First time drawing a background!
It was a matter of trying, failing and redoing it all over again. I have a feeling that I can do better, so I'm gonna start studying backgrounds for the time being.
But overall, I liked the result.
— If you're curious, I used some brushes from @tamberella free pack. Go check their art, it's mesmerizing.
You can download it here

How do you draw the background? is so good!! Do you have a tutorial you can share with us?
Thank you! Backgrounds were truly a struggle when I began drawing so I'm glad they look decent now kljdsafj
Practice is key as usual, but I'll share some of the things I do.
If I'm drawing something I'm not familiar with or I want a particular mood for the painting, I look for references. They help a lot!
Tumblr media
If I'm drawing something like buildings, windows, furniture, and so on; I use one-point or two-point perspective. It really adds a feeling of depth and three-dimensionality. Once you know how the lines work, it is quite easy to build objects in perspective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The horizon line controls the perspective and its position affects how the scene is seen (from above or below). I've heard people saying you shouldn't put the horizon line right at the middle and that it's better to use the rule of thirds instead. But I mostly do whatever kljdlaks. You can put it where the focal point of the painting is.
If I'm drawing a natural landscape as a background, I just remember the general rules of "things that are farther away look smaller and less detailed", "things that are closer have more contrast", "things look bluish with distance if it's daytime".
Tumblr media
And there are the concepts of foreground, middle ground and background. Adding those elements can also add depth to the drawing. I rarely use them tho
Tumblr media
it's also important to define a light source that stays consistent and look for colors that look well together.
And of course, special brushes aren't needed to make art but there are some that I find particular useful for backgrounds: Devin Elle Kurtz's free brush packs. I love them.

I just stumbled across your blog and your art is AMAZING! I was wondering, what software/brushes do you use? I just love the texture of your work
hi hi! thank you for the ask :) to answer your question: I use clip studio paint pro for my art!
I mainly use the same two brushes for my stuff, that being the dry ink brush to linework and flat brush for painting and rendering.
Tumblr media
I also like to add texture to my flat brush by going through the brush settings and messing with the texture option there. I use Canvas 01-02 most of the time, but I'm starting to play with Impasto
Tumblr media
For further texturing- I use Devin Elle Kurtz's brush packs :D Especially the rake pack! You can create some really good textures with it, and I heavily recommend downloading it (it's free too!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also recommend downloading the foliage + grass packs! I'm still figuring out how to use them well, but I got some use out of them in my Loop piece :)

hope this helps haha :D

What brushes do you use? (Also you're an amazing artist and your skill makes me cry 🙏)
Tumblr media
Aww thanks so much 😭
I use a combination of brushes that I made + got from other artists
The main brush I use (procreate and Photoshop) is this mechanical pencil brush that one of my college professors gave me?? I use it to do most of the detail rendering and the actual drawing on my art. When I do inking on comic interiors, I use the ink brushes in this screenshot that I made myself.
I also use Kyles paintbox (free for Adobe users) set of brushes, and brushes from Devin Elle Kurtz (suggested donation) and Aaron Blaise (paid, but does frequent sales)
Recently, I've also been using some Halftone Hospital brushes (free and open resources! HIGHLY recommend!)
I always double check that every brush I use is either open resource or that the purchase comes with commercial rights, that way I can use them all in commissions and freelance work without worry :) sometimes certain brush makers require you to pay an additional "royalty" fee if you want to use them in commercial work, but none of these ones require that, so no worries.

