Hello everyone! Since the last chapter received such a positive response (well, if screaming could be called a positive response), I've decided to not make you all wait long for the second chapter of this fic. Also, I have no self-control. Anyways!

Once again obligatory disclaimer this is characters not people, don't ship real people, etc.

Jimmy doesn’t get a chance to return the ring any time in the next few weeks. Scott must have told Katherine that he visited, since she doesn’t come to bother him about it, and every time Jimmy tries to go to Rivendell, something gets in the way. Demon attacks, urgent business in his empire, once even Scott’s own guards turning him away. Apparently Scott is a ‘busy elf’. Jimmy doesn’t doubt he is, but he also doesn’t doubt that Scott’s actively trying to avoid him. Scott is a petty man, ultimately, and Jimmy knows this, used to love it like he loved all his husband’s flaws, all his imperfections that were perfect to Jimmy. Now, though, it just hurts that Scott’s turning that pettiness on him.

Finally, something changes. Jimmy gets an invitation (in person!) from one of his closest allies; Lizzie wants to hold a ball, and she wants as many people as possible to come. It will be fancy and formal, with dancing and politics and all the things Jimmy’s just a bit awkward with, but he is an extrovert at heart, and well...Scott will be there, as Lizzie warns him.

“I know you and him don’t really get on, so I get if you don’t want to come. I really hope you will, though, it’s going to be a fun night!”

Jimmy nods. “I’ll be there! I need to talk to Scott anyways, actually, got to return this ring to him. It’s important, I think.”

“Gotcha! See you there,” Lizzie says with a broad smile. Jimmy appreciates that she doesn’t ask any questions about the ring, especially given that it’s the one thing holding together his emotional state right now.

And that’s how he finds himself frantically searching for something fancy enough to wear to a formal ball, wishing he’d had the forethought to plan for this a bit better. Scott would have planned, he thinks, would have had an outfit laid out for each of them and the time it would take them to get there exactly calculated.

He shakes that thought off, settling for a green tunic with copper accents. It’s not the most elegant thing in the world, especially when you take into account the slime that’s dripped onto it, but it’ll have to do. It’s representative of his empire for sure, and the copper is a nod to his ally. It’s good enough, and that’s what matters, Jimmy thinks.

Lizzie greets him when he enters the ballroom, smiling widely with her new fiance by her side. “Jimmy! Glad you could make it!”

“Yeah, yeah, I did make it! Here I am!” The smile he gives her is genuine; he likes Lizzie. She's fierce and kind all at once, the best kind of ally.

Joel offers him a brief wave, which Jimmy happily returns before Lizzie drags him off to chat.

“So, heard from a little birdy you’ve actually been visiting Scott,” Lizzie says, a grin like the cat that got the bird on her face.

“As a favor to Katherine,” Jimmy quickly clarifies.

She nods. “She did say that, yes. She also said she heard about the visit from Scott himself.”

Jimmy hates himself a little for being pathetic enough to ask “What did- did she say what he said? Was he talking about me?”

“She didn’t say exactly, but he seemed ‘shaken up’, apparently...and a little wistful.”

“Oh, no. Lizzie, no.”

“Say, why did you have his ring?” She’s still grinning, a little more evil this time.

“It’s a long story!” Jimmy blurts, and flees. How’s he supposed to say ‘oh we were married on a server where we thought we were going to permanently die and then we respawned here and now Scott’s refusing to talk to me because the grief over my last death is slowly killing him’ tactfully? There’s just no way to do it! Nice one, Jimmy, now she thinks you’re in love with him or something, he thinks ruefully. Not that he isn’t- wasn’t. Wasn’t. Scott’s made it very clear that he and Jimmy are through.

Still, even with his depressing thoughts, the ball is pretty okay. No one’s gotten assassinated, there haven’t been any demonic appearances, Lizzie’s already showing off her engagement ring, and he’s pretty sure Joey’s going off about how hot demons are. It’s a decent party, by empires standards.

Scott makes an appearance some twenty minutes or so later, stepping into the ballroom with typical elven grace. He’s not a very elven elf, as he once told Jimmy, short and sarcastic with a love for mortals, but he still looks twice as elegant as everyone else in the ballroom. The shakiness in his step from a few weeks ago seems entirely gone, and for a minute, Jimmy’s heart leaps in hope. Maybe he’s getting better?

Well, only one way to find out. Jimmy swallows the complicated knot of emotion in his chest as he crosses the ballroom, coming to an ungraceful stop in front of Scott. Up close, the elf looks worryingly pale, and there are dark circles under his eyes. He looks like a strong breeze might sweep him away.

“Lord Codfather,” Scott greets.

“Elvenking,” Jimmy returns, dipping his head a little. Look, Scott, he can be formal too, alright? “Care for a dance?”

Scott stares for a long moment before giving a single nod. “I suppose I wouldn’t mind.” He takes Jimmy’s outstretched hand in his own gloved one, letting Jimmy put a hand on his waist as they start into a simple waltz.

Now, Jimmy is a terrible dancer, and he’s not too proud to admit it. He steps on Scott’s feet, gets off-rhythm once or twice, and nearly crashes them straight into Lizzie and Joel. But despite their current status as enemies(ex-spouses?), Scott says nothing about it. He’s silent, in fact, seemingly caught up in the music. There’s something wistful about his expression, something soft and gentle hidden under his icy facade. If Jimmy tries hard enough, he can almost pretend that the two of them are back in 3rd life, dancing under the stars, and Scott is looking at him like he’s the most precious thing in the world.

The illusion is shattered, however, by how heavily Scott is leaning on him by the end of the dance. He’s unsteady on his feet, grip like iron on Jimmy’s hand and shoulder. Though Jimmy can’t feel his hands though the gloves, when he brushes against Scott’s arm, it’s still a little too cold to be entirely right.

The music slows and then pauses before the next song, and they head for the edge of the dance floor.

“Thank you for the dance, Codfather,” Scott says. He steps away, face falling back into the emotionless facade so quickly it’s hard to be sure the tender expression of a moment before wasn’t a dream.

That’s the final straw for Jimmy’s fragile self-control. “Can we please stop acting like we don’t know each other?”

“What else do you want from me?” Scott snaps back.

“I- something! Anything! Just acknowledge that I exist, won’t you?”

“Acknowledging you exist doesn’t mean I’m still in love with you, you know.”

“I know,” Jimmy says, a little softer, a little bitter. “I know, trust me. I just want you to stop- to stop hurting yourself to try and avoid pain!”

“That’s not what I’m do-”

“Then what are you doing? Enlighten me, o wise elf!” They’ve kept their voices low enough, but people nearby are still starting to stare at them. Jimmy can’t bring himself to care. “You told me it would destroy you to lose me, but you’re losing me now by pushing me away!”

Scott’s expression is pained for a moment before he covers it with a glare. “I’m trying to do what’s best for the both of us, Jimmy.”

“No you’re-”

“I am an elf, and I cannot love a mortal. Humans are quick flames, burning and changing quickly. You’ll fall in love again, and you’ll forget me. There will be a mortal who loves you- I’m sure there are many already.”

“But I don’t want a mortal,” Jimmy protests. “I want you.”

“You can’t have me.”

“But why? Why, Scott?” His voice breaks, embarrassingly enough. “You said you loved me, you promised me all the time we’d be able to- to carve out, to steal from the universe.”

“I can’t give you that!” Scott snaps. “You’ll live sixty more years, maybe, a fraction of my life, a blink of an eye to an elf, and I can’t even give you that long! Not when I have to be the elvenking before anything else. Nothing I can do will ever be enough for you.”

“Enough for me? For ME? All I want is for you not to die to your own dumb plan and acknowledge my existance once in a while!”

“And all I want is for you to realize I can’t love you again!”

“Why can’t you care about me?”

“Why can’t you move on?” Scott counters.

“You’re not moving on, you’re just trying to forget!” Jimmy shouts.

In the silence that follows, he realizes that most of the ballroom must have heard the end of their little lovers’ quarrel. In fact, Lizzie’s somehow appeared next to him, laying a hand on his arm.

“Is everything alright, boys?” Her tight smile says that they will most certainly get kicked out of the ball if they continue this, and Jimmy can’t blame her.

“My apologies, Ocean Queen,” Scott says, switching to a formal tone with ease that Jimmy envies. He dips his head in respect, and only Jimmy sees how his hands tremble. “Everything is alright, but I am afraid I will have to leave early.”

She smiles again, dangerous this time. “No need to worry, Lord Smajor. Do try to avoid picking fights with my allies, next time, though.”

“It won’t happen again,” he promises, and sweeps away.

“Coward!” Jimmy shouts after him, anger making him bold. “You’re a coward, Scott!”

“Stop it,” Lizzie scolds. “You’ve already made quite the scene, and I did essentially kick him out. I’m not sure how much further you really want to carry it.”

“He is though, Lizzie, he’s a coward! Doesn’t want to face me because that means facing- well, facing everything that’s happened!”

“What do you mean, everything that’s happened?” Lizzie turns to the gathered audience of people who have been watching the spat, shooing them off as best as possible. They slowly disperse, thank goodness. “You and he are enemies, right?”

Jimmy almost winces. “It’s a bit- it’s a bit more complicated than that.”

“I can see that. Jimmy, that looked like a messy breakup!”

“It, um, well, it was. Sort of.”

“Oh, Jimmy.” Lizzie’s giving him a sympathetic look, which she follows up with a tight hug. “Next time, how about we don’t invite him?”

He nods against her shoulder, rage leaving him as quickly as it came. Instead, he just feels...tired. “Thanks, Lizzie.”

“Of course. We look after each other, yeah?’

“Yeah.”

Jimmy leaves the ball exhausted, still reeling from everything that happened. The few lingering bits of anger are what gets him home, a bitter taste in his mouth from the bitter words he spat. Coward! You’re a coward, Scott! He refuses to regret them.

Scott’s ring nearly ends up in the swamp again, but Jimmy’s cooled down enough by the time he gets back that he can’t bear to throw it away. Instead, it goes in a box which he tucks into his old storage chest, somewhere he’ll never have to see it again. Scott can go to hell if he wants the ring back after all that.

For a while, Jimmy’s plan to tuck the ring and never think about Scott again seems to be working. Lizzie visits a few times to check on him, but she never asks specifically about Scott, and Jimmy doesn’t say anything about him. He receives radio silence from Rivendell, and he tells himself that it’s good, that he doesn’t want to hear from Scott.

So yes, his plan is working, up until he gets a knock on his door and opens it to find Scott there.

The elf looks terrible, frankly, almost worse than he did at the ball. His hair, which is usually so nicely done, is a mess, cyan strands falling all across his face. His clothes are wrinkled and have swamp mud on them, his eyes have dark circles as violent as bruises, and he’s swaying a tiny bit. In short, he looks like he didn’t sleep for a week, chugged coffee, and fought god in a denny’s parking lot.

Jimmy thinks he’s kinda hot.

No, he doesn’t. Fake news, brain.

“Hi,” Scott says.

“Scott? What- why are you here?” Jimmy’s voice rises, in shock or outrage even he doesn’t know.

“I came to apologize.” Though he looks like he’s going to pass out at any second, Scott’s voice is steady. “I was scared- I am scared. I’m terrified to lose you again. But I shouldn’t have pushed you away and hurt you.”

“No, you shouldn’t have!” Jimmy snaps, but there’s little real rage behind it.

“I know. I- uh- fuck.” Scott’s hands are shaking as he pulls out a little box from some hidden pocket. “I brought a gift as an apology.”

Jimmy takes it, curious despite himself, and finds that what’s inside is a silver bracelet with little crystals embedded in it. Flowers are the predominant design; he recognizes roses, hyacinths, irises, anemone, and poppies. On the underside, there’s elven lettering, though Jimmy has no clue what it says. The whole thing is a little clumsy, not quite as professionally made as the ring Scott once gave him, and Jimmy looks up at Scott. “Did you make this yourself?”

“Mhm. I did my best, but it’s not as nice as I’d like.”

“It’s pretty,” Jimmy says.

Scott’s shoulders slump with relief. “It’s spelled, too. Protection, good fortune, that sort of thing.”

“Do the flowers mean something?”

“They do.”

Jimmy doesn’t press for details.

“I-” Scott starts again, a tremble in his voice that wasn’t there before. “I’m sorry, Jimmy, I really am. I won’t ask you to forgive me, but I needed to apologize before my time ran out.”

“Is it that- that dire?”

The barest nod. “This is what I chose to do with it. Making that, coming here. You deserved an apology.”

There’s a moment of awkward silence, Jimmy staring down at the bracelet.

