Who founded S, and when?

In episode 4 of SK8's dub, Reki refers to Joe and Cherry as "founders" of S, and this has led to a pretty widespread conception in the English-speaking fandom that the two of them were... well, S's founders alongside Adam, that it started when the three of them were in school, that they're still involved in it on a managerial level, or even claims that they founded it first and Adam stole it after the fact.

But what is actually being said here?

It's the word "初期メンバー" that was translated as "founders" in the dub, and while it can mean "founding members", in a sense, there is no implication in the word 初期 of actively being involved in creating something, simply that they were the earliest members (it means "in the initial stage.")

Even more telling is Reki's use of みんな - he's talking about a larger group than two people here. He's not setting Joe and Cherry apart as "founders", he's counting everyone who skated at S at the beginning as "初期メンバー" and namedropping the two characters from that era whose names we know and who are going to be significant to the story. (This reference to "everyone" establishing that there's a larger group going unnamed is also cut from the dub; instead Reki says "Cherry, Joe... man, I bet they'd love to go off about that guy.")

Conversely, looking at how Adam is described...

...it's pretty straightforward.

He's also described in his profile on the official website (and consistently in other official sources that use these character profiles) as 創設者, which does mean founder, explicitly referring to "the person who first established something."

Cherry and Joe, meanwhile, are both referred to as Sの実力者のうちの1人, or "one of the big names at S." They're certainly both respected, influential people within the community - recognition they've earned, not something they're set apart for in any "official" capacity. They've never been described in an official source as 創設者, or in any other way that would indicate they were involved in S's creation rather than simply being two powerful people in the community as it exists now.

There are a few other details that tie into establishing this - mainly disproving the notion that Adam stole something already existing. In episode 5, as they're fleeing from the police, Tadashi says this...

...indicating that Crazy Rock was part of a regular police patrol route before Adam was able to use his money/influence to have it removed, something that Cherry and Joe (particularly years ago, when Cherry wouldn't have had the money he's earning now) would not have had the power to do.

And in episode 12, when discussing the change in course, Joe says this:

Literally saying "it became banned", this is wording on Joe's part that would make no sense for a decision he was involved in. He's describing this as something that happened totally separate from him. Early enough that the funeral course was still being used, Joe (and presumably also Cherry) were not making calls about the management of S like this.

There's also a relevant quote from SK8's screenwriter, Ichiro Okouchi:

When considering Adam as a character, I thought he would need someone beside him. If Kikuchi wasn't there, Adam would become a character who would do nothing but talk to himself, and it would be difficult for Adam to manage S alone.

Part of Tadashi's entire conceptualization as a character was because without him, Adam would be running S alone. Early enough in the development in the series that Tadashi hadn't properly been created yet, S was imagined as something solely belonging to Adam.

Adam is S's founder; Joe and Cherry were simply in the initial group of members, along with other people who haven't yet been named.

Additionally, from only a few pieces of dialog it's possible to narrow down when Adam started S - and it wasn't during the DK era. When Joe interrupts Reki in episode 4, he says this:

And the two of them have this exchange at the beginning of episode 9:

Adam, Joe and Cherry are all 26 years old (25 going on 26, in Cherry's case; he hasn't actually had his birthday by the end of season 1, but this is normal for how ages are listed for anime characters.) Seven years ago would have been the end of their last year of high school (Adam, as the oldest of the three of them, would have turned 19 just over a month after graduating high school.)

When Adam skated with Joe and Cherry was seven years ago, before he left for America, and he hasn't accepted any of their challenges since he returned to Japan. In Joe's words, this time skating together was "way before S started."

So, all together:

For some time in high school, Adam, Joe and Cherry all skated together as a group (sometimes with some other friends/gang members.) Seven years before SK8 season 1 takes place, Adam was sent away to America by his father, ending his friendship with Joe and Cherry. Some time after that (presumably upon his father's death,) he returned to Japan and founded S with Tadashi to assist him in managing it, using his influence to remove the abandoned mine from regular police patrols to protect it, and Joe and Cherry were among a larger initial group of skaters who competed at the time. Since then, he's never agreed to a beef with Joe or Cherry despite them challenging him many times, so neither of them have skated with him since S started.

TL;DR - Adam is the person who started S and he and Tadashi were always conceptualized as the only people running it, and the idea that Adam, Joe and Cherry founded it as a trio comes from a mistranslation in the dub.

Just watched an interview where he said the kids would sometimes hide under the trailers and he'd have to pull them out before shooting. Lol.

He also said they were always telling Dafne and Amir off so they probably did a lot of sneaky stuff that they wouldn't tell him. He always knew the two of them were stealing props from the set, though, because they stole too much metal and those were always clinking when the two of them exited the sound stage. 🤣 He said he had no idea why they were so drawn to metal in particular. Lmao.

One thing I'm sure the producers didn't know about is Amir and Dafne etching their names on the brick wall in Cittagazze. Amir said that and I could tell no one knew. Dafne got sold out by Amir because he also said it was her idea. Lol. One of the bricks from the set of Cittagazze has "AW" and "DK" carved in. That's a nice idea, like all the "L + W" on the bench in the Botanic Garden.

