Y'know what, you're the only person who's asked about this and this has been sitting in my drafts for months and I don't think I'm ever going to develop it past this point, so! I'm just gonna give you the whole thing

Fair warning, I did write this in the midst of an anxiety attack sometime after one in the morning. It's been edited! But that's pretty much the vibe

[CW: ableism, internalized ableism, uh... sexism? is that a thing I need to warn for in omegaverse? I dunno, it pretty closely mirrors real-world misogynistic views, so heads up]

Give me omega Steve who genuinely will never be able to have children. Who is tentatively excited after the Upside Down and Vecna and everything to get out from under his parents' influence and stop taking the harsh, heavy-duty suppressants that he was too young to have ever really been on in the first place and to get to actually be who he is. To get to freely express his designation

And instead he finds out that his body is fucked up and he'll never have a normal fertility cycle and he'll never be able to have kids

Give me Steve being told by a shitty, prejudiced doctor that it's basically all his fault for all the damage he's done to his own body over the years - the head injuries, the broken bones, the mysterious flesh wounds. Clearly these things upset the balance of his Delicate Omega Body and that's why his reproductive system is all fucked up (couldn't possibly have been the extended use of those suppressant drugs during his developmental years, oh no)

And Steve isn't exactly devastated at first, but he does feel ashamed. He only admits what's happened to Robin and no one else, and no matter how indignant she gets on his behalf, no matter how hard she tries to push him to get a second opinion, he refuses. He doesn't want to hear how bad he's fucked up from anyone else, thank you very much

The devastation dawns on him later, in stages. It occurs to him slowly what he'll never be able to do, the ways in which he'll always be othered by a society that often still values omegas for their fertility, the way his dream of a big family has been completely shattered

And it occurs to him that he'll never be considered a good mate, damaged in so many ways, unable to even offer children in exchange for whatever other shortcomings he has - which means that as soon as Eddie starts showing interest in him, he has to shut it down as quickly as possible

Because of course Eddie's going to want a family one day, and Steve thinks he'll be a great alpha and a great dad, and he deserves that - he deserves someone who can give him that, who can give him all the things A Good Omega should. So no matter how much Steve wants to be with Eddie, no matter how safe and at ease he feels around him, he can't let Eddie think he's a viable option, and pulls away

And Eddie - well, look, if Steve really doesn't want him, then he'll respect that. He can take no for an answer. But Steve has never really given him a clear no so much as he just started distancing himself. Making himself unavailable, no longer sitting next to Eddie when the whole group hangs out, no longer unconsciously curling into his side on movie nights, just - ghosting, essentially. And that, Eddie will not take

So he confronts Steve; he's not aggressive about it, of course, but he makes it clear that he's not leaving until he gets a straight answer. Tells Steve he's been getting some real mixed signals, and does he want Eddie or not?

Steve says Eddie doesn't want him. Eddie calls bullshit. Of course he wants Steve, he's never wanted anything, anyone, in his life like he wants Steve

But if Steve can look Eddie in the eye and tell him that he doesn't want to be with Eddie, then Eddie will go

And Steve - he's never been a good liar. Not when it comes to feelings. He's never been able to lie about that, so he breaks down and admits the truth, instead: he's a fucked up excuse for an omega, he can't have kids, he doesn't really even know how to do the social shit omegas are supposed to know how to do, so. There. So Eddie shouldn't want him

And Eddie is horrified. Not because Steve is "broken," but because of all the hurt he's taken on over the years, because of the way he seems to think it's all his fault, because he thinks his only worth as a mate is in bearing kids or caring for others. As if anything like that would put Eddie off - as if Steve has nothing else to offer

It's a slow process, after that, getting Steve to accept that he's desirable for who he is and not what he can do

It starts with Robin and Eddie teaming up on Steve and eventually getting him to go to another doctor, a better doctor, who promises Steve that what happened to his system is in no way his fault. It goes on with constant reassurance, which Eddie never minds providing (dramatic little shit honestly loves the opportunity to wax rhapsodic about whatever he loves, which very much includes Steve), with an unconditional acceptance from the rest of the group, with the realization that Steve already has a big family (and multiple children; like, seriously. how did he miss that. Eddie loves to tease him about it)

And eventually, when they're ready, it goes on still with the promise that they can adopt, or consider surrogacy, or just kidnap their friends' pups (Steve laughs at the last one, but Eddie notices that he doesn't say no). There is no right way to do it, no perfect way; as long as Steve just keeps being himself, Eddie will never be disappointed

What changed Ice Prince Finn back to normal & where did he get a crown from?

