I will say that nothing was QUITE so badass as scaling the city walls of Daggerfall and fighting King Lysandus and his band of wraiths in a snowstorm (definitely going in the Gamer Books alongside my first meeting w Vulpes Inculta), but that it’s not really worth it because his ghosts’ bodies disappear and don’t really drop loot, and he’s essential and cannot die.

I try to! Even if they’re just hearts or short comments. I don’t have too many comments and I want to encourage and appreciate the people who take the time to write them for me.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Ummm “And My Heart Cannot Be” is probably the angstiest, it’s a response fic to Joly’s write-up of Ian’s personal quest where he’s made Tranquil (temporarily) at the end, so there’s a lot of angst on Solas’ part. Not so much on Ian’s, I suppose. :’)

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Ummm, maybe “Apodyopis”? It involves Ian and Solas finding their boundaries in intimacy but overall it’s very soft and fluffy.

Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the strangest one you’ve written?

For fic, not really! I had the idea for a Doctor Who / Mass Effect fic years back when ME3 first dropped, but I never wrote it nor do I think a Doctor Who Crossover is particularly strange. Tumblr rp has led to some strange crossovers, and some not so strange. I’ve written with Star Trek characters on my Mass Effect rp blogs and then umm Final Fantasy XV might be the strangest I’ve written in Dragon Age rp, if only bc it was a crossover and not an AU.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

I wrote a self-insert, modern girl falls into the AtLA world fic when I was still a preteen/teen and that got hate. I don’t remember what it said. And someone once accused me of “forcing solas” on the “male lavellan” I ship him with (Ian is non-binary and it literally said that in the art that prompted the anon hate, but I’ve learned people don’t read captions) and said it was “gross” lmao.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I’ve written it before, but not often. It’s not something that greatly appeals to me, I have some ideas for it atm but I have other projects I’m going to get to first.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

No, just had headcanons/interpretations stolen in RP.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I don’t think so!

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I roleplay w/ ppl does that count. One day I might turn the Solian stuff into a multi-chapter fic and that’d need Joly’s input to be any good.

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

ATM it’s still Solas/Ian.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I have a fic that’s actually a series of short (like one sentence to five sentences) drabbles that spans most of Inquisition and Trespasser detailing moments Ian came to Solas’ mind that’s been a WIP for years, but idk maybe I’ll finish eventually.

What are your writing strengths?

I’m most confident in my dialogue, so when I’m unsure about that usually it’s a sign that I’m going to hate everything I write.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I’ve never been able to write long-form, multi-chapter fics in my life. I have one planned for Solas and Thora and the only reason I think I’ll finish it is because it’s only going to be about five chapters. People who write like 20+ chapters amaze me.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I’ll write fictional ones, I’ll make up Elvhen or dwarven and even if it’s wrong or fake who cares it’s not a real language. Real languages I’m less keen on, I speak/spoke a few languages, if I were still practised in French I think I could manage that, but I haven’t kept up.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

It was either Hamtaro or Kirby! Right Back at Ya. I played pretend games where I made up OCs tho which was basically just the oral version of written fanfic/roleplay.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

ATM my favourite is “Who Am I in Your Arms?” which explores Solas and Ian after Wisdom’s death. Content warning for talk of suicide if you choose to read. I’ve struggled with wondering if it’s actually worth being proud of b/c it didn’t do great numbers esp on AO3, but I did a fair amount of research to get the head shaving done just right and I was able to incorporate a lot of my headcanons regarding Solas and how his relationship with Ian evolves as a result of the panic and grief involved in Wisdom’s passing.

Currently playing Fallout 4, thinking of making an Ian character, though he'd fit better in Skyrim or something. I just like Fallout 4 better. And him trying to survive in a post apocalyptic radioactive wasteland full of raiders, guns and monsters would get the same result.

I'm waiting for the dlc of pokemon Sword, and the reboot of Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom. Barley would like pokemon, I think 🤔

ian is sat at his desk,   opened sketchbook sprawled in front of him with a pencil and a gum eraser messily tossed aside.    it seems like he remembered that he needed to record the mini q&a right before the deadline and put his activities on hold for the few minutes it would take to film.   it’s dark inside of his room and he looks like he hasn’t gotten a moment a rest since he got ready that morning.   anyone who knows ian well enough to guess that he’s filming this at three in the morning is right on the money,   he hasn’t even changed into his sleeping clothes nor considered the thought of getting a wink of sleep yet. 

he wastes no time with further introductions and leans into his pc screen.   as he reads the first question,   an soft meow is heard from somewhere behind him.    “  what was your last regret ?   ”    ian reads out loud,   taking approximately five seconds to tilt his head in thought before he’s answering.

