elvis knew he messed up the moment he rented out a ranch too far from graceland, especially when he was the one doing the driving and you would be in the passenger seat. you didn't do well with long car rides, he learned that the hard way. but his stubborn self rented it out not knowing how far it was. he got it just for the two of you, and now he didn't even know if you'd make it there.
the reality of it all didn't hit him until thirty minutes in to the drive. he glanced over at you waking up from your nap, your arms stretching over your head as you glanced out the window. "still not there?" you asked with a pout on your face.
"no, baby. we still got a bit of time to go." he sighed. "you want a snack? how 'bout some juice?"
"no, i'm okay." you shook your head, facing forward and watching the clouds from the windshield.
some time when by when you began to get antsy, tired of sitting in the same seat for so long. you knew you sometimes got motion sickness, but always tried to take something beforehand to stop it. you turned your head to look at elvis, already feeling a little woozy. "did you bring my pills?"
he bit his lip nervously before giving you a quick glance then back at the road, "no, baby. i'm sorry. i completely forgot."
"oh. okay." you replied nervously. "that's okay."
of course, it wasn't okay. the more he drove, the more you felt yourself begin to get nervous. your body felt weird, there was the queasiness in your stomach, yet your heart felt like it was going at a million beats per hour. you wanted the feeling to pass so badly. your legs bounced up and down nervously, picking at your nails and trying to not think about the odd sensation in your stomach.
elvis noticed, glancing at you. "what's going on? you alright? need me to pull over?"
you wanted to say yes, yes, yes. but you didn't want to go off schedule if elvis had one. "baby, talk to me." he said, interrupting your thoughts and setting a hand on your knee.
"i don't feel good, daddy. i-i don't wanna get sick. i don't...." your eyes started welling up with tears. "don't wanna puke, daddy. i don't wanna."
his heart dropped, unsure of what to do. he knew how you got whenever you felt sick. anytime he, or anyone he knew was about to get sick—they'd be out of the house or he'd make sure you were in the other room. even then, he knew you couldn't stop thinking about the fact someone near you was still getting sick despite being away from it all.
it was worse when it was you. you can't escape from yourself.
"alright, alright. take a deep breath, honey." he said softly, his hand moving to rub at your back. "we'll figure this out. i'm gonna pull over at this lil' gas station and let you take a breather."
you were in tears, hiccuping and fighting off that awful urge to puke—your hands shaking and body trembling as you tried to let that feeling pass. you shook your hands at your sides to try and soothe yourself as elvis pulled into the parking lot, quickly getting out and heading over to your side. he knealt down as he opened the passenger door, taking your hands. "baby, hey. look at me." he looked right into your eyes, "i know you don't wanna get sick. if you need to, then just do it. it's scary, i know. but sometimes your body can't control it."
you let out a soft cry, squeezing at his hands. "i don't wanna."
"i know, baby. god, i know." his tone was sympathetic, doing his best to soothe you in the best way he can. "you wanna sit for a minute and let it pass? i'll go inside and see if they got somethin' for your poor lil' tummy."
you really didn't want him to go, but you took it like a champ and nodded, sniffling and sitting in the car with your stomach churning and head pounding. elvis returned as quickly as he could, hopping back into the driver seat and taking out a couple pills for you. "here," he opened your hand and dumped them into your palm. "these outta make you feel a little better, we can sit here till you feel comfortable again. that sounds alright?" he asked, handing you a tiny juice pouch.
his heart truly ached for you, he hated seeing you like this and always wished he could take that fear away from you, but he understood it was just something you couldn't control or get over.
he smiled as you took the two pills, finishing off your juice and nodding. "thank you, daddy. 'm sorry." you said shakily, wiping at your eyes.
"honey, don't even be sorry." he frowned. "i'm the dummy who forgot your pills. i bought a few extra just in case those wear off. you gonna be okay, lil'?"
"can we wait a little longer before you start drivin' again?" you nervously asked.
he gave you a soft smile, petting at your hair. "of course, sweetheart. of course."

Curious question especially after seeing the sweet and lovely art of Ruby and Neo
Do you have an idea of a story of these two get along and potentially start having a relationship ?
I actually ended up shipping it because a friend and I ended up developing them through interactions in roleplaying, post V9 lmao
I'm half-drunk so I don't have in me to write down just ALL of it, but the basics go that after coming back to Remnant, Ruby was the first person that Neo approached (from the ones she knew) because she came back with the intention of saving Cinder from Salem.
She's the first one she goes to find because despite all the horrible things she did to her, that small look from Ruby (and slight worry) before they left for Remnant got engraved in her mind, so she wanted to warn Ruby that next time she appeared around, it wouldn't be as an enemy if they didn't get in her way.
However, she's back, she's still lonely because obviously, it's not like she had people to go back to while there before trying to get Cinder, and they exchange Scroll contacts, so Neo starts to bug Ruby to meet up again while they wait for the next step.
At first Neo hates just how kind Ruby is, or how much she tries to actually be her friend, because Neo can't just put herself in her shoes- if she was in Ruby's shoes she would be vengeful and angry, but Ruby's just, there, actually trying to give her a chance.
And she hates it, but at the same time, Neo doesn't do well with loneliness, so the more time she spends with her, the more she starts to get attached and co-dependent of Ruby's presence, and the more she slowly starts to fall for her because she just treats her too well despite everything.
And Neo hates it!!!
It's conflicting, and Neo tries to be a bad influence on Ruby in the process while not exactly changing herself. She still does crime, she pays with fake money in front of Ruby's face, she sneaks into the cinema with her with fake tickets- she's actually the one to convince Ruby to get piercings if she likes them, because they're only gonna live once, in hopes that Yang or one of her teammates would get angry for whatever reason, but even with her not-so-moral methods of going at life, Ruby's still there.
Neo starts being selfish, and possessive, but she's being treated well and as an equal. She still doesn't understand how Ruby could even forgive her, but they're there and they're now together despite all odds.

hii! after reading ur moon and son halloween special, it got me thinking ab kurapika and yn. if its not too much to ask, could you do a small special where kurapika figures out why yn hates their clan? it could be a drabble, short chapter, hcs, whatever youd like to write, i was js super curious for what kurapikas reaction would be
love ur writing 🩷🩵
I'm gonna start this off with a minor spoiler warning for the end chapters of Moon and Sun. Nothing too big so don't worry.
Okay, we Good? There's only four people who really know about what happened with Y/n and their clan. Gon, Killua, Kite, and Ging. The first three are for obvious reasons. Now the only reason Ging knows is because he's got a part to play in future chapters, which I will not be disclosing at this time. That being said, what Kurapika knows/ learns about is a very watered down version of events. Below is a oneshot of how he finds out and reacts.
The Difference Between You and I
⛓️⛓️⛓️⛓️⛓️⛓️⛓️
It was ironic, really, when you looked back on what happened a few days ago. You didn't think you had it in you anymore to dislike someone so much. Especially since he was one of the boys' closest friends.
You wanted your first meeting to be friendly, even if a part of you was still bitter he hadn't bothered to see Gon at the hospital. You'd hoped to get along with him as well as you did with Leorio.
 But opposites attract you suppose.
The two of them couldn't have been any more different from each other. Leorio was a stubborn loudmouth depending on who he interacted with. Acting purely on impulse most of the time. Yet despite that, he had a heart of gold from what you could tell.
Treating Gon and Killua with as much care as you did. Wanting to be a doctor in order to help those who couldn't afford proper medical care. Hell, he was even currently helping you with your ‘condition.’
Kurapika, on the other hand, was quiet and reserved. At least from what the boys had told you. Though you noticed he also seemed distant. Rarely ever picking up his phone and even rarer were the times he'd actually show up in person.
But you wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt.
If the boys loved him, how bad could he really be?
And if Leorio was dating him, then surely he had some redeeming qualities.
Well turns out fate had a funny way of playing things out. Irony at its best.
—----------------------
You'd arrived in York New about the same time as the boys. Having come for your ‘usual’ checkup. Something you blamed on that damn cat along with yourself.
You'd agreed beforehand to meet up right after for lunch. The three of you communicating through a small group chat. Although you were still struggling with the newer technology. Not yet used to actually having a phone. But you digress.
It was during Leorio's final evaluation that you were made aware of the blonde’s presence.
“You getting anything?” He asked.
You shook your head, unable to focus your eyes. Six months and your nen was still shot. What a pain.
“Don't push yourself. Remember, we still have a few treatments to test out. You're not out of luck just yet.”
“I know. I just kinda want the process to be over already, you know? Get things back to normal.” Well, as normal as you could be.
Leorio was about to respond before a ‘ding’ from his phone went off. He gave an apologetic look as he checked what it was.
Although he knew you didn't mind, he still wanted to be professional. This was his job and he took pride in it. Despite his nonchalant demeanor.
“Woah! Kurapika's in town!”
“Kurapika?” The one who usually ignores all his calls? The one who put revenge before his dying friend? But you thought better than to say that out loud. Instead you settled on-
“He's…blonde, right?”
Leorio looked up at you with a bewildered expression. Out of all the things you could say, it was that. It was almost enough to make him laugh.
“Yes? You know, you've got an odd way of remembering people.”
“But I'm not wrong, am I? You gonna see him after this?” You asked with a teasing smirk.
“Yeah. It's been a while. I think the boys would be happy to see him too.” He gestured to the three kids that sat waiting outside of your room.
Two of which were now excitedly staring at their phones. The third sleeping contently on her brother's shoulder.
“You should meet him too.” Leorio suggested.
And although you appreciated the offer, it didn't feel right for you to tag along. You didn't want things to potentially be awkward. Plus, you weren't the best with new people.
“I don't wanna intrude. I'd rather the four of you catch up. Like old times. Well maybe not the four of you if Alluka has anything to say about it.” Already knowing the small girl went everywhere Killua did.
“You'd really do that. I know it's been months since you spent time with the boys.”
“Yeah but it's been a year since they even heard from Kurapika. Besides, I'll meet him when I pick the boys up. I'm here for three more days after all. And then~you and Kurapika could spend some time by yourselves.”
His face flushed a bright red at the insinuation. Playfully shoving your head to the side.
“About time you paid me back for all the times I watched the boys for you.”
—-----------------------
The two of you finished up, with Leorio briefly leaving to request his break. The kids wasted no time rushing you once you exited the room.
“Any luck this time?” Gon asked.
“Sadly, no. But there's always next time, right?” You tried to reassure. But he didn't look all that convinced.
“If it doesn't work out, you know you can always ask Nanika to-” Killua started to offer, but you stopped him before he could finish.
“It's fine if I can't get it back. I'll just have to get used to being a normie. Unless, you've got a problem with normies?” Your tone was teasing as you ruffled the small assassin's hair.
Your attention was redirected towards a pull on your sleeve.
“I don't mind helping Big Sib,” Alluka assured.
“I mind. I'll be okay so don't worry about it…In other news, I heard one of your friends just got here.” You quickly changed the subject. Not wanting to bring down the mood. You wanted today to be a good day.
And judging by the way both boys beamed up at you, it would be.
“Yeah! Kurapika's gonna be here for a few days! I hope you don't mind if he comes with us today.” Gon explained.
You could never really say no to that kid, even if you had already planned to give the duo space today. You returned his cheerful grin with one of your own.
“Course not. To be honest, I was gonna let the four of you reconnect in peace.”
“Peace? You make it sound like we're embarrassed of you,” Killua mumbled.
“What was that?”
“I said, ‘Four of us? What about my sister?’” he quickly covered. Though he could tell you heard what he said first. But you'd let him off the hook this time.
For now.
“Why don't I take her shopping while you guys catch up?”
“Shopping? You can afford that now?” His tone was playful, but there was a genuine hint of concern somewhere in there.
“Hey!” You scolded, about to come up with a retort before Gon stepped in.
“Yeah! They're working with Kite and his team. It's why they travel so much now.”
At the mention of the former silver haired hunter, Killua's expression soured.
“Sibling stealer.”
At that, you pinched his cheek.
“Har har. You mad at him because we're dating now or because Alluka occasionally calls him dad?”
He covered his ears, face slightly red from embarrassment as he tugged Gon away. Not bothering to wait for Leorio.
“We’re leaving now! Have her back by six!”
—-------------
Safe to say, they were overjoyed to see Kurapika again. Both boys eagerly questioning him about his new Zodiac status, while Leorio reminded them not to overwhelm him with questions.
Kurapika was glad to back, if only for a brief moment. He truly did miss them, but his mission always came first. He'd already made tremendous progress recovering his clan’s eyes. His new Zodiac status aiding in his endeavors.
But through pursuing his goal, he'd evidently missed out on a lot with his friends and partner.
The boys were 13 going on 14 now. Gon had achieved his own goal and met Ging. Traveling with him up until a month ago.
Killua had managed to finally get away from his family, bringing his little sister with him. The two of them also traveling around. Which begs the question, where was she currently?
Leorio had become a doctor, having just been promoted to a zodiac after the election. Which Kurapika did watch, very much proud of how far he got.
Yes, so much had changed.
He supposed it was bittersweet in a way. The three of them already shooting for a new goal while he was still trying to complete his.
But he truly was grateful for the time he spent with them today. That he was still considered important to them despite his distance. He made a mental note to try harder once he left.
It wasn't before very long that Leorio had to return to work. His break over too soon for the blonde's liking.
So with a smooch on his cheek and a ‘ewww!’ from the boys, Leorio was off. Leaving Kurapika with the duo.
Now while you were aware of Kurapika, he had no idea of your existence until the boys mentioned you in passing.
—-----------------------
A desert of some kind sat in front of them.
“Y/n would for sure love this. Do you think we should take them some?” Killua asked, the question directed towards Gon.
“They’ll be upset if we don't. And you know what that means.” Gon responded.
“They won't carry us for a week. You think we're getting too old for that?” But before their conversation could continue, Kurapika spoke up. Curious about the new name they mentioned.
“Y/n?”
Both boys looked up at him surprised before remembering the two of you had never met.
“Y/n’s the person that’s been taking care of us since Greed Island. They're our big sibling,” Gon proudly announced while Killua nodded along.
You seemed to be very close to them.
“Right now they're with Alluka. They wanted to give the four of us a chance to catch up.” Killua added.
That explained why his sister wasn't here. And if Killua trusted you with her, then you must've been reliable too.
A good person.
“Tell me more about them.”
—-----------------------
Truthfully, all odds pointed at the two of you getting along. You were cut from the same cloth, so to speak. Both coming from strong clans. Both losing them during your childhood.
Your lazy demeanor would have paired nicely with his quiet one. You always were more comfortable around less energetic people.
His analytical skills were on par with yours. A strong head on both of your shoulders.
Even if you were still upset with Kurapika, the two boys knew you'd get along with him in time. Sure you'd probably chew him out for not answering his phone, but you'd warm up to him nevertheless.
So what was it exactly that put you at odds with each other?
The catalyst that sparked endless animosity between you?
Well, it just so happened to be the subject of your clan that started it.
It was an accident, truly. Gon didn't mean for it to slip out. He just got so excited telling Kurapika about you that he forgot some details weren't meant to be shared.
“You know, I'm kinda glad Nanika erased their memories. Y/n is a lot happier now that they're clan isn't looking for them anymore. They weren't good people to begin with so don't feel too bad about it.”
Gon had been explaining before slapping a hand over his mouth. Him and Killua looking at each other with wide eyes. Gazes briefly glancing over towards Kurapika for his reaction.
They knew he could be touchy with the subject. Watching him carefully to see if his eyes changed. Instead, they were met with a suspicious stare. Not exactly positive, but not really negative either.
“What do mean their clan isn't looking for them anymore? Did something happen between them?”
Because Kurapika, for the life of him, couldn't fathom a family giving up on one of their own. But the subject wasn't as black and white as he suspected.
“We're not really supposed to say. It's not like they told us not to tell anyone, but it's their privacy. You know?” Gon informed.
Not only was it your business, but it was also something you trusted the two of them with. And he was the last person who should be spilling your secrets.
The two boys once again eyed each other. You wouldn't be mad if they told Kurapika. So long as he didn't bring it up directly to you.
Besides, the chain user would just ask you in person if he didn't get an answer. He was direct by nature. Something you would respect, but not if it concerned your ‘family.’
So what was the worse outcome?
They say nothing and Kurapika asks you directly about it. Or he finds out another way.
The second option: they partially explain the situation. Not getting into too much detail, but enough to satisfy their friend’s curiosity.
“If it's not something you want to discuss, then I won't-” but Killua stopped him from finishing his sentence.
“If we tell you, you have to promise you won't say we told you anything. Got it?”
It wasn't that they were wary of their friend, god no. They just didn't want the two of you butting heads in the future.
Kurapika gave a small nod.
“Y/n doesn't get along well with their clan. They haven't since they were a little kid. They just don't feel comfortable or safe around them anymore.” Gon started.
“Why?”
“They sorta had a disagreement with them. And that's putting it very lightly. An argument about how things were being done. And how their practices were wrong. That's all we can really say.” Killua continued.
The rest would have to come directly from you. If you ever got around to trusting Kurapika. Something that sadly wouldn't come to fruition.
“So they're estranged from their clan because of a disagreement?” And for whatever reason, that made Kurapika upset.
Your clan was alive and healthy. They'd been looking for you. And here you were being petty. Avoiding them because of it.
When all his people were slaughtered like nothing. Never even having the chance to say goodbye.
He wanted to think there was more to it. That there was something big the boys weren't telling him. And there was, but he'd never get to learn about what it was.
How similar your grief was to his with him losing Pairo and you losing Kari.
The rest of the afternoon felt tense. Kurapika tried not to show his discomfort, but both boys could tell anyways. Seems the two of you wouldn't get along after all.
It was only a matter of time before you went to get them. Alluka trailing happily behind you with an ice cream cone as you struggled with her bags. Most of which were toys.
Both boys quickly grabbed a few from you to lighten the load. Your eyes drifting over to the blonde behind them.
So that was Kurapika.
“Alluka! You can't just make them carry everything. Next time help.” Killua scolded.
Said girl, looked up at her big brother with a pout.
“I did. Mama/Papa said no.”
Her answer prompted a small glare from him. This time directed at you.
“You have her spoiled.”
“You’re just jealous I don't baby you anymore.” You retorted.
“I think it's because Alluka's a girl.” Gon added as he took another bag from you.
“She's not just a girl. She's a princess!” You lightly pinched her cheeks, causing her to let out a squeal.
You looked up to see their blonde friend standing awkwardly away. Perhaps not wanting to interrupt the four of you.
“You gonna introduce me to your friend?”
At the sound of your voice he straightened up. Both boys urging you towards him.
“Y/n, this is Kurapika. Kurapika, Y/n.”
It was a brief introduction. Well, you supposed it was time for you to plaster on a smile and try to befriend him. Hopefully things would go well.
“Hi. So you're the infamous Kurapika? Glad you could make a special guest appearance today. I hope the boys weren't too much.”
You extended your hand in greeting. Wishing you could focus your eyes on him to get a proper read of what he was feeling. He reciprocated your handshake with less enthusiasm than you were expecting.
To be fair, he probably just found out about you.
“Likewise. It's a pleasure to meet the person who they've been talking my ear off about for the last two hours. Apologies for interrupting your time together.”
He was surprisingly polite. Honestly, you were expecting him to be somewhat rowdy like the rest of their friends. Not that you minded.
You needed another levelheaded friend to talk to. And if you were correct, he was about two years younger than you.
But then things quickly started going downhill.
“My intel tells me you come from a clan like me? Do I have that right?” He asked, unawares that was not the right thing to say. Despite his intention to strike up a friendly conversation.
“Intel?” Your tone was panicked.
The mere mention of your past life enough to make you spiral. Something both boys could tell was happening from the way you stiffened.
“Uh Kurapika. Maybe now's not the-” Gon tried, but it was too late.
“I don't belong to any clan. I never did, so don't you ever bring it up again.” Ice.
Your demeanor was cold, an indication that you were mad. Though you tried to calm yourself. Maybe he didn't know not to ask that.
He couldn't have known.
You just didn't want to talk about it with anyone. Especially not a stranger you just met.
“Damn. I knew we shouldn't have told him.” Killua said, already knowing where this conversation was heading. He quickly covered Alluka's ears.
“I don't understand why you're so upset about it. Could the disagreement you had really be that irksome to you.” The blonde's tone dismissive.
The thing that inevitably set you off.
Irksome.
Like they didn't just try to kill you half a year ago. Like they didn't murder your sister right in front of you. Like they didn't turn your best friend against you.
“I said drop it. It's none of your business. But you know what should've been, since you're so keen on family.”
“Y/n don't-” Gon tried once more, tugging on your arm to get you attention.
“Checking up on your friends every once in a while. Do you even know about what happened to these two?”
“Guys,” Killua warned.
“Of course I know. You think I'm an idiot not to know about the Chimera Ant situation?” Kurapika's voice increasing in volume to match yours.
“Yeah? You know about Illumi hunting down Killua and his sister while his family watched? About the two of them almost being killed to better their psycho family's power? You know about Gon being hospitalized? About how nothing short of a miracle saved his life? You know about all that?”
Judging by the shocked expression on his face, he didn't know. He glanced over to the two boys to verify. And when they looked down to avoid his eyes, he knew you weren't lying.
He hadn't been a very good friend, had he?
“Didn't think so. So next time you think I owe you anything, think about how you've never given anyone anything. I don't owe you shit. I don't owe you an explanation and I sure as hell don't owe you my time!”
Was it a petty argument that got way out of hand?
Absolutely.
The truth is, if you could get past your one difference, the two of you would see you have a lot in common. Might've even become good friends.
But you can never trust someone who takes the people they care about for granted. Who had the opportunity to support their friend on their deathbed instead of chasing after shadows of the past. Who only lets anger and hatred guide their actions.
And Kurapika could never befriend someone who doesn't understand how good they have it. Who still has the opportunity to see their family instead of their corpses. And maybe he's envious of the fact. He'd give anything to spend five minutes with his clan while you can't even bare thinking about them for five seconds.
And while you two disliked each other, you'd just have to learn to tolerate the other for the sake of your friends.

