irreplaceable pt. 2 — park sunghoon

It had been a little over a month since you had broken up with Sunghoon when he received news of you being in a dating scandal with one of your seniors. If he were honest, he’d say he hadn’t ever expected you to move on from him that quickly, but maybe it had just been him overestimating how much he mattered to you - instead, he sent you a congratulations message that you never even opened.

Sunghoon, of course, had immediately started talking to his crush as soon as you’d broken up with him, trying to distract from the strange string of emotions you had stirred up within him that night. It was never more than a couple of dates before he lost interest in her.

Sooner or later, Sunghoon deleted your number from his phone, seeing how you had been caught with your presumed boyfriend more than once. It had been a mystery as to who you were dating as celebrity media outlets had only released your name, but Sunghoon felt bothered by it nonetheless.

Months passed with no news about you, which led him to quietly pass the time without thinking about you until end-of-the-year practices started ramping up for the entire industry. Suddenly, Jay would arrive at practices with a warm meal in hand, much too familiar with the way you once did for him. 

He tried to push away the many thoughts of one of his members and best friends dating his ex-girlfriend until he noticed a notification with your name on his lock screen. 

Sunghoon swore he died a little inside. How could his friend do this to him? To not even speak to him before trying to pursue you. Sunghoon was heartbroken for more than one reason that day. 

It took everything in him not to drag Jay out into the middle of the room and confront him for what he was doing behind his back. Instead, he went home without a glance back at the room filled with people. Sunghoon calmed himself down after an hour of pacing back and forth throughout his dorm room. He hadn’t been rationally thinking. 

Would Jay really do this to him?

The breakup had taken a toll on you. You hadn’t been able to eat or sleep well, which led to a lack of energy when you had practices that resulted in poor performance on music shows. You were more than aware of how dramatically you were reacting to this ordeal given that Sunghoon hadn’t even liked you, but that didn’t stop your heart from breaking every time a random memory of him doing something nice for you popped up in your head.

You tried to convince yourself that you hadn’t ever felt anything for Sunghoon yourself - that your infatuation had come from how handsome he was and you would get over this little slump in no time. 

You flopped around in bed, leaning over to look at your member’s alarm clock. 4:00 AM shown in red letters blinked back at you, taunting you with its horrendously bright lights.

This had been the third night in a row that you had been unable to sleep.

You felt your phone vibrate from under your pillow, alerting you of a text message. It took you a second to completely register who had sent you a message before you replied. Jay had asked if you were awake, wondering if you wanted to meet by a local convenience store. It only took you 10 minutes before you snuck out of your dorm, and were on your way to meet up with him.

You had never expected the level of true amity that would bloom between the both of you, but you were grateful to have had Jay there for you through one of the worst times in your life yet.

Neither you nor Jay was aware of the stirrup it would cause the next day when it had leaked that the two of you had met up late at night and after a stern interrogation from both of your managers, the situation had been cleared up without a problem.

The nightly outings with Jay continued whenever you couldn’t catch a full night’s rest, too preoccupied with your thoughts to give out. More and more of your fans had begun to speculate online, but your shared company never commented.

You had only recently started making Jay meals and dropping them off once you had started feeling better to repay him for all the money he had spent on your ice cream. Little thank-you notes littered the tops of the lids, cheering him on as you were both about to get very busy. 

It wasn’t until Jay asked you to stop that you realized there was a problem with what you had been doing. Of course, Jay had kept the reason for his hesitation to himself but it didn’t take a genius to understand what was going on.

In a fit of anger, you messaged Sunghoon’s number, still having his contact saved in your phone. It was a wordy message, filled with obscenities you wouldn’t have ever repeated to his face, but you were rightly upset that Sunghoon had the gall to be angry at his friend for comforting you as any normal person would have.

Who did he think he was to dictate his friend's actions?

If Sunghoon were honest with himself, he’d admit that he knew Jay dating you shouldn’t have bothered him as much as it did. He hadn’t even actually dated you - his friend was more than validated in his right to pursue you. 

He didn’t completely understand what bothered him more, the fact that it was Jay who was dating you or that you had moved on. He knew he should be happy for you, especially since he knew how hurt you had been when you broke up, but he couldn’t find it in himself.

He often caught himself daydreaming now, imagining how it must be for you and Jay on your dates. The glimmer in your eyes that had once been only for him to see was now shining for someone else. There was a sickly feeling in Sunghoon’s stomach, one he knew he shouldn’t be feeling.

After a while, he started avoiding Jay as much as he could. Sunghoon hadn’t expected the misery that would accompany him after your breakup. There had been an intense guilt that had started eating Sunghoon from the inside out. Couldn’t he just be happy for his friend?

Awards shows came quicker than he would have wanted. Sunghoon had managed to suppress his feelings long enough to get through practices, but he had no idea how well he’d hold up if he came across you with Jay. On top of that, you were upset with him over his reaction to your relationship.

It was only the beginning of award season, but Sunghoon had already seen too much. The smiles shared between you and Jay did not go unnoticed, and he hated it.

He hated just how much he wished your smiles were directed at him.

Sunghoon’s intense stares didn’t go unnoticed by you either. They were difficult to miss when you could feel his eyes burning into you whenever you stood to applaud his group. It was an intense feeling to know that you were being watched with such disdain, but there wasn’t much you could do. Jay tried to comfort you as much as he could through text messages whenever he was in his green room. 

After one particular performance by your group, you ran into Jay and his members, excitedly congratulating them all with hugs as Sunghoon distanced himself as much as he could. Again, you felt his stern stare, hesitantly turning to him you gave him a thumbs up and a smile.

You figured keeping things civil wouldn’t hurt, despite being annoyed with how he was acting lately. Unsurprisingly, Sunghoon didn’t return the small gesture instead he looked away from you almost entirely.

Yes, you hadn’t expected much from him but it still hurt. You didn’t understand where this hostility came from. The last time you had physically seen Sunghoon he looked like he was on the verge of tears, yet now he stood looking miserable at the thought of your presence. 

The thought hadn’t even been processed in your mind before you were walking toward him, escaping your member's hold on your hand. 

“Sunghoon, can I speak with you?”

