Week 8 Post

Answering: What outlets do Western men have within Western culture for intimacy/love/romance/sexuality free from the misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and impossible constraints of masculinity?

As of now, I feel as though there is not an outlet that meets every single one of those requirements as of now. In fact, in recent years, I feel perhaps that depictions of masculinity have gotten worse. Perhaps even affirming traditional gender roles more than before with the new consciousness of "woke" in the States specifically. In fact, the President (he who must not be named) is literally a creep. How could this not keep these traditional roles going, and even make them worse?

As opposed to the East, there seems to be a lot more stigma about men (at least from what I have observed), perhaps reflective of cultural differences or how people hold themselves in different places, but I think America specifically has these a lot of spoken and unspoken guidelines about what is a man and what isn't. I feel also that the belittling of men that don't fit into these binaries furthers the lack of an outlet for men.

I think this is what makes finding media tailored to a man that is positive in some way so difficult. Even in shows that have depictions of positive masculinity, or men comfortable in their masculinity (someone that comes to mind is Steve from Stranger Things), there will always be something that comes back to bite it in the butt, whether that is homophobia, transphobia, etc.

Like we talked about in class, the things that are tailored to men are violent, vulgar, usually sexual in nature, or all three. Porn targeted at men, which is marketed as an outlet for their desire, need, etc, is usually over exaggerated (it is a known fact that porn will use fake semen to give men "bigger loads", women in it are usually making fake noises, the plot has no substance), sometimes delve into really concerning fantasies like rape or incest, or belittle women in some way.

So, without one of the phobias or belittlement of some type of person, things do not really get targeted at men because its not masculine or powerful enough.

And this is really harmful! Not only to men, but to women, too! Because of the things these types of media promote and enable, (even outside of porn, James Bond, Indiana Jones, Sixteen Candles, Revenge of the Nerds, etc all show terrible depictions of sexual assault, weak women, what have you) everyone is hurt in the process.

To my point earlier, I really think things are getting worse. When thinking of groups like incels, the proud boys, and fans of Andrew Tate, I feel as though the outlets that could of been are further pushed to the side and even dismissed because of the idea of "the perfect man" being even more inflated as time goes on.

Even when thinking about people like incels, because of these patriarchal norms that have come to be, they feel inadequate and unworthy of sex, blaming women in the process (even though it is the patriarchy's fault!). Again, everyone is hurt.

So, the answer the question in a shorter way: there is not a thing that exists that is a fully healthy outlet for men in the West.

AHHHHH well that is kind of a hard question to answer.

I’ll say my honest truth that I feel like I haven’t connected with TTPD as much as the other albums!!!

But if I had to choose I really liked The prophecy and Cassandra. Other notable mentions are definitely I hate it here and so long London (which im actually writing abt for a school assighment 🙂‍↕️)

Although IMO, the anthology tracks > the album tracks 🙈