Hector stole his rhino from a circus that was passing through the DK,and he found the bear cats in the woods. Cass found Owl as a bb chick that fell out of his nest and was hurt and this happened not too long after her mom died so Owl just became her emotional support animal as well as her fighting bird. Andrew is dyslexic,oh and Quirin is color blind.

Despite the initial embarrassment of answering Seungkwan’s call with a “hi, baby!” only to immediately be met with Jeonghan’s voice (he laughed it off while you were busy being mortified, making some comment about how he didn’t know you liked him like that), you were glad to make your way over to his apartment. Seungkwan had gone over to have dinner and drink with him and a few friends, and you, being the loving partner that you were, told him to just let you know whenever he needed to be picked up and to take care of himself. He left you with a peck on the lips and a promise to call you as soon as he’s done being social for the night, and that had been that. But you could hear his drunk blubbering in the background of Jeonghan calling you from his phone (apparently he’d been trying to stop Seungkwan from calling another one of his friends to tell them he loved them) about how much he loved his friends to Seokmin, who’d just been kind of laughing along with patient “I know”s bubbling up every so often.

And he was still doing it when you showed up to gather your drunken boyfriend before he could say anything incriminating. God knows some of his friends wouldn’t hesitate to use it to tease him later on. You laughed when he tried to plant (another, apparently) a kiss on Seokmin’s cheek, saying something about how much he appreciated and loved him as one of his best friends before gasping the moment he saw you. He had wrapped his arms around you tight, slightly wobbly like a newborn deer since he stumbled on his way over to you, and you could feel him press a tiny kiss against your neck.

“Let’s go home,” you gently pushed him back to look at how flushed his face was.

He turned back to his friends, waving, “I love you guys! I’ll see you tomorrow--”

If he’s not hungover as hell, you thought to yourself as you gently nudged him to get his shoes while you went to hug Jeonghan.

“Thank you for calling me,” you said. “How much did he drink?”

Jeonghan stole one glance to where Seungkwan had sat down on the floor to carefully put his shoes back on. “Plenty.”

“I’ll let you know when we get home,” you told him, already making your way over to give Seokmin a quick hug considering he’d been giving you puppy dog eyes the moment you let go of Jeonghan. “Drink some water,” you told both of them, “and get some sleep, okay?”

You were met with a “thanks, mom,” in response, but the thought was still appreciated. Maybe you could bring Seungkwan back over with breakfast tomorrow, if everyone wasn’t feeling like shit.

The moment you and Seungkwan leave their apartment, he wrapped his arm around yours to link the two of you together. “Thank youuu for coming to take care of me,” he hummed. “You’re always so nice to me.”

You nearly rolled your eyes at that: of course you were nice to him, he was your boyfriend. “Watch your step,” you said to him as the two of you started down the stairs, while you mentally cursed the fact the elevator was out. “We gotta hurry before I get in trouble for parking where I did.”

His eyes narrowed at you. “Did you park somewhere illegal?”

Technically, you weren’t blocking anything, but you’d dealt with plenty of assholes before who’d complain about you staying stopped for a second too long. “Let’s just get to the car.”

Thankfully, getting Seungkwan to your car was easy enough. You ended up cracking his window down as soon as you were back in the drivers‘s seat, and made a comment that he should tell you whenever he started to feel sick because you knew he’d feel bad if he threw up in your car... again. The last time was met with a thousand apologies and a promise to clean things up as if you didn’t do it already (the things you do for loved ones...), followed by a promise to make it up to you however you wanted him to.

He’d started messing with his phone again anyway, finding someone’s contact and dialing it. No hesitation, he put it on speaker.

“Seungkwan?” You could hear Vernon’s voice over the speaker. “Hey?”

Seungkwan mumbled out his other best friend’s name--he always swore that you were his number one now--before going quiet. He babbled immediately about how much he loved him and how much he appreciated having him as a friend.

“Love you, too, but--Didn’t Jeonghan call your ride? Where are you?”

“I’ve got him,” you called out. “Sorry, Vernon.”

“See! They’ve got me!” Seungkwan said. “They came to pick me up because they’re my best friend. They’re always so nice to me...”

“Get home safe,” Vernon said. “I’ll talk to you guys tomorrow, yeah?”

Soon enough, the car had quieted. Seungkwan had rolled down his window, eyes shut as he felt the wind against his face. He looked up after a few minutes, staring at you for a little too long that you could feel it.

“This is a bad time, but... Are you single?” He asked you quietly. He could see where there was a darker patch of skin underneath your collar, barely hidden by it. 

You thought he was joking. You laughed a little, keeping your eyes on the road. “No, Seungkwan, I have a boyfriend. He’s really cute.”

“Oh...” He trailed off. You spared him a glance and he looked like he would have started sobbing at any moment. “I hope you’re happy with him...”

“Seungkwan, why do you look like you’re going to cry?”

