2. They hate Robin or Lucas.

Neither of these characters have done anything wrong. I've never seen anyone justify their dislike of Robin for a non-ableist or non-homophobic reason (because they don't exist), and Lucas, one of two Black main characters in the show, gets criticised so harshly and so often compared to White characters who have done inarguably worse things. Y'all don't realise how damn quick you are to antagonise a Black boy in situations where he's behaving in entirely reasonable and rational manners, like when he was "mean to El" in season one when he's doing what the majority of people in his situation would do, meanwhile I hardly ever see people calling Mike out for being so needlessly rude to Max in season two. in love with the fact the Halloween costumes haven't left (and Hunter's still in his wolf shirt). you'd think the crew would have them change into clothes more tonally appropriate for trying to stop the end of the world and having breakdowns and emotional conversations and personal revelations and catharsis but NOPE. sometimes scary/important shit happens when you are unprepared and aren't dressed for the occasion and you gotta deal with it!! unironically love that. they're KIDS, MAN!

I am so grateful honestly because their costumes fucking SLAP!!! Not an ugly fit in sight. And you're right, it really emphasises just how young and carefree they really are. Just a bunch of silly kids who who were torn away from their silly Halloween party and unexpectedly thrown into this madness.

Because I'm Like This, I've also been thinking a lot about the symbolism of their outfits since TTT aired. I'm probably reaching and none of this was unintentional but it's still fun to think about.

Gus, dressed as Captain Avery, the protagonist of the awesome Human Realm book that helped him cope with missing his Dad. The book with the line "We'll find a way back. We have to." A line that apparently stuck with Gus enough that he immediately made the connection once Hunter said it. I like to think the resilient hopeful tone of Cosmic Frontier was something that helped Gus keep his spirits up.

Not to mention that it's Sci-Fi, something that is so distinctively human. Gus, the boy who has defined himself as a passionate human enthusiast, whose dream is to become an ambassador to their Realm, is gonna shine in the final episode wearing a symbol of all his enduring optimism and passion and imagination.

Willow is a peculiar case. She is, ironically, a girl who was once considered half a witch now wearing a big loud declaration that she is, in fact, a witch in full. And then some!! It's not in the same vein that Luz and Amity are dressed as magic girl-esque witches. Willow's got the whole ooky spooky cackling and spiderwebs kinda witch vibe. Well, to be specific, it's a bit of a witch/devil hybrid.

Like let's get it out of the way, she looks like Evelyn. The stripey tights, the jagged skirt, the fact that her costume was originally meant to be red, just like the witchy cutout that hung above them during the hayride. Although only the last episode will tell if anything is gonna come from this. Maybe it's just a coincidence. But I think it's very interesting that she's dressed as a stereotypical reflection of how the Human Realm views witches/demons. And then there's Belos, a human man who is defined by his black and white perception of witches as the scum of the earth. He believes they're wild, they're evil, they're dangerous, they're monstrous. Which, at first glance, doesn't represent Willow at all. But then FTF happens, and the viewer is reminded that Willow's magic can be unstable. That she can be dangerous. She can be monstrous.

However, there's also that little W patch on her arm, reminding us that she may be a witch but she's also a silly girl named Willow wearing a personalised Halloween costume. She's not defined by being dangerous. She's so much more than that. She's full witch Willow and she's going out with a bang.

Amity is dressed as Hecate, Azura's rival turned friend turned heavily wlw coded best friend (I guess???), which obviously mirrors Amity's own role when the story initially began. There's a bit of significance linked to the Azura books and what they mean to Amity. Namely, from Lost in Language, when her chilly exterior began to crack. Her secret hideaway in the library was discovered, which acts as a representation of the person that she really is, but desperately tries to hide. And, on full display, was the Azura books. She had all but one, which Luz allowed her borrow. The missing piece that set Amity's whole motivation to change into motion.

