I love Steph's origin as told in the Secret Origins 80 page giant- I just overall think it strengthens her character by giving her a lot of pathos and adding to her heroism (which isn't something writers were focused on in her actual intro in detective comics #647 since she was just meant to act as a plot device back then) BUT there is one tiny detail in it i will begrudge, and that is the portrayal of her having a minor love at first sight moment for tim

Mostly because Stephanie showed no interest in her introduction and only showed romantic feelings towards Tim AFTER this moment here:

The adventure in 'tec where they first meet -> Tim investigating the same crime scene as Steph -> she beats him up not knowing it's him at first, apologizes but says he shouldn't have scared her -> he remembers her/the moniker she goes by -> they talk about plot for a few pages -> Stephanie starts flirting

Which...is so fascinating to me and says so much about Stephanie. She highlights the fact that Tim "remembered" her. Like. Steph. Girl. This is our bar? It's sweet but kind of speaks to how much Stephanie is ignored at home/how little and sporadically she's shown interacting with her peers (and rarely ever the same kids twice). Her idea of peak romance is just...being on someone's mind even when you're not there.

Kind of also adds layers to Steph's proclivity towards jealousy later on, a manifestation of her insecurity and loneliness (though don't get it twisted, she's not written this way bc Dixon and co think it's an interesting character flaw, they wrote it bc they think it's an inherent character flaw of (particularly young) women/girls, which is very apparent in how he approaches Ariana's character as well from what I've read)

Also the fact that Steph becomes so smitten for Tim almost immediately after this is (a few issues later she aggressively flirts with him during AN ACTIVE HOSTAGE SITUATION. WHERE SHE'S THE HOSTAGE) again is kind of a mixture of kind of funny and sad. One boy is nice to her once and she's fully ready to wife him. Girl you are deranged (affectionate) (concerned)

FUCK THIS! and immediately moves 2 get him out of the way #except SHE ends up attracting the attention of the villain instead who originally tortured the brother but now he is obsessed w/ her #except not in a torturing way. its... its an interesting way. im fascinated by his portrayal and kind of obsessed w/ him tbh #however it completely gets rid of everything gay like the og mc gets with a girl and they have a kid and the og love interest #is in love with the f!mc. and like yeah bisexuality exists but its NOT portrayed that way at all and so thats. yeah #theres a time skip and the villain ML is going to come back changed as soon as the next season drops and we'll see if i still like him #bc if he swaps to the domineering yandere type instead of his prev type then no thank u #i wouldn't recommend it personally LMAO its trash

i watched that one scene in novitiate for the first time a few days ago and I’m pretty sure that my brain chemistry has been altered for good.

#like-#mmmm #i don’t even have the words #i have so many thoughts #1) is that that was such a great performance by the both of them #it was legitimately one of the best sapphic scenes I’ve ever seen #such a good portrayal of just raw need #2) that scene was so imodna coded #particularly Cathleen was very Imogen temult coded im obsessed #3) the fact that this only happened in the last thirty minutes of the movie is criminal #really good build up till it got to the point where it’s like damn that girl has been through so much suffering and punishment #like no kidding she’s this desperate for love #but also it’s the 60’s and she’s a nun so of course it took so much to finally push her to the limit until she could ask for what she wanted #begged for it really #in a way I feel like it does pay off but if it had happened a bit earlier it would’ve been nice #novitiate

#gotta say #as somebody who’s been a norse-flavored polytheist/animist for a while #the writers for the new gow game really did their research #it’s clear they took a scholarly interest in the archaeology + source material and portrayed it with love and respect #how is it that a game about most of the gods being villains is more accurate and respectful (imo) than media where the gods are the heroes #instead of projecting the story they wanted to tell onto the gods #they took a new interpretation of the lore and extrapolated from there #it truly is fantastic and I am so deeply impressed and touched and surprised!#anyway i am in love with it and i am so glad it is a thing #ALSO great and sensitive portrayal of abuse and trauma and the aftereffects of each and the systems that encourage it #im so glad i waited til after my finals to watch a playthrough because uhhh #i am *obsessing*#they went all in! even the way that odin’s character design implies he’s not originally from the norse pantheon #there’s so much to say about this and i could go on for an HOUR #no joke #these games are so close to my heart for so many reasons #and they continue to worm their way in further #(also regarding the second tag: when i say norse polytheist for a while i mean like a decade #i don’t know everything there is to know #but i know a good fair amount and i am so grateful that the santa monica team did such a beautiful job here)
