Even though I don't use him as a companion as much as I should, I absolutely adore Raul and I think I've only seen him shipped with a courier oc once (even though he deserves all the love) so I'm here to - hopefully - feed all the Raul fans! I kinda wrote this with a courier reader in mind, but it definitely doesn't need to be taken that way! Enjoy!!

After spending so long as a ghoul and surviving on his own, Raul would've never expected to actually find someone who'd love him, especially not romantically.

It's not like he's never been in a relationship before, but his life before war was so long ago that he almost feels like it was a different person altogether.

He doesn't seek out a relationship and although he's not sure he's content with it, he's aware he'll probably die alone.

You take him by surprise, throwing a wrench in the plan he'd begrudgingly decide on for himself.

It's a pleasant surprise though, even if he doesn't realise it initially.

Raul isn't sure when he realises he cares about you, it's hard to exactly pinpoint when he begins appreciating travelling with you, rather than following along for the sake of doing something.

He quickly realises there's never a dull moment when he's with you, which - in spite of a few snarky comments - he actually enjoys. It's a nice change of pace for him.

When the romantic feelings he has towards you become present, he won't tell you, not wanting to cross any boundaries.

He'll just hope and pray you feel the same and you pluck up the courage that he couldn't.

If you do, and you're willing to start a relationship with him, he'll put in all the effort that he can to make sure you feel like you made the right decision.

Of course, he isn't entirely sure why you're wasting your time with him, but he decides to just count his blessings.

He'll put in as much effort as he can to the relationship, wanting to keep you around for as long as he possibly can.

If you have a Pip-Boy, he's more than happy to tinker with it and fix it if it ever starts acting up on you.

He'll also appreciate it if you ever find him something like a box of Sugar Bombs or bubble-gum to satiate his sweet tooth.

Raul isn't too big on PDA, but sometimes he does enjoy being close to you without worrying about anyone watching. Usually he'll put an arm around you if you're sat together at a bar or casino.

Although he isn't usually a big fan of talking about life before the war - he's repeated most of his stories far too many times - he'll happily make an exception for you.

Raul knows he has his flaws - who doesn't? - but he'll do anything to make you happy and it's a relief for you to know that, no matter what, he's completely devoted to you.

I love Companion Benny. I love the idea that he gets huffy-puffy and “just a little” jealous if you switch him out for another companion. He simply cannot cope with the fact that you’d toss him aside like yesterday’s trash for… what, some scribe in rags? A boring-ass first recon guy? A vaquero ghoul? (ok he thinks Raul is kinda cool actually but he won’t openly admit that)?? Benny has STORIES, baby. Interest. Intrigue. You wanna know all the juicy strip gossip? Guess what, you CANT now because you DISMISSED him. How DARE you.

Benny is VERSATILE, baby. His tagged skills are guns, melee, and unarmed. Good luck finding another companion that can do what he can. Yeah Craig “Frowns” Boone can headshot a cazador from a million yards away or whatever, *mumbling* show-off, he would’ve seen that cazador eventually *end mumbling* but Benny can shoot, stab, AND punch. Hey courier, watch this. I’m gonna punch the fuck out of this deathclaw. He does it (you gotta administer a few stimpaks) BUT HE DID IT. And he was only at half health. 400+ health honeybaby, Benny can take a few whacks from those deathclaw freaks. What was that? Showing off? Benny doesn’t have to show off, sugar plum. He’s just that good.

He also won’t complain that his feet are getting tired. Yeah he’ll complain about minor inconveniences and wants you to do something about them regardless if you realistically can or not, but at least he’ll walk miles upon miles in a day and not complain. He also won’t complain about going back to the Lucky 38. (he’ll just complain about not being able to get in there before the Courier showed up.) What, no one else complains about their feet hurting? Uhhhh BOOT-RIDERS. Silly name. But that’s how they rode the Mojave, dig? On their feet. He’s done this before. Experienced.

