i made myself a little trigun sona and commissioned my best friend rae @zipsunz for art of her and her birdy sidekick… her name is josephine “jo” luu and i picture her living in a little geo dome/animal sanctuary and taking in orphans/vagabonds. she has a little crew of people and birds who she adores (and adore her) and she lives her best life for the most part.
i like to think about her meeting vw when they’re in Dire Straits and she takes them in and lets them rest up, only for trouble to fall upon the geo dome and for vw to return the favour by protecting her home. i’ll write a little oneshot for it one day but i’m nowhere near brave enough yet to post it :’)

people always ask me if im going to do something with my art money-wise and it's like... not every hobby artist is destined to make money off it.
it's a huge task to get noticed online, let alone make money. it's like having another job. you have to promote and push yourself and your image. it's like running a business. and there is no way in hell i'm ever going to do that. im tired enough from working full time already. and even when i take time off... i still dont feel like i have enough time to sit down, relax, and work on my art.
and sometimes... people just want to do art as a hobby. not everyone wants to make money off it. and that's okay.

Im going around asking my favorite mech artists "how to get better at drawing mechs", so now i'm coming to you! What is your approach to drawing mechs, what was your path into learning how to draw em? And how could someone get better at drawing mechs? Thank you for your time and attention
Hello ! ^^
For me, I started drawing mechs 4 years ago. I was just starting to draw again after my big depression era (like 4-5 years without drawing anything after artschool) =w= I kinda had to start from scratch. So, to help me, I started drawabox.com .
I did the first lesson, pulling lines and drawing straight, which helped me a lot gaining confidence in my hand. I ended up drawing 250 boxes . It took me something like a month and a half, doing 10 boxes in day, not everyday, but most of the week.
Tumblr media
This was important, especially with mechas, because it teaches you to draw in 3d, to give volume to your shape, and because most mechanical stuff is pretty much boxes piled on top of each others, it's pretty geometric.
At that point, I was already dusting myself of the rust in my drawing muscles, but what really finished it is doing the March of Robots 2020.
Tumblr media
I did like 25 mechs in almost as many days, until I started getting comms. And since then, I haven't stopped. ^^
(also a year later, I got a dm from Tom/Abaddon and got hired to do mechs for LancerRPG x)
Of course, between all that, I did sketches, studies. I tried doing 100 hands but didn't finish it. etc
But for mecha, specifically, I think one of the first things you have to understand is that it is a language of symbols, that is different from organic forms. This obvious difference between mechs and humans, one could say, is that humans are soft volumes and mechs are hard surfaces. But , not only is that not necessary the case (you can draw a mech soft and circular), but it is more about filling in with symbols, shortcuts that bring to mind the idea of the mechanical.
I am not an engineer. Most artists that do mechas and robots and vehicles and hard surface are not engineer and/or do not have that knowledge. (some do but my point is it's not required). Which means that, as an artist you have to fake it by learning those symbols, that bring the IDEA of a mechanical form. This is about using the brain of the spectator/viewer, their knowledge of what mecha looks like, so that you can meet halfway.
You learn those forms by studying. There is no shortcut here. You have to practice, not only your hand, but also your eye, in looking at your favorite piece of mecha media, and replicate them until you can pull them from your brain without reference. (always use refs tho, you don't have use 100% of your brain all the time.)
I am a very DETAIL-oriented artist. It's one of the thing people compliment me on and/or hire me for. It's far from being the only approach in mecha (plenty of great artists doing great concept arts of mecha with few details) . The more details, the clearer you'll have to be, and the more time you'll have to spend on the art. Especially lineart for me. BUT details help a lot convey those symbols and forms and shapes that immediately call MECHA in the brain of the viewer.
Another thing about mecha, is that since it is NOT organic, there is 1) lots of repetition of shapes and symbols, which you are 100% allowed to copy-paste (i do that all the time) , that makes you gain a lot of time.
and 2) SYMMETRY (it's not always the case, you can have an asymmetric design which can be far more interesting) because it's a robot or a mecha or whatever, designed therefore by human hand in-context. Symmetry makes it harder for me, personally, drawing a 3/4 angles or in perspective etc, symmetry is tough. Symmetry of shapes from one shoulder to another, symmetry of details etc. That's probably one of the harder part when you work in 2D. Cause you have to understand perspective and foreshortening and all that.
But yeah, because it's inorganic, hard surface requires a better understanding of perspective, because straight lines are easier to read therefore the viewer will have an easier time at clocking wonky mistakes.
I could go on, about design and function, and aesthetic. but i'll stop there. This is basically how i started plus some other stuff. The rest you'll pick up along the way.
Thank you for asking ! =w=b