MASTERLIST
An: I didn't know if I should add tags to this one because technically it's not apart of our main story. More like an expansion on the lore, if you can even call it that. Now, I love Kurapika, I really do. But I feel like our insert from Moon and Sun would absolutely despise him. On the bright side, I should be able to start uploading a little more frequently now. Might even get back to weekly updates. We'll see~

"Long Distance Call"- BUCK-TICK Lyrics: Sakurai Atsushi Music: Imai
Translation: Myself, aka 'Torches'. Do not repost without permission or else I will eat you whole.
聞こえる 聞こえるかい もう眠っていたんだね Can you hear? Can you hear me? You were still sleeping, right? 聞こえる 聞こえるよ ごめんよ起こしたね I can hear. I can hear you. Sorry, I woke you, right?
そう 大事な話なんだ 笑い話かも ああ… Yes- Because it's an important conversation...perhaps a laughable conversation...Ahh...
聞こえる 聞こえるかい もう少しこのままで Can you hear? Can you hear me? Just stay a little longer like this 聞こえる 聞こえるよ ありがとう聞いてくれて I can hear. I can hear you. Thank you for listening to me.
もう しばらく会えないんだ おやすみ言うよ Well- because we can't meet for awhile...I am saying goodnight この電話 最後に それじゃ… This phone call...in this last moment*...it's just that...
愛しているよMama 他には何も無いさ I love you Mama. There is nothing else at all. 愛している 愛してる 他に何も I love you, I love you, there is nothing else
愛しているよMama もう上手く話せないよ I love you Mama. I'm still not able to say it well 愛している 愛している 他に何も I love you, I love you, there is nothing else
もう しばらく会えないんだ おやすみだけを Well- Because we can't meet for awhile, I just wanted to say goodnight... この電話 最後に じゃあね… This phone call...in this last moment*...see you soon...
愛しているよMama 他には何も無いさ I love you Mama. There is nothing else at all 愛している 愛してる 他に何も I love you, I love you, there is nothing else
愛しているよMama もう上手く聞き取れないよ I love you Mama. I'm still not good at comprehending it 愛している 愛している 他に何も I love you, I love you, there is nothing else
心が壊れていく 誰かを傷つけにいく My heart is actively breaking-- I'm going to fucking stab someone 止まらない 止まらない 俺は行くよ You won't stop me, you won't stop me, I'm really gonna do it
愛しているよMama もう上手く話せないよ I love you Mama. I'm still not able to say it well. 愛している 愛している 他に何も…」 I love you, I love you, there is nothing else..."
* This word with this phrasing didn't sit right with me. It was really odd. Despite being such a simple word with common usage, I felt like I was missing something. After some digging I discovered that a more archaic meaning for this word is 'one's final moments alive/one's death moment'. You can also say this with the exact same pronunciation but with alternate kanji- 最期。The final phone call, the last moments alive- the double entendre fits the pieces together.
-----
I have been in a dark mood since last night, and while waiting for the train to come, spotify decided to random shuffle away from my playlist to a Buck-Tick song I had never heard before. I had actually been thinking of Atsushi, so imagine my shock to look down at my phone and see the words "Long Distance Call". As the song played, I had to stop myself from crying on the platform.
Since coming home, I sat down immediately to translate it. Maybe it's because I was around so many punkass teenage boys throughout the years in Japan, but Atsushi's love letter to his lost mother feels like it is written by his teenage self. There is that touch of sixteen, seventeen year old boy- brooding, aloof, too cool to be around anyone, beautiful. And who likely gave his mother, who he loved very much, more trouble than he meant to. She passed away in the early 90s but it seems this song came out in 2002. Even so, I feel like he has gone back to that time to write this song, and it is as raw, and emotional, and straightforward as he probably was. Except, there is that implication that he can finally say those words he perhaps tragically had a hard time saying before.
It is a beautiful and haunting song. How can you not cry listening to it? Of course, he is with her again now. And although this letter was not meant for me, as I was brooding myself again thinking about his passing, to look down at my own phone and see this unfamiliar "Long Distance Call" made me feel as if perhaps he was seeing me in that moment, too. I hope my translation is a worthy offering.

Hatchetfield OC Week Day 7: Finale
Sam sat at the table, eating breakfast. His parents were there too, consuming their food silently. His dad was on the couch, his mom was at the table, and both of them were scrolling through Instagram. All of a sudden, almost synchronized, they put their phones down and face Sam.
"Honey, you've been getting older," his mom says, "and I think it's time... you join the Church." She hands him a pamphlet, and ze reads through it.
"The initiation meeting is two weeks from now. We want you to be ready," his father says.
Sam ignores them, like he always does. After breakfast, ze throws the pamphlet in the trash and covers it up with napkins. Ze's not gonna join his parent's stupid church.
~~~~~
Sam gazed out the window of the limousine. There ze was, dressed up in a blazer, hair done nicely; about to join the Church of the Starry Children, the odd cult he was born into. Honestly, after reading what he read of the Black Book? It didn't sound too bad. I mean sure, there were many rituals most people would find disgusting, but Sam never was most people.
The initiation ceremony is easy enough, actually, when ze gets there. Just a reading of an ancient text, and boom, he's in.
It's what he has to do after that's weird.
Sam has never seen so much blood, and ze still doesn't know where that human limb came from.
~~~~~
"So, you really do love me? This isn't a prank?"
Ruth is sitting on the grass, next to Sam, wearing a tank top and shorts. Sam is wearing his dark grey tee and some grey pants. The two are looking over a lake; Sam wanted to show it to Ruth because of how beautiful it was at this time of day. The sun is setting, and its rays stretch out into the sky and the lake, making it all a picturesque pink and orange and yellow color.
"~No, this is no prank/I see you're beauty, and my mind goes blank/I guess I never really knew/The right way to tell you~" Sam sings. Despite his best efforts, ze could never convince Pokey to drop the singing thing. True to his word, however, Ruth doesn't find it weird. In fact, she giggles, and sighs dreamily.
"I never thought anyone would love me like that, you know, but you..." she starts, and kisses him on the lips.
Their mouths mesh together awkwardly, but to them, it's paradise.
After they finish kissing, they stare at each other for a good, long while, then back at the lake. Ruth leans her head on Sam's shoulder, and ze brings his arm around her waist. They stay like that until the sun sets and the sky finally turns inky black, dotted with a million stars.
~~~~~
Sam walks up to Roman Murray, the leader of the Church. Ze focuses on his greying moustache, and tries not to fidget with zer hands.
"~Okay, try not to tremble...~" zesings to zemself, and then sings "~Is the church accepting new members?~" to Mr. Murray.
He looks up from his book. "Why, of course! Who are you planning on recruiting?"
"~My girlfriend...~" Sam blurts out. He's very excited to call Ruth his girlfriend, but ze's still very worried Mr. Murray will get mad at zem and reprimand zem for asking him.
"Ah, young love," Mr. Murray says wistfully. "I'll tell you what: I'll schedule an introduction meeting on Saturday. I hope to see you and your girlfriend there."
"~Thank you~" Sam says, and walks back to the limousine.
~~~~~
Sam pulls out his phone, and goes to the contact "Ruth 😘🥰😍🥵🔥"
sammy boi: hey!!!
Ruth 😘🥰😍🥵🔥: heyyyyyy 😏
sammy boi: do u wanna come to my church on saturday
Ruth 😘🥰😍🥵🔥: sure
Sam put away his phone, ignoring the "typing..." right below Ruth's contact name. Ze looks over the lake near his house, alone this time, and breathes it all in.
Ze has what he wants, and that's what matters; no matter what ze had to do to get it.
okay so i did it! i wrote the thing! hooray! This is a LOT later than usual but writers block is a bitch lol
I'm probrably gonna write more about Ruth and Sam lol. Also I have SO many ideas for Zoinked you wouldn't believe

Korea and Japan in TUA S3
Not sure if there are other Korean Umbrella Academy fans here, but I'm conflicted about this as a Korean. I've talked to my mom (who watches TUA with me) about it, and I warned her that the new season features the rising sun flag design since I binged the whole season today and am watching it the second time with her whenever she has time. But I still don't know what to think.
So basically Koreans view the rising sun flag much like how the west views the Nazi symbol because Imperial Japan killed a shit ton of our people, burned our historical artifacts/documents, tried to eliminate the Korean language, etc. All those fun things throughout history and war, and while Japan normalizes the symbol and non-Koreans don't care enough to even know, Koreans don't accept it. Some Koreans boycott popular Japanese anime because so many of them feature rising sun flags as a normal, everyday thing.
The thing is, my mom and I both know that non-Koreans, especially westerners, don't know and/or don't care because it's never taught in history classes and Asian history is like a niche thing. So when I watched season 3 and recognized the symbol, I was disappointed but I wasn't super upset about it because TUA is an American show with an American cast and crew so obviously there was probably no malicious intent. The other Japanese details throughout Hotel Oblivion (samurai, sushi, etc.) were odd and out of place in my opinion, but they didn't offend me at all because those aren't reminiscent of Japan's war crimes during WWII.
Korean viewers living in Korea will be upset, though.
Honestly, looking back on the entire season, it was a bit sad to see as a Korean fan that they decided to include so many Japanese themes (though they did seem a bit stereotypical, idk how actual Japanese viewers feel about them) IN ADDITION to the controversial rising sun symbol, when there has been very poor representation of Korean culture despite one of the main cast members being Korean.
The awkward and short subway train scene, very non-Korean looking household, Korean lines that were apparently adlibbed by Justin and not even added in the official script... TUA has never been amazing at accurately representing other countries' cultures so this wasn't a surprise, but I think making the Hotel Oblivion Japanese for no reason and adding the rising sun onto the door on top of that kind of highlighted the awkwardness I was feeling throughout the episodes.
I still like TUA. Five is one of my favorite characters ever and I probably won't let this stop me from watching the show since no one outside of Korea and Japan cares enough to mean anything bad by using the flag. I just didn't expect the symbol to pop up so randomly in the middle of the show, it was like a jumpscare lmao
Overall? I'm hoping for a season four, really am; I need to see those umbrella idiots get their powers back. But if the TUA writers are gonna continue to include different cultural aesthetics, I believe they could try harder to be thorough with cultures and languages as much as they are with LGBTQ+ and POC topics in an American setting.
The Handler speaking Yiddish, the Swedish lines not sounding Swedish, the rising sun... At least one issue per season, though some are less acknowledged than others. Either way, it's getting kinda weird for me.
I'm gonna write another post about my overall thoughts about the new season, and then one more about Five as a character. Just wanted to vomit out this mental turmoil I just suffered from into words I could read before I could think about anything else.