That book was the tentative olive branch between her and Luz. And, with Luz's influence, it kickstarted her journey into becoming a better person, taking control of her own life, cutting toxic relationships, repairing others, etc. It's possible that Amity wouldn't be the kind and happy girl she is today without the Azura books. So, her diving into the finale while representing those books is very sweet. Also....I love her Hecate outfit. Its SOOOOOO pretty. The boots, the dress, the celestial aesthetic!!! Serve!!!!

I feel like I don't need to go that in depth about the significance of Hunter's costume. We all get it. He discovered Cosmic Frontier when he was struggling to come to terms with his status as a grimwalker, which severely clouded his sense of identity. Hunter not only connected with O'Bailey, but it gave him the opportunity to see a representation of a thing he hated about himself from a more empathetic perspective. Hunter accepted O'Bailey, Hunter loved O'Bailey, Hunter became obsessed with O'Bailey. The book was probably a big stepping stone in accepting himself. Hunter cannot ignore the fact that he's a grimwalker. He can't sweep it under the rug. But he can embrace it. As somebody who is tied to the legacy of Caleb Wittebane against his will, it must be comforting to feel like he can latch on to a cool space hero, rather than an anonymous witch hunter from 400 years ago.

Hunter's sense of identity is very important to his arc. So, the T-shirt is also very fitting. Hunter's gonna have his final confrontation Belos, who constructed him as a doll of someone else, while wearing the wolf T-shirt he personalized himself and a homemade O'Bailey costume. Because his name is Hunter and Hunter loves wolves, sewing and Cosmic Frontier.

And Luz....man. I feel like there's SO MUCH significance to Luz ending this story dressed as the Good Witch Azura and I don't even think I can do it justice. It's like....that's her. Azura means everything to her. It's shaped her into the person she is today. The Good Witch Azura is the reason Luz loves magic. And if Luz didn't love magic, she never would have stayed in the Demon Realm. It brought her closer to Amity. It's what inspired her to read and write and draw and imagine and create. It's an outlet for all her passion for stories. It was the thing that comforted her and brought her genuine hapiness during the darkest point in her entire life. It reminds her just how much Manny loved her. It reminds her just how much she loves Manny.

Luz is a character who is defined by all this relentless love and almost all of it can be linked back to Azura. Fiction, art, magic, family. She's a kid who has endured so much pain but she has such a capacity for appreciating the eccentricities of the world around her. She's full of light.

It's worth noting that Luz began the story having a hard time differentiating fantasy from reality. As such, using the Azura universe as a form of escapism was a little unhealthy. However, that's not the case anymore. Luz has matured into a much wiser person, but that doesn't mean she has to let go of her love for fantasy stories. She's found this perfect balance where she can accept the world as it is, while still being able to indulge in her storybooks in a healthy way. I don't think Azura will ever stop being an important aspect of her life.

Luz is carrying the memory of Manny with her until the finale. She's weird and she has always been loved for being weird and once this is all over, she'll keep being weird and she'll keep being loved for it.

Ohhhh that’s a good one!!! I love all the music associated with the Lake Guardians—it’s got fun modal mixture stuff which (to make a long and very nerdy explanation short) does some really interesting things with colors in my head :3 so I suppose I will respond in kind by telling you a few of my overall favorites! (I say “overall” because singling out one is virtually impossible. Pro-tip: NEVER ask a musician for their one singular favorite piece—some of them may have an answer for you but the vast majority of them will cry. Me included.)

Alola Region Theme ~ Pokemon Sun and Moon

I have a ridiculous amount of nostalgia for this theme despite Gen 7 only being two generations ago. I love the chanting in the intro and the melody is beautiful and memorable—it’s a leitmotif that gets reused in other parts of the soundtrack like the player’s home, the summit of Mount Lanakila (which houses the Pokemon League) and the end credits. It also ALWAYS takes me back to Sun and Moon hype season—I have very vivid memories of waking up to new trailers on Pokemon’s official YouTube channel and getting immeasurably excited, and they often used this theme which played a big part in that. Despite being a certified Music Bitch I’m not really the type of person who cries while listening to music that much, but this is one of those themes that CAN make me cry if I hear it at the right time. A bit odd considering this theme is nothing if not joyous but it is what it is.

