third time's the charm (social media au) - mv1
masterlist
Summary: The one where you are there to celebrate Max winning his third title, and the whole world is there to witness it.
Pairing: max verstappen x reader (model used: mun ka young)
Warnings: none other than some cursing, internet being the internet
Request: "First of, in love with your social media au works. Could you do one with Max where reader is a K-pop idol (solo) and one of the biggest artist both in Korea and internationally, ever since she debuted (early-middle 2010s) she's been associated/sponsored by Red Bull. So she and Max have secretly been together for a year or two until someone caught Max in Korea and everything starts unfolding. (Ps. fully understand if you aren't able too❤️)"

Legacy (what is a legacy?) Part 15
It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see I wrote some notes at the beginning of a song someone will sing for me
Hamilton, the world was wide enough. LMM.
one, two, three, four, Five, six seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen
Summary: Mike is 13. Born May 2009. Sid didn’t know he had a son. All Mike had was hope and a prayer for his and his half-sister’s safety.
(Sid is a dad of a teen he didn’t know about AU) Sidgeno.
Warnings: (for the total story) post-child abuse (all off-screen but it affects things and is spoken about often), learning how to parent, panic attacks, anxiety, based on last season, OCs?, realization about sexuality. Post breakups. Desperate lack of in-depth research for CPS in both PA/CA, melodrama?, kidfic, angst, slowburn, playing fast and loose with the law for drama/storytelling purposes.
-
Sid and Geno chose to order dinner rather than try to make anything from the kitchen the way they communicated on the ice during a play sometimes: simultaneously and with good practice. Of course, it tended to be about power plays, and now Sid should really get to the net so Geno could get the puck to him, but sometimes it's pizza.
One of the Italian places near them made good in-season meals and pizza for the kids. Geno mocked him for not having an app for the place or a food delivery service, but Sid would call in and talk to a person instead of ordering from a faceless app. All Sid had to do was call in the order, but he had no idea what the kids wanted.
How was he supposed to be a good father?
Some of that had to have played across his face as Geno laughed and told him to go ask.
Sid knocked on Mike and Marisol's door, looking over the crumpled computer paper that had now decorated the entrance. He hadn't noticed when Marisol was actually drawing, but it appeared a few days ago.
Marisol had drawn a landscape with a sun smiling down on three people on what Sid thought was ice. The ground was blue, at least; it could be water, but the two taller figures had black skates on. The most petite person, whom Sid assumed was Marisol, wore white skates. They were all holding hands, with Marisol in the middle. Sid's person was black and yellow, with what looked like an attempt at an "87" in a childish hand-scrawled on the chest. Mike's number was in purple and gold – much like the Kings' old jersey – but Sid wasn't sure of the number. Sid assumed it was his former team's colors.
Marisol opened the door and looked up to meet Sid's eyes. Sid wasn't sure he would ever get over the height difference between him and her—she was so small. Despite her yawning, she was awake.
"Hello Mari, is your brother up?"
She blinked at him and nodded rather than responding verbally. Marisol opened the door fully to show that Mike and Nikita had crashed out on Mike's bed. Both of them were curled around each other, and it was adorable. Sid nearly died of adorableness just looking at the two boys. He needed a picture to show Geno and the rest of the team. Anna would be so pleased.
He reached into his pocket for his phone before Helena's warning from a few days before floating back.
"No photos! I don't know you well, Mr. Crosby, but I don't think it will be an issue. However! California and Pennsylvania don't allow minors with contested guardianship to have their images used online. It wouldn't be safe for them."
Sid took his hand out of his pocket, leaving the phone where it was. He would do anything to keep his kids safe, even if it meant he couldn't share all the cute things that his kids did. While unfortunate—he wanted to be like the dads on the team, always with new photos—Sid could do without.
Marisol returned to playing with a set of dolls on the floor, clearly in the middle of some story. Jeff had shown up a few days ago with the dolls, saying his girls didn't want or need them anymore and insisted that they go to someone who would love them. Marisol's eyes lit up when she saw the dolls for the first time, so Sid was pretty sure Jeff's girls would be pleased with where they ended up.
Sid had been grateful because he didn't know what Marisol would even like. They hadn't had much chance to get her toys yet. Sid mentally set the next off day to ensure they got stuff for her soon. Nikita's toys were enough for now, but she needed more of her own stuff.
"Can I play?" Sid let the boys sleep momentarily and followed Marisol to the dolls. "How are you feeling?" he asked, settling beside her at her nod.
"Muy cansada." She said, lacking most of the energy he had come to expect of her post-nap self, "You be Dad. I'm Bluey." She ordered – neither of the dolls in her hands were of the dogs from the cartoon he had heard a lot about from the dads on the team.
Sid agreed and tried desperately to remember what cansada was in Spanish. He had just heard it on the TV program they had been watching yesterday morning. Something about sleep? But it was before the character had gone to bed…
Tired. It meant tired.
As they played for a bit, Sid gently talked to Marisol, trying to learn more about her feelings and whether she was doing better. It was hard because she kept on answering in Spanish, and Sid was sure it was just as disjointed as her English. With Sid's Spanish being… not good, to say the least, it was a bit of a struggle following along. It was better than it was a month ago, but not good. But he kept on trying.
Besides feeling tired, he had to find out what she was experiencing. Once he was reassured that she wasn't upset anymore or had too many immediate emotional reactions to the day, he gently asked, "Do you want pizza for dinner?"
She nodded quickly, dropping her dolls, "Pizza! I want pizza. With pepperoni and cheese!" She was loud enough to wake the boys.
Nikita was the first to move, still filled with the energy of children. He woke up and nearly vaulted off the bed like Sid had expected Marisol to do.
Mike was a much slower-to-wake-up teenager. "Pizza?" Mike asked, voice thick with sleep but somehow still processing. Food did that to hungry hockey players, especially when they were in their teens. Mike could and probably would, especially after today - both being on the ice for the first time in a while and Marisol's panic attack – finish the entire pie by himself.
Sid nodded, hiding a laugh at the hungry teenager presented before him. "Yeah, Pizza. What do you want?" He should know his kid's pizza order. That's a thing parents know, right?
Mike raddled off an order of toppings that Sid felt needed to write down; he still sounded half asleep. Marisol's order was much easier to remember.
"Hold on," Sid said, reaching for his phone to write it all down. Nikita was already giving him a basic order, saying that Sid had seen Geno eat a time or two in their youth—lots of tomatoes and mushrooms.
Once Nikita was done talking, Mike's brain seemed to come fully online, and he immediately backpedaled. "Cheese would be fine," he said, looking away toward Marisol.
Marisol didn't even seem to notice; she and Nikita were playing with the dolls and talking about pizza.
Sid sighed internally; someday, Mike would allow himself to take up room. "One meat lover with green pepper and jalapenos." He said firmly, using a little of the captain's voice he had for rookies who were nervous for their first games. He tapped the order into his notes app.
Mike looked up, and despite some of the worry and stress still on his face, even after the nap, he smiled. For once, he looked like the teenager he was rather than a lost child.

i don’t know why but that last picture you posted makes me think of ex!pageant johnny who did beauty pageants when he was a kid/teenager (maybe because of his mom? or because of sid?) and now is super disillusioned with them and kind of doesn’t want to talk about them UNTIL he has to because (maybe) sam? gets into the idea of winning the valley pageant (probably to maybe make a statement about it and johnny kind of is into that idea too) and he starts training her for it and anyway this is my long way of saying i think daniel should witness johnny doing pageant training and lose his mind
- landslided
So, I don’t know if any of you have seen Insatiable but that is what popped up in my mind
It’s about a girl (Debby Ryan) who used to be a big girl and lost weight after surgery (I think) and becomes “hot”. Her lawyer was an ex pageant coach who shows her how to do everything.
(Spoiler) he was lifelong rivals with this one dude for in the show before it was revealed the rival had secretly been in love with him the whole time and they make out in a bathroom BUT I do not care for an AU of this because I much prefer Johnny being an ex pageant queen beauty who helps his non-blood daughter and they bond (instead of everything Patty does to her coach YIKES.)
Johnny shows her everything he can remember—including the tips he got from the beauty queens around him despite not having the opportunity to use most of said tips.
Dark lipstick makes your teeth look whiter. Double sided tape and safety pins are your best friend. Don’t forget your rollers. The higher the heel the longer the leg but the harder it is to have the perfect walk.
One foot in front of the other, good posture, delicate hands, big smile for the judges.
It’s all a performance that you have to be great at or you have no chance at winning.
He usually wore suits as what was expected of him, sometimes themed outfits depending. He would have liked to get to wear all the pretty dresses the girls wore to see if he’d win that competition too. He is, after all, extremely competitive.
He put on some high heels to be silly once when he was cozying up to the judges before the pageant began and got told it was a shame he wasn’t a girl because otherwise he would have been snatched up by a big agency with those perfect visuals.
It pissed him off that he couldn’t do everything.
The creeps that ran the pageants and the annoyance of guys at school teasing him for his forced girly hobby had him bitter and over all of it. The sashes and dainty trophies fit beautifully next to his All-Valley trophy, but had to go. (he couldn’t bring himself to throw them away. It’d be like throwing away his accomplishments. They’re somewhere buried in a box.)
But when Sam brought it up, Johnny jumped to offer his help—cutting off Daniel’s pondering over where they’d find a coach.
Sure, Johnny had to explain to about 4 adults and 12 or so kids that he was in beauty pageants but it only dampened his excitement a little.
Daniel was…really interested in watching him demonstrate for Sam. Really interested—enamored.
He can’t believe Johnny knows nothing about makeup! No wonder his hair was always styled.
Poor Sam had to learn to strut in a room filled with tension between her dad and coach so thick you could cook it in the microwave
Johnny was all “Impress Daniel. Impress Daniel. Impress Daniel” in his mind and Sam rolled her eyes so many times they hurt.
Watching Sam thrive and use her beauty to her advantage was a gift for Johnny. He knows she’s had trouble with people not taking her seriously for it and it genuinely made his heart ache with understanding -he’s also had issues his looks. ‘Pretty boy’ always seemed to be a way of pushing him down.
They don’t let her karate skills go to waste. There are so many things she could do as a talent that it was hard to pick, but they settled for the ice chopping that she knew would make her father happy as a surprise. (idk if they would actually allow that, but that would never stop Johnny or her lol.)
cough cough catch Daniel smitten with the man that helped his daughter and kissing him in the dressing rooms after she wins. Anyone that makes his little girl that proud of herself is a goodie in his book. And MAYBE Johnny had been feeding Sam advice on how to get the angry blond girl so very similar to him and Sam’s ALSO kissed silly in a dressing room until Tory’s face is stained with all her makeup.

holdon i am catching up wth ur blog and the new au so lemme get this straight
if sid and girlypop meet at the 2010 olympics and if (like that one anon said) there might be a rivalry involved with those other people
does that mean we get to see sid and her meet when shes probably at her “coldest” or at her most “ice princess” moment? because thats so funny to me
like im imagining sid falling hard for this pretty girl and tryna rizz her up but he doesnt know if its working because she has an rbf and is stressed 🤣
Hello! Yes! This is 100% what is happening, he is falling flat on his face trying to impress her and make himself look good infront of her and he is getting nothing back.

Amber I can already see so much angst in the Sidney coparenting to lovers au, often stemming from the fact that our girl and their son is kept hidden from the world for so long!! Like initially they agreed it was best that since they were just coparenting that there was no need for her to be involved in his career, but imagine her + their son watching him achieve all these great things far away from the ice?!
Imagine those moments where he’s winning his cups and Celine is sending him congratulations messages all up until she knows it’s Kathy who is celebrating that cup.
YO IMAGINE SHE DRUNKENLY CALLED SID BUT KATHY ANSWERED SO CELINE GOT HER BOYFRIEND

Hockey Holidays Dear Author Letter
Hello author!
Thank you for reading this. I'm really excited to see what you come up with. If you want clarification on something here or to check if I like something specific, you can message me on anon or message @ice-ice-lizzie. She knows my tastes really well 😂
I’ll share some specific ideas for the pairings, but here is also a list of some tropes that I really like in general, and if one of theses speaks to you more than whatever I put in the actual pairing prompt, please go for it!
General Likes:
Established relationship
A/B/O
Secret relationships
Sugar Baby AUs (bonus points if they’re both somehow still in the NHL)
Enemies to Lovers
All Star Game / international game shenanigans
Light miscommunication
Body swap
Hockey curses
Werewolf AUs
Media fic (Twitter, Instagram, news articles, text messages, etc)
Goalie nesting
Identity porn
Falling in love over technology (texting/dating app/online forum)
Two person love triangle (I love my teammate but also this mysterious online person, and they’re the same person)
Christmas!
If you’re writing something smutty, I like genuine affection, laughs during sex, daddy kink, kink negotiation, Winner’s Room, consensual somnophilia, trying out new kinks in an established relationship, and size difference.
I’m not a fan of humiliation, an entire scene of rimming (sorry Nate), actual injuries caused by the scene (but if someone is injured and then goes into winner’s room, we’re good), boundary pushing during sex, straight up rape (don’t mind dubcon due to being drunk or winner’s room or similar).
