romeythehomie @allulily @bruce-greenwood @slightlychilledbeans @discocaptain @gaysails @jbhoneydew @hyperbo-lee @hearteyespierce @kaviiinsky @kejfeblintz @macbethheadband @theblob1958 @veganthranduil @windmillcrusader @always-a-mad-comet @guckygarnes @asmallcoat and anyone else who sees this and wants to play--if I missed tagging u it was surely an accident!!! or I got intimidated .)

The rest of the days are being filled by community features. We’ll be posting a cover a day throughout November, so make sure to check them out!)
Code 51
Jacqueline Kolby wants to get through her senior year in high school to get on with better things. She doesn't want attention in or out of class from anyone. Jac, as her friends call her, ignores headlines and surely doesn't want to be one. However, when an arsonist seems to target her family, staying in the background isn't possible anymore. Jac's dad gets burned in a barn fire after several of their corn fields are razed. Now she's had enough. The police and fire marshal don't have any suspects. Her mom is busy caring for her dad while her grandpa mourns the recent loss of her grandma. Jac and her two friends set out to solve the mystery before anyone else gets injured. Who would want to hurt her family? Why now?
About the Author
Jill resides in Southern Indiana with her husband of forty-five years. They enjoy their country lifestyle and visiting with their children and grandchildren. Her life centers around her family and her yellow lab, Indy. She is an avid movie watcher and loves Mexican food and watercolor painting.
She has published a middle-grade mystery series titled The Bomb Squad. Code 51 will be her first venture into young adult mystery/suspense books.
Jill’s interest in books began in childhood when reading provided a wonderful outlet for her wild imagination. She loves to tell stories about her life experiences with humor mixed in to convey the sense of adventure she feels daily. Jill says her life is like a good plate of nachos, a tiny kick of spice, and a whole lotta cheese.

About the Designer
Cookie Redding is an artist, designer and lecturer with the School of Visual Arts at the Pennsylvania State University and teaches courses in the Digital Art and DMD Programs. Her work encompasses the art and design world, with a focus on multiple media forms of expression.
Redding's influences are from a diverse array of disciplines spawning from the classics and antiquities, to history and tech. Her explorations integrate these elements into a study of symbols. The imagery she deals with within her work is a study from the beauty of words and by being within nature. Her explorations show how the literary world meets the natural work with color and texture. Check her out on Instagram and Facebook!
Cover Design Process:
This year. we gave designers the optional prompt to explain their design process for the cover! Here's Cookie's:
My process typically starts with some sketching, brainstorming and listmaking. Then I start to hone my composition concept while also searching for imagery that would be ideal for the cover. I went through around 8 iterations and then my concept adjusted a bit to include the grid--that's when everything fell into place! Thanks so much for letting me be a part of 30 Covers 30 Days again--it's the highlight of my design year!

hey, bff! I'm tryna get into horror movies and I was wondering if you know any without a lot of gore. I don't handle it very well but I would still like to try and expand my taste. Preferably stuff with a nicole dollanagnger esque style, if u can't think of anything that specific thats cool too, tysm ꒰ᐢ. .ᐢ꒱₊˚⊹ ᰔ
omg I'm so glad you asked this question!! I've been watching horror since I was 14 and have seen many good (and bad) films over the years and I am an avid listmaker so I've got some gems for you!
☆ if u wanna avoid specific triggers I would HIGHLY recommend the website: doesthedogdie.com it tells you if a movie contains anything from needles to animal death, whatever you don't wanna see, it will tell you which movies to avoid! ☆
~ Spider Baby (1967) spooky vibes, a gothic black and white horror about two creepy sisters. this one definitely has a nicole vibe, and I don't remember it being too disturbing (also u don't see much bc it's b+w)
~ Flowers in the Attic (1987 and 2014) not particularly horror but a very spooky vibe, and of course Nicole got her stage name from this story! a gothic setting, family secrets and a horrifying conclusion, perfect autumnal watch (but be warned)
~ Carrie (1976) apart from one particularly bloody scene, the gore in this movie is minimal and not from wounds caused on screen, what happens when a bullied young girl with telekinesis is pushed to her limit? it's a classic for a reason and one of my faves, plus her prom look is gorgeous ♡ ~ ♡
~ Whispering Corridors: Memento Mori (1999) this movie is a classic Korean ghost story, and one of the first films in South Korean cinema to feature a kiss between two girls. the relationship between these two girls is complicated, but it has a true message of bullying in school and homophobia
~ House of Voices/Saint Ange (2004) creepy girls boarding school, and the two lead actresses are so pretty and I've posted screencaps of it before. ghost story with gorgeous visuals and Nicole would probs love this movie
~ Black Swan (2010) obsession, perfection, beauty, girl becomes woman (and it's terrifying). I LOVE this movie, there's a few body horror scenes however the psychological is what makes it an amazing film!! Classic, I could rewatch it forever and Nina's outfits are to DIE FOR. balletcore slay
~ Look Away (2018) and My Sweet Audrina (2016) both starring the lovely India Eisley and have a gloomy atmosphere and not very gory at all. both are some of my fave movies, look away is all about beauty and a shy girl becomes popular after discovering her darker side in her reflection. and my sweet audrina is about a girl who can't leave her gothic house after her sister (with the same name as her) died tragically in the woods.
I hope this list was somewhat helpful! I'm sorry if any of these are too much horror wise (I may have forgotten specifics as some of these I watched YEARS ago) but happy viewing!! ♡ I hope you find one that you like
xoxo

