You like Pokemon and 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo. Do you have any particular Pokemon in mind that Vincent, FlimFlam, Shaggy, and Daphne would own?
Ooh, yes, I do! Get ready for the incoming ramblings--
So, the first step in all of this is determining which Pokémon Scooby and Scrappy would be in a Pokémon AU. This is not easy since, as of Gen 8, though there are plenty of dog Pokémon, none of them are based off of Great Danes, with the possible exception of Suicune (and someone on DeviantArt agrees with me), but as much as I love the idea (and that fanart), our boys Scooby and Scrappy wouldn't be legendaries (that, and there's no puppy form of Suicune for Scrappy to be). There's that post going around pointing out how Scooby (and Scrappy, by extension) are not up to breed standard (which was discussed in an early Where Are You ep re: Scooby trying to impersonate a show Dane and getting scoffed at for it), so as awesome an idea as Suicune!Scooby would be, I don't see it happening.
That being said, the automatic Big Dog of the Pokémon universe that comes to my mind to represent Scooby is Arcanine. I've also seen Boltund and Lucario as Pokémon AU versions of Scooby, and while I can see it, Shaggy holding a great big Arcanine in his arms is the closest thing to the real deal, imo.
One would think this makes Scrappy a Growlithe by default, and while I can see that, Riolu honestly fits Scrappy a lot better.
With Flim-Flam being under 10 years old (I assume; he seems about 8 or 9); he can't really have Pokémon yet, but rules have never really stopped him before, so until he is 10, Riolu!Scrappy is unofficially his Pokémon. Once he's old enough, he probably catches a few Pokémon native to the Pokémon equivalent of the Himalayas--Snorunt, Sneasel, and Snover.
Shaggy would've had Arcanine!Scooby since he was 10 (possibly earlier, unofficially), and I'm wracking my brains trying to think of any other Pokémon he might want to catch, and I'm coming up empty, not because I can't find any others that suit him, but because he and Scooby have such a bond that I can't really see him wanting to catch any other Pokémon--Shaggy doesn't seem like the type. He'd be one of those NPCs with just one Pokémon who doesn't really want to battle anyway.
Daphne, on the other hand, would be really into raising multiple Pokémon, and her first Pokémon would've absolutely been a Pikachu. Daphne is exactly the kind of girl who would've begged her parents for an adorable Pikachu for her 10th birthday and would've gotten one. However, she steps up and takes responsibility in a way that no one would've expected of her (to go along with how she seems to be a stereotypical rich girl on the surface but is, in fact, a deeper character than that) and raises it all the way to Raichu. The rest of Daphne's Pokémon are also ones that are stereotypically cute/beautiful, but she's ended up raising them well, too--Gardevoir (can Mega), Sylveon, Lapras (shiny--because Daphne would be the one to have a shiny Pokémon), and Roserade.
As for Vincent, there are already 2 Pokémon I strongly associate with him: one is Alakazam (I even named my 93% shiny Alakazam in Pokémon Go after him) and the other is Absol (which fits his Dark Is Not Evil motif excellently), so those two have to be on his team (and can Mega, naturally).  I also see him with a G-max Corviknight (as a nod to The Raven, which the real Vincent Price was in), and Galarian Moltres (...which involves explaining a rather long in-joke that involves yet another fandom of mine, so I’ll spare you the explanation).  It is notable that, aside from Galarian Moltres, which is a legendary, that the rest of Vincent’s Pokémon can either Mega Evolve or Gigantamax, and that’s by design--he’s the most powerful warlock in the world, so of course his Pokémon would be OP!

Tokyo Trio Pokemon Teams
fuck it im just gonna do it, its past 3am so its not like i have anything better to do aha Kiyoko look away
this is all based on personal opinion, for funsies bc i dont compete in any tournaments and maybe meme potential but whatever i love the trio and i love pokemon and I Do What I Want.
Itadori Yuuji:
Tumblr media
Togepi: got her in an egg that he basically protected with his life (and still does even after she hatched) and her name is Tama. yes, Tamago (egg). when his friends are sad, he likes to offer them Tama to cuddle with like can i offer you this egg in these trying times? 9 times out of 10 people will accept her like what are you gonna do; say no? you monster. she’s a very happy and well-cared baby but tends to get herself involved in shenanigans that make Yuuji’s heart set out.
Arcanine: the one pokemon he actively sought out – he wanted a puppy and Growlithe just happened to be the first thing he saw and he went “YEAH YOU’LL DO” so now he has a big, fluffy and affectionate tiger-dog. she is a Very Good Girl and still thinks she can fit in people’s laps, mainly because Yuuji’s stupidly strong and can still carry her without problem so she’s under the impression everyone else can do that too (they cannot and she flattens them instantly). she’s very friendly but will bite when you threaten Yuuji.
Lapras: Yuuji’s travelled to a beach and took a nap on a rock – two hours later he wakes up somewhere in the middle of the ocean because Lapras finally decided to move. she seemed to like him a lot though and never left. while sweet and friendly, she’s kind of air-headed and will literally drift out to sea if left unsupervised for too long, so Yuuji keeps a close eye on her lest he suffers from another heart-attack when he spots her miles out on the water. has a very unfortunate tendency to freeze people when they upset her.
Riolu: this one’s a bit of sad one, my lads – the little guy was abandoned for it’s timid nature and low self-esteem, which causes him to be a bit of a crybaby. naturally, he immediately latched onto Yuuji when he scooped him up. Yuuji’s cares a lot for him and is currently steadily building his self-confidence through training and lots of encouragement. Riolu’s actually talented within the battle department but he cries and wails in the most inopportune moments even though he can punch literal craters into concrete. he hides behind Yuuji’s legs a lot but regards his trainer with stars in his eyes.
Hitmontop: nobody fucking knows how he got this finicky evolution – one moment Yuuji trains with an eager Tyrogue, that just followed him one day, and the next the little dude is spinning on his head and Yuuji just went “neat!”. a spinny boy for a spinny boy! he’s very supportive of Riolu and usually cheers on all his battles from the side. Hitmontop also loves to fight just as much as he loves to dance. he and Yuuji tend to train alongside each other to the point he actually mimics Yuuji’s moves during battle – yeah, he taido’d a lot of pokemon in the face.
Tyranitar: this is Princess. Princess appeared as a Larvitar one day and ate half of Yuuji’s rations in his backpack. Yuuji’s also never stopped feeding Princess then. now Princess is very big, very powerful and very, very spoiled. and she’s a bitch to everyone except Yuuji and the team; everyone else can get fucked. whenever Princess appears she’s usually mad for no reason and kind of chucks a fit until Yuuji calms her down. “so this is Princess; say hello– gENTLY, PRINCESS, GENTLY– WHY ARE YOU UPSET???” she seems very fond of Tama.
Kugisaki Nobara:
Tumblr media
Banette: given to her as a Shuppet by her grandmother – its her baby and see can she no wrong in him. and he’s an awful, awful little bastard man. literally loves to cause all kinds of tomfoolery and play tricks and make Yuuji’s Riolu cry (his personal best was 5 seconds and he nearly got his ass kicked by Princess) but with Nobara he’ll revert back to nothing but a sweet little baby boy and drives the other two trainers NUTS. more than once has he flipped the boys off behind Nobara’s back.
Mismagius: a staple pokemon in the Kugisaki family, so of course Nobara wanted to get one too! she’s a classy lady and probably one of the strongest in the team, since she’s the one with the most battle experience. but she too is a bit of a shady bastard who likes to occasionally jump-scare others, however unlike Banette its mostly in good fun. like her trainer, she has a very girly side.
Pumpkaboo: actually, Megumi found her by accident (he thought he was grabbing an actual pumpkin) and Nobara violently tackled him to the ground to get to it first (he’s pretty sure he cracked a few ribs that day). Pumpkaboo is a happy little baby, who usually functions as Nobara’s pet in most cases – she’s very cute and gets complimented a lot. Banette has a one-sided rivalry with her when it comes to the affections of their trainer. its kind of embarrassing really, because Pumpkaboo is the equivalent of pre-schooler.
Honedge: a gift from Maki – Megumi and Yuuji were horrified because their senpai basically equipped Nobara with a living KNIFE. Nobara loves him. he’s very dutiful and trains eagerly to evolve as soon as possible, which why he participates in a lot of battles. he’s very loyal to his trainer and has functioned as an ACTUAL sword more than once, when Nobara was feeling particularly violent. however, he has a bit of grudge against Megumi from the time the guy tried to use him to sharpen a piece of wood.
Skarmory: that fucker took AGES to catch because Nobara just had to track down the most arrogant showboat of a Skarmory she could find. and when she finally did catch him, he became a whole other headache – next to being arrogant, he’s a brat who bickers with his trainer about everything under the sun. of course, both actually do care for each other, but most of the time they’re shrieking at each other for the tiniest shit. the worst thing however is that he can actually back up what he boasts when it comes to battles. he and Nobara share the same amount of blood-thirst, so its probably the one thing they agree on: make the enemy REGRET.
Bewear: Nobara saw a picture of a Stufful once and immediately became obsessed. she loved her even more when she evolved into Bewear. who doesn’t want a life-sized plushy to cuddle? one that can also crush your enemies to dust and make them cry with one glance alone? the boys find her absolutely terrifying, but Nobara loves her cuddly and very, very violent girl. not to mention, she’s very strong and likes to carry Nobara around whenever she’s tired from walking all day long. she too is a strong member of the team, but she’s rather indifferent to battles to be honest.
Fushiguro Megumi:
Tumblr media
Lycanroc: Gyokuken – Megumi’s first pal who managed to evolve into the fabled Dusk Form. he was hatched from an egg when Megumi was still young and naturally, is closest with the boy. he’s very diligent when it comes to battles and rarely leaves Megumi’s side, almost functioning as some sort of bodyguard. however, he’s still susceptible to dog-like behavior and naturally goes absolutely stupid when it comes to belly rubs and kisses and pets. call him a Good Boy and he goes nuts – he’s especially affectionate with Yuuji. yasu yasu~
Seviper: Orochi – got into a rough scuffle with some Zangoose and Megumi took him in for some care. in the end, he kind of refused to leave since he’s taken a liking to the boy. he’s littered with scars from previous battles but Megumi makes sure they are well taken care of so they won’t hurt Orochi. while he’s a strong fighter, his trainer doesn’t really like using him in battle due to his old injuries, but has always managed to change the tide of battle for him. he likes to take long naps under the sun.
Lopunny: Usagi – Megumi was actually kind of aiming for something else and caught her by accident as a Buneary, which he didn’t really mind – but she did. Megumi wasn’t aware such a little creature could be so full of hate (the fact that their starting friendship level is on par with legendaries...the gods hate you and so does this little bunny). but after some (very) painful effort, he finally did manage to evolve Usa – only to immediately get smothered by her affection. she’s very upbeat and cheerful, which looks hysterical when paired with such a gloomy looking guy. however, she’s a strong opponent and has demolished her fair share of enemies with her powerful kicks. Yuuji seems to be very fond of her.
Donphan: Bansho – interestingly enough, Megumi got Bansho as an evolved Donphan already, mostly because the previous trainer had no idea how to handle his newfound strength, so Megumi kind of adopted him. initially, it was a little awkward between them since they obviously haven’t built a dynamic yet. now, Bansho is one of Megumi’s heaviest hitters, but he doesn’t appear a lot in battle due to his rather destructive nature. outside of battle, he’s actually pretty calm and enjoys mud-baths (much to Megumi’s dismay) and usually joins Orochi for naps. he’s a rather big fellow and can actually be ridden on.
Politoed: Gama – acquired through a trade, Gama is, next to Usa, Megumi’s jolliest pokemon. who can even resist those big shiny eyes and that wide smile. Megumi probably, because Gama likes to cause trouble with little pranks and more often that not, has he stolen other’s share of food with his sticky tongue. aside from his mildly bratty behavior, Gama is capable in battle, especially in water-based ones. naturally, he likes to take baths and Megumi makes sure that Gama gets to chill out in a tub of water on especially hot days. Gama also has a very concerning habit of falling asleep while sticking onto high walls. him and Lopunny lowkey compete who is the cutest between both of them.
Decidueye: Nue – a present from Gojo, when she was still a Rowlet. initially a nervous little sweetheart, Nue’s grown into a formidable foe, who is known to sweep down for the kill and hone in on targets with terrifying accuracy. her battles are very entertaining to watch, as she’s incredibly agile and elegant while fighting. she’s a very proud being and very protective of her trainer – there had been several cases where she flapped her wings erratically and extended her claws towards people with ill-intentions, something that is very unusual since she’s notorious for being rather stoic but attentive. Megumi’s erratic hair are partially her doing, since she likes to tug on them.

How about headcanons on the galar gym leaders' teams?
This is gonna take a while bc there are so many pokemon in the League. I’m gonna make one headcanon for each pokemon. Hope that’s okay. And also only the team when you challenge the gym because that would be too many pokemon otherwise.
Here’s a quick overall headcanon:
Gym Leader’s teams are officially documented as battle pokemon. They are rotated out all the time. And almost every gym leader has pokemon outside of their teams that they train for events that allow them to use different teams than their official gym team.
Milo:
-Gossifluer is a bit of a brat. He’s picky and will throw a tantrum when Milo changes his food.
-Eldegoss is a very nurturing pokemon. He likes to wrap his cape around people he likes.
Nessa:
-Goldeen is Nessa’s favorite pokemon to model with that’s on her team. Very arrogant.
-Arrokuda is constantly in trouble with Nessa because she likes to chew on Nessa’s shoes and hair.
-Drednaw, as well all know, is a big baby. But they also consider themselves the protector of the team. If the other pokemon is in danger (outside of battle obviously), Drednaw will step in to help.
Kabu:
-Ninetails is a pretty girl and much smarter than Kabu’s other pokemon. She likes to mess with them and look good while doing it.
-Arcanine is a ball of energy and loves anything that will pet him, play with him or feed him. If he hates you, give him a treat and he will be your best friend immediately.
-Centiskorch is constantly a meme. He always looks weird on camera, which means that there’s a new meme of him every month. And they’re all hilarious.
Bea:
-Hitmontop is actually a new addition to Bea’s team. He was added to Bea’s gym team only a few months ago.
-Pangoro actually came from Spikemuth. He was causing problems in the town and Piers was struggling to handle the situation so he called Bea in. As a reward, he let her keep him, and Bea saw a lot of potential, so she started to train him, asking Piers for advice because its a dark type.
-Sirfetch’d spent a looooong time being trained by Bea before he became a part of the gym team. He struggled when he was younger to keep up with Bea’s other pokemon, but eventually he got it and is now basking in the glory of being a battle ready pokemon.
-Machamp is Bea’s assistant pokemon as well as her ace. She uses her to help train her other pokemon. Sometimes, Bea will send them all out on their own and Machamp can train them herself.
Allister:
-Yamask is a very young, yet overly powerful pokemon. Allister doesn’t usually use first evolution pokemon on his team, but this Yamask is oddly strong and he hasn’t gotten the chance to evolve him yet.
-Mimikyu is Allister’s first pokemon. He has been by Allister’s side for years.
-Cursola is the only pokemon that Allister actively sought out. They’re rare in Galar and Allister was fascinated when he read about it, so he went looking for one. It took a while, but he managed to get her and he’s glad he went through the effort.
-Gengar was originally going to attack Allister when they first met in a graveyard. It wasn’t until Allister confronted him that Gengar was like “oh wait I like this kid.” And he was a Ghastly at the time.
Opal:
-Opal’s Weezing is pretty old and grumpy. She bites anyone who’s not Opal. Not hard, though.
-Mawile was not very well known until Opal added her to her team. Then they spiked in popularity around Galar.
-Togekiss was a gift from an old friend. For a long time, Opal didn’t plan on training her for battle, but things changed when a pokemon from Opal’s past team had to retire.
-Alcreamie was Opal’s first pokemon, back when she was a Milcery. Opal spent a long times reasearching Alcreamies to make sure she got the variant she wanted. Also, because she wasn’t allowed to train pokemon due to being a girl when she was a kid, she snuck out into the woods and just found Milcery. It was a long time before she got a chance to catch her.
Melony:
-Frosmoth was a new-ish addition. Melony was peer pressured into adding a really strong Snom to her team as a meme, but then she evolved live on TV, which was wild.
-Melony was really unsure about Darmanitan. She didn’t think she wanted a pokemon that was so volatile and able to become a fire type. However, she was proven wrong, and with Kabu’s help, she’s able to train Darmanitan really well.
-Melony only chose to train an Eiscue because she’s funny looking. She never intended to add Eiscue to her team, but she proved to be a very powerful battle pokemon.
-Lapras met Melony when Gordie was very young. They took a vacation to a nearby warm beach once, and Gordie was swept away by the waves. While Melony was scrambling to get to Gordie, Lapras found him and brought him back to Melony. Lapras followed them around the rest of the day, so Melony decided to add her to the team.
Gordie:
-Barbaracle makes Gordie nervous still. He’s not used to working with him and he’s a bit scared of all the hands. But there’s no denying that Barbaracle is very strong.
-Shuckle, of course, is only there for the meme. He’s also a bit of a secret weapon, though, to Gordie. He has trained this little guy so much that he’s actually one of the strongest pokemon Gordie owns. He uses the power of underestimation against his opponents.
-Stonejourner is a gift from Milo. Who knew he would be so strong? Milo’s very happy that Gordie uses his pokemon on his Gym Team.
-Coalossal was a pokemon that made Gordie realize he wanted to be a rock specialist. He appreciates that it’s also fire type, because it’s a little extra push against being an ice type specialist.
Piers:
-Scrafty hoards Piers’ pillows. Anything soft he can find, he makes a pile on his bed and keeps them. Piers has to wrestle them away from him, and no matter how many pillows he buys for Scrafty, he just wants more.
-Malamar is definitely the ring leader. He’s a psychic type and a lot smarter than the rest of Piers’ team. He likes to use this influence for evil. He’s a jerk, but Piers still gives him scratches under his beak (his favorite <3)
-Skuntank is pretty much a cat. He climbs on Piers whenever he gets the chance. Easily found asleep on Piers’ lap while Piers is idly petting him. Good thing Skuntanks only smell when they’re distressed.
-As well all know based on my fic (shameless self promotion, what about it?), Piers met Obstagoon when he was very young in a dumpster. However, something I haven’t mentioned yet is that when he was a Linoone, he would constantly try to be Piers’ neck pillow.
Raihan:
-Torkoal has bad eyesight. Raihan often has to pick him up and carry him places because he can’t see well and he moves slowly.
-Raihan uses Goodra to present to kids. He does educational presentations about dragon types, pokemon training, and pokemon safety to students in schools. Goodra, because she’s so friendly, is Raihan’s go to for this task.
-Turtonator is actually very shy. He likes to hide in his shell whenever he can. The only time he’s confident is when he’s in battle or training.
-Flygon is Raihan’s personal transport. Faster than any Corviknight. Also makes for a really cool entrance.
-Duraludon loves attention. He loves being Raihan’s Ace and he loves being given all that love. Raihan shows him fan content of people loving him and it makes Duraludon stamp around and make happy building noises.
Leon: (And I chose Sobble so he has Rillaboom, I do make the rules and you cannot change them)
-Aegislash was a gift from Rose when he became Champion. Rose said that Leon needed a pokemon fitting of his title.
-Raihan and Leon were rivals since they were kids. Leon got Dragapult simply to compete with Raihan at first, but they now have a very strong bond.
-Haxorus actually came from a distant friend from another region. He’s also very hot-headed, which makes it risky but rewarding to train him.
-Rhyperior came from the Isle of Armor. Leon caught him while training at the Dojo. One time, while at the Isle of Armor, Hop got in trouble with some Wild pokemon. Rhyperior broke out of Leon’s pokeball and saved him before Leon could react.
-Rillaboom, as well as the other starters, came from Leon’s status. They’re only available in captivity and are very hard to come by. Luckily, Leon is the Champion, so they were the perfect gift for his brother. He was secretly hoping he’d get to keep Rillaboom, so he’s happy with the outcome.
-Charizard came from Mustard, of course, but Leon was originally going to pick Bulbasaur. Right before he made the choice, though, he left to think about it and ended up lost and in trouble. He didn’t have his pokemon with him. It was Charmander that wandered off and found him. After that, Leon had no choice but to pick him.

