Hey yall! I thought I'd share my commission prices, I'm trying to save up to get an apartment by the end of next semester (almost out of this one, so ill be able to do alot during my spring break), so I don't have to live in this dorm and can have my cats living with me (they're basically non registered ESAs for me, I get alot of stress and they help me calm down when I get too much)
Tumblr media
Things that aren't on the basic sheet that I get asked as well:
Ref sheets start at $25, comes with a flat full-body, color pallette, cm close up and basic info. Adding another full body costs $6 each, and adding a headshot costs $3 each.
Customs are $10 on a base (I make sure to use ones on DA that say I'm allowed to use for commission work), $17 for a hand drawn custom.
I take PayPal and Venmo! Thank you for looking!
Prices may change depending on how complex your character is. (Extra limbs/markings/accessories/anything that gives me extra effort and will take more time might up the price a bit)
I do most things, but I will reject your commission if I feel too uncomfortable drawing what you ask me to. It's not personal at all, I just have my limits.

ref/expression sheets for two NPCs from my upcoming dnd campaign! everyone say hi to the kingkiller twins! I talked about them a little in the tags on this post, but their full lore is under the cut!
CARRION AND VALENTINE MY BELOVED.......
ok so carrion and valentine have always always always been each other’s biggest supporters in everything. for much of their lives, the only thing they had was each other, so the two are metaphorically attached at the hip. they’re attached in a literal sense, too- the two have actual twin telepathy, and are able to read each other’s thoughts/emotions and feel each other’s pain.
carrion, despite being the “younger” twin, has always been protective of and felt responsible for his brother. they were orphaned in childhood after their parents died in a circus accident, so their childhood was a bit hard. even ignoring his seemingly never-ending illnesses and pains, valentine has always been a bit strange; ever since he was a child, he has been plagued by visions from what was at first an unknown, otherworldly force. as he grew older, the visions grew stronger, and when he and carrion were thirteen, their foster mother threw valentine out on the streets, wanting nothing to do with his strangeness and growing frustrated by the financial burden that his sickliness caused. ever loyal to his brother, carrion refused to stay in a home where valentine was not welcome, and the two spent the rest of their childhood as street urchins. carrion, a born troublemaker with a silver tongue and a sharp mind, soon grew into one of the best con artists the underground had ever seen. and don’t be fooled by valentine’s frailness and kind eyes-- he a mischief maker himself, and would more often than not play a key role in his brother’s schemes.
by adulthood, carrion and valentine were living rather comfortably on the coin they “earned” from their various schemes and heists. however, despite the niche the twins found as con artists, something still bothered them: valentine’s visions were growing more and more frequent, and whoever was sending them had even tried to speak through his body on more than one occasion, which caused valentine to seize and choke out half formed sentences as he writhed on the ground. determined to uncover which god or entity was trying to communicate with them, the two eventually came to a shocking revelation: the visions were coming from the long-lost sun god, who had been all but erased from history after they had abandoned humanity one thousand years ago, plunging the world into eternal night and an endless winter. based on valentine’s visions, the twins have come to believe that the sun god is not dead or purposefully absent, but rather asleep and in need of rescuing. labeled fools at best and heretics at worst, the two began to preach their beliefs and eventually started a small but devout cult called the Slumbering Dawn. in my setting, the gods’ chosen champions take on the surname st [god], hence valentine’s last name-- he doesn’t know the name of the god he’s championing, so dawn will have to do. valentine is the figurehead of the cult, but carrion is the the leader and orchestrater-- he’s basically applying the skills he used as a con artist but, like, for a good cause now. which brings us to the start of the campaign! the party will work with the Slumbering Dawn to bring the sun back, but spoiler alert! turns out the sun was a little bit evil the whole time and put asleep by the moon for the good of humanity. oopsie! i plan on the final boss fight to be against the sun, who has been awakened by the well-meaning party and who has forcibly possessed valentine’s body. unfortunately in order to kill the sun they’ll have to kill valentine, but what’s a dnd campaign without a little major character death?