“   not quicksaving on skyrim earlier today,   ”    he frowns,    “   played for two hours straight,   did a whole ass dungeon quest and looted the shit out of my foes,   and then a goddamn sabertooth jumps out on me and that’s it.    i’m dead from the most random shit.    i nearly threw the controller across my fucking room,   ”    it’s clear that the memory is distressing by the way his words get increasingly heated.   he delays,    makes sure to breathe a sigh of forgetting,    and keeps on.  

“   anyway,   everyone is single,  ”   he reads off the screen again,   “  who would you hook up with ?  ”    ian can’t help but sigh loudly.   clearly,   this gives him much more to think about than the previous question.    “  shit,   who wouldn’t i sleep with ?  ”    he frowns deeply and looks out of focus,    lost in thought.  

“   you know what ?   i’m just gonna go ahead and say it,  ”    he shrugs,    “  cleo,   charlotte,   vic and aylie are all hot and the second thing they have in common is that they’re all my roommates,   so,  ”    another shrug and a smile,   he takes the easy way out.   sucking in through his teeth as a quick subject change,    he reads the third question.

“  if you had the chance to leave big bear and everything behind,   would you ?  ”    this one makes ian pause.    he’s not frowning or smiling or looking like he’s trying to get an answer out quickly,    he’s sitting somewhere between hesitant and carefully detached.    his eyes aren’t looking straight at the camera, they’re off to the side,  staring at nothing.

“   yeah,  ”    he nods slowly,   turning the word over in his head.   “  yeah,   i would,  ”    this time his nodding is definitive.   “   i came here on a whim,   and eventually i’m going to have to leave,  ”    he looks at the camera,   just for a glance,   before he’s looking off again.    “   most likely it’ll have to be soon,   once i’m confident with my portfolio to start sending it to schools.  ”    when he mentions his portfolio,   his hand is fiddling with the edge of his sketchbook.   there’s one last reluctant pause,   thoughtful and a little anxious,   and then in a split second ian’s demeanor changes,   like he flicked on a mental switch to smile and move on with it.

“   anyways, this is the last question !  ”    he squints,   reading,   “   who is the one person you would kick out from the sloth?  ”    ian chuckles to himself,   then hums.    “   honestly ?   i don’t have serious beef with anyone,  ”    he purses his lips,   back to the casual shrugging he opened the video with.   “  i’m just going to say callie and kieran and uh,   roman,  ”    he smiles innocently.    “   i already openly insult them on the daily so they know that i’d trade them and their presence for a grape.   a singular grape,   not three individual ones.  ”

“    and i’m done,  ”    clapping his hands once,   ian keeps the smile on his face, just a little more proud.   “   i’m about to go pass the fuck out but thanks for watching,   peace.  ”    right at that moment,   mimi jumps onto his lap,   and ian ends the video with a peace sign and a clingy cat on the screen.

D: Is there a song or a playlist to associate with your fics?

Hmmm… I’m not a particularly music-based writer - a lot of my inspiration comes from other stories, or visuals, or personal experience.  Usually musical associations come afterwards, once I’ve got a scene/character fixed well enough for a song to resonate with them.  It also means that I tend to associate songs with fic-moments, characters or fandoms-in-general rather than with a single entire story.  So, a list:

As mentioned before, the opening Instrumental of the Disturbed Sound of Silence Cover is a good match to the ambience of YJ:DW Chapter 15.

Coldplay’s Paradise gives me angsty S1 Artemis vibes.

For Danny Fenton, Coldplay’s Gravity and Simple Plan’s Astronaut get the sad feels going.

Most Imagine Dragons songs tend to make me think YJS1 due their being used in a bunch of super talented fan-animations and AMVs.

More broadly the general emotional tone of ColdPlay’s Fix You and The Fray’s You Found Me kind of underscore sadder, heavier moments of writing.

There was a lot more Sad™ and Coldplay in there than I expected.  Whoops…

S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?

