A list of underrated Christmas movies for everyone who is getting tired of watching the same things every year:
This year, I wanted to make a list of a few Christmas movies that I feel are a bit underrated and under-appreciated, because I’m tired of seeing the same things all the time. If anyone has any suggestions for their own lesser known holiday movies, please feel free to include them!
Arthur Christmas: An animated movie that should be a classic, but it was unfortunately lost to time because it had a horrible marketing campaign that made it look like complete shit. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s not complete shit. It’s actually fucking amazing.
Arthur, the clumsy son of the current Santa Claus is known for being a lovable idiot who tends to ruin everything he touches, but when a little girl’s present is accidentally left behind one Christmas, Arthur, an elf named Bryony, and his grandfather (a previous Santa…so grandsanta) embark on a chaotic mission around the world to deliver the missing present. Every character in this movie is so fucking funny and empathetic at the same time. Arthur embodies the true meaning of Christmas in everything he does. Bryony is just…on another level entirely. Arthur’s brother Steve (a strategic genius who wants to use his new technology to ensure his place as the next Santa) is a perfect antagonist that the audience still feels sympathy for. They all just have such a fun dynamic, and it’s a crime that more people haven’t seen this.
Tumblr media
Spirited: A fairly new addition to the Christmas movie ranks, since it came out in 2022 (but it was on AppleTV+ so no one watched it). Spirited is a modern, musical version of A Christmas Carol like you’ve never seen before (starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, who are an amazing combination in anything). If you’re tired of seeing endless retellings of Dickens' story, just watch this. It’s hilarious, heartfelt, and it brings a whole new perspective to the story in a way that I’m not going to spoil. And the songs go so hard it’s insane.
Tumblr media
Happiest Season: A rom-com in which a woman named Abby desperately wants to propose to her girlfriend Harper over the holidays during Harper’s family Christmas party…only to realize that Harper’s extremely rich and conservative family doesn’t know she’s gay. Fun rom-com shenanigans ensue. Did I mention Abby is played by Kristen Stewart, and Harper is played by Mackenzie Davis? Also Aubrey Plaza, Alison Brie, and that guy from Schitt’s Creek everyone loves are in it.
This could easily have been a completely different movie if the cast wasn't so funny and didn’t have such good chemistry. It starts out as a standard holiday rom-com, but I was tearing up by the end of this the first time I watched it. If you’ve ever felt like you’ve been hiding your true self from your family or if you’ve felt like you’ve never been good enough for them, I think you’ll see a lot to relate to in this.
Tumblr media
Violent Night: Another new addition to the ever-expanding list of Christmas movies, this aptly named action thriller also came out in 2022, and I feel like no one has spoken about it since, which is a crime because IT WAS SO MUCH FUCKING FUN!
When a grizzled, down on the world Santa (played by David Harbour) gets stuck in a rich family’s house while it’s being overrun by mercenaries, he has to Die Hard his way out and save the hostages (or at least the ones who are worth saving) before it’s too late. This was such a fun surprise, because violent action thrillers are so hit and miss for me personally. David Harbour is great. It’s just under 2 hours of watching shitty people get their comeuppance in unique ways. I’m so offended that it only has a 6.7/10 on IMDB, because this is a great movie to watch with a group of friends and some age appropriate beverages. Yeah, it’s not a masterpiece, and maybe my standards are low, but I had a great time with this.
Tumblr media
Tokyo Godfathers: An anime Christmas classic directed by Satoshi Kon in which 3 homeless people (a former drag queen, a runaway teen, and a grumpy alcoholic) find a baby in a dumpster and try to reunite it with its family. This was the movie that tricked me into thinking Satoshi Kon’s other works would be just as comedic and wholesome as this one. It’s got humor. It’s got heart. It’s got twists and turns that will keep you guessing in the classic Satoshi Kon fashion. And the English dub is just as good as the sub, so you can’t go wrong either way.
Tumblr media
Neo Yokio- Pink Christmas: Speaking of anime…I’ve talked about this one before, but I have to mention it again because it’s a staple for me every year. Pink Christmas is the Christmas special for the…anime (and I use that word in the loosest way possible) Neo Yokio…aka the one starring (and possibly made by?) Jaden Smith.
For anyone who’s never heard of it, Neo Yokio is a series on Netflix that is the closest thing to a professionally made Abridged Series we’ll ever have. The “plot” of the series revolves around Kaz, a pink haired guy who fights demons and does increasingly absurd rich people things with his robot mecha butler named Charles. The Christmas special involves Charles telling Kaz a Christmas story about the city’s Secret Santa competition for all the ultra rich people.
Look, there’s no good way to describe this one, but trust me when I say you don’t have to watch Neo Yokio to understand it, since even people who do watch Neo Yokio don’t understand it. In fact, I think it will be even funnier if you don’t watch Neo Yokio at all before watching Pink Christmas (but I encourage everyone to watch the series too, just because it’s more of the same insanity.)
Every line in it is pure comedic gold, not because it’s truly funny, but because it’s absurd and ridiculous in a way only Jaden Smith can be. I quote it incessantly while eating a Toblerone every year.
Tumblr media
Cabin Pressure at Christmas: Molokai: Okay, it’s not a movie or even a TV special, but I love Cabin Pressure so much that I had to include this too. Cabin Pressure is a comedy radio show (not a podcast, an actual radio show) that aired on BBC Radio 4 in the early 2000s about an airline crew for the world’s shittiest airplane.
For anyone who watched season 2 of Good Omens, you might recognize the name John Finnemore as one of the writers. Well, Cabin Pressure is made by (and stars) the same person. The Christmas episode is one of my favorites of the series, and you 100% don’t need to listen to the entire series to enjoy it. It captures the humor and despair of being stuck with your co-workers on Christmas eve, but it keeps up the spirit regardless. This is another one I quote incessantly, and the whole show has become hardwired into my personality. PLEASE FIND A WAY TO LISTEN TO CABIN PRESSURE! I’m pretty sure the whole series is available on iTunes as an audiobook.