personality wise, carrion is much more outgoing than his brother. he’s pretty much the lovable rogue stereotype: charismatic, quick-witted, slutty, etc. he’s a nice guy, though, despite being a con artist and the leader of a cult. he’s also a hopeless romantic, and head over heels in love with another NPC, ruthie st cyr (yes i stole her name). he loves his brother, and will always be his biggest supporter, and is fully dedicated to the cult, but part of him is a bit insecure about the fact that he isn’t the one who is beloved by a god; does god hate him? is there something wrong with him? is he impure? oh also he’s trans <3
valentine is shy and reserved, but very kind. he’s just as mischievous and quick-witted as his brother, but a lot more subtle about it. he’s very happy to be chosen by the sun god-- for most of his life he was an outcast and felt like a burden, but now he finally has something to make his life have worth.  he’s still insecure about his position though, and part of him will always worry. is he good enough? does he deserve this? can he really bring back the sun? also he’s gay <3
above all, family is the most important thing to both of them, and they would go to the ends of the earth and back for each other. they may squabble and see the world a bit differently, but they have absolutely nothing but love for each other!
carrion is a mastermind rogue and valentine is a light domain cleric!

Voltron Season Seven: Thoughts and Reactions
As you can see, I am out of hibernation mode ;p Just finished up a bit ago.
My thoughts in no particular order on season seven. Prepare for a few unintelligible spazzes and random questions that like, why were these not answered? Oh Voltron writers, you and your plot holes. Tagged with all of my previously mentioned ones so here goes!
Okay, so Adam? As much as I didn’t care for how he wasn’t supporting Shiro, I was excited by his role and inclusion in the story! Also, haha, I laughed because I named the one character in my Keith and Shiro backstory Adam and he’s a pilot too, haha. They definitely aren’t the same one because mine was a jerk, but I love that somehow I still got that name. (or maybe that’s how he and Shiro got to talking after Shiro confronts him for what he said to Keith? hehe. Look at me ;p)
But then. When they were mobilizing to fight the first wave I’m like, is Adam a pilot? And then we saw him and then his ship blinked out… gosh. Shiro at the wall with his name broke my heart. There’s a lot of regret there. Definitely something I wish had been further explored, but I’m not surprised they didn’t. There’s a lot that has been skipped over already.
So… Shiro has a disease that gets brought up once, never impacted him at all in the first six seasons and… never mentioned again? Er… what was the point of that exactly? (clone body not have the illness?)
Oh baby Keef. I cheered when he punched Griffin. Glad to see Griffin has grown up since then. But uh, can someone confirm for me the new cadet pilot with the glasses. Is her name… Wasabi? Usagi? And while I adore my Keith backstory this one was endearing too. And his dad died in a fire? Gosh. I had a feeling after the fireman refs but to hear it confirmed. Sad.
Where did Axca go? Like, she left the base with the Paladins and they have no resources to provide her a ship. So…? I’m curious with her popping up at the end behind Krolia and Keith at the grave… interesting. Once it was disproved that she wasn’t Keith’s twin I thought she might be Krolia’s sister but no mention when they met so… hmm. Curious and curioser. (does she like Keith? Hehe ♥ I admit I think they’re pretty asthecially pleasing together and I love Axca’s new design.)
Veronica is a fucking badass. As soon as she showed up on screen I’m like, that’s Lance’s sister. My sister was like, no, and I’m like, uh, her name is Veronica, coloring is the same including the blue eyes and in that really crappy family projection photo from season one there was a relative in a military uniform. Damn, I love her so much. Almost cried when I thought she died (twice xD). Also, her teasing Lance about Allura and her little smirk smile there? I died. So fucking cute.
This is my personal preference but I did not care for the game show episode at all, nor the “reason” behind it. There were a couple cute moments in it (all of them choosing each other to leave and I winced when Lance kept being called the dumb one and could taste the angst) but overall, my least favorite filler. And this coming from someone who adores game shows xD
The “lost in space” episode also wasn’t high on my list. I loved the idea of it and them forming a circle (that was so flipping cute) to stay together with the check ins (and a note to Keith and Krolia’s time together) but the words exchanged? I get it and didn’t mind but they never *really* resolved it. Not really. And some pretty hurtful things were said. Also, the fact they have almost fatal oxygen depletion based upon Keith’s indicator and their weary lines under their eyes, but then they literally bounce back full power to fight? Just throw the realism out the window. Just like the castle of lions losing all oxygen in a matter of hours two seasons ago xDD
How have we ever survived without the space wolf? Seriously? I’m bummed his name is not Yorak but I’ll take Cosmo. Very cute! Love how keith is waiting for the wolf to name himself. Oh, sweetie.
