And Cas cleared his throat and said, "Anyway it's just a weird joke. They decided the Ship of Theseus will always be the Ship of Theseus."

And Dean finally breathed and said "AH…cool."

Thinking about the year between season 7 and 8, and the line “I fixed up the impala and just drove.” (Then he hit a dog but I’m not talking about that.)

The impala has been through a crap ton, and she was sitting in a storage locker for most of the year, then they send her through a sign and she definitely has damage on her undercarriage from how she landed. It’s not going to be an easy fix, and getting parts is probably going to be difficult actually scratch that, Bobby’s house may have burned down, but the salvage yard is still there and was left to the boys 100% so maybe not so difficult. But Sam would still have to get the car to Bobby’s old place, maybe he even stayed with Jody for a little bit, while working on the car.

Sam isn’t the most experienced with taking care of Baby. That’s Dean’s job, sure he showed Sam how to do touch ups and tune ups, but most of it, Sam wouldn’t know how to do, but there was no way he was going to let anyone else work on his brother’s baby. That’s not a choice, so he spent a couple months, maybe more, pulling pieces out, putting them back in, trying to match parts from other vehicles and finding ones that worked because it was all he had left of Dean, and it needed to be perfect.

Finally, after like 5-6 months, it’s done, she runs and drives, and she sounds as close as Sam remembered to what she was after Dean would modify, or fix something. (It really wasn’t all that close, but she runs and drives,) then, he spends another month driving around, he drives to Vegas for their annual Vegas week, checking every towns first motel in the yellow pages, just in case, along the way. He doesn’t stay in Vegas long, just long enough to play a round of Dean’s favorite game.

Finally, he ends up in Texas, and somehow, thinking about everyone he’s lost, he hits a dog. Up until this point, he’s been checking motels to see if anyone had checked in under the name Jim Rockford. This time, he checked in under the name. Dean could find him.

Sam did what he could. He even took on a few cases before Vegas, but it felt wrong without his brother by his side. (Of course it did, it always did.)

The dog didn’t do much damage to Baby, and the little it did, Sam had fixed within a week. (He’s grown to know Baby quite well, and understands what every noise she makes means. (Sometimes she whines as he starts her, and he just sighs and says, “I miss him too.”))now we’re at month 8, he’s been staying at this motel for a few weeks, working on maintaining the building so it’s safe, and that’s when he runs into Amelia once more after the dog barges in to her room. And they end up talking about loss and loneliness. And Sam feels seen for the first time since Dean died, (he’s still not sure he believes Dean is dead, but also he exploded right in front of him. It’s the easiest way to rationalize everything and stop him from starting another apocalypse to bring his brother back. Because believe me he considered it.) and he feels accepted and she doesn’t push about his past.

They buy a house 9 months after Dean’s death. Sam just wants to call his brother and tell him, but he wouldn’t get the message.

He meets her Dad month 10, and life is moving on. He has a job, and maybe he could have the normal life he always wanted. The one Dean wanted too. Maybe he could go back to college, and he starts looking into things.

Month 11 is when Amelia’s husband is back from the dead, he wasn’t ever actually dead, but it doesn’t matter to Sam. He’s been in her position before. A loved one coming back from the assumed grave is a big deal, not as big as a loved in coming back from an actual grave that you put them in yourself, but it’s enough.

Everything comes crashing back to reality. He starts looking for Dean again, but more so just looking for signs of him from his home with Amelia. Amelia who now has to decide between her husband, and the broken man she grew to love.

Then, a full year has gone by since Dean’s death. Three hundred sixty-six days (it was a leap year) without his older brother. Not really knowing what happened, not really sure he wants to find out, so he doesn’t ask questions, he doesn’t push, he doesn’t even ask about Kevin and tries not to think about him, even though he has nightmares about Kevin being stuck with Crowley, he can’t handle even the idea of anymore pain.

But then, he gets a call from Dean.

There’s not a doubt in his mind that it’s his brother, though maybe he should, and he leaves in the middle of the night. Yes he loved Amelia, but Dean is his brother, and nothing is more important than his brother. He leaves without a second thought, if his brother was alive, life wasn’t so topsy-turvy.

Dean wasn’t supposed to be the one that died first. He gave his life for Sam. Sam should have died in that abandoned town all those years ago, but Dean traded places. (Sam should probably consider the fact that Dean was supposed to die instead of their dad all those years ago, but he doesn’t. Dean wasn’t dead then, he was just mostly dead.)

Sam would be the one that died for real first. He had to be.