Tumblr media
As honorable mentions, I want to include Rise of the Guardians and Klaus, because even though they have a fair amount of popularity, I still feel like people could appreciate them more. And sure, Rise of the Guardians might be more of an Easter movie, but it still includes Santa as a character, and he’s amazing.
That's all for now. Sorry these are all specifically Christmas themed, but if anyone has movie suggestions for other winter holidays, please throw them in!

The 100 Favorite Movies Challege
As a huge movie buff, I thought I'd try something fun on here. I have decided to launch a new internet challenge: "The 100 Favorite Movies Challenge". The rules are pretty simple and straight forward. You create a list of 100 of your personal favorite movies in alphabetical order, post the list on your home page, then nominate other people/users of your choosing to do the challenge.
There is no limit to what movies can be included on your list. Films within any medium (live action or animated), genre, and decade are more than welcome. Movie ask: 1990
Mind you, I was four at the time, and ho boy are there a lot of important sequels from that year! With that, thoughts:
Children's Films
Back to the Future, Part III: I haven't seen any of these films, but I think (especially in the post-Rick and Morty era) that it's mandatory to suggest them. I dunno. Thankfully, this isn't the one that weirdly seems to allude to Trump running for president in 2016.
Home Alone: Extremely wealthy kid (who doesn't want to participate in the family Christmas festivities due to awful relatives) gets left at home by accident while his family flies...somewhere (internationally, I think]); Joe Pesci manages to make time in his busy filming schedule (Goodfellas came out the same year) to try to rob the kid with accomplice Daniel Stern. Trap-based hijinx ensue. I remember loving this movie as a kid (seen a couple of years later), but everyone else complaining about it since like 1999.
The Neverending Story II: I HATED THIS MOVIE. The only thing I remember about it is that the main character, for some reason, keeps making wishes and this evil witch's over-the-top gumball dispenser steals his memories (contained in gumball-like crystal balls). No thank you.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: I was not a fan of TMNT as a kid (I complained about how everyone else was) and do not like furries of any kind (I think the aesthetic is stupid), but these movies were kinda good for what they were.
The Witches: You know that adaptation of the Roald Dahl book with the ugly, child-eating witches? This is the one.
Adult Films
Cinema Paradiso: This was listed on the page for American films despite 1.) being Italian and 2.) coming out in 1988. I'm leaving it here because I remember liking it (though nothing else about it) and probably have a higher opinion of it than anything else on the list.
Die Hard 2: I know I've seen it, but I don't remember anything about it besides "boorish action/guy film."
Dreams: I figure if it's an Akira Kurosawa film and it's magical realism, then I should probably go watch it.
Edward Scissorhands: I had heard of this movie looooong before I ever had the opportunity to watch it, which was at a teen lock-in thing at the library. I didn't end up watching it, if that tells you anything. I mean, why? How do you stop from accidentally killing yourself every five seconds?
La Femme Nikita: I have never watched it. However, growing up (as in, years later), the title was everywhere -- for no reason I ever understood or had explained to me. Kids would mention it without context. This makes me feel like it's somehow important pop-culturally, but I have no idea why. Because I didn't know what "Nikita" meant as a child and because the title was in French, I figured it had to do with assassination; I have no idea how I drew that conclusion (beyond "na-keed-duh" sounding vaguely like "killer" with an odd accent to my six-year-old ear). As it turns out, I was right that she's an assassin. +1 Coolness Point to me for oracular knowledge.
Goodfellas and The Godfather, Part III: The two ends of cynicism vs. romanticism re: Italian-American organized crime. If only I were @theoutcastrogue and cared about mobsters.
Predator 2: I REMEMBER THIS ONE! This one is the one after the one with Ahnold; it's set in LA and is another pro-cop/male power fantasy action flick, despite/because they are in over their heads against the Predator.
Tremors: Though I have no reason to watch it, the rest of the movies in the series, or the show, I feel obligated to recommend this in light of the Dune movies. Tremors is a pastiche of Dune; it's set in the desert town of Perfection, Nevada, where there be burrowing sand monsters that are a dangerous menace to everyone. This is somehow a comedy. The later installments add the bit that the creatures are endangered and so, despite being a threat to humans, are not to be killed.

