I'll honest, the details of how the Marks work aren't something I'm incredibly confident on. I do think you're right that they haven't been explained as much as they could be. Especially not Luna's Marks and the transfer of power they allow, since Vanitas is purposely cagey about that. That said, I do think I have an explanation for this issue:

I don't believe Jeanne's Mark is meant to have given Vanitas any power in the way that you mean.

In the panel you've included, when it says vampires "embed a portion of their power in someone else," it doesn't mean the Marked victim can use the power of the vampire that Marked them. Look at the panel right before the one you included:

Leaving a Mark is claiming a person as your prey. Giving extra power to someone you intend to drink would be extremely counter-productive for vampires. Can you imagine if Astolfo had inherited powers from all twenty-something of the vampires that Marked him? That would be a terrible strategy for a predator.

Rather, it's called a Mark of Possession for a reason. Like the above quote says, they're in large part a statement aimed at other vampires. A Marked human is a human that has been claimed as a vampire's personal possession, and the Mark serves as a keep out sign for others. The vampire that Marks a human imbues that Mark with some of their power so that other vampires who see it will say "oh shit, this human has been claimed by someone powerful. We shouldn't take what's theirs because we don't want to fuck with them."

The confusing factor in this, of course, is that Vanitas has inherited power from Luna, and that inheritance seems to be tied to his Mark. However, in addition to the usual process of Marking, Luna has also made Vanitas their kin.

We've yet to get a specific explanation of what being made someone's kin actually means (thanks again to Vanitas's caginess about Luna). However, seeing as this phrase has only ever come up in relation to Luna, Vanitas, and Misha, it has to mean something beyond the usual process of leaving a Mark.

So tldr, Vanitas does get a portion of Luna's power through the Mark they left on him, but that seems to be only because they also made him their kin. When a human is Marked in the normal, non-kin way (like what Jeanne does to Vanitas), there's no transfer of power. A portion of the vampire's power is left in the Mark itself to serve as a signal to other vampires, but that does nothing to enhance or power up the human themselves.

Most of the time, the Marks are just extremely fancy magic cattle brands.

Ok so, @destielification asked about my Simon Amstell joke, and I'm not going to hijack poor @centurieslove's post but...

(Sorry, this isn't Merlin-related but it's tangentially about Colin Morgan, so it is at least Merlin-adjacent.)

Simon Amstell, if you didn't know, is a British stand-up comedian and certified weird little man.

I'm not, like, a Simon Amstell fan or anything, but I do like stand-up comedy. And I became aware of Simon Amstell some years ago after watching one stand-up show of his on YouTube, which is Do Nothing, which is still available, in fact, and you should definitely watch if you haven't because it's pretty good.

Now Simon's openly gay, and in Do Nothing he talks a lot about his romantic life, or lack thereof, and he jokes a lot about the type of men he finds attractive, who he describes as "ill-thin", "timid" and "vulnerable".

And one of the funniest bits in the show is one where he recounts an extremely awkward encounter with one such man — an actor Simon had "fallen in love with", despite never having talked to him.

So Simon went to see a play starring this actor in the hope of meeting him afterwards and maybe talking to him a bit, which didn't happen.

What did happen, though, is that a few weeks later Simon randomly bumped into the very same actor, love of his life, in a shop. And he decides there and then that it's destiny, and he must shoot his shot. (You can skip the quote below if you intend to watch the show, but I'm pasting it here because it's hilarious).

I saw him there, he hadn't seen me. He was about a metre away from me. There, that thin. And what I thought... Anyway, Simon talks to Ben, gives him his email address with some excuse or another. Ben promises to email him. And then, he doesn’t. Cue sad noises from the audience.

And that could have been the end of it, except that Simon, certified weird man, decided to be weird about it. And instead of letting it go, he elaborates his trauma by incorporating it into his writing.

A Colin Morgan who, I might say, has something of a young Ben Whishaw about him. And he doesn't play a pretentious actor this time — in fact he plays a version of Simon Amstell himself — but the fact remains that he's exactly Simon Amstell's type, kind of looks like the man Simon was admittedly obsessed with, and even bears his name. And Simon cast him in his film to play himself, which is weird but also funny and very on brand for him, because he's self-obsessed like that.

And I was broke. And living with a parent who denied I was mentally ill in the first place, and HIS solution to my disability was to LITERALLY put me back into the cage that caused the brunt of it. He said, and I quote, "Sometimes it only feels like you progress when your back is up against the wall."