General Dislikes:
Non-linear timelines
Kidfic (de-aging is totally fine! Just don’t want like wishbabies or other kids)
Name Soulmate AUs (where the name is written on the wrist or something)
AUs where neither person is a hockey player (AUs where one person is in the NHL and the other is not are still good)
Genderswap / Rule 63 / Always a Girl AU
Sad Endings
Existing real life partner bashing (just pretend they don’t exist if needed)
Death – major characters, minor characters, pets, don’t want none of it
Pairing Specific Info - this is all the same as the prompts on AO3:
Joey Daccord/Chris Driedger/Philipp Grubauer: This is such a fun trio for me. Some ideas for them: preseason ’22 shenanigans being soft with injured Chris, Grubi trying to get them to do German Christmas celebrations, goalie nesting (with one, two, or three of them at the same time), Joey as their joint sugar baby, online dating without realizing who they’re talking to
Sidney Crosby/Nathan MacKinnon: Strongly prefer Nate to be 20+ for any relationship. Some ideas for them: A/B/O courting chaos, Sid giving gifts, long distance communication (texting/calling through the season or playoffs), their families celebrating Christmas together, drunk hook-up at Nate’s Cup Day
Sidney Crosby/Claude Giroux: Enemies to lovers, my beloved. Some ideas for them: outsider POV on their established relationship, summer wedding date, hook-up at an international tournament/ASG, winner’s room during their peak anger years or as cheerfully familiar vets.
Leon Draisaitl/Connor McDavid: Secret relationship (how good they are at it up to you), hanging out in Connor's hot tub (and/or skinny dipping), rewards for milestones/good hockey, bio dom/sub AU, Grindr hook-up not knowing who they're talking to
Andre Burakovsky/Philipp Grubauer: Burky following Grubi from team to team makes my heart melt. Would love to see him as Grubi's preferred nesting partner, A/B/O dynamics, secret relationship, comfort during injuries, or soft away-from-families Christmas fic.
Thank you!

SidGeno Parent Trap AU!
Will someone please write this i stayed up till 1 aimlessly typing this, ive already fleshed it out for you pleaseee
So Sid and Geno played together as Rookies for the Penguins in the 2005-2009 seasons, lighting up the NHL world as they had done always, slowly finding love and happiness together (after the Me 3 years Super league convo, you saw how blushy Sid was), quietly getting married in an discreet court house somewhere in Pittsburgh, having blissfully unprotected sex before and after the 2009 Stanley Cup win, just happy and in love and their life and success was just beginning to blossom.
But Sid finds out that he’s been pregnant with twins for some time now, having been nearly 12 weeks pregnant already by the time the final round was played. Geno finds out that there are some legal issues from escaping the KHL in order to play for the Penguins, and so to settle some ruffled governmental feathers, it would be best if Geno went back to Russia to fulfill those duties. Sid is extremely worried about the awful timing of the pregnancy and the sheer amount of alcohol consumed during the Cup celebrations, and Geno is worried about Russia ever letting him out of the country, or worse; finding about his relationship with Sid.
They hole up in a remote corner of Canada for the off season, just trying to soak in the time they have together before Geno goes back to Russia. Days are spent going to doctors visits, holding hands as they walk around the lake, cuddling on the couch at night, Geno’s big hands rubbing Sid’s belly, little feet kicking as hard as they can, while Sid giggles and twists round to kiss Geno.
Sid safely delivers the babies, two identical adorable boys, who have thankfully have not had birth defects as Sid was fearing, and so the rest of the off season is spent trying to decide what to do, how they could go back to their respective corners of the world and try to raise their kids. They agree to split the kids, and keep silent on where they came from.
Geno returns to Russia with a little baby boy, who will mostly be taken care of by his mother and father. Sid does the same, heading back to Cole Harbor more often than he would during the season, always glued to his phone and even taking phone calls from his mother on game days.
So then the actual story goes, 16 year old Daniel Patrick Crosby and Dimitri Evgenevich Malkin meet at Worlds to play for their respective countries, and like a random dinner clash between Russia and Canada find Daniel and Dimitri really confused because they look exactly the same; dark curly hair, strong solid bodies, angular doe eyes. Their teammates chirp them, saying they wouldn’t know who was who if they switched sweaters before the tournament.
They meet up again after Russia wins, meeting in Daniel’s hotel room while his roommate is away. They’re like
“oh when were you born? September 1st, 2009”.
 “Oh shit me too”.
“ oh who’s your parents?”
“Evgeni Malkin, big KHL superstar”
“Sidney Crosby” because duh who doesn’t know the greatest player ever.
Maybe they have a ripped picture like in the movie, like with Sid and Geno holding the Stanley Cup like they did in 2017. Daniel has Sid, and Dimitri has Geno, and they’re like “ yeah Dad never talked about who Papa was, but that he loved him, but they couldn’t be together”. So they whip out the picture halves, stashed in their wallets, and tada they fit. They’re twins!
Since the tournament for them is over, Russia with the gold and Canada with silver, they have a few days to themselves to watch the rest. On a midnight run to Tim Hortons, sharing a box of Timbits, they agree to swap places to meet each other’s dad, and then switch back during the Olympics, let say it’s somewhere in America, in a few months time. Daniel and Dimitri spend the next precious days coaching each other on how to be each other. Daniel is conveniently mostly conversational in Russian and can understand better than he speaks, but Dimitri is a quiet kid so it works out. Dimitri works hard to soften his Russian accent and worm eh into his normal syntax more. They get haircuts together, the barber laughing at these rambunctious twins and their beautiful curly hair, and they laugh at the ridiculous stripes they agree to shave onto the sides of their heads.
Before they separate at the airport, they exchange necklaces, a #45 from Daniel and a cross from Dimitri.
Dimitri flies back to Cole Harbor, and finds his dad waiting for him. He looks older than the picture he has, more lines on his face, Definetly shorter and grey-er hair, and sad eyes. If Sid notices his son hugging him tightly and for longer than he normally does, he doesn’t say anything. They chat through the drive home, to the lake house that Daniel told him about. Dimitri can only stare and try and absorb who this man was, the man who birthed him. Sid asks him if he’s ok as they eat dinner on the dock, bare feet dipping into the cold water. Dimitri can only mumble “you’re the best”, as he snuggles his head into his fathers chest. Sid can’t help but think that his son’s voice sounds different; the way he pronounced best sounded just like Geno.
Daniel manages to not say too much on the flight back to Russia, desperately trying to memorize more vocab and grammar before landing and being picked up by his grandparents. The cooing and lecturing is the same in either English or Russian, so he smiles and just lets it wash over him. He tentatively asks where his Papa is, and Grandmama Malkin says he’s probably wining and dining his latest girl. They go home and Daniel is stuffed full of food, everything Grandmama could have possibly made for his arrival. Geno comes home later that night, tired but eager to congratulate his son for winning Gold for Russia. He notices that his son perhaps looks a little different, ruffling the funny haircut that he had gotten, but more at the expression of awe on his face; a similar expression Sid had on his face when he told him he usually went out last before a game, many many years ago.
So yadada ya, they’re enjoying the time that they have with their respective dads, occasionally wringing out a small story or a sad look of their faces whenever they mention anything about each other. So the Olympics are rolling around, and they’re all going to be in one place (lets just say that Sid and Geno had never attempted to make contact whenever they played against each other, afraid that they might get caught) But Daniel has frantically been calling Dimitri over Geno’s new girl and how he might propose and would ruin their plan to get their parents back together.
Shenanigans during the Olympics, one groups disappearing before the other can see them, until Geno is in the elevator shmoozing his girl until he sees THE ASS tm across the room by the front desk. Sid turns around and just smiles sadly as the elevator door closes.
Then the scene where Sid is walking down the hall and Dimitri and Daniel open the doors at the same time and suddenly Sid is confronted with what he thinks is the son he hasn’t seen in 16 years. They pull him into a room, and explain the whole swicheroo, and Sid is mad because there’s nothing they can really do, he’s prepared to let Geno move on and do what’s he needs to, but resigns himself to being alone.
Then the pool scene, where Geno and his girl are lounging with his parents, and Sid walks his fine ass down the stairs and Geno falls in, scrapes up his nose a bit, Sid bandages him up a bit. Daniel and Dimitri reveal themselves to Geno.
Some time in between tournaments, with Russia and Canada on the rise to be competing for the Gold Final, Daniel and Dimitri bully their fathers into a family dinner at a nice restaurant. They cut a handsome swath at dinner, good looking men in good looking suits. Geno instinctually files in last, whether it being his remembered deal with Sid, or merely to ogle a bit as he pushes in Sid’s seat for dinner. For fun, after dinner, they find a nearly empty outdoor rink, equipped with rental skates. Daniel and Dimitri take off, chirping each other and racing and checking each other into the low boards enough for Dimitri to flip over and out of the rink, Daniel wheezing with laughter as Dimitri hefts himself back over. Sid and Geno skate around at a sedate pace, both having played a round that day and simply watching their sons fool around. They don’t say much. They can’t really. They can only quietly enjoy each others presence, wondering where had all the time gone, all the plans they had had.
The final round for Mens Ice Hockey has arrived, Russia vs Canada for Gold, and Daniel and Dimitri can only watch and wonder to see who will come out on top, and what will happen with their parents, watching as Geno checks Sid into the boards. Sid refuses to give up, and so Canada ends up winning the Gold. Like the 2014 picture where Geno and Sid hug after the game, what the camera doesn’t see but their sons see from behind the glass is the shaking hands of Geno and the single tear from Sid.
Like in the movie, before everyone hops onto their respective planes to their respective corners of the world, Sid and Geno make sure their sons aren’t faking this time, and that they go back to who they belong to. It’s how it has to be.
Cue the rain sequence, the sad music, the umbrellas.
Sid and Daniel return to Cole Harbor, still down pouring and quiet. They don’t say anything in the car ride back to the lake house. They finally arrive at home, and take some time to unpack and get comfortable. They silently look at each other, each longing for their other halves. Daniel had become so close to Dimitri, finding out who he was and planning the whole quest to meet their fathers. Sid just missed his husband, and playing against him after fighting so hard to play with him just made him wish for retirement sooner. They hug, and with Daniel under Sids arm, quietly wander down the bank of the hill towards the dock.
Although there seem to be two people already sitting there, with their feet in the water. Geno and Dimitri turn around, identical smug looks on their faces. Dimitri says, his accent hovering somewhere between the hard Russian accent and the rounded Canadian pronunciation, “hey Dad, did you know the Penguins still have those private jets?”
“Ye-yeah, they do bud”, Sid murmurs, still looking at the tall Russian slowly making his way towards him. Daniel duck out from under his arm to sit with his twin and watch the two goofballs that are their parents figure it out.
“I made mistake of not coming for you once, Sid. I’m not do that again, no matter how brave you are.” Geno says
“And I suppose you expect me to go weak at the knees and fall into your arms, and cry hysterically and say we’ll just figure this whole thing out, a bi-continental relationship with our sons being raised here and there, and you and I just picking up where we left off, and growing old together and… And, c’mon G, what do you expect? To live happily ever after?” Sid warbles, his tired eyes welling up with long withheld tears.
“Yes—to all, except you don’t have cry hysterically.” Geno murmurs, cupping Sid’s face and wiping a lone tear as it falls.
“Oh, yes I do—” Sid is cut off as he is kissed (AKA THE BEST KISS SCENE EVER, CUE THE MUSIC)
Daniel and Dimitri can only grin and fist bump as their parents finally kiss after 16 years apart. They put and end to it when Geno starts to dip Sid into a deeper, more lurid kiss and some major groping, and they push both of them into the water.
During the epilogue with This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole, scenes flash by of Geno and Sid holding hands in front of a press conference, their sons standing by their sides, as they announce their retirements from both the NHL and KHL after 20 years, and their relationship and their sons to the hockey community.
Another scene where Daniel and Dimitri attention Shattuck St. Mary’s to finish up high school before inevitable being drafted when they turn 18. It would be the first and only time they play together on the same team, Crosby-Malkin proudly spelled onto the back of their sweaters.
Another scene where they’re all playing shinny on a frozen pond somewhere, Geno getting distracted and just sweeping Sid into his arms after he scores a goal, kissing and swinging around until they both fall into a snowbank, their sons launching themselves at them at top speed.
Another scene where Daniel Crosby-Malkin from the Chicago Blackhawks and Dimitri Crosby-Malkin from the Dallas Stars face off for a Stanley Cup final
And finally, a small wedding held in Sid’s backyard in Nova Scotia, where Daniel and Dimitri stand with Flower and Tanger and Kuni and Duper and Talbo and most of Geno’s Russian buddies as their parents finally get married again, kissing happily under the sunset and the lake shining behind them.
Bonus scene: A few months after the wedding and a few days before the season starts up again, with everyone home, Sid comes down the stairs for breakfast with a strange look on his face and something in his hands. He’s a graceful 43 now, grey hairs really pushing now, so when he says “you boys up to being big brothers?” Geno spits out the tea he had been drinking and jumps up and envelops his husband.

34. Sid goes into a full on mating heat at the West Point hill climb, Geno fights off all comers.
35. Geno is intersex, with physical characteristics of both alpha and omega. Sid's into all of him.
36. Evgeni always goes to Sidney post heat (or rut). It’s one of many things they don’t talk about.
37. During a goal celebration, Sid and Geno experience a spontaneous bond. It freaks all involved out.
38. Alpha/Alpha rival knight au or Alpha knight and Omega squire? Just something with romance and armour.
39. Tired of being teased and the punchlines of locker room jokes, Sid asked Geno to take his virginity/knot him.
40. Geno and Sid as two alphas who pine for each other and try to pretend they don’t want each other, but they do.
41. sid has a kink for fucking new brides, so omega geno dresses up in bridal lingerie and begs sid to knock him up
42. Alphas and omegas will fuck betas, but they don’t end up staying with them. This is what Sidney knows from experience.
43. Medieval abo au, Sid's castle is small and he and Geno have to consummate their marriage in front of all of Sid's patrons
44. omega/omega pregnancy kink, no getting pregnant angst, just skip right to the good stuff: already pregnant and horny about it.