The Blade of Marmora luring with the Druids was delicious. Loved that bit. Glad Kolivan made it out. Wasn’t surprised when Krolia left the main cast; it was getting crowded and given that the writers have difficulty managing characters on a regular basis at times the more the less merrier.
On that note, loved Romelle in the first episode but she practically disappeared for the rest of the season. Disappointed. Thought her and Hunk were hilarious.
Same token bummed Matt was offscreen for most of it. But again, see above.
The three year time gap was interesting. Never really explained well either; pretty much I think a way for earth to get completely overrun by Galra. On that note, loved all of the Sam episodes, think the new pilots are pretty neat additions. Particularly love… Usagi? Wasabi? Kinkade too; a man of few words and I adore his name. Iverson too was a pleasant surprise and I loved his apology to Keith later and his constant backing of Sam. Also, Collen is a badass too. I do have to give credit to the writers; they make some amazingly strong female characters and it’s such a breath of fresh air (from watching YYH it was a stark reminder how things have changed over the years in terms of representation across the board on many things).
But one woman I did not care for was the Admiral. Boo hiss. I also hate that I called her turning on them as she was adamant throughout the entire thing about protecting earth in “her way” and I was waiting for this move. She did save the Paladins lives but she endangered them in the first place so… I acknowledge her desire to protect earth but am disappointed in how her character was played out. (and honestly, why the fuck would she trust Sendak to keep up his end of the deal? Why? Bit of weaker writing there).
Speaking of characters… where’s Haggar? At the end with the giant robot my sister and I were arguing who was driving it; I was Team Lotor and she was Team Haggar. Nada to both of us. Very interesting with that result too;  how was one Altean doing all that? Hmmm. And with the colony missing something is definitely up.
The Hunk family feels I was not expecting and loved them. I was glad he didn’t endanger the team anymore after he found his parents were not accessible, but dios I felt so bad. It’s hard especially to see Lnace and Pidge with their families and he with none. Loved his and Keith’s moment too. ♥ Keith was particularly awkwardly sweet and I loved it.
And Lance’s family! Gosh. Him hugging his niece and nephew broke my heart and then his being mobbed by his family stomped it into the ground with love. So. Beautiful. My boy has his family and I am so so happy.
Speaking of the families! Haha, I’m excited that I was write in that both Lance and Hunk’s families are stateside and I am going with my headcanon of Arizona (Garrison location) given how they were *right there* to be rescued. My childhood besties idea for Lance and Hunk when Lance immigrated over is still well and strong!!!
Back to Lance. I was so so so excited to see him getting some really nice shots and pieces in this season. The sword (c’mon broadsword, let’s see you come back too), the giant cannon gun, the amazing sniper shots (hoshit don’t get me started on that part, I love good sniper cover and damnnn ♥) his attempts to seat everyone in Lions (whoops xD), his stepping up to really support Keith and be second in command... just so much good stuff for my boy ♥ I was freaking out when Red didn’t come right away in the summoning thing after he and Veronica went under fire, but I’m like, Red always does things differently. And then she came in like ajdfkajfklda right when Lance was closing his eyes and thinking it was the end and just, so good. Great timing on that part.
Shiro’s new arm… loved the angst and pain as first one didn’t calibrate xD I’m terrible. I will admit I’m not sold on the design; very bulky and I dislike that it’s not attached; that’s not a proper hug! But I am happy he has one so will go with that.
Er, this is getting long. Last few.
How was Shiro breathing in space in fight against sendak? Someone, please tell me. But also yesss, loved that the two of them had a final fight. Brings back memories. When Keith saved him I really wanted a throwback to the “as many times as it takes” but alas, no go.
On Sendak… is he the main big bad? He sure has quite the Galra fleet. How do Ezor and Zethrid’s turn to piracy factor in? Was expecting something else with Lotor given their mentions of him early on. Is space just one giant war out there right now? We never really found out any details and here I was expecting Axca to fill us in.
The Atlas turning into its own Voltron was super cool. Loved all of the fight scenes although I admit I get bored with all the constant blasts so would have liked those shortened down and more character stuff, but it is a show geared for little kids so… boom boom pow.