I’m one of those annoying Tropes-are-Tools-not-Guarantees types so there aren’t many tropes I can confess to seeking out for their own sake, or deliberately inserting into all of my stories.  That said, I tend to be pretty characterisation-focused (even though I like long-fics to have some kind of accompanying plot too), and there definitely some tropes/patterns I’ll gravitate towards:

Believable Depictions of Grief/ Trauma and Healing/ ClosureI enjoy finding stories that actually address the hard experiences or losses that characters have gone through, that the process is messy, and ways they might attempt to work through/ around it, while still letting them be themselves, have moments of levity, live their lives and eventually reach a point of closure.  Grief depicted like this is weepy, delicious, catharsis and I am here for it.

Trust and RevealsI can get a bit frustrated with stories (especially crossovers) that have characters just know or decide to immediately overshare secrets and personal information.  Always more satisfied when those secrets are treated as secret by the narrative, with characters having to sleuth it out or build genuine respect and trust before learning/earning the truth.

Intrigue and the Suspense of AnticipationLove me some Fair Mysteries.  Also when creators are willing to play games with the audience, letting us reach the answer ahead of the characters and wait in anticipation for the penny to drop.  Good stuff.

 Actual Communication and MisunderstandingsThere’s a certain sort of masochistic anticipation that comes from seeing two or more characters end up in conflict because their own personal biases and hang-ups are causing them to misrepresent and/or read  things into the other person’s words/behaviour that aren’t actually there.  Usually followed by either a fight or moment when someone says something that throws that misinterpreted reading off-balance and the whole truth ends up being brought to light and resolved.  I also like this because it lends itself well to grey-on-grey conflicts; no clear “good vs bad” but instead all sides somewhat sympathetic and somewhat at fault for poor communication.

Character studiesKind of self-explanatory: stories that focus in to put the microscope on a single character’s emotional reactions to, and reasoning behind, specific canon behaviours/ events make me happy.  The more believably close to canon-characterisation the happier this gremlin will be.

U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much. 

Fair warning: I tend to read pretty widely, so this has the potential to balloon into a huge list. While I could definitely recommend some of the classic fandom bigs like BNHA’s PitViperofDoom and Laquearia, or DP’s Haiju (all of who deserve it and you should check out if you haven’t), I think I’ll take this chance to ping some writers from older/ wider fandoms:

tactfulGnostalgic’s Into the Spiderverse The Family Brooklyn Series.  Hits a lot of my personal trope favourites (character studies, reveals, believable depictions of grief, actual communication, accepting oneself) and also because oh my gosh that prose.  There’s an almost Markus Zusak-ian quality to their writing at points and the rest is just impeccable and fun.  Also packs some really good snappy dialogue.

skyflower51′s Skyrim storiesI really enjoy the environment design, side-quests and lore of Skyrim, and Skyflower51 does a great job of writing interesting characters to fill the blank-slate player-insert MC position, fleshing out in-game plot-lines and characters with much more nuance and detail by having a specific personality from within that world interact with and push them beyond what the limited RPG writing would allow, as well as exploring the possible identity/responsibility issues that come with being thrust into the role of legendary hero.  If you want a look at what Skyrim could be if written as a fantasy world instead of a videogame backdrop, these will probably scratch the itch.

Blackfriar’s Young Justice storiesOh hey, a fandom I actually write for.  Lovers of fluff will want to tread carefully here, as their stories are frequently rated M for angst and violence with good reason.  That said, if you like white-knuckled suspense, horror and anguish, or seeing Batman, Robin and Kid Flash being trialled by difficult situations both in and out of uniform, these will certainly get you your fix.  They also have some crossovers with Under the Red Hood which may satisfy those disappointed by YJ’s lack of Jason.

Also want to give a quick shout to Daruku Janubu/ DJAnubis, whose art for the TTxDP fic Turning Tables was what first got me into fanfic, and whose own story, Unfair Justice, made me cry.

So here's the thing.

For a long time now, every few weeks or so I would get another burst of motivation to maybe actually study something, and then I'd inevitably get distracted or lazy or busy or any number of things. It's been a problem.

I don't make New Years resolutions because that's always an exercise in disappointing myself, but I had... a thought. An idle fancy. That 2019 could be the year I made a real plan and made an effort to stick to it.

I read a book (Learning A Language by Ian Gibbs) that suggested breaking down language learning into tons and tons of tiny little actions that take very little effort and then just... doing as many of them as possible every day, anytime you get a spare moment. The idea is that something is better than nothing and eventually even tiny things will pile up and make a difference.