And I fucking hate that he was right. The last time I showed any prerogative towards my self survival and progress as a human being was when I had come to ask to live with him in highschool, back when I lived with my mother, and it was like -- something about seeing her flub the act of parenting or caring or being a real person so hard enraged me to the point of taking care of both me and my sibling and then eventually myself. It made me start looking for options to survive and carve a path out for myself. And then he essentially exiled me here, to live with her again, and when I called him and asked for help, he said that; and said Money is Freedom. it was fucking heights of covid lockdown then of course so that wasn't going to happen for another year. But the year after that everything changed rapidly. One by one I started being an adult who put his life together and was able to get his shit together tangibly enough that I could (...most of the time) afford an apartment, a car, utilities, a phone, etc... this was not the kind of person that the person running shitpostsaber could've imagined.

Finally actually watched the Chocolate Factory film (original). I read the book years back and remember very little of the Depp film I watched when... elevenish maybe?

I had low hopes going in, at least it cleared the musical's "actually killing them on stage" bar?

First off, this feels like some kind of twisted horror world where everyone is obsessed with chocolate. Kids' film, yes, but I had absolutely no investment in the stakes. And I love good sweets as much as anyone.

Charlie comes from a comically exaggerated background, but it's just a backdrop to make the contest more important to him or something. Again, he's a kid, but how is chocolate the most important thing to him? A lifetime supply of it would be a pleasant way to keep spirits up, but wouldn't solve any long-term problem.

And here we see some very sweet little kids who... Well, only one of them really has any kind of vice. Gene Wilder's charisma is disarming here, but I must remember that this is a tenor and therefore capable of anything (opera joke, for my non-opera followers). He still smiles placidly and quotes as children are hurt, so I have no sympathy even if his acting was the best part.

Something to Share: Did you know that Mondstadt alone has over three hundred species of birds? Around the city area, you mostly see pigeons and falcons, but the diversity in places with less human activity is much bigger. On Historical Fiction, the Modernization of Historical People and Events, and how we Interact With It.

Let me first preface this by saying I love Six and it’s my current hyper-fixation, and I am also currently working on a piece of historical fiction where Katherine Howard time travels to the modern world. This rambling isn’t meant to hate on anyone it’s just me discussing stuff. However, recently I saw one of the Six actresses post a Tiktok where they said, “K Howard would’ve been a Gleek” and it honestly made me uncomfortable.

I’m not saying they were wrong for this. I understand that they are playing Katherine Howard as a character and as an actor you naturally look for things to help you portray and relate to the character. I also understand that Six takes place in a modern realm and Glee is a modern media. And I honestly really like modern takes on history! I think it helps make actual history more palatable to a modern audience. But, it goes make me a little uncomfortable because the line between fiction and reality gets blurred, and that’s hard to navigate as both an audience member and creator.

The thing is yes, if Katherine Howard were a modern teenager/young adult she very well might have liked Glee. Actual Katherine was known for her fun, bright personality and being quite fond of music and dancing. But the key word here is might. What bothers me is the lack of this word, the straight up assumption. We don’t and will never know if Katherine was a Gleek because she A, wasn’t around for it and B, is dead. And I know this actress was probably just referring to the character of Katherine in Six, but that bothers me because Katherine isn’t just a character! She’s an actual human being who was murdered! She died at no older than nineteen! (I know some sources say twenty-one but it’s more accurately seventeen to nineteen). She was a child who’s life and legacy were cut short, swept under the rug (her remains were destroyed,) and then slandered for a good 500 years! I think she deserves a little more respect than to be treated as a mere character in a musical!

I understand that as a writer and an actor this is hard to balance with the material you are presenting. Regarding my aforementioned story, I am actually really struggling with a plot line of Katherine turning to modern music and dance to process the reality of what she went through because, as I said, I don’t know what modern music Katherine would like, and I never will. Because she will never get to experience it. I’m not comfortable making these kinds of assumptions. And you can say, “L just remember that you are a writing a character of Katherine—” Yes I know but I am someone who likes things to be as accurate as possible. I don’t like making characterizations of real people, and I especially don’t like making one of Katherine, because people having been characterizing her for years, and they weren’t nice about it, either.