I'm a sucker for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, so You have Headcannons about it?
I'll Start saying that One of My First Playthroughs Treecko was my partner, so When Grovyle shows up I Made The Crazy HC that he was my partner from The future ajdbdj
Oh my good friend, it depends on which game you’re asking about!
But in general, I do love the wild implications and questions raised by having a Treecko on your team in Explorers. I suppose a similar idea presents itself in Rescue Team, though not involving time travel. Imagine if your partner was a Charmander, and the Charizard on Team A.C.T. was actually their biological dad? Just something to think about. Speaking of fathers, can we just take a moment to give a shoutout for how Dugtrio is depicted? (In Explorers, I can’t remember if they did the same thing in Rescue) I know it’s because they have three heads, and I know referring to oneself as multiple people isn’t really something that we see in the same context in real life...but Dugtrio being the way they are and everyone just accepting it, despite how it’s different than the norm...that’s such a great example to set? Like, I didn’t get it as a kid, but I so appreciate it now. It’s an unorthodox form of representation, but the writing of Dugtrio’s character has its heart in the right place.
Most headcanons I have will probably be for Explorers, since while I love all of these games, that is the one that I’ve played backwards and forwards. Here’s one: The Multiverse Theory. I believe there are several timelines that have occurred and overlap each other. The Dark Future, as well as the Restored Future that the heroes create, are just two examples. I feel like Darkrai would have tried several times, creating new portals for each failure.
Here’s a tricky question: If the Time Gears are supposed to be in Temporal Tower, and even have slots fitted for them...why weren’t they there in the first place? Why were they placed in different locations around the world? If Darkrai moved them, why did they have Guardians who seemed to have been there for generations, assuming that that was where the Gears were supposed to be? Here’s another question: The Time Gear depicted on the loading screen for Explorers of Darkness...what was that about? As of Sky, we’ve seen every Time Gear location, and there were only five...this is what I mean. Multiverse. That location looked a hell of a lot like the Dark Crater. I bet there was a timeline where Darkrai kept one of the Time Gears to ensure Temporal Tower could never be fully restored. We only know that he “sabotaged it” after all.
Here’s another question about Darkrai’s powers: How the heck does he have the ability to transfigure a human into a pokemon? How was he able to do that? I’m pretty sure the amnesia was just a naturally occurring side-effect, that the MC bumped their head or something. So that would answer that question. Here’s another point - Darkrai was aiming for Grovyle. MC shielded him. Which of course raises the question - what the heck would that attack have done to Grovyle? I’m not sure, part of me wonders if it wouldn’t have reduced him to being a Treecko, perhaps? That could be the connection. Or maybe it was just a run of the mill nightmare attack that he’s known for, but since it was meant for a Pokemon’s mind, it responded different to a human’s? What if the MC being a pokemon is, itself, a kind of dream, come to life?
The Dimensional Scream. This ability is so weird. In the past, it can work on anything. In the future, it’s only Time Gears. Why is that? I feel like maybe it has some connection to how the Time Gears being in different places across different timelines. How in some, they’re in Temporal Tower, yet in others, they’re around the world. I wonder where an ability like this would come from, and why only humans can have it. Why couldn’t say, a psychic type pokemon have this power? We see from the MC’s transformation that they retain the ability even in a Pokemon’s body. So again, why is it only humans who can have this power? That’s not even getting into the unanswered questions about how humans fit into this universe. It’s not like Gates to Infinity where humans are directly established to be seen as fairy tales to the Pokemon. In this game, they know what humans are, but the player is the only one they ever meet.
Here’s a fun theory. Those Time Gears fit into Temporal Tower, into a shape that looks like one big Time Gear. Suppose in the original, true timeline....it was all  one Gear? That Darkrai’s sabotage was what broke it into pieces? Suppose the fracture of time is what caused all the divergent timelines to become possible, to overlap? Suppose the MC is psychically attuned to the fracture in time, and that connection is what creates the Dimensional Scream? It would tie in with how it’s animated, that’s for sure. It could go a ways to explaining why the ability is so random. Why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, and how it even seems to be affected by the presence of Time Gears or lack thereof. What if The Dark Future is a kind of chasm where all of the timelines are leading to unless changed, and within the Dark Future, time itself is dying? After all, everything has frozen, and Dialga has lost all sense of reason.  So the connection to other timelines is actually weaker in the Dark Future, hence only being able to use The Scream in connection to the Time Gears?
I’d imagine the MC was a coveted asset in the war. That Dusknoir would have, at one time, badly wanted to recruit them to work for Primal Dialga, because they would be the greatest weapon the Resistance could possibly have. But both the MC and Grovyle were willing to let themselves die to bring a better tomorrow (or well, “today) for the pokemon (and humans?) of their world. You know how Grovyle talks about seeing the sunrise for the first time? The morning after Darkrai’s attack? How much it blew him away and strengthened his resolve? Yeah, I think about that moment a lot. Man, the plot twists and characters in these games are so good. Even if you predicted the Grovyle/Dusknoir switcharoo, did anyone see the “My best friend...” twist coming? I know I didn’t, but it was so well foreshadowed! Speaking of that scene, the place we meet up with Celebi is absolutely the future version of Fogbound Lake. I don’t know if that was supposed to be obviously true, or if it’s just a head-canon on my part, but it seemed pretty clear. Hell if we assume that the portals can only travel through time, not space...then that means Dusknoir just brought us to the future of Treasure Town. What if...what if the Stockade was what’s left of the Guild? Oh my god.
Let’s talk about the Partner. How they had the Relic Fragment with them, the key to powering the Rainbow Stoneship, the beacon to signal Lapras...and the Partner just “happened to pick it up somewhere.” Seriously, that’s all we get. They handwave the question of where the hell the partner got this, and I think it’s an important one to think about. The way I see it, there are two possibilities. One, that the Relic Fragment itself chose the Partner, and thus presented itself to them. Think of like, the Sword of Gryffindor presenting itself to someone from that House who is worthy. If the Relic Fragment could somehow sense within the Partners soul that they were worthy, a good person. The other possibility is that the Relic Fragment was somehow stolen from where it was meant to be kept, and ended up getting passed around, stolen or moved by unsuspecting pokemon until it fell into the partner’s lap by pure chance. But if I had to guess a resting place for the Relic Fragment...hmm. I don’t know why Waterfall Cave is my first guess, since it doesn’t suit the aesthetic of the gem room at all. But it does have a built in trap. What if the gems were just a decoy to distract any visitors from the seemingly less fancy Fragment? Would make sense, especially since you can’t pick them up. Hell the cave itself is supposed to be a secret in general.

Thoughts journal for season 13!! 😎😎 (2/4)
Here we go with another four episodes! I'm enjoying myself A LOT and I do hope we will continue this way! I can't wait to know more about Rock Mom and who really is the Skull Sorcerer and ENOUGH LET'S GO TO THE EPISODES!!! 💕💕
Here we go!!
QUEEN OF THE MUNCE
For this one I already saw the Nya's knight suit already... and she was gorgeous... I mean she always is but COME ON 💙💙💙
These munce are too much 😂 They are kind of adorable in their stupidity really
Jay going full "we're never going to get out Imma get overly pessimistic because YES" is always a familiar sight, almost as him spazzing out during a difficult situation... that could still happen 🤷‍♀️
Good thing Nya gets the brain cell most of the time 👌
Of course while I'm waiting for the third part of Tales of Arcadia, something so similar to the Trollmarket comes my way 😂 Very nice thought, a bit dark. I hope it doesn't get in the way of seeing the good fighting scenes
Okay but THIS

IS PLAIN CURSED, PLAIN BALD HEADS😱😱😱 Well I'm guessing Tommy doesn't have excuses anymore to become a LEGO character 😂
Well Murt, that was one breathtaking story, you should be a storyteller 👍
Ah, there we go, with the Jay and Nya and queen situation 😒 It's not that bad really, considering I thought it was going to be just a weak way to include Jay with just another triangle. It didn't last long so that's kinda fine, but it is annoying that Nya is pushed away. But overall better than I expected
Also it is nice the reminder that she is his yang 💙❤💙❤
Tumblr media
And they are still adorable 😂😂 I like that you can tell immediately here who's the strong one of the couple 😎😎
So there is a drawing of the Millie Gillie guy/gal on that wall, huh... was I in the wrong about that being Cole's mom? I thought they said she, but English is not my first language so I could be wrong 🤷‍♀️
Ninja Jay could be the new Kai Ninjago 😂
Aww, that part with the lightning and the crystals was so pretty 🤩🤩
And there we go with the confrontation 😛 I did snorted seeing Jay kinda offended at Nya not wanting to fight for him, but she is still super adorable saying that they belong 💕💕 Also Lloyd just being there trying to calm everyone down, le poor baby 😂😂
Yep, the fire instinct kicking in, Nya is the daughter of Ray after all 🤷‍♀️
AND SHE LOOKS ABSOLUTELY GLORIOUS WITH THE ARMOR 🤩🤩
Oh, apparently the queen of munce can do spin dash 😱
Woooo, that preparation for the spinjitzu was so cool 🤩 And of course she kicked the HECK out of her, THAT'S MY GIRL!!!
And now she's the queen, great, more problems to come 😅 We'll see how this plays out, and I am kinda curious to see queen Nya at work ☺
Not my favorite episode, but still enjoyable, let's keep getting better and better!
So... WHERE IS MY FLAME BABE?!? ❤
TRIAL BY MINO
THERE HE IS 😍😍😍
I don't know if it's because it's a very obvious but convenient thing to do or I just love Kai THAT much, but I love when there's dark and he just lights up his hand. Idk, I just think it's neat 🙂
There're the Geckos! They are cute too 💜 Also chanting about the Millie Gillie guy, I'm still convinced that's just Cole's mom! Also I'm kinda guessing the Skull Sorcerer is the king of Shintaro. He is the most suspicious for now, we'll see how it goes 🤷‍♀️
Poor Kai got the awful thing in his mouth... AND HAIR!!! Look out sweetie, your beautiful chocolaty hair!! 😱
OMG ZANE CALLING OUT KAI ABOUT HIS BLABBERING AS HE DOESN'T HAS A SKELETON 😂😂 I laughed too much at it, I'm sorry Tin Can 😅
Again
Tumblr media
Really like the crystal vibe 😍 This one is blue, the other was green, is there a reason?
I missed Kai and Zane together, I missed anyone with Zane in general! It's always a nice contrast and always amusing, especially if hotheadTM is involved 💕
So they throw rocks to show approval, I'm loving this society for some reasons 😂
Okay, vengestone is literally everywhere, there is no way all this stuff was not on purpose. It would make sense that a place studied to weaken an elemental master was meant for something more. Wooooo, ROCK MOM ROCK MOM 🖤🖤🖤
Awwww, I don't know why but them acknowledging the elemental masters is super satisfying 💜
Oh so Kai is not a king, he's a chancellor... and he didn't want to 😂😂 Vincent definitely had fun voicing this episode 👌
Okay, so there are three explorers involved? I'm guessing the muscular one in the trailer was one of them. I wonder what will be their part in the story 🤔
Poor Kai, his encouragement speeches used to be the key of convincing, here it's harder. Let's see how they will deal with this... also how Kai will react with queen Nya of the munce 😂
Pff, Zane throwing the rock of encouragement, that was so adorable 🤍
Tumblr media
I really missed these two ❤🤍❤🤍
THE SKULL SORCERER
Seriously, even talking to herself and thinking about the worst situations like Bluebell? If Cole and Vania do end up together, I'll still hold onto the fact that Rocky is into the loquatious type 😂😂
Okay, a sweet princess' paranoia towards a little white cute dragon named Chompy?
Tumblr media
One of the cutest thing ever seen 😍 Also I am a firm believer that everything improves if you put a dragon into it, another reason why I love Ninjago so much 🤍🤍🤍
Pff, seeing Vania talking about call then the cut on the black ninja makes me think about that one vine with the guy hanging with his phone saying "Yeah I'm okay mom, bye (phone down)... I AM NOT OKAY!!" 😂
SOLO MOMENT WITH COLE!!! Freaking yes, and it looks like the little tic of talking to himself when stressed from March of the Oni got stuck 🙃🙃
Lava punches back! Big bad bats!! Spiders!!... wait- AAAHHH 😱
Okay, forgive my skepticism when I doubt that a simple spider web could stop one of the strongest ninja of the team. We needed Vania to the rescue, alright, still sounds a little easy but eh watcha gonna do 🤷‍♀️
SHE HAS HER HAIR DOWN!!! SHE LOOKS STUNNING!!! Golden hair girl 💛💛
And Chompy is a big good boy 🤩
CALLED IT!!! CALLED IT FOR THE KING!!!... I mean it was kinda obvious 😅 Still, happy I thought about it before it actually happened. Although it's curious that the reveal happens now, halfway there, unlike in Prime Empire where it took almost all the season to build up the reveal. What's left for the finale?... ROCK MOM?!?!
There's a customer for all that vengestone? That... actually makes a lot of sense. Anyone who is against the ninja would want it really, and that only considering past villains. And if we think about possible elemental masters coming back, uuuhhh, I like where this is going!!
YOU CANNOT HURT A BABY DRAGON IN THIS SHOW AND NOT PAY I HOPE YOU GET THE WORST DEATH/DEFEAT OF ALL THE FRANCHISE 👿👿👿
Wait, so they don't naturally have wings? Oh, that's why she didn't have them in the trailer, I see 🤔
This is probably the only moment when I think they rushed a bit. Not too much, I iust feel like we haven't seen enough of Vania and her father to truly feel that decision moment as fundamental. Still cool, still intense, but kinda light. Anyway GO PRINCESS GO!!! 💕💕
THE REAL FALL
Oh Garmadon... that title... *flashbacks The Fall while realizing this is indeed Cole's season* NOT AGAIN 😱😱😱
I mean they are already falling so... uh, let's see how it goes
HE EVEN FRAMED CHOMPY HE MUST DIE SO HARD 😡👿😡👿
Okay the fall here is actually kind of hilarious 😂 Or is it because I love that Kirby gets to be on the center of the attention and he is giving his all? Idk, I love all the voice actors of the show really 🤷‍♀️
Hey, you people watching this
Tumblr media
Am I the only one getting emotional here?? 😢 ... just me, huh 😅 I mean come on, it's Cole and Wu! The first leader and the sensei! The used to be dad and his son Cole Jr.! I headcanon that Cole was the first to arrive at the monastery and this feels like the old times... EMOTIONAL PEOPLE
Lol, sensei taking the time to compliment Vania about her behavior, he's gonna adopt her when this is over 😂
I mean, you kinda faced worst yes, you fell into the Underworld on dragons you used to be afraid of, you fell from a ship with an anchor, you fell into a junk compactor that almost squashed you against your rival now best friend, you fell from SPACE towards THE EARTH, you fell from a ladder... THE LADDER COLE 😱😱😱 (this fangirl will never recover from that)
Aaaand a giant web. Of course. Classic Ninjago lack of luck right there 👈👈
Clutch Powers still lives 😂
Okay, seriously? She freaks out when things gets out of hand and talks about staying calm by making vocal exercises! Freaking, it might be me trying to find an excuse to think about Bruise, but they are making it a little too easy for me 🖤💙🖤💙
I am kinda loving her being so genuine, Idk, I really like Vania. She does her best 👍
Falling > Dying, life lessons by your master of Earth 😎 Wu sounds so done, they can never go anywhere without something crazy like this happening 🤣
Why is this so funny, the sequel of The Fall shouldn't be 😂 Meh, not complaining
That was one very mad Lapras
YES THANK YOU SENSEI!!! Finally he acknowledged it, Cole is literally surrounded by his element, OF COURSE he is crazy strong in here. I needed this scene, heck yeah, I love elemental powers 🖤
Tumblr media
Oh they must be the explorers... Merlin, Assassin's Creed and Conan the Barbarian 😅 So we hit rock bottom, literally apparently, and one of the spider's name is Adam... OKAY
So the real fall was in fact Cole falling asleep for the shock 😂 Lol if Cole and Vania really don't end up together, I can joke and say that in this season Cole has never fell harder 😉😉
This was very amusing, I liked this episode, I would rewatch it only for the comments 😂 I'm curious to see what else will happen, especially with these three now involved! Who are they?