When I picture you and jennie together, I keep seeing scenarios happening at night or in the late evening. More than a full-on friendship, I see you two getting along in a workplace context or at events. You’d be each other’s reason for not fully dreading being invited at certain events. I see you two gossiping together, eating at fancy restaurants, and even shopping in expensive stores every now and then! I keep seeing models and modeling “environments” so maybe that’s the reason you would/could meet. You might meet at a shooting, at a fashion show, at a launching event of some sort, or at someplace where networking will be the, or one of the, main topics. You would have fun talking and partying together (if that’s your thing. But like I said, it may even just be the kind of environment you’ll be almost “forced” to be in, because of your line of work), so it will help you enjoy your time more by having Jennie by your side, and viceversa. I keep feeling Choi Sora vibes. If you don’t know her, she’s a famous model. I really don’t know why she keeps popping into my mind, but you could either reach a similar status as her, or she could simply be part of your friends group, along with Jennie. IT girls (or boys/people) vibes!! I get such a cool energy from you two!

For the groups I’d see you in…I’m getting Twice, Ateez, XG, (G)I-dle, Enhypen (not a lot for the group in itself, but some of their songs would be very fitting for the kind of group I would see you being a part of), Seventeen, IKON, BigBang, Exo. An introduction to DeVita

Do you want to learn all about the AOMG artist DeVita? This article will cover everything you need to know about the third female member to join the labels roster.

The content of this article is also available in video format, embedded at the bottom of this article.

Prelude

In early April of 2020, the Korean hip-hop label AOMG ambiguously announced that a new artist was signing onto the label. This label was grounded by the Korean-American triple-threat; Jay Park, who’s also one of its executives. This is a label with a very organic feel and artist-oriented nature, which stands out compared to many other music labels.

On April 3rd, the label’s official Instagram account posted a video. It was titled, “Who’s The Next AOMG?” where fellow AOMG members talked about this upcoming recruit. They sprinkled small hints and details by sharing their thoughts on the artist without mentioning who.

Around the world, fans immediately began speculating on who this could be. The major consensus was that it had to be the solo artist Lee Hi, due to reporting like this: “AOMG responds ‘nothing is confirmed’ to reports of Lee Hi signing on with the label”

A few other names got thrown in fan speculations like Hanbin (B.I), previous member of IKON, Jvcki Wai, and MOON (문) aka Moon Sujin. This despite a few of these already being signed to other labels.

On April 6th, three days later, the account was updated with a part two. This time dropping more hints, which would exclude many names from fan speculations.

On the 7th of April, the label’s official Instagram account posted a short teaser. The video sported an 80’s retrofuturistic setting, with a woman turned from the camera, dressed in all black, rocking braids, and some glistening high-heels. As it seemed to be a female, some were now certain that it had to be Lee Hi. A small few actually guessed correctly that the one who would be joining AOMG would be Ms DeVita.

Finally on April 9th, it was official! She debuted with the music video, from which the teaser clips was taken from, EVITA!, which accompanied the release of her EP, CRÈME.

What does the name DeVita mean?

The name DeVita, draws inspiration and meaning from two things. Firstly, Eva Perón – also known as Evita – who was Argentina’s former First Lady. When Chloe was learning about Eva’s life, it inspired her to combine “Devil” and “Evita”, thus creating “DeVita”. The name signifies the duality of how both Eva Perón and DeVita could be perceived. Either being a devil, or an angel depending on the eye of the beholder. Secondly, Salvatore Di Vita, a character from Cinema Paradiso, was also a source of inspiration.

An introduction to DeVita

Chloe Cho – now known under the artist name DeVita – was born and raised in South Korea, until the age of eleven. In 2009, she moved to Chicago, where she would learn English.

In 2013, she went back to Korea and participated in the third season of the show; K-pop Star. A talent show, where the “big three” (the three largest music labels in Korea) hosts auditions to find the next big k-pop star. However she didn’t win, therefore neither got signed.

Later on, she returned to Chicago and graduated high school. After reflecting on what she wanted to do next, she decided to make music. In 2014, her pursuit to become an artist brought her to the talent show Kollaboration. On this show, she performed covers and actually ended up being a finalist. Despite her talents, she did not triumph as the winner of the show.

Not letting these losses stop her, she started releasing music on Soundcloud. The earliest release I could find, Halfway Love (Ruff), was from 2016. Her catalogue consisted of both covers and original music.

One day, Kirin, an artist and CEO of the music label 8balltown Records, was introduced to DeVita’s music. He liked what he heard and the two linked up. In May of 2018, WEKEYZ, one of 8balltown’s producer duos released a track titled Sugar. This track featured both DeVita, and the AOMG rapper Ugly Duck. This was the beginning of many collaborations to come.

On August 28th of 2018, just a few months later, AOMG released Sugar (Puff Daehee Mix).

This was a remix done by Puff Daehee, the alter ego of Kirin. Along with this track, it was accompanied by a music video starring Kirin, DeVita, and Ugly Duck. For most people, this was their first time seeing DeVita.

DeVita continued doing features on many songs by Korean artists while creating a little buzz for herself. There’s one notable feature, which could be seen as an important milestone in her career. That is her feature on the track Noise, from AOMG artist Woo Won Jae’s project, titled af.

In a tweet a few days after the release of CRÈME, she shared the significance of this moment.

“I was still making minimum wage working at a restaurant back when Noise dropped- I wrote my part during my shift on the back of this receipt paper. This was about a year and a half ago. A little bit after that I got a call from Pumpkin at 3am Chicago time. He said Jay wanted to meet in Philly in 4 hours. They put me on a plane and the rest is history.”

The phone call she mentioned in her tweet, about Jay wanting to meet, must have been made around September 2018. Jay was performing in Philadelphia at the time. The moment they met in Philadelphia was actually captured through a photo of the two. However, this picture ended up getting removed later on.

Fast forward a few months and Jay had just released his Ask About Me EP. The project focused on a western audience, so he went to the States on a promo run. During his visit, he also met up with DeVita once again, as can be seen here.

Finally, on April 9th, her being signed to AOMG was officially announced and she debuted with her EP titled CRÈME. Her joining AOMG, looked like something that happened pretty naturally. The vast majority of artists she had collaborated on tracks with happened to be AOMG members. Getting comfortable with the AOMG family, likely made the decision to join crystal clear.

Artistically

Just a quick look at her body of work thus far, a majority of it is in English. However, she has no issues singing in Korean, as proven by her feature on Code Kunst’s; Let u in. The tone in her voice has this sort of mixture of many singers, a melting pot of sorts. It reminds me of Audrey Nuna, SAAY, H.E.R, some vocal riffs from Dinah Jane, and at times, just a tiny bit of Ariana Grande.

