know your audience

I do a lot of writing and presenting in my day job, and I also mentor other people who do the same job but are newer to it. One piece of advice I come back to again and again is "know your audience."

Not sure what to include in your presentation? Well, who are you presenting to? What will that group care about? What's relevant to them? You should include the things that will matter to them and have an impact on them, and you can skip the stuff that doesn't apply.

This is the same philosophy I apply to tagging on AO3. I don't tend to write stories in order to please an audience, but I do tag them to ensure that the people who click in are the people who will actually enjoy it when they read it.

That means that I tag:

the ship or ships that are the focus of the story

the character or characters who are central to the story

the tropes or plot devices that are important to the plot of my story and that I think someone out there might try to search or filter for (or filter out)

I might tag ships or characters or tropes etc that aren't central to the story if I think there's still enough of them in there that someone who is a fan of those things will still get something from reading my work.

If someone is specifically searching something out, filtering for it etc, then I don't want my story to end up being a disappointment for them. I want it to be a delightful surprise - or at least a generally good time.

Tagging your work in order to get the broadest possible readership means that you're also going to bring in a lot of people who aren't in your audience. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather play to a smaller venue full of friendly folks instead of a packed arena full of people who don't know why they're there.

This is just my own philosophy, of course, and not me trying to force everyone to do what I do. I just hope that this might be helpful to folks who get confused or overwhelmed or uncertain when they're trying to tag their works on AO3.

Thinking about the brothers being "biblically accurate" when they were angels:

Lucifer, the Morning Star, with six wings that burn bright with holy radiance. Two wings cover his eyes, for the Avatar of Humility knows that not even he is worthy enough to look upon Father. Two wings shield his feet from view, though the blinding light makes it impossible to discern whether he has feet at all. The last two wings carry his form in the air, each flutter of his feathers stirring the winds upon the Earth.

Mammon, the newest carrier of Father's throne, whose body is littered in thousands of all-seeing eyes. His body turns in on itself, over and over and over and over, though the rotation is as mundane as breathing. Like his big bro, he is alive with divine fire; The Avatar of Charity shines his light upon all those who seek shelter from the darkness.

Beelzebub, who seldom speaks despite his four mouths. The Avatar of Temperance; with a face of a bull, a second of a man, a third of a lion, fourth of an eagle, yet does not experience the futility of animalistic hunger. Blessed are those who see him, for it means his Father is not far behind.

As someone who lives in Texas (unfortunately) I find it SO FUNNY when people make keith overwhelmingly southern. Like, cmon yall. Texas history 101, the cowboy era ended a long ass time ago, most of us DONT wear cowboy hats anymore. Why the fuck would keith ride a horse???? Nobody does that unless they own horses??? And horses are incredibly expensive???

Like, I understand cowboy aus, and historical aus, but if Texas, in 2024, isn't like that (the stereotypes are so wild) then why would it be like that in approx 2314?

Very few wear cowboy hats or boots. Very few have horses, and NOBODY rides them to school, ffs. Keith is not a farmhand.

Some texas stereotypes that are true, however...

-yeah we say yall nonstop

-ain't, wouldja, couldn't've, etc.

-confederate flag is less common here, normally you see the "come and take it" or the "don't tread on me"

-if keith ever went to public school, 1/3 of his classmates or more are Latino

-most Texans know moderate amounts of Spanish

-we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and most ppl think it's Mexican independence day (it's not)

-barbecue.

-chili WITHOUT BEANS YOU HEATHEN

-will fight over food, family, or football

-either you support the Dallas Cowboys or the Houston Texans. Any other team is sacrilege. Once you make this choice, it WILL have effects on your social life.

-football is basically king here lol, none of the other stuff in school gets nearly the funding

-people living in rural areas (like Keith's dad) often own guns, and not pistols either-- rifles and shotguns, usually

-NOBODY SAYS YEEHAW. at least not unironically

-Texans will ironically say yeehaw, rootin-tootin, etc bc we are aware of our history and think it's wack

-were not all racist, but everyone knows at least one person who is (usually an older family member)

-mind your gotdamn manners at the table. Get those elbows away from your food

-sir and ma'am for strangers

-open doors for old people. You don't have to be a man to do this.