The Broken Traveller - Chapter 1
Pairing: Leon x Reader
Warnings: None
Word Count: 2,819
Notes: Hello everyone! My name is Naomi and this is my first Pokémon fanfiction, I hope you enjoy! I hope this makes sense and is hopefully somewhat good... so let me know what you think!
Tumblr media
‘Just give in, just walk out there y/n, if you just accept this as your fate you’ll never have to worry about anything ever again. No spontaneous quests with Nebula to try and find other islands and people. No more nagging from mother.’
‘No more freedom.’
You looked up, glancing over the crowd of people, your tribe’s people, who eagerly were waiting for you to finally drink the nectar that would sell away your soul forever. And when you looked to your right, your trusted partner Pokémon, Nebula, your Dragapult, had a stoic look on her face, and you knew she was thinking the same thing as you.
‘If we don’t escape now, we’ll never have our free will again.’
You see, the nectar you were about to drink was from a flower that had been revered in your tribe’s history. The clan of dragon Pokémon who lived on this isle before your people travelled here from a far-off land, used this flower’s nectar to mind control your people into staying here forever, underneath their rule.
Early on, it had become common rule that whoever the small population of Dragapults stuck by was the “royal” family of the tribe.
And now here you were, the first-born daughter of these so-called leaders. But you were different from all of your ancestors and even your siblings who had been born after you.
The nectar hadn’t worked on you.
It’s tradition for every child to drink the nectar as soon as they are born. However, when they had given you some, they hadn’t even noticed that it didn’t work until it was too late.
And now, to cover it up, your parents had created some random ceremony to “coronate” you as the new leader of the tribe, now that you were old enough, at least.
But you not being controlled by the flower’s nectar caused a lot of problems for your parents, as you always wanted to explore. And eventually, you had figured out a way to completely slip by them.
Which led you to the ocean.
When you saw the big, blue waves crashing in on the shore, you knew you wanted to know what was beyond what you could see. Nebula, who at the time was a Dreepy, tried to at least encourage you to stay in the village, but you couldn’t be swayed, you wanted to swim far, far away from it all.
Eventually Nebula was swayed to your side, as she saw exactly what you had been seeing in the village for years. The mind-controlled eyes of the citizens, the silence that resonated in the isle every day, and the dragon Pokémon who did nothing but lay about.
And now, you realized you should’ve gone through with one of your escape plans years ago. Because as you looked over the crowd of people once again, you saw exactly what you didn’t want to see.
Green, hypnotized eyes focused right on you and dragon Pokémon flying above it all, keeping a very close eye on you. You turned away quickly, walking over to Nebula. “Nebula, we have to get out of here,” you whispered to her, “I don’t want to do this, I don’t want to lose my free will forever.”
Nebula nods at you, and the two of you slip back into the dressing room, where your elegant gown is waiting for you. As you look over it and the clothes you took off earlier to put on a simple summer dress, you knew probably staying in this summer dress would be the best option, considering you were about to swim across a sea.
“Go find the escape bag we packed,” you said to Nebula, and she nodded before vanishing. You sighed to yourself in relief, already knowing how easy this was going to be. Your escape route that you have had since you were little was failproof, and would take you right to the ocean.
Suddenly, Nebula appeared again, holding the bag that you and her had repacked so many times over the years. You smiled at her and said, “Alright, what are we waiting for then? It’s off to freedom!”
After carefully exiting the large hut you were currently in, you instinctually made your way to your escape path. Nebula trailed closely behind you, and soon enough, you started hearing the crashing of waves upon the beach and the swoosh of the water as it retreated back into the ocean.
As you ran out onto the beach, a cool breeze blew right past you and you exclaimed, “Alright other lands, here I come!” Nebula cried out happily as she floated next to you, and you slowly grabbed the edges of your dress, feeling inspired to take it off for some reason.
Just as you threw the dress to the ground, and explosion sounded next you, and you and Nebula jumped out of the way. As the dust from the sand cleared, you gulped in fear as you realized who it was.
The guards of the village, with your mother leading all of them. “I can’t believe you didn’t think that I wouldn’t think you’d try and escape today, y/n!,” your mother exclaims, her Dragapult soaring next to her.
You hopped into a fighting stance, Nebula roaring right next to you. “And you’re even more of a fool if you possibly think you can beat me!,” she screams, lifting one of her arms up, “Guards, Dragapult, Attack!”
All of the guards let out a battle cry, and their Pokémon, such as Haxorus, Garchomp, and Hydreigon, all charged forward at you, along with your mother’s Dragapult.
Nebula flies in front of you, and lets off a series of attacks, managing to knock down a few of the rushing Pokémon. You know there’s not much you can do, so you keep cheering on Nebula as she continues to fire off attacks.
The air is think with particles of flying sand, and it continually attacks your senses. But suddenly, you hear Nebula’s voice in your head.
‘Y/n!,’ she exclaims, ‘Go on! Swim as fast as you can, no one can see you with all of this debris in the air! I’ll hold them off like this for as long as I can. Be safe, I love you...’
Your eyes fill with tears before you exclaim back, “I can’t just leave you here Nebula, your my partner in crime! We haven’t even gotten to do half of the things we’ve always wanted to do together!”
‘Just go y/n!,’ she yells back, ‘I’ll find you someday and we can go on all of the crazy adventures that we want... Just go and find the place you’ve been dreaming of finding! Keep your free spirit!’
You scream out in agony as Nebula keeps firing off attacks. “I love you Nebula! I’ll find you again one day, I promise!,” you yelled at her before quietly slipping under the waters of the ocean.
Due to all of the commotion, the waters were quite shaky, but you managed to swim through them. You knew that if they saw you, they would send more Pokémon your way, so you made sure that when you came up for breaths, you barely breached the water’s surface.
At some point, you started to lose track of exactly how long you had been swimming for, but you were starting to feel quite tired and dizzy. You decided it was probably safe to put your whole head above the water’s surface, and as you looked around, you realized there was no land in sight at all.
Dread and fear filled your body, as you knew your body wouldn’t be able to keep up with this much swimming for much longer. But suddenly, you started to notice all of the other creatures swimming around in the waters around you.
You recognized none of them, and you were quickly afraid that they would try and harm you. So, you immediately picked up where you left off and swam off in the direction you had been going in this entire time.
And as you continued swimming, your mind started becoming foggier and foggier, your strokes becoming slow and fatigued. But just as you breached the surface to take another breath, you finally noticed a land mass in the distance.
But when you went back underneath the water, your mind slipped from you, and you started to sink to the bottom of the sea.
Luckily... there was a Lapras nearby who had noticed your plight...
~~
Leon, somehow for the first time in years since becoming the Champion of the Galar region, had a day off. He had already arranged to have dinner with his family later that night, and he was very excited to see his little brother, Hop, who he was bringing a very special gift for tonight.
But right now, he had flown Charizard out to one of the ocean beaches of Galar. Galar’s beaches were largely unexplored, so he wasn’t surprised when he saw how overgrown most of the beaches were or when he saw the number of wild Pokémon battling it out for dominance over one another.
But him and Charizard had spotted a nice beach to relax on, and cool breezes blew past as they set up a tent and pulled out the curry pot. And just as he was about to add the berries to start cooking up one of his favorite curries, he noticed a Lapras in the distance, a figure clearly draped over its back.
“Charizard, look!,” Leon said, pointing right to the Lapras, who had clearly now seen them and was heading right towards their beach. Charizard’s eyes widened, and he flew up to go over to the Lapras, who was clearly fatigued from swimming so much with an extra weight on its back.
As the Lapras swam into the shore, Leon brought over some medicines and potions to make sure it was okay. Charizard carefully grabbed the person off of their back, clearly flinching when he felt how cold the person’s skin was.
Leon applied some of the medicines to the Lapras before asking, “Is that your trainer?” The Lapras shook its head, before turning its head as if to indicate that it needed to get back to the ocean. “I’ll make sure she’s alright,” Leon says to the Lapras, “Go back to your family, I’m sure that’s what your signaling for.”
The Lapras bows to Leon, chirping happily before elegantly swimming back into the water. Leon immediately runs back up to Charizard who has already placed the person next to the fire.
The person, who is most definitely a girl, was clad in nothing but undergarments and many small, but sharp cuts ran across her entire body. “Charizard, fetch a blanket from the tent, will you?”
Charizard grunted before reaching into the tent carefully, pulling out the fluffiest blanket they had. He stomped over to Leon, who immediately threw it over the girl.
After a few minutes of pacing back and forth, Leon was truly unsure of what he should do with this girl. He knew he should take the girl to a hospital, but then he would be late or even miss his dinner with his family. And miss giving Hop his very own starter Pokémon!
He was immediately snapped out of his thoughts as he heard the girl groan from behind him, and as he turned back to her, he saw her eyes were starting to flutter open...
~~
As you started regaining consciousness, you felt something large and soft draped over your body, and grains of sand underneath your back. And then you felt all of the cuts that had come from the tussle on the shore.
You let out a large groan at the immense amount of pain you were in, and your eyes started fluttering open, wincing at the bright light from the sun above you. And then you heard something move next to you, and you shot up from whatever you were underneath.
As you did so, your eyes finally completely adjusted and you immediately saw a man with long, purple hair, yellow eyes, and an absurd sense of fashion standing in front of you, along with a fiery dragon type of Pokémon standing behind him.
‘Wait, aren’t I in my...,’ you realize, your mind freezing instantly, as you duck into a ball, squeezing your eyes shut. “Don’t look at me!,” you exclaim in embarrassment, and you hear the fire Pokémon let out a puff of steam.
Your mind wasn’t completely clear either, so squeezing your eyes shut as hard as you were made you fall over again, your mind still barely grasping onto consciousness. You heard the man run over to you, and your eyes slowly fluttered open again to see him crouching over you.
You couldn’t even hear what he was saying, as your hearing had somehow been impaired as well. But all you could see was his bright yellow eyes, reflecting different emotions in them.
And you raised your hand up to his face slowly, before saying, “Yellow... eyes? I’ve never seen anyone with yellow eyes... doesn’t everyone have green eyes?”
The last thing you felt before your consciousness slipped away again was his soft skin against your hand.
~~
Leon was perplexed. He wasn’t sure what to think anymore. He could still feel the girl’s cold hand against his face as she spoke. She had never seen anyone with yellow eyes? Where had she been living her entire life?
He looked off into the vast ocean, but saw no sign of islands out in the distance. But he was shaken out of his thoughts by his Rotom Phone ringing. He pulled out his phone rapidly, quickly answering once he saw it was Hop.
“Lee, when are you going to be home? Even mum is fretting!,” Hop exclaims worriedly, “Did something come up? Why didn’t you call us?”
Leon can perfectly picture Hop’s dejected face, and his heart crushes underneath all of the pressure he’s feeling. “I’ll try and make it home tonight, little brother... but something big came up and I’ve only just started dealing with it. Tell mom,” Leon says, choking on his own tears, “That I’m sorry I couldn’t make it home for dinner tonight. Be safe Hop, I’ll be home as soon as I can.”
He quickly hangs up, multiple bangs of guilt bouncing through his body. His entire family is probably upset at him for cancelling dinner plans once again, but he looks down and sees the girl, still laying almost lifelessly in the sand.
“Charizard, let’s go. We’ve got to get this girl to a hospital, quick.”
~~
When he arrived at the hospital in Hammerlocke, the nurses immediately gasped at the state she was in, and the fact that she was being brought in by the Champion himself. After he explained exactly where he found her, the nurses rushed her off to a room to look over her.
And as he sat outside of her hospital room, his head in his hands, Leon couldn’t figure out what exactly he should do. Should he wait to hear exactly what’s wrong with her, or go back home and see the disappointed looks upon his family’s faces?
He had returned Charizard to his Pokeball a while ago, so he had no one to turn to for advice or even a finger in the right direction. Soon enough, a nurse walked out of her room and asked, “Champion Leon? Would you like to know what is wrong with her?”
“Yes!,” Leon said exasperatedly. The nurse gave him a weird look for a split second before looking over her clipboard and saying, “She currently has pretty severe hypothermia, and a lot of her internal organs are having trouble functioning properly. She also has large amount of cuts in her skin, so that will slow down her recovery process as well.”
“We aren’t exactly sure how she sustained all of those cuts, but it is suspected that she was swimming in the ocean for several hours before the Lapras you were telling us about found her and swam her to shore,” the nurse finishes.
Leon hesitates before asking, “Could you call me or something when she manages to wake up?” The nurse nods and answers, “Since we can’t find any record of her in our system, you’re her ‘family’ contact. So you’ll be made aware of anything that is happening with her.”
Leon nods gratefully, before pulling out his Rotom Phone to dial Hop. After ringing for a minute, it goes straight to Hop’s voicemail and Leon immediately knows that Hop has already fallen asleep.
And so, he sits back down on the bench outside of the girl’s waiting room, and doesn’t even notice as he immediately dozes off, falling right into a deep sleep.

There daily I wander as noon rises high,
This is how Raihan becomes Bede’s brother.
Title from Robert Burns’ “Afton Water”
*
Raihan isn’t used to watching the finals from the sidelines.
He tries to relax in his league-assigned seat, still feeling like any moment now someone will come to ask why he’s not on the pitch.
With every word the commentator says, the sense of wrongness only grows stronger. It should be him out there. It should be him planting his feet into the grass, summoning sandstorms and roaring at his opponent. For the past eight seasons, it has been him in that position, him on the pitch, him and Leon —
“Let's give a round of applause for Galar’s beloved champion, Gloria!”
The earth orbits around a new sun now.
“And on the other side of the pitch, the elite gym leader, the champion’s rival himself—”
Raihan—
“— Bede!”
Raihan sighs, not entirely sure what he’s feeling.
“A bit of sadness,” a voice says, “mixed with some excitement at seeing what these young ones can do. And some pride, too, perhaps.”
Raihan blinks, but he’s had enough experience with Opal to not jump at her sudden appearances.
“Why are you here? I thought you retired.”
“I did!” Opal hums happily. “Now I’m getting to enjoy my retirement — and what grandparent wouldn’t want the chance to see their grandchild battling the champion?”
Bede’s been training under her for what, three months? She jumped into the fairy godmother role pretty quick, didn’t she.
Opal says, “Perhaps it was a bit reckless of me to declare him my successor so quickly… But sometimes you can look at a person and know that you were meant to help them.”
On the pitch, Bede’s Rapidash lands a critical hit. Bede grins. Gloria grins. Raihan is abruptly reminded of his sixth battle against Leon, the first time he’d tried using a weather team. Leon won, of course, but instead of the usual sportsmanlike handshake, he’d given Raihan a full-bodied hug. After all, being the champion’s rival meant he was the champion’s friend, too.
Opal says, “Still, I do worry about whether I can properly care for him. I’m willing to listen to any troubles he has, of course, but he is a young boy, after all. He may not feel comfortable sharing everything with an old woman like me. If he had an older brother, perhaps...”
She looks at him meaningfully.
Raihan knows better than to offer his help; if the fairy queen wants a favor from him, she has to be direct about it.
But Opal doesn’t ask. She seems to feel like she’s said everything that needs to be said, and she merely sits back and watches the match.
The battle ends.
Gloria does not hug Bede.
*
Raihan pays more attention to Bede after that.
He would watch Bede’s matches anyway, because it’s only a matter of time before they’d have to face each other in a ranking tournament, but now Raihan’s observing the kid himself instead of just his battle style.
Bede’s history is no secret. During his challenge, the league milked the scrappy-orphan angle for all it was worth. A kid who came from nothing, fighting to earn a place in the world… It tugs at the heartstrings. Theoretically, anyway. While the PR people tried to spin Bede’s proud demeanor as a defense mechanism, a lot of the fans found challenger Bede unbearably smug.
Raihan grew up in a loving upper-class family with both parents and two sisters, so he doesn’t have family issues as an excuse. As a challenger, he’d been smug because he really thought he was all that. Well. He still is kinda cocky, and he still sorta is all that. Because the fans like it, because there’s nothing quite so satisfying as seeing a cocky bastard get taken down a peg or two.
The fans won’t get to see Raihan taken down a peg anymore. Sure, he’ll still be losing, to Gloria and Melony and who knows, maybe Bede too -- but that mixture of pride and humiliation is reserved for Leon and Leon only.
But Leon isn't the champion anymore.
Gloria seems to like battling Bede. Bede seems to like battling her. Their inexperience is obvious, though. Their battles seem to be fun and challenging for both of them, which is the important thing, but they haven’t quite gotten the hang of the performance part yet.
If he had an older brother, perhaps…
Is it an insult, that Opal would be so transparent in what she wants from Raihan? Or is it a show of respect, a way of saying that she’s not going to try to manipulate him? But even transparent manipulation is manipulation all the same…
Raihan leans back, putting a hand over his mouth in thought. He’s not the champion’s rival anymore. That was his place in Galar, his place in the league. He may still be the strongest gym leader, but the role feels empty now that Leon and Piers are gone.
Would the role be just as fulfilling if he became the big brother to the younger gym leaders?
He can try.
*
The next time Raihan sees Bede, it’s at one of the champion’s invite-only tournaments.
The champion has invited all her rivals, and between the battles the four of them stick together in the same corner. Raihan’s curious what they’re talking about, of course, but he gives them space. None of them are his little siblings, after all.
When the tournament finishes (with the champion victorious, naturally), Raihan walks out with the other participants.
Leon and Piers are waiting in the lobby. Raihan gives them a wave and they wave back, but it’s obvious they’re not there for him.
“Lee!”
Hop gives a running jump into his brother’s arms. Marnie has a more dignified motion as she walks toward Piers, but Raihan sees the way her mouth curls up at the corners. The little champion gives a wave goodbye to her rivals; she probably has some business to attend to in another city.
That leaves Bede as the list of the four, looking vaguely upset but not saying anything about it.
So Raihan does. “Hey, Leon, Piers. Whaddya say we take our little sibs to get something to eat? They fought hard, they deserve it. My treat.”
Piers raised his visible eyebrow, but he nods.
It’s Leon, always perceptive, that asks: “Our siblings?”
“Yep!” Raihan looks to Bede, reaching out a hand in invitation. “Bede, can you do me a favor and be my little bro for the afternoon? Leon’s not in the league anymore, but I still have to beat him in something.”
Bede gives him a look of offended confusion. Then he looks toward Leon and Hop.
Raihan sees Hop’s face, how he wears the same expression Leon does when the sponsors force him to drink chia juice.
Raihan sees Bede’s expression change, how his frown slowly turns into a knife cat smile.
Bede nods, reaching out and holding Raihan by the wrist. “I would love to.”
*
They go to McDucklett’s, one of the few places where people don’t look twice at a bunch of regional celebrities sitting down to eat.
Raihan’s the only one who orders a full meal. Leon and Piers get salads, the tossers. Hop and Marnie both want kids meals, with the potential tiny plush toy of a gym leader’s signature Pokémon. And Bede…
Bede’s staring at the menu, seemingly overwhelmed by all the choices. Has he really never been in a McDucklett’s before?
Oh. No, he probably hasn’t. Between the orphanage and Rose, fast food is probably the last kind of food he’s ever had the chance to try.
“Why don’t I get you some nuggets?” Raihan suggests.
Bede nods vigorously.
Raihan orders him a kids meal as well, and quietly asks the employee for a set of utensils to go with it.
While the grownups are eating their meals, the kids start by opening their toys. Hop has a tiny version of Milo’s Appletun, while Marnie gets Melony’s Lapras. By some coincidence or luck or fairy magic, Bede’s toy is an Alcremie.
He picks it up with something like reverence, lightly tracing its frosting swirls with one finger. He looks around the table, probably trying to find someplace to set it down, then puts it in his lap.
With the toys out of the way, Bede pulls out his box of nuggets. He stares at them as though unsure how they’re supposed to be eaten.
Raihan is torn between laughing at the kid’s hesitation and feeling sorry for him. Eventually, the latter wins out.
He swallows the bite of his burger and says, “There should be a knife and fork in there if you need ‘em. I know they’ve got a weird texture, but they’re pretty good.”
Bede follows his directions, spearing a nugget and taking a delicate bite.
Hop snorts. Raihan glares at him and is gratified to see Leon is giving an identical look. Big brother instincts.
The rest of the meal passes with minimal drama. Bede seems satisfied with nuggets and apple slices. That’s good. Raihan doesn’t want to imagine what would happen if Opal found out he’d sent Bede home hungry.
After the other pairs say their goodbyes and head out, Bede turns to Raihan and asks, “Can you watch Alcremie while I wash my hands?”
“Sure.”
Bede sets the doll on a dry spot on the table. “I know your hands are greasy, so don’t touch her. Just make sure nobody else takes her.”
“I got it, don’t worry.”
Bede heads to the restroom. Raihan examines the toy Alcremie, leaning in close to look in its sewn-on eyes.
“Is this what you wanted, Opal?” he asks. “Am I doing well?”
The Alcremie only stares back. It has a knowing smile on its face.
*
When Bede comes back, he insists that Raihan wash his hands, too. Raihan thought it was a euphemism, but no, apparently the kid really doesn’t like the idea of greasy fingers.
After that, he’s ready to go home. Raihan offers to at least walk him back to the station. Bede accepts without protest.
It’s when they’re halfway there that he says, with forced aloofness, “I know you’re only doing all of this because Opal told you to.”
“What?”
“Don’t lie to me. She told you I needed a big brother, right? She told me the same thing. Well, I don’t need anybody. I’m a gym leader now. I’ll be fine even when Opal… even when she d…”
And, oh shit, that is not something Raihan even thought of when wondering why Opal would ask him for this. He’s stunned speechless for a moment, mouth opening and closing as he tries to say something reassuring but not patronizing.
At last he says, “I mean… even if she did ask me, I asked you along ‘cause I wanted to. You’re going to be around for a while, right? It’s just smart to try to get on your good side.”
Bede doesn’t say anything to that.
Raihan continues: “And if I may — I gotta say, I see a lot of myself in you. The elite gym leader who rivals the champion? That’s been my life since I was sixteen. If there’s anyone who’ll beat Gloria, it’ll be you.”
He knows the counter the moment he says it, already imagining Bede saying the way you beat Leon? with a sneer on his face.
But to his surprise, Bede does not say that. He only tilts his head, his expression somewhere between flattered and confused.
Then he says, “If you want to stay on my ‘good side,’ you should take me to McDucklett’s again sometime.”
*
When they reach Ballonlea, Opal is waiting. She greets them with a smile, one long-nailed finger beckoning them in.