45. rookie sid and geno are still a bit too young for a real heat, so they put in some practice together and things get out of hand
46. “i’m rich and i’m not supposed to talk to servants but the person that scrubs my floor is really cute” (/smells fucking amazing)
47. New relationship during the holidays and somebody forgot to take their suppressant and goes into rut in between dinner and dessert
48. Omega Sid and alpha Geno hook up, it's a one night stand. Sid notices he's pregnant a couple weeks after and goes to hunt down Geno
49. Baby NHL omegas come to Sid for advice on omegas working with alphas, dating etiquette with alphas and what its like to get knotted by an alpha.
50. Alpha Geno courting Omega Sid to be allowed to mate him, over expensive gifts to dinner invitations to being possessive and protective on the ice
51. Sid can’t stand being touched or scent marked by strangers, but Geno’s never been that to him. (Authors choice re: what designations they each have)
52. Regency AU: Mr Sidney Crosby is as well know for his big estate and he wealth as he is for being an omega who tops all the alpha gentlemen he take to his bed
53. Sid is always yapping on the bench, but in relationships his communication skills go right down the drain when he has a cold and can't rely on scent cues for help.
54. you rescued me from the creepy person that was hitting on me in the bar and i’m glad you did because MMHMMM you are hot and smell like nothing i’ve ever smelled before
55. Sid is a beta who Geno always calls on when he goes into heat/rut. It’s fun and no strings attached and they’re friends. Only Geno slowly realises he wants more than that
56. one is an omega and the other is a beta (the inherent convenience of a self-slicking butthole; the beta figuring out how to satisfy their partner in heat, who can go for HOURS)
57. Only werewolves are a/b/o’s, humans are just humans. As a general rule human!Sid stays out of wolf business but Evgeni keeps making it his business by acting like Sidney’s *his.*
58. sid being teased relentlessly for his big alpha dick in the locker room, and loving it, kinda strutting around naked but also going all pink, and geno really LOOKING for the first time
59. Sid has been on high level suppressants since juniors and nobody knows if he's hiding being an alpha or an omega. Geno has been curious for YEARS but never asked, till something happens.
60. One of their alpha/omega statuses doesn't kick in until after retirement-- they spent a good portion of life thinking they were a beta but now that shit is going BANANAS. Puberty at age 40
61. Sid/Geno/Anna where Sid + Geno are both Omegas and have banded together like "we don't need any alpha nonsense" but then Geno meets Alpha Anna at the Olympics and shit gets real, real fast.
62. Tradition has it, your mate is supposed to smell best to you. But Sid usually smells like old milk. How the fuck is Geno supposed to work around that? Because Sid is definitely the one he wants.
63. Alpha Sid's enthralled with Geno's omega trills. Geno's kind of a picky eater (like he's picky about everything) Sid revels in the challenge of finding snacks and gifts that will make Geno trill
64. geno's heats come on fast and with no warning, sometimes in the middle of a game, so once in a while sid can help a buddy out and slip geno some fingers to just get him through to the intermission
65. Established Sid and Geno who have not bonded for some reason (is one beta? are they waiting for something?), with a side of whoops, accidentally bonded to someone else in a heat-related medical emergency.
66. You’re an actor/other famous person that I really admire and I just saw you in the street and as I was debating whether or not to say hi you came up to me and started flirting what do I do?? (but make it hockey abo)
67. Sexual dysfunction: Maybe an alpha who's having trouble knotting, or a bata having a hard time staying hard his fist time dating an omega, or an omaga who's having issues self lubricating. Emotional comfort through sex!
68. Camboy or porn AU where the one who does sex work specializes in alpha/alpha or omega/omega porn. Ideally the one watching is still an NHL player and has some complicated feelings around their own same-gender preferences.
69. one is an alpha and the other is a beta (first time getting knotted and being overwhelmed by it plus like LOTS of lube; or the alpha likes getting fucked but doesn't like to be knotted so a beta partner is the perfect option)
70. omega/omega sid figuring out how to top geno's giant peach ass when omegas aren't particularly well-endowed (dick-extending knotting dildo? practicing flexibility? finger-shaped bruises trying to keep those cheeks pried open?)
71. Green card heat bond au! The KHL don’t want to release Geno from his contract to let him play in the NHL. It’s becoming messy and it looks like the Penguins may lose their legal case when someone suggests a heat bond green card.
72. Trophy wife Geno: He likes to be pampered, he like his valour track suits, he likes lounging around in fur coats, and he likes getting knotted when Sid comes back from a win...and maybe even more when he comes back from a loss…
73. Heatfic PWP set during Geno’s rookie year when he barely speaks any English. Up to you which one is in heat—I just like the idea of Sid and Geno trying awkwardly to communicate & then not really needing to once instinct takes over.
74. Beauty and the beats/ or some kind of monster au. Geno is saved by Beast!Sid and nursed back to health in his castle. By the end Geno is as in love with the monster as he is with Sid's other self. This could be any dynamic combination.
75. Sid’s concussion messing up his alpha or omega cycle, or maybe delaying him from differentiating. Everyone calls him a late bloomer, which Sid doesn’t care about except when he sometimes sees Geno post heat/rut and feels confusing stuff
76. ABO specific sex toys: training knots for omega's, dilators for alphas and betas who want to sleep with other alphas, knotting flashlights, double headed dildos for omega/omega pairs? The list goes on! The only limit is your imagination.
77. Geno - omega who's never gone into heat. Maybe he never will. Despite the pessimism of his younger years, this has turned out to fine, because he and Sid have an excellent and well-established sex life regardless, and SID's heats are pretty great for both of them.
78. Nontraditional abo dynamic frat au: Either with alphas, betas, and omegas all in the same house or maybe separate different fraternities? It could be two competing alpha's from different frat houses? or maybe a beta at an omega house party feeling *very overwhelmed*
79. Geno breaks up after bonding with someone. It’s sudden and it happens mid-season and he can’t go home to lick his wounds so instead his bond-withdrawal becomes a team issue. The trainers and medics all have opinions and advice, but it’s Sid who gets him through the worst of it.
80. Omega Sid is wedded to foreign Prince Alpha Geno because male Omegas are rare and a 'sign to God'. The marriage is a sign of goodwill from the people of Sid's kingdom, he's a low noble but his Omega status makes him more worthy. They meet for the first time in front of the altar
81. Omega Sid is ‘President’ of the NHL omega groupchat/association, Sid and Seguin have a friendship forged through both declaring they “dont need no Alpha!” But cant stop having ‘issues’ with their closest Alpha on their teams. Sid-Seguin gossipy omega friendship as they explore life getting closer to alphas (Geno, Benn)
82. Beta Sid's the king of locker room talk and all the rowdy shenanigans that go on there. He flirts with everyone shamelessly and Geno has no idea how he's supposed to tell if Sid's being serious or not when he tells Geno to "take a picture, it will last longer" or something to that degree. (He really wants Sid to be serious).
83. Age difference Coach Sid/ Rookie Geno au. Geno needs to get bonded to be allowed to travel overseas and play for the Penguins. Sid agrees to be his alpha without really thinking about it until Geno shows up wide-eyed and perky at his front door and things just derail from there. (and by derail I mean office sex at the arena.)
84. Sid is an Omega but pretends to be a suppressed alpha as omegas are considered special and rare, almost local celebrities unto themselves, plus most wouldnt want to see an Omega risking injury playing professional sport. The presence of an ideal Alpha in Geno is making it harder and harder to hide his omega side and instincts.
85. After the NHL All Star Game, alpha Sid ends up with omega Geno’s gear bag. Sid doesn’t realize the mix-up until he gets home. When he opens the bag, he instantly recognizes the smell of omega arousal, and a couple of things become clear: Geno was getting hot while playing in the ASG, and Sid has unfettered, private access to Geno’s scent.
86. Pirates of the Caribbean/Black Sails au—Zhenya is a wealthy young omega hostage on pirate Sid's ship. In the end Sid can’t follow through and hand Zhenya over to the people who want him in exchange for gold. (or maybe Zhenya offers knowledge of something better for them to steal in order to save himself and they fall in love during the adventure)
87. Someone tried to take advantage of Sid while in heat/rut; it’s something that Geno hears whispers of when he is a rookie, but no one talks about it and Geno doesn’t have a nearly good enough grasp on English to try. He just stays later to practice with Sid and sits next to him at clubs and uses his body to block people when they try to touch Sid.
88. After years of dancing around their feelings, AlphaGeno and OmegaSid start ‘hooking up’ and then accidentally bond in The Playoffs bubble. This is a problem because newly bonded omegas tend to become bratty and act out in many ways and try to test their alpha, sometimes taunting other alphas to see if their own alpha will come defend them. Chaos on and off the ice ensues.
89. Werewolf/abo au: an unsuspecting Geno (omega or beta) comes across Alpha Sid's pack (maybe on a full moon run or Sid helps him with car troubles in a snow storm or maybe Geno visits Sid's pack after moving to the area as a gesture of good will.) Either way, Sid knows as soon as he sees Geno that he wants him for his bond mate, and will do whatever it takes to get him to agree.
90. Geno scent marking Sid; maybe they’re not bonded or in a relationship but Sid is *his*; his captain, his friend, the person who laughs at Geno’s jokes and exchanges knowing looks with Geno whenever one of their teammates does something dumb. It’s possessive and technically rude, but whatever. Sid likes it, Geno argues when someone (Flower, probably) tries to call him out for it.
91. Rookie Geno is ultra-competitive about everything from who goes last out of the locker room to how many eggs he can eat in a minute. Everyone sees it as Geno locking horns with Sid, competing as young alphas do. Only, Sid doesn’t seem offended or annoyed. If anything, he seems delighted and more than a little turned on. (Bonus points if everybody is wrong about one of them being an alpha).
92. Alpha sid being possessive and jealous over oblivious omega geno and maybe getting into a fight (throw in some alpha ovi shipping these idiots but also teasing sid about his and geno’s past hookups because he might be onboard the Sid geno train but he’s also a sassy bitch about it) bonus if it also has backy/ovi (if we squint not here to take the spotlight away from the two headed monster)
93. Mail Order Alpha AU: To Play in the KHL Omega Geno needs to be bonded. Metallurge team management offers him many options for Russian suitors, but Geno being Geno doesn’t like being told what to do. Instead of accepting any of those, he finds himself a nice Canadian alpha on "mail order bride" message boards. Bonus points for slightly awkward but also hot “bonding night scene” and Sid charming Geno's family with his broken Russian.
94. Sid never joins in with any of the rowdy locker room talk about hook ups/sex/knots/heats/ruts. Some of the guys joke it’s because Sid’s a virgin or frigid. Geno knows that isn’t true, because they hooked up one time when they were rookies. In retrospect he thinks it was probably Sid’s first time, and he knows he messed it up because instead of talking to Sid and seeing if they had anything real, Geno got back together with Oksana. It’s been years since then, and he and Sid are friends, but sometimes Geno wonder’s ‘what if...’
95. Geno broke an Alpha/Omega bond when he escaped from Russia to come to the NHL. He promised himself he’d never bond with anyone else ever again. He’d just have fun. And he is having fun fucking around. He was never allowed to do that at home. He probably shouldn’t be doing it in the west because he’s getting a reputation but he doesn’t care. He’s free and no one can tell him what to do. It’s his life and his choices and he’s never going to bond with anyone ever again. Only without noticing he finds himself falling for his best friend, Sidney.
96. nesting!! it can be because one of them is pregnant, or something bond/hormone related, or just a pre-heat behavior, but i love fics where the omega partner is secretly stealing the other one's clothes and small personal belongings to make a nice safe nest/den in a closet or spare room or even a trainer's room at the rink. i especially love this trope if the nesting partner is a little embarrassed or evasive about it, lol. my heart says it's sid who's building a nest out of geno's things (and being a little squirrely about it trying to keep it secret) but i think an omega!geno version would also be delightful.
97. Demisexual!Sid in an a/b/o world where designation/romance/sex has never been a big deal to him. He’s never understood his teammates stories of losing their minds with heat lust, or falling in love at first scent or losing days in bed with someone riding out their heat/rut or anything like that. Most people tell him, he’ll understand one day when the right alpha/omega/beta comes along or question if something is wrong with his designation/him. Geno never does. For the longest time Geno is one of the few friends who doesn’t think anything is wrong with him. But the problem with friends is sometimes Sid falls for them.
98. I'd love to read an a/b/o fic involving an unplanned pregnancy. Maybe they're in some kind of casual fwb arrangement off and on for years, or maybe they just hooked up the one time and had tacitly agreed to never speak of it again. I'd read pretty much any take on this prompt -- an Obvious Child-esque version where they decide to have an abortion but also realize they have feelings for each other; a version where they decide to have a baby but both think the other just wants to be friends and co-parents (not romantically involved); a version where the pregnancy forces them to reckon with their true feelings for each other... really, anything goes!
99. Loser's sacrifice / victor's prize fic, version 1: Geno wasn't drafted by the Pens, and he and Sid have spent their whole careers as rival captains (you can decide if it's a no-love-lost rivalry or just mutual respect for each other or a hatesex chemistry type dynamic). The Pens lose to Sid's team, and Sid offers himself to Geno as the victor's prize. (I'd read any version of this, but I'd especially love an alpha!Geno / omega!Sid fic where Sid's the only omega captain in a predominantly alpha league -- and this creates some weird tensions, because the sacrifice is supposed to be about the humiliation of an alpha having to submit to another alpha. Maybe Sid doesn't usually accept or offer sacrifice (someone else on the team does it for him).