As an artist, she’s still in the early stages of carving out her own unique sound and style. There’s incredible potential here, but her distinct identity is not completely there yet. I see before me a caterpillar that within a couple years, will transform into a butterfly, with its own identifiable pattern to spread its wings out on.

From what she’s shown so far, I would say she seems most comfortable doing R&B and soul music. However, beyond a quick description I prefer to refrain from categorizing her. Mostly because artists generally feel limited when categorized. More importantly, because we have no idea what she has in store for the future.

Debut EP: CRÈME

CRÈME is DeVita’s “crème de la crème”. She constantly modified the tracklist to present her debut project in a way that held her personal standard; essentially presenting us her best tracks. The result is CRÈME, which consists of five tracks, with a runtime of fourteen minutes altogether.

This EP showcases the fact that she is a competent songwriter, able to write some soulful, emotional ballads. It is completely in English and all the tracks are written by her, telling both life stories of her own and that of others. A majority of the production was handled by her “musical soulmate”; TE RIM, but other notable names, like Code Kunst show up as well.

Tracks:

Movies, introduces the project in a very gentle manner. In the track, DeVita paints a picture of a criminal couple, getting a rush, by committing crimes together. The lyrics feel inspired by movies like Bonnie and Clyde. My initial thoughts were that, for some ears, it could possibly be “too” calm as an opener. It doesn’t demand attention the way EVITA! does. Simply put, it’s not a bad track. I would just have put this track later on in the EP.

EVITA!, is something different compared to what I hear from others in the K-R&B lane. I love the 80’s aesthetic in both the track and music video. Sonically, the nostalgic saxophone riffs, warm lush synth pads, thumping bass line, results in a trip back to the 80s. With this recipe, topped with DeVita’s “current” contemporary soul and R&B voice makes for an interesting combination. The music video had that futuristic 80’s look with the neon colors, and I loved how the guns she played around with looked a lot like the “Needlers” from the Halo franchise.  The title is once again just like DeVita’s name, an ode to the controversial Eva Perón. The instrumental was originally used by TE RIM, the producer of the track in 2017. His version has the same title as DeVita’s version and I recommend giving that one a listen as well, as it has a different feel to it. This track was definitely one of the highlights of the EP.

All About You, is a simple yet beautiful piano love ballad. Originating from her own tales of love, her vocals effortlessly capture what she felt during these moments.

1974 Live, is yet another ballad, but this time, with a calm guitar backing, playing a poppier R&B chord progression. DeVita’s voice is given a lot of space to be in the center of the track. As soon as I heard this track I became curious. What was the significance of this year, which would have her title the track as such? My questions were left unanswered… until the EP had marinated a while, when she tweeted: “1974 Live is about Christine Chubbuck”. In case you’re unfamiliar, Christine Chubbuck was a television news reporter, who made history in 1974. She was the first person to commit suicide live on air. According to her mother Christine’s suicide would on paper be due to an unfullfilling personal life. All throughout her life, she had experienced unreciprocated love. With this information tying back to the track, it becomes a lot less ambiguous and reveals a more cohesive narrative.

Show Me, is the final track of the EP, featuring immaculate production from the talented CODE KUNST. The sound is very moody, which fits her voice like a glove. This is my favorite performance on the entire EP, both lyrically and vocally. The lyrics present someone who’s fed up dealing with men, who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. Now she’s looking for love with someone who’s honest and “real”.

With the project being a year old now, it has already gotten her nominated for both Rookie of the Year along with EVITA being nominated for Best R&B & Soul Track in the 18th iteration of the Korean Music Awards.

A majority of listeners seemed to enjoy the project. Many seem to be in love with her voice judging by the endless amounts of praise she has received, often described as painfully addicting, soothing, smooth, and so on.

I also asked a friend who’s a huge fan of Korean music, especially the hiphop and r&b scene to share her thoughts on the project. Here’s what she said:

"This whole project is empowering, in particular the tracks Show Me and EVITA! DeVita being a new artist, managed to impress me and many more listeners through this EP. As mentioned earlier, empowering lyrics with unique melodies and beats. Especially with the track EVITA! The fact that 1974 Live and EVITA! was referring to, two historically important women, is something that I love. This is one of my favorite EP:s of 2020 and DeVita is now included in my list of favorite artists." @Haonsmom

From what I’ve seen, only a few have been vocal about not really being too fond of the project. Some were left a bit disappointed, as they were expecting more hip-hop and R&B from an AOMG artist. The lack of “danceable” tracks was also a concern to some. Despite these criticisms, one thing was always mentioned; the girl has a beautiful voice and is obviously talented.

After listening to this EP, I hear a lot of potential. Being an EP with just five tracks, it definitely avoids overstaying its welcome. It’s brief enough to allow a listen through the entire project, no matter what you’re doing. My favorite tracks would have to be Show Me and EVITA!, but I found the whole project to be enjoyable. This EP is sprinkled with lovely vocal performances and simple but captivating production. I do still stand by my opinion that Movies would have fit better later in the tracklist if you’re chasing that mainstream ear.

I think the way EVITA! kicks you in the face, demanding attention, would’ve been a better fit as the opening track. In contrast to the other tracks, the energy level is unique, making the placement feel odd as the rest of the tracks have a chill vibe. All in all, this project gave me a taste of the “crème” but left me with a curious yearning for what this chef will whip up for dessert.

Bright future ahead

The addition of more female artists to the AOMG roster was much needed. Hoody was the first and only female member for about four years. This was the case up until late 2019, where she was then joined by sogumm, who had just won AOMG’s audition program called SignHere. Now funnily enough after DeVita, Lee Hi actually did end up officially signing with AOMG on July 22, last year.

Based on what I’ve heard during Devita’s Kollaboration days, she has improved immensely. This topped with her leaving the impression of someone passionate about their craft, bodes well for what's to come. She seems to be someone who'll constantly evolve.

Following an artist, at the early stages of their career, is something that I always find exciting. With such a lovely debut, I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for DeVita.

It was hot. So fucking hot.

Bao grumbled as she exited her shared room with Bobby and Hanbin. She had the dorm to herself today as the boys decided to do a guys’ day. Originally, it was an iKON day–meaning all members– but Bao was too tired and hot to do anything outside. The dorm had AC. Or at least it did.

