It's so fuckin weird seeing The Terror doing numbers on tumblr bc I just recently found out the author of the book it's based on is Dan Simmons, a guy I mostly know from the sci-fi paperweights Illium and Hyperion wherein he writes the POV of a classics professor who is SHOCKED to find man-on-man action in (an identical facsimile of) ancient Greece.

Hey, just binged all of Ilium in the span of one day and noticed the last update was two years ago (character transmedia too) to my ongoing despair and queer agony. I’m guessing that’s because lockdown ended, but is there any chance of a revival/continuation happening?
Hi hello! Zoë (writer/creator) here! Basically what happened was I (and about half of the cast and crew) graduated college in May of 2021 and the project kind of fell by the wayside. We filmed a few episodes past what we released, and I really want to make the rest of the show.
The difficulty is that people have jobs and/or grad school now, and we live all over the place, so it’s going to be even harder to get everything filmed than it was when we were mostly college students finishing our degrees online.
Basically, I/we do plan to finish Ilium. It might take a while and will likely look different than we planned, but that’s okay! Knowing that people still care is really encouraging. Please feel free to share what currently exists of the show with your friends and to follow us here and on our other social media for updates.
Anyway, sorry for going silent for two years. Now you know what happened.
More support for the show means more show is more likely!

So I was nerding around this morning, and I realized, somehow for the first time, that Troy effectively guards the entrance to the Dardanelles (Strait of Gallipoli/Hellespont), which would make it one of the most strategic locations in the ancient world. How did I not know this? Am I mistaken? How far would it have been from the shore in ancient times? This seems important?

Map from University of Delaware.
ETA:
Inhabited from the Early Bronze Age (3000 BCE) through to the 12th century CE the archaeological site which is now called Troy is 5 km from the coast but was once next to the sea. The site was situated in a bay created by the mouth of the river Skamanda and occupied a strategically important position between Aegean and Eastern civilizations by controlling the principal point of access to the Black Sea, Anatolia and the Balkans from both directions by land and sea. In particular, the difficulty in finding favourable winds to enter the Dardanelles may well have resulted in ancient sailing vessels standing by near Troy. Consequently, the site became the most important Bronze Age city in the North Aegean, reaching the height of its prosperity in the middle Bronze Age, contemporary with the Mycenaean civilization on the Greek mainland and the Hittite empire to the East.

Here’s the new cover for Ilium!
Tumblr media
If you’re interested, Ilium is a Trojan War adaptation with what I hope is a fairly original twist, I finished the first draft for NaNoWriMo 2023 and am currently working on the second draft.

icicles along the wall
For @obiquinbingo the square Huddling for Warmth
Quinlan tucked in the last youngling, then moved out of the room. The group of ten younglings were all sleeping around the ship's furnace, packed in tightly together. He flicked off the light. Hopefully, they’d get some rest now.
Of course, this disaster would only happen to him and Obi-Wan. They’d brought the younglings safely to Ilium, both delighted to have some freedom from their masters and to spend time together. The younglings had all returned from the caves, each with a kyber crystal clenched in their fists. Together, they’d trailed back to the ship, everyone holding hands as the snow whirled around them.
Obi-Wan had gone up to the cockpit, only to be told by Huyang that the snowstorm was too vicious, they couldn’t take off in this weather. They’d have to wait at least 12 hours before the ship's clamping system would unlock and they could leave the planet.
Quinlan made his way back to Obi-Wan, who was waiting for him in their room. The younglings had been moved out of their dorms, but they’d decided it was better to stay here, close to the cockpit in case of emergencies.

casual The Iliad-based AU plot bunny
having a conversation w/the lovely @across-the-seas-to-home (writer, student & Odysseus aficionado) & I came up w/THIS:
"Real Life AU where the Achaeans take their families to -insert place-, an expensive island retreat. They start beef w/Priam's family (can't remember his Hittite name). oh & Telemachus pretends to drown so lifeguard!Kili can use CPR on him
nothing follows the Iliad strictly. just chaos. fluff. crack.
the gods are the island's regular residents & workers who gossip & subtly help either side pull pranks, like a typical 00s family rivalry movie"
if this inspires a fic, art, or film, TAG ME--

For those of you that have Wattpad l published the first chapter of my book Ilium- my username is in my bio so please go check it out!
Hopefully one day I’ll be able to publish it in book form.
I’ll probably post at least an excerpt on my writing-only sideblog (also in my bio), if not the whole chapter since it’s only 1011 words.
Anyway I would really appreciate if those of you who can would check it out and comment what you think!!!