100. Loser's sacrifice / victor's prize fic, version 2: Sid and Geno are together (you can decide how serious it is). After a bad loss one night, Sid offers himself as the sacrifice to the opposing team (or maybe just to their captain). Geno is insanely jealous and territorial about it and pretends to be sulky/angry, but in the days after he can't stop furtively jacking off thinking about it. Sid figures it out eventually, and somehow it becomes a thing for them. Sid starts regularly offering himself as sacrifice but always comes to Geno immediately afterwards, smelling of the opposing captain/team, so Geno can fuck someone else's come out of him while Sid tells him everything the team did to him.
101. I've been thinking about an a/o universe where non-alpha/omega pairings are still socially stigmatized, but there's an active scent-masking party/club scene, where people take blockers and go to hook up with other people without knowing what their dynamic is. Maybe the clubs themselves are a little taboo -- sort of like gay bathhouses in the '70s or private BDSM clubs -- so it's mostly people who are in the know, and there's a general understanding that you don't acknowledge people you meet there if you encounter them out in the world. I'd love an alpha/alpha fic set in this verse - could be a non-hockey AU where Sid and Geno meet at one of these clubs, or a canon fic where they don't realize the other is into alphas until they're out of town on a road trip and they run into each other at one of these clubs.
102. There are no omegas in the NHL—at least as far as anyone knows. Sid’s been taking illegal scent-blockers/suppressants and passing as a beta since he presented as an omega as a teen. The only people who know the truth are his parents, his agent, and Jack Johnson (who helped make excuses for Sid at SSM during his first heat). Sid doesn’t intend to reveal his secondary gender until his retirement—once he’s won a Cup or three and gold for Canada and proven decisively that omegas can play at the highest levels. Except something happens (his supply of blockers is interrupted, or he has a breakthrough heat, or something) and Geno finds out. I’d especially love it if this was early in their NHL careers, before they knew/trusted each other and were able to communicate well, but I’d definitely also read a fic where Geno finds out many years into their friendship, and has to grapple with how much Sid’s hidden from him.
103. old timey pirate AU! sid’s a naval officer who’s clawed his way up the ranks despite significant prejudice against omegas. he’s achieved his dream of captaining a ship, but his life is a lonely one, in part because he can’t let himself be vulnerable with anyone (in case they use it against him to challenge his leadership). the only bright spot in his life is the years-long cat-and-mouse game he’s been playing with evgeni malkin, a notorious russian pirate captain who‘s managed to evade arrest for years, often by tricking the navy or managing to cleverly conceal his crew’s stolen loot when their ship is boarded by the Navy. Geno’s an alpha, but unlike Sid’s fellow officers, he’s always treated Sid with the utmost respect—even if he also gleefully delights in tricking Sid’s men and repeatedly evading capture. in fact, after years of meeting in various port towns and at sea, Geno seems to consider Sid a friend. (Sid knows Geno finds him attractive, too, and has made it clear—always teasingly, never in a pushy or aggressive way—that he’s available, should Sid ever want to go to bed with an alpha.) up to you what the plot is, but I’d love something where Geno’s luck finally runs out, and Sid’s the one who‘s tasked with bringing him back to shore to be tried (and most likely hanged) for piracy. make Sid choose between his honor + love of rules and his unacknowledged feelings for geno!!

Ice girl sid AU
ok so i was asked for it, and realized that i never made the ice girl sid Au its own post, so below that's what's going on here! the AU in question is here. there are some mild copyedits and flushing out of ideas but nothing major.
Sid/Geno - Ice girl Sid
word count: ~6200 words
Please note this is in a 'timeline? What timeline?'-Verse. Imagine Sid and Geno being in their early to mid-20s? Warnings: over-sexualization, dismissal of talent/intelligence/effort because of it? very real issues that women have to face when it comes to pay. Hockey in this verse is even more insular than in reality?
So Sid's career ended in early juniors thanks to an injury. (probably a wrist. maybe a shoulder. Either way, he can't play.) He's mostly over it. or he would be if he was able to get a job in hockey. he sees so damn much!
Geno is the captain of the pens and is frustrated by the lack of playoff success. he's got support, he's happy here in Pittsburgh but. they've never won. or really made an impact. He's got a good group, but they are missing something.
Sid is still the playmaker he always was; he just has no one to listen to him. And Geno has no idea what's about to hit him, but he's got an eyeful anyway.
To get out of Cole Harbor and escape the pressure and disappointment, Sid ends up in Pittsburgh going to school. Unfortunately, the NHL is even more insular than in reality, and Sid can't get a foot in the door. But, he's determined to stay in hockey somehow, and his dad suggests coaching with analytics. Because Sid sees things. The problem is that no one would hire an 18 to 20-year-old with nothing but a burnt-out junior career and a bad shoulder.
So Sid goes to school for that somehow. Sadly, Sid still has no significant connections to get hired and trailed while in school. All of the connections he made before his injury weren't enough once he was no longer playing. Not to get employed in a team, that is.
The Ice Girls jobs entail post-warm-up but pregame entertainment, cleaning up the ice, running the Zamboni, and entertaining during the ice resurfacing from the Zamboni, entertaining the crowd between lengthy stoppages in play and TV time-outs. There are more girls on the team than guys, but they use the Ice Girls moniker for two reasons: the mixed-gender team finds it fucking hilarious and as a defense.
The pens are equal opportunity trying to draw in EVERYONE. And wellllll, Everyone on the Ice Girls is wearing very revealing stuff and hockey skates while they clean the ice for games. The Pens pay Very Well (for industry standards), and it's enough to keep them employed. But the Ice Girls all know they are eye candy first and foremost. Their ability to skate is extra.
There are some issues with the girls being grabbed, but sid and a few of the other bigger members of the Ice Girls get very good at making sure people don't go near them. But unfortunately, the management of the Ice Girls doesn't really believe them when they bring the issue up. So, as a result, the Ice Girls have trouble being taken seriously, which runs throughout the fic.
Sid despairs that this is his life a little but does everything anyway. He already knew he would someday make money off his body; this is just a different way than he expected. Nevertheless, he grimly throws himself in to be the best he can be. He's joined by most of the Ice Girls; They expected more of their job. They have talent, but very little is used in the Ice Girls' official jobs. Still, Sid sucks it up because there are few ways he can still make money in hockey at this point, and damnit, if this is what he has to do, then that's what he's going to do. It won't be forever, though. He's going to get a degree, get some experience coaching, get hired as an assistant coach or an analytic guy for an NHL team, and that's what the plan is.
By the time the season starts officially, Sid is very, very, very popular with the crowd - Once they get the correct uniform that emphasizes his assets, he will be there for a while. The fans love him. (the Pens equal opportunity eye candy idea proves to be very popular and successful.)
At first, Sid does the entertainment bits while the other Ice Girls drives the Zamboni. Things like shooting the T-shirt cannon or throwing gear into the crowd. He's got the arm for it. This situation lasts for a short time before the Ice Girl's bosses realize that Sid is better and happier when he skates around the rink. The audience is more delighted when they see him in those shorts. He's also swift and extremely good at making sure the ice is perfect.
(there is a Side Plot going on at the Ice Girls trying to get more of their skills shown rather than just seen as sexy people cleaning the ice and there to entertain the crowd. And they want to get paid better.
Most girls are figure skaters, some are dancers, and some are former hockey players. They have spent the same number of years, then the guys on the ice have to learn their skills. They would like to use their skills, please.
One of the girls is a former cheerleader and choreographer. She is the loudest about their (dance) skills being used properly. She leads them in getting the management to make it more about dance rather than just standing around and looking pretty.
The guys want to wear actual shorts or pants while on the ice. Sid gets very used to wearing tights when working. When the girls get pants, it's skintight, so they don't honestly care unless they get loose-fitting pants too.)
(listen, the overt over-sexualization and dismissal of skills and combating it will be a running theme.)
(One of the girls is aiming for the PHF as a forward; She's one of Sid's classmates and is on the uni's girl's team. Sid works with her sometimes to keep his skills up as much as possible. They don't work together too often because of her team's schedules. She's the only one who can follow Sid when the game is that intense. She and Sid campaign with a few others to convince the Pens to let the former players do trick shots and get the crowd going. It eventually works. She gets taken by the new Pittsburg PHF team as a forward.)
Other than the future PHF player, Sid isn't really close to the others on the team. It's because he can't stop commenting on the play in the games to the others. While some like hockey enough to follow what Sid says, they aren't that intense. it is like they have their commentator for every game. 'the pens could be so much better if they just paid attention to *insert reason here*' or 'if Letang just shot it to that one winger instead of going D to D on the power play….' Repeat for every game. The other Ice Girl team members have long since learned to tune him out. One of the other former hockey players is like, 'I see what you mean, but I don't know if you're right,' and doesn't interact with him much with the commentary.
To deal with Sid's constant stream of speech, the Ice Girls stole/procured one of the equipment team's old iPad with all the analytical apps – just to shut him up. He will watch and rewatch plays a lot. He knows it's somewhat illegal, but he's not going to use the iPad or anything or sell the info. He's just watching hockey, so it should be fine, right? and because he's so outside the community, all Sid can do is watch the iPad like a hawk. In other words: He does it a lot. And when not doing the Ice Girl duties, he's staring at the iPad or watching the game.
Anyway! Sid is doing his thing after the first period in a game in early November, yapping to himself. Officially, he's working in tandem with one of the girls – not the hockey one. Unofficially, she stopped paying him attention when they stepped on the ice. He's thinking about the pens' power play as he skates. He's sure that no one was listening to him, but he has opinions, and he wants to talk about them.
The thing is, Geno does hear him.
**
Geno is still at the bench as the Ice Girls pass by because of an interview with Potash. He hears an Ice Girl skate by with the shovel just before Potash goes live. The guy is just going on and on about the powerplay.
Geno's first thought is 'ass' because the Guy's Ice Girl uniform and tights needed for the games is a thing of beauty. (Sid still takes the best care of himself as he can. and there is a subsequent of the pens hockey fandom who knows Sid's name for that reason alone.) But then Geno's next thought was, 'What do you mean I am not shooting too enough on the power play?!' so he's seething for the interview. And how dare it come from an Ice Girl of all people. How dare this person just say stupid shit and not expect Geno to fight back? It was a frustrating first period, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Geno is angry because Geno's Side of this story is the same as always until that point, but the pens haven't had much success in the playoffs. 'So close, but so far' might be the definition of their last few years. The Pens get to the playoffs but rarely convert that into resounding success.
This year hasn't been better – in fact, the media has been worse than ever before, and the team has not been off to a great start. Geno's been hearing about it for years. He's the captain, but there have always been trade rumors about him. While Mario's made it clear that as long as Geno wants to stay, he's got a place, it's tough to know that the fans may not want him at all. Geno just wants to play his best, and he worries that he can't communicate with the team enough to make that clear. And maybe Geno's expecting too much from them? He doesn't know. In addition to all of that, Geno is having problems with the coaching staff. The current coach had gotten stuck in a rut with his system and refused to change or adapt it. Even if the whole team isn't playing well with it. No one trusts the coach much anymore. Geno honestly wonders when the owners and Mario would fire the guy.
So all of that swirling around, and he hears criticism from a guy on the Ice Girl team?! How dare some guy who isn't even playing say Geno wasn't trying enough, who thought so little of Geno that he was willing to say it while Geno was on the bench.
So Geno is angry enough to stay on the bench after the interview; damn his mid-game rituals and the Coach's speech. Potash gives him a look when he stays but doesn't actually comment. So Geno lingers after the interview hidden in the shadows and watches the guy, expecting to give him some piece of Geno's mind.
Geno watches the guy skate around. Just as the Ice Girl Guy gets close enough for Geno to speak to, Geno notices the guy is still talking. Geno realized that even when the guy on the other side of the ice where no one could hear him, not even his partner, he was still talking. The guy didn't even seem to notice when the girl he was skating with skated off. He just keeps talking while skating.
So Geno stays on the bench and changes his mind: he won't yell at the guy during the game. Maybe the Ice Girl Guy didn't even think he would be heard. Geno has most of the anger from the first period drained out of him at this point. Yelling at an Ice Girl won't change the game; they have no outcome on the players. If they mattered, they would be players, not just eye-candy. Or at least somewhere else. But Geno will tell the staff; it was inappropriate. The guy has to know.
The Ice Girl guy makes a frowning face like he's working something out as he makes one more pass past the bench. This time when he's close to Geno again, Geno hears something about the faces offs of number 26 on the other team, not about Geno's play. The Ice Girl Guy was nearly absent-minded as he spoke. But he was also correct.
If this face-off idea worked, then it would be brilliant. Geno hadn't been able to win a face-off against the guy, but no one on the pens had. This Ice Girl guy had a way to solve the problem 26 created. Geno didn't even get a chance to say anything to the guy, even if he wanted to. The guy was past the bench in a few seconds, still talking to himself.
Geno stared after him. He was brilliant - maybe, he might also be insane. Also, completely unrelated, the Ice Girl Guy skates like a dream. That is a bit distracting.
So Geno goes out and does follow the advice for the face-off in the second period of that game. He wins the face-off and scores the go-ahead goal because of it. Geno catches sight of the guy standing near the Zamboni during the celly. Geno can't point to give credit where credit is due; there isn't enough time, but, also, he's not going to rat the guy out to management.
The pens end up winning the game.
**
So Geno now has to know more about that guy on the Ice Girls. Geno always stays on the bench for a few minutes each period to hear what the guy says. The guy will always pass the bench the moment before the interview and then around again at least once during that time. So Geno lingers every home game.