That being said, I don’t hate Six’s characterization of Katherine. I understand they were modernizing her and I honestly think they do a really good job of blending that and the actual Katherine together. I hate how this leads to (a lot of) people believing the character of Katherine and the actual Katherine are one in the same. I hate how this is a problem for all the queens (Esp Anne Boleyn). It also makes me uncomfortable when I see Six fanfics and AUs and incorrect quotes because these aren’t characters you’re talking about, they’re real people. (Note, I don’t inherently hate all Six fanfics, the premise just makes me uncomfortable. I actually read a really good one that I think explored the contrast between the reality of Katherine’s life and a modern lens on it really well. And when I say “reality” I don’t mean “IRL Kat was a slut” bc that is absolutely NOT true she was a VICTIM no matter WHAT the year is but I mean the way she and the other Queens would’ve seen it vs how we do). They deserve to be more than characters. Katherine deserves to be more than a character.

Again, I don’t think this actress had any ill will when she made the Tiktok. I think she just wanted to make a fun little video. I also do not think she is necessarily wrong. Again, I understand she is playing a character, and she was probably thinking about the character when she made the Tiktok. But it did bother me.

Katherine Howard isn’t your little blorbo to make headcanons about. She’s a teenager who was sexually abused her whole life and then was murdered for it.

And I really wish more people would remember that.

P.S: I also want to make it perfectly clear that I have zero problems with any of the actresses playing the queens. I’m not one of those “but _ wouldn’t have been poc1!1!” people. I think Six is incredible in terms of diverse casting, and POC Katherine would actually be AMAZING. (And give AYWD SO much more weight. Also yes I’ve hear Holli and she slayed). This post is about the blurred line between (fictional) characterization and reality.

  Hello new followers! You've been trickling in steadily over the last year & a half, so I figured it was time for a basic summary of the blog and some housekeeping notes. (Last updated 2/14/24)

  I have 3 mental illnesses and more chronic physical illnesses than I feel like counting, so I use the appropriate awareness months as a MAJOR opportunity to share loads of info & memes on those months' subjects. Obviously I'll also share stuff about my physical illnesses and chronic illness in general whenever else I feel like it. From time to time I post info about mental illnesses I don't actually have, but I'm much more likely to post loads of content about the ones I do have.

  I'm bisexual and strongly pro-LGBT rights, so I tend to share a lot on LGBT-related topics as they cross my radar. I will particularly go all-out on LGBT-related content during Pride Month. I'm also a liberal feminist woman who wishes health classes and sex ed were better, so you'll see lots of pro-choice stuff, general feminist stuff, and general female & reproductive health stuff on my blog. (Pronouns she/her if that wasn't clear.) I will sometimes post about other US political issues, but they're not really my focus.

  As is probably blindingly obvious, I'm a religious Jew who supports Israel. NO, I most definitely DON'T blindly agree with all dominant Israeli politicians and policies or all Religious Zionist opinions; I'm appalled at the current political situation there. Please don't strawman me. I post a bunch about anti-Israel hate & media bias, occasionally some more upbeat stuff about Israel (political or otherwise), and some Jewish/Israeli history stuff. Leaning into the Judaism, if there is a holiday coming up I will spam you with stuff about it for days. I often share human interest pieces on Jewish celebrities or the intersection of Jewish culture and something else, stuff about the Holocaust and general antisemitism, and sometimes other things related to Jewish theology or culture. I will also sometimes discuss the intersections of Judaism and my blog's other themes. I do not post about internal Jewish community problems that just plain make us look bad, so while I have Strong Opinions about Jewish sex offender scandals & such that I will discuss in the appropriate spaces, I'm keeping those discussions off Tumblr cuz I don't need to give random antisemites any more fodder.