What app/brushes do you use to draw and how big are your canvases?
I use Photoshop and usually draw with basic hard and soft round brushes, but lately I've been using texture brushes that I've made myself. I also have some of Devin Elle Kurtz brushes that are available for free on Gumroad.
The canvas size is usually A3 size (3508 x 4961 pixels). Though as I work, I change the format by cropping or adding space, so 2500px is the minimum, and 10000px is the maximum.
Resolution is 300 dpi.

brushes
I've been asked the question again and I don't think I've given a detailed answer yet:
important note: these brushes work for clip studio and photoshop, I don't think they are compatible with procreate.
It's hard for me to talk about brushes because
I rename and reorganise them in the software so I never really remember where they come from.
I download a lot of them but I only use a few.
I have a very bad memory for names.
I use my programme in French, which means that for the basic brushes I can't even give you the reference so that you know exactly which brush I'm talking about.
That said, I'll try to give you some hints that might help.
here's how they look.
Tumblr media
1 - This brush is supposed to reproduce a pencil effect, but I like it for the worn ink look of old comics. I used it in The Shepherd of Damned Souls and the Hellraiser crossover, both for the lineart and the colours. I like it a lot because it looks good even when drawn quickly without any effort to clean up, which saves me a lot of time. source: I'm not sure, either I downloaded it, it might have been in one of the free packs from an artist called: Corey Brickley Or it's basic under a name like realistic pencil.
2 - Another brush that's supposed to imitate pencil rendering. This is the one I use most by default. It's very thin, which is ideal for very small details, and it suits me just as well for a neat lineart as for a quick, messy sketch. I've used it in most of my drawings but the most recent example is the flute player for lineart only, I don't use it for colour. source: This is a basic clip brush, but as I use it in French and have renamed it I couldn't tell you its English name.
3 - I also use it a lot, for quick drawings that aren't clean and for clean drawings, I use it for shading or for small shiny things. I used it for shading the flute player. source: this is a basic brush, which should have been called something like: circular watercolour.
in association with n°3 i use another basic brush, found in the watercolour section, which is used for blending, it must be called something like fiber blender. it has a texture reminiscent of very diluted watercolour, where you can see the capillary absorption by the paper.
4 - another basic brush, called something like opaque watercolour. I use it for my illustration paintings without lineart. I use it in its basic mode but also with an encrusted texture (if it's not basic with the software then I've downloaded it from the clip resource library and it's called "$$$/presets/pattern/artistsurfaces_pat/watercolor").
ex link 1, ex link 2
5, 6 and 7. These are special brushes that I often use, but not always. Especially in Klimt and Beksiński remake or the Exctase remake. I know for sure that I downloaded them, but from where? I don't remember. I suppose they come from the free packs I've downloaded over the last 3/4 years from artists like :
Corey Brickley, RAV89, dauxasm, darek rabrocki, Devin Elle Kurtz, spartan.
That's all I can say, it may not be very helpful but I get asked that a lot so I had to try.
Having said that, I use so few of brushes and for such a short time that I think I'm the last person to have any good advice to give on the subject.

AAAAAAA!!! I love your art sm <333 I was wondering what brushes you use (I love seeing the small details)
Hey there! Thank you so much for sending in an ask, it means a lot <3 I'm glad you enjoy my art :)
Included below the break are links to my brushes, and some other brushpacks that I've found especially useful.
A few people have asked me for my brushes, so here's a link to a google drive folder with the 12 main brushes I use for painting + sketching. The brushes are calibrated for Procreate — there are a few tutorials online about how to convert them to other programs, but since I don't have any programs to test how they work, I didn't wanna upload any wonky files for you all.
I've collected these brushes over the course of a few years, all from free downloads. However, if you own one of these brushes and it was distributed without pay, please let me know and I'll adjust my files 👍
Below is a sample of each of the brushes along with a brief desc of what I use them for — it might help y'all match things up if you're converting files to different programs:
Tumblr media
Here is the link to that folder.
Additionally, a brushpack that is just FULL of wonderful textures + basics for all artstyles is @/twulfs' free collection of Procreate brushes (link here). It's a MASSIVE collection, and probably has more brushes than you'll ever need — but sometimes we all just need a new wonky brush to break artblock or find inspiration, or paint that specific texture. A few of the brushes I use are also in that pack.
Also, pretty widely known brush creator, but Devin Elle Kurtz has a lot of gorgeous packs :D I only use one of hers (the Very Basic Rake), which is from a whole collection of beautiful rake textures — that is here. Highly recommend checking out her other files too :)
Hope that helps. Do let me know if the Google Drive link is breaking lolol.