It's the best coaching advice he's ever gotten. This guy had eyes for the game. It wasn't just a random one-off. But, unfortunately, whoever this guy is, Geno has no idea why he's on the Ice Girls and not behind a bench. So Geno stays for every home game and wishes he could listen to the advice for the away games.
Geno has no idea what the guy's name is, but he knows the guy, at times, has a better view of the ice than the coaches. He just sees things. Geno thinks the guy had to play before, but now he's on the Ice Girl team and cares for the ice now. It drives Geno a little mad not knowing anything about this guy. This goes on for several months.
The team notices, of course. So Geno's been staying on the bench between periods. And will often wait for the intermission interviews and walk back with the other guy. Of course, he still comes in and does the captain thing during challenging games, but the new behavior is chalked up to superstition and is generally accepted because the pens are winning a little more now.
It does not take the team long to put the idea out that he's got a crush on one of the Ice Girls. They immediately start chirping Geno about which Ice Girl he's got a crush on. No one takes this seriously until they pay attention to one of the TV timeouts when the Ice girls are fixing the ice. Geno is watching a large group of them.
The team puts two and two together, then gets four. They now are trying to figure out who their captain has a crush on. The chirping gets even worse when they see the guy Geno's eyes follow during the stoppage of periods. Like Geno's type before had been tall skinny models. But yeah, after that guy skated by once and half of the team on both benches' heads turn, they get it. Geno just bullies them until they stop doing more than the occasional chirp.
(That same Side of hockey fandom that already knows Sid's name has videos of Geno watching Sid.)
**
Sid notices Geno, of course. One tends to notice when a tall Russian hockey player that's the captain of the team he works for is lingering on the bench. Especially if said Russian was always eyeing him when he's on the ice at the end of periods. Sid has no idea why Geno is staring at him but figures it has to do with the ice and the quality of his work. He redoubles his efforts to make sure the ice is perfect. Ice quality always matters to Sid. Geno never says anything. The most significant exchange is an 'I see you often' head nod during stoppages in play.
At this point, Sid isn't even really aware that's he talking much as he skates around the ice. He doesn't think much of the fact most of the things he's been thinking about games have been showing up in Geno's play. They have coaches who see the same things with the Ipads.
**
Geno just watches and waits. Not everything the guy says works or even Geno would want to do in the middle of a game. Maybe if the guy were playing with his own wingers, would some plays or ideas work, but as it was, Geno used a lot of what the guy said.
There is a significant element with hockey that requires just actually being on the ice. However, the guy has good enough ideas to make Geno listen. He's also cute when he's figuring something brilliant out. Sometimes the guy has no idea what to do, but he's still talking through plays. Geno likes those times best because that's when Geno can see the brilliance in action.
One time in a game that the pens were winning by a lot - they were really clicking on all lines - the guy wasn't even thinking about the Pens. Geno had been confused when the guy started talking about basic plays and how his goalie would like to lie down most games and try not to join in cellies. It takes him a whole period to realize the guy was talking about a kids' team. He's still doing it once the second intermission starts. The kid's team the guy coached sounds adorable. Geno kind of wants to die when he realizes that he imagines the guy on the ice in a coach's tracksuit, surrounded by baby hockey players. He wins the game instead of doing any introspection about that daydream.
Geno is self-aware enough to know that not only does he have a person for good game advice, but maybe a minor crush.
It's one of the times that Geno is watching in late December that Geno learns the guy's name.
**
A large divot in the ice in front of the pens' bench will take work before the Zamboni can resurface the ice before the third period, and that's honestly all Sid is thinking about. Sid is bent over, trying to fill the hole without putting his knees on the ice. The figure skaters on the Ice Girls were very clear that the ice won't tear up the tights, but Sid isn't convinced. But then, Sid starts thinking about that goalie and how they were weak high on the glove side.
He was not expecting Evgeni Malkin to talk to him. or agree.
Sid freezes because the Ice Girls team isn't supposed to talk to the players or coaching staff. (Sid looked it up before out of curiosity, and Sid thinks it's officially for dating reasons, but it also applies to ya'know giving advice.) he looks up to see Geno staring at him with a bemused expression. 'Yes. Tell me more about the glove side. or special teams.'
Sid is terrified he's about to be fired, and this job might be the only reason he'll actually make it to the pens in a long-term way. And it pays for his rent. But he still explains the glove Side observations. Geno nods. Sid just hands him the secret to life.
Then Geno asks him about the power play idea he had earlier in the game.
Which the pens power play is not doing good for the pens in the last few games since Geno's RW got injured.
And it somehow never comes up that Sid is technically not supposed to be talking to the players. He just finished working on the ice and getting out of the way for the Zamboni. So if that meant he was on the bench waiting with Geno and talking about special teams, Sid was happy that someone was actually talking back.
**
Geno wasn't expecting actually to talk to the guy, but now that they are talking, the guy, Sid, really knows his shit. He's also cute and won't stop talking about hockey but isn't expecting Geno to tell him team secrets. He is just so earnest. Geno likes talking to him.
He gets back to the Room, and half his team is waiting in the hallway watching him. (listen. The coach is not a fan of actually talking to the team mid-game unless it's negative in some manner. There's a reason Geno felt ok to be near the bench during the games, even as captain.) Geno's crush is a tease and a delight for the whom team. It's a great distraction from the shit that's happening outside of games. They've been chirping him for weeks. At least they know his name. At least Geno has spoken to his crush! Of course, it's all very high school. There is betting involved. Geno is happy to see his team happy.
**
Geno gets a cut one game at the end of a period that needs treatment. The team was accusing Geno of hiding Sid, so they sent one of the other players out to talk to Sid while Geno was preoccupied with medical. Geno sees no need to warn them. Sid is a little thrown, but overall, he just talks the guy's ear off. They have no idea what to do with Sid's constant hockey stream. (IDK who. someone who is actually sid's winger.) Geno laughs and laughs. Tanger goes with Geno the next game, and he and Sid get along like a house on fire. Flower came out next time; he needed to be distracted from a really, really bad period. After that, they get along even better.
They all have to keep their conversations short most times, though. Sid does have a job to do. A job that Geno is figuring out rapidly as he watches the games and what the Ice Girls are doing that he was seriously undervaluing. Sid does get in Geno's face a few times not to insult the Ice Girls. Especially as the fic goes on and the Ice Girls actually get to use their talents more and more.
So, in response to the time limit, the team messes the ice in front of the benches before the end of periods. They want to make their captain happy for a few minutes. They always apologize to Sid, though, for making him work. Sid just makes them stay and listen to what he has to say. They always agree.
The team is still losing, though. A lot. It's better with Sid's advice and Geno's happiness (and the team's fun with/bonding over that), but it's not perfect. The media's been calling for Geno's head, for Flower's head, to trade the entire core. The only part of the team that isn't facing constant media pressure is the Ice Girls team - which is gradually getting better press and duties as the Ice Girls are constantly pushing for more accurate, not undervalued work. Less solely sexy stuff and more actual entertainment.
Eventually, the shitstorm reaches its peak in late December – just after Geno learns Sid's name – and the pens fire their coach. Sully, the new coach, is much more open to Geno making up plays and getting goals correctly. Sully has a better system, but it's still a struggle because now they face January with very little hope.
But the Room is happier, and that makes things so much better.
**
When the coach was fired, the media kind of blamed Geno. Called him a coach killer and wondered snidely how the old coach lost the Room? One of the papers put together that Geno was on the bench for more intermissions than not and tried to use that as a reason to argue for a trade involving Geno.
Sid reads this and is angry because they talk about the game every time Geno is on the bench for intermission. Geno tries to make it seem like it was nothing, but really it's not. He's glad he's not in Toronto, but the media's pressure is intense. It's really unfair, and while Geno acts like it doesn't matter, Sid sees the worry.
One day, before a game, a few weeks after the new coach was hired, just as the media is its worst, Sid was skating with the other players on the Ice Girls team at PPG on the ice. They are practicing the trick goals they've been allowed to use as part of the intermission entertainment.
Geno shows up and just wants to skate. (the morning skate for the team in like two hours, and Geno just needs some time to think.) The Ice Girls just wave Sid away. So Sid and Geno just state around, talking. It's the first time Sid really feels like they're close friends, more than just a hockey player and a good advice person.
Geno needs the distraction, so Sid just talks. Sid tells him of the team he's coaching, of the classes he's been taking, how much he's looking forward to graduating, explains the trick shots, praises the future PHF player, and doesn't talk about pens hockey, not once. Sid tells Geno of a prank that Flower swore him to secrecy for. He swears Geno to secrecy, and Geno laughs and laughs (and ends up being Flower's alibi). Geno slowly talks back. About things that aren't hockey and how the pens are doing.
When the Ice Girls have to get off the ice and Geno has to get ready for morning skate, Sid and Geno are laughing, hanging out by the bench.
**
And well, Geno knows this is when he goes from crush to more with Sid. Sid knows so much about hockey and is serious about his job, but he also understands so much more. He's kind, and when he smiles, it lights up his whole face.
So he doesn't leave until he has Sid's number and permission to text.
**
Sid, well, he thinks Geno is cute, funny, smart as hell, and plays such good hockey, but... out of his league (literally and metaphorically.)
There is a bit of an acceptance issue Sid's got going on about his place in hockey.
All Sid was thinking about was just trying to cheer up his friend.
**
The pens turn it all around. They start winning more and more. Sully doesn't glare at Geno every time he walks into the Room, so Geno is happier there overall.
Sid isn't limited to just short exchanges in between periods with Geno anymore. And he's happy about that. The text, at first, for hours. Sometimes about hockey, sometimes not. Then it turns into calling on road games, or the week Sid has to miss one game because he has a massive half-semester class final to take the next day. Geno wishes him well, and Sid sputters about bad luck.
Geno finds out what happened to Sid's playing career. He morns with Sid about how good Sid was. But it also helps Sid see that he's still good and still has a place in hockey. Sid's acceptance of his place in hockey and his future is also a running theme.
Sid finds out how hard it is for Geno to be away from his family and in a different, nearly hostile world. He does his best to make sure that Geno always has a place to relax. Geno sneaks in to watch Sid coach his kid team. Sid joins Geno on a solo practice that tires his shoulder out but doesn't wreck it. Basically, it's them falling fast and deep in love with each other and not dating.
The Pens AND the Ice Girls get involved at some point. There is a lot of talk about locking them in a closet. There is definitely a Bet going on with both groups. The muttering gets louder after each road game.
'Because Geno is pining. Seriously. Geno. The team is dying; ask him out!'
"Do your teammates a favor and put us out of your misery."
'We mean it, Sid! you've seen how he looks at you!'
**
Meanwhile, the Ice Girls team tries to convince Sid that Geno likes him. It's getting somewhat crazy because Sid also is pining. But he also thinks that gene likes him as a friend. And enjoys the hockey talk. So the PHF destined girl is like, 'bro. if the pens make playoffs – ask him out.' And Sid doesn't want to bet on that for hockey reasons, but hey, he eventually agrees.
**
Near the end of the regular season - when the pens playoff season is in jeopardy, the coaching staff finds out about the missing iPad. They ask around, but no one can figure it where it went.
Geno knows of the iPad by this point (there was an incident in one of the few times Geno was at Sid's apartment, and he saw it and recognized it. They went over game tape after that for a whole afternoon. Nearly cuddling on the couch. Geno likes the iPad.) and lies about it badly.
The coaching staff are suspicious but don't press. The coaching staff has no idea about Sid, not really. And with the last coach being a dick, the players chose to keep Sid away from them. But the team gets sneaky and tries to keep Sid away from them. It works until the very end of the season, and the pens have one last game to make the playoffs.
It works mainly because Sid wants to make it to the NHL coaching staff on his own merit, not on the fact that he accidentally mouthed off to someone and made a friend. And Geno respects that wish, but then the Pens have to win this one game to make the playoffs, and it's one of their last chances. So mid-first period, he talks about a play that he was working with Sid on. And while his wingers were following, as they also spoke to Sid about the play, the Coaching staff were. So confused. But the play works and puts the pens ahead. And then they start talking. And realize they've been missing something.
***
The deciding playoff game. Sid's on the side of the ice, waiting for the game to start. The Ice Girls have finished their pregame work (to great applause. The trick shots and the actual figure skating rather than just sexy dancing has been a great hit.) Sid is Sid, so he goes to his iPad to watch the game when one coaching staff sees him. And starts asking questions. Sid does his best to hide the iPad, and eventually, the guy goes away, but Sid isn't sure.
He wants to talk to Geno after the first period. But Geno isn't there. For the first time in months, none of the pens are waiting for him at the bench. They've left a large gash in the ice for him to fix like they always do, and he's come to enjoy fixing up, but none of them are there. Sid tries not to worry, but he's got some observations, and really that one play he was working with Geno on would be great; the other team won't see it coming. But the pens (mostly Geno!) aren't there.
Typically when they were done with on-ice duties, the Ice Girls had a break room. So Sid won't have anything to do for at least half an hour. The next thing he would have to do was help with some lifts (with his good shoulder) for the Ice Girls, who were former cheerleaders during the next tv time out. He finishes his on-ice cleaning stuff and steps off the ice, intent on heading toward the breakroom to review some of the first-period plays, but he's stopped by one of the coaching staff. The same assistant coach from earlier asked Sid to follow him.
Sid is scared he's about to be fired, again rent. (but this time, at least he knows Geno or Flower or Tanger, or someone would make sure he gets a job somewhere else. he's been building connections!) but the Ice Girls aren't afraid of that, and he gets shoved out the door with the assurance they would handle the rest of the night if need be. So Sid follows the assistant coach. And when he gets to the Room, he's not fired. Instead, he's pulled to the front of a whiteboard, and he's asked if he can explain what the hell Geno was talking about on the bench during the first period?