There’s Persian and Mudsdale, Donphan and Huntail. Sandygast, Nosepass, Frosslass, Lapras! I love to say the Pokémon, but here’s the catch. Saying them all kinda seems Farfetch'd! Let me Axew a question? Want to help me out? It’s time to Throh in more names! Come on give me a shout! *perfect yell of 200 Pokémon.* Those Pokémon are Tentacool! *another perfect yell of 200 Pokémon.* And those Pokémon are trash! Combee my friend, I’ve got more to say. And if we Diglett-le deeper, we can learn today! So why not get Comfey, Don’t be Krabby or blue! Here are some lessons, and I Rotom for you. If you Muk around in class, you’ll be distraught! Don’t Bidoof-us, just study a lot! If you’re Slaking in school, you’ll drop out sooner! And abstinence is key, or you’ll get a Mime Jr. Swanna grab some candy for a sweet treat? Amaura-mazing snack is Pichu can eat! Bewear of Shiftry strangers who offer you hugs. Don’t stick forks into Eelectrik plugs. Wear a Shelmet when you Rhydon bikes. Keep a well-stocked Bagon extra long hikes! Make sure to stay away from that Ferroseed. And that’s just one name people have for weed! There’s Pansage, and Slowbro, Oddish, and Bonsly. Tropius, Seedot, Nuzleaf, and Stunky! And Blissey, Loudred, Dewgong and Goodra. Bounsweet, Bayleef, Hypno, and Munna! You’ll be Drowzee if you Swellow that Tangrowth smoke. Also Koffing and Weezing, hey, you might Machoke! So if someone says, “Hey, want some dank Lombre?” Look ‘em Dedenne the eye, and say NO WAY! I tell you Natu do drugs, but if someone’s smoking Treecko, does that make them a bad person? Definitely no! Don’t mean to carr-Yanma point in this verse is that alienating drug users makes things worse! Don’t lock someone up if they take a Hitmonchan. And criminalizing addicts is a really bad plan. Big pharma is the root of our country’s problem with opiate addiction. Golem. Gastly, Horsea, Chansey, Burmy. Clefairy, Mankey, Klefki, Goomy. Hoo! Rapping’s hard, let me catch my breath. Might as well check how many we’ve got left! There’s less than 150 left. Can I really do this? I used to have this dream. Back when I was a child. I’d make the PokéRap listenable. And everybody called me reckless and wild. But I never gave up. I kept at it everyday. And with Pikachu beside me and my 'dex to guide me, I knew that there’d be a way. To ignore all of the naysayers. I’d need a thicker skin than Metapod. Wynaut leave my comfort zone, jump in the Unown. Maybe someday everyone will applaud. It’s Absol-utely worth taking a risk. Plusle make a few friends as I try. Seaking how to be strong as I Raichu a song. Though I still don’t know where to put Mr. Mime. But who cares if I couldn’t find a good place to put Togedemaru, Pyukumuku, Mawile, Sceptile, Weavile, Sandile, Helioptile, Leafeon, Gengar, Malamar, Marshtomp, Chatot, Simipour, Ferrothorn, Toxicroak, Minccino, Cinccino, Azumarill, Tranquill, Excadrill, Marill, Beedrill. And Togetic, Basculin, Gigalith, Crabominable, Kingdra, Ambipom, Gastrodon, Bastiodon, Hippowdon, Vivillon, Bisharp, Liepard, Dunsparce, Aipom, Slakoth, Ralts, Dustox. I still found a way to put ‘em in there! No matter the Scizor the scope of the task. I don’t need a Magikarp-et ride. I’Machamp-ion, hero, there’s nothing to Fearow. My true power comes from inside. And that brings us all of the way to the top. I’ve said every name I can say. I’ll let my body confess the names that I can’t express. Yes it’s time for the DREAM BALLET! COME ON! But there’s one Pokemon, my own holy grail. That I gave Kevin Punt, I hope that bastard’s in jail. 'Cause of all Tangelas, Terry is the apex. And I gave him up for my 'dex. When you love Terry terribly, and then Terry is gone. What’s the point of having every other Pokemon? There’s a wound in my heart that I can’t get rid of. How can I find joy without my tangly boy? Why catch them all if you can’t keep the ones that you love? Terry! Oh Terry…

Pokémon FireRed Nuzlocke [Part 9]
Through the power of no grinding, we’ve earned all eight badges. All that’s left is Victory Road and the Elite Four.
Er.
Sort of.
Tumblr media
My team might need some moveset adjustment.
Tumblr media
I need my money for Full Restores.
So.
Let me just say, before all the fun is sucked out of me with this, that I love that Erika’s city has a gambling hall, a massive mall, and a Gym made of rainbows. Erika as a stoner lesbian with no fucks to give is the funniest headcanon I’ve had while playing these games, and I feel like there’s more evidence for than against.
-cue all the hidden Pokemon lore that says I am wrong-
-that I assume exists but refuse to look up-
I have fifty coins from talking to people and looking on the floor.
Five minutes later, I have fifty-two.
I miss Voltorb Flip.
...I’m switching machines. That always works, right?
Tumblr media
Yaaaay.
4000 coins buys Thunderbolt. Shadow Ball is 4500. I had wanted that for Po. Seemed like a useful thing.
Sigh. Okay, let’s see the damage.
Tumblr media
That’s.
Shit.
Tumblr media
DON’T GAMBLE, KIDS.
Now we go back to Viridian and make our way to the Pokemon League.
With the unstoppable power of an Electrode who knows Thunderbolt.
Do you see this going well? Because I don’t.
Hey, the gate area is a new route. And it has grass.
But Serebii says I’ve caught everything I can here. Saddening.
Tumblr media
Okay then. Now we get to the fun part. I think Sprinkle goes in front. Actually, no. Allenby goes in front. Sprinkle’s slow enough that running from wild pokemon will probably be an issue.
First Victory Road encounter! Something I can catch! It’s a Machop! Her name can be Mura.
Tumblr media
Help, though. I don’t remember what this thing is or if it matters.
Oh! I think I know. It’s time for rock puzzles.
I Max Repelled a level 46 Onix into existence. This feels like a really helpful trick for this run. Noted for the future.
First fight of Victory Road! Cooltrainer Naomi! She opens with a level 42 Persian. Ponyta next. Sprinkle food. Rapidash. Similar. Vulpix. This is a good Sprinkle trainer. Ninetales. Fight won, exp for Sprinkle gained.
Tumblr media
Oh, first/third gen.
Cooltrainer Rolando is up next. He has a level 42 Raticate. Oooh, a Charizard. Zaft or Sprinkle, Zaft or Sprinkle... Zaft. Sprinkle’s going to have a lot of things to eat. Zaft is more specialized. Sprinkle can have the Charmeleon, though. Ivysaur goes to Heero. Wartortle brings us back to Zaft. Win get.
Up a ladder, Black Belt Daisuke is waiting. He has a level 43 Machoke. Machop. Another Machoke, which Heero has to take for safety reasons. Won, and on we go.
Juggler Gregory only has one pokemon. It is a level 48 Mr. Mime. Po, could you just. Yeah, that.
I’m running around picking up all the items I can. I’m picking up TMs that I’ll probably never use, and TMs like Dragon Claw. That one, I can’t see not teaching something.
But something that keeps--I won’t say it’s distracting me, because I’ve spent this whole run very distracted by multitasking this with other stuff--occupying my thoughts is how much more of a climb this Victory Road feels.
Maybe it’s because this is the Victory Road of my childhood, and some impressions are glued in, but it’s all way more intimidating. It feels like an unknown, even though if you’ve played any of these games all the way through you know what’s coming.
I think even if part of it is just me being overly nostalgic, the way the technology’s evolved has something to do with it. This is a 2D experience, and with the sizing, everything feels way more open. One screencap shows you a lot more of the area than one would from later gens.
Only because it does that, the mazes and caves and such are designed with way more open space. When things are bigger, the paths can be more direct while taking the same amount of time to figure out. You see so much more in the early games, so it has to be less helpful. The result is that the world feels much larger and more uncertain. The world is a big place. It doesn’t feel designed for a person. It feels like you’ve been dropped into it.
It’s a nice feeling, and as much as I adore later gens, I don’t think any of them click with that on the same level.
Tumblr media
Level 44 Persian opening things up. Allenby up front has been a good decision. Golduck next, so Zaft gets something to do. And that’s that.
Juggler Nelson. What’ve you got. A level 41 Drowzee. Po. Hypno. Kadabra, and I think I’ll send in Sprinkle for that. Same with the second one. Game over, Nelson.
Something I think would be cool is if trainers disappeared after you beat them. It would be a pain for people who use things like Vs. Seeker, but it would be a neat effect. We get magic teleportation powers when we lose, let the NPCs have a shot.
Cooltrainer George is guarding an item. He opens with an Exeggutor, so Heero swoops in to save Allenby. ... Heero suffers paralysis and a critical hit for her trouble, and frankly, ow. Electrode is next, so Po’s in. Sandslash means Sprinkle. Cloyster goes to Zaft. Arcanine, and we’re back to Sprinkle.
George was guarding a Max Revive. Ha.
Tumblr media
This place is too big. If I have to bring the only boulder I’ve seen on this floor all the way over here, I riot.
Pokemaniac Dawson is our next opponent. He has a level 40 Charmeleon. As a side, Rock Slide hits enough when Allenby uses it to make me very wary of the future. My accuracy with that usually sucks. Lapras is next, so let’s give Zaft a crack. Zaft doesn’t quite one-shot it, but it uses Rain Dance, so all is forgiven. Lickitung brings Allenby back out. And we win. Yay.
Cooltrainer Alexa is up. I will try not to make jokes about your name. First out, a level 42 Clefairy. Tear it up, Allenby. Dewgong goes to Zaft. Jigglypuff brings Allenby back out. Persian. Chansey.
Sheesh. I think after this I need to go back to the Pokemon Center (walking, nothing in my party knows Fly) just so I get everything’s PP up. You do not waste PP items pre-Elite Four.
The boulder I said I’d riot over is a thing. I choose to peacefully restrain myself.
Ugh. And I can’t quite make myself go back to the Pokemon Center. Allenby might have to stop being in front, but that’s not too big a deal, and she doesn’t have to switch off yet.
Tumblr media
Rude.
Cool Trainer Caroline. She starts with a level 42 Bellsprout, which makes me think Heero’s going to get a status debuff when she swaps in. But plot twist, Stun Spore misses. Good. Weepinbell. Victreebell. Parasect. Gotta say, the theme is really helping me here. Paras.
Tumblr media
Good, you weren’t nice to me.
Cooltrainer Colby has slightly better manners. As well as a Kingler. Uh. Allenby deals with it because the things I can swap in make me anxious against a Kingler. For reasons of who knows why. Poliwhirl brings out Zaft. Zaft finally gets rid of Sonicboom because Swift can’t miss. Never mind that both things are useless for an Electrode.
Tentacruel comes out next, and you know what, that’s great for an Electrode. So is a Seadra. Blastoise.
Zaft is so overspecialized in Speed it makes me sad. I’m sorry, Zaft. I thought you learned Electro Ball. I thought it existed in this generation.
Back to boulder puzzles. Dropping rocks down holes.
It isn’t really a puzzle. It’s busywork. But it’s trying its best or something.
Tumblr media
Oh. This might be not fun.
Allenby and Heero, you’re my dream team. Cool Couple Ray & Tyra with their level 45 Nidoqueen and Nidoking can’t possibly--okay you know what, Po and Sprinkle are coming out for this, sorry guys. The Leftovers duo has this.
...Don’t let Sprinkle’s paralysis confuse the issue.
...The important thing is that they won, let’s not talk about it further.
...Or how I wasted recovery items thinking the guy in front of the exit was another trainer.
Tumblr media
WE MADE IT.
I have 41904 money stuff. Let’s see how many Full Restores that buys.
Thirteen.
But what if... I sold all my Revives and Rare Candy and Nuggets.
...Oh. I already sold the Nuggets.
Hey! Seven more Full Restores! I win!
And.
I guess that’s it, isn’t it? We’re out of things to do. Uh. But TMs. Po learns Earthquake at the expense of Snore. Heero trades Wing Attack for Aerial Ace because I’m shy of Fly and Aerial Ace doesn’t miss.
There are some other things I want to play with (Toxic, Dragon Claw, maybe Return), but those are for if we live through the first few fights. For now, we’re done. We’ve spent all the money we can.
Tumblr media
Our team.
(Tarle, please do no ask why you’re there, you do not want to know, and more importantly, I do not want to tell you.)
Held items aren’t as common in this gen, so Po and Sprinkle have Leftovers, Zaft has a Sitrus Berry, and Heero and Allenby are given Orans. That division is because I think Heero and Allenby are more likely to meet up things that are close to being survivable with a nudge. Zaft is.
Zaft, try to live. I’ll understand if you can’t, but try.
-deep breath-
LET’S DO THIS.
Tumblr media
The terror mounts.
As the music does.
(Lorelei, no spellchecker thinks your name is spelled weird, but I kind of do.)
A level 52 Dewgong is out first. In the interest of gulping and accepting the OHKO future I foresaw is probably not happening, Zaft is going to use Light Screen as a first move. The Dewgong uses Ice Beam, but Zaft is in the green. Zaft’s Thunderbolt does a perfect orange that should keep the Dewgong from being healed. It uses Safeguard. Zaft throws out another Thunderbolt, and...?
Lorelei’s out one Dewgong. Cloyster’s next, and Zaft stays in. Cloyster is level 51. Zaft downs it in one hit!
A level 52 Slowbro is next. It uses Amnesia after Zaft’s Thunderbolt takes out about 3/4 of health. And Light Screen wears off. Zaft uses Thunderbolt again because a super tanky Slowbro is not the ideal I want in my life, and Zaft manages the kill.
Lapras is up next. It’s level 54. Zaft needs to use Light Screen again in case Zaft is not enough for this, so we don’t have to immediately see evidence of the Lapras’ unbreachable bulk. It uses Surf.
Tumblr media
Oh.
My heart places.
Allenby goes out. Uses Brick Break. It takes out half the Lapras’ health, and Lapras uses Confuse Ray. Allenby uses Cross Chop (through the confusion, good girl) because Lapras had a Sitrus Berry.
The Lapras falls, and a Jynx is next.
Heero.
Heero uses Flamethrower, Jynx is in the red and her Lovely Kiss misses. Lorelei heals it up, Heero uses Flamethrower again, Light screen wears off, and next turn. Heero uses Flamethrower again.
Tumblr media
Hm.
Tumblr media
Hm.
Sorry, Zaft.
Zaft’s Sitrus Berry goes to Allenby. And uh. Uh. We continue on.
Tumblr media
Allenby, let’s make some noise.
Bruno sends out a level 51 Onix. Brick Break takes it to orange, and it uses Rock Tomb. It takes 10hp off Allenby, and her Speed falls. Another Brick Break, and Onix is down. The next Onix is level 54. For the heck of it, I see what Seismic Toss does.
Ah. But this Onix is faster, and uses Earthquake. Allenby at 81hp, still green. Onix uses Earthquake again, Allenby’s at 27hp, Allenby tries for Cross Chop and it misses, and she eats her Sitrus Berry.
Playing the odds, I set Allenby for another Cross Chop. The next Earthquake takes her down to 8hp, but this Cross Chop hits.
Hitmonchan is next, and Heero has to fight it.
This is where Fly would come in handy. I forgot the level differential. Oh well.
Heero uses Aerial Ace. Heero gets a critical hit, and Heero, I swear I could kiss you, you beautiful Charizard.
Machamp is next. All of my stress. I’m pretty damn sure it knows a Rock move, but the only thing in my party who wouldn’t have a problem with that is Allenby. With 8hp. We are not yet at the stage of using Tarle, so Heero stays in.
Level 56 Machamp. Level 49 Charizard.
Heero’s still faster, so Aerial Ace goes first.
Tumblr media
Oh dear.
Tumblr media
OH DEAR.
Po. Po. Po. I don’t think it can kill you in one hit.
Its Rock Tomb misses, so it probably has Vital Spirit, so I don’t want to waste a Yawn. Po, we’re using you to heal folks up. Hyper Potion used on Allenby. Machamp uses Cross Chop, but misses. Hyper Potion used on Heero. Next Cross Chop hits.
Tumblr media
Okay, so I no longer have Po. New (probably bad) plan.
Sprinkle comes out.
Machamp uses Bulk Up, which feels unnecessary. Sprinkle uses Perish Song.
Tumblr media
I’m about to lose, aren’t I?
Allenby goes out. Uses Seismic Toss.
Tumblr media
Look, I genuinely wish I could feel bad about this, but it’s hard to when I think about what’s waiting for me after this comes to a close.
Heero’s last.
...Not actually, but basically.
Machamp is swapped out for Hitmonlee because Perish Song. Heero’s Aerial Ace takes it to orange. Then the Machamp is back. Aerial Ace puts it in red, and then Rock Tomb puts Heero dead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somehow, this feels more cruel than what Tarle was initially here for.
lol at Bruno using a Full Restore.
Tumblr media
WHEN THINGS ARE EXCESSIVE.
Tumblr media
Yeah.
Tumblr media
Just say they’re dead.
Because they’re dead.
As dead as this run.
So, what did we learn?
Did we learn that Fly is a good thing to have? Did we learn that being overly paranoid about accuracy stats to the point that you limit your pokemon’s choices is a bad trait? Did we? Did we????/???
Tumblr media
Did we learn anything?
Yes, actually.
We learned that me obsessively marking down every single fight in this game had good consequences for future me after all.
We also learned that Electro Ball does not exist in this gen.
We also learned that I have sincere difficulty getting choked up over things dying when it’s very obvious how it’s all about to go down.
We also learned that when using a Gundam theme for nicknames, it’s really frustrating to have a primarily female team.
So, uh.
Tumblr media
MY TEAM AS WE GET READY FOR ROUND TWO.
Okay, no, no, that’s not how we’re doing this. It’s actually much, much worse. So much worse.
Before we get to that, a few words to commemorate the fallen.
.
.
.
You were all amazing, and in any regular run, I’d be proud to have any of you as an ace of the team. You brought us all the way to the Elite Four, and you shone while doing it. I am so proud. Zaft, you nearly took out an entire Elite Four member all by yourself. You did so good, even though I horrifically hampered your stats by focusing all your EVs on Speed for a move you could never have.
Po. Sprinkle. You’re the wonder children. I didn’t think I’d ever have the chance to have you.
Tarle.
I’m sorry for bringing you into the Elite Four with the intent of killing you off so that something else could get healing maybe. I feel slightly bad about it. Thank you for teaching me the wonderful HMs Krabby can learn.
Allenby. Heero.
You were the best.
And now...
Tumblr media
Goodbye.
Tumblr media
ROUND TWO, FUCKERS. LET’S GO.
Tumblr media
This text is so slow, take me back.
Tumblr media
In honor of the teammate who was left behind.
Tumblr media
I get so tired of using “rival” instead of a name just so I’m sure it’s obvious who I’m talking about. I’m cutting that part out this time. Gary is Gary is Gary.
This time, my ID number says..... .
Tumblr media
-war flashbacks-
Bulbapedia says 4-6 is Fire. Yoooo.
O-okay.
Tumblr media
WOULD YOU THINK ABOUT HOW HARD ON QUATRE THIS IS FOR FIVE SECONDS.
Domon.
Welcome.
You beat up Gary’s Squirtle, so you get to stay.
Tumblr media
Hardy is a good thing to be.
Yosh. Time to speed through the fetch quest, get poke balls, and find out if Domon is going to take on Brock all on his lonesome. Gooooood times.
I need to come up with a new naming theme for this run, possibly. That’s one of the problems with doing this. I will eventually run out of nicknames. Nicknames are not anything near a specialty of mine.
Poke Ball get. What could our first second pokemon be this time????
Tumblr media
I can’t remember if this happened last time. I’m too lazy to search my blog and check. This one’s name is Neal.
Route 1: Neal (Rattata)
(The above is to try to make remembering what I caught where easier. Will it work? Unlikely)
Oh, before anything else, I’m going to buy Antidotes. I’ve learned from my first time trying this.
Tumblr media
Now we face one of our worst challenges. Will Domon be making his way to Brock alone, or will he have help?
Tumblr media
Level 2.
Hm.
Route 22: Trowa (Mankey)
Hm.
I vote I find out how bad this can be with just Domon at the helm. Do you know why?
Because I am stubborn and refuse to use the same team each time. There will be some similarities I’m sure, but Trowa’s level 2. no. give me something I can work with, then we’ll talk.
Tumblr media
Route 2 doesn’t want me to be happy.
Route 2: Cashew (Caterpie)
Viridian Forest: Lima (Weedle)
Lima got a critical hit and poisoned Domon. Like a jerk. So off we walk to the Pokemon Center, after using an Antidote so we don’t die on the way. Classic pre-Brock.
Domon doesn’t even have Ember yet. This is going to be maybe not much fun. But I think finding out just where Charmander ends up with this kind of start with these rules could help in the future. Or lead to restarting sooner.
Oh good, Ember at 7. Yay.
I’m not going to be going nearly as indepth with what I’m doing this time around. If you’ve made it this far, you’ve read it before. I’ll note when something interesting happens, but we’re trying to make this fast. Elite Four is where the run falls apart. Everything else was pretty okay. The quicker we get back to the tension, the better.
The end of Viridian Forest reached, all trainers down. Domon is level 12.
Now we walk all the way back through the forest to go beat up (?) our rival.
So much walking. I long for my Running Shoes.
Tumblr media
This. Might be over faster than I want.
Domon eats the Pidgey and hits level 13. And learns Metal Claw! There’s hope, folks! !!! The Squirtle isn’t using a Water move! More hope!!!!!!!!!
Victory!
Domon versus Brock, who will be the champion?!?!?!
Only I have to beat the light-year kid first.
Domon does! Good boy!
...This makes me miss Heero.
Domon is also now level 14 heading into Brock.
Tumblr media
Let’s do this.
Level 12 Geodude? Deceased.
Level 14 Onix? Um.
Tumblr media
-whispers-  my son
I’m gonna go ahead and be a terrible person here. Trowa, buddy. Go in while we heal Domon.
Trowa dies. Oh well.
Cashew!
Cashew dies.
But Domon got healing.
So now we wait and hope that Ember burns, right? Right.
It does not.
Tumblr media
Welp, Domon’s dead.
Neal follows his lead.
Tumblr media
...
There’s no way, right?
.
.
Yep, Lima’s dead, too.
Tumblr media
Quatre, stop defending corpses.
Okay, what did we learn this round?
We learned that unless I get lucky on the burn, I probably do not want my Charmander to be all alone against Brock.
Learning is magic.
But I feel like we’ve done enough learning for now, so we’re going to stop here, and the next part will, once again, begin with a new team! Are we excited????
No.
No, we are not. This was a terrible idea.
In conclusion, ban Rock Tomb.