Was Finn stealing a baby what ended up changing him as a person in the Farmworld universe? Similar to how Marceline kept Simon prime grounded & humane for a while.

Maybe Jay Mertens (I think that was his name, the eldest son) reminded him of his little brother too.

As for how the crown came back into the Farmworld reality, that would be because of whatever wacky effects are happening from Fionna & Cake going through the multiverse. Scarab was also messing with the multiversal TV's insides.

Going back to Farmworld Finn's little brother, maybe he was the one who broke the crown since I doubt a coward like the destiny gang leader would have been able to do it (or there's some sort of timeline loop going on with a bunch of the crowns that'll get shown later). This is assuming the little brother is alive, but we don't even know that for sure. There is just a lot we don't know.

edit: I see what y'all are saying about the old episode, seems like Prismo didn't wipe anyone's memories, he only made it so the crown would be destroyed. People still remember The Snow Man AKA Ice Prince Finn & what he did with all of that magical power. I also still think Jay Mertens could be the baby at the end of the flashback at the start of the episode.

It is incredibly isolating to navigate through fandom as an aromantic person. Aro experiences are so varied, and there is no definite aro experience that encapsulates the alienation that fandom spaces cause for certain people.

Fandom is mostly built and structured on shipping. And if not, the blorbofication of characters, which tends to go down the shipping pipeline; where does that leave the romance repulsed aro person who genuinely does not want to see any form of shipping? Platonic dynamics, right?

Yeah, sure. But by platonic dynamics, it's only "best friends" or "family" right? Where does that leave the aro folks with undefined labels? No, qprs aren't a get-out-of-jail card.

And qprs- they have no rules or standards set upon them by society, not even having a clear definition for what it is, because not all qprs are the same. Yet, for some reason, it ended up becoming the "nonbinary" option to a lot of people- not romantic or "regular" platonic? Qpr it is, right?

But where does that leave the aro folk who don't want a qpr? Who don't wish to see characters depicted in pairs or trios or so forth- who embrace the lack of a partner?

And these concepts presented; when aro folk talk about them, do you care? And if you do, do you understand? Do you try to?

If you aren't aro, but wish to be supportive, are you a genuine ally? Do you raise the concerns of aro folk you share the space with?

Or do you take a look at these concepts- and decide you understand them "well" enough? Do you decide to speak for aro folks instead?

Do you depict relationships outside of romance because you believe in the importance of platonic relationships? Will you accept the fact that not all platonic interactions will be familial or "best friends"?

Can you accept depictions of qprs outside of "more than friends, less than lovers"? Are you willing to accept it is not just "best friends" or "romance lite"? Will you accept that nothing is inherently romantic- and characters in a qpr may fall under your standards of lovers?

Can you resist the urge to put every character in a pair or trio or group? Are you comfortable with the notion of characters finding more joy in being by themselves, outside of all those lenses you see them in?

It's good if you can.

And if you can't, at the very least, do you understand why some aro folk in your space are upset? Embittered by your favorite ships? Starving for representation?

Did you depict these characters with these concepts with the knowledge that aromanticism is fluid?

An Obikin Fic Rec List!

This has been a long time coming, but I've curated a list of some of my favorite obikin fics. I tried to pick ones that are relatively less "well known" than ones usually recommended, but are no less amazing, so have fun finding some new gems or rediscovering some old ones :)

I also chose only one fic from each author, otherwise this would be impossibly long, so check out everything else from each author too because they're all amazing!

