Somehow still continually trippy to remember that the United States isn't just a fascist country in a "truly none of us are free under capitalism" type of way (just like us fr) or a "the horrors inflicted upon the world by western imperialism are unending" type of way (just like us fr), but ALSO in a "their incarceration rate is higher than North Korea's" type of way (I knew it was bad, but wtf lol).
#wikipedia leaves off nk's incarceration rate#but the U.S. State Department human rights report for 2016 puts the prison population between 80000 and 120000#and google says the total population would have been 25.39 million in 2016#which like#if I didn't fuck up the math#that's fewer per 100000 than in the united states

no particular interest in the argument itself but an uproar - including from people who really do want to reduce incarceration in the US - over biden shortening the sentences of 1500 people already on home release, because one of them did something we actually disapprove of, is... illustrative.
#among 1500 non-violent offenders on home release you are going to find a few who make you angry#but if you want to significantly lower rates of incarceration you are going to have to let people out based on categories they fall into#rather than whether the people with discretion are feeling merciful about each particular case#anyway. perhaps after 15 years in the benevolent and character-building institution of the us prison service this guy is reformed &penitent#and if not i'm unconvinced that another two years would have improved things

When it comes to all the ways in which society needs to change and be dismantled and reformed and transformed and rehabilitated and made over, I almost never want to hear from a white person I just feel like they have a fundamental disconnect from some of the life experiences needed to fully understand what needs to change
#txt#there are very few conversations where I think white voices add anything to the pot#and this is not one of them#I don’t want to hear about how you think a perfect society works because even those of you with the best intentions often unthinkingly#overlook black and brown people#like I wanna hear from indigenous and black people more than anyone i dont think white people who have contributed most to the clusterfuck#it is now get to tell us how it could be made better#and usually all I hear from white people is ideals without any real roadmap for how to get there in the first place#like on that last post so many people ask that question honestly and in good faith and all you have is ‘lol where else’? be so fr rn#so many people don’t bother to answer these questions and don’t see how that might be unsettling?#change is always scary! and you’re proposing an idea that so many of them haven’t considered! you can’t imagine that *any* of them might be#a little confused or lost? I can’t fuckin stand you honestly#I just think people who have been treated the worst by this system and who often have experiences based on race *paired* with gender and#sexuality and disability and everything else have the best place to see where things can improve#and I don’t care to hear from white people who don’t understand that sort of treatment#do you understand what the prison system was always made to do? *who* it was created to incarcerate and who it *does* at a greater rate than#anyone else? if you do than you understand why I don’t give a flying fuck what white abolitionists have to say#rant tag

The only thing really challenging my morals, ethics and political views isn’t anyone else’s opinion but my own uncontrollable rage :) /hj
#it’s like#yeah morals but I’m really angry about this shit#and sometimes that goes hand in hand but sometimes it doesn’t#do I believe in prison reform and that the incarceration rate is insane? yes#but also some shit bags really need to be beaten to death in my opinio

nice. of course the k-12 education system is underfunded, leading to constant teacher shortages, inadequate facilities, and subpar student outcomes. healthcare access is alarmingly poor, with an unneeded high uninsured rate that leaves many without normal, essential medical services, and even with recent medicaid expansion, mad issues still remain. health outcomes are fckn dismal, with high rates of chronic diseases and preventable deaths. obesity levels are among the worst in the nation (no wonder with all the food insecurity and lack of healthy lifestyle options around there). income inequality is out of control. they got many of their citizens living in poverty with almost zero prospects for improvement. on top of these issues, oklahoma has one of the highest incarceration rates in the country, driven by harsh sentencing laws and systemic failings which targets black and poor (because of course (because america)). all on top of a legacy of racial injustices. i mean the tulsa race massacre. need i say more? but yea they should totally spend 1bil on entertainment. that's a totally reasonable thing to do smfh.

I can't believe I walked into my first (ish) day of work at a new part time job today and basically said "why are you all so white" 💀💀💀
#i'm working in a forensic hospital#and the first thing they did was bring me to rounds#which was a meeting with like all of the psychiatrists and nurses and stuff#and literally everyone there was white (or perhaps white passing- i dont know everyone's ethnicity)#and afterwards my boss asked me if i had any questions or thoughts#and the first thing i said was that everyone in that meeting was white#WHY DID I DO THAT???#I mean. I was trying to call attention to the fact that maybe they should be employing more diversely#especially given the fact that they're treating a highly racialized population#(black and indigenous peoples are incarcerated at higher rates in canada)#But. it really wasn't my place to say really.#i'm just there as a research assistant to help them build their database#my opinions on the people they hire really have NO weight#though. it was bugging me in particular that one of the nurses was talking about a patient being agitated#and calling another person names#and the nurse was like 'and he called him everything other than a white man!'#and i'm just there like 'okay why does that matter? 😭'#i didnt bring that up though. not good to complain about your new fucking coworkers#i also dont think i explained my reasoning for mentioning that we had a really white group very well#i started fumbling when i acknowledged that there could have just been white passing people there#and then he asked me to explain what that term meant 💀💀💀

It didn’t hit me until recently that people genuinely think Kamala Harris was a police officer because of all the people who call her a cop online.
Like I think maybe it’s important people should know she was a prosecutor. She was once a district attorney and later an attorney general for the state of California. And we can discuss how related that is to police work and how tied she is to the carceral system etc etc (but for fairness would have to include her record of pushing for lowering incarceration rates through programs helping former prisoners + her office refusing to jail folks for low level weed offense). But she was never a police officer. Like people should get that clear. Kamala Harris was never a police officer. She was a district attorney. She was never a police officer.
#Kamala Harris#us politics#like genuinely seeing people say she was an actual cop#that was never true#and it’s kind of embarrassing#like please her wiki page is right there

Is the Traditional Cisgender Black Family at Risk? Black Women Are Evolving, and So Are Their Expectations
Black women are soaring—outpacing every demographic in higher education and leading in entrepreneurship, leadership, and social impact. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, Black women earn 64.1% of bachelor’s degrees, 71.5% of master’s degrees, and 65.9% of all doctoral-level degrees awarded to Black students. This success is a point of pride for the Black community, but it…