  Other miscellany: I like to regularly share quotes that are motivational/inspirational without veering into toxic positivity, as well as quotes that I find just plain cool. I will sometimes share quotes from people with problematic worldviews or histories because I firmly believe that almost everyone can teach us something. I also reblog a heck of a lot of positive affirmations & reminders. Because of past & present social experiences, I love social/relationship skills content and some other relationship-related posts. jesus christ i just saw your latest jjk post and i am devastated <33 i feel like the alpha bursting into manic laughter rather than bursting into tears is a much more powerful imagery imo. Combined with your nightmare explanation, the combination of the alpha feeling bitter about the whole thing and then in the latest thing you posted, mentioned cliffs and why sorcerers dying young gives off such a raw feeling of hopelessness, despair and bitterness. The scene where the alpha starts laughing manically was giving when gojo confronted toji after toji thought he died. And that desperate moment where the alpha wants gojo to tell him if there was any hope left at all. I like that moment because its like the alpha wishing desperately for some assurance that things would be okay in the end even when its clearly looking that it wont. I wouldn't be surprised if the alpha starts slowly descending into madness like geto bc when the alpha got his bondmark removed, i got the vibe of the resentment starting to boil over. resentment towards whom? i dont think its all necessarily directed at gojo but rather at the situation. and the moment gojo steps out of that box, id imagine that his mate wasnt the same person he remembered, especially recalling the last lines in your nightmare post:

I'm really glad that what I was trying to put off came through. You're absolutely right that this alpha has spent a lot of time telling themselves that somehow "things are okay". They are starting to teeter over into that place that Geto ended up - where all of your sacrifices, all your pain, once meant something and now it doesn't mean anything. Sorcerer's aren't supposed to have "ideals" or lofty principles which they fight for.

If you've seen the "sorcerer rules" that gege wrote, it mostly boils down to: fight curses, don't tell normal humans that you're doing it, and listen to the jujutsu elders. We've seen before how the ones who do find a less selfish goal end up dying in ways that are terrible, often some way avoidable, and also directly related to their goal (the jujutsu code does not ask for lethal self sacrifice or suicide, but based on cultural context, would not be considered dishonorable. ie nanami could have turned around and gone for healing/help but he didn't and saved the students by sacrificing himself).

This oc has a lot more empathy than Satoru or Suguru - they can see why people make bad decisions, understand and even forgive them for it. They have the maturity to deal with people regardless if a bad decision is going to threaten the lives of the people they love or are obligated to protect. But apart from being more emotionally tuned in, they are very much like Suguru - including the part where they keep their silence until it just becomes too much, it doesn't mean anything anymore.

There are a lot of aspects of their relationship with Gojo that are just not tenable. They give him a lot of leeway because their relationship is built on contract, and because they do understand him somewhat. There are things they can't talk about, can't deal with, even though they have deep affection for one another, because of their job. And you're right, that's not Gojo's fault, but it also kind of is. The alpha doesn't want to pressure or rely on him like the rest of the world, but if you can't rely or lean on the other person in the relationship, then even if there's mutual understanding and even love, what does that mean when one of the people is left alone? The alpha may feel like they weren't relying on Gojo, but the truth is even his presence is stabilizing - in a mated pair, that bond is there even when you can't feel the other half and now it's gone. The alpha would love some honest reassurance or at least someone to tell them which way the world is going to tilt, because you're right they know they can survive without Gojo, but without the kids (and loving your kids is a very different relationship than loving your spouse) they don't know which way the world is tilting. I also never though gege would kill Tsumiki, but that's another raw wound there because she was never supposed to be involved in any of this. The panels imply that Gojo and Megumi canonically kept this from her and if she were herself she'd be mad about it (which I sort of break because alpha has a less obvious technique and has done things for Tsumiki before that technically show their powers).

To quote you: "Sorcerers dying young gives off such a raw feeling of hopelessness, despair and bitterness" precisely. I don't think anyone can look at a situation where children and teenagers and young adults experience more trauma and grief than most people encounter in their entire lifetimes and are not bitter that the people they love who experience this don't get to experience an equal amount of joy or love or appreciation or happiness before they perish.

This OC has a lot of tolerance. Their technique (like how most techniques relate to theme and personality) is partially centered around that. How much can you take before you break? For this oc, the answer is a lot more than most. I haven't written this part yet but they were injured in the Toji fight as well. They just weren't broken by it they way Gojo and Getou were. Riko's death hurt, sure, but they had failed before and knew what the sorcerer system did to show you that failure was possible way more intimately than the other two did. In this way, the OC and Shoko mirror one another.

This is the arm breaking moment, this is the week they start to crack, and the way their technique works is either they break or something else has to, because all that pain and pummeling has to go somewhere.

The fun part about this OC is they're Gojo's age-ish, so I get to do something shonen anime doesn't often get to, and show that adults still have growth and power-ups! If negative feelings are related to cursed energy etc and unlocking your own mental blocks in order to use it, well... depending on how things go in the manga there's some potential directions for oc to get some payback.