Sitting down and doing a full lesson out of a workbook multiple times a week is a lot of work, and honestly it's always been easier to put it aside "just for now" and play Skyrim for 12 straight hours instead. But I could probably take 5 minutes over lunch and flip through some flashcards. Take those flashcards with me into the bathroom. Turn on Raidió na Gaeltachta while I put my makeup on in the morning. Stuff like that.

I've already fallen off the wagon a couple of times, sure. (I have about 150 Anki cards due, yikes.) BUT I have a schedule now and at least half of a plan, so maybe this year I can actually make just a little bit of progress. And a little progress is better than no progress, right?

There’s a mod for Skyrim I rly want to use because some of it would suit the run I’m doing but I’m torn on whether to actually use it or not =//// A lot of ppl say it’s really buggy and the quests break often but it’s also super popular and the mod author insists that things do work if you “give them time.”

But also... the NPCs and new locations and objects are plastic shiny and jewel-toned and ugly for it..... hhhhhhhhh

And in the Oldrim files there were more “vanilla” optional files for some of them, but I’m not sure if the ones I’m thinking of in specific are included and I don’t see those files at all in SSE. I’m wondering if they’re packaged alongside everything else and you pick them manually? The mod author recommends a manual install so I’m not sure if that’s something I’d have to parse before sticking it in MO or if it’s just not included. And I’m not even sure if the NPCs that bother me the most were given alternate looks at all ever.

Geek Night for Valentines Day

Valentines day has always been a special event for me because it was also the day my husband and I became a couple. But now that I’m married, our anniversary celebration has moved to another beloved date.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t spend Valentines in a unique manner anymore.

So taking into consideration that this day also coincides with Ash Wednesday (gotta do some good ‘ol fasting and abstinence), and that dear hubby also wants to do the cooking in our humble abode (to avoid the Valentines fiasco outside), we’ve decided to go with a geek night celebration, since we haven’t done that yet in any of our previous valentines / anniversaries. (And it’s so totally us X3) 

Having that theme as our guiding light, we started to make hasty preparations (as in, 1 day before the actual event, lololol #cramming) .

PROLOGUE: Conceptualization & Preparation

Because everything will be revolving around the the said theme, we researched on some standard food setups from famous video games as our baseline of what feast we’ll prepare for ourselves. 

Here’s a summary of what we got from the internet: Fruits, bread, cheese, meat and potions. :P

From skyrim dishes to final fantasy and dragon’s crown food, we came up with a menu that is easy to prepare (or buy).

The only challenge we've come across was the replication of health and mana potions, since potion bottles are not exactly a norm from where we are. Luckily, we were able to find something similar from a mall near our home (thank you Landmark!) and proceeded with the other ingredients and table props.

As for the other elements of our celebration, we bought a new PS4 controller, since it wouldn’t be a geek night if only one of us was playing. Doi~! X3 

The game we’re going to play is courtesy of my older brother, which he had lend it to us several months prior. And what better day to play it for the first time than this, right? :D

So yep, we’re all set and ready to go~!

CHAPTER I: The Feast

After much hardships and infinite patience from Ian for having to wait for me to finish taking the best shot of our masterpiece, here is our food imitating art:

I’m not gonna mention the particulars of our said meal, but I must share that the fur is courtesy of mine and Ian’s jackets that were fortunately present in the closet of our condo; Wooden chopping board is from Jophet’s wedding gift, used for the first time, brown scarf as table cover from your s truly and Kai & Mond’s engagement apron gift to us as the ultimate medieval backdrop.

Other than the controller, food and potion bottles, not a single cent was wasted on this whole shenanegans. *pats ourselves at the back*

Our desert, though not exactly fitting to the video game food trope, was something I told Ian that I wanted to try several months prior to our Valentines celebration. But being the darling that he is, he bought it days before (on our monthsary, to be exact, but we never got to eat it) for us to consume. Aww~

CHAPTER 2: Gaming Proper

After having our fill from our medieval video game feast, the next step of our geek night was the gaming proper. Since I didn’t want to fight with my husband during valentines day (and because he’s too good at fighting games that i don’t even stand a chance) we decided to have a coop game with my brother’s PS4 game: Divinity.

Divinity is basically like a diablo game but it’s gameplay is turn based.

As always, I would pick a magic class with summoning skills, while Ian would pick the buff shield-type ones... or something close to what I’ve said, lol. The Shield & The Summoner... that’s already a fantasy YA story in the making, LOL!