Cynthia’s Theme ~ Pokemon Diamond and Pearl

This theme has been memed to hell and back because of Cynthia’s uncanny ability to strike fear into the hearts of children and adults alike with piano alone, but other than the initial jumpscare that those sixteenth-note triplet octaves in the bassline sometimes give me in the intro, I unironically think it’s a beautiful piece of music. To me it sounds like it could be a piece on the program of a piano student’s senior recital—I don’t know if I can ever hope to learn how to play it myself with how fast it is (not to mention my teeny tiny hands that can’t even reliably reach 9ths ;_;), but goddamn if I don’t want to try. Also obligatory shoutout to Volo’s battle theme from Legends Arceus because this is what it’s based on and it is excellent as well :3

Route 10 ~ Pokemon Black and White

This is my favorite route theme in the entire Pokemon franchise, no questions asked. It plays on the very last route you visit before challenging the Pokemon League and it’s got a bittersweet tone that complements that feeling perfectly. Unfortunately in Black and White 2 this route got destroyed in a landslide—but this theme is still accessible via talking to a post-game NPC (but only during the winter months in-game, sadly). There’s also a bit of musical symbolism insofar as this game’s Route 1 theme is in C major whereas this one is in the parallel C minor. I love this because it fits with the circumstances of your journey at that point being a bit darker than your standard Pokemon fare—you’re challenging the Pokemon League not for personal ambition, but out of necessity because Team Plasma will take over if you don’t. The key difference is a testament to your Trainer’s growth and I love it so so much.

Slumbering Weald ~ Pokemon Sword and Shield

I wasn’t as big a fan of Sword and Shield’s music as much of the rest of the community seemed to be—to my ears at least, the soundfont of these games sounds a lot thinner and weaker than that of previous generations and there weren’t a lot of tracks that really hooked me right off the bat (though this only applies to base SwSh—the DLC music redeemed the soundtrack in my eyes because there’s a LOT of good stuff in there). This piece, however, was one of the exceptions to that—one of my FAVORITE musical ideas is any melody that makes heavy use of the leading tone (the 7th scale degree, which is the last one before the tonal center and it has a very sensitive, sometimes bittersweet quality to it because of this), specifically the note sequence 7 -> 1 -> 5 (in solfege this would be ti -> do -> sol; or G# -> A -> E in A major which is the key this piece is in) and this track straight up repeats that sequence over and over in that starting melody which turns into a background ostinato as the strings take over. The rest of the track holds up too—the synths mesh well with the strings and gentle percussion and even the howls work well melodically—I’m also a big fan of the diminished harmonies underneath them in what I’d call the B section of the piece; those elements along with the muted choral chanting really adds to the mysterious vibe of the winding forest this track is meant to represent.

Again, this is not at ALL an exhaustive list of my fave pieces (my favorites playlist on my phone is currently housing a whopping 435 tracks I’ll have you know) but I hope you enjoyed this peak into my musical tastes regardless!

I’m sorry, I love the show, but the heavily white-straight-male point of view story telling is killing me. It’s just too much now. Completely botched character development for Criston, Alicent and Daemon (I broke it down in the Reddit post below). Of course cishet dudes won’t find it bizarre that a grown ass knight just miraculously fell madly in “love” with the younger princess, and felt entitled enough to ask her to leave her inheritance to the 6 kingdoms and everything else behind just to be owned by him, and when refused felt justified enough to completely betray her and brutally murder a gay man because his feel feels are hurt. Of course they will also feel that Alicent’s character arch so far makes perfect sense, because of course when your first love and best friend withheld details of her sex life to you to protect herself, that only means “she will kill your children when she’s Queen”, and of course the only normal reaction of a young woman struggling with the great burden of womanhood in this situation is to turn into a power player for her son to be king, fight to the death of her best friend if she must. And of course, why wouldn’t the charming Rogue Prince just kill a woman for fun? I mean they don’t even know each other, and she’s from one of the most powerful noble houses that could threaten the crown’s peace, and she literally is a HUMAN BEING that had done nothing to wrong him ever, and in the original stories Daemon wasn’t even in the Vale when she died. But nahhh forget all that, us men just get to kill some bitches cos she annoying and I want a new wife. The mensies have already starting to call her “the bronze bitch” unironically lmfaooo oh so funny.

