With Storm Ali making its way across the Northern parts of the UK & Ireland, we bring you our own Storm Ali for the next instalment of the #MeetTheHunters. Name: Liaqat Ali Position: Played Hooker, but trying to play in the backs now, hopefully at number 12. When did you join #TeamHunter? Been part of the Hunters from the start. I was at the first ever training session November 2016 What was your first training session with The Hunters like? Really enjoyed the first training session as most of us were all new to rugby and it was great learning how to play together and develop as a player. And what made you come back? Enjoyed the banter and was keen to play a new sport. What is your favourite memory so far of being a Hunter? The first ever game against Castleford RUFC was a great memory, it was the first time we ever played a match and was great to be part of that moment. Why do you think there is a need for Inclusive rugby? I’m not sure there is a need for inclusive rugby, but I suppose it helps people new to the game come and enjoy the sport. Hopefully we can progress to play in a local league in the near future. Finally, to anyone reading this who is thinking of joining with experience or no experience playing rugby, but who haven’t yet decided to #showusyourtackle, what would you say to them? In less than 2 years we’ve had so many new players that have joined, they probably had the same reservations, but if you ask any of them they will tell you it was a great decision. From hard work to being a part of a team, rugby teaches people a whole range of disciplines that will help them throughout their lives. When we speak to men about joining the club, we get the same questions/objections every time, from saying "I have never played before" to "I'm too skinny, unfit, fat, old etc, to play rugby". #TeamHunter at its heart, welcomes anyone to come along and play rugby. We exist because our premise is we are an inclusive club. That means that anyone is welcome and along with our brother clubs across the globe who are part of the IGR International Gay Rugby, we provide safe spaces for people to come down and pick up a rugby ball. Over the next few days, we will bring you reasons why Inclusive Rugby is important, not only to Rugby and LGBTQI communities, but also what it means to every individual player and what you could be benefitting from by experiencing the #SpiritofRugby. Our third instalment of #MeetTheHunters serves as a goodbye and good luck as one of us departs today to spend a year travelling the world. He has been a brilliant member of the team both on and off the pitch putting his heart and soul into everything and even taking part in our first "Drag Race". It is with tears that we say "goodbye for now" to him... However, once a Hunter, always a Hunter. Name: Kieron Robinson Position (rugby): Flanker then Centre. When did you join #TeamHunter? April 2017 Did you have any experience playing rugby before? And what attracted you to rugby? None at all... I always miraculously “missed” PE at school as I felt so uncomfortable. I joined to improve my fitness, to do more cardio but mainly because everyone else laughed and said I couldn’t do it as I was “too gay to play”. What was your first training session with The Hunters like? I was so nervous and hungover from a Friday night out, I thought I was dying. However, I threw myself in, realised I could actually catch a ball and the exercise swiftly washed the hangover away! What have you enjoyed the most about being a Hunter and what is your favourite memory? It’s cheesy but picking one memory is too difficult! I love the feeling of achievement after each match and then having the opportunity to socialise with amazing people from the @igrclubhouse community across the UK. What did being part of the Hunters mean to you? It gave me a community I could be part of in Leeds and new friends who have been there for me for anything and everything. Being a Hunter really changed my experience in Leeds and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Finally, to anyone reading this who is thinking of joining with experience or no experience playing rugby, but who haven’t yet decided to #showusyourtackle, what would you say to them? You don’t have to be the biggest, the strongest or the fastest... Believe in yourself and give it a try.