the pumpkin field
Or whatever, i keep changing my blog's name-
Long overdue pinned post to finally organize my shit hehe
Hi! Name's Reshie. I often go by Pitruli like it's a surname, and i get new nicknames every time i change fandom (Ruli and Triffouilly are fine). I'm 23, French and go by They/he for now. I study English, always wish I could draw more, and I'd like to work as a translator.
Main activity here is posting my art, mostly fanarts. I don't make sideblogs so when i change interest in fandom it can be a bit sudden. I don't reblog much, most often it's art of friends, sometime it's random silly things. I tried to hold from not doing to many rambling post (and they're not tagged)
This is where i've been posting the most. However i've been starting to do a bit more of Tiktok, but usually it's just different way to just display drawings i've posted here anyways.
Commisions have not been open in a long while, I will have to revise my entire system before I open them again.
My Art
All art posts go under #reshie.art
Current main fandoms; #One Piece, Attack on Titan,
Past fandoms i made art off; #hermitcraft, #warrior cats
Other stuff that kinda work in series; ACT7 (homestuck/hermitcraft AU), That old minecraft worldbuilding thingy, Star Piece (One Piece/warrior Cats crossover)
Inktobers (whenever i actually do it), Artfights (uncommon as well),
SetUp
I draw on Clip Studio Paint and my go to brushes are the default "mechanical pencil" for sketch/lines, and i colours with a few free packs from Devin Elle Kurtz and Ahmed Aldoori on Gumroad (labeled as for photoshop, work just fine)
I use whatever I have on hand when I draw traditionally, but it's always rather cheap suplies, most often ball pens, liners, alchool markers or some watercolours

Hello i was wondering if maybe you could share the brushes you use🥺
Apologies for the late response, I had to hunt down all the sources for my brushes again on 2 different programs... Some of these cost some clippy points on CSP but rn there's a login bonus for them until March 13!
CLIP STUDIO:
Sketching:
ReaganS2 pen. Costs 100cp now, but it's been really helpful in how responsive and layered it is for setting up the rough sketch.
AJ's pencil set. Very useful for warmups and figure studies IMO.
Lining:
Quibbly. It costs 50 cp but it's got the perfect texture and crunch that I love in lining, super responsive as well.
Coloring:
YN Painting Brush Set. I added some color jitter to the settings to make it more vibrant.
MYNQZO brushes. Great texture, I personally use the rougher brush the most.
ETC:
Close and fill tool without gaps. This one's just a lifesaver, very good to immediately get a base layer done. There's also other versions OP for the tool made that you should check out.
Erase to remove only protrude pen and overflow. Set your lineart to reference and it'll only paint/erase along the edges. Incredibly useful (There's also the erase along edge eraser, but I prefer the former.)
PROCREATE:
Lining:
Gesinski Ink from the default ink brushes has been my go to for years, with a touch of scattering to add texture. Lately I've been experimenting with the Ink Bleed brush as well.
Coloring:
This brush pack from roseflarea on twitter has been really good, especially love the pastel brush.
If you're willing to spend some money (like 8.50 USD or so) this ghibli inspired brushset is very good for Nature/Landscape pieces. It also includes video timelapses and tutorials. (Also compatible w PS/CSP)
Cityscape brushset by Devin Elle Kurtz on the other hand is super helpful with more urban backgrounds, it's free and compatible w CSP/PS
Devin Elle Kurtz also has a very nice foliage pack that's free as well and compatible with Procreate/PS/CSP, check it out!