Translation Time! - “Bye Bye, Psyduck!”
DISCLAIMER: These translations come from a Facebook group that has posted clips of the original Japanese versions of certain episodes with French subtitles. I am not fluent in French, but between what I do know and research aides, I’m moderately confident in these translations; any spots I feel particularly troubled by will be noted. While the subtitles I’m using were written for the Japanese version of these episodes, that still means that this is a translation of the Japanese version by way of another language.
With all that said - let’s back track a bit and look at a few key scenes from “Bye Bye, Psyduck!”
SCENE: Tracey teases Misty.
English:
MISTY: No sign of Psyduck? POKEMON: (Shake heads, Pikachu looks sad, Togepi’s...cheering, the little sadist.) ASH: Don’t feel bad - you all did the best you could. Lapras, take a rest. Besides, it can’t be this easy to get rid of Psyduck. MISTY: WHAT!? Ash, we can’t stop looking! We have to find Psyduck! ASH: Well, this is a big switch, Misty. Since when did you start worrying so much about Psyduck? MISTY: Wha!? I’m not worried - it’s, uh... TRACEY: It’s love. ASH/MISTY: LOVE!? TRACEY: I think you hide your feelings. I think Psyduck is your favorite Pokemon. MISTY: NO WAY!
Original:
KASUMI: So, have you seen Koduck? POKEMON: (Shake heads, Pikachu looks sad, Togepi's...cheering, the little sadist.) SATOSHI: Don't blame yourselves for that. Return, Laplace! (To Pikachu) Don't worry. You didn't do anything wrong. KASUMI: Wait a minute! You're saying that Psyduck did something wrong!? SATOSHI: Not at all. But it's rare to see you so worried about Koduck, Kasumi. KASUMI: I...I am not... KENJI: It's love. SATOSHI/KASUMI: LOVE!? KENJI: It's been a while since I thought about it, but I'm sure that you think it's cute. KASUMI: HEY!
ANY DIFFERENCES? Ash is less insensitive about Psyduck being missing in the original, and while Tracey still teases Misty about loving Psyduck, he doesn’t claim that Psyduck is her favorite Pokemon. (SIDE NOTE: Tracey’s smug, know-it-all attitude in this episode is very strange. As far as I can remember, he never acts like this again, and the only other time he touches on Misty secretly liking someone [Ash], he’s polite and pleasant about it. On the other hand, this is one of the only times Tracey seemed to show any strong personality traits IMO, so...)
“SCENE:” Pre-battle exchange between Ash and Misty.
English:
ASH: You haven’t battled in a while - you sure you remember how? MISTY: Just you watch and see!
Original:
SATOSHI:  It's been a long time since you battled! I hope you haven't forgotten how! KASUMI:  You worried? Sit back and watch!
ANY DIFFERENCES? Not really, but I’d argue the original is a little more playful, at least in the VA performances.
SCENE: Misty’s the boss.
English:
MISTY: Hey, Ash! Hurry up and throw me Psyduck’s Poke Ball! ASH: Always bossing me around...which one’s Psyduck’s? MISTY: If you can’t tell, just throw me my backpack and I’ll find it! ASH: OK, here! MISTY: ASH! ASH: Sorry, Misty!
Original:
KASUMI: Satoshi! Throw me Koduck's Poke Ball! SATOSHI: Always giving orders...which one is Koduck's? KASUMI: If you can't find it, just throw me my bag! SATOSHI: OK, catch!
(The last two lines weren’t subtitled; I assume they’re Japanese expressions of frustration and apology.)
ANY DIFFERENCES? Not really.
SCENE: Misty finds Golduck.
English:
MISTY: YOU’RE HERE! And I can’t believe you’re mine! MARINA: What a great Golduck! I’ve never seen a Golduck as fine as that one! MISTY: Everybody used to yell and say all kinds of bad things about Psyduck, but nobody’s gonna say bad things now! Right, Golduck? ASH: The one who said most of those things was Misty. TRACEY: I told ya, it’s love! Obviously, Psyduck wanted to evolve for Misty because it loved her back. MISTY: I just know we’re gonna make a great team, Golduckee!
Original:
KASUMI: AWESOME! I've waited for you for so long, Golduck! TSUBAKI: It's too good, this Golduck! It's the most beautiful one I've ever seen! KASUMI: Oh? Everyone always criticized Koduck, but it's great that it's evolved! Right, Golduck? SATOSHI: Wasn't Kasumi was the first to criticize him? KENJI: That's the proof that it's really love! Koduck evolved to be loved by Kasumi!  (NOTE: I had a lot of trouble with this line; it’s very much an approximation.) KASUMI: You're 100 times better than I imagined!
ANY DIFFERENCES? Not really, unless you count Misty giving Golduck a nickname.
SCENE: Who does this Golduck remind you of?
English:
MISTY: OK, Golduck! Why don’t you take a rest in your Poke Ball? (Psyduck appears) But - my Psyduck’s a Golduck now! (Golduck runs off to flex for some girls) MARINA: That Golduck isn’t yours. It just likes to show off for girls. MISTY: It’s just a Pokemon version of Brock...
Original:
KASUMI: OK, Golduck - go back into your Pokeball!" (Koduck appears) H-H-Hold on! What does this mean!? (Golduck runs off to flex for some girls) TSUBAKI: Could it be possible...that he only likes to show off in front of girls? KASUMI: I feel like I've seen this somewhere before...
ANY DIFFERENCES? The call-back to Brock is more subtle in the original.
On to Johto next time!