Scott breaks it. “It wouldn’t be fair of me to ask you to love me. I can’t promise you eternity. I can’t promise you happiness. I can’t promise you that I won’t have to be the elvenking first and a husband second. But I am yours still, if you’ll have me.”

A part of Jimmy is very tempted to throw both Scott’s gift and his love back in his face. He can’t bring himself to stay mad, though, not when Scott’s looking at him like that, with so much raw vulnerability. So much devotion, like Jimmy’s the most precious thing he’s ever seen. It would be so, so easy to break that last strand of fragile hope in his expression; he’s offering up his heart on a silver platter, ready to shatter. Jimmy could- should- yell at him, reject his gift, tell him that he’s ruined any chance he has at Jimmy’s love.

Jimmy kisses him instead. It’s messy and it’s sudden and he very nearly drops Scott’s gift in the swamp in his haste to tangle his hands in Scott’s hair and press their lips together, but it’s real.

The little startled noise Scott makes gets cut off by Jimmy’s mouth on his. Scott’s lips are chapped and taste a little of glowberries, but Jimmy doesn’t care. He’s going to kiss his damn husband, something he thought he was never going to get to do again.

When they finally have to separate, Scott’s breathing hard, cheeks flushed. It’s a good look on him, Jimmy thinks, much more alive than his pale, rigid expression from before.

“So, I’ll take that as you want to stay married?” Scott’s voice is wry, collected, but his blush ruins the smooth effect.

“Of course I do! You absolute idiot!”

“Just checking.”

Jimmy kisses him again, just to shut him up. Scott goes with it easily, leaning into Jimmy’s embrace without complaint.

They pull apart quicker this time, and Jimmy holds the bracelet out. “Can you help me put this on?”

Scott nods. His hands are cold against the skin of Jimmy’s wrist when he fastens the clasp, but Jimmy grabs them and holds them in his own warm ones until they don’t feel quite so much like ice. It’s something. It’s a beginning.

“Come in and catch up with me?” Jimmy offers.

Scott nods again, and he doesn’t let go of Jimmy’s hand when Jimmy turns to go inside.

They talk about a lot of things. Empires, 3rd life, nightmares. Pufferfish, cake, flowers. They talk about the trials and tribulations of ruling; really, Jimmy complains that people keep attacking him and Scott nods in sympathy.

Eventually, though, the sun is starting to set.

“I need to get home,” Scott says. “You need sleep, not to stay up all night talking.” He goes to get up, and Jimmy immediately lunges, catching his sleeve.

“Don’t go! Please,” he adds, feeling his face flush at how desperate he sounds.

“Jimmy, darling, we both need to sleep.”

“We can sleep! I just….nevermind.”

“No, no.” Scott kneels back down, peering at him like Jimmy’s a puzzle that needs solving. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“Jimmy.”

“I don’t want to be alone!” Jimmy blurts, and immediately flushes again. “It’s just, I’ve been alone for a long time, and there’s this demon thing that keeps showing up, and I’ve only just got you back, I’m not ready to let you go, and-”

“Hold on. What was that about a demon?”

“There’s this demon creature that I keep seeing, and it’s really messing with me,” he manages. “It sounds like you, sometimes, but all distorted, and I can’t handle it! You know me, I’m not brave or smart or anything, I’m just Jimmy!”

Scott’s frowning, worry wrinkling his brow. “Alright. How about you come to Rivendell for the night, then? I can protect us both easier there.”

Jimmy nods, feeling especially pitiful as Scott helps him to his feet. “Thank you.”

“Always. Do you still have the ring I gave you?”

“I do, I just….give me a moment to remember where I put it.”

“Good. It’s important.” Scott doesn’t elaborate, and Jimmy is too distracted looking for the ring to ask what he means.

Scott’s offer of protection feels flimsier when he has to lean on Jimmy as they travel back to Rivendell, but even then, it’s impossible to feel quite so afraid now that Jimmy isn’t alone anymore. And it’s even harder to fear anything that could happen when he’s safe in a warm bed, his head tucked against his husband’s chest. They’ll be okay, Jimmy thinks. They’ve been given another chance, and this time they’re going to get it right.

6 Times Nintendo Asked for Too Much Money, for Too Little in Return, on Switch, or Despite It

I’m critical of anyone who I think is ripping people off, and Nintendo, sadly, espeically since it’s games don’t drop in price, has done that a lot. That’s not to say Sony and Microsoft have never done it before, but since the Direct was an egregious reminder of how they mishandle business, I thought now was as good a time as any to remind people, they kind of have a history.

6. Charging over $100, for a remake’s full content

Now, I will say, in most cases a remake can go full price. If it’s ground up like a remake should be, and adds extra features or content to sweeten the deal, that’s fair play, however, locking content behind a paywall is cheap. Enter Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia. While the base game was just full price, which was 40 bucks on the 3DS, it cost far more to unlock all of it’s extra content. A $25 dollar Amiibo combo back, which unlocked special content, and a $50 dollar season pass, which was mostly just new dungeons and weapons, brought the total to $115 dollars for all it’s content. Hey, I get it, DLC is a thing, but a season pass that costs more than the base game, is just a shitty thing to do. Nintendo even went so far as to alter how they added it up, to make it seem cheaper than it was. To make matters worse, they did all this while giving out free content like crazy on Nintendo Switch games, kind of telling everyone who wasn’t an early adopter of the system, to screw off. It was also the first real screw ball thing they did after Satoru Iwata-San had passed away. Talk about a spit in the face.

5. Overcharging for MicroSD’s.

One of the major problems of the Switch, is that it has too little space for all the games Nintendo wants you to buy on it, and to be fair, that we also want to buy on it. While most first party titles are pretty small in terms of what they require from the Switch, it has a massive 3rd party library as well, and how does Nintendo handle that, by charging double for what anyone could get for MicroSD’s that do exactly what the Nintendo branded ones do. I mean, seriously, imagine paying 100 bucks for 256GB of space, when you could pay 50. Be careful about that though, some MicroSD’s couldn’t be formatted, which would mean you couldn’t you them on the Switch. While that seems to have calmed down more over the years, it still happened at the time, and it still sucked. Overcharging because your name is on a product, is shameful, and screw everyone that does it, Nintendo included.

4. Charging for Nintendo Online.

I get it, Microsoft and Sony do it, and I hate that as well, but at least in return, you can get some actually decent games, and better deals on products, espeically with PSN for the latter, and come on, Game Pass is worth it no matter who you are. Nintendo though, even though it’s cheaper, has thus far refused to release any games past SNES era, a large portion of games released on Nintendo Online are cheap 3rd party rip-off’s of first party Nintendo games, and it really doesn’t appear like Nintendo plans to make the service truly worth it any time soon. As much as I love Nintendo, it’s really hard to justify paying for an online service that nets you so little, but alas, here we are.

3. New Super Bros U Deluxe

Yeah, a full price port of a game is never a good idea, and this whole list could have been made of them. Instead, I’m only going to include a few, but this one might be the worst. I mean, Super Mario Bros U is a great game, but it’s not worth full price just because it got ported. There’s not that much content there, even with the added Luigi U content inspired by the year of Luigi. It’s a hard sell trying to convince a logical person that the same 4 hour game, with an extra hour to hour and a half of content, which is just levels you already played as Mario, is a good buy, because it isn’t. I don’t know what Nintendo was thinking with this port, and it’s sad to see it, but alas, like all Nintendo games, it’s still full price on their store.

2. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

I will put it on record that I love Tokyo Mirage Sessions, it’s a somewhat more light-hearted game than the it’s source material, at least from Atlus’ end, but that doesn’t make it bad at all, in fact it’s great. However, it kinda failed on the Wii U, quickly leaving store shelves and never being heard from again until it’s Switch version was announced. It’s still a great game on the Switch, but either Nintendo got greedy, or Atlus let them, and a game that basically a commercial failure, came out at full price same as before, and that was easily a deterrent for many, as it should be. Selling a port of a game that flopped on a system that flopped, isn’t exactly a good consumer move, and yet, it’s exactly what happened.

1. Asking you to pay more for Miitopia

Look, I get that there is certain difference between playing a game on a handheld, and playing it on your 4K TV if you have one, and I’ll admit the idea of play Miitopia on my 4K display is both appealing and hilarious, but it’s just a port. It’s not a remaster, it’s a port. And for that extra 10 bucks we get what, a horse and some makeup? How people can justify that is beyond me. The “Oh I didn’t play it on 3DS so this will be my first time buying it” is an excuse to hide behind because your love of Nintendo is too strong. If don’t call out a company for it’s bad practices, or buy into those practices, they are only going to do worse, and if this list isn’t proof of that, that I don’t know what to tell you. Charging more for a port than an original release is shady though.

The one in which the Euros 3rd place playoff is abolished after Italia 1980, and then restored at short notice for Italia 2028, making it the historic occasion in which a whole country cockblocked their captain Nicolò di Genova.

It is June 1980. The European Championship is taking place in Italy. It is the first edition of the tournament with eight teams, divided into two groups. The winners of each group move on to play in the final, and the runners up of each group move on to battle for third place.

It is the final edition of the Euros to have the third place playoff. With dwindling attendances and television viewers, UEFA deems the fixture unnecessary for future editions of the tournament. Italy hold Czechoslovakia to a 1-1 draw, and the match is decided on penalties. The final outcome? 9-8 to Czechoslovakia.

For as long as it has existed, there has been vocal opposition to the third place match. There are those who question its purpose, who see it as a meaningless extension of the tournament for advertisement money. A kinder commentary on offer is from those who see it as cruel to make losers play yet another competitive fixture, for little to no reward. Just think of the fourth-placed team—they played better than the rest of the competition except three—yet they must go home with the bitter memory of having lost twice.

On the other camp, there are those who recall with great fondness the third place match of the 2002 World Cup between host nation South Korea and Turkey. If that doesn’t work for you, what about the consolation it offered to the host nation in the 1990 World Cup, a breakout tournament for Italy’s Roberto Baggio?

Now we skip to June 2028. The European Championship is once more taking place in Italy. There are twenty four teams divided into groups, followed by a knockout stage. There is no third place fixture on the schedule. The much-beloved Italian captain takes his team on a blistering dream run, in front of an adoring home crowd, beating a well-regarded Portugal and incumbent holders Belgium along the way. He has declared his intention to retire for good, once this tournament is over.

Picture this: you are Italy. You play England in the semifinal in Napoli, at the Stadio San Paolo, also known as the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. You arrive in the stadium, or you watch from home, full of hope, with faith in your captain and your squad. Your team scores one at the 20th minute. Perfect opening. England try but they can’t get past the deadbolt across goal, past your much vaunted defensive line. At the 63rd minute, Foden puts one past your goalie, but VAR rules it offside. At the 89th minute, the scoreline is still 1-0 and you’re nearly through, and some egregious fans are already cheering, and then Foden gets it in for real in a stroke of sheer luck. The ball hits the crossbar but somehow bounces downward into goal. The game goes into extra time, and then to penalties. The final result? England wins 4-3 on penalties. This is a brutal game. At the end of your match, your captain sheds tears and apologizes for not being able to do more to push the team through to the finals. No! You want to scream. Caro Nicolò, il nostro capitano, it’s not your fault. You have done so much for us. You begin to blame yourself: it’s us, it’s our fault. We dared to dream too early. You were so busy dreaming of your beloved captain raising the trophy that you forgot the game wasn’t over. In fact, even before this semifinal you were already dreaming of the trophy. This is how fate punishes you. You hate to see him end his career this way. He didn’t let you down, you let your captain down! Can we do this one over? You’ll do right by your captain this time.

Picture this: you’re the president of UEFA, and the tournament is hosted in your home country. It would have been the honor of honors, to award the winner’s medals to your compatriots. The papers are raging over the match outcome: England squeaked through on a razor’s blade, and Italy were the more inspired team. The fans are out in the streets. The people have spoken! Let us bring back the third place match! Let us see our captain off with dignity and honor! Your colleagues say: this is preposterous. We got rid of it years ago, because of Italia 1980. But does anyone really remember why? The advertisers tell you they’re willing to pay. One extra match means extra revenues. Worse things have happened in the pursuit for money. What’s the harm in a consolation match? An emergency meeting is called. Who’s playing in the second semifinal? France and the Netherlands. Both their feds agree to the third place match. From the next tournament onwards, there’ll even be a sweet cherry of a coefficient bonus—all the feds agree to this, but it would not be fair to the rest to apply it this ongoing tournament (and you hear minor grumbles from the FIGC, FFF and KNVB, who think they should be compensated for the inconvenience). No matter; the people have been given what they want! Another football match in the grand machine of things! The meeting takes so long that France beats the Netherlands 3-2 in the meantime, and now someone has to do the unpleasant job of telling the players. Were any of them consulted in this affair? What a preposterous concept. That’s not how UEFA works. UEFA says jump and they say how high.