Yunhyeong had turned the AC off earlier, something about saving money, and now Bao stood in front of the control panel, growling.

“How the fuck do you do this again?” she hissed to the empty room. It had only been a little over half a year since their debut and living in their new dorm, and Bao never had to mess with the thermostat, so she had no clue what to do.

“Shouldn’t be too hard,” she mumbled, chewing on her thumb nail. She reached over to press a button that looked like an ‘on’ button. (Nothing was labeled.) Apparently, AC panels were universal in Korea. Japan had them too, but in her grandparents' small home, they had one unit in the living room that her grandpa controlled. The rest of the house had fans.

Bao pressed the button, then hunched her shoulders as a beeping sound came from the panel. The screen blinked a few times then shut off.

“Shit,” she breathed out, banging her head against the wall.

She could call one of the boys. Bao knew that they’d easily tell how to do it, but they only just accepted her a month or two ago. It didn’t matter how much time and effort the boys put into making Bao feel welcomed, she still felt slightly ostracized. (Though what else was new?)

“Fuck it!” Bao exclaimed, storming off to the kitchen. If she couldn’t get the AC going, then she’d move onto the next best thing. A smile grew on her lips as memories of her as a scrawny child, sneaking into the kitchen to cool off, surfaced.

Bao reached her destination, then flung the door to the freezer open, popping her head in. She hummed in content as the cold hit her face, reaching to her shoulders and down her back.

“The little things,” she mumbled, a satisfied smile resting on her lips, eyes closed.

After a few more minutes of doing that, Bao groaned as her back began to protest at the position. She opened her eyes. (If it’s not one thing, it’s another.)

Bao gave a closed smile, huffing a laugh through her nose as her eyes landed on the box of cherry popsicles. She stuck her hand inside the box and pulled one out. Stepping back, Bao closed the freezer, unwrapped the popsicle, then popped it in her mouth. (This would do for now.)

She made her way to the too small living room and plopped herself on the ground right in front of the fan. Bao sat criss-crossed, leaning a hand back, using the other to continue eating. She hummed to one of Big Bang’s songs. (Blue had been stuck in her head lately.)

The clock on the wall read 5:30 pm, meaning the boys would be here soon. Bao held the popsicle in between her lips as she pulled her phone out to see if any of the guys had texted her, but before she could check, she gasped.

The heat had melted the popsicle, breaking it in half. The top half remained in her mouth, the bottom, landing on her white t-shirt.

“Fucking hell,” she hissed through the melting treat in her mouth. Tossing her phone to the side, she grabbed her shirt, pulling it forward. There was a huge red stain now, right in the center. Bao groaned, picking up the discarded popsicle and getting up. She threw it out then turned back to the living room.

One of Bobby’s oversized basketball jerseys sat on the armrest of the couch along with other folded shirts. (Bobby sucked at putting his laundry away.) Bao walked over to the pile and grabbed the black jersey. Pulling her current shirt up and over her head, she heard the front door open.

“Holy shit!” Bao chuckled at Jinhwan’s flustered tone.

Bao, who had her shirt fully off by the time the boys had walked, turned to have her back face the boys. “My bad. I hadn’t known you guys were coming yet,” she said, nonchalantly as she picked up Bobby’s shirt and threw it on.

“What the hell, Bao?!” Hanbin exclaimed. Bao turned to face the boys to find them all looking at her in various states of horror, embarrassment, or in Junhoe’s case, amusement.

She raised a brow at him. “What’s so funny?” she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Nothing,” he chuckled, shaking his head. She squinted at him until he spoke again. “Just laughing at the fact that everyone here seems to be scarred after seeing you, but it's not like you even have anything,” the vocalist said, cackling.

Bao puckered her lips in approval. He had a point. Junhoe saw this and grinned, Bao grinning back.

“Are you kidding me? So what? We’re just gonna pretend like she didn’t just flash us?” Jinhwan sputtered. He, Hanbin, and Junhoe seemed to be the only vocal ones in this situation. The others were too busy looking away to chime in.

Bao chuckled. “Like Junhoe said, I’ve got nothing. So it’s not like I really flashed you,” she said, shrugging. A smirk appeared on her lips as he went to talk, but stopped himself, looking away.

“What were you even doing?” Hanbin asked, channeling his embarrassment into annoyance.

Bao shrugged again. “I dropped my popsicle on my shirt and it stained. I went to change it,” she simply answered, taking a seat back on the ground. Bao picked up her white shirt and held it up for them to see the red splotch.

“So you used my shirt?” Bobby asked, sounding amused, though his cheeks were still tinged red.

“It was nearby,” Bao answered, pointing to the rapper’s pile of clothes on the couch. He nodded in understanding.

“Where the hell is your bra? If you wore that, then this wouldn’t have been so weird,” Yunhyeong said, not making eye contact.

“Again, I don’t have much up here, so why wear some shit that’s just gonna make me hot? Oh, and I’m not sure, but I may have fucked up the AC,” Bao stated. She chuckled watching the second eldest’s eyes widened as he ran to check the panel.

“It really doesn’t bug you at all that this just happened?” the maknae asked, taking a seat in front of Bao and handing her a plastic bag with chips from the store.

She smiled at him. “Not really. Though I am pissed that I ruined my shirt,” Bao said in annoyance.

“Jesus, you’re something else,” Hanbin breathed out, head dropping back, as he messaged his neck.

“C-could you just be a bit more careful next time?” came Donghyuk’s shy request.

Bao turned to him, smiling. His face was still beet red. “I’ll try,” she chuckled, popping a chip in her mouth.

“Okay, so you did nothing wrong to the AC. It’s fine. I just started it back up,” Yunhyeong stated, walking over to her to sit down. The others joined him.

“This will definitely make for a good story,” Bobby stated, chuckling to himself.

“And who the hell would we tell this story to?” the oldest sassed, quirking a brow.

“This stays within these walls,” Hanbin ordered, looking at everyone. When his eyes landed on Bao, she smiled.

“Sir, yes, sir,” she said, giving him a wink. He rolled his eyes, grabbing her bag of chips and popping a few in his mouth.

Bobby/Kim Jiwon Scenario

Request: 16. Bobby please✨

Prompt: “You look like an idol.” “Who?” And then you mentioned the name of the guy who’s talking to you.