Maybe this is horrible but it was the only thing that my mind thought.
the avengers entrusts the new recruits to Natasha and she notices that r is the worst of the group and that the other recruits make fun of her, she decides that she is going to train her in his days off to be the best, of course in the process both of them ends up falling in love.
feel free of change anything or not use it at all.
Improvement Rewards
word count: 2.6k
pairing: Natasha Romanoff x reader
warnings: maybe like one swear word, lmk if i need to add any more!
A/N: sorry this has taken so long! also i'd like to apologize for the fact that i'm terrible at writing slowburns dsfjkhdsfjkhdsf but i hope u enjoy anon!!
"Again," she told everyone.
It took all your effort not to let out a long groan. Your forehead was dripping with sweat, and you could already feel your entire body aching.
Your partner, Chaz smirked at you.
Natasha split you into pairs, partnering with one of you herself due to the odd number of recruits.
Before you had time to get ready, he landed a hard punch on your stomach, causing you to stumble backwards.
You ended up falling flat on your back before Natasha could even blow her whistle.
"Surprise, surprise," Ashley, one of your fellow recruits, muttered from across the room.
Natasha let out a long sigh, walking over to you.
"You two," she motioned to Chaz and Liam, the recruit she was sparring with. "You're paired up now. L/N, you're with me,"
You nodded, getting back to your feet. As soon as you got in a ready stance, she swung her leg at you.
Your knees buckled, sending you to the ground yet again.
You heard laughter at your sides coming from the other recruits, causing your cheeks to burn red with embarrassment.
"Why didn't you block?" She asked. "You had the perfect opportunity,"
"I, uh..." you hesitated.
"Yeah, Y/N," said Nikki, the last of the recruits. "Why didn't you block?"
Natasha glared at her, then at the other recruits who were snickering.
"All of you out. Now."
You started to get up, but she held her hand up to stop you.
"Not you,"
So you waited in anticipation as the others began to file out of the room. Liam made eye contact, making an obnoxious face before he walked out.
Once the door closed, Natasha held her hand out, prompting you to grab it as she pulled you up.
"What's going on, L/N?"
You bit your tongue as everything caught up to you, trying to prevent tears from forming in your eyes.
"I thought I could do this," you started telling her. "I don't know why, but I just can't. They all hate me, 'cause I can't learn as fast as them, and I'm our group's weak link."
Her heart dropped at your confession. Despite your efforts to avoid it, tears did end up forming in your eyes.
"I'm not good enough, I'm not where I need to be. Honestly, it's probably a good idea if I quit,"
"I'm gonna stop you right there," she said, putting a hand on your shoulder. "You know what? You are the group's weak link. You're not where you should be, and I'm not sure if they hate you per say, but they definitely don't like you,"
You turned your head to the side. Of all the things you expected her to say, it certainly wasn't this.
"Thanks," you said sarcastically. Of course, you'd normally never be brave enough to be sarcastic with your mentor. But considering the fact that you probably wouldn't be here much longer, you really didn't care now.
"Those things you said are true. However, you said that you can't do it, that you can't learn as fast as them. That's false. You have great potential, Y/N, I'd hate to see that go to waste,"
"Everybody has potential, doesn't mean that everyone can actually do it,"
"I'm going to be increasing your training hours. You will meet me here for one-on-one training every morning at 6:00 AM and we'll go until 8:00 and then you'll have group training."
"But-"
"No buts. I'll see you early tomorrow morning."
Without another word, she stood up and left the room, leaving you dumbfounded.
-
Nonetheless, you were up and ready to go the next morning. You arrived at the door at 5:50. As soon as Natasha heard your knock, she opened the door to let you in.
"Ready?"
"Ready,"
You got in your fighting stance, smiling once she gave you a nod of approval.
She came at you fast, resulting in your staggering backwards.
"There's your first problem," she told you. "Your first instinct is to run, and then you forget everything I've ever taught you,"
"Shouldn't I try to dodge though?"
"Sure, but do it strategically,"
You turned your head to the side, unsure what she meant until she walked up behind you.
She placed her hands on your back, encouraging you to lean back at an angle, slightly to the left. She then placed one of her hand over your own, reaching it in front of you.
"That's how you could've avoided it strategically," she explained to you. "Turning your body in the opposite angle I came in, but being ready to block,"
You nodded, making sense of everything she was saying.
"Let's try it again,"
She came at you from a similar angle to before, so you did exactly what she taught you. Of course, your hand slipped against hers and she was able to grab it before pulling you in to restrain your limbs.
"Better."
So it went on like that for the next two hours, she gave you as many tips as she could and watched as you slowly made minor improvements.
Once your fellow recruits entered the room, some of them took notice to how you were already sweating.
Luckily, none of them said anything as she handed out the fighting sticks to everyone. You kept in mind, what she told you, so you were reasonably better at dodging their attacks today.
You were almost convinced you imagined it, but Natasha winked at you from across the room.
You smiled. You were glad you didn't quit.
-
Three weeks later, and you were currently pinned against the mat in the middle of your training session with Natasha.
"Come on," she told you. "You can do better than that,"
She held your arms over your head, and she was pressing her entire bodyweight into you so you couldn't get up.
Breathing heavily, you looked at the position you were in as she stared you down. Finally, you kicked your leg out, bending your knee so you could turn.
Once you managed to get her off of you, she smiled proudly. Just as you returned her smile, she kicked your legs, sending you back down again.
"Ow,"
"Distracted, are we?"
You rolled your eyes as she pinned you once again. She smirked, squeezing your wrists.
"You're improving, I'll give you that,"
You blushed at her words, trying as hard as you could to get her off of you again. She laughed at your attempts, only pressing down even more.
Eventually, you managed to bend your hands enough to press your nails into the top of her hand.
You took her shock to your advantage, getting her off you as you stood up again.
"Better," she muttered.
You smiled.
"When the others come in, I'm gonna be preparing you guys for your final day of training, where Nick Fury tests you and determines if you're actually ready to become Agents,"
"Okay,"
"I really want you to pass, and one of the tests is one-to-one sparring, so you're gonna be switched around a lot today to get used to their fighting styles,"
You nodded, trying to mentally prepare yourself.
She was proud of how far you'd come, and she couldn't wait until you were an Agent too. She knew you had potential from the beginning, and she had no problem helping you out the way she had.
She just hoped it was enough.
-
The next few weeks went by as quick as they came. By now, you were able to knock down almost all your fellow recruits. Except for Liam, who you were currently going against.
He took a swing at you, hitting you right in the stomach. You clutched your chest as you tried to catch your breath. He smirked, swinging his leg up to kick your lower stomach again.
You fell down, hardly able to breathe at this point. Instead of pinning you down, he sent yet another blow, aiming for your head this time.
Unfortunately for you, your vision blurred as your head became fuzzy. You tried to get up, but instead you let out a loud groan as you succumbed to the pain.
-
When you woke up in the hospital, Natasha was right by your side.
"Agent Romanoff," you said, cracking a smile.
She let out a sigh of relief, sitting on the bed next to you.
"How are you feeling?"
"Kinda sore,"
"I will not hesitate to kick him out of the program if necessary, I did not teach you guys to hurt your opponent when they're already down,"
You smiled again, then shook your head.
"He's an asshole, but you don't need to do that,"
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah,"
You thought she was gonna get up after that, but she stayed. She never shifted her gaze away from you, exchanging smiles every once in awhile.
It was only when your eyes began to close again that she stepped off the bed and sat back down in the chair next to you.
You would be okay.
-
You ended up getting out of the hospital a few days later, of course, Natasha was there as you walked out, offering to drive you back to SHIELD headquarters.
"What all have you guys done since I've been gone?" You asked.
"Just more prep for your exams, but I've put Liam on cleaning duty,"
You laughed, smiling at the thought of that.
"Do you have a date for the exams?" You asked.
"Fury sent it to me yesterday actually, but it's gonna be next Friday,"
"What?" You asked, your eyes widening. That was too soon, especially after your injury.
She sensed your worry, so she put a gentle hand on your knee, rubbing her thumb back and forth.
"You're gonna be okay," she said softly. "I'll make sure of it,"
Despite your anxiety about it, you smiled. You trusted her.
The next day, she had you up at 4:00 in the morning for one-on-one training. You were exhausted, but you pushed through.
Every time she knocked you down, you got up again, coming at her just a little harder than before.
You were covered in sweat, almost at the verge of tears, but you weren't gonna give up.
"Do you want to take a break?" She asked.
"No, I'm okay,"
She shrugged, getting ready to go again. Getting into starting position, you tucked a loose strand of hair behind your ear.
You noticed her take a step forward, so you went for her legs. Just as she was about to swing at you, you ended up sending her down.
She didn't get up at first, causing your heart to drop to your stomach.
"Na-Agent Romanoff!" You immediately went over, making sure she was okay.
She wiped the blood away from her nose. To your surprise, she was smiling wider than she ever had.
Words couldn't express how proud she was.
She stood up, still smiling. Your worried expression shifted into a confused one as she pulled you close.
"You're ready," she said. "You've come so far, and I have no doubt that you're gonna pass with flying colors."
-
Now, it was the last night before your exam. You had one last training session with Natasha. Your heart skipped a beat when she complimented your fighting skills.
Your cheeks were bright red, and you knew it wasn't from the training.
Despite the butterflies in your stomach, you managed to dodge all her hits.
She noticed the redness in your cheeks, and the way you would quickly look away when she made eye contact.
She especially noticed the way you would almost gasp when she made contact.
Despite this, she kept going as normal.
When you were both out of breath from sparring, you were still practically bouncing around like an excited puppy.
"I think you're good for tomorrow," she said.
Without saying anything, you walked over and wrapped your arms around her.
You were both covered in sweat, but neither of you cared as she pulled you into her.
You reached up, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Y/N..."
You let out a shaky breath, moving your hand to her cheek.
She knew she should stop you, but she couldn't bring herself to do it.
"Y/N, I'm supposed to be your mentor," she said. "Plus, I'm like 10 years older than you,"
"I don't care,"
Your lips were almost touching at this point. She wrapped her hand around the back of your neck, running her fingers through your hair.
Your lips ghosted over hers, but she finally managed to pull back.
"Let's wait 'til tomorrow, okay? You'll be an Agent too after you pass,"
You nodded, understanding where she was coming from. You'd be lying if you said you weren't disappointed though.
"You should get some rest now,"
You sighed, which prompted her to lean in and kiss your cheek.
"For good luck," she said with a wink.
"Does this mean I'll get a full one after I'm an Agent?"
"Maybe,"
She winked again, then pointed to the door.
Now, you really wanted to pass.
-
The first part of your exam was to show how fast you could load and unload weapons.
Luckily, you managed not to fumble too much, and finished at a somewhat decent time.
Natasha was standing next to Nick Fury as he observed. Whenever she made eye contact with you, she sent a small smile, silently wishing you good luck again.
For the sparring part, you were paired with Ashley. She always gave away her aim before hitting, so you were able to block every single one of her hits.
After you won, the next part was a shooting target.
Taking in a deep breath, you shot forward. You almost closed your eyes as the bullets went through the air.
But you finally let out a breath as they landed in the required area.
Natasha was almost as nervous as you, and Nick noticed this, but he didn't say anything to her about it.
The last part was a written exam. All five of you were in a small room, flipping through the pages as you bubbled in answers.
You gripped your pencil tight, trying to ignore the sounds of papers turning from the people around you.
Once the timer went off, you dropped your pencil, placing the test on the desk at the front of the room.
Now, all you had to do was wait.
-
After the test, you waited in your room. You refreshed the page about every 10 seconds, desperately waiting to see your score.
You jerked up at the sound of a knock at your door. You answered it, confused to see Natasha standing there.
She was smiling with an almost mischievous look in her eyes.
"What is it?" You asked, rolling back and forth on your feet as you resisted the urge to refresh the page yet again.
She said nothing, but handed you the piece of paper she was holding.
Your jaw dropped as you read the information; you passed.
"I passed!"
She smiled at your excitement, leaning in to hug you.
"Congratulations, Agent,"
Before you knew it, you leaned in and crashed your lips to hers. She kept her hands at your sides as she moved her lips in sync to yours.
"I'm so proud of you, Y/N," she said once you disconnected for air.
"Thanks! You have no idea how happy I am right now,"
"I think I have an idea," she said, smirking. "Now, how about we go out together, Agent?"
"I'd really like that,"
She kissed you again, savoring the taste of your lips on hers.
You were definitely glad you didn't quit.