-please and thank you is SO important, people will assume things about you otherwise

-if you don't have a church, you miss out on a lot of community (coming from a non-religious person)

-most people here are Baptist, on that note (Hispanic people contribute to the Catholic population, but still, Baptist is #1)

-internet service is awful unless you're in a city

-we WILL close all schools for 2 inches of snow/ice

-we laugh at hurricanes, and then do our best to help our Houston neighbors

-but everybody hates Houston and Dallas, unless you live there

-most people are okay with Austin, San Antonio, etc

-EL PASO IS TINY, AND HALF OF IT IS IN MEXICO (and is called Ciudad Juárez there)

-beer is god. And God has no problem with drinking. (According to beliefs here)

-gambling is illegal here, but we love it, so states like Oklahoma have built casinos RIGHT ON THE STATE BORDER so that we can drive a bit and gamble as we please

-everybody's dad drives a truck. Otherwise people assume he's got a small pp

i'm watching/listening to batman:the audio adventures season 2, and i love this version of scarecrow so much i just had to share. he has turf wars with black mask, he sells 'scarecrow drugs' to teenagers, he plays the knife game with his victims, he collects old horror movie posters, he calls bruce 'little orphan boy', and i am obsessed. these versions of riddler and two-face are also great, their interactions (riddler with miss tuesday and two-face with pretty much everyone but mostly themselves) are hilarious and angsty and i love them sm.

Hob has ADHD and songs play in his head 24/7. Dream likes tuning in because it calms him down and makes him feel happy and grounded, having that small connection with Hob as he rebuilds The Dreaming and goes about Endless business.

(I'm headcanoning earworms as a weird type of daydream and very much within the scope of Dream's power.)

This could go in different directions.

Angst (with a Happy Ending): Hob and Death talk during That Time in the comics that I don't wanna talk about ever. Death tells Hob how Morpheus!Dream liked listening to the songs in Hob's head.

(In this AU), Morpheus!Dream chose to go to the Sunless Lands instead of retiring as a human. Hob tells Death that he's ready to accept her gift now, and if she could please guide him to wherever Morpheus!Dream is in her realm, because even in the afterlife, he wants to be with him. The Other Side by Ruelle is the last song that plays in Hob's head as he takes Death's hand, and the first song that Morpheus!Dream hears when they reunite.

Spicy: Because Hob has no control over what songs are being played, he doesn't even notice that lately, most of the songs (on repeat) are spicy. But it's not like it's a problem (for him), since earworms are mostly background noise to him by now.

However! Dream suffers because of the songs' suggestive lyrics. Is Hob trying to tell him something? Does he want to call Dream 'daddy' but is too shy to tell him face-to-face? Does he want to have a WAP in the Dreaming? Hob keeps thinking about this spicy instrumental music. Does he want Dream to make sweet, sweet love to him while it plays in the background?

Dream eventually snaps, because of course he does, and we all know what happens next. 😏

Crack: The chorus of The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?) by Ylvis is stuck in Hob's head for 10 days straight, and Dream is near tears because, "No, Hob, foxes do not say those things."

Fluff: Dream getting to listen to all the 20th and 21st century music he missed while he was imprisoned. Hob knows a lot of songs and has a really good memory for them.

Sometimes, when Hob gets frustrated because he doesn't remember how a certain tavern song from the 1500s starts, Dream reminds him. Sometimes, Dream even sings it for him. Hob is very heart eyes about it, no matter Dream's level of skill in singing. (It can either be very good since he's the Lord of Dreams, or very bad for the same reason he has a weird-ass laugh.)

Sometimes, Hob takes Dream's hand and they dance to the music currently on repeat in his head, especially if it's something slow and sweet. They dance whenever the mood strikes, wherever they currently are. At home, in the Inn, among the pigeons in the nearby park, and of course, in the Dreaming.