Picture this: you are Nicolò Di Genova, and you’ve played the final match of your professional career. It did not end in the way you wanted, but such is life. You are ready to put your former self in the grave. You say goodbye to your treasured teammates, and the very next morning you check out of the training center to make your way to Turin, to see your fidanzato in the semifinals. Well, he crashes out too, his downfall orchestrated by that paraculo of your club teammate, Sébastien of the number 23. And so it is England vs France in the final, to be played in Italy. The thought of it turns even the strongest stomach of any citizen of this noble country. The only silver lining to this cursed final lineup is getting to whisk the love of your life off into the secluded countryside, and maybe with a few rounds of passionate lovemaking you can even forget the pain of loss.

You’re in the car. You just picked up your inamorato from his team hotel. You want to push him into the backseat and blow the brains out of him but you have better self control than that.

“How does retirement feel like?” he cracks a joke at you.

“You know full well my plans,” you return cheekily.

You’re driving off into the E70 when your phone rings. It doesn’t stop ringing so you pull over to take the call.

It’s your national team coach. “They just restored the third place match. Can you come back to the training ground?”

Who agreed to this? Your mind is reeling from the preposterousness of it all.

“They love you, Nichi. The people want you back.”

You exchange a look with your lover. Now his phone is ringing too. It’s his coach.

Due to this unfortunate turn of events you end up having an argument with your lover. You are principled, and having principles means not giving in to this total farce of a circus show, the third place match. Your lover is an incurable romantic, and pleads on behalf of your people. They did this all for you—show them some love in return. And what was the meaning of the past 31 years of your life again? You have already given them everything.

If only the people of Italy knew how much they had to thank Yusuf Al Kaysani. It’s because of him—it’s because of his beautiful deep brown eyes that glisten with all the stars of this universe that you cave and you agree.

“Get out, let’s switch. I’ll drive, and you call your mom and tell her the news.”

How do you begin to articulate how much this man knows the answers in your heart before your brain catches up to the same conclusions?

And so, like Lazarus, on the fourth day of your death you come back to life.

ITA vs NED

Picture this: you’re the cameraman, in the tunnel. The teams are lining up. The two captains emerge from the dressing room and compliment each other on their good looks with wry smiles. Some good natured ribbing, you think. They’re old friends. They played together for eight years at the same club. The Italian captain puts his hands on the Dutch captain, and then, like magnets, his hands seem incapable of leaving the Dutch captain’s back. You start to feel uncomfortable, like you’re seeing something that you shouldn’t be seeing. You look around. Everyone else in the double file of blue and orange is just chatting away, acting normal. Maybe...it’s just your imagination? You train your camera on the chatting crowd, giving the captains space. The match officials appear, taking the lead in front of both teams. You get in position for the money shot, following the two teams out of the tunnel and into the adoring crowd.

Picture this: you have never missed a single football match your grandson plays in. So when there’s a surprise third place match announced, you have to bail on karaoke night with the girls to watch the match on tv. Your friends don’t watch football, but if they do, they watch for the “hot guys on the Italian team”. Oh yeah, he’s playing Italy, you tell them. Feel free to come over to my place, if they don’t mind your oldest son and your rowdy grandchildren. Karaoke night swiftly becomes football night. There is an argument between Hamza and his dad over the pointlessness of the third place playoff. So...your family has been behaving in an unusual manner for several months now, and you suspect it’s because your grandson said he is gay. The papers here don’t report it, because they still want to claim him to some extent, but you have noted that the coverage is more conditional than before. You don’t live under a rock, and you’ve seen the news on YouTube even if no one around you is prepared to talk about it. As the two teams walk out of the tunnel and onto the pitch, you notice the Italian captain letting his hand slip from your grandson’s back, and Hamza suddenly jumps in front of the TV screen to adjust the volume.

“What the heck are you doing?” Mehdi, Hamza’s father and your eldest son, yells.

“The audio was...wonky,” Hamza replies sheepishly. “But I think it’s okay now.”

The match begins. At a corner kick, the Italian captain practically plasters himself all over your grandson, and it’s Hamza messing with the TV remote again, this time accidentally switching channels. Mehdi slaps him in the back of the head. You think that maybe it’s time you called Ibrahim. Someone needs to tell you the truth they’ve been so bad at hiding. Your grandson is not just gay, he seems to have a lover, and it’s that evil-eyed captain, the man who curses all who cross him.

Picture this: you’re a fan from the friendly town of Muggenbeet, watching from the San Siro. You came all this way to support the Oranje and they had to concede that final goal to France in front of your face. Sore and in denial about your loss, you start to make jokes about Waterloo to cope, handing the French off to the English. And then—out of nowhere, UEFA announces that they’ll restore the third place match. You think it’s the most shameless attempt for the host country to award themselves something ever. But, you know, does anyone really want to watch an England-France final? No. Never. For forever. We hate them both. It’s not football. It’s a circus of clowns. The viewership for this third place match is through the roof, higher than for your semifinal vs France. Let’s just treat this as the real final. What a galaxy-brained idea. Your country could steal it from the hosts—no hard feelings to Italy. You’ve enjoyed the pizza and the pasta, maybe it would be fun to crush their team like little peppercorns to sprinkle on your food. Based. Now you want a cacio e pepe after the match. Wait, you’re not in Rome, where the real (fake news!) final is. Boo. There is a corner, right at the end where you are sitting. Poepjes is taking it. Dekmijn and Blootgat are running up. Your captain is being felt up by the Italian captain. (No literally, that guy isn’t even looking at the goal? He’s just...pressing himself against your captain? Why are his hands encircled around Al Kaysani’s waist like so?) Anyway, the ball pings between the Italian keeper and Blootgat, and then it flies into Di Genova’s rather shapely calves...and bounces into the goal.

Uhhhhhh, THANK YOU? Grazie mille Nicolò Di Genova!!!! You gave us one goal!!!

The Italian fans must be flabbergasted. Isn’t this the dude’s retirement match? Or whatever. Who knows. Italy is a place of the greatest contradictions, so you’ve been told. But you’ll take what you can get. You kinda feel bad for the guy, who has buried his face in his hands. Maybe...you should cheer for him. And so...the lot of you, the orange lot, sitting in the Curva Sud, you start singing for the Italian captain. Nicolò Di Genova! There’s only one Di Genova!

The third place match is the most lawless ninety minutes in the historical timeline.

Picture this: you’re an Interista and season ticket holder. And of course you support your national team. You were heartbroken when the England keeper denied Marcuzzi to progress to the finals. You cried when your captain cried. And then, out of nowhere, they said, let’s bring back the third place match. The finals are in the Stadio Olimpico, so...maybe let’s have the third place match in the San Siro? You score a ticket at your usual seat. You get to see your captain one more time before he rides off into the sunset? What more can you ask for? This is romance of the highest order. The San Siro loves Nichi, of course all the staff and volunteers come together to make the event happen in a matter of days. You can’t believe this is happening. And then...your captain opens the scoring with an own goal. The Dutch fans are singing for him. What do you do? Well, if you can’t beat them, join them—you can sing louder for your captain! He’s your captain! And you know, their captain, he’s kinda your guy too, because Sempre Inter. Revenge is served, sweet and cold like a scoop of gelato, when your captain heads in the equalizer. The crowd goes wild. He’s taking this match seriously, but you knew he always would—that’s why you love him. He could ask for your firstborn and you would gladly give it up. You can always trust your capitano. There is a penalty call in the second half of the match and his teammates give it to him—a little unorthodox—but like a deadly sniper your captain sneaks a cool and calculated one past the Dutch keeper. You cheer. Does it count as a hat trick when you’ve scored at both ends? What a scoreline to retire to!

Picture this: you’re Yusuf Al Kaysani. You just lost in the third place match, a match widely panned as the least necessary match in a tournament by those who don’t know better. And yet, the third place match is the purest expression of love for the beautiful game. All other matches are clouded by the temptations of fame and fortune. The third place match you play for love and honor. You watch from the sidelines as your boyfriend leads his team to collect the medals, from none other than Paolo Maldini. Maldini, who’s doing an admirable job as UEFA President. Who knows where and how they got these medals at short notice—sometimes this country pulls miracles like a rabbit out from the magician’s hat of chaos. Everyone in the stadium is acting like this is the final. It’s not—it’s something a little better, a match born of love, played for love, with nothing to win and nothing to lose.

There is no trophy to lift, so Nico’s teammates lift him. They’re yelling for you. You’ve played with and against at least 90% of that team. Come join us, the men in blue say, and everyone forms a circle, arm linking arm, bouncing to the music. There are no losers here—your whole team is invited to the celebrations. The Dutch fans are singing: Second place! Second place! Let’s pretend we’re second place!

Let’s be real, for this one night, in this exact stadium, there’s only one captain, and the ones in the know push you towards him. Here’s your man, the unspoken acknowledgement. But you know your place—this is not your night. This night is for him. It’s for the country that loves him, and for him to say one last goodbye. Daniele Pirozzi jumps on the captain’s back, and the captain carries him for a while, laughing away. Pirozzi, whom you spent countless hours training how to read the field, in a fashion after yours. And then there’s Boselli, Marcuzzi, Poepjes and more. From one generation to another, the baton is passed. Nico, look around, these are our boys, as good as any. They’ll be better than us, and we are happy to see it, for the love of the game. Pirozzi jumps off the captain’s back and jumps onto you, asking you if you want to lift the captain together. You laugh and agree. On the count of three, uno, due—

Picture this: you’re Nicolò Di Genova, and you’re sitting on the shoulders of your protegé and your lover. Here we can mark the passing of the guard—tonight you are unburdened and the only thing that’s left, you realize, is love. Yusuf was right. Look, look how much they love you. Even San Paolo did this for you. Could you ever have denied all of them this? You almost screwed it up at the beginning, but perhaps God was just reminding you to take your responsibilities seriously. You are but a servant of the game and this ground is your ground, your hallowed ground, the church of your sins and glory.

It’s the final competitive match of your career, and you get to walk off the field, arm in arm with the love of your life, cheered on by a country you gave everything to.

Now, for the rest of your life to begin.

I can’t express how MUCH FUN I had writing these. My grandpa would always tell me I needed to learn how to fix things because I needed to learn to be independent. So, some of these are actual experiences I had lol My exes were always so surprised when something broke down and I was like “*puts tool box down* ok, move over, let me handle this��

Yoosung

Yoosung is in the middle of a LOLOL battle when suddenly the lights go out

He groans and goes outside his apartment with you to see if it has something to do with his apartment or with the whole building

It’s just his apartment

“Come with me downstairs?” you ask. He nods but starts complaining it’s the middle of the night and no one is going to come yo fix the problem and now he’s going to lose that battle.

You reach the first floor and you guide him towards a backroom, which has the electrical box you’ve been looking for. Thankfully, the key is still on, so you open it

Yoosung screeches

“MC NO STOP”

“Baby, it’s okay. I just want to see what the problem is”

Yoosung is so confused because it’s just a lot of wires and switched that don’t seem to make much sense, but you stare and them in silence. Finally, you softly turn on one switch and smile to yourself.

“I think that’s it. Lets see”

You return to Yoosung’s apartment and the light is back on.

“I think it’s because we had too many things plugged in. Shouldn’t happen again” you say, non-chalantly as you shrug.

You’re his new favourite magician

Zen

He’s the one that will be like: “Don’t worry, I’ll do it!” but actually knows that to do. He’s been living on his own for most of his life, he knows the basics.

One day, he comes home and finds you changing a lightbulb and he’s lie “No, babe, let me do it, I don’t want you falling down”.

But another day, he finds you half your body down the sink and is taken aback. You explain it was leaking so you decided to give it a try.

“But why didn’t you wait for me? I could have helped you, I don’t want you to feel you have to fix things around here, I just want you to relax and be happy”. He then proceeds to take off his shirt, to avoid stains. “C’mon, I’ll do it”.

“And… done!” you say and come back to a sitting position only to find your boyfriend shirtless in front of you.

“You actually fixed it?” he asked. You nod and then shrug, your cheeks a bit pink. You’ve been together for some time now but you still find yourself blushing whenever you see Zen’s bare chest.

“Well, since you’ve already taking off your shirt” you say with a coy smile. Zen smirks and helps you stand up to kiss you.