swatches | sirius black
summary: you had loved sirius black for longer than you could remember. through two wizarding wars and a harsh time in azkaban: you were head over heels. what happens when he misunderstood your relationship? everyone lives au lowkey as it should be!
pairing: Fem!Reader x Sirius (post books so they’re slightly older)
word count: 1.6k
warnings: misunderstandings, mention of pregnancy/getting pregnant
*
Two wars. You had survived two wars against the most powerful dark wizard ever and had no inclination to tell your longtime friend you loved him. You'd been head over heels for Sirius Black for the better part of two decades yet opted to keep your feelings to yourself – stating something about the timing not being right. But if not during a war – nay, two wars – when would the time be right? You'd been with other people, trying to get over the raven-haired beauty yet no one ever made you feel anything close to what you did with him.
He'd served years in Azkaban, convicted of some of the most heinous crimes against muggles and the reason behind his best friends death, but you knew he was innocent. Sirius Black was a lot of things but a traitor was not one of them. Now, years later, he was finally free – an innocent man to the world. Once the dark lord was defeated again, and things started to calm down, 12 Grimmauld Place wasn't needed for the order anymore so you insisted on helping Sirius clean it up.
Though you couldn't wash away the painful memories of his childhood, it didn't mean you couldn't try. Harry was old enough to live on his own now but after years apart he and Sirius wanted to catch up on lost time. The first order of business you planned was putting that horrid painting of Mrs. Black in the basement. It took a lot of spells to detach her from the wall but the relief that came across Sirius' face once she was gone was worth it. The two of you worked together tirelessly to bring brightness into the home for the first time since it was built. The Black family tree tapestry was peeled off and replaced with a fresh coat of white paint and a photo wall.
Photos of James, Lily, Marlene and other friends lost over the years lined the wall and memories flooded your senses. There were moments in time captured that reminded you of easier days. Your times at Hogwarts. Your summers at the Potters. You, Sirius and Remus, admired your handy work on the wall. You three had lost so much but the thankfulness you felt to still have each other was beyond you. Sirius wrapped his arm around you and pressed a kiss to your temple. Remus excused himself to spend time with Teddy, leaving you and your love alone. "Should we start clearing out some of the rooms?" You suggested despite not wanting to leave Sirius' side just yet.
He hummed in confirmation before (rather reluctantly) letting you go. The house had been empty and cold for years so in an attempt to revive it Harry, Remus, Tonks and baby Teddy were due to move in. You two started with the guest room that would become a nursery for Teddy. Magic made cleaning much easier but being around Sirius meant more time joking around than actually being productive.
"This whole bloody house smells like dirty boxes." He said with a huff and a wave of his hand to open the window.
The two of you sat for longer than you'd like to admit trying to put a crib together the muggle way. Soon you gave up and used magic, much to Sirius' dismay who insisted "it'll just be 5 more minutes". With a wave of your wand, the walls were coloured a soft sage green compared to the drab mud brown it was before. Things were finally coming together.
"Do you wonder what it's like?" Sirius asked as he set a few toys out onto the shelves.
"What what's like?" You asked from your spot at the bookshelf.
"Being a parent." He clarified.
You shrugged and put down your copy of ABCs with Merlin. "I suppose... I kind of assume I won't have kids. I'm too old now."
"Nonsense!" He replied quickly.
You raised your brows and crossed your arms. "I know you're about to mention something about Moony but shall I remind you he didn't carry the child?" You countered.
"You make it sound like you're ancient." He scoffed. "Don't rule it out, darling."
You let out a laugh and returned to your task of sorting the shelves. "It takes two to have a baby and I don't exactly have a lineup of people wanting to impregnate me.”
"I sure hope not." He said incredulously. "Now, what colour should the walls in the master room be?"
You furrowed your brows. What on earth did he mean by I sure hope not? Instead of letting yourself dwell on it later, you decided to outright ask him. "What's that supposed to mean?"
He looked perplexed. "What? The colour of the master room?"
"No, no... that you sure hope there isn't people lined up for me?" You said crossing your arms a tad defensively.
Sirius, to put things simply, had a habit of being rude sometimes without realizing it. So, you were expecting a backhanded comment about your looks or a joke about how long you've been single. "Well, wouldn't exactly be the best for my odds." He said with a chuckle. "Now, the room colour." He repeated holding the swatches up.
"To hell with the swatches Sirius! What are you talking about!" You all but yelled at him. Was this a joke? Did he find out you were in love with him and decided to subtly tease you about it? How had he even figured it out? You felt yourself going into overdrive. You were going to kill Moony. He had to be the one to tell him after all!
"The swatch is for your room too so it does matter," Sirius said bewildered.
"What?"
"What?" He repeated making you huff. He could be so frustrating sometimes.
"What do you mean my room?"
"Well, it's gonna be our room." He clarified.
You were surprised if that's what you could call it. Sirius thought you were moving in? And sharing a room with him? What on earth was happening? "Sirius, I'm not living here? I thought it was just you, Harry and Moonys family?"
"What? Why? It's meant to be a family home!" He protested with a pout that reminded you of the ones he wore as a student not getting his way with Professor McGonagall.
"We don't have room for me if Teddy has his own room. He'll need one as he grows up." You explained.
"That makes no sense! We would share a room."
"Why the hell would we share a room? We're adults we can't just be dormmates like we're kids." You said and he gave you a disgruntled look. “We've been sharing beds for 20 years why does it matter now?" He rebutted and crossed his arms.
"Don't you want privacy?" You asked.
"For what? We're dating so I don't see why you're being so weird about this."
Now that shocked you.
"DATING?" You shouted and he chuckled softly as he took a step towards you. "Since bloody when?"
"Well, we've had a weird relationship for 20 years I just assumed? Two wars change people." He said and you gaped at him.
"Bloody hell Sirius." You said rubbing your temples. This was not how you expected to find out your feelings were returned. Was this his loneliness speaking? His trauma?
"I'm sorry if I overstepped in thinking that..." He said rubbing the back of his neck and losing his confidence. He became sheepish under your scrutiny. Maybe it wasn't so outlandish of him to assume that. You two did kiss and cuddle a fair bit more than the average friends. But Sirius had always been fond of physical affection with his friends and you chalked it up to that. You honestly never expected him to feel the same way you did.
"I-" You began before swallowing down in an attempt to collect your thoughts. "-You weren't wrong. I just never really thought you'd feel that way about me."
He scoffed. "I've felt that way since we were in 5th year!"
"That makes no bloody sense! You hooked up with half the damn school but didn't look at me." You scoffed back.
"Because I was trying to hide my feelings like a dumb teenage boy! It killed me seeing you all over Peter so I deflected the only way I knew how." He countered. You rolled your eyes. You and Peter had gone out twice before realizing you were better off as friends.
"You don't get to do this Sirius. You can't just say you've liked me for more than 20 damn years and not made a move." You said pointing your finger at him accusingly.
"Need I remind you I was in prison for half of it. And I just asked what colour you want our room to be." He replied with a huff.
You were silent. He wasn't wrong after all but in your overflow of emotions, you chose to place all the blame on him. "I..." You looked down. "I'm sorry. I just always thought I wasn't your type."
He took a step closer and gently held your shoulders. "It's my fault for not letting you know how utterly in love with you I am."
Hearing those words come out of his mouth shot electricity through your body. It was a euphoric feeling you could definitely get used to feeling all the time. You looked up at him and cupped his cheek softly. For the first time, you realized the way you looked at him was the same way he looked at you: with utter love and devotion. You were so worried about not letting your feelings for him spill that you didn't realize you'd been dating the man of your dreams this whole time. The man you'd longed for but thought was unattainable.
"I love you too..." You said through happy tears. "I have for so long."
"Now darling, what colour for our bedroom?" He said with a perfect smirk and a kiss to your temple.
It took two wars but you and Sirius were creating the silly little family you always dreamed of.

SOOBIN | Snow White (1.5k)
The streets of the university were busier than usual, with various departments and classes loitering around the campus holding their own events for the Halloween festivities tonight. Your class decided to keep things simple, stating that you're already working hard enough with your studies so why not use this time to relax and well, not do much despite still participating. Yeah, that's it. You couldn't agree more.
So the entire class opted to hand out free candied apples to those that can recite the names of all seven dwarves in Snow White. It was that or going out dressed as said dwarves while aggressively singing the Heigh Ho song as you went around the campus. Although, you did spot a few classmates of yours earlier wearing dwarf costumes but then again you could've just been seeing things. Too much candied apples, you think.
“Y/N, let's head over there. A lot of people are gathering.” Your classmate, Soojin, tells you and the two of you follow your other classmates towards the crowd.
Soojin takes out a sign printed on paper that read: Free Candied Apples. It didn't even say anything about the condition in order to earn them, and lacked any indication that this was for a Halloween event. Perhaps your classmates took the “Let's take it easy.” advice too seriously. You ponder whether or not people would actually accept your sweet treats.
“Free food?” A guy with pink hair, carrying a huge duffel bag walks by and takes a look at the sign before eyeing the tray of candied apples in your hands. “Looks good. Don't mind if I do then.” He grins and was about to take one of the apples when Soojin grabs his hand.
“You get one if you can recite the names of all the seven dwarves in Snow White.” Soojin deadpans.
The guy retracts his hand. “The only dwarf I know is that Duck guy but oh well.” He sighs. One last look at the apples and the guy was scurrying away.
You look at Soojin and giggle. “I'm pretty sure he meant Doc.”
“He didn't even try.”
You tell Soojin that you'll roam around for a while to hopefully find more people who're interested for a quick bite. “Free Candied Apples if you can name all seven dwarves in Snow White!” You announce, repeating it twice for good measure.
From the corner of your eye, you spot a guy with blue hair fast approaching. You pretend not to see him until he called out.
“Hey!” The guy greets, now grinning in front of you. “These candied apples are free, right?”
You give him a look over and notice that he was already carrying around a bunch of goodies that you assume were also from other classes that were handing out free stuff. This guy was on a roll.
“Yup. If you can tell me the names of all seven dwarves then you get a free apple.” You smile back at him.
“That's easy.” The guy's smile grows wider with confidence. He must be the first person you've encountered tonight who looked so prepared to answer.
Soojin quickly calls your attention from afar, waving her hands frantically before pointing at the folder sticking out of the paper bag you'd brought along. “Oh!” You put the tray down on the bench and take out the folder, opening it. You look back at the guy with yet another smile. “Since you look like you can actually win this, I'm gonna have to write your name here on our customers list. Can you tell me your first name and department?”
“Soobin, Nursing Department.”
“Alright, thank you.” You say, writing his name before putting the folder back in the bag. “Okay, Soobin.”
The guy, Soobin, perks up after hearing his name. His eyes flutter towards the tray of candied apples that you were now holding.
“A dree apple in exchange for the seven dwa—.”
“Bashful, Doc, Grumpy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Happy, and Dopy.”
“...” A laugh escapes you when he started enumerating. You thought it was cute how he was too excited to even let you finish. “Impressive.” You tell him.
Soobin smirks, feeling pretty proud himself. “I memorized their names today in the shower. You never know when you're gonna need it during events like this, right?” He winks and you can't help but notice the dimple on his cheek. That just made him ten times cuter than he already was. You doubt he actually memorized their names in the shower though. From the looks of it, he might've been a Disney fan since he was a kid.
“Go ahead, pick one. You deserve it.” You raise the tray higher and Soobin happily takes the one in the middle.
He was about to say something as he took the apple when the two of you hear a faint chanting in the distance that got louder and louder as the seconds pass.
“You think there's some sort of performance going on?” Soobin asks but you couldn't quite hear him over the chanting.
“What?” You lean in closer and so does he.
“Is there a performance going on?” He asks, his voice a bit louder than before.
“I—”
Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho
Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho
Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho
It's home from work we go
In an instant, you were surrounded by a group of seven dwarves whose faces looked far too familiar for you not to notice. They're circling around you and Soobin, continuously chanting the song lyrics aggressively.
Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho
It's home from work we go
It didn't take a few seconds for you to piece together that these were your classmates who'd suggested the whole dwarf idea in the class meeting. Looks like they really wanted to do the thing afterall. But they weren't the only ones who'd gone against the class agreement tonight.
A mischievous grin creeps up your lips as you eye Soobin, naïvely chuckling at your classmates' buffoonery. Poor guy just had to pick the one in the middle, you thought.
There was a reason why you'd separated from Soojin earlier. And it was to switch one of the candied apples with one you'd personally tampered with. You'd gone through numerous trials and errors this morning but you'd finally succeeded in hiding a gummy worm inside an apple, and now that apple was in Soobin's hands. It was Halloween afterall, a little scare prank should be okay, right?
You eagerly watch as Soobin takes a bite, his attention still on your classmates, not noticing the gummy worm that had sprung out.
“Soobin!” You call out to him, hoping he'd hear you despite of your classmates' loud chants.
Soobin turns to face you and smiles, still chewing on the piece he just bit off. “Yes?”
“How does it taste?” You ask, trying your best not to sound too obvious.
Soobin continues to chew on the apple, thinking that the texture felt a little odd. As if something unfamiliar was mixed along the snack. “It tastes great.” He says despite the odd feeling in his mouth. “I'm a huge fan of caramel.”
He wished caramel and apple were the only things he tasted in his mouth right now but there was something else. A taste that he couldn't quite describe.
“That's good to hear. We put in a lot of effort in making them tonight.” Well, you put a lot of effort in inserting the gummy worm but he'll find out about that soon. “We especially wanted it to look right.”
“Looks and tastes pretty good to me.” Soobin says, looking down at the treat in his hand. His eyes widen when he spots something small in the middle, moving around in a swaying motion. The weird texture in his mouth, the unfamiliar taste mixed in with the caramel, and now this thing inside the apple— this thing that had its head bitten off of it's body— Soobin was quite sure of it. He had eaten a worm.
A worm.
Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho
It's home from work we go
“Soobin, is something wrong?” You couldn't hold back the grin in your face.
Soobin looks at you and then back at the apple. “I think I'm gonna—”
He wasn't able to finish his sentence the apple falls from his hand and onto the ground, his body soon following after. One of your classmates manages to catch him and you put the tray down and hurry to his side.
“Oh shit. I think he fainted.” Your classmate tells you and you gulp. “We'll get him to the infirmary.”
In a split second, all seven dwarves were huddled around Soobin, hoisting him up and quickly maneuvering their way towards the infirmary. You were about to run after them when Soojin approaches you, Soobin's candied apple in her hand.
“Care to explain?” She dangles the piece of fruit in front of you and you frown.
Perhaps putting gummy worms in apples was a bad idea after all.
Tumblr media
Soobin furrows his brows, feeling quite uncomfortable with the amount of arms holding his body up while taking him towards who knows where. He makes a mental note to himself: stop playing fainting pranks on people.

I'm just gonna go ahead and make a new post to respond to your points Katie (@jonesgirl88) so that we're not constantly reblogging and trying to load all of those gifs.
Jump to the DLO dance: there is a war going on in Oliver's head and the fact Eric can act that so we can see it? Brilliant. Chef's kiss. He's so torn and you can feel it and your heart breaks for both of them. He's holding her hand to his heart but Shane is also physically on his right side. Her chin is nearly resting on his right shoulder and he's pulled her close to his right side. What say you?
I noticed this too, of course. But first - Eric and Kristin deserve awards. All of the awards. They act beautifully, and they play off of each other so well - they're wonderful scene partners. Okay anyway. Yes, Shane is physically on his right side and has many points of contact along that side (like you said, her chin is nearly on his shoulder) but I pointed out their hands specifically because they are originally positioned away from their bodies. Shane and Oliver's physical closeness is a given in this moment because dancing is intimate. It requires that a lot of you be in contact with a lot of your partner. But originally Oliver and Shane's hands are extended away from them until Oliver pointedly draws them in and places Shane's hand over his heart. This movement is unnecessary in the context of ... well, anything. It's a purely instinctive and intimate move. He could have simply let go of her hand, or drawn it closer and then held it in some other position, but no: he pulls it right in against him. That's why I included it. I'm sure that it was included in the blocking and written in to the script because we're meant to notice it.
I could write for days about that DLO dance scene. THE. FREAKING. CHEMISTRY. I blush ridiculously easily (seriously it's A Problem and I hate it) and I would have been crimson that whole time if I were Kristin. The Tenderness. The Tension. The way his eyes dart back and forth right before he lets her go because he's so at war with himself: kiss her or let her go? O.Y.E.
They're standing in a line (because they're being given awards) but he's turning towards her and she's turning towards him. I just...I can't with these two.
This is totally A Thing©. Shane and Oliver both have a tendency to turn in toward each other like that - but especially Shane. It's an unconscious attempt to take refuge in Oliver and his strength, I think. She often does it in times when she's seeking comfort and closeness/affection. That moment where Shane is sleeping on Oliver's shoulder is one my favorite moments of it, but there's another one that's a small moment (that apparently was either filmed in a longer moment and cut, or aired as a longer moment/actual hug in one of the international versions).
Tumblr media
Right before the scene fades into the next one we see Shane turn herself even more into Oliver's left side and tuck her head, as if she's going to bury her face in his shoulder. I wish we'd been gifted with more of this moment! Look at the way she tucks her arm into him and tips her head - she even kind of pushes her hip into his side. I just love this moment a lot.
1) Shane is shown to be freaking out when closed in the vault. Her fear seems to trigger at odd times? She's fine when she learned there's 13 hours of air; she's fine when she learns there's actually less than 5 hours of air; she's fine when she's bored and wants to play a game; but Katherine might be dead so she freaks out? I get it, she believes their fate to be tied together but then why wasn't she more fearful before they started reading the letters? It just doesn't make a lot of sense.
I think for a large part of this Shane was doing a good job of distracting herself and focusing on something else. But reading the letters made them both emotional: they connected with something poignant in those letters. They're reading about two people who fall in love despite their circumstances and share something beautiful even if it's only words - and then find out at the end that these two people may not have actually been able to be together. Not only does that mirror their situation, but all of a sudden it seems like they might never have the chance to be together either (to Shane) because, oh yeah, they're also in danger of not breathing anymore - and I think that just brought her fear to the surface. Also, it's a small moment, but Shane wasn't too thrilled about having to go into the vault at all. When she first sees it she hesitates and says "in there?" like she'd rather not go anywhere near it. I always took it as a small nod to the fact that Shane might not have a love of small spaces. We've never seen it mentioned again though, so who knows.
I know it's part of the story but he literally just wrote he's willing to give things with Holly another chance but then spends his time thinking of Shane when reading the letters.
Yes! And I have always taken this as another indication that, at this point, Oliver is saying what he feels he should have said long ago. He's making the effort he feels duty bound to make. I mean, I think part of him does want to put in the effort - but that part is his head. His rational mind, and probably his memories of Holly and his affection for her, and the importance he puts on his marriage vows. This is another reason why I truly don't think his heart is with Holly anymore, or in his marriage. AT NO POINT after he writes that letter and tucks it away does he think of Holly. He's reading powerful, moving love letters between two people and the only person he thinks about is Shane? And - we don't find this out until later, but still - the letter he does write to Holly isn't that romantic. He promises to try to see her dreams through her eyes, and says that he's willing to change, but there's nothing about how much he loves her or how her absence has affected his heart or his life. Maybe because Oliver didn't really believe when he was writing it that he was in danger? I don't know. But it's interesting.
That hand grab!! ... And then the way she looks at him as he sings along at the end when Rita wins?? I can't with this man. I can't with this woman.
Um, yes. Shane takes Oliver's hand and he just ... short circuits. It's hilarious. And they're so smitten with each other it's ridiculous.
And in that hospital scene, Oliver absolutely would have let anyone sleep on his shoulder like that. But it wasn't anyone: it was Shane, and it was Shane after all of the emotional intimacy they shared in The Treasure Box; and, once again, it was Shane turned into his side like Oliver offered to let her lay her head there, or she knew what she was doing when she did, because she's not facing forward in the chair with her head to one side like she just accidentally fell asleep and then her head sort of slid to one side. She's angled her body into his. Her feet are pointing toward him. Her hand is just under/next to his arm. How did they get to that moment? I NEED TO KNOW.
(I always understood Jordan to just be an angel. Definitely open to interpretation though.)
OLIVER IS THE ANSWER TO HER LETTER. His words, his faith, his person is the answer to Shane's childhood prayer she never forgot. He opens the wound but it's destined he's the one to help her heal.
Oliver is the embodiment of Shane's hope. Jordan couldn't answer her letter because it had to be Oliver, which he realized. And before he leaves the chapel he says to Oliver "take good care of that little letter writer." HE'S TALKING ABOUT SHANE. In the Impossible Dream, Shane tells Oliver that he's given her something she'll never forget: "a little hope for this world." Oliver. Is. Shane's. Hope. Oh my gosh! She's his heart, he's her hope. How tooth-rottingly, disgustingly sweet. I love it.
Extra point: Kristin can rock a leather skirt...like hot damn woman.
A) she always looks so good, but yes, this leather skirt and periwinkle/lavender top is one of my favorite looks on her, and B) I love her fashion and style and aspire to be that fashionable one day.
Holly and Oliver try to have a conversation with words and they fail.
This literally just occurred to me: Holly herself points out that she and Oliver suck at having actual conversations. Physically they click, so they obviously had a lot of chemistry, but they struggle to just talk to one another. Juxtapose that with Shane, who literally understands Oliver so well and on such a deep level that she not only understands him when no one else does, she can actively translate him. The reunion in HG instantly comes to mind here. She translates in real time for the audience what Oliver means ("And I might be the only person on Earth who understands what you just said!") But she also translates what he says for their waitress in OIAM ("Oh, he just means that people weren't having their booshes (or however you spell that) amused in the 20th century.")
In the Pilot and The Masterpiece, things get McSteamy so quickly but it never starts out that way ... He's trying for the sake of his marriage one last time but his head and heart aren't in it.
Exactly! The pull between him and Shane is magnetic. It's natural and impossible to ignore. This is why I maintain that even if Holly had changed her mind and asked to work on their relationship it never would have worked. Oliver was in love with Shane by this point even if he wouldn't say it or wasn't ready to acknowledge it (although Jordan played a part in making Oliver more aware of this truth. Hard to ignore when a freaking angel points out to you how important someone is to you.)
To Holly, kissing Oliver is akin to breaking promises to herself ... To Shane, kissing Oliver is akin to keeping promises.
Well, you just blew my mind. This is so true! Holly tells us that the only way she could see to live her dream was to stop kissing Oliver (insinuating that it was also to leave him behind); Shane's dream seems to just be ... Oliver. Sharing a life with him; delivering dead letters with him; loving him.
BRB, sobbing over this stupid show and these idiots in love.
I do think that Holly and Oliver parted amicably. I can't decide if I think that Holly asked about Shane, or if she made a comment about her (directly or indirectly). I kind of feel like Holly was more the type to make a comment than ask a question.
I am dying over the logistics of Oliver actually buying that porch swing. Well dressed Oliver scouring the aisles of Walmart at like midnight for the perfect porch swing while surrounded by a bunch of people in their pajamas and college kids on middle of the night snack runs because they're marathoning TV shows instead of studying? Hilarious. Headcanon accepted.
Back to the topic at hand...I do think some of the left/right stuff is purely ease of blocking
As do I. I'm definitely reading more into it than I'm meant to at some points, there's just SO MUCH of it and it's so fun to contemplate that I went for it.
THE HUG IN TRUTH BE TOLD.
hahahahahahaaa ... the way that Shane literally just drops everything and wraps her arms around him slays me. The stunned little pause where Oliver's arms are just up in the air for a second, as if he's somehow surprised at the force of her hug despite having watched her move toward him, and then he tentatively puts his arms on her back and then ... he holds her a little tighter. Ugh. UGH. I DIE.
CAN WE TALK ABOUT OLIVER IN FLANNEL WITH THE SLEEVES ROLLED UP??
Yes. A million times, yes. Oliver with his sleeves rolled up? Outstanding. Oliver in flannel? An absolute vision. Oliver in flannel with his sleeves rolled up? I C A N N O T.
There will be more. I need to make the gifs, but there's going to be a part 4. And probably 5. In fact, I think this is just going to become a series of Things I Need To Scream About™ with supporting gif evidence.
I'll try to break it up though, so there's just ShOliver stuff, just Shane stuff, and just Oliver stuff. And then all Postables stuff because they're the cutest little Postal family ever.