Too many artists who do commissions, in my experience, don't take their job seriously enough.
It's a meme how some artists take months to complete a comm and "haha im so grateful for having patient commissioners" but that's just poor work ethics on the artist's part.
When you offer commissions, you don't just offer art, you also have to communicate with your client properly, give them proper updates, ask them for feedback during process, discuss things that your ToS doesn't cover if needed, and so on.
Just for example, if you're taking longer than expected, let them know why (just vague "due to personal problems" is enough) and if needed, offer a refund or another alternative instead of making your commissioner reach out to you for updates themselves and possibly stressing them out.
Otherwise, you're treating your commissioner like a nuisance that you're forced to work with, not a client who offers you money in return for proper service.

hi!!! i had a question about commissions! i know on your thing is says you only do single character comms, if i were to request two separate comms (ex: two simple half bodies) would you be able to put them on the same canvas? or are the comms limited to a single one per person? thank you so much!!! have a fantastic day and im so incredibly in love with your art!
Thank you so much! 💖
Also a hearty thank you for the much needed kick in the butt because I’ve been flip-flopping whether to add an option for multiple characters or not.
A short while ago I started working on an example I was nearly sure I’d add but I put it on the back burner. So thanks for reminding me lol here’s a really rough WIP of what this option entails:
Tumblr media
I added an upgrade for the refined portraits ( C) at the price of 95 € (up to two additional characters).
But I didn’t even think of the simple half-body version (B) - I added a simple upgrade option for additional characters at the price of 50 €.
I hope you have a fantastic day as well!
EDIT: I regrouped my commission setup and refined portraits ( C) will remain for single characters but I’ve added refined pairing (D) at the price of 160 € with an optional third character (additional 65€). A new info graphic will be up soon(ish).

Since my backlog is almost completed, I am taking experimental slots for noncommercial-use lineart commissions, as in I line your sketch if you don’t/can’t line it yourself! For the time being, it’ll just be my standard black lineart with some black shading included in the linework. As such, it’s not ideal for sketches that demand delicate thin lineart. I CAN make the linework thicker and have sharper edges if that's your art style, though. Keep in mind the shading does obscure some details on things like clothes.
IM me if interested, I'm only taking 2 for now! One image per person.
These don’t include me finishing a sketch or coloring them, I only line your sketch and send it back to you as a transparent ~300dpi bitmap PNG or PSD depending on your preferences (I will default to a PNG if you do not specify). Here are some approximate examples of what will and won’t fly— sketches that are too small or low res are also not going to work as I would be resizing them to a suitable size for my work. Remember, I can’t see into your head for the finished version of a drawing you’re imagining, only what you send me.
My usual rules for comms apply. Paypal payment via invoice first before starting. SFW only, no hate speech or poor taste content, no real people, certain series I won’t draw for, nothing political (even if I agree), and other standard rules. I will also not finish commissions started by someone else to avoid stepping on toes. Full rules are on my Ko-Fi (same username as here).
I will write a small credit for myself on the image for lining the piece, so if you finish and post the completed piece, you cannot crop that out or you must credit me in text.
Pricing:
Operates on a basis specific to each sketch, but here’s the approximate pricing, these are by no means set base prices.
Comic pages are exempt from the estimated base pricing due to how much they can vary. Text is not included.
Small character by themselves (I usually count these as props-- so small animals, summons, pets, and items) 10 USD
Solo character: 25 USD (A simple bust would be about 15)
Two characters: 35 USD (a larger group will be estimated per-context)
Complex character designs (such as detailed armor, detailed tattoos that would be inked, fancy jewelry, body horror): +10 - 25 USD