“I just--” He started, wiping at his eyes. “I always really liked you a lot, and I was really scared I’d ruin our friendship if I told you. You’re always so nice to me and you listen and you take care of me and--and you’re so nice! Is it Mingyu? Are you dating Mingyu?” He frowned. “I get it... Mingyu’s hot and tall and he can cook and--”

You needed to keep an eye on how much he drank from now on. Just to be sure he’ll be fine. “Kwannie... We’re dating. I was just teasing you.”

He stopped his blubbering immediately, staring at you. “We are?” He cracked a smile after wiping at his eyes. “Good.”

“Okay, we’re gonna get you some water when we get home and you’re gonna lie down, okay?”

He reached out, taking your hand in his and bringing it up so he could press kisses onto the back of it. “Thank you for taking care of me,” he mumbled. “You’re so nice...”

Bringing Seungkwan back up to your apartment was easy enough. All you had to do was promise to hold his hand the entire way and he was more than happy to stick close to you. You immediately got him water while trying to figure out if he ate while he was with Jeonghan and Seokmin, because you might need to get some actual food in him if he didn’t. Drinking on an empty stomach was always a bad idea, but it happened. You get him fed and plenty of water into his system before helping him get dressed for bed. You still had a few things you needed to do before you crashed for the night, but your boyfriend was cozy enough.

“Wait, wait,” he reached out, fingers brushing against your wrist. “You forgot something.”

You turned back, and he smiled at you before tapping at his own lips. Dork. But he was your dork. You planted a quick peck against his lips, and he stopped you before you could pull away. Just to plant one of his own against yours.

“I’m glad I’m in love with you,” he mumbled.

You were glad, too.

Alright. I have VERY little room to talk here as somebody with a Tumblr Audience of like… two people, but bear with me, okay? Because I just can’t stop genuinely fuming over the casting choice(s) in the Mario Movie.

I know it’s the “Topic of the Day(tm)” but I wanted to give my thoughts as somebody with a deep and profound passion for the art of voice acting. They STOLE Mario away from a truly talented man (Charles Martinet I’m so sorry sweetie) and replaced him with CHR*S PR*TT of all people? Anyone with a brain/eyes/common sense can see that this wasn’t because “He’D mAkE a GrEaT mArIo!!!” It’s because he’s the haha funny Marvel dude who basic white teenage boys freak out over no matter how racist and homophobic he continues to be. (Not even to mention that one time he and Jennifer Lawrence blatantly tarnished indigenous Hawaiian land because they thought it was funny??? I guess???)

This isn’t even the FIRST disrespectful blow against veteran voice actors THIS YEAR, either!! Remember the Space Jam 2 trailer? How Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were both played by “Themselves” but Lola Bunny was SPECIFICALLY Voiced “By Zendaya?” That’s just disrespectful to those old voice actors, man. Nobody should be discredited so thoroughly just so that some execs can put butts in seats.

It’s just a giant domino effect leading all the way back to when Disney put Robin Williams’ name in all the marketing material for Aladdin despite his openly telling them NOT to do exactly that. It’s the same reason today as it was 29 years ago; Profit, Popularity, and PUTTING BUTTS IN SEATS.

I had high hopes for this movie (can you believe it?) because after the Sonic Movie did it so right I was really hopeful that Nintendo/Illumination would put the same love into the Mario Movie but… nope! And Chris Pratt as Mario really says that to me. I couldn’t personally give less of a shit about the rest of the cast, (I have problems with Luigi, for the same reasons I said earlier, but I do think that Jack Black as Bowser is a very inspired and smart choice. I also kinda love Seth Rogan DK? No idea why, it’s just SO BAD that it 360’s around to hilarious.) but casting somebody as the voice of MARIO is a big deal, Y’know? Why not just let the guy who’s been doing it for 26 YEARS do it? Oh right, because he wasn’t Marvel McProtagonist character in ShitFart of the Generic White Dude 69. (Can you tell I don’t like Marvel and how it’s ruined the voice acting industry yet?)

Long story short, Charles Martinet is a genuinely FANTASTIC voice actor who deserves more than just a few “Surprise Cameos” in a movie that he logically should’ve been the star of. In the wise words of somebody else I just saw make a great post about this EXACT topic:

“I hope that you’re looking forward to watching Chris Pratt play Chris Pratt in Blue Overalls, because he’s just going to do the same exact performance that he’s BEEN doing since he started acting. When you want to cast Chris Pratt, it’s not because he’s talented or interesting, it’s because you need a famous white dude with an identical sense of humor to all the other basic white dudes he’s played. He doesn’t ‘Play’ characters. He gets typecast as himself every. Single. TIME.”

I’m genuinely furious about this and will never forgive the casting director for this slight against the voice acting industry. I guess in a few years there won’t be any genuine vocal talent left, just a whole bunch of bland, disinteresting, famous people.