The thought of finding out his true soulmate through a Force vision of some sort sent a thrill through his heart. Anakin was enamored by the very concept of lovers as two halves of the same soul, fitting together perfectly in almost every way imaginable as if they were made for one another. And while Anakin wanted almost more than anything else to know who that person was, he couldn’t fathom it being anyone but Obi-Wan.

→ I might be a bit partial to this because it was gifted to me, but this is one you absolutely must read!! It's got all the sweet moments I adore, all the mushy pining and yearning, and the loveliest way of getting together. Caitlynn is always amazing at writing obikin in a way that feels so sweet and adoring and authentic.

Anakin and Obi-Wan successfully rescued the Chancellor from Grievous and Dooku. Anakin fought against the Sith Lord and won, taking his life at the Chancellor's order.

Now, weeks after being assigned at the Council and asked to spy on the Chancellor, he struggles with his duties as a Jedi while Obi-Wan is gone pursuing Grievous.

The war's end seems to be close, with everyone looking forward to it. And when Anakin is doubting himself the most, an unexpected visit arrives at the Temple.

→ this is the most wonderful RotS fix-it!! It's so creative with the divergence and the added characters (including the QUEEN, Beru), and I absolutely love to see such a good happy AU where obikin work out and Palpatine's plans don't. Tomi is always so great at writing the sweetest and most tender smut that's still so hot as well, and this fic is no exception!!

Perhaps it was one morning when, in the soft light of dawn, Obi-Wan realized that everything he was was irrevocably tied to Anakin. However it started, Obi-Wan knew that he was in deep.

Anakin Skywalker hadn't ever known a time when he didn't love Obi-Wan Kenobi in some way, shape, or form. It had developed from adoration for the man who trained him to be a Jedi into infatuation when he realized how talented and beautiful his master was, and then into a quiet sort of devotion. He couldn't picture a life without Obi-Wan by his side, and he would have to content himself with whatever love Obi-Wan was willing to give him.

→ this is perfect to read if you need some fluff and lovely domestic moments between the boys! It has everything you need: yearning, flower crowns, massages, bathing together, playing with younglings, sparring, and feelings realizations. And some smut too, which Rynae is always fantastic at writing.

→ Soon enough, Obi-Wan's hand migrated upwards to Anakin’s head, resting on top as a calming weight, but almost absent-mindedly beginning to pet Anakin’s hair. Anakin melted into the touch, barely noticing when the Nautolan scoffed and walked away, giving up on tearing Anakin away from Obi-Wan.

“I had the situation under control, you know,” Anakin muttered while trying to savor and memorize the feeling of Obi-Wan’s hands in his hair. He breathed in Obi-Wan and tried to block the rest of the club out, shrinking the world down to only that divine physical contact and the shine of Obi-Wan’s eyes.

Or, 5 times Obi-Wan played with Anakin's hair, and 1 time he realized just how much Anakin enjoyed it.

→ my obikin secret santa gift fic from 2020, which is gorgeous and so adorable!! It's everything I could want and I adore Anakin loving when Obi-Wan touches his hair. Each scene always makes me smile so much whenever I reread, and the smut is absolutely delicious too. Poke is great at writing obikin at their best (and sometimes at their most cursed as well).

This is one of those fics where I always have to keep physically clutching my chest while reading because it makes me feel SO much. Cal is always incredible at showing exactly how Anakin is feeling in a way that is relatable and so very real, with his jumbled mess of confusing emotions and the way Obi-Wan can help him through them.

🍑 Snap, Crackle, Pop by @intermundia

→ Several months into the Clones Wars, Anakin disobeys Obi-Wan's orders during the Battle of Muunilinst and puts himself in grave danger. Returning to his Master, he finds him at his wits end. Obi-Wan asks if Anakin can think of any consequences that would actually work in teaching him a lesson, and is surprised by the answer.

→ smut with Padawan Anakin is always some of my favorite to read, and when he's a brat and it involves spanking, it is ✨perfection.✨ This fic has all of that and more, and it's a perfect glimpse into their relationship, the good and the bad and how they're trying to navigate it!! Will is always amazing at creating a dynamic between them that feels very much like a push and pull, until sometimes Obi-Wan gets all dominant and perhaps loses some control in the best way hehe

I’m in the mood for vampires what can I say?