Jaehee

You think she’d know how to fix anything around the house since she’s been on her own as well

But truth is, she doesn’t usually have time to do that, so she calls someone to fix things around her apartment

One day, the fan stops working on a really hot summer night. It’s 1 am, Jaehee still has a lot to do

So you tell her not to worry, grab your tool box and start working. After half an hour, it’s up and running again

She’s thankful and makes sure to leave a nice breakfast for you before she goes to work the next morning

You two are the dream team

Jumin

Jumin is not the one to swear. You’ve heard him do that just two or three times and it was when things were serious. So, when you heard “Shit!” and a loud, annoyed sigh you come quickly to the living room where he’s looking angrily at his laptop.

You looked at him arching an eyebrow and he explains his laptop suddenly shut off in the middle of a online meeting. It won’t turn on no matter what he does.

“May I?” you ask, grabbing his laptop. He waves it off. You look at it, pressing some buttons that seem to do nothing. The you put your hands under it and smile. You return the laptop to Jumin and go running to your bedroom, while your husband looks at you.

You return with a medium sized box and place it on the floor. You open it and Jumin can see a lot of different sized tools. Since when do you have this and why haven’t he seen it before?

You look at him and smile. “I still hadn’t unpacked this” you explain with a small giggle, while you take a really small screwdriver and turn around Jumin’s laptop. “So… uhm, may I try to fix it? I mean, there’s no technician available at this hour, I may as well try”.

Jumin nods and you start.

A few minutes after that, Jumin’s laptop in completely open and you’re inspecting the insides under Jumin’s amazed look, while he’s having a glass of wine. You grab a round metal piece and open it. Inside it, Jumin can see a big ball of white fur. Elizabeth the 3rd’s fur.

You grab it it and show it to him. “They were stuck in the ventilator. That’s why it was so warm. Let me put this back together and you can continue working”

Jumin doesn’t really understand the joy behind fixing things, since he’s used to having someone fix them for him. But seeing how happy it makes you, it’s his new favourite thing.

Saeyoung

He’s a fixer too and this time you can’t one-up him, I’m sorry

But he’s still pleasantly surprised when he discovers you can fix things around the house

He almost melted when he saw you had a tool box and looked into it, liking you knew your way into things

He thought it was cute until one day he couldn’t find you

He called you, thinking you maybe had gone to the market, but you weren’t answering

Saeyoung was Officially Panicking™

Until he heard your voice

“Babyyyyyy, can you bring me a beer?~”

“… god?”

“Where are you!?”

“On the roof!”

Saeyoung startles outside the house and finds you sitting on the roof with a big smile and your toolbox next to you

“Hey!” you wave.

“What are you doing up there? Are you safe? You need to come down?”

“No, but I could really use a beer. There was a small leak but I’m almost done” you explained, laughing at your boyfriend’s shocked expression

Will definitely teach you more about fixing computers. He has tons of laptops and CPU’s that went bad so you can practice on them.

If you fix them, you’ll get a reward!~

At first you think it’s probably a bad of Honey Buddah chips but it seems Saeyoung has a nice and modern way of rewarding you ;)

This boy is… just is so pure. I can’t picture him getting his hands dirty

He’s also used to calling a handyman

One day, he trips and accidentally breaks one of his studio lights and a boom arm

He’s about to throw them to the trash but you ask him to please let you give them a ry

So you sit on the floor for a couple hours, trying to figure out a way to repair them

And you do!~

V is amazed at this ability

Will prepare you your favourite tea as a way of saying thank you

Saeran

Obviously he knows how to fix things as well

He’s way more patient than Saeyoung to teach you how to fix things around the house

Also, his new favourite hobby is to see you peacefully try and repair one of his old laptops or any artifact around the house

You usually put your headphones on so you work in silence, sometimes moving your lips along the music

He loves that

Once, you need to repair the sink, so you change clothes to an old white t-shirt and a pair of denim shorts. You put your hair in a high ponytail and start working

He blushes because he’s never seen you looking so hot

And you notice it. Maybe he could use a little teasing after you’re done fixing the sink

You’ll definitely bend down more times than you need to just to see his reaction

Animal Adventure X Episode 8: Get Ready To Get Schooled! (SCRIPT)

It’s been a while since I posted any Animal Adventure related content. But luckily, I found something that’s pretty interesting. A script for the 8th episode of Animal Adventure X! (At least, the script for the English dub.)

The script ends pretty abruptly nearly halfway through. But what we have so far is good enough to give us some insight as to how the episode itself would’ve played out. (Along with giving us a glimpse into what the Animal Adventure X TV series is like.)

With all that said, let’s dive in!

(Strikethrough text reflects the pieces of dialogue that were cut out.)

ANIMAL ADVENTURE X

Episode 8: Get Ready To Get Schooled!

Narrator: Another day begins in the Aeros region. As our heroes--

(The camera pans to Velocity, Alex, and Amy who are still sleeping)

Narrator: Still sleeping...

(Chi bursts through the door. Cheery as ever.)

Chi: Wake up guys, it’s time to start the show!

(The others ignore her and continue sleeping)

Chi: I said... WAKE UP!!!

Velocity: What did you do that for?

Alex: Yeah sis, you I was having a great dream about a rice ball until you showed up.

Chi: Well, I’m sorry that I woke you up from your “PERFECT DREAM”. Besides, you’ve got three have a serious day of Stamp collecting ahead of you.

Amy: That’s right!

Velocity: We still gotta get the 3rd Aeros League Stamp!

(The three of them run oAfter eating their breakfast, Velocity, Alex, and Amy run off into New Leaf Town wh unaware that they’re being watched by Dr. Dogman and Britty.) who are watching the trio from a nearby tree.)

Britty: Well, whatever are they doing now?

Dogman: Looks like those fools are headed for the town. Probably for another Stamp.

Britty: Which should be the perfect time for an ambush!

Dogman: Precisely! Now let’s follow them and see find what out what else they’re up too!

Both: Huzzah!!

(Before setting out to follow Velocity and friends, both their stomachs start to grumble.)

Dr. Dogman: After we get something to eat...

Britty: Nya...

(The next scene switches back to Velocity, Alex, and Amy as they continue to walk around the Town)

Alex: Says here that the next Stamp tent should be in Neon City.* [EMPIRE CITY]

Velocity: Great! That means th should get me even closer to the Aeros Leagues!

Amy: Don’t forget about us!

Alex: Yeah Velocity, do you even have some type of strategy to take on Bijou?

Velocity(Baffled): Bijou?

Alex: Says here that she’s supposed to be the Stamp Holder there. The guidebook also says that she uses lightning fast attacks against her foes.

Velocity: Lightning fast? Pssh, I can take her on anyday.

Amy: Well Your missing the point Velocity. Georgi and Colette Chi might have been easy, but Bijou is a whole nother 10 times different.

(Velocity soon understands how strong Bijou is)

Velocity: I guess you’re right... But, what can I do in order to prepare for Bijou?

Amy: Well--

???: Are you three talking about Stamp Holders?

Velocity: Yeah. L- Wait a sec, who said that?

???: I did!

(Suddenly, a man wearing a purple uniform approches the duo)

Alex: Who are you?

Piggl

Piggleston: Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Piggleston and I run the Piggleston Battle Academy here in New Leaf Town!

Alex: Battle Academy?

Of course

Piggleston: In my The Battle Academy is a special school where students can learn how to take on Stamp Holders with using by using the best battle strategies that there are!

Piggleston: And the best part, is I’m that I’m the Headmaster!

(Piggleston begins to twri twirl around in a purple leotard while dancinc laughing.)

Velocity: Uh, does that mean you’re also one of the teachers there?

Piggleston: Yep!

Amy: That’s great!

(Pats Velocity and Alex’s backs) before firmly p

My name’s Amy and, me and my friends here could really learn a thing or two from you.

Piggleston: Does that mean you’re all interested into enrolling into my academy?

Amy: Of course! We’d be glad to join.

Piggleston: Wonderful!

(Piggleston : continues to dance while Velocity and Alex begin to get angry at Amy)

Velocity: What was that all about?

Amy: You should be thanking I don’t know why you two are angry at me, you should be thanking me for what I just did back there.

Alex: I guess you’re right...

Velocity: Those lessons could help out us come up with a way to beat Bijou.

Alex: So where is your Battle Academy Piggleston?

Piggleston: It’s right near Route 1! Follow me!

(The trio then follows Piggleston to his Battle Academy. Mea While that’s happening, Dogman and Britty pop out of a nearby bush.)

Dogman (Baffled): Battle Academy?

Britty: Looks like the twerps off to hit the books again.

Dogman: Figured. That feline pest is more suited for school higher grades

Britty: rather than Stamps.

Britty: You know, you could probably learn a thing or two from that same school Dogman head, that way, you won’t fail anymore!

Dogman (Ticked off): I’d watch my mouth if I were you. I can disassemble you anytime I want.

Britty: *sigh* Sometimes I wish I wasn’t a robot...

(The camera cuts to Velocity, Alex, Amy, and Piggleston who are all on their way to the Battle Academy)

Piggleston:

Amy I think I’m starting regret to regret my decision...

Alex: Come on Amy, this was YOUR idea.

Velocity: Yeah! We’re not

Velocity (Continued): going anywhere until we learn a bit about Stamp Holders Bijou.

Piggleston: Ah, here we are!

(Piggleston runs off in front of the school) Feast your eyes on the Battle Academy!

Velocity, Alex, and Amy: Woah!

(The trio is amazed by the scope of the Battle Academy)

Velocity: This place is huge.

Alex: I wonder how much money went into making this school.

Piggleston: About 500′000′000 dollars. But enough about that, please come in!

(The four enter the Battle Academy)

SO, you three want to know how to beat Bijou right?

Velocity: That’s kind of the whole reason why we came here.

Piggleston: Well lucky for you, there’s a class about Bijou right down the hall! Now, let’s get going!

(Piggleston then pushes Velocity, Alex, and Amy into the classroom while that’s happening, Dogman and Britty follow them inside)

Dogman: This place is huge!

Britty: I bet’cha the Headmasters loaded.

He’s probably swimming through a pool filled with his money as we speak.

Dogman: If he’s that rich then, he must have something valuable.

Britty: And whereever we find something valuable, we take it!

Dogman: Exactly!

(The camera then cuts to Velocity, Alex, and Amy. Who are escorted into a by Piggleston into a classroom)

Velocity: This classroom is huge!

Alex: I guess that’s what happens when you have 500′000′000 dollars.

Piggleston: Alright, you three can take a closer seat over there while I begin the lesson.

(Piggleston clears his throat before greeting the class)

Piggleston: Today, we’re going to learn about Stamp Holders. Now before we get started, I would like to introduce you to our temporary students for today. Please give a warm welcome for Velocity, Alex, and Amy!

(The entire class turns around to greet the trio)

Class: Hello, welcome to the Battle Academy!

Amy: Wow, the students here are so lively.

Alex: They really must enjoy being here.

Piggleston: Now that that’s out of the way, it’s Time to start today’s lesson! Today, we are going to clearn about Stamp Holders. As many of you may know, Stamp Holders are people who challenge anyone who steps into their Stamp Tents in order for to test their opponent’s strength. Once they have been defeated in a battle, the challenger is awarded with a Stamp! Unlike your average Stamps, these Stamps are gi special as they give you access to are proof of your victory against the Stamp the various Stamp Holders across the region. an One example is the Basic Stamp which is given out by Chi, who is the Stamp Holder of our very own New Leaf Town.

Alex: That’s my sister!

Piggleston: Now we will discuss on how to beat a Stamp Holder. Our subject for today will be Bijou from Empire City.

Velocity: Finally time to learn something about Bijou.

Piggleston: Bijou is known for her lightning fast agility and dazzling attacks, which could do be disasterous if you’re not quick enough.

Student 1: So, what should you do?

Piggleston: Good question Kenta! The first thing you need to do is to watch her moves so you can se what she will come up with next. The next thing you should do is to counter against her with a Protective attack or by using a Ground technique technique which should the latter should come in handy i when Bijou comes in for a close range attack.

Student 2: What happens if you defeat her?

Piggleston: I was just about to get to that Chip! If you remember what y I have taught you today and successfully defeat Bijou, then you will be rewarded with the Pop Star Stamp!

(The class is then impressed by a picture of the Pop Star Stamp)

Velocity: So that’s the STamp I’m aiming for.

Alex: Yep! Says so right here in the guidebook.

Piggleston: Now before we end today’s lesson, I want all of you to take a 2 page quiz on what you learned today.

(Velocity, Alex, and Amy are Velocity: What, a quiz?

Alex: Nobody said anything about a test!

(Piggleston co walks over to the trio to ensure them)

Piggleston: You don’t have three d Relax Alex. You three aren’t a part of this school which means, that you don’t have to take the quiz.

Amy: *sigh* That’s a relief...

Piggleston: I’d As much as I would love to guide you three around the school, I have to stay here in the classroom and take care of the class. But because of your interest in this is the Battle Academy, I’ll assign two of my students to give you a tour. Ricky? Momo? Could I please have a minute of your time?