The very end speech via Shiro had me on my toes as I didn’t think any of our team died but I was legit slowly starting to panic that somehow the new cadets were going to be the new Voltron pilots because ours were unavailable Phew, not the case! Loved the little hospital scenes popping around, particularly Lance’s nephew wearing his helmet and then Keith waking up to Krolia there. Oh, and Matt getting a hug from his mom! (and that ponytail! ♥ I love guys with a nice ponytail, mm, weakness).
Overall giving this season a 7/10 rating. Not my lowest, definitely not my highest. Very much appreciated though having a longer season to watch.
If you have thoughts feel free to comment on the post! I will not be posting any asks with spoilers in the ask until next Saturday though so best way to get a response is comment here. What did you all think of the season?

Hi! First of all I love your art and I love you
Hello and Thank You!!!! I’m not sure if you’re talking about a fan comic or an original, or long or short but I’ll give you some tips. GRANTED I am not a professional and you may find a different way that is easier for you.
1.) Think of a basic storyline or prompt. Like, “Man is dying and is going to a mountain to see it before he dies and meets his DESTINY???” it can be stupid. It can be silly or vague so long as you have something to start with.
2.) Think of the protagonist, as well as a bit of the timeframe or universe. Are they human? Alien? Medieval? Elf? For our example here lets say its a medieval man from a heavily forested area. He is a lumberjack who hates potatoes and his old man told him stories of the mountain in the west that holds a magic temple; only the pure of heart may enter. He is dying, and wants to see this mythical place before he passes. Draw a few examples. You’ll want some basic refs to look back on.
3.)Think of the antagonist. It can be nature, machine, man, elderich horrors, etc....(typical story tropes are something like man vs. machine or man vs. nature). For our case lets say its mainly man and nature. Bandits, bad weather, illness, etc...DRAW SOME OF THOSE REFS. These beginning ones don’t have to be in depth. just basic stuff.
4.)Hash out what you want to happen in the BEGINNING, MIDDLE and END. These are kind of the most important parts. Its definitely important to think of the end ahead of time instead of thinking about it when you’re halfway through; thats a quick way to never end it at all. Our lumberjack begins his journey selling all he owns and getting a horse to set out to the mountains with nothing but a bit of gold, an old axe and a sick ride.  In the middle he encounters various trials that test his “pure of heart”-ness. Probably three, they can be as long as you want so long as they are generally even alongside each other. (3 or 7 are magic numbers WINK). In the end he reaches the temple and is welcomed inside due to his good deeds and it was allllll along a metaphor for the journey to the afterlife.
5.)get some good references. You have a time period set, a scene in mind, and some tools. Gathering from our example, we’re going to want; various forest scenes of pines, plains, dirt roads, medieval towns, mountains, temples, animals, people, cultures, etc. We need refs for our horse, axe, and gold. Remember those quick refs of characters you made in steps one and two? Now is the time to finalize those. They’ll have developed with the level of detail in your story. Add background nonsense no one else will notice but will enliven the story like how our axeman always ties his beard when mad or how he prefers apple cider over beer anyday. Give those fuckers some names. Bandit Bill challenges Axeman Abel for his horse and loses his head (literallly???)
--if you can go to like, museums or lectures or fairs about these things and take notes. USE YOUR RESOURCES!! ASK QUESTIONS!!! (For ilulatte I visited a couple of coffeeshops and roughed out some cafe drawings haha)
7.) Separate events into chapters. Generally theres a prologue, chapters 1-whatever, the end, and an epilogue. Our axeman has a prologue of starting out on the road, chapters 1-3 depicting pure-heart-trials, climax/end of reaching the temple, and an epilogue of someone else starting their journey to the temple based on his influence on the world because this shit is cyclical, baby.
6.) make a fuckton of thumbnail drafts. You know these characters now; you built em out of your own head. You know how they move and talk, so slap down their journey in tiny pages. add minor details to the sides. (Here’s a shitty example of mine from ilulatte!!!!!)
Tumblr media
7.) finish allllll of them. or at least the first few chapters. Its good for you I promise. You’ll notice the pacing much better this way! You can add a bunch of extra details in the margins like extra panels and bg notes. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the direction of your story, but try to keep the overall plot the same! (sticky notes are great for this!)