Warnings: dark content, kidnapping and captivity, blood-drinking and biting, reader is very out of it and it’s reflected in the prose.

You don’t know how long you’ve been here. Kept in this room where the thick velvet curtains are always drawn and the faintest hints of sunlight able to sneak through the gaps on the brightest of days are a fine luxury. The sheets underneath you are soft and silken, clearly of high quality—as is the set of manacles chaining your wrist to the bed frame. 

It is not those that make escape something of a far flung dream however, no, it is instead the arms of your captor that are often locked around you in a vice-like grip in your more conscious moments. He’s holding you now, the dark strands of his hair brushing against the side of your face as he leans down and buries his fangs in your neck.

You barely react to pain anymore, just an almost imperceptible flinch, too used to the sensation and too unfamiliar with your own limbs to do much more. This is all you know anymore, arms and fangs and cold—always so very cold, like every speck of heat has been drained from your body and you are incapable of generating any more. If only you could reach the curtains and pull them open to let the sunlight warm your skin just like—

Like when? Had you ever stood in the sunlight? You could recall the sensation, the lovely way it felt on your skin but any memory you might have had of it is gone, lost to the dust and the dark and the cold. It is so painfully cold in here.

Your captor draws back from your neck, peering at you with eyes that seem to glow violet in the dim light, a smear of your blood darkening the corner of his lips. A slender-fingered hand cradles your cheek with a little too much force to be called gentle. 

“Not long now,” he says, brushing his thumb over the skin of your cheek. “See, I told you you’d get through it just fine, didn’t I?”

Did he? You can’t recall. You think you knew him before the room on some days—on days where you even remember a time before the room at all. In your clearest moments you think you might have been fond of him once. Or maybe you were afraid? Perhaps it was both, before the cold had come and left your insides deadened. 

“You’ll feel better when it’s over, you’ll realize I was right all along.” He leans towards you and kisses you sweetly.

His lips are like ice and taste of blood.

No, you’d told him you didn’t want this. That you wanted him but not the cold and the never-ending night. You pull away with as much effort as you’re able when your muscles are all numb.

“S—Scara—” The rest of his name falls away from you as quickly as your moment of lucidity had come. 

“I’m right here,” he says, wiping away a tear that you do not remember falling down your cheek. “We’ll be together forever now, you’ll never need anyone else.”

He may say that but you feel like you do. Like there are people you want to see so badly your heart may burst from your chest, even if you can’t recall a single one of their faces.

“I—” you try but the cold has seeped into your tongue and your brain and you do not know whether to tell him to go away or come closer so that you may lose yourself in the scent of green tea on his clothes and dream of days gone by where he was not the feature of your very worst nightmares. 

Your chance to ask for either is lost as he pulls away, rolling up one of the sleeves of his fine shirt to reveal a skin so pale it can never have seen the sun at all. Without any sign of hesitation, he brings his wrist to his mouth and sinks his fangs into it while you watch on impassively. 

A drop of dark liquid—darker than the blood of a human had any right to be—runs over his wrist as he draws it away from his mouth and holds it out towards you.

“Drink,” he tells you. The wound looks raw and deep, blood welling up from it freely, yet there’s no trace of pain in his expression as stares at you expectantly. 

You don’t think it’s normal for you to drink blood, even if you have vague memories of going through this same ritual on a number of occasions. And it’s so dark, the same shade as the curtains. If you could just reach the curtains and pull them back to reveal the sunlight then—

“I told you to drink it—” he shoves the bleeding punctures in his skin towards your mouth, “—so hurry up before it starts to heal.”

“I…” What was it you wanted to say?

“What?” he snaps at you.

“Will it take away the cold?”

He freezes, eyes boring into you. “What do you mean?”

“I’m so cold Scara. I don’t want to be cold anymore.” You’ve started crying again, the rolling tears like icicles on your cheeks.