And of course, the one non-white woman, the only major Black woman character who only idk trained and rides the oldest largest dragon’s scenes got cut the most. Laena Velaryon doesn’t even have like 30 mins of screen time put together throughout this show. The actors got all the hate from the racists, but the show and white dude show runners get all the credit for “dIvEsItY cAsTiNg”, and if we dare say anything about it all the racists and sexists will scream “WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT!????” And last not least of course, the one freaking legitimate non-male heir to the throne has to be twisted and turned and demonized into a hysterical “not skinny” mess and eaten alive by a dragon, just to prove once again that no woman can ever hold the highest power in even a fictional world, No no no don’t you know women are all crazy or will all go crazy 100% of the time?

Sorry for the rant. Im so sick and tired of it. Yes I do enjoy the show and love the dragons and all that, and yes I realize stories like this in 2022 are significantly better from the ones we get before, and yes I get progress take time and blah blah blah. I’m just a little traumatized having witness all of this, and how much such methods of storytelling with these white patriarchal values appeased to the cishet men. I’m just sick of it, that’s all. How I feel about this character

I LOVE HIM!!!!

I adore him, unironically. A lot of people hate him solely because he’s a bad person, and to me that’s narrow-minded thinking. He’s fun BECAUSE he’s bad. He’s fun BECAUSE he’s a horrible person who hurts other people and doesn’t care for their feelings.

He’s pathetic, a disaster, and unironic mess. He’s like 50, trapped in the body of a toddler, constantly slapfighting with kids because he’s petty and can’t keep ANYONE out of his relationship drama with a certain homophobic rat. I’ll get into the relationship/ship stuff in the next section, if you’re curious.

I also like his design a lot.. the right side of his face is this beautiful mosaic and FOR SOME GOD FORSAKEN REASON HIS EYELINER IS AMAZING??? Also most people think his voice is annoying but there’s a cute charm to it… nobody can tell you sound like a girl if you make it annoying on purpose!!!! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️

Should be obvious. I ship him and Kazuma (Fathershipping), and him and Dr Faker (Deceitshipping/scientistshipping). Technically nothing I like about the two are canon but FUCK YOU their both amazing

The way I think of Fathershipping is all cute and fluffy and “omg kazuma.. but you have a wife!! But.. I still love you..”, sometimes it’s unrequited and sometimes it’s just doomed. Byron’s just a horrible shy, gay mess when it comes to Kazuma. Like ITS SO TELLING how he was willing to literally DIE for him during episode 55, and the fact that in the Sam episode there were only TWO TENTS?? Yeah, they fucked

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon

I wish things with Vetrix were explored more beyond “haha look at the evil freak!!”, I wish he wasn’t demonized for wanting revenge when he literally got deformed and has PTSD from being in Barian World for 5 years straight.

I like Zexal, but (somewhat yugioh as a whole) has an issue with portraying people as either black and white villains or good guys, and people who aren’t pretty bishounen tend to get the shortest end of the stick at times. Like, there’s a REASON why his kids get more screentime than him. It’s because he isn’t conventionally attractive. Vetrix is not a black and white villain, he contains multitudes.

