when thinking about scar and mei's dynamic, I love thinking about why he becomes so attached to her. it's not just a parental instinct, it's specifically identifying with her struggles. the chang clan is small and has little political power compared to the more dominant clans in xing, and it's a struggle just to survive. even though it's not exactly the same, there's this feeling of solidarity between scar and mei because they're both disenfranchised within their respective countries. the sympathy mei describes when she found xiao-mei is what scar feels towards mei, seeing something of themselves in the other and taking pity on them

and there's this other element to him helping her find xiao-mei, and I might be misremembering, but I'm fairly certain it's the first deviation from his revenge based quest. so far, every time we've seen him, he's either been attacking state alchemists, going somewhere to find a state alchemist, or recovering from his injuries. he is very driven when it comes to his goals, but he sees this little girl crying because she is all alone in a foreign country on a desperate quest to save her people and she's just lost the only family she has with her, and he decides to help her. he didn't have to do that, he could have just ignored her or insisted on moving on, but he is not heartless or cruel, he is a compassionate person underneath all the pain, so he goes out of his way to help this little girl find her panda

no wonder mei is constantly reiterating to other people that scar is a good person

Growing up, he and Al and Winry had frequently slept together in a tangle of arms and legs, it hadn’t occurred to him that Draco would be uncomfortable with it. It hadn't been his first choice but he hadn't been expecting it to be a problem... Fuck, and now he was stuck unable to maneuver himself on his own-

“Night, Ed,” the words were hesitant, but not as uncomfortable as Ed would have expected.

“Yeah- night, Draco,” It took a little, but Ed could feel Draco’s breaths even out slowly as the other boy sunk back into the realm of unconsciousness. Ed let out a breath of relief, glad that he hadn’t ruined… something. It had been a long time since he’d had the warmth of another person at his back and he had to fight the urge to roll into the comforting heat. Instead, Ed pushed away, rolling until he was balanced on the end of the mattress, a knife’s edge away from falling to the ground, where he would be the least likely to disturb Draco.

Ok dramatic clickbait descriptions aside, I’ve wanted to draw something in this style for a while now, and these three seemed like an excellent subject! This was really fun to do and I learned a lot. Hello! Excellent question! I have a couple all time favorites, which you may have already read since they’re some iconic pieces of Royai history imo ;)

delicate by @lantur (ao3): A wonderful, long, in depth riza character study, with some lovely royai on the side. My unofficial canon, because of how perfect the characterization and writing is.

We That Are Young by Stoplight Delight (fanfiction.net): a super old fanfic I read when I first joined the fandom that I still love :) it’s a sort of canon divergent sort of canon compliant account of Roy and Riza’s lives, spanning from when they were children to the start of the anime.

Buried Alive by @rizahawkaye (ao3): another one I read when first joining the fandom. Riza fakes her own death to infiltrate a terrorist organization. The storytelling is incredible and there’s lots of great twists and turns (as well as some delicious royai drama ofc)

And lastly Cessation- also by @rizahawkaye (fanfiction.net): a haunting little oneshot that has always stuck with me, about riza and roy reuniting one last time before roy is executed for his crimes in ishval.
