Speaking of the thrift store, I also found these velvet slippers recently, and I wasn't even looking at the footwear. Someone had left them on the shelf with the baskets & wooden home decor things, and they were sparkly and a pretty colour and fit me perfectly.
They're in almost new condition. It looks like they've been worn exactly once, and I think it's because the toe of the left insole had come un-glued and was all wrinkled up, but I stuck a butter knife up there and spread some Shoe Goo under it and fixed it in about a minute.
I was surprised to learn they're made and sold as women's shoes, because they look very much like men's slippers to me, but I guess my idea of normal men's fashion is rather skewed. This specific pair is men's slippers now, at least, since I bought it and will wear them as house slippers!

First Ikat weaving! It's kasuri.
I don't have a photo of the whole thing ironed sorry lol, I hemmed them and turned them into square cloths. I measured and dyed thread so it would make a pattern when I wove it. The dyeing took so long but undoing all the knots I made dyeing it took the same amount of time it took to weave it I'm p sure. My prof lent me Japanese Ikat Weaving by Jun and Noriko Tomita and it was super helpful. I loved looking at pictures of vintage and modern kasuri they were so beautiful.

Attire of a Jewish Bukharan woman. Uzbekistan, late 19th-early 20th century.
Coat-dress (kalatchak or munisak): ikat-dyed silk, printed cotton. Underdress: silk.
The coat's ikat-dyed fabric and traditional cut accentuating the hips are typical features of the clothing worn by the women of the Jewish Bukharan community. Such a garment was a mandatory item in a bride's dowry, and would later be used to cover the woman at her funeral.

hi birb! what kind of casual clothes do you think senku, taiju and yuzu would wear in the modern world? like say to a birthday party, im making a meme but didnt wanna just put them in their school uniforms as usual
Hmm...
In their childhood flashback, Taiju was shown with pretty worn out shoes, so I feel like his guardians probably don't have much money. In that case his casual clothes would probably pretty simple, secondhand t-shirts and pants and the like. For practicality I can see him having like, one or two outerwear pieces that are comfortable for him, like a simple hooded jacket in warm-neutral tones like brown and forest green.
Senku as a little kid is very preppy, he seems to like button ups and he even has an adorable little bow tie in one shot. As an older teen/adult in the story proper, Boichi often draws him in nice suits, but for a more informal party I think he'd go for a button up and maybe a tie. I've made jokes about Senku owning science-themed graphic t-shirts, but honestly those are probably mainly Byakuya's thing and Senku might have like ten of the same button up so he doesn't have to think too hard in the mornings.
Yuzuriha, now that's quite the challenge. She's a fashionista, of course, but we mainly see her designing clothes for other people, not for herself. That said, she does wear a few outfits besides her leather dress, and observing her line of "Haute Couture Yuzuriha" seems to give the indication that Yuzuriha really likes the look of elegant designer fashion that's not too complicated. I doubt that she's of a significantly wealthier background than Senku, so maybe she'd make copies of designer clothes for herself while adding her own flair. For an actual outfit idea, maybe a midi skirt with a button up blouse and a statement scarf.
I was about to say it doesn't seem like she's big on patterns but then I remembered that they didn't get around to reinventing fabric printing in the new stone age XD. To be honest, I think Yuzuriha could totally pull off ikat weaving in the stone world (that's where patterns are woven into the fabric itself with pre-dyed bundles of thread) but it's very time consuming.
These are all pretty random thoughts la;kdjfksjfldsfkjl feel free to chat with me more about character outfits though! It kind of surprises me how much I like thinking about fashion and characterization.

I simply don't think most Eutermesans wear much clothing most of the time. I just don't. Fabric is very labour-intensive to produce and if you're a reasonably thick skinned species you don't need the protection from the elements so much. Plus they change their skin colour for camouflage so covering their skin would be a disadvantage.
However. I do think they wear clothing as a status symbol or for special occasions because it shows that, not only do you have the spare time and resources to make cloth, you're secure enough that you don't have to prioritize survival over everything else. In those circumstances techniques like ikat dyeing or weaving different coloured threads in the warp and weft like in shot silk could be used to create iridescent fabrics. This kind of cloth or clothing might be given as part of a dowry or bride price, or make up part of the grave goods of a particularly high ranking individual.