An Assortment of Post-Series Lucy and Eddie Winter/Christmas Fluff
Tumblr media
A/N: I’ve been too busy with work and life to finish a full fic in time for the holidays, but I can at least do this
I’m going to be very clear from the jump: Eddie loves Christmas
Yes, growing up he never did the big Christmas bash but Wayne would always make sure he had the day off and tried to make it nice if not special
Eddie got his first guitar on Christmas and it’s still one of the best memories he has
Meanwhile the Hendersons were always WAY into Christmas
We’re talking coco, we’re taking Christmas music on repeat for the entire month of December, cookies, ugly sweaters, the works
So when Lucy and Eddie spend their first Christmas together in their own apartment in Chicago, they don’t hold back
At first Lucy was a bit nervous, not entirely sure what Eddie’s feelings were on the subject, but then the second December 1st rolled around he started talking about how they were going to get a tree up three flights of stairs and Lucy knew it was going to be alright
Both go in for the stupidest Christmas nik naks they can fine
If it makes one of them laugh and is vaguely Christmas related, it’s going in the cart
Live trees only; Eddie packed it in the van and left a trail of pine needles up three flights of stairs but they got a real tree
Lucy’s mom also made sure to ship up a box full of ordainments they had collected over the years to Chicago to make sure Lucy and Eddie didn’t have a bare tree
It’s not a picturesque tree with matching bulbs and lights but a random assortment of ornaments bought on impulse and added to the pile along side rainbow lights
Honestly a perfect sun up of their type of Christmas
Go to Christmas movies
Lucy convinced Eddie to finally watch It’s a Wonderful Life all the way through the first year they met and now it’s a staple
Eddie and Wayne already watched 3 Godfathers (1948) as a rule growing up as well as Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas
Gremlins and A Christmas Story also became part of Eddie’s rotation
Lucy meanwhile adds Shop Around the Corner, Christmas In Connecticut, Miracle on 34th Street and Alistair Sim’s A Christmas Carol to the list
Side note, when A Muppet Christmas Carol came out in 92 it became Eddie’s favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol and remains a point of contention between the two of them
Also I needs be said, Eddie cannot stand any of the Rankin/Bass films, especially Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer
Lucy meanwhile thinks they’re adorable causing a many an argument every time Christmas rolls around
Another Christmas movie argument they have is when Die Hard came out in 89
Eddie is team Die Hard is a Christmas movie while Lucy is against it
He made a power point presentation on the subject. It was more effort he put into an argument then any group assignment he had in high school
Lucy’s go too favorite Christmas drink is hot coco with a peppermint stick
Eddie has an eggnog recipe he got from Wayne and he still contends it’s the best he ever tasted (Lucy is inclined to agree)
When Eddie and Lucy host Christmas they have a strict dress code, namely ugly sweaters, if you don’t have one, one will be provided for you
Lucy has made sweaters for all of her friends at some point (Eddie now has several he’s worn into the dirt)
Needs also be said that Eddie hates the cold, which makes winters in Chicago particularly difficult
If he had his way he and Lucy would hibernate all through the winter
This makes getting up in the morning an up hill battle since Eddie makes it his mission to snuggle under the blankets with Lucy for as long as physically possible
Lucy is a ruthless snow ball fighter
She’s got great upper body strength and one hell of an aim making her deadly to have on one’s team
She also really gets into it and is ready with an evil villain monologue if provoked
Meanwhile Eddie as mentioned before hates the cold making his endurance level pretty low even if he’s gotten very good at not getting hit
He doesn’t join snowball fights in general unless peer pressured into it (namely Dustin and Steve)
That all being said he is invaluable in getting Lucy off the field
All he has to do is say something along the lines of “I’m packing it in early, I’m cold” 🥺 while flashing his big doe eyes at Lucy and she’s off to snuggle with her boyfriend much to her team’s distress
Nancy has given her more than one pep talk to try and counteract the effect, but it’s useless; pretty boys with big brown eyes for Lucy acting all types of stupid
Overall the month of December is chaotic and exhausting but always fun and full of love

Movies You Don’t Think Of As Christmas Movies (revised and updated for 2022)
Yeah, yeah, It's A Wonderful White Christmas Carol Story On 34th Street instantly springs to mind whenever somebody says "Christmas Movie" but here are a few you should give thought to as alternative programming for the season.
 L.A. Confidential
The movie opens with a renegade LA cop going through his naughty list then spreading a little holiday cheer in a liquor store before answering the musical question, “Does the LAPD knows how to throw a Christmas party or what?”
Die Hard / Lethal Weapon / Gremlins
Oh, yeah, like you didn’t see these coming…
 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
The only James Bond movie with a Christmas song.
 Hell’s Heroes
Hell's Heroes is the first sound version of The Three Godfathers, most famously filmed in 1948 with John Wayne.  Based on the novel by Peter B. Kyne, Three Godfathers has been filmed officially six times (2 silent versions, 3 talkies, 1 TV movie) and unofficially more than can be counted (see below).  Hell's Heroes is my favorite take on the tale, a story of three doomed desperadoes who sacrifice themselves to bring an infant to safety across the trackless desert.
 Tokyo Godfathers
So how in the world does a novel set in the American West translate into an animated feature set in 21st century Tokyo?  Very well, thank you.  The time and setting and characters have changed but it remains essentially the same story:  The desperate, the doomed, and the damned prove their humanity by saving an infant on Christmas Eve.  Highly recommended.
 The Junky’s Christmas
Now, I know what you're thinking: You're thinking "Buzz has finally lost his pea-pickin' mind.  A story about a petty criminal drug addict trying to score a fix is his idea of a Christmas story?!?!?"
As a failed veep candidate would say:  "Hew betcha."  'Cuz The Junky's Christmas is William S. Burrough's meditation on the act of compassion even when it runs contrary to one's own self-interest.  It's the story of a jonesin' user who has the choice of feeding his addiction or helping a total stranger who needs his fix even more than he does.  Read the original short story, then watch the marvelous animated puppet film.
 Christmas On Mars
No, this is the film where I finally lose my pea-pickin' mind.  Christmas On Mars is an indie sci-fi feature by the Oklahoma alt rock band, The Flaming Lips.  It's a clever, well made, intelligent, thoughtful, and ultimately uplifting tale of human colonists on Mars just trying to get through their daily routines without collapsing into despair and depression.
I recommend Christmas On Mars highly, but if you are among my many friends who are easily offended (and remember, if I think something might be a little iffy you can guess how far on beyond zebra it must be) take heed:  The aliens are modeled on something that's incredibly NSFW.  Santa Claus Conquers The Martiansthis ain't...
 Tangerine
A story of two transgender Hollywood street hustlers on Christmas Eve, with everything you could want in a holiday film:  Inventively obscene language, rampant prostitution, startling displays of nudity, and horrifying-yet-hilarious street violence.
And compassion.
And loyalty.
And love.
For several characters, their Christmas ends in heartbreaking despair brought about by their own weaknesses and failings, yet in the end Tangerine focuses on the two hustlers mutual support providing them joy and peace that none of the others can know.

RED VALLEY: WHILE YOU WERE HYPERSLEEPING‘Part Four’
[transcript]
SCENE 1
THE CRYOSUITE. GORDON BUSTLES IN WITH A BOX UNDER HIS ARM.