The coaching staff has no fucking clue, and Geno needs more than him and his wingers to do it. Geno apologizes to Sid for bringing him in, even those he asked not to be, but the play they talked about yesterday would be great then. Geno thinks the other team would not see it coming.
Sid slowly nods, unsure if he believes this is real, trying to figure out how he feels. he goes with surprise but not upset. There is a hockey game to win.
He walks to the whiteboard and draws out the play, explaining where every player needs to be. And then describes how to use the same play but inversed, so either winger could be one-timed if required. The Room takes it like he's just delivered them the playoffs.
And in a way, he did. They score twice using the play. Geno has the gwg. After that intermission, Sid wasn't allowed to go back to the Ice Girls. He's given black sweatpants and pens pullovers and placed with the equipment team. (because he's really not dressed to do anything but skate and move on the ice. Coaches standstill.) He's not officially allowed on the bench because he's not coaching staff, but they ask him things. The Ice Girls grin at him as they work in between periods.
The pens make it to the playoffs by torching the other team (for myself, personally, it's the isles)
After the game, the coaching staff is like, 'Geno, why the hell did you hide him?' Geno's is like, 'Sid wants to earn it on his own time and merit.' The coaching staff is like, 'he just earned it!' 'wait! Is he the reason you've been all be out here?' half the team nods.
So the ownership is informed, and Mario is like, 'so that's where you went' Sid turns red and explains. Mario nodded, understanding hockey is a Very Insular community. Mario looks at the GM with a raised eyebrow. The GM sighs and offers Sid a chance at a contract as an assistant coach.
Sid apologizes to the Ice Girls when he sees them after everything but won't be with them. most of whom are just like 'finally!'
Sid is kind of overwhelmed but pleased. And eventually, Geno takes him back home.
Sid knows that Geno likes him for more than the observations he's got for the game, knows that Geno considers him a friend. And in Geno's ridiculous car, he takes a chance to be brave. He asks Geno out.
Geno says yes so fast.
They actually manage to date during the playoffs. The teams are nauseated but thrilled. They don't make the finals that year, but it comes close. Sid gets to stay behind the bench for all the home games. He can't travel because of school, but everyone is ok with that. The pens intend to hire him full-time as an assistant coach when he graduates.
The Ice Girls go from being a group of people just standing around and just looking sexy and nothing much else to actually performing and using their skills. They worked hard for years on the dance/skating/cheer skills, and the Ice Girls want to make money using them. (also, Side note: by the time Sid is hired, the Pens pay their ice girls so well that none of them need a second job. Typically, this isn't the case, which is fucked up and a whole rant. the Ice Girls getting good pay would also be a running theme of the fic.)
And well, the following year, the pens make it to the finals a week after Sid graduates.
Sid's favorite photo from the Stanley cup parade afterward was one with both him and Geno smiling brightly surrounded by the Ice Girls and both the Isobel and Stanley cups. (Remember the PHF player? Yeah, that would be cool.)
Geno's favorite photo is the one that has him proposing afterward. Sid is smiling so wide and crying. Geno is on one knee. Sid is clearly saying yes.

so @girouxes made me begin to post all my cheesby aus.. so here we go. i’ll guess i’ll start off with one of my longest ones: keep in mind this is unedited and written very casually, and a lot of it is not thought through. warning for typos and weird sentance structures. tw for unhealthy relationships, unhappy-ish ending, it’s a soulbond au thing. also, like, by nature of this blog: mentions of 18+ stuff may happen, think ao3 mature rating.
bonds are fickle, they're unpredictable and you're never quite sure if you're able to bond with someone. it is important to note that bonds are not soulmates and bonds are not predestined: they're a part of human biology, where two or more being have a connection that extends beyond themselves, they form a bond with someone else. this bond strengthens their capabilities, their emotional understanding of each other and has developed as a survival tool for humanity, and our complex relationships.
in modern pop-culture, bonds have become the 'end goal' when it comes to romance, best friends, or even enemies. bonds have become like most things in our world, commercialized and exaggerated by media, they've changed from a survival instinct, to one additional layer of complexity within our society and something to sell and market.
the thing with bonds is that if you bond with someone: it can go away, and it can come back. bonds can be strong, they can can be weak. however, they cannot be one-sided: luckily, a bond requires consent (that is not to say forced bonds doesn't happen, they do, and it's.. yeah. bad)
anyways, within hockey: bonds are fucked up. like, actually fucked up. you remember how i mentioned forced bonds? yeah. obviously, they don't say they're 'forced' but when two teammates can sense each other,, yeah, that's an advantage. there's been attempts to forbid it, but modern hockey relies upon what is known as 'hockey bonds' which are superficial, often 'forced' bonds between teammates (most often, a line or d-man pairs) to help them play better. within hockey, bonds with other players that aren't for playing or with people on other teams.. well, it's highly frowned upon and a lot of time, not allowed.
like. see bonds as a sort of more.. mental connection of friendship and understanding. they can be strong and they can be weak. and this kind of tool in human biology where you can sense / understand others would obvs be abused in many ways, esp in hockey.
so like, a hockey bond is essentially a very superficial bond done between two or more players who has a ’good’ connection but they’re always temporary bonds, and don’t go ’deeper’. as said, bonds have to be consensual in that they need to be accepted by both parts... but when your contract depends upon it, yeah. also like, closer friendship bonds or godforbid romantic bonds between players is taboo, both because of the nhl being Itself as well as the drama that would happen with deperr bonds that can’t be broken with trades and no-trade clauses with bonds is a whole dramatic thing
this is just a vague idea and worldbuilding but it’s more deep nd like complex? anyways so
sidney crosby doesn’t like bonds. or rather, he doesn’t like hockey bonds. it’s the nature, when you’re a kid and you click with someone: they try to make you bond. it worked, a couple of times, but it’s weird being him, being sidney crosby, and seeing that from someone else’s head, where he’s not himself, but he’s the legend, and the unintentional jealousy and fear and pressure of being bonded to him is there. bonding makes them better players, sure, but also sid feels like he’s lost himself, where his thoughts aren’t his own and he’s less and less of sid and more sidney crosby the chosen one, and he’s been dealing with this since he was 16.
people don’t really know what makes it easier for some to bond, and harder for others, but as young, sid’s always gotten it easy to bond: mayhaps that’s been open to it, that it’s hockey, and mayhaps it’s that there’s something about sid being ’sid the kid’ that makes the other players want to bond with him, wants part of his hockey, want part of his legacy, which makes it easy.
that’s the thing with hockey bonds: your hockey becomes entwined with someone else, you aren’t just ’you’ and when you’re the next golden kid of hockey, it’s.. well, it feels like they’re leeches, it feels like they want his glory, his abilities, and a young sid doesn’t like his hockey not being his. he never said he was unselfish. luckily, hockey bonds don't last.
especially not for sid. during his years in rimouski, there’s a lot of bonds: but none that stick.
thank god for that. he doesn’t like being bonded: he doesn’t like having to share with someone else, and he doesn’t like being sidney crosby, the hockey legend in his own head. he just wants to be himself. sidney crosby is strong enough to handle it on his own.
the only bond that sticks is his familial bond with taylor. at this young age, other kinds of bonds haven’t really stuck: not when you’re a playmaker, and you’re constantly pressured to bond with your team.
so, sidney crosby doesn’t like bonds: especially hockey bonds.
then he’s drafted. the thing about being a center, the thing about being a captain (or on his path to become one), about being the centerpiece of your team is that you’re expected to well, bond with the core of your teammates. you are supposed to understand them. supposed to guide them, you’re supposed to be the hivemind: that’s the role most captains play.
sid doesn’t. sid realizes after his first years with the penguins: when he’s been encouraged to bond, and it hasn’t worked, and he hasn’t wanted to, and they win the cup: that well, he’s sidney crosby, he’s got the power to do his thing, to be one of the best players without adhering to the nhl’s system of bonding. in this universe, sidney crosby is not the quiet play-along with the rules guys: he’s out there, and he’s causing a minor revolution, but he’s sidney crosby and he won’t be making a big deal out of it, so it’s fine.
sidney crosby can do whatever the fuck he wants: as long as he plays good hockey. and he does.
there is a plotline here with sid wanting to bond with a couple of his teammates (mainly geno, maybe flower) but not letting himself to do so because bonding has always been a ‘must’, it’s always been something he doesn’t want, it’s always been the part of hockey he doesn’t want to participate, and he knows bonding with any teammate would result in his careful system toppling down upon himself, so he can’t.
there’s another plotline here with bonds being solely for hockey: and other bonds (outside of familial bonds, and romantic bonds with a perfect girl) being frowned down upon, or not really talked about, because when bonds become a part of the sport, your career, when that’s their role, it affects the nature of them.
and yes, this is a big issue within hockey and it is talked about, and awareness is trying to be spread about it, and some players fight back, like, it’s a social issue and a further flaw of the sport and harm of the culture. anyways.
(i know there’s like, like, not right stuff with claude’s history in here, rn i’m too lazy to look it up, but, you should get the gist)
on the other side, we’ve got claude giroux. he never bonded as young: it was never his role, and he never had the prominence for him. there’s always been someone who fit better with someone else, and while claude’s been an important player when he was young, he’s always had his own, independent journey. claude’s not grown up with hockey bonds in the same way a lot of the stars are, where they are grown up to find the perfect partner or the perfect line, and to be the center of the system: claude’s a young playmaker grown up with the rare case of bonds not being shoved down his throat.
this also means claude’s grown up with platonic bonds, friendship bonds: bonds that aren’t related to hockey, bonds that are allowed to be just that, to flourish and grow.
then, he’s drafted by the flyers. the flyers is a messy, violent team: not that claude minds, at all. but it’s also the nhl. and bonds matter. hockey bonds matter a heck lot. there’s been bad blood in the past with bonds within philadelphia, everyone knows this, and everyone knows that there’s always been contention and heat within philly and bonds between the players. this is a sudden culture shift for one claude giroux, but it’s also a claude giroux who forms bonds with someone like danny briere, and who, well, claude’s not a kid who is used with hockey bonds.
hockey bonds are different than normal bonds, that’s just how it is.
there’s not like, a lot of detail thought out here but know this: know that claude’s new, and that flyers have a complicated past with how they bond, and how claude does things his own ways, and forms bonds, and how the flyers begin to find each other during 2007 - 2012, and how claude’s way of bonding spreads through the team, and how it becomes more familial, and reliable, but how it’s.. well. then briere get traded, and that’s the thing with hockey bonds, they need to be broken.
this hurts. this hurts so fucking much. claude doesn’t want to break his bond with danny (and some strange familial bond with his sons, either) but, he has to. that’s the rules. you can’t have bonded players on different teams, that’d destroy the game, make it unfair. and so. for the first time, claude’s gotta break a bond that he’s forged so closely, that hasn’t just become a hockey bond, it has become a bond of strong friendship, of trust, and it’s broken just like that.
there’s probably been other smaller bonds broken and not broken (and the whole thing with sidney crosby but we’re getting into that later) but it’s different. hockey bonds are different. claude quickly learned, for him, they’re something casual: they’re a quick connection you get with someone on the ice, it’s a connection you have with your teammates, but it’s not a connection that goes beyond that. at this moment, claude’s not experienced the true harm of hockey bonds until now: when he realizes that it means the connection, that the part of himself, must be broken.
he hates this. he hates this so fucking much. he hates it even more when people gets traded, when things change, when things start to go downhill, and claude’s starting to realize the way he bonds and the way he is doesn’t work in hockey, it’s not a part of the game: the game doesn’t want this.
it hurts.
anyways, by now i’m sure you’re curious about what’s been going on between sidney and g, and well, it’s complicated. i mentioned it before, but bonds aren’t just friendly. they can be happen between rivals: they can happen with someone you don’t like, and yet, have a connection with. of course, with hockey: rivalry bonds are somewhat common. it would be strange, otherwise, since hockey is.. well, hockey.
rivalry bonds don’t fall under the same category as normal hockey bonds: hockey bonds are meant to help, guide, and assist. it’s believed that rivalry bonds were developed as a need to understand your enemy, to help defeat them: and the thing with rivalry bonds is that they are balanced. this means within hockey, a team-bond of two people on opposite teams is meant to aid and assist in helping each other: a rivalry bond is the opposite of that.
so, of course, rivalry bonds have become an entertainment factor of the nhl, of hockey: rivalry bonds can be temporary, which has happened at times during the olympics between former teammates (this is often so funny, and is definitely one of the best parts of international tournaments), or they can last long. oh, there’s definitely been beef when two people with enemy bonds have gotten traded onto the same team. it can be very funny, but it can also be quite dramatic, but of course, the nhl tries to hide this.
bonds makes trades complicated: that is why permanent bonds aren’t allowed between teammates, or other hockey players. it has happened, and has most definitely caused a lot of internal drama within the nhl.
anyways, so. it’s like, 2008 or 2009 and sidney crosby and claude giroux are facing each other upon the ice. obviously not for the first time. but there’s been something brewing, something of obvious rivalry, and claude can feel the possibility of a rivalry bond between him and sid: and he can sense how explosive their hockey would be against each other, he can taste it upon his tongue, and he can feel it happening but- sid doesn’t want to. sid rejects it. enemy bonds are usually less voluanteery than other bonds, but, sid shuts claude out so quickly. they fight. sort of. basically, there’s a heated moment on the ice and after the ice, where claude questions this, because he enjoys the rivalry, he enjoys the thrill, he knows the potential of a rivalry bond. sid doesn’t want that. they talk outside the game, or well, talk, argue and bicker: and claude learns one thing he’ll never forget: sid doesn’t do bonds.