“Oh God, I’m so sorry!”

“It’s fine...” 

Saturday night, around 11PM to be precise. You sighed deeply as you looked down to what used to be coffee in your grasp, spilled as you got out the convenient store. Just your luck, a guy decided to go in, very quickly too, when you went out the door. You had not even sipped the coffee yet. Thankfully, it didn’t ruin your shoes but it was still an unfortunate event. 

“Why is this person not looking at me?”

Standing in front of you was a guy quite taller than you. His hair was messy, almost looked like he just got up from bed, with his baggy pants and sweaters, layered with another jacket. A dark grey face mask was covering his face. You could barely see his eyes with how messy his hair were, and also, the looking away thing. Him looking away seemed more of trying to hide his face, rather than an expression of embarrassment or shyness. 

“I’ll buy you a new one very quick—“ 

The guy quickly moved to ran back in the convenient store, it seemed like he was in such hurry and distressed, but you called him. “Wait,”

Silence. 

“You look like an idol.” You blurted without thinking. “But I couldn’t quite put my finger on who...”

“Who?!” The guy replied quickly. There was a hint of nervousness in the tone of his voice, but you couldn’t really tell why. 

“Uh, you know that guy from ikon? What was his name again...” You hummed. “B.I? No, the other one, Bobby... Yeah, Bobby!!!” You laughed at your own words. “Sorry, I’m a little random sometimes.”

“Uh...” The man awkwardly looked at you. “You still want the coffee? I mean, I don’t mind buying you two even.”

“Nah, it’s alright. I have plenty of that cheap-brand coffee at home anyway!” You laughed. 

“I insist.” 

You widened your eyes in amusement for a second. “Alright then, make it two, but the other one’s for you. How’s that sound?”

“Cool.” He shrugged and started walking back inside the store, with you following him from behind.

“So, what’s your name anyway?” You asked out of the blue when both of you reached the cashier. 

The guy looked back at you for a good second, almost like the question you asked was so unbelievable.

“What? Oh... you thought I was hitting on you, huh?” You rolled your eyes. 

“What?! No! I mean...” He shook his head, thanking the cashier after, as he grabbed the two cans of coffee. “Wanna sit down for a while? I mean, if you’re not in a hurry that is...”

“So, now YOU are hitting on me?” You folded your arms, grinning. 

He finally broke into a laugh. His eyes turned into crescents. “My name’s Jiwon.” He said as he handed you the coffee. 

You grabbed the can and told him your name. “I have a day off tomorrow anyway, so... yeah! I don’t mind sitting down for a while.” 

“Alright.” He said casually, but immediately stopped his tracks. “Wait, does my name not ring any bell to you?”

“What bell again?” You laughed while pushing the store door open for both of you. 

“Forget it.”

“You know what? I like your sense of humor, I think it kinda matches mine!” You laughed again as you sat down. “I like people with dry jokes!”

“Sure.” He laughed too and took the chair next to you. “What do you do anyway?”

“I’ve just graduated from university three months ago, but I decided to take some short course this summer before I jump into the work field.” You explained. “You?”

“I don’t really know if I should tell you what I do for a living...” He chuckled. 

You gasped quietly. “Don’t tell me you’re some kind of drug dealer or something???”

He laughed, this time, out loud. “You’re so funny, I swear to God.” 

For some odd reason, your heart skipped one beat. 

“Don’t avoid the question!” You almost stutter. 

“Hmm...” Jiwon rubbed his chin, thinking. “Let’s just say I work in the music industry...”

“Wow!!!” You beamed. “What are you, some kind of music composer? Writer?”

The guy laughed again and shook his head in disbelief. “You could say so.”

“Which entertainment are you working for? SM? No, AOMG? You kinda look like someone who could be friends with Jay Park!” You said excitedly. “Sorry, it’s the caffeine, I get a little too excited sometimes.” You giggled. 

“I don’t mind.” Although you couldn’t see his face through the mask, his eyes turned into crescents again. You knew he was smiling. “No, I don’t work for AOMG sadly.”

“What a bummer! I was about to ask you to introduce me to Gray too!!!” You joked. 

“You like hiphop?”

“I guess? I never really take too much time to memorize all the artists’ names though.” You shrugged. “The only guys I recalled clearly were Jay Park and Gray, and I guess, those two guys from ikon that I said kinda looked like you earlier.”

He suddenly cleared his throat. “Uh... Enough talking about me, you mentioned about taking a short course?”

“Oh, yeah, I’m taking some digital illustration class around four to five times a week.” You replied excitedly, totally oblivious that the guy you were talking with, was changing the topic. 

“Awesome.” He said, amused. “You uh, draw human and stuff? Or just you know, cartoony, or I don’t know... I really don’t know too much about art.” He awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. 

“I’m focusing on fashion illustration, and also some advertising. Occasionally I do paintings too, but that’s just purely to waste some time...”

“Ah, I have a friend who’s super into painting as well!” He said with excitement, that he at least knew something. 

“Oh? Do you have their Instagram or something? Can I see their works?”

Jiwon cursed silently. He really did not think the words that escaped his mouth through. 

He couldn’t exactly show Mino from Winner’s Instagram account, can’t he? 

“Wait... I— Oh, thank the heavens!”

“Huh?”

He took his phone out from his pocket, and swiped through his gallery for a while, before showing it to you. 

“He sent this to me a few days ago, it’s his latest and I don’t think he has posted it online yet.”

You took your time to analyze the artwork. “Hmm... he has a very distinct style, it’s colorful yet dark at the same time.” Your eyes were still fixated on the phone. “I like it though, it seems like it has a deeper meaning.”

The lad smiled at you secretly. Admiring how passionate you were talking about art, that made you seem even more attractive.

Time passed by so quickly. Both of you were so indulged into the conversation, that was basically pure random talk, that you did not realize that it had been almost three hours since you dropped a can of coffee to the ground, and a stranger with messy hair insisted on buying you another can. 

“Whoa! It’s already this late?!” You were shocked when you saw your watch. “Yah, we should probably head back now...”

“Yeah, you’re right.” He sighed. “I have to admit though,”

“Admit what?”

“I kinda don’t want our conversation to end this early... You can say I’m hitting on you all you want!” He giggled. 

Another beat was skipped. 