8.) start roughing out the actual pages. You’ll change things from the thumbnails (like I always do haha); thats okay!!! They’re more of a helpful guide than solid stone rules.  It’s like making the scaffolding to make the base for the rest of the building.
9.) do the lineart, bgs, text, etc. There’s tons of helpful art programs for this like CLIP studio paint or medibang if you’re doing it digitally. Remember those refs you collected for our horse, axe, and bgs? Now is the time to use em. BE VIGILANT. Keep copies of the originals. Go back frequently to look for mistakes or missing details. Keep a check list. Freckles? check. Scar on nose? check. shading???? UHHHHHH----SHIT.
10.)you should probably number the pages. keep em in a nice sized resolution if you want to print but lower it if you’re posting to the internet to dissuade reposters. keep em all in one organized folder if possible. Slap your signature on em for extra safety.
11.) ????? Sell it on gumroad idk.
GENERAL TIPS:
-start with short stories. Build your own stamina.
-have relatable characters with flaws. Tumblr seems to hate “problematic” characters but thats literally the point of character building and narratives. THEY’RE RELATABLE IF THEY’RE FLAWED. If a story doesn’t have characters that conflict with each other its a boring one. Axeman Abel wants to help everyone; Bandit Bill wants to help himself only. LET THEM HATE EACH OTHER.
-its also good to have characters that are friends but still conflict with each other. The Dragon Age series is phenomenal with this (their characters are good in general, take notes!!)
-theres a lot of shitty people out there. USE THEM. (seriously though examine other peoples interactions and you’ll make better characters. )
-bad things happen to good people. Bad things also happen to bad people. Bad things just sort of happen. Don’t shy away from unfortunate events; your story will fall flat without conflict both planned and random.
-Obviously you don’t have to share the same world views as your characters. (dont let the antis fool you.) Axeman Abel can hate broccoli but you can still enjoy it. Bandit Bill can be a racist piece of shit but that doesn’t mean you are.
-have characters of various personality, body type, race, height, etc….it really livens up the story.
-generally you don’t want the bg to overwhelm the characters, so most people do a sort of painterly bg against the solid outlines of the characters but thats all really up to you and how in-depth you want it to be.
-you should also make a regular schedule, if you can. Say, something like “twenty finished pages a month” or “four pages a week” depending on the level of detail. Simplistic style and palettes of course take less time to make than full color/heavily detailed pages, so plan accordingly to prevent burnout. If you post weekly, having a few pages done ahead of time will be good in case you need an emergency break.
-be open to critique but don’t be a doormat, either. ESPECIALLY if you’re doing it for free. People will try to take advantage of you; don’t let them. Block them and move on.
-above all; BE DEDICATED. Comics take a great deal of time by yourself, but doing them helps you develop important skills in the end like time management and general technical know-how like digital programs and writing. It’s not just art, though that’s a major part of it.
-probably should’ve said this earlier but make what you enjoy??? People can generally tell if you dont enjoy your own work. There’s less effort there.
THIS WAS REALLY LONG SO I HOPE IT WAS HELPFUL IN SOME WAY ILU HAVE FUN BE SAFE OUT THERE

Help me buy my fiance Dream Theater tickets?
So Dream Theater is coming to a town nearish to us which is a big deal. It's his favourite band, and they don't often come to our country let alone a town just 5 hours away.
Despite it being legit the best early-christmas gift I could get him it's just not in my current budget. I was going to see if I could sell off some journals and crystals on here to help, as well as commissions. The season of gift giving is coming up I thought I would try. Even if I can make $100 I can try and pick up shifts at work to see if I can get the rest in time.
Anyways, I can offer the following services, prices listed besides each. I take paypal (goods and services to protect you). All prices in Canadian Dollars.
CONTACT: [email protected] OR send me an ask OR send me a Message!
Spell Bottle Necklace - $15 CAD (includes shipping) 5 of 5 remaining.
Tumblr media
Spell Bottle Necklace, Chain can be added for $2. About 1.5in in diameter. Custom for each customer either tell me what you need it to do, or I can send a list of possible ingredients and you can pick 4-5 for me to put inside. LIMIT 5 (I only have 5 of these little empty baubles left)
---------------------------------
Custom Tarot Card Illustrations - $20 CAD
Tumblr media
1-2 characters You choose you card I will illustrate it based on the cards general meaning but if you want it to reflect something specific just ask Will do OCs, general mythology, animals or fanart.