An expression flickers across his features, but in the dark room you can’t tell if it’s one of annoyance or remorse. Finally he looks away and says, “yes, it’ll take away the cold.”

That’s all you need to hear to bring the bloody wound to your mouth and start lapping at it with your tongue. The taste is bitter but you can’t bring yourself to care, not if there’s the slightest chance it could ward off the chill that has crawled so deep inside it might as well be a part of you. 

Scaramouche watches you rapturously, his features softening in a way they never did for anyone other than you. It used to make you so very happy, when he looked at you like. Before he’d asked you to become something inhuman and you’d told him no—only to end up here. Where sunlight could no longer reach you and you were left in the dark and the cold.

Ah, it’s still so very cold.

Herb Guide for Warrior Cats: Epilepsy

A guide to providing treatment to a Warrior Cat OC with epilepsy. Still requires a bit of a leap in logic as nothing can replace our friend phenobarbital, BUT, if you would like herbs and strategies for managing a Warrior’s epilepsy, this guide is for you.

I researched herbs historically used for epilepsy, chose plants growing wild in a ‘common’ clan biome (temperate Europe and North America), and removed things that a cat could not use. Because of the nature of epilepsy, I also delved into some other treatments and strategies your medics can use!

So, keep in mind, this guide is written for a Clan doctor treating an epileptic cat. NOT from the perspective of a patient who has it.

I would recommend doing extra research into first-hand accounts of what it’s like to live with epilepsy when creating your patient character.

What is epilepsy?

‘Epilepsy‘ is the broad term for dozens of different disorders, resulting in recurring epileptic seizures. A warrior could be born with it, develop it over time, or get it after recovering from brain injury (stroke, infection, head trauma, etc).

Epilepsy also varies wildly, and can be so mild it’s hard to detect, or so severe it could put the cat in too much danger to do warrior duties at all. For most cases, however, the warrior would still be able to do normal tasks* as long as they don’t hunt or patrol alone.

* = Head injury and stress from fighting can worsen epilepsy. Going on battle patrols is a risk the warrior must be made aware of.

Diagnostics

So before anything else, your medic will want to identify what triggers the seizures, if anything. There isn’t always an identifiable trigger such as a flashing light/quickly moving object, but seizures can be made worse by stress, lack of sleep, or hunger. Taking note of the warrior’s state preceding a seizure would be extremely helpful for treatment.

Does Wheatwhisker seem to have more seizures when she’s doing certain activities? When she has one, did she sleep well the night before? What has she been eating lately? She may be able to feel it coming-- including sudden intense emotion, an oncoming headache, hot or cold sensations, so on.

Like dogs, cats can detect oncoming seizures. A good medicine cat would take note of all the behavior before its onset to reduce their frequency.

NON-herbal treatments

Once correlation and causes have been identified, the medicine cat should have some lifestyle changes to suggest.

For example, Wheatwhisker has more seizures when she is tired, so the medic prevents her from going on dawn patrol. They’re sometimes triggered by the fluttering of bird wings, so she’s been told to hunt small mammals instead.

A change in diet can also reduce the frequency of seizures. Fatty foods specifically, such as red meat, eggs, and large fish. Trout and carp would be the two easiest* things for a warrior to hunt on a regular basis-- though if the given Clan can’t catch those, it may be worth it to consider trade with another group.

* = If your warriors can cook with fire, fat drippings can be cooked back into the epileptic warrior’s meals. This would make the special diet much easier to prepare than always catching specific prey.

Managing the Different Types of Seizures

Generally there are three types of seizures- ones localized to a specific body part, ones that may seem like “daydreaming”, and ones that cause the well-known convulsions. Less severe seizures are more common.

Seizures do not usually cause pain on their own, except for fatigue in the muscle or headaches. Injury is sometimes caused by external forces, such as slamming against something during a convulsion, falls, tongue biting, or hitting sharp objects.

After any seizure, nausea or a headache may develop-- feverfew will soothe headaches, mallow or fennel will soothe stomachaches. Even if the Epileptic warrior does not take regular medication, the cannabis and valerian root mentioned in the ‘preventative herbs‘ section can be taken on occasion to help the warrior relax post-seizure.