GORDON: Eyyy! It's only bloody Christmas Eve! Hi Warren. Thought I'd come down and spend some of the evening with you.
GORDON MAKES A FUSS OF SITTING HIMSELF DOWN AND RUMMAGING IN HIS BOX NEXT TO HIM.
GORDON: I had a poke around in the cupboards and found some Christmas shit. There's a little 8 inch silver Christmas tree here made of tinsel. Look… you can have that. Oh… And speaking of tinsel...yikes.
GORDON PULLS TINSEL OUT OF THE BOX, STANDS UP AND DRAPES IT OVER THE POD.
GORDON: There. That fits quite nicely. Oh… Right - the piece of resistance...music.
GORDON PULLS OUT A TAPE RECORDER AND A TAPE.
GORDON: This is 'O Little Town of Bethmayhem', one of Pus Crank’s festive rock medleys. They were a regular fixture at the annual Unholy Night Christmas all-dayer at the club in my hometown. Ah… You would've loved it.
HE LETS THE MUSIC PLAY FOR A MOMENT.
GORDON: So, you look good. I mean your pod looks good. The bleep bloops sound happy. This pod is far more advanced than the ones used on other subjects that I've seen or read about. It's much smaller. More, uh, coffin-sized. Like umm, Spock's coffin in Wrath of Khan. It would fit nicely into a photon torpedo chute, I think? It's fully portable… apparently. They told me it can run on battery power for 100 years, Lightweight alloy, the wheelspop out the bottom if I press the unlock-
HE PRESSES IT. THE HISS OF HYDRAULICS AND A LITTLE BLEEPING ALARM AS THE POD UNLOCKS AND RELEASES IT'S WHEELS.
GORDON: Oh shit. Ah no, Shit. Lock. Lock. Lock. Lock. Lock.
IT HISSES BACK DOWN AGAIN.
GORDON: Christ.
PAUSE.
GORDON: Anyway. Tis the season, so thought I'd make this a themed visit. You had a Christmas here, Warren. Maybe not all that different to mine. Let’s see how that went shall we. Here's your Ghost of Christmas Past. We're Warren and Gordon, woooooooooo!
HE TURNS OFF THE MUSIC AND HITS PLAY ON HIS OWN TAPE RECORDER. WARREN IS MAKING HIS WAY THROUGH THE MESS ROOM ON CHRISTMAS EVE, 2018.
WARREN: Ding dong merrily on high. I’m making a recording. Youjoin me here at Red Valley, area of outstanding natural misery, National Heritage site of historical tedium, on Christmas Eve. At least, I think it's Christmas Eve. There aren't many indicators out here, I'm just going off a very small desk calendar from the office. Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer still won't even tell me their names, much less the actual date. Even now, when it's just me and them, they tap their little Overhead barcode ID badge and tell me it’s not my concern.
WARREN: I digress. It's bloody Christmas Eve, allegedly! It's 10:45 in the evening and this is Warren Godby, coming live from the Red Valley mess room with a warm bottle of dessert wine, seeing in the birthday of our lord and saviour by treating myself to a Christmas movie. Well, perhaps not an actual bona fide Christmas movie per se, because the collection here appears to contain no discernible festive...oh wait… Jingle All The Way. Two? Jingle All The Way Two? Who made a sequel to Jingle All The - WWE Studios? What the fuck is this?
HE FRISBEES IT.
WARREN: Actually, this DVD collection appears to have been lifted wholesale from Second Time Around. I think every second-hand place has more or less the same collection. Romcoms with red titles on white backgrounds, yes...not one but two copies of The Day After Tomorrow, yes...ex rental copy of The Passion of the Christ, never saw it, save it for Easter...Ah...the unwanted garbage sequel category...Godfather 3, Die Hard 5, Terminator: Genisys, ugh, Prometheus...come on...oh, wait, A Christmas Carol. Oh for fuck sake, CGI Jim Carrey version! Is it too much to ask for a muppet?
THROWS IT BACK.
CUT TO: TIME HAS PASSED. WARREN IS ON THE SOFA.
WARREN: So… Rodrigo didn't make it out of the final test on Tuesday. I came out first, I was in the recovery bay when whatever happened happened. They won't tell me what took place of course. But he's definitely dead. Saw Rumpleteazer mopping up the corridor afterwards. Not as bad as with Ryan, er… they were sponging down the cryosuite for half a day after whatever they did to him. Was he...when was that, was he… was he … was hethird or fourth to go? Why can't I remember that?
WARREN: I thought Rodrigo was going to win. He was young, barely mid-20s, pretty fit. Massive thighs. He was an addict, I knew that much. That was probably it. Still I… I thought he'd last longer than me.
WARREN: I don't really know what happens now. Just Mungojerrie left to tend to the place over the festive season, must've drawn the short straw. Halbech and Rumpleteazer disappeared a couple of days ago. They left in a truck instead of getting picked up by the usual helicopter.Bunch of Overhead roadies jumped out, packed up a lot of stuff this time. Definitely get the feeling that things are wrapping up round here. Jerrie’s in the farmhouse… don't know what he's up to. All looks cosy from here.
WARREN: It's not my first Christmas alone. I actually prefer them that way. Infinitely superior to the holidays I used to have growing up. Boo hoo… Woe is me, getting maudlin. Anyway, I expect whatever the next test is, it'll be the last one. So, let’s make the most of the night. Maybe I'll give Prometheus another shot. How bad can it be. Toodle pip.
CUT FOR THAT ENTRY, BUT THE TAPE ROLLS ON.
GORDON: Well, that wasn't quite the festive cheer I was hoping for, but hey, you're the one who-
WARREN CUTS IN.
WARREN: Oh my god. Oh my god. What was I thinking? Why...why was Guy Pearce even in that movie, why wouldn't you just hire an old person to play an old person...why did they run away from the doughnut spaceship when it was falling over in that direction, if they just turned 90 degrees and they wouldn’t have... forget it. Fine, Let’s do it, CGI Christmas Carol. Goodnight.