I usually look the the ship/pairing I like and make sure there are no major nopes in its tags (like Major Character Death, or unhappy endings), then Iook at the rating and the summaries. I tend to like medium to long fics, so there is that. I’ve been reading a smaller fandom than my primary, and starting to read stories I’m not sure of has lead me to some real gems. Get to know your authors, take a good look at the tags, and maybe check the comments (though there are probably some spoilers there). Statistics on AO3 can be impressive, but they do not always tell the whole story. Think of it as a treasure hunt! Make sure to comment on the stories you like, no matter how old they are, and if you like to reread stories, bookmark your faves - but be mindful of your notes - unless you chose to make your bookmarks private, anyone can read them, including the author, and here in the johnlock fandom, we love and respect our authors and our illustrators, artists, listmakers, and fans, very much. Read, have fun and be supportive! 😉
Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

oh another honorable mention is Tri-Be Doom Doom Ta actually. i like it a lot, and maybe i should include it on the list if that’s the case, but tbh i feel like Rub-a-Dum has kind of replaced it for me. like, in terms of a list like that, i mean. i feel like including Doom Doom Ta would be a bit redundant, because i feel like Rub-a-Dum covers everything i like about Doom Doom Ta, but yeah, improves on it.
that’s not always the case with groups that put out multiple good songs per year, but sometimes it is. like last year, i had two Dreamcatcher songs and two GFriend songs on my top 10, because i felt like Scream and Boca were different enough that it was justified, and i felt like Mago and Crossroads were soooo different that it wasn’t an issue at all, haha. I think that could happen this year again too. like, i feel like if STAYC puts out something that i like more than ASAP, but it’s also very different from ASAP (maybe more in the style of So Bad or something), then it wouldn’t knock ASAP off my list, it would just lower it. however, if they put out something that is like ASAP but better, then it would probably just replace it, because it’d be kinda redundant to have both. if that makes sense
#like if dreamcatcher put out something in their dystopia-trilogy-style that i like more than odd eye... it might just replace odd eye#on my list. i'll still listen to and love both of course... but in terms of listmaking... i want as much diversity as possible#if they put out something thats better than odd eye but also very distinct from odd eye then it wont knock odd eye off of the list#alternatively if they put out something similar to odd eye that isnt as good then i might just not really even consider it#and just keep odd eye where it is (and include a mention of the subsequent song in my review of odd eye)#or if they release a song that is very distinct from odd eye but not as good then it could still make the list... just lower than odd eye#does that all make sense?#anyway yeah i felt like i didnt really need to include doom doom ta because rubadum exists#if i did include it then it'd probably be around 8th 9th or 10th place#i feel like rubadum is the perfect First Comeback#and doom doom ta was the perfect Debut#their debut set up what their sound will be like... and the first comeback expanded it#and built off of the debut's groundwork