His relief upon seeing his brother’s face for the first time in a year could have collapsed him on the spot, he was truly alive, then guilt came crashing over him.

start of season 12 is wild. Mary meeting Cas, trying to shoot him, watching her son hug him and mentally go “oh my god that boy is a homosexual”. Mary doing *that* look at the backseat of the imapala - Dean catching it and looking to Cas like “shit”??? Cas being all badass and then getting his shit rocked by a British lady the next episode. oh. and Dean calling Cas for mom advice and Cas just going “babe we’ve got bigger problems, just be normal.” anywho! season 12 domination sorry not sorry

A tale of two wrecked Impalas . . . .

2x01 vs 7x01

So, I want to talk about two superficially similar scenes that are actually very different in terms of what they say about Sam and Dean's relative agency and autonomy.

Let's start with how they are, on the surface, similar. Both scenes occur during season openers in which the Impala had been heavily damaged to the point of being almost beyond repair in the season finale of the proceeding season. In parallel with the Impala in both cases, one of the brothers has suffered some kind of life threatening situation. Both scenes feature a conversation between one of the boys and Bobby about the state of the car. In both cases, the state of the car is explicitly being used as a means of talking about the state of the other brother and a desire for them to recover.

The scene in 2x01 is particularly interesting to me because it is one of the only times in which the Impala acts as a mirror/stand in for Dean. As is pretty well discussed on Samblr at this point, often throughout the series, the Impala serves as a mirror to Sam and to his place within The Roles (x, x).

"Looks like Dean's taken care of this old beast. Seems like he's taken good care of you too." As Lucifer (as John) says, calling back to John's S1 line "I wouldn't have given you the damn thing if I thought you were going to ruin it."

These lines reflect the idea of the Impala, and by implication, Sam being passed down from John to Dean as a possession. The possession aspect is amplified in these lines in particular to me because of the notable lack of female pronouns used in reference to it "the damn thing" "ruin it" "the old beast", all of these serve to strip Sam of his personhood, dehumanising him.

Dean's place in the position of power within his and Sam's relationship is reflected here.

Whilst the scene in 7x07 does use female pronouns (and that they are female pronouns is important) for the Impala, it still tacity treats Sam as an extension of the Impala (an extension of Dean) - "we'll glue him back together too" - both the Impala and Sam are objects, with the illusion of personhood, but who ultimately belong to Dean. The scene demonstrates Dean's sense of entitlement and ownership over Sam's agency, his body, his autonomy. "No matter what shape he's in. . ." It doesn't matter what is done to Sam as long as "Sammy" is preserved in some form.

By contrast, the scene in 2x01 begins with "[Dean] is gonna wanna fix this" - immediately, this embodies the agency with Dean, if the Impala in this scene is acting as a mirror to Dean then it is saying that the ultimate agency over his own body here belongs to Dean.

"If there's only one working part, that's enough" whilst, again, similar sounding to "No matter what shape he's in", I think does have fundamental underlying differences in intension and tone.

Sam's line, especially in combination with the first line, suggests that he will look for a working piece, and if he can find it they can help to rebuild the Impala (Dean) around it, and ultimately, Dean will be the one to conduct the final repair. Despite the comparison to the object of the Imapala, I find Sam's approach here to be humanising of Dean. "Working" is I think, especially relevant here when drawing a comparison to 7x01.

Dean's line doesn't care whether the parts of Sam they "glue back together" are "working" or not, and there is certainly no indication here that Sam would be involved in the process. Dean will shove parts of Sam back together whether he likes it or not. The 2x01 scene also reflects the relative balance of power in their relationship, Sam as neither the intention, or the power to claim ownership of the Impala and by proxy Dean, the way Dean does over the Impala and Sam in 7x01.

Ultimately, whilst these scenes may appear similar, they are profoundly affected by the relative positions of power Sam and Dean inhabit within the bounds of The Roles, and the effect this has on their relative agencies.

I imagine that's how it is when Sam and Dean fight with Sister Winchester in the imapala, it's such a childish argument like she's like "I'd rather jump out of the car than keep listening to that horrible song" and Dean is like "Do it, no one's forcing you to be here." and then she's jumping out of the car. What would the boys' reactions be? HAHA

I haven’t seen the movie, but that concept is hilarious

-Dean would slam on his brakes so fast and Sam would be out of the car before it was stopped.

-I think Sam would be too shocked to say anything, he’d just kinda stare at her, but Dean would start yelling immediately. There’s a lot of “are you crazy?!” And “what were you thinking?!”

-Dean would drag her back to the car and make Sam sit in the back with her.

“Im not gonna hold his hand, Dean!”

“Oh you’re doing it, and you’ll do it the whole ride back home you psycho.”

-Dean would probably replay that song half a dozen times just out of spite. 

-after some silence (besides Dean’s music), Sam finally speaks up—

“That was really dumb, kid. You scared me so bad, don’t ever do that again.”