PSA - This Etsy store is stealing artists’ free brushes for profit
There is a shop on Etsy called SammyArtsStudio who is taking people’s free brushes and resources, selling them for roughly AU$13.01 a pop. She has stolen the free work of amazing artists such as Devin Elle Kurtz and Attki, both of whom generously provide free brushes that are being misused for monetary gain.
According to her page, she has made 4,722 sales with 800+ reviews, most of which are five-star. Assuming all of those listings are AU$13.01, that's AU$61,386 or US$41,282 of profit. She is a five-star "star seller", meaning that her work is prioritised in the search engine.
This isn’t intended to be a call out post; it’s more of a heads up to people who create free brushsets. Only the creator of the brushes can submit an Intellectual property infringement form to stop this person from commercially benefiting from your work. Sadly, Etsy is very lax about art theft, so this is the only way to stop it. It’s apparent by the glowing reviews that thousands of well-meaning people are falling victim to this misappropriation. Please refer to Etsy’s IP Policy here. Below is proof of content being stolen, including screenshots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Support the original artist and get their brushes here. Find the Youtube video shown above here.
Tumblr media
The seller even posted a video of them “showing how to use the brushes”, which features even more proof of stolen brush usage. Get the original brushes here!
tl;dr if you make Procreate brushes, I recommend checking this Etsy to make sure that your IP isn’t being infringed upon and commercialised without your consent. She has 149 listings on Etsy. I am very appreciative of people who provide free brushes, and I’d hate to see your work being fraudulently misused.

Okay Snow, you did the 9 mercenaries as birds, what’s next?
I’m making this as a sort of mini set of questions and answers about the whole shebang. No one asked but I’m telling anyways.
Anyways for next steps, I may make Saxton, Admin, and Pauling, maybe not, I already know what saxton would be if I did (emu, obvious), but I’m not sure about our two token ladies… I have some ideas for certain. This whole thing took a lot out of me being as fast as I tried to be, I’m a slow artist with limited time in my day for art sadly, so they’d be back burner for sure. At least until art fight references are done being made.
In the mean time I’d totally be down for people to ask me things about the au or request little scenes or doodles, or just discuss my choices! If you have birds you think would work as well I’d love to discuss it with you :) I don’t bite… usually. I promise!
What brushes did you use?
I stay pretty limited. I used procreate’s basic ink bleed brush (with a little stabilisation sometimes for my poor hands) for sketching and lining. I used procreate’s basic rectangle brush for almost all my coloring and rendering. Starting at spy’s piece (I think) I used the cloud painting rake from devin Elle Kurtz’s free cloud painting brush pack to add in details to the wings. It was easier than what I did in solly’s piece, which is all manually painted with the rectangular brush turned way down in size and took eons.
Also starting in spy’s painting I used the HSV sliders and my rectangle brush to paint in the deeper light and shadows once the flat render was done! It’s made my rendering a lot easier and more beautiful and consistent in my opinion. Over all my art skills have increased vastly.
For the more complicated poses and perspectives I made pose models in the free app justsketchme and used those.
Did you listen to anything while drawing?
Bear ghost, a lesser known rock band from Arizona, single handedly got me though this whole project, I had them on blast for almost every piece for at least part of its drawing. Please check them out on Spotify incredibly good and underrated. Dotab, big town banky Blaine’s rockabilly bbq, and necromancin dancin single-handedly kept me going in particular. I also adore sirens, peas and love, and funkle Phil.
Why were you so pressed to make these so fast?
I had for a week long trip I couldn’t bring my tablet along on starting the 13th, so it was either draw fast enough, or wreck my momentum and have a week before the last one. Boy howdy have I sleep deprived myself for this art. Worth it tho. I didn’t make it, I did kill my momentum, but I pushed through!
Can I redraw these / make fanart /anything based on this?
YES PLEASE I MAY BE AROACE BUT ID KISS YOU IF YOU DID ANYTHING WITH THIS. There is very little set plot to this all, so go bonkers. please just if you make nsfw, *dont* send it to me. If you make anything that isn’t, please *do* send it to me! My notifications are a little broken, so dm me a link directly if you want me to see it :3.
Why? Just why all… this?
Brain rot mostly. I like birds, I like avian au’s, I like team fortress, why not chuck it in a bowl and stir? And if I made one mercenary, I kinda gotta do all the others, no? Ain’t right otherwise…