“You know what... yeah, it’s mutual!” You giggled too, but a blush crept onto your cheeks without you realizing. 

It seemed like he was grinning from eye to eye, you could not really tell because of the mask. Speaking of the mask, he had not been taking them off since you first met him, making you curious of how he would look without it. 

“Where do you live? Is it far? I can take you back home if you want.”

“I-It’s okay, I can just take a cab.” Did I just stutter?

“My place is nearby and I don’t mind.” He said, shrugging. 

“No really, exactly why I don’t want you to do so.” You refused politely. 

“Then I’ll pay for your cab?”

“No, Jiwon... you don’t have to—” 

“I insist, again.” He winked. 

This time, you were sure your heart was about to stop. 

Just the luck, a cab immediately drove by, and he quickly called it. “Give me your number.” He suddenly said. 

“I thought you wasn’t going to ask.” You smirked playfully, but deep down, your heart was doing a backflip. 

“So I can pay you back on the cab!”

“Does that mean I’ll see you again in the future?” You hummed, liking the idea.

“Yeah...” He folded his arms. “Probably, most probably.”

“Alright.” You cheekily grinned after you typed your number on his phone. “Umm, I’ll see ya?”

“I’ll text you later.” He waved. 

The whole trip back to your house, you could not stop smiling to yourself like an idiot. You literally felt like you were a high schooler again. It had been quite some time that you had not met a somewhat “romantic” encounter, if you could call it that. 

You were too smitten, that you actually forgot that until you both bid your goodbyes, you still had not see the face behind his mask. 

Just a few minutes after you arrived home, with a little unsettled feelings because of the face mask thingy, a notification popped up on your phone. 

“Hey! Arrived safely? I forgot to... you know, show you my face today, didn’t I?” Followed by a grinning emoji. 

You wasted no time in replying back. “What are you gonna do about it then? Send me a selfie?” You teased. 

A minute later, another notification popped up again. 

“I hope this doesn’t seem like a catfish lol. You can call me Bobby too, if you want!”

You did not expect him to actually send you a picture. 

Nor did you expect him to look that handsome. 

Also, you didn’t exactly expect him to be... 

ACTUALLY BOBBY FROM iKON???

Bobby is just doing the social distancing y'all, that’s why he didn’t open the mask 😂😂😂

Thoughts on iKON's i DECIDE:

I want to start off by saying how proud I am of the boys. ALL of them. Hanbin made wonderful songs and this album is proof of just how bright his future is. Jiwon, Jinhwan, Yunhyeong, Junhoe, Donghyuk, and Chanwoo did an amazing job on this album and in handling themselves throughout this ordeal. Lastly, I want to commend Jiwon and Donghyuk on a job well done with their behind-the-scenes contributions to this album.

Anyway, here are my thoughts and opinions for every track on "i DECIDE."

Ah Yeah

I thought it was a smart choice to start the album with this. My first impression was that it sounds powerful. There's an aggressiveness to it that reminded me of early to mid-2000s pop-punk. This goes the same for the lyrics.

Ah Yeah is that song I would've played in the middle of a house party in high school to get people moving, jumping, and singing along. This isn't a bad thing. I'm actually amazed how a new song can evoke strong feelings of nostalgia. I feel like I grew up listening to Ah Yeah.

🔥 Chanwoo and Yunhyeong stood out in this song.

Dive

Let me just say that I did NOT expect this for the lead single. I can't believe they went country, but it is so GENIUS. It's a really catchy song, which isn't a surprise because it has heavy pop elements.

I could hear Hanbin in how some of the lines were pronounced. It was reminiscent of Love Scenario in that aspect. Again, this isn't a bad thing. It means that iKON has a distinct style, regardless of the genre.

The lyrics are interesting. They give off a star-crossed lovers vibe that is sprinkled with a little bit of Bonnie and Clyde/ Natural Born Killers edge.

🔥 Jiwon and Junhoe stood out in this song.

All the World

I loved the retro vibes of this song. It didn't sound dated, but you could clearly hear what type of music and from what decade All the World was influenced by. I thought this was the most pop song in the album. It was also the song that made me want to get up and dance.

The jazz elements introduced by the trumpets was great. I thought it elevated the song from a simple pop song to a BOP. It's such a feel good song, everything from the lyrics to the melody.

🔥 Yunhyeong and Chanwoo stood out in this song.

Holding On

I teared up a bit halfway into this song. I don't know why, especially since I didn't even see the lyrics yet. It just triggered something in me. What surpsied me though, upon listening to it again, was that I teared up again. And I realized that it wasn't a meloncholic emotion, rather it was relief.

This made more sense when I finally looked at the lyrics. I thought it was AMAZING how they were able to convey the lyrics through the music. The song's about letting go and accepting that, but the fact that I felt that before knowing what the lyrics were about is mindblowing.

I also want to add that the electric keyboard was GREAT. It gave the song an additional layer that makes it hard to forget.

🔥 Donghyuk, Jinhwan, and Junhoe stood out in this song.

Flower

First, I am so proud of Donghyuk. He did a phenomenal job on Flower. It has me excited to see and hear what else he has in-store in the future.

Now, the song. I thought it was the right one to close the album with. It sounds very chill. Like it's a song you'll put on when you just want to sit around and relax.

I appreciated how vocal-heavy it is. Jiwon's melodious rap was a nice touch. The muffled intro was interesting though. I only say that because it reminded me of Hanbin. This isn't to take anything away from Jiwon or Donghyuk. I think it just shows (again) just how distinct iKON's sound is.

🔥 Junhoe stood out in this song.

Special mentions:

Jiwon

Honestly, Jiwon is so good in this album. I mean, he always is, but this felt different. I had this feeling that he just wanted to show his versatility as a rapper, lyricist, and producer with these songs.

His vibe here is similar to that in Love and Fall. You could tell he was having fun. Maybe it was to make the most out of a difficult situation. Maybe it was to reassure everyone that iKON will continue on. Whatever the reason, Jiwon shined in this album.

The Trumpets

The use of trumpets in this album was AMAZING. They added this beautifully complex layer of sound that elevated each song. I really wish they'd give iKON a live band for the upcoming tour. I just know it'll sound great live.

Final Thoughts:

I didn't know what to expect with this comeback. I knew it was going to be good. It was just difficult knowing Hanbin wasn't going to be a part of this. After listening to the album, I feel fine.