PAUSE.
GORDON: Okay. Do we think you're finished or-
BLUE SKY: Sorry, are you talking to me?
GORDON: No, I'm not talking to you. We're still not tal-
WARREN: Why would Robert Zemeckis dedicate so much time to making so many films about creepy dead eyed PlayStation characters? Why? What do you gain? Creepy android Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge, if Michael Caine was here, he'd step on your fucking neck-
CUT.
BLUE SKY: I'm sorry, I didn't catch that.
GORDON: Warren doesn't enjoy the motion capture period of the director Robert Zemeckis.
BLUE SKY: Robert Zemeckis is a film director who came to promi-
GORDON: I know!
WARREN: Who asked for more Die Hards? Who the fuck is Jai Courtney? No one knows!
GORDON: I'm sure I had some kind of plan for the Ghost of Christmas Present section of all this, but I've completely forgotten it.
WARREN: He’s here. He's in Terminator: Genisys as well! Who the fuck is this guy? How is he playing the son of John McClane and Kyle Reese-
BLUE SKY: Jai Courtney is an Australian actor-
GORDON: Oh my god! Everyone stop talking!
THE TAPE STOPS.
GORDON: Jesus. Well, this was remarkably similar to a family Christmas at my parents’ house, so thanks for that little triggering episode. I think I need some freezing cold air.
GORDON GETS UP TO LEAVE.
GORDON: Oh! Wait! I forgot the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come! Bit of a reach this but it's the best I could do in these uncertain times. A voicemail I got last night.
GORDON HITS VOICEMAIL ON HIS PHONE AND TURNS THE SPEAKER UP LOUD.
VOICEMAIL: Message received at 23:40 p.m. on Monday the 23rd of December.
A PARTY, IN A PUB MAYBE. CLIVE SCHILL, DRUNK, TO THE MELODY OF SILENT NIGHT:
CLIVE: Gordon night, Porlock night, Fuck this up, I'll set you on fire, alight, that's better, I'll set you alight.
CLIVE DROPS HIS PHONE.
VOICEMAIL: Next message received yesterday at 23:43 p.m. on Monday the 23rd of December.
CLIVE: Away in a Gordon, a dick on his head, the little lord Gordon is such a dickhead, I'll be coming in January to see how you are, if you've messed up anything I'll hit you with my car. I'll actually be coming in a helicopter though. A hel-ee-cop-tahh. Merry Christmas bitch, see you soon, love to Warren, kisses, what a dick. Oh hello darling, sorry Daddy was just making a phone call to one of his special frien-
GORDON TURNS OFF THE VOICEMAIL, AND SPENDS A MOMENT CHANGING THE TAPE BACK TO PUS CRANK.
GORDON: So that's something to look forward to, isn't it. I'll leave the music with you for a while. Look… I'll be back tomorrow, we can sing some carols or something. Merry Christmas, Warren.
HE TURNS PUS CRANK BACK UP AND WALKS AWAY.
CUT TO:OUTSIDE THE STATION. IT'S DARK, EVENING. LITTLE BREEZE, JUST SNOW FALLING SOFTLY. GORDON HAS LIT A BONFIRE. IT CRACKLES AS HE STANDS BY IT, STAMPING HIS FEET TRYING TO WARM UP.
GORDON: Personal log. It’s Christmas Eve. Oh, no, it’s it's actually Christmas Day now. I lit a fire with the left over wood. Thought it would be a problem with the snow falling but I tossed the dregs of some anaesthetic vapour over it. Nearly took my bloody eyebrows off.
THE FIRE CRACKLES AS GORDON THINKS.
GORDON: Don't know what I was thinking expecting anything cheerful to come from Warren's Christmas Eve. Bit of blind festive optimism I suppose. Anyway, that was actually his last tape. So, I know what happened next. They went for the big one, they put him under properly. Just like he is now. You know… I haven't really talked about what happened that first night here. Bryony let me watch it all. And I did, I stood there and I watched. They put him under general anaesthetic, put a tube in his mouth to ventilate him, started putting all these lines in his arteries and veins. They put gunk in his eyes to protect them and covered them up with goggles. They gave him an infusion to bring down his core temperature.
GORDON: Then… they transferred him into that pod, the giant cigar tube. No one was concerned. Except me. The pod then filled with water, or what looked like water. You could feel the cold coming off it. They let me touch it. It's like er… jelly. And all the time his heart is slowing, all the beeps are dropping in tone and pace and it looked like no one wanted to help, that they were just going to watch him… die.
GORDON: And then it all went quiet. And then the most absurd little ring tone noise, like when Sonic gets an extra life or something. And he was...hypersleeping. And I went to my new bedroom and had a panic attack. So... er, yeah… there we go! A little taste of life at Red Valley.
GORDON COMES OUT OF HIS THOUGHTS AND STEPS BACK FROM THE FIRE, GOING TO PICK UP A FIRE EXTINGUISHER HE BROUGHT WITH HIM.
GORDON: The fire’s gone down now. I could let the snow put it out but it’s much more fun using the fire extinguisher, never used one in the real world, but here I use it all the time.
WITH A LOUD HISS GORDON LETS RIP, PUTTING OUT THE FIRE IN A FEW SECONDS.
GORDON: Yippee ki yay Mother Hubbard! THE FIRE HISSES AS IT DIES.GORDON: There is something to being out here all alone in the dark. You can be completely...honest.
HE THINKS FOR A MOMENT, BEFORE YELLING TO THE SKIES:
GORDON: I WATCHED PROMETHEUS THE OTHER NIGHT AND I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS THAT BAAAAAAAAD!
SUDDENLY, IN THE DISTANCE, A SOUND. A CAR ENGINE STARTING.
