Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?

So it turns out this is a really interesting question.

The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:

But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:

So what are we seeing?

Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.

Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.

Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.

There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.

I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).

These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.

The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.

So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).

.Meloni a caccia della ‘spia’ che ha divulgato le chat di Fdi: “Se io lascio dove pensate di andare?” “Smettete di fare i fenomeni. Se vi mollo io dove pensate di andare?”. La presidente del Consiglio Giorgia Meloni è adirata amareggiata per le chat con i suoi parlamentari e dirigenti finite sui giornali, al punto da minacciare le dimissioni. Se non può fidarsi dei suoi, e nemmeno degli alleati, tanto vale lasciare Palazzo Chigi. Il suo braccio destro Guido Crosetto dice che vuole vederci chiaro, e intende scovare le ‘spie’ responsabili della divulgazione di quelle conversazioni che dovevano rimanere interne al partito, e che contenevano anche considerazioni imbarazzanti per Matteo Salvini sullo stato della circolazione dei treni in Italia. Crosetto annuncia un esposto per stanare le ‘spie’ Crosetto, secondo quanto riportato dal Fatto Quotidiano, avrebbe manifestato l’intenzione di presentare un esposto alla magistratura per “violazione del segreto di corrispondenza” a seguito della divulgazione del contenuto di una chat, la stessa in cui Meloni si lamentava per la fuga di notizie e la diffusione di messaggi che avrebbero dovuto rimanere privati. “Io alla fine mollerò per questo. Perché fare sta vita per far eleggere sta gente anche no”, è stato lo sfogo di Meloni, diventato poi di dominio pubblico, sulle pagine del Fatto Quotidiano. E ancora: “L’infamia di pochi alla fine mi costringe a non avere più rapporti con i gruppi. Molto sconfortante davvero”. Sempre sul giornale di Travaglio sono finiti sabato alcuni passaggi delle conversazioni della chat incriminata, in cui il ministro Crosetto annunciava la denuncia, e altri componenti del governo e parlamentari si dicevano d’accordo. Perché l’elezione del giudice della Consulta è fondamentale per Meloni I vertici di Fdi avevano intimato a tutti i parlamentari di partire con anticipo per essere certi di arrivare puntuali all’elezione del giudice della Corte Costituzionale, prevista per domani alle 12,30. Un analogo richiamo è arrivato anche agli eletti di Lega e Forza Italia. Il voto di domani servirà a sostituire Silvana Sciarra, il cui mandato è scaduto a novembre 2023: Meloni vorrebbe far eleggere Francesco Saverio Marini, suo consigliere giuridico, lo stesso che ha messo a punto il ddl sul premierato, e per questo ritenuto inadeguato dalle opposizioni, che parlando di conflitto di interessi, visto l’autore della riforma sarebbe poi chiamato a giudicarla. Ma per portare Marini alla Consulta servono i tre quindi dell’emiciclo, cioè 363 voti. Da qui la necessità di poter contare sui parlamentari della maggioranza al completo, per essere certi di raggiungere il quorum in Aula. Il governo comunque è intenzionato a chiudere domani, come ha confermato il ministro per i rapporti con il Parlamento, Luca Ciriani: “C’è la possibilità e volontà di arrivarci, finalmente dopo tanto tempo, il Parlamento si è riunito troppe volte a vuoto in mancanza di un’intesa”. Chi è la talpa dentro Fdi? Oggi il presidente del Senato La Russa ha detto di non essere preoccupato per la presenza di ‘traditori’ dentro Fdi : “Ma ci mancherebbe se io mi preoccupo per una talpa, non mi preoccupo per i leoni, figurati per le talpe”, ha detto a margine di un evento a Milano, rispondendo a chi gli chiedeva se fosse preoccupato dalle talpe nelle chat. Ma il nervosismo ai vertici del partito è palpabile per quanto accaduto nei giorni scorsi e si valutano misure estreme, come silenziare le chat di servizio e richiamare i parlamentari tramite lanci d’agenzia. “Se non puoi fidarti di messaggini senza importanza come quello sulla Consulta, figurati se posti cose più importanti cosa succede”, è la riflessione del capogruppo alla Camera Foti. Ma l’identità della talpa non sarebbe ancora emersa, anche perché il messaggio sul voto della Consulta è arrivato a 184 persone tra deputati e senatori. Un’ipotesi è che si tratti non di un esponente di Fdi, ma di un collaboratore, che ha passato gli screenshot delle chat per ingraziarsi qualche giornalista. Una versione che sembra convincere anche Meloni, che nella chat apparsa sul giornale sabato infatti scriveva: “C’è gente che per una citazione sui giornali si venderebbe la madre”. Ma i sospetti si posano anche su “qualcuno che fa il doppio gioco e che non è più nel partito”, qualcuno che potrebbe aver lasciato i meloniani, rimanendo nella vecchia chat, hanno detto fonti di Fdi, qualcuno di Forza Italia. C’è insomma chi attribuisce il colpo basso a Forza Italia e alla famiglia Berlusconi. Tradotto: i mandanti sarebbero Marina e Pier Silvio, per preparare il terreno per una discesa in campo del secondo, prevista per la prossima primavera, secondo un retroscena Corriere della Sera.

I’ve been thinking about the work vacation in broader terms. Temporarily vacating your career, hobby, mindset, lifestyle, project. Doing things differently for a while for the simple sake of eventually returning to form, and seeing that form anew. It’s refreshing to unburden experimentation like that—to imagine it doesn’t have to be about changing you fundamentally, or testing out new paths to find the right one. It can be about vacating your normal for the express purpose of being placed gently back down where you started, recontextualizing who you’ve always been, or what you’ve always done. Sometimes we don’t need change, we need to shift or act. They’re not the same.

Il graffiare lento e intenzionale della penna riempie la stanza. La luce che entra dalla finestra batte sulla testa dell'ufficiale, cosicché Pavel ne vede il cranio pallido attraverso i capelli neri, unti, dove il pettine ha scavato una serie di piccoli solchi. Dall'appendiabiti nell'angolo penzolano una pistola nella sua fondina, la Tokarev TT d'ordinanza, e il berretto blu dell'uniforme di Rodos. Dopo un minuto buono, la mano si abbassa. «Lei sarebbe...?» «Pavel Dubrov.» «Dubrov. Come mai non l'ho mai vista in giro?» «Lavoro ai piani bassi. Negli archivi speciali della Quarta Sezione.» «E cosa fa?» Rimetto in ordine dopo che siete passati voi, pensa Pavel. «Sono l'archivista.» «Giusto. Il nostro bibliotecario.