(Two children get up from their seats and s walk over to Piggleston)

Piggleston: Velocity, Alex, Amy, allow me to introduce you to Ricky and Momo.

(Momo a callico cat that wore a white dress and a pink skirt along with a red bow on the back of her head, begins to greet the trio)

Momo: Nice to meet you!

And, THAT’S the whole script. Like I said earlier, the script ends pretty abruptly. Ending right after Momo introduces herself to the main trio. (We don’t even get any dialogue for Ricky.)

I remember reading this a few years back and remembering that there was more content written. With Velocity and the gang hearing a loud blast while eating dinner. (Which probably would’ve lead to the big confrontation between the heroes and Dogman for the episode.)

From a critic’s point of view, this episode does a good job at elaborating more on how the battles in this show work alongside the Stamp challenge. There’s some pretty funny lines in here too! (I find Piggleston to be the funniest out of most of the characters in this episode.) The dynamic between Velocity, Alex, and Amy is pretty solid with each of them retaining their personalities from the video games while also fitting in some new ones that make them play off of each other very nicely.

Hopefully, the full script (or better yet, the ACTUAL episode.) is out there somewhere and someone can finish up what I never got to write.

(I should get going now. It took me nearly an hour to write this...)

TAM Chapter 1

What most people of Seoul don't know is that there is a tall, tall building that is seen as a place you would assume has a few businesses renting it out. Maybe an apartment building? A doctor’s office if you will? That's exactly what you should think, but to those who venture inside are greeted by mysterious men and inviting warm lobby. Those who are even more unfortunate find themselves face to face with a man who the police refuse to seek, to which men envy, and what most of the population would find to be absolutely terrifying. The mafia; a lifestyle in which Min Yoongi has been born into, one he has mastered better than the back of his hand. Ignorant to the rest of the world seven men gather into a large meeting room, surrounded by a deep wooden chair and a long table.

“Okay, now let’s get this done and over with. I want updates on the Santori contract, new recruits, the arms deal bust, the new building, and the oh yes- THE LOST SHIPMENT!” Yoongi yelled out while slamming his fists on the table. The younger members looking rather shaken.

“I got the updated contracts this afternoon, but I need you to look it over just in case you don’t like anything.” The older man spoke. Jin the second consigliere and Yoongi’s 3rd in command, in charge of many things but business deals are his game. Don’t let the handsome face fool you, he switches from sweet to feared with the quick and unfazed pull of a trigger.

“That’s fine, I’ll look it over after. Did you end up buying that restaurant by the way? Because I’ve been thinking maybe we can have it as the recruitment front.” Yoongi responded casually, reaching for his glass of scotch. A drink much needed for this kind of work.

“Yeah I did, French cuisine. But I don’t want them touching the food.” Jin responded with a quick wit and a signature smirk.

“That’s fine, speaking of them, what’s the update with them, Hoseok?” Yoongi asked, eyeing the man on the other end of the table.

“We have five new ones that passed the first tests and training. We have Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huengkai.” he listed off, looking at his paper of notes. Hoseok; soldier in charge of combat training, recruits, and leader of the younger members. A goofy charm that can melt metal but doesn’t piss him off, the last one to do that was found at the bottom of Daechung Lake.

“Alright, I’m trusting you on that. Have them ready by the next monthly shipment. Jimin and Taehyung help him train the new ones. Speaking of Taehyung, I heard you sniped out the drug deal downtown from the Lee Brothers gang. I have a bottle of brandy with your name on it, my friend.” Yoongi said proudly, raising his glass to him before taking a drink.

“Thanks, man.” Taehyung's low voice rumbled, juxtaposed with his wide smile. Coincidently, the same smile he has on his face every time he snipes to kill, you’ve got your finger on the trigger, but your trigger fingers mine, kind of guy.

“I helped, you're sharing” Jimin chimed in, smacking him on the back and cracking his neck. Park Jimin; a man of many talents, that is if you count being able to beat 5 men to death within 6 minutes flat. Yes, he’s timed it for fun. Sadists, am I right?

“Get me some too Hyung,” Jungkook whispered across from them. Jungkook; youngest member and I'm good at everything: arson, hand to hand combat, and a manipulative little shit. Don’t let the sweet face fool deceive you.

“Now, for more important things... Who dropped the ball on THE SHIPMENT YESTERDAY BECAUSE I KNOW DAMN WELL IT WASN’T ME. THE LAST THING I NEED RIGHT NOW IS MY GUYS MAKING ME LOOK BAD, SO WHO THE HELL FUCKED UP?!” Yoongi began screaming and slamming his hand on the table. A look of fear spreading to each face in the room. Each one gulping the surplus of air caught in their lungs.

“I got the call before the meeting started, the driver got in an accident and they didn’t find the replacement driver until it was past our request time but they have the product. Its five minutes away as we speak.” Jimin spoke bravely, making sure his voice did not shake in front of his boss.

“Alright, I’m letting it slide but I want your ass talking to those people and getting every detail, we can’t afford a slip up now, not with everything going on. Check the shipment more than usual, I want nothing suspicious happening. Now everyone go, I'm tired of being around people.” Yoongi huffed, turning his chair around, admiring at the fact that there was such a big empty space on the wall. An artist's dream, a beautiful blank canvas of mahogany waiting to be hidden away with vibrant hues. She should love that.

“Except you two, Jungkook and Namjoon. We have some business to talk about.” Yoongi spoke, making only the side of his face visible past the chair.

“Is something wrong sir?” Jungkook asked hesitantly, walking back to the other two men.

“No, quite the opposite really,” Yoongi muttered, turning his chair back around and clasping his hands.

“You know what this is about?” Jungkook asked confused, sitting next to Namjoon.

“Of course, I know everything” Namjoon spoke matter of factly. Kim Namjoon; the highest IQ of the team, incredibly smart and know everything about everyone. Commonly seen as the tall intimidating figure that can spill your biggest nightmares into the real world. Be careful with him.

“So Jungkook, being you're the youngest, you have so much to learn. You've shown loyalty to this family for years just like your father, for that, I've made a decision. I see a lot of myself in you which makes this a little easier, but you are the next in line to lead the family. BUT you still have so much to learn and I'm not planning on going anywhere anytime soon so don't expect to be the king overnight but you are next, nonetheless. I have a confidential thing happening now and this is to be seen by no one but the closest meaning Namjoon, Jin, and you. Namjoon will be training you on everything about researching and basically knowing everything about what we are dealing with. Namjoon, brief him.” Yoongi rolled his wrist to his direction, sitting back and setting his feet up on the table.

“As of 10:39p.m. last night, Yoongi and I were scoping out a new potential headquarters setup uptown, on the east side. The building was putting on an art gala when Yoongi came across a woman whom he feels needs optimal protection and security. It is our job to watch, follow, and ensure her safety. On top of this, we need to know absolutely everything about her; medical records, childhood, previous romanc-”

“Basically, I am entrusting you to protect her without question.” Yoongi cut him off with a grunt.

“So, we spy on a girl for you?” Jungkook slowly drew out in confusion. This caused Yoongi to grow very annoyed and Namjoon to smack him on the back of the head.

“Ow!” he whined, rubbing the back of his head.

“If you’re not going to take this seriously I can go for my second option, I mean Taehyung is a great shot an-”

“I’ve got this, where do we start Joon?” Jungkook cut Yoongi off, Taehyung gets enough praise. It was Jungkook’s time.

“Let’s go, phase one has already started. Yoongi just text me when you’re ready.” Namjoon called while getting up.

“So someone is buying your sculpture for 1 million won?! Who is it? Are you going to meet? Ask them if they want a sugar baby because trust me when I say, I AM AVAILABLE!” Irene screeched in my face, the rest of the people in the cafe clearly gawking at her words. If the coffee isn't hot enough, the heat from my flushed face will simply reheat it. I myself am already in shock that someone wants to buy my work, let alone pay that much for it. I’m finally going to be able to pay rent on the apartment.

“Hello? Come back down to earth, before I take your place.” she laughed, waving a hand in front of my face, putting my coffee back down.

“What. Oh, yeah haha! I should really start getting ready, I can’t look like a dump when I’ve got a potential date with my sugar daddy!” I laugh back, grabbing my bag and picking up my coffee.

“And you really don’t know who it is?” she asks again.

“Nope, all the curator told me is that the person wanted to keep their identity anonymous until I meet them in person,” I reply, shrugging my shoulders and beginning to walk away.

“Well have fun! Don’t do anything I wouldn't do! Wink wink.” she yelled out to me.

“Oh, believe me, I wouldn’t do half the things you would do.” I laughed, closing the coffee shop door behind me.

Sonic Forces is Good

Sonic doesn't really slot into any of the semi-nebulous interests that this blog has previously covered but I just had to make an exception because I have thoughts on the blue blur's new game, especially in light of everyone going crazy for Mario Odyssey and the fact almost all professional reviewers as well as various critics on youtube have been basically taking a wrecking-ball to this game. Sonic fans themselves are left mostly enjoying the game (if the subreddit is any indication) and kind of sheepishly acknowledging the pretty low metacritic scores with a bit of a shrug--a pose any true Sonic fan has gotten used to taking in the past decade. I want to talk just very briefly about the problem with Sonic in 2017 and anytime past the year 1998 really and why perception of his non-side-scrolling games seem critically flawed and misguided...

First of all, 3D Sonic has basically always been a mess. Now I should mention before getting deep into this, Forces is my first Sonic game since Sonic Heroes and Sonic Advance 2, the former of which wasn't even as fun as the flawed SA2 and the latter of which should be considered Sonic 5 (or 6 if you count Sonic CD) for all I care, in that it is an excellent expansion of OG Sonic style (shit like grinding on rails, updated Sprites and even Amy as a playable character were great additions). Those two games though are indicative of the whole series: the 3D ones are always problematic while the 2D ones don't seem particularly hard to make well.

I think there is a big range of how fans and critics view the series, but it seems as if the 3D games are either held to the standard of Adventure 1 and 2, which were always pretty flawed games, or else held to some non-existent and unattainable standard. But we should be clear: Sonic never had his Super Mario 64. Adventure 1 comes close, and that game does a lot very well, but it introduces a lot of things which would plague the 3D games forever. I'm mostly talking about the fact A1 and A2 are want to have all these additional playable characters besides Sonic and yet, Sonic (or Shadow) levels are always clearly where the best level design and most fun is to be had.

Why force characters like Big the Cat or E-102 Gamma down our throat, when almost all the Sonic levels are amazing compared to levels where you shoot at things or hunt for emeralds. Like extra characters are kind of intrinsically fun when your a kid, but it always felt a bit like padding to me to play the Tails/Eggman and Knuckles/Rogue levels in SA2. So the gold standard for the 3D games becomes about 1/3rd of the content in the first two games?

What I'm trying to say is that Sonic Team never knew exactly what they were trying to achieve with these games it seems. It's like they continued the tradition of Sonic 2 and 3 with Tails and then Knuckles being added by eventually just adding a shit ton of characters to every game, effectively diluting the experience. I'm not even a big fan of Mario 64, but clearly that game is critically lauded, whereas the Blue Blur just couldn't seem to make that same transition. Heroes is literally all about adding characters, along with bright, colorful presentation which barely masked the weakened level-design. Then beyond the critical face-plant that is Sonic ‘06, Sonic Team's goals with these games seem even more unclear than ever and the warm embrace of 90s Sonic seems further away then ever before during the past decade or so.

You have a couple of weird "story book"-style spin offs on the Wii like the Black Knight and Secret Rings which really push the boundaries of what a Sonic game can be (seemingly to mostly bad reviews), Sonic Unleashed, which is literally split between somewhat traditional 3D gameplay and the kind of totally different style of gameplay a la non-Sonic levels in the Adventure titles (werehog Sonic...) and then a few games that seem to be headed in a more stable direction: Sonic, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations and to a slightly lesser degree, Sonic Lost World .

Like I said, I haven't played any of these since Heroes, but I've been reading up and looking at all of Somecallmejohnny's videos on youtube to get a sense of how people feel about these, and these last 3 seem to be on the up-and-up in terms of critical reaction from both critics and fans. But Generations was in 2011 and since then it's been mostly an onslaught of Sonic Boom games and I'll do us all a favor and gloss over those completely. While Lost World tweaks things a bit with a run-button, Colors and Generations built on the more traditional half of Unleashed and heavily featured the boost mechanic which lends itself to a new kind of level design which is considerably different than that of Adventure 1 and 2.