GORDON: What was that?
HEADLIGHTS HAVE TURNED ON.
GORDON: What the...Hey!
HE STARTS TO RUN TO THE SOURCE OF THE NOISE. THE CAR, OR VAN, OR WHATEVER IT IS, STARTS PULLING A THREE POINT TURN, TO LEAVE.
GORDON: Hey! If you didn't want to be seen, don't shine your full beams at me! Hey! I didn't mean that about Prometheus! Come back!
THE VEHICLE HAS TURNED AND WITH A CRUNCH OF GEARS AND WHEEL SPIN ON GRAVEL, DEPARTS. GORDON RUNS ON FOR ANOTHER MOMENT BEFORE GIVING UP.
GORDON: You better have been Santa!
HE TAKES A MOMENT TO CATCH HIS BREATH.
GORDON: Does Santa drive a camper van?
END.

I beg of you, please explain "a machine gun ho ho ho jangle bulls and other Christian winter holiday things."
I am a comedy genius
It makes me genuinely laugh to pretend that I, a Jew, have been somehow immune to Christmas and do not understand this odd phenomenon
Like why do the goyim bring a tree inside? They’re just Like That sometimes, it’s not even Tu BiShebat!
So I started quoting my favorite Christmas movies, Home Alone and Die Hard which, in an Aristotelian sense are the same movie but that’s an answer to a question you didn’t ask so we’ll move on
And then I couldn’t think of any more Christmas movies so I decided to say jingle bells
See 1 in re: comedy genius. “Jangle bulls” is a funnier thing than “jingle bells”
Other things that are always funny: pretending you don’t know who Ed Sheeran is no matter how many times people tell you, responding to dudes talking about The Godfather as if they’re talking about Three Men and a Baby and you are confused, making up straight up lies about Judaism and seeing how many of your coworkers won’t challenge something like “the ceremonial socks of Yom Ama”
In conclusion thank you for joining me on this clown website for clowns, here is your red nose.

your caine art is so gorgeous!! kind of a silly question but what movie genres do you think the “gone” kids would watch?
Aa thank you so much!!! I'm so glad you like it
This is such a great question and is perfect timing as I've just got back from my film class. Here are my ideas:
Sam: I don't think Sam is really a movie person so, this is a bit of a cop-out, but I don't think there's any particular genre that he likes. He spends most of his time surfing. The only reason I'm willing to admit he has at least seen A film is because he took Anna to the cinema for their date. (Also the film was definitely Surf's Up, 2007. And no I will not take any criticism on this)
Astrid: Astrid is definitely one for documentaries. And this girl will watch documentaries on EVERYTHING (even open-heart surgery). She also has a secret soft spot for kids films as she watches them so much with Little Pete. She likes how easy everything is. There is a right and a wrong and its clear and obvious what it is. If you ask her though she'll never admit to it.
Quinn: Comedy. I love this boy but I just know he spends his evenings watching Adam Sandler films. That being said, he is open to a wide range of comedy including rom-coms and chick-flicks. He likes to dip into different genres, but really comedy is his thing.
Edilio: Edilio would mostly stick to Spanish-speaking films. Probably comforting family-friendly films that he can watch with his family. But I also think he would have an interest in old cartoons (think thundercats or trap door). They're easy to watch, family-friendly and can be useful for learning English. (I know that Trap Door is an English cartoon but shhhh I'm projecting)
Little Pete: Little Pete doesn't really watch the films that Astrid puts on for him. I think he just likes the experience. Being near her without her talking to him or touching him. He can experience the safety he feels around her without the sensory issues that can sometimes come with it. That being said, I think he would prefer the cartoons with muted colour schemes and softer soundtracks. Maybe Tim Burton?? As opposed to the more colourful Disney films she puts on.
Caine: Did somebody say crime films?? The Wolf of Wall Street, The Godfather, Nightcrawler. He likes to imagine himself as the leading man and he genuinely believes that he could do it better than the actual character. He also watched The Great Gatsby once and thought it was a good romance.
Drake: I think it's mentioned that one of Drake's favourite films is Saw ll?? And I definitely think he'd be into horror, but he would have no respect for the genre. He likes cringey, gory horror (which in of itself isn't a bad thing) but with particular love for any horror that involves the unnecessarily graphic assault of a woman. I also think he would really like Michael Bay and Joss Whedon films. Now that I think about it, he probably likes Tarantino as well.
Diana: OK so this one was tricky but I feel like Diana is, very secretly, a dark fantasy fan. She likes Guillermo del Torro and one of her favourite films is The Witches. It's the perfect blend of cynicism and escapism that just really hits the spot for her.
Jack: Jack is a sci-fi and high fantasy fan. Does it have magic?? He'll love it. Space tech?? He'll love it. He is definitely a fan of the big ones like Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings. But, and this may be controversial, I don't see his liking superhero films. He finds them too cliche and simplistic.
Orc: Orc doesn't get to choose what he watches a lot. He usually just has to watch the crime shows that his father puts on. But when he does get the TV, he's a big action fan. Think Terminator style films. He has also seen Die Hard upwards of 10 times.
Howard: Howard likes cult films. And a good Zombie movie never goes amiss. He hasn't gone a single Christmas without watching Gremlins and David Bowie in Labyrinth was his sexual awakening.
Dekka: Dekka likes a wide range of genres with no particular favourite. She leans more towards foreign films, indie films and experimental just because that's where she finds the most lgbt representation. After the FAYZ, she would be introduced to Ava Duvernay's work and would fall in love. If she's looking for an easy watch though, a good slasher never goes amiss
Brianna: Brianna has never, in her LIFE, been able to sit through a full film. However, if her parents order her to sit down for 5 minutes and just be quiet, adventure will always be her choice.
Mary: Mary likes chick-flicks. They're feel good films that don't require much thinking. They make her feel good about herself and give her some much needed entertainment. Also John loves musicals. I have no reason for this, it's just true.