-Localized

One part of the body (leg, head) seizes or convulses. Can usually be self-managed by the warrior, loss of conscious is uncommon. Rest in a quiet area would be the best treatment afterwards. If the muscle fatigue is bad, kneading the limb will help.

-Daydream

The warrior will seem suddenly ‘absent,‘ like they’ve left their body, for typically less than 15 seconds. They may simply wobble and stare ahead (even pausing mid-sentence), or seem to ‘faint‘ and fall over, but in any case they will not remember the seizure. Prevent them from falling on something dangerous, if this seems likely.

In many cases the warrior will just be able to keep going about their day in a few minutes, or even immediately. If not, just like before, let them rest in a quiet area.

-Convulsions

A panicked cat may make convulsions worse by fearfully running around as a seizure starts-- if a warrior MUST be prevented from doing this, it’s VERY important that they are not completely pinned or restrained. JUST kept laying down. Do NOT attempt to stop the convulsions themselves.

Such a circumstance will be extremely rare in a Warrior Cat setting, where the cats are capable of reasoning like a human. There may be a situation where an epileptic cat needs to be brought out of harm’s way-- that’s fine.

Clear the area of anything sharp or hard that the convulsing warrior could hurt themselves on, like stones, or brambles. Roll them onto their side, if they aren’t already. Lastly, cushion their head with something soft, like moss, if possible.

After the seizure is over, the warrior will probably be disoriented and confused. Don’t overwhelm them or offer food or water until they’re fully alert again. Once they do, they might have partial paralysis, nausea, muscle soreness, a bitten tongue, or any variety of symptoms. Just like before, bring them to a quiet area to rest.

If your warriors wear restrictive accessories, such as belts or collars, the medicine cat will remove or loosen them during a seizure if possible.

-what NOT to do

There’s some harmful ideas out there you may have encountered, so here’s some things to keep in mind your medics would NOT do to treat a cat having convulsions:

They would NOT pin them down (this even happened in the books once yikes) Why: This could cause injury to both the restrained, and the restrainer.

They would NOT put anything in their mouth Why: Could damage their teeth or jaw, it does not prevent them from biting their tongue. (also; while tongue biting is common, it is a total myth that an epileptic will choke on/swallow it)

They would NOT start firing out questions as soon as the seizure is over Why: The warrior will likely be disoriented, and not in a state to answer properly. Give them a minute.

Preventative Herbs

Once a seizure is happening, it will have to play out. Warrior cats do not have the medical capability to stop one once started. The anticonvulsant herbs here will help to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures... but they can’t eliminate them entirely.

Anticonvulsants will need to be taken on a regular basis. Stopping these suddenly will cause dangerous side effects; if the warrior’s epilepsy isn’t severe, or herbs are a scarcity for your Clan, it may not be the best choice to medicate them.

Chamomile

Common, and naturalized all over the world. In high doses, this herb will poison a cat. Careful preparation is required to make it safe for the epileptic warrior-- it needs to be steeped in water, like tea*. The leaves should not be eaten.

* = If your cats don’t have fire to brew tea, that’s fine, it can be soaked cold.

This herb also has a side effect of drowsiness. It may make the warrior lethargic and less responsive.

Cannabis

Cannabis is a golden herb for a thousand reasons, it can be made into rope, paper, cloth, oil... but, the thing of note here is CBD oil. Cannabis grows wild all over the world, but ESPECIALLY in North America-based Clans (where it’s called Ditchweed)

Ditchweed has high CBD content, and low THC content. This makes it safe for your warriors (and also prevents them from getting high). Your cats will NOT smoke it, which will damage their sensitive respiratory systems, they will eat it like a standard herb.

Because cannabis is a depressant, this treatment is best for warriors not involved in active tasks. Epileptic warriors that prefer calm, camp-related activities will use this herb. Den-building, tunnel digging, helping the medics, crafting if your Clan makes accessories, so on.

Valerian Root