Yes, it's still bittersweet. But the fact that they kept his songs... that made it special. It comforts me knowing that they are still seven, even though one of them isn't physically there.

I wish nothing but the best for the boys. They worked so hard on this and it clearly shows. It's a great comeback and I hope everyone else realizes that.

So, I've been away from SL for a long while. I pop back in every once in a while, but I keep getting bored with it. Now, I'm back again. First thing I decided to do was upgrade my look just a little. I am also fixing up my store. I have 4 stores. SW Couture (Shaydie Whitlock Couture), BW Thrift Shop (Bunny Whitlock Thrift Shop), TW Gestures (Tequila Whitlock Gestures), & TW2 Pet Shop (Tink Whitlock Pet Shop). I will be working on them all for a bit. So nothing new will be coming out in the stores for now. Anyway, that's what I'm up to. We'll see how it goes. I hope I don't get bored again. December Wrap Up

Wow. It has been a whole twelve months since we have started this blog and now we are on the final, official post of the year! A mega-post compiling the top songs of the past year, as well as official departures and disbandments of groups from 2019, will be up on our main blog @kpopsunbae​ (make sure to go and follow us there for more content, although it will be quite a bit different than what we put on this blog). 

As some of you may know, this blog (as well as the previous one, @kpopotd​) are project blogs that end once the year is done. This means that while we will no longer post on this blog it will remain as an archive. We will however be back with a third blog in the future as a continuation of this blog (it will cover 2016 and onwards!). This does not mean that we will go completely off grid once 2019 is done though! 

This coming year of 2020 has a lot in store for us, your K-Pop Sunbaes! We currently have a website to overhaul, an Instagram to properly launch, and of course we will continue releasing podcast episodes! Remember to follow us on Twitter too, our handle there is @kpopsunbaes (updates will be on there and you can interact with us too!). 

On a final note, we are so appreciative for the love that you all have given this blog over the past year. It has been such a fun experience and the three of us have had a blast working together on the blog, having meetings, and eventually completing just under 900 posts. It stars Choi Min Soo, Moon Jung Hee, and Kim Soo Hyun.)  December 2009: Will it Snow for Christmas (This melodrama brought in around 10% viewership ratings. It stars Go Soo and Han Ye Seul.)

December 2010: Athena: Goddess of War (This action/spy drama is a spin off of the hit show IRIS. It’s in the same universe as IRIS, but stars Joo Woo Sung, Cha Seung Won, Soo Ae, Lee Ji Ah, and Super Junior’s Choi Siwon. IRIS’s cast also made cameos throughout. It averaged around 15% viewership ratings.) December 2011: What’s Up? (This musical drama stars Lim Joo Hwan, BIGBANG’s Daesung, Lim Joo Eun, Kim Ji Won, and Jo Jung Suk.)  December 2011: Vampire Idol (This sitcom style drama stars Lee Jung, Davichi’s Kang Min Kyung, Lee Soo Hyuk, Kim Woo Bin, and Hong Jung Hyun. December 2013: You Who Came From the Stars/My Love from the Star (This hit romance/fantasy drama stars megastars Kim Soo Hyun and Jun Ji Hyun. The duo had previously acted together in the movie The Thieves. Dal Shabet’s Serri and Subin, former miss A member Suzy, and former 2NE1 member Dara make cameos throughout. Lyn, K. The show did incredibly well and ended up selling out products that the characters wore, being the highest rated drama of it’s time (not only in South Korea but throughout Asia), and bringing in over 20% viewership ratings.) 

December 2014: Healer (This action drama stars Ji Chang Wook and Park Min Young. The show averaged around 7% viewership ratings, but while it only did moderately well in South Korea it boosted Ji’s international fandom immensely.)  December 2015: Remember- War of the Son (This thriller stars Yoo Seung Ho, Park Woo Sung, Park Min Young, Min Namkoong, and Jung Hye Sung. It did fairly well, bringing in just under two million theater admissions.)  December 18, 2013: The Attorney (This law drama, which was inspired by a true story, stars Song Kang Ho, Kim Young Ae, Oh Dal Soo, ZE:A’s Im Si Wan, and Kwak Do Won. It became the 8th best-selling movie in Korea of all time with over 11 million admissions. It won many awards at various award shows.)  December 24, 2013: The Suspect (This action/thriller starring Gong Yoo was a box office hit, bringing in over 4 million admissions. It received praise from various western newspapers and reviewers.) December 31, 2014: The Tenor - Lirico Sprinto (This movie, which is based on the true story of Bae Jae Chul, stars Yoo Ji Tae, Yusuke Iseya, and Cha Ye Ryun. Q. What are your memories from Japan? MJ: I ate pork cutlet curry ramen! Oh, was it curry? (conversing with staff for a bit) It might not be, I’m not sure (laughs). It has a chewy texture so I’m guessing it’s curry. It was definitely ramen (laughs).

Q. Closest K-Pop idol? MJ: MYTEEN’s Gukheon (previous stage name Xiheon). He’s a dongsaeng who I used to train with previously. He’s busy since he’s currently in the midst of promotions but I’d like to meet up with him once he’s more free. It’ll be nice if one day we could promote together. We know each other well so I think we’ll be able to produce a good synergy effect putting our forces together.

Q. What are your memories from Japan? JinJin: I went to Don Quijote and bought peach flavored konjac jelly as well as KitKat flavors exclusive to Japan. I also forgot to bring along with me shorts and a singlet but it it was so hot so I bought them! Being able to travel with my family after a long while was also a good memory! I also went up Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and experiences a lot!

Q. Closest K-Pop idol? JinJin: I often go drinking as a trio with SEVENTEEN’s Hoshi who’s the same age and B.A.P’s Zelo. I like alcohol similar to cocktails where you mix stuff. I heard that Highball’s famous in Japan so I tried drinking it and it was really yummy! I think it’s a good compliment to any kind of food.

Cha Eunwoo

Q. What are your memories from Japan?

Eunwoo: I really ate all kinds of stuff. Takoyaki, tebasaki, hitsumabushi! I also went to the convenience store after our concert ended. I really liked the Jumbo Monaca in particular! I think I ate at least 10 during this tour? I ate one earlier on too (laughs). In Tokyo, I could walk even whilst surrounded by so many others. On the streets. I was really happy just by that alone.