If Alan had to assemble a new Alolan team (he'd keep Lizardon of course!)who do you think he'd pick?
Hmm, do you mean like if he did what Ash does at the start of each new saga and only brings Pikachu with him to new regions, thus filling the rest of his team with ‘mon exclusive to that region? Okay, I can do that … but to make it interesting, let’s make him a team from every region, and then I’ll assemble a final team of six out of those. =) Putting this beneath a cut, because it’s going to get long:
I’ll put the species name first, and then the nickname he’d use for them second. And of course, the first ‘mon for every single region is always going to be the same. ♥
Kanto:
Charizard — Lizardon (Fire/Flying; Fire/Dragon)
Lapras — Lace (Water/Ice)
Raichu — Rai (Electric)
Nidoking — King (Poison/Ground)
Gengar — Gar (Ghost/Poison)
Aerodactyl — Ptera (Rock/Flying)
Lizardon is self-explanatory. He goes with Alan to every single region and they’ll never, ever part.
Lace is a callback to my Immortality AU, where I think I ended up giving Alan a lapras (or maybe reunited Ash with his?) because I imagine that lapras are a species that live a very, very long time—that even they’re not technically dragons, the lifespan of the Loch Ness Monster in our own world lends to the idea that lapras would be long lasting. In any case, I could see a lapras on Alan’s team. Lapras are very strong and very durable, and we know that Alan does like pokémon that can be both tanks and very heavy hitters, which lapras are. In addition, though, lapras are known for having very gentle temperaments, and since Alan is so calm and gentle himself (when he isn’t given reason not to be), I feel that would fit well with a lapras. Lapras are very rare (they’re more easily captured in Johto on Fridays), but there could possibly be a situation where someone working in the Safari Zone gives him one to raise and take care of once they learn that he comes from the Kalosian Pokémon Lab, because they need someone to look after this particular lapras and raise her, and they know he’ll do a good job.
Rai, I figure, could have been inspired by Ash, in the sense that knowing Ash and his Pikachu made Alan take interest in the pikachu line and thus decide to raise one himself. Rai would be captured in Viridian Forest as a pikachu, raised up, and then eventually evolved with a Thunder Stone (not against his will, of course), because although Alan would be inspired by Pikachu, again, he does value reaching for one’s max potential in his team, and as we’ve seen in canon he does tend to evolve his pokémon all the way.
King, I feel, would be a little male nidoran who saw Alan in the Viridian area and decided, for some reason, that Alan was an Opponent and a Rival and an Enemy and that he would take him down. Unfortunately, nidoran are not very big or intimidating ‘mon, so this … did not go as planned for King … but Alan recognized and appreciated that fighting spirit and so offered King a place on his team. King originally accepted with the idea that once he gained enough strength he would defeat Alan once and for all, but ultimately he came to really love him as a trainer and became a very faithful member of the team. So, you know. Maybe he’ll eat someone else instead. (Spoiler: He’s not going to eat anyone, Alan won’t let that happen.)
Gar would be a temporary member of Alan’s team; he’d be released back to the Lavender Tower once Alan was ready to leave Kanto. I don’t really have a story behind this one, but gengar seems like the type of pokémon that Alan would find an interesting challenge to train, and the gengar that we meet in Lavender Tower in the anime is friendly enough so that he probably wouldn’t want to drain Alan of his life. (Probably.) So I think it’d probably be more of Alan offering to show Gar interesting things around Kanto, Gar agreeing, and then the two parting ways at the end of the journey.
Ptera is another callback to the Immortality AU, because I’m almost positive I gave Alan an aerodactyl there, because again, they’re basically immortal themselves, very long lasting. (And for Alan and Ash in the Immortality AU, that’s very important.) This wouldn’t necessarily be the same aerodactyl that tried to eat Ash—rather, maybe this one was revived from Old Amber, flipped out because it was fossilized and now it’s suddenly alive again, Alan helped calm it down, and so the scientists were like, “Please take this before it eats us.” Nonetheless, aerodactyl again seems like the type of pokémon Alan would train, so I could see him with one.
Those who know that Alan is my valiant dragon son are probably surprised that dragonite wasn’t included, but while I considered dragonite, in honesty I … have never been very fond of dragonite. Its design has never appealed to me, and while it is strong, I just kind of … eh. There are better dragons out there, in later gens.
(Also, I know you’re probably thinking, “Well, I’m still surprised you didn’t give him an arcanine!” but listen … the temptation was there … I do think Alan would be very good at training an arcanine and that he’d like it, but when thinking about his Future Permanent Team, I couldn’t bear to have him leave the arcanine behind, and I don’t want his team to be too similar to mine, so … a call had to be made. I had to restrain myself, despite how very real that temptation was.)
Johto:
Charizard — Lizardon (Fire/Flying; Fire/Dragon)
Noctowl — Yoru (Normal/Flying)
Tyranitar — Bangiras (Rock/Dark)
Houndoom — Soot (Dark/Fire)
Donphan — Don (Ground)
Mantine — Tine (Water/Flying)
Lizardon is self-explanatory, as always.
Yoru comes from my Fix-It of the team we see him with in the League, because it kills me that they gave him unfezant, of all pokémon, when you can’t even catch that in Kalos (but you can catch noctowl), and noctowl is far more fitting thematically. I think that Yoru (short for “Yorunozuku”) would bond with Alan very quickly as a hoothoot, and would evolve into a beautiful noctowl in short order.
Bangiras is that very same tyranitar we see him with in the League. I didn’t have any real issues with him having a tyranitar in canon, so there’s no reason not to stick with that choice now. Bangiras would be captured as a larvitar and would start out feeling a rivalry toward Lizardon (that is not reciprocated) because he would want to be Alan’s strongest and favorite, but that attitude would settle down over time. Whenever he’s in Kalos and/or otherwise around Bonnie, Bonnie likes to sing “Getta Ban Ban” because of his name.
Soot is … okay, listen. For those of you who have read Genesis, you’ll know that technically the first pokémon Alan ever had was a houndour puppy that he, at the tender age of five, named “Soot.” Alan didn’t actually catch this houndour, nor was he able to raise it, but he tried and he gave it a name and it remains a very important part of his past, because if he’d never tried to keep that houndour puppy, he never would have met (and been unofficially adopted by) Sycamore. So I’ve always entertained the idea that one day, Alan and Soot would be reunited. How Soot would get all the way to Johto from Kalos is anyone’s guess, but maybe Soot was actually captured by another trainer at some point, who then traded him away to someone in Johto, who then released him. It’s possible! In any case, Soot and Alan meet by “chance” (read: destiny) at one point in Johto, Soot recognizes Alan instantly, Alan realizes that Soot is Soot, and so he’s captured and raised up (probably captured as a houndour, still, just a fully grown one at this point, close to evolving but not quite there yet). The naming convention is off from the rest, but Alan named him Soot so long ago … he’s not going to change that now. Soot is very playful and, even as a full grown adult, likes to act like a baby and get belly rubs with his tongue lolling out of his mouth. Sometimes Alan still calls him “Sootie.” It’s hard not to.
Don doesn’t have a story behind her; I think a donphan just seems like the kind of pokémon that Alan would train, particularly since donphan can be tanks, can be fast (ROLLOUT), and are hard hitters (again, ROLLOUT). Also, I have a real soft spot for phanpy, so I like the idea of Alan raising one up to be a mighty donphan (albeit a mighty donphan that still thinks she’s the size of a phanpy).
Tine is partial bias to sea rays that I gained during my Japan vacation, and partial “I do think this would fit.” Again, no real story to this one; I just think it’d be interesting for Alan to raise a mantine and I think he’d enjoy and be good at it. Everyone was mantine surfing~
Again, the big surprise here might be that I left off kingdra, particularly since he has dragon clan heritage in Blackthron City (though if this is a canon compliant timeline, he might not know about that yet). But I didn’t want to give him two water-types, since water’s not really his thing so much, and I personally prefer mantine over kingdra. But don’t worry, there will be dragons to come in the future regions.
Hoenn:
Charizard — Lizardon (Fire/Flying; Fire/Dragon)
Flygon — Lye (Ground/Dragon)
Milotic — Milo (Water)
Absol — Sol (Dark)
Salamence — Bohmander (Dragon/Flying)
Metagross — Meta (Steel/Psychic)
Lizardon remains self-explanatory.
Lye would be captured as a trapinch, and perhaps got its name both because of its future final evolution, and also because it was very hot to the touch (due to being out in the desert) when Alan first met it, thus it burned him and made him think of how lye burns when it comes in contact with skin. In any case, even as a trapinch Lye always wanted to be off the ground, which makes Alan wonder sometimes if he should have named it Fly instead.
Milo is another call to the immortality AU, though it’s Ash that has a milotic in that one, rather than Alan. Nonetheless, milotic is a big pokémon that looks like a sea dragon, is very strong, and very much a tank as well, so it’s the type that he’d have on his team. Plus, I like the idea of him catching a feebas, and knowing that no matter how weak it is at the time, he can help it become stronger. And with time, he does.
Sol would be a healing, reclamation type pokémon for him. For those of who you have read Genesis (linked above), you’ll remember that the mayor of Isolé Village compared Alan to an absol in a derogatory way:
The mayor looked back at [Augustine], and her furious scowl was instantly replaced by an apologetic smile. “Oh, Professor Sycamore! I’m so sorry about all of this. I should have warned you to watch out for this one, but I didn’t think even he would … well.” She chuckled, but Augustine could hear an undercurrent of anger in it as she placed her hand on the boy’s head and shook him a little, her fingers gripping his hair far more roughly than Augustine had ruffled it back in the houndour den. “I should have known better! Alan here is like our own little absol—brings disaster wherever he goes!” She laughed again, the sound loud and aggressive.
That was years and years ago, but Alan has an eidetic memory and so he remembers everything that happened to him in that village: every punishment, every name he was ever called, and so forth. And as a result, given that he was always compared to absol and that it was meant to be a bad thing, seeing absol has always filled him with a very uncomfortable, anxious feeling. It’s not something he ever takes out on them, obviously, but seeing absol (or hearing the word “absol”) reminds him of those days back in Isolé, and he doesn’t like it. (Buneary sort of do as well, come to that, since they were always allowed to run around the village at will, but it doesn’t have the same tie to him as absol does.)
So in that sense, if he came across an absol in Hoenn, he wouldn’t want to capture it at first, but perhaps the absol would keep following him around because she knew that something bad was going to happen to him and wanted to prevent it. And after she helped save him from whatever disaster, it’d help him come to terms with things. Sycamore himself taught Alan that absol never bring disaster, and Alan knew that … and he also knows that he never really brought disaster, that the things he was blamed for weren’t really his fault … but sometimes it takes a while for the heart to catch up. And so he’d capture the absol, and name her Sol (meaning “sun” as well as being a play on her name), as a sort of healing / reclamation thing.
Bohmander would either be captured as a bagon, inspired by Zinnia and her salamence, particularly in my preferred scenario where a version of the Delta Episode is carried out post-XY(&Z), and Alan and Zinnia become quite acquainted with one another as a result. Boh is a bit smaller than the average salamence and is quite gentle, but he’s no less fierce in battle and everyone would do well to remember it.
Meta is the same metagross that Alan has in the League in canon, inspired by Steven and his metagross. If I remember correctly, the personality that I gave to Meta is that they are very young but also very desperate to prove themselves and be strong to make Alan proud. They struggle with self-esteem, but Alan always reminds them that he’s proud of their progress, and that helps a lot.
See? I told you there’d be more dragons.
Sinnoh:
Charizard — Lizardon (Fire/Flying; Fire/Dragon)
Mismagius — Mumargi (Ghost)
Lucario — Cario (Fighting/Steel)
Weavile — Manyula (Dark/Ice)
Mamoswine — Mammoo (Ice/Ground)
Gallade — Rei (Fighting/Psychic)
Lizardon is self-explanatory, as always.
I don’t really have a story for Mumargi, except that maybe Mumargi kept “accidentally” crossing paths with him as a misdreavous before he finally caught her. After he caught her she tried to wander off at every given opportunity, because she’s contrary like that.
Way back when the Flare Crisis was airing, and Alan did that amazing back handspring to avoid the spikes in the megalith, I came up with a headcanon that perhaps he studied martial arts under Maylene for a time while traveling through Sinnoh. Perhaps that headcanon could still come to light and that’s how he ends up with Cario, who was his sparring partner while studying with Maylene and who decided to travel with him when he left. (And now whenever he and Maylene encounter each other in public they have to spar immediately, as soon as they make eye contact, without explaining anything to anyone in the nearby vicinity. Those are the rules between martial arts sensei and student.)
Manyula is the same weavile we see him with in the League. Again, he chose a weavile there, I had no real issues with it, so why not keep it up? (Also, the Sinnoh ‘dex is hard enough to choose from without eliminating canon choices orz.) If I remember the characterization I gave her, she’s very mischievous and prideful and somewhat tsun in that she doesn’t like to play well with others … or at least, that’s what she pretends.
There’s no real story behind Mammoo other than I thought it’s the type of pokémon that would fit Alan’s battling style, and same for Rei.
Honestly, this one was really hard because I don’t like the majority of the Sinnoh ‘dex, and those I do like are already taken by members of Alan’s family (Sycamore has garchomp, Clemont has luxray), or just wouldn’t really fit his battling style (glaceon, leafeon, floatzel). So I struggled a lot with this one, I won’t lie.
Unova:
Charizard — Lizardon (Fire/Flying; Fire/Dragon)
Krookodile — Rook (Ground/Dark)
Zebstrika — Strike (Electric)
Beartic — Bear (Ice)
Chandelure — Lure (Ghost/Fire)
Bisharp — Sharp (Dark/Steel)
Lizardon is self-explanatory.
Rook seems like the type of pokémon Alan would train (fast, strong, tanky), and so there’s no real story behind this choice. That said, I like to imagine that if Rook met some of Alan’s more mischievous ‘mon from the past (such as, oh, Manyula or Mumaragi), he’s the type they’d try to scapegoat for their own wrongdoings even though he’s super honest and sincere and would never do anything wrong ever in his life if he could help it. Don’t worry, Alan never falls for the lies.
Strike might seem like kind of an odd choice, but I think that zebstrika can be pretty strong and fast and Alan would appreciate that, especially in an electric type. Strike is proud and hates losing, and is prone to tantrums and sulking fits when things don’t go his way. This is something he and Alan work on together.
Bear would have been captured as a cubchoo and not intentionally named Bear, but when Alan first encountered the curious little cubchoo trying to raid his bag for snacks, he said, “Hey there, little bear,” and from there on out the cubchoo would not respond to anything else. So now he’s a bear(tic) … named Bear. So it goes.
Lure tried to, well, lure Alan off a cliff at some point, back when she was still a litwick. That didn’t work, and when it didn’t, Lure tried again and again until finally Alan got exasperated and captured her. She still likes to try to lead him off places, this time in earnest, but she has a bad sense of direction and so she can’t be trusted as navigator even when she’s doing her best. She is a solid member of the team, though.
Sharp is the same bisharp that we see in canon. I had no problems with this one, so why change it? I can’t remember the personality I gave him, except maybe he was another that hated to lose? God, I wish I could find that post. Anyway, Sharp is bisharp, you know how it is.
I hated that canon gave Alan a random unfezant, as mentioned above, so that one got axed. I was also really strongly tempted to give him a haxorus, but I feel that’s Iris’ territory since she has that iconic axew, so I left that be.
Kalos:
Charizard — Lizardon (Fire/Flying; Fire/Dragon)
Pangoro — Pandar (Fighting/Dark)
Aegislash — Exagide (Steel/Ghost)
Tyrantrum — Rexillus (Rock/Dragon)
Noivern — Bruyverne (Flying/Dragon)
Meowstic — Mistigrix (Psychic)
Lizardon is self-explanatory.
For some reason I imagine Pandar as a little pancham at Sycamore’s lab that becomes utterly fixated on Alan because he (Pandar) wants to grow up to become very strong and knows that Alan could train him to do so. Thus, Alan ends up taking him along on a journey. Lo and behold, Pandar ends up achieving his dreams, so it’s a happy ending for everyone.
I don’t have much of a story for Exagide, but I think that Alan would be very interested in training an aegislash because of how much strategy goes into battling with one. I think he’d find the challenge exciting, and that Exagide would be happy to have someone who appreciated their talents.
Rexillus just seems like the type of pokémon Alan would like, as with so many others on this list. I’d like to flip the script a little and imagine Rexillus as a very lazy pokémon that Alan really has to work with to get motivated, and that even though Rexillus will at least battle reliably now, his favorite activities are still eating, sleeping, and watching cartoons. (He knows what’s up.)
Bruyverne is, I will admit, a personal bias of mine because I really like noivern, so even though Ash had one, well … it’s not an iconic pokémon of Ash’s, so it’s fine. Hell, maybe Alan was even inspired by Ash’s, I don’t know. Either way, I do think noivern would suit Alan’s battling style, and thus Bruyverne would be a good fit.
Mistigrix might seem weird, but I decided to give one to Alan as a call to the game character Emma, who I feel at least partially inspired Alan’s inclusion in the anime. Emma has an espurr named Mimi, and so I feel that giving Alan an espurr (and then meowstic) works. This works even better if we go with an idea I had once where Emma was Alan’s childhood friend in Lumiose, and she still has Mimi; she has her girl, Mimi, and Alan has his boy, Mistigrix, inspired by Emma and her Mimi. They make a pretty good team.
Alola:
Charizard — Lizardon (Fire/Flying; Fire/Dragon)
Mimikyu — Kyu (Ghost/Fairy)
Mudsdale — Dale (Ground)
(Midday) Lycanroc — Lycan (Rock)
Kommo-o — Kommo (Dragon/Fighting)
Toxapex — Tox (Poison/Water)
Lizardon is self-explanatory.
Kyu is a carry over from my fic To Devour the Sun, although I guess saying that is spoilers a little bit. Regardless, one of the ideas I have for near the end of the fic is for Alan to go off to the abandoned Thrifty Megamart to get some space and time alone (with Lizardon, of course), and while he’s there enjoying the quiet, a very lonely but curious mimikyu ends up coming up to him. The mimikyu means no harm, and she seems to be hurting in some way that he can’t quite identify, but that he empathizes with … so he takes her with him. He names her “Kyu” both because it’s a play on her name, and because she’s curious; “Kyu” sounds like “Q,” like question. (Also, I’ll fully admit that I love mimikyu with all my heart, so. This is a bit of personal bias, too, but I still think it’d be interesting to see Alan with a mimikyu that rides around on his shoulder because she, like Ash’s Pikachu, doesn’t like pokéballs.)
Dale doesn’t have a story behind him, but he seems to fit Alan’s battling style. Also, tbh, Alan is a hero, so we might as well give him a gallant steed to ride on in at least one region.
Lycan is a result of my third eye opening and finally allowing me to see sense. For the longest time I planned on giving Midday Lycanroc to Sycamore in To Devour the Sun, as a play on the whole “papa wolf” theme. As a result I was going to give Alan a drampa here, particularly because I feel that a drampa would gravitate to this boy. However, I have that so backwards. Sycamore should get the drama, as the caretaker of children who can get fiercely protective over them (were it not for the laws of Kalosian land Sycamore may well have burned Isolé Village down for how they treated Alan), and a regal wolf suits Alan far more. Plus, this also works in the sense that Ash has dusk lycanroc, while two of his rivals have the other two forms (Gladion with Midnight, and Alan with Midday). It works out.
Anyway, Lycan still has a very protective personally when it comes to his pack, which is Alan and the rest of the team. So he still acts like a papa wolf, at least.
(Also, don’t tell Sycamore’s drampa about Isolé or it very well might still get burned down after all.)
Kommo is another that I imagine would try to challenge Alan to fights, ultimately see that he can’t win, and then want to come along to train and get stronger. So not a very original story, I guess, but Alan attracts these types because he has that type of warrior spirit.
Tox is kind of a random choice to most, I imagine, but of the remaining pokémon in Alola I figure that toxapex is a good fit. It’s a bit outside of Alan’s normal training style, perhaps, but I think he’d like that challenge.
Final Team:
Charizard — Lizardon (Fire/Flying; Fire/Dragon)
Absol — Sol (Dark)
Mimikyu — Kyu (Ghost/Fairy)
Salamence — Bohmander (Dragon/Flying)
Tyranitar — Bangiras (Rock/Dark)
Aerodactyl — Ptera (Rock/Flying)
a.k.a. The team one would be likely to face if battling him when he’s the Champion.
I spent about three hours putting this all together, and this final team was probably the hardest one. I honestly have a notepad open that I’ve been using to do a base rundown of weaknesses and type coverage and, honestly, I feel like I should be going even deeper by selecting natures and movesets and all that, but … it’s 3am. I’m tired. So I’m not going to do that right now, even though Alan deserves it.
Anyway, my reasoning:
As an overview, I was torn between two different themes. Part of me wanted to give Alan’s final team the theme of mega evolution, in that every single pokémon on it would be capable of mega evolution. The other part of me felt that it was more important to give him pokémon that had more emotional value to him and his story, particularly since the only ‘mon on his team that would be mega evolving during battle would be Lizardon. In the end I did a bit of both; five out of six pokémon on the team above are capable of mega evolution, but I also did my best to choose at least most of them due to emotional weight with regards to him and his story.
So with that said:
Lizardon, as I’ve said a billion times by now, is self-explanatory. He’s Alan’s partner, his platonic soulmate—these two are never going to be separated. Their partnership is so iconic, so legendary, that anyone who even knows of Alan in a passing fashion (“oh yeah, he’s the Kalos Champion”) knows that Lizardon will show up if one challenges Alan to a battle. They’re like Ash and Pikachu. There’s no separation here. And of course, Lizardon is the one who mega evolves as well, meaning that it’s not even that easy to plan against him since his type could change to Fire/Dragon mid-battle. (So, you brought a water-type to deal with him? Too bad for you, he’s not weak to water anymore, suckaaa.)
Sol is included because of everything said above about Alan’s reclamation / healing with absol. Absol don’t cause disasters, and neither did Alan himself. He and Sol would grow really close throughout this process and I feel that Sol would be a very strong member of the team, even though she only has that one singular typing. Sol is also capable of mega evolution, though she would not mega evolve since, no matter how close they are, she and Alan don’t have that level of bond. That’s reserved for Lizardon.
Kyu is also a healing pokémon in Alan’s story, in the sense that when Alan first finds her, her actual Jolly nature has been pretty worn down and smothered by her isolation and other past traumas, the nature of which Alan is never able to learn (but figures it’s not his business anyway). But as they travel and train together, she’s able to heal and her true nature is able to come through. I think that, when looking at the rest of Alan’s team, a mimikyu seems rather unexpected—but that actually works in their favor, particularly given how wicked strong mimikyu can be (and how strong Alan’s in particular would be, given that he would absolutely utilize that Swords Dance + Play Rough / Shadow Claw combo). Kyu would be a smart choice to trip people up.
Bohmander, more often called Boh and inspired by Zinnia, is an important emotional choice for Alan because of that association. I don’t want to spoil too many of my ideas for this adaptation of the Delta Episode (though whether I’ll ever get it written and posted is another matter altogether), but Alan and Zinnia have a platonic, spiritual kinship of sorts that that they feel on a level they can’t entirely explain. They go through a lot together, and come out better because of it. Boh would, in a way, be a reminder of all that, on top of Alan caring for him as a pokémon. Plus, he’s a dragon and he can mega evolve (though he wouldn’t), so that also earns him a place on the team.
Bangiras doesn’t really have emotional significance, but despite being weak to practically everything, type-wise, tyranitar is still an extremely strong pokémon, and is capable of mega evolution (though again, he wouldn’t) to boot. I feel like Bangiras wouldn’t exactly be comfortable hanging out at the lab, and if Alan raised him up from a larvitar, releasing him into the wild would also be a pretty painful choice since it takes so long for larvitar to reach the tyranitar stage. So I feel like keeping Bangiras on the Champion team is worthwhile, even if Bonnie starts singing “Getta Ban Ban” every time she sees him.
Lastly, Ptera is a choice I’m still waffling about, but ultimately decided upon because, while Ptera is technically not a dragon, aerodactyl is dragon-like enough to the point where Lance had one back in Gens I and II. Additionally, aerodactyl is capable of mega evolution (though she wouldn’t), so thematically she also fits in that sense as well. I think in the real world competitive scene aerodactyl isn’t valued so much (unlike tyranitar), but the anime operates by different rules and aerodactyl are shown to be pretty fierce there, so I think that Ptera would still be a smart choice. (Plus, aerodactyl can learn Aqua Tail via move tutor … that would come in handy for any pesky ground-types.)
All that said, I’m still waffling about Ptera because part of me feels like Meta would also be a very good choice. Meta tries very hard and wants to be strong to make Alan happy, so it makes me feel bad to leave them off the type, and Steel/Psychic adds a bit more variety to the above type set. However, the reason why I’m waffling is because even though Meta was inspired by Steven’s metagross, metagross just doesn’t feel like a very Alan pokémon in the same way that an aerodactyl does. Aerodactyl are dragon-esque, and metagross are … robot-esque, I guess? I think I read once they were inspired by UFOs? Metagross stands out in a way that doesn’t feel very true to him, and while it could be argued the same for mimikyu, I think the backstory that I created for Kyu (which honest to god did develop naturally as I was outlining To Devour the Sun) feels like it makes up for it, versus “Steven had a metagross and that seemed inspiring so I caught a beldum to raise up myself.” I love Meta, but ultimately this is why they didn’t make the cut. Though that said, this could easily be a situation where Alan’s sixth pokémon is up for debate, and you see either Ptera or Meta and you’re never sure which one it will be before the battle … that could be the case, too. (Although honestly, that could go for any of his pokémon, because in a universe where he honest to god did catch all these, he could call upon any of them at any time. I imagine the same is true for Ash when Ash is Champion, even if Ash has a more “regular” team that he has on him when traveling and such.)
Anyway, a few more notes:
I really debated adding Soot to the team, since Soot has a VERY strong emotional tie to Alan, second only to Lizardon. However, I think that Soot would prefer belly rubs over battles, so while he can battle, he prefers to spend his time at home being a house dog instead. Alan respects that, and thus doesn’t have him on the active roster. (There’s also the fact that Soot is the only pokémon that Lizardon … it’s nothing personal. Soot hasn’t done anything wrong. But on some level that Lizardon doesn’t like to talk about, he’s jealous of the fact that Soot knew Alan before he did and has a kind of special bond with him because of what happened in Isolé. Lizardon knows that what he has with Alan could never be replaced, but … that sort of unreasonable jealousy is still there. So honestly, Lizardon wouldn’t want Soot on the permanent roster, so it’s good that Soot doesn’t like battling much anyway.)
I did briefly consider Rexillus, particularly since that’s another dragon, but then I remembered that Rex is a lazybones that doesn’t like battling either, so it’d make more sense for Alan to use someone like Bangiras who does enjoy battling instead.
I really, really, really wanted Yoru on the team because, thematically, noctowl suits Alan so well—but ultimately there are stronger choices, so as much as I love Yoru, he’s not a regular battler. (Except for in canon when he was totally in the League instead of that ridiculous fanon unfezant, am I right?)
Anyway, it’s about 3:30am now and I really need to get some sleep, so I’m going to leave this here for now. (I’ll also probably schedule it for a daytime reblog since I’m posting this at an ungodly hour.) Sorry I decided to be so extra about this instead of just answering the question more simply, but I hope you enjoyed it nonetheless! Thanks for asking!