Let’s just hope that Chris “Homophobic Republican Christian” Pratt won’t go strutting around like the world’s most egotistical pigeon and try asserting that Mario “Doesn’t like you if you aren’t straight” or that FUCKJNG

Lost Legends

Okay so I read Lost Legends: The Rise of Flynn Rider and general thoughts? It was cute and fun, and I have gripes here and there but I can still recommend it. I don't want to compare it to WOWM because it's like apples and oranges but Lost Legends wins points for me by actually acknowledging the TTS storyline and characters, even though it's kinda brief and not quite as... entertaining.

And before I go into the in-depth spoiler review I'll jot down a few thoughts here: there's a lot to be said about tie-in media and 'canon', but where I think it becomes contentious is where two pieces contradict each other, and whether those contradictions necessitate a canonical hierarchy or cancel something out completely. And the reason I'm bringing this up is because while LL borrows TTS lore it also contradicts it? which is. ironic.

but i'll get into that. Spoilers ahead

Basic Summary of The Plot

Our story starts at the Dark Kingdom, with a short prologue. It's all stuff we already know from the series: King Edmund tries to grab the moonstone, his wife dies, Eugene gets sent away for his own safety. What's funny is that Ms Queen still doesn't get a name, but her Lady in Waiting/Handmaiden gets a name (Maeve), and it's Maeve who really drops the ball on dropping Eugene off at an orphanage instead of raising him as Prince Horace. Go girl give us nothing

And from here the LL timeline begins, as Eugene and Arnie are now twelve year olds (I think?) in an orphanage in Corona. Which is the first contradiction to 'canon' but shelve that thought for now. Eugene and Arnie are good little boys but they're getting too old to keep hanging around and the orphanage needs money for the evil Tax Man, so they decide they'll go off into the world and send some money back when they're rich off their famous adventuring. What happens instead is that The Baron's circus rolls into town (yes that Baron) and Eugene and Arnie decide to try their luck signing up for that gig.

To prove themselves to the Baron, Flynn and Lance have to perform a hazing ritual a heist. The heist is literally just to buy a key from the Weasel but it plays out as this huge dramatic thing with a guard chase which is eternally funny to me because two kids walk into a bar, buy a key and then leave, and it's treated like fucking ocean's eleven. The Stabbingtons try to betray them (those guys are here too) but Flynn and Lance outsmart them, beginning a rivalry for the ages. Also, the pub thugs are all part of the Baron's circus crew. Don't think about it too much.

Anyway, as this has all been going down, Eugene is really interested in getting to talk to this guy with a tattoo of (what we as the audience know is) the brotherhood symbol, which Eugene recognises from the note left with him as a baby. He wants to talk to this dude in the hopes he'll get a clue about who his parents are, but this dude keeps eluding him. He also hasn't had a chance to tell Lance about this yet, so when Lance finds out about it he assumes Eugene only tried to rope him into the circus so he could find his parents and ditch him. Cue an ongoing silent treatment.

Eugene eventually does talk to this guy and he learns that the Brotherhood symbol is from the Dark Kingdom but the Dark Kingdom is gone so he shouldn't bother looking for it. Bummer. And now the Baron is planning a huge heist of the reward money for the Lost Princess' return, and Eugene is getting cold feet. He's been okay with a little bit of thievery so far but this feels like too much for him, and he's not okay with pulling it off but Lance still won't talk to him.

As the plan unfolds, Lance and Eugene reconcile and then they work together to betray the Baron and return the stolen treasure that they stole back to the King and Queen. They get caught by the Baron, escape, then get caught by the guards, but it's okay because they're presented to the King and Queen and when Eugene explains that they felt really sorry about it and promise not to do it again they're let go. And so the story ends on a high note.

Okay so here are the thoughts

Canon Compliance?

The obvious takeaway here is that this story offers you a beautiful pie in the form of the characters you know and love and the established lore, then shoves the pie in your face with things like "Eugene already knows the Dark Kingdom and the Moonstone exist but he never brings this up" and "Eugene betrays the Baron in a very significant way but somehow they'll make up and he and Stalyan will get engaged". Which means that if the integrity of the series is important to you, you'll probably just mentally cross out Eugene knowing about the Brohood/DK/Moonstone.

And imo that's fine! My own approach to this story is a kind of general 'if it works it works, if it doesn't I'll leave it' thing to work my own headcanons around. Because there's a lot of fun things to pluck from, like a new ex-Brotherhood member and other characters that could pop up from Eugene's past and other worldbuilding details.

The Story

The story was pretty short and obviously very tailored towards a younger audience, but it still felt kind of... slow? Mostly because nothing particularly exciting is happening until the big heist and even that feels pretty underwhelming. And of course I don't expect a story like this to be particularly complex and can appreciate its simplicity, but I felt like if it had been longer there could have been more twists to keep things interesting.

For example, the Baron is set up as a character not unlike Gothel, who lavishes praise upon the boys and goes on about how they're 'family' but is obviously just manipulating them and would throw them to the wolves in a heartbeat. Eugene underestimates just how criminal the Baron is, but at no point in the story does the doubt we have in the Baron's sincerity ever amount to anything- Eugene only turns against him because he has a morality crisis, which I'll get to in a minute.