anyways, most of their early ‘relationship’ is this.. weird tension between them because they both know there’s a rivalry bond there. it could be formed so easily. it has the potential, it could grow, become something that would fuel both of theirs hockey, become a part of them. claude can sense it. sid can sense it. but. sid doesn’t want it, he really doesn’t want it, and bonds can never be one-sided.
the media speculates about this, of course: and sid hates it so fuckin’ much. he wants to play, and he enjoys playing against the flyers, and he enjoys being a brat against claude, but he doesn’t want a bond. he doesn’t do them. he doesn’t need it. his hockey can do good without it. claude gets so fuckin frustrated with sid, not with the fact that he won’t let their bond form, because, he understands that, but with what a brat and fuckin’ idiot sid is.
their relationship is heated, it is strange, it is weird. it is almost like a bond, except they’re not bonded, and instead, there’s some kind of potential that is there between all of their encounters and it affects their interactions, and they don’t quite know where they have each other.
then we get to the playoff series against the pens, in 2012. a rivalry bond forms between them. and claude is so fucking shocked, that sid let this happen, that he can feel the venom, that he can feel the hate, the frustration, and sid can feel it back, but it’s weird, it’s full, it’s got so much fuckin inside it.
their series becomes explosive. their hockey becomes explosive. claude’s got a taste what he’s been feeling for the past years, brewing, and it’s- it’s fucking glorious.
sid feels this too. he hasn’t bonded in so fucking long, and of course, it’s the rivlarly bond with claude, a bond that fuels him, that makes him play like fire- but he’s also scared. he doesn’t want his hockey to depend upon someone else. not now.
after the series is done, it fades away. claude and sid meet, after the flyers get kicked out of the playoffs, they talk, they fight. it’s heated, it’s rough. words bleed out, insults bleed out, their weird fickle relationship and with their strange, fickle, unstable bond between them. “what is this, sid” claude tells him, because, it’s not quite like a bond either of them has felt before. it’s a rivalry bond, but they both can feel so much brewing under the surface.
sid kisses him, heated, violently, and they both can feel the bond spark between them, come alive, rush through them, entwine itself around them, something about how love and hate is close, how it fuels them, but then claude pushes sid away and the bond breaks. it’s quiet.
“not like this.”
sid walks away.
so, we’ve got the next years. anyways. so, claude becomes captain after the lock-out, and claude’s way with bonds and how he thinks and feels about them and all this and his unique view on hockey bonds forms the flyers core going forwards, everyone tightly bonded (beyond what is allowed, but no one needs to know) and every time he meets sidney crosby, their bond flickers. this time it’s claude who doesn’t want it.
you see, sidney realizes a few things during the next years: this is what happens when you grow up. some of these things are realized thanks to claude himself, feeling his bond, feeling how bonds can be, but also, letting himself bond (platonically, not-hockey, in secret with his teammates) and letting himself learn and know what a bond can be and meeting new people and understanding how harmful the nature of hockey bonds is, with a fascination to learn how actual bonds outside of the harmful world of hockey work. thanks to claude giroux, and the world around him.
anyways, claude and sid are quite weird during this time: they both don’t really know what’s going on between them, what their bond is, what bonds are. and during this time, it is sid who wants it, it is him who wants to let claude in but claude- yeah- he doesn’t want to deal with that.
then the world’s happen. short summary of the world’s: they form a bond, but it’s merely a superficial hockey bond and it feels cold and empty and sid hates it, and claude does too, but they can’t let themselves closer, claude can’t let it open up, and they have this weird sort of understanding of each other, pretending it’s way less than it is and of course media catches onto this, and they both become teased over it, and it is- like- yeah, not really fun.
it breaks shortly after the worlds.
what happens next is that the pens win the cup. claude doesn’t know how to feel about this. sid seems happy. he seems joyous.
the next years are weird. they bond sometimes, and then it breaks, because one of them doesn’t want it. it’s like, this weird friends with benefits relationship where their bond bounces back and forth between lust / love / rivalries / friends and,, sometimes they open it, sometimes they close it, but in the end: one of them always don’t want this.
like, i don’t have the rest of plot of this worked out, but it’s essentially exploring the idea of bonds and hockey bonds in the world and how claude and sid are always entwined, and bonded, but how it changes and develops, and how their relationship is always this ‘well, you missed out’ thing and it never quite aligns, and how the harmful world of hockey shapes this, and how they have different understandings of bonds, and how this shapes their relationship, and how it never quite pans out, and how the hockey world developes around this, and how they both bond in different ways, and learn to understand it, and maybe they find each other sometime, maybe they don’t, but it’s exploring the fucked idea of having something as important as bonds tied to hockey and how it fucks with people and how in the end, it ruins claude and sid and their potential together because bonds are so personal and so sensitive and how they work in hockey is so toxic.

please hit me with those headcanons!!! i too fixate on past avatars and would love to hear your thoughts!
me 🤝 you
fixating on past avatars
under the cut <3
Kuruk was definitely a wild child when she was a toddler, so her terrible twos lasted until she was at least 6 or 7
Roku was really shy when he was a child and it somewhat carried over into his adult life so he still has trouble trying to walk up and talk to people at times
Speaking of Roku, he’s a good dancer!! he definitely surprised Ta Min at their wedding and pulled her onto the dance floor
Yangchan was definitely a bisexual demigirl, she definitely didn’t figure that out until really late in life though, probably at like, 90 or so
They all use neopronouns <3
Wan uses: He/Pup/Xe
Szeto: They/Ne
Salai: He/Ve
Yangchan: She/He/Bun
Kuruk: Pup/Paw/E/She
Kyoshi: She/Ae
Roku: He/Kit
Aang: Bun/Kit/He/Fae
Korra: She/It/Ve/Xe/Pup
^^^^ prolly will be using these throughout
Salai!! My boy, even though we barely know anything about him other than his name and that he was either the air avatar before Yangchan or the earth avatar before Kyoshi, I feel like ve would be a good herbalist, the best in the Earth Kingdom actually, ve ended up spending a lot of his time in the medical field and in hospitals almost as much as time he spends traveling around the world being the avatar
I said this multiple times a before and I will continue saying it, Kuruk is a little spoon, e feels safe and loved and protected when she’s the one being held
she prolly also likes being on the bottom
Modern AU Kyoshi and Kuruk once started a riot in a mall once
Nobody knows how or why but they did and the only thing that they learned from it was that they shouldn’t be left alone together, especially in public places
Yangchan had a goth phase all throughout her teenage years
She wore mainly black and dark orange but he also wore yellow and black
Wan was in a relationship with Jaya, the human guy from his lion turtle
After Katara, Tonraq was Korra’s favorite waterbending instructor, so they often bonded through waterbending
The first thing Korra her dad was a flower made out of ice pup made out of ice
Aang knows how to make dresses!! And fae is really good at it
Aang made the dress Katara wore on their wedding night
Roku was prolly the cutest dad when he had his daughter, he was often seen with her whenever he didn’t have important avatar things to do, when she was old enough to walk and run he would sometimes place her on kit’s feet and danced with her
Ta Min also caught them napping together a few dozen times
And by proxy he was a cute grandpa as well
At one point, Szeto had two boyfriends
One of them was from the NWT while the other was from the Earh Kingdom
They ended up breaking up in their late teens, a few years after Szeto started their airbending training
Korra had a crush on Tenzin during it’s airbending training
Korra also had a crush on Katara for the longest time
Roku dated Sid (his earthbending teacher) sometime after Roku mastered the avatar state
They ended up breaking up around the time Roku went to visit Sozin and found out he was gonna start colonizing the other nations
Wan is the shortest avatar after Roku
Kyoshi: 7′1
Aang: 6′9
Yangchan: 6′6
Kuruk: 6′1
Salai: 5′11
Szeto: 5′9
Korra: 5′8
Roku: 5′7
Wan: 5′5
Wan didn’t know that neopronouns existed until xe was banished to the spirit wilds
After pup learned about them, he officially started the trend of the avatar using neopronouns
Aang and Yangchan are the ‘shortest’ airbenders
Salai has a fear of heights but didn’t know about it until he went to the Northern Air Temple for airbending training
Kyoshi had a sister but when they became orphans she ended dying young
At some point Kuruk learned how to knit and crochet
Kuruk made a crochet sweater for her mom when she first started crocheting
Kuruk also made Ummi a knitted sweater that paw made pupself
Korra is in a queerplatonic relationship with Mako
Salai and Szeto are some of the few avatars that got a job outside of being the avatar
Modern AU Aang plays Animal Crossing New Horizons and Minecraft
Modern AU Yangchan plays Pokemon and most Mario games
Szeto knows how to make flowers out of fire
After seeing Tonraq make ice flowers for ver Senna, Korra almost immediately asked Tonraq to teach her so she could them for pup’s friends
Modern AU Korra likes racing games
Roku often gives Ta Min flowers once a week
Kyoshi can’t cook
Ae once burnt down nearly the entire house trying to cook for Rangi cause it was her birthday and ae didn’t want her to cook for herself
They ended up ordering takeout
Kuruk knows how braid hair
Mainly cause e has long hair of her own but also cause she’s the oldest of 7 kids, 5 of which are girls
On the other end of spectrum, Roku is the youngest child
Kit had 6 older sisters and 2 older brothers
Compared to Kit’a siblings, Roku was definitely the shyest and the most quiet one, even in adulthood
Aang was an absolute sweetheart when fae was a toddler, just like how he was a sweetheart in bun’s adulthood
Toddler Aang often made Gyatso pictures, usually of him but sometimes of them playing together
The reason why Korra disliked Asami at first was cause she had a crush on her and didn’t know how to deal with it so she made herself dislike her
Roku was also a sweetheart when kit was a baby!!
Roku often gave her flowers, made her drawings, made her flower crowns (with the help of his father), etc
Yangchan and Kyoshi were pretty chill babies, not much to say here
Wan’s parents died when xe was really young so pup doesn’t know much about them
Salai strongly dislikes tea, the other avatars are baffled by this
Except Korra, she doesn’t like tea either
Kinda goes with my Apartment Complex AU but, Modern AU Roku met Kuruk at the library he works at
Kuruk was there cause paw was trying to find books about mythology cause e were slowly becoming more interested in pup’s old interests again
Ended up working there as Roku’s assistant
these is all i have for now, i hope you enjoyed this wall of text

Zero exams down, six to go.
In the late spring heat, pencils scratch against paper in an otherwise silent classroom. The seconds seem to thud onward, measured by the even tick-tock of the clock on the wall, marking the moments that remain in the first of many final exams. A fan at the back of the class, whirring back and forth, ruffles papers and hair and nerves as it punctuates the pencil-scratching.
At the front of the room sits a blackboard, empty of assignments. It’s almost the end, it seems to say. There’s little left for you here.
In an otherwise nondescript class of students, there are a few standouts. In the front row sits a dirty-blonde whirlwind of a girl in a plaid skirt, equipped with pigtails, a well-stocked mechanical pencil, and raw determination. She scribbles as fast as she can, nose to the paper. The more she writes, the more confident her smile becomes.
To her right sits a less speedy scribbler, a black and white-striped cataclysm of a boy with an impeccably pressed uniform, hand stilling on his paper every time a question stumps him. Occasionally, the tapping of his foot joins in with the pencils and the fan as he plays the off-beat in the final exam symphony. In the back of the class when a piece of paper rips, he flinches just a little.
In the back corner near the door sits another boy, a beryl-blue hurricane, removing each of the corners from his test paper. He has already finished his exam, because he writes the first thing that comes to mind. He believes this makes him wise - a somewhat dubious prospect. If anything, it makes him impulsive. But if you can’t make the right decision on the fly, then what’s the point?, is what he would say.
Finally, in the other back corner sits one final boy, a red-and-white rhapsody, staring out the window with a song in his soul. His test lies forgotten for the moment as he taps out a soft rhythm on the desk, quiet enough for only his ears. His eyes drift around the classroom with affected boredom, though when his gaze lands on the girl in the front row, something stirs behind them.
At this moment, the girl in the front stands to take her test to the front, and she happens to glance his way. She sends him a questioning look, but quickly turns to the front again, breaking the contact.
As he looks back out the window, there’s a flush in his cheeks that has little to do with the heat.
----
One exam down, five to go.
“Dude.  I did so good! ”
They walk in a line, shoulders brushing, necks craned towards the sun. Newly escaped from the heat of the classroom, their shoulders are lighter, the white and blue of their uniforms mirroring the sky.
“Did you answer every question this time?” asks the rhapsody, adjusting the headband in his hair while he squints against the sun.
“Um, yes,” the hurricane says. “Last time I just didn’t because--”
“You got distracted by a  fly ,” says the whirlwind.
“I was on a mission!” he insists, punching his fist in the air. “And I  caught  it!” He holds up his fingers in front of the cataclysm's face, clicking them together like chopsticks.
The other three shake their heads before they all stop in tandem, watching the road ahead wind away from the school.
“You going home?” the girl asks, to no one in particular.
“Nah.”
“Nope.”
“Me neither.”
“... You want some company?”
And so they lie in the grass, as they have many times before.
“Hey, Black*Star?”
The hurricane turns his head, blue hair against green grass. He’s a walking Google Earth. “Yeeees, Maka?”
“What are you doing this summer?”
He turns his head back to the sky. “Dunno yet. Might get a job.” He pauses. “Think your dad is looking for help?”
Her mouth thins into a line. “I don’t know. You can ask him.”
“Awww, c’mon, I don’t wanna talk to---
“And  I  do?” she says, turning onto her side, away from him. “Just get Sid to talk to him for you, then.”
