I recently got into X-Men comics via the Krakoa era. Ive been really liking the New Mutants and want to try their original series. Is it a good idea to jump straight into that run, or is it a better idea to read some of the Claremont X-Men run for context first?

The correct jumping-on point for the New Mutants is Marvel Graphic Novel #4, The New Mutants, which is a great 50-page introduction to the premise (Professor X recruits a new class of students to the Xavier School) and the cast of characters (Rahne Sinclair, Roberto da Costa, Sam Guthrie, Dani Moonstar, and Xuân Cao Mạnh - future main characters like Doug Ramsey and Ilyana Rasputina will be introduced later) and their backstories.

From there, you can jump straight into the first issue of the ongoing title by Chris Claremont and then later Louise Simonson. Really, the only thing you need to know about the X-Men for context is that Professor X and Moira MacTaggart are the good guys and the Hellfire Club are the bad guys.

One of the great things about the X-line during the Claremont run is that a combination of the unprecedented level of editorial and creative coordination and Jim Shooter's diktat that "every issue is someone's first" is that they're very good at doing economical world-building. Thus, when you need to learn who Sebastian Shaw or Emma Frost or Henry Peter Gyrich are and how the X-Men relate to the New Mutants, the books will tell you everything you need to know quite succinctly.

“Are you going to need more time to consider your options?”

“Yes, we will.”  With that, Belasco disappeared in a cloud of smoke, reminiscent of Kurt’s own teleportation abilities.

“Twixt the Devil and the deep blue sea we are.  Is there really no other way to get this Unraveling?”  Wisdom pulled out a cigarette and used his hot knives to light it.

Yana shook her head.  “Trying to steal from the Queen Mothers would be as bad as trying to steal from Belasco.  We could go back and try to bargain with the wizard, but we don’t know what we could offer him either.”

“The way I see it,” said Brian.  “Is we’re either screwed now or we’re screwed later.  We give Belasco that Bloodstone, it probably won’t take him that long to create the final one.  Maybe even within the year.  But a favor, I’m thinking he’ll hold on to it for quite a while.”

“I disagree,” Kurt interjected.  “We don’t know how long it took Belasco to create the first two Bloodstones, but we do know there was a large gap in time between making the second and the third.  And it’s been a few years since he created the one from your soul, Yana.  He could turn a favor back on us fairly quickly, but if we give him a Bloodstone, we’ve probably got a few years to stop him from making the final one.  Or, worse comes to worst, we could steal it back.”

Wisdom turned to Yana.  “Can we put restrictions on the favor?  What I’m concerned about is if we give him a favor, he’ll make us give him the Soul Sword or create the Bloodstone anyway.”

She nodded.  “We could do that.  Trade him for a favor but state that giving him the Soul Sword or creating a Bloodstone are specifically excluded.”

Pete’s fag went out and he didn’t bother to relight it.  “Then giving him a favor gets my vote.  So that’s two for the favor and one for the Bloodstone.  Magik, I guess it’s your call.”

Yana bowed her head in thought and Kurt held his breath.  “Then it’s three to one.  Belasco gets a favor, but not the Soul Sword or a Bloodstone.”

The demon reappeared, having clearly been spying on them.  “The Unravelling in exchange for future favors from four different members of Excalibur, not including a Bloodstone or the Soul Sword.  Done and done.”  From thin air, he conjured up what looked like a tangled mesh of dark grey yarn.

“No fiery parchment?  No signing in our blood?” japed Wisdom as he took the enchantment form the demon.

“No need,” a thin smile appeared on that red face.  “I have other methods of enforcing my contracts.”

Excalibur repressed a communal shiver as they stepped away and Yana opened up a portal to take them out of Limbo.

The evil sorceress desires Kitty Pryde´s purest soul -something that is becoming a trend among evil sorceress. In fact, the lady was so obsessed by the desire of  ''possess'' Kitty Pryde that prompts Excalibur and Kitty herself to think that maybe, just maybe, the sorceress wants something extra than just her purest soul.

For some unknown reason, Ray and Kurt are not ok with this random woman lusting after Kitty´s soul. Again, just maybe, said sorceress is not only lusting for Kitty´s soul.

"Is there a way to reverse this?" Brian asked as Magik is searching answers in her book. You see, the sorceress was really into Kitty and well, crazy evil sorceress don´t accept rejection well and Kitty is under a curse where she will remain dead for one year.

Magik shakes her head. "No, I´m afraid Katya will have to endure being dead for one year, the best I can do is to make sure her body remains healthy as her mind will do a long journey"

"This seems like a Sleeping Beauty´s story. If someone kissed her will she waken?" Meggan asked in a desperate tone.

Again, Magik shakes her head.

Rachel Grey is not pleased by this.

Kurt Wagner is the same.

Lockheed is crying fat tears and refuses to leave Kitty´s body.

And Excalibur has to deal with one ''dead'' Kitty for a year. Is a macabre as it sounds.

One year later.

Kitty opens her eyes and the first thing she does is to check her breath. "Oh, not morning breath, good" and then notices a sleeping elf, a grumpy and sleepy Ray, Lockheed curling like a ball on her chest and one Yana and her many books near Kitty´s bed.