Misc. Thoughts

Okay so one thing I thought was really cute was that each chapter has a little 'quote' from a Flynnigan Rider book, and I wrote them all down so if you've read this far and want me to post those separately lemme know. Anyway I just thought it was a very cute touch.

An honourable mention goes to every time Stalyan shows up, she doesn't really do anything in the story yet still is somehow the only character holding the brain cell. Rapunzel gets an indirect cameo by Lance and Eugene stumbling upon her tower and going "Whoa that's Crazy. Anyway. " which is amazing, and Cassandra even gets a little mention by the Captain! And to answer the question nobody asked, there's a chameleon running around Corona because she's an escapee from the circus, and Pascal's mom's name is Amélie!

Characters - okay really just Eugene

Eugene/Flynn is the title character of the book and we get the story exclusively from his POV, so there isn't a lot to say about Lance. On the one hand while I can acknowledge that this is a story about Flynn, not Lance, there's a few choices that feel like a missed opportunity at best given that this book really was an opportunity to explore Lance's character in a way the series never really does.

And it feels extra egregious when the plot demands conflict between Eugene and Lance, because while the emotion between them is engaging when it's happening, at other times it just feels like a convenient way to shove Lance offscreen again. (As a side note, as contrived as the conflict is these are also two twelve year old boys so. Can't blame em too much).

Also, Eugene coming up with the name "Lance Strongbow" on Lance's behalf while he's unconscious is one of those backstory things I'm not going to be acknowledging, thank you.

The Robin Hood Dilemma

Something I touched on after reading What Once Was Mine is that Eugene's characterisation prior to the movie isn't something writers seem to really like... dealing with. And it kind of makes sense that the author received a lot of characterisation notes from Chris Sonnenburg, because little Flynn does feel very similar to the Eugene we know; only the Eugene we know is an adult man who has since grown out of his Flynn Rider persona. But the Flynn Rider persona he needed to grow out of isn't something that ought to be cast aside entirely!! Stop being cowards!!

Taking a step back, the whole premise of the book is kind of a paradox- because Eugene needs to become Flynn Rider before he can learn to embrace his authentic self, but Flynn Rider isn't hero material, he isn't a good guy, he's not the right protagonist for a story for kids. So what we get isn't Flynn Rider, it's really just Eugene trying on a new name. That works for the beginning of the story, because he is just Eugene trying on a new name, but he doesn't grow into it.

At the beginning of the story, Eugene is an orphan in a poor but still functional orphanage run by a kind old lady, and he is surrounded by nice little boys. Eugene is motivated to leave and get a job by a desire to send funds back to the orphanage, and when he joins the Baron's circus he's taken aback to learn he's among thieves. Here's where I thought: okay, this might get interesting. We might be getting a G-rated 'angel falls from heaven' story about Eugene being morally corrupted by the Baron, of learning that the world outside is tough and he needs to look out for himself first and foremost-

but no. The Baron shares his plan to steal the reward money for the Lost Princess, because all the people he's surrounded himself with are already criminals who don't give a shit, but Eugene thinks that this is going too far! What about that poor lost princess who people need an incentive to search for? (he's like, projecting about his own parent issues which is fair, but still). And so the story ends with Eugene turning on the Baron to return the money to the "right" people (aka the king and queen of a kingdom?? okay) but he takes a single golden egg for himself so he can send it to the orphanage.

Which is all sweet and nice but. He still has to become Flynn Rider, asshole extraordinaire. He still has to lose his morals to the point where he'd take an inexperienced young woman to a pub that he, in this book, recognises is a dangerous place in the hopes that he can ditch her. He still has to go and become a wanted thief and rejoin the Baron and then ditch Stalyan on their wedding night.

The reason I'm going on about this so much is that the appeal of Eugene to me is that he is this good guy who wants to be a better person for the people he loves, but that means recognising that he has behaviour he needs to change, and his development is meaningful for that. Watering him down to a righteous Robin Hood hero does him a disservice.

i just finished the rise of flynn rider and i have a lot to say so spoilers under the cut 😌

i just said this on discord but as long as i dont think about it for more than 3 seconds it was really good!

lance and eugene 😭 i love them so much the author wrote their dynamic so so SO well and theyre so cute i love them

i think the plot overall was really good and i liked the thought behind it :') also EUGENE SAYING THAT LANCE IS HIS HOME 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 YES IM CRYING

also all the flynn rider quotes were SO good i loved them all so much and omg you could really tell that eugene based his entire personality on those books lollll i love it

okay now im gonna be really bitter but its not because i didnt like it! its just because the inconsistencies are what stick in my mind the most 😔

first of all i was sad to find out that anthony the weasel was actually his name, ive always thought that everyone else just called him anthony but eugene called him the weasel to be an asshole