And while playing, we would drink our pots to gain vitality and magic, lol. XD

And--- although it’s not that noticeable, we also wore some geek-related shirts to replace the usual fashionable OOTD counterparts we’ve done during monthsaries. For Ian, he wore his awesome green monster hunter shirt. Unfortunately for me however, I didn’t have a geek shirt lying about in our condo so I opted to borrow one from my equally geeky older bro (who’s also responsible for lending us the game). Sadly, the geek shirt I got is too old for my years so I couldn’t relate much. But from what I gathered, this shirt is from the 1979 series called “The Dukes of Hazzard”, that also had a movie remake back in 2005. Not exactly a gaming geek shirt but it’ll do, I guess. :P

Anyway, we played for hours until morning came and our eyes were already shutting down and protesting at us to get some sleep. :P

So in summary, this pretty much sums up our valentines celebration:

It’s simple, resourceful and cheap

It’s definitely unique and not the usual dining out in fancy restaurants, thus avoiding CROWDS (ugh, people)

It’s something that both of us always enjoy doing, that when you hear of it, you’ll say, “Oh, it’s so totally them labeled all over it.” :)

It’s fun and memorable

MagicCon things

- First of all UNNNGGHHHHH it's fucking over and GRAAAHHHHH it's gonna be over actual fucking Easter next year which means I've got less than a snowball's chance in hell of getting time off for it, which in turn means I've got to find a new job by March next year!

- But it was amaaziinngg! I can remember very few specific moments because it was all so much fun! I laughed so hard at the Dean's portrayal of a fairy godmother and the story about Adam and Ian McKellen going to a One Direction concert and just about everything else

- Having said that there's fairly few fandoms that I'm actually in, so there were quite a few actors that I didn't know/care about… Although this meant I had more free time and could sleep in later after partying!

- I went to the tengwar writing workshop which was cool

- @strycnosa was kind enough to give me a cute little Pygmy Puff - thank you!

- I was so glad to meet so many lovely people (not gonna tag list as I worry I might forget someone – I love you all!)

- Fuck me the costumes were brilliant again this year, like in the contest they were consistently very very high quality and awesome, I'm always overwhelmed by them every year (special mentions to @hattedhedgehog and @heartoferebor as they were fucking brilliant)

- I don’t think I actually have any pics of myself in the Thorin Stonehelm 2.0 costume as I only wore it for like 3 hours or so, it was VERY VERY HOT. I might put it on again later and take some pics.

- I finally met Dean O'Gorman after missing him for 2 years in a row – he was so sweet and nice! He signed Thorin's map for me and asked what I was dressed as (I was wearing my khajiit ears and tail at the time) and when I told him I was a khajiit, he said he used to play lots of Skyrim when they were filming the hobbit! And we talked a bit about how you end up doing all sorts of random stuff in it instead of advancing the plot, just because you can… :) I was a bit gutted because I wanted to get him to sign a picture I'd drawn instead of the map, but it's not finished so I couldn't take it with me! I didn't want to bring something I'd rushed or done sloppy because of time constraints so I'll have to finish it later. Hope he'll see it someday anyway.

- I did, however, manage to finish Graham's picture (I'll upload it later), and he was like “Wow, look at that!” when he saw it and was showing it to some bloke who was sat there near him – and get this Graham remembered my art from 2 years ago!!! (It might help to explain at this point that I did a couple of pieces of fanart that were like imaginary novel covers in a victorian/steampunky au with the dwarves, they were in a fanbook he got like 2 years ago. The 3rd and final one is the one I brought for him to sign at MagicCon and gave him a copy)  I mentioned to him that I'd had similar art in this fanbook and he said “Oh yeah, I remember!” and I was like WHAAATTTT???

He wrote “At your service” on the picture and signed it and when he saw that I was sort of trying to upside down-read what he'd written he said “at your service”, because that's what he wrote on it, but my brain just decided to turn itself off at that point and I just said “Oh thank you!” I'm such an idiot.

- I finally got my mead!!!! I did some tasting at that amazing stall and got a cherry and vanilla one and “witch's blood” which was cherry and chilli – both deliccciiious and probably won't last long. I'll sip them and watch the previous con dvds and cry

- And last but not least I already have an idea as to what I’m gonna do for cosplay next time! Better start now as it’s likely to be time-consuming!