X-Men as Leverage

I can give you some of my thoughts on that - although obviously if you want to do a Leverage AU, you can do whatever you want, there can be multiple options, none is worse than the other. My ideas with some explanations for those who haven’t watched Leverage (no spoilers, only the premise) are under the cut!

quick explanation for those unfamiliar with Leverage: it’s a TV Show about a team of criminals that con bad rich people in order to bring justice to poor people/return their money. the team has five characters with five different criminal occupations: a grifter, a hitter, a hacker, a thief and a mastermind (not really a criminal occupation, but the guy that plans stuff and holds the team together). (if some of these words are new to you, I advise you to google them - I know that I had to google them when I started getting into the show, nothing bad about it, we all have a different vocabulary range).

so our task here is to pick some X-Men characters for the roles. iwillshipyouman suggested: Charles as the mastermind, Erik as the grifter or as the grifter and the hitter at the same time. +possibly Raven as the grifter/the thief and Hank as the hacker. now come my ideas.

I have to say that my experience with the Leverage AU for another fandom (BBC Musketeers 2014-16) and specifically some awesome people from the corresponding discord server have taught me that it’s more fun to choose some not extremely obvious roles for characters because this lets more of their sides shine. I also have a personal preference for Cherik to have a first meeting after the start of the story so here’s my random list of characters with justifications. I give everyone they/them pronouns ‘cause I dunno what pronouns they’ll have in the story.

Dear anyone who stumbles upon this post, feel free to use my ideas, but please send me the link so that I could read it and tell everyone about it :) If you want to brainstorm this together, do reach out via asks/notes/DMs/whatnot.

Erik - the mastermind. They have their metal powers to defend themselves but that’s not their main thing. Angel - the grifter. They also have their powers to defend themselves. Raven - the hitter (that’s basically canon, see: beginning of DOFP, for example). Aaaand, totally random: I wanted to have Kitty on the team and with Kitty comes Ilyana, so, Kitty as the hacker and Ilyana as the thief? Maybe?

You can notice that Charles is not on the team. Well, the idea in my head is sth like Charles is Raven’s sibling and the team accidentally stumbles upon them during a job. Raven’s main line is “Stop flirting with our team leader”, and Erik will be crushing like Erik because, well, I love that trope. Will there be Raven/Kitty? Kitty/Ilyana? Raven/Angel? Very possible. Polycules are our everything.

I might write this at some point but I give zero promises, a promise-free zone

WAS YOUR CHARACTER “BLIPPED” OUT?  WHO IMPORTANT TO THEM WAS BLIPPED OUT, AND WHAT HAS IT FELT LIKE AFTER THOSE FIVE YEARS HAVE PASSED?

illyana  wasn’t  blipped  --  but  you’d  be  forgiven  for  mistaking  as  such,   when  the  blip  happened  illyana  was  in  limbo   /   and  although  the  dimension  exists  outside  of  time,  the  sudden  change  in  the  universe  fractured  it’s  reality  .   for  two  years  illyana  was  stuck  in  this  hell  again  as  she  worked  to  restore  order  and  prevent  demonic  uprisings.  mentally,  this  had  little  impact  on  her  just  because  well ... she’s  used  to  it  /   but  physically,  the  extended  period  of  time  in  the  dimension  and  absorbing  it  into  herself  caused  her  to  become  more  demonic   /  unable  to  balance  herself  between  illyana  and  darkchylde,   she  was  too afraid  of  rejection  to  show  herself  to  the  surviving  x-men  and  instead  chose  to  pretend  that  she  had  also  been  snapped  whilst  she  trained  her  magical  abilities.   after  the  blip  was  reversed,  she  realised  she  could  not  keep  hiding,  and  thus pretended  to  come  back  to  this  reality.    she  is  still,  clearly  5  years  older  than  when  she  “ blipped “  but --  it’s  illyana,  her  age  is fickle,  so  she  hopes  not  too many  people  will  question  it. 

          WHERE ARE THEY LIVING? ARE THEY LIVING WITH ANYONE?

illyana  lives  at  the  x-mansion  again.   she’s  just  vibing  with  the  x-men,  but  is  not  unknown  to  teleport  into  her  friends  places  when  she’s  hungry  and  wants  to  steal  their  bagels.  

         WHY IS YOUR CHARACTER AFFILIATED WITH WHO THEY’RE AFFILIATED WITH?

x-men  and  mutant  rights  only.  loosely tangentially  affiliated  with  other  magical  groups,  but  they  will always  come  second  to  mutant  rights.

        WHO ARE THEIR MAJOR FRIENDS, ALLIES, AND FOES?

the x-men and she stole her brothers fiance friends !!    of  course,  new  mutants  are  also  up  here  they  are  THE  gang  of  dumbass misfits.   allies  include,  all x-men  and  mutant  supportive  characters -- does  not  care  if ur  a terrorist babes  we  all can’t  be  perfect  and  sometimes  murder IS okay !!  in terms  of  enemies,  standard  x-men  enemies +  specifically belasco  can  go  fuck  himself  for  stealing  illyana’s  childhood.

       WHOSE HANDS DO THEY BELIEVE THE COUNTRY SHOULD BE IN?

give  her  an  option  that  actually  cares  for  mutant  rights,  and  then  maybe  she’ll consider  it. 

      WHAT’S THEIR CURRENT MENTAL STATE AT? THEIR PHYSICAL STATE?

not good  besties !!!  mentally  and  physically  she  could  be  better,  always  having  to  balance  demonic  forces  in  her  mind  --  she  still is ,  at  her  core,  a  good  person  but  that  is  so  often  overshadowed  by  the  cold  armor  she  wears  to  protect  herself  from  unpacked  childhood trauma.   in  terms  of  physical  state,  she’s  in  peak  condition  outside  of  unforseen  and uncontrollable  shifts  into  being  a literal  half  demon  goat  lady  with  horns  and  a tail  -- but  being  sexy  and  evil outstanding,  it’s  all good !!