ALSO i love having the characters that already exist in the book but like,,, having the snuggly duckling guys working with the baron kinda makes no sense? like they were all thugs but like they should have just always been at the snuggly duckling bc the baron still has his empire during the series but the snuggly duckling guys are clearly Not A Part Of It which kinda confuses me bc like? how and why did they all get out and go to the snuggly duckling :(

also everything with the baron is kinda.... huh. like clearly it is no longer a circus and is actually just like a crime family by the time the series happens so like,.,.,.,,,.,.,...,. why would he make that switch? also he was acting super out of character the whole time and i know that was partially the point but also when he was smiling and hugging ppl i was like "ok damn baron who are you"

also stalyan hhhhhhh what how why when. the baron clearly hates eugene and by association stalyan would probably hate him too so when and why would they get ENGAGED ugh

this threw me off even more than no time like the past but at least this i can regard as Not At All Canon akdsjfhad

Eret and DK were standing guard in the fifth wing outside of the room where they were housing the criminals. Corpse and Toast, LilyPichu and Fuslie, and Peter and Edison would occasionally come in to throw another person into the brig.

Their comms lit up. “Triage to Beta. Triage to Beta,” Tina said.

“Beta here.” Eret’s smooth voice came over comms. “What do you need Delta?”

“Some of the upper district kids are getting antsy. They don’t trust us. Some kid, 12-11-04, Deo has them staying put, but it’d really help if you were here. Ease the tensions. They aren’t very happy that the heroes aren’t here.”

“Of course they aren’t. Deo? One of the kids?”

“District 12.”

“Roger. Beta to Alpha.”

“Present,” Hafu said.

“Did you catch that?”

“Yes. I’ve already sent Dumbdog to replace you.”

“Pleasant. Thank you. Beta out.”

“Triage out.”

“Delta are you there?” Hafu asked.

“Yes Ma’am!” xChocoabrs voice flew over the wires.

“How’s the child extraction going?”

“Smoothly. There’s a lot more kids than we thought there were.”

“Is there a med-bay we need to worry about?”

“No. The kids get fixed up in the main room after their fights and get sent back to their cells.”

“Pleasant.”

“I know.”

“Alpha out.”

“Delta out.”

Hafu readjusted her grip on her shorty. She was thankful none of them had needed to fire a single shot yet. Let’s hope it stays that way.

Alpha and Charlie team had corralled all the adults into staying in their seats. Wait-staff had been instructed to continue serving dinner as normal.

T’was a hostile dinning environment to say the least.

Hafu, Wolfabelle, Steve, Koji, and Sleepy were walking around the perimeter keeping everyone in their seat and inside the main room. And Yvonnie, Elaina, and Ellum were walking around the room taking pictures of every table, so they could report everyone of them.

The high profile characters tried to hide their faces, but that didn’t really work.

Once Elaine reported that that had at least one picture of every table she stood in the middle of the ring and shouted. “Attention! We will escort you all out of the building one table at a time. You will all be free to find your cars and return to your homes. Please be patient with us as this will take some time.

Hafu grabbed Steve and they two of them stood on either side of the doors while everyone else from Alpha and Charlie starts leading groups one at a time to the door. They let remind the business men to have a nice night, and remind them that this place is very illeagal, so they should be very careful when complaining about being held hostage.

Hafu tuned her comm to the common frequency. “Beta Team? Do you have a status update?”

The team converses on comms for twenty seconds.

“We have them all in a back room. Everyone is doing final sweeps.” DK said. “We have 37 here.”

“Good. Make sure they are all in binds so we can get them onto the school bus.”

“Yes Ma’am.”

She pivoted, conversation over. “How’s extraction going?”

“It’s going good,” 5up said. “There are a few that don’t like vigilantes, but they get over it quickly.”

“How much more time do you need?”

“I’m making good time. xChocobars came finished with the level 1s and came to help me.”

“Same over here,” Rae piped in. “We’re done with level 3 and only have a few more level 4 cells.”

“Understood. Delta?”

“Yes Hafu?”

“Can you guys make sure that all the kids are groups by District?”

“We’ve been doing that. The older kids are helping us place them in little groups. Sometimes friends don’t want to leave each other, but for the most part it’s good.”

“You have everyone logged?”

“Everyone so far. We have a line piling up, but it’s going quickly.”

“Start finding out how many kids are in each District and grouping them so we can take them home.”

“Okay! And 1-30 stay together?”

“Yes. Thank you Tina.”

“No worries!”

“Hi Niki.” Eret pushed his way to the table. “Cupcake?”

She handed him one with a galaxy swirl. “The upper level kids are over there.” She pointed to a group of kids standing off to the side. “12-11-04 and 27-10-01 are trying to comfort them.”

“Do they have names?”

“Deo and Sammy. Deo actually likes you guys though.” A brunette girl handed a small child a cupcake. “Have a cupcake,” she says to another boy.

“Thanks,” Eret says before she ran off. Eret nodded to Niki before heading over to where the upper District kids where congregated.

“Oh it’s you,” Sammy says.

“It’s me.”

“Eighty-Seven.”

“If you won’t use my name, I prefer Captain Sparklez’ son, but sure. Let’s go with that.”

“Where are the heroes?”

“Not coming.”

“Told you so,” Deo muttered.

