Ok, final thoughts on Junji Ito Maniac

It was... fine. Better than the Junji Ito Collection, for sure, though I'd argue the creepy scenes looked... well, creepier there lol Let's be honest, I think it's clear by now it's impossible to recreate Ito's artstyle, it just works a lot better on paper.

The one thing that annoyed me though is how they just... decided to stop some of the stories short? Like, I get some changes need to be made, but it almost seems like they looked at some of the stories and went 'pff who needs these last couple of pages? just throw them out'. So weird.

Anyway, some general (relatively spoiler-free) thoughts on each episode that no one cares about:

‘The Strange Hikizuri Siblings’: love how they started with some dark humor (for some definition of the word humor) to lead you into a false sense of security.

‘The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel’: meh, the original was better

‘Ice Cream Bus’: The ending fucked me up <3

‘Hanging Balloon’: a fascinating mixture of "this is so dumb" and "wait why is this also terrifying 😭", love the non-linear storytelling

‘Four x Four Walls’: another one that's more darkly humorous, it made me feel so claustrophobic jfc

‘The Sandman’s Lair’: oh look, another one that fucked me up <3

‘Intruder’: I find this one weirdly fascinating, kinda would love to know more about wtf actually happened

‘Long Hair in the Attic’: the one that made me regret watching this show, I am officially traumatized <3

‘Mold’: you could not pay me to stay in that fucking house, goodBYE sir

‘Library Vision’: again, not a super fan of the changes, but it's still pretty good. And creepy.

‘Tomb Town’: I really like this one for some reason, but the animation in that scene at the well was... questionable. And the original ending is MUCH better (imo)

‘Layers of Terror’: Oh, my mistake. NOW I'm traumatized for life <3 fuck this show why did I start watching this 😭

‘The Thing that Drifted Ashore’: my least favourite, by far. And I'm sorry, but it looked... bad. Like, really bad 😕

tomoko is a fan of {in her universe} diabolik lovers and would get really attached to yui after getting out her initial bitching since I know tomoko would do that about her video games. think like the people who complain about fem mc's then get attached and become big fans or something

I believe that yui could genuinely help tomoko become a better person. and it's the perfect 'I can make her better/oh no I made her worse' type of situation but yui just loosens up and has fun gf time <2 like showing yui games and the stuff she didn't grow up with and then it becomes a bonding activity!

if they both were at the sakamaki mansion at the same time {just pretend with me} tomoko would like yell at yui/push her away, then her fantasies would be like obliterated before her about the brothers, then it'd be a 'you and me against the world' because I love them. and yui would totally try to help tomoko if yui has been there longer, like hiding tomoko in another room when the brothers try some shit

if they were classmates in the watamote universe {pretend with me again} I think it'd kinda be like yuu and tomoko where they're friends, but if tomoko did... tomoko things I think yui would smack some sense into her, then they stop talking for a while, and yui would probably apologize and then they'd be friends again

yui is exactly the type of girl tomoko would complain about then realize that she's attracted to. tomoko hates on the cute, nice, pretty popular girl who surely has alternate intentions and totally wouldn't just be nice to her for no reason whatsoever. no way no how. why does tomoko want to hold her hand?--

they'd both be weirded out by one another and make wrong footed first impressions, yui thinking tomoko is a bit odd and tomoko being a hater for no reason, then they realize the other is kinda cute and they'd both get too shy to say anything {moreso scared in tomoko's case and yui having to realize that she likes girls {really they'd both have to realize they like girls}}, and I feel like yui would be the first to confess and tomoko would do the anime thing where she'd go all red and her ghost would fly out her mouth {please tell me you know what im talking about}

I have so much art of them together and they're so cute! like the way I've been showing tomoko growing is that she wears more of yui's hair flowers and it's so CUTE and like yui kinda incorporates tomoko's clothes a little idk how to explain it but they start sharing more and it's adorable <2 also tomoko's hair gets shorter because I think it's nice on her :)

the way things expanded is how I just started adding tomie from junji ito. just stick with me. I had a tomie idea of 'tomie like tomoko' so she just stays at home all the time and since my tomie doesn't go outside she doesn't have to worry about being killed

so in my weird jumbled-up stuff it has my tomie {mt}, tomie-accurate tomie {tat}, my tomie's friend {tf}, yui, and tomoko and they're all friends who hang out. it starts with tat coming back to class like in the original story and everyone is uncomfortable, but tf was home sick during the field trip events so she gets tat to skip classes for the day and go hang out at mt's house! tat has that instinctual tomie sense of 'I can be the only one i have to kill her' but then mt doesn't have that reaction so they just go upstairs to lend tat some non-uniform clothes and then tat realizes she can relax for once and then just. be a person