“Sid’s been… busy,” he says. Maka’s expression softens a little in the silence that follows.
“What about you, Kid?” she says, glancing up.
The cataclysm sighs. “I’m sure Father will find something for me to do around the building.”
“Around the school?” Black*Star says. “Gross.”
“I’ve worked here every summer for years,” Kid says, nonplussed. Black*Star looks genuinely surprised and a little guilty.
“Whoops. Guess I blacked it out?” he offers.
“Yeah, probably,” says the final boy, holding a hand up to shield red eyes against the sun as he looks at the group. “That sounds like your worst nightmare.”
Maka pulls out her notebook and starts to doodle, looping letters filling up the page. Eyes trained downward, she asks, with a carefully controlled nonchalance: “How about you, Soul?”
He is no better, still hiding behind his hand, and his response comes out as one word: “Iunno.”
“...Well,” Maka says, plucking herself up to look at them all, now. “I want us to do loads this summer. Adventures and fun and new  experiences ! So you’d all better be ready.”
“Yeah!” Black*Star says, reaching up to high-five her. “We’re gonna take this town by  storm .”
“... Let’s get through exams first?” Kid says, raising his eyebrow at Black*Star as he visibly deflates.
They’ve spent many afternoons like this since they were small, laying outside and letting the grass and wind and sun soothe their worries. A group thrown together by chance, but stuck together by choice.
The words become indented as she traces them in her notebook, over and over again:
I hope things never change. <3
-----------
Two exams down, four to go.
Maka enters the library early, her focus already shifted into science-study mode after the previous day’s final. Already set up, Kid waves her over, and the two of them sit in silence for a while, the flipping of pages occasionally breaking the silence.
Finally, when she glances over at Kid, her eyes land on the book he’s reading.
“You aren’t studying!” she says, surprised.
He has the decency to look a  little  guilty, but not too much. “I felt quite prepared for science, actually, so I’ve started on Socials.”
She pulls the book up to survey the cover. “A History of Reincarnation?”
He pushes the book back down with a little glare at her, though there’s no real annoyance behind it. “I think I’d like to write the essay about this topic, so I’m reading about it again.”
Maka closes her science book. “It’s an interesting topic, isn’t it? What do you think about it?”
He brings a hand to his chin, considering. “Well, the introduction of the concept into psychoanalysis seems to have been a turning point in its study, though I’d say its presence in Hinduism also--”
“No, I mean,” Maka says, because he’s getting on a tangent. He is  very good  at getting on tangents, and she is good at stopping them. “Do you think it could be real?”
Hand retreats from chin to tap on the table. “...Do I believe the soul is immortal, and simply takes on a different form at the end of each life?”
She nods, and his golden eyes survey her, seeming to analyze her expression. “I don’t think we know enough about souls to make a claim,” he says. “But I can’t disprove it, so I suppose it’s possible. ...What do you think?”
Neither of them are sure why there are tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. “I think… that would be amazing. I wonder…” she pauses. “If it’s real, I wonder if souls can find one another, in the next life. I wonder if they meet again and again, and it’s new and different every time.”
He considers this. “If that’s the case, do you think we’d know any better?”
Defensiveness brings her shoulders up to her ears. “I  know  I would.”
He simply nods, because he has the feeling that he knows what this is about, and he knows when to let things lie.
Or does he?
“I guess you couldn’t convince the others to come this morning?” Kid asks her after a moment, eyes fixed back on the page.
“Nope,” she confirms, sufficiently distracted. “Getting Black*Star to wake up at 7:00 on a review day?”
“I thought… Soul might’ve come, though,” Kid says lightly.
“No,” Maka says, shaking her head. “He cares about sleep too much.”
Kid looks up at her, finally.  But there’s something else he cares about more, is what he wants to say.
Because Kid is an astute observer, and today he has made the following observation:
This was a conversation about souls, in every sense of the word.
---------------
Three exams down, three to go.
“I don’t wanna go to class,” Black*Star says, hands extended behind his head as they walk down the hallway. “All we’re doing is review, anyway.”
“Review is important,” Maka says, rolling her eyes. “And you won’t do it on your own, so--”
“This is for Socials, though,” he replies, and suddenly, a little glint appears in his eye that nobody misses. “We should… review for Socials by  being social .”
“That’s not what we’re being tested--”
“I  dare  you,” he says, and the other two boys slow their pace as they look between them, eyebrows raised, as Maka’s eyes narrow.
“You dare me to wh--”
“ Skip  class, miss almost-valedictorian. You won’t do it.”
“You’re right,” she says with a little sniff. “I won’t.”
He stops, rounding on her, and pronounces the lines that he  knows  will work. “You scared?”
“Not scared.” Her voice is cool, but not as aloof as before.
“Scared.”
Her hands ball into fists. “Take it back, Black*Star.”
He grins, because he knows he has won. “Okay, fine.  Catch me  and I will!” And he bursts into action, barreling down the hallway, his laugh bouncing off the walls.
Maka’s quick on his heels, and the other two boys let out a sigh in tandem, hoisting their bags over their shoulders as they resign themselves to  not  reviewing for Socials.
Minutes later, they sit with their backs against painted wood, careful to avoid the splinters, the peeling paint. It’s important to hide, and so they shield themselves around the corner of the shop, away from any prying eyes that could be watching from the schoolyard.
“Wanna bite?” Black*Star says, extending his ice cream so that it almost bumps into her cheek. She glares at him but still gives it a lick, leaning back against the wall and closing her eyes.
The sun on their skin is a salve, weathering away the stress of exams with its warmth.
But there’s a slight tousle in Maka’s hair thanks to the wind, and it feels, strange and scary as it might sound, like  change .
“S’almost time for next class,” Soul says, eyeing Maka out of the corner of his eye.
“... Let’s… just stay?” she says, closing her eyes again.
If Black*Star has opinions about her  wanting  to stay, he keeps them to himself, and in their own small way, they fight against the passing of time with a gentle afternoon in the sun.
Four exams down, two to go.
The music room is another oasis for them; quiet, calm, serene.
Unfortunately, it is an ambiance that is somewhat distorted when Black*Star is pestering Soul about playing the piano.
“Aww c’mon! Just one song?” Black*Star asks, laying on his back on top of the piano as he swings his legs.
“It doesn’t  sound  right when you lay on it like that,” Soul grumbles.
“All right.” Black*Star jumps down, calling his bluff. “All better. Go ahead, then.”
Soul hunches in on himself. It’s an attempt to look defensive, but he just looks defeated. “Don’t wanna.”
“Leave him alone, Black*Star,” Maka says as she lets the door swing shut behind her. “If he doesn’t want to--”
“Don’t  you  wanna hear a song?” he asks her, knocking on the piano top with his wrist so that it echoes.
“I mean.” Maka stops, glancing down at the books in her hand. “I love listening to his music, but--”
“ Love!  ” Black*Star croons. “  Strong words.”
“He…  knows  that,” she says, a fierce flush lighting up her cheeks.
She glances up to see what Soul’s face looks like. It is impossible to discern if he  does  know that, as he has deflated further, head against the piano in embarrassment.
“I’ll… play somethin’,” he says, voice strained against the keys.
Black*Star and Kid exchange a glance.
  They
  are
hopeless , is what they’d like to say.
---------
Five exams down, one to go.
The late afternoon sun slips past the trees, casting tree-branch shadows on Maka’s legs as she props a final textbook on her lap. Much as she’d  like  to study, her gaze keeps getting drawn to the sky, to the puffy clouds that pass, pulling them closer to the end of exams.
It’s a strange time, she thinks. The in-between. They’re in between exams, in between years of school. And it’s both ephemeral and permanent, the in-between. As soon as one thing ends, they’re moving on to something new, but they  always  face it together.
Maybe that’s  why  this is why the four of them thrive as a group: because they exist  best in the in-between. Between their school and home lives, between the moments of anger and laughter, nestled between each other on grassy fields, gazes trained upward.
She loves them all so  much  that it hurts sometimes - they’re all so different, but so similar in their own ways.
But she can still feel it - something  is  changing. It’s  been  changing for a while.
She can feel it when she watches his fingers dance down the piano, when she wants to look at him for a little too long. And she  thinks  that she catches him doing the same thing, sometimes. But she can’t be sure. Daring to hope feels like too tall a task.
The book slides through her hands and onto the ground; she can’t study when her mind is all over the place.
Instead she stands, and walks toward another field in the distance in an attempt to leave her thoughts behind.
“Wait!” Black*Star’s voice booms in the distance. “We’re coming too!”
The sunflowers aren’t blooming just yet, which gives them enough room to walk through the stalks without feeling too closed in. Maka reaches her hand out to touch the flowers as they pass, velvety stems bringing her a sense of calm, of familiarity. They’ve journeyed to this field more times than she can count; it is a home of little time capsules and hide and seek games, forever a prequel to the scene of coming home and dumping soil out of their shoes.
Suddenly, with a startling amount of vigor, she wants to hold  on to this moment. No need for their last exams, for the unpredictability of summer. She wants to be right here, in their sunflower sea. Just beneath the surface of the world, with the people she loves most.
“Hey.” she says, reaching out with her voice. She’s not sure how close they are, but she knows they will hear her. “Hide and seek? I’ll be it.”
There’s a rumble of assent from various places in the field, and off she goes to find them.
Through the maze she walks, listening for crackles in the underbrush, for clothes catching on sunflower bristles.
She sees him first; catches a glimpse of white between the branches. When their eyes meet, she presses a finger to her lips, splitting a bashful smile down the middle. He’s frozen in place, dumbstruck as she points to his left and then to herself, then slips away again into the brush.
His hand reaches after her of its own accord, hanging in the air.
Would you let me follow if I asked?  is what he’s dying to say.
----------------------
Six exams down, zero to go.
As Maka leaves the classroom, the wind seems to rush past her with an emotional sort of finality, and it’s exhilarating.
Until she realizes that that wind is very literal, spun into a frenzy by a hurricane.
“Black*Star, stop running again!  ” Maka starts to yell after him. “Don’t get in trouble on the last day of-- ”
Another burst of wind flies by her, and her eyes arc toward the ceiling.  “Not you too!” she yells after Soul, who is laughing, running up to give Black*Star a high five.
They’re always egging each other on, she thinks. That’ll never change. But try as she might, she can’t fight the next thought that appears in her head, unbidden:
It’s a nice change to see him smile, isn’t it?
Just in front of her, Kid turns back to her and asks something that sets her nerves on edge:
“Maka. Can we talk outside for a moment?”
---------------
  And onward.
“I’m leaving,” Kid says, sitting across from her on grass, and ice abruptly enters her heart.
“...Just for the summer,” he amends, because the panic in her eyes is palpable. “Apologies. That wasn’t very tactful, I guess.”
Ice thaws quickly when fire is applied. “ Why? ” Maka says, indignant. “But we had plans, where are you--”
“Father got put in charge of another school for the summer,” he says with a little shrug. “I’m going too. He needs help in the library.”
She wants to pout, but she also doesn’t want to act like a child.
“I wanted us all to be together this summer,” she says softly, hand on her notebook, where wishes from sunny days past are etched.
“... I know,” he says. “I know you don’t like… change.”
The wind whistles through the trees, making her pigtails flutter.
“But,” he continues. “ I  was thinking. Since things are already about to change, you could change things  more . If you wanted to.”
She’s confused, and she knows he’s trying to give her some sort of clue, eyes boring into her just a little impatiently. When she doesn’t give him visual confirmation, he sighs, rubbing the line between his eyebrows with a finger.
“What I’m trying to say is, you could sit here with me on this grass like we’ve always done.” He levels her with a look. “Or you could go up there, and  change  something that you’ve been wanting to change for a while.”
She follows the direction of his hand, the wind making the tree branch shadows dance on his extended finger, and she  knows  where it leads.
He’s pointing at the window to the music room.
-------------------
And onward.
If there’s one thing Maka knows, it is how to be brave. It’s not something conscious -- it’s something that lives in her  essence , that has been with her since the beginning of her life. Maybe in other lives, too.
And it is this entrenched, beautiful, cosmic bravery that leads her up the stairs to burst into the music room to interrupt a rhapsody, who stares at her from the piano with a peculiar new song in his soul.
She’s breathless from the run, leaning into the door as it shuts behind her.
He’s breathless because she’s never looked at him quite that way before.
The late afternoon sun filters in through the curtains, spilling across the desks, the musical instruments. Dust motes float on the beams, catching sunlight as they pass.
“...Here,” she says, moving towards the window. “Can you… come over here for a second?”
“Y-yeah.” He stands, edges towards her. Beside the window, the curtains flutter around them, whipped into a frenzy by a whirlwind.
“I don’t… like change,” Maka says.
He nods. He’s known that as long and as  well  as he’s known her.
She takes a step toward him, and it sends heat straight to his toes. “But I’d like to change… something. Okay?”
There’s a flush in  her  cheeks, now, that has little to do with the heat.
“Okay,” he says, but it comes out as a whisper.
“Just… just tell me if--” She takes another step towards him, and he forgets to breathe as he watches the space between her eyebrows bunch together, sunlight catching on her eyelashes. “If anything isn’t--”
A shaky laugh escapes him.  Doesn’t she know he’d follow her anywhere? “Yeah, okay. I’ll tell you.”
She doesn’t know if souls can remember one other, from one life to the next. But she’s determined that in this existence, in this  universe , she will make sure that this, a tenuous connection between two souls, it’s something new and different and beautiful.
And so, with this in mind, she closes her eyes, closes the  space  between them, and the dust motes burst into galaxies.