Eret gave a terse smile and opened his arms out wide. “Welcome to District 67. Were you don’t report things to Hero HQ even when you really should.”

“What do you mean don’t report?” Sammy demands.

“Someone might have reported suspicious activity at this area, but Hero HQ didn’t notice. Hafu did though.”

“Look at how many kids are here.” Sammy gestures wildly to the field. “I’ve been missing for months. My parents would have reported!”

Eret puts his hands up to calm down the rest of the group who were shouting similar concerns. “And they probably did. The news was full of kids getting snatched. The heroes just didn’t look any further than District 50.”

“What?”

“I’m very sorry to tell you this, but the reports fell off in Districts 30 to 50. No one below there bothered reporting. They don’t have enough faith in heroes, but they did have faith that word of mouth would eventually get to their local vigilantes. And the heroes probably assumed you’d be local. They never looked down here.”

“So what are you? Vigilantes?” one girl from the crowd asked.

“Yes.”

She scoffed. “I want a hero. I won’t feel safe until I have a hero.”

“Look. We’re going to get everybody out. Get all the evidence. Then we’ll go to Hero HQ. You just need to trust us all enough to get on a bus and we will get you to a hero. Those from District 1 to District 30 will go to hero HQ and everyone else will be dispersed among the vigilantes. Sound good? You just need to wait a little longer, and you should be home in 48 hours.”

“I want a hero now.”

“Well I’m the closed you’re going to get,” Eret said. “My dad’s Captain Sparklez. You know me.”

“Shouldn’t you have told your dad?” Deo asked. “Shouldn’t there still be hero back up?”

“Absolutely not. They come in here and take over.”

“Would that be such a bad thing?” the girl demanded.

Eret looked her dead in the eye. “You have may have faith in heroes, but just because dad lives in 87 doesn’t mean he helps us day-to-day.”

“So you didn’t tell your dad when you found a warehouse full of kidnapped children that had been all over the news?” Sammy asked incredulously.

“I didn’t find it. And by the time I was told about it, telling dad would have hindered our ability to do anything about the warehouse. You’d have been stuck here for another few months at least. Heroes have procedures that, yes keep people safe, but they also take forever; especially with a job this big.”

“Fine.”

“I’m not asking you to like it. I’m asking you go sit tight, not run away, and wait for us to get you to where you’re going.”

Sammy huffed.

Deo put his hand on his shoulder. “Do you know how to get back to District 27 from here?”

“No,” he muttered.

“Then just deal with it okay?”

The girl from earlier asked quietly, “You’ll take us home?”

“We’ll take you back to Hero HQ once we have the place cleared out. The Heroes will take you the last leg of the journey.”

The three busses rolled up, two stayed at the field and the third drove towards the warehouse.

Eret went and stood on a box and clapped to get everybody’s attention. “As you all know, we’ve slowly been moving you all so you’re with other kids in your District. We’re going to start taking you home. As you can see we have three busses here. Two will be for the kids in the upper thirty. Everybody else will be put under the guide of one of our vigilantes. We’re crunching the numbers and later we will call out with more information. Thank you for being patient with us as we process everything and everyone. The upper thirty can make their way to Syykuno and Rae. Please remember that there are a lot of you and some seats will have to triple up.”

Deo took the lead of the upper 30 District kids. He didn’t know who Rae and Syykuno were, but some of the level 3’s did, and Deo knows the colour yellow, he knows what a school bus looks like.

Deo ran to the backseat with Sammy and they both collapsed onto the vinyl.

“Wonder where that third bus went.”

“Probably to wherever they’re keeping the dudes that stole us.”

“Oh those guys. Fuck those guys.”

Au below the cut! 

Alright, Flute Anon here! And.,,before we begin. I'd like to clarify some things

- 1010 can work independently outside of NJ and have their own personalities 

- Kliff is innocent, complete and utterly innocent. Neon is considered the villain...more so anti villain here for a reason. 

- Anti Villains are villains with heroic attributes or intentions that end up with them becoming the villain. Different from a hero turned villain when their actions become...actually malicious for malicious reasons. 

Before the events of the game, Neon is slowly growing disillusioned to NSR, he sees unique artists get turned down time after time after time, artists that could greatly help the city's energy source. After awhile, Neon goes from being the most loyal member of NSR to planning the entire company's destruction, all in the name of remaking it to make Vinyl City a better place. 

The start of NSR begins quite similarly, although in the Lights up Audition, the only 1010 member to appear is Rin, who is the last before Tati to turn down B2J. And NSR plays out very similarly afterwards...until after beating DK West for the first time. 

Going back to the Sewers to hear Kliff's briefing on Yinu doesn't just start like that, but with a cutscene. 

As soon as Mayday enters the base, Kliff screams, and B2J runs to the briefing room for his aid. Kliff is on the floor, panting as he points to a pile of boxes, yelling about something being in there. Zuke laughs and tries to reassure him by saying 'It's probably just Ellie'...until Neon appears. 