SO the way this connects back to yui and tomoko. all of them are friends who hang out, mt and tomoko always play games together since they share a lot of interests, tat still hangs off to the side since she's still a bit nervous and then opens up and let's herself have fun, tf usually tries to pry tomoko and mt away from the tv screen to play social games like cards or sleepover stuff, and YUI AND TOMOKO ARE DATING IN THIS ONE!!! I think this just boils down to girls being girls and just having fun together as teens lol

I know a lot of this is me just saying 'I love them' but like your honor. I adore them!!!!! also sorry for the long ask/tangent, I have a lot of things to share all of the time and feel the need to explain myself fully ^^;; I love drawing all of them together since they're so cutesy 🧡🧡🧡 I love my wife and her cringefail girlfriend

Late on the game but here are my two cents for 11x19

BEWARE OF SPOILERS AND RANDOM THOUGHTS

1) No Carol always makes me sad, but so 11x19 got a better pacing than 11x17 and 11x18 and lots of screen time for other beloved characters so it felt like a final season episode to me. I liked it.

2) Even though TWD is trying to retcon smart walkers as they were never saw before (cough S1 cough), honestly? I think they did an okay job with it! Especially because we finally got someone talking about the different types of walkers - roamers and lurkers, for example - as they are categorized on the comics. I'm no fan of the comics but that's very important for TWD mitology, as loose as it is. That being said, it really was an okay job because made no sense the smart walker picking up a rock to hurt Jerry instead of just trying to, you know, bite him. Anyways...

3) 🥰 Aaron 🥰 Lydia 🥰 Jerry 🥰 Eugene 🥰 Lance 🥰 no need to say anything else just what a joy these characters and actors bring to me 🥰

4) S11C Daryl really is chanelling S1/S2 Daryl, isn't he? Last week I kind got it why he was behaving the way he did but I didn't like his interactions with Eugene. It was supposed to be funny but why TPTB tried to frame Eugene as a coward? That's not who he is. He hasn't been a self-interested coward in a long time. It's always nice to have little comebacks on final episodes like Aaron talking about Eric and the "Kingdom 2.0/King Jerry" bit but they have to make sense with what's happening on the present. Eugene changed so much, to have another member of TF not recognizing it and mocking him just felt..wrong. Please, Daryl, stop being an asshole. All the love to Eugene and his journey.

5) I'm really enjoying the little voice introductions Judith is doing on 11C, but I wish they decided to to that since 11A so every character got their spotlight. We only have 5 episodes left, so we'll probably see flashbacks from Carol, Maggie, Rosita or Gabriel and Aaron (OGs up to S5), and one for Negan (because), but that leaves so many people out!

And that's it! I'm really excited for next week because 1) TOMI IS BACK and 2) CARYL IS BACK! Yes, it's sad to be more excited about Tomi than about caryl, but I'm still positive. Tired and disappointed, but still positive.

Seen too many people say Tomie was a good mom because "she still loved him!" "she got him that plushie!" "she gave him that letter!" And I'm trying so hard not to use the "yeah but it squicks me out bc she reminds me of my mom esp when people write meta explaining her" card bc I know you're not supposed to project on fictional characters like that, yada yada can't be a hypocrite with what we say to villain stans.

(+) but its just so unhealthy. I hate seeing Hawks feel guilty about "turning his back on her" and "not saving her" when he's been expected to since he was born. And he's not obliged to care about abusive or toxic parents. And who tf says he didn't save her, ahem. She should take some responsibility herself. He literally went through all that training and saved her from poverty. Being proud of him doesn't mean much when she was the one asking why he was even born or what good was he

And it shouldn't erase the hurt, it doesn't make all the bad times "okay" all of a sudden. But I think it hurts because Hawks is so forgiving. He doesn't mind. That one moment does wonders to make her a more preferable parent to him

My feelings keep changing about this line.