Spinner headcanons
Tumblr media
((There's a lot of text, but I hope you guys enjoy, also this list contains the OCS that are Spinner's family members))
I stumbled across head canon list that mentioned him being half Hispanic, and i 100% agree
Total himbo
Bilingual boiiiii!! (Well he knows english, but not fluently, but he knows the basics ) at home his family used a mix of Japanese and Spanish while talking
(it's a wholesome jumble of language)
HE!! HAS!!!TWO!! MOMS!!! (Lesbiems babyyyy)
His mama (Spin calls her ama) met his mom when she came to Japan to study abroad
Spinner is the youngest of seven (two older brothers and four older sisters)
(Let's be real, he totally has youngest sibling vibes)
Canonically spinner is the least lizard like in his family so,,,,,,
Lowkey jealous of his siblings because they looked cooler in his eys (most have tails, longer claws, sharper teeth, etc)
As a kid, Spinner idolized his siblings. But he was closest the eldest of the family, his brother, let's call him Romero
Despite Shuichi's rough voice, he actually sings really nice!
Knows how to play guitar (his brother taught him, it was one of the many things they bonded over)
I have always imagined Spinner being born with depression, but the bullying just made it so much worse.
SAD HEAD CANON ALERT (tw: mentions of self harm and bullying)
The Iguchi family is no stranger to slurs, beatings, and vandalism based on how they look. They had come up with systems to protect themselves (travel in groups of no less than three, be home at a certain time, do NOT start fights or taunt people, etc) and it worked, for a while.
The bullying wasn't as bad in his younger school yeats becauze be always could rely on at least of of his siblings to protect him. But as he go older and his siblings aged out of school system, it escalated.
Petty insults were changed into full on slurs, trips and shoves in the hallways became full on circle beatings, walks home from school became races to safety.
Teachers never did anything because deep down they agreed with what everyone else thought.
During this, his family was going through a tough spot financially, mentally, and emotionally.
And because he didn't want to stress his family out, Spinner never told anyone about how bad the bullying had gotten, or how his was doing emotionally and mentally.
However the bullying lead to Shuichi often cutting class, and eventually dropping out of school at the start of his third year
This caused a lot more stress fpr everyone and often was the source of a lot of fights between him and his family
Over time, Spinner grew numb to everything, good and bad. To combat the numbness, Spinner took to self harm.
It lasted for about three years (started at 13, ended at 16)
Life at and away from home was getting too much for Spinner to handle, so he left.
At age 17, Spinner ran away.
He worked odd jobs and kept a pretty low profile for three years.
Then he saw HIM. Hero Killer Stain. He had found his new calling, something worth living for.
A couple months into his "vigilante" career, he met Grian and was soon added to the vanguard action squad, which was soon upgraded to the league of villian.
END OF THE SAD
Was probably in some for of gymnastic program in his younger years (I'm saying this because the thought of Spinner being able to do the splits has been in my mind for a while)
Because of his quirk he does experience shedding, but it only happens once a month
Much like Tsuyu Asui, the cold is to make Spinner's movements slower, and if cold enough, his body will slowly start shutting down (owo angst material)
He can also lick his eyes, but because his body naturaly keeps his eyes moist he doesn't need to. It's just a cool party trick really
He!!!!makes!!!gecko!!!noises!!!!!! Squeaks, barks, cheeps! You name it, he does it
Often makes them when really happy, startled, real angry, and sometimes when sleeping
He has a passion for parkour! (his quirk makes it fairly easy to do) Especially when it comes to jumping from rooftop to rooftop (listen, I know it's not ,entioned in any of the source material but just let me have this)
You can BET that Shu has an early morning exercise routine (how else is he gonna keep up that form)
Speaking of form, he's THICC. His arms are thicc, his thighs are s t r o n k, and let's not forget that fine booty
I don't care what the others say!! HE CAN COOK!! (Not anything too complicated, but he can get by)
Dabi likes to give him nicknames (like spin cycle or figit spinner)
He's gay. Or at least bi (come on we've all seen the way he is around Shigaraki you know he's not straight)
Him and Shig bond over videos games and like to see who can speed run Dark Souls the fastest (the current winner is Spinner but only by 20 minutes)
He is a fan of anything car related. Has probably watched all the fast and furious movies at least twice
Likes collecting knives
Him and Toga will kill for dark chocolate
Compulsively polishes his swords when stressed
Sees Magne as an older sister or aunt
He may not know how to drive well, but he is pretty knowledgeable about fixing vehicles
All in all, Spinner is very underrated and I would die for him
I might write more about the Spinner and his siblings they're ocs but let me thrive blease (maybe make art???) But for now, I'll leave you with this list.
EDIT: The second part to this list is here