You!!! Never trusting you to write a year by year canon rewrite :D
in all four cases, I've already got the ending written and polished, although in two cases the actual last line still isn't quite right. The sign-off flourish, as it were.
Whoa!!! I didn't know this! That's insane! I actually thought Year of the Thestral is plotted out in detail. Also The Afterlight because it's got this really complicated plot from the beginning.
I feel like so far in my listmaking I didn't really see longfics on the plotter side except a couple of obvious ones :D Probably it's just my reading having a seriously narrow range. I love getting swept up in the feels and not really knowing the exact how/where it's headed really gets me in the mood as long as intense characters and scorching chemistry are happening. I just love the Hydra fics. Like you are not expecting a new subplot or a new undercurrent. You know normally this is when things start getting closure/resolution but some new totally unexpected door opens instead!
I do usually know about certain scenes in advance - those irradiated, miraculous nuggets of inspiration that make a story start burning and growing in my head.
Of course you dont have to answer this. But I am really really curious if they are visuals. Like do you see these scenes playing out like videos in your imagination? Also sounds/scents? Just extra curious because your fics have a lot of sensory details which are not just described but also felt. It's super unique. I haven't actually read that vibe in anything else.
Eldritcher doesn't plot their fic but they start with a music composition so not really freeform pantsing. Their longfics have 5K feels and vibes chapters going in whatever direction except for the last chapter which is in the range of 40K with the actual plot + resolution. I don't know how it works but it usually works for them.
I am discovering a new appreciation for pantser fics. It's just unreal how beautiful they are. Like how does this even work. Because it works. It's like suddenly magically producing a rainbow or something. Like you know there is some science process behind a rainbow. But it just appears after a storm and it's beautiful. You love it and you don't understand it got made. Because it just looks impossible.
Most of my fav longfic authors are pantsers not plotters :D Starting to realize when I am creating recs for the hprecfest. These fics are Feel and Vibe fics. Where are we going? Some idea about ending but nobody knows the actual route. Maybe the next chapter knows. But we are going to get there. Meanwhile we can feel with the characters and have fun. We dont have a plan but we definitely have a feeling :D

Holy Grail Fics || Yandere
My favorite authors and recommended stories, broadly separated into categories for when you want to scratch a particular itch.
Masterlist of Lists | One Shots and Series (Mostly Plot) | Smut | Yandere
Listmaker's Note: Yandere is a broad category in which someone starts out sweet and kind, but becomes obsessive and destructive – driven by their love for someone else. Sometimes yandere characters only pretend to be kind in the beginning, and sometimes they start out obsessive with no grace period at all. In any case, there's just something delightfully unsettling about yandere stories once you approach the turning point and realize with dread that all of your initial assumptions were wrong, and you've gotten yourself in way over your head.
P. S. Given the genre, violence (physical and mental) are often present in these stories. Please read the authors' warnings carefully and do not read anything that you have hesitations about, as some stories get very dark and unlike most fan fics, many will not have happy endings.
@bang-tan-bitches [masterlist]
Beloved (MYG) | M | historical au, Daechwita au, wedding, noble woman reader, Emperor YG, politics, ☠️
"Court was just a game of politics after all. And you intended to win."

Bex has imagined up a wonderfully twisted mafia au with Namjoon at the helm and the other members following closely behind. I recommend reading the A Dangerous Game series and it's sequel series, When the Chips Are Down first, then the oneshot fics for all the other members.

The first time you meet Namjoon is when he has you kidnapped in the middle of the night. He knows that you singlehandedly toppled a criminal empire on the other side of the world... but now you're on his turf and playing a very different game.
When the Chips Are Down Series (KNJ ft. OT7, Got7) | M | ongoing, mafia au, see warnings above
This series is a sequel to the A Dangerous Game series above – no further description because I don't want to accidentally give away spoilers!

A series of connected one shots, each featuring a member and their wife.
The only thing worse than dealing with your cold, demanding husband is knowing that he has equally twisted friends.
Bonus: Tales from the Depths
I don't generally consider myself squeamish, but some stories are so dark and twisted, or feel so real, that I could only read through them once – before setting my phone down and thoroughly reassessing my life. You've been warned.