-and his quiet reproach is worse than all of Dean’s yelling, because she knows Sam is disappointed. So she stops grumbling and lets Sam hold her hand the whole ride home and let’s Dean play whatever he wants.

post canon sam hcs

i have a post full of post-series sam headcanons + another post with a fav headcanon of mine which is that after miracle, i think sam would have his own pet while also fostering other animals. in other news i'm not a particularly hard sam broke the cycle truther 😬 sorry. if jack, heaven, much of sam's montage, and dj's tattoo mean anything to me it's that the cage is neverending and supernatural thinks this is a good thing. it's important to note that this makes my dick hard, especially because sam does try within the cage. anyway

i think he left the bunker pretty soon after dean died. he left on a hunt to help someone else out but just never went back; it goes hand in hand with so much of sam's reality being he and dean and the dynamics of their relationship by season ten onward that when dean, who made up so much of what he'd consider home, died the wallpaper rolled backwards at the edges and much of his fondness for the place melted into what he'd previously felt. like, this is where we work— and if he has any chance of getting away from hunting it starts with leaving the bunker and it isn't a particularly hard decision to make. he tells dj about it but they never go and he leaves the key in dj's possession after death

particularly obsessed w the idea of sam as a helicopter parent while also never really letting dj get to know him as a person. he tells dj things about himself, he ensures dj has all the information, but it's in that sam-typical emotionally compartmentalised sense. dj knows his dad reads a lot, they're always talking about different stuff, but he doesn't actually know anything about his dad. kind of how the fact that the audience doesn't know a ton about sam's music taste, or how he slowly phases out of having a personal style are examples of the general deprioritising of that kind of character building for sam unless its strictly narratively necessary and it presents itself within sam's watsonian characteristically typical tendency to compartmentalise his emotion and therefore his likes and dislikes as he assimilates more and more into dean's idea of their relationship, it'd also present like that to dj in a way that he wouldn't notice until dj was older and their relationship became adult parent and adult child

dj plays a few instruments! he never particularly committed to the sports he played but he still kept up with football (soccer) till highschool. he was more of an instruments guy—he plays the piano (and keyboard), drums and the guitar—and it amazes sam that out of everything he knows and has come across, he doesn't know how to read music. it's comforting to him that something wasn't touched with his enjoyment of having Knowledge being weaponised with hunting. dj joined a band in his senior year and sam had to temporarily relocate the imapala so they could practice in the garage :)

what first started as a simple quirk that just sucked anything in its path eventually evolved to be a freedom-enabling quirk by the simple manifestation of wanting to be rich and live alone.

she often employs her abilities to create traps and evade capture. the quirk comes in very handy for both offense and defense. her first and most used ability is dimensional black hole creation.

she has the power to create "wormholes" or black holes in space. these wormholes function as portals to other dimensions or in the area around her, allowing her to teleport herself and objects through them. she can create these wormholes on any surface, including walls, floors, or even in mid-air.

these black circles also allow her teleportation across the multiverse. using them, she can instantly travel from one place to another, effectively teleporting herself over short or long distances. while thirteen can only use portals to suck things up, she can move rapidly and have more versatility over her ability, making it very difficult for her opponents to track or anticipate her movements.

she also possesses an ability called spot duplication, which allows her to generate multiple wormholes simultaneously, creating duplicates of her wormholes. these duplicates can be used strategically in combat, confusing and overwhelming her enemies. so, with her quirk, she can practically fight multiple opponents at once as she effectively moves through each one quickly.

she also has enhanced spatial awareness that allows her to accurately judge the location and distance between spots. this skill enables her to navigate through her spots swiftly and with precision, making her attacks unpredictable for her opponents. so, her matchup against midoriya is perfect for a theatrical event because even though he has danger sense, it’ll delay due to how quick and unpredictable she is while using it.

as an advantage, she also boasts great martial arts proficiency. the anti-villain trained in hand-to-hand combat and martial arts and learned to use her spots strategically in conbat. It makes her a capable fighter in close combat and long-range battles as well.

throughout her own scientific research in understanding her quirk and what she can withstand with it, she is completely fine with being in space without any gear.

✦ drawbacks:

with a quirk as OP as that, obviously there’d be a hefty side order of drawbacks. but luckily she’s been training with her quirk to be able to carry on using her quirk, even if her drawbacks make her a little delayed while they’re in action.

she can get motion sickness form how quickly she travels through her black holes, or tremors if she keeps pushing herself which mainly happen when she starts overusing her quirkk while the drawback is active.

since black holes are anomalies, in here and my DR too, she also has to consistently keep research to fully comprehend her limits and abilities !!

the black hole quirk does also cause changes to personality when she gets older. mainly being self-sufficient, having to be perceived as an anomaly by many people, aloof, and being mysterious. no matter how much she tries to explain something, it always seems vague and mysterious.