Old Friends
pairing: Jung Hoseok x reader genre: fluff, comedy, slight drama high school crush au and there’s a Hoseok vs y/n rap battle in there, somewhere word count: 6k warnings: just some passionate kissing, oh and shirtless Hoseok;)
Description: Hoseok is your high school friend that you had a different kind of relationship with. You run into him, after many years and rekindle your friendship. Then he takes you to your high school reunion and claims you as his girlfriend. But it’s only an act. Right?
A/N: EGO IS OUT!! I can’t get enough of it, or enough of J-hope. Hence, this oneshot. I gave this my all and had fun reading it back so I’m hoping it’s not shitty. Pls let me know what you think of it. Also I changed the way I write and reffered to the reader as ‘you’ for this one- idk i wanted to try it. If you guys have prefferences you can let me know. I hope you like it. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
It's official, you hate summer. Sure.. school's out, no more chasing after professors or migraines lasting for weeks. But goddamn it it's hot and humid. It's like trying to breathe in a sauna, which you hate. Plus, the sun is like a deadly laser. Normally you love strolling through this street. Glancing at cute little stores and admiring street artists as you walk by. Not today, though. Not while feeling like all the water in your body is gonna evaporate any second.
You notice a little crowd up ahead, a half circle. And the sound of a groovy beat captures your attention. You might've stopped and joined the crowd just for the captivating music, if it wasn't for the torturous heat. In this instance you'll settle for only a glance at whatever show is going on inside that half circle.
That's until you see the street dancer there and you stop dead in your tracks. Someone is crazy enough to dance in this heat. Someone manages to look like the greatest performer alive despite the sweat covering his body and the fact that he's probably about to pass out. That someone is Jung Hoseok.
Before you can do anything else, you realize just how much better he’s become. And he was already an amazing dancer the last time you saw him. Back in high school, that is. Hobi the bubbly, cheerful dancer that dominated talent shows every year. Hobi who you occasionally helped pass chemistry. Hobi who could actually also sing, a fact only you knew about him of all the kids at your school. Because you’d spend most of your time in the music room, usually all by yourself. But one time, you caught him sitting alone and singing in there and after that, he’d visit you every so often. In return, he was the only one that knew you composed songs.
It’s been three years since graduation and your last conversation with him. But right now, he’s standing right in front of you. No, he’s dancing. The music ends in time with his final move and the mini crowd goes wild. As he catches his breath, most people leave money in his hat on the floor. You hope they’re being generous. Rightfully so, that was one hell of a performance.
You contemplate on whether you should say hi or not. The introvert in you decides you shouldn’t but before you can turn around to leave, you make eye contact with Hoseok.
“Y/N?” he asks.
“Hey, Hoseok.”
And he smiles. Despite how exhausted he must be, he gives you a whole cheekbones lifted, classic Hobi smile.
“You were amazing. But how did you not faint dancing in a weather like this?” you ask, smiling back.
“Come to think of it, I do feel like blacking out.” he says in between his panting.
You panic and go closer to him quickly. “I can take you to the hospital-”
“I’m kidding, Y/N.”
Did you maybe miss his mischevous ass? You both giggle.
“How about taking me to an icecream shop to catch up, instead? It’s been so freaking long. If you don’t have any plans, I mean.”
Your plan is going home, opening the refrigerator door and standing in front of it. So they’re skippable for an old friend.
“Let’s go before you deteriorate.”
You take him to the closest icecream shop you know and the shop has great air conditioning, thank god. Hoseok sits down and you feel as though he won’t be able to get up and order. Despite the smiley and bright facade of his, his body seems to be worn out. So, you take the liberty to order for both of you.
As you wait in line, order and wait for them to prepare it, you think about what you wanna say to Hoseok. Regardless of how much time has passed, you notice how you still get a little nervous with him around. It used to be like that in high school, too. You could never really look him in the eyes while he was speaking with you. You wouldn’t be intimidated. You’d just be kinda.. overwhelmed.
You take the cups and make your way to the table. Hoseok’s eyes light up, he seems content with your choice. He also looks better now, the cool air of the shop must’ve helped.
“What’re the odds of us meeting like this? Just on the street?” he initiates conversation.
“Well, I’m not exactly surprised to find Hope on the streets.”
“You remember my stage name?” He looks geniunely surprised.
“How can I possibly forget crowds of people going crazy, cheering J-hooope?”
That makes him shy, you think. With him averting his eyes to the ground. You’d hear those cheers often, back then. Hoseok was known as ‘J-hope’ and his act ‘Hope on the street’ was very popular. Everyone in Gwangju High would come to watch him perform, including you. It really is a bit strange how you ran into each other randomly on a street in Seoul, you think. You both had dreams of moving to Seoul as teenagers and had told each other about it. But neither of you knew if the other actually made it there. Until now.
"Did you move here right after graduation? I remember you talking about wanting to persue music here at University of Seoul." he says with his eyes on his icecream. He remembers your dream.
"Yeah, I had to get out of there. I moved here even before knowing if the university had accepted me. Thankfully, I got in. What about you? When did you come here?"
After he takes a spoon of the good stuff, he takes his eyes off from his cup and connects them with yours. It happens so suddenly that you almost blush. You're able to hold it in, though. Barely.
"I kinda wanted to wait until my work at the dance academy was done. So, after two more years at Gwangju, I finally transferred here, to National University of Arts just at the beginning of this semester."
You're glad to see him not giving up on dancing because he's so talented for it that it isn't like anything you've seen before or after you've known him. When he dances, it's like whatever music he's moving to actually finds form in him. And when he's not dancing, the way he moves around, walks, talks still somehow appears artistic.
But then, you realize you've been staring at him, lost in your train of thoughts. And he must've noticed because one corner of his mouth curves upwards a little, forming an almost smirk. This time, you can't stop your cheeks from turning red. Fuck.. What's wrong with you? It's been years since you've even seen his face. Why the hell did you just turn into a teenager, all over again?
"How's music school? Did you drop any albums I'm missing out on?" He asks and his eyes go back to his icecream. You can breathe normally again.
"I think school is always a pain in the ass. Even if it's about music." is your reply. You both laugh.
"I couldn't agree more."
Normally you have a hard time talking about yourself with others. But when it comes to Hoseok, it's different. Because that kinda used to be your relationship back in the days. Talking to each other about stuff you wouldn't with others.
"I've been working in a studio a friend of mine opened and we're working on some stuff but.. I can't seem to finish anything I start so, no. I haven't really been productive." you add with a frown. There're lots of things you don't like about yourself and being a procrastinator is one of them.
Then, a hand is placed lightly on yours that was resting on the table. It's Hoseok, holding your hand and looking at you warmly. "Nah, I'm still pretty sure we're gonna hear your stuff on the radio, soon." He looks like he geniunely believes that. All you can do is smile back in appreciation.
Time goes by as you talk about all kinds of stuff. You learn he lives at the student dorm but he's not exactly happy about it and wants to find a new place to stay. Also that he's giving dance lessons to earn some extra cash. You tell him about Yoongi, that friend of yours who owns a studio and how he's looking for someone to move in, after his flatmate moved away. You promise to have the two meet each other and see if they can become roomates.
Hoseok suggests to exchange numbers but it turns out both of you haven't changed them since high school, so you both have the other in your contacts. And you say goodbye shortly after, agreeing on hanging out again, soon.
By the time you get home, it's already evening and you're a little hesitant to open up the door and greet your roommate, Namjoon. Because you promised him that you'd watch that philosophical movie you can't remember the name of together. But you were supposed to do that about two hours ago. You decide to just go in and explain how you ran into an old friend and got held up. Namjoon'll understand, right? You go inside but see that nobody's home, so you call him.
"What's up ditcher?" is how he answers the phone and you can't blame him, really.
"I'm so sorry Joon. I wanna make it up to you but.. where are you, exactly?"
"Yoongi's."
"Okay, don't move." You hang up the phone and go straight into the apartment across the hall from yours. Yoongi has already opened the door before you can knock. You make for the living room and spot your roommate there. Just as you're about to explain, you also spot credits rolling on the tv screen and finished popcorn bowls.
"Wow, you watched Waking Day without me?" you complain. And Namjoon is quick to respond.
"It's Waking Life and yes, since you were a no-show."
"But you didn't even leave me popcorn."
"What're you saying? There's some left right here." Yoongi is the one who hands you one of the bowls.
"There are literally only three kernels here."
"Well, that's what ditchers get." Yoongi is just as merciless as Namjoon.
"But what if something happened to me on my way back-" you try the approach of pulling on their heartstrings but both of them whip their necks back and look at you in extreme worry, so you decide not to mess around. "Okay, okay. I encountered an old friend and lost track of time catching up. But maybe we can watch another movie and I'll make the popcorn, huh?" You wear a guilty grin on your face.
"Nope. You should take a seat and tell me about this friend that made you ditch me."
You sit down in between the guys on the couch, but you're facing Namjoon and telling him about Hoseok. Yoongi only sees your back and he's just so done with you, as always.
"You guys have a house exactly symmetrical to mine across the hall. Why the hell are you always here? I know it's not to see me, you're not even looking at me." It's a mix between ranting and whining. Both you and Namjoon know he's doing it to get attention.
"Because your couch is comfier." says Namjoon.
"And you have a piano." you add.
"You have a keyboard!"
"My keyboard is no upright piano."
Yoongi gives up with a huff. But you attack him with tickles until he gives in and giggles, all the while trying to get rid of your hands.
"By the way Yoongs, you're still looking for a roommate, right?"
"Yeah, why?"
"The friend of mine from Gwangju I was catching up with, Hoseok, is looking for a new place. I want to introduce you guys."
"Sure. What can you tell me about him?"
You pause because there're lots of things you can say about him. But those are all about the high school Hoseok. You wonder how many of them changed and how many stayed the same. You're sure of some things, though.
"I can tell you that he's a great guy and a dedicated artist, a dancer. Also he's funny and a mood maker."
"Alright. You should bring him over."
"Great! I will."
Tumblr media
You wake up to your phone buzzing repeatedly. First thing you do is check the time and your clock on the wall is striking 11:30 in the morning. You overslept, great. It makes sense after you convinced Namjoon to binge watch Death Note before going to bed. But you ended up sleeping on the couch. The fact that you're in your bed right now means Namjoon carried you there.
3 unread messages from Hoseok.
-Morning, Y/N.
-Are you free today?
-I wanna treat you to some coffee.
It's been three to four days since the time you ran into Hoseok and you've been meaning to reach out to him to hang out but he just beat you to it. You thank the god for his extrovertedness.
-I'm taking care of some stuff in the studio today.
-But you can visit me there and if I'm finished quickly we can even hang out later, too.
-If you'd like, of course.
You press send and for some stupid reason your heart races a little fast. Were you being too forward? He just said coffee, maybe he meant a quick get together. You just asked him to wait for you in a studio, possibly for a couple of hours.
Two more buzzing.
-Sure! I'll make sure to help out so you can finish faster.
-Text me the time and the adress when you can.
You sigh in relief. But now it's time to be nervous about how you'll be alone with him there for a long while. Not that it makes you uncomfortable. You just feel that overwhelming feeling of him being around returning. You hope to at least not act like an idiot.
You make your way to the studio and text Hoseok the location, saying he could drop by whenever he'd like. Yoongi told you to listen to some demos for him but you leave that for last. For now, you're setting up some instruments and tuning them up for the band arranged to record tomorrow. But the bell rings and you sprint to answer the door.
"Hi!" you greet him.
"Hey." Hoseok says with a bright smile. He holds up the bags in his hands. "I brought food and icelattes."
"Which makes you a hero. Come in."
You eat and drink your coffees as you talk about stuff. Then, you play a recording of a guy who did an awful cover of Smelly Cat a few days ago. It makes Hoseok laugh so hard that he tumbles out of his seat and falls towards you. You knew it was a habit of his but you had never been the person he falls over to, before.
He helps you get the rest of the things done after that and surely him giving you a hand speeds up the process. For the last thing, you call him over to listen to the demos.
"Wow, some of these are really good. Especially this one, I like the beat a lot."
"Yeap, me too. I'm showing this one to Yoongi, later."
Finished up with the things, you're getting ready to leave but you hear him beatboxing the beat he liked a while ago.
"You can beatbox?"
"Yeah, I picked it up not so long ago."
An idea pops into your mind. You take him by the arm, practically drag him back to the recording booth and hand him a mic.
"Get a beat going."
"Wha-"
"Just do it." And you run back to record him doing it. After that, you throw in some other instruments quickly. When you play the outcome, he smiles so hard.
"How did you just do that in such a short time, coming up with practically a song."
"You did it, too. You came up with a beat off the top of your head. That's the basis of songs, mostly."
He listens to it over and over. "Hey can I use this for when I do freestyle battles?"
"To dance over to? Sure! I'll work on it some more, though and perfect it."
He shys away a little. "Well, this would make a great dance track but.. I meant freestyle rap battles."
"You rap, too? Geez, is there any street art you're not talented in?" You're not that surprised, though. He always stroke you as swag in living form.
"I'm trying to get into it. I should improve if I wanna make a name for myself out on the streets of Seoul." he says half jokingly but it's true that the rap scene has become a major part of street competition, recently. You know from Yoongi and Namjoon who are also rappers.
You play the beat from the top. "C'mon, then. Let me hear a snippet."
"No, no I'm not really-"
"C'mon~ let's battle." you say to get him worked up a bit. Also, you picked up a few things from Yoongi and Namjoon over the last couple of years.
"Oh battle? Okay then, why don't you go first?"
Both of you try to control your laughter and you come up with some very stupid and childlike rhymes that make Hoseok laugh even harder.
"It's your turn, J-hope."
"Ooo~" he gets more fired up with the mention of his stage name. You're going back and forth rapping about the most random and funny stuff. But then you get bolder and want to go at him a bit, to get him more serious about this. Trying to remember embarrassing things he's done in high school, you throw in lines about the time he had to dance in his underpants in front of the whole school after losing a bet.
Also, there's this face you pull whenever you try to diss someone, something you picked up from Yoongi. But it looks funny on you and the boys always make fun of you about it. You're sure you're doing it right now, too out of habit. And you're not wrong because as soon as you're done, Hoseok starts and he mentions it.
Except, he says something along the lines of despite of you having that expression, he still doesn't feel like you're dissing him because of how beautiful you look even while pulling a funny face.
What? Did he just call you beautiful? In a rap battle?
You're in shock and aren't able to speak for a while. Which Hoseok takes advantage of. "You failed to come up with something in time, Y/N. I win." Then he boops your nose. He fucking boops your nose. What did you get yourself into?
Tumblr media
It's the day you finally bring Hoseok to meet with Yoongi. It's been a couple of weeks since you guys started hanging out kinda on a regular basis and Yoongi finally had some free time. The three of you are sitting in Yoongi's living room and you're watcing them get to know each other. Everything seems to go well. The door opens and Namjoon walks in.
"Yo. Sorry I'm late."
"It's okay since you live far away. Oh wait, you live across the hall." Yoongi is quick to welcome him.
"At least I brought dessert."
The two boys go into the kitchen to get dessert ready to be served.
"That's my roomate Namjoon. He wanted to meet you, too." you inform Hoseok.
"Roommate? Wait- you live just next door?"
"Yeah."
"Why didn't you tell me sooner? I'd beg to Yoongi or something to get him to accept me!" he says with a smile. You're glad he's happy about the fact you might live next to each other.
"I think he already likes you. I'm pretty sure you got the room."
And you turn out to be right. Hoseok and Yoongi hit it off quickly and he moves in a couple of days later. You start spending even more time together since then. Both with the other boys around and just you two, alone.
This one time Yoongi gives you the day off, Namjoon is off to do a job interview and you've got absolutely nothing to do. So you go over to see Hoseok. You knock and ring the bell but loud music is coming from inside and he doesn't hear you. The door isn't locked, though and you just go in. When you get to the living room you see Hoseok practising, going really hard at it. There're sweatdrops on his face and his white shirt-now practically see through shirt-is stuck to his body, revealing the delicate structure of it.
Blood rushes to your cheeks and your heart is thumping but you can't look away. He's art, you think. Art that you can't get enough of. He finally notices you, which almost gives you a heart attack but thankfully he isn't uncomfortable with you being there.
"Hey- uh- phew." he tries to talk but needs a moment to catch his breath, first. "Y/N. Please tell me you've been standing there long enough that you saw my new moves."
You nod, still not completely out of your daze. "They were.." you trail off because he just casually takes his shirt off in front of you. "Can you pass me that?" he asks you to hand him over the towel on the chair next to you. You're on autopilot as you do so.
"So, what do you think?"
"Oh yeah- Umm.. it was awesome. Very captivating.."
"Thanks." he smiles brightly while walking closer to you. "I'm gonna take a quick shower. You wanna hang out, after?"
Right. That's why you came over, you remember. "Yeah, I'll be here."
Hoseok and you just hang inside all day. Not doing much but still managing to have fun. Yoongi comes home for a while but has to go back out again, so it's mostly just you two. In the middle of the night, you guys start watching a movie, planning to stay awake till morning but Hoseok's tired from practising earlier and dozes off, eventually. And you're famous for sleeping in front of the tv, so you quickly follow. Then, you two somehow get in a cuddly position in your sleep.
The next morning- or more like afternoon, you wake up to Yoongi slurping his coffee, seated right across from you. Hoseok's nowhere to be seen.
"Hey Yoongs, why am I still here?"
"Well, you obviously fell asleep in front of the tv again and Namjoon's strong arms weren't here to carry you to bed."
"Where is he?"
"Joon said he was staying at a friend last night, not wanting to get all soaked up in the rain. And Hobi woke up just moments ago and went out, saying he has to get ready for a gig."
You nod at him and get up. You're about to go back to your place to wash up but realize something suddenly.
"Since when do you call him Hobi?"
"Since when do you have a crush on him?"
Your eyes go wide with panic. "Wha- No way what're you say-"
"Do you think I'm blind? I can perfectly see it when two people are cuddling on my couch."
"We just fell asleep that's all-"
"I saw you two over at the piano, too. And in the kitchen a few days ago doing the dishes. And while dancing here in the living room for no reason. You can't look him in the eyes without going red and he can't take his eyes off of you."
There isn't much you can say to convince him otherwise because you realize that he's right. At first when you guys started hanging out again, you thought you felt butterflies because you kinda had a thing for him in high school. You paid it no mind thinking it'd fade away with time but it didn't. Your feelings only grew stronger and now you know it was visible to others.
What has you tensed up, however is the way Yoongi talks about the situation like it's both-sided. That's where you can't be sure. Because yes, Hoseok randomly calls you beautiful, takes you out for meals and spends entire days with you. But you don't know if he likes you like that or if he's just being friendly. Just like back in high school.
"Okay, yeah. He makes me feel a certain way. But there's nothing going on, we haven't even talked about it. I don't think he's into me like that."
Yoongi's brows furrow in confusion. "He was just asking me if anything was going on between you and Joon the other day, though."
He asked what?
"What?"
"Dude, he was obviously jealous and suspicious of the fact that you were roommates. And very close ones."
You did have a very close bond with Namjoon, just as you did with Yoongi. Yoongi's just involved less skinship and more serious talk. But Namjoon was the first person who friended you in Seoul and over the years he became your self proclaimed guardian angel. That was all.
"You didn't correct him?!"
"I tried but he seemed overwhelmed with confusion, I'm not sure if he fully believed me. Or fully listened? I dunno- I was kinda enjoying his little emotional crisis."
"Yoongs!"
"Fine! So yeah, maybe you should to talk to him."
How do you talk to someone about this? you wonder. And can Yoongi really be right about the possibility of him reciprocating your feelings?
Tumblr media
You're reading a book on your couch. It's been a couple of days since your cuddly interaction with Hoseok and you haven't really hung out after that, either. You're not avoiding him, though. More like testing the waters. Namjoon's little squeal and sprint to the living room gets you out of your thoughts.
"Y/N! Oh my god!"
"Joonie what happened?"
"I got in." His smile is from ear to ear but you're not surprised he got the job he was going after for a while now. He happens to be intelligent beyond your understanding. But also a goofball. Because he -who usually treats books like his children- throws the one you were reading away and gets you up on his back. Now you're both singing victory songs as he gives you a piggy back ride.
Just then, Hoseok makes an entrance to your apartment, sees you two and his face visibly drops.
"Oh- sorry guys. I should've knocked-"
"Dude, it's okay. Think about our two apartments as one big house. You don't have to worry about knocking everytime. Come in!" Namjoon is being his friendly self as he puts you down. "I gotta go call my parents. Thanks for always believing in me, Y/N." He places a soft peck on the top of your head and goes back to his room. Uh-oh. You hope Hoseok doesn't misunderstand.
"How are you doing, Hobi?"
"I'm-" he hesitates for a while. "I didn't know you and Namjoon were.. are you? Y'know like together?"
"No!" you regret yelling but it just comes out before you can stop. "I mean, it's not like that. We're friends. In fact he kinda decleared himself my older brother."
The total grimace that had took over Hoseok's face starts to slowly dissappear. "Oh, okay. I'm sorry for making you uncomfortable like that-"
"No, no. Let's just change the subject." You want to move on from this before it gets awkward.
"Okay. Oh right! I came over to show you something."
He holds out his phone for you to see. It's an invite to an event. Gwangju High's high school reunion, to be exact. You also got one, too but immediately deleted.
"The reunion? You're going?" you ask.
"We should go."
You're about to protest but he cuts in.
"I know most of our year were jerks. But it's Gwangju. I know you miss it there. And high school wasn't all evil."
"It was the people who were evil, Hobi."
"That's why we have to show them their evil ways weren't enough to break us down."
"What do you mean, we? Everyone loved you!"
"The jocks hated me for being popular despite not playing football."
That was true. They sometimes gave him a hard time for grabbing the attention of girls more than them.
"Besides, we're grown ups. If they weren't able to mature, that's their problem. We'll just breathe in some hometown air and have fun."
You did miss home. And the fact Hoseok'll be with you eases your stress so you say yes.
Tumblr media
Hoseok and you roam the streets of Gwangju, firstly. You tell him the places you missed most and you visit those. When the reunion evening closes in, both of you go to your homes to get ready. Your parents are sort of shocked you're attending the event but they won't complain because they missed you a lot and you haven't realized how much you missed them back till you finally came back after a long while.
Hoseok comes to pick you up and oh boy. He immediately recongnizes the dress you're wearing as the exact one you wore to prom. The light blue piece fits your body even more perfectly now, he thinks.
"This is your prom dress." It's not a question because he's certain.
You panic because well you wore it thinking nobody would remember since not a lot of people were paying attention to you during prom and you didn't have anything else decent enough in your old closet. How the hell does he remember?
"It looks even more beautiful." And with that, your panic is no more.
You get to the school finally and almost everyone is there. All trying very hard to look fancy, so Hoseok and you make fun of some of them before entering.
"It's J-hope!", "Hope's back!" and "Who is that with Hoseok?" are the comments you hear as you walk by. A few speeches are given, while you stuff your face with cupcakes. Then music's on and people start dancing.
Hoseok is approached by many and he kindly converses with them all. He forces you to speak from time to time, too. One of the boys who you used to tutor a lot, Hansung, tries to make a couple of moves on you. Probably under the influence of alcohol. You politely dismiss him but some other guys that came alone also are eyeing you from different places of the room. Hoseok is well aware and not okay with it, at all.
He slides a hand down your arm and links your fingers. When you turn to him in surprise, he pulls you closer. "Let's act like a couple."
"What-"
"I'm sick of people trying to see if you're available for them, aren't you?"
It is a bit disturbing. You bet most of them didn't even recognize you and are just looking for a prey for the night. "I am." you reply.
"Then just go with it."
So you do that but this time the girls start to get uncomfortable since most of them were eyeing Hoseok. And like clockwork, Gaeun appears with her gang of plastic girls. Gaeun used to be Hoseok's biggest fan. But all she actually wanted was to get into his pants just cause of how popular he was. Knowing this, you tense up. Her eyes hold such a suggestive look that you almost want to protect Hoseok from her.
As far as you know Hoseok has never indulged her like that back in school days. And he doesn't seem to be effected by the way she looks right now, either which can be described in two words: model legs.
"Hobi~" her irritating voice muses. "There're lots of girls wanting to dance with you tonight."
He takes his hand away from yours to claimingly grab you waist. "Sorry, ladies. My dances are all booked by this one, right here." He turns his head and places a kiss on your temple.
"I'm sure your date for the night won't mind if-"
"She's not just my date for the night. Y/N is my girlfriend." he cuts her off. Shock is evident not only on their faces but yours as well. The girls have to walk away awkwardly but what they think they're speaking among themselves is quite audible to you.
"There's no way. Y/N could never be enough for him. Just wait until the end of the night and see how he gets bored."
Hoseok didn't hear them. But you and some other people did. And you don't care what Gaeun says but her words get around fast and people are looking at you even more weirdly than before. Hoseok realizes your body tensing up.
"What's the matter?"
"I don't think people are buying that we're together. Especially after Gaeun started speaking to them."
He looks around to find that people really were looking at you suspiciously.
"Let's make it more believable, then."
He pulls you to the dancefloor and starts moving you to the rhythm. You've danced with him before but they were all silly ones, meant for fun. This one was serious. And your bodies were seriously close. But you just let him lead you, knowing that he knows what he's doing. After a while he figures that the music's ending so he twirls you around and finishes with a sudden dip.
You're back is resting againt his hand as you're leant back and Hoseok's face is so very close to yours. Some people clap and some don't but neither of you really care about the people watching anymore. Then he kisses you. He downright kisses you at the center of the dancefloor. It's passionate but gentle. He doesn't let go for a while but you've no clue how long it's been cause you're lost in the taste of him. Which is a thousand times sharper than the whiskey and a thousand times sweeter than the cupcakes.
He pulls you back up, finally parting your lips. "I think we got about enough attention. Wanna get out of here? We can go to the music room." he suggests. All you can do is nod cause you still can't form words.
You get there and it's the only place in this school that you've missed. You sit down on the piano seat and Hoseok pulls a chair next to you, it's like deja vu.
"You know the song you used to play, the one I liked a lot. River-"
"River flows in you." of course you remember.
"Yeah. I kinda tried learning that on the piano a while back."
"Show me."
He tries to play it and messes up some bits so you help him out. Then, your hands touch accidentally and you both freeze.
"Y/N-"
"Hoseok-"
You both try to speak at the same time and cut each other off, so you laugh. Hoseok goes for it again.
"Y/N. I wanted to ask you out so many times right here, as you'd play songs to me. Did you know that?"
You most certainly did not.
"I wanted to ask you to a dance at the prom, so bad. But you left before I could muster up the courage."
He turns to face you completely.
"I couldn't believe it when I found you again, like that. Everything I felt came back to me as we spent more and more time with each other. And when I got that invite.. I thought- Maybe I've been given a second chance, to do it right this time."
Your heart is racing so fast that you can hear it. Every word he said are things that you've been thinking. So you have to do it properly this time, too.
"So.. so, will you go out with-"
You crash your lips with his immediately and he responds in a flash. This time the kiss is much more deep and demanding. His hands travel down to your waist as you get up from your seat and move to his lap. He hums into your mouth and you try to take in every bit of the vibration from it before both of you pull apart, out of breath.
But he still looks at you with questioning eyes, as if you haven't just given him an answer clear as day. But he looks so cute that you entertain him.
"Yes, high school crush. I will go out with you."
He can finally smile again. Though, it turns into a smirk a while later.
"But will you go out with me?" you joke around, still sitting on his lap.
"I will go out with you so bad that it'll swipe you right off your feet."
As if he already doesn't..
....
A/N: Wowzers, my first Hoseok fic is finished.. I know this was long and thanks sooo much if you bared with me and read it. It would mean a great deal to me to know what you thought of this so, I’d love to have your feedback. Thanks again for reading and have a lobely daayyy :)