---------------------------------
Pet Portraits - $65 CAD
Tumblr media
$65 for a single pet, $85 for two Full body reference will need to be supplied, multiple angles and face close ups if possible. If limited refs are available I will just check in often while painting to make sure everything is good. I will supply the high res file so you can have it printed. Will be done and emailed to you well before Christmas to allow you to print/frame it in time if you intednd it for a gift.  You can choose the size to make it as print friendly as possible. I recommend 8x10 or 11x14 for north americans those are the easiest to frame and most cost effective to print.
---------------------------------
Any purchase is SUPER APPRECIATED!!! If I can make my main goal of $300 (will cover our tickets, transportation and hopefully a t-shirt for the fiance) I will literally sob. I want to do this so badly for him. He is my rock, he has changed so much and educated himself so much to help me with my mental illnesses. I want to repay him back bit by bit and this is a good start.
I will send love and positivity to the inbox of literally anyone who helps share this around!

Book Suggestion List: Meeting 2
A Manual For Cleaning Women - Lucia Berlin
A collection of her short stories. It's 432 pages - it’s suggested that we would read half of it if selected
Available on bookdepository.com €7,08  or in Dubray Books
Book Depository Description
The stories in A Manual for Cleaning Women make for one of the most remarkable unsung collections in twentieth-century American fiction. With extraordinary honesty and magnetism, Lucia Berlin invites us into her rich, itinerant life: the drink and the mess and the pain and the beauty and the moments of surprise and of grace. Her voice is uniquely witty, anarchic and compassionate. Celebrated for many years by those in the know, she is about to become - a decade after her death - the writer everyone is talking about. The collection will be introduced by Lydia Davis.'With Lucia Berlin we are very far away from the parlours of Boston and New York and quite far away, too, from the fiction of manners, unless we are speaking of very bad manners .

"All pain is real could be Berlin’s mantra, the motto of this collection. It’s no accident that one of her alter egos is named Dolores. The narrator is sometimes a cleaning woman (as in the title story) or an emergency-room nurse, two jobs that require constant contact with the messier aspects of being human: blood, vomit, colostomy bags, hemorrhoids. The agonizing moments relived here are often rooted in the physical. The time her grandfather, a dentist, took her into his office and told her to pull out all his teeth: “The sound was the sound of roots being ripped out, like trees being torn from winter ground.” The trip across the Mexican border to an abortion clinic, where she couldn’t go through with it but watched another girl hemorrhage on the hallway floor. Her arrest in middle age with her teenage boyfriend: After he is beaten by a policeman, she licks clean his eyes, fused shut with blood. “The best thing that could happen to you would be for you to be uncomfortable once in a while,” a teenage narrator, during a rare moment of privilege, is told by her teacher. In the context of this collection, it sounds like a bitter joke."  RUTH FRANKLIN
The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson
Blurb: Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts is a genre-bending memoir, a work of "autotheory" offering fresh, fierce, and timely thinking about desire, identity, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. At its center is a romance: the story of the author's relationship with the artist Harry Dodge. This story, which includes Nelson's account of falling in love with Dodge, who is fluidly gendered, as well as her journey to and through a pregnancy, offers a firsthand account of the complexities and joys of (queer) family-making.
Writing in the spirit of public intellectuals such as Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes, Nelson binds her personal experience to a rigorous exploration of what iconic theorists have said about sexuality, gender, and the vexed institutions of marriage and child-rearing. Nelson's insistence on radical individual freedom and the value of caretaking becomes the rallying cry of this thoughtful, unabashed, uncompromising book.

SCUM Manifesto - Valerie Solanas
A radical feminist manifesto published in 1967. It argues that men have ruined the world, and that it is up to women to fix it. To achieve this goal, it suggests the formation of SCUM, an organization dedicated to overthrowing society and eliminating the male sex. The Manifesto is widely regarded as satirical, but based on legitimate philosophical and social concerns.