Still. Doesn't. Erase. How. She. Hurt. Him. I'll respect Hawks's feelings about this, but I don't think its healthy for him to feel guilty like this. Give him a better family please, its obvious his sense of self-worth came from her.

For me, I agree with your view that Tomie wasn’t a good mother. She was neglective to him at the worst and verbally abusive to him too and has probably been the root to many of Hawks self-esteem issues that we’ve seen him express in adulthood.

I think Tomie’s feeling for Hawks were complicated because she was an abused and mentally ill woman. Hawks was clearly an unwanted child (...and damn does that hurt to write) whose birth caused issues for her and her relationship with his bastard father and we see this expressed many times in the chapter (with both parents berating him for being born like he had any choice in that matter).

However, her going out to buy him the Endeavor plushie and going against the rules set by their abuser to do so also shows us that she does care about Hawks, even if a little. Sure Hawks might have excused it as “to shut him up” but it takes more then just that to go against an abuser and her comment to Hawks about hoping he grew up to be as strong as Endeavor also shows us she cares about him.

Tomie may have loved Hawks but it requires more then just love to be a good mother. I’d argue that Tomie was a bad parent towards Hawks and her treatment towards him shouldn’t just be brushed off because she was caring at times.

Her running away from her problems again, putting herself above the life of her son, shows us that she’s not a good parent, in my opinion. Just like how she put her child at risk by making him homeless, she put him at risk once again and can’t even bring herself to apologise to him for doing so. She’s not ready to face her problems and if she keeps running, I don’t think she ever will be.

Hearing Hawks blame himself for not “saving” his mother hurt me too because it should never be the obligation of the children to save their parents, especially ones who have hurt them in the past and he’s done plenty for her to begin with. However I think (and hope) this was just to showcase to us more of Hawks more negative traits where he tries to blame himself for everything that goes wrong (like he did when the League joined up with the MLA and formed the PLF).

I hope someone tells Hawks there is nothing wrong with cutting ties with someone who has hurt you too much and you don’t have to “save” them at the expense of yourself just because you’re a good person. I don’t want him to blame himself for Tomie anymore.

...Hawks past hurts me so much because it’s such a complicated situation where he was failed by both his parents T-T

My two cents about 11x17 and 11x18, in no particular order and full of spoilers as always..

1. So much stuff happening all at once! I guess that's what happens when you waste 16 episodes on meaningless arcs with unimportant side characters and/or forceful relationships for random spinoffs..

2. Talking about side characters, I miss Tomi. Please give me back my Tomi. I'm glad we had meaningful Lydia screen time though. Jerry + the kids and Eugene + his sense of style are always welcome too.

3. Caryl scenes were...okay, I guess. On its twisted way TPTB addressed some important things. I think everyone and their dog knows caryl is acting weird with one another (Aaron, Gabriel and Maggie looked pretty uncomfortable witnessing another silent argument between them). I'm hoping for a bottle episode so they can finally TALK about their issues and move on and kiss. I'm still positive. Cautious, but positive.

4. I won't dive on this but I liked to see a glimpse of unhinged S1 Daryl. Yeah, yeah, it's not healthy behavior, but I think the guy can be an asshole from time to time when he's under pressure. Yeah, he is a grown man and he changed a lot but he didn't got a brain transplant.

5. Where's Princess?

6. The Commenwealth is supposed to be this huge city but we keep seeing the same 30 people on the same square and half of them are really bad stormtroopers. Lance is the only character I value from their lot. Can't wait to Aaron and company finding out he killed everyone one on Oceanside.

7. TF: I'm not a Maggie fan but girl needs to rest. She's tired as fuck. I can't figure out if Gabriel and Rosita are still together or not. Negan is always inappropriately funny so that's covered. He's also part of the gang now we like it or not; everyone's pretty comfortable around him. Comfortable as possible, obviously, but still. And I'm tired of being mad about it.

I don't think I have anything else to say about these two episodes. I wasn't excited for them and I wasn't expecting any great storytelling so I ended up enjoying just because is TWD. I will always love this stupid show. Let's see what the next 6 weeks brings I guess.