I guess the long-winded point that I'm trying to make is that Sonic Team has basically been having an identity crisis since 1998. Not a single one of these stands as a true precedent for the series in that the best of their lot--Generations-- is still one of those meta, self-aware entries since it combines modern and classic sonic, quite literally. I do really wanna play those last 3 I mentioned because they seem like they are on the right path, but I'm sure for every fan, there is still a disappointed nay-sayer.

This leads me to my final point though, and that is that Forces, for me personally, is a pretty damn good idea of what 3D Sonic is. I think people were putting a lot of pressure on it since it's been a while since a true 3D entry that wasn't a Boom spin-off, but also because of Manias success. Mania from earlier this year was really great, but it's great in a mostly regressive way. Yes, the four new levels are fantastic and Christian Whitehead did a awesome job of capturing the "magic" of the first 3 games while refining things like the controls and amount of sprite-frames and adding some cool extras as well as those dope Chaos emerald bonus zones, but the success it had is based off of design-principles from nearly 25 years ago.

I can't complain at all, because it's a really fun game and a great way to revisit classic vibes and levels, but I hope it's the beginning of a sea-change for Sonic Team's approach and not just a blip. Mania 2 for instance could revisit/remix the underrated Advance trilogy, or Sega could grow some balls and let Whitehead and other fan-developers like him step up to the plate and either design a full fresh side-scrolling entry OR something like oh I don't know Sonic Adventure 3?

Either way, the game generated a lot of hype which Sega capitalized on by dropping Forces a few months later. And me and like half of hard-core fans are pretty happy with the game and that's about it. Same old story since SA2: new 3D game comes out, gets mediocre reviews, half the fans are on-board while the other seem even more disappointed than professional critics. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of what Sega should be doing with their 3D games, but no one can really agree.

Well I for one think Forces is on the right track. It's not perfect, but it's not really trying to be the next big game (they make that clear every single time they release a 3D title that isn't SA3). It's only 40 USD which I think denotes that it's to played in-tandem with Mania, so you got your classic Sonic on one hand, and your new-fangled and always-problematic-to-somebody 3D Sonic on the other. Also it's worth noting that I play this on the Switch. I think the Switch magically makes any game better for being played on it, and yeah I can't really imagine playing this on PS4. The option of portability makes any game better IMO, and Switch just adds this x-factor to any game right now, I can't totally explain it (will write another post all about it).

The game hold ups though, and beyond the novel trifling that is the character-designer/OC, the level-design is better in my opinion than most are letting on. I'm not sure yet if anything comes close to my personal gold-standard for 3D Sonic levels (Radical Highway and City Escape) but the sense of speed is often phenomenal, but I don't think there is any more of those moments where you are forfeiting control than there has always been since even the Genesis games, which is something I've seen some critics complain about. I admit I was slightly taken back by the locked camera, and often-times narrow corridor-esque levels, but once I got the hang of it, I realized that this is a more faithful translation of classic Sonic into 3D than the more free-roaming styled levels of Adventure games.

People seem to get mad when there's too much precise platforming in Sonic (Marble Ruins..) just as some assail it for feeling like an auto-scroller at other times. It's like fans approach the series with the same confused priorities that Sonic Team themselves have sometimes displayed. I like the generally arcade-y feel of the levels though and re-visiting them for the purposes of refining my runs/time is enticing in the way it was back in the Sonic/Shadow levels in SA2.

Sonic is a weird, platypus of a genre unto himself: Neither pure platforming, racing or trick-based sports game a la Tony Hawk/SSX, he is all of these things and none of them at the same time. And I think these levels capture that excellently. What he isn't are slow and awkward Emerald-hunting levels or shoot-em-ups, but Sonic Teams seems to always shoot for more diversity in game-play than just Sonic levels would allow for, and that's where the Avatar levels come in, retaining the style and speed of the Sonic levels, while also expanding it slightly with Ratchet and Clank-style gun-play that seems to stand-in for awkward shit like the Eggman/Tails levels in SA2. And yeah this does mix it up nicely.

Something else I've been seeing is that it's too easy and the levels are too short, and I just hope people are playing this on Hard mode (the requisite for hard mode is simply if you have played Sonic before according to the game itself). Other criticisms I've seen simply don't resonate, like people complaining about the controls of the Sonic levels, which just did not stand-out to me as being something I noticed. I like the variety of 2D and 3D, and think it strikes a good balance.

So yeah, I basically just wanted to write this big ass post to explain why I think it's good and why other people should STFU, basically. Sonic isn't Mario, and never had been. His games are not explicitly all-ages, timeless crowd-pleasers. His games have always been faux-edgy, psuedo-platforming/racing hybrids that click hard with some and leave others cold. They are also explicitly for kids in a way that Mario games aren't, and it's a kind of complicated point but I think professional critics should take into account this shit was never designed for a 30 year-old to enjoy. That's literally why Mania exists. A 10 year old now-a-days might enjoy Mania, but a lot of that game nearly amounts to being a joke that someone born after 1999 couldn't really get.

So, basically I'm all for trying new things, perfecting a formula that never quite existed and honing in on the good parts of some of the first Sonic games, and I think that's what Forces does. Also the story is sick. Some Sonic fans actually get caught up on the story which is insane to me because its like following the plot of a Tom and Jerry cartoon, but this shit hit some fan-service high-points for me (great cast of characters that mostly glazes newer shit and honors OG Adventure 1 and 2 shit, a slightly "darker" tone, Classic Sonic seeming chill af compared to real Sonic, and cameos from old-school bad guys, for instance). So that shouldn't be a factor in your review if your over the age of 9, is what I'm saying, but I actually dig it despite that.

Yes, it could be improved upon, but I think it’s an excellent starting point for the developers to build on, so hey why not add Whitehead to this team, as well as few of the level-designers from the other Boost games (Colors, Generations, Lost World), refine the controls and level design a bit and BAM, you got yourself a worthy candidate for the true, long-awaited Sonic Adventure 3 that all true fans have been waiting for forever (even though the Adventure games weren't perfect to begin with so this is a wish that contradicts my other points but still). What I think I'm saying, is if this is what they can do in a $40 title with a relatively small dev-team from what I've read, then what can they do when they go all in? Or are they too scared? Well these reviews might scare them off from even trying again and that's what I'm worried about, but Sega needs to grow some balls, and go all-in for the next release and lay-off the Pachinko-onslaught, or at least funnel some of that Pachinko-gold into developing the next game. Like I said, Sonic isn't Mario, and he doesn't need to be, or need to have games like the big cross-generational 3D Mario games that come out every 5-8 years or so. But you know he could if he wanted to, and I think Forces shows a pretty good way forward. Until then, try opening your heart to the Blue Blur if it's been a while-- who knows, you might just be surprised. Smell ya later, dreamerz~

Chapter 12 - Here Comes Baby Blue

Emily - 38 Weeks

Poppy - 34 Weeks

Birthing classes were weird. Harry kinda hated them. He felt awkward. Maybe it wasn’t the classes themselves that were weird... Maybe it was just the fact that he was there with two very beautiful, very pregnant women. And everyone started at him. And the teacher used one of those airy voices that made the whole process sound like a walk in the park, until she said things like, “Your vagina will more than likely tear as your baby enters the world,” which made the whole room cringe.

They’d been going to these classes for five weeks now. This was supposed to be the last one, and Poppy thanked God every week that she didn’t have to do this the natural way. The doctors had been able to stop her labour a few months ago, but not before the contractions got worse, which only made her more grateful that she didn’t really have to do it again.

“OK, I want everyone in the room to focus on their breathing,” the teacher said. “That’s Dad’s too please… On my count 1...2...3… In, hold aaaaaand out….. Very good …. Now Mum’s , I want you to visualise the birth of your baby, imagine your cervix opening…..”

At that, Emily started laughing but she hid it behind a cough. Poppy couldn’t tell if it was nervous laughter or if she really found this whole thing funny.

“I’m sorry, Emily” the teacher said, drawing her eyebrows together sternly, “can I help you?”

“Sorry,” she coughed, flushing under the teacher’s gaze, “Can I be excused?”

“Go ahead,” the teacher responded, pointing to the doorway.

Emily got up and quickly left the room. Harry turned to Poppy, looking concerned.

“I’ll go check on her,” Poppy said

“I’ll go,” Harry kissed her on the forehead “You visualise your cervix…. Or something.” He smirked and stood up to walk out of the room. He found Emily standing just outside the door, holding on tightly to her stomach.

“Everything OK?” He asked, putting his arm around her shoulders to help support her weight

“I was laughing”, Em said “and then there was a pain in my stomach and now I think maybe my waters have broken...”

Harry looked around them to see no signs of fluid over the floor “Are you sure?” he asked

“Either that or I wet myself”, Em said laughing breathily as she gestured towards the wet patch on her pants.

“Right,” Harry nodded, drawing his eyes away politely. “Hospital?” he asked.

“Yeah,” Em agreed, scrunching her face up as another contraction took over her body .

“OK,” Harry’s voice started to shake. “OK, I’ll go and grab Poppy and then we can go, yeah”

All that Em could manage right then was a nod.

The room fell silent as Harry walked back in without Emily, staring at him as he made his way to where Poppy was sitting.

“Is she OK?” the teacher asked

“Uh,” Harry said, not really wanting to tell the whole class that Emily was in labour “Yeah, she’s just not feeling well, we’re going to go home”

Poppy looked at Harry for some more information, but he kept his mouth shut until they were out of the room. She felt her stomach drop, what if something bad had happened to Em?

“What’s going on?” she asked as soon as Em was in her sight.

“I’m in labour,” Em breathed shakily

“And we’re going home?” Poppy was confused, home seemed like the wrong place to be going right now

“No,” Harry shook his head. “We’re going to the hospital, I just didn’t want the whole class to know and everyone to panic.”

“Ohh, alright that makes way more sense, do you want me to bring the car around? So it’s easier?”

Harry handed Poppy the keys. “Yes please, I’ll stay with Em.” He turned to Emily who was clutching her belly again, “We should time how far apart these contractions are...”

“About 6 minutes at the moment, I’ve been watching the clock.” She pointed to the ancient looking analog clock secured to the wall opposite them, “And they’re lasting about 1.”

“OK,” Harry nodded, feeling the butterflies in his tummy flutter as though his tattoo was coming to life. “ You’re on top of this then?”

“It’s part of my job,” she said with a wry smile. “Actually, the hospital will probably tell me to go home at this point.” Harry looked at her, confused “Why would they do that? You’re in labour…”

“They don’t like you to show up too early, the maternity ward would be full all the time if everyone showed up as soon as labour starts.”

“Oh, well should we go home then?” Harry said

“Maybe,” she clutched her bump again “Or maybe we should just go and see what they say just to be safe?”

“Ball’s in your court Em, you tell us what to do,” Harry said holding eye contact with Emily, trying to reassure her that everything was going to be OK.

“Ahhh,” she screamed at a painful contraction, digging her fingernails into Harry’s arm. “Fuck it, let’s just go,” she said through gritted teeth.

“Right, Pop’s just pulled up out the front,” he said. “Are you OK to walk?”

She nodded and started waddling towards the door, using Harry’s arm as a support.

“Hope there’s no cameras around right now” she giggled finally feeling the contraction end, “this won’t look great for the cheating rumours...”

Harry shrugged “Poppy knows I’m not cheating on her, that’s all that matters to me.” he said, helping her into the car and securing her seatbelt.

“H, you better drive, you know how I am in London traffic,” Poppy said, switching the car off and handing him the keys.

It helped that the birthing class was much closer to the hospital than either of their houses but that just meant that the traffic was busier and more hectic. Harry couldn’t speed through the city, like he wanted to. He stopped impatiently at each red light while Poppy tried to keep Emily focused on her breathing. When they pulled into the hospital carpark, another painful contraction took over Emily’s body.

“AHHH!” She screamed, “Call my parents, please….. I just want my mum!”

“Yeah, of course,” Poppy said, feeling her heart crumble a little. She knew that feeling, but she couldn’t just call her mum anymore. But this wasn’t about her. This was about Emily so she took a deep breath and said, “Yeah ok, what’s her number?”

“Just use my phone,” Em handed it over to Poppy. “Passcode is 9856.”

Poppy unlocked the phone, found Patricia’s contact card and dialled her number. The ringtone sounded through the speaker as Harry led Em into the doors of the maternity ward.

“Hi Em,” Patricia said cheerily through the phone into Poppy’s ear

“Hi Mrs Wood, it’s actually Poppy Styles here...”

“Oh, hi Poppy, is everything ok?”

“Yeah, yeah everything’s fine, we’re just at the hospital with Em. She’s gone into labour, she asked me to call you, I think she wants you here.”

“Oh! Oh my goodness of course, I’m on my way, which hospital are you at?”