a different kind of catch
Tumblr media
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, @word-bug!!!!!!!! I’d hoped to have this up on your actual bday, but hope it was absolutely amazing and as wonderful and sweet as you are!!! This little CS ficlet was inspired by our mutual continuing love of  Pokémon Go; hope you like it! Love you!!! | 1.9k, rated PG
Emma wasn’t going to let this one go, not this time; she’d come way too close to give up now. She hurried to the spot where her phone told her she’d find her mark, constantly glancing down at the screen to make sure she wasn’t too late.
Everything seemed fine, but she picked up her pace to a jog, impatient to get there as she ran past people on the streets of Boston.
She was almost there—to the Starbucks on the corner—and so close to her prize that she could almost taste it (though that might also have just been the scent of coffee in the air).
Until she collided with something warm and solid just feet from her goal. “Oof—what the hell?”
“Uuh; bloody hell!” the other body shouted out as they both hit the pavement, phones clattering from their hands. Shit, her screen better not be cracked.
“Watch where you’re going, buddy!” she yelled, not looking at the man who ran into her as she scrambled to standing and grabbed her phone. Thank God, not broken—and better yet, there it was!
“Where I’m going?” he protested; she vaguely noticed he had an accent but was too caught up to really care. “Maybe get your head out of your damned phone and you wouldn’t knock over unsuspecting civilians!”
She just waved him off; she had to focus. She’d already missed on her first try, so she threw a berry this time and tried again. It caught...but it broke out. It didn’t run, though.
“Oh, is that the Lapras?” he asked.
“Yes, it’s the Lapras!” she hissed back, not taking her attention off her screen. “I’ve been waiting to catch one of these since the damn game started!” She didn’t have to defend her playing of Pokémon Go as a full-grown adult to some random asshole—not she was finally going to catch one of her favorite Pokémon.
“No, me too; good luck,” he told her, then went silent.
That kind of surprised her, but not enough to distract her from choosing an Ultra Ball. “You too,” she muttered as she wound up a curve ball.
She let go, and the message on the screen said “Great!” as the animation of the ball clasping around the Lapras played. Then she held her breath, waiting—one...two...three!
“Freaking finally!” she shouted; it may have taken two years, but she’d finally got it! (And it was high CP, too!)
“There it is, yes!” the guy echoed moments later. Caught up in the high of the catch, she turned around to give him a high five in celebration of their shared victory.
Without thinking, their hands slapped together, and then she got a look at him—and, woah, he was a catch, too: dark, disheveled hair hung over his forehead, just above his bright blue eyes, sparkling with happiness; a grin was playing at his lips and his sharp jaw was dusted with gingery scruff; and he may as well have been dressed like a modern Pokémon trainer because who honestly wore waistcoats anymore? (Though she didn’t recall anyone from the anime with that much chest hair...not that she was complaining.)
He seemed just as taken aback as she was, and their hands kind of hung in the air after their high five until they realized what they were doing and dropped them, both suddenly aware of how awkward they were being—not that it really mattered when they were celebrating a video game based on a television show that was originally targeted at children.
“Congratulations, love,” he offered, nodding toward her phone. “Is it a good one?”
“Yeah,” she answered, kind of shyly. “Yours?”
“Pretty good.” They stood there for another moment, unsure what to do; she should probably keep walking, considering she had an egg close to hatching, but then he spoke up again. “I do apologize for the collision; I believe I was just as focused as you were on catching that. Let me buy you a drink to make up for it?” he said, tilting his head at the Starbucks. “Maybe a Pokémon Go frappuccino?” he suggested, winking poorly.
She just scrunched her nose and giggled; she’d had that once and it was way too sweet for her. “Nah, that’s too much,” she replied. “But I guess I could go for a hot chocolate?”
“Sounds perfect.” He gestured toward the door, but then raced ahead to open it before she got to it.
“So now you’re a gentleman?” she teased.
“I’m always a gentleman,” he answered smoothly.
She shivered a bit; damn, this guy had an effect on her, and that almost never happened. But most guys weren’t as unashamed about Pokémon Go as he was. “Does the gentleman have a name?” she enquired.
“Killian.”
“Emma.”
They got in line and both busied themselves with their phones while waiting to place their orders. “You know,” she started. “That’s probably a good name for a Lapras.”
“What is?” he wondered.
“Killian.” She liked saying his name; it was unique, and her Lapras was male, after all.
He grinned—a real one this time, and brilliant. “I suppose I could say that Emma is, too.” Oh, and she liked how he said her name, too.
“Seems like a pretty good way to honor the moment,” she decided.
“Aye,” he agreed, and they placed their drink order.
While they were waiting for their beverages at the other end of the counter, she couldn’t help but glance over as he scrolled through his collection. “Damn, how’d you get all those Mr. Mimes?” He had a ton, whereas she would likely never even get one—stupid geo-locked Pokémon!
“I just moved here from the UK,” he explained. “They’re everywhere over there. But I’ve yet to see any Tauros now that I’m here.”
“Yeah, you don’t see too many in the city; but out of town—tons. Actually, I have a couple strong ones, if you wanna trade?” Technically she’d been saving those for her brother—one of the only other people she knew who played and was amassing a Tauros army, for some reason—but she could totally spare one to a good, mutually beneficial cause.
“I'd love that!” he gushed. Their drinks were up, so they grabbed them and found a little table in the corner. “Pardon the awful line,” he started after they sat, “but what’s your number?”
She snorted, but it was probably the first time in ages she was happy to give someone her “number”. “It’s 1022 0206 0620.”
He typed it in and then proclaimed “sent! To SwanGirl83.”
“That’s me,” she confirmed, and she got the notification on her end a few seconds later. “xJollyxRogerx24?”
“Aye,” he replied. She took a moment to observe his avatar; it was a pretty close representation, though dressed as close as possible to being a pirate, complete with eye patch. “I take it you’re a Captain Hook fan?” she quipped.
“Ha, yeah,” he laughed. “It’s not quite a hook, but same idea,” he added, holding up his left hand—which she suddenly realized wasn’t a hand, but rather a gloved prosthesis that matched the ones his avatar wore.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry—I didn’t mean—I didn’t even see…” she stammered; of course she’d put her foot in her mouth with the hottest player she’d ever come across; she could feel a Golem-like rock forming in her stomach.
To her surprise, though, he just waved her off. “No, no—you’re fine, lass; I’m the one making fun of it in the first place,” he assured her. Then his eyes bounced between her and his screen for a second, before stating, “I hope this isn’t too forward of me, but I daresay I prefer the actual Emma. Though that’s quite the fetching romper.”
She blushed a little, both at the compliment and the fact that she hadn’t changed her avatar’s outfit since the game started. There was just something so...Pokémon about that one-piece and leggings. “What can I say? I like to be comfy.”
“That implies you actually own a romper, then.”
“Ha, I wish!”
He replied with an almost goofy leer, eyebrow arched in amusement; she just shook her head, laughed, and promptly hid her embarrassment at walking into that by hiding in her hot chocolate.
“So, Pikachu as your companion?” he continued, apparently studying her via whatever symbolism could be found by her choices within the game.
“Yeah,” she said after she swallowed. “Can’t go wrong with a classic. And I like yellow.”
“I can see that, with you being yellow team and all.” He had her there.
“I’m guessing you like red, then, being Team Valor and with that shiny Gyarados there?” she guessed.
“Oy, he’s badass!” he protested, but then relented. “But yes, that’s part of it.”
They processed the trade, both finally adding another to their almost-completed Pokédexes, and then she sent him the most Boston gift she had on hand: Fenway Park. And he apparently sent her the most London one he still had: Big Ben. They shared giggles over that, and continued to chat—a bit about the game, comparing each others’ current stashes of Pokémon, but then it went onto work, family, friends, all that normal stuff, though it turned out neither of them really had much in that department.
Usually, she avoided romance altogether; she’d only found heartbreak there, and something told her Killian had, too. But what were the odds that she’d literally run into someone who shared so much with her, in addition to one of her favorite hobbies? For the first time in ages, she actually allowed herself to hope for something like that; hopefully he couldn’t see the Luvdiscs swimming in her eyes.
“Hey, there’s a raid a block over; I need to beat one for a research task.” His voice pulled her from her daydreaming. “Would you care to join me?”
She glanced at her screen; it was just a Ninetails, but she could always use another one. “Sure!”
They left the Starbucks—both hitting the Poké Stop there one more time for good measure, as well as a couple more on the way—and found the “gym” (actually just an ugly statue; it never ceased to amaze her the sorts of things that were considered “monuments” in this game). To the casual passerby, it probably looked like they were just two strangers immersed in their phones, but partnering up with Killian to takedown a foe was actually bringing them closer; seeing that red Gyarados in action was incredible, even if she was focused on what her Vaporeon was doing, too.
In no time at all, they’d knocked out the Ninetails and had both caught it. “I apologize if this is forward, Swan,” Killian said, “but we make quite the team.”
She couldn’t refute it. “Yeah, we do.”
Battling in raids together became a regular thing, and he was the first person she reached Best Friends level with (much to David’s chagrin). She jokingly bought him an eye patch for Christmas; he seriously bought her a romper.
And then, a couple years later, he proposed to her with a diamond ring nestled inside a Poké ball. People could rag on the game all they wanted; for Emma and Killian, it had been the best thing ever.
Hope you liked it and that maybe you got a birthday Lapras! also tagging a few others who I think still play/like it: @initiala @killian-morelike-killingme @distant-rose @queen-mabs-revenge @forestiyari @kat2609 @optomisticgirl @xpumpkindumplingx @wingedlioness @biancaros3

November 21st, 2017
This is the second of two new entries, which were at one point slated to be one entry. I’m glad they weren’t, since both of them got long as hell. I blame the fact that I’m also chipping my way through a 7 hour video essay on Pokemon for my long windedness. If you don’t remember the one where I caught a Drowzee, I recommend scrolling down. Now’s also a good time to remind you that it’s possible to read the entire thing chronologically, by clicking... well, any word in this sentence, how about. Also the Pokedex in the sidebar.
Now seems as good a time as any to mention what I forgot to in my admitted rush to finish the prior entry - while grinding up Baku, I was also hanging out with friends, and finally actually did the damn thing: Moschops was traded for a Kakuna, and then traded back, evolving it to its final form. This is the second time in my lifetime of playing Pokemon that I've actually used the evolved form of a trade evolution, and the first is my Alolan Golem in Sun which I am still not actually finished with yet, largely due to this playthrough superceding it as a priority in my mind, and also because, maybe it's just me but that game's pacing really falls off by the time you're on Poni Island. Not that it was really well paced to begin with, but-- oh, bugger, I'll save this all for when I nuzlocke that game. Uh. If I get there. Maybe I'll be so put off by how much I hate 2nd Gen that I'll simply not get to 3rd. (That's probably not true, I love 3rd Gen so much, I'll slog through garbage to get to it.)
Anyway yeah, I have rad friends and I love them very much and so I have a Machamp now. Weird! I've used Machoke before, but never actually Machamp.
Blaine's gym is the next one, and I actualy have notes on it beyond "the gym trainers were easy." As the series progresses, gyms will become more elaborate - here, they're just. Walk in a straight line, walk in a straight line and then turn left, rifle through some garbage, cut some trees, follow an "invisible" path, just choose a teleport tile and pray, and the two I'm about to knock out back to back.
Blaine's gym is really weird. I definitely understand what they were going for, but it turned out super strange. So Blaine is like, this researcher professor guy, like not quite Pokemon Professor but he knows his shit and wears a lab coat sometimes and the works. So his gym is a quiz. There's these quiz machines that ask you a question that varies from bafflingly simple, such as "does Caterpie evolve into Butterfree", to just plain baffling, either due to strange wording or ambiguous wording. Like... on the one hand they are clearly meant to test your knowledge that you've gained as you adventured, since you're essentially at endgame territory here. But Blaine isn't the kind of professor that seems to legitimately want to test your knowledge, oh no, his questions seem purposely worded to confuse. For example, the first one, "Caterpie evolves into Butterfree?" On the one hand, yes, one of Caterpie's evolutions is Butterfree... but at the same time, Caterpie DOESN'T evolve into Butterfree. Caterpie evolves into Metapod, and Metapod evolves into Butterfree. The correct answer is yes, but it's not technically accurate. Another question asks if Poliwag evolves thrice, which is false, it evolves twice, but it's easy to count each form - Poliwag, Poliwhirl and Poliwrath - and assume that that matches up with the "3" in the question. Also, in what I can only assume to be translation error, one question manages to not only refer to the Electric type as "Thunder", but also refers to types as "element-types". Super weird.
Anyway, I did all the trivia and also fought all the trainers. Used to Firered, I find the lack of unique overworld sprites for the gym leaders interesting. I didn't even realize it was Blaine I was next to until I saw that there was no quiz machine behind him. Of course, with my Nessie and Cingu, the gym is no issue at all. I brink Moschops in too for his rock move, and Wakinyan just in case things got hairy, which they did not - I beat him handily.
Speaking of being beaten handily, the final gym has this mystery behind it, but I appreciate that before you are face to face with his widow's peaked mug, you have every opportunity to guess that the final gym leader is Giovanni of Team Rocket. The "Champ in the making!" dude tells you he uses ground types - and Giovanni, excepting his Kangaskhan, uses Nidoqueens and Rhyhorns and such consistently. That, and the puzzle here is the same pushing tiles that were used in the Rocket Hideout - I guess he likes those things? I know we encounter them in the hideout before the gym, but I like to think that it's the other way around. We don't get as much backstory on Giovanni as I'd like, but I like to imagine that he was a perfectly legitimate gym leader before starting Team Rocket, and he used the puzzle tiles the Pokemon League provided for him in his top secret casino hideout just cause they were the same kind of puzzle he liked enough to put in his gym.
As for fighting him... it's a joke. I was a little nervous going in about his powerful last 'mon and its Fissure, but... it's got 30% accuracy and I outspeed it anyway. Giovanni is defeated, this time for the last time. In this game - and this was removed in the remakes since it is counter to his characterization in his later appearances - if you speak to him after beating him, he says he is giving up on crime for good in order to research Pokemon. I think that's compelling and, again, hints at something a little more earnest in his past and in his motivations. Allow me to extrapolate for a moment here: Team Rocket's goals, in the anime and in the games, are consistent: find and capture rare Pokemon by any means necessary. In this game, they are first found in Mt. Moon, where rare Pokemon fossils can be found that can be resurrected at Cinnabar Island; then, the Silph Scope is recovered from them in Celadon, which is used primarily to be able to observe Ghost Pokemon in the Pokemon Tower, where they can also be found holding one of the region's well known Pokemon caretakers hostage. After that, they are in Silph Co., a powerful organization that has manufactured the Master Ball, which can be used to catch any Pokemon with perfect success. While the grunts may be using common Pokemon like Zubat and Rattata, the big boss has typically got Rhyhorn, Kangaskhan, and Nidoqueen, all Pokemon that are either only or most commonly accessible by way of the Safari Zone, where rarer Pokemon are sequestered for preservation.
What if Giovanni's real purpose is to study these rare Pokemon? Not money, nor pride, but simply the pursuit of knowledge? Taken to extremes, sure, but perhaps from his perspective, the real crime is holding these creatures away from researchers (which, as seen in Silph Co., Team Rocket also employs) that can learn more about them. Bam. There's my wild theory of the week.
Anyway yeah I went in without Wakinyan and just wrecked up his face. Hard not to, with Lapras and Penthes and Moschops and Baku. Cingu didn't do much, nor did he need to.
Speaking of Cingu, I then taught him Fissure. Now, normally, I would pretty much ignore OHKO moves. I mean, it'd be fun to give it to Moschops, but since all transferred Pokemon have their hidden abilities, it still would not be a Fissure/No Guard Machamp, so there's no point to that - instead, I gave it to the faster Cingu, after a bit of research. You see, I did not realize until around 24 hours prior to the time of this writing when I has beaten Giovanni's gym that the X Accuracy was changed in Gen 3. In Gen 3 onwards, which are the only generations I've played extensively, the X Accuracy is a very situationally useful item in a set of items that are essentially like Hardens, Howls, and Focus Energys that you can pay for. Those same moves aren't really that useful either, since far better moves like Swords Dance and Agility are just plain better versions of them. X Accuracy is probably the best of the set since it actually increases your own accuracy by a stage, allowing the effects of moves like the obnoxious Sand Attack or Minimize to be negated or at least mitigated... but since the overwhelming majority of attacks hit 100% of the time, and if you've been sand attacked then using the X Accuracy only gives them another chance to fling sand in your face, the usefulness is not exactly on the level of say, Potions and Pokeballs.
Except, things are a little different in Gen 1. You see, when an X Accuracy is used on a Pokemon in battle in Gen 1, it makes all of its moves hit perfectly every time until it is switched out or fainted. All of them, bypassing accuracy checks a la Swift, which I believe means it isn't even able to fall prey to the dreaded 1/256 glitch, which makes 100% accuracy moves miss one out of every 256 times. Including one hit KO moves like Fissure. (As a side note, this may also be handy with Thunder, which has only 70% accuracy - if it becomes a perfect hit then I'm far more confident of Wakinyan's ability to sweep Lorelei, at the least.)
Which, obviously, is ridiculous. Of course, Fissure only has 5 PP... but I've also not used a single one of the limited Ethers, Elixirs, etc. that the game provides. And with the exception of Dingus, every member of the Elite 4 has 5 Pokemon. (Of course, almost all of them also have a Flying type, and I'm sure SOME of them will outspeed Cingu, which should make Fissure fail regardless.) So like... basically, it's completely busted but fuck me if I'm not gonna take advantage of it. I'm already taking advantage of how busted Slash is. Honestly I'm gonna be sad to push Cingu through the Bank, since it's gonna go from utterly disgustingly broken to like... a normal Pokemon, basically.
Anyway then I slept, woke up, and played more Pokemon.
Now, at this point, I could go to Victory Road. But. Some unfinished business first! The Seafoam Islands are a fairly simple dungeon, with a Strength boulder dropping puzzle that's fairly memorable. Also there's a bird at the end. I murdered this bird, since I couldn't catch it. It actually brought Moschops to fairly low health. Serves me right for trying to use my 4x effective move that just happens to be on my "weak to flying" Pokemon.
NOW I'm ready for Victory Road, except for the fact that I absolutely forgot that there was a rival fight on Route 22 as you're headed for the Pokemon League. I was all healed up anyway, and I don't need to box anyone since he's got 6 Pokemon by now (but apparently no Fire Stones, lol - really, still Growlithe?), but I was still caught off guard, which I'm sure is the point.
Moschops handles Pidgeot and Rhyhorn, which hurts bad enough to switch him for Wakinyan, who, not gonna lie, is basically literally only here to OHKO this Gyarados. Nessie beats Growlithe but Alakazam puts it to 40 health, the lowest any of my Pokemon has been in a long while. Baku has the psychic resistance, so he finishes off Alakazam and then hits Venusaur for super effective damage, but I switch back to Wakinyan to finish him off.
I heal at home and NOW I'm actually going towards Victory Road.
First though, I run around in the grass on Route 23 for a wee bit before realizing that the only Pokemon I can find there are Sandslash/shrew, Sp/Fearow, or Ditto, all of which I still have living. I then think to fish, but I don't have my rod with me. Ah well, can't be arsed.
Victory Road! It's a road made of victory!! Let's see what EXCITING NEW POKEMON await us in this, our final dungeon of the-- oh. Zubat. It's a Zubat. I just caught another Zubat. ts name is Desmod, but it might as well be... Box 1. Cause that's where it'll be living. (Actually Box 2 though, I think.)
The dungeon here isn't actually that tough. The encounter rate is high enough that I got annoyed and put up some repels, but all that'll do is make grinding go a bit faster because you KNOW I'm not gonna fight the Elite 4 until everyone's AT LEAST Level 50. The trainers in here, to their credit, are reasonably tough. One Tamer in particular hurt me pretty bad with his sequence of Psychic types. I tried not to leave too often, since, at the very least, doing so would reset puzzle progress and drain max repels, but I did after this dude. Dig still takes me near Rock Tunnel. I literally haven't healed anywhere other than home since Rock Tunnel, lol. That'll change soon, I bet.
While here, I battled Moltres, the last of three legendary birds. As promised, I'll now discuss my thoughts on legendaries, because I quite frankly think that they're ruddy genius... in this game, and less so increasingly as the series progresses.
In this game, there are 4 legendary Pokemon - the three legendary birds and Mewtwo. Mew is a mythical and I'll talk about those another time, but legendaries are a distinct thing. In this game, despite all being birds except for the edgy one for whatever dumb reason, they are absolutely fantastically executed. Pokemon is a game that revels in boss fights - most routes have the strongest trainer strategically positioned last in a route, sometimes actively obstructing progress. Your rival shows up to fight you a total of eight times counting his final fight, which comes as a surprise at the end of the long foreshadowed gauntlet of four big bosses fought one after another with no Pokemon Centers inbetween, Team Rocket's leader fights you twice before being the last of eight town-based bosses themed around the elements, and that's not even counting optional bosses like the Karate King. However, all of these fights have something in common - they're all trainer fights.
While the distinction between trainer battles and wild Pokemon battles is not one that DRASTICALLY effects gameplay, it is one that exists. While the core principles are the same, two integral things about wild battles that are core to how they are approached are simply not options in trainer battles: running, and throwing Poke Balls. You can't steal people's Pokemon, but you can catch wild ones, and on occasion that capture is harder than most battles.
As such, legendary Pokemon are essentially the "wild Pokemon" answer to gym leaders. While gym leaders are a tough fight against a smart(ish) trainer with strong Pokemon, a legendary Pokemon is strong and, more importantly, very very hard to capture. I want to be clear, defeating these legendaries is not the hard part. I didn't actually do these bosses as they are intended to be fought, since I killed Moltres and Articuno and I used my Master Ball on Zapdos. But, had I gone the traditional route, I could have been spending 30+ Ultra Balls on EACH of them, and having to be so careful not to kill it or let it kill itself, or to let it kill any of my Pokemon. And this is a serious challenge! And THIS is what legendary Pokemon are for. They are out of the way, optional, very challenging, but rewarding intrinsically, because if you DO do the hard thing and catch them, then you have a powerful Pokemon you can use now. This is in opposition to the extrinsic reward of defeating a gym leader for a badge that allows you to train traded Pokemon to a higher level, to use HMs out of battle, to slightly increase stat growth, or whatever else. Getting handed something for winning a fight is great and makes sense... but with the legendaries, the fight is getting the damn things to stay in a ball, and the reward is the same as the reward for throwing a Poke Ball at a Rattata on Route 1: now you HAVE IT.
Of course... nothing stays good forever. In Gen 2, they introduce roaming legendaries. This is a different type of boss fight that takes place over the course of several fights, and is generally agreed to be way more of an obnoxious pain in the ass without actually being that innovative or fun. Instead of doing a cool dungeon that's hidden away and then fighting through your increasing worry to press onwards rather than resetting... an event flag happens in the story, and then you get to run aroung and do chip damage to a big cat or dog or something.
In Gen 3, for the first time, legendary Pokemon, rather than being hidden and out of the way, are thrust firmly in your face. This is the beginning of a change but, at least it's still a big lump of pain to actually capture Kyogre, Groudon or Rayquaza. While this gen also starts the trend of having more legendaries than it knows what to do with, it also makes up for it by having the most esoteric, "Mew is under the truck" type garbage puzzles in the whole series to get the golem-based Regis.
After this, things go bad quick. Starting in Gen 5 and continuing onwards, even being awkwardly shoehorned into the remakes of Gen 3, legendaries go from something you can seek out if you fancy a challenge or are a collector or want the power that comes with them... to being something that's literally handed to you on a silver platter, and that the game will not progress unless you acquire. This is bad and sucks. We'll get to it later.
Speaking of getting to things later. Next time, I guess... will be the Elite Four. After that, assuming I succeed, I'm gonna do some wrap up stuff. I do want to make some posts on here that aren't simply entries, talking about my overall opinion of Gen 1, my experience with nuzlocking it, and also discussing my opinions on some of the Pokemon found therein, which I will generally try to keep positive, since every Pokemon is someone's favorite and it's better to praise something that someone else might not have thought twice about than it is to criticize something that someone else might love. I may give a passing mention to which Pokemon appeal to me the least, but I would say that there are no Pokemon that I think are completely awful or unworthy of Being A Pokemon. (Also that gap will give me the time to finish Sun and buy an Ultra game which, given that MOST people I know who bought Moon were boring and then also bought Ultra Moon rather than buying Ultra Sun which I would think to make sense, will probably be Ultra Sun cause like, then I can trade my Blacephalon for their Stakataka or whatevs.) And then after that... Gen 2.
So, yeah. This has been an experiment so far and I'm really happy with how it has turned out. I look forward, not just to playing but also to writing each installment, and ideally, you look forward to reading them, even if they are uploaded at really weird times.
I'm gonna update the sidebar when I wake up in the... afternoon. Working overnights weirds time.