You have to factor in that he was was put in a foreign alien world for half a decade by a person who he thought was a FRIEND, thought his only other friend DIED, was away from his kids (two of whom were taken away and put in an orphanage), got deformed so badly literally no one recognizes him, and more. People who try to act as if characters like KAITO are better than him are so fucking insane because he’s not. I watched his duel with him today and Vetrix had a line about them being the same. They’ve both hurt and killed people as a means to an end. Hes truly not a bad person and people need to realize that 😭😭😭

I wish he got more scenes with them after his arc, I wish we got to see him work to be better especially after all he did, to deal with the ramifications of it all. It feels like his relationship with his kids were just haphazardly tacked on and stapled together, held together by a few peices of duct tape that the writers saw and just sent on its way. It would have been interesting to see if his kiss (ESPECIALLY Quattro) did not forgive him, especially after the shit he said and did.

The same for faker, these kids have no reason to forgive their father after the actual VILE acts they’ve committed towards them.

squidforce -the brand is basic, but if you tell me that's your all time favorite brand? I have to respect that level of authenticity. there are better brands for basic tees and shoes but don't let me stop you. live your truth

zink - BEST SHOES IN THE GAME. not the best sportswear brand but i have massive respect for your taste in shoes

krak-on - you've got good taste. i'd be surprised if you wore krak-on exclusively tho (and dissapointed. i hate brand loyalties)

the Wednesday series is so silly goofy for even IMPLYING that gomez and morticia wouldn't know how to cover up a murder properly, let alone that Wednesday would be unironically scandalised by learning her parents had killed someone. like...do the clowns writing this show actually understand the premise/ethos of The Addams Family? why does this show constantly have them allying with/grovelling at the feet of institutions?? why bother making a show about Wednesday and by extension the Addams family if you're not going to honour their competent oddness and satirical anti-establishment roots? and that's before we even get into the weird ass colourblind racism all throughout this show. I cannot believe there's a scene in this show where morticia addams, a white woman, tells a Black man he has "no idea what it's like not to be believed." I can't believe that the ringleader of the bullies who is bigotedly abusing the "outcasts" is a young Black boy. The antiblackness is insane. like, really? it's so obvious there are next to no poc in significant creative roles on this show which is so fucked considering they not only made Wednesday Latine, but made her ancestory an integral part of the series. I feel like a broken record at this point, but surface level diversity in casting means absolutely nothing so long as the people holding creative control are white. It's just elaborate puppetry, and too many of you fall for it everytime. All this show does is use actors or colour to pay lip-service to the "whitewashing" of history, while it the show itself is written and directed almost exclusively by white people. As far as I can tell there is one director of colour, Gandja Monteiro, who directs 2 mid season eps. Every single other person in creative decision making roles is white. It's an absolute JOKE.

Anyway, let's start with Alesha, Who Smiles at Death. She's our canon trans woman and she chose her name after killing a dragon, naming herself after her grandmother. She also turned a transphobe into a staunch ally in the course of her story. We love to see a girlboss win, and I mean that unironically.

As a card, she is a 3 power, 2 toughness Red First Striker for 3 energy. Whenever she attacks, you can pay 2 White, 2 Black, or a mix of the two colors to return a weaker creature (power 2 or less) from the graveyard to the battlefield tapped and attacking. Her flavor text is a quote of hers, saying "Greet death with sword in hand."

So naturally, I would make her the focus of a spell to ease a trans woman's dysphoria. Since she's a Legendary Creature, I feel safe saying that one would call upon her (treating her as a spirit or archetype) for courage to exist as one's true self and protection from transphobes.

As we've established, I love me some good rocks, but let's play around with plants and other things for this. We really only need one Red energy (so the other two can be generic), so let's go for cactus spines for an offensive protection. For the other two, how about a candle in a gender-affirming color for the dysphoria relief and uhhhh does red pepper for courage make sense? I don't know, I don't use plants. Anyway, a triple-dose of Red energy would be more than enough to fuck up anyone that looks at a trans woman sideways.