Q. Closest K-Pop idol? Eunwoo: I’m close with the SEVENTEEN members. I respect SHINee and BTS sunbae-nims. I want to take after SHINee sunbae-nims in terms of their music style and as for BTS sunbae-nims, their passion is really cool!

Moonbin

Q. What are your memories from Japan? Moonbin: I’ve a vivid memory about their ramen. The beef stock was evident so it was delicious! And Korea doesn’t have a ticketing machine culture so that was pretty fascinating. I want to one day visit Sapporo when it’s winter. I’ve always thought their snow sculptures from their snow festival are pretty. I want to go to their hot springs too!

Q. Closest K-Pop idol? Moonbin: SEVENTEEN’s Boo Seungkwan. He has a really bright personality so we managed to grow close quickly. His bright facial expressions and his gestures are really of big help. iKON’s Chanwoo and myself are the same age and even share the same birthday. We were models for children’s clothing together during elementary school and we still keep in contact even now.

Q. What are your memories from Japan? Rocky: I went to Don Quijote and there were so many prizes in one place that I was shocked! I was overwhelmed by the quantity so it was hard choosing a machine and I ended up just looking around. I still had fun though. Ah, I only bought konjac jelly!

Q. Closest K-Pop idol? Rocky: SF9’s Chani is a colleague who I share 6-7 years with ever since elementary school. I call him my friend for life. As for SEVENTEEN’s Dino, our groups had a lot of overlapping promotions cycles so I often saw him and we talk a lot with each other. We’re both in charge of dance so we connected.

Yoon Sanha

Q. What are your memories from Japan? Sanha: We bought a lot of snack at Don Quijote to eat all together at the hotel! Taking a picture with the Glico uncle as the background was also a good memory. I couldn’t replicate his pose (laughs).

Q. Closest K-Pop idol? Sanha: Wanna One’s Daehwi. We got closer over talking whenever our promotion cycles overlapped. Golden Child’s Bomin and THE BOYZ’s Sunwoo are from the same school as me. THE BOYZ’s Eric has been my friend since our trainee days! I went bowling with Bomin before heading off to Japan. It was his first time bowling so I taught him. My best score’s around 140? I’m not extremely good at it (laughs).

Where Do I Buy My Albums?

Choice Music LA:

I bought Return, I am WHO?, Empathy, Twenty’s Noir and Regular_Irregular from here, Return and I am WHO in-store and Empathy, Twenty’s Noir and Regular_Irregular online.

I really like their store, it contains many Korean albums, with some Japanese specials as well, lightsticks, and other merchandise, official and unofficial. I really liked that they had older releases in store as well, going as far back is O?RUL8,2? for BTS and surprisingly carrying 130 Mood: Trbl by DEAN, as well as more unknown groups such as Noir and Black6ix.

Ordering off of their website is pretty good as well, if you’re too lazy or far to drive to the store in LA. I pre-ordered both Empathy and Regular_Irregular. When I pre-ordered Regular_Irregular, I also purchased Twenty’s Noir since NOIR’s newest album wasn’t available. Regular_Irregular and Twenty’s Noir arrived pretty quickly; I ordered the albums on October 7th and they arrived on October 18. Empathy definitely took longer than these two albums, but not by much. Both times, though, the albums arrived in amazing condition, without any dents in the packaging and the albums neatly wrapped in bubble wrap. The price of shipping isn’t that expensive either; the last time I checked, it was only $5.

I really enjoy buying my albums from Choice and will continue to buy from there.

Depop:

I bought AL1 and 7 for 7 on Depop. Depop is a pretty good site for buying slightly older albums, as they are usually cheaper. I got AL1 for only $9, which is why it didn’t come with a photocard. Later, I bought 7 for 7 for $16 on a whim, telling myself that it was pretty cheap, considering that I didn’t have to drive to buy it or pay $5 for shipping. Do I regret it? ...No, not really.

I also enjoy purchasing albums along with other K-pop merchandise off of Depop and will most likely buy from there again.

Mandu Apparel:

    I ordered my first album off of Mandu Apparel, Seventeen’s Teen,Age. The shipping price was pretty expensive at the time, around $8, making the album cost, in total, $32. It actually took quite some time for the album to arrive, around 2, maybe even close to 3 weeks.

With my experience here, the likelyhood of me purchasing another album from Mandu Apparel is rather low. I think, for the price of the shipping, the album should have arrived earlier than it did.

Target :

I get all of my BTS albums from Target. This reason mainly being because Target is really close to my house and because I often get Target gift cards as gifts from my relatives and my church. Thankfully, purchasing albums from Target will count for both US and Korean charts. I ordered Love Yourself: Tear online and bought Love Yourself: Answer in store. I ordered Love Yourself: Tear on May 20 and it came on May 2. The albums were is good condition, without any sort of scratches or dents. Surprisingly, when I purchased the Love Yourself: Answer album in store, there were some visible scratches and smudges. This may have been because many of the Love Yourself: Answer albums had flaws due to production error, the fact that the album cover material was a matte holographic material that made scratches and smudges more visible, or there were issues when shipping the albums from Korea to America.

I will continue to purchase albums from Target (maybe getting EXO’s album) since it’s near my house and pretty cheap.

KPOP Republic:

    I purchased The War: The Power of Music, Shoot Me, and The Story of Light: Epilogue from this store. Although I’m pretty sure that both KPOP Republic and Choice Music are roughly the same distance from my house, I got to KPOP Republic more often as I often drive by that area. I really like going to KPOP Republic because the workers are really nice, and I like the layout of the store; it is spacious, with shelves along the wall, a table for merchandise and a display case for signed albums is the center of the store, along with another table near the entrance of the store for more merchandise and albums . However, the spacious-ness and minimal set-up of the store can also be a disadvantage, as KPOP Republic usually only carries the newest releases in store, and usually only from bigger groups, making it harder to purchase older albums from groups that aren’t too popular in America.

I will contine to buy albums form KPOP Republic since it is near my house. I also signed up to be a part of their mailing list or something, and apparently if you sign up, you recieve a free poster on your birthday, which is great. 

     In this blog, I talked about my small album collection along with where I buy albums. Out of all the places, my favorite place to buy albums would probably be either KPOP Republic of Choice Music LA. In addition, writing this blog post allowed me to realize just how much money I’ve spent on albums. Adding up the prices of the albums, and not including tax or shipping costs, these albums costed over $260. Wow.