Lana: Dark Comedy all the way. It just fits her personality so well. She enjoys the humour. She enjoys the aesthetic. And she kinda feels like she's rebelling against her parents in a minor way. What she will not tell you is that she is also a sucker for a well-written romance film.
Dahra: Hear me out here. Historical films and period dramas. Not sure why. I just get The Vibe. She loves Pride and Prejudice (as she should) and just finds historical films incredibly interesting and entertaining.
Albert: Albert is another one who likes documentaries. Definitely after the FAYZ he would focus more on business documentaries. But I think before, he would mostly just watch whatever his mother was watching. Which would include a wide range of interesting topics.

Movie Review | Christmas Evil (Jackson, 1980)
Tumblr media
I do not celebrate Christmas, which means that most of my favourite Christmas movies (Die Hard, Black Christmas, Trading Places) have fuck all to do with the spirit of the season. (I make an exception for It's a Wonderful Life, which is inarguably a great movie.) And while in theory I like to take a "live and let live" attitude when it comes to things other people are into, I must admit I find the overly commercialized Christmas cheer we're assaulted year after year with a bit trying. And when I hear people talking about the "Christmas spirit" or some other crap, I'll be honest and say I sometimes find it a bit insufferable. When I watched The Stuff earlier this year, I found it resonated nicely with my innate distrust of anything that gets a little too popular. Christmas Evil, a psychological horror film directed by Lewis Jackson and starring Brandon Maggart, is a movie for those of us who get suspicious when someone is a little too full of Christmas cheer. I should note that it's very good, in large part due to the lead performance.
For a good chunk of my cinephilic life, I was predominantly concerned with direction in more technical terms. When it came to acting, I would find myself struggling to say something more substantial than a vague summation of quality ("pretty good", "not so good", etc). It's something I still struggle with, but I feel I've steadily become more attuned to the specifics of a performance (or at least tried to do so), and particularly how it's complemented by the direction. It's something that was very much on my mind as I watched Christmas Evil, which gets much of its effect from the way Jackson's direction evokes the isolation felt by Maggart, frequently opting to hold takes much longer than you would expect, letting you feel his psyche deteriorate in almost real time. The shot choices vary, but are always deployed purposefully. One affecting moment has him framed in a medium shot alone in his house as he hums "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town", while another has him stare into the mirror as he tries on a fake beard. The cinematography by Ricardo Aronovich, best known for artier fare (credits include Missing, The Most Important Thing: Love and Murmur of the Heart), reminded me of Black Christmas in the way it subverts the coziness we associate with this time of year, and of Gordon Willis' work in The Godfather in evoking a certain insular, psychologically intense quality.
I'd been aware of the title for years (although I only just realized that it's a pun; blame my Christmaphobia), and had assumed it would be a slasher about a killer in a Santa suit like Silent Night, Deadly Night. But despite a few gruesome moments, The actual movie is closer to a mix of psychological horror and character study, and the comparisons I've seen to Taxi Driver are surprisingly on point. Given its premise (a man grows up to be dangerously obsessed with Christmas after seeing his mommy do more than kiss Santa Claus as a child), this shouldn't work, but the measured direction and deeply committed lead performance make it resonate. While it's gained something of a cult following (in part thanks to John Waters' endorsement), I suspect audiences might have struggled with it in the context of the first slasher wave. If you own the Vinegar Syndrome release, you can get a taste of what audience reactions were with the comment card featurette they helpfully included. Some choice responses:
Walked out
WHY?
TRASH!
A few viewers expressed a tone of concern:
Should not be shown around Christmas, will give weirdos bad ideas
Don't release!
At least one took the wrong message:
I think I'll be like Harry this Xmas
But at least some got it:
Very good study of a psychotic personality
Beats Bing Crosby
It will make a lot of money
That last person rated it "Excellent".

Recs! Recs! Recs! Books, movies, any sort of entertainment you enjoyed would be good.
Well, I feel like this could get entirely too long entirely too quickly. So, we’re going to restrict it to movies, whatever movies I happen to remember off the top of my head, and I’m just going to title drop in no particular order.

Smokey brand Select: Deck the Halls
I don’t know if you can tell by my blog, but i f*cking love Christmas. It’s my absolute favorite holiday of the year. I love t more than Thanksgiving, more than Halloween, even more than my f*cking birthday and that’s a lot because I'm kind of a f*cking narcissist. I love the festivities, the decorations, the music, the objective purity of the whole season. Christmas time is the one time of year that people decide collectively to suck less. Recently, with all of the stupid conservative boycotts and soapbox rants, that less is a little less than usually but still, it’s hard not to love the Christmas season. It’s so inspirational and has inspired some fantastic films. Here's a list of some of my favorites. A lot of these, the majority of them, probably aren’t “traditional” Christmas fare but i assure you that they are, indeed, Christmas films. To say otherwise would just be disrespectful.
10. Edward Scissorhands
Tumblr media
Tim Burton is going to be all over this list, man. Edward Scissorhands came out during a time i was incredibly infatuated with the striking visuals of Burton. I’m an Eighties kid and he kind of had his coming out party during that decade. Almost all of those films he released back then are favorites of mine. I remember seeing Scissorhands as a young kid and being absolutely mesmerized by it’s beauty. As an adult, i appreciated the underlying messaging just as much.
9. A Christmas Story
Tumblr media
You’ll shoot your eye out! I used to hate this movie, man. It was a staple in during my elementary school Christmas parties. I never paid attention to it because, as a kid, i hated anything that wasn’t a cartoon. One day i was sick at home and caught it offseason TNT. This thing played, like, every day for some reason. I heard it was a favorite of Ted Turner but that’s just rumor. Anyway, i watched it and completely fell in love with this earnest, absurd, flick. It’s a really good watch and deserves it’s title as a classic.