Amelia: 😂 Jac: I've met THE perfect girl for you, oh my GOD Amelia: because I'm going to travel to Edinburgh for 🦪 after dodging a 3 hour commute Jac: She's American, you could convince her Cork has a lot to offer beside 🦪 Jac: but actually, she is UNBEARABLE, and I'm trying very hard to be nice and give everyone a chance rn Jac: she does Art History, despite the fact she seems to know less about art than I do Jac: doesn't stop her 🔊 Amelia: 💔 you put your mean girl years behind you too soon, I'm SO proud though Amelia: and I'm sure Savannah appreciates it just as much Jac: 😏 I can feel the sincerity Jac: I know though, talk about completely crazy Amelia: if you want sincerity I can totally believe she'd follow you there as if nothing happened Amelia: are you okay? Jac: I think the prestige probably beat the off-chance I'd also be there but I appreciate the belief Jac: Yeah, actually, I am Jac: it went well, better than I could've or would've imagined before Amelia: alright, that's a relief Amelia: not that it's been playing on my mind or anything since the ✨ livened up my feed Jac: I would've got in touch sooner Jac: It did cross my mind, that you'd see Jac: I also didn't wanna encroach on your freshers' experience at all, that idea won out Jac: It must've been a shock for you and all Amelia: I get it, because likewise obviously Amelia: plus you seemed like you were coping, and it's not the same as before, you have people to go to now if you aren't so Amelia: I don't know, it seemed too dramatic to come at you all !!!!!! Amelia: which is why I didn't Jac: I wouldn't have bitten your head off Jac: but I see and appreciate that logic Jac: not to mention previous experience would say I actually would so Jac: She's changed a lot too, in those 2 years Amelia: good Jac: Yeah, turns out she had a pretty rough time of it too Jac: which, obviously, but I wasn't really in a space to think too much about that back then Amelia: was likely to be more 🥀 than 🌹 living with her dad, and everything that happened with her mum Amelia: I'm not surprised even if I couldn't be very sympathetic then Jac: I can't believe I was zoned out Jac: I didn't even know about her mum Amelia: you had loads of your own shit going on, it'd be more unbelievable if you were tuned into hers Amelia: I didn't know how bad it was, or didn't want to hear it, whichever Jac: Jess made it sound like the world and his wife knew Jac: I feel awful Jac: but her mum is doing better now, and they're trying to mend their relationship, so, that's positive Amelia: it always feels like that in my 🏠 but I would've told you if I'd realised Jac: It isn't your fault remotely Jac: like you said, sympathy about it wasn't at the forefront of your mind Jac: and you can't be blamed there Amelia: I'm genuinely glad things are getting better, the last thing she needs is to feel like shit for leaving her mum again if they aren't Jac: I know you are, you aren't a monster Jac: even if you and Savannah had your differences, and the obvious situation from there 'til now Amelia: that's enough sincerity though, the last thing I need is Savannah Moore trying to be my friend again Amelia: you can keep her Jac: 😂 Alright Jac: about that though Jac: things have changed, between us too Amelia: okay Amelia: what does that mean? Jac: Well, I told her, this time Jac: that I'm not straight Jac: and neither is she Amelia: she really has fucking changed Jac: She hasn't also come out, there's no label on it or anything Jac: but she likes me back Jac: you deserve to know, and would, regardless of where we were in our relationship Jac: I'm sorry if it's not what you want to hear though Amelia: thanks, I guess Amelia: for not waiting for the 💍 announcement Jac: Things haven't moved quite that fast Jac: although, yeah Jac: I know Amelia: It's still Savannah, I doubt she's had a TOTAL personality transplant Amelia: you probably wouldn't like her if she had Amelia: so I'll keep an eye out for that post and put my congrats on it Jac: No, she's still her Jac: and I doubt her plans include a 💍 that could be bought on a student budget Amelia: true Amelia: I'll send some 💐 she'd NEVER put in the 🗑 Amelia: just the 💌 I'll actually bother to write, you know, like a normal person Jac: There goes the mystery Amelia: because of course you wouldn't recognise my handwriting Jac: I've checked your homework over enough times Jac: I doubt anyone else is rushing to send us a bouquet so Jac: process of elimination Amelia: there you go then Jac: but I have told my brother and that Jac: on the off-chance you catch him and he's dying not to bring it up Amelia: bit rude of him not to try and gently break the news Jac: Assumedly either thinking I've imagined the whole thing all over, or it'll all fizzle out before there's any need to go there Amelia: or I'm thriving so hard there's no need to bring me down 1 week in Jac: Obviously that too Jac: but you know that wasn't my intention, yeah Amelia: it's obvious you're not thinking about me, don't worry Jac: Okay Jac: do you want me to leave you now? Amelia: Why would I want that? Jac: Plenty of valid reasons Jac: to process, to not, you just don't feel like talking to me at this precise moment Amelia: what's to process? the bit about her not queerbaiting you the entire time is new, the rest isn't Jac: That's not nothing Jac: it changes the whole thing Amelia: not for me Jac: Alright then Amelia: you were hung up on her every second, what's changed for you is that was a least a bit mutual Amelia: I don't need to process any of that, it doesn't involve me Jac: It's still new information, that's all Amelia: not really Amelia: I probably should have guessed anyway Jac: If I didn't, I don't see how you could've Jac: she didn't even then so Amelia: too late to become a 🔮💎💫 gay, I hear you Jac: 🕵 is definitely a better idea Amelia: maybe I'd just really love to be able to say 'it's just a phase, mum' about something Jac: You've had plenty Amelia: name one Jac: [that boy band I said they liked lol] Jac: for starters Amelia: that wasn't a phase that was me lying that I cared Jac: yeah, okay Jac: you knew all the lyrics 'cos you cover was so deep Jac: no need to lie, they had some tunes Amelia: I knew all the lyrics because there was about 5 lines repeated over and over Jac: uh-huh Jac: you had badges all over your school bag Amelia: because you've never fully committed to a lie, oh wait Jac: There's no need to be a bitch Amelia: 😂 Jac: No, I'm not super ready to laugh about that time in my life, as it goes Amelia: okay Jac: I'm going to leave you to it now Jac: Good luck with your first proper day, hope it all goes well Amelia: actually wait though Amelia: I didn't mean that Amelia: I'm sorry Jac: Alright Jac: I know you're upset, or pissed off Jac: but being a better person doesn't extend to being a punching bag for you to get that out Jac: you can feel it, obviously, but that's just unproductive for you, and not gonna happen from my end Amelia: I know Jac: and I know that's what I did to you Jac: so it probably seems fair, or justified at least, that you get to now Jac: but it wasn't right, and an eye for an eye, you know Amelia: no, it's not fair, I wasn't being, that's why I'm sorry Jac: You don't need to stoop to my lowest Amelia: I'm trying, okay Jac: Yeah Jac: and I accept your apology Amelia: thanks Jac: should I not have told you? Amelia: I think that'd be worse Jac: I thought the same Jac: unless you were going to block me on the sly, then you would have seen Amelia: maybe I should now, I don't know Jac: If you want to Jac: to take some time Jac: or more permanently Jac: it's up to you Jac: obviously my offer of being friends still stands but I understand Jac: as I said, this changes things Amelia: yeah, if we let it Jac: You can't help how this makes you feel Amelia: but why should I let her take everything again? Jac: Savannah isn't actively doing that Jac: but if you want to keep trying, so do I Amelia: we worked hard at getting here, me and you, that's not about her Jac: True Jac: You don't have to be friends with her now, that's not it Jac: just accept that she's my girlfriend, and a big part of my life Amelia: does she know? Jac: About what happened between us? Jac: No Jac: she doesn't know a huge amount about those two years, for me Jac: I plan to tell her everything Jac: but it's a lot to throw at her in a sitting, especially unasked, you know Amelia: it'd really fuck with her freshers, for sure Jac: Right Jac: all for having the hard but necessary conversations Jac: but there's a time and a place Jac: I don't want her to feel like I'm trying to make her feel bad for me, either Jac: like 'look what YOU did' because nah Amelia: too 🥀🥀🥀 Amelia: it can wait, neither of you are going anywhere Jac: That's my logic Amelia: she'll get why you waited Jac: I hope so Amelia: come on, it'll be harder for you to say than it'll be for her to hear, she's a LOT of things, but she won't want you to go through that before you're ready to Jac: You're right Jac: it just feels like secrets, and that feels like 10 steps back Jac: but it isn't that Amelia: I'm sure even she hasn't had time to tell you everything, she'd need to be chatting non stop Jac: True Jac: if you're ever done talking about yourself and your life, that's gotta be a sign you need to get out more, right Jac: there's always more to say Amelia: right Amelia: stop being so virgo-ish about it and give yourself a break Jac: 😂 okay Jac: I just need lectures to actually start Jac: so I can freak out on that instead Amelia: same Jac: are you more 😁 or 😱 Amelia: 😕 Amelia: over 😣 Jac: You'll be fine Jac: let me know how it goes though Jac: I'm interested Amelia: okay 🤓 Jac: Well there's a lot of overlap Jac: obviously, you can usually do them as a double discipline but I wanted to go pure Psych Jac: doesn't mean I'm not 🤔 Amelia: yeah Jac: 🤏🤓 fine Amelia: we're not strangers Jac: I remember Jac: so, what are your new mates like then? Amelia: great, obviously Jac: It's a good thing you aren't taking English Jac: that description leaves a lot to be desired Amelia: what do you want me to say? Jac: Isn't there anyone in particular? Amelia: there's a whole course full of people Jac: Yeah, I like one of my profs, he's really cool Jac: but I don't know anyone on my course that well yet either, they all seem nice enough though Amelia: of course you do Jac: it's so refreshing in comparison to the teachers at our school Jac: even if he acted like a base level human, it'd be a step up Jac: but he knows his stuff, and he's down to help me get ahead, what more could I want Amelia: literally nothing Jac: But I'm still not into dudes so I won't commit that cliche, don't worry Amelia: a real weight off my mind Jac: sure Amelia: 😏 Jac: I've already done loads of prep Jac: can basically chill in his class this whole term Amelia: you can but you won't Amelia: 🤓🏆⭐ Jac: we're not strangers Amelia: maybe we are 🤏 because reading's the only prep we were given but I've already done it Jac: Not really Jac: you just pretended you weren't 🤓 Amelia: no, I just actually wasn't 🤓 about school Jac: plenty of other things Jac: you can't hide the 🤓 Amelia: it's not 😳 I literally can Jac: not from me Amelia: that'd be 10 steps back Jac: try 10000 Amelia: no thank you, that sounds exhausting Jac: you've got a 🛏 Amelia: yeah, I don't know who's more thrilled, me or my dad Amelia: getting to pretend he's allergic to pets for another year at least Jac: result Jac: won't have to fake seduce him on your behalf either Jac: I'm most thrilled Amelia: Savannah is Amelia: undoubtedly Jac: Yeah, that ain't something I ever want to explain 😂 Amelia: she'd be less understanding about it Jac: None of us are understanding that Jac: sorry to your father Amelia: 😂 Jac: I think your mum would snap Jac: go full psycho Amelia: probably Amelia: they're very 😍🥰😘 right now Jac: that's nice Jac: bit gross but good Jac: she won't call you every 10 minutes Amelia: she can try but I won't answer Amelia: the friend I like best will be here soon Jac: Sounds promising Jac: I'll leave you to it for now, for real Jac: you better get ready Amelia: you're so Amelia: you Jac: what does that mean? Amelia: I don't need 👗👠💄 Jac: what's that, a humblebrag? Amelia: hardly Amelia: it's a compliment for you, you're cute for caring Jac: It's not cute, I just like to look nice Amelia: oh so you don't think I look nice? Amelia: rude Jac: everyone looks better for effort Jac: that's simple facts Amelia: anyway, I meant it's cute you care about my social life this much Jac: because I really need you being a loner to worry about Jac: no tah Jac: obviously I'm happy for you Amelia: you don't need to worry about me whatever happens Jac: It's not optional Amelia: okay Jac: I never stopped Amelia: you can stop now Jac: That's just what being friends is Amelia: I'm no expert Amelia: have to take your word for it, if anything Jac: I know you care about me too Amelia: but you're thriving so I don't have to worry Jac: I guess Jac: it's not just for the bad times though, is it Amelia: I hope not Jac: it's not Jac: come on Jac: pull yourself together and at least do 1 out of 3 👗👠💄 Amelia: fine, I'll put shoes on Jac: that's what I like to hear Amelia: 🙄 just because I'm ignoring my mum there's no need for you to take over from her Jac: I still can't do any handicrafts so unlikely Amelia: Savannah is unlikely to wear a homemade 🧣 so I think you're fine Jac: she loves anything thoughtful but I ain't gonna start there still Amelia: 💐 Jac: Naturally Jac: both our rooms look like a florist already Jac: makes up for the shabby walls and carpet you can't do much about Amelia: any time you'd like to fully lean into the 👵 I'll do you an embroidery hoop or something Amelia: very chic Jac: they do sell a lot of that sort of thing in the charity shops Jac: I'm sure your 🎨 will be better than whatever the actual 👵 decided to do 🖼 Amelia: SUCH a compliment, I have no idea how I'm not 😳 Jac: Charity shops are in Jac: I'm not going to call it thrifting, I'm not even half-American, wouldn't be able to take myself seriously Amelia: good, please don't Jac: vintage, upcycling, all acceptable Amelia: for my mother Amelia: I'll take how 'modern' my room here is Jac: I suppose that does make a change Jac: I love the buildings though, the architecture Amelia: 🎨 Amelia: yeah, would be inspiring if I had any time Jac: Is Cork by the coast? Jac: I know nothing about that area Jac: I'm like NEXT to the beach, it's incredible Amelia: it's one of the largest natural harbours in the world, if that doesn't make you want to come and visit me, well ?? Amelia: it has it's own lovely architecture Jac: You should work for the tourism board, honestly Jac: good speech, that Amelia: 🤷🏻 Amelia: I'm here for the 🤓 and you're already interested in that Jac: I'd go to Italy, if I were you Jac: but then, Denmark might have the most interesting criminal practices and laws, so that's a good choice too Amelia: you'll visit me there then, yeah? Jac: I forgot about Sweden, but those three are the real ones to consider Jac: and we can sort visiting when we're even a bit settled Amelia: okay Jac: we've only just left Amelia: thanks for that obvious reminder Jac: 😏 Jac: you know what I mean Jac: give me a chance to get my diary in order before you're saying I'm avoiding you or whatever Amelia: give you a chance to miss me, you mean Amelia: you've got one right now, because I have to go get ready Jac: Oh, if we had to wait for that, you'd never see me again 😉 Jac: have fun 👠👠 Amelia: 💔 Amelia: bye