About Pokemon: I choose you! The Movie (non-spoilers version) *small edit: 18/Jul*
Salt or not, you should watch it - it is hard to criticize the experience only by reading spoiler notes/plot reviews. Go watch the movie without much expectations, even with some (big?) flaws it is quite an entertaining film.
If you love Ash and Pikachu’s friendship, I’m pretty sure you will enjoy this - their relationship is indeed the big deal of the movie. Their voice actresses do an incredible job in this movie, it is worth to note how much their talent make a huge difference in the quality of the movie. The animation has some really pretty scenes and cool battles, I loved how expressive Ash and Pikachu were!
M20 is also a good treat for fans of the original series soundtrack, it has some nice rearranges of the old time classics! Plus so many references from previous movies!
Many people cried during many parts of the film, I noticed also some surprised gasps and bursts of laughter around/in front of my seat range too. I missed watching flawed Ash.... And, oh, he does answer what does a "Pokemon Master" mean this time lol.
On the other hand, the plot and the pacing… are a big mess. Too much info, not enough time to develop each thread, then it ends in a very rushed way. No wonder why I ended up with so many mixed feelings about the whole thing, hahaha, I personally wouldn’t rank it as my favorite pokemon movie but… I don’t think it is also as awful as some people have claimed xD
It is indeed a very strange experience, for instance… New characters are not bad, they have some background and personality - I’d say they are fitting and likeable but also kinda of pointless at the same time? Or, another example, emotional scenes are intense but they are also solved so quickly that is barely no time to let the info sink lol. IMO this film was better than the last recent movies, it’s like “well, M20 was really nice, I’m not mad but it had potential to be much better - but still, it was very fun, go watch it”? Please try watching it!
So many people in the movie theater - both kids and adults… also, so many 3ds devices lol (Marshadow is a gift through local wireless network. They included a short announcement at the start/end of the movie by Shokotan-Joy reminding us of that!). I’m happy that I got Marshadow and also a Ga-ole card with Movie!Hat Pikachu - it can be converted to Pokemon USUM in the future…
I’m still unsure which Hat-chu should I redeem with my ticket code. Maybe AG one?
Oh, (long) ramblings and spoilers after this cut:
Spoiler talk:
I don’t think Pikachu’s speaking scene was as bad as some people said… I thought that was very emotional and meaningful? It is very ambiguous scene, I saw that moment as Ash understanding Pikachu’s pokemon words with full clarity, he was so weak (c'mon boy was exhausted lol) and I don’t think Pikachu literally spoke in human language… The atmosphere kinda implies it is something only Ash could understand that instant, like the blurred and muffled sounds.
I really like Ash and Pikachu and I guess anyone who has/had a partner like that might get emotional over that. Ugh, maybe it’s Ootani’s acting… idk, either way that crushed my heart really badly. I surprisingly got much more emotional about it than I thought I would, even after being bombed with pre-screening spoilers.
^few minutes before I was honestly wanting to laugh/cringe at MARSHADOW WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING and the UGH incineroar’s PELVIC BELT FIRE ATTACKS WHY DID YOU REMIND US OF THAT DETAIL FROM THE GAMES DDDD:
Convoluted plot much? Yamachan is a nice Marshadow! But… Kinda too bad the Pokemon itself in the story is really confusing. Pacing is also weird, felt like the plot is too long and suddenly close to the end they had to wrap it up in a rush? I thought it was nice in a way that you don’t get bored because things go nonstop, however it would definitely work better as a short TV series than a single movie.
They must really like those guest celebrities to create the two new rushed Please!DPPremake!characters. I do think the movie would work better with Ash and Pikachu traveling alone - for example, Bonji could easily sometimes fill the gaps the role of the two companions are meant to be… I mean, Souji and Makoto are nice, but still… Ugh, it does feels a bit like they were forced to be there.
I hope you like Entei better than Suicune and Raikou lol. It’s like… The first one is a badass and the other two are simply… there. Suicune only appears to Makoto and they exchange glances... and that's all.
Team Rocket’s cameos are very short but cute. I liked the best the one at the beginning, at the Pokemon Center, when Joy goes"omg those guys!!!“ and instead of attacking the place, TRio just leave excited like the other kids "yaaaaay Entei!!!” XD
I apparently wasn’t the only one who was confused about Marshadow’s intentions in that movie. Judging by the viewers’ reactions, I noticed a lot of people were confused about it… Even understanding Japanese language didn’t help much tbh.
Going back to Ho-Oh and Marshadow, I didn’t get it at first, but…
…Well, Ash got one of Ho-Oh’s feather and it kept shining with bright colors because he has a good heart - if the feather gets dark, according to the legend, it is thanks to humans being evil, which results in things going really bad, right?
Marshadow knows that black feather = not good - that’s why when Ash is blinded by frustration and the feather gets darker, he creates that dream world where Ash realizes how important Pikachu was for him and tries to find his partner even though he can’t remember him in that illusion world. It takes a while to Ash realize he was being reckless and stupid, but after he remembers and understand he was being stupid, he quickly wakes up and apologize to Pikachu with real regret, and the feather goes colorful again, right?
The second time the feather goes dark is when Cross snatch it from Ash’s hand and later on, Marshadow takes it and start destroying everything around it. Bonji tells Ash he should get his feather back asap or else Marshadow will never stop unleashing its power, right….
1) so you could say Marshadow is like a guardian that creates a trial for those who bear the rainbow feather, ensuring pokemon are safe from evil people/good people can meet Ho-Oh (does it mean when Ash “dies”, he actually goes under Marshadow’s trial and he quickly returns to the real world due to his bond to Pikachu?)
ooor
2) Marshadow actually a sneaky little chaotic pokemon that is very aware that when the feather gets dark, it is its opportunity to snatch it and unleash its power. That explains why dark feather = bad stuff happens and why Marshadow stop hitting the humans and fades away after the dark feather in its hands disappears and reappears as a colored feather in Ash’s hand)
So… Which one is the actual thing, 1 or 2?
I’m not planning to watch it a second time soon, but let’s see if someone else does it and help us figuring out the plot lol. It’s probably easier to understand it after a second view (I mean, I HOPE SO lol).
About specific stuff I was asked on Tumblr, in no particular order:
Oh, the credits with old characters was not a full screen part… Only a small portion of the screen. They all begin as shadowed figures that look at the camera, reveling their full bodies. The background is the same for all characters.
Misty was riding her bike! May tied her bandanna! Clemont’s glasses were shining! Serena kept her old looks, everybody had their original clothes and style… TRACEY! o/
Max appeared together with May and Bonnie appeared together with Clemont.
I was very intrigued that only (cute upside down) Iris and Serena were smiling in their respective scenes… Everybody else looked slightly surprised/confused somewhat? So odd. :/
While Makoto is checking out her “smartphone”, after some pictures of her friends (we can see that Souji is the one who cooks for the trio) and their pokemon we can see her mother’s picture (+Piplup and Empoleon). Yeah, possibly Cynthia - she’s missing the trademark hairclips and the hair color is slightly darker… but that long peculiar hair is quite similar to that character… Plus Makoto herself hints "my hometown (Twinleaf - Sinnoh) has a very famous trainer..."
The teacher inside the classroom of IRL Ash was Agatha, wasn’t it?
Professor Oak has a Squirtbottle.
Souji is seen spotting an Articuno at the end of the movie. Meanwhile, Makoto explains she will go back home to see her mother.
Ah, close to the end I remember seeing the Alolan starters animated - sorry, I don't remember when exactly but it was before the credits, when Ash and Pikachu already said goodbye to Souji and Makoto.
The Lapras is not Ash's, it's Makoto's. She kisses the pokeball before throwing it...
Pikachu's spoken lines: "ずっと一緒にいたいから" (zutto issho ni itai kara): Because I wants to be with you, always.
Oh, Ash does define what does it mean to him to be a pokemon master: to become a friend of all pokemon in the world!

And with this I’ve written poly team leaders from each of their POVs woopwoop! There will be more, don’t worry. ^_^
“I’m sorry,” she mumbles into her Arcanine’s fur. His gait is lopsided, but he’s galloping along gamely. “We’ll be back soon and I’ll fix you right up.” He whorfs back at her. Her hands tighten on his neck ruff, and she says, “Yeah, I was dumb.” A whine. His speed picks up.
How was she supposed to know that that Lapras could use Ice Beam? It looked young, and it was clearly hurt. She knew for a fact Ember had at least ten levels more of experience. In retrospect, Ember had probably startled it. But it had seemed so calm… Damn her bleeding heart.
She lifts her head just enough to see over Ember’s fur. The Shuca Berry tree passes by in a whirl of pink. They’re almost back.
She startles awake at Ember’s bark. Had she fallen asleep? No, she’d just zoned out for a moment. They’re home, she realizes as the view registers. “Good boy, Emby.“ He sits down slowly and she finds her way down to the ground. Exhaustion hits her hard, why she doesn’t know. Ember’s got an injury, not her.
She walks up the path, Ember right by her. “Spark,” she says, seeing him come out of the house. Am I glad to see you. “Ember’s, Ember’s hurt…“
Suddenly her vision blurs and everything wobbles.
“Blanche!” Spark calls, and Candela recognizes that crack in his voice that happens when he’s scared or upset. But why, she wonders. She’s okay, just a little cold. Or a lot, maybe. She tries to tell Spark this as he runs toward her (slow down, I’m fine) but she finds she can’t talk and her knees give out and she falls into Spark’s arms.
Weird. I can’t really feel my body anymore.
“You’re gonna be okay, C, you’re gonna be just fine, okay?”
The last thing she sees are his eyes, shards of bright amber as darkness closes in.
*****
She wakes in bed. A down comforter covers her, and she thinks there’s a hot water bottle tucked against her side. Her whole body feels kind of like a wet noodle, but nothing hurts and she’s safe…
Spark’s in a chair by the bed. He half-smiles when their eyes meet. “Hey,” he says quietly.
“Hey.” She blinks several times, questions jostling around her mind. The cocoon of warmth is starting to feel constricting; carefully, she pulls her arms out from under the covers. “Where’s Blanche?”
“Fixing up Ember. Getting food ready for later.“
“What happened to me?”
“Hypothermia.”
“What time is it?”
He shrugs. “Honestly, I have no idea. I’ve been here waiting for you to wake up.”
Her throat feels dry. “How… How long was I out?”
His face changes, and something tugs at her heart. “I don’t really know,” he says, after a long silence, voice rough. “I’m just really glad you’re awake now, Candy.”
Normally she’d kick him into next week for calling her that, but she’s too tired to care right now. Besides, it doesn’t sound that bad this time. Maybe it has something to do with him holding her hand. When had he done that? She can feel her own skin now, and Spark’s palm over her knuckles. His fingers won’t stay still, stroking her wrist lightly, and she wants to tell him to stop but it feels nice. She lets out a long sigh, then yawns even longer.
Spark drops his head the way he does when he’s trying not to laugh. When he looks back up, the light from the bedside lamp catches his eyelashes, and jeez they’re pretty, longer than hers and why the hell is she thinking about that? Maybe Blanche gave her pain meds.
“So what kind of trouble did you get into, anyway.” He squeezes her hand.
“Uh.” What did happen? “I found a… There was…” She blinks, a thought intruding. “Is Ember okay?”
“Yeah.” Another squeeze. “You know Blanche. Could give Nurse Joy a run for her money.” He smiles, but it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “He had a shard of ice in his leg. Didn’t even blink when Blanche pulled it out.”
“Lapras!” Candela exclaims, bolting upright. Spark pulls back, wide-eyed.  “It was wounded and I chose Ember because I didn’t want to make it faint and he’s strong enough to weather the type disadvantage but, but it used Ice Beam and what the hell kind of wild Lapras knows Ice Beam? Something went wrong and I guess I got hit but I, I just…”
Her eyes are burning and her throat hurts and oh no she shouldn’t cry–
“I just w-wanted to h-help it, Spark.” She sniffles as tears spill over. This is so embarrassing. “I didn’t think. It was scared. But it looked so sad…!”
She turns away, hating the sobs forcing their way from her chest. “I’m so stupid,” she chokes out. “I n-never think before I act. Ember got hurt, I could’ve di–”
“You’re not stupid.”
She’s barely realized Spark’s words before he’s hugging her. She pulls in a shuddering breath. His hands are on her back, his chin on her shoulder, and he’s so warm…
“Don’t talk about yourself like that,” he says into her ear. “You did what you thought was right at the time.”
Hesitantly, she puts her arms around him. “But, but I–”
“You scared me and Blanche half to death, yes. And I really hope you won’t do that again.”
“But–”
He lets her go, gently and yet not gently enough. She feels like shivering.
He sits on the bed instead of the chair, and takes both her hands. “You’re too important to us. To me. You know that, right?“
“Y-Yeah…?” Her head is spinning. Spark’s looking at her too intensely. A voice in the recesses of her mind is telling her to kiss him. She ignores it, looks down at their hands instead. Then she says exactly what she’s not ready to say. “You care a lot about me, huh.”
“Of course I do, you dummy,” he says.
Silence. Neither of them move. Something jigsaws together in her head, too fast for the right words. “I know Blanche– you and me are both–   but… you with me? I didn’t think–”
And then she can’t speak because his mouth is on hers. Just for a few seconds, but those seconds stretch and shimmer around the edges, and she leans in to follow him but he still pulls away.
“Does that clear things up for you?” His eyes are honey-soft, and he’s smiling, and his cheeks are a little pink.
He loves her. She… loves him.
“I think so,” she says slowly. “You might have to kiss me again. So I can be sure.”
He grins, eyes shining, and eases her back down to the pillows. “I don’t want to tire you out. Technically you’re still convalescing.” But he kisses her forehead, lips lingering. “And I need to tell Blanche you’re awake.”
“I got the message.”
She looks over. Blanche is in the doorway, leaning against the frame, looking content enough to purr.
Candela feels a blush coming on. “How long have you been there?”
“Long enough.” Blanche moves to sit on the other side of the bed, laying one hand over Candela’s and feathering the other into Candela’s hair, petting slowly. “It’s about time, I must say. I was started to think I’d need to engineer something.”
She’s beginning to feel sleepy again, but manages a “What.”
“Aren’t you glad we saved you the trouble?” Spark says, leaning over to kiss Blanche’s cheek.
“What,” she says again. She does kind of get it, but she’s too drowsy to figure it out fully, and looking at them leaning against each other above her, both holding her hands, makes her chest feel tight in a good way and right now that’s all that matters. “I love you,” she blurts, because she does, she really does, and she doesn’t say it out loud that often, and never to Spark before. “I love you.” She wants it to be official and real and not a dream. She doesn’t want to sleep.
Her cheeks warm with kisses from both of them at once, and soft words murmured into her skin.
“We’ll still be here when you wake up,” Blanche says.
“And if you forget this is real, I’m happy to remind you,” Spark says.
“I’ll hold you to that.” She defeats a yawn. “Just don’t let me sleep through dinnertime.”
*****
“By the way,” Blanche says after dinner, in the middle of filling the dishwasher, “Nessie’s doing okay now.”
“Who?” Candela pulls her head out of the freezer, ice cream sandwich in hand.
“That Lapras. It happened to be tagged. Adolescent. Officially its name is L074, but Nessie sounds nicer, don’t you think?”
“Whoa whoa whoa, wait.” She takes a big bite out of the sandwich, chews her way through a head-freeze, then says, “The one that beamed me? How did you– When did you–” She huffs and takes another bite.
“You were out for quite some time. Once I was done with Ember I decided to pull some Team strings.” Blanche’s face is expressionless, but her eyes are alight. “Some Mystic members were in the area. They guided Nessie to one of the satellite Centers and healed it. It’s resting up with a few other Water Types. Word is we’ll be able to release them sometime next week.”
“Let’s make a day of it,” exclaims Spark, glomping Candela out of nowhere (she yelps, embarrassingly). He grabs her sandwich, but she’s too shocked to grab it back.
“Um.” She stares and stares at Blanche, waiting for words to come back.
Oh, to hell with it.
She leaps forward, Spark still clinging, and throws her arms around Blanche. “You are absolutely amazing.” She laughs, half from joy and half from Spark nuzzling ticklishly at her neck.
“I’m glad my record remains unsullied.” The amusement in Blanche’s voice is clear.
She snorts. “You don’t even need a record, that’s how amazing you are.”
“Not your best comeback, C,” Spark interjects, mouth full. His hand is sticky on her shoulder but she couldn’t care less.
“I blame you for that,” she replies, reaching blindly behind her to hit his head. “Both of you. Really, what did I do to deserve…” Her voice wavers. “To deserve all… this?”
“Existing,” says Blanche.
“Being Candela,” Spark says at the same time. “Seriously.” The weight on her back shifts as he moves to be in front of her. “That’s all the explanation we’ve got.”
She shakes her head, cuddles further into Blanche. “This is real,” she whispers. “Right?”
Blanche’s hand slips under her chin. She raises her head willingly, eyes closing as Blanche’s lips press firmly to hers. They’ve barely separated before Spark’s hands are on her cheeks and he’s kissing her too. She slumps into their embrace, every nerve in her body alive with heat.
“You know,” she says, seconds or minutes later, “you guys might have to do that a bunch more times before it sinks in.” She looks up at Spark’s laugh, and sees Blanche smiling.
“You really don’t get it,” Spark says, beaming as he ruffles her hair. “Now that we’re a thing too, I can do that all. the. time.” He boops her nose for emphasis.
Blanche nods, smile widening. “You’re stuck with both of us, kiddo.”
She sighs dramatically, over her skipping heart. “Jeez, what a pain.”
I wouldn’t have it any other way.