Now, let's talk about Fey Steed. This was one of the Elks that made me almost make my Elk deck tri-color (RIP double-Oko, Thief of Crowns; you and your 3/3 Green Elk army will be missed). It's a 4 power, 4 toughness White creature for 4 energy (a double-White with 2 generic). When it attacks, another attacking creature you control becomes Indestructible until end of turn. When a creature or planeswalker you control becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, you have the option to draw a card.

Now, this is a tricky one, because I have trouble with White energy. I've always struggled with it. And I don't want to keep pumping out protection-based stuff, so let's give the Elk a gun.

So someone done fucked with you and your buddies. You may or may not want to harm them, but then you think it would be even funnier to bless everyone around them instead so they're left wondering why their own luck sucks in comparison. So get yourself some kind of deer/elk memorabilia (farm supply stores often have little animal statues, start there), some blessing plants (rosemary? rice? I don't know, I don't do plants, but those are both White-aligned), and you light them fuckers up and wave the animal statue in the smoke. Then you tell your little deer or elk (or delk, or perhaps eer) to go bless everyone around that person but not them, and you put that little toy somewhere safe so it can work in peace. Outside of your house? By a window? Who knows! I don't! I'm a wizard on the internet, I don't live in your house!

So now you've got this little magic animal that's hitting everyone except the jackass with Blessing Bullets. Fuck yeah, Elks.

The Anti-Big Oof, Some May Even Say "The Small Foo"

Just played The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog today, a dumb, goofy little visual novel made for April Fool's Day a few months ago. It's really cute, it took me waaaay longer to get to it than I expected, I originally was going to read it the day it released, but uhhh i forgor💀 but now that I have actually finally read it, it's so good and was definitely worth reading. It's not very long, and there's not a ton to it, but it was created by a team of really dedicated Sonic fans including a few of the writers for the IDW comics and it is so incredibly obvious, it is absolutely filled with obscure little references to the series as a whole that only weird obsessive freaks like me would ever even notice. The number of times I went "WAOW✨" was immeasurable, the Knuckles OVA hat, "Big Oof" (classic), I think they even indirectly referenced the fucking Shadow pissing on Eggman's wife video, not 100% sure on that tho, may just be reading into it too much, but in my headcanon they're 100% referencing Shadow pissing on Eggman's wife frfr. It's crazy how the writing teams for every Sonic related thing now, the games, the comics, even the social media is just made up of a bunch people that are just as obsessed with Sonic as even the most insane fans, like the last 10 years of Sonic media has pretty much just been a collection of officially licensed fan passion projects and I'm all for it. Like obviously there's been the typical corporate made stuff that was obviously just rushed out for money and had no love behind it too, just like any franchise, but like, I'm not here to talk about that, I don't want to talk about that, I'm here to talk about PURE, RAW, UNFILTERED PASSION AND HOW FUCKING COOL IT IS!!!

The Sonic community in general is just insane in how passionate they are, like what other community has multiple entire expos dedicated to fangames, that have been recognized by major members of the official Sonic development team? (If you can't tell I am very excited for SAGE and SHC, the next 2 months are gonna be so pog >:)).

It's so exceptionally fun experiencing any kind of work in general that's so clearly made with a ton of passion put into it. Like art that you can just sense the passion oozing out of has got to be like, peak art, always, no matter the actual thing itself, if it's been made with a ton of love, it's peak, no question. It's why there's a lot of specific artists and communities that I just resonate with so hard, like when an artist or community just loves what they make, that's just like, so cool this is my excuse to mention Trigger/Gainax I love Trinax I love it when they have to make the final episode of an anime black and white and at 2fps not only for stylistic reasons but because they just HAD to put their entire budget into the 2 minute big robot scene like how could they resist and I mean this entirely unironically I fucking LOVE that they know exactly where their talents and passions lie and are willing to put everything into what they want to make at the expense of other parts that they don't want to make. Remember when in Promare Galo starts ranting about like ancient firefighters or some shit in the middle of a fight and it was basically just a stand-in for the writers wanting to rant about ancient firefighters or some shit? yea, that was cool.