Neon has never once appeared to the public in this AU, so none of the Rock Revolution gang know who he is, so he only introduces himself as Benjamin, commenting on how much he'd love to join and that he hates NSR, also saying that he's B2J's #1 fan. 

Kliff grumbles and then says he's already claimed that title, so Neon just goes for #2. 

Zuke asks if he runs the old toy store Ben's Toys, Neon simply laughs and shrugs, but his hands started to shake, he offers to help B2J with his 'sticker collection'. 

So basically, there's a mini gamemode called Ben's rally. Neon will send out robots that he totally 'stole' for Zuke and Mayday to fight, and this gamemode will go on until either Zuke or Mayday loses all health. The longer you last the more rewards you get...like getting special stickers for moves, or just really powerful stickers overall.  Neon gets his own room for this, with the main idle animation being him working on a huge piece of machinery...which totally isn't the Flying Factory. (You can also unlock special tracks for the Rally after boss fights!!) 

Often there's a rare event where Neon will be in the briefing room talking with Kliff, but that's post game stuff. 

So..about the Metro District..

1010 is led by Rin/White now, but the district is slowly getting more chaotic and hard to handle without Neon's aid.

However...Neon still does care about them even though he's unable to help them right now, so he warns 1010 beforehand for B2J coming along. This makes the 1010 fight SO much harder. Regardless, Neon isn't leading the charge so B2J still beats 1010 quite easily. 

The issue is...1010 doesn't have the flying factory, they still have a factory but not THE flying factory, leaving 1010 temporarily dead after the fight. Mayday and Zuke honestly don't realize what they had just done, cause this will SERIOUSLY affect some future stuff. As a sendoff before he self destructs, Rin warns B2J about Neon. 

So, that's kinda it for Neon's importance...up until the Tatiana fight. 

Neon comes in while Kliff is briefing and asks if he can follow B2J, Zuke is like 'wtf dude no' and Neon just looks...SO SAD. 

Alright, so Tati fight happens normally, and Kliff enters! Except it isn't revealed he's the villian, in fact, he's panicking, frantic, he yells about Benjamin for a moment before being knocked out by...guess who? Neon. (Rip Kliff ??-??) 

Everyone is slightly confused, besides Tatiana who seems relieved for Neon's return, up until Neon is like 'Hold up bih', and explains how this Rock vs EDM fight has been utterly useless, that they were causing more destruction than what was needed. 

And Tati is like 'o wow you agree with me' until Neon fucking turns and just...goes off. He's far more pissed with NSR than he is with B2J. He tells Tati how one brain celled she was for never allowing variety in music, how they still could've kept order with that variety, and how she's a hypocrite who's still stuck in her own past. (Although NJ is still kinda stuck in his own past.)

And then...the quote before the cut exists, and the fight with NJ begins...sorta. 

The tower shakes, and low and behold, the flying factory...exists, Neon jumps through the window and hops on, and begins trying to destroy the tower. This is where you get to have the NSRtists reclaim the districts, and the big shakalaka bam thing happens,,, and the Tower fuckin pUNCHES the Flying Factory. And NSR is finally over!

...Or is it? 

As the sun rises, Neon and the Flying Factory arise, he begins to break down, realizing that his boys were more so...dead as well. His mind goes from trying to destroy the threat to Vinyl City and then to just...NOT FAILING. So guess what he does? He goes over, and using the partially damaged Factory, he rips the Grand Qwasa out from its place, telling them all how much he is going to beat the SHIT out of NSR as a whole. The Qwasa, as a bit of a metaphor, is raised to cover the sunrise, and Neon laughs, before the Qwasa explodes...sort of. 

Let's just say he...fused with it. That's the best explanation. 

Overloaded with the Grand Qwasa's energy has left Neon far more powerful, though also losing most of what he stood for in the process. He's less intent on not failing, and protecting Vinyl City, but more so just...destroying NSR. No reason to anymore, no reason his corrupted mind could think of, but just to destroy it. 

So, rallying the NSRtists together, B2J and the rest of NSR goes to beat Qwasa-corrupted Neon into the ground. 

The first phase is destroying some of Neon's robots, Mama and DJSS are fighting off Neon's factory in the background, before the phase ends and they're completely thrown off. 

And, in the phases it goes between all of the NSRtists fighting with you, to just B2J and a corrupted, sobbing Neon. He's realizing what he's done, but he can't stop it now, now matter how hard he's trying to resist the corruption. He just wants to go back to his boys. He just wants things to be normal again, that's all he wanted in the first place, all he wanted was for Vinyl City to be safe. 

And then with one last Showstopper, the Grand Qwasa and Neon are separated..although all that's left is Neon's head, that seems...still active. (MAYDAY KICKS IT AWAY.) 

I'd say post game there'd be a small secret cutscene where he went on about being sorry like Wheatley did in Portal 2....just a talking head vibin in da alleyway. 

And uh...if you actually read through all of this..I kinda want to thank you, a lot? NSR has meant a lot to mean the past few months and it's been helping me get out of my social shell a lot more. Especially you guys, Scrapped Records fam, you all are so cool and have way better ideas than me.