professional vibe diagnosis: bee @brownpaperhag 💛
KEY TERMS: matriarchs, prophetesses, sorceresses, wise women, afrofuturism, polish vintage, textile design, embroidery, handiwork, architecture, material objects, physicality, the sense of touch, the joys of listmaking, taxonomy, morphology, cataloguing, speculative fiction, short stories.
media recommendations under the cut!
— when it comes to speculative short stories, Small Beer Press is where it’s at, and Kelly Link, its founder, is one of my favourite authors, ever. i’d recommend starting with Pretty Monsters! or this particular tale (about Eastern European diaspora, by the by). — Sofia Samatar’s Tender is another splendid collection, and this is probably my favourite story of hers. — also, if you don’t feel like committing to a single author, there’s always some great anthologies; i’d especially recommend The New Voices of Fantasy (edited by Peter Beagle, the author of The Last Unicorn!), anything edited by the VanderMeers, and Fantastic Women: 18 Tales of the Surreal and the Sublime. — (re: afrofuturism) while it’s still on my tbr list, one of my closest friends (whose taste is impeccable, and who is responsible for recommending me some of my now-favourite books) swears by Nnedi Okorafor's Binti novels, and i trust her with my life. also, Rosewater by Tade Thompson! i still need to read the other books in the series, ah. — (re: elderly female protagonists) Angela Carter’s Wise Children, Baba Yaga Laid an Egg by Dubravka Ugrešić, The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington, Olga Tokarczuk’s Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (!), Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner, anything by Maggie Atwood, honestly. — Anna Swir! there are very few writers who have managed to capture the joys and woes of womanhood (in its various stages) as well as she did. i wanted to link her poems in their original polish, but? they’re not available online? there’s plenty of quality english translations, though! (x) (x) (x) (x) also, this article <3 (In Świrszczyńska’s poetry, the woman gives birth not only to children but also to the world. She appears in many different roles which are very often expressed in the first person: mother, daughter, loving, desiring, tender and grieving, crying after the deceased, taking care of the wounded, wild but very practical...) — this poem by Wisława Szymborska! (here in polish) — for some reason, your blog really reminds me of the latter part of Twig’s home with you music video... it inspired the moodboard, actually! — White is for Witching, Helen Oyeyemi (but also her short stories!) (also, this article on her <3), — The Broken Earth Trilogy by N. K. Jemisin (it won three Hugos!), — anything written by Olga Tokarczuk! i already mentioned Drive Your Plow..., but her entire bibliography is simply bewitching. — Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino (imaginary cityscapes! poetic architecture!), — The Infinity of Lists by Umberto Eco (a personal fave, although it’s rather difficult to acquire), — Lists of Note (to be perfectly honest, it’s more of a coffee table book than anything of substance, but it’s entertaining nonetheless) — List Cultures: Knowledge and Poetics from Mesopotamia to BuzzFeed, — A Place for Everything: The Curious History of Alphabetical Order, — The Golden Thread: How Fabric Changed History, — The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World, — The Subversive Stitch: Embroidery and the Making of the Feminine, — Threads of Life: A History of the World Through the Eye of a Needle, — The Beauty of Everyday Things, — Fewer, Better Things: The Hidden Wisdom of Objects, — The Secret Lives of Color, — The Poetics of Space (the fact that Mark Danielewski—of House of Leaves fame—wrote a foreword for this edition... yeah), — Architecture and Violence (re: your pinned post!) — some of my absolute favourite books about architecture and design were originally written in polish (and never translated into english, alas), and i can’t help but include at least some of them (plus, they’re a much more enjoyable way of keeping up with the language than duolingo and its hematologia): Miejski grunt. 250 lat polskiej gry z nowoczesnością, Wyroby. Pomysłowość wokół nas, Wanna z kolumnadą, Duchologia polska. Rzeczy i ludzie w latach transformacji, Ukryty modernizm. Warszawa według Christiana Kereza, Miasto Archipelag. Polska mniejszych miast, Źle urodzone. Reportaże o architekturze PRL-u. — speaking of polishness! i think you’d really enjoy sung poetry. here are some of my faves (my taste in music is that of a typical babcia): (x) (x) (x) (x) (x) (x) (x) (x)

saw a list of “proship hs fans” circulating here on tumblr-
(not circulating very far, judging by the # of notes, and the fact that all the reblogs ive seen so far are from people on the list, which is heartening)
-and i was honestly kind of surprised to see how short it was. in my experience on this here tumblr sideblog since 2016, only a small and irritating minority of hs fans are preoccupied with policing other people’s fannish interests- the vast majority are proship by default, in that they don’t care what other fans are into except where it intersects with what they themselves enjoy. one might reasonably expect a list of proship fans to run to several hundred names, even if you only included those currently active in hs fandom on tumblr. heck, even this little blog has a few hundred followers.
it seems likely that the listmaker was using “proship” to mean “likes ships i object to” instead of “doesn’t mind if other people like ships i object to,” which would be more accurate from a words-mean-things perspective, and also a much more difficult list to compile. i find the idea of such a list kind of amusing, though- imagine how desolate your dash would be if you blocked hundreds upon hundreds of blogs for the egregious crime of staying in their own lane. might be a wakeup call to some.
for the record, in case any of my followers somehow missed it: one of my favorite things about the homestuck fandom is the incredible imagination and creativity and passion with which fans have explored a truly vast array of conceivable relationships among a huge and complex cast of characters. i love quadrant shenanigans and canon divergence and what-ifs, i love fics that expand on the possibilities of a brief scene or a single line or an interest shared by characters who never met, i love dream bubbles and alternate timelines and combined universes. i love rarepairs and polyships and selfcest and i don’t care if a ship is “problematic,” what matters to me is whether it’s interesting.
#ship and let ship#i dont like engaging in discourse#its exhausting#but every so often i feel the need to make my position clear