David Eagleman 'Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives'
At once funny, wistful and unsettling, Sum is a dazzling exploration of unexpected afterlives—each presented as a vignette that offers a stunning lens through which to see ourselves in the here and now. In one afterlife, you may find that God is the size of a microbe and unaware of your existence. In another version, you work as a background character in other people’s dreams. Or you may find that God is a married couple, or that the universe is running backward, or that you are forced to live out your afterlife with annoying versions of who you could have been. With a probing imagination and deep understanding of the human condition, acclaimed neuroscientist David Eagleman offers wonderfully imagined tales that shine a brilliant light on the here and now

Chris Krauss - Aliens and Anorexia
First published in 2000, Chris Kraus’s second novel, Aliens & Anorexia, defined a female form of chance that is both emotional and radical. Unfolding like a set of Chinese boxes, with storytelling and philosophy informing each other, the novel weaves together the lives of earnest visionaries and failed artists. Its characters include Simone Weil, the first radical philosopher of sadness; the artist Paul Thek; Kraus herself; and “Africa,” Kraus’s virtual S&M partner, who is shooting a big-budget Hollywood film in Namibia while Kraus holes up in the Northwest woods to chronicle the failure of Gravity & Grace, her own low-budget independent film.
In Aliens & Anorexia, Kraus makes a case for empathy as the ultimate perceptive tool, and reclaims anorexia from the psychoanalytic girl-ghetto of poor “self-esteem.” Anorexia, Kraus writes, could be an attempt to leave the body altogether: a rejection of the cynicism that this culture hands us through its food.

Sarah Baume - A Line Made by Walking
Struggling to cope with urban life-and life in general-Frankie, a twenty-something artist, retreats to her family's rural house on "turbine hill," vacant since her grandmother's death three years earlier. It is in this space, surrounded by countryside and wild creatures, that she can finally grapple with the chain of events that led her here-her shaky mental health, her difficult time in art school-and maybe, just maybe, regain her footing in art and life. As Frankie picks up photography once more, closely examining the natural world around her, she reconsiders seminal works of art and their relevance.
With "prose that makes sure we look and listen," Sara Baume has written an elegant novel that is as much an exploration of wildness, the art world, mental illness, and community as it is a profoundly beautiful and powerful meditation on life.

Artful by Ali Smith
Blurb (copied from Goodreads):
In February 2012, the novelist Ali Smith delivered the Weidenfeld lectures on European comparative literature at St. Anne’s College, Oxford. Her lectures took the shape of this set of discursive stories. Refusing to be tied down to either fiction or the essay form, Artful is narrated by a character who is haunted—literally—by a former lover, the writer of a series of lectures about art and literature.
A hypnotic dialogue unfolds, a duet between and a meditation on art and storytelling, a book about love, grief, memory, and revitalization. Smith’s heady powers as a fiction writer harmonize with her keen perceptions as a reader and critic to form a living thing that reminds us that life and art are never separate.
Artful is a book about the things art can do, the things art is full of, and the quicksilver nature of all artfulness. It glances off artists and writers from Michelangelo through Dickens, then all the way past postmodernity, exploring every form, from ancient cave painting to 1960s cinema musicals. This kaleidoscope opens up new, inventive, elastic insights—on the relation of aesthetic form to the human mind, the ways we build our minds from stories, the bridges art builds between us. Artful is a celebration of literature’s worth in and to the world and a meaningful contribution to that worth in itself.

How Forests Think Toward an Anthropology Beyond the Human - Eduardo Kohn
Can forests think? Do dogs dream? In this astonishing book, Eduardo Kohn challenges the very foundations of anthropology, calling into question our central assumptions about what it means to be human—and thus distinct from all other life forms. Based on four years of fieldwork among the Runa of Ecuador’s Upper Amazon, Eduardo Kohn draws on his rich ethnography to explore how Amazonians interact with the many creatures that inhabit one of the world’s most complex ecosystems. Whether or not we recognize it, our anthropological tools hinge on those capacities that make us distinctly human. However, when we turn our ethnographic attention to how we relate to other kinds of beings, these tools (which have the effect of divorcing us from the rest of the world) break down. How Forests Think seizes on this breakdown as an opportunity. Avoiding reductionistic solutions, and without losing sight of how our lives and those of others are caught up in the moral webs we humans spin, this book skillfully fashions new kinds of conceptual tools from the strange and unexpected properties of the living world itself. In this groundbreaking work, Kohn takes anthropology in a new and exciting direction–one that offers a more capacious way to think about the world we share with other kinds of beings.