Deceptively simple or fantastically intricate, ikat technique has been used for many centuries to create extravagant costumes and cloths of deep cultural meaning. The distinctively blurred, feathered or jagged patterns of ikat-dyed textiles are found across much of the world - from Japan in the east to Central and South America in the west, with vast areas of South-east Asia, India, Central Asia and the Middle East in between. The traditional patterns still hold cultural relevance today in significant parts of the long-established ikat-weaving areas. Textile artists and fashion designers in many and varied countries have taken ikat in new directions, respecting traditional forms and palettes while creatively diverging from them.
This is the first time all the different iterations of this textile have been comprehensively brought together in one volume, drawing from the wide-ranging collection of David Paly. It is a journey across the world through the lens of ikat.

pls tell me all about shahnozas clothing design I am so interested it looks so cool
HEHEHEHE, I’m so glad you asked.
Her color palette is red and derived from the palette of the Tajikistan flag. Red represents as unity.
Her clothing utilizes Persian, Tajik, and Pamir elements due to the ethnic group she’s supposed to represent, her being Pamir-Tajik.
Persia is included because all of Central Asia, used to be a part of the Persian Empire. And a lot of the elements from Iran, were brought to us. I’m mentioning this because there is a bit of an overlap, culturally, where you can find similar characteristics between the two countries. But, they’re still very different locations (different dialects in the language, customs, traditions, etc).
Also, Tajiks originally migrated from Iran before settling into Central Asia; however that of course, predates way before the Persian Empire (it was a very long time ago too, LOLLL).
Her field outfit takes inspiration from Persian Immortal soldiers from the Achaemenid Dynasty. She wears a war mask as well. Typically, they have moustaches, which symbolizes pride/courage, and is for intimidation. I think they’re more cute than scary. :3 Her spike plate is impractical, and is just for the appeal in her silhouette LMAOOO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Winter Palace outfit mainly takes inspiration from Tashkurgan Pamirs. They follow the same rules with Tajik-style clothing with the chakan (robe/dress) and jizor (alternate names might be sirowal) pants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her base game outfit uses traditional Tajik clothing, with a kurta (except she has it sleeveless). The design uses the ikat-style of dyeing the fabric, which is also found in many cultures, so it doesn’t only pertain to Central Asia.

Thank you so much for asking 😭🫶🏼 I love representing things from Central Asia, and the diversity each country has with their clothing and history.

for the fall emoji asks - 🔮 ☕ & 🍎 <3
Sorry for how late this is!
🔮 Crystal Ball: How far into the future of your story can you see? Do you plan everything in advance or take things step by step?
I can see moderately far? I have events I want to happen, and events that must happen, but a lot is…up in the air. And sometimes characters and their plots change before I know what to do with them…Kolfinna’s foster mother, for example, insisted on a complete rewrite while I was on the bus yesterday morning.
Which means that Kolfinna’s introduction has to be adjusted! But that's the fun of writing, right?
☕ Coffee or Tea: How often do you feel like you need to take breaks or unwind from working on your story?
I often take breaks…perhaps too often…because I get frustrated with my inability to finish the project, or with my need to make everything picture-perfect/worrying everyone will point and laugh if my stories have occasional historical bloopers, or sometimes I run into personal problems and need to take a break.
Or as with Alasdair's current story, I needed to take a break from Vikings until I had my research paper submitted and finished. Once I went to my event, I was able to see a lot more options for clothing–ikat-print pants, for example–and I’m a little more refreshed.
I think I need to be more disciplined, to be honest.
🍎 Apple: Do you have a favorite friend/platonic dynamic? Any friendships gone sour?
Oh, jeez. Alasdair doesn't have any friends in this timeline! (Yet.) So this is a hard question.
I think that he and Caedmon will be friends eventually, though Caedmon will have to work hard. Alasdair’s a bit shell-shocked and will need to get to grips with things before he can make friends. But some events may arise that force them to work together and be a team!
(And Caedmon isn’t supposed to be Chatty Cathy and inviting people into his isolation, but he’s really a sweetheart and couldn’t just leave Alasdair there in the springs. He’s the ninth-century equivalent of the ‘Mom Friend.’)