Poppy could hear her moving around then, the jingle of keys coming off a hook, the front door opening. “We’re at Portland, Pat.”

“Oh the fancy one... ” Poppy could almost hear her next thought as though she’d said it out loud, Well la-di-da, it’s nice for some

“Ah, it’s also the private one, where Harry’s fans can’t harass her.”

“I never thought of it like that, it’s going to take me about an hour to get there”

“That’s ok, we’ll stay with her”

“Thank you” Patricia said, hanging up the phone.

Hours passed and Emily was still in the early stages of labour. The doctors said this was normal for a first baby, but Em was getting tired, her body was getting weak and all she wanted to do was have a nap. Harry and Poppy had decided to give Em some time alone with her mum, they felt a little like they were invading her privacy at this point in the labour.

“We should go and pick Oli up from daycare,” Poppy said as they sat in the cafe near the hospital. “Tell him what’s about to happen so he can be prepared.”

“Good idea,” Harry nodded .“I’ll call Gem and ask if she wants to stay the night with him?”

“Oh shit!” Poppy said. “I should tell Addie, I don’t want her coming back this week though...it’s her last week with this family.”

“You should still tell her” Harry said

“I know, but she’ll jump straight on a train, maybe I’ll wait until he's here”

“Good idea” he nodded “Alright, should we go enjoy the few hours with Oli as our only child?”

The daycare was chaotic when they arrived. Oli’s class was running around outside for the first time in a few days since it had been raining and they were all running wild.

“You’re early today” His teacher, Sarah said as they walked through the door

“We’re having a baby” Harry grinned

Sarah looked straight to Poppy “You? Or….”

“Em” Poppy said immediately “A few more weeks for me yet”

“Thought we’d get Oli early today, spend some quality time with him before everything gets hectic”

“Oli’s so excited to be a big brother” Sarah said “He told the whole class about his two babies at news time today, told us their names and everything”

Poppy’s heart swelled with pride “He’s going to be a good big brother”

“Well he told us he’s going to change all the dirty nappies, so you’re in luck”

“I might hold him to that” Harry laughed

Oli had spotted his parents from the corner of the playground and came running up to them

“Mummy Daddy you’re so early there’s still much playtime left today”

Harry knelt down so that he was Oli’s level “Hey buddy” he said softly “ Mummy and Daddy are here early because you’re about to be a big brother”

“Is mummy having her baby?” he asked, looking up nervously at Poppy

“No” Harry shook his head “Emily is”

“So my brother Oscar is coming?”

“He is!” Harry grinned “but not for a few hours yet, Mummy and Daddy thought we could go out for some nice ice cream this afternoon”

Oli paused for a second, thinking about what his dad had just told him “I think I just want to meet my baby brother”

“He wants to meet you too Ol” Poppy said, trying her best to get to his level but it was hard with the bump in the way “But he’s still on his way”

“Ok” Oli nodded, pulling on his lips like his dad does when he’s nervous “I like chocolate ice cream”

Poppy and Harry both giggled “let’s go get some chocolate ice cream then” Harry said.

The ice cream parlor was Oli’s favourite place in the world, he always got so excited when they got there and he’d even made friends with some of the staff there. Today he strutted in and told them that he was about to be a big brother. The cashier gave Poppy a strange look but continued to ring up their ice creams as she muttered something under her breath about not getting paid enough to care.

“Mum” Oli said when they sat down “When’s your baby coming?”

“In a few weeks” Poppy said “You’ll get to meet your brother before your sister”

“They’re not twins are they? Because Will and Ned are twins and they have the same birthday”

“They’re just almost twins” Harry chimed in, “Like brothers and sisters that are the same age”

“But I won’t be the same age?” he asked

“No, you’ll be 5 and they’ll be one” Harry said, almost immediately thinking it will confuse him

“But they’re not born on my birthday?”

“No” Poppy said, wincing at a slight pain in her stomach “You’ll have your own birthdays”

“Are you ok?” Harry asked

“Yeah” Poppy said weakly “Yeah, she’s just doing somersaults in there”

Harry looked at her suspiciously, she never winced that much when the baby moved “She must know her brother is on his way” he said, not wanting to make a fuss and freak Oli out.

“Dad, maybe we should take mummy home” Oli said, a worried look on his face. “She looks like she needs a rest”

“I think that’s a good idea buddy” Harry said, “But before we go I have a question for you”

Oli looked at Harry expectantly as he shovelled his last spoonful of ice cream into his mouth

“How would you like to stay at Aunty Gemma’s house tonight?”

“Are you tricking me?Oli asked, trying not to get too excited

“No” Harry shook his head “Mummy and Daddy will have to go back to see Em at the hospital while your sleeping”

“I love my Aunty Gem” Oli nodded confirming that he was happy to have a night away from his Mum and dad.

“Alright Ol,” Poppy said, packing the last of Oli’s clothes into his overnight bag “Have you got everything?”

“Yep” he nodded enthusiastically, while he picked out his favourite toys to take with him “I even packed my lego”

“Did you remember to pack Itchy?”

“I never forget Itchy mum” he said, a hint of five year old attitude in his voice.

“Ok then” Poppy winced mid-sentence when her second pain of the afternoon overtook her “Should we go?”

Oli nodded and hummed in agreement.

Poppy’s mind was racing as they made their way to Gemma’s house, and the tightening pains in her stomach only got worse. 34 weeks was still too early to have this bub, better than 27, but still not long enough to keep her safe. And today was Emily’s day, Oscar’s day. Poppy didn’t want to take that away from them. But as each shooting pain got more intense she knew she wasn’t going to be able to keep it a secret much longer.

“Walk in your rainbow paradise….” The first lyrics of Adore you echoed around the car and Poppy knew she wasn’t going to be able to keep her contractions a secret now.

“Mummy this is daddy’s song and you’re not dancing” Oli said from the back seat, throwing his hands in the air while Harry sang along.

“Yeah Mummy” Harry said accusingly

Poppy sighed and turned the music down “Now don’t freak out” she said “But I think I’m in labour too”

It took everything within Harry not to slam on the breaks at that point, but he took a deep breath and tried to overcome the shock.

“Ok” he said slowly “Do we have time to drop Oli off or am I going to the hospital now?”

“They’re not going to be able to stop it today H” Poppy said “Dr Marshall said that last time,”

“I know” he nodded “so what do you need? Do you need me to drop Oli off, or do you need to go now”

“We can drop him to Gems if we’re going to be quick” Poppy clutched her stomach

“Why don’t we get Gemma to meet us there?” Harry suggested and all that Poppy could muster right now was a nod.

The rest of the car ride was silent aside from Harry explaining to Oli what was happening now. Poppy was wishing that she'd paid more attention in the birthing classes now that she was actually in labour, although she still knew that she wouldn’t be delivering naturally anyway. Which only had her wondering how on earth she was going to look after two newborns and a four year old while she recovered from a c-section.

November 21st, 2017

This is the second of two new entries, which were at one point slated to be one entry. I’m glad they weren’t, since both of them got long as hell. I blame the fact that I’m also chipping my way through a 7 hour video essay on Pokemon for my long windedness. If you don’t remember the one where I caught a Drowzee, I recommend scrolling down. Now’s also a good time to remind you that it’s possible to read the entire thing chronologically, by clicking... well, any word in this sentence, how about. Also the Pokedex in the sidebar.

Now seems as good a time as any to mention what I forgot to in my admitted rush to finish the prior entry - while grinding up Baku, I was also hanging out with friends, and finally actually did the damn thing: Moschops was traded for a Kakuna, and then traded back, evolving it to its final form. This is the second time in my lifetime of playing Pokemon that I've actually used the evolved form of a trade evolution, and the first is my Alolan Golem in Sun which I am still not actually finished with yet, largely due to this playthrough superceding it as a priority in my mind, and also because, maybe it's just me but that game's pacing really falls off by the time you're on Poni Island. Not that it was really well paced to begin with, but-- oh, bugger, I'll save this all for when I nuzlocke that game. Uh. If I get there. Maybe I'll be so put off by how much I hate 2nd Gen that I'll simply not get to 3rd. (That's probably not true, I love 3rd Gen so much, I'll slog through garbage to get to it.)

Anyway yeah, I have rad friends and I love them very much and so I have a Machamp now. Weird! I've used Machoke before, but never actually Machamp.

Blaine's gym is the next one, and I actualy have notes on it beyond "the gym trainers were easy." As the series progresses, gyms will become more elaborate - here, they're just. Walk in a straight line, walk in a straight line and then turn left, rifle through some garbage, cut some trees, follow an "invisible" path, just choose a teleport tile and pray, and the two I'm about to knock out back to back.

Blaine's gym is really weird. I definitely understand what they were going for, but it turned out super strange. So Blaine is like, this researcher professor guy, like not quite Pokemon Professor but he knows his shit and wears a lab coat sometimes and the works. So his gym is a quiz. There's these quiz machines that ask you a question that varies from bafflingly simple, such as "does Caterpie evolve into Butterfree", to just plain baffling, either due to strange wording or ambiguous wording. Like... on the one hand they are clearly meant to test your knowledge that you've gained as you adventured, since you're essentially at endgame territory here. But Blaine isn't the kind of professor that seems to legitimately want to test your knowledge, oh no, his questions seem purposely worded to confuse. For example, the first one, "Caterpie evolves into Butterfree?" On the one hand, yes, one of Caterpie's evolutions is Butterfree... but at the same time, Caterpie DOESN'T evolve into Butterfree. Caterpie evolves into Metapod, and Metapod evolves into Butterfree. The correct answer is yes, but it's not technically accurate. Another question asks if Poliwag evolves thrice, which is false, it evolves twice, but it's easy to count each form - Poliwag, Poliwhirl and Poliwrath - and assume that that matches up with the "3" in the question. Also, in what I can only assume to be translation error, one question manages to not only refer to the Electric type as "Thunder", but also refers to types as "element-types". Super weird.

Anyway, I did all the trivia and also fought all the trainers. Used to Firered, I find the lack of unique overworld sprites for the gym leaders interesting. I didn't even realize it was Blaine I was next to until I saw that there was no quiz machine behind him. Of course, with my Nessie and Cingu, the gym is no issue at all. I brink Moschops in too for his rock move, and Wakinyan just in case things got hairy, which they did not - I beat him handily.

Speaking of being beaten handily, the final gym has this mystery behind it, but I appreciate that before you are face to face with his widow's peaked mug, you have every opportunity to guess that the final gym leader is Giovanni of Team Rocket. The "Champ in the making!" dude tells you he uses ground types - and Giovanni, excepting his Kangaskhan, uses Nidoqueens and Rhyhorns and such consistently. That, and the puzzle here is the same pushing tiles that were used in the Rocket Hideout - I guess he likes those things? I know we encounter them in the hideout before the gym, but I like to think that it's the other way around. We don't get as much backstory on Giovanni as I'd like, but I like to imagine that he was a perfectly legitimate gym leader before starting Team Rocket, and he used the puzzle tiles the Pokemon League provided for him in his top secret casino hideout just cause they were the same kind of puzzle he liked enough to put in his gym.

As for fighting him... it's a joke. I was a little nervous going in about his powerful last 'mon and its Fissure, but... it's got 30% accuracy and I outspeed it anyway. Giovanni is defeated, this time for the last time. In this game - and this was removed in the remakes since it is counter to his characterization in his later appearances - if you speak to him after beating him, he says he is giving up on crime for good in order to research Pokemon. I think that's compelling and, again, hints at something a little more earnest in his past and in his motivations. Allow me to extrapolate for a moment here: Team Rocket's goals, in the anime and in the games, are consistent: find and capture rare Pokemon by any means necessary. In this game, they are first found in Mt. Moon, where rare Pokemon fossils can be found that can be resurrected at Cinnabar Island; then, the Silph Scope is recovered from them in Celadon, which is used primarily to be able to observe Ghost Pokemon in the Pokemon Tower, where they can also be found holding one of the region's well known Pokemon caretakers hostage. After that, they are in Silph Co., a powerful organization that has manufactured the Master Ball, which can be used to catch any Pokemon with perfect success. While the grunts may be using common Pokemon like Zubat and Rattata, the big boss has typically got Rhyhorn, Kangaskhan, and Nidoqueen, all Pokemon that are either only or most commonly accessible by way of the Safari Zone, where rarer Pokemon are sequestered for preservation.

What if Giovanni's real purpose is to study these rare Pokemon? Not money, nor pride, but simply the pursuit of knowledge? Taken to extremes, sure, but perhaps from his perspective, the real crime is holding these creatures away from researchers (which, as seen in Silph Co., Team Rocket also employs) that can learn more about them. Bam. There's my wild theory of the week.