I did it. Now I dont write, I draw so this is not gonna be so good. Its been through many revisions and I realized I spelt "Yuseke" as "Yueske the entire time so forgive me ill fix that next chapter. My Kuwabara x oc story:
Tumblr media
It was finally cold again. Miyoko was overjoyed, she had never liked summer. Sure there was no school and she had more time with friends, but she couldn't stand the heat. She detested those sweaty nights, or how the bugs always bothered her, actually she didnt care for any part of summer.
Miyoko had dropped so many hints over the years and yet somehow, Kuwabara still had no clue. His air-headed-ness was cute, but it made things difficult for the shy girl Miyoko was. She just couldn't work up the nerve to say something, and when she did, something would always interrupt her. However, today she planned to change that! Miyoko got dressed up as cozy as she could, ready for what her and her friends had planned and with a gleam of excitement in her eyes, she headed out the door.
That was apart from going to see her crush, Kazuma Kuwabara's baseball games, he would play every summer. When they were younger, he played in an official team wearing his "Mötor Head" jersey and smoking every opposing team he played against. Miyoko never missed a single game! Every home run, every strike, and every fight that broke out because of a bad call, she was there. When they got older, she would be there to watch him play against his friends, still wearing that jersey. She was always supportive of him, she was madly in love with him, and had been for awhile.
"Urameshi!! Where do you think you're going?? I was talking to you!" Kuwabara's feet hit the sidewalk with force as he sprinted after Yueske, who had walked only a few feet, forcing Kuwabara to stop abruptly frantically trying to steady himself without falling. After regaining balance, Kuwabara grabed a fists full of his friend's jacket to pull him close aggressively.
Tumblr media
"D-Dont tell anyone! Or I'll break your mouth, so you cant tell anyone nothin' ever again!!" Kuwabara's face was as red as the setting sun. Unfazed, Yuseke stared at Kuwabara blankly for a short second before sighing and shrugging the big flustered fool off of him.
"Listen man, I wont say anything. But this is getting really annoying. Ive told you before that you should just go through with it. Whats your problem with admitting to her anyways?" Yuseke looked to the helpless man and immediately regretted asking. Kuwabara looked off dramatically twords the orange and red sky. His shoulders slouched, slumping over, and fiddling with his hands.
"I....Shes really pretty, ya know? And...Im well...ya know?" His voice trailed off, as if wanting reassurance he was being foolish. When there was no reply, Kuwabara peeked up with a quivering bottom lip.
Yueske stood with his hands in his pocket saying nothing, only wearing a furrowed brow and tight lips. Suddenly, he burst into laughter. Causing Kuwabara to stand up straight and look at him even more embarrassed, and ready to punch him.
"I never thought I'd hear the great Kuwabara, warrior of love, admit to being ugly!!" Mocked Yueske. He bent over shaking his head and slapping his leg, resting his other elbow on his knee and laughing loudly. He straightened and wiped a fake tear from his eye. Kuwabara gasped in shock.
"What?? Ugly??" Again Kuwabara grabbed at his friend, this time missing and falling. He quickly got up and held up a threatening fists.
"Im not ugly!! Im just not a romantic type!!" He rubbed his fists on his chest.
"I am a warrior of love, so I know how to treat a lady and how to talks to girls, I just....." He paused, his mouth moving like hes trying to remember how talking works. "She's different!!" He finaly blurted out. "She reads them girly romance books that Kurama likes!!" With a frustrated grunt, Kuwabara rubbed his neck nervously and spoke in a much more serious tone.
"Ive known her a real long time, and I cant tell her yet cuz I'm kinda worried she only thinks of me like how Shizuru thinks of me." Yueske picked up on the seriousness of the situation and scoffed trying to lighten things up again.
"Well you are ugly, but I think she likes you anyway. Besides man, why asks me? You think I read them werid books?" Yueske pat Kuwabara awkwardly on the shoulder.
"No way. I asked cuz you have a girlfriend!!" Kuwabara turned to look at Yueske who was moving his arm away.
"So? Doesnt mean I know what im doing, just asks Keiko." The boys laugh, seeming to have calmed down a great deal. Before much more could be said, four familiar and approaching voices could be heard chatting playfully.
"Oh dear, you didnt actually take me seriously did you, Miyoko?" Botan said in a teasing tone.
Tumblr media
"I did!! I'm gullible, you cant just tell me anything about spirit world.I will believe it!! Everytime!" The two girls laughed.
"I've noticed," Interjected Kurama. "You have managed to retained alot of attributes from your childhood haven't you? I find that interesting." Kurama continud, wrapping an arm around Botan.
"Alot of people say that...is that a bad thing? I'm not immature am I?" Miyoko felt nervous now. Maybe that was the why Kuwabara never seemed to return her feelings, perhaps she wasn't mature enough for a relationship.
Keiko quickly spouted, "No no! I don't think he meant it like that, I think it's cute!" Keiko put a reassuring arm around Miyoko and smiled a friendly smile.
"Ofcourse! Its an admirable trait." Kurama said as Botan giggled.
Botan wagged her finger and pointed it at Miyoko with a knowing smile "Im on to you! You shouldn't feel so insecure!" Botan pulled her arm back and used it to hug Kurama's arm. "Don't be so hard on yourself, I know you're simply nervous, so you're being extra critical of yourself, but you'll do fine!" Botan hummed encouragingly. "And, we all look fantastic!" Botan added as they all rounded the corner.
Keiko stopped dead in her tracks, and started tapping her foot. "Well, most of us are...Yueske! I thought I told you to dress up!!" Keiko pouted, walking over to her boyfriend's side.
Yueske was the most casually dressed out of all of them. Just wearing his usual faded blue jeans, black converse shoes, plain yellow shirt and favorite green and yellow windbreaker jacket. He looked even more underdressed standing next to Keiko. She was wearing a lovely pale pink turtleneck, a plum purple suspender skirt reaching to her knees, long white socks, and loafers to match her skirt. Despite their contrasting attire, they somehow matched perfectly.
Yueske wrapped his arm around Keiko's shoulder and smirked."Kuwabara isnt dressed up." He looked over to Kuwabara and nodded his way while jutting his thumb twords his friend.
"What!! I am too!! This is the nicest thing I got!! Other than like...a tux or something!!" Kuwabara wore a blue Letterman jacket, a red sweater with dark blue jeans, and brown dress boots laced in black, he was indeed dressed up quite nicely. Miyoko blushed at the sight of his clothing, he cleaned up nicely as always. She couldn't help but smile at him, it was always a slight surprise to see him out of his school uniform. Kuwabara had a simular reaction to Miyoko's choice of clothing. She dawned a wine red A-line dress, knitted black leggins, and shin high beige lace up boots. She wasn't one to dress up like this, but she wanted to tonight, it was a special night after all.
Trying to redirect the situation and prevent Yueske and Kuwabara from fighting, Botan chimed in. "Well, I never have to worry about Kurama when it comesto presentation! Unless ofcourse, he's overdressed and making me look a fool!" Kurama and Botan giggled to eachother looking the most put together, like they were the parents of the group. Tonight, everyone was going their part to help Miyoko's odds, evident by Botan, who was wearing something much different from her usual choice of clothing.
She modelled a white turtle neck dress, form fitting reaching just above her knees with a small slit on the right side, with sleeves that reached slightly past her palms, she wore her wedding ring, hoop earings, beige velvet tights, and blue slip on flats to top off the look. To match her, Kurama dressed just as nice. Wearing a white button up tucked neatly into his dark brown pants, red suspenders with red suede shoes laced in black, and a matching wool trench coat to top complete it all. Now everyone felt underdressed.
"So what are we doing anyway?" Yueske asked scratching his cheek. Keiko shook her head "Are you serious? You've been waiting around this long, and you dont even know why??" Yueske simpled shrugged "I guess?"
Tumblr media
Botan sighed looking tired, Yueske was a handful for everyone. "Dont you remember, Yueske? I told you this morning! We're all having dinner!"
Botan motioned to the brick building everyone was standing next to. "You've been standing right next to the restaurant! Where I told you we would be meeting up, seriously! You didn't connect the dots?" Botan tilted her head with a hopeless look. Yueske gritted his teeth and roughly pulled Keiko by her hip to his, talking through his teeth. "Whatever!!" He sighed and let go of Keiko fixed his hair flustered, he brought his fists down onto his palm talking loudly. "So now that we're all here, can we go?? Im starving and you guys took all damn evening to get here!"
Keiko lightly kicked his shoe pouting up at him. "Hush!! Its not our fault you dont listen, besides you didnt even try to dress nice! So I dont feel sorry for you." Yuseke quickly stepped aside and raised his voice a bit "Hey! Didnt ya hear me?? I didn't know what was going on!!" Keiko roughly poked her boyfriend's chest, "Again, not our problem! Listen and you wouldn't have to worry!!"
Kurama was the first to put a stop to the bickering. He took a wide step twords the brick building and grabbed the glass doors handle, he opened the door and motioned for everyone fallow him inside.
Tumblr media
So theres that. I'll write more soon. I hope its as fun to read as it was fun to write.

Hey Julia, I have both a scientific and I guess personal/self-confidence question. I'm a first year grad student and my knowledge base is still quite narrow. When reading a paper, how do you distinguish between an experiment that was sloppily done and just not understanding why they did things the way they did? My group was assigned to present on a paper and we found numerous flaws/stuff that just didn't seem to pass a basic sniff test. (1/4)
While discussing it, I kind of led the charge on “Holy shit there are so many things wrong with this” and my groupmates agreed and found some odd things as well, but I wonder if we just got carried away? By basic sniff test I mean stuff like: only having 2 mice for an elaborate experiment but measuring them multiple times to increase the n so they could do stats (my instinct is this is wrong and confuses technical and biological replicates but I know some people do it), injecting mice with a viral vector but not injecting an empty vector into a control, surgical intervention w/o a mock, graphs where the means don’t look too different and there’s high variation but the p is very low, unconventional stat tests when there’s a more “obvious” one (makes me wonder if the obvious one didn’t give significance), doing 3 diff treatments on the same mouse at diff times then treating the measurements of outcomes from those treatments independently, etc. It looked like there was so much questionable stuff that it’s almost unbelievable to me which is part of why I’m doubting myself. It’s a pre-print and hasn’t been published despite being on bioRxiv for 1+ yr, but I know lots of good articles languish under review. We’re planning on talking to our prof to better understand it/clarify whether these are red flags or just us not understanding but I’m scared of appearing arrogant/like I’m critiquing something I just don’t understand.
Hi anon!
Whoooooo babEY that is an. Interesting paper for sure.
But firstly, to answer your question:
Q: How does one distinguish between an experiment that was sloppily done vs just not understanding the experimental design?
A: Basically gaining more experience in experimental design/research and knowledge of the field. It’s gonna take time and effort and trial and error and having a mentor to walk you through stuff (hence why journal clubs are great!). One piece of concrete actionable advice I do have is if you find anything in a paper that seems odd, try to find a similar design in other (reputable) papers and see what they did, aka gauging what’s “standard in the field”. If something conflicts (and there are always conflicts in research as we learn more and more each day), try to come up with your own conclusion, being as un-biased as possible.
And be picky while reading papers! Honestly, when I read papers, I treat everything with skepticism until proven otherwise. Science is a tool created by inherently flawed humans to understand nature, and the process is similar to a murder trial with a gazillion potential suspects and a gazillion more murder weapons. The evidence to convict suspect A and weapon B has to be really really robust to convince the jury. My PI’s PI’s (grand-PI?) method for reading papers is as follows: He reads the title first, then goes straight to the figures and figure legends, and then he formulates his own conclusions based off those data alone, before seeing if it agrees with the authors’. He warns that reading what the authors write may bias the reader towards possibly wrong conclusions.
As for those specific points from the paper you pointed out–I agree with you that those all do seem questionable, even having not read the paper personally myself. Your group is right to discuss those, and it’s great that you’re going to talk to a professor for clarification!
A point I have to mention here before closing off: so my understanding of BioRxiv is that it’s also a space to get casual feedback from peers before the formal peer-review process. A “pre-print” by definition is something that hasn’t gone through the formal review process yet, so I would expect some papers to be in a “works in progress” mode. This article seems like it may still very much be in those preliminary stages (hopefully!); maybe the data were gathered for a poster or grant proposal, and the authors decided to throw it in BioRxiv for more feedback/put down their flag on this specific experimental design. Therefore, I would suggest looking at the paper with that paradigm in mind–I would frame my thought process as “this is wrong as of now, but the authors could make it more robust by doing xyz”. This broader application would also be a great training exercise to gain that experimental-design-experience I was talking about earlier.
Hope this helps! And if you want, let me know what your professor says about the paper; I’m really curious as to its actual status (casual pre-print vs has it actually been accepted for publication?).