AND ANOTHER THING. how many companions shout words of encouragement during a fight. Go on. He’s waiting.

Raul Castillo: I saw Amores perros when I was still living in Austin before moving to New York. I saw a screening at the Paramount Theater on Congress Street at the Austin Film Festival. And I knew when I saw Amores perros that I was going to work with Gael García Bernal one day. I just knew it. And it became a reality last year. I got to work with Gael on a film called Cassandro. 12. What’s a quest that everyone hates, but you like?

While I don't think anyone outright hates Come Fly With Me so much as they just find it tedious to do over and over again (and believe me, I Get It), I genuinely do enjoy going through it. Even though I can easily skip over Novac altogether let alone this one quest, I tend to do it when I can anyway because I like the tension that comes with sneaking around in cramped, dark corridors full of invisible guys that can easily kick my ass if I'm not careful. I also like disarming all the traps in the room Hadrian's in. Honestly it feels like a quest that caters to my overly-cautious stealth play style on top of being one of the most interesting side quests in the whole game.

13. Which companion quest did you enjoy the most?

I think it's a tie between Old School Ghoul and I Could Make You Care. I may be biased because Raul and Veronica are my two favourite companions, but imo they're also two of the most well-written companions with equally well-written quests.

While Old School Ghoul physically amounts to dragging Raul around while talking to some old guys, it also acts as a vehicle for him to tell his own stories (which I can listen to all day) and brings up the subject of... well, aging. Of growing up and growing old and changing as your body changes, while remaining who you are despite that. Raul was only around 30 when ghoulification hit, and is basically a young man 200 years older than he should be, and his body began to deteriorate while still in his prime. Despite this, he's tried to make himself Useful TM as both a handyman and a protector, facing the worst of the age of raiders and living long enough to remember it all. When he fails to protect someone, he seems to give in to his perceived uselessness in 'old age', giving up his guns altogether and settling for simply finding purpose in repairing things. It's only when he sees a few older men still doing what they can that he considers not relegating himself to a quiet life, though he still needs the courier to tell him that it's something to admire and that these guys aren't useless or should live a certain way just because they aren't physically the same as they've always been. You can convince Raul to take up his guns again to become a protector during and after the events of FNV, just as he had 200 years ago, and he does a damn good job of it despite his cataracts.

Meanwhile, I Could Make You Care starts with Veronica seeing just how well the rest of the wasteland is doing, from the Followers to the Boomers to even the Fiends (at least in how much trouble they give the NCR compared to the BoS). Exploring the outside world forces her to come to the conclusion that the Brotherhood, her family, is slowly dying because they refuse to change their ways even slightly to become self-sufficient. You have the opportunity to help her find something that will make the Elder wake up, from farming technology to an advanced weapon, but even with evidence the Brotherhood refuses to change. While you can technically convince Veronica to remain, I think it only narratively makes sense for her to leave, whether she ends up joining the Followers or not. She's seen how everyone else has adapted and continues to, and how the quick the Brotherhood is to turn their back on her the moment she challenges their dogma. Even if you can't relate to her on a personal level here, her quest is a powerful conclusion to the Brotherhood's role in Fallout as a whole (by which I mean fo1 and fnv) and serves to symbolize how fast humanity has grown in the last 200 years since the world ended. This quest is so fucking good it makes me wonder why all I ever seem to see from the fandom about Veronica is how much she likes dresses. Sure, it's a cute fun trait and we love her for it, but you'd think that's her main quest instead with how much people sleep on this one.

Mukai: Of course not! But we played a lot of games when I was in elementary. Like the one where you walk using cans with strings attached to them to make something similar to stilts.

Raul: For me, the memorable one was having a secret hideout. I brought a lot of trash and made a secret hideout with the kids from our neighborhood.

Mukai: Secret hideouts do have that soft feeling to them. Changing the subject, in terms of love and romance, which do you like more, chasing or being chased?

Raul: I would definitely be the one chasing. I am not very good with guys who want to be chased.