Anyway yeah I went in without Wakinyan and just wrecked up his face. Hard not to, with Lapras and Penthes and Moschops and Baku. Cingu didn't do much, nor did he need to.

Speaking of Cingu, I then taught him Fissure. Now, normally, I would pretty much ignore OHKO moves. I mean, it'd be fun to give it to Moschops, but since all transferred Pokemon have their hidden abilities, it still would not be a Fissure/No Guard Machamp, so there's no point to that - instead, I gave it to the faster Cingu, after a bit of research. You see, I did not realize until around 24 hours prior to the time of this writing when I has beaten Giovanni's gym that the X Accuracy was changed in Gen 3. In Gen 3 onwards, which are the only generations I've played extensively, the X Accuracy is a very situationally useful item in a set of items that are essentially like Hardens, Howls, and Focus Energys that you can pay for. Those same moves aren't really that useful either, since far better moves like Swords Dance and Agility are just plain better versions of them. X Accuracy is probably the best of the set since it actually increases your own accuracy by a stage, allowing the effects of moves like the obnoxious Sand Attack or Minimize to be negated or at least mitigated... but since the overwhelming majority of attacks hit 100% of the time, and if you've been sand attacked then using the X Accuracy only gives them another chance to fling sand in your face, the usefulness is not exactly on the level of say, Potions and Pokeballs.

Except, things are a little different in Gen 1. You see, when an X Accuracy is used on a Pokemon in battle in Gen 1, it makes all of its moves hit perfectly every time until it is switched out or fainted. All of them, bypassing accuracy checks a la Swift, which I believe means it isn't even able to fall prey to the dreaded 1/256 glitch, which makes 100% accuracy moves miss one out of every 256 times. Including one hit KO moves like Fissure. (As a side note, this may also be handy with Thunder, which has only 70% accuracy - if it becomes a perfect hit then I'm far more confident of Wakinyan's ability to sweep Lorelei, at the least.)

Which, obviously, is ridiculous. Of course, Fissure only has 5 PP... but I've also not used a single one of the limited Ethers, Elixirs, etc. that the game provides. And with the exception of Dingus, every member of the Elite 4 has 5 Pokemon. (Of course, almost all of them also have a Flying type, and I'm sure SOME of them will outspeed Cingu, which should make Fissure fail regardless.) So like... basically, it's completely busted but fuck me if I'm not gonna take advantage of it. I'm already taking advantage of how busted Slash is. Honestly I'm gonna be sad to push Cingu through the Bank, since it's gonna go from utterly disgustingly broken to like... a normal Pokemon, basically.

Anyway then I slept, woke up, and played more Pokemon.

Now, at this point, I could go to Victory Road. But. Some unfinished business first! The Seafoam Islands are a fairly simple dungeon, with a Strength boulder dropping puzzle that's fairly memorable. Also there's a bird at the end. I murdered this bird, since I couldn't catch it. It actually brought Moschops to fairly low health. Serves me right for trying to use my 4x effective move that just happens to be on my "weak to flying" Pokemon.

NOW I'm ready for Victory Road, except for the fact that I absolutely forgot that there was a rival fight on Route 22 as you're headed for the Pokemon League. I was all healed up anyway, and I don't need to box anyone since he's got 6 Pokemon by now (but apparently no Fire Stones, lol - really, still Growlithe?), but I was still caught off guard, which I'm sure is the point.

Moschops handles Pidgeot and Rhyhorn, which hurts bad enough to switch him for Wakinyan, who, not gonna lie, is basically literally only here to OHKO this Gyarados. Nessie beats Growlithe but Alakazam puts it to 40 health, the lowest any of my Pokemon has been in a long while. Baku has the psychic resistance, so he finishes off Alakazam and then hits Venusaur for super effective damage, but I switch back to Wakinyan to finish him off.

I heal at home and NOW I'm actually going towards Victory Road.

First though, I run around in the grass on Route 23 for a wee bit before realizing that the only Pokemon I can find there are Sandslash/shrew, Sp/Fearow, or Ditto, all of which I still have living. I then think to fish, but I don't have my rod with me. Ah well, can't be arsed.

Victory Road! It's a road made of victory!! Let's see what EXCITING NEW POKEMON await us in this, our final dungeon of the-- oh. Zubat. It's a Zubat. I just caught another Zubat. ts name is Desmod, but it might as well be... Box 1. Cause that's where it'll be living. (Actually Box 2 though, I think.)

The dungeon here isn't actually that tough. The encounter rate is high enough that I got annoyed and put up some repels, but all that'll do is make grinding go a bit faster because you KNOW I'm not gonna fight the Elite 4 until everyone's AT LEAST Level 50. The trainers in here, to their credit, are reasonably tough. One Tamer in particular hurt me pretty bad with his sequence of Psychic types. I tried not to leave too often, since, at the very least, doing so would reset puzzle progress and drain max repels, but I did after this dude. Dig still takes me near Rock Tunnel. I literally haven't healed anywhere other than home since Rock Tunnel, lol. That'll change soon, I bet.

While here, I battled Moltres, the last of three legendary birds. As promised, I'll now discuss my thoughts on legendaries, because I quite frankly think that they're ruddy genius... in this game, and less so increasingly as the series progresses.

In this game, there are 4 legendary Pokemon - the three legendary birds and Mewtwo. Mew is a mythical and I'll talk about those another time, but legendaries are a distinct thing. In this game, despite all being birds except for the edgy one for whatever dumb reason, they are absolutely fantastically executed. Pokemon is a game that revels in boss fights - most routes have the strongest trainer strategically positioned last in a route, sometimes actively obstructing progress. Your rival shows up to fight you a total of eight times counting his final fight, which comes as a surprise at the end of the long foreshadowed gauntlet of four big bosses fought one after another with no Pokemon Centers inbetween, Team Rocket's leader fights you twice before being the last of eight town-based bosses themed around the elements, and that's not even counting optional bosses like the Karate King. However, all of these fights have something in common - they're all trainer fights.

While the distinction between trainer battles and wild Pokemon battles is not one that DRASTICALLY effects gameplay, it is one that exists. While the core principles are the same, two integral things about wild battles that are core to how they are approached are simply not options in trainer battles: running, and throwing Poke Balls. You can't steal people's Pokemon, but you can catch wild ones, and on occasion that capture is harder than most battles.

As such, legendary Pokemon are essentially the "wild Pokemon" answer to gym leaders. While gym leaders are a tough fight against a smart(ish) trainer with strong Pokemon, a legendary Pokemon is strong and, more importantly, very very hard to capture. I want to be clear, defeating these legendaries is not the hard part. I didn't actually do these bosses as they are intended to be fought, since I killed Moltres and Articuno and I used my Master Ball on Zapdos. But, had I gone the traditional route, I could have been spending 30+ Ultra Balls on EACH of them, and having to be so careful not to kill it or let it kill itself, or to let it kill any of my Pokemon. And this is a serious challenge! And THIS is what legendary Pokemon are for. They are out of the way, optional, very challenging, but rewarding intrinsically, because if you DO do the hard thing and catch them, then you have a powerful Pokemon you can use now. This is in opposition to the extrinsic reward of defeating a gym leader for a badge that allows you to train traded Pokemon to a higher level, to use HMs out of battle, to slightly increase stat growth, or whatever else. Getting handed something for winning a fight is great and makes sense... but with the legendaries, the fight is getting the damn things to stay in a ball, and the reward is the same as the reward for throwing a Poke Ball at a Rattata on Route 1: now you HAVE IT.

Of course... nothing stays good forever. In Gen 2, they introduce roaming legendaries. This is a different type of boss fight that takes place over the course of several fights, and is generally agreed to be way more of an obnoxious pain in the ass without actually being that innovative or fun. Instead of doing a cool dungeon that's hidden away and then fighting through your increasing worry to press onwards rather than resetting... an event flag happens in the story, and then you get to run aroung and do chip damage to a big cat or dog or something.

In Gen 3, for the first time, legendary Pokemon, rather than being hidden and out of the way, are thrust firmly in your face. This is the beginning of a change but, at least it's still a big lump of pain to actually capture Kyogre, Groudon or Rayquaza. While this gen also starts the trend of having more legendaries than it knows what to do with, it also makes up for it by having the most esoteric, "Mew is under the truck" type garbage puzzles in the whole series to get the golem-based Regis.

After this, things go bad quick. Starting in Gen 5 and continuing onwards, even being awkwardly shoehorned into the remakes of Gen 3, legendaries go from something you can seek out if you fancy a challenge or are a collector or want the power that comes with them... to being something that's literally handed to you on a silver platter, and that the game will not progress unless you acquire. This is bad and sucks. We'll get to it later.

Speaking of getting to things later. Next time, I guess... will be the Elite Four. After that, assuming I succeed, I'm gonna do some wrap up stuff. I do want to make some posts on here that aren't simply entries, talking about my overall opinion of Gen 1, my experience with nuzlocking it, and also discussing my opinions on some of the Pokemon found therein, which I will generally try to keep positive, since every Pokemon is someone's favorite and it's better to praise something that someone else might not have thought twice about than it is to criticize something that someone else might love. I may give a passing mention to which Pokemon appeal to me the least, but I would say that there are no Pokemon that I think are completely awful or unworthy of Being A Pokemon. (Also that gap will give me the time to finish Sun and buy an Ultra game which, given that MOST people I know who bought Moon were boring and then also bought Ultra Moon rather than buying Ultra Sun which I would think to make sense, will probably be Ultra Sun cause like, then I can trade my Blacephalon for their Stakataka or whatevs.) And then after that... Gen 2.

So, yeah. This has been an experiment so far and I'm really happy with how it has turned out. I look forward, not just to playing but also to writing each installment, and ideally, you look forward to reading them, even if they are uploaded at really weird times.

I'm gonna update the sidebar when I wake up in the... afternoon. Working overnights weirds time.

Nov. 22, 2017 (pt. 2): being a mom

I never thought that being a mom was going to be easy. I worked at a preschool for 2 years, I knew better. What I didn’t expect was how stressful it was going to be...

I’ve been a mom for almost 2 months now. My daughter’s name is Athena. The day she was born was one of the hardest trials I will ever face in this lifetime. 16 and a half hours of labor all for one 8 lb. little girl. It was completely worth it, and I balled like a baby when the nurses handed her over to me. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder; but I have never seen anything as beautiful as the deep brown color of my daughter’s eyes when she first looked at me...

At the hospital, it was easy. I was there from 250AM on October 3rd (my daughter was born the same day) until October 5th. I was in full-on recovery mode. It took 1 night and a full day for the epidural to wear off, and when it did, I felt like shit. It hurt to move in any way, all I could do was sit (unless I had to use the restroom); which was a catch 22 situation because sitting for too long hurt my ass. But while I was recovering, my husband and the nurses pretty much did everything for me (except feed her). The only hard times we had while I was still in the hospital was trying to get my daughter to nurse off of my left breast.

Once we got home, it was like there was a new crisis every day. First she wouldn’t feed off of my left breast. Once we figured out a solution for that, I started getting horrible pains in my right breast when she nursed. After that issue was resolved, my breast stopped producing enough milk to feed her. On top of all that, I was adjusting to sleeping in 3-4 hour increments, waking up as early as 5AM (when I usually woke up at 10AM), not having any alone time, making sure everyone got a chance to come visit the baby and so much more. There were times when I got so anxious and stressed out, I broke down crying randomly. My mom was worried I would end up getting postpartum depression. But eventually I got the hang of things, and motherhood came naturally. The only thing I’m sad that I couldn’t make work is; I ended up having to switch to formula because I was having too many complications with breastfeeding.

Now when I’m faced with a crisis, I know what thought process to go through before losing my shit. I’ll admit, sometimes I still have those moments of weakness. Some times my daughter won’t sleep, and I end up being awake for 12 hours straight, only to sleep for 2 hours before she wakes up again. Sometimes we’re low on money, and I have to give up buying a really expensive dinner (and instead substitute it with ramen noodles) to buy formula so the baby can eat. But when I’m holding my baby and she smiles at me-- all of the troubles I face just fade away. No matter what kind of struggles or sacrifices I have to face for this child; seeing her smile at me makes it all worth it.

To anyone who is thinking about having kids in the future, all I can say is this: Be prepared to give zero fucks about yourself once that baby is born. Because when you get to see your baby for the very first time, when you finally get to hold them after 9 months of waiting... That child becomes the only thing you care about. The only thing that matters. I can’t count the number of times (during the first month) where I bathed my child more than I bathed myself. There were times when I forgot to eat all day because I was so consumed with making sure my baby was being taken care of.

Some people find the concept of loving something more than you love yourself as completely abnormal. But, in my experience, the way I love my child is the most fulfilling feeling I have ever had.