8. Home Alone
Tumblr media
Home Alone was the very first Christmas flick i remembered actually loving for being a Christmas flick. Like, when the season starts and Mariah Carey hits the airwaves, Home Alone is what i thing about. It’s the very first film that i unequivocally associate with Santa season. It’s funny because it’s not that great a film but i still love it dearly. I think that’s more because of nostalgia, though. There are fr superior films in the honorable mentions which probably deserve this spot more but Home Alone makes me genuinely smile.
7. Die Hard
Tumblr media
I mean, how can i not put this on the list? It’s a classic. One of the best action films ever made. One of the best performances Bruce Willis has ever given. Plus, it introduces the late, great, Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber. Now, my favorite of the lot is With a Vengeance but Die Hard would be nothing without this holly jolly first entry.
6. Scrooged
Tumblr media
One of my favorite Christmas narratives is A Christmas Carol. Dickens was a prolific writer and, among his works, the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge’s crisis of conscious is my favorite. I almost always love it when ever it makes it to screen but, for my money, the best version of this story took the form of the Eighties classic, Scrooged. It’s so Eighties in all of the ways. I love the overall narrative, the changes made t fit it into a then modern setting, and those incredible practical effects. It’s a feast for the senses while hitting all the necessary Dickens notes. Also, this version of the Ghost of Christmas Future is a whole ass nightmare. Like, f*ck, dude!
5. Trading Places
Tumblr media
I love this movie so much, just on it’s own merits as a film. It’s so good. Eddie Murphy is excellent in this film and Dan Akroyd is just as brilliant. Jamie Lee Curtis was incredibly hilarious, too. This was the second thing i had ever seen her in, after Halloween so, you know, going from that to this really caught my attention. Trading Places is a classic and should be seen by everyone.
4. Gremlins
Tumblr media
Gremlins is just generally one of my favorite films. I love this f*cked up movie, man. It’s SO good and this version is the tone down one. The original vision for this movie was just an R rated murder fest. I mean, the one we got wasn’t a joke wither It’s the reason we have the PG-3 rating. SH*t is just that violent Now, juxtapose all of this little green monstrosity anarchy against a dreamy white Christmas and you have all the makings of worming your way into my heart. Honestly, i prefer the gremlin shenanigans from the sequel, Mohawk is my favorite, but Stripe definitely left an impression.
3. The Long Kiss Goodnight
Tumblr media
I had a massive crush on Geena Davis when  was young. Can’t tell you why, but i was absolutely infatuated with the chick after i saw her in The Fly remake. I followed her career afterwards. She dropped several gems along the way, Beetlejuice, Thelma and Louise, Earth Girls are Easy, A League of their Own, but my absolute favorite film of hers is definitely The Long Kiss Goodnight. This thing is peak Nineties action excess. Shane Black in his prime. Die Hard III but John McCLane is a hot ass amazon woman who can beat you to death with her mitts. It even has Sam Jackson as a smart-mouthed side kick! I love it!
2c. A Charlie Brown Christmas
Tumblr media
I adore Charlie Brown. If Spider-Man, Godzilla, and Transformers are the foundations of my childhood, Snoopy is foundation adjacent. My Paternal grandma had all of the Peanuts films and i would watch them on repeat when we were forced to go over there. I say forced because she was kind of terrible and none of us really wanted to visit her ever but, when we did, and she wasn’t trying to exploit our labor or feed us rotten food, we did get to watch dope classic sh*t. She owned every Disney movie from the Renaissance and every Peanuts special on VHS. I hated visiting that woman but i loved those Charlie Brown adventures so kind of bittersweet memories.
2b. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Tumblr media
This one is associated with my other grandma, the one i actually liked. We used to sit down every year and watch this one together while sipping egg nog. Man, it’s hard for me to type this out. It breaks my heart remembering those times so I'm going to stop. I just really love How The Grinch Stole Christmas. It’s very, very, special to me.
2a. The Nutcracker
Tumblr media
The Nutcracker is in the same situation as How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I have a lot of love for this thing, in ll forms, but the one i remember so vividly is the opera they used to show every season. My grandma really loved opera and orchestral music. I miss her.
1b. Batman Returns
Tumblr media
I told you Burton was going to be all over this thing. Bro, how can this thing not be on the top of this list? Batman Returns left a real impression, man. Michelle Pfiefer’s Catwoman did things to me that would have reverberating effects through the rest of my life! She is, more than any other reason, why i have an unhealthy infatuation for crazy chicks. Also Nancy Downs but The Craft isn’t a Christmas movie. Outside of the way that patent leather catsuit ruined me for normal relationships, Batman Returns is just a force of f*cking nature. It’s Pure Tim Burton and i adore that man’s eye. He is one of my favorite creators and Batman is one of my favorite heroes. How can this thing not make my list? Batman Returns couldn’t take the number two spot, mostly because it jockeys for position with Nightmare pretty actively. I love them both so much, it’s hard to give the number one spot to either of them so, you know, split the difference.
1a. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Tumblr media
This is Halloween! I remember being so hype about this movie. Nine year old Smokey was super into this film and that love carries through to this day. Every time it airs, i catch it or, at least, i used to when i had television. I saw this thing day one in theaters, made my mom buy the VHS, it was one of the very first DVDs i ever purchased with my own money, and was the third Blue ray i got after picking up my PS3. The wild thing is, it’s not just me either. Nightmare has become a pinnacle of the cultural zeitgeist. This thing is all over the place. People get tattoos of Jack. Halloween Town even made it into a few Kingdom Hearts games and it wasn’t even a Disney movie at first! It was banished to the subsidiary of Touchstone when it first released because the Mouse House didn’t believe in it! Talk about a miscalculations.
Honorable Mentions: Tokyo Godfathers, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Bad Santa, Elf, Carol, Anna and the Apocalypse
